A Montana Experience

The thrill of the chase.

Hunting with Swan Mountain Outfitters is always free chase. While we employ highly skilled and experienced guides, these wilderness big game hunts are very challenging and do not carry guarantees of the harvesting of game. If the thought of going home without of an animal is not palatable to you, do not book a hunt!

Where We Hunt

Swan Mountain Outfitters is fortunate to have, based on our hunting permits, access to thousands of acres of the Flathead National Forest, in and around the famed Bob Marshall Wilderness. While this hunting area in Montana is open to resident hunters, few choose to pack into the wilderness or leave the valley floor, leaving our guides to help you explore a rich stock of wildlife and vast hunting terrain.

Swan Mountain Outfitters operates our hunting trips under permits from the U.S. Forest Service and State of Montana DNRC. We operate on public land. All hunts are conducted under the Outfitter’s License (#34041) of Patrick Tabor.

What We Target

  • Whitetail Deer
  • Black Bear (spring and fall)
  • Mountain Lion (winter)
  • Archery Elk & Whitetail Deer hunts
  • Multi Weapon
  • Combination big game hunts
  • Mountain Goat**

* *Swan Mountain Outfitters offers Moose and Mountain Goat backcountry hunts in Hunting Districts #130 and #150. The permits are available by special limited drawing with an application deadline of May 1 st each year. The season runs September 15 th – November 29th. Drawing a tag is a challenging process and if you are lucky enough to get one it will be a ‘once in a lifetime’ hunt. Please contact us for more details on how our guides can help you achieve your dream harvest of a moose or mountain goat on one of our backcountry hunts on horseback with Swan Mountain Outfitters.

For more details on hunts by species, make sure to scroll all the way down this page where we can address each in greater detail. First though, read through the next “know before you go” section to make sure we are the right outfitter for you.

Know Before you Go

At Swan Mountain Outfitters we are committed to providing a quality guided mountain horseback hunt experience. We want our hunters to fully understand the nature and difficulty of our hunts. Call us old fashioned, but we believe in an honest and upfront approach, no surprises. So here’s what you need to know before you go!

Trophy Hunts

Unlike private land or fenced hunts which allow outfitters exclusive access to trophy sized animals, we lack control over the size of the animals we encounter. To be sure, we have harvested very admirable size animals in each species we pursue, but we consider a every harvest a “trophy” of the hard work put in to achieve it. If you anticipate being dissatisfied with anything less than a trophy size, we’re probably not the outfitter for you. For us, it’s all about the thrill of the chase!

Hunt Format

Our hunts are free chase hunts conducted on public land in the Flathead National Forest as well as in and around the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. While a private land hunt carries a higher level of assurance of seeing and harvesting game, the reality of hunting public land is that it harder. There is a chance you may not see an animal during your hunt. We do our best by employing a team of knowledgeable and professional guides, using best in class equipment and stock, and possessing a strong understanding of our permitted hunting territory and animal movement patterns.

Success Rates

It seems that the most commonly asked question is, “What is your success rate?” There is widespread debate as to how outfitters calculate success; is it kill? opportunity? sightings? All outfitters, including us, can cite statistics of past seasons; however, we have found it to be a poor predictor of a particular hunter’s odds for harvest success. If your measure of success is a harvest, the reality of any public land hunt is there are NO guarantees. Before you reserve your hunt, please carefully consider if going home without an animal would negatively impact your experience.

Physical Rigor

Are you prepared mentally and physically for a free chase hunt in the mountains of Montana? Our hunting territory encompasses steep, rugged terrain. On average hunters can expect to ride up to 5 hours in the saddle and hike 10 miles per day. Hiking and riding times will vary with each hunt. For example, hunters after mule deer may spend 7 to 10 hours riding if we lack the snow to push them down from the mountain tops. You do not need to be an expert horseman, but you do need to be prepared to spend a lot of time in the saddle. We highly recommend hunters practice their still-hunting, hit the gym, and build saddle stamina before the trip. Having the physical ability to go where the animals are is a huge factor in a successful hunt.

Weather Patterns

We are located in the Rocky Mountains of Northwest Montana. Weather can change quickly and can greatly impact the success on any hunt. Weather conditions are unpredictable and out of our control. The temperature can vary from -20 to 70 degrees so it is important you prepare for the extremes. It’s simply the nature of the beast, and as such we do not issue any refunds due to inclement weather.

Accommodations

Life in an outfitting camp lacks modern amenities like flush toilets and electricity, but we view this as part of the authentic experience of a wilderness hunt! Depending on the areas to be accessed, hunters may stay in a base camp, upper camp, or spike camps. Base camp can be accessed by dirt road and hunters stay in wall tents with a woodstove. Base camp is used as a launch point for early season hunts, hosts the duration of the late season ungulate hunting, and hosts bear hunts. Upper camp is a day’s ride from base camp, accessed only by foot or hoof, and completely lacks electricity but still features wall tents with wood stoves. Upper camp is often used in early and mid season ungulate hunts. Spike camps are used to get even deeper into the wilderness and utilize alpine tents lacking a woodstove. Spike camps are used in archery elk hunts and the opening week of general season. Our base camp and upper camp feature dedicated camp cooks and meals are served family style at the table. In spike camps, how you prepare and structure meals is simply up to you and your guide. No matter the kitchen amenities, we’ll make sure you are well fed! We never underestimate the importance of good food on a rigorous hunt.

Additional Fees

In addition to the cost of the hunt, hunters should be financially prepared for additional expenses such as:

  • Licenses: license rates are determined by Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and they can change year to year. Depending on your target species, could cost an additional $300-$1,500. We will update license rates in our rates section for your convenience.
  • Gratuity: You are supported on your hunt by a fantastic team. What feels appropriate to tip is something you’ll consider at the end of your hunt. You might budget a tip for your guide to be $50 a day or 10-15% of the hunt cost. For a cook, camp jack, or packer you might consider $15-25 per day. What we can say with certainty is that staff are always greatly appreciative of tips.
  • $95 transportation to/from Glacier International Airport or other Kalispell location
  • $120 transportation to/from Missoula International Airport or other Missoula location
  • A Hunter Defense Fund: A fee of $50 per hunter is collected from all outfitted clients of Outfitter members of the Montana Outfitter & Guides Association for the purposes of defending nonresident hunting rights in the state of Montana.
  • Processing the meat: elk: $275, deer: $100, Bear: $85-$100 or up to $300 if you go to a smoke house
  • Taxidermy: We can recommend a local taxidermist who can ship to you upon completion. His prices are competitive with those throughout the country.
  • Shipping the meat, cape and antlers: $100-300 on average, depending on the butcher, weight, and destination. If you harvest and do not want the meat you can donate it to us for no cost.

MONTANA HUNTING TRIPS

Sun Canyon Lodge and Outfitting in north-central Montana is nestled in the Rocky Mountain Front with the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex at our back door. You are able to access our Lodge by road or fly into Great Falls and we will come and pick you up.

We have three back-country camps that are accessed by horseback. Our  main elk camps  are located six to eight hours into the Wilderness.

Once there, you will be staying in very comfortable tent camps. The sleeping tents are 14 foot by 16 foot, equipped with cots and wood stoves. Family style meals will be prepared in a well furnished mess tent that is separate from all sleeping tents.

Our mule deer camp is located seven miles into the Lewis and Clark National Forest. This camp is also set up similar to the Wilderness elk hunting camps. All three camps are set up early enabling them to be established and ready to go when you get here.

Our hunting season begins with archery in the first week of September and runs through the third week of October. Depending on your hunting preference, we will use spot and stock, calling, and tree stands.

Then rifle season starts the end of October and runs through the end of November. It is a five week season.

Then, Deer and elk season run concurrently, so you are able to harvest both species in the same week.

All of our hunts are deer and elk hunts with your choice of a whitetail or mule deer. These hunts are first-class; including the food, the cook, two hunters per guide, a camp-tender and appropriate stock. Hunters must only bring their personal gear and weapon of choice.

Our  main elk camps  are located in the river drainage situated next to the Sun River Game Preserve. At an elevation of 5,000-6,000 feet, it makes for some of the easiest and finest elk hunting available. The mule deer camp offers great high-country mule deer hunting in both their summer and winter range with the chance of migratory elk.

If you are not feeling up to a back-country excursion, then opt for a Lodge Hunt for elk with the choice of hunting whitetail or mule deer. This is a great trip for a father/son or husband/wife team. After a long day of hunting, enjoy cabin accommodations and take your meals in our Lodge. Hunt on horseback and in four wheel drives.

  • We will personalize your hunt based on your preferences (style and capability).
  • In the last 30 years, we have averaged 40% success on elk harvest and 80% on deer.
  • We are well established and have been hunting the same area since 1983.
  • Our area allows either sex elk, both sex whitetail deer and buck mule deer.

Archery Hunting

Archery hunting starts in early September and runs late into October. This is the season of rut for bull elk. There are very few thrills equal to the sound and sight of an enraged bull elk as he answers the challenge of an experienced bugler. Bringing him in close for a good clean shot is very important.

While hunting your”Pope and Young Trophy” bull, you will be hunting in an area that also allows the hunting of deer and bear.

The weather in September is usually beautiful with clear bright days and crisp cool nights. Later in October there is a possibility of snow at anytime.

We take bow hunters into our camp for eight day hunts. These hunts fill fast so we encourage you to book early.

General Rifle Season

Regular rifle season usually opens the last Sunday in October and runs through November. Our main camps for regular season are Cabin Creek and Lynx Creek – both are located in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, up the North Fork of the Sun River in area 442. This season allows the hunting of cow as well as bull elk, along with deer and black bear in the area. Our base camps are very comfortable with ranch-style type meals prepared by the best of cooks. The sleeping tents are furnished with cots and wood stoves. A 1st class hunt from these camps will provide one guide for every two hunters, horses and meals. All you bring is your personal gear and rifle. Camps are limited to six hunters a week, maximizing your hunting experience.

Lodge Hunts

Hunt from the lodge for mule deer, white tail deer and elk! Package price includes: lodging (cabins) beginning with a cabin the night prior to your hunt; meals, beginning with breakfast on the first day of your hunt and concluding with a steak dinner on the last night of your hunt; one guide per group (4 maximum); horses as needed; packing game to the lodge or meat processor in Augusta (meat processing fees and gratuities not included); pick up and delivery to the Great Falls airport. All hunts during the general season are five days, Monday through Friday.

We do offer drop camps. You may bring your gear and we will pack it in, or use our equipment. Please call for specific details and date availability. We reserve a cabin for you the night before your hunt; however, that is not covered in your drop camp fee. Please pay for the cabin when you arrive. If you would like a lunch packed for the trip in, please make arrangements the night before. Breakfast is available off of the menu the morning your hunt goes in. Meals and lodging are not included in your drop camp fee and MUST be paid for separately.

If you would like to reserve a cabin for the evening you come out of camp, please call the Lodge as soon as possible (406-562-3654 or toll free 1-888-749-3654).

Specialty Hunts

Sun Canyon Lodge also offers a variety of big game specialty hunts. The Sun River area is known for the large number of native  big horn sheep.  With permits available in three different areas surrounding the Lodge, the large numbers of sheep make this hunt a sportsman’s dream.

Just below the Rocky Mountain Front we have a large population of  antelope  that can be harvested with a special permit. This area allows for opportunity without a large number of hunters present.

If you are in great shape and looking for a real thrill, then you will love the excitement of hunting  mountain lions  with hounds throughout the winter months. These hunts are scheduled individually and the price is given on request. License applications will be mailed on request or can be obtained from the Montana Fish and Game.

customerS’ reviews

This is the most wonderful place to be. My husband and I spent our honeymoon in sun canyon and it has become our favorite place. I will continue to come here for as long as I can. This is a great place to make memories. Thanks Josh And Nikki. You are great people. Love you Charlie and Kadie

I went to my friends wedding and from the time we got there to check in the staff was so awesome and the Sun Canyon lodge camping area is absolutely beautiful! Sleeping in your tent next to the creek was wonderful to listen to! Fun fun fun

We stayed here for several nights. The camp ground is terrific. Showers are amazing! The restaurant serves terrific meals and the prices are reasonable. They go out of their way to make you feel at home. They don’t treat you guests, they treat you like family. Thank you to Nikki, Josh and cowboy Nick for making our stay memorable and fun.

This is a beautiful spot. The fishing opportunities are excellent and you can’t beat the Bob Marshall wilderness for hiking and horseback riding. I’ve travelled all over the west and highly recommend this place.

Outstanding! From my initial phone call inquiring about scheduling a ride for nine, of varying ages and experience, to the end of the beautiful, amazing ride our day was spectacular. Gracious, kind, knowledgeable and a beautiful setting. A++++

A true piece of heaven hidden in the Rockies. Whether you are a camping local or a cabin-renting out-of-state tourist, this is a place of peace, beauty, super clean facilities and some of the best burgers you will ever taste. The views are breathtaking and the staff is wonderful. A Montana “must do!” Would recommend without question or hesitation.

Truly an amazing experience. Niki and Josh run a great business. Their staff is outstanding. I will definitely be back in the future.

Sun Canyon Lodge is tucked in to a breathtakingly beautiful gulch with a cliff on one side and mountain views on the others. Josh and Niki are wonderful hosts, with Niki handling things at the Lodge and Josh guiding the wilderness piece of the adventure. The cabins surrounding the main lodge are charmingly rustic and immaculate. The main lodge, with the restaurant and bar, is warm and cozy. The stables and corrals are a short stroll away so you can visit the animals and if you’re lucky, see a new foal! Be sure to ask Josh and Niki’s young son Charlie for a tour.

The staff was amazing. The scenery was spectacular. The accommodations were cozy. I really appreciated the whole operation–this was in the middle of covid and though the mask mandate did not apply to Teton County, they struck a balance between careful and adaptable. I recommend highly!

Bob Marshall Wilderness Hunts

Big game guided elk and deer hunts.

Join us for the hunt of a lifetime in Montana’s 1.5 million-acre Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Home to North America’s foremost big game animals, this unspoiled wilderness provides unsurpassed beauty and trophy opportunities. To hunt the “Bob” is to experience one of America’s national treasures.

As your hosts, we will provide you with a rewarding and memorable fair chase hunt. Our family has been outfitting in the Bob Marshall Wilderness since 1976. These pack-in hunts begin at the Ranch and we ride by horseback into our permitted base camp on Biggs Creek in the Sun River Valley, near the North Fork of the Sun River on the east side of the Continental Divide within hunting district 442.

The country we hunt rivals any of the pristine and natural habitats found in America and is deep within elk and deer country. The terrain consists of rolling hills and steep mountainsides with a mixture of aspen and lodge pole pine forests and open meadows. This area is home to the Sun River elk herd, which will be in the rut and then begin the migration process. Excellent Mule and Whitetail deer hunting opportunities also abound.

Our goal is to provide an affordable quality hunt to our clients. Our experienced guides will do their best to provide you with a safe and successful hunt (one guide per two hunters). Participants must be in good physical condition to ride into camp and to hike the surrounding country.

Discovering Montana

10 Best All-Inclusive Resorts in Montana

Rebecca Hanlon

By Rebecca Hanlon

Montana has many different monikers like “ Big Sky Country ” or “ Treasure State ” because of the wide-open sky above the Rocky Mountains , the sheer abundance of picturesque scenery, the vast array of lakes and rivers, and the various other natural outdoor delights across the state.

Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park are popular draws for many outdoor enthusiasts interested in hiking, biking, rafting, and skiing, and Montana also attracts many fly-fishing enthusiasts.

While not as prevalent as many beach vacation areas, the state is home to a fair number of all-inclusive resorts, with many of them being along the lines of a traditional or dude ranch in true Montana style.

Montana is an ideal place for all-inclusive vacation opportunities, either in the areas close to Glacier National Park or in the more populated areas like Missoula and some of the towns close to the national parks.

Montana on map, about hunting in montana.

The fourth-largest state in the United States, Montana is a hunter’s and outdoorsman’s paradise. Covering 147,000 square miles, Montana is split into distinct eastern and western regions by the Continental Divide. Most of the major mountain ranges (there are at least 100) are in the west. About 60 percent of the state, most of the eastern section, is prairie, but there are a number of isolated peaks and ranges that interrupt the prairie landscape. Huntable species in Montana include black bears, mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorn antelope, Rocky Mountain elk, Shiras moose, mountain goats, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, turkeys, wolves, and bison. There is also excellent hunting for upland birds and waterfowl in most of the state. Montana’s wildlife is well managed, with excellent trophies of nearly every big-game species being taken in the state every year. Some of the largest bighorn sheep in the world come from Montana, especially the Missouri Breaks region; however, drawing odds are extremely low. Hunting in Montana is conducted on both public and private land, and permission is required to hunt on private land. Outfitters and guides must by licensed by the Department of Labor and Industry. To hunt in Montana, you need a general big-game or species license as well as, in some cases, a permit entitling you to hunt in a specific area or type of animal. A Conservation License is also required. Consult with your outfitter and be certain that he or she is able to either provide the needed licenses and tags or instruct you on how to purchase them. Many of Montana’s hunting opportunities are only available through a draw system, which requires planning ahead. In some cases, however, licenses are available for purchase over the counter or outfitters have tags available for nonresident hunters. Big-game animals must be properly tagged before the carcass is removed from the kill site or before the hunter leaves the kill site. Montana requires that all hunters and guides must wear a minimum of 400 square inches of hunter orange visible above the waist. The rule does not apply to archery hunters hunting during the archery-only season, but it does apply to bowhunters hunting during the general big-game firearm seasons. It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with Montana’s hunting regulations before you begin your hunt, even if you are hunting with an outfitter. Rules surrounding season dates and hunt area boundaries can be complex, and because rules often differ from species to species and region to region, be sure to read up on specific regulations for you particular hunt. Find information at Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks ( fwp.mt.gov ) and specific hunting regulations here: http://fwp.mt.gov/hunting/regulations/default.html .

I've hunted with Montana Safaris twice now. Both times have been top notch. An amazing experience. The hunting is great..but it's so much more, the guides and cook work extremely hard to make the experience a good one. If your looking for an authentic experience to hunt Elk, or Deer, look no further than Montana Safaris. Ive hunted with many outfitters in the west, and Colter's operation stands our with professionalism and providing a real adventure!

Rich Fletcher

Hunted the Bob Marshall Complex with Colter and Rocky three times. Saw black bear and grizzlies. Heard wolves howl and went places on a horse I didn't think possible. Got a sore butt and missed a few shots, but managed to kill a buck and a bull in genuine wilderness. Made forever friends.

Danny Tilley

I hunted with Montana Safaris Thanksgiving week in 2005. Colter was just a youngster then. True western horseback elk hunt. I had a great time and would like to go back someday. Great memories.

A 3rd Generation Outfitting Business

I'm Colter Heckman, a third generation outfitter, and a second generation with Montana Safaris. My parents, Rocky and Lorell, started this business in 1988 when I was 4 years old. You could say that I've been around and I know these mountains pretty well. I hope you are able to come let me show you the sights. Whether it's taking you to a special spot for spectacular views, teaching you just the right way to toss your fly to catch the biggest trout, or nudging you in the direction of a broadside shot at a trophy bull elk, you'll be sure that my knowledge will help you enjoy a trip of a lifetime.

Now with all this experience you can bet I've sure learned the country well and have put together some dang good trips to show off our paradise and our talent as expert mule packers, guides and back country cooks. We've got ourselves a top notch bunch of horses and there's a whole wilderness out there just a waiting for you.

My dad taught me everything I need to know to be a great outfitter and I plan to carry on his legacy in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. After his passing I've acquired a strong urge to keep this business just the way it was. Many of our clients spent countless hours in the mountains with my dad and they got to watch me grow and learn the business. I hope new clients can experience the same with me and my future children.
