A charming, walkable town, Cobh’s tidy size belies its global impact. Cobh was ranked as one of the most beautiful small towns in Europe by Condé Nast Traveler. It was from here that the mighty RMS Titanic last set sail on her maiden voyage; a young girl called Anne Bonny left home and became a Caribbean pirate; and Ellis Island’s very first immigrant, 17-year-old Annie Moore, began her journey.

Titanic Experience Cobh, County Cork

Cobh's Titanic legacy

Settle in to hear the unabridged version of Titanic’s story, and its lasting impact on Cobh

A visit to this town simply isn’t complete without a trip to Titanic Experience Cobh . Set within the original White Star Line ticket office, this exhibition tells the story of all 123 passengers who boarded the ship in Queenstown, as Cobh was then known, on the final leg of Titanic’s ill-fated journey in 1912.

As one saw her steaming slowly, a majestic monster floating it seemed irresistibly into the harbour, a strange sense of might and power pervaded the scene. The Cork Examiner, 1912

Today, the ocean liners that sail into Cobh are every bit as impressive as the “ship that launched a thousand dreams”. As the world’s second-largest natural harbour, as well as 2019 Cruisers’ Choice Destinations Awards winner, an afternoon in Cobh watching the boats sail by is well spent!

Set in the restored 19th century railway station, the Cobh Heritage Centre is a must to learn all about the history and heritage of Cobh. Here, you can learn about the Lusitania wreck that Cobh residents witnessed, or the “forgotten Irish” and their journeys to penal colonies across the world, or even trace your own ancestors’ journey on your genealogy search.

If you want to familiarise yourself with Cobh, the best way is to hit the streets. There are three walking trails for you to try that will take you in every direction around the town. The routes are helpfully signposted all along the way, and best of all, it’s free!

In the centuries following Ireland’s Great Famine, no fewer than 2.5 million people – almost half the island’s current population – departed Ireland from this very spot. On a cold December day in 1891, 17-year-old Annie Moore  was just one of the intrepid millions who set sail for the US in search of a better life. After twelve long days spent at sea, Annie became the first person to reach New York via Ellis Island.

But almost two centuries earlier, another young girl with a far feistier spirit left Ireland behind from this same spot. Red-haired and roguish, Anne Bonny travelled all the way to the Caribbean in the early 1700s and became an infamous pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy.

Famous visitors to Cobh include revolutionaries Padraig Pearse and James Connolly, and double act, Laurel and Hardy, whose signature tune “Cuckoo Waltz” was played at St Colman’s Cathedral upon their arrival in 1953. That’s some welcome!

St Colman's Cathedral © Shutterstock

St Colman's Cathedral

Cobh’s undeniable beauty makes it irresistible to budding photographers. A firm favourite is Bandon Hill, with the houses there locally known as “The Deck of Cards”. From this steep hill, you have a bird’s-eye view of the whole harbour and mighty St Colman's Cathedral – a magnificent, 49-belled building that’s worth a trip all on its own.

Cobh redefines charming with its rows of candy colored homes along the water and towering cathedral standing sentry over the harbor. Condé Nast Traveler

A little further out into the harbour is Spike Island . Once home to a 6th century monastery, then a star-shaped defensive fort, it was converted to a prison that closed in 2004. Today, visitors can take a ferry out to Ireland’s very own Alcatraz and experience what life was like for the soldiers, convicts – and even the children imprisoned here in Victorian times. Once known as “Ireland’s Hell”, today it’s an enjoyable day out, chock full of wild stories...

Cape Clear, County Cork

There’s a reason why the residents here call Cork city the “real capital of Ireland”

The best thing about Cobh is that it’s a gateway to not only Ireland’s Ancient East , but also the Wild Atlantic Way .

From Cobh, you can take the train or bus back to bustling Cork city. From the city, you can kiss the stone to get “the gift of the gab” at Blarney Castle , or go back east by bus to the sunny south east of counties Wexford and Waterford, or even take the train all the way back to Dublin.

You have a lot of options, too, if you want to explore the rugged Wild Atlantic Way. You can venture out further in County Cork, as the “Rebel County” is more than just its city. By bus, see the wilds of County Clare, the music scene of Dingle, Limerick city, or even bohemian Galway city! Or, wind through the countryside by train and stop at the beautiful Killarney National Park , and finish up in Tralee.

The only question left is: where first?

Haulbowline is an island in Co. Cork Harbour off the coast of Ireland and only 10 minutes by ferry from the center of Cobh.

Fortifications were built here in the early 1600′ along with the world’s first yacht club. The island was also an important base for the British army.

Planning to visit Cobh and don’t know where to stay yet? Here’s our list of best hotels in Cobh that you can choose from.

Deck of Cards

Can you reach the top? The Deck of Cards forms a vertiginous hill built with candy-colored homes that defy gravity.

The amazing terraced buildings, which are overshadowed by St. Colman’s Cathedral and give some of the most breathtaking vistas Ireland has to offer, are perhaps the most photographed scene in Cobh.

Please keep in mind that these are people’s homes, so don’t go shooting shots from too close range, or banging on their doors, or anything like that.

With the emergence of online communities, the Deck of Cards residences have grown in popularity and are now Cobh symbols.

Based on my experience, the best side of the Deck of Cards is from the lower level of the little West View Park. You should visit there!

Kelly's Bar

Ideally situated in the heart of Cobh’s bustling old town, Kelly’s is a famous bar with a laid-back vibe and a warm welcome for both residents and visitors.

Tom Kelly and his team of pleasant and experienced personnel manage the pub, which caters to all tastes, from a morning coffee with a freshly cooked scone to a bustling party environment on weekends.

Live music is performed regularly throughout the year and every night throughout the summer months. A range of local singers and bands perform anything from traditional Irish music to modern music, with the occasional impromptu sing song thrown in for good measure.

I recommend this Bar because it offers free WiFi and, in addition to an enormous assortment of beers, wines, as well as spirits, it also provides an assortment of specialty coffees.

There are five food trucks at the Boatyard, serving a variety of cuisines. Hansum, a favorite of mine that also runs in the Marina Market, has joined the fray with its delectable rotisserie chicken options.

This is an absolute must-try! Hook’D Fish and Chips is new and I’m guessing they’ll serve traditional Cork fish and chips. Bunz Gourmet Burgers serves the greatest gourmet burgers. Mama Bear’s is a delicious alternative in the Boatyard, serving the tastiest ice cream and more.

Kieron O’Connor Photography, situated near Cobh Harbour, features a colorful gallery and shop filled with images from all across County Cork and Ireland. You’ll find ready-to-hang mounted prints and framed pictures.

Kieron’s photography book ‘Lockdown Ireland 2020’ is additionally accessible; this book is full of amazing images of Cobh and Cork Harbour captured during this period.

We visited Sixteen historical places throughout our excursion, including ambush sites, safe shelters, training halls, as well as barracks. We also tour jail facilities for Cobh republican volunteers and learn about their influence on Irish history.

The tour guide brings the town to life by telling us about the people, locations, and tales of Ireland. We learn stories on anything from the crop famine to the Irish struggle for independence as well as everything in between.

Our guide is a kind and intelligent host who keeps our attention throughout the tour, and his anecdotes are priceless.

Cobh Travel Tips

Summer is the finest season to visit Cobh. The weather is beautiful in Ireland, the port town is alive and well during this time.

Spring and fall are also fantastic times to visit Cobh, although the atmosphere is more casual. I traveled to Cobh in May, and the weather was pretty uncertain that day.

Despite its location on an island, Cobh is very accessible. I had planned a road trip for my holiday, so I chose to rent a car in Cobh.

Choosing this option provided me with the freedom and flexibility to design my schedule as I saw fit and make spontaneous decisions along the route.

The biggest benefit of owning a car in this location is that you may visit various destinations in Cork in a single day.

Cobh is generally regarded as a safe destination to visit in Ireland. Despite the initial negative impression, I felt safe there.

Even while it is not difficult to keep safe in Ireland, you ought to continue to use reasonable caution while adhering to basic safety guidelines.

why visit cobh ireland

Hi, I’m Christine – a full-time traveler and career woman. Although I’m from the Philippines, my location independent career took me to over 40 countries for the past 8 years. I also lived in 3 continents – from the Caribbean, South East Asia to Africa. But despite living in several countries, my love for Ireland remains the same. A country that had been a part of my life since I was 14 because of my love for Irish music and bands. Ireland Travel Guides was born because of this passion and hopefully, in some little ways, this website will be able to help you on your next trip to Ireland.

View of Cobh, Ireland from Cork Harbour

Cobh (pronounced Cove) is one of the most charming, colorful and pretty towns in Ireland with a picturesque waterfront location in Cork Harbour. In fact, in 2019, the travel bible Condé Nast Traveler voted Cobh one of the 25 most beautiful small towns in Europe saying that “Cobh redefines charming with its rows of candy-colored homes”. For those of you who want a little more than just scenic views, Cobh, which is located in Ireland’s Ancient East , can also deliver in this regard. Given the historic importance of this town (it was known as Queenstown between 1845 and 1922), it is no wonder that there are so many interesting and unique things to see and do in Cobh. So regardless of whether you are planning to do a day trip to Cobh or want to spend a few days exploring the town and its surroundings, make sure that you have enough time to see the highlights of Cobh, at least.

In this ultimate guide of what to do in Cobh, you will find my personal favorite sights (including Cobh Cathedral, Spike Island and the Titanic Experience Cobh), as well as the other top attractions in Cobh.

1. The Titanic Experience Cobh

Titanic Experience Cobh, Ireland

The last 123 passengers to board the RMS Titanic were picked up in Cobh, or what was then called Queenstown , before embarking on their ill-fated journey. As part of the Titanic Experience Cobh you will follow in the footsteps of some of these real passengers and learn about the harsh conditions on board in third-class and the luxury experienced by first-class passengers. In addition to the unusual concept behind the tour, one of the highlights for many is that the tour takes place in the actual White Star Line Ticket Office Building where the tickets for the RMS Titanic were sold.

It generally takes about an hour to see this attraction. Tours run every 15 minutes, but it can get busy in peak season, so book ahead of time or keep your schedule flexible.

2. Titanic Trail Walking Tour

The Titanic Trail Walking Tour is the essential tour if you want a real insight into the fascinating facts and stories directly connected with the RMS Titanic, as well as other interesting information about the RMS Lusitania, Cobh in general, and its surroundings. It is a unique way to explore this town and without the knowledge of the great tour guide, we would certainly have overlooked some very intriguing facts along the route. There are a variety of other walking tours, including a Titanic Ghost Tour also offered by Michael Martin. You can find out more on the website.

3. Cobh Titanic Memorial Garden

RMS Titanic Memorial Garden, Cobh, Ireland

Situated on the far side of the town, the Cobh Titanic Memorial Garden offers stunning views of the mouth of Cork Harbour, where the RMS Titanic was moored before its final departure. This peaceful remembrance garden by the waterfront is a nice little addition for everyone interested in the RMS Titanic and who would like to explore this hilly town. It also offers a great view of Cork Harbour, which, by the way, is the second largest natural harbor in the world!

4. St. Colman’s Cathedral

St. Colman's Cathedral, Cobh, Ireland

Situated on the hillside, St. Colman’s Cathedral is, without a doubt, the most eye catching and recognizable landmark of Cobh. Not only do you see it, you also hear it. The 49-bell carillon in the Cathedral is one of the largest in Ireland and the UK, and interesting, also contains Ireland’s largest bell (St. Colman weighing in at 3.6 tons). Construction work began on the neo-Gothic style cathedral in 1868 and took 47 years to complete. The highly detailed carvings deserve a special mention, as well as the gruesome gargoyles on the exterior of the cathedral. From the car park of the church you have a great vantage point over Cobh and the harbor.

5. Port of Cobh and Cork Harbour Boat Tours

Boat Tour of Cork Harbour with view of Cobh, Ireland

Why not take to the water to enjoy a completely different view of Cork Harbour and perhaps even encounter some wildlife? There are a few different boat hire options including Cork Harbour Boat Hire and Ocean Escapes that provide a variety of tours to suit your interests and requirements. Don’t forget to bring your camera along to get some great panoramic shots of Cobh, nearby Crosshaven, Monkstown, Spike Island and even Blackrock Castle and Cork City.

6. Best Instagram Places in Cobh

Best View in Cobh - West View, Cobh, Ireland

Cobh is a very photogenic town and there are many great photo opportunities. One of the most popular is a snap of the brightly colored row of terraced houses on West View , which are stacked on top of each other at a seemingly precarious angle, like a deck of cards. Behind them is the all imposing cathedral. Be prepared for a climb as the hill is very steep!

Some other good photo locations are Kennedy Pier , John F. Kennedy Memorial Park , the grounds of the St. Colman’s Cathedral and, of course, by boat from the harbor.

7. The Sirius Arts Centre

Why not sample the best culture and arts that Cobh has to offer in the Sirius Arts Centre (next to the Tourist Information Office). Located in the beautiful Old Yacht Club that once belonged to the oldest yacht club in the world (the Royal Cork Yacht Club founded in 1720), the impressive building alone is worth a visit. Diverse talks, music concerts and art exhibitions are held in this multidisciplinary center and there is also a residency program for artists. Check out the website for the latest news and information about upcoming events.

8. Lusitania Memorial

Lusitania Memorial Cobh, Ireland and the former Cunard Line Offices, Cobh, Ireland

Cobh, unfortunately, has seen many other maritime tragedies over the years. In 1915, nearly 1200 people died off the Old Head of Kinsale when a German U-Boat torpedoed the Lusitania. As a mark of respect to all those who lost their lives in the disaster and to the locals who helped in the rescue operation, the Lusitania Memorial was erected in the center of the town. Many of the victims are buried in the Old Church Graveyard a short distance outside Cobh.

9. Cobh Museum

Cobh Museum is located in the old Presbyterian Church perched above Cobh Train Station. Unique artifacts, stories and personal communications related to the Lusitania, among other things, on display here. The exhibitions, some of which are permanent, are small, but so is the modest entrance fee. This museum is often overlooked by tourists but can be a nice addition to the places to visit in Cobh. This is a good stop to be added to your itinerary if you have a bit of time to spare.

10. Walk the Promenade in Cobh

John F. Kennedy Park and Promenade Cobh, Ireland

A walk along the promenade is a great way to experience Cobh and is a lovely activity, if the weather is good. Take some time to enjoy John. F. Kennedy Memorial Park with its many sculptures, perhaps listen to some bands playing in the bandstand and simply watch the boats and cruise liners pass by in the harbor. There is also a playground to keep little ones entertained. Don’t forget to check out the good views of St. Colman’s Cathedral from here as well. You can continue the walk past the Sirius Arts Centre and behind the Cobh Heritage Centre along the quayside. From here you can clearly see the island of Haulbowline , where there is an Irish Naval Base. This waterside walk is very popular with both tourists and locals alike.

11. Cobh Heritage Centre

Cobh Heritage Centre, Cobh, Ireland

The Cobh Heritage Centre is an interesting stop for any tourist, but especially those of you who are of Irish ancestry. Delve into the history of Irish emigration and learn more about the factors that drove people to emigrate including the Irish Famine in the mid 19th century. You will also see what life was like on the so-called coffin ships to America, as well as the ships with convicts bound for Australia. There is also a detailed exhibit on the sinking of the Lusitania. Visitors can also take a break for some refreshments in the café.

12. Spike Island

Spike Island in the middle of Cork Harbour may not seem like a remarkable island at first glance, until you learn more about its history over the last 1500 years. In the 6th century, it was home to a monastic settlement, while in the 19th century, the star-shaped fortress functioned as a depot for up to 2300 prisoners, most of whom were shipped to Australia. Today Spike Island is known as one of Ireland’s best tourist attractions and in 2017 actually won the award of Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction in the World Travel Awards. The guided tour of Spike (including ferry boat) is highly recommended and should be booked in a few days in advance to avoid disappointment. Boats depart from Kennedy Pier in Cobh several times a day for the 20-minute trip during peak season to Spike Island. You should plan at least 3.5 hours for your visit.

13. Annie Moore Statue

Annie Moore Statue, Cobh Ireland

Many immigrants, including thousands of Irish passed through the inspection halls at Ellis Island Station in New York. Annie Moore is remembered because she was the first immigrant to be processed at the station on the 1st of January 1892, along with her two younger brothers after completing a 12-day journey from (what was then known as) Queenstown. To commemorate this journey two statues of Annie and her younger brothers exist, one in Ellis Island, New York, and one outside the Cobh Heritage Centre.

14. Escapade Cobh

Have had enough of regular sightseeing and would like to experience one of Cobh’s newest and most popular attractions? Then Escapade Cobh is for you! Why not put your mind to work solving clues to break out of the Spike Island prison cell? Or alternatively, think outside the box in Sherlock Holmes and Bank Heist themed escape room games. This attraction is also a good option if the weather is not suitable for lots of sightseeing. Check out the website for details about bookings, some of which can even be taken at short notice.

15. Fota Wildlife Park

Giraffes at Fota Wildlife Park Cork, Ireland

If you are traveling to Cobh by train or by car, it is easy to add a stop in Fota Wildlife Park to your day out in Cobh. (It is located about 15 minutes away by car.) This spacious wildlife park is known for its conservation and breeding programs (especially the very successful cheetah breeding program) and is great to wander around and explore on a sunny day. Watch out for the cheeky lemurs!

16. Fota House, Arboretum and Gardens

A relaxing place to go from a stroll is in Fota House, Arboretum and Gardens . While it is not a secret spot, it is often overlooked by tourists. In addition to the many rare species of shrubs and trees from the southern Hemisphere, visitors can also enjoy sauntering around the Victorian working gardens, orangery and palm walk.

10 Cool Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland

I’ll be perfectly honest: one of the major reasons we wanted to visit Cobh was to see the view captured in the photo at the top of this post: the view of St. Colman’s Cathedral erupting over the colorful Deck of Cards houses is an image I’ve wanted to see in person for years, and on our most recent trip to Ireland, I was determined to make it happen. It was definitely worth the trip… but stunning views aside, there are still lots of interesting things to do in Cobh!

While I was entranced by Cobh’s unique views, the city (once known as Queenstown, and whose name is pronounced “Cove” not “Cobe”) is best known for being the last port of call for the Titanic before tragedy struck and the ship sank in 1912.

If you’re headed to Cobh for a day (or more!) and are wondering what to do, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Cobh here.

Best Things to Do in Cobh, Ireland

Getting to cobh, getting around cobh, how long to stay in cobh, can you take a day trip to cobh from dublin, visit the cobh heritage centre..

While the Titanic was certainly the most famous ship to pull out of Cobh with Irish passengers, it was far from the only one: Cobh was an enormous port of Irish emigration over the centuries.

Passengers varied enormously, from traditional emigrants seeking fortune in the New World to kidnapped indentured servants to criminals bound for penal colonies like Australia to those fleeing the tragic Irish potato famine.

All of these people leaving Ireland via Cobh are memorialized at the Cobh Heritage Centre, which is an extremely moving and informative stop that definitely deserves to be on your list of things to do in Cobh!

We were impressed with the breadth and depth of the museum and ended up spending even longer there than we intended.

Hand holding up tickets to the Cobh Heritage Centre--visiting here is definitely one of the best things to do in Cobh Ireland!

Check out Spike Island.

Many centuries ago, a monastery existed on Spike Island–but its more recent history is a bit less pleasant.

A military fort, and later a prison, existed on this island in the Cobh Harbour, most famously as a holding cell of sorts of convicts leaving Ireland with a punishment of “transportation”–in other words, being shipped off to Australia or the like.

Today, you can easily add a visit to Spike Island to your list of things to do in Cobh and learn all about the island’s many diverse uses over the centuries, while also enjoying some lovely views.

Photograph the Deck of Cards.

Built in 1850 and technically called West View, the row of colorful houses stretching up a steep street in Cobh are known as the Deck of Cards–and they’re one of the most recognizable features of the city!

The most popular view (as seen at the top of the post) can be experienced from a small park across the street from the houses–but I love the view of the back of the houses as pictured below as well.

Learn all about the Titanic at the Titanic Experience.

As the last port of call for the Titanic before tragedy struck, Cobh is home to plenty of history surrounding the ship: in fact, the museum itself is housed in the former ticket office for White Star Line, who owned the Titanic.

When entering the museum, you’ll be given the name of one of the 123 passengers who boarded the Titanic in Cobh–and after a moving experience of learning about the ship and its demise, you’ll learn one final piece of information: whether the person whose name you were given survived.

Walk the Titanic Trail.

Want to learn more about the Titanic after wrapping up the Titanic Experience?

Consider taking a tour of the Titanic Trail, which will walk you step-by-step through the journey of those who arrived in Cobh to depart Ireland on the Titanic, including paying a visit to the pier that the ship left from.

Book your Titanic Trail tour today!

Marvel at St. Colman’s Cathedral.

Unlike many cathedrals in Ireland, St. Colman’s Cathedral is, quite frankly, not very old–it was only completed in 1919!

However, the cathedral is absolutely stunning, and standing high on the hill above most of the city, completely dominates the skyline.

Don’t miss your chance to visit–after all, you have to climb the hill to visit the Deck of Cards anyway!

Enjoy views of the Cork Harbour.

Stare out at the water from one of the restaurants, piers, or parks along Cobh’s waterfront, and you’ll be admiring the Cork Harbour: it’s a lovely sight, especially on a pretty day (and even lovelier over lunch).

Say hello to Annie Moore.

The very first person to be welcomed to the USA at Ellis Island was a 15-year-old Irish girl named Annie Moore–and near the Cobh Heritage Center, you can check out the statue dedicated to her.

Stop by the Cobh Museum.

Are you one of the millions of people living outside the Emerald Isle who has Irish ancestry?

If so, you may want to stop by the Cobh Museum: the small museum includes a reference library where you can do independent family research–if you suspect one or more of your ancestors may have left Ireland from Cobh, take advantage of the opportunity to take a peek into history!

Since Cobh was such a huge port for Irish emigration over the centuries, a surprising number of Irish people said goodbye to their homeland from this small city.

Grab a drink and watch the world go by.

Plenty of the pubs and cafes in central Cobh have outdoor seating–and on a beautiful day, why not enjoy a Guinness or a cup of tea while overlooking Cobh’s colorful buildings?

Colorful buildings in Cobh Ireland

Cobh is located about 30 minutes east of Cork, under 2 hours south of Waterford, or 3 hours south of Dublin by car (without traffic, of course).

Unless you happen to be staying in Cork, car is probably the easiest way to reach Cobh.

If you are staying in Cork, you could also consider taking the train to Cobh if you don’t want to drive!

We chose to park in the (free) lot right next door to St. Colman’s Cathedral when visiting Cobh, and can recommend it as an easy and affordable parking option (however, since you’ll be at the top of the hill, be prepared to head down a steep hill to reach the city center and also to get back to your car!).

Central Cobh is very small and easy to get around on foot, so you likely won’t need any other transportation during your stay (with the exception of a boat to get to Spike Island).

However, fair warning: Cobh has incredibly steep hills! Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to climb when visiting Cobh.

Road leading up a hill in Cobh Ireland

If you simply want to enjoy the town and check out a few of the select top things to do in Cobh, one day in this lovely Irish village is plenty to get a great taste of Cobh.

However, if you want to see most or all of the best things to do in Cobh, and want to take your time seeing all there is to see on Spike Island, you may want to consider spending a couple of days here.

You could almost certainly find a tour company willing to drive you ( like this one , for example), but we wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re extremely short on time and really have your heart set on visiting Cobh while in Ireland.

At a 3-hour driving distance each way, Cobh is really too far from Dublin to make an ideal day trip. If you’re looking for a day trip from Dublin, consider choosing a closer option instead–Ireland is full of beautiful seaside villages!

Want to consider taking a day trip to Cobh from Dublin? This tour gets great reviews and also stops at Blarney Castle!

I was born in Cobh many years ago and went to Boston and now retired in Florida. You have the Cobh travel experience Perfect. would recommend it highly and thanks,

Thanks so much, Kevin!

This was so helpful, have you any restaurant or cafe recommendations?!?

Thank you, Niamh! I remember enjoying our meal at Quays Bar & Restaurant–as I recall the food was good and the view sublime! It was a bit pricey for the area since it was right on the water, but we were fine with the trade-off that day.

I’m traveling over there the first week of October and I’m trying to see the Molgoggers Cobh, were you lucky enough to listen to their wonderful sea shantys anywhere in town while you were there?

Do you know if I can take a picnic lunch to the park across from the Deck of Card Houses?

I sure don’t see why not!

Lots of great info but a few more details would be greatly appreciated. Like street names and park names – hey, maybe even a map. 😃. Thank you for this great info.

It sould just lovely! Is the cruise port close enough to the downtown area for us to walk off the ship and explore the places you’ve described? We will be docking in Cobh for only 8 hours, one day in mid-September.

My understanding is that most ships come in right by the Cobh Heritage Center, which is definitely within walking distance of all these sights. Have a great trip!

A characterful town with a unique place in Ireland's heritage, Cobh has a rich maritime history as the embarkation port for the many people that emigrated from Ireland.

The distinctive town of Cobh (pronounced cove) is built onto the slope of Great Island in Cork Harbour just 15 miles from Cork City . The towering St Colman's Cathedral, French Gothic in style, stands at the top of the hill overlooking the tall brightly coloured buildings of Cobh and the dockside of the most important port of emigration in the country. The port was called Queenstown, renamed following a visit from Queen Victoria in 1849, until it reverted back to its Irish name in 1922.

memorial-statue.jpg

Yet what Cobh is most associated with is the mass exodus from Ireland during the 19th Century. Once called "the saddest place in all of Ireland", Cobh was the embarkation port of some 2.5 million Irish emigrants fleeing famine and poverty between the 1848 and 1950. Their tale is told in the award winning exhibition centre, the Queenstown Story, housed in the disused Victorian Railway by the dockside.

The Best Things to do in Cobh, Ireland

If you are looking for a cute, colourful village to visit in Ireland than look no longer than Cobh in county Cork. Cobh, which is pronounced  cove  is a perfect day trip from Cork or, if you prefer small towns, a great place to spend a night. Best known for being the last port of call to the Titanic, Cobh is loved by history enthusiasts and those who have an interest in the world-famous ship. However, while the Titanic history may be a huge draw, it’s not the only reason to visit Cobh. Cobh has plenty to offer and is one of the most picturesque towns in Ireland. Ready to learn more? Here are the best things to do in Cobh, Ireland.

PS: Planning a trip to Ireland? Check out my Ireland itineraries.

The Best Things to do in Cobh

The titanic experience.

Titanic Experience, Cobh

If you only do one thing in Cobh, make sure that it’s the Titanic Experience. Guests are given the identity of one of the 123 who boarded the Titanic from Cobh. With a guide you are taken on a virtual tour of what it was like on the Titanic. You’ll also get to see Heartbreak Pier- which was the original pier from which the passengers departed. At the end of the tour (which lasts 30 minutes) you will have time to explore the exhibition on your own and find out if your passenger survived.

Since The Titanic Experience is one of the best things to do in Cobh it does get busy so go here first and if you can’t get in right away, put your name in for a different time slot and come back.

The Titanic Trail Walking Tour

For those who have a keen interest in the Titanic and its history, you may want to take a guided tour of the Titanic Trail. On this tour you will step back in time to Cobh as it was during the time of the Titanic and see some of the main spots associated with the ship. The tour only lasts one hour and is a fun way to learn more about the history of Cobh and the Titanic. Book your  Titanic Trail Walking tour here.

  St. Colman’s Cathedral

Cobh Cathedral

St. Colman’s Cathedral, also known as Cobh Cathedral, stands majestically on the hill overlooking Cobh and Cork Harbour. The construction of this Roman Catholic Church began in 1867 but wasn’t completed and consecrated until 1915. The tower has a carillon of 49 bells making it one of the largest in Europe

Cobh Museum

The Cobh Museum is a small museum but definitely worth popping into- especially if you have ancestors from the area. A lot of the exhibitions are maritime and emigration related and you can also find the last written record for the Titanic here.  One of the most interesting aspects of the museum is the, admittedly small, genealogy section where you can do some family research.

Port of Cobh and Cork Harbour

boats in Cork Harbour

The waterfront harbour in front of Cork city is where you can get some of the best views of this small Irish town. The brightly colourful houses and buildings wind their way up the hills. At the top, the impressive St. Colman’s Cathedral towers above them all. It’s a great spot for photos or just to relax and enjoy the views on a sunny day. If you are feeling up for an adventure, you can also hire a boat from Cork Harbour Boat Hire  and tour around the waterfront to get even better views.

Spike Island

Spike Island is Ireland’s version of Alcatraz. The star-shaped fortress was one home to 2300 prisoners but today is opened to tourists looking to explore this unique attraction.

Spike island can be reached by ferry from Cobh. It takes about 15-20 minutes each way and it’s recommended that you allow about 3 hours to explore. Booking your tickets online is highly recommended. You can learn more here.

The Best Day Trip to Cobh

Colourful houses in Cobh

Cobh makes a great day trip and can easily be done from Cork as either a half day or a full day trip. There are a number of tour operators who offer a visit to Cobh in combination with a visit to Blarney Castle but, I honestly think it’s better to do it on your own. These day trips to Cobh only allow for a short time to visit and are not guided. So really, you’re just paying for the transportation and someone to make sure you get back on the bus in the end.

By doing a day trip to Cobh on your own, you can explore at your own pace and even save a few bucks. After all, the train from Cork to Cobh is pretty inexpensive and easy to use. More on that below.

Getting From Cork to Cobh

Cobh, Ireland

Getting from Cork to Cobh is actually quite easy and can be done in thirty minutes of less. If you have rented a car for your stay in Ireland, then it’s easy to drive and not have to worry about following a transportation schedule. However, if you don’t have a car, you can easily travel to Cobh by train which only takes about 25 minutes. The train leaves every hour (sometimes every half hour depending on the season and time of day).

The train station in Cork, Kent Station, is about a 10-minute walk from the heart of Cork city centre. Cobh train station is less than a five-minute walk from Cobh town.

Once you have arrived in Cobh, it’s small enough to warrant exploring by foot. However, there are some pretty steep hills so take your time if needed.

You can find the train schedule online here.

The Best Hotels in Cobh

Commodore Hotel, Cobh

Cobh is a perfect day trip destination, but it’s also a good spot to spent a night too. Once the day-trippers have left, Cobh has a much more local feel which is fun to experience. If you would like to spend the night, here are my recommendations for the best hotels in Cobh.

  • The Commodore Hotel
  • WatersEdge Hotel

Cobh may be small, but it’s absolutely worth a visit especially if you are planning a visit to Cork. From it’s history with the titanic, to it’s picturesque colourful houses, and of course the friendly Irish pubs, you’ll find plenty of things to do in Cobh.

My Irish Trip

A Perfect Day in Cobh, County Cork: Your Ultimate Itinerary

I recently had the pleasure of spending a day in the charming town of Cobh, County Cork. As one of Ireland’s most picturesque ports, Cobh is steeped in history and culture, making it the perfect destination for any day trip. Whether you’re interested in learning about Ireland’s maritime past, sampling delicious local cuisine, or simply taking in the stunning scenery, Cobh has something for everyone.

To help you make the most of your day in this delightful town, I’ve put together my ultimate itinerary for a perfect trip. From visiting iconic landmarks to exploring hidden gems, this itinerary covers all the must-see attractions and experiences that Cobh has to offer. So, grab your walking shoes and let’s get started on a day of adventure and discovery in this wonderful little town!

The History Of Cobh

As I walked through the charming streets of Cobh, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of history all around me. Cobh, formerly known as Queenstown, has a rich and fascinating history that is just waiting to be explored.

A statue of Annie Moore and her two brothers

One of the most significant events in Cobh’s history was its role as the last port of call for the ill-fated Titanic . The Titanic Experience museum , located in the original White Star Line ticket office, is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in the ship’s tragic story. The museum offers an interactive experience that takes visitors through the Titanic’s journey from construction to its final moments.

Cobh also played a crucial role in Ireland’s history as a port of emigration. Between 1848 and 1950, over 6 million people left Ireland via Cobh, many of them seeking a better life in America. The Queenstown Story Heritage Centre tells the story of Irish emigration and the role that Cobh played in this significant period of Irish history.

Another fascinating aspect of Cobh’s history is its connection to the American Civil War. During the war, Cobh was an important base for the Union Navy, and many of the sailors who died in the conflict were buried in the town’s Old Church Cemetery. Today, visitors can explore the cemetery and learn about the town’s role in this pivotal moment in American history.

Overall, Cobh’s history is a rich tapestry of fascinating stories and events that have shaped the town into the charming and vibrant place it is today. Whether you’re a history buff or just looking to learn more about this beautiful corner of Ireland, Cobh is the perfect destination.

Cobh is undeniably one of my favourite destinations to visit in Ireland. Its history is exceptionally fascinating, and the town offers a serene atmosphere, making it a place that I frequently revisit.

However before concluding my visit to the charming town of Cobh, I cannot help but mention the wonderful Fota Wildlife Park, which is located a short drive away. The park is an excellent destination for families and features an impressive array of animals, such as zebras, monkeys, and even majestic giraffes. although, it should be noted that to truly experience everything that Fota Wildlife Park has to offer, visitors should plan to dedicate an entire day to exploring the park fully. 12 Best Things To Do In Cobh, Ireland

February 28, 2024 //  by  Follow Me Away //   Leave a Comment

I have visited Cobh many times it’s one of my favorite places in Ireland. I particularly love the Titanic Experience, the ‘Deck Of Cards’ houses and Spike Island.

If this is your first time visiting Cobh in Cork Ireland this is the article for you.

So if your first time in this amazing town let me hold your hand and guide you through all there is to see and do. Let me share the best things to do in Cobh so you can start planning.

Cobh (pronounced Cove) is located on the south coast of Ireland in County Cork. It’s a fascinating historical port town, a center of naval headquarters and has played a significant role in Irelands history.

One the best things about Cobh is all the colorful houses, if you know me you know how much I love colorful houses. Oh and fun fact Cobh was once known as Queenstown.

So grab a drink, get a comfy seat and let me walk you through planning a trip to Cobh.

Wondering when is the best time to visit Ireland ? I’ve got you.

Fishing boats inside the port. A city with colorful houses in Ireland.

Visit the Titanic Museum

I’m telling you put a visit to the Titanic Visitor Experience Cobh top of your list. I found this place absolutely fascinating.

This special museum was once the original White Star Line Ticket Office, the departing point for passengers of the Titanic in April 1912. It was the last port of call before it’s fateful journey.

123 passengers boarded the ship in Cobh, but only 44 survived the sinking of the ship. This museum takes you on a detailed interactive journey of the Titanic and delves into the lives of its passengers.

It’s a poignant immersive experience from the boarding card you are given to discovering the conditions on board and the events that lead to the disaster. It’s one of the best attractions in Cobh.

For me the most moving part was learning the fate of the passenger whose boarding card I held. I wont give anything away but I did shed a tear.

If you are wondering what to do in Cobh I can’t recommend this enough. It is also one of the things to do with kids in Cobh.

Memorial and signage relating to the Titanic disaster. It is a black plaque with words on it.

Take a Photo with the Deck of Cards Houses

23 bright colorful homes stacked together on a steep hill, yes this is the kind of view I love.

Called the ‘Deck Of Cards’ houses after a local joke saying that if the house at the bottom falls the rest will topple. These 1850’s houses create a stunning panoramic you won’t want to miss.

To get the iconic view do not follow the GPS location instead follow this location which is simple called ‘Park’. You will then need to climb up a small hill and the view awaits.

If you want to take a photo with the cathedral in you will need a very wide lens.  This is a must-see in Cobh Cork.

Grab Some Quiet Time At St. Colman’s Cathedral

St. Colman’s Cathedral is a great example of neo-Gothic architecture and has extraordinary features, such as a bell weighing 3.6 tons and an organ with 2,468 pipes.

It is gorgeous inside and I could have stayed there all day. This is an active church so just be respectful of activities that might be going on inside.

One of the Cobh activities you won’t want to miss.

St. Colman's neo-Gothic cathedral against a blue sky.

Learn about Annie Moore

You have probably never heard of Annie Moore but this Cobh native was the first person to pass immigrant inspection at Ellis Island. At 17 in 1892 she arrived in the US to start her new life.

A statue of Moore is outside the Cobh Heritage Center to mark her significance. She stands with her arms around her siblings, an emblem of the 3.5 million other Irish immigrants who went on a similar journey across the sea.

This is one of the free things to do in Cobh so make sure you take a look.

Visit the Cobh Heritage Center

Since you are now outside the heritage center you might as well go in. Here you can learn more about the Irish emigration and Cobh’s military and naval history.

This museum which is et in a restored Victorian railway station is full of stores of the lives touch by this town.  You will learn about years of Irish history the great famine and much more.

The Cobh Heritage Center even has a genealogist and a record finder so you can trace your own family history (it’s best to book your session in advance).

If genealogy and real life stories are the way a place comes to life for you then this is the best places to visit in Cobh.

The Cobh Heritage Centre is a museum in a restored Victorian railway station. Exhibits tell the story of emigration from this port town.

Discover Spike Island

I just had to take a tour around Spike Island if only because it sounds so intriguing. Its a must-see in Cobh Cork.

The earliest record of the island are from the 7th century, where it is believed to have been the site of a monastery. Since then is has been a fortress a defense post and finally a prison.

The island held convicts, prior to penal transportation. Today it is a tourist destination.

Tours of the island include the ferry ride to and from Kennedy Pier. On the island you will see various prison cells, the star-shaped Fort Mitchel, coastal defense weapons, and brilliant harbor views.

I found the trip fascinating and I highly recommend it if you have time. This is one of the best things to do in Cobh.

Go on a Guided Walking Tour of Cobh

I do love a good walking tour with a local guide. I find you get to see so much and some unique elements when you get out on foot.

There are several walking tour options in Cobh and you can pick the ones you wish to do based on your schedule and level of interest.

I did the Historic Walking Tour . This 2 hour tour visited 16 areas around Cobh and you learn all about the stories and people around historic events.

I also think the 3 hour Cultural Tour , sound fascinating. It includes a Titanic Trail guided tour and a visit to the Queenstown Story Heritage Center. When I next go I’ll also do the Titanic Trail .

I find walking tours one of the best activities in Cobh.

Enjoy Sea Views in Kennedy Park

I always love to find some green space wherever I am visiting and Cobh was no exception. Kennedy Park  is of coarse named after U.S. President John F. Kennedy, who visited the area in 1963.

The park overlooks Cobh harbor and the views are incredible. I went for a  peaceful stroll by the water’s edge and I found it such a welcome break.

The park also features a kid’s playground, memorials to notable figures such as Robert Ford (Antarctic explorer), and a statue by American artist Mary Gregory called “The Navigator.” Oh and there are also two cannons nearby that date back to the 19th century.

It’s one of the free things to do in Cobh and a great way to relax a while.

Walk Around the Colorful Cobh Downtown

Yes the House of Cards are not the only colorful places in Cohn. Downtown is awash with colorful houses and shops and quaint architecture and scenery.

I love walking around the downtown areas when I visit a new place. It’s a fun way to meet the local residents and discover what makes this town so special.

So just put on your comfy shoes and go exploring.

Saint Colman's Cathedral can be seen above the pubs and shops along the main seaside street in Cobh, Ireland

See the Animals at Fota Wildlife Park

A short drive away for Cohn is a place the children are going to love. This 100-acre wildlife park located on Fota Island, near Carrigtwohill is one of the one of the leading tourism, wildlife and conservation attractions in Ireland.

Fota has a great variety of animals that you can encounter, such as lions, giraffes, tigers, Macaws, seals, and penguins. They have talks, animal feedings and regular demonstrations that will keep the children occupied all day.

If you are wondering what to do in Cobh give this place a try. I spent a full day here and still didn’t see everything so I would allocated a whole day here if you can. You can drive there easily or get a train to the park’s own train station.

This is one of the things to do with kids in Cobh.

giraffes gathering in the grass on fota wildlife park in county cork Ireland . One of the things to do in Cobh.

Grab a Guinness in a Pub

Every time I go to Ireland I make sure I visit at least one Irish pub. I don’t drink alcohol but I love the atmosphere.

I’m told there is nothing like drinking one of Ireland’s famous concoctions and while I can’t say if that’s true you can to give it a go, right?

Guinness was introduced in Dublin, Ireland, in 1759 and has since then become a icon and one of Irelands best brews. This is one of the things to do for adults in Cobh.

I would suggest you stop by a pub in Cobh’s main square and enjoy a Guinness or two.  Some of the best pubs in Cobh are Kelly’s Bar, The Roaring Donkey, and The Rob Roy, all of which have a lively, welcoming atmosphere and will ensure you have a good pint.

Go On A Titanic Ghost Tour

While in Cobh if spooky things are your bag then a ghost tour is a must. This Titanic Ghost Tour is a unique way to experience this city.

Every local I spoke to when here had a story to tell me about spooky sightings and eerie noises. On this ghost tour you will learn about a ghost of a young Irish emigrant, the haunting of Pillars Bar, and the ghostly cries of a child at a local hotel.

As you wander the dark street of Cobh you wile hear tales of the paranormal and hauntings before stopping for a final cocktail.

I enjoyed this tour and feel like it is one of the best things to do in Cobh.

Port, houses, restaurants, shops, bars, pubs and Cathedral at night. Famous tourist seaport town and popular touristic destination.

Getting To And Around Cobh

If you are wondering how to get to Cobh I’ve got you.

Cobh is quite accessible as it’s only 20/30 minutes away from Cork. When in Ireland I always drive but you can get here by train, bus or ferry. Here are some Ireland driving tips .

Cork’s main train station, Kent Station, has a line that runs right in downtown Cobh in 25 minutes. You can find a timetable here . There is a also an hourly train from Dublin that will take about 2.5 hours.

A bus leaves Cork from Patrick’s Quay and makes a number of stops around Cobh . A bus from Dublin will take about 3.5 hours.

The Cross River Ferry runs non-stop from 6:30am to 9:30pm and takes about five minutes.

Once in the town it’s so walkable you really won’t need to worry about transport.

As you can see visiting Cobh In Cork Ireland is easier than you might think.

How Long To Spend In Cobh

Don’t make the mistake of thinking this place is so small that there isn’t much to do. For a small place it is bursting with things to do.  There are so many Cobh activities to enjoy.

I would recommend staying in Cobh for at least 1-2 nights so you can get a real taste of what this town has to offer.

I have taken a day trip here but I found there simply isn’t enough time to see everything. But if you only have a day, that’s all you have so just plan ahead and organize yourself well beforehand.

A visit to Cobh is one of the best things to do in Ireland .

A Guide To Visiting The Stunning Cobh Cathedral (St. Colman’s)

Cobh Cathedral (St. Colman’s) is the most iconic buildings in Cobh .

The cathedral is incredibly beautiful and ornate, boasting intricate carvings and stained glass windows.

No visit to Cobh would be complete without seeing St. Colman’s Cathedral, and you’ll discover everything you need to know below!

Some quick need-to-knows about Cobh Cathedral

Although a visit to St Coleman’s Cathedral in Cobh is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Cobh Cathedral is located up a hill not far from the harbour. It’s set in a scenic location with views of Cork Harbour and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a 30-minute drive from Cork City, a 20-minute drive from Midleton and a 1-hour drive from Kinsale .

2. It boasts ample history

St Coleman’s Cathedral has a rich history. The first cornerstone was laid in September 1868 but it wasn’t until 1919 that it was completed. This is partially due to its elaborate neo-gothic design and because construction started and stopped several times.

3. The backdrop to the Deck of Cards

The Deck of Cards is another one of Cobh’s picturesque attractions. The row of colourful houses is a popular photo spot and there are several viewing angles. West View Park is the best place to view the houses front-on with the beautiful St. Colman’s Cathedral in the background!

A brief history of St. Colman’s Cathedral

St. Colman’s Cathedral in Cobh has a rich history, but before it was built, there was a small church known as the “Pro-Cathedral” on the same site.

In 1856, following the death of Bishop Timothy Murphy and the split of the dioceses Cloyne and Ross, Bishop William Keane made the decision that Cloyne should have its own cathedral.

Pre Construction

In 1867, it was decided by a diocesan building committee that Cobh (known as Queenstown) would be the location for the new cathedral.

The committee was given designs from three building firms, but the firm Pugin and Ashlin was awarded the contract with a cost limit of IR£25,000 which was later increased to IR£33,000.

In February 1868 A temporary church was constructed and the old “Pro-Cathedral” was demolished.

19th Century

The first cornerstone of the cathedral was laid in September 1868, however, the main building contract did not start until April the following year.

Construction was well underway, with the walls reaching 3.5 metres tall when Bishop Keane decided he would prefer a more elaborate building.

Because of this, Pugin and Ashlin amended their plans to the point where none of the original plans were followed (aside from the ground plan).

Costs and opening

The mounting costs caused the project’s builder to withdraw and building was halted for a short period but quickly resumed.

By 1879, the cathedral could safely house the congregation, and work continued until 1883 when the builders ran out of funds.

Construction stopped for 6 years and was restarted by Bishop McCarthy in 1889. By 1890, the cathedral had cost IR£100,000.

20th Century

It took four years to complete the huge spire which was finished in 1915. The entire cathedral was finished and consecrated in 1919.

By this time, a total of IR£235,000 had been spent (well over the original budget), making it the most expensive building at that time to be constructed in Ireland!

Things to do at Cobh Cathedral

1. Admire it from the outside, first

Cobh Cathedral is an amazing example of neo-Gothic architecture, specifically the French Gothic style.

The outside is magnificent and the west front and transepts feature ornate rose windows under high arches, while the tower is constructed out of Newry granite.

The west front also has beautiful red Aberdeen granite pillars. The octagonal spire is an impressive 90 metres high with a 3.3 metre bronze cross on top, making St. Coleman’s the tallest cathedral in Ireland.

2. Then quietly have a look around inside

The inside of the cathedral is just as stunning as the outside. But, before you head inside, take time to admire the doorway which is adorned with statues welcoming pilgrims to the church.

Inside, the cathedral has seven bays and the main room is flanked by stone pillars and large stone arches. There are two shrines which are both made using red Middleton marble, as well as the first confessionals.

Things to do near Cobh Cathedral

One of the beauties of St Coleman’s is that it’s a short spin away from many of the best things to do in Cobh .

Below, you’ll find a handful of things to see and do a stone’s throw from the cathedral (there’s some great restaurants in Cobh if you’re in need of a feed!).

8 fun things to do on a day trip to the Ring of Kerry, Ireland

It looks like an amazing place to visit! I loved the photos as well.

Thank you so much Jazeel.

My friend Dennis Kiely was of Irish blood. He visited Cobh Blerney Castle and relatives in Cork somewhere by Cobh. As he passed away this February, I am now considering trying to trace his relatives Auntie and cousins which I do believe are called O’Sullivan. Wish I knew their wearabouts in Cork? Need to work out which ferry I would need to drive my car onto from Oldbury West Midlands to Cobh? Ireland. So wish to trace his relatives and place a memorial in Cobh for him. He was a lovely man. He has a cousin named Liam Kiely and his mum’s maiden name was Whitehouse and his dad’s name was Jim Kiely. Any help would be hugely appreciated.x

Have you ever thought about reaching out to Facebook groups? The Facebook groups ‘Wild Atlantic Way’ or ‘Forgotten Ireland’ might be able to help you and track down those relatives.

Best of luck!
