It has been decades I have visited Visakhapatnam, after reading your post I am sure what interests my family and choose accordingly.

Lol I have to admit, I was not expecting this to include a submarine! What a fun and unique museum!

I am so impressed with the variety of things to see in Visakhapatnam. The wildlife and nature is where I would want to spend most of my time, but those beaches and caves look fantastic too.

What an interesting place! I really like the submarine, and I think I would really enjoy visiting the Tribal Museum and learning about the cultures of the local tribes.

Went to Visakhapatnam from Hyderabad a couple of years back on my India visit. Loved Araku valley and the plantations. The submarine museum was unique. First time I ever entered into a submarine.

I love caves, waterfalls and wildlife, so would want to spend my time exploring that. My boys would love the aircraft and submarine museums. It sounds like we should visit the culture center if we come to the area as well to learn about the native people.

Your photo of Rushikonda Beach is amazing! I never thought of India as a beach destination, for me it’s more about the culture, the food and the temples… But to know that this is one of the cleanest beaches in India is very enticing!

Visakhapatnam certainly seems to have everything. I love beautiful beaches, but am more interested in the museums (especially the coffee museum!) and the caves. I would really like to visit this area. It looks beautiful but with so many interesting places to check out, it seems ideal for family visit.

We were sorry we did not get to visit the great beach areas in India when we visited. We certainly would head to Rushikonda Beach. As an ex-Navy guy, hubby would not miss the Naval Submarine or Aircraft Museums. I would bargain for a day trip to Katiki Falls or the Borra Caves in exchange for those museum days!

The Bora caves are SO BEAUTIFUL they remind me of Ruby Falls in Tennessee. Lambasing is quite eerie in a hauntingly beautiful way. This sounds like a great place to visit.

Beaches, wildlife and waterfalls, this place ticks plenty of must haves on my list. I can’t wait to visit.

Best Places to Visit In Visakhapatnam (Vizag)

Call it Visakhapatnam or Vizag, it does not feature on the must-visit tourist places in India. And that notion should be immediately changed because Visakhapatnam for tourism is amazing. I did not google things to do in Visakhapatnam or the best places to visit in Visakhapatnam as I was on a work trip and my day was action-packed. It was also expected to rain due to the tropical Cyclone Gulab . I planned to stay indoors as I flew on my work trip from Ahmedabad .

And I regretted not reading what to visit in Visakhapatnam the moment my flight started its descend. My flight window showed beaches and a sharp turn later, some mountains. As I landed and saw some more mountains, I kept thinking, Visakhapatnam is supposed to be a port city and have beaches and all I could see was mountains surrounding it. 

This intrigued me and I mentally tried to arrange my work schedule so I could spend some time visiting a couple of places and praying that Visakhapatnam weather doesn’t play spoilsport.

Where is Visakhapatnam situated?

Visakhapatnam is situated in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Visakhapatnam is a port city having headquarters of Eastern Naval Command on the coast of the Bay of Bengal and surrounded on three sides by the overlapping mountain ranges. Vizag’s shipyard is this country’s oldest and one of the largest shipyards, and the only natural harbour on the East Coast. 

Due to the naval base, Visakhapatnamfor for living is a preferred choice for ex-navy and maintains a cosmopolitan culture.

Best places to visit in Visakhapatnam (Vizag)

Visakhapatnam is a class A city and has mountain ranges, valleys naturally formed caves, temples, beaches, museums and even Buddhist pilgrimage sites.  Visakhapatnam is also the ninth cleanest city in India (Swachh Sarvekshan ranking, 2021).

Naval Submarine Museum | Kursura Submarine Museum

If you have seen the movie, Ghazi Attack , you can relate to this museum so much and feel super proud about it. An actual submarine that was used in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 is now converted into a museum. The museum consists of pictures of artefacts and an exhibition of original machinery that depict the life of warriors. It is one of the best tourist places in Visakhapatnam.

Kursura submarine was commissioned in 1969 and served the nation for over 30 years, where it played a key role in patrol missions. The submarine also participated in naval exercises with other nations and made many goodwill visits to other countries. After decommissioning, it was towed to RK Beach in Visakhapatnam and was established as a museum ship, which is the first submarine museum in South Asia. Towing the submarine 600 metres to its final location took 18 months and cost approximately Rs. 6 crores (60 million).

I swelled with pride looking at the mammoth size of the submarine, the engineering functions and the space utilization with which it served for three decades. And that is why the submarine is of the must-visit places in Visakhapatnam.

Tip: The museum is open till 9 pm so you plan to visit it at the end of the day.

Camera fees: Rs. 50 per camera

TU 142 Aircraft Museum

On the road opposite the submarine, the museum is the Aircraft TU-142M museum which was commissioned in the year 2017. After 29 years of service, the TU-142M aircraft of the Indian Navy was decommissioned and converted into a museum. If you are an enthusiats that loves aircrafts then this is one of the best places to visit in Visakhapatnam.

You can enter the actual aircraft, but before that there is an interpretation centre developed wherein various equipment and parts of aircraft are displayed inside an exhibition hall. Types of equipment like sonobuoys, propeller, engine, survival kit, anti-submarine missile, data recorder etc are displayed with all details. The design of the aircraft was inspired by the bird ‘Albatross’ by a Russian designer Tupolev. It is the world’s heaviest and fastest flying turboprop aircraft.

After visiting the exhibition hall you will enter into the aircraft. Photography is not allowed inside the aircraft. After seeing various equipment inside the plane you can come out of the aircraft from its front door to then take a photo of the aircraft. You need skills and a wide frame lens to photograph it in one frame!

Kailasagiri – Best parks in Visakhapatnam | Best places to visit in Visakhapatnam

All the local residents told me to visit Kailasagiri as it is one of the must-visit destinations in Visakhapatnam. Located in the heart of the city, it is perched at a height of 560 feet and offers spectacular views of the city and the east coast. You can take a ropeway to reach the hilltop.

Considered to be a well-known attraction due to the huge idols of Shiva and Parvathi, this is a well-known picnic spot amongst the locals and tourists alike which offers plenty of beautiful viewpoints like Shiva Parvathi Statue, Shanku Chakra Naama, Floral Clock, Jungle Trails, Food Courts, 7 Wonders of Vizag, Shiva Temple, Titanic View Point, etc. You can also hop into the toy train operating at the park which takes a circular tour of this garden at the hilltop.

Bheemili Beach

Bheemunipatnam (popularly known as Bheemili)  is one of the longest beaches in the country. Unlike RK beach or Rushikonda beach, there are fewer tourists here which according to me are brownie points. It is easily one of the most offbeat places in Visakhapatnam and can also pass off as romantic places near Visakhapatnam for couples.

Located about 25 km from Visakhapatnam, Bheemili beach has its own character and is one of the hidden places in Vizag. Driving from Visakhapatnam to Bheemili is amazing as you can see the coast on your right side most time and mountains straight ahead in front of you. The Beemili beach is said to be safe for swimming as compared to RK or Rushikonda, but I’d not recommend it because I found it to be a bit dirty, thanks to a village settlement nearby.

There is a major Dutch settlement of the 17th century near the beach. The town also contains one of the oldest Christian cemeteries on the coast.

Dolphin’s Nose

A fascinating viewpoint offering gorgeous views of the city as well as of the coastline, the Dolphin’s Nose happens to be one of the must-visit places in Visakhapatnam. Named after the large rock viewpoint that resembles the shape of a dolphin’s nose, there is also a lighthouse which is one of the sought after attractions.

I did not have the time to go all the way, it is about 10kms from the city, but clicked it from RK beach, so yes it is visible from far.

VUDA Park – Visakhapatnam Best Places

VUDA Park, also known as Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority Park (VMRDA) is a perfect family outing and picnic place in Visakhapatnam. With a lovely manicured garden, a skating rink and a musical dancing fountain it is favourite among the locals and the tourists. Many Vizag Tours Packages include this park in their list of things to do in Vizag. The park is located near RK Beach.

Visakhapatnam Film City | Ramanaidu Film Studio

Probably the newest addition to Visakhapatnam Tourism, the Ramanaidu film studio is located at the top of a hill. Surrounded by hills on one side and sea on the other side, this film studio is used by several film producers of nearby states to produce movies in national and regional languages.

Simhachalam Temple 

Out of the many Hindu Temples in Visakhapatnam , Simhachalam Temple is one of the most popular and frequented temples in Visakhapatnam. It is a famous religious site that is frequented by the locals and all the pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has a history that dates back to the 9th century when the Later Cholas founded it. It is one of the best places to visit in Visakhapatnam for the journey within.

This is made of fresh tomatoes that are coated with gram flour and deep-fried and cut into half, like cups, with the tomato flesh scooped out. Served with crunchy peanuts these are a must-try!

Kalakand is Visakhapatnam famous sweet. Made with milk, cottage cheese and ghee, Kalakand makes its presence felt in every local festival. It comes in two variants, brown and white and the brown Kalakand is more popular than its white counterpart in Visakhapatnam.

Weekend getaways from Visakhapatnam – Araku Valley

Araku Valley is one of the best weekend getaways from Vizag. Situated only 100 km away, a one day trip is possible, however, it is ideal to spend at least a day here exploring Coffee museum Araku, the waterfalls and especially Borra Caves in Araku valley. Borra caves are naturally formed Stalactites and stalagmites caves that have interesting shapes that lend a surreal aura to the caves. I have been to such caves before – Mawsmai Caves is one of the top tourist places in Meghalaya and Halong Bay, Vietnam .

How to Reach Visakhapatnam

By Air Visakhapatnam airport is connected with many major cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad. The airport is 16 km away from the city centre.

I like the idea of a whole submarine turned into a museum. I’ve never been in one and yet my cousin did part of his military service in one… Did the navy make a point of serving high quality food onboard? The submarine museum looks very cool, with some fascinating history. It’s not something I would have expected to find. It looks like the Kailasagiri viewpoint is a must, and I could not resist Bheemili beach, even though you say it’s not that clean. I looks beautiful, so I hope it gets cleaned up.

That beach is particularly nice…but my partner would want to go to both of the museums – he loves military museums that let you into the planes and other machinery. And good tip about visiting the submarine at night – we have a submarine museum where I live and it gets hot during the day.

There are always places in the world that I have never heard of before – very exciting! The submarine I think great. I have also looked at one before and found it pretty tight. Being on the road for longer would not be for me. I like the beach. Can you take a nice bath there?

ఇక్కడికి వచ్చే పర్యాటకులు ఎంతో సరదాగా, ఎక్కువ సమయాన్ని గడుపుతారు. ఈ కొండపై ఎత్తైన తెల్లని శివ పార్వతుల విగ్రహలు ఉంటాయి. ఇవి ఎంతగానో ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. ఈ కైలాసగిరి పైకి వెళ్లేందుకు మెట్లు, రోడ్డు, రోప్ వే మార్గం ద్వారా పర్యాటకులు చేరుకోవచ్చు. వీటిలో రోప్ వే ప్రయాణం అనేది పర్యాటకులను ఎంతగానో ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. విశాఖకు వచ్చే ప్రతీ పర్యాటకులకి ఈ రోప్ వే అనేది మరపురాని విధంగా చేస్తుంది.

విశాఖ సాగర తీర అందాలను చూడాలి అనుకునే వారు కైలాసగిరి తప్పక ఆస్వాదించి తీరాలి. ఈ కైలాసగిరి రోప్ వే లో వెళ్లాలనుకుంటే రానూ పోను పెద్దలకు రూ.150, పిల్లలకు రూ.80 రుసుము పెట్టడం జరిగింది. ఈ రోప్ వే ఎక్కితే ఆ అనుభూతి చాలా బాగుందని పర్యాటకులు అంటున్నారు. ఈ రోప్ వే పైకి వెళ్లేందుకు ఉదయం 11 గంటల నుండి అందుబాటులో ఉంటుంది. రాత్రి 7:30 నిమిషాలకి నిలుపుదల చేయడం జరుగుతుంది.

కైలాసగిరిలో చాలా వరకు పిల్లల కోసం పార్కులు, ఆట పరికరాలు అన్నీ ఉంటాయి. కొండపై పెద్దలు, పిల్లలు ఎక్కేందుకు గుర్రపు స్వారీను కూడా ఎంజాయ్ చేయవచ్చు. పిల్లల నుంచి పెద్దల వరకూ అందరూ ఎంజాయ్ చేయడానికి ఇది అనువైన ప్రదేశం అని కైలాసగిరి చూసే సందర్శకులు మాటల్లో చెప్తున్నారు. ఇతర మార్గాల కంటే రోప్ వే ఎంతో అద్భుతంగా ఉందంటూ వర్ణిస్తున్నారు.

As Crystal Palace saw out their title winning season, our Lasses hold their heads high with a strong finish and an individual award for the best keeper in the league.

With a freshly brewed McDonald’s coffee in one hand and a stack of marmalade sandwiches in the other, this Lasses fan set off at 6am sharp from the Stadium of Light on the supporters’ coach down to South London for our final game of a thrilling season.

A campaign of brilliant highs and some frantic lows, watching the women bounce, hover and finally capitulate at the top of the table, the 2023-24 season has showcased one of the most positive Sunderland sides in recent memory.

Selhurst Park offered the Lasses the chance to demonstrate their skills on a top-grade pitch in front of a roaring 6796 fans. The only thing lacking was any legroom in the stands. Seriously, that stadium makes even Ryanair look generous for stretching your legs.

The line-up promised something a little different with emerging youth star Libbi McInnes starting as a number 10 behind a frontline of Jones, Scarr and Watson. Not sure if Mel has been re-watching Top Gun but she clearly felt the need for speed against top class opposition on Sunday.

The game started well and developed into a promising first half. Palace controlled the lion’s share of possession, estimated 60% from other reports, and had a couple of attempts at goal with Claudia Moan tipping their attempt effortlessly above her crossbar. Sunderland by comparison were comfortable in well drilled counters initiated by laser guided passes from Tash Fenton. Fenton was arguably player of the match with a cool display of orchestrated passes, dictating time and tempo with the consistent rhythm of a Swiss watch.

Louise Griffiths, with the impending danger of Japanese knotweed, grew into the game with each passing minute, threatening the structure of Palace’s attack and keeping Araya Dennis occupied and nullified.

Libbi McInnes proved herself capable and slotted into the side comfortably. For a player of her age and experience it was very encouraging to see such an assured performance from her, she’ll be an asset for our next promotion contention.

Both sides played well but neither was over-committing themselves in the first half, preferring to get the measure of the other by half time.

The second half saw Sunderland find a hidden gear and pull off some excellent counter attacking play. However, with the exception of a screaming long range shot (patent pending for Jenna Dear) that ricocheted off the crossbar, the Lasses struggled to register enough shots on target that threatened the keeper. It’s been a familiar theme in the closing stages of this side’s season and one that will need to be rectified by the coaches or transfer market this summer.

Nevertheless, the pressing and intimidation by Sunderland whenever Palace held the ball was a great sight that kept the away fans cheering throughout the match. As full time beckoned you could see that both sides were willing and able to play some great football, but neither was going to sacrifice enough defensive solidity to support a sustained attack that might result in a goal. A goalless draw would suffice for both sides and although neither capitulated with counter-attacks to the last minute, it felt the likely outcome.

With 2 minutes to go Grace McCatty walked onto the pitch to a roar of applause from the fans. Her 112 th appearance for Sunderland having steered this side through choppy waters and brought the team to touching distance of silverware, it was a fitting end to such a strong ambassador for the club.

The final whistle blew and with that Crystal Palace were champions. Claudia Moan won the Golden Glove for her 10 clean sheets and Sunderland can be proud of holding the very best in the division to 2 draws and only 1 goal conceded (Durham shipped 14 lol).

The team gathered and applauded the fans for their support before posing for a big photo and plenty of laughs. It’s been a real pleasure to watch them play this season, I’m just gutted we have to wait till August for it to start again.

It was midnight when the supporters coach eventually rolled back into the Stadium of Light’s car park. 13 hours of travel and not a minute of it wasted. The coffee and marmalade sandwiches gone, but the pride in this great side will roll on to the next season and we’ll be waiting for them.
