Antigua and Barbuda: “Unprecedented” Tourism Numbers

Antigua and Barbuda continues to see record-breaking tourism numbers, officials told Caribbean Journal. 

“After a difficult two years, the tourism industry is seeing the pent-up demand for travel, and we’re delighted to say that Antigua and Barbuda is at the top of visitors list,” said Colin C. James, CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority. “We’ve seen unprecedented numbers in arrivals with air arrivals for the past three months.”

The destination’s July-September numbers surpassed air arrivals in the same period in 2019, before the pandemic, which had been the best year for tourism in the history of the country. 

“We’ve been busy at work for the past two years, adding properties, products and attractions with renovations taking place in many,” James said. 

The CEO was speaking during the recent Caribbean Travel Marketplace conference in Puerto Rico. 

Travel Marketplace provides the vital opportunity to meet face-to-face with stakeholders from around the world selling Caribbean vacation packages and we are confident more visitors from around the world will be choosing Antigua and Barbuda in 2023,” he said. 

James led a delegation that included Patrice Simon, executive director of the Antigua and Barbuda Hotels and Tourism Association; Director of Tourism, US, Dean Fenton, and Norrell Joseph, US Sales Officer, along with representatives from Elite Islands Resorts, Blue Waters, Hermitage and Suntours.

As an Antiguan living abroad it was great to be back home after almost 2 years of living in a pandemic world. Even through it was a short trip my partner and I who have very stressful careers felt relaxed and rejuvenated . He felt so welcomed by everyone he met from the airport to the hotel we stayed at Siboney Beach Club to the taxi drivers who chauffeured us around. So happy to see that my country is getting back to some kind of normalcy and I was able to contribute in my small way as a tourist to help get our Tourism Industry and economy heading in the right direction. Definitely will be back for a longer vacation in the near future!!

1. Antigua and Barbuda is an  island nation  located in the West Indies of the  Caribbean , consisting of two main islands – Antigua and Barbuda – as well as the small uninhabited island of Redonda and several even smaller islands.

2. Antigua and Barbuda has been inhabited since at least 2400 BC. The Siboney are thought to be the first people to inhabit the islands followed by Arawak Indians.

3. Antigua is home to approximately 97% of the population. Nearly all of Barbuda’s population live in the settlement of Codrington.

4. In 1493, Christopher Columbus became the first European to visit Antigua, naming it after the Church of Santa Maria de la Antigua in Seville, Spain.

5. Antigua and Barbuda became independent in 1981 after centuries of British rule who first colonised Antigua in 1632.

6. The flag of Antigua and Barbuda has red triangles at the ends with a central triangular area of white, blue and black stripes, and a sun. Red represents the people working for their own destiny, the V-shape is for victory, black is for the majority population and the soil, blue for the sea, white for the beaches and the sun for the climate.
