Insider Today

Royal Caribbean is launching a 274-night cruise around the world to set sail in 2023.

Prices start at $61,000 per person.

In a press release on Wednesday, the cruise line said it was "the longest and most comprehensive world cruise out there."

The company said the Ultimate World Cruise, set to depart from Miami, would visit more than 150 destinations in 65 countries on all seven continents.

Royal Caribbean said stops would include Casablanca in Morocco; the Great Barrier Reef in Australia; Antarctica; Brazil, where passengers can see the Christ the Redeemer statue on New Year's Eve; and Beijing.

The cruise starts at $61,000 per person

The inaugural cruise is scheduled to depart from Miami on December 10, 2023, and return on September 10, 2024.

Passengers would travel on the Serenade of the Seas , which has 13 decks and a mini-golf course, an arcade, a rock-climbing wall, a pool, a theater, and a spa. The ship can accommodate almost 2,500 passengers and more than 800 crew members, Royal Caribbean said.

Prices start at $61,000 for a person in an interior stateroom, rising to $65,000 for an oceanview stateroom and $79,000 for a balcony stateroom. A stay in a junior suite starts at $112,000 per person.

Royal Caribbean said passengers would get a 10% discount if they pay in full by January 6, 2023.

The pandemic ground world travel to a halt last year, and cruise lines' revenue plummeted . Carnival Cruises said in June 2020 that it would sell six cruise ships after posting a $4.4 billion loss.

With the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, the industry has rebounded .

"Now more than ever, people have resolved to travel the world and make up for lost time," Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean, said in the press release.

The Ultimate World Cruise is split into four legs: the Americas and Antarctica, Asia and the Pacific, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and northern Europe. Passengers can book them individually rather than opting for the full nine-month trip.

Bookings opened on Wednesday for Royal Caribbean's loyalty-program members at the diamond level or above and will open on October 27 for all other passengers, the company said.

Royal Caribbean said it would announce prices for the four individual legs of the trip when bookings for them open in December.

Want to float away from your worries for the better part of a year?

Then Royal Caribbean International has the cruise for you: a 274-night, 65-country water journey across the world, aptly titled “Ultimate World Cruise.”

Bookings for the seven-continent experience are now open — the inaugural journey of which is set to happen in 2023, and it’s being billed as the world’s longest.

For those looking to take on the full, 150-destination package, including “11 great wonders of the world,” tickets start at $60,999 per person.

If committing more than two-thirds of a year to see the world by boat isn’t for you, there’s also the option to book single legs of the four-leg trip.

The globe floating adventure will set sail from Miami on Dec. 10, 2023, and return there on Sept. 10, 2024.

Royal Caribbean’s “Ultimate World Cruise” is being billed as the world’s longest cruise at 274 nights and including 65 countries.

“This is the world cruise of world cruises,” Royal Caribbean CEO Michael Bayley said in a press release . “Now more than ever, people have resolved to travel the world and make up for lost time. Royal Caribbean is making that a reality with the ultimate vacation . . . to travelers asking themselves where they should go next, we say everywhere.”

The new, extreme offering comes amidst an ongoing, if ebbing, nightmare for the cruise industry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, with passengers testing positive for the coronavirus aboard ships as recently as this month.

Still, executives clearly believe people are ready for the Serenade of the Seas’ ambitious expedition which touches every continent, with stops including Australia’s Great Barrier Reef; the Great Wall of China; the Taj Mahal in India; the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt; the Colosseum in Rome, Italy; Iceland’s Blue Lagoon; Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer; Peru’s Machu Picchu and more.

Indeed, the full itinerary reveals a truly action-packed schedule of visits, with one or two cruising days consistently followed by some of humanity’s most heralded tourist attractions, one after another after another. For anyone with deep pockets, a flexible schedule and a love for nautical travel, Ultimate World Cruise is certainly an efficient way to see all the sights.

Weekend cruises: How to find 2- and 3-night getaways

Erica Silverstein

Weekend trips let you get away without missing too much work or school — but what if your preferred escape is a cruise? I'm here to tell you that weekend cruises are a real thing and can be a wonderful way of getting your ship fix when you're short on time.

The days of the two-night cruise to nowhere are gone, but two- and three-night weekend cruises still exist from ports ranging from Miami to Los Angeles. Read on to learn who sails these short getaways, where you can go and how much that weekend jaunt to the Bahamas is going to cost you.

Best weekend cruise itineraries

64 day cruise

If you're looking to hop a ship for a few nights, you can't just sail from anywhere to anywhere. It's not like booking a hotel. Thanks to the complicated Passenger Vessel Services Act , foreign-flagged cruise ships cannot leave port, sail in circles with their casinos, shops and spas open, then return back to port two nights later. Nor can they hop from one U.S. city to another. Ships need to call in another country before heading back – which limits where you can sail on a weekend cruise.

The most popular weekend cruises sail from Miami, Port Canaveral or Palm Beach in Florida, to the Bahamas, with one or two stops in Nassau, Freeport or the cruise line's private island. Consider it a quick dash to the beach — ironic because you have to get to a warm-weather, coastal area to meet your ship in the first place.

On the Pacific Coast, weekend cruises from Los Angeles, San Diego or Long Beach in California (near Los Angeles) head to Ensenada, Mexico for a quick getaway. Farther north, you might find a short repositioning sailing between Seattle or San Francisco and Vancouver, British Columbia at the beginning or end of the Alaska cruise season .

Weekend cruises from New York or other East Coast ports like Boston or Baltimore don't really exist because two or three nights is not enough time to get to Canada, Bermuda or the Bahamas and back again.

Related: Caribbean vs. Bahamas cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

The other key thing to understand is a weekend cruise will typically require some time off work or missed school. That's because most cruise ships board in the afternoon and depart in the early evening then return to port in the morning. You can't punch out of work at 5 p.m. on Friday, hop aboard a ship and return Sunday night.

The most likely scenario is that you'll arrive at your ship Friday afternoon for a three-night cruise, which will deliver you back to port on Monday morning. Depending on your working hours, you might need to take a half day off on Friday and arrive late to work on Monday. If you've got a flexible schedule or Fridays off — no problem. A few lines offer Thursday or Saturday departures for three-night cruises, but they're rare and would require more missed school or work.

Two-nighters are rare in the weekend cruise world but do exist. The key line for cruisers short on time is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (come late April, it will transition into Margaritaville at Sea ).

This line sails exclusively two-night cruises back and forth between West Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. Depending on the week, you could depart on a Friday, spend Saturday on Grand Bahama Island and come home Sunday. Or, leave Saturday, beach it up Sunday and return Monday morning.

Cruise lines sailing 2- and 3-night weekend cruises

64 day cruise

You can count on Bahamas Paradise/Margaritaville at Sea for a quick weekend cruise fix, but that's a one-ship cruise line sailing an older, refurbished ship. From the major cruise lines, most of the big-ship lines offer a consistent schedule of three-night cruises. The higher-end, luxury lines rarely offer a sailing that short.

Carnival Cruise Line , Disney Cruise Line , MSC Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean all offer three-night Bahamas cruises from Florida to Nassau and/or the line's private island. Departure ports include Miami, Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale.

Carnival, Disney and Royal Caribbean also take care of West Coast folks with three-night sailings from southern California (Long Beach, Los Angeles and San Diego) to Ensenada, Mexico.

You can count on those lines to offer entire seasons of short sailings. A few other lines, such as Holland America or Princess Cruises , will offer the occasional repositioning sailing along the Pacific Coast between San Francisco or Seattle and Vancouver. Sometimes those short cruises will fall over a weekend, allowing you that quick getaway without missing work.

Weekend cruise cost

Cheap weekend cruises are not hard to find; three-night sailings are among the most affordable cruises you can buy, both because you're not on board all that long, and because cruise lines often put older ships without the latest wow-factor attractions on these routes.

I'm currently seeing three-night Bahamas cruises from $129 per person, based on two people sharing an inside (windowless) cabin . That breaks down to $43/night for transportation, food, accommodations and entertainment for one person ($86/night for a couple). You'll have a hard time finding a hotel for that price, let alone lodging plus multiple meals.

The cheapest balcony cabin I found was just shy of $200 total for one person (under $65 per night), though fares in the $200s and $300s were more common.

Prices will vary depending on the cruise line, ship, sail date and how far in advance you're booking. If you're flexible on timing, look for the best weekend cruise deals and plan your getaway for those dates.

Related: 6 ways to get a deal on a cruise

Three-night Mexico cruises at press time are starting at $149 per person ($50 per night), with balconies from $237 ($79 per night).

Note that Disney cruises to the Bahamas or Mexico are priced much higher than other cruise lines. Pricing for a three-night Disney Mexico cruise starts just shy of $1,000 per person for an inside cabin and a three-night Bahamas cruise from $625 per person. Still, it's cheaper than a weeklong Disney cruise.

Pros and cons of weekend cruises

64 day cruise

Weekend cruises only work if you live within easy driving distance of a departure port. That way, you can still work half a day on Friday and simply arrive back to work a little late on Monday (assuming you're a 9-to-5-er).

If you need to fly or drive many hours to your departure port, you're looking at more of a long weekend with a day or two of time off from work required. However, if you have a flexible schedule or work off hours, a weekend cruise is definitely doable.

Weekend cruises have many benefits, the obvious one being they do not require missing much school or work. They're more affordable than a longer cruise, so they can be great for folks on a budget. You can tack them onto a longer vacation in Florida or California to combine two trips into one.

These short trips are also a great way to rack up points toward elite status on your favorite cruise line, especially if you book a suite that earns you extra points.

Related: Short cruises are cheaper, but are they right for you?

The drawbacks are the lack of choice in destination and cruise line. You won't be able to try every restaurant or attraction on board your cruise ship because you simply won't have enough time.

If you party hard, get sunburned or wear yourself out with lots of active shore excursions, you might come home exhausted instead of well rested and not ready to return to the office on Monday.

Weekend cruises also have a reputation for being party cruises. The last time I sailed on a three-night cruise, I met lots of ladies on bachelorette party getaways, and the nightclub, bars and karaoke were hopping each evening — more so than on longer cruises. If you're looking for a more sedate atmosphere, a longer cruise might be more your speed.

Bottom line

Weekend cruises are a fun way to get your ship fix without taking a full vacation or breaking the bank. They make more sense if you live within an hour or two of your cruise ship's departure port, but it can still be worth taking a long weekend for a three-day cruise even if you have to build in some travel time.

However, if you love cruising so much that you might have a hard time leaving a ship after just a few nights, you might want to skip the weekend sailing and save up for a weeklong cruise instead.

Silversea South Pacific Cruise: 64 days of boomer cruising adventure

This article may contain referral links. Read our DISCLOSURE

A Silversea South Pacific Cruise that will blow your mind: Alan and I enjoy South Pacific cruises so much that we keep booking them—again and again. At last count, we’ve cruised the South Pacific six times. But this page is all about our 64-day Silversea South Pacific Cruise experience. We call it La-La because the small ship luxury cruise began and ended in Los Angeles.

Some of the links on this page might include referral links. Read our Disclosure .

The journey was a Silversea Cruises Grand Voyage known as Southern Cross 2015. And this Grand Voyage started out in style with a gala event and night’s stay at the Montage Beverly Hills . Ooh-la-la. (Do you remember how much I loved the Montage Kapalua Bay ?)

And then the 64 days of cruising on Silver Spirit began. What do you think of our itinerary that 29 ports and lot of sea days?

Los Angeles Marquesas Islands: Nuka Hiva French Polynesia: Rangiroa—the snorkeling was awesome , Moorea—we swam with stingrays , Papeete, Bora Bora Cook Islands: Rarotonga New Zealand: Bay of Islands, Auckland, Tauranga, Napier, Picton, Akaroa, Dunedin—the hike on Mt. Cargill was so much fun, Stewart Island—with a walk on Ulva Island , Milford Sound , Dusky Sound Australia: Melbourne, Tasmania (Burnie and Hobart), Sydney, Brisbane New Caledonia: Noumea, Lifou Vanuatu: Villa Fiji: Lautoka, Savusavu Samoa Islands: Apia Kiribatu: Fanning Island Hawaii: Kaui, Oahu—Alan toured the Mighty Mo , Maui—we opted for a jeep excursion on Lanai , and the Big Island Los Angeles

By now, you’d think that we would have visited any South Pacific port worth seeing. But one reason Alan and I chose this itinerary were the new-to-us ports, including Tasmania and most of the New Zealand ones. We also checked items off our boomer bucket list with visits to Milford and Dusky Sounds and Tasmania.

Alan and I loved relaxing days at sea, spa time and the guest lecturers onboard not to mention those 11 formal nights. Yes, we like to get dressed up and dance the night away.

What do I pack for a long, warm weather cruise? Take a look at my tropical cruise gear for items that you might not think about when it comes to a trip like this. And, if you’re a woman of a certain age who’s confused on how to dress for a luxury cruise, you’ll appreciate my advice on cruise wear for over 50 women .

Just so you know, this grand voyage was on our own dime, although Silversea kindly offered some cruise excursions and several dinners at Le Champagne, the only Relais & Château restaurant at sea.

Our favorite shoree excursions from this South Pacific cruise

Most of our shore excursions centered around fun in the warm South Pacific waters. In New Zealand and Tasmania, we enjoyed hikes and caves, not to mention the beautiful Milford Sound.

I have so much to write about this cruise that I may never be finished.  Be sure to bookmark this page or subscribe to our weekly broadcast so you’ll be the first to know!

Mt Cargill Walk in Dunedin

Alan and I chose a Mt Cargill walk in Dunedin while on a Silversea cruise around New Zealand. On long cruises, we take the opportunity to stretch our legs on land as much as we can. This New Zealand hike was a winner! Learn about our Mt Cargill Walk in Dunedin: A Hiking Cruise Excursion .

The 65-Day Cruise That Starts in Antarctica and Ends in Milwaukee

A week in Antarctica is one of the highlights of the multi-month cruises.

Courtesy of Viking Cruises

For those looking to make up for travel time lost during the pandemic, Viking Cruises might have the answer. The cruise line recently announced two all-new “longitudinal” trips—moving north to south or south to north—where guests will travel between the Great Lakes and Antarctica over the course of 65 days.

Passengers on the first sailing, called Longitudinal World Cruise I , will meet in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on March 2, 2023, before flying to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in Argentina, to board the Viking Octantis and head directly to Antarctica for a week. From there, it’s back across the Drake Passage and up the coast of Chile, where blue-tinged glaciers, dizzying fjords, and national parks are on the itinerary through the end of the first month. Then it’s onwards to Peru, Ecuador, through the Panama Canal and the Gulf of Mexico, before enjoying East Coast cities like Fort Lauderdale, Charleston, and New York City. The final two weeks explore various Canadian coastal cities on the St. Lawrence River and communities in the Great Lakes region before wrapping in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on May 5.

The second sailing (appropriately called Longitudinal World Cruise II ) is essentially the same, but in reverse and on the Octantis ’s sister ship, the Viking Polaris . The few alterations include embarkation in Duluth, Minnesota (on September 12) and some changes in the Great Lakes and Canada ports (for example, it spends time in Georgian Bay, Canada, while its predecessor visits Detroit, Michigan). The second sailing wraps up on November 12 (for those counting, that’s 71 days later).

How much the cruise costs

Fares start at $44,995 on the Longitudinal World Cruise I and $49,995 on the Longitudinal World Cruise II for the Nordic Balcony rooms, which have floor-to-ceiling windows, a king-size bed, 55-inch OLED flat-screen TV, heated floors in the bathroom, individual climate control, a mini-bar, and more. The most costly room is the Owner’s Suite ($139,995 on I and $159,995 on II), including a private garden lounge, a boardroom, a library, a guest bathroom, complimentary laundry, dry cleaning, and additional perks. Would you believe it: That suite is already sold out on each sailing.

All fares include flights to and from the ship, Wi-Fi, alcoholic beverages, 24-hour room service, and complimentary shore excursions at each port. Both ships feature four dining venues, a bar, a library, pools, spa amenities, and multiple communal spaces. They can hold a maximum of 378 guests.

Where to buy tickets

Tickets can be purchased on the Viking Expeditions website, by calling 800-381-4596, or through your travel advisor.

Other long cruises by Viking

While it’s not a short trip, it’s far from the longest out there. Viking Cruises also offers a 138-night, 28-country sailing (starting in December 2023), Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced a 150-night, 25-country trip (embarking in January 2024), and Oceania Cruises is planning a 180-night, 34-country vacation (setting sail in both January 2023 and 2024), just to name a few in the 100-plus nights range. The soon-to-be longest ever will be a Royal Caribbean sailing that departs in December 2023—it’s a 274-night adventure that will visit all seven continents and 65 countries.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Deals Guide

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the destinations you sail to and the shore excursions available at each port, to a full range of entertainment and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your experience even more all-inclusive, you can opt for beverage and specialty dining packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

I’m ready to start planning my cruise — how can I score the best deals?

Whether you’re looking to book a short getaway or a longer adventure to far-flung destinations, Royal Caribbean makes it easy to save big on everything from your cruise fare to special experiences onboard and onshore. The first step to making sure you get the best deals is to join the cruise line’s email list. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive regular updates on all the latest offers, like deals by destination , kids sail free promotions and flash sales. The savings don’t end when you book your cruise, though. Once you’ve made a reservation, you’ll also receive notifications about special offers for onboard experiences — like discounts on beverage and specialty dining packages, shore excursions, spa services, and more via My Royal Cruise .

Does it pay to plan ahead, or should I wait until the last minute?

It’s an age-old question — does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to taking a “wait-and-see” approach? If you’re booking a cruise vacation, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings , as Royal Caribbean often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in hasn’t sold out yet.

If you can be flexible when it comes to your travel dates, you’ll have your pick of unbeatable savings. Popular vacation dates — like the holidays , spring break , summer vacation and week long cruises — sometimes see the highest prices (though you might get lucky with a seasonal sale). If you have the flexibility to travel during the shoulder season or off season, you’ll likely enjoy big savings on popular stateroom categories , like Balconies and even Suites. The deals don’t only apply to your cruise fare, though. Once you’ve booked your vacation, you could easily unlock discounts and specials on add-ons, including beverage and dining packages , Voom® high speed internet, shore excursions, and amazing experiences not included in your cruise fare — like a day of pampering at Vitality SM Spa, a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship’s galley followed by brunch, VIP seating at shows, and much more.

How can I maximize the value of my cruise vacation?

There are plenty of ways to get more bang for your buck when you sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Every ship in the fleet offers a range of delicious complimentary dining options , but you can dig into even more crave-worthy flavor by purchasing a Specialty Dining Package for less ahead of your cruise. Add a Specialty Beverage Package — which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages, soda, and more — and your experience is as close to all-inclusive as it gets. And with so many complimentary shows and attractions onboard, you can easily fill every sea day without spending a single dollar extra.

Royal Caribbean also offers deals based on departure ports  and destinations, so if you’re a flexible traveler looking for great savings, you can plan your next vacation around which itineraries are on sale. Just check your email or visit RoyalCaribbean.com/cruise-deals to stay up to date on promotions, sales and special offers. You can even browse sailings and deals by homeport, destination and season, so you can rest assured you’re getting the best possible deal no matter when or where in the world you choose to set sai.

Sail on all four Queens of Cunard – 57 nights from $18,999 per person

Brand new and exclusive to imagine holidays – four queens of cunard discovery voyage to sydney including hotel stays in new york, london, barcelona, rome and san francisco., imagine holidays   have gone above and beyond in their response, hand-selecting cunard’s royal fleet: queen mary 2, queen anne, queen victoria , and queen elizabeth , with a once-in-a-lifetime 57-night regal voyage experience across 18 destinations, and 6 continents, including connecting flights and hotel stays in five of the world’s most iconic cities. .

Begin your regal expedition by doing New York, Meghan, and Harry style – back when they were keen to be seen exploring the bustling Big Apple’s endless supply of the world’s best fashion, art, sites, and sensations – with a two-night stay at the Westin New York Grand Central.

64 day cruise

Avoid getting too held up by the paparazzi, as your first royal engagement eagerly awaits your arrival –   Cunard’s illustrious flagship, Queen Mary 2 . An exquisite traditional afternoon tea served by white-gloved waiter-servers in the ‘Queens Rooms’ awaits, followed by your choice of a leisurely stroll through a luxury boutique and fine art gallery, or even trying your hand at a spot of croquet or fencing.

Enjoy marvellous entertainment at the Royal Court Theatre and take in the amenities, as you begin a six-night venture to the motherland aboard one of the most magnificent ocean liners ever to grace transatlantic waters, before arriving in England’s maritime Southampton.

Disembark with a royal wave as you transfer to the motherland’s capital for a two-night  stay in London, and explore everything from Big Ben to Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London’s Crown Jewels.

London

Once you’ve experienced your first viewing at Buckingham Palace, prepare for your next Changing of the Guard as you prepare to meet Cunard’s youngest monarch, Queen Anne , who is eagerly awaiting your arrival to join her on a royal tour of the magnificent Norwegian Fjords. Fly from London to Barcelona and explore the   rich tapestry of attractions Barcelona has in store: from the spicy tapas of La Rambla, to the picturesque Picasso Museum.

From here, get ready to embark on a ship as powerful and rich in culture as her empire at the time – Cunard’s Queen Victoria as she sets sail through the Western Mediterranean. Enjoy a sumptuous seven-night cruise where you can enjoy a proud march down the Royal Arcade or unwind in decadent, relaxed pampering – with the opportunity to uncover the marvellous beauty and history of Sardinia, Ajaccio, Sicily, and Naples, before landing in the city that was definitely not built in a day—so luckily, you’ll have a three-night stay—to explore the ancient city of Rome.

The ancient ruins of Rome

Ahead of your final royal endeavour, be whisked away to explore America the San Francisco way, with a three-night view of the city’s skyline at the Stanford Court Hotel.

At last, it’s time to meet the queen of hearts, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth  on the final leg of your royal voyage. Enjoy themed gala events, and a masquerade ball, and an impressive orchestra, with an unforgettable 25-night discovery via Apia, the Bay of Islands, and overnights in Honolulu and Auckland.

From New York to Rome, and old London town… still call Australia home with a final port of call Melbourne ahead of disembarking in Sydney. The Royal treatment, indeed!
