Shaped by British, Portuguese, West Indian, and African cultures, Bermuda is fringed by teeming coral reefs and the almost impossibly turquoise waters of the Sargasso Sea, due east of South Carolina. This sub-tropical paradise, which blends history with a contemporary and very inviting way of life, is an easy escape from the East Coast. But the island is still a world apart—and a luxury cruise to Bermuda is the perfect way to enjoy this exclusive destination.

Days drift by in a delightful blend of scuba diving, golfing, exploring art galleries and historic fortifications, or simply relaxing on exquisite pink sand beaches. Let Celebrity show you Bermuda’s many charms, with blissful days at sea to unwind on either side of your time on this fascinating island.

Featured Highlights

Pink beaches.

Bermuda’s beaches are famous not just for their beauty but for their blush-pink sand, caused by the presence of tiny, ground up shells. Horseshoe Bay Beach is the most famous, with clear, teal-blue water and tumbled rocks. Warwick Long Bay is adorned with rock outcrops and has pretty tide pools to explore. Elbow Beach is the place to head for a livelier scene, with bars, restaurants, and watersports facilities, as well as a shallow reef, teeming with fish.

Scuba Diving

Bermuda’s coral reefs and rocks have claimed more than 300 wrecks over time, making this one of the world’s top dive sites. Warm, glass-clear water and the fact that many of the wrecks lie in as little as 30 feet of water make Bermuda a dream for novice divers, too. What’s more, the underwater life is spectacular. You should see blue angelfish, parrotfish, spiny lobster, silvery jacks, wrasse, and graceful eagle rays, as well as coral in brilliant colors.

Colorful History

Step back in time in the National Museum of Bermuda in the Royal Naval Dockyard to learn about 400 years of the island’s history, from antique maps and cannons to treasures rescued from shipwrecks. Learn about the island’s role in both World Wars, and the darker days of the slave trade. UNESCO-protected St. George’s, too, is a fascinating insight into the past, with colorful old buildings and cobblestone streets to explore, as well as the 17th century St. Peter’s Church.

What are the best things to do in Bermuda on a cruise?

From naval history to pretty country villages, hiking trails, and pink sand beaches, there are endless things to do during your time in Bermuda. Our itineraries spend two nights docked here, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore.

One of the best things to do is to snorkel over the coral reefs and multiple wrecks that surround the island. There are some fascinating museums, too; the National Museum of Bermuda, located in a fort at the Royal Naval Dockyard, takes you through 400 years of history. Historic St. George’s is a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 45 minutes from the port by ferry, with narrow cobblestone lanes, colorful old homes, and quaint churches.

If you’re an active traveler, there’s all manner of watersports to try, as well as world-class golf, and cycling or hiking the historic 18-mile Railway Trail. Explore the Crystal and Fantasy Caves, where you’ll see dramatic stalagmites and stalactites and a shimmering underground lake.

There’s also excellent craft shopping in Bermuda, much of it within Royal Naval Dockyard.

Look out for rum, rum cake, spicy pepper sauces, ceramics, linen, locally made fragrances, cedarwood items, and the famous Bermuda shorts.

When is the best time to cruise to Bermuda?

Bermuda’s peak season is from May to October, with July and August the warmest and sunniest months. May has the lowest rainfall. Just outside of the high season, you should still enjoy pleasant weather. Months with lower humidity, particularly April, make exploring easy.

What should I pack?

Depending on the time of year you’ve chosen, pack for a subtropical climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes (if you’re visiting coral beaches), and reef-friendly sunblock.

A light waterproof jacket is handy for the occasional rain showers. Consider bringing comfortable walking shoes; Bermuda is a very walkable place with some wonderful hikes.

If you intend to play golf, check the dress code of the courses you want to play. A collared shirt with sleeves and shorts the length of Bermuda shorts is standard.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What travel documents are required?

Round-trip cruises from Cape Liberty to Bermuda are known as “closed-loop cruises” for which U.S. citizens do not require a passport.

According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, acceptable forms of identity include an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth.

For transatlantic cruises that call at Bermuda, all visitors will need a valid passport.

Where do cruises depart from?

Our Bermuda cruises depart from Cape Liberty, New Jersey. Bermuda is also a stop on several of our transatlantic cruises, which depart from Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Barcelona, and Lisbon.

How long does it take to get to Bermuda?

The sailing time between Cape Liberty and Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard is two days, during which you’ll have plenty of opportunity to relax and enjoy the many amenities of the ship. On the return journey, you’ll have one day and two nights at sea.

On a westbound Transatlantic cruise, you’ll have four days at sea between the Azores and Bermuda. On an eastbound voyage, you’ll leave Tampa and arrive in Bermuda after three days at sea. If you depart from Fort Lauderdale, there will be two days at sea before reaching the island.

What’s the weather like?

Bermuda is located in the Atlantic Ocean, a long way north of the Caribbean, and enjoys a temperate, subtropical climate. In other words, you can expect summers to be warm and sunny, with temperatures around the mid-80s, and high humidity.

May to October is considered the high season, with April and November bringing slightly cooler but still pleasant weather. Expect average highs of 68°F in April and 72°F in November.

What currency is used in Bermuda?

Bermuda’s currency is the Bermuda Dollar, which is tied to the U.S. Dollar. You can use U.S. dollars in most places on the island, although you may be given change in Bermuda dollars.

Where can I see pink sand beaches?

Horseshoe Bay Beach is one of the most beautiful pink sand beaches, where rocky outcrops fringe the sweep of pink and there are umbrellas and beach chairs available to rent. Warwick Long Bay, one of the longest beaches, has pale pink sand and great snorkeling close to the shore. Tiny Jobson’s Cove, nearby, is almost entirely hemmed in by rocks and is safe for swimming in the turquoise shallows.

Also nearby is Stonehole Bay, a beautiful combination of pale pink sand, cyan water, and craggy rocks. Elbow Beach, another popular spot, curves around the coast for nearly a mile, and is protected by coral reefs.

Explore Cruises to Bermuda

Bermuda possesses all of the stunning attributes of a tropical paradise, with a unique mix of travel experiences. You’ll experience island vibes, British charm, a temperate climate, palm trees, impossibly blue water—and it’s an easy island getaway for anyone who lives on the East Coast. In fact, one of the most popular departure ports for a Bermuda cruise is Cape Liberty in New Jersey, just across the river from New York City.

From relaxing on a pink sand beach to diving over one of the many shipwrecks to hiking through a jungle, there is something for everyone. You can descend into the incredible Crystal Caves, viewing the natural stalactites and stalagmites. Bermuda's museums and art galleries add touches of urban sophistication. Its well-preserved forts surround you with its history. And, its natural island beauty makes it ideal for water sports, hiking, golfing, or just lazing on a picture-perfect beach. Our 7- and 10-night Bermuda cruise itineraries offer two overnights in Royal Naval Dockyard, so you have enough time to do it all.

Plus, starting in 2020, all of our Bermuda sailings will visit stunning Newport, Rhode Island, famous for its historic mansions of the Gilded Age and dramatic seaside cliffs. And, on our 10-night sailings, you’ll also enjoy an overnight stay in Charleston, South Carolina, a city that’s equal parts southern charm and cosmopolitan excitement.

Get to Know Bermuda’s Highlights

The best Bermuda cruise you could ever take is one with Celebrity. You’ll experience a vacation like no other, immersed in natural beauty, fascinating history, and distinctive cuisine. Experience it all with the Best Premium Cruise Line on a Bermuda cruise.

Natural Beauty

Beautiful pink sand beaches, shallow water, and remarkable visibility in the seas surrounding Bermuda make diving there an unforgettably vivid experience. In Newport, you can explore the Goosewing Beach Preserve, one of Rhode Island’s most scenic spots, where endangered shorebirds are protected. And on our 10-night sailings visiting Charleston, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the coastal marshlands.

Be awed by the magical spectacle of the bioluminescent waters off Bermuda a few days after each full moon, or snorkel by day to swim alongside colorful reef fish. As if that weren’t enough, you can get up-close and personal with whales off the coast of Newport. And you’ll discover Charleston’s majestic dolphins and seabirds.

Bermuda is surrounded by beautiful reefs, which account for its history—and its well-earned reputation as a spectacular dive site. In 1609, the flagship of Admiral Sir George Somers was wrecked on these reefs while en route to the colony at Jamestown, Virginia. The crew then built two small ships and headed on to the American colony, but three sailors hid out and remained on the island. They were Bermuda's first European settlers. Not only can you can visit these historic sites, you’ll also discover the enchanting mansions of the Gilded Age in Newport, and visit the island of Fort Sumter in Charleston on our 10-night sailings.

Cruising guide, why cruise to bermuda.

If you’re looking to spend the night in a tropical place, consider a cruise to Bermuda. Sailings to the British island – only a few hundred miles off the coast of North Carolina -- typically spend two days in port, allowing guests to really dig their toes into its famous pink-sand beaches.

For all of its refined island appeal, Bermuda can get a pricy. Hotel nights, drinks and meals quickly accumulate a hefty vacation price tag, which makes your ship -- a virtual floating hotel -- a great option for visiting. Though it's encouraged to try some of the local cuisine (and especially the rum cocktails), it's handy to have included meals and amenities waiting for you back onboard if your wallet needs a break.

What are Popular Activities in Bermuda?

Bermudians blend their British roots with the pace of island life; you might go sailing and swimming in the morning and settle in for a proper cup of tea in the late afternoon. Golf courses are plentiful, and a round at one is on many golfers' bucket lists.

A day in the sun is par for the course here, where pristine beaches meet the Atlantic on all sides. Cruisers might book a tour that picks them up right from the port to go snorkeling with turtles, sailing or Jetskiing. Or, hop in a cab over to the famous Horseshoe Bay Beach. Crystal and Fantasy Caves are a shaded (read: underground) spot on the island where visitors can explore this awesome natural wonder.

Shopping is also a productive way to spend a day in Bermuda. Popular souvenirs include anything rum-related (especially rum cakes), a sherry pepper sauce that gives the local seafood chowder its kick, hand-blown glass from studios in Hamilton and French perfume from a perfumery in St. George's that has been selling scents for more than 90 years.

When is a Good Time to Cruise to Bermuda?

Bermuda enjoys mild weather year-round in a sub-tropical climate, but cruises here are concentrated in the spring, summer and fall, as temperatures do dip beyond swimming weather in the winter months.

What are Popular Ports in Bermuda?

There are three cruise ports across the nearly 21 square miles of Bermuda, but chances are your ship will be docked in a place called King's Wharf. The Royal Naval Dockyard, located at King's Wharf, is a historic military base that now houses dining, retail, handicrafts and the Clocktower Mall. A family-friendly beach and other amenities are within walking distance of the terminal.

Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda, is an easy ferry ride away from King's Wharf. Mega-ships aren't able to dock here, though some smaller ships (roughly less than a thousand people) still do. Bars and restaurants are concentrated in Hamilton. Every Wednesday night during the summer, a street festival called Harbour Nights brings music, food trucks and entertainment along the city's main drag.

Also accessible by ferry is St. George's, the former capital of Bermuda and one of the earliest English settlements after Jamestown. Only the smallest ships are able to dock here, but it's well worth a day trip to explore the pastel-hued homes and historic landmarks.

Where do Bermuda cruises depart from?

Cruise ports that cater to Bermuda sailings are mainly located on the East Coast and include Boston, Baltimore, Bayonne, New York and Charleston.

What are Tips to Find Cruise deals to Bermuda?

Here are our best tips for finding a cheap cruise or cruise deal to Bermuda. If you book a “guaranteed cabin” (they select for you), a cabin on a lower deck or sail on an older ship from a brand you like, then you can get the best price for a specific cruise to Bermuda. Last minute cruises deals to Bermuda appear as you get closer to the sail date, usually 1-2 weeks in advance. Taking a cruise to Bermuda in the shoulder season (before or after the peak season) can also be a great way to find a cruise deal.

Why Cruise to Bermuda?

The island of Bermuda has become a popular cruise destination for numerous reasons. A self governing British Overseas Territory, Bermuda has a comfortable sub-tropical climate. A misconception is that Bermuda is located in the Caribbean. However, Bermuda’s location is just 700 miles away from North Carolina, in the Atlantic ocean.

Convenient North-East Departures

Bermuda cruises have North East departures leaving from New York, New Jersey, Boston and Baltimore. This is a convenient for many Americans and Canadians who like to drive to their port or have a short flight.

Many cruises to Bermuda offer overnight stays (2-3 days in Bermuda), allowing time for excursions to pink sand beaches, world renowned golf courses, and a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Options for Cruise Lines and Cruise Ships

There are many cruise ships that sail to Bermuda, from large cruise ships that dock in Royal Naval Dockyard, to smaller ships that may dock in Hamilton or St. George.

Suggestions for Cruisers When Planning Your Bermuda itinerary

Remember that your ship will be docked at the cruise port for a night or two, depending on your itinerary. It’s a good idea to plan excursions that will be further from the cruise ship on day 1 and day 2. Then save the last day for activities that are close to the ship in the Royal Navy Dockyard .

Top Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise

Hamilton Bermuda pastel buildings

Here are a few popular must-see Bermuda attractions. Please tailor this Bermuda cruise guide to your interests and pick a few attractions to focus on. If you love Bermuda, simply plan another cruise to return!

1. Horseshoe Bay Beach

horseshoe bay beach

Arguably the most famous beach in Bermuda, Horseshoe Bay Beach is about a 15 minute drive from the Royal Naval Dockyard cruise port. You’ll see long stretches of blush pink sand and striking rock formations, jutting out from the turquoise waters close by the shoreline.

You can get there by taking public transportation or a shuttle right from the cruise port. At about 7$ a person from port right down to the beach, the shuttle is very convenient. While there are other beaches nearby, including Warwick and Church Bay which you may also want to visit, you simply must see Horseshoe Bay!

Do not let the crowds scare you off – walk all the way past the crowds to the left. Continue past the first couple rock formations and it is Heaven!

2. Baby Beach

If you have young children check out Baby Beach immediately to the right. The rock formations insulate the cove area from rougher seas at the main beach and provide for great viewing of many fish and crabs!

3. Rum Bum Beach Bar and Beach House Restaurant

While you’re at Horseshoe Bay Beach, you can grab a bite to eat at the on-site take out restaurant along with a pretty good Rum Swizzle from the Beach Bar. While not inexpensive at about 10$ a drink, they’re quite good!

4. Tobacco Bay Beach

Located in St. George’s parish, Tobacco Bay Beach is considered to be one of the best Bermuda Beaches for snorkeling. While Tobacco Bay is known for it’s shallow and clear waters, perfect for seeing marine life, how Tobacco Beach got it’s name is interesting part of Bermuda’s history.

In the early 1600’s, a group of Castaways whose ship wrecked upon the reefs explored the island of Bermuda and it’s beautiful beaches. At this beach, they found wild tobacco growing. Hence, Tobacco Bay Beach was named .

Now don’t go looking for tobacco on your Bermuda cruise. There’s none to be found hundreds of years later, but the name “Tobacco Bay Beach” remains.

5. Hamilton City

Just a ferry ride away from Royal Navy Dockyard is Hamilton, the capital city of Bermuda. This truly is a beautiful small city to explore. If you enjoy history, consider spending a day in Hamilton to see the sights.

As you arrive in Hamilton, you’ll see Front Street, the main street lined with colorful pastel buildings facing the harbour. Hamilton is a great place to shop for jewelry, clothing, crafts made by local artisans, souvenirs and rum.

Tip:  There’s a department store called Marks & Spencers in walking distance from Hamilton Harbour.  It has a section in the back with delicious food imported from the UK. We buy some shortbread and jam cookies and striped mint candies called Humbugs. We bring them back as souvenirs for friends and family back home.

6. City of Hamilton Walking Tour

Hamilton Bermuda

Spend a couple of hours walking around the city of Hamilton on a self-guided walking tour or take a tour with the local town crier. Start on Front Street, then explore up and down Queen Street, Cedar Avenue and Church Street.

Some interesting sights to see include government buildings such as the Cabinet Building, the Sessions House and the impressive City Hall. An interesting fact about Bermuda’s rich history, is that Bermuda’s parliament is the oldest in the British commonwealth.

If you enjoy museums and art, make sure to stop in at the Bermuda National Gallery.

7. Cathedral of the Holy Trinity

In the parish of Hamilton, you’ll also find some of Bermuda’s oldest historic churches. In particular, the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity is worth a visit. On weekdays it’s open to guests who wish to climb the tower, where you experience incredible views of Hamilton city.

8. Hamilton Harbour Nights

Gombey Dancers in Bermuda

If your cruise ship will be in Bermuda on a Wednesday, you should plan on going to Hamilton’s Harbour Nights Festival. Hamilton Harbour Nights is a fun evening street fair with local vendors of handicrafts and delicious street food.

There are performers and a parade. You will also get to see a parade of local Gombey Dancers in traditional costumes. This is truly one of my all-time favorite Bermuda attractions. You won’t find this anywhere else!

How to get to Hamilton from the cruise port (Dockyard)

You simply take the 25 minute ferry ride from the ship dock to Hamilton. I suggest going a bit early as the ferry line does get long and it will be crowded. The ferry is 5$ per person each way, however depending on what you are planning during your visit to Bermuda, it may be worth buying a multi day pass for the ferry and bus.

Bermuda Cruise Tip

If you head into town a couple hours before, you can visit some of the Government buildings and beautiful churches and perhaps do a bit of shopping. You can also check out some of the popular local restaurants and people watch.

9. Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ)

If you are looking for things to do in Bermuda with kids, this Aquarium, Zoo and Museum is a favorite for families. The super large aquarium is the main attraction, and is a living replica of Bermuda’s coral reef – so you’ll see a wide variety of Bermuda marine life here. You’ll see outdoor pools with seals and turtles as well.

Once you see the aquarium, visit the small zoo and interesting museum. Do check their website for opening hours and tour times.

10. Crystal Caves and Fantasy Caves

crystal caves, bermuda

In the parish of Hamilton, you will find the famous natural beauty of the Crystal Caves. This unique cave, home to underground shimmering stalactites set over a clear ocean fed lake is a sight you won’t soon forget!

You’ll be intrigued to know that Mark Twain himself was the first tourist to visit!

We had an amazing day at Crystal Caves on our Bermuda cruise on the Celebrity Summit .

If you’re thinking of going to Crystal or Fantasy Caves, here’s detailed review and helpful guide with how to get to Crystal Caves from Royal Naval Dockyard  using Bermuda’s public transportation.

11. The Swizzle Inn

This well known pub and restaurant is home to the famous Rum Swizzle. If you’re planning a day, consider coming here for a casual lunch or dinner after visiting Crystal Caves or another sight. Consider getting a pitcher or original rum swizzles and sharing.

The Swizzle Inn is located across the street from Crystal Caves.

12. Bermuda’s National Drink – the Rum Swizzle

Bermuda is known for 2 drinks, the Rum Swizzle and the Dark and Stormy, both made with Goslings Rum. I’ve had both, but the Rum Swizzle is one of my all time favorites. I now even make a version of this drink at home!

You’ll find Rum Swizzles at quite a few bars and restaurants in Bermuda, however the original is at the Swizzle Inn.

Follow along in our YouTube video as we head over to Crystal Caves, Swizzle Inn and Hamilton by ferry and bus.

13. Gibb’s Lighthouse

Located about 30 minutes away from the cruise port, accessible by bus or taxi, Gibb’s Lighthouse is a phenomenal spot to get a great bird’s eye view of western Bermuda and the cruise ship port.

There’s even a restaurant where you can enjoy afternoon tea. If you are a lover of Maritime History and British history, be sure to put this on your list of things to do while in Bermuda.

14. Parish of St. George Historical Reenactment

St. George is about 45 minutes away from  by ferry. It is a truly gorgeous ride, so well worth the trip!

St. George is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this is a good place to do a walking tour. You’ll find historical landmarks and museums, including the T ucker House Museum, The Unfinished Church and Fort-St. Catherine.

What is the Must-Do ?

This town is quaint and slow paced and has some interesting sites to see, plus one of the quirkiest things you will see anywhere! The Ducking Stool in the town center, King’s Square.

St. George has 18th century historical re-enactments in King’s Square which include a Town Crier and “The Dunking of the Nagging Wench”.

Now, I bring my sense of humor when I travel and we just thought this was totally different.

Local actors participate and school children come watch. They just really have a fun time and involve the “audience” in the show. It is usually on Thursday’s at 12:30, however please check for the current schedule .

Things to do near the cruise ship in Bermuda – Royal Naval Dockyard/King’s Wharf

The Dockyard area near the cruise ship has quite a lot to do and see, however do plan your Bermuda itinerary carefully.

It may surprise you to know that even with 2 and 3 days in port, every year there are cruise passengers who miss the ship , as don’t return to the ship on time.

As a suggestion, use your first day or two to visit places further from the port and do excursions on your own. Your last day and evenings could be spent closer to the ship in the dockyard area.

Just note that the last day in Bermuda is always busier around the cruise port/Dockyard area.

15. Royal Naval Dockyard

The Royal Naval Dockyard has quite a few activities to do and places to visit, all within a short distance of your cruise ship. It’s well worth exploring and taking time to visit this part of Bermuda.

There’s even a free trolley if your feet are just a little tired from exploring Bermuda’s beaches and other attractions. You’ll find really pretty shops with Bermuda crafts and souvenirs, well as some nice, casual restaurants and pubs. There are museums, a beach area and several types of activities!

Since there’s so much to see, we toured Royal Navy Dockyard and created this video below (where you’ll see some of our favorite things!)

16. Snorkel Park Beach

This man-made beach is literally a 5 minute walk from the cruise ship dock. It’s a very calm small beach to visit if you have young children as well as if you’re looking for a beach day on the last day of your cruise. At 5$ to enter, its a great deal for nice, fun beach day.

They have snorkel gear that you can rent, or you can bring your own. Kayaks and other water sports equipment is available for rent.

17. Dolphin Quest

Right next to Snorkel Park, you’ll find Dolphin Quest. If you or your children have dreamed of swimming with dolphins and learning about them, this is offered within walking distance of the ship. Booking ahead is suggested.

18. National Museum of Bermuda

If you or your children enjoy learning about Bermuda’s History as well as seeing artifacts from sunken treasures, this is a great way to spend a few hours. There is also a play area for young children. The museum located in the Keep, Royal Naval Dockyard is free for children 16 and under and does have a charge for adults. Check their website for opening hours and rates.

19. Clock-tower Mall and Local Shops in Dockyard

The Clock-tower Mall, which is visible in many of the the pictures you’ll see of the Bermuda Cruise Port, is filled with small local shops. If you want to bring back some Bermuda perfume, some artist’s paintings or prints, handmade jewelry and other crafts, this is the place to find it.

Other shops in Dockyard include a rum cake shop and the glass blowing shop where they demonstrate their work. Some great clothing stores feature nautical themed clothing and made in Bermuda jewelry, candles and other collectibles.

*Many of the shops and some local artists and shopkeepers are featured in this Bermuda Dockyard video on YouTube .

20. Bermuda Treats to Eat or Take Home

My favorite souvenirs to bring home usually include some local treats. You can find some good options right in dockyard, close to your cruise ship.

21. Bermudas’s Moongate in Dockyard

bermuda cruise port moongate

Bermuda has several Moongates located around the island. Lucky for us cruisers, there is one right in Dockyard fairly close to the cruise ships.

Legend has it that if couples walk through the Moongate together, they’ll be blessed with a long and happy life together.

My husband and I first walked through this Moongate in 2008 during our first visit to Bermuda by cruise. Since then we’ve gone through it each and every time we’ve returned.

I’ve come to realize that this Moongate is part of many people’s Bermuda stories, from anniversaries, to engagements to just being together and stopping for a moment to create a vacation memory.

Let it become one of yours – find the Moongate (and take a photo).

Bermuda Shore Excursions

It’s been said that Bermuda is best seen from the water. There are some great excursions including catamaran snorkeling , wave runners, glass bottom boats and more.

While you certainly don’t have to book and excursion, as there is plenty to do and see on your own, there is value to a local excursion. You can book these with your cruise ship, or directly with a local tour operator.

It can be a good idea to book online before you go as excursions are popular and can sell out.

22. Snorkeling and Boat Excursions

I quite like catamaran and boat excursions as for me it is the right amount of “organization”, local information from the tour operator or guide, and activity to make it an enjoyable part of our visit.

The last couple of years we’ve had great excursions with Rising Son Tours. We’ve appreciated the gorgeous catamarans, friendly and informative crew, and rum swizzles of course!

We were provided with noodles, paddle-boards and had an overall great time floating in the crystal clear waters.

If you’re not fond of getting into the water, consider a romantic Champagne Catamaran excursion at sunset or a boat tour of some of the beautiful and famous homes of Bermuda.

Here’s my review, so you can see what is offered and what to expect:  Bermuda Rising Son Cruises Catamaran Snorkeling Review

23. Port Royal Golf Course

Bermuda has some of the most beautiful and highly rated golf courses in the world, so if you are a golfer, put this on your wish list. Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton is the closest golf course to the ship and is easily accessible by bus or cab. Golf clubs, shoes and carts are all available to rent. However, if you are cruising to Bermuda it is very easy to bring your own golf clubs on board.

24. Tom Moore’s Jungle/Blue Hole Park

If you are looking for something different that is not often on the cruiser’s radar, make your way to Tom Moore’s Jungle in the parish of Hamilton. This nature reserve has wooded paths, mangroves, caves and grottos, including well known Blue Grotto. You’ll see a variety of birds and fish as well.

There’s always an interesting story in Bermuda: this nature reserve is named after Irish poet Tom Moore, who wrote poetry under a calabash tree in this reserve in 1844. The famous tree was destroyed in a hurricane several years ago, however its branches have begun to grow again.

25. Dining in Bermuda & Local Eats

Bermuda is a bit on the expensive side, as a lot is imported from the US or Britain. Since you are cruising, try to plan your day so that you can take advantage of eating some meals on the ship and some meals in Bermuda.

Some of the most popular pubs for both locals and tourists include the Hog Penny Pub or Flanagan’s Irish Pub in Hamilton. If you want to grab a bite close to the ship, a great spot is The Frog and Onion Pub.

A little place quite close to the cruise port that is distinctively local is Woody’s. It’s only about 5 minutes away by cab. I’ve unfortunately not eaten there yet, however I hear from the locals that they make a fabulous fish sandwich!

If you’ve been to Bermuda and know other great spots I should add to my list, please leave a comment below.

Final Thoughts on the Best Things to do in Bermuda for Cruisers

I hope that this list of the best things to do in Bermuda on a cruise can help you enjoy Bermuda as much as I have!

Although Bermuda is a small island, remember to build a little itinerary so that you plan things that are in the same area. Divide up your must-see Bermuda attractions into your 2-3 days. Whatever is left, just means you must return on another cruise!

My favorite thing o do was on the other end of the island is an old NASA tracking station. Looking around old buildings and tracking equipment from the 60’s was cool. It also has over a two mile long runway from the old space. Shuttle days. Built for emergency landings of shuttle.

Hi Russell,

That is so interesting! I’ll have to look into this and probably one day do a good tour of the island!

Thanks for the great suggestion!

21 BEST Things to Do in Bermuda on a Cruise in 2023

If you’re planning a cruise to Bermuda and wondering where to go and what to see, here are the 21 best things to do in Bermuda on a cruise.

Situated just 665 miles off the coast of North Carolina, Bermuda’s subtropical climate and breathtaking scenery make it a popular destination for vacationers from the East Coast. Cruises run throughout Bermuda’s tourist season (April until early November) from ports including Boston, New York, and Baltimore.

best cruise lines to bermuda

Discovered in 1505 by Spanish explorer Juan de Bermúdez, Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory and still retains much of its British heritage.

The former colony’s residents are huge fans of cricket, and pubs serve classic favorites like a Ploughman’s Lunch and Cornish pasties. Even the famous Bermuda shorts (part of traditional formal dress on the islands) are derived from British military uniform.

But it’s not just beautiful views, warm weather, and a taste of the UK that bring so many visitors to Bermuda each year. At just over 20 square miles in area, Bermuda may be small but there are lots of amazing things to do in Bermuda on a cruise .

1. Visit Royal Naval Dockyard

If your cruise ship berths at King’s Wharf or Heritage Wharf, your introduction to Bermuda will be the Royal Naval Dockyard —it’s right in front of the wharves! Located on the northwest tip of Bermuda on Ireland Island, the Dockyard currently has nine restaurants and food vendors and over 30 retail stores, along with various kiosks and attractions.

A building in Bermuda's Royal Naval Dockyard

Construction began on The Royal Naval Dockyard in the early eighteenth century, and it was an active naval base until the 1950s. Although it wasn’t officially closed until 1995, plans were made in the 1980s to begin turning the area into a tourist destination.

Today, the stone naval buildings and the surrounding area have been transformed into a shopping, dining, and entertainment complex, including the Clocktower Mall, the National Museum of Bermuda, Dolphin Quest, and Snorkel Park.

2. Go underground at Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave and its adjacent sister attraction, Fantasy Cave , are natural wonders that draw thousands of tourists each year. Formed over the last 30 million years, the ceilings of the caves are covered with clusters of spectacular stalactites made from calcite mineral deposits.

the walkway through Crystal Cave in Bermuda

Crystal Cave was discovered in 1907 by two boys who lost their cricket ball down a hole. Crawling in to retrieve the ball, they found that the hole seemed to be much deeper than they expected. The property owners lowered their teenage son into the hole with a bicycle light and a rope tied to a tree. He soon discovered a clear blue subterranean lake surrounded by crystal stalactites.

Be sure to wear rubber-soled shoes to avoid slipping and bring a jacket or sweater—the 50°F (10°C) temps in the caves can be chilly to visitors coming in from the summer sunshine!

Although a viewing platform has been built inside the caves, they aren’t accessible to those with mobility challenges. Due to the location deep underground, there are many sets of stairs throughout the attractions. Fantasy Cave is located deeper underground than Crystal Cave and has more stairs to climb.

Crystal and Fantasy Caves , 8 Crystal Caves Rd., Hamilton Parish, Bermuda. Open daily 9 AM – 5 PM. Guided Tours leave every 20 minutes (last tour 4:30 PM). Admission per cave: Adults: $24, children (age 12 and under): $10, children under 5 free. Combination tickets for both caves are available. +1 (441) 293-0640

3. Relax at Horseshoe Bay Beach

Located on the South Shore and easily accessible from King’s Wharf and Heritage Wharf by the inexpensive private mini-buses that run from the pier, Horseshoe Bay Beach makes for the perfect beach day.

Horseshoe Bay Beach Bermuda

Despite its long stretch of pristine pink sand and clear aqua surf, Horseshoe Bay Beach can get pretty crowded. If you’re looking for seclusion rather than masses of beachgoers, grab your water shoes and head all the way to the left after entering the beach. You’ll see some rocky outcroppings, but they’re easily passable (if a little slippery).

Keep walking, and you’ll find cove after secluded cove. Butts Beach, Middle Beach, Water Rocks Beach, and Angle Beach are all perfect spots to get away from the crowds, and the stunning rock formations surrounding them provide a dramatic backdrop for photos.

Horseshoe Bay Beach has public restrooms and changing facilities, a counter-service restaurant and an outdoor bar. Umbrella, tent, and lounger rentals are available for a fee. Lifeguards are on duty while the beach is open.

4. Shop and dine in Hamilton

Hamilton, Bermuda’s capital since 1815, was officially incorporated in 1793 and named for Governor Henry Hamilton. With just over 1000 residents, Hamilton is one of the smallest world capitals. The city is primarily a business district, with office buildings, shops, and restaurants dominating the landscape.

shoppers along the street in Hamilton Bermuda

Only smaller cruise ships dock at Hamilton’s cruise port today, but the city is an easy trip by ferry from the Dockyard. If you want to indulge in some luxury shopping and fine dining, be sure to visit Hamilton—just don’t do it on a Sunday or national holiday because most shops will be closed.

Pick up Bermuda specialties and British imports at the boutiques and department stores on and around Front Street, Hamilton’s shopping district. Don’t forget, there’s no sales tax in Bermuda!

After working up an appetite shopping and exploring, you’ll definitely be ready to eat! Top Hamilton restaurants include Harry’s at the Waterfront for steaks and views of the harbor, Ascot’s for local and international cuisine, and Little Venice for elegant Italian. Be warned that Bermuda imports its food and beverages, so prices tend to be high compared to the mainland.

5. Climb Gibbs Hill Lighthouse

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse , built in 1844 by the Royal Engineers, is one of the first lighthouses in the world to be constructed of cast iron. The taller of two lighthouses on Bermuda, Gibbs Hill’s light shines out at 354 feet above sea level. It’s visible to planes from over 100 miles away!

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Bermuda

The lighthouse is open to the public, and you can climb its 185 steps to the top in eight flights. As it’s the tallest structure in Bermuda, the views from the top of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse can’t be beat.

The Dining Room, located in the former living quarters of the lighthouse attendant, is open daily for lunch and dinner. They offer breakfast on weekends.

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse , Lighthouse Road, St Anne’s Rd, Cross Bay, Bermuda. Open Monday – Sunday 10 AM – 4 PM . Closed to visitors each February. Admission: $2.50. +1 (441) 238-8069

6. Step back in time in St. George’s Town

Accessible from the Dockyard via ferry, St. George’s Town in the East End is Bermuda’s former capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is full of British colonial architecture, history, and culture.

best cruise lines to bermuda

Visiting St. George’s feels a bit like exiting a time machine. Picturesque limestone buildings line its cobblestone lanes and alleys. The Ducking Stool, a 17th- and 18th-century public punishment, sits in King’s Square. Nearby is a recreation of the Discovery , the ship that brought Bermuda’s settlers to Jamestown in the early 1600s.

Just outside of town are Fort St. Catherine, built in 1614, and Martello Tower, built in 1820. Great Head Battery and Park, on the eastern tip of Bermuda, was constructed in 1910 to defend the Narrows Channel.

7. Cliff jump in Tom Moore’s Jungle

Tom Moore’s Jungle, officially known as Walsingham Nature Reserve , was named after Thomas Moore, the Irish poet. Moore was appointed to a government post in Bermuda in 1803 but spent only three months there. Legend says he would sit under a tree in the jungle to drink and write poetry. Despite his short stay in Bermuda, locals still refer to this lush forest as his.

An art installation at the Blue Hole in Tom Moore's Jungle Bermuda

Walsingham Nature Reserve is located in Hamilton Parish, about an hour’s drive from King’s Wharf. The reserve features coastal mangroves, native palmetto, and cedars.

The main attractions are the reserve’s wet and dry caves and swimming grottos. Blue Hole Park, once the site of a dolphin show lagoon, is surrounded by 12- to 15-foot cliffs, perfect for jumping into the water below.

There’s no fee to enter Tom Moore’s Jungle, but a local guide is recommended if you want to find and explore the caves. Some of the best parts of the reserve aren’t clearly marked.

8. Learn about Bermuda’s history at National Museum of Bermuda

Located in the Royal Naval Dockyard, the National Museum of Bermuda is housed in historic military buildings of the 18th-century naval Keep Fort.

By day, Snorkel Park Beach is a family-friendly spot, popular with snorkelers, kayakers, and sunbathers.

But after the sun goes down on summer evenings, the beach often hosts parties with music and dancing into the wee hours. If your cruise ship’s nightclubs and bars close too early for your taste, head over to Snorkel Park, where the party doesn’t stop until 3 AM.

You can dance the night away under the stars with Bermuda’s best DJs and live bands. The kitchen is open late for hungry partiers.

Don’t want to stay up quite that late? Snorkel Park hosts bonfires on the beach, after-dark tiki beach parties, and even family-friendly afternoon events.

On the southeastern tip of Bermuda, the 12-acre Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve  features extensive walking trails and access to several public beaches including Clearwater Beach and Turtle Bay.

A Bermuda skink at Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve - Best Things to do in Bermuda

Cooper’s Island was a restricted area until it opened to the public in 1995. The reserve was previously occupied by the U.S. military and was later used as a NASA space tracking station. Today, it’s part of Bermuda’s national park system, and a perfect spot for hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and wildlife spotting.

One of the former radar towers has been re-purposed into an observation tower. Be sure to check out the displays inside its base and climb to the top for a beautiful view.

Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve , Cooper’s Island Rd., St. David’s, Bermuda. Free to enter.

17. Take photos of the Unfinished Church

Located in St. George’s Town a quick walk from King’s Square, the Unfinished Church is a picturesque Gothic ruin. After St. Peter’s Church was badly damaged by a storm, Edinburgh architect William Hay was hired to design a replacement. Construction began in 1874, but the church was never finished.

best cruise lines to bermuda

Why was the Unfinished Church never completed? Some of the parishioners split off to form a new congregation. In 1884, a cathedral in Hamilton burned, so funds needed to be diverted from the project. By the 1890s, many felt strongly that St. Peter’s Church, built by the first settlers soon after their 1612 arrival, should be repaired. Construction on the unfinished church was abandoned, and heavy damage from a hurricane in 1924 sealed its fate.

Today, the site is managed by the Bermuda Trust and is a popular location for weddings. Due to concerns with its structural integrity, the inside isn’t currently open to visitors. However, it’s worth a brief stop (maybe on your way to Tobacco Bay?) to snap some gorgeous photos of this Gothic beauty.

Unfinished Church , Government Hill Rd., St. George’s Town, Bermuda . Free to visit.

18. Celebrate at Harbour Nights

As many Bermuda cruises include an overnight or two, midweek visitors to the island are in for a treat—the Harbour Nights festival in Hamilton takes place each Wednesday night during the summer.

best cruise lines to bermuda

Harbour Nights is the largest and longest-running street festival in Bermuda. Every Wednesday during high season, Front Street in Hamilton is closed to all vehicle traffic after sunset. Shops and restaurants remain open late, while music and lights brighten the street. Local artists and vendors decked out in colorful clothes set up to sell various arts and crafts as well as food.

A highlight of the event is the Gombey dancers, whose tradition is a mix of British, West African, and indigenous cultures, performing in their brightly-colored costumes.

Harbour Nights , Front Street, Hamilton, Bermuda. Every Wednesday from late May until early September, 7 PM to 10 PM.

19. Try a Rum Swizzle at Swizzle Inn

If you’re a fan of rum cocktails, you’ve surely tried a Dark ‘n’ Stormy, a favorite Bermuda libation. But the Rum Swizzle is often referred to as Bermuda’s national drink.

a Rum Swizzle at the Swizzle Inn, Bermuda

With both Goslings Black Seal and Gold Seal Rums, triple sec, pineapple, orange, and lemon juices, Bermuda falernum, and a few dashes of Angostura bitters, the Rum Swizzle packs quite a punch.

The best place to try one? The Swizzle Inn , of course! They’ve been making Rum Swizzles since they opened in 1932. The historic building dates to the 17th century and is furnished with rustic, no-frills décor. Be sure to sign your name on the wall before you leave!

The Swizzle Inn also has a pub menu featuring sandwiches, wings, pizza, and finger foods in addition to heartier entrées. Try the Wazoo burger, a Bermuda-favorite fish sandwich.

The menu includes dessert, but Bailey’s Bay Ice Cream Parlour is just across the street. With over thirty flavors of homemade ice cream from the classics to the (very) unusual, you’ll be sure to find one to suit your taste.

20. Snorkel at Tobacco Bay Beach

Tobacco Bay Beach, with its clear shallow water is one of the best spots in Bermuda to snorkel. The bay received its unusual name in 1609 by survivors of the shipwrecked Sea Venture , after wild tobacco was found growing there.

Tobacco Bay’s limestone rock formations make it a haven for fish and other marine life. Snorkelers can spot blue parrotfish, grouper, sergeant majors, angelfish, and more! Snorkel equipment can be rented on the beach, but we prefer to bring our own.

Stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and floats are also available to rent, along with loungers and umbrellas. Bathroom and shower facilities are on site, and free WiFi is available.

Tobacco Bay Beach has a beachside restaurant and bar, offering burgers, hot dogs, and wings along with cocktails, beer, and soda.

During high season, the beach often hosts nighttime events and beach parties after sunset.

Tobacco Bay Beach , 9 Coots Pond Rd., St. George’s, Bermuda . Free to visit. Open every day 10 AM to 5 PM (later during scheduled events).

21. Explore a shipwreck

Whether or not you believe in the legend of the Bermuda Triangle, the waters around Bermuda certainly are the resting place for a large number of doomed ships. More than 300 shipwrecks lie in the waters surrounding Bermuda , with 20 of them close to the shoreline.

best cruise lines to bermuda

You can explore some of these shipwrecks while visiting Bermuda on a SCUBA dive or even just with a snorkel set! Most are only accessible by boat. However, the wreck of the Pollockshields is close enough to Elbow Beach in Paget Parish that it can be reached from the shore by a strong swimmer. Be warned that the waters can be rough. Ammunition that was loaded on the British ship when it hit a coral reef during a hurricane in 1915 litters the sea floor.

If you’re looking for a safer way to explore a shipwreck off Bermuda, a snorkeling tour by boat with an experienced guide is the way to go! The Constellation and Montana shipwrecks are very popular snorkeling sites. The two wrecks are close to each other and are also home to abundant coral and fish species.

The  Montana was a Civil War blockade runner that made numerous trips between England, Bermuda, and North Carolina. The 236-foot paddlewheel steamer hit the reefs during a winter storm in 1863 and sank in shallow waters. Its wreckage lies in a sandy valley surrounded by coral. Most of its bow is intact and encrusted with coral.

Check out the short video below to see what the wreck of the Montana looks like now.

The four-masted schooner Constellation was a 192-foot-long wooden-hulled cargo vessel. Bound for New York from Venezuela in 1943, the ship began to take on water close to Bermuda. The unlucky ship hit the same reef as the Montana (or possibly the Montana herself!) as it approached Bermuda for repairs. Its cargo, including building materials, ampules of morphine, and 700 cases of Scotch lay scattered on the sea floor.

Your cruise line will likely offer a shipwreck snorkeling tour, but booking one outside of the cruise line will often save you quite a bit of money. Check the price on a snorkeling tour of Montana and Constellation here .

Most cruises to Bermuda depart from ports along the eastern coast of North America, such as Miami, New York City, Boston, and Baltimore. These departure points are easily accessible for travelers from the United States and Canada, making it convenient to embark on a cruise to the island.

Cruise ships bound for Bermuda usually have a dedicated terminal at each departure port, equipped with immigration and customs facilities to streamline the boarding process. This ensures a smooth and efficient embarkation experience for passengers, allowing them to begin their vacation with ease.

The duration of the journey to Bermuda varies depending on the departure port. For example, cruises departing from New York City typically take around two full days to reach the island, while shorter journeys of around one day are common for departures from ports like Miami.

Once the ship arrives in Bermuda, it docks at one of the island’s main ports of call, such as the Royal Naval Dockyard, Hamilton, or St. George’s. Passengers have the opportunity to disembark and explore the island during their time in port, immersing themselves in Bermuda’s unique culture, attractions, and natural beauty.

When it’s time to bid farewell to Bermuda, passengers will reboard the ship for the return journey to their original port of embarkation. The length of the return trip is typically similar to the outbound journey, depending on factors such as weather conditions and the specific itinerary of the cruise.

Overall, getting to Bermuda by cruise ship is a convenient and enjoyable option for travelers seeking a stress-free way to reach this stunning destination. A common misunderstanding is that the Caribbean is where Bermuda can be found. On the other hand, Bermuda is located in the Atlantic ocean and is only about 700 miles away from North Carolina.

Easily Accessible Departures in the North-East

Cruises to Bermuda typically depart from ports in the Northeastern United States including New York , New Jersey, Boston, and Baltimore. Many people in the United States and Canada like to take a quick flight or drive to their port of departure, so this is a convenient option for them.

There are regular cruises to Bermuda offered by Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Carnival, among others. Luxury cruise lines such as Viking Cruises and Regent Seven Seas include Bermuda itineraries on several of their cruise itineraries.

Where Can Cruise Ships Make Their Dockings?

The majority of cruise ships make their stops at King’s Wharf or Heritage Wharf, which are both located within the Royal Naval Dockyard, usually referred to simply as Dockyard. The closest public transportation stops are only a few minutes’ walk away from King’s Wharf. Suggestions for Cruisers to Consider When Organizing Their Itinerary for Bermuda

It is important to keep in mind that, depending on the specifics of your route, your ship will spend at least one night moored in the cruise port. It is a smart move to schedule day 1 and day 2 shore excursions that take place at a greater distance from the cruise ship . Then, put aside the final day for things to do in the Royal Navy Dockyard that are located close to the ship.

Top Cruise Attractions in Bermuda and What to Do While You’re There

The following is a list of some of the most famous and must-see sites in Bermuda. Please adjust our Bermuda cruise guide to meet your needs and concentrate on the attractions that are most important to you. If you find that you really enjoy Bermuda, all you have to do is book another trip there!

1. The beach at Horseshoe Bay

The cruise port at Royal Naval Dockyard is approximately a 15-minute drive from Horseshoe Bay Beach, which is often considered to be the most well-known beach in all of Bermuda. Long expanses of blush pink sand and spectacular rock formations that jut out from the turquoise waters near to the shoreline are both things that you will witness here.

From the cruise port, you can take public transit or a shuttle to get there, or you can drive yourself there. The shuttle is a pretty easy way to get from the harbour all the way down to the beach, and it costs about seven dollars per passenger. Even though there are other beaches in the area, such as Warwick and Church Bay, that you might also be interested in checking out, you really have to go to Horseshoe Bay!

You should not be discouraged by the large number of people; instead, you should walk all the way past the masses to the left. After passing the first handful of rock formations, you will finally arrive in Heaven.

2. The Baby Beaches

Check out Baby Beach, which is located directly to the right of where you are if you have young children. The rock structures protect the cove region from the rougher seas that are seen at the main beach and offer fantastic opportunities to see a wide variety of fish and crabs.

3. Rum Bum Beach Bar and Beach House Restaurant

While you are visiting Horseshoe Bay Beach, you can have a bite to eat at the on-site take out restaurant and a really nice Rum Swizzle from the Beach Bar. Both of these establishments are located right on the beach. Although they are not cheap at roughly $10 for a drink, they are extremely delicious!

4. The beach at Tobacco Bay

Tobacco Bay Beach, which can be found in St. George’s parish, is regarded as having some of the best snorkelling conditions of any beach in Bermuda. The tale of how Tobacco Beach gained its name is an intriguing piece of Bermuda’s history. Tobacco Bay is famous for its beautiful waters and modest depths, which make it an ideal location for viewing marine life.

Castaways from a ship that had been destroyed by the reefs in the early 1600s were the first people known to explore the island of Bermuda and its breathtaking beaches. They discovered that wild tobacco was growing on this shore. As a result, the beach was given the moniker Tobacco Bay Beach.

Don’t bother seeking for cigarettes when you’re on your vacation to Bermuda. Even if none can be found hundreds of years later, the beach is still known by its old name, “Tobacco Bay Beach.”

5. The City of Hamilton

The city of Hamilton, which serves as the capital of Bermuda, may be reached by taking a ferry from Royal Navy Dockyard. Exploring this charming little city will definitely be a highlight of your trip. If you have an interest in the past, you should give some thought to spending the day in Hamilton to take in the historical sites.

When you first enter Hamilton, you’ll find yourself on Front Street, the city’s primary thoroughfare, which is lined with pastel-colored buildings that front the harbour. The city of Hamilton is a fantastic location to go shopping, particularly for rum, jewellery, apparel, and gifts manufactured by local artisans.

A helpful hint is that Marks and Spencers, a well-known department store, can be reached on foot from Hamilton Harbour. In the back, there is an area devoted to delectable foods that have been brought in from the United Kingdom. We get some jam biscuits, shortbread, and striped candies with a mint flavour that are called Humbugs. We take them with us as souvenirs to give to our loved ones back in our native country.

6. A stroll through the heart of Hamilton

Spend a few hours wandering around the city of Hamilton on a self-guided walking tour or join a tour with the local town crier. Both options are great ways to see the city. Beginning on Front Street, proceed to explore Queen Street, Cedar Avenue, and Church Street by going up and down each of these streets.

Government structures, such as the Cabinet Building, the Sessions House, and the Sessions House, as well as the spectacular City Hall, are some of the most noteworthy places to see. The fact that Bermuda’s parliament is the oldest in the British commonwealth is an intriguing tidbit to learn about the island’s long and illustrious past.

Make sure you make time to visit the Bermuda National Gallery if you take an interest in art or museums.

7. The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in St. Petersburg

A number of Bermuda’s oldest and most historically significant churches can be found in the parish of Hamilton. In particular, it is recommended that you pay a visit to the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity. It is possible for visitors to climb the tower on weekdays, at which point they will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramas of the city of Hamilton.

8. Hamilton Harbour Nights (in the evenings)

You should make plans to attend Hamilton’s Harbour Nights Festival if your cruise ship will be in Bermuda on a Wednesday and you will be there. The Hamilton Harbour Nights street fair is a festive nighttime event that features local vendors selling handmade goods and delectable street food.

There will also be a procession and performers. You will also have the opportunity to witness a procession of local Gombey Dancers dressed in traditional garb. This is without a doubt one of my top picks among all of Bermuda’s attractions. This is something that you won’t find in any other place!

Directions from the cruise port to the city of Hamilton (Dockyard)

From the ship dock, you simply board the ferry to Hamilton, which will take around 25 minutes. I would recommend leaving a bit earlier than usual because the queue for the ferry does become lengthy and it will be busy. The cost of the ferry is five dollars per person for each direction; however, depending on what you have planned during your time in Bermuda, it may be more cost effective to purchase a multi-day pass that includes both the ferry and the bus.

Bermuda Cruise Tip

If you head into town a couple of hours early, you will have time to explore some of the town’s beautiful churches and government buildings, as well as do some shopping if you so choose. You might also go to some of the more well-known eateries in the area and monitor the patrons there.

9. Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo (BAMZ)

This Aquarium, Zoo, and Museum is a favourite among Bermuda’s families, and it is a great place to visit with children if you are seeking for activities to do in Bermuda with them. The major feature is the extremely huge aquarium, which is a living duplicate of Bermuda’s coral reef. As a result, you’ll be able to observe a broad diversity of marine life that is native to Bermuda. You’ll come across outdoor pools that are also home to turtles and seals.

After you’ve finished at the aquarium, head over to the charming zoo and educational museum. Please ensure that you visit their website in order to determine the timings of their tours.

10. The Crystal Caves as well as the Fantasy Caves

The Crystal Caves are an area of outstanding natural beauty that may be found in the parish of Hamilton. This one-of-a-kind cavern, which is home to underground dazzling stalactites set over a pristine ocean-fed lake, is a sight that you won’t be able to forget anytime soon!

It’s sure to pique your interest to learn that Mark Twain was the very first tourist to come to the area!

11. The Swizzle Inn (Swizzle Inn)

This well-known tavern and restaurant is the birthplace of the well-known cocktail known as the Rum Swizzle. If you are making plans for the day, you might want to think about coming here for a relaxed lunch or dinner after touring the Crystal Caves or some other attraction. You might want to purchase a pitcher or some original rum swizzles and share them with your friends.

The Swizzle Inn can be found just opposite of Crystal Caves, on the opposite side of the street.

12. The Rum Swizzle is the official national drink of Bermuda.

Two cocktails called the Rum Swizzle and the Dark and Stormy, both of which are created using Gosling’s Rum, have made Bermuda famous. Both of them are delicious, but the Rum Swizzle is one of my all-time favourites among cocktails. I’ve gotten to the point where I can even prepare a homemade version of this beverage!

Rum Swizzles can be found at a number of different taverns and restaurants in Bermuda; however, the Swizzle Inn is where the drink was first created.

13. The Lighthouse of Gibbs

Gibb’s Lighthouse, which can be reached by bus or taxi and is situated approximately thirty minutes away from the cruise ship port, is an excellent location to visit in order to get a breathtaking aerial perspective of western Bermuda and the port.

There is even a restaurant on the premises where you can have afternoon tea. Be sure to put this on your list of things to do while you are in Bermuda if you are a history buff with a particular interest in British and maritime history.

14th Annual Historical Reenactment of the Parish of St. George

By ferry, the trip to St. George takes approximately forty-five minutes. It is a trip that is well worth taking because the ride is so breathtakingly beautiful.

The city of St. George is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, making it an ideal location for a strolling excursion. The Tucker House Museum, Fort-St. Catherine, and The Unfinished Church are just a few of the historical landmarks and museums that can be found here.

What are the Obligatory Steps?

This town is charming and unhurried, and in addition to some interesting places to visit, it is home to one of the most peculiar sights you are likely to encounter anywhere. The Ducking Stool can be found in the middle of the town, in King’s Square.

Reenactments of historical events from the 18th century are staged in King’s Square in St. George. These events include “The Dunking of the Nagging Wench” and a Town Crier.

Now, whenever I travel, I always remember to bring a sense of humour with me, and we just thought this was completely unique.

Royal Naval Dockyard and King’s Wharf are both great options for things to do in the vicinity of the cruise ship in Bermuda.

14.Bermuda Cruise Tip

Even though there is a lot to do and see in the Dockyard area close to the cruise ship, make sure to carefully plan out the rest of your Bermuda itinerary.

Even though they have two or three days to spend in port, there are still cruise passengers who miss their ship every year because they do not return to the ship on time. This information may come as a surprise to you.

It is recommended that you spend the first day or two of your trip travelling to locations that are further out from the harbour and participating in independent excursions. The last day and evening of your trip could be spent in the dockyard area, which is closer to the ship.

Take into consideration the fact that the cruise port and Dockyard areas are always more crowded on visitors’ final day in Bermuda.

15. Royal Naval Dockyard

Your cruise ship is only a short distance away from the Royal Naval Dockyard, where you may enjoy a wide variety of attractions and activities during your stop. It is highly recommended that you go on an adventure and spend some time discovering this region of Bermuda.

If you find that walking around Bermuda’s beaches and other attractions has left your feet feeling a little sore, you can take advantage of the complimentary trolley service. In addition to some great, laid-back restaurants and pubs, you’ll discover some extremely pretty shops filled with crafts and souvenirs made in Bermuda. There are also beaches and a number of different types of activities to choose from!

16. Snorkel Park Beach

The cruise ship pier is simply a five-minute walk away from this beach that was created intentionally. If you are searching for a day at the beach on the final day of your trip, as well as if you have young children, this is a very quiet and little beach that you should consider visiting. The entry fee of five dollars is a steal for a day spent having fun at the beach.

You have the option of renting snorkelling equipment from them, or you can bring your own. Renting options are available for canoes, paddleboards, and other water sports gear.

17. Dolphin Quest

Dolphin Quest may be found in the immediate vicinity of Snorkel Park. It is possible to swim with dolphins and learn about them within walking distance of the ship, which is perfect if you or your children have always wanted to fulfil a childhood fantasy. Making reservations in advance is recommended.

18. Bermuda’s National Museum and Art Gallery

This is an excellent way to pass a few hours, particularly if you or your children take pleasure in learning about the history of Bermuda and observing relics recovered from sunken treasures. In addition, there is a play area for infants and toddlers. Children under the age of 16 are not need to pay to enter the museum that is housed in the Keep of the Royal Naval Dockyard; however, there is a fee for adults. Check out their website to learn more about their pricing and opening hours.

19. Local Shops at the Clocktower Mall in Dockyard

The Clocktower Mall, which is featured in many of the photographs that you can find depicting the Bermuda Cruise Port, is home to a variety of locally owned and operated stores. This is the best spot to go shopping if you are looking for handcrafted items, such as handmade jewellery, paintings or prints by local artists, or other types of Bermuda-inspired artwork.

Other shops in Dockyard include one that sells rum cakes and another that specialises in glass blowing and hosts demonstrations of the process. Some of the best apparel boutiques in Bermuda contain items with a nautical motif, as well as jewellery, candles, and other collectibles that are manufactured in Bermuda.

20. Bermuda Delights to Snack On or Take With You

One of my favourite things to get from a new place is some of the regional delicacies to take home. Right on the dockyard, in close proximity to your cruise ship, you may discover a few nice dining and shopping options.

You may bring back some locally made fudge from the Bermuda Fudge Company or some rum cakes from the Bermuda Rum Cake Company. These are just a couple examples of some ideas.

21. The Moongate in Dockyard on the Island of Bermuda

Moongates can be found all throughout the island of Bermuda in various spots. We are really fortunate in that there is one located right in Dockyard, not too far away from the cruise ships.

There is an urban legend that states that in order for a couple to be blessed with a long and happy life together, they must go through the Moongate together.

The year 2008 marked the first time that my husband and I cruised to Bermuda, and it was also the first time that we stepped through this Moongate. Since that time, we have been had to go through it on each and every one of our subsequent visits.

It has recently occurred to me that this Moongate is an important part of the Bermuda narratives of many individuals, whether they are celebrating an anniversary, an engagement, or simply being together and pausing for a moment to build a vacation memory. Excursions from the Shore in Bermuda

It has been claimed that the greatest way to experience Bermuda is from the water. There are a variety of exciting adventures available, such as wave runners, glass bottom boats, snorkelling from a catamaran, and more.

There is no requirement that you arrange an excursion because there is plenty to do and see on your own, but it is beneficial to participate in a local trip if you are in the area. You are able to make reservations for these excursions either through your cruise ship or directly with a local tour operator.

Because excursions are so popular, it is an excellent idea to make reservations online before you travel to avoid disappointment.

22. Boat Trips with Snorkeling and Other Attractions

The combination of “organisation,” in the form of local knowledge imparted by the tour operator or guide, and action, as is the case with catamaran and boat excursions, makes for a fun component of our trip. I very much appreciate these kinds of outings.

Rising Son Tours has provided us with some truly memorable experiences over the past few years. The beautiful catamarans, the helpful and knowledgeable crew, and the rum swizzles, of course, were all highlights for us.

We had a wonderful time floating in the gin-clear waters, thanks in large part to the fact that we were given paddle boards and noodles to use.

If you are not a fan of getting into the water, you might want to think about going on a Champagne catamaran cruise at sunset or taking a boat tour of some of the most stunning and well-known properties in Bermuda.

23. The Golf Course in Port Royal

If you are a golfer, Bermuda should go at the top of your bucket list because the island is home to some of the most stunning and well regarded golf courses in the world. The Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton is the course that is located closest to the ship, and it is quite easy to get to by public transportation or taxi. Renting options include not only golf clubs and shoes but even golf carts. However, if you are going to Bermuda on a cruise, bringing your own golf clubs with you is not a difficult task at all.

24.Tom Moore’s Jungle and Blue Hole Park comes

Tom Moore’s Jungle is located in the parish of Hamilton and is worth visiting if you are interested in experiencing something unique that does not appear very frequently on the cruiser’s radar. The Blue Grotto is one of the caverns and grottos that can be found within this nature reserve. Other features include mangroves, caves, and grottos. There will be a wide variety of fish and birds for you to observe.

There is always an interesting story to be told in Bermuda: this nature reserve is named after Irish poet Tom Moore, who wrote poems in this reserve in 1844 while sitting under a calabash tree. In spite of the fact that the well-known tree was decimated by a hurricane a number of years ago, new growth has started to appear on its limbs.

25. Eating Out in Bermuda and Bermuda Dishes

Since so much is brought over from the United States and Britain, the cost of living in Bermuda can be considered to be on the higher end. Since you will be sailing, you should aim to organise your day in such a way that you may take advantage of eating some of your meals on the ship and some of your meals while you are in Bermuda.

The Hog Penny Pub and Flanagan’s Irish Pub in Hamilton are two of the city’s watering holes that are highly recommended by both residents and visitors alike. The Frog and Onion Pub is an excellent choice if you are looking for a place to eat that is somewhat close to the ship.

Woody’s is an unmistakably neighbourhood hangout that is located in close proximity to the port for cruise ships. It shouldn’t take more than approximately 5 minutes in a cab to get there. Unfortunately, I have not yet had the opportunity to eat there; but, I have it on good authority from the locals that they make a fantastic fish sandwich!

If you’ve been to Bermuda and know of any additional amazing places that should be on my list, please share your recommendations in the comments section below.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Thinking of booking a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line ? You have a lot of choices. The Miami-based line operates vessels in almost every corner of the world, with a wide range of itineraries in many destinations.

You’ll find Norwegian ships everywhere, from the Caribbean and the Bahamas to Europe, Asia and Australia. The line is also a big player in Hawaii.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter.

In addition, Norwegian is particularly known for cruises to Bermuda out of Boston and New York City, and it offers Canada and New England cruises regularly. It also operates some Panama Canal sailings and trips from the West Coast of the U.S. to the Mexican Riviera.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail from a relatively wide range of home ports, including Boston; New York City; Miami and Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City and Quebec in Canada; and Seward, Alaska.

Here is a look at the best destinations you can visit on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship.

Related: The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line

Some of Norwegian’s most exciting itineraries are in Europe, where the line is a significant player. It offers a wide range of itineraries in the Mediterranean and across northern Europe.

Norwegian will typically deploy around half of its 19 ships to the continent from spring to fall, making Europe its biggest focus for more than half the year. Norwegian also sometimes offers Europe cruises in the winter — albeit typically with just one ship.

Norwegian’s Mediterranean sailings provide the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona in Spain; and Florence, Rome and Naples in Italy in a single cruise. Or, you can sign up for a Mediterranean cruise that focuses on the Greek Islands.

In northern Europe, Norwegian will take you to such famed Baltic cities as Stockholm; Tallinn, Estonia; and Helsinki in a single sailing.

In past years, such Baltic trips have also included a multiday call at St. Petersburg, Russia — traditionally the highlight of any Baltic sailings. However, like all major cruise lines, Norwegian pulled St. Petersburg from Baltic itineraries for 2022 and 2023 in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

As of the publishing of this guide, Norwegian had opened bookings for all of its Baltic sailing through late 2025, and St. Petersburg remains off the schedule for all of them. The line hasn’t said when it might return to St. Petersburg.

For those looking to explore northern Europe, Norwegian also offers itineraries that zero in on Iceland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

Norwegian’s Europe voyages range widely in length from just three nights to a whopping 19 nights.

Among the longest sailings that Norwegian offers that include calls in Europe are one-way trips between Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens), and Dubai. Typically lasting 18 or 19 nights, these will often include stops in Israel and sometimes Greece, as well as visits to Egypt, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

In Northern Europe, Norwegian ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam, Stockholm, Copenhagen, England’s Southampton and Reykjavík in Iceland.

In the Mediterranean, the line’s hubs are Barcelona, Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy, Piraeus (the port for Athens) in Greece, and Istanbul.

The Caribbean and the Bahamas

The Caribbean and the Bahamas have always been a big area of operations for Norwegian. In fact, for a long time, the regions were so much the focus that the line included “Caribbean” in its name. Up until 1987, Norwegian was known as Norwegian Caribbean Line.

These days, Norwegian usually keeps just two of its 19 vessels in the Caribbean and the Bahamas year-round (in recent years, the year-round ships have been Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Escape, both sailing to the Caribbean and the Bahamas from Florida ports). However, it really ramps things up in the region in the winter, when it deploys a large portion of its ships to the Caribbean and the Bahamas.

Norwegian currently has 15 of its 19 ships scheduled to sail to the Caribbean and the Bahamas for at least part of 2024 — including its newest and most advanced ship, the 3,219-passenger Norwegian Viva.

Norwegian offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from more than half a dozen home ports. If you’re looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of lots of quick, three- and four-night trips from Miami to the Bahamas.

It also offers an abundance of seven-night sailings to Caribbean and Bahamian ports, as well as a handful of longer trips in the region that range from nine to 14 nights.

At the core of the line’s Caribbean and Bahamas program are its seven-night sailings, which break down into three broad categories:

  • Eastern Caribbean voyages
  • Western Caribbean voyages
  • Southern Caribbean voyages

A typical seven-night Norwegian sailing to the Eastern Caribbean includes stops in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic; and Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas.

Norwegian’s seven Western Caribbean voyages will typically include a visit to Roatan, Honduras; Harvest Caye, Belize; and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico.

The line’s Southern Caribbean itineraries will often bring visits to Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Lucia and St. Kitts. They typically begin and end in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

When sailing to the Caribbean, Norwegian ships generally sail out of Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa in Florida; and San Juan, Puerto Rico. The line also offers Caribbean sailings out of New Orleans, New York City and, occasionally, Panama City, Panama.

Norwegian is the undisputed leader in Hawaii cruises. Most cruise lines that offer sailings to Hawaii only offer a limited number of such trips during a few months each year. Norwegian, by contrast, offers sailings around the Hawaiian Islands out of Honolulu every week of the year — the only cruise line in the world to do so.

Norwegian’s Hawaii voyages are also more intensely focused on Hawaii than the Hawaii trips offered by most other lines. This is because Norwegian offers its Hawaii cruises on one of the only cruise ships in the world that meets the regulatory requirements allowing it to spend all its time in the destination.

Norwegian’s Hawaii trips take place on Norwegian’s 2,186-passenger Pride of America, which has the rare distinction of being both U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed. By law, only such a vessel can cruise full-time in Hawaii without regularly traveling long distances to foreign ports.

An iconic presence in Hawaii, Pride of America has been permanently dedicated to the archipelago since its debut in 2005. It offers a repeating seven-night itinerary that begins each Saturday in Honolulu and brings the chance to visit four different Hawaiian islands on a single seven-night trip.

Beginning and ending on the island of Oahu, the itinerary includes two days each on the islands of Maui, Kauai and Hawaii. The two-day visit to Maui involves an overnight stay at the port of Kahului.

The two-day visit to Kauai involves an overnight stay at the port of Nawiliwili. The two-day visit to Hawaii is split between a call at Hilo and a call at Kona.

Norwegian isn’t the biggest player in Alaska cruises. The giants of cruising to Alaska are Princess Cruises and Holland America , which are sister lines that control a large percentage of the market.

Still, Norwegian typically sends three to five vessels to Alaska every summer, and its big, activity-filled ships are a popular pick with families looking to visit the destination.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to early October.

For 2024, Norwegian plans to deploy four ships to the Alaska market for the full season:

  • Norwegian Encore : Norwegian’s biggest vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It will call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Norwegian Sun: This ship will operate a mix of nine- to 11-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle. The list of port calls varies based on the length of the trips.
  • Norwegian Bliss : The 4,002-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. On most sailings, it will call at Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point in Alaska, plus Victoria, British Columbia. It will also visit Alaska’s Endicott Arm for glacier viewing. Some sailings at the start and end of the season substitute a visit to Skagway and Glacier Bay National Park for the stops in Sitka and Icy Strait Point, and drop the visit to Endicott Arm.
  • Norwegian Jewel. The 2,376-passenger ship will operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Seward, Alaska. The trips typically include stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, plus a visit to either Glacier Bay National Park or Icy Strait Point.

In recent years, the 2,018-passenger Norwegian Spirit also has spent its summers sailing in Alaska, but its Alaska voyages for 2024 were canceled as a result of the vessel being chartered to another company.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Norwegian Jewel is that they can be combined with Norwegian-organized land tours of Alaska lasting from three to six days to create 10- to 13-night “cruisetours.”

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks.

Related: The ultimate Alaska cruise guide

Norwegian usually deploys two ships on Bermuda runs every year — one out of New York City and one out of Boston.

In both cases, the sailings offered are mostly seven nights in length and include a two-night stay in Bermuda.

For 2024, Norwegian will devote one of its biggest and newest ships, the 3,802-passenger Norwegian Joy, to Bermuda. It will run out of New York. The line’s 2,394-passenger Norwegian Gem will sail to Bermuda out of Boston.

In addition, the line’s 3,969-passenger Norwegian Getaway will operate a handful of sailings to Bermuda out of New York during the early part of 2024, and the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Breakaway will operate a few sailings to Bermuda out of New York toward the end of 2024.

The line’s relatively new Norwegian Prima will operate a single Bermuda sailing out of New York at the end of 2024.

While most of Norwegian’s Bermuda sailings are seven nights in length, the line also sometimes offers a few shorter four- and five-night Bermuda sailings and, occasionally, a longer, nine-night Bermuda sailing.

Note that the shorter Bermuda sailings can offer very little time in the country, sometimes as few as nine hours.

Bottom line

Norwegian offers a wide range of itineraries in destinations around the world, from the Caribbean to Asia. However, you’ll find the most choices among Norwegian itineraries in the Caribbean and Europe.

The line is also well-known for voyages around Hawaii and to Bermuda. Its Hawaii sailings, in particular, are something of a rarity in the industry.
