Alaska cruise wedding

Wondering how to make your wedding a little more special? Then look no further than an Alaska cruise wedding.

Surrounded by glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and lush wilderness, Alaska will make any wedding that much more memorable.

Not only will your wedding ceremony be totally unique and unforgettable, but you can literally start your honeymoon straight away without wasting any time.

Luckily, there are quite a few Alaska cruise lines that offer wedding packages. This means you don't have to worry about planning the wedding and catering, just let the operator handle the details. This will make your journey far less stressful and allow you time to enjoy the things that matter.

Below are the best cruise lines for an Alaska cruise wedding package. If you want to make your trip even more special, consider taking an Alaska cruise tour .

 Alaska Cruise Wedding: The Options

Princess cruises.

Princess are well known for their weddings thanks to their "Tie the Knot" packages available on all of their ships , including in Alaska.

There are three package options that vary in price from $2,000 - $5,000 depending on your needs. You can choose to have your wedding at sea, on-shore, or on the ship when it is in port. The later two options give your friends and family a chance to join whilst not actually taking the cruise itself.

The packages include being married by the captain, a wedding cake, floral decorations, photographer, wedding planner, a bottle of champagne, a beautiful breakfast, and rose petals on the bed at turn-down.

Almost all Princess ships have dedicated wedding chapels aboard which really help to make the ceremony that much more special. These can also broadcast your wedding live via webcam to your family and friends who could not make it.

  • Dedicated chapel
  • 3 packages to choose from
  • Live broadcast
  • The captain conducts the ceremony
  • Well priced
  • Licensing fees generally add another $500 to the quoted price

Celebrity Cruises

Not only can Celebrity cruises now marry you at sea, but they can also marry same-sex couples. The "Nautical Nuptials at Sea" package is conducted by the captain and prices start from around $3,000. There is also the option of a shoreside package that costs a little less, but the captain does not preside over the ceremony.

Most weddings on Celebrity Cruises include an event coordinator's services, photographer, a bottle of Champagne, cake for two, bouquet, and a romantic turn-down setting.

If getting married at sea, make sure to book early as the captain will need to be free to perform the nuptials. You can also book a 'symbolic wedding package' which costs less and is not legally binding.

  • Captain presides over the ceremony
  • Romantic turn-down service
  • His and Her robes included
  • License fee of $750 not included
  • Full wedding cake not included

Holland America Cruises

Catering to an older and more sophisticated clientele, Holland America is ideal for older couples looking to tie the knot. Most of Holland America's ships come with dedicated chapels, making weddings very easy.

Although there are no sea weddings or shoreside weddings available in Alaska, Holland America offer an in-port wedding option in Juneau. If you want to make the ceremony truly special, Holland America offer packages in which you can get married on a glacier! Not many people can say that.

If 8 of your guests book staterooms then Holland America will upgrade the wedding couple to a stateroom free of charge and a commemorative wedding cake. The group will also get a free lunch and private wine tasting and chocolate-covered strawberries session.

  • Nice, refined feeling
  • Get married on a glacier
  • Can't be married at sea
  • Can't be married in port (in Alaska)

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian are great for Alaska cruise weddings because they offer fully customisable packages that will make your day really stand out. For instance, you can choose to have a custom ordered flowers, live music, conch shell aisle, fresh rose arch, and cold hors d'oeuvres. These all come at an extra cost, but it's good to know they are available if wanted.

Onboard you'll find plenty of dining options and numerous spa and beauty services. Norwegian also offer same-sex weddings and the captain presides over the ceremony (this is not always the case and does depend on the ship).

The standard at sea package starts from $2,995 and comes with a 6-inch cake, bridal bouquet, chocolate-covered strawberries, prosecco, dinner for two, photographer, and canapés.

If you want the real special 'wow' wedding, Norwegian offer ceremonies on Juneau Glacier.

  • Very customisable
  • Same-sex weddings
  • Captain officiates the ceremony
  • A fee of $250 is charged for every 25 guests over the initial 25
  • License fees not included

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean are another great option when it comes to Alaska cruise weddings. You can do the fabulous glacier wedding option in Juneau or choose to have your special nautical nuptials at sea.

The cheapest option is to get married at sea which starts at $1,950 and includes up to 10 guests. For a full blown glacier wedding with 50 guests, you're looking at  $4,650 depending on the month.

A decorated stateroom and three-tier cake makes Royal Caribbean weddings very special. You also get champagne, dinner for two, photographer, breakfast in bed, and wedding coordinator as standard. At an extra cost, open bars and hors d'oeuvres can be arranged for the after-party.

  • Lots of packages
  • License fee not included
  • Not the best option for people wanting to just relax

How to Plan Your Dream Alaskan Cruise Wedding

Having breakfast and reading on the balcony of your Alaskan cruise wedding

Right off the bat here, let me say that I have personally been on cruises around the world. Australia, Mediterranean, Caribbean, you name it. That said, Seattle is right here in my backyard and one of the most scenic cruises in the world departs just 20 minutes from my front door. That’s right, an Alaskan cruise.

After being a wedding photographer for over 13 years now, I am incredibly selective on the weddings that I choose to bring on since I only photograph a few per year now.

One of the types of weddings that I reserve myself for is an Alaskan cruise wedding.

Why? Well, simply put – it blends my three favorite things.

  • Traveling via a stunning cruise that is conveniently located right next to me
  • The PNW aesthetic with water, trees, and the smell of the ocean
  • Photographing incredible people while having a heck of a fun time

Let’s now dig into planning that Alaskan cruise wedding of yours, shall we?

Table of Contents

Choosing the Right Cruise Line

Before you set sail into the Alaskan wilderness, you must select the perfect cruise line to host your wedding. Here are some essential factors to consider:

  • Research different cruise lines offering wedding packages in Alaska.
  • Look into the ship’s amenities, on-board entertainment, and dining options.
  • Read reviews and testimonials from couples who have had their weddings on the cruise line of your choice.

Selecting the Ideal Itinerary

Alaska offers a myriad of stunning destinations to tie the knot. Consider the following when planning your cruise itinerary:

  • Glacier Bay: Witness awe-inspiring glaciers and towering fjords for a truly majestic experience.
  • Juneau: Alaska’s capital city offers a blend of urban amenities and breathtaking natural beauty.
  • Skagway: Embrace the charm of a historic gold rush town amidst picturesque landscapes.
  • Inside Passage: Do it.
  • Balcony Statement: An absolute must.
  • Seattle departure: I’m biased here since I live just outside of Seattle, but still recommend it, especially if you are American yourself.

Nailing the Perfect Time of Year

Alaska’s cruising season typically runs from May to September, with each month offering a unique experience:

  • May: Spring blooms and potential wildlife sightings. Weather is traditionally a bit cooler and glaciers with more fresh pack.
  • June to July: Peak season for wildlife viewing, including whales and bears.
  • August to September: Fall foliage and a chance to witness the Northern Lights.

Wedding Packages and Legalities

Ensure you understand the cruise line’s wedding packages and any legal requirements for getting married at sea:

  • Obtain necessary marriage licenses and documentation. Speak with your cruise planner or wedding planner about this ahead of time.
  • Customize your wedding package with add-ons like floral arrangements, photography , and live music.
  • As a pro tip, don’t just go with what is conveniently available onboard with your photography. Get an experienced wedding photographer who specializes in things like this to help ensure you get the best result possible. Moreover, get a wedding photographer with a style that you absolutely love and a personality that will help you have the most fun ever. (Hi, let’s chat)

Inviting Your Guests

Inform your guests well in advance about your cruise wedding plans:

  • Send out “Save the Date” cards or digital invites to give guests ample time to plan and prepare.
  • After those are sent out, you should also send formal invitations with more details after you figure those out.
  • Consider group rates or assistance from the cruise line in organizing travel arrangements for your guests.

FAQs: Alaskan Cruise Weddings Unraveled!

Which cruise line should i choose for my alaskan wedding/elopement.

Genuinely, it really depends on your desired experience while you are on the cruise itself. Are you wanting more opulent elegance or something more fun and energetic? They don’t always go hand-in-hand on the same cruise line.

  • Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) has always been a fantastic operation and we’ve enjoyed our experiences with them in the past.
  • Royal Caribbean’s ships are absolutely fantastic, and something I would highly recommend.
  • Holland America’s ships are known to a bit more elegant & opulent, and therefore traditionally cater to a bit older audience who is looking for more peace and serenity during their vacation.
  • Princess Cruises are very nice as well, but typically also cater to a bit older of an age group (in our experience).
  • Disney Cruises are definitely meant for more families and their kids, but after having been on a Disney cruise myself (to photograph a wedding), there are still plenty of adult activities available, and the food is delicious.

Can I have a religious ceremony on a cruise ship?

Absolutely! Many cruise lines can accommodate religious ceremonies or provide a suitable space for your spiritual needs.

What about the reception and catering?

Cruise lines offer various options for reception venues and catering services. You can tailor the menu to your liking, whether you desire a lavish feast or an intimate dinner.

Will the cruise line help with wedding photography and videography?

Yes, most cruise lines provide photography and videography services to capture your precious moments. However, you can also hire an external photographer if you prefer (which is what I recommend that you do). I would love to be there for you, and I can bring my many years of experience to your special day.

Are Alaskan cruise weddings budget-friendly?

Alaskan cruise weddings can be surprisingly cost-effective, especially when compared to traditional weddings. The all-inclusive packages often cover essential wedding elements, making it easier to budget. Just imagine the catering bill from a traditional wedding by itself, let alone the venue rental or anything else.

What I highly encourage you to consider is having an intimate wedding with your closest friends and family (or just you and your immediate family) and keep things small. It will make your onboard experience fun, tightly knit, and excursions are easier to manage with your smaller guest count as well. Everything logistically just becomes simpler.

Can we explore Alaskan ports with our guests after the wedding?

Absolutely! After your wedding ceremony, you and your guests can explore different Alaskan ports, participate in shore excursions, and create lifelong memories together. And in fact, that is what I highly encourage that you do! Just also be sure to plan for some real downtime, too.

I know how exciting it can be to plan your cruise and go on every excursion that you can, but there is real value in just relaxing. And depending on the port, you might just be able to walk into town without an official excursion. Food for thought!

Conclusion: Anchoring your love in the arctic wilderness with an Alaskan cruise wedding!

And there you have it, lovebirds – the ultimate guide for an Alaskan cruise wedding, designed to help you embark on an extraordinary journey of love and adventure. Picture yourselves saying “I do” against the backdrop of calving glaciers, surrounded by the wonders of nature.

An Alaskan cruise wedding offers an experience like no other, blending romance, adventure, and stunning scenery into one unforgettable celebration. From choosing the right cruise line to exploring Alaskan ports with your loved ones, your wedding voyage promises to be an enchanting and intimate experience.

So, if you’re ready to make your dream wedding come true, set sail for the untamed beauty of Alaska’s icy seas and let your love story be etched in the glaciers of time! Bon voyage, and may your love shine as bright as the Northern Lights!

Please let me know if you make your Alaskan cruise wedding or elopement official. Bonus points if your cruise departs out of Seattle and you take the inside passage. I would absolutely love to be your cruise wedding photographer. Let’s have the best time ever!

How to Plan an Unforgettable Glacier Wedding in Alaska

While countless couples planning outdoor weddings choose a quintessential sandy beach lapped by azure waters to tie the knot, those who are drawn to scenery like majestic mountains, forests, jewel-like lakes, and glistening glaciers, might want to consider Alaska. The 49th state is the ultimate place for adventurers and with its abundant wildlife, there might be a bald eagle soaring above as you say your “I dos.”

A glacier wedding in Alaska is the ultimate when it comes to unique ceremonies with a stunning setting that perfectly complements the beauty of your love. Just imagine the photos of you two surrounded by massive sheets of blue-tinged ice in a remote location where you’ll have the spot all to yourselves. Glaciers are especially good for romantic elopements with total privacy for you and your beloved.

The Location

Alaska is the biggest state in the U.S. by far, covering over 1.7 million miles with tens of thousands of glaciers. That means you’ll have lots of options for your glacier wedding, which may feel overwhelming.

We recommend choosing a glacier near Girdwood. This picturesque mountain town is less than an hour from Anchorage International Airport, making it easy to reach while providing access to glaciers that will make you feel as if you’re in an entirely different world. From local shopping and food to wilderness adventures, there’s so much to do in Girdwood . Your and your wedding party will have no shortage of excitement before, during, and after your glacier wedding plans!

Plus, it’s home to one of the best outfitters in Alaska to get you to the glacier. At Alpine Air, we have decades of experience helping countless couples take engagement photos or make their wedding dreams come true.

A Helicopter Ride

While it’s possible to access some glaciers on foot or by water , flying there via helicopter is best. Getting there will be part of the excitement, with the chance to gaze down at some of the world’s most jaw-dropping scenery while watching for wildlife like bears and moose. It’s an epic journey that provides the perfect setup to your ceremony without dirtying your appearance. Those wedding clothes can stay as pristine as the wild landscapes below.

Your Wedding Party

Helicopters are the best way to have your wedding on a glacier, surrounded by some of the most surreal natural beauty, but it does limit the number of people you can bring with you. Still, the intimacy and romance of a small group is hard to beat, and you don’t have to do it alone.

With Alpine Air Alaska, you can arrange to bring up to six passengers. This typically includes the happy couple, an officiant, a photographer, and two of your closest friends, family members, or anyone else you choose. It’s absolutely perfect for elopements and there will be no worries about pleasing dozens or even hundreds of guests, making it blissfully stress-free.

The Reception

After sharing your wedding vows on the glacier and making it official in a private ceremony, you can hold a reception for a larger group back in Girdwood. Some of the best venue options include:

  • Alyeska Resort . This renowned property blends Native influences with modern amenities and preeminent comfort, making it ideal for any of your wedding dreams. The location offers lodging options for large guest lists and a reception area with expansive indoor and outdoor venues. There are nine different spaces, ranging from intimate areas that can accommodate 55 guests as well as larger spaces that can comfortably fit 200. Catering services include a wide array of food choices and there are salon services on-site that make it easy to create an ideal look for your ceremony.
  • Bison Hall at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center . This new venue can be ideal for a reception with an excellent management team. It’s a picturesque, barn-like building with high vaulted ceilings, wooden beams, a moose antler chandelier, and large windows for lots of natural light. Plus, you’ll be in a spectacular setting that includes lots of animals like bison, bears, caribou, moose, and wolves.
  • Jack Sprat Restaurant . Jack Sprat is an outstanding venue for your rehearsal. You can rent the entire restaurant (or a small part) for your reception, complete with a four-course personalized menu featuring local, fresh, sustainably sourced foods.

Plan Your Unforgettable Glacier Wedding in Alaska

Alpine Air Alaska is the longest-running helicopter service in the Girdwood area, with an extensive safety record and unmatched customer service that’s led to our stellar reputation. With that kind of track record, you know your glacier wedding in Alaska is going to be everything you’ve dreamed of.

Our highly experienced pilots have taken many couples to embark on their adventures of a lifetime. Glacier Helicopter Weddings

The ultimate Alaska wedding experience! Hop aboard a helicopter and be whisked away to a deep blue glacial pool, surrounded by towering blocks of ice hundreds of feet high. You will feel the cool down-glacier winds as soon you exit the helicopter, and realize you’ve never seen anything like this in your life. It really is spectacular, and there is no way these photos do the experience justice. We’ll just help you remember it better. These Alaska glacier weddings and elopements are truly unique – we promise you’ll have a hard time finding anything like this in the lower 48! When planning a destination wedding in Alaska, if your group is small, this should be at the top of your list. The companies we work with are top notch – safety is an obsession for them and that is why we choose to partner with them. We are happy to help you with the logistics of setting this up, and make suggestions on where to go for the perfect ceremony and photo spot. No two glaciers are the same, and we have many to choose from. We can help you pick a spot that fits your exact preferences, weather permitting of course. In addition to the glacier landing, we may also stop at a mountaintop ridge or flowery meadow on our way back. You’ll see some of those photos mixed in below. We love to combine these spots as a supplement to a Rainforest and Waterfall Wedding  or our Rocky Coastal Oceanside Weddings . It really is possible to do all of them in one day! Imagine combining glaciers, mountains, waterfalls, oceans, whales, rainforests, all in one day! It’s possible – check out our Destination Wedding Portfolios for examples!

Hubbard Glacier, Alaska

VIEWS OF GLACIAL PROPORTIONS

With its winding fjords and gigantic glaciers, the best Alaska glaciers cruises offer unforgettable views. Spot silly seals playing on bobbing icebergs, or simply take in the vibrancy of the turquoise waters. These memories are sure to last a lifetime.

Alaska, Wide Angle View of Glacier

LIVE THE WILD LIFE

Endicott Arm Fjord Glacier  is less frequently visited than its sister Tracy Arm, but its secluded nature only adds to its appeal. Catch a glimpse of imposing Dawes Glacier: It's actually formed by two glaciers meeting, one of which features an impressive icefall, a crevasse that looks like a frozen waterfall, into the fjord below. You're sure to see roaming wildlife here: Watch the waters for seals and sea otters, or look to the skies for a glimpse of soaring bald eagles.

Juneau, Alaska Trees by Lake

FJORD THE TURQUOISE WATERS

As glaciers move, they grind the earth to flour that turns the waters that wind through the fjords a gorgeous opaque turquoise color. Take an excursion or tour through the water-filled valleys of Mendenhall Glacier to bathe in the light that reflects off of the compressed ice. You can kayak through Mendenhall Lake, which is actually created by the melting waters of the 3,000-year-old glacier.

Alaska, Glacier with Pine Trees

ICE, ICE, BABY!

Age-old glaciers like Dawes or Mendenhall give way to meandering fjords all throughout  Alaska . Kayak through the icy waters and catch a glimpse of the grazing caribou and the leaping mountain goats who frequent the massive mountains of ice.

Spencer Glacier, Alaska Red Kayak

ICY EXPEDITIONS

Sometimes, you want to relax and take in the views. Other times, you might prefer to take advantage of the thrilling adventures an area has to offer. With an Alaska glaciers vacation, you can do both at the same time.

Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska Dog Sled

TAKE A PAWS

A thrilling helicopter ride tour can transport you to the Norris Glacier on the Juneau Icefield. Meet with professional mushers and their spirited dogs for an  unforgettable dog-sledding adventure  of ancient proportions: Archaeological evidence suggests the Inuit have been getting around via dog sled since around 1,000 A.D.

Mount Delani, Alaska Aerial View

GLACIER SIGHT-SOARING

Generally, Alaska glaciers are viewed from one angle, so you can see that they are massive, but flightseeing — taking a small, low-flying plane over the landscape for a true bird's-eye view — allows you to see just how vast these rivers of ice can be. Take up an excursion out of Misty Fjord in Ketchikan, or soar above the massive Denali mountain with a Talkeetna adventure tour group. You may even get the chance to climb one of these icy giants.

Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska Ice Cave

THE CAVERNS ARE CALLING

There's nothing quite like experiencing a glacier from the inside. Venture into Mendenhall Ice Caves or Matanuska Glacier Cave to see stunning views of intensely compressed ice — it's an otherworldly experience of actually standing underneath the glacial ice, which forms surreal landscapes like you've never seen before.

How to Get Married on a Glacier in Alaska from a Cruise

Steve and I dated for a year, then got engaged for a year, and then planned our wedding. For our fifth wedding (third for him, second for me) we refused to do things the way everyone else does, and we decided to get married in Alaska on a glacier. So how could we take an Alaskan cruise and get married? Could we get married on the Alaskan cruise? Could the cruise take us to a glacier to get married on an Alaskan glacier?

How and why did we decide on a getting married on a glacier in Alaska?

The conversation basically went like this:

1. We didn’t want a big, white wedding. 2. If we were going to spend a bucket of money, we wanted to have fun–we didn’t want to buy steak and drinks for 200 of our closest friends. 3. We, in our true form, wanted to do something different.

Getting Married on an Alaskan Cruise with Kids

With one kid, one teen, and one young adult, ages 8-22, in tow, putting together a wedding that made sense and covered the top three criteria, challenged us. An Alaskan cruise seemed like the ideal way to enjoy a family wedding as a destination.

Living in Florida, we knew cruising out of one of the local ports would made sense. But cruising from Florida didn’t pass number three’s muster. We had all done a Florida cruise, and for any guests who might come, most of them had done a Florida cruise as well. Thus, we settled on a cruise but not a location. Thus, Alaska! Only I had been to Alaska. No one else in the wedding party had been to Alaska. It just started to make sense to cruise Alaska.

Getting Married on a Cruise to Alaska

We really wanted to get married on the cruise boat by the captain of the boat, and we discovered only two cruise lines (Norwegian and Princess) would perform weddings while sailing. Most of the cruise ships wanted us to get married while docked. When you get married while docked, you have to get a marriage license in the country of the dock. Figuring out how to get a marriage license in, say, The Bahamas, got complicated quickly. Additionally, after investigating cruise ship weddings a bit further, we found out it would cost $2500 for the captain to walk down off the bridge to say our vows.

Seriously, $2500? What else could we do for $2500?

A Wedding Planner, Limo Driver, Justice of the Peace, and Photographer in Alaska

After some quick googling, we found Tom in Juneau . For the same price as the captain of our ship, Tom (our new wedding planner in Alaska!) would find us a helicopter, a limo, an officiant, some flowers, a photographer, some champagne and a glacier! So, we booked a wedding special with him, where we will get married on top of the Mendenhall Glacier.

Tom met us at the cruise ship terminal in a limo, took us to the local county recorder to get our Alaskan marriage license, drove us to the Juneau heliport, accompanied us in the helicopter to Mendenhall glacier, delivered flowers, performed the ceremony, took pictures, poured champagne, flew us back to the heliport, drove us back to the boat, and said good-bye all within our four hours docked in Juneau. We got married in four hours in Alaska. It was a magical, easy, perfect glacier wedding in Alaska and many years later, still a fabulous decision I’d repeat.

You're guaranteed to see a glacier on these Alaska cruises – or you get a credit

alaska glacier wedding cruise

Glaciers are a major draw for many Alaska cruise passengers. But on the chance you don’t see one as advertised during your voyage, Holland America Line will give you money back.

The cruise line is adding a Glacier Guarantee for its cruises and cruisetours around the Last Frontier through September 2025. If Holland America doesn’t visit one it planned to, passengers will get a future cruise credit worth 15% of their fare.

"Our guests, and especially first-time guests, are understandably as obsessed with Alaska's glaciers as we are, and our new Glacier Guarantee underlines our confidence in providing unforgettable glacier sightings on our Alaska cruises and Cruisetours," Kacy Cole, the line’s chief marketing officer, said in a news release . "We know our guests are going to return home from their cruise with special memories of these icy wonders. In fact, we guarantee it."

What are the terms of Holland America’s Glacier Guarantee?

The guarantee applies when a visit to a glacier – think scenic cruising to Dawes Glacier – on a published itinerary is canceled, according to its terms and conditions . Guests must be at least 21 years old and complete a form within 30 days of their trip ending in order to claim the credit. Credits are limited to one per guest.

The offer is available to passengers who complete their cruise or cruisetour between May and September of 2024 or 2025.

Northern Lights Promise: If you don't see the northern lights from these cruises, you'll get a free trip

The guarantee will not apply when only one of multiple glacier visits on a cruise or cruisetour has been canceled, and select Yukon cruisetours are ineligible.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. , (May 1, 2024) – The dreamlike images of green and purple lights swirling in the northern sky, known as the Aurora Borealis or "Northern Lights," is an unforgettable spectacle, and something all guests sailing this summer with Princess Cruises to Alaska are guaranteed to see.

This new immersive Voyage to the Stars experience is part of the cruise line’s award-winning North to Alaska with Princess program set to debut for the upcoming 2024 cruise and cruisetour season that strengthens the overall guest connection in the Great Land. This year Princess guests will step inside a planetarium in the Princess Theater for a front row seat to the “Northern Lights” presentation showcasing the beauty and wonder of this phenomenon featuring live imagery, designed to engage adults and kids alike.

“Each season in Alaska we strive to deliver enriching experiences for our guests to feel immersed in the beauty and local culture of this spectacular destination,” said Terry Thornton, chief commercial officer of Princess Cruises. “After receiving our highest guest satisfaction ranking ever last season, we knew we wanted to design elevated programming to further connect our guests to all of the wonders of the 49th state for our 55th anniversary season.”

The 2024 season promises to be the biggest and best ever for Princess with 158 departures on 14 unique itineraries with 17 destinations, including five glacier viewing experiences on seven stunning ships.
