Top Wine Games to Try

Wine can be a great ice-breaker but sometimes, you need something a little bit extra. Certain occasions just call for wine-related games. Think along the lines of a Christmas gathering. A wine-tasting party, where everybody is just a little uptight. Housewarming parties, birthdays, or even just gathering with family and friends. In this article, we’re going to explore some of the best wine games that can inject a little extra fun into your evening.

What are Wine Games?

When we’re talking about wine games, we aren’t just talking exclusively about drinking games. Drinking games usually conjure up an image of a messy party involving beer and strong spirits, often with them all being mixed together - and wine doesn’t necessarily fit into that image.

However, there are a lot of things you can do with wine, and historically speaking, wine may have more of a precedent for being used in games than other types of alcohol.

The Romans played a game called “passatella”, which was essentially based on teasing and insulting each other, and often ended with knives being drawn. In Ancient Greece, they played a game called “kottabos”, where contestants would flick the ends of their wine from their shallow drinking cups, towards a small disc which was balanced on top of a pole. The aim of the game is to knock the disc, thus causing a loud clatter when it falls onto a second, wider disc that is situated halfway down the pole. The winner was rewarded with cakes, kisses, and occasionally, a new servant.

Kottabos probably won’t make a revival any time soon, thanks to the invention of carpets and a lack of servants to clean them, but there are a heap of other ways that you can incorporate wine into an evening. Many of these games focus on the wine itself, instead of the act of drinking heavily.

Wine Tasting Games

Whether it’s a family Christmas or a gathering with other wine lovers, tasting is an activity you can do at any gathering that has a lot of wine. However, just sitting around a table sipping and discussing can get a bit boring, leading many people to ask “How can I make my wine tasting more fun?”

One of the best ways is to make it a blind tasting. Judging purely by taste is a challenge and a game in itself. It also makes the taste of the wine an important part of the evening, rather than the quantity. You can buy some pre-packaged games that lay out blind tasting for you, but it’s incredibly easy to organise it yourself.

How do you make a wine tasting game?

  • Start by getting a few bottles of wine from different varietals and countries. Whether you stick to red or white is up to you.
  • Find some sort of blindfold, a scarf or a hat will suffice.
  • With your family or friends, take turns tasting the wine while blindfolded. Try to guess the varietal and country the wine was made in. For a more advanced version, you can try to guess the specific region or appellation.
  • Whoever gives the most accurate guess wins. There doesn’t necessarily have to be a winner in a blind wine-tasting, it’s just a fun activity for all of the family - or at least the adult members.

Guess the Price Wine Tasting Games

This is another twist on a blind tasting that will test any wine connoisseurs in your group. What you reward them with is up to you. If you’re playing at Christmas time, perhaps they can be rewarded with an early present. Here is how you can set up a “Guess the Price” wine game:

  • Gather a selection of wines from various price points. If you’re looking for good quality wines that are relatively low in price to throw the experts off, we have a couple of recommendations. Portuguese blends from Dao or Douro that contain Touriga Nacional are a great choice, as are Primitivos from Puglia, like this one .
  • Portuguese Red Blends
  • Touriga Nacional, Vinha Velha, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Roriz
  • Quinta do Pessegueiro

You will be notified when this product is back in stock at

  • San Marzano
  • Pour each wine into a decanter, so there is no way to guess the price from the label.
  • Have each contestant taste the wine, and guess the price.
  • You can reveal the price after each round of tasting, or after all of the wines have been tasted. Whoever gets the most correct guesses wins!

Wine Board Games

Aside from wine games that you can organise yourself, there is a whole world of wine-related board games. These are perfect for Christmas time - because nothing screams Christmas like getting drunk and competitive over a board game. These are our top three wine board games, perfect for a cosy evening with your family or friends.

Our first pick is Sommify , which meshes the spirit of Cluedo (also known as Clue) with a wine tasting. Contestants must use the skill of deductive reasoning to identify mystery wines while rolling dice and advancing their pawns towards “The Grape Divide”, where they must ultimately decide whether the wine is from the New or Old World. It’s very easy to play, and fun for everybody, even if they aren’t a wine expert.

Our next choice will also seem familiar because it’s simply a wine spin on a Christmas classic. Wine-Opoly is essentially Monopoly with wine. The “Go” square becomes “Cheers”, “Jail” becomes “Wine Cellar”, and the most expensive property on the board is “Champagne”. While drinking wine is not a part of the game itself, it is presumed that you’ll be sipping while playing.

Our third option is something slightly different. Viticulture is a complex, well-structured wine - I mean, wine board game - set in antiquated Tuscany. There are a lot of moving parts in this game, seasons change, workers are hired and vineyards are expanded. A game can last around 45-90 minutes, and up to 6 players can join in. The goal is to build the best winery in Tuscany. Due to its complexity, it might be difficult to kickstart a game of Viticulture after a Christmas dinner, but it would be great for a wine game night with some friends. It would also make a fantastic gift for a board game fan.

Wine Tasting Party Bingo Game

In the world of wine games, there are several variations of wine bingo that you can purchase. One is produced by The Big Dot of Happiness but doesn’t incorporate any wine drinking into the game. Another option is Wine-O , which provides a beautiful rustic-looking bingo set. However, it isn’t too difficult to set up your own bingo game at home. This is great for parties, where everybody has brought their own booze, and there are a lot of bottles to choose from.

How does wine bingo work?

  • First, you need a bingo card for every player. This is just a grid, usually 5x5 with the names of all of the different wines that you have gathered. If you don’t have 25 wines, you can create a charcuterie board too, and write the names of the foods in the remaining grid squares. It will be difficult to blind-taste these, but they can just be an easier point.
  • In place of a bingo caller, one person will fill everybody’s glasses with a mystery wine.
  • Contestants then taste the wine, and place a marker on the bingo card, over the name of the wine that they believe they have just tasted.
  • When a contestant completes a row of markers, they shout “Bingo!”, and the bingo caller verifies whether they guessed the wines correctly. If they are incorrect, the game continues without them. If they are correct, they win a prize. Perhaps a bottle of wine.

Wine Card Games

Apart from games that require an actual board, or some preparation beforehand, there are also some card-based wine games that require little more than just pulling out a deck of cards and playing. There is The Wine Game , which is a “go-fish” style card game, with beautiful illustrations.

However, we believe you can’t go wrong with a classic. Kings is played all over the world and is also known as king’s cup, ring of fire, circle of death, or donut. It’s a favourite among students and is fundamentally a drinking game, rather than a wine-tasting game, but there’s no reason why you can’t play kings at a relaxed wine-sipping evening too.

This is how you play kings:

  • Spread a standard deck of cards out, face down, so that everybody who is playing can reach them.
  • One by one, players pick a card and read it aloud. Each card has a different rule associated with it, often initiating some kind of drinking. That’s all there is to it.

These are the usual rules associated with each card. Of course, you can change them as you see fit - perhaps you can even add some wine-related rules.

Ace : Waterfall. All players start drinking at the same time, and can only stop once the player to their left stops. This can often end up with people finishing their glasses, so if you want a more relaxed evening, you can replace this rule with something more civilised.

Two : You. The player who picks the card points at somebody else in the group, who has to drink.

Three : Me. The player who picks the card must take a sip.

Four : Floor. All players have to touch the floor. Whoever touches it last has to take a sip.

Five : Guys. All players that identify as a “guy” have to drink.

Six : Chicks. All players that identify as a “chick” have to drink.

Seven : Heaven. All players have to reach their hands towards the sky. Whoever does it last has to take a sip.

Eight : Mate. The player who picks the card has to choose a “mate”. The “mate” now has to drink whenever the card picker drinks.

Nine : Rhyme. The player who picks the card has to say a word. The player to their left has to come up with a rhyming word. It continues clockwise around the group until somebody can't think of a rhyme, and that person has to drink.

Ten : Categories. Similarly to “rhyme”, the player who picks the card comes up with a category. For example - red wines from Italy. Whichever player fails to think of an Italian red wine on their turn, has to drink.

Jack : Never have I ever. The player who picks the card says something along the lines of, “Never have I ever broken a bone”. Anybody in the group that has broken a bone, takes a drink. Many secrets have been revealed this way.

Queen : Question master. The player who picks the card becomes the question master. Whoever answers their questions has to drink.

King : Make a rule. The player who picks the card comes up with a rule that must be obeyed for the rest of the game. For example - no holding your wine glass in your right hand. Whoever breaks the rule has to drink.

Alternatively, in king’s cup, a large cup is placed in the centre of the room. Whenever a king is drawn from the deck, all players must deposit some of their drink into the cup. Whoever draws the final king has to drink the cup.

This is one example of why playing king’s cup at a wine evening might be preferable to a party. Rather than a disgusting mixture of beer and spirits, the cup will be a new, experimental wine blend!

Seriously though, many of these rules are designed to get people very drunk, so there is no harm in changing some of them to suit the crowd, as you see fit.

Wine Games Q&A

Can you play drinking games with wine.

Yes, you can play several wine-drinking games. Kings, arguably the most popular drinking game in the world, can be played with wine. You can also play games like wine bingo, guess the price, and wine tasting games.

What does it mean to slap a wine bag?

Slapping a wine bag refers to a wine-drinking game called “Slap the Bag”, and frankly, it’s lucky to be called a game. It’s played with the bag of wine from boxed wine. You or somebody else holds the bag of wine above your head as you drink from the spigot. When you’re done, you slap the bag.

How do you spice up a wine night?

It depends on what you mean by “spice up”, but a boring wine night can easily be improved by introducing some wine games. If you have a crowd of wine enjoyers, you could start things off with a game based around wine tasting, before moving on to something more raucous.

What’s a fun drinking game for two?

When it’s just the two of you, the best possible wine games are usually either competitive or prompt deep conversations. “Never Have I Ever” can be easily played with two people, and can reveal some things that you never knew about the person, especially if there is wine involved. “Categories” is also a good option, for getting competitive, and showing off your wine or geography knowledge.

As you can see, wine isn’t the be-all and end-all of your evening. It can be used in a variety of ways: as a gastronomic bingo experience, a projectile, a prize, or simply a beverage to enjoy while playing Monopoly. Whatever you decide, we hope this article has given you some inspiration for your next cosy gathering.

12 Wine Tasting Games for Your Next Party

Wine, laughs, and good friends, oh my! There is nothing quite like a fun gathering of amazing people and good wine. The only thing that could make the party better, would be some wine tasting games to amp up the celebration!

12. Name the Region:

This one might not be for beginners or novices in the wine world. After removing the bottle labels , each participant must be able to correctly name the region that wine originated from. Start off with simple, well-known ones and gradually increase the difficulty. This is the perfect wine tasting game for you wine connoisseurs!

11. Never Have I Ever – The Parental Version:

Have fun, laugh, and remove the weight from your chest. This adult version of the high school game asks you to admit to your parenting mistakes by drinking wine. IE: Never have I ever… done my child’s homework because I forgot to make him do it. If you have, in fact, committed the stated parenting offense, have a sip. Judge not lest ye be judged!

10. A Taste of Wine and Murder:

A good murder mystery ironically seems to liven up any party, and this one is made to fit with your wine theme! There has been a murder! Which one of you did it? You have to solve the murder mystery by tipsily interrogating your party guests. Whodunit? Play with the rules a bit to amp up the wine tasting factor. It requires 6-8 players.

9. Sippy Sip-tionary:

Classic Pictionary with an alcohol-infused twist. Do you like wine? Can you draw or at least get a somewhat identifiable picture down on paper? This hilariously entertaining wine tasting game just gets better as more people are forced to drink. Played just like regular Pictionary, only better because, wine.

8. Wine-egories:

Everyone loves a good old game of categories! This version is based on wine. One person names a wine-related category, varieties, for example. Everyone takes a turn naming a variety of wine until one cannot think of one that hasn’t been used. This person must drink.

7. FREEZE! It’s Time for More Wine:

The lovely hostess will yell freeze, and, you guessed it, you have to freeze. The first to move before the freeze has been lifted must have a few sips of wine. No cheating! Intentionally wiggling to enjoy more wine will not be tolerated.

6. Name the Price Tag:

Purchase a wide range of wines that are varied greatly in price. Be sure to hold onto the receipt. Everyone must guess the price range for each bottle. The person who comes the closest gets a point, the one with the most points gets to pick the drinker.

5. Wineopoly:

Wine? Check. The best board game ever made? Check. That’s right, it’s Monopoly with wine! A wine-based twist on the favorite classic board game. Same basic principle but with a wine theme. Learn fun facts about wine as you drink it and make your way around the board.

Not your typical trivia game. Blend your passion for wine with your passion for all things trivia. Now with a blind taste test aspect and a fun board game set up. Pair it with a game of Wine-opoly (learning about the beloved beverage) and let the knowledge fly.

3. Identify That Aroma:

The point of this game is to correctly identify the aromas in different bottles of wine. If you get it wrong, you have to drink the entire glass. The better you know your wine varieties, the better you’ll be at this particular game.

2. Blind Taste Test:

This fun wine tasting party game entails matching the wine with the bottle. It can be a fun way to learn about the different wine types or build on previous knowledge. Begin with obvious wine choices (white vs red) before becoming more and more difficult (which is not the easiest thing to do while having a wine buzz).

1. He Said What?!? Time for a Sip Game:

This one requires some binge-worthy television or a movie or two. Pick a phrase, any phrase, and when it is said on-screen, you have to drink some wine. A cheesy comedy would work especially well! You could also use certain actions instead of phrases. Get creative, have fun with it.

Sharing a bottle of wine, along with some laughs is the cure to many of life’s little problems. These wine tasting games are a great way to do just that. Have fun, have some drinks, and make some memories.

Hi to everyone. My name is Jason McClain!

As the proprietor of McClain Cellars, I am thrilled to finally do the one thing I have always loved the most. Create amazing wines to be shared with my family and friends. After spending 25 years in the dot-com space, my wife Sofia and I decided to throw caution to the wind and focus on what is really important: family, friends, faith and freedom. These are the pillars of this winery and why I love everything about it.

Our Top Picks

Wine tasting games, 1. wine options.

Wine Options Game

Some countries take their wine so seriously that they even dedicate a game intended to test your wine knowledge. The creation of the Wine Options game is credited to the late godfather of the Australian wine industry and renowned author, Len Evans. This wine game is famously played in New Zealand and Australia and is a huge event.

This game teaches you how to identify wines in terms of region, vintage, and more based on taste and smell alone. You get to learn and enjoy good wine simultaneously; that’s why it’s one of the best wine games. If you’re going to play with friends, you can decide how many wines to sample, how many rounds, questions, and players.

How to Play

  • Players get to sample four to five wines one at a time. They have no idea what the wine is, and they have to guess what it is after analyzing the taste, aroma, and other characteristics.
  • A set of questions will be asked for each wine, starting from general questions like the country where the wine is from to more specific questions like the region. The players are presented with three to four options for each question, one of which is the correct answer.
  • Players will write their answers on a card or paper and show them after the host tells them to reveal them. Whoever gets the correct answer will proceed to the next questions. If not, that player is eliminated. The last person to reach the end wins.

2. Guess the Price

Guess The Price

Can you guess how much a particular wine costs just by tasting it? This wine tasting game will surely challenge how well you perceive wine based on its taste, aromas, notes, and complexities and relate it to its price. After all, some wines taste fantastic and come at a good value.

This game will surprise you how differently priced wines can taste the same or have entirely different characteristics. It can also introduce you to new wines that may be part of your wonderful collection. It is beneficial in picking the best wine that suits your taste and budget.

  • You need an assortment of wines that have drastically different price points. Then, transfer each to separate wine decanters so the players can’t see the labels, bottle shape, or anything that can give them a hint.
  • Have each player sample the wine and let them discuss about it before writing their answers on a piece of paper. To make things more challenging, you can even put blindfolds on the players so they can’t see the color and clarity of the wine and so they would only have to rely on their taste and smell.
  • After the wines are sampled, the host can reveal the answers. Whoever gets the most right answers or has the nearest amount to the correct price wins the game.

3.  Sommify: A Blind Wine Tasting Game

Sommify A Blind Wine Tasting Game

If you want to widen your knowledge about different wines, this game will help you with that! But if you count yourself as a sommelier, this wine tasting game can give you the opportunity to show off your skills. It features 27 bottle shock cards, a Sommify game board, Sommify wine keys, dry-erase markers, pawns, dice, and a rulebook to teach the players the dos and don’ts.

  • The game starts by picking a “somm” among the players. A somm is a person who knows the truth about the wines.
  • At the start of each round, the players use the Sommify method of deductive tasting to guess the grape and country of origin. Afterward, they take turns rolling the dice to advance their pawn on the board.
  • When your pawn lands on a cellar door, you must unlock it by correctly identifying its characteristic, after which the somm will let you pass. If you are incorrect, you will be teleported back to the previous zone.
  • Using the wine key, the cellar doors will help in determining what the mystery wine is. If you land on a question mark slot, you must draw a bottle shot card.
  • At the grape divide, you must decide whether you believe the wine is from the old world or the new world. A different wine is tasted in each round. The winner is announced after all the mystery wines are revealed.

Wine Guessing Games

4. siptionary (wine pictionary).

Siptionary (Wine Pictionary)

One of the more familiar games that perhaps most people know about is Pictionary. If you take the concept of this game and make it all about wine, you got Siptionary! You can choose how many rounds to play and arrange them according to the level of difficulty.

An avid wine fan would have an advantage playing this game, and it’s a chance for budding wine enthusiasts to know more about its processes, types, characteristics, and more. Of course, you can drink wine while playing it!

  • Form teams of two, one being the guesser and the other is the one who draws.
  • The host will write wine-related words or terminology in individual cards. Then, one member in each team will pick one card at a time and try to draw images or figures simultaneously on separate boards that could relate them to the word.
  • The two other members would have to guess what the word is by looking at and analyzing their teammate’s drawings. The team that gets the word right first wins a point.

5. Wine Categories

Wine Categories Game

As the name suggests, this game is about categories with a wine theme. Usually, paper and pens are required for this game to take note of the words written. You can decide how many rounds to play for each category.

Remember that each round for the same category must have different letters; five is a good number. After this, you can move on to the next class, like white wines. Letters may or may not be repeated for each category.

  • Players have to write a table with about five columns on a piece of paper and decide what categories they plan on playing. They could choose wine types like red, white, dessert, rose, and fortified.
  • There must be letters of the alphabet written on a separate paper, and players have to choose one for each round randomly. For example, the letter C was selected for the red wine round. So, players can write a red wine that starts with the letter C, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Chianti.
  • Each round will have a time limit, and one minute should suffice for each letter. Players reveal their answers when the time runs out.
  • If you’re the only one with a correct answer, you will get one point. If you share the same correct answer with any other player, you only get half a point. If your answer is doubtful or wrong, you don’t receive any points.
  • For the next round, choose another letter for the same category, which is red wine. The person who garnered the most points wins the game at the end of the last round.

6.  Master Sommelier Wine Aroma Kit

 Master Sommelier Wine Aroma Kit

You can also enjoy wine by smelling it. After all, what you smell plays a role in how you perceive the taste. Test your wine skills with a game of scents associated with wine, and guess what it is. You can do so with this fantastic Master Sommelier Wine Aroma Kit!

This kit contains a whopping 88 4-ml bottles of different scents from fruits, herbs, and other foods and things that you don’t normally associate with wine like coffee, bacon, butter, and tree moss. It also comes with a wheel booklet, a manual for all the scents, and a map about wine regions, which you can use to play with the included four metal tokens.

How to Play

  • Have the players blindfolded and let them randomly point on the wheel.
  • The host lets the players smell the chosen scent and have them identify what it is. The one who gets the most correct answers will be the victor.

This game is not only fun but also challenges how well you know and value the aroma of your wine before drinking it. While this kit is exceptional and educational, it is pretty pricey. But if you still want to play this game, you can still do so by using real things. You can refer to this wine guessing kit’s list of items and try to accumulate as much as you can and use them instead.

Wine-Opoly Monopoly Board Game

Monopoly is a classic board game with a business theme. If you were to incorporate wine into this strategic game, then you would have Wine-Opoly! You also build properties, but instead of houses and hotels, you can buy wines, collect grapes, and trade them for decanters.

It’s all fun at first until the players add import taxes and serve faux pas. You have to be careful, or else you will be bankrupt and go to jail. But in this version, the prison is a Wine Cellar where you “age.” Also, instead of passing GO, you can pass CHEERS and have opportunities for toasts and drinking wine.

The tokens also follow a wine theme, including a wine bottle, red wine glass , cork, cheese, grapes, and carafe. As you go along the game, you also get to learn about wine facts. And f you have been a good player, maybe you’ll end up becoming a president of a wine club!

This wine board game is suitable for two to six players. If you are already familiar with Monopoly, then it would be easier to play it.

This wine board game requires about one to six players and can run for about 45-90 minutes. In order to win, you have to earn the most victory points by finishing tasks, filling wine orders, and helping visitors. There are also different objectives for different seasons, so you have to strategically allocate your workers to complete the jobs efficiently and move on to the next task.

As the game progresses, you find yourself planting vines, harvesting grapes, making wine, building structures, and completing each visitor’s tasks. These are all done using a game board that depicts a map and over 200 cards.

It’s a more complex game, and perhaps a video tutorial will help you get a clear picture of how to play it. Despite being difficult, it also puts you in a scene where you can be a magnificent winemaker and vineyard owner. No wonder it’s one of the best wine games out there!

Have you ever wanted to host your own wine tasting party? You could just round up a bunch of wines you want to try and make an evening out of it, but that’s only a little bit fun . I want you to have a wine tasting party that’s a lot of fun. So, I decided to compile a list of Wine Tasting Party Games & themes.

So, whether you’re hosting a wine tasting birthday party, bridal shower, anniversary, or just because you want to taste a lot of wine party I’ve got you covered. Here’s my favourite wine tasting party themes and games to inspire your next event.

First of all, it no matter what kind of wine tasting party it is, you should know the order.

Wine Tasting Order

Wine tasting is like a fine meal. You start with light appetizers or hors d’oeuvres and end with dessert. First start with sparkling wines: these are your Champagnes and similar bubbly types. They’re light. So are the white wines like Sauvignon Blanc that you serve next. Moving on, you offer your guests the more bold whites like Chardonnay.

Once the whites are through we compromise with Rosé before moving into the light red wines. Pinot Noir is a good choice here. Logically the bold reds would follow, but this is also where you serve those reds with higher alcohol content like Cabernet. Don’t confuse your bold reds with dessert wines here though. Those come last. Finish the wine tasting with dessert wines like Port.

What Are Some Good Wine Tasting Themes?

wine tour drinking games

There’s a lot of options for how you want to choose the wines for your party. What you decide is going to depend on your budget, the occasion, and how many people are attending. Here’s some of my favourite ideas.

  • By price . You can do something like “only $10 bottles of wine” or have everyone bring a $20 bottle of wine.
  • Traditional vs new. Compare Champagne from the region with your favourite bottle of sparkling wine.
  • Regional . Do you want to just get wines from Napa Valley, France, or Italy? You could also have everyone bring a wine from their home region and compare.
  • Dessert wines . Serve them with dessert, of course.
  • One grape . This is an interesting way to help you better understand the variety of wine. Pick up just one grape variety in multiple price points.
  • Fancy wine. Get the best, the boldest, the most elegant, the lightest – whatever you want to sample – from around the world.
  • Bridal shower. This is a great way for the bride and her wedding party to sample potential wines for the wedding.
  • Wine ‘o clock or Mother’s Day. You know, the typical girls or mom’s night out.
  • Wine and… . Chocolate, cheese, grapes, whatever you want to pair it with. Choose the wine that pairs best with your food of choice. Check out our Delicious and Easy Appetizers for ideas.

If you're planning a tasting party , it's a good idea to come up with a few wine tasting games before the guests arrive. These games help everyone get into the spirit of the event, especially if this is the first time some of the guests have attended such a party.

Hosting a Party

In recent years, wine tasting parties have become extremely popular with both wine connoisseurs and casual enthusiasts. These parties are a great way for everyone to experience new varieties of wine and learn fun facts about the wine varieties they already love. Wine-themed games are the perfect way to break the ice and get the guests involved in the tasting. Some people feel intimidated by the protocol of wine tasting , and games will put everyone at ease.

Blindfolded Wine Challenge

This game is a good choice for beginners, as well as expert wine tasters. Depending on the experience level of the participants, the wine varieties can be radically different or quite similar. For instance, if you're hosting a group of beginning tasters , include sweet white wines, dry white wines , desert wines, dry reds , and rosés . If you're hosting a group of wine experts, limit your choices to one or two varieties from several different vineyards.

Things You'll Need

  • Colorful blindfolds
  • Several bottles of wine
  • Plain adhesive labels
  • Disposable cups
  • Permanent marker
  • List of wines
  • Paper and pencil for each guest
  • Before the guests arrive, apply the blank labels to the wine bottles. Set out several plastic cups for each guest, and apply a label to each cup. Number the wine bottles, and put the corresponding numbers on the cups. Each guest should have a cup for each bottle of wine. Keep the bottles hidden.
  • When you're ready to get started, give each guest a blindfold. Once you make sure no one is peeking, pour the wine into the corresponding cups.
  • Give each guest the first cup, and have him or her taste the wine. Read off a list of the wines the guests are tasting, and have them write down their best guess for the variety.
  • Repeat this process with each bottle. If guests want, they can go back and taste an earlier wine for comparison purposes.
  • When everyone has tasted all the wines, take off the blindfolds and compare notes. The guest who identified the most bottles correctly is the winner of the game.

Aroma Identification Game

One of the most important and often overlooked elements of wine tasting is the aroma of a bottle of wine. You can create a game around this concept by having guests compare some of the scents commonly found in great wine.

  • Opaque paper cups
  • Several sheets of white paper
  • Tobacco leaves
  • Pine needles
  • Plum jam or syrup
  • Fresh blackberries
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Vanilla extract
  • Rose petals
  • For each ingredient, place a small amount in the bottom of a paper cup. Slide a sheet of plain paper over the top to keep it hidden.
  • Invite each guest to put on a blindfold and try to identify the scent that is in the cup.
  • The guest who correctly identifies the most scents is the winner of the game.

Buying Wine Tasting Games

If you'd like to purchase wine tasting games for your next party, you can find a variety of options at online retailers like Amazon.com . The games typically cost between $20 and $60.

Winenerd is a combination tasting and trivia game, so it's perfect for wine tasting parties. Reviewers on Amazon give it 4 out of 5 stars, saying the trivia is tough if you don't no much about wine, but easy if you do. Expect to pay around $25 for the game.

Wineopoly is a great way to pass the time between or after tastings. This board game is essentially Monopoly, but with a wine theme. The game costs around $25.

Wine Wars is another wine trivia board game. While there's no tasting involved, it's a fun game for both wine novices and the more experienced wine geeks. Expect to pay around $20.

Helpful Tips for Your Wine Themed Games

Whether you guy a wine-themed game or make your own game, keep these helpful tips in mind:

  • Tailor the game to the experience level of your guests. Make sure things are tricky but not too overwhelming.
  • Offer prizes for the winners of the games. Some great options include a bottle of wine, a wine opener, or a book on wine.
  • Have fun! There's no sense in getting too serious about wine games, so make no one gets too caught up in the competition.

Have a Fun Wine Tasting

Games can make your wine tasting party even more enjoyable. Whether you have wine-themed games, wine tasting games, or just sit down and enjoy a hearty bout of Jenga, adding games is sure to up the fun.

5 Fun Wine Tasting Games

by JJ Buckley Fine Wines

Group of people gathered around a table with flights of wine

Wine tasting parties introduce your palate to exciting new wines. You don’t need to make it a solemn affair, though. Invite your friends to a party complete with fun games where you can taste wines, test your knowledge, keep it casual, and share plenty of laughter. Here are five fun wine tasting games to enjoy at your next event.

1. Wine Bingo

Wine bingo is a modern take on a classic. Just like with bingo, you have a board for each player and tokens for advancing the game. Unlike bingo, however, the boards don't contain numbered squares. Each square in wine bingo contains the name of a wine or wine cocktail.

For example, you might have a board full of varietals like Beaujolais, Riesling, Sangiovese, and Malbec. You could also decide to challenge your guests by adding in lesser-known varietals, or you could use blended wines like Bordeaux, Burgundy, Port, or Rioja. If you’d like to introduce alternatives, try adding in wine cocktails like Bellini, Sangria, or Kir.

There are two ways to play wine bingo. One is the traditional method, in which a caller pulls random wine names out of a container, and you use your tokens to mark the wine names on your board. The first person to complete a row is the winner.

The second way takes longer, but it leads to sampling the wines. Here, you set out a flight of wines and wine cocktails for each player, ensuring all wines you set out also appear on the bingo board. The caller tells players to grab a random wine, sample it, and put a token on the square they believe matches.

The game continues until someone yells "bingo." To be the winner, the player must have guessed correctly. You can choose the threshold for how many correct guesses a winner needs to make.

2. Wine Trivia

Combine trivia and wine and see which of your guests is the top oenophile. You’ll need to collect trivia and fun facts from across the internet and add them to facts you already know. Once you’ve gathered enough, split the trivia into question types such as true/false, multiple choice, and general Q&A.

To make the game lively and encourage discussion, put players in teams of at least three people. You can give each team a buzzer for rapid-fire answers, or you can simply ask teams to write their answers on a sheet of paper.

At the end of the game, tally up the correct answers and award first prize to the team with the highest score.

3. Counting Corks

Here’s a game that doesn’t require the wine—just the corks. This is perfect for those who enjoy wine on a regular basis, but it definitely requires some planning. Whenever you finish a bottle, keep the cork, and ask your friends to do the same.

On the day of your event, ask your guests to bring all of the corks they’ve saved. Count them up and place them into a large glass jar. Bring it out to your guests and allow them to inspect it and make their guesses as to how many corks are inside. At the end of the night, reveal the real number and compare it to everyone’s guesses. Whoever is closest to the actual number wins the game.

4. Wine Options

This wine game is wildly popular in Australia and New Zealand. It debuted in 1968, with credit for its creation going to winemaker and columnist Len Evans. Wine Options is a live-play guessing game, where you start with broad questions and narrow in on the specifics to reveal the identity of a flight of wines.

The game starts with a flight of wines set before each player. Each person samples the first wine, paying particular attention to characteristics, aroma, and taste. Then everyone stands up and listens to the speaker ask a question. Typically, each question comes in a “this or that” format, such as, “Is this wine French or Argentinean?” Sometimes, each question may have as many as three options.

Broader questions focus on the country or region, before moving on to the varietal. The final questions are more specific and typically focus on the producer and the vintage.

Players have a tally board before them on which they mark their answer to each question. Those who do not get the question correct must sit down. The last player or players standing for that particular wine win that round.

Everyone stands up again once the game moves on to the next mystery wine. There is no limit on the number of mystery wines to sample nor is there a rule on how many correct rounds lead to the overall winner. You could play for best two out of three or three out of five, for example.

5. Guess the Price

Another fun wine tasting game to try out is based on prices. Guess the Price encourages guests to use their budding or expert wine skills to determine how much an unknown wine costs.

To play, ask each of your guests to bring one to two bottles of wine from random price points. If you want to use themes, ask them to focus on wines from one region or varietal. Make sure they tell you the cost of the bottles they've brought

Once you have all your guests' bottles before you, open them and pour them into separate decanters to hide the labels and bottle shapes. Moving from wine to wine, have your guests pour a small sample and taste it. Let them write their price guesses on a chalkboard or white board, revealing all of the correct prices at the end.

Alternatively, you can have guests keep their guesses to themselves by recording answers on their own sheets. However you choose to reveal the real prices, make sure you keep the game lighthearted and casual.

A young woman stands in her pink kitchen and drinks a glass of wine.

Your new after-work routine come Friday may consist of tracking down your corkscrew and opening a bottle of wine. From there, you open your laptop, call a bestie up, and chat for hours while sipping a glass of bitter Pinot Grigio or flavorful and bold cabernet. It's a plan you've come to love because you get to chat with your BFFs and ask them about their days. But you always wish you knew of some virtual wine games to play with the fellow grape lovers in your friend group.

It's not like conversation stalls or there are a ton of awkward silences. You'd like to switch things up rather than recall the meetings you had for work that day, or the meals you're prepping for the week later on. Sometimes, you don't have anything "new" to report, either, concerning your crush, or the new roommate who's moving into your apartment next week. You'd like to make some new memories instead. That's why virtual wine games actually exist.

You don't need to pinch yourself and see if you're dreaming. This is real life. These eight wine games will make your grape-loving pals smile and laugh, and really excited to schedule more virtual happy hours with you. Play them the next time you log onto FaceTime or Zoom. (A glass of wine isn't always #necessary, but could be a fine touch.)

A young woman lays in bed and video chats her friends on her laptop while drinking red wine.

First up, play "Wine Not?" and see how willing your pals are to go outside of their comfort zone. In this game, you make a list of adventurous and spontaneous things someone may do, like going skydiving , quitting their job and moving to an island, or asking someone out from high school. Everyone in your crew has to say if they would do or not, and explain why.

How well do you and your pals know your wine? Do you know what regions certain bottles come from, or the proper way to smell the notes in a glass of red? "Totally In Love With Wine Trivia" will put your knowledge to the test and see who is the real conossieur among your crew. It may even inspire you to take an online wine class together.

If you and your BFFs were together and able to, you'd totally be going to a winery and trying the season's flavors. Don't feel too discouraged, though, because "Virtual Tasting Room" exists and will let you tour wineries all over the world from home. Simply have everyone pour themselves a taste of four different glasses of wine.

Take sips at the same time, and then write down your ratings and what you notice most about them. Share your findings so your friends know what to pick up the next time they shop for wine.

A young woman pours wine into a glass from a large bottle, while wearing bright blue headphones.

Have you ever played "Spin The Wine Bottle"? It works pretty similarly to "Spin The Bottle," except one person takes charge. They lay out slips of paper with everyone in your crew's name on them in a circle, and then spin an empty wine bottle. When the bottle stops and chooses a name, that person has to tell an embarassing story, spill some tea, or complete a dare. They get to choose.

Full disclosure: If you play "Two Partners In Wine," you will take a walk down Nostalgia Lane. That's because this game requires you and your BFF to go back into your camera roll and see who can find a picture of particular adventures you've had together first.

For instance, maybe you two studied abroad in Florence at the same time. On the count of three, go to your camera rolls and see who can find a picture of that adventure. Send it in a text to claim your crown.

True wine lovers have a lot of wine-related items at home, like corkscrews, used corks, and a sign with a wine pun. Distribute a list of these items to your grape-loving pals before a virtual happy hour, and then hunt for them all while you're chatting and catching up. See who can get the most items on the hunt, and drink some wine to celerbate their victory.

A young couple laughs in their kitchen while clinking their glasses of red wine.

Most of us have a celebrity crush we'd love to share a glass of wine with. "You're The Wine That I Want" exposes who these are by having every person in your group go around and describe their perfect wine-related date. Their crush must be included, and they get extra points if the date takes place at a winery or somewhere luxurious in a wine-loving country like Italy.

Lastly, play "Say Cheese" with your fellow grape lovers to really commemorate the memories you've made during your virtual happy hour, and to wrap up your sweet sesh. This game is so quick and easy, and requires everyone to pose in the camera with their glass of wine and a piece of cheese. Afterwards, in your group chat or on FaceTime or Zoom, everyone can take their best guess as to what type wine and cheese everyone is enjoying.

Viticulture: Essential Edition

Viticulture Essential Edition Board Game Box and Components

Players: 1-6 Playing time: 45-90mins

If you’ve had a lifelong dream of owning a winery, Viticulture is for you.

Picture yourself in rustic, pre-modern Tuscany. Beautiful rolling hills and sunny skies make for the perfect wine. Luckily, you have inherited a vineyard! It may be a little drab with only a few workers and tools, but with a dream and the potential to have wine every night, you can build your winery to success!

Viticulture: Essential Edition is an economic worker placement and tableau-building game in which you assign tasks to workers and helpful visitors. Worker placement is important to Viticulture and brings in a little strategy to the wine world.

Expand your wine farm by building structures, planting vines, and fulfilling wine orders. Become the most successful winery in Tuscany. After all, ‘wine’ is just ‘win’ with an ‘e’.

Viticulture: Essential Edition

Players: 2-6 Playing time: 45mins

Test your knowledge with this amazing trivia game all about the wonders of wine. With categories such as ‘Vine to Vino’, ‘Wine Cellar’ and ‘Cork Culture’, there’s always something new to learn about wine.

Battles begin when players answer questions. Questions vary from the process of growing grapes to the production phase, storing wine to the business side of making wine.

An intimate game to play with a few friends , Vinhos is a trading and economic game about winemaking. ‘Vinhos’ is the Portuguese word for ‘wine’ and takes place in Portugal.

The object of the game is to produce the best quality wine that can be exchanged for money or victory points. Winemakers have 6 years of harvests to cultivate their wines and choose the best varieties. Will you go with a blend or a traditional Portuguese port?

Although the viticulture theme is similar, Vinhos has a refreshing take on mechanics that focuses on action selection over worker placement.

Feel like adding another dynamic to the game?

Why not have players bring their own bottle of Portuguese wine and have a little tasting while playing? Strategy is needed and players are rewarded if they stick to their original plans… so be careful of the damn-fine Portuguese wine!

Vino is an area-control board game in which players acquire vineyards in 9 regions of Italy. The player with the most vineyards wins.

It’s a great viticulture game as it gives you a lot of independence with choices. When you first buy a vineyard, you choose which type of grapes to grow. You also have a choice of the price of your wine when selling, bringing an economic strategy to Vino.

If you’re going to be a nerd, be a wine nerd.

Winerd is a wine-tasting game that blends a passion for wine with playing games with friends. It was developed to educate players on wine while playing a board game.

Winerd flawlessly incorporates wine tasting into gameplay. It’s also flexible with how much wine is consumed. You can drink as little or as much wine as you like, depending on players’ preferences.

To start, you’ll need 3 different bottles of red or white. Each team/player takes turns tasting the wine and takes notes of aroma, and color as well as information about the region, year, and name. This can be quite tricky, so teaming up with an amateur sommelier is a great strategic move.

Each turn, players/teams move along the spaces answering trivia or picking up bonus/ challenge cards. Around the board are the 4 blind taste tests. Wine is secretly poured and the player must guess the wine, grape, region, and country. With each correct answer, you can move a space.

A delicious grape blend of trivia and tasting!

Players: 2- 6 Playing time: 60mins

Wine-Opoly is a refreshing, wine-themed take on the classic game of Monopoly .

Moving around the board, players buy the finest wines, collect bunches of grapes and trade them for decanters. Becoming a monopolist of wine may seem easy but the world of wine can be risky. Import taxes, faux pas, and a trip to the wine cellar to ‘age’ all make it a little more difficult and a lot more fun.

With a little strategy, who knows? You may be selected as the elite Wine Club president. Or things may take a turn if you serve malodorous cheese. Keep your wits about you as well as your most coveted wines.

Cards also contain fun facts and descriptors about wine so you can learn a thing or two while you crush your friends like grapes for wine.

Choose your token, whether it be cheese, a carafe, wine bottle, or grapes, and proceed to Cheers!

1. Buzz Drinking Game

Buzz is a game that seems easy to play at first, but don’t be fooled - it’s a game that ramps up the difficulty as you dive in. The game starts off simple: players take turns counting from one, but here’s the twist – certain numbers get swapped out for the word “buzz.” And when someone slips up and forgets to buzz in when they should, drinks are in order!

How to Play Buzz Drinking Game

Buzz is a fast-paced game that becomes more challenging as the game goes on. To start playing Buzz, the youngest player or whoever the group decides to be the starting player will start the count and say “one”. The player to their left continues the count by declaring “two,” and so on. The game continues until someone slips up and fails to call out “buzz” when they should.

Here are some examples of rules when you can replace numbers with the word “buzz”:

  • Numbers with a 7 in it (7, 17, 27…)
  • Multiples of 7 (7, 14, 21…)
  • Double-digit repeating numbers (11, 22, 33…)

When someone messes up a buzz, everyone drinks!

2. Beer Pong Beirut

When it comes to fun party drinking games, you can never go wrong with a game of Beer Pong Beirut. Whether you’re a player or a spectator, people competing to shoot ping pong balls into red solo cups half-filled with beer is exciting!

How to Play Beer Pong Beirut

As its name implies, Beer Pong is played similarly to a regular ping pong game. However, you don’t need a table tennis table or paddle to play! In Beer Pong, players must face each other with a table in between them. Each side of the table table will have 6 cups of beer placed which should be arranged in a triangle (3-2-1) formation.

Players take turns throwing a ping pong ball across the table and trying to shoot the ball into one of their opponent’s beer-filled cups. Once a player successfully shoots a ping pong ball into a cup, their opponent has to drink the cup where the ball landed, and that cup gets taken off the table.

The first player to successfully hit all of their opponent’s cups wins the game! The losing player must drink the remaining cups.

3. Kings Cup

Playing card games is another fun activity you can do, whether you have a party with a huge group or just a casual hangout with friends. Also known as Circle of Death , Kings Cup is a drinking game where players draw cards and must perform the action associated with a card they picked.

Tip: Playing Kings Cup is even more fun when the cards are waterproof. No more ruined games or soggy house rules! Check out this waterproof card deck on Amazon:

How to Play Kings Cup

Place the cards face down in the center of the table and let each player take turns drawing a card from the deck. Your cards can surround a mug/glass of beer, which would be your Kings Cup. Players then take turns picking a card and doing the action assigned to that particular card.

What makes Kings Cup so much fun are the rules/actions players need to follow whenever they pick a card.

For example: Whoever picks a King card can pour additional drinks into the King’s Cup. The player who draws the 4th King card will have to drink the entire Kings Cup with all sorts of booze in it!

7. Jenga as a Drinking Game

If you’re familiar with the game Jenga where players build a tower by stacking wooden blocks or “stones” and are willing to drink alcohol, then you’re ready to play Jenga as a drinking game. Just like in regular Jenga, players will still need excellent hand-eye coordination and mental skills to ensure that the tower doesn’t fall.

The only difference is that there are additional rules where players need to drink while playing, which makes the game more unpredictable!

wine tour drinking games

How to Play Jenga as a Drinking Game

In Jenga as a drinking game, the rules follow the same structure as the traditional game of Jenga, but with an added twist involving drinks. Before starting the game, you need to label the wooden blocks with actions and drinking rules. Then, you set up the tower as you would for a regular game.

Take turns removing one block at a time from the Jenga tower. When it is your turn, you have to read the instruction written on the block that you chose and follow the rule. For example, a block might say, “drink two sips”.

Once you finish following the instruction, place the block back at the top of the tower. The game goes on until the tower collapses.

The one who has caused the tower to fall loses the game and must drink!

9. Yahtzee as a Drinking Game

Yahtzee is a popular dice-rolling game that you can easily turn into a drinking game. What players need to do is to get the most number of points by rolling different dice combinations with five dice.

A Yahtzee occurs when a player scores five dice of the same value. When this happens, the player should yell, “Yahtzee!”

wine tour drinking games

How to Play Yahtzee

When playing Yahtzee , players can roll the dice up to 3 times. After the first and second rolls, a player must decide which dice to keep, if any, and roll the dice not kept. After the third roll, the player must choose a box to score on the scorecard.

Once the player finishes their turn by writing something on the scorecard, their opponent takes a turn. This continues until both players fill all 13 boxes on their scorecard. After which, the final tally can be made. The player with the highest score wins the game!

If you’re playing Yahtzee as a drinking game, the mechanics are the same as when you would play regular Yahtzee except with some additional dice rules that will make people drink!

For example: When players roll a “one”, they must take a drink.

11. Bite the Bag

Bite the Bag is another party-drinking game on this list! The main mechanics of this game are based on its name, meaning for this game players will have to go around biting a bag! Sounds fun!

How to Play Bite the Bag

Put an empty brown paper bag on the floor and have the players form a circle around it. Without letting anything except their feet touch the floor, players take turns bending down and biting the bag, only using their mouths and not their hands.

After all the players have bitten the bag at least once, it’s time for round two! Cut one inch off the top of the bag, and all the players bite the bag again. This goes on until there is nothing left of the bag.

The lower the paper bag gets, the harder it will be for players to go down and bite it while not using their hands. If a player fails to pick up the bag with their mouth and bite it, they must take a drink and start the game over!

12. The Alphabet Game

The Alphabet Game is a fun game that makes you think while drinking. This game mainly involves choosing a category or theme and players taking turns giving words that start with every letter of the alphabet. Of course, the game becomes much funnier when drunk people scramble to think of words!

How to Play the Alphabet Game

In this fun drinking game, each player recites words that begin with each letter of the alphabet. However, with a twist—all the words must be related to a specific theme or category.

For example: If the theme is “movie”. The first person could say “A Quiet Place”, the second person could say “Back to the Future”, and the third person could say “Captain America: Civil War”.

This goes on until there is a player who can’t give a related term; then, they must take a drink. The game then starts over with a new theme or category.

13. Medusa Game

You’ll need to prepare some shots beforehand when you play Medusa. This is a fun drinking game where people who lock eyes with each other need to shout “Medusa” and drink!

wine tour drinking games

How to Play Medusa

Each player begins the game with their head on the table or with their eyes closed. One player initiates the countdown by starting at “3” and counting backward: “3, 2, 1.”

After the countdown, all players simultaneously look up and make eye contact with another player. If a player locks eyes with another player who is also looking at them, both players must shout “Medusa!” and take a shot of alcohol. However, if a player does not have anyone looking at them, they can skip taking the shot.

Once everyone has taken shots, the players repeat the same process, and the game continues until all the shots are gone.

15. Drinking Game “21”

The 21 drinking game is a simple party drinking game that you can play at once without any additional setup. All you need are players and your drink of choice. It is a counting game where players need to count from 1 to 21, and the player who calls out “21” must drink before the next round starts!

How to Play 21

First, gather the players and make sure that you have enough alcohol for several rounds. The players must sit in a circle, and everyone should be able to look into each other’s eyes. The more players, the better!

Next, the youngest player starts to count. All the players should count aloud in a clockwise direction from 1 to 21. Every player says one number, and the player who says the number 21 drinks and makes up a rule that can be added to the next round.

For example: When players reach 3, they need to clap their hands three times instead of calling out the number.

If they don’t follow this rule, they must drink, and the count starts over.

Stonemaier’s viticulture essential edition.

wine tour drinking games

Thousands of people can’t get enough of one of America’s favorite wine board games, and we’re here to join the fun.

You’ve just inherited a vineyard in Tuscany. It’s a paltry estate, but you have a chance to make something of it! Stonemaier’s Viticulture Essential Edition board game gives you and up to 6 players an opportunity to create the best winery in Italy!

Here’s the game in a nutshell:

“You’ll have a few plots of land, an old crush pad, a tiny cellar, and 3 workers.Your job is to allocate your workers and helpful visitors to complete various tasks throughout the year.

“Each season is different on a vineyard, so the workers have different tasks they can take care of in the summer and winter. There’s competition over those tasks, and often the first worker to arrive at each one has an advantage over the rest.

“Using those workers and visitors, you can expand your vineyard by building structures, planting vines, and filling wine orders as you work towards the goal of owning the most successful winery in Tuscany.”

Take note that this latest edition comes with some elements of the Tuscany Essential Edition expansion pack, including 36 Mama & Papa cards, Field cards (previously known as “Properties”), expanded/revised Visitors, and 24 Automa cards (solo variant), along with a couple of minor rule changes.

Even so, you may want to go ahead and purchase the full Tuscany expansion game. The Tuscany expansion makes the game a little more complicated and longer playing.

The Viticulture Essential Edition takes about 45 minutes to 90 minutes to complete.   Many players agree that the Viticulture Essential provides more than enough fun and challenge for a night of wine board games!

Wine pairings for Viticulture Essential

Undoubtedly, Tuscany is one of the most rewarding places to visit in Europe. With its capital in Florence, Tuscany is home to some of the world’s most famous Renaissance art: Michelangelo’s David statue and Botticelli’s works like The Birth of Venus and Primavera.

Tuscany’s vast natural landscape features miles of Tyrrhenian coastline, fields of sunflowers, olive groves, and vineyards and the Apennine Mountains, which protect some of the most intact ecosystems in all of Europe.

From Tuscany’s rugged natural beauty comes some of the best known wines in the world. The Sangiovese grape accounts for most all plantings in Tuscany and accounts for more than 85% of the red wines, for which this region is best known.

A Chianti is the best place to start for wine pairings from Tuscany with your wine board games, especially one set in Tuscany! Our two picks pair well with hard cheeses.

Mazzei Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo 2016

Grapes: 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot

Cranberry, raspberry, and red cherry dominate with hints of leather, cedar, and cocoa powder. Some earthiness in the finish and ripe soft tannins. On game night, consider pairing with a slightly aged cheddar.

Vinhos Deluxe strategy board game

For those who love wine board games, Vinhos (Portuguese for wine) is well known. The game tests your skills at the trade and economics of wine making. The deluxe edition is updated with new art and components as well as improved and simplified rules of the original game.

Over a period of six harvests, you will cultivate your vines, choose the best varieties, hire the best oenologists, take part in trade fairs, and show your opponents you are the best winemaker in the game. As winemakers in Portugal, the players develop their vineyards and produce wine to achieve maximum profit.

Among wine board games, Stonemaier’s Viticulture Essential Edition is labeled a worker placement game, whereas Vinhos is action selection.

You can watch a long, in-depth video review of the game with excellent instructions.

Wine pairings for Vinhos board game

I have a favorable bias toward Portuguese wines. As a history buff, the stories of ancient Portuguese vineyards capture my imagination. You can read more about my fascination with Portugal in this story about a tour of 9 remarkable Marian Shrines in northern Portugal.

Sampling a few bottles from the Vinho Verde region of northern Portugal may help you imagine the mountains that spill into the Atlantic to create a breathtaking coastline or the medieval towns and vineyards dotting the lush countryside as you play wine board games.

The vineyards here are known for green wines with a slightly fizzy nature. But if you prefer to stick with Portugal’s most famous wines, then you’ll need to select a port. Portugal is one of the world’s leading producers of wine, so opportunities abound to try a bottle no matter where you are located.

Wine-Opoly Monopoly Board Game

A favorite among wine board games, Wine-opoly is just like the traditional game of Monopoly . Instead of real estate transactions, you are dealing in wine. The game is for two to six players, and you can choose between traditional length play time or a one-hour version.

This is not a game where you’ll learn much about wine, but the cards do feature some wine information. Although this is not a wine tasting game, some players have added to the rules so that drinking wine becomes part of the game.

Wine pairings for Wine-Opoly

Given that Wine-opoly is one of the traditional wine board games, let’s stick with the basics and pick out reliable white and red wines at under $20 with a focus on Oregon wines. Let’s just say the “O” in Wine-Opoly inspired me!

Chardonnay Go wine board game

Touted as one of the best wine board games for a girl’s night, Chardonnay Go is decidedly an adult game.

As you make your way through the vineyard to the tasting room, you might land on spaces like, “You sound like your mother, Move Back 1,” or “You think sweatpants are dressy, Move Back 2.” Those are the PG versions of the cards.

As you move around the board, you will also draw challenge performance cards, such as “While dancing and stradling your chair, look alluringly to the person on your left.”

Although wine is not required to play, it might help one tackle some of the challenges to perform!

“The game is silly- but really fun and me and my girls could spend all night playing but we really love drinking TOO much so we get drunk really fast!” wrote one reviewer.

Wine pairings for Chardonnay Go

Made from a grape variety that originated from Burgundy, France, the green-skinned Chardonnay grape is grown across the world. You can find Chardonnay across the spectrum of prices and in numerous styles of wine.

“Chardonnay is one of the leading white grape varieties in the world for production of high-quality white and sparkling table wines, due to its versatility in producing different wine styles,” according to the Cooperative Extension of the USDA .

In 2019, the Chardonnay grape covered the most acreage of any white wine grapes grown in California, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture .

Let’s start in California with our wine board games top picks for Chardonnay Go and move across to the eastern United States.

Gundlach Bundschu Chardonnay 2018

From California’s oldest family-owned winery, the Gundlach Bundschu Chardonnay is crafted with food in mind with minimal new oak influences. The result is a balanced, bright wine full of juicy white nectarine and key lime layers.

The winery recommends the following cheese pairings: mild cheddar, Brie, Havarti, Provolone.

4 of the top wine board games that include tasting

Typically, when planning a wine tasting event, you start by figuring out a theme. It can be as random as having everyone bring a bottle. You can focus on a wine region or wine style or just base it off the price point of wines.

Wine tasting games are another way to set your theme. These wine board games are a fun way to learn and test your wine knowledge.

Sommify: A blind wine tasting game

Game creators Conner and Jessica Taylor got the idea for the Sommify game when Connor was studying for his sommelier exam and his level 3 WSET certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.

What is a WSET certification? As a professional or enthusiast, you can receive three levels of certification in wine, spirits, or sake that are recognized globally.

“For individuals seeking to delve deeper into the world of wines, this qualification provides a detailed understanding of grape growing and wine making.

Upon completion you will be able to assess wines accurately, and use your understanding to confidently explain wine style and quality,” according to the WSET organization .

The Taylors thought the traditional way of studying wine tasting – joining a group – was rather stuffy. Instead, they developed a game that could be more like a fun friends night.

The game Sommify uses the same classic wines used in the blind tasting portions of the exams. They say it’s like accidentally studying for your Somm exam.

What’s in the box

  • Sommify Game Board
  • 27 Bottle Shock Cards – A chance for good luck or misfourtune
  • 6 Sommify Wine Keys – Each players guide and tool to deducing what each wine is
  • 6 Dry-Erase Markers – To keep track of your tasting notes
  • 6 Pawns – You know to mark your place on the board
  • 2 Dice – Gotta move somehow

From Vines to Wines tasting and trivia game

From Vines to Wines incorporates trivia into a wine tasting game that is meant to be fun and a little educational. You will need 4 to 6 bottles of wine to play.

The game creator took extra steps to make the board game itself appealing and the wine information accurate. The game was carefully researched by well-traveled wine tasters, and the main art of the game is based on an artist-commissioned oil painting.

What’s the premise of the game? Open 4-6 bottles, roll the die, move your cork from vineyard, harvest, crushing, clarification, bottling, and tasting. Along the way, answer trivia questions and taste test with each move.

Winerd trivia and blind tasting wine board game

Creator Tamara Leigh Murphy paired wine trivia questions, which can be difficult for those without wine knowledge, with a blind tasting wine board game that has been featured on the Today Show and on the Wine Spectator Gift Guide.

It’s one of those games you might want to keep a while and then pass on to friends or family. The trivia questions can get repetitive for someone who knows a lot about wine. But, on the other hand, it’s a fun way to get people interested in learning more about wine.

Winerd comes with 300 Q&A cards, 12 bonus/challenge cards, and a notebook for tasting notes. The playing pieces are synthetic cork, which you can swap out with your own wine corks.

Margaret, who purchased and reviewed the game, says, “This game is great for drinking and having fun. You can drink a little or a lot of wine as you play it. It is actually rather hard trivia if you don’t know anything about wine, but if you know something it’s pretty easy.”

Master Sommelier Wine Aroma Kit

The Master Sommelier Wine Aroma Kit is big league material. This “game” is not something you buy for a boozy night with friends, and not to mention, it is expensive and not always available.

I’ll let the expert reviewers speak for the kit, which comes with 88 aromas found in sweet, red, white, and sparkling wines.

“Wine aromas found in Aromaster are high quality, well selected and true to the esters found in wine,” says Debra Meiburg, master of wine, wine professor, wine journalist, and international wine competition judge .

“The playful approach of Aromaster makes it a fun educational kit. It is an exceptional quality tool for anyone looking to sharpen their wine tasting skills.”

Yohann Jousselin, MS, Shangri-La Hotel Chief Sommelier : “The Master Wine Aroma Kit of Aromaster is a great educational tool for any wine lovers. The kit is very complete with its selection of 88 wine aromas, the manual, the wine aroma wheel, the game… Everything is very well thought out. Well done!!!”

Roberto Garrone, Best European Sommelier 2005 : “Finally a qualitative wine aroma kit that offers a wide selection of realistic wine scents. The Aromaster is an excellent tool for wine lovers, who wish to train their nose and a great gift for the whole family with its board game.”

Shinya Tazaki, World Best Sommelier 1995, president of the International Sommelier Association : “Out of five human senses, the most unused one is the sense of smell. This sense can be enhanced with education. I recommend the Master Wine Aroma collection created by Aromaster, which is a perfect training tool for identifying aromas in wine.”

Food pairings for wine board games

From charcuterie boards to chocolate, selecting appropriate foods is an important part of wine pairings, and not to mention, food keeps the fun going at any party where you are playing wine board games!

If you’re on social media at all, then you know that millennials became obsessed with charcuterie. Arranging a charcuterie board has been elevated to an art form!

Although we’ll leave the artwork to you, we have recommendations for the best cheese selections and charcuterie tools and platters.

4 top charcuterie platters for wine board games night

The Smirly wooden charcuterie platter is one of most impressive and affordable on the market. The premium board comes with 3 drawers and five sections.

The cheese board set comes with 4 stainless steel knives, 2 ceramic sauce bowls, 2 white markers, 2 black slate labels, 4 small forks, 1 wine opener, and a cheeseboard guide.

Cheese and wine pairings

We can learn from the many experts who have experimented and found perfect or interesting wine and cheese pairings. I’ve paired two of my family’s favorite cheeses – which just so happen to be some of the best types of cheese for wine pairings on a night when you’re playing wine board games!

I’ll start with aged cheddar because it tends to be an all-around favorite for most people.

As cheddar ages, it goes from a creamy mild cheese to a tangier cheese with crumbling texture with hard, salt-like crystals. A mild cheddar is aged 2 to 3 months, sharp is aged 6 to 9 months, and extra sharp is aged 15 months or longer.

The most commonly recommended wine pair for aged cheddar is a Cabernet Sauvignon . Our recommendation comes from the Maipo Valley in Chile. Wine Spectator gave the affordably priced wine a 91 point rating, describing it as:

“Lithe, featuring focused cherry, currant and plum flavors, flanked by accents of white pepper. Minerally midpalate, offering a finish filled with freshly crushed green herbal notes. Drink now through 2024.”

A Sauvignon Blanc is the go-to pairing for goat cheese because the two together are refreshing. The citrus notes and minerals in a Sauvignon Blanc interact with the rather bland acidity in goat cheese to bring out an invigorating taste.

For a change of pace, try pairing chèvre with a Chenin Blanc from the Anjou region of France or South Africa , which has double the acreage planted with the Chenin Blanc grape as compared to France.

Best picks for chocolate for wine pairings & wine board games

Milk chocolate is often the easiest to pair with wines. Dark chocolate can heighten the sense of bitterness in some wines. However, with careful selection, we can use both milk and dark chocolate to pair with wines.

Milk chocolate wine pairings

Let’s start with my favorite chocolate for wine pairings – Godiva milk chocolate in boxed sets , bars , or truffles . Other fine milk chocolate brands include:

  • Baci Italian chocolate
  • Lindt Swiss c hocolate
  • Belgium shells and seahorses from Guylian

Some of the best wine pairings for milk chocolate are Pinot Noir, Riesling, dessert wines, Ruby Port, or even a sparkling wine. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Flowers Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2018 (California)
  • Ferreira Ruby Port (Portugal)
  • Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc – Viognier 2020 (California)
  • Chambers Rosewood Rutherglen Grand Muscat (Australia)
  • Graham Beck Bliss Demi Sec (South Africa)

Dark chocolate wine pairings

Have you noticed that in the world of chocolate that people tend to side up for either dark or milk chocolate? Then there’s some people who absolutely do not like their chocolate to be mixed with anything else, such as mint. For me, however, I’ll take chocolate in most varieties!

The days of shunning dark chocolate are over. Choices abound for wine pairings with dark chocolate.

Let’s start first with a few recommendations for dark chocolate. Of course, you know by now that I love Godiva , but I recognize and try many other fine dark chocolate brands.

  • Godiva dark chocolate gift box
  • Brix dark chocolate bars in a variety gift box. Brix is a favorite for wine tasting parties.
  • Green & Blacks organic dark chocolate bars.
  • 24 pieces of Ethel dark chocolate creations in a gift box.
  • Another wine pairing favorite – Neuhaus Belgium dark chocolate praline assortment.

Our recommendations for wine pairings with dark chocolate include a variety of price points from outstanding, well-reviewed wines from Sonoma County, California; Rapel Valley, Chile; and Australia.

  • Decoy Merlot 2018  (California)
  • Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Merlot 2015 (Chile)
  • Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 (California)
  • Grgich Hills Estate Zinfandel 2014 (California)
  • Henschke Hill of Grace Shiraz 2015 (Australia) *Expensive*

Chocolate and wine pairings gift sets

Wine and food sets can take the guesswork out of pairings and make for beautiful gifts for any wine lover.

For a wine tasting party, it’s difficult to beat the pairing of Brix chocolate wine pairing chocolate set and bottles of a 2018 Head High Sonoma County Pinot Noir and a 2016 Chateau Peymouton.

Other excellent chocolate and wine pairings sets include (in order of price points low to high):

  • Luc Belaire Luxe and 8-piece assorted Godiva chocolates
  • 2018 Baileyana Firepeak Pinot Noir and Godiva truffles
  • Dom Perignon and 8-piece Godiva Gift Set
  • Dom Perignon and 36-piece Godiva Gift Set

How to decorate for a wine board games night

In our household, we like to add a little flair with temporary decor, even sometimes for a family night! Decorations add festivity and help set the tone for your get-together.

  • Champagne Bottle Balloon Kit
  • Wine Time Banner
  • Hanging wine party swirls in a set of 40
  • Photo booth props for wine tasting party
  • Burlap bags for blind wine tasting party

Puzzles for wine lovers

As an alternative to wine board games, sometimes we just want a nice, quiet time alone or with loved ones. Puzzles are a great way to unwind with a glass of wine and just let the world slow down around you.

Something to keep in mind: Puzzles vary in quality of the pieces and difficulty. It’s always best to read the reviews.

For example, my favorite wine puzzle “scene” is made by the Vermont Christmas Company, which is a store I love. Their puzzle called Wine Country gets a great overall review score.

I love the puzzle because I can imagine myself in the scene, and it is so relaxing. But the first thing I did was to read all of the recent reviews.

We read through all the reviews of wine puzzles and came up with 2 great choices with the highest overall rating from reviewers.

For the Love of Wine

Two for the price of one! Each puzzle is 1,000 pieces. It comes in 1 box, but each puzzle, measuring 20 x 27 inches, is separately bagged. One puzzle shows an array of wine bottles and the other shows wine labels. Both were designed by Charlie Girard and made in the USA.

Shaped puzzle set

Shaped puzzles offer a little something out of the ordinary. The 500-piece set includes two uniquely shaped puzzles: a beautiful bouquet of pink roses and a glass and bottle of rosé wine. Each puzzle is bagged separately. Wine pairing: Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas Rose 2019

By this point, you probably feel as though you’ve been on the Grand Tour of wine board games!

We understand that game night for wine lovers includes more than just the wine board games. There’s a whole production that surrounds the preparation and execution of just the right game night or wine tasting.

We’ve tried to run the gamut of the top reviewed wine board games so that we could capture the best picks for those who seek a sophisticated gathering all the way to those of you who just want to have some fun with friends and family.

Raising a Glass to Our Journey: Celebrating Just Wine

Thank you for being an integral part of our journey.

Dear JustWine Community,

Nine years ago, in December 2014, we embarked on an adventurous journey with JustWine. Our ambition was clear and compelling: we sought to disrupt the wine industry, to grant wineries the visibility they deserved at a local level, and to create a platform where technology, marketing, and product development could harmonize to celebrate our love for wine, sharing that passion with others.

Throughout the years, JustWine has achieved incredible milestones that exceeded our wildest dreams. We’ve had the honor of serving wine news and highlights to over 1.2 million users, curating more than 1,300 wine articles, hosting records of over 38,000 wines, and showcasing over 2,500 wineries. Our partnerships have reached thousands of brands, ensuring that we brought you the latest in wine culture, business, and trends.

JustWine was built on a foundation of experimentation and learning, testing our assumptions and ideas about the wine industry. While we’ve seen tremendous growth in some areas, others have not blossomed as we anticipated. We discovered that some parts of our platform have become static and lack the invigoration necessary to continue delivering a premium product that epitomizes our best offerings.

Moreover, we have acknowledged a significant shift in consumer trends and consciousness surrounding drinking habits from a health and wellbeing perspective. It is important for us to respect these changes and integrate them into our future endeavors as a company.

After much deliberation, we have made the tough decision to retire JustWine. This decision enables us to refocus our efforts where they will have the greatest impact and where we can most effectively serve our audiences in a meaningful and forward-thinking way.

We want to express our profound gratitude to each member of our community – from the app users who embraced our vision, to the wineries that partnered with us, to the wine enthusiasts who enriched our platform with their passion. Your contributions have been crucial in establishing JustWine as a leading international brand, and we are forever thankful for your support.

While this may seem like the closing of a chapter, we prefer to view it as the commencement of a new voyage, one where we continue to evolve and innovate in the spaces we serve. As we step into this new phase, we will carry forward all that we have learned from JustWine, using that knowledge to guide us into the future.

Thank you for being an integral part of our journey thus far. We look forward to serving you in new and exciting ways in the future.

Srn member links, the weird and wild wine-drinking games of history.

  • Ben O'Donnell

One of Italy's most popular and enduring historic drinking games is simple enough: Participants essentially drank as much wine as possible, stopping at intervals to insult each other. To keep things lively, each player had a knife on him. A grand time was had by all who survived a match.

So it went for many wine-drinking games in history, from Greek to Chinese: frenetic, messy, enthralling affairs with bizarre rules and tools, which could fire up an evening—or put a quick end to it.

"It is a forbidden game," wrote French chronicler Edmond About of the Italian passatella , in his rumination Rome of To-Day , published in 1861, "but in Rome, nothing is allowed, and everything is done." In his account, he sits in on a few rounds in a Trastevere tavern. Variants of the game exist going back to antiquity, but here's a basic outline of the proceedings: By the time Italian had paved over Latin as the lingua franca in Italy, the game had two essential positions, the padrone and the sotto-padrone ("boss" and "underboss"). After all players pitched in to buy wine, the padrone would be determined by cards, dice, bocce or, most commonly it seems, morro , a rock-paper-scissors-math hand game. The padrone , "master of wine," took one carafe (about a quart, according to another 1860 telling), gave one to his sidekick and then determined how much wine each of the other players should be allotted, usually while delivering a little ditty—or taunt.

In About's game, the master, a "handsome blacksmith," acts a bit of a jerk about the whole thing. One companion repeatedly requests wine only to be told, "He shall not drink!" As About notes, while everyone else at the table finds this hilarious, the teetotaler fumes. After all, "he had paid; his throat was itching; the wine passed under his nose, and his friends made sport of him." Once the wine is gone, the loser calls a second game, gets shafted again, and then a third time. By now, he's "drunk with thirst and spite."

"May you die of a cold accident!" he fulminates at the blacksmith. (About helpfully notes that a "cold accident" means one with knives.)

"And you, you'll die of a dry accident!" Again, the table erupts in fits of laughter. About leaves, and later that night at the opera, he strikes up a conversation with an aggrieved theatergoer. As it happens, there was a stabbing at the tavern earlier: Some guy who kept losing at passatella killed the padrone . "What vexes me," complains the opera watcher, "is the other fellow took my knife to give his stab."

About is taken aback. "So you pass your life in assassinating your friends?" His new acquaintance reassures him that, really, everyone has knifed at least one pal to death, so it's not that big of a deal. Another description, An Artist's Life in Italy in 1860 , alleges that a man who leaves the passatella sober night after night gets the message—no one likes him—and turns the knife on himself.

While the Romans busily attacked their cups and friends, enterprising wine drinkers in the Far East were dreaming up their own diversions, no less bewitching for lack of knives. Some bore resemblance to Western games of the time, others uncannily match schoolyard and fairground games of our own times, and still others get a little lost in translation.

The Chinese, like the Italians, were fond of appointing toastmasters; even in the more modern script, the phrase "wine drinking games conducted by an elected leader" is just two characters long. One was the "statues game," according to the book Chinese Wine . If it was in play at a party, the guy who was "it" called "statues!" and all attendees froze in place for one minute. Anyone who moved or laughed, drank.

The Chinese also enjoyed a game essentially identical to the Roman morra . (In ancient times, play was called micare digitis , "to flash the fingers," and Roman chroniclers reported it was a huge hit with centurions during the long, tedious hours of fireside downtime at camp or on campaigns.) Two players each simultaneously show a certain number of fingers and call out a guess of the total number thrown out. The closer guess wins; the loser drinks a cup of wine (or even three, according to one 19th-century traveler in China). The game was fast and loud, each round only lasting 30 seconds or so.

There were other games of humiliation, mental dexterity or chance, but Asians and Europeans alike also faced off in feats of physical finesse under alcohol duress.

The Chinese played tou hu , lawn darts, but with a kettle, an arrow and drinking. No doubt tricky, but no contest of the eye and arm quite matched the thoroughly baffling ancient Greek game of kottabos , bizarre and frustrating enough that the Romans seem to have left it in the closet when they dressed up in so many other affectations of Greek culture.

The kottabos player first drains his kylix (saucer) of wine, but leaves a few drops of dregs at the bottom, according to descriptions by ancient writers. With one finger around the handle of the kylix , he (or she) then must deftly flick the saucer so the wine hits a target. In one version, the target is a brass bowl; a clang signals that the shot connected. In another version, the bowl is filled with water, and the targets are shallow cups floating in it. He who sinks the most cups wins. The varsity kottabos kit required a pole with two saucers attached to it and a little figurine who himself often held a miniature drinking horn. You might hit the small saucer until it filled with wine and tipped over into the large saucer or you might stand the little figurine on top of the pole and try to knock him into the saucer. The loser, presumably, is the guy hosting the party who has to clean up afterward.

Eventually, history's revelers tired of staining their clothes and murdering their friends, and the rise of mass-market light beer put an end to most games with wine, save for the occasional (non-lethal) passatella or Tour de Franzia. But next time you think of wine as the beverage of gentility, remember that not so long ago, it was just as much a drink of black eyes as black ties.

15 Fun Drinking Games for Couples

Last Updated on September 25, 2023 by Jo Fitzsimons

If you thought drinking games were a recent invention, you might be surprised to know know that there’s sound evidence that people have been playing drinking games since the fifth century BC. And the underlying purpose of these games has never changed – to ensure that every second spent with one’s drinking companion is meaningful.

While drinking games have seen a surge in popularity in nearly all social circles, they have also transpired into a fun activity for couples involved in romantic relationships. Playing these activities together might go a long way toward revitalizing a dormant romance, bolstering the chemistry between two people who are just getting to know one another, or helping a husband and wife spend quality time together on a regular Friday night.

couple looking into each other's eyes

In that context, drinking games for couples can help strengthen the social bonding between the partners. This is because drinking games for couples allow the participants to express themselves, all while enjoying their favorite drink.

If you’re looking for a fun and exciting way to spend an evening with your significant other, drinking games are a great choice. Whether you’re just getting to know each other or have been together for years, these games will surely bring some laughter and good times. So, grab a couple of drinks, gather around a table, and get ready to have a blast.

A quick safety warning: drinking games are fun but pace yourself, don’t drink to excess and add some soft-drinks and snacks along the way. But if you do wake up with a fuzzy head, check out our guides: 15 Best Hangover Foods (and Foods to Avoid) and How to Ease Your Hangover in 7 Simple Steps .

Table of Contents

1. Virtual Jigsaw Puzzle

In order to participate in this fun puzzle game, one participant otould choose an online  Jigsaw puzzle , and the other participant’s goal will be to solve the puzzle in the shortest amount of time. The individual solving the puzzle must take a drink once per minute until the puzzle is solved, starting with the first minute.

Couples who are up for a challenge and want to put their puzzle-solving skills to the test will find this game very enjoyable. Furthermore, you could make the game even more fun and enjoyable by instituting a rule that stipulates the player who takes the longest to finish the puzzle to down an additional beverage after the round.

2. Bust A Gut

The drinking game known as “bust a gut” is ideal for people who share a hilarious sense of humor. In practice, each participant has thirty seconds in which they are expected to make their partner laugh by either saying or doing something incredibly humorous. This can work especially well for couples who’ve known each other a long time. Start with “Remember that time…”

If they don’t laugh, the participant in charge of making the jokes has to buy the other participant a drink. On the other hand, if the silent partner in crime bursts into laughter, it’s the other way around. One of the most appealing aspects of this game is that it can be played and enjoyed in various settings, such as the living room sofa, the bedroom, and even in the local pub or the middle of a dancefloor.

3. Never Have I Ever

To play “never have I ever,” each person takes turns making a statement beginning with “never have I ever…” and finishing with something they’ve never done. For example, “never have I ever gone bowling.”

Anyone who has done the thing mentioned in the sentence must have a sip. This game is excellent for getting to know each other and finding fun and interesting facts about each other’s past experiences. “Never have I ever” is a great game to play while sipping your favorite wine and enjoying each other’s company.

4. The Superlatives Game (the ‘most likely’ game)

The so-called superlatives game, otherwise known as the ‘most likely’ game is far more enjoyable when played with more than one couple at a time. For this reason, this game became the favorite drinking game for double dates.

The superlatives game is a fun drinking game in which someone says a superlative i.e. something most likely, and everyone points at the person it’s most applicable for. So, for instance, you might say, “most likely to finish the last of the Prosecco or eat a whole tub of gelato ,” and then everyone should point to who they think is most likely to empty the bottle, presumably whoever gets drunk the most in the group, or is the group’s chief cocktail maker , and that person then drinks. Yay, fun!

Before you start playing the game, you should assemble an extensive list of superlatives for the game because it can be challenging to come up with good pens off the cuff while playing. So here are a few good ones you can use: “most likely to drink Bellini for breakfast ,” “most likely to marry in Vegas,” and “most likely to invest in a Ponzi scheme.” Here are plenty more ‘Most Likely’ Questions .

5. Quarters

This drinking game is perfect for couples who enjoy watching movies or TV series at home. Put a few quarters in plain sight between the cushions of your sofa. Afterward, you and your partner should “fight” to retrieve a quarter from behind the couch cushions after watching a movie or a season with your partner. The player who comes in last must suffer the repercussions that have been decided upon, while the winner gets a drink for their efforts.

6. Flip The Cup!

This is a popular drinking game frequently played in big groups at college parties, but it can be just as much fun with two players. This isn’t a game to play with hard drinks like Negronis You will require lower-alcoholic beverages such as beer, and plastic cups to play it.

Five cups are filled to the first line for each player, who then lines them up in a row on the side while seated across from one another at the table. Each participant must then grab their first cup and guzzle it as quickly as they can as the players count to three. Next, they must place the cup on the table’s edge and flip it with one finger so that it lands upside down.

The players can only move on to the next drink if their cup has been appropriately flipped. Whoever finishes first wins.

7. The Moustache TV Game

This one is relatively easy: you simply draw a mustache on some paper and stick it to your tv screen. Play your preferred movie or television program next. Finally, you sip a beverage of choice each time someone’s face gets a full mustache.

However, to avoid damaging the screen, you might need to be careful when taping the mustache to the TV. You might also include other things like top hats or beards to add to the fun.

8. Eye Contact

Doesn’t looking into each other’s eyes bring partners closer together? The rules of this drinking game are the easiest to understand ever! You won’t have to do much more than look into each other’s stunning eyes—something we know you both like doing—and see who can stay still the longest before blinking. You are required to take a sip of wine (or Prosecco ) whenever one of your eyelids blinks.

Want a fun drink to serve? Try making Passion Fruit Martinis .

9. Drunk Monopoly

Another fun drinking game for couples is “drunk monopoly.” This game is played just like the classic board game, but with a twist—every time a player lands on a property they must take a drink.

Players can also choose to make their own rules, such as taking a drink every time they pass “Go” or every time they have to pay rent to another player. “Drunk monopoly” is a great game to play while sipping on your favorite wine and enjoying each other’s company. As this is likely to be a long game, make a night of it by serving some snacks. Here’s a couple of our handy guides: Ultimate Prosecco Food and Wine Pairing Guide and 14 Types of Italian Cheese Everyone Needs To Know .

10. Power Hour

In contrast to the majority of entertaining drinking games for couples, in which someone inevitably comes out as a winner, there is typically no loser during power hour. On the other hand, power hour is without a doubt one of the most effective games to engage in if your goal is to elicit the most profound feelings from your partner.

To participate in the game, each player needs to consume one sip of wine per minute for one whole hour. And as you are doing so, you are required to gaze intently into the eyes of one another. (Take small sips or pop a soft drink into your main drink to keep things steady).

11. Would You Rather

Another fun drinking game for couples is “would you rather.” To play, one person asks the other, “Would you rather…” and poses two choices. The other person must choose which option they would instead do and explain why.

For example, “Would you rather go bungee jumping or diving?” The person who chose the option must then take a drink. This game is great for getting to know each other’s preferences and finding out more about each other’s personalities.  “Would you rather” is a great addition to any game night.

12. If Simon Says Drink, Drink!

Another easy-to-play drinking game that may be a lot of fun, and you can play it on your next date is Simon Says. When playing Simon says, partners take turns acting as Simon and giving instructions to the other partner about what they should do. For example, you can say: ‘Simon says…kiss your boyfriend’.

13. Answer A Relationship-Related Question Or Drink

Couples who want to deepen their relationship or take it to the next level should play this drinking game. Start by posing a question on relationships. You can inquire as generally or specifically as you like. How long you’ve known one other will determine everything.

Your companion has the option of giving a truthful, open response or opting to sip alcohol. The individual who loses is typically the first to suggest a new game.

Woman hugging man against green leaf background

14. Drawing While Drunk

It makes no difference whether you are an artist or not. Set the timer, pick up the pencil and paper, and begin drawing. Since your partner needs to guess what you drew, try to keep it as straightforward as you can. You need to take a sip of your wine after every 20 seconds, so draw swiftly. Once they correctly guess your work of art, it’s your time to do so.

15. Two Truths And A Lie

To play two truths and a lie, each partner takes turns telling three statements about themselves —two of which are true and one of which is a lie. The other person must then try to guess which statement is the lie.

If they guess correctly, the person who told the statements must take a drink. This game is great for getting to know each other better and finding out interesting facts about each other. “Two Truths and a Lie” is a great addition to any game night for couples.

Drinking games for couples are intended to be enjoyable and are expected to also be exciting. However, these activities ought to be original and mind-boggling in such a way that they enable you to learn something new about your partner.

The most important thing is to keep in mind to play drinking games in a responsible and controlled manner. If you don’t take precautions, you risk getting so drunk that you can’t enjoy the moment with your significant other. So, be careful and have fun.

The Andalusian city of Jerez de la Fronera in Southern Spain is steeped in gastronomic culture. Known for its lively tabanco scene, rebellious flamenco, thoroughbred horses, and of course, its fortified sherry wines, the city’s faded grandeur and strong culinary heritage make for the perfect accompaniment to a weekend getaway. Here’s a little guide to exploring Jerez while indulging in the local wine scene.

First, a very quick guide to Sherry

Sherry is a fortified wine produced primarily from the Palomino Fino variety in what is known as the Sherry triangle - the three key towns of Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa María in the south of Andalusia. In and out of fashion over the last few hundred years, it can be made in a number of different styles, ranging from dry to sweet, and young to extensively aged in cask. It is typically bottled from a Solera system, meaning that the wines have aged in barrel and received the benefit of continual top ups from younger vintages. The result of such fractional blending is a more balanced wine that contains the freshness of youth and the complexity of age.

The most memorable characteristics of Sherry are the flavours of dried fruit, brine and nuts that can be found in the Fino and Manzanilla categories. This additional flavor comes from a deliberate maturation under a layer of flor, while in the case of Manzanilla, proximity to the ocean during cellaring gives additional salinity. Amontillado and Oloroso Sherries are much richer, and heavier but are increasingly important assets in the world of gastronomy. There is also Palo Cortado, which stylistically floats, somewhat ambiguously, in between. Although much rarer, the best sweet sherries are produced from the Pedro Ximénez grape and its hedonistic, treacle like flavours are a brilliant partner to deserts.

Where to drink

Sherry can be found in almost all of the city’s bars and cafes. In Jerez, the concept of a tabanco dominates the social scene. The word itself, fairly unique to this part of Andalusia, is thought to have originated around the mid 17th century as an amalgamation of ‘estanco’ and ‘tobacco’, meaning a small shop dealing in state controlled produce such as wine and tobacco. Its casual informality provides a brilliant method for following the ambience as it meanders from street to street. Simple, authentic tapas can be impromptu and shift the focus to hanging out and going with the flow. These days you’ll find a lively atmosphere mixed with a relaxed approach to serving bite sized snacks and sherry. If you’re looking to soak up the local vibe, these are the places to check out.

Tabanco San Pablo

Tabanco San Pablo is a rustic tabanco with a traditional look and feel. Historic pictures and adverts capture the agricultural trappings of the surrounding area. Large casks provide a great backdrop and make it clear you’re there to celebrate and enjoy Sherry. It is best known for its Palo Cortados, which are served alongside simple tapas. The atmosphere is lively and upbeat, with live flamenco performances. Essentially, whether you’re passing through or there for the night, it’s a great place to chill out and have a few drinks.

El Pasaje has been open since 1925 and offers a rustic window into simple Andalusian gastronomy. It closed its doors briefly in 2010, but was then taken over by a lawyer from Jerez, Antonio Ramírez, who restored it in line with the typical identity of a tabanco. The wooden counter sits central to everything that happens here, providing a focal point for chatting over a glass or two of sherry from the cask. The walls are painted in vibrant greens and reds, and punctuated by large flamenco adverts to create an atmospheric decor. Looking around the tobacco you get a strong sense of local culture.

Where to dine

Andalusian tapas has long been the staple food here. Dropping in at any of the city’s many casual eateries provides an excuse for a light snack. When it comes to dining though, there are two key destinations that are unmissable. Both were conceived by entrepreneurial chefs and both have attained notoriety through the award of Michelin stars. They are rooted in a deep connection to Jerez while managing to remain unique. The recommendation is to experience both gastronomic interpretations.

Mantua is more than just a dining destination, it is a symphony of flavors and a celebration of tradition. Under the guidance of entrenurial chef Israel Ramos, Mantua’s simple but effective approach to theatre and quality has earned him a Michelin star. Named after an ancient wine grape that was once prevalent in the vineyards of Jerez, the ethos of Mantua is to partner exceptional ingredients with both still and fortified local wines. Utilising a range of small wineries, it is the passion and thought behind the wine list that helps elevate this intimate 16 seater tasting experience to memorable levels.

Lú Cocina y Alma

Juanlu Fernández, or Lu for short, frequently describes his approach to cooking as ‘rearguard vanguard’, a playful dichotomy that captures the essence of his first business venture, LÚ Cocina y Alma, an intimate restaurant space in the historical centre. A self proclaimed Francophile, but born in Jerez, he mastered the foundational techniques of the classic French repertoire before unleashing them on the local ingredients of his homeland. Here’s a more in depth article on how the restaurant integrates Andalusian cuisine with the local fortified wines .

Where to stay

Tio pepe hotel.

The Tio Pepe Hotel is the world’s first Sherry hotel. Given its boutique, high end offering, it hopefully won’t be the last. A contemporary, but stylish look and feel is backed up by a brilliant location in the historic centre of the town. Located next to the iconic Gonzalez Byass winery, this is the best spot to unwind through the afternoon heat and drink a few Sherries - or perhaps sleep them off. The rooftop pool overlooks the impressive gothic Cathedral and provides a sense quiet exclusivity. Situated within a short walk of all the key bars and restaurants, it is also next to one of the most beautiful streets in all of Spain, the cobblestoned Calle Ciegos. The hotel boasts an impressive restaurant, offering both inside and al fresco dining, and more importantly, has one of the most extensive lists of aged Sherry anywhere. This is the place to indulge in Gonzalez Byass’s archives of back vintages and rare releases.

Wineries to visit and wines to try

The great thing about Jerez is that most bodegas (wineries) are very close to the city. Many are walkable from the centre, or at least only a short taxi ride away. The bigger challenge is that not many are visitable without some form of prior contact. A tour of the González Byass cellars is imperative and given how well they are geared up for tourism, it’s likely to be enough for all but the fanatics. Not only does it boast a wealth of history, its large collections of mature wines offer the most comprehensive look at the Sherry’s potential evolution. Beyond this, it’s worth an advance email to Bodegas Lustau. A final recommendation for something to try while out and about? Jan Petersen’s brilliant Sherries at Bodega Fernando de Castilla.
