Touring the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville

Entering the Yuengling Brewery for the free tour.

Yuengling beer is one of Pennsylvania’s best-known and most-beloved products, right up there with Hershey’s chocolate and Zippo lighters.

Welcome to Yuengling's sign at the entrance to the museum and gift shop.

And since 1829 , the Yuengling family has been brewing beer in Pottsville, Schuylkill County , earning Yuengling the title as “America’s Oldest Brewery” !

What’s even better is that you can take a free one-hour guided tour of this historic and still very-much active brewery in Pottsville, AND get a few free beer samples at the end of the tour!

Cans of Yuengling Lager being filled at the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville Pennsylvania.

You can find the most up-to-date information about the tour rules and hours of operation on the official Yuengling website , but I’ll give you a brief photographic overview of what you can expect to see, hear, smell, and taste on the Yuengling brewery tour !

Exploring the Yuengling Museum

Your tour will start across the street from the historic brewery in the equally historic Yuengling Dairy building , constructed in 1920 to help the company survive Prohibition (which lasted from 1919 until 1933).

The Yuengling Dairy building that now houses the Yuengling museum, gift shop, and tasting room.

This building, which now houses the Yuengling museum, gift shop, and tasting room (where the tour ultimately ends), was once used to produce products such as Yuengling ice cream .

Yuengling ice cream was introduced during the Prohibition era when FRank Yuengling built a dairy to help keep his workers employed.

The museum is located at 420 Mahantongo St, Pottsville, PA 17901 , and there is free parking on a large gravel lot behind the dairy building, as well as metered street parking up and down the street if the free lot is full.

I registered for a spot on the next tour at the cash register in the gift shop, then proceeded to check out the museum while I waited for the tour to start.

David G. Yuengling, founder of Yuengling Brewery.

There I found a wealth of information about the founding family of Yuengling Brewery, as well as many examples of Yuengling bottles, cans, labels, and advertising memorabilia from over the years.

The gift shop adjacent to the museum has just about anything and everything the Yuengling enthusiast could want!

When the announcement was made that my tour was starting, I made my way back to the area near the entrance to the dairy, and our tour guide led us across the street to the historic red brick Yuengling Brewery .

The iconic Yuengling Brewery on Mahantongo Street in Pottsville Pennsylvania.

Exploring the Yuengling Brewery

We entered the brewery at the street level, and immediately the sweet smell of Yuengling beer enveloped us.

Descending a flight of stairs, we entered into the subterranean “beer caves” – hand-dug tunnels where Yuengling beer was aged in the era before mechanical refrigeration.

The tunnels are cool (but not too cold), so if you are easily chilled you may want to take a light jacket or hoodie along for this part of the tour.

Another interesting subterranean feature of the brewery was the Rathskeller , a generic German term for a tavern below street. Built in 1936 , we were told by our tour guide that at one time the Rathskeller served as a break room for the brewery, in a time before OSHA when drinking on the job was permitted!

We made our way through more passageways beneath the brewery and saw where raw materials for the brewing process were stored.

A fire door in the basement of the Yuengling Brewery.

Eventually we arrived at a more modern section of the brewery where cans of Yuengling Lager were being filled.

Our final stop was back across the street in the dairy building at the tasting room , where everyone 21 and older was allowed two free samples of Yuengling products , including some of their delicious birch beer if you preferred something non-alcoholic.

One interesting feature of the dairy building is a chandelier made of Yuengling bottles.

Final Thoughts on Touring the Yuengling Brewery

Overall I found the entire experience of touring the Yuengling Brewery to be very interesting, and everyone working there was extra-friendly and accommodating.

The Yuengling Mansion

Although it is not part of the official tour, just a few blocks up Mahantongo Street you’ll find the Yuengling Mansion , built in 1913.

Visiting the Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville: America’s Oldest Brewery

The bottling line at Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, PA.

This is a guest post brought to you by Lance from TravelAddicts.net .

Among beer aficionados, Yuengling Brewery occupies a special place: it is America’s Oldest Brewery. They have been brewing continuously since 1829 – even through the American Prohibition (they produced medicinal porters).

Yuengling also serves a growing regional area – only 21 states. That kind of selective distribution brings with it an air of exclusivity and a tremendous desire to see what the fuss is about. And Yuengling is most definitely worth the fuss.

Coming up Mahantongo Street from downtown Pottsville, you happen on the two idyllic brick buildings housing Yuengling Brewery.

If you have toured large breweries, you begin to wonder, is this it? It’s cute, but it’s also really small. There’s no visitor center. There’s no security office. There isn’t even a parking lot (it’s all street parking; $0.25 per hour). What there is: the most authentic brewery we’ve ever seen.

As you walk into the brewery, you enter through one of the production rooms and follow the signs to the gift shop. The free tours leave from here either twice a day (weekdays) or three times per day (weekends). Specific tour times are noted on the brewery website and include a special summer schedule.

The tour length is approximately 75 minutes, which includes a tasting of two beverages (a non-alcoholic option is available for those who don’t want to imbibe).

Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville, Pennsylvania: America's Oldest Brewery.

The tour takes you into the brewhouse where they explain the Yuengling beer-making process. You will also see the bottling process in a second building.

That’s all interesting, but the highlight of the tour is the underground cave where Yuengling used to store their beer. It is carved several hundred feet back into the mountain. It is wet and cold and perfect for aging beer. During Prohibition, the Feds were concerned about bootlegging and walled off the cave with bricks – a small portion of the original wall still remains.

After our tour, our fantastic tour guide, Vickie, offered us samples of the brews. The brewery maintains a modest gift shop selling T-shirts and barware, but you can also purchase reproductions of their classic advertising through the years.

The walls of the gift shop also display artifacts from the company history. And if you are quiet and there at the right time of day, turn your head up to the ceiling and listen to the grain flowing the black pipes on its way to becoming beer.

We visited way back in 1989. Unless memory is not serving me well, were there at one time muraled walls somewhere? Also is Fritz still around?

Yuengling now has a 2nd brewery in Tampa, FL. (previously Bud/Bush and Schlitz). It’s quite a popular beer here as well, but I suspect a lot is shipped north.

A trip inside Yuengling: America's largest craft brewer

Nov 13, 2019 • Ennis Davis, AICP

Established in 1829, D. G. Yuengling & Son is the oldest continuously operating brewing company in the United States. Based on volume of beer sold in 2018, it is also the top craft beer company in the country.

yuengling brewing company tours

What has become Yuengling was founded as the Eagle Brewery by German brewer David Gottlieb Jüngling. Establishing his brewery in Pottsville, PA, Jüngling anglicized his surname to Yuengling. In 1873, it changed its name to D.G. Yuengling and Son after Frederick Yuengling joined his father in operating the company.

Although Yuengling is headquartered in Pennsylvania, where its 19th century brewery remains in operation, the brewer’s largest brewery is located in Tampa, FL. Here, free behind-the-scene tours are offered daily illustrating how “America’s Oldest Brewery†uses modern technology to brew fine beer in a time-honored tradition. Supplying Yuengling’s Southeast market, this 62-acre brewery’s history includes many of the country’s most renown beer producers from the Midwest.

Tampa’s Yuengling brewery dates back to 1958 when the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company expanded into Florida, building the brewery on top of a former World War II era U.S. Army Air Force base. Founded by August Krug, as a tavern brewery in Milwaukee in 1849, Schlitz had grown to become the country’s largest beer producer by the time it came to Tampa. Schlitz’s appeal began to decline in the 1970s when its Schlitz beer brewing process as changed to reduce production costs, causing its beer to lose flavor and consistency and spoil more quickly.

After a disasters sales campaign and major strike at its flagship Milwaukee brewery, Schlitz was acquired by the Stroh Brewing Company in 1982, resulting in Stroh becoming the country’s third largest brewer. To satisfy a Justice Department antitrust requirement, the Detroit-based brewery dating back to 1850, traded the Tampa brewery to Pabst Brewing Company for a plant in St. Paul, MN in 1983. Founded by Jacob Best in 1844, Pabst was renowned in Milwaukee for its brewery tours where visitors were rewarded with bottomless glasses of beer.

yuengling brewing company tours

However, Pabst wouldn’t hold on to the brewery for long. In 1987, after the antitrust requirement expired, Stroh took the Tampa brewery back. In 1996, Pabst became a virtual brewer, contracting all of its beer production to Stroh. After losing Pabst’s contract in 1999, Stroh closed the Tampa brewery resulting in the lose of 154 manufacturing jobs. Stroh’s bad fortune created an opportunity for Yuengling, which had benefitted from rapid growth, following the 1987 reintroduction of its flagship brand, Yuengling Lager.

By the 1990s, demand in the Northeast outstripped the bewery’s production abilities. The 1999 acquisition of Tampa’s recently closed plant allowed Yuengling to meet its Northeast production needs, while also providing opportunity to expand into the rapidly growing Sunbelt market. In 2013, Yuengling completed construction on a new brewhouse, increasing the brewery’s 475-barrel system to a 675 barrel system.

Today, Yuengling’s Tampa brewery produces around 1.5 million barrels of beer annually, enabling the company to distribute its products in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. If you find yourself in the Tampa Bay area with time to spare, the D. G. Yuengling & Son brewery is the perfect place for an afternoon excursion.

Don’t Miss the Ever Satisfying Yuengling Brewery Tour

Yuengling lager.  Ahh yes, deliciousness in a can.  We were recently traveling through Pennsylvania looking for some cool things to do when we came across the Yuengling Brewery Tour which is the oldest brewery in America.  Sign. Me. Up.

yuengling brewing company tours

I’ve become a big fan of this rich amber colored beer ever since we started visiting Bryanna’s grandparents in Florida.   It was always on tap at the restaurants and bars we went to, so I figured it was southern beer.   Little did I know it was a northerner, just like me.   I like it so much in fact, I’m drinking one right now.   Hey, when in Rome..or writing about Rome…or something like that.

The brewery is located in Pottsville, Pennsylvania and the streets in the town are so sloped you have to lean forward when walking up hill.   It’s on the side of a mountain, which I’ll talk about in a bit and it’s located next to a church, which I find ironically awesome.

Yuengling Brewery Tour

Yuengling Brewery Tour

Alright, enough already, on with the tour.   Our guide was a young college student that was pretty soft spoken, but he definitely knew his stuff regarding the beer, the brewery, and their history.   We started by going down to the basement.   And by basement, I basically mean cave.   We’re talking Goonies here.

cave1

Our guide explained the brewery was built in this location so they could mine into the base of the mountain it was next to.   It served as the perfect refrigerator for brewing and storing their beer.   It stays at a consistent 54 degrees all year round.   It also had a stream of water coming into the basement from the mountain. Yuengling actually used this water in their brew early on before switching over to city water.

cave2

Along one full side of the long hall in the basement was a thick cinder block wall.   Our tour guide did a quick quiz on what that was for.   There were a lot of guesses: securing the beer, reinforcing the ceiling.   Well, it was put up by good old Uncle Sam during prohibition.   The entire brewing room was sealed off.   Our guide said the first shipment of beer was put on the truck and out for delivery at 12:01am the day prohibition was lifted, which is very curious since it takes 24-28 days to brew a batch 🙂

We then went upstairs and got a good look at the giant kettles used in all the phases of brewing.   Turns out this brewery is very small compared to their larger brewery in Tampa.

yuengling-brewery

After seeing this, we went to the bottling room.   This giant room was filled with conveyer belts all jammed with empty beer bottles waiting for the next shift.   We visited on a Saturday, so production was stopped, but if you come during the week, you can see this all in motion during the Yuengling Brewery Tour, which would be very cool.

yuengling-bottling1

The last stop on the tour, and probably the best part, the tasting in The Rathskeller tavern!   They have all of their brews on tap, including a seasonal brew and you get to choose 2 to try.   You get an 8-ounce cup and your guide switches over to bartender mode.   We had 6 kids with us and they have a local root beer on tap for them.   My little tip for all the parents out there- I’d say 1 glass of root beer is quite enough for a little one, and since you wouldn’t want their second one to go to waste….well, you catch my drift.

yuengling-tavern3

So you finish up the tour by  the gift shop where we picked up a few things.   Overall it was a great tour that I would highly recommend to anyone traveling in the area.   Check out Yuengling’s website for more information on the tours and directions to the brewery www.yuengling.com .

Few things to take note of:

  • The Yuengling Brewery Tour runs every hour from about 10am until 1pm Monday through Saturday.  It is all first-come, first-serve, so plan on getting there early enough to make a tour.  We arrived at about 10am and just made it into the 11am tour.  Check their website for specific dates and times www.yuengling.com/breweries/pottsville/ .
  • Narrow, steep hills getting to the brewery.   No problem in a car, but definitely plan on leaving your rig elsewhere.   The folks at the brewery said we could bring our rig and park it on the street during the tour, but after going there, I would not recommend this at all.
  • Be sure to wear close toed shoes.   They enforce this pretty strictly.
  • Bring your camera. They have no restrictions on pictures/flash/etc.   Take advantage of this since most tours don’t allow it.
  • Bring your id.   For the tasting you’ll have to show you’re 21 or older.
  • Try to go on a week day.   Seeing everything in motion would be pretty cool.

Yuengling Brewery Tour: America's Oldest Brewery

Step back in time—cold beer in hand—and discover the origins of America’s oldest brewery: the Yuengling brewery (Yuengling, pronounced YING-ling), is best known for its mild amber lager and also produces other beer varieties.

While you might not take your kids to a bar, the family-friendly brewery offers tours that are open to all ages. Complete your free walking tour with samples of their beverage—perfect after a sweltering day in Tampa .

Sunday is a day of rest everywhere, including Yuengling; it's the only day tours aren't offered. Beer also isn’t produced on Sundays, so Mondays through Fridays are the best days to go. There are typically three tours on each weekday—and two on Saturday—offered between mid-morning and early afternoon. Reservations aren't required, but since tour times are subject to change, give the brewery a ring before heading over for a tour. It’s also closed on major holidays.

Getting There

The brewery is about 9 miles northeast of downtown Tampa. If you're staying right in Tampa, use our Tampa travel guide to plan your trip before and after your visit to the brewery. Drive into the "Biergarten Entrance" on 30th Street and you'll find ample parking. If you prefer to kick back and let someone else handle the driving, take the Route 18 bus to 30th Street at East 109th Avenue, and you'll be let off in front of the brewery. Starting the day with a brewery tour and beer tasting could relax you just enough to be ready to take on a hectic amusement park, so it's convenient that Yuengling is located just 2 miles north of the main entrance to Busch Gardens.

What to Expect

Listen to a guide tell the tale of Yuengling's history, which began when a German immigrant named David Yuengling opened his original brewery located in Pennsylvania. You'll be led through the plant on a 75-minute tour of the beer-making process and may get the chance the chat with a master brewer and ask questions. Next, pull up a barstool in the biergarten, which serves as a tasting room. Sip samples of Yuengling's different brews, and go back for seconds if the staff is still serving. Soda is also available for the under-21 set and nondrinkers.

Tips and Guidelines

You may need to save your favorite shoes for another day. You won't be allowed on the tour wearing anything except closed shoes; even shoes with closed toes but openings elsewhere, such as clogs, aren't allowed. If you're over 21 and planning to sample the goods, make sure to bring your ID. Since tours are first-come, first-served, aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early. On a rainy day, you won't be the only one trying to duck the drizzle with an indoor tour, so you may want to arrive even earlier to beat the crowds. Bottoms up!

The Story Of Yuengling, America's Oldest Brewing Company, Predates Prohibition

Yuengling beer can on car

It's a safe bet that Americans were brewing, distilling, or fermenting alcohol well before formal laws required registration. We may never know which moonshiner or home brewer was first in that regard, but we do know who's been doing it legally for the longest amount of time. At least when it comes to beer, it's the Yuengling brewery in Pennsylvania, founded in 1829, almost 100 years before Prohibition shuttered many would-be competitors.

The brand bears the name of its founder, David G. Yuengling, a German immigrant who arrived in America from Wuerttemberg, a town in Southwestern Germany known today for its influential beer culture. His father had, Friedrich, been running a brewery there since 1816. As Friedrich's youngest child, David had little hope for inheriting the family business, so off he went to a new life in America.

Coal mining brought in new residents, and a natural soft-water spring was conducive to brewing German-style beer. Nearby caves dug by local coal miners provided a cool place for storing the fresh brews, allowing a long, slow aging process. The caves still exist, along with some of the original equipment and a whole lot of history. The brewery stands firm after nearly two centuries, with five generations of Yuengling descendants carrying on the legacy of America's oldest brewery.

Yuengling moves forward

Despite being destroyed by fire in 1831, just two years after opening, David Yuengling's brewery was rebuilt on Mahantonga Street in Pottsville, where it remains to this day. Surviving the Prohibition years of 1920 to 1933 took some creative thinking and planning, but Yuengling's descendants cunningly adapted the brews to near beer products with an alcohol content under 0.5%, and supplemented income by opening a dairy across from the brewery. To celebrate the 21st Amendment repealing Prohibition , the company cheekily delivered a truckload of "Winner Beer" to President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House. It arrived on the exact day the amendment was ratified.

The original Lord Chesterfield Ale and Dark Brewed Porters created by David Yuengling are still brewed today, but they have a lot of company. Another brewery opened about three miles away in 2001 following an earlier brewery purchase, creating greater potential for distribution. That was only the beginning, and by 2014, a sixth generation of four female descendants was laying plans for moving things forward. By 2020, the company cemented a joint venture with Molson Coors, and they now have a presence in 26 states.

In 2022, Yuengling released a trendier mango-flavored beer called Bongo Fizz, and there's a limited edition Hershey's Chocolate Porter. But its traditional brews still inform the rest of the crew, including the original amber lager and a collection ranging from porters, ales, pilsners, and a crisp light beer named Flight.

Established in 1829, d. g. yuengling & son is the oldest continuously operating brewing company in the united states. based on volume of beer sold in 2018, it is also the top craft beer company in the country..

yuengling brewing company tours

What has become Yuengling was founded as the Eagle Brewery by German brewer David Gottlieb Jüngling. Establishing his brewery in Pottsville, PA, Jüngling anglicized his surname to Yuengling. In 1873, it changed its name to D.G. Yuengling and Son after Frederick Yuengling joined his father in operating the company.

Although Yuengling is headquartered in Pennsylvania, where its 19th century brewery remains in operation, the brewer’s largest brewery is located in Tampa, FL. Here, free behind-the-scene tours are offered daily illustrating how “America’s Oldest Brewery” uses modern technology to brew fine beer in a time-honored tradition.
