REVIEW: Happy Together Tour at Palace Theatre

Amy Modesti

Musicians from the Happy Together Tour 2023 on stage at the show's finale at the Palace Theatre in Albany, NY, Tuesday, August 1,2023.

ALBANY – For 14 years, the Happy Together tour has brought people together to reminisce on the good ol’ days when life was easy and music was played at high school sock hops. Baby boomers, born before the 1960 grew up listening to songs that became Top 40 Billboard hits. Songs, like the title of this concert tour and “Sugar Sugar,” remain hip and loved to this day by boomers and younger generations who have discovered the songs on the radio, though pop culture or their parents.

Since 1989 the musical preferences centered around 90’s pop icons N*SYNC, Backstreet Boys, Brittney Spears and 98 Degrees. At the time, these teen idols became sensations and I grew to love them.

At the Palace Theatre, The Cowsills, The Classics IV, The Vogues, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Little Anthony, and The Turtles with Ron Dante, front man of The Archies, all performed. Each were acts which my parents grew up listening to.

The voices during the Tuesday, Aug. 1 show were still at their prime as if one heard them 50 years ago on an album for the first time. Their stage presence and musical command was impressive, admirable, and entertaining.

The songs played during the show remain relevant now. “Tears On My Pillow” from Little Anthony was covered by Sha-Na-Na and heard in the film “Grease”, “Sugar Sugar” by The Archies was used as the theme song for the TV show Cake Boss, and “The Rain, The Park, & Other Things” of The Cowsills was included in the “Dumb and Dumber” movie soundtrack.

Life often imitates art, not only out of flattery, but also in the form of music. Musicians sometimes cover songs that turn into the pinnacle hit of their career. For example, Linda Rondstadt covered Little Anthony’s “Hurt So Bad” and the Atlanta Rhythm Section did  a rendition of the Classics IV “Spooky” and are remembered for the covers more than the originals.

Having heard these acts perform live for the first time, it was difficult for me to pinpoint the top moments of the tour. Maybe it was watching 83-year-old Little Anthony sing and dance to “Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop”, hearing “The Vogues sing the gorgeous “You Are My Special Angel” in perfect harmony, or dancing to “Sugar Sugar” with my mom who grew up reading “The Archies” comics and watched the TV show.

Perhaps it was hearing my Mom’s response to certain songs that made her get emotional, feel goosebumps, and dance made the overall experience priceless.

A week prior to the Happy Together Tour, I had a phone conversation with Paul Cowsill, the lead singer of The Cowsills Band. Paul, his brother Bill, and sister Susan, were one of six acts to perform and were the opening act of the tour.

The Cowsills Band, who were the inspiration for the Partridge Family TV show, came out with top hits as “The Rain, The Park And Other Things”, “We Can Fly”, “Indian Lake”, “Love American Style”, and “Hair”.

Paul reflected upon his return visit to Albany and the experience he had on the Palace Theatre stage in an email on Thursday, Aug. 3.

“What a night we had at the Palace Theatre. We sang our hits and the audience seem(ed) to love hearing the songs from their past. It was great getting back to Albany, where we hadn’t been back to since the 90s,” he wrote.

According to Paul, who has participated for the past nine tours, said every artist on the tour loved going out on the tour.

“The tour is crazy good. Our demographic, our audiences never had MTV and they never had VH1..They went to concerts and they’re still going to concerts, so as long as they’re going, we’re going and we’re really in it together.” Cowsill said.

Paul added that he, along with his siblings Bill and Susan are touring more than they did when they were children, booking 61 shows total for 2023. The band will continue to do one-night shows for the Happy Together Tour through Sept. 1 and will extend into next year.

“These people are excited that we’re coming to their town and they get there and everybody’s doing a great job.” he said. “And so the people feel like they’re back in their teens.”

Even millennials, Gen-Z, and Gen Alpha (the younger generation) fans who grew up listening to the oldies alongside their parents are also attending the Happy Together Tour.

“We are getting a lot of younger people at these shows and we always go, oh, were you wrangled into coming? And the kids go, no, I was raised on this music.” Cowsill said. “So all of us as parents, we’re continuing to play The Beatles…having those kids get exposed to the music that we grew up with and they love it. They just love it.”

Paul, Bob, and Susan Cowsill continue to reach out to their audience through music tours, shows with their family band, as well as their podcast. “People are hip to everything,” Paul Cowsill said.

In fact, the Cowsills podcast has 107 shows that feature a famous musician from the classic rock world to relive their heydays and released their new album, Rhythm of The World, last year and the vinyl album edition was released this year on Record Store Day.

Once the band finishes the Happy Together tour during the first week of September, the three Cowsills will continue touring, but adding more family members. The three are planning to take part in the Flower Power Cruise in March 2024 to celebrate the music of the 1960’s and a 1970’s. They are also in the studio recording new music.

Paul Cowsill encourages fans and individuals who have not seen the Happy Together Tour or the bands themselves to attend the show while it’s happening.

“People are just loving this show and they’re telling everybody who hasn’t gone to the show to go to the show.” Paul said. “You better see it before you’re dead, because this is the show to see. They (the promoters) keep booking it so we’ll see how long she goes.”

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

A happy crowd fills the BergenPAC auditorium in Englewood, NJ this Wednesday, June 7, 2023 evening ready to experience the music of the 1960s with the 2023 edition of the Happy Together Tour featuring The Turtles, Little Anthony, Gary Puckett, The Vogues, The Classics IV, and The Cowsills.

Before the show begins, we chat backstage with The Classics IV vocalist Tom Garrett who talks about this latest edition of the HTT stating, “This year is an amazing tour! Little Anthony is the newest artist to join us and he’s a great addition, knocking them dead every night.” Joking, “Tonight’s show is our sixth, and we only have 53 to go,” Garrett explains, “It’s so much fun for the artists, and the audiences sing along on every song — there are no ‘B’ sides; only ‘A’ sides.” Acknowledging, “In addition to being a part of the HTT, I’m also happy to announce that The Classics IV just released a new song called ‘Your Turn,’” Garrett notes, “It has that ‘Classics IV’ flavor, and it just debuted on Sirius radio” prior to adding, “I hope everyone will get a chance to listen to it on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and other music services.”

Inside the beautifully renovated BergenPAC auditorium, the lights dim and the crowd cheers as the Happy Together Band — Greg Smith on bass, Chris Camilleri on drums, Manny Focarazzo on keyboards, and musical director Godfrey Townsend on guitar — take the stage for tonight’s performance.

The pre-recorded voice of DJ Shadow Stevens introduces “the real life inspiration for  The Partridge Family —  The Cowsills,” and Bob, Paul, and Susan Cowsill enter the stage. Bob greets the cheering crowd, announcing, “You guys are great! Thank you for coming out tonight. Happy Together ’23 is in full motion!”

The Cowsills open the show with a bouncy rendition of their catchy ’67 hit, “The Rain, The Park, and Other Things” (aka “The Flower Girl”).

The happy strains of this joyful ’60s tune fill the air as audience members move to the groove at their seats.

Paul exclaims, “This next song goes out to everybody in the balcony!” as the trio launches into their 1967 hit, “We Can Fly.” Music lovers clap along to the rhythm and listen to the tight vocal harmonies of the trio as a kaleidoscope of colors flash on the screen behind them.

Bob introduces his siblings, Paul and Susan, before The Cowsills perform a lively version of “Indian Lake,” a song which made Susan Cowsill, at the age of nine, the youngest person to perform on a hit record when the tune reached the Top 10 in 1968.

The trio follows up with a TV theme song they recorded back in 1969 — the theme from  Love, American Style.

Concertgoers cheer, and Paul thanks the crowd as a fan calls out “Hair!” and Bob replies, “Of course, we’re going to do that!” The Cowsills end their nostalgic set with a high-energy rendition of their 1969 smash.

At the conclusion of “Hair,” audience members stand and cheer as The Cowsills take a well-deserved bow.

The Classics IV — featuring vocalist Tom Garrett and saxophonist Paul Weddle — take the stage and begin their set with the 1969 hit, “Every Day with You Girl,” a number which features Garrett’s silky lead vocal and Weddle’s vibrant saxophone playing.

Music lovers cheer, and Garrett greets the crowd saying, “Thank you! There’s nothing better than seeing such smiling faces in the audience.” The group follows up with their Top Ten hit from 1969, “Stormy,” where Weddle plays a tenor sax solo and concertgoers happily join Garrett in singing the well-known “Bring back that sunny day” lyric.

Garrett announces, “In 1969, this song went to #2, and it’s the 32nd most-played song on American radio,” prior to launching into the band’s 1969 hit, “Traces.” After Garrett croons the song’s famous “Faded photographs/Covered now with lines and creases” lyric, Weddle switches from tenor to soprano sax as he accompanies Garrett’s smooth vocal.

Concluding their set with a song which reached #1 in early 1968, The Classics IV perform “Spooky.” The crowd sings along with Garrett on the “Love is kinda crazy with a spooky little girl like you” chorus and Weddle wails a jazzy tenor sax solo, holding out the final note out at the end before Garrett thanks the standing, cheering crowd.

The Vogues — Troy Elich, Royce Taylor, and Shawn Stevens — enter the stage and open their portion of the show with their 1966 hit, “Five O’Clock World.”

Looking dapper in their shimmering jackets, the trio gets the audience clapping along to the beat as the singers’ stylized harmonies create a vocal symphony filled with movement.

Moving on to their 1968 million seller, “My Special Angel,” the audience enjoys the smooth sound that Troy Elich and his colleagues create as they expertly harmonize with one another.

At the conclusion, music lovers cheer, and calls of “More!” can be heard throughout the auditorium. Touched by the response, Erlich exclaims, “I am floored!”

Announcing “This was our first million selling single,” The Vogues perform a dynamic version of their 1968 Top Ten hit, “Turn Around, Look At Me.” As heads sway and toes tap, music lovers can’t help but sing along, finding it impossible to resist the magical melody of this alluring classic.

Following a standing ovation, The Vogues end their set with their upbeat 1965 hit, “You’re the One.”

Their brilliant harmonies and high countermelody impress the audience and concertgoers stand and cheer yet again for these talented vocalists.

During intermission, we chat with several music lovers in the crowd who share their thoughts on tonight’s performance thus far. Comments Bruce from Englewood, “So far, this show is tremendous! All these songs are such big hits — I’d have to say they were the twelve greatest songs I’ve ever heard within an hour — and the performers were spot on!” Anita from Fort Lee agrees, declaring, “They didn’t miss a beat — all of the performers still retain their vigor!”

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

Cheryl from Palisades Park calls Act I “Great!” recalling, “The Vogues’ song, ‘You’re the One,’ was played at my wedding. It made me want to get up and dance!” Whereas Cathy from Pearl Run calls the show thus far, “Excellent,” Cindi from Congers, NY confesses, “It was so good, I cried my heart out! It made me want to go back to the ‘60s!”

Gary Puckett, the original lead singer of Gary Puckett and The Union Gap, takes the stage in his pastel green overcoat and opens Act II with a powerful rendition of his 1968 #2 hit, “Lady Willpower.”

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

Concertgoers sing along on the “Lady Willpower/It’s now or never” refrain as Puckett croons center stage under colored lights.

“How’s everybody tonight?” asks Puckett, announcing, “I’m dedicating my part of the show to the veterans of the military.” Moving on to 1968’s “Over You,” Puckett croons, “Why am I losing sleep over you?” before the audience happily joins him in singing the tuneful “I guess there’s just no getting over you” chorus.

Announcing, ‘This was a kind of a coming of age song for us,” Puckett removes his jacket prior to presenting a compelling version of his 1969 Top Ten smash, “This Girl Is a Woman Now.” Singing with emotion, his vibrato fills the BergenPAC auditorium and the audience avidly responds with cheers and applause.

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

Joking, “Last October, I turned 80 — I think you’re just applauding because I made it this far!” Puckett invites the audience to join him in singing his 1968 hit “Woman Woman,” and the crowd happily sings along on the well-known, “Woman, woman/Have you got cheating on your mind?” refrain.

Announcing, “I’ve got one more for you,” Puckett concludes his set with 1968’s “Young Girl” where the audience joins in singing on the “Young girl/Get out of my mind” chorus under bright white stage lights.

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

As concertgoers applaud on their feet, Puckett responds, “It is because of you that freedom lives in this country, and don’t forget, the glory goes to God,” prior to taking a bow and exiting the stage.

Shadow Stevens’ voice proclaims Little Anthony as “one of the nicest guys in the business” as Anthony Gourdine — aka Little Anthony — enters and receives a standing ovation from the entire crowd.

Opening with his 1958 hit, “Tears on My Pillow,” Anthony’s voice sounds as strong as ever as he croons, “You don’t remember me/But I remember you,” looking dapper in his sparkling black and silver jacket with red lapels.

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

The crowd cheers, and Anthony says, “Welcome to BergenPAC in beautiful downtown Englewood,” joking, “This next song is not one of my favorites; in fact, I think it’s stupid, but it paid for the mortgage.” Launching into his 1960 million-seller, “Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop,” concertgoers sing along as they dance to the music in their seats.

Little Anthony’s background vocalist, Johnny Britt, is featured playing a muted trumpet solo on the introduction to the 1965 classic, “Hurt So Bad.” Singing with power and emotion, Anthony holds his mic as far away from his body as possible as he cries, “Please don’t go/Please don’t go!” bringing music lovers to their feet.

Acknowledging that the crowd’s response gives him “a lot of energy,” Anthony launches into a song written specifically for him — his 1964 smash, “Goin’ Out of My Head.”

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

Singing with skill and feeling, Anthony majestically holds out the notes at the end bringing people to their feet before he blows kisses to the crowd while exiting the stage.

Tonight’s final act, The Turtles — Mark Volman and Ron Dante — start off their set with a rockin’ version of the group’s 1967 hit, “She’d Rather Be With Me.”

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

As they croon the tuneful “Some girls love to run around” lyric, music lovers nod their heads and tap their toes to the number’s snappy rhythm.

Volman and Dante follow up with the 1966 Turtles hit, “You Baby” where the crowd happily joins in on the “You baby/No one but you, baby/Nobody but you” refrain.

Dante asks the audience, “Are you having a good time?” and Volman adds, “We’re happy to be here,” prior to joking, “I’m happy to be anywhere at this point of my life!”

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

Volman invites the audience to sing along on the duo’s next song and concertgoers enthusiastically join in on the “I said a-no, no, no, it ain’t me, babe” refrain of “It Ain’t Me, Babe,” the 1965 Turtles hit written by Bob Dylan.

Dante follows up with a performance of his own #1 hit with The Archies, “Sugar, Sugar.”

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

Next, Volman and Dante segue into a spirited rendition of The Turtles’ 1968 Top Ten smash, “Elenore,” where lights flash over the audience as they sing “Elenore, gee, I think you’re swell” on this happy-go-lucky tune.

Dante cries, “I’ve been waiting to sing this song all night — let’s sing it together!” as the entire crowd stands, dances, and sings “I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you for all my life” along with The Turtles on their 1967 chart-topper, “Happy Together.”

The audience cheers so enthusiastically that Volman jokes he’ll have to start the show all over again. One at a time, each of performers return to the stage to do a snippet of one of their hits, after which everyone joins in on a full cast reprise of “Happy Together.”

As audience members file out of the BergenPAC auditorium, we chat with several music lovers who comment on tonight’s performance. Remarks Nina from Hamburg, NJ, “I came to see The Cowsills, and they were fantastic! Their harmonies really brought me back.” Richard from Tenefly agrees, noting, “The Cowsills were great, but so was Little Anthony. At age 82, his voice was unbelievable, making this concert just awesome!”

The 2023 Happy Together Tour LIVE! at BergenPAC

MacKenzie from Clifton recalls, “My mom grew up in the ’60s so I’ve listened to ’60s music my whole life,” before disclosing, “This is my first concert ever! I knew so many of the songs, and the artists really kept the music flowing.” MacKenzie’s mom, Gaye from Clifton, reveals, “I saw Gary Puckett back in 1990 and got an autograph and picture with him, and here I am tonight 30 years later and he’s still got it!”

Whereas Anthony from Brooklyn characterizes tonight’s show as “Awesome!” declaring, “All of the artists rocked!” Ron from Hamburg exclaims, “My favorite was Little Anthony, but they were all fantastic!” before concluding, “I give this show an A+, and I’ll definitely be back next year!”

The Happy Together Tour – a Review by Ed Conway

Written by staff on august 3, 2023.

The Happy Together Tour – Palace Theater 8-1-23

Although I was just getting to an age to start listening to my own music on the radio, the artists that came to the Palace last night accounted for most of the songs of my youth. The Happy Together Tour has continued to bring surviving members of what many of us of a certain generation remember fondly of our childhoods, and they’ve been doing it for nearly 40 years (the first being 1984).  Sadly, many of the performers from the original line-ups have passed on, but those who are still out and touring sounded a lot like their young selves.  There was a certain childish light in their faces as they recounted their hits, although with six bands on the bill, they were relegated to just 4 or 5 of their biggest ones.

Starting off the night on the Palace Stage were The Cowsills .  The three remaining ones on the tour ran through a quick succession of their songs.  When I was younger, one of my favorite shows on TV was “Love American Style,”  I never realized the theme song was done by The Cowsills, until they performed it, and then ran through another song I didn’t realize they had done, “Hair.”  It was like that throughout the night, songs I’ve known for what seems like my whole life, but just starting to listen to the radio, I didn’t always know the performers.  Next up was The Classics IV .  Although neither of the performers were the originals, they still performed their four song set flawlessly, as they went through “Stormy”, “Traces Of Love” and “Spooky.”  The Vogues came out on fire and went immediately into “Five O’Clock World.”  Their harmonies were spot on, especially on “Turn Around Look At Me.”   While the current line-up has no original members, they still bring back memories.

After an intermission, Gary Puckett stepped out of the wings in his trademark “Civil War” jacket and ran through some of his top songs, including “Woman, Woman” and “Young Girl.”  While at 80 (almost 81) his voice isn’t quite what it used to be, but it didn’t diminish the reverence of the audience as they sang along on every song, even filling in when prompted.  Next, Little Anthony (of Little Anthony & The Imperials fame) stepped out to the further delight of the audience singing “Tears On My Pillow.”  He really got the crowd going with “Shimmy Shimmy Ko-Ko Bop.”  Topping the bill were The Turtles , with original Turtle, Mark Volman (aka Phlorescent Leech, or Flo from the band Flo & Eddie).  It should be noted the reason for the alias was due to contractually being unable to use the name Turtles or his name when he left the band, along with Howard Kaylan (Eddie).  He was able to retrieve The Turtle name and helped create the Happy Together Tour.  Volman was joined on stage by Ron Dante (frontman of the Archies) who threwh in “Sugar Sugar” for good measure.  Being the headliners, they played an extended set before finishing off with “Happy Together,” what else?  Afterwards, they brought up each act, in order, to run through a medley of each of their top hits until the entire stage was filled.

While the performers all did a wonderful job, it wouldn’t have been possible without the Happy Together house band.  Having a stable band allowed artists to come and go without the delay of a set change. They played the songs just as we remembered them and added backing harmonies to fill in for the missing members.  I had as much fun, however, watching the joy in the artists’ faces as they were performing, and telling stories, for an audience of true believers, many of whom gave standing ovations after each set.  All in all, it was an enjoyable evening of nostalgia with the entire night running like clockwork.

Ron Dante joins the line-up to delight with his own mega-hits, “Sugar Sugar” and “Tracy.”

With over 60 years in a show business and over 50 million records sold worldwide, LITTLE ANTHONY joins the tour. His voice has not changed a bit and is considered one of the greatest voices of all time! THE VOGUES, are also known for their harmony-driven soaring pop sound. THE VOGUES had numerous Top 10 hits with singles such as “Five O’Clock World”, “You’re The One,” “My Special Angel” and “Turn Around Look At Me,” among others..

THE CLASSICS IV with their southern soft rock sound, they are one of the most popular and influential pop groups of the 60s and 70s. They achieved phenomenal success with multiplatinum hits “Spooky,” “Stormy,” “Traces,” and “Everyday With You Girl.”

Rounding out the bill are THE COWSILLS, the harmonious singing family (two brothers and a sister) that inspired the smash ‘60s hit television show, THE PATRIDGE FAMILY. They are sure to delight with their best-known songs, “Hair,” “Indian Lake,” “The Rain The Park & Other Things (I Love The Flower Girl)” and more.

Happy Together 2023

Happy Together 2023

An evening of hit after hit after hit that will have you heading home whistling the soundtrack of the 60s and 70s! Featuring The Turtles, Little Anthony (“Tears on My Pillow,” “Goin’ Out of My Head”), Gary Puckett & The Union Gap (“Young Girl”), The Classics IV (“Spooky,” “Stormy”), The Vogues (“Turn Around, Look at Me,” “Five O’Clock World”) and The Cowsills (“Hair,” “The Rain, The Park & Other Things”).

Happy Together features The Turtles, Little Anthony, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Classics IV, The Vogues, and The Cowsills!

THE TURTLES Very few rock performers have remained as vital through the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s as have Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. Initially they made their mark with the Turtles, then they joined Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention, and then they glided into their own Flo & Eddie persona, dishing out records that have encompassed a multitude of personalities. They’ve always been smart enough to have responded to the latest worthwhile trends in a fashion that has yielded an abundance of quality records, and more than their share of hits. This history will attempt to add a depth and perspective to Kaylan’s and Volman’s unique musical journey, one that, perhaps encapsulates the post-Beatles rock era like no other. This text was originally a companion piece to Rhino’s exquisitely packaged, executive version of “The Turtles Greatest Hits” (RNLP 160). Let’s pause just for a second to make the totally subjective case that the Turtles were the closest America ever came to having a Beatles. Others, like the Lovin’ Spoonful, Rascals and Beach Boys, certainly had as many hits, but the Turtles hits were better conceived and arranged and, like the Beatles, transcended so many styles.

The Rascals lacked the heavy guitars that were the sound of the day; the Spoonful were limited in approach, and didn’t last that long anyway; and the Beach Boys were too square for too long, and somehow seemed tied to a pre-Beatles era. Suffice to say that, even the Turtles more minor hits, the ones which failed to make it onto “The Turtles Greatest Hits.”, all sound like first class records. This will provide a necessary primer for understanding Kaylan’s and Volman’s crazy world, so you’ll be better prepared when the duo hit you with their next record, as their “history” continues. Two guys from Westchester. The one with the curly hair and glasses, and the other with the beard. That’s how Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (AKA Flo and Eddie) refer to themselves. Two slightly bewildered kids thrust into the fast lane of rock ‘n’ roll stardom -hits, fame, national tours, hanging out with the Beatles, joining the Mothers of Invention, acting in the “200 Motels” movie, and on and on … Two guys from Westchester.

Little Anthony and the Imperials is a  r hythm and blues/soul/doo-wop vocal group   from  New York ,  first active in the 1950s. Lead  singer   Jerome Anthony “Little Anthony” Gourdine was noted for his high-pitched  falsetto voice ,  influenced by  Jimmy   Scott . The group was inducted into the  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame  on April 4, 2009, 23 years after the group’s first year of eligibility for induction, waiting longer than any other artist for the honor.

GARY PUCKETT has performed on more than thirty network television shows and prime time specials during his career, even adding a command performance for the President and Prince Charles at the White House. The Union Gap disbanded in the seventies. In 1974, “Young Girl” was reissued in England where it received a silver record award for attaining a top five position on the pop charts, several years after its initial release.

Gary continues to tour nationally & internationally. Gary currently resides in Clearwater, FL with his wife and family.

THE VOGUES From the mid1960’s into the 70’s, “The Vogues” could be heard on radio stations coast to coast. They were also featured on the top television shows of the time like, The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Mike Douglas Show, multiple times with Dick Clark’s iconic American Bandstand, and many more.

The Vogues unique sound was instantly recognizable and memorable. It was a lively fresh rock ’n roll with an American style that pierced the British invasion.” Their first song to top the charts at #4 and capture hearts was “You’re The One” written by Petula Clark in 1965.

Who can forget “Five O’clock World?” Not only was this a top 5 single in 1965, it remains a top request by fans today.  In 1997, comedian and actor Drew Carey adopted this as the theme song for his very popular television sitcom, adding new fuel to the Vogues fire.

Military Veterans, particularly those who served during the Vietnam conflict, remember how Armed Forces Radio regularly featured the Vogues hits including, “You Are My Special Angel?” You may recall, Bobby Helms first hit the airwaves with this unforgettable lyric, but the Vogues took it to another level using lush orchestration combined with powerful vocal harmonies to make it even more memorable.

Also appearing in 1968, “Turn Around Look at Me” took the world by storm. It was also an orchestral love ballad that established this new sound for the Vogues and firmly locked it in time.

Four gold records,  two platinum albums, and fifty plus years later, The Vogues continue to sellout audiences at concerts around the country.

The Vogues were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001, and remain one of the top vocal groups on the oldies concert circuit today.

The Classics IV , one of the most popular and influential pop groups of the 60s and 70s, originated in Jacksonville, Florida. They achieved phenomenal success with hits “Spooky,” “Stormy,” “Traces,” and Everyday With You Girl, all of which sold well over a million copies and were awarded gold and platinum discs by the Recording Industry of America. All four hits appeared in the 1977 film “The Chicken Chronicles” in addition to various other movie soundtracks including the hit HBO Series “Six Feet Under: By the 1970s The Classics IV accumulated a total of 16 Billboard chart hits, solidifying them as a hit making pop group and crediting The Classics IV with the development of “Southern Soft Rock.” To date The Classics IV have recorded 17 albums including “Spooky,” “Lil Bit of Gold” “Traces” and “Golden Greats.” In 1993 The Classics IV were inducted into The Georgia Music Hall of Fame. The Classics IV popularity is stronger than ever performing in a variety of venues to rave revues and receiving back to back invitations to join hugely popular Happy Together Tour. The group continues captivating audiences with their professionalism, good humor, and ingratiating personalities. In 2011 The Classics IV returned to the studio with the release their album, “A New Horizon,” blending the old with the new. 2015 saw the first ever “Live Album” with the release of “One Stormy Night – The Classics IV Live At The Ritz” and in 2020 the group received great revues and airplay with the first ever Christmas release “All I want For Christmas Is You”.

THE COWSILLS  Back in the 1960’s, four brothers who wanted to be The Beatles formed a band called The Cowsills. The original Cowsills consisted of Bill on guitar, Bob on guitar and organ, Barry on bass and John on drums. Early gigs were at school dances and churches around their home in Newport, RI. Eventually, as their harmonic sound was perfected, they got a regular gig on Bannisters Wharf in Newport where they would sing Beatle songs hour after hour. Early recordings were released by the four brothers on Joda and Mercury Records. Barbara (“mini-mom”) joined the group to record The Rain, The Park and Other Things and shortly thereafter 7 year old Susan and brother, Paul, were added to the group. They were signed by MGM records and the group began it’s climb to the top!

I’d like to know what band is planning to show up as Badfinger. Is it Joey Molland’s Badfinger (he being the only member left from the Come and Get it days)? Or one of the other groups that made the rounds under that name, featuring other less-well-known later members?

We saw an early version of the Happy Together Tour right around 1985 in Baltimore and were highly entertained. It included The Mamas and Papas, Spanky and Our Gang, Gary Puckett, Gene Clark, Herman’s Hermits (minus Herman), the Grass Roots, Mitch Ryder, etc. It was a great couple of shows.

Just saw the Cowsills at Mohegan Sun and they sound very good. Last year I walked out of the Association because they do not sound good at all. There was one original and he should have been replaced. Watched a 2023 happy together video and I wondered what relation these guys singing Vogues tunes have to that band. They did not sound good. At the very least, call it a tribute.

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy's Relationship Timeline

Swift and Healy dated for a few months in 2023, which she recounts on 'The Tortured Poets Department' album

who performs in happy together tour 2023

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy 's short-lived relationship sparked a lot of conversation.

The musicians initially met in the fall of 2014 but didn't date until years later.

Shortly after The 1975 frontman was spotted attending Swift's Eras Tour in Nashville in May 2023, the two were photographed holding hands at New York City's Casa Cipriani, where they were out with mutual friend and collaborator Jack Antonoff .

Their relationship came just a month after PEOPLE confirmed Swift's split from longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn , which a source told PEOPLE was a result of "differences in their personalities ."

Following their whirlwind romance, PEOPLE confirmed the "Karma" singer and 1975 frontman broke up in June, noting their relationship was "always casual."

Most recently, Swift recounted the highs and lows of their relationship on The Tortured Poets Department album.

From the beginnings of their friendship to their short-lived romance, here's a timeline of Swift and Healy's relationship through the years.

November 19, 2014: Taylor Swift and Matty Healy first meet

Swift reportedly first met Healy when she attended a 1975 concert in Los Angeles along with pals Selena Gomez and Ellie Goulding . Swift later shared photos and a video from the concert on Nov. 21, captioning the since-deleted post with lyrics from the band's song "The City": "Yeah you wanna find love, Then you know where the city is."

November 22, 2014: Taylor Swift wears The 1975 merch

A few days after the 1975 concert, Swift was photographed wearing the band's merch during an outing in Los Angeles ahead of her performance at the American Music Awards. Earlier that month, Healy had also rocked a shirt featuring Swift's 1989 album cover on stage, further prompting speculation about their relationship.

November 29, 2014: Matty Healy says he would date Taylor Swift

Following Swift's appearance at the 1975 concert, Healy was asked about the singer during a radio interview with Shazam Top 20, during which he revealed that they exchanged numbers at the Los Angeles show.

When the DJ inquired about them possibly dating, Healy replied, "Let's just see what happens," per E! News . He added, "I mean bloody hell, what am I going to do? Go out with Taylor Swift ? She's a sensation, I wouldn't say no."

Earlier that October, Swift had maintained that she was happily single during an interview with E! News. "It's not that [I've sworn off dating] as much as I'm just very protective of my happiness," Swift told the publication. "I found a place in my life that feels really great and I'm not willing to compromise that for just anyone, and so, you can paraphrase that all you want into something very extreme, but they make what I say extreme no matter what I say."

She added, "So I'm really happy about the fact that being single doesn't feel like being alone. I have love in my life, I just don't have a relationship, and that feels really natural right now."

December 4, 2014: Taylor Swift attends another The 1975 concert with Karlie Kloss

In early December, just a few days before her 25th birthday, Swift attended another 1975 concert in N.Y.C. alongside Karlie Kloss and Lily Aldridge. Following Healy's comments about Swift, the outing sparked even more rumors that the pair were an item .

January 20, 2015: Matty Healy shuts down Taylor Swift dating rumors

A month later, Healy publicly shut down rumors he was dating Swift during a radio interview with Australia's 2DayFM. "It's fake," he said, per E! News . "It's all bloody fake. It's a farce!"

"We met each other, we exchanged numbers in the same way that a lot of people in this kind of world do, and we spoke occasionally," he continued. "She's the biggest pop star in the world and I'm in Australia. There's no relationship or anything happening. It's just funny how people really, really buy into that."

February 25, 2015: Taylor Swift and Matty Healy hang out at a Universal Music Brits party

After diffusing dating rumors, the two hung out as friends at a pop-up event held at London's Soho House for Universal Music Brits. The two were seen huddled up at the DJ booth alongside Ellie Goulding and Nick Grimshaw. At the same event, Swift was also pictured with Calvin Harris, whom she would go on to date later that year.

March 2016: Matty Healy clarifies Taylor Swift comments

Speaking with Q magazine, Healy opened up about his rumored romance with Swift, calling the connection a "flirtation."

"I don't do anything else [besides music], right, so it doesn't leave a lot of room for me going out, or shagging someone," he told the publication, per NME . "So the one time I did have a flirtation with a girl it ends up going everywhere…. I mean, I got on E! News and people were like, 'Who's Matt Healy?' so that was cool."

He continued, "If I had gone out with Taylor Swift I would've been, 'F---ing hell! I am NOT being Taylor Swift 's boyfriend.' You know, 'F---. THAT.' That's also a man thing, a de-masculinating, emasculating thing."

Shortly after the interview was published, Healy wrote an open letter saying that his comments were being taken out of context. He also detailed how dating rumors between him and Swift quickly escalated in the media.

"Since she came to my show in December of 2014, I would say that 90 percent of journalists that have interviewed me have asked about either her as a person or what our 'interaction' was like," he wrote, per Elle . "I have said on countless occasions that I found her to be one of the most gracious, hard working, creatively gifted, and beautiful women that I have had the pleasure to meet. I personally have a lot of respect and admiration for her. Why would I not?"

He continued, "I didn't even date Taylor, but the media's incessant and brutal obsession with her has meant that even a guy who DIDN'T DATE HER has been so battered by their never-ending questions that he's inevitably said something that can be lifted and molded into something that resembles 'shade'. It's really sad."

September 2022: Matty Healy shuts down rumors of a Taylor Swift collab on Midnights

Ahead of the release of Swift's Midnights album , Healy found himself connected to the singer once again as rumors circulated that The 1975 would be featured on the album . However, much to fans' dismay, Healy shut down the rumors, writing, "I would love that! But unfortunately FAKE NEWS :("

November 2022: Matty Healy reveals he did work with Taylor Swift for Midnights

A month after the album's official release, Healy revealed that he did in fact work on a collaboration with Swift for Midnights , though it was never released.

"We actually worked a bit on that but then the version of it never came out," the star said in an interview with KROQ's Klein/Ally Show for Audacy's DTS Sound Space.

After the crowd booed Healy's revelation, the "About You" singer was quick to defend Swift, telling them, "It was for reasons that are not to be criticized ... She's amazing."

In early January 2023, Swift made a surprise appearance at the 1975's concert in London, performing her single "Anti-Hero" for the first time live. She also performed a cover of The 1975's "The City" during the impromptu appearance.

April 8, 2023: PEOPLE confirms Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have broken up

In April 2023, PEOPLE confirmed that Swift had broken up with her longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn . A source close to the Grammy winner and the Conversations with Friends actor told PEOPLE their split was largely caused by "differences in their personalities ."

"They've had rough patches before and always worked things out, so friends thought they would take some time apart but eventually come back together," the source said, noting that "ultimately" Swift and Alwyn "weren't the right fit for one another."

The source added that Swift's superstardom was another factor in the split: "Joe has struggled with Taylor's level of fame and the attention from the public."

May 2023: Matty Healy attends Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in Nashville

In May 2023, Swift and Healy found themselves at the center of dating rumors once again as The Sun reported they were seeing each other. Shortly after the dating rumors surfaced, Healy was spotted attending several shows at Swift's Eras Tour in Nashville.

In photos from the Saturday concert, Swift's pal Gigi Hadid could be seen playfully rubbing Healy's shoulders as he smiled and held his hand to his chest during Swift's performance.

Earlier that night, Healy joined opener Phoebe Bridgers for her set, as he wore the Grammy nominee's go-to skeleton onesie and played guitar throughout her time on stage.

May 11, 2023: Taylor Swift and Matty Healy hold hands in N.Y.C.

The musicians were joined at the New York City recording studio gathering by several other stars including Kendrick Lamar , Florence Welch , actress Margaret Qualley and her fiancé Jack Antonoff — one of Swift's longtime collaborators.

June 5, 2023: Taylor Swift and Matty Healy break up

In June, PEOPLE confirmed that Swift and Healy have broken up . "She had fun with him, but it was always casual," a source told PEOPLE. "They are no longer romantically involved."

"They were never boyfriend-girlfriend or exclusive and were always just having fun," another insider tells PEOPLE. "There is no drama, and who knows what could happen again. It was a good time and ran its course."

July 2023: Taylor Swift and Matty Healy reconciliation rumor gets shut down

Just a month after their split, it was reported that the two were back together. However, a source quickly shut down that rumor to PEOPLE . "They are absolutely not together and aren't even in contact anymore," the source close to Swift explained. "She is enjoying being single and has been spending time in the studio and hanging out with friends in New York City. This is all B.S."

April 19, 2024: Taylor Swift sings about Matty Healy on The Tortured Poets Department album

In addition to recounting how her six-year relationship with Alwyn came to an end, Swift also details her short-lived romance with Healy in the spring of 2023. On “Guilty as Sin?” Swift sings about having strong romantic feelings for someone from her past while in a relationship with someone else, seemingly noting that she was already crushing on Healy before her relationship with Alwyn officially ended.

Then on “Fresh Out the Slammer,” Swift sings about feeling ready and able to dive into a new romance after exiting a different relationship that was holding her back. The song also hints that her new love is not American, as she sings that she’s returning “to the one who says I’m the girl of his American dreams.” (Both Healy and  Alwyn are English .)

She also appears to address the intense criticism that surrounded their relationship with the track “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” (on which she convinces herself that she can change her man's ways in spite of the world thinking he's bad news).

On “loml,” Swift reveals the relationship was not meant to last as sings about rekindling an old flame, only to see the relationship crash and burn.

“It was legendary / It was momentary / It was unnecessary / Should’ve let it stay buried,” she sings. “Oh what a valiant roar / What a bland goodbye / The coward claimed he was a lion / I’m combing through the braids of lies / ‘I’ll never leave’ / ‘Nevermind.’”

The Spice Girls: Melanie B, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams And Emma Bunton

Spice Girls reunite at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party

David Beckham shares video of former girl group singing their hit Stop at private club Oswald’s in London, as Mel B hints at a tour

The Spice Girls have reunited for a rare performance featuring all five members – at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party, where they danced to their classic hit Stop.

The party was held on Saturday at Oswald’s, a private members’ club in London, with the likes of Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria and Gordon Ramsay also attending.

During the party, Beckham – along with fellow Spice Girls Geri Halliwell-Horner, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Emma Bunton – sang along to Stop as well as performing the signature choreography from the single off their 1997 sophomore album Spiceworld.

Beckham’s husband, David Beckham , posted a video to Instagram where he gleefully looked on. “I mean come on,” the 48-year-old former footballer captioned the video.

Victoria responded in the comments, writing: “Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much!”

Brown also hinted at a potential reunion tour. “About last night #tourdatescomingsoon,” she shared, reposting the video to her Instagram story.

Last month, Brown teased in an interview with Today that the Spice Girls were working on something “very good” together – though she did not confirm rumours of a tour at the time.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls, who formed in 1994 and officially split six years later in 2000.

They have reunited multiple times over the years – most recently as part of their 2019 Spice World tour, which Beckham did not attend. The last time all five members performed publicly was in 2012 for the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.

In 2023 the Beckhams’ marriage was explored in a four-part Netflix documentary series, which also addressed his rise to fame as a footballer and the extensive press speculation that he allegedly had an affair while playing for Real Madrid in 2003.
