9 Best Tours In Varadero Cuba By A Frequent Visitor (2024)
Whether you have already decided to take your next Caribbean holiday to the paradisiacal beach heaven in Varadero or not, knowing all about the best tours in Varadero might make you just a little more determined and excited.
I have traveled regularly to Cuba for five years and visited Varadero multiple times, although I normally stay in Havana when I am there. Whisking off to Varadero is a great getaway whenever I need a little break from the busy and noisy Cuban capital.
To help you plan your Varadero holiday, here are the best tours and excursions you can find, both in, on, and out of the water.
1. Catamaran Trip Varadero To Cayo Blanco – My Favourite!
I have done this Varadero catamaran tour , and if you are anything like me, feeling blissful on blue waters and white palmy beaches, you will love this tour, too.
For this excursion, you will be picked up at your hotel and head to the Varadero marina, where a bright white catamaran is ready to go.
Enjoy an idyllic breezy trip out to a tranquil spot where you get to snorkel in the clear waters with coral reefs and tropical fish.
Then, the catamaran continues to Cayo Blanco, where you have around two hours to enjoy the paradise beach. Enjoy live music, have a fresh lunch, and maybe a piña colada or two.
You can also join a “meet-and-greet” with the dolphins living in a mangrove just across from Cayo Blanco.
The catamaran returns to shore around 3 p.m., and the party vibe on the trip back is often a bit higher than the departure in the morning, so prepare for some salsa and reggaeton on deck as you sail back to shore.

You don’t need to be in the capital, Havana, to enjoy the famous classic car tour roaming around; you find them all over the island.
Now, you can also take a traditional Classic American Car Tour in Varadero, which will take you all over the Hicacos peninsula to enjoy the scenery!
The ride takes you by Josóne Park, by the house of famous mobster Al Capone, and the Varadero town market, to mention a few things.
You will be picked up at your hotel at 10 am for the tour and returned to your doorstep at 12 with messy hair.

Yes, there are tours from Varadero to Havana !
No visit to Cuba is complete without spending at least one day in its vibrant capital city, Havana . Stroll the streets of the old historic city, marvel at the colonial-era architecture, and taste the famous cocktails.
In the afternoon, take a classic car tour and then find a rooftop terrace to take in the spectacular view of the city at sunset.
There’s also plenty of nightlife in Havana to enjoy, with live music and dancing in the many bars and clubs.
You can book an organized day tour from Varadero to Havana or book a ticket with the Viazul bus and stay in Havana casa particular for a night or two.
📍 EpicNomadLife Tip: Get a cute travel duffle bag that has room for your bikini, flip-flops, a change of clothes, and the necessities for your day trip. I love this one from Bagsmart!
4. Yumuri Valley Jeep Tour
You start your jeep tour at Coral Beach, a stunning natural enclave of crystalline waters, where you stop to snorkel an amazing coral reef, admiring the island’s rich marine diversity.
The tour continues to the incredible Cave of Saturn, which is home to two large caverns and a natural pool of emerald waters where you can swim in the cool cave water!
You will pass through the city of Matanzas before visiting Rancho Gaviota, where you will be welcomed with a cocktail, visit the farm (go horseback riding?), and enjoy a traditional Cuban lunch!
The last activity of the day is a thrilling speedboat ride on the Cánimar River before returning to Varadero in the afternoon!
5. Varadero Sugar, Rum & Tobacco Tour
Included in the Sugar, Rum & Tobacco tour are:
- Hotel pick-up and drop-off
- Transport by minibus
- A visit to a sugar factory and sugar cane plantation
- Cuban rum tasting and cigar testing
- English speaking guide
This day starts with a visit to a museum dedicated to sugar cane, learning about the history of the sugar industry in Cuba.
You will get to taste the Guarapo, a sweet sugar cane drink, and learn how to prepare one of the famous Cuban cocktails!
Then you’ll go to Cardenas town, where you can explore the charming city streets and admire its colonial architecture .
After a lunch break, you will head into a tasting of local rum and tobacco and learn about their important role in Cuban culture!
6. Matanzas & Bellamar Caves Tour
This Matanzas and Bellamar Caves Tour starts with you being picked up at your hotel in the morning and heading for Matanzas City!
You will explore Plaza de la Libertad, the neoclassical and baroque Cathedral of San Carlos Borromeo, and Plaza de la Vigia, where you will learn about the Corsair attacks of the past!
Then, you will visit a viewpoint of the Hermitage of Montserrate, which has an unbeatable panoramic view over the valley of Yumurí and the city of Matanzas.
Finally, you will explore the Bellamar Caves, which are more than 300,000 years old. Admire all the ancient stalactites and stalagmites and spend time exploring their interior halls.
You can marvel at the Manto de Colón, the Paso de la Lluvia, and the Huerto de las Zanahorias before you return to your hotel.
7. Guama and Hatiguanico River Trip
This amazing river trip’s first stop is the Peninsula Zapata National Park, and on the way, you will notice the beautiful contrasts between the Cuban countryside and coastline !
You will enjoy a fascinating visit to a crocodile farm before you continue to the coast, where you board a speedboat for a riveting rush of adrenaline!
The boat takes you across Laguna del Tesoro Lake and into the center of a spectacular natural wilderness encompassed by vegetation and water.
After the boat trip, you will explore Guamá and the Hatiguanico River, both places of tropical beauty, before a traditional lunch of pork, chicken, or fish, drinks, and coffee!
Before returning to your Varadero hotel, you can do some snorkeling to wrap up your day. If you are lucky, you might encounter some of the exotic species that live in these crystal waters!
8. Day Trip Trinidad, El Nicho & Cienfuegos
For this tour, you’ll start this excursion day by making your way up to El Nicho , a protected area with a stunning waterfall from the River Habanill in the Topes de Collantes Natural Park!
Swim in crystal-clear natural pools while parrots are perched in palm trees, and you’ll also have a traditional Cuban lunch here.
Then, you are off to the historic colonial city of Trinidad , protected by UNESCO; you can explore the ancient streets and museums in the city.
Lastly, you will visit Cienfuegos , a beautiful coastal city with lots of French influences, where you will do the panoramic tour of Punta Gorda, which is an outing spot for the locals.
Also, see the Hotel Jagua and the imposing Palacio del Valle and José Martí Park. And you don’t need to stress home to dinner, as you will get it served here!
9. Varadero Excursion To Vinales Valley
Even from Varadero, you can manage to visit Vinales Valley west of Havana, a lush green UNESCO-protected part of Cuba that is also home to the famous Cuban cigars!
This day tour is really long, as there is quite a bit of transport time involved. I have only made the Vinales day trip from Havana, which is a great experience, so I can not review this particular tour.
You get to experience the Mural de la Prehistoria, visit a tobacco farm, sample cigars, and rum, and get a demonstration of how it is done. Lunch in Vinales Town is on your own, and you will also visit the botanical garden and view.
What this tour does not have is a visit to Cueva del Indio and its hidden waterways, which are also stunning. But for a day trip of this magnitude, you get a lot.

Our pick of the 11 Best Varadero Day Trips
The top places to visit as a day trip from Varadero are those which will give you a different flavor of Varadero, but also those that aren’t too far away – spending hours and hours traveling can eat into your holiday time! So let’s start with our top picks for Varadero Day Trips with one of the most popular trips to take from Varadero – a day trip to Havana.
1. Varadero Day Trip to Havana – The best cultural Varadero day trip
It will take you around 2 hours each way from Varadero to Havana by private transfer. (check prices and availability of private transfers to Havana here ). You can also take the Viazul Bus to Varadero from Havana, but it’s not really an option for a day trip – as the bus stations aren’t convenient and neither are the bus times!
This private day trip to Havana from Varadero is a great option if you want to see the sights of Havana, but not commit to more than a day. It is a full 12-hour day trip to Havana. On pick up from your hotel, you’ll head straight to Havana and right into Old Havana – the capital’s historic center. And it won’t be long before you’re surrounded by the charming colonial streets and the stunning classic cars here. In this full-day tour of Havana, you’ll get to see such sights as the Capitol Building, the bars that Ernest Hemingway frequented, Havana port, and Morro Castle. You’ll also get to see the Museum of the Revolution (one of our top things to see in Havana ) and you’ll learn about the history of Cuba, from its foundation in the 16th century to the days following the Revolution.
Don’t worry there’s also a break for lunch where you’ll get to experience one of Havana’s paladares (private restaurants) and then it’s on to the more modern Havana – the fashionable neighborhoods of Vedado and Miramar overlooking Havana’s famous Malecón esplanade. This day trip to Havana from Varadero also takes in the enormous Plaza de la Revolución Square, where the famous giant portrait of Che Guevara by artist Enrique Ávila is located. Here, we will also admire the elegant Monument to José Martí. You can check the cost and availability of this day trip to Havana from Varadero here.
At the end of your tour in Havana, you’ll be delivered back to your hotel in Varadero for a well-earned cocktail or two!
2. Cayo Blanco Catamaran Trip from Varadero with Lobster Lunch
Cayo Blanco is a deserted white sand island with a dreamy beach, getting to it on a sailing catamaran trip from Varadero is a delight. This is the most popular day trip from Varadero – sail on the stunning Caribbean sea to a desert island and enjoy a lobster lunch with an open bar. What’s not to love?
On this fabulous sailing trip from Varadero , you’ll be collected from your hotel and then board a luxury catamaran and sail for about two hours, heading for Cayo Blanco. There’s a coral reef here, so you’ll be able to snorkel and discover Cuba’s marine life, lie in the sun, or just swim in the stunning sea. While you’re enjoying your free time your crew is preparing a delicious lunch, which includes lobster and an open bar of Cuban cocktails, which you can enjoy on the beach or the catamaran. The trip includes access to snorkel equipment, although this is one of the items that we recommend you bring to Cuba. At the end of the day, you’ll be taken back to your hotel in Varadero for a snooze or cocktail hour. Your choice. Check out the options for this fabulous sailing day trip from Varadero.
3. Visit Vinales from Varadero on a day trip
This 13-hour day trip from Varadero to Vinales Valley is an amazing day out from Varadero. You’ll get to explore the UNESCO World Heritage site that includes the famous tobacco plantations of Viñales , the largest tobacco producer on the island! You’ll also get to see how Cuban cigars are traditionally rolled and visit the Vinales Botanical Garden. There’s more about what’s included here.
Then you’ll want to stop by the infamous Mural of Prehistory, painted on Jurassic rocks and one of the largest open-air frescoes in the world! A final stop in the Vinales Valley is the “balcony of Vinales” or the Los Jazmines viewpoint. It’s a fab place for a photo stop. If you have more time, then our guide to the Vinales Valley is here , or if you just want to visit for the day, then this day trip to Vinales from Varadero is fabulous. This really is the best way to visit Vinales from Varadero.
4. Take a Day Trip from Varadero to Dive the Bay of Pigs
We spent several days in Playa Giron and Playa Larga, exploring the Bay of Pigs area, but the primary reason we went there was to dive the Bay of Pigs. You can read about our adventures here . But it’s now also possible to take a day trip from Varadero to the Bay of Pigs to dive!
This is an AMAZING deal. Honestly, we paid the same amount for this back in 2017! (and that was just to dive, no transport included!!).
This diving day trip to the Bay of Pigs gives you two dives, and all equipment is provided as well as the transport to and from your hotel in Varadero. You’ll be provided with an English-speaking instructor too! It’s a fabulous trip and you’ll love it. It may also be possible for non-divers to join you and snorkel as well! You’ll need to ask at your hotel in Varadero, as it’s currently not possible to book a diving trip to the Bay of Pigs online.
5. Speedboat and National Park Day Trip from Varadero
If you want to get back to nature and combine adrenalin and the natural world then this is the Varadero day trip for you. You’ll not only get to visit the Peninsula Zapata National Park but also head to a crocodile farm, and then boarding a speedboat, you’ll cross the Laguna del Tesoro lake and get to enjoy a glorious natural wilderness surrounded by water an d vegetation. This tour visits Guamá and the Hatiguanico River, and is a fabulous way to explor e both the coast and inland from Varadero. Check out more details, the tour includes lunch and you’ll also get time to snorkel (equipment is provided). It’s a fabulous day out from Varadero.
6. Head to Matanzas for a day trip from Varadero + see the Bellamar Caves
You can get to Matanzas quite easily – it’s around 50 kilometers (31 miles) from Varadero. The Viazul Bus (see our guide for how these buses work here ) runs from Varadero to Matanzas 3 times a day, but it’s not always a good time for making a day trip to Matanzas from Varadero. You must buy a ticket at least an hour ahead of time from the Viazul terminal on the corner of Calle 36 and the highway – one block off of the main street and availability is not good at the last minute.
You’ll also be able to grab a taxi on the street or flag down a shared van. Always agree on the price before you get in and make sure that you know if the price is for the car or per person.
You can also book a private transfer to Matanzas – check prices here.
If you’re taking a day trip to Matanzas you’ll want to see at least some of the 17 bridges that this “city of bridges” is famous for. The Puente de Bacunayagua is the highest in Cuba, resting 100 meters near the River Yumuri. Taking a walk around the center of Matanzas is interesting – you’ll want to stop at the San Severino Castle Museum where you can take a guided tour of the castle and fortress and understand a little about slavery in Cuba too. Wander through Parque Libertad – a lovely green space at the heart of Matanzas. The Sauto Theatre is also rather picturesque. For museum lovers, the Pharmaceutical Museum (Museo Farmaceutico) in front of Parque Libertad, is a stunning display of a 19th-century pharmacy and a guided tour is well worth it. (I think it’s better than the one in Havana). Finally, while you’re out this way, I’d recommend including a trip to Bellamar Caves. They’re some of the biggest and most impressive in the Caribbean (there are more caves also in the Vinales region to explore). The Bellamar Caves were discovered in 1861 and are about 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the southeast of Matanzas. Guided tours are available and entry costs around US$8.
An alternative to Bellamar Caves or an addition even is the Cueva de Saturno (Saturn Cave) – it’s a cenote – which has stalactites, blind cavefish, and cave shrimp. Swimming in the freshwater here is very popular and you can also arrange to dive in the cenote. Entry costs US$5 and the Cueva de Saturno is 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from Matanzas.
For a great lunch with a fabulous view head to Chef Bahia on the main coast road to Varadero.
If you’re considering a day trip from Varadero to Matanzas, we really do recommend either organizing your own itinerary and route, planning it via a private transfer/taxi, and making the most of your day in Matanzas or booking a tour that takes you to all the important places.
7. Visit the Yumuri Valley on a day trip from Varadero
The Yumuri Valley is one of Cuba’s most scenic natural areas, it follows the Yumuri River for 54 kilometers (33.5 miles) and is recognized for its biodiversity and archaeological sites. There’s a 150-meter high mountain ridge that surrounds the river which provides several great vantage points to the valley. As these are rough roads and the tracks through the valley aren’t paved, it’s a great option for taking an off-road 4×4 jeep to see the valley. The best option for visiting the Yumuri Valley from Varadero is to take a tour that collects you from your hotel in Varadero and takes you to where the 4×4 jeeps are located.
Check out where you can go in the Yumuri Valley here.
And this is where it gets awesome – as you’ll get to drive your own jeep through the jungle and sugar cane fields! You will need a valid driving license, but if you don’t have one or don’t feel like driving, then you can also hire a driver. As well as driving through the river valley you’ll be able to enjoy snorkeling at Coral Beach where there’s an impressive coral reef. Then you’ll get a speedboat ride on the Caminar River through the rainforest. There’s a cultural performance and a traditional Cuban lunch is also provided. You can then fully experience the Yumuri Valley with either a visit to a coffee plantation, a trip on the river, or a horseback ride through the forest.
This Yumuri Valley day trip continues with a visit to the Saturnos Cave – where there are two large caverns and a natural pool – you can swim in the pool too. This gloriously natural tour from Varadero finishes up with a visit to the El Campesino agroecological farm – it’s a sustainable eco-farm and there’s loads to learn there.
This tour is a great option if you’d like to have a mix of activities while seeing some of the stunning natural landscapes of Cuba and it includes pick up and drop off from your hotel, an English-speaking guide, Snorkel equipment at Coral Beach (although we recommend bringing your own to Cuba), a boat trip on the Caminar river, entry to the Cave of Saturn, horseback riding in Rancho Gaviota and your food and drink.
8. Sugar, Rum, and Tobacco Tour from Varadero
There’s nothing like a taste of Cuba tour – and this is definitely that – you’ll get to visit a sugar cane plantation and taste Cuban rum and tobacco ! While technically you could visit all these places by yourself, you’ll need to have some really good Spanish and a big local knowledge, so this guided tour, with an English-speaking guide and driver, is a fabulous way to cram a whole lot of taste into one day!
The first stop is a sugar cane museum where you’ll learn about how sugar cane is grown, and how its processed, the tools and machines used for this. And of course, there’s tasting – the first taste is guarapo , a refreshing sweet drink made from sugar cane, before learning about one of Cuba’s famous cocktails and then making it.
Check availability on this tour here
This tour then heads to the town of Cardenas, which has lovely colonial architecture and quite charming streets. You’ll get to follow in the footsteps of the Arechabala family, creators of the famous Havana Club rum in a horse-drawn carriage ride around the town before you stop for lunch. After lunch, which is included, you’ll get to taste local rum and tobacco while learning about their importance to both the Cuban culture and economy. When you’re finished you’ll be dropped back at your hotel in Varadero.
Fancy this sugar cane, rum, and tobacco history and tasting day trip from Varadero? Check more details and book your place now!
9. Learn about the history of rum and cigars in a Varadero Day Trip to Cardenas
It was in Cardenas that Havana Club Rum was born, and that makes it a great place to learn about the history of rum in Cuba. There’s lots more to see in Varadero though – from the Battle of Ideas Museum – where there’s heaps of Cuban history and a fabulous historic city center. As this is the home of Havana Club there are also artisans based here, who make rum barrels by hand! If you’ve rented a car in Cuba, you can get to Cardenas from Varadero quite easily, but if not, then this day trip to Cardenas from Varadero is a great option. It includes a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic center, accompanied by rum tastings and a visit to Callejón Gastón, to explore Cuban religions and then start exploring Cuban cigars. Cardenas is a delight and a great place to visit on a day trip from Varadero. Want to know more about Cuban Cigars? My full guide is here.
10. Take a Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, and Trinidad Tour from Varadero
You’ll get to see some of Cuba’s most important historic and cultural sites with this tour of Cienfuegos, Santa Clara, and Trinidad from Varadero. It’s a long day with a start at 0620 – although you will get a stop for breakfast en route! In Santa Clara, you’ll visit a monument in memory of the Cuban Revolution – the armored train and then the resting place of Ernesto Che Guevara. After visiting Santa Clara , you’ll continue to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Trinidad. It’s here that you’ll get a typical Cuban lunch and then visit Parque Central, the Church of the Holy Trinity, and the handicraft market. You’ll want to make time while you’re here to try the famous Cuban Cocktail from Trinidad, the Canchanchara – it was invented here.
The next stop is Cienfuegos , where you’ll see the Prado promenade, the statue of famous musician Benny Moré, and the Moorish architecture of the Palacio del Valle and its Moorish architecture. This is a whistle-stop tour of some of Cuba’s most important cities and a great way to see them all if you have a short amount of time in Cuba – check out the timings and make your booking here.
11. Take a Varadero Day Trip to Cienfuegos, El Nicho and Trinidad
This day trip from Varadero takes in the Topes de Collantes National Park as well as the UNESCO World Heritage City of Trinidad and the lovely Cienfuegos. It’s an early start, so there will be a breakfast stop en-route and you’ll arrive at El Nicho, one of the protected areas in the Topes de Collantes Natural Park. (Read about Cuba’s National Parks here ) It’s a great opportunity to cool down as you’ll visit one of the stunning waterfalls of the Habanilla and there are some great natural pools here that you can jump into! After you’ve cooled down you’ll have a traditional lunch before heading to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Trinidad where you’ll get to explore all that makes this city so special – and don’t forget to make time for Trinidad’s special cocktail – the canchanchara.
The final location on this history and nature-inspired trip from Varadero is Cienfuegos – where you’ll take a panoramic tour of Punta Gorda and see the Hotel Jagua and the imposing Palacio del Valle, decorated with Moorish and Gothic details. Before heading back to Varadero there’s more food included too and you’ll be back in Varadero in time for cocktails.
If you’re looking for history and nature combined on a Varadero day trip, then this is a fabulous option – you can read more and book your place here.

Varadero, located on the sinuous 20km-long Hicacos Peninsula, stands at the vanguard of Cuba’s most important industry – tourism. As the largest resort in the Caribbean, it guards a huge, unsubtle and constantly evolving stash of hotels (over 60), shops, water activities and poolside entertainment; though its trump card is its beach, an uninterrupted 20km stretch of blond sand that is undoubtedly one of the Caribbean's best. But, while this large, tourist-friendly mega-resort may be essential to the Cuban economy, it offers little in the way of unique Cuban experiences.

If you’re planning a trip to the beautiful beaches of Cuba, Varadero is likely at the top of your list. At Cuba’s most famous resort town, the miles of pristine white sand routinely earn Varadero Beach a top spot among the best beaches in the world .
As locals, we’ve traveled to Varadero far too many times to count In our ultimate travel guide to Varadero, Cuba, you’ll find the best of what Varadero has to offer , including the best things to do in Varadero (other than visiting the beach!), and where to stay in Varadero all all price points.

Varadero, Cuba
Located on the Hicacos Peninsula along Cuba’s northern coast, the beach town of Varadero is just two hours east of the island’s vibrant capital city of Havana . This long, skinny peninsula juts out into crystal-clear turquoise waters, creating a semi-protected extension of nearly 10 miles (18 kilometers) of picture-perfect beaches .
For years, Varadero has been the ultimate resort town in Cuba, easily the most popular and built-up beach destination on the island. Varadero is popular with Cubans and foreigners alike , all here to enjoy the lovely Varadero Beach and the many other attractions and activities the area has to offer.
Despite sections of the beach being overtaken by the numerous resorts in Varadero , Varadero Beach is entirely public. There is more than enough public beach here to enjoy, whether you’re looking for a more lively party spot or a totally quiet corner of sand.
Varadero’s proximity to Havana makes it a popular day-trip destination for a quick escape, though many visitors stick around for an extended beach vacation. You’ll enjoy just as great a beach vacation renting an apartment a few blocks from the beach as you will at a resort, making Varadero a potentially more affordable island vacation than you might be expecting.
No matter what you’re planning to do on your Cuba itinerary , Varadero is well worth a trip. Not only does its location – just a few hours from Havana and Trinidad – make it an accessible destination for visitors, but its beaches alone are worth traveling for.

Varadero Cuba Map
Our interactive Varadero Cuba map includes all of our favorite spots and recommendations in Varadero – restaurants, hotels and resorts, and the scuba shop we recommend – plus some essential locations in town you’ll need to know.
It’s easy to see how simple Varadero travel is when seeing how it’s just one long peninsula. Click away to get a feel for Varadero; you can even download our Varadero Cuba map for your trip.
Varadero Beach
If you’re coming to Varadero, you’re most certainly planning on visiting the beach. Even after visiting some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and around the world, I’m always floored when I step over the dunes and onto the white sands of Varadero Beach.
On the main beachfront road in Varadero (Avenida Primera, which turns into Avenida Playa), there are public beach access points every few blocks amidst restaurants, bars, and cafes. This allows anyone to easily access the water and sand on Varadero Beach.
From our experience, there aren’t any tricks to finding the best spot or any special sections of the beach to visit. Some sections of the beach have more neighboring restaurants and cafes. Other areas are lined with houses and apartments and have a more relaxed vibe. It’s all about what you’re looking for from your beach day.

Things To Do in Varadero Cuba
Beyond just going to the beach, there are plenty of things to do in Varadero. So many, in fact, that we wrote an entire guide to the best things to do in Varadero . Make sure to give that a read before your trip, but we’ve listed some of the absolute highlights below:
1. Visit Varadero Resorts (or, Spend The Night!)
One option for beachgoers looking for more amenities for their beach day is to take advantage of the resort space at some of Varadero’s favorite spots by renting chairs and umbrellas or even getting a day rate with meals included at a resort if you want to use all their resources – including pools.
You can take advantage of a day pass at almost any resort in town. Just walk up to the resort on the beach and inquire. This is a great (relatively inexpensive) way to use a chair for the day and enjoy the hotel amenities, even if you don’t choose to stay there.

2. Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving
Varadero Beach is not Cuba’s most well-known dive spot – check out Jardines de la Reina for that! – there is a lot to see under these crystal-clear waters.
Snorkeling and scuba diving excursions are offered by dive shops and tour providers in town. ScubaLibre is a reputable snorkeling and diving company, and they have a variety of excursion types, including a snorkeling excursion to the cave systems nearby – we recommend going with them!
Alternatively, book a catamaran trip to Cayo Blanco , a nearby white-sand cay just off the shore from Varadero. The catamaran excursion includes stops along the way for snorkeling, and you can also snorkel at Cayo Blanco. This is a great way to get in some snorkeling while seeing one of Cuba’s stunning cays all at once.

3. Swim With Dolphins
There are a variety of companies in Varadero that offer swimming with dolphin excursions for those interested in this fun activity! You’ll have several options in Varadero if you’re looking to swim with dolphins, though most travelers head to Varadero’s Delfinario for dolphin shows and to swim with dolphins.
While you won’t probably see dolphins swimming from the beaches of Varadero, the locals know where to find them, and there are a variety of excursions and activities built around this. Some of the catamaran excursions in Varadero also offer additional experience add-ons to swim with dolphins , so if you’re considering both experiences, it may be best to combine them.
4. Ride in a Vintage American Car
Taking a tour in a vintage American car is generally an activity that visitors will save for Havana, but it can be a beautiful way to see Varadero as well. Even if you have already done a similar tour in Havana or plan to, cruising past the water in a vintage convertible is a fantastic way to enjoy Varadero!
You’ll see old cars all around in Varadero as you explore the town and probably will be asked if you want to ride, though you can also book in advance online. Booking in advance is a great way to avoid the annoyance of haggling and will save you from having to bring even more cash to Cuba.
What to Pack for Cuba
Check out our Ultimate Cuba Packing List to help you pack for your trip – we’re sharing exactly what to bring to Cuba and what we never travel without.
5. Visit Cayo Blanco on a Catamaran
Cayo Blanco, a nearby white-sand cay just across the water from Varadero Beach is a favorite day trip from Varadero . Hop on one of the many catamaran trips to Cayo Blanco that depart from the beach for one of the best ways to get out on the water and enjoy sailing during your Varadero stay.
These all-inclusive day trips include lunch and drinks, as well as all of the gear you’ll need for snorkeling and enjoying a day at the beach. Trips can also be combined with opportunities to swim with dolphins if you book ahead.
Note: Cuban citizens aren’t allowed to take part in these catamaran excursions, given regulations about Cubans boarding boats, so if you’re traveling with Cuban friends or family, this isn’t the excursion for you, unfortunately.

6. Visit the Cueva de Ambrosio
Located just a few miles from Varadero, the Cueva de Ambrosio is one of the largest caves of an expansive network of caves running underground along the north of Cuba. Small group cave excursions are popular half-day trips from Varadero .
You’ll be wowed by the stalactites and stalagmites from above and below as you explore the cave. Expecting an incredibly hot weather day during your trip to Varadero? Exploring the cave is a great way to cool off on a hot afternoon and avoid getting burned at the beach.
Where To Eat in Varadero
If you’re not staying in one of Varadero’s all-inclusive resorts and are looking for the best place to eat in Varadero, there are plenty of delicious options in the center of town. Most restaurants are located on the main road running parallel to the beach (Avenida Primera, which also branches out into Avenida Playa), quite easily accessible in this easily walkable area.
However, you’ll also find some great spots a bit further from the beach on the side streets that run perpendicular to the beach. If you want to find something less expensive and more local, any of the side streets branching off from the beachside road will have small eateries scattered with options locals frequent, including some of those we recommend below.
Recommended anywhere in Varadero is, of course, the seafood – you’ll get some fantastic bargains on lobster and fresh fish. Prices pale in comparison to prices back home , and I definitely consider eating seafood among the best things to do in Varadero .
La Vaca Rosada
The rooftop terrace and barbecue at La Vaca Rosada make this restaurant one of our favorites in town. You can’t go wrong with any of the seafood dishes on the menu, and they also have delicious mixed drinks. Easily accessible on a side street off of the beachfront avenue, it’s not as boisterous (or touristy!) as some of Varadero’s other spots… and the food is even better.
La Vaca Rosada | $$ | #102 Calle 21
Long a favorite in Varadero, La Rampa is a cozy, unpretentious restaurant well known for having some of the best lobster in Varadero. The restaurant is small, so arrive early if you don’t want to wait for a table. Or, even better, stop by for lunch or earlier in the afternoon to make a reservation for dinner – the secret is starting to get out about this gem.
La Rampa | $$ | Calle 43 y Avenida Primera
Marisquería Laurent
Beachfront Marisquería Laurent is all about the views, though its menu is nothing to scoff at. Enjoy waterfront views on an expansive dining patio as you dig into big portions of seafood, with fresh grilled fish, lobster, and grilled shrimp and prawns being the stars of the menu.
Marisquería Laurent | $$ – $$$ | Calle 31 y Avenida Playa
Salsa Suarez
Once you’ve eaten your weight in seafood and Cuban dishes in Varadero, head to Salsa Suarez for a great array of international dishes. Pizza, pasta, and even sushi are on the menu here , though of course, you can also opt for some of Varadero’s best seafood if you just can’t get enough. Right in the heart of town, this is one of our favorite places to eat in Varadero for a slightly nicer meal.

Where To Stay in Varadero Cuba
Varadero has an abundance of places to stay, with a great selection of resorts in Varadero and an even more extensive selection of rental properties. Prices vary significantly, making a beach getaway in Varadero either quite affordable or very expensive.
Royalton Hicacos Resort & Spa
Best Adults-Only Resort in Varadero
The Royalton Hicacos Resort & Spa is one of the best resorts in Cuba , and our top recommendation among resorts in Varadero. Palapas on the beach for relaxing common areas with thatched roofs near the pool are luxurious and breezy and updated furnishings and excellent service make it easily the best resort in town.
Royalton Hicacos Resort & Spa sits on an unmatched stretch of pristine, white-sand Varadero Beach and has tons of amenities and activities to keep you busy. This resort is the best adults-only option in Varadero.
Reviews and Bookings: Royalton Hicacos Resort & Spa
Iberostar Selection Varadero
Best Family-Friendly Resort in Varadero
One of our top recommendations for family-friendly resorts in Varadero is the Iberostar Selection Varadero , another resort pick that lands on our list of among the best resorts in Cuba . This resort’s excellent kids club and additional babysitting services ensure that kids and teens always have plenty to do during their stay.
Iberostar Selection Varadero is undoubtedly family-friendly, but this resort has plenty for those traveling without kids, too. Four outdoor pools, a gorgeous spa and wellness center, five restaurants, a golf course, and plenty of water sports options abound.
Reviews and Bookings: Iberostar Selection Varadero
Melia Internacional Varadero
Long a favorite all-inclusive resort in Varadero, the Melia International Varadero is one of the most well-appointed and luxurious resorts you’ll find in town. The resort’s pool area is enormous, with plenty of outdoor bars and dining options, as well as kid-friendly spaces and a massive beachfront on the pristine Varadero Beach.
Travelers will find everything they need within the bounds of the resort, but the resort’s location, just a few minutes walk from the downtown center of Varadero, makes for easy exploring and convenience
Reviews and Bookings: Melia International Varadero
Hotels and Guesthouses in Varadero Cuba
The majority of the hotels in Varadero Cuba are all-inclusive resorts , which can boast incredible package deals for those looking to stay for a few days or longer. Most hotels in Varadero that are not all-inclusive are more like homestays or bed and breakfasts , sometimes with just several rooms for rent.
These are our favorite boutique hotels and casa particular guest houses in Varadero:
Casa de Betty and Jorge is a bed and breakfast that feels much more like a small hotel than a traditional guesthouse or rental. There is a lovely patio with tables and rocking chairs for evening drinks or morning coffee, and several rooms with a variety of configurations. The owners – Betty and Jorge – are gems and are willing to help guests explore Varadero.
Reviews and Bookings: Casa de Betty and Jorge
Casa Marta Margarita ($)
Casa Marta Margarita includes two apartments, both of which feature kitchenettes, perfect for families or longer stays in Varadero. You’ll also find a lovely, shaded terrace with tables and rockers. This guesthouse is along one of Varadero’s main thoroughfares and just steps from the beach.
Reviews and Bookings: Casa Marta Margarita
Villa Obdulia is a lovely, budget-friendly little guesthouse located in one of the best and liveliest parts of Varadero, close to the beach and all the restaurants and cafes you could ever want to visit. The rooms are simple, and there is a great terrace with long chairs and tables to enjoy breakfast in the morning.

Travel Essential
Don’t think about traveling to Cuba without a good VPN (Virtual Private Network) . Using a VPN while connecting to the internet is an easy way to keep your personal information safe from hackers and trackers. We’ve used NordVPN for years and couldn’t recommend it more – it’s a must for safety online, especially in Cuba.
Getting to Varadero
Varadero is one of the most accessible beach destinations in Cuba. Wherever your Cuba itinerary takes you, you’ll have no trouble getting to Varadero, especially from Havana:
Buses from Havana to Varadero
Varadero is located about two hours east of Havana, making it a perfect day trip from Havana but an even better overnight trip. The easiest option for transport from Havana to Varadero is by Viazul buses. Buses depart from the central bus terminal in Havana (Terminal de Omnibuses), near the Plaza de la Revolución.
Bus tickets from Havana to Varadero will cost about $9 in Cuban pesos for a one-way ticket . You can find the current bus schedule on the Viazul website , but buses are advertised to leave Havana at 8:30 AM and 4:40 PM .
Taxis from Havana to Varadero
If you’re not interested in taking a bus, plenty of private options are available . Many taxi drivers will gladly accept a day off from their regularly scheduled itinerary to bring travelers to Varadero. There are private companies dedicated to private transport and small group excursions that split transportation costs, making them quite affordable.
If you don’t want to book Varadero transportation ahead of time, ask your homestay host or staff at your hotel in Havana for private transportation recommendations . They’ll be able to find a reliable friend with a taxi or private car who can drive you or a tour company that would do so .

Flights to Varadero
Varadero’s Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport is the second busiest airport in Cuba, after Jose Martí International Airport in Havana . Most flights to Varadero are from Canada, Mexico, and several major European cities.
Flights from the United States to Varadero were recently resumed, and now you’ll find regular flights between U.S. cities and Varadero, as well as flights to Varadero from Latin America, Canada, and Europe.
Buses are available to take visitors from the Varadero airport to the center of town for about 10 USD per passenger on the half-hour journey. There are also plenty of taxi options available at the airport – taxis cost around 25-30 USD and will get you to the center of Varadero in around 20 minutes.
Havana vs. Varadero
We often have travelers write us as they debate Havana vs. Varadero on their Cuba itinerary. However, there is no way to compare Havana and Varadero!
Havana is a beautiful and historic city and cultural hub, and one of the most unique and interesting cities in the world. Varadero, on the other hand, is home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean . The experiences you’ll have in either of these places are completely different, and recommending one over the other is impossible without knowing what you’re looking for .
If you’re having a hard time deciding what to do on a trip to Cuba, I recommend seeing if your schedule allows for time in both of these places , even if you spend a longer chunk of time in one city and just a day in another. Both Havana and Varadero Beach are destinations you won’t want to miss in Cuba .
While I’ll choose Havana over Varadero every time if I’m forced to choose, Varadero is the best beach trip from Havana, in my opinion . While there are beaches that are closer to Havana , such as the beaches at Playas del Este , Varadero is the nearest beach to Havana which makes the list of the best beaches in Cuba.

Varadero to Havana day trip – Everything you need to know
Are you visiting the beautiful beach paradise of Varadero and are looking for great day trip ideas? Havana, the Cuban capital is a must see destination for anyone visiting Cuba. Whether you’re a first timer or are returning year-after-year, the ever-changing city of Havana is a unique experience that has something for everyone.
Havana has a historic past that dates back to colonial times. It’s home to an abundance of colourful, colonial buildings, grand fortresses, bustling squares and a number of interesting museums, monuments, buildings and tourist attractions.
As Havana is only a 2 hour drive from Varadero, it’s entirely possible to see the city in an action-packed full day tour. In this guide, we share the best options for getting from Varadero to Havana, tour ideas, costs, and answers to all of your questions. Plan the ultimate day exploring Havana!
Is it possible to visit Havana for the day from Varadero?
It’s definitely possible to visit Havana in one day from Varadero. Whilst you can spend multiple days exploring Havana properly, you can also get a great feel of the city in a single day. It’s a popular port for cruise ships that visit for one day, but also for tourists stopping by from nearby towns such as Varadero.
If you set off from Varadero first thing on a morning around 8am, you’ll arrive at 10am and will have the entire day to see the sites. You can then head back to your Varadero hotel in the evening. Some tour options allow you to sample nightlife and return as late as 2am! Others focus on sightseeing during the day and you’ll be back in Vardero between 6 – 8pm.
In summary, you can indeed see many of Havana’s top sights in one full day.
How to get from Varadero to Havana
There are a few different ways to get from Varadero to Havana and vice versa. These are:
Classic car private day tour
In our opinion, the best way to get from Varadero to Havana on a day trip is by booking a classic car private tour. There are many tours available, which you can view online here . However, we personally recommend Cuban Compass Tours . We tried a few tour companies during our time in Cuba and these guys were the best by far.
A classic car private tour to Havana will pick you up at your hotel in Varadero, usually around 8am. You’ll then drive 2 hours to Havana and spend the day exploring a variety of amazing sights ( view a sample itinerary in our guide here ). You’ll have a personal tour guide with you throughout the day, with time by yourself to grab lunch and drink if you wish. You also have a private driver.
Private tours generally have set itineraries so you see as much as possible in a short amount of time. However, you do have the option to customise the itinerary a little bit. Want to see a particular site? They’ll make it happen. This is great for returning visitors to Havana that have already seen a few places and want to explore different attractions.
Private tours vary in price depending on the length of day and the company you book with. You can opt for a brief 6 hour duration in Havana, a longer 11-hour trip, or go all day until midnight. Private classic car tours are bookable directly with a tour operator. Expect to pay around $90 per person for a private day trip to Havana.
Group day tour
A more cost effective Varadero to Havana day trip option is to book a group tour. Most hotels in Varadero, plus your vacation travel operator, offer group coach tours to the capital every day of the week. The experience is very similar to a private tour, just with a group. A group tour guide will pick you up at your hotel first thing on a morning, departing straight to Havana after picking up other guests.
You’ll see a set number of sights in the city in a full day itinerary, which can’t be customised. Different group tours to Havana are available depending on your hotel and the tour company you book with, but expect a shorter 6-hour tour option, or a longer 11-hour ‘premium tour’.
We personally recommend looking at Sunwing’s or Tui’s group tour option if you’d like to book a group tour. Group tours start from around $55 per person.
If you can afford the small additional cost, we personally recommending going for a private classic car tour over the group option. It’s more intimate, you won’t have to wait around for other tourists and will see more during your day in Havana.

Very similar to a private tour but with 2 x one-way drives, a simple taxi ride from Varadero will get you to Havana in 2 hours. You can book a taxi from a reputable firm by browsing online here . Alternatively, head into Downtown Varadero and negotiate a price with a taxi driver.
A taxi is the best option for those that want to explore Havana themselves without a guide, with no restrictions on time or attractions. A one-way trip will cost you around $100. As such, we personally think it’s more cost effective to book a private tour with a guide for the day.
Technically an option to get from Varadero to Havana, but not one we recommend, the local Viazul Bus picks passengers up in Downtown Varadero and heads onward to Havana, with multiple stops on the way. A bus ticket will cost you less than 10 dollars. At the time of writing, the buses in Cuba are extremely crowded and locals struggle to get onboard, no matter the time of day. They can also be difficult to navigate if you don’t speak much Spanish.
We personally recommend going for a tour or taxi option and leaving the buses to the locals. This may change in the future as the situation improves in Cuba and tourism evolves.
There is one final way of getting from Varadero to Havana, the train. However, this involves a bus to get to the station and the train itself is often out of service, or takes a very long time. For a smooth, enjoyable journey, we’ve left this option off our list.
What are the best tours for visiting Havana from Varadero?
For private classic car tours to Havana, we highly recommend Cuban Compass Tours . As listed on their website, they offer the following day tours from Varadero to Havana. Each can be customised.
- Havana Highlights Tour – 8am – 5pm
- Havana Twilight Tour – 8am – 9pm
The following group tours are cheaper day-trip alternatives:
- Havana Standard City Tour
- Havana Premium City Tour (Group)
You can browse the top Varadero tour companies on TripAdvisor here . Most offer Havana tours from Varadero.
How much does it cost to get from Varadero to Havana?
The exact cost depends on who you book with, time of the year, negotiated prices with taxis, etc, but expect to pay the following:
- Taxi (one-way) – From $100 / €96 / £82
- Private classic car tour – From $90 / €86 / £74 per person (couple)
- Group tour – From $55 / €52 / £45 per person
- Local bus – $10 / €9 / £8 or less per person
How long do I need (hours) to explore Havana in one day?
As mentioned above, you can see a lot in a one day in Havana day trip from Varadero. The longer you’re there, the more you’ll see! It can be quite a long and exhausting day, so many people opt for a shorter 6 hour trip, departing Varadero at 8am, arriving into Havana and 10am and then departing back to Varadero at 4pm.
Other options include a longer stay, where you can have both lunch and dinner in Havana, see a show or the live canon battery parade at the fortress, then head back to Varadero at 9pm.
There’s also a third option, for all those that want to sample Havana nightlife. You can extend your tour to midnight. This will give you a good experience of the bars, or the popular Club Tropicana cabaret show.
For first time visitors, we recommend a tour than lasts until around 6pm, heading back to your hotel in Varadero for 8pm. That way, you don’t get back so late and can relax back at your hotel for dinner. It’ll give you plenty of sightseeing time in Havana, just without the added dinner and nightlife. Choose a tour duration that best suits you.
What should I bring with me on my Havana day trip from Varadero?
As you’ll be out for the full day, it’s a good idea to bring along a small backpack with the following items:
- Plenty of water
- Lots of currency – euros, dollars or pounds, plus some Cuban pesos
- A hat and sun screen – Sightseeing in Cuba can be very hot!
- A change of clothes if staying until the evening
- A form of ID

There’s a lot to see and do in Havana, so be sure to do your research beforehand to determine your interests and itinerary.
Our top tips for visiting Havana from Varadero
- Research the history of Havana and some of its sites before visiting. Whilst a tour guide can give you an overview of each place, having an understanding beforehand makes sightseeing so much more thrilling!
- If visiting Havana on a private tour, you can often customise the itinerary with a few attraction recommendations of your own. Let your guide know if there’s a particular place you’d like to see.
- Research restaurant options for lunch and dinner before arriving in Havana. Food can be hit or miss and reviews vary wildly. Note a few dining options down on your notepad or Google Maps app.
- Try to stop by at least one live music venue. Classic hotels, dance clubs and casual cocktail bars all have live music. Havana is famous for it!
- Take time out for rest breaks, refreshments and relaxation during your day. A full day of sightseeing in Havana can be exhausting work, so a quick break can recharge your batteries for the rest of the day.
- Avoid booking a convertible taxi or tour car for your trip from Varadero to Havana. It’s fun for the first 10-minutes, then it becomes extremely hot and uncomfortable. Make sure the car you book has air-conditioning.
- Havana is full of amazing, historic sights, but that’s not all that’s worth seeing. Take time to venture away from the tourist trail to see the ‘real Havana’ and how many Cubans live. The empty stores and decaying buildings will open your eyes to a different side of the city.
Thanks for reading our Varadero to Havana day trip guide. We hope we inspired you to visit the cultural Cuban capital whilst in Varadero. It’s a day-trip that shows you a completely different side of Cuba, away from the tourist beach centre. You’ll certainly have a day that you won’t forget!
