Big Six Tour Safaris - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Africa’s Big Five and big six

The africa’s big five or big six safari.

If you’re looking for a  safari in Africa  and have carried out research on it, you must have come across the term “ Africa’s Big Five and big six. ” The Big Five refers to the African: lion, buffalo, elephant, rhino and leopard. What excites most tourists is the fact that Africa is the only place where you can enjoy a  Big Five safari . Most reserves in Africa have all the big five animals. Let’s take a closer look at the creatures that attract hundreds of tourists to Africa every year.

Safari In Africa

African elephant.

The  African elephant  is the largest mammal in the world and is surprisingly adaptable. A ban on all ivory trade has helped stabilize the population of this magnificent creature to about 600,000 in the last decade. However, poaching is still a major issue – particularly in areas where there is political instability in Africa. Elephants are peaceful when left alone but if they feel threatened – then that’s another story!  Elephants are very social and affectionate animals. They move in a family of about 100 members. Who wouldn’t want to see such a magnificent creature and that too, a 100 of them altogether? It should be a sight you’ll cherish.

African Rhino

There are two kinds of rhinos in Africa: the Black rhino and the White rhino. The Black rhino has suffered the most declines with just 4000 remaining in the wild today. The White rhino is larger in number; 17000. Rhinos are actually neither white nor black; they are all grey. Black rhinos prefer to live in solitary and they reside in savannas, shrub and bushes. White rhinos tend to be more social and live in groups. South Africa is home to more than 80% of Africa’s rhino population.

African Leopard

Leopards usually use trees as observation platforms and for protection so you must remember to look up to see this beautiful cat while on safari. Leopards are shy and nocturnal. They are smaller than lions in size. The are extremely agile jumpers and can run at the speed of 35 miles per hour. They live throughout the sub Saharan Africa.  This great creature is on The International Union of Conservation of Nature’s “near threatened” list.

African Lion

This is one  of the Africa’s Big Five and big six and one of the most exciting animals to see on safari. Lions are very social animals and they live in prides. They are excellent hunters but you’re more likely to see one sleeping rather than hunting. Lions can reach about 14 years of age. Most tourists are most excited to see this creature man has admired for its beauty and strength for years.

Cape Buffalo

These are usually found in protected wild life areas with plenty of water throughout sub Saharan Africa. Studies have shown four types of species of the buffalo in Africa. These are considered Africa’s most dangerous animals – even lions won’t attempt to attack these unless they have friends helping them!

Mountain Gorillas

However, here at sandfieldtravel  we like the Africa’s Big Five and big six and the sixth  being the mighty mountain Gorillas these are most seen on your mountain gorilla trekking and most done in Uganda.

At least, Many people have them on their bucket list of must-see and do activities but very few are able to do it and see them in their natural habitat. for this reason, I have always felt that mountain gorillas should be added on the list.

The countries where you have the most chances of seeing Africa’s Big Five and big six are:  Uganda ,  Kenya and Tanzania

The Big 6 on Safari!

leopard safari

Have you ever wondered where the phrase, “Big 5” comes from? Most clients will ask, when requesting a safari, “are we going to see the Big 5?”

big six safari

The term is attributed to the hunters of old, who used the term to describe what they determined were the most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa.

They are lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and Cape buffaloes. All formidable foes indeed when being hunted by man.

Fortunately nowadays, most countries in Africa have banned hunting in favor of photographic safaris.

Now what about the giraffe? If dangerous refers to size, the giraffe is the tallest land animal, as the elephant is the biggest land animal.

big six safari

Giraffes in the Masai Mara, Kenya during our “Women Travel with a Purpose” Safari.

So if the requirement was size, the giraffe would make the cut and we would have the Big 6!

The most dangerous aspect of a giraffe is its kick. Lions, when hunting giraffe, have to keep out of the way of the giraffe’s kick, not to sustain an ugly wound, or even death.

When not being hunted by man or beast, giraffes mind their own business, and add beauty to the landscape with their long necks and eyelashes.

Scientists can’t agree on how many different types of giraffes there are in Africa. Some say only one main species, with four sub species, while others say seven species in total.

big six safari

Thornicroft giraffe, Zambia

Whatever the number, those of us who grew up in Zambia, claim our very own species of giraffe, the Thornicroft’s giraffe. Take a look at our sample itinerary to Zambia where you are likely to spot the Thornicroft giraffe. It’s found in the Luangwa.

To the uneducated eye, different species of giraffe will all look the same. It’s only their coloring and markings that distinguish them from each other.

And that long neck is actually used as a weapon! Giraffes spar with each other with their necks. Which is quite extraordinary when you realize their necks have the same number of vertebra as us humans, seven!

And if you were a baby giraffe, you would have come into the world with an almighty thump, as giraffes give birth standing up.

And those long legs? Unlike other animals, giraffes move both legs on one side and then both legs on the other side.

While they look ungainly, the giraffe can get up a good head of speed, around 35 mph. As a human, you won’t quite be able to catch up with a giraffe; not even Usain Bolt!

Next time you’re on safari, you might want to add the giraffe to the so called Big 5, if for no other reason than their unique characteristics.

Tree Climbing Lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park

The African Big 6 Experience: Encounter the Ultimate Safari Thrills

by Frank | Aug 1, 2023 | 0 comments

The African Big 6 Experience: Encounter the Ultimate Safari Thrills.

Table of Contents

The continent of Africa is a famously known treasure trove teeming with untamed wilderness and awe-inspiring landscapes. Across its vast expanse and landscapes, lies a realm where the wild reigns with supremacy.

Africa is the best continent to encounter the well-known African Big 6 wild animals including the Lion, African Buffalos, Rhinoceros, Leopard, African Elephants as well as the Mountain Gorillas.

The term “ Big Six ” is attributed to the hunters of old whereby they used this term to describe what they determined were the most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. And all these animals are “formidable foes” (meaning opponents who are very powerful, capable, and difficult to defeat) indeed when being hunted by man.

The term big six also refers to the six iconic and majestic animal species that roam the savannas, forests, and wetlands of Africa.

These animal species hold a special place in the hearts and minds of wildlife enthusiasts, adventure seekers and adventure lovers who seek an unforgettable journey into the heart of Africa’s nature.

Countries where all the 5 of the big 6 can be found include Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Zimbabwe whereas all the big six can be found in Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda.

The African Big Six (6) Game Include:

The lion holds a special place due to its powerful presence, symbolism, and significance in the region. Scientifically, the lion is referred to as “ Panthera leo “, and it holds a place in the African Big six.

The lion is a large, carnivorous feline found in Africa. Lions are characterised by a short, tawny coat, a tufted tail, and in the male, a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders.

As large and charismatic apex predators , lions hold cultural significance and throughout Africa’s history, they have been featured in myths, folklore, and traditional ceremonies, while representing strength, courage, and royalty.

African Lions are native animals to various African regions, such as from the vast savannas of East Africa to the dense woodlands of Southern Africa.

Their prevalence and prominence in the vast landscape of Africa have made them a symbol of the continent’s untamed wilderness.

African lions are so unique with amazing tree-climbing skills which is rare in the lion population all over the world. Destinations to witness the tree-climbing lions in Africa include Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda and Lake Mayara in Tanzania.

African Lions have exceptional hunting skills that have earned them a reputation as the “ King of the Jungle .”

African elephants are magnificent as well as intelligent creatures inhabiting the diverse lush landscapes of Africa.

The African bush elephant (Loxodonta Africana) and African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) are the largest land animals in the whole world with males reaching heights of over 13 feet while weighing over 14,000 pounds.

These mammals exhibit remarkable social behaviours by forming complex family units led by a female elephant known as a “matriarch”.

African elephants are typically herbivores and they feed on lush vegetation, including grass, leaves, bark, and fruits. Unfortunately, African elephants face severe threats from poaching and habitat loss.

Ivory poaching is the demand for elephant tusks and has led to a decline in their populations.

However, conservation efforts, which include anti-poaching initiatives and protected areas, have been outstanding in safeguarding these majestic creatures.

Scientifically known as “ Panthera pardus “, leopards are among the large, carnivorous feline. Their fur is typically tawny with dark rosette-shaped markings.

The leopards are normally nocturnal in that they are mostly active between sunset and sunrise, although they can hunt during the day.

Leopards are found in the savanna grasslands, and forested areas in Africa. Among the Big Six , they are the most difficult animals to acquire a hunting license for.

These apex predators are known for their powerful jaws that they use to suffocate prey and their skin texture that helps them blend in the lush savanna grasslands making them difficult to easily notice by prey and potential threats.

Leopards are good tree-climbing mammals which they use as a strategy to easily sight their prey and also run from potential threats and danger.

These apex predators also use their tree-climbing skills to hide their kills from scavengers like the hyenas.

African buffaloes, also known as Cape buffaloes, scientifically referred to as “ Syncerus caffer “, are iconic and robust bovine mammals found across sub-Saharan Africa.

African buffaloes are one of the largest and powerful animals, with mature bulls weighing up to 900 kg while around 1.7 meters tall.

They possess distinctive, irresistible backward-curving horns that can span up to 160 cm in width.

These creatures inhabit various environments including savannas, grasslands, woodlands and swamps. They are often found near a water source.

Buffaloes are naturally social animals and form herds of various sizes, from a few individuals to numerous hundreds. These herds are usually led by dominant bulls.

Female buffaloes also known as cows, normally give birth to a calf after a gestation period of about 11 months and calves are protected and cared for by the entire herd.

African buffaloes are famously known for their unpredictable and aggressive nature, most especially when threatened.

They have a reputation as responsible for most deaths of people in Africa and they have reportedly been known to ambush and attack humans.

And as one of the “ Big six ” game animals they are a challenging target for hunters. They face challenges from natural predators such as lions.

However, buffaloes are challenging prey to lions because of their unyielding persistence. African buffaloes are also listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN Red List because of their relatively stable populations in protected parks and reserves.

African Rhinoceros are magnificent as well as endangered creatures native to the African continent. There are two species of African rhinoceros including the black rhino (Diceros bicornis) and the white rhino (Ceratotherium simum).

The black Rhinoceros and white Rhinoceros are large herbivores mammals with two upright horns on their nasal bridge.

All these Rhinoceros species are classified as critically endangered because they face severe threats from poaching and habitat loss, leading to a critical decline in their populations and both are subject to extensive poaching and among the big-five game hunters, the black rhinoceros is more targeted and highly prized.

The white rhino is the larger of the two species, weighing up to 2,300 kilograms with a height of over 6 feet tall. Black Rhinos are smaller, with males weighing around 1,300 kilograms.

Both species have two distinctive horns made of keratin, and this is the same protein as human hair and nails. African rhinos are limited to habitats in a few countries in southern regions and eastern regions of Africa.

The demand for rhino horns as traditional medicine and also illegal wildlife trade have driven poaching rates to extreme levels.

Rhinos are normally solitary mammals, with a poor eyesight but excellent senses of smell and hearing. African rhinos are generally herbivores feeding on grasses, leaves, and fruits.

While in the wild, rhinos can live up to 50 years, while some individuals in captivity have lived for over 60 years. Rhinos are significant cultural symbols in Africa, representing strength, resilience, and natural heritage.

Mountain Gorillas

African Mountain Gorillas and scientifically known as “Gorilla beringei beringei” are critically endangered species of primates native to the dense forests and volcanic mountains of East Africa.

Mountain Gorillas are found in two isolated regions which include the Virunga Mountains spanning across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The estimated total population of Mountain Gorillas is over 1,000 individuals are left in the whole world, making them one of the most critically endangered species on the planet.

Gorillas live in cohesive and close-knit groups referred to as troops or families whereby each troop is led by a dominant male, called a silverback which is named after its silver-grey hair that develops on back as they mature.

Mountain Gorillas are herbivorous, and their diet consists of leaves, stems, fruits, and shoots.

They are well known for their peaceful and gentle nature, whereby they rarely show aggression unless threatened or provoked.

Gorillas communicate through various vocalizations, such as body gestures, and facial expressions.

Gorilla trekking in Africa is a carefully managed tourism activity that offers a unique opportunity for small groups of trekkers to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat while fostering and exhibiting greater awareness and support for their conservation.

Inconclusion, Africa is the one and only continent that harbours the famously known big six game animals in her lush breathtaking landscapes.

BIG SIX TOUR SAFARIS (Johannesburg) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

Escorted and Guided Safaris to the  Kruger National Park

                                      kruger national park overview.

The King of South African game Parks is the Kruger National Park and one of the best game-viewing areas in all of Africa.

The figures speak for themselves: 501 Bird species, 110 reptiles, 51 fish, 31 amphibians, 142 mammal and over 23,100 plant species have been recorded here. The region itself is enormous, extending from the Crocodile river in the South to the Limpopo in the North, from the wooded foothills of the eastern escarpment to the humid plains of the Low veld.

It certainly fulfills most visitors' fantasies of seeing magnificent herds of game roaming across acacia-studded stretches of savannah and, of course, is home to the Big Five.

The park is 120 km wide and over 450 km long, conserving 21,497 sq. km, an area the size of Wales or Israel. Despite its size, it is very well developed, with a good network covering 2600 km of roads and numerous camps, making a Kruger safari relatively hassle free.

They de-nude-ed the landscape.

Another day, another instance of tourists disrespecting a landmark.

This time, foreign sightseers angered Namibian authorities after posing naked atop the legendary Big Daddy Dune in the Namib Desert, as seen in photos circulating on social media .

“It is very sickening and it really [creates] a bad image for Namibia,” Kenneth Nependa, vice-chairperson of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations, told the Namibian Sun, the BBC reported.

He added that these antics risked attracting tourists who think that “anything goes” in the southern African nation.

Accompanying footage and video, snapped by an unknown source, shows the unnamed trio strutting about in their birthday suits atop the over 1,000-foot-tall sand mound, which is reportedly popular with families.

Visitors didn’t appreciate the tourists treating the scenic site like a nude beach and called on tourism officials to take action against the crass culprits.

Authorities haven’t yet publicly identified the sandy stripteasers, who allegedly left Namibia by the time authorities received the reports.

However, the nudists could be banned from entering the country’s parks, according to tourism ministers, who added that the “extremely shocking” act was public indecency and therefore punishable by local law.

In light of the indecent incident, officials are calling on visitors to report violators to authorities so they can deal with them accordingly.

“We appeal to that section of tourists to summon the conscience so that they do the right things,” declared Romeo Muyunda, a spokesperson for the ministry of environment, forestry and tourism.

However, many social media users disagreed that the incident was problematic.

“Why are they in trouble? They bothered no one,” an X user declared, according to the BBC, while another claimed that there is “nothing wrong with sunbathing.”

Big Daddy is one of the three largest dunes in Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft National Park and is a popular destination among sightseers looking to get a picturesque view from its crest.

A-list guests have been traveling from NYC to Egypt, Page Six has noticed on social media, for the wedding of Bilt Rewards founder Ankur Jain and Erika Hammond, the creator of Knockout at Equinox.

“Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary, Fox 5 anchor Bianca Peters, Equinox executive chairman Harvey Spevak, developer Mitch Moinian and “The Points Guy” Brian Kelly are among the guests, we hear, who were on a safari this week with the couple leading up to the big day in Cairo, Egypt.

An attendee told Page Six “It’s been a truly phenomenal affair. This is going to be the wedding of the year . . . We can’t wait to get to Cairo and see what else Ankur and Erika have planned.”

A source also told us, “The wedding is at a secret location in Cairo — and a few guests went on safari with Ankur and Erika before the big day later this week.”

Kevin O'Leary

Peters posted safari pics with the caption, “The most incredible pre wedding festivities ever,” while O’Leary posted images of himself in shorts and a blazer look — alongside his wife, Linda O’Leary — with the caption, “I’m sure we will win the mood board award tonight.”

Points Guy Kelly posted pics of lions, snakes and other animals, while Jain posted a video of the mogul and his group getting off a private plane and heading on their safari adventure together with the caption, “six days until our wedding.”

Also this week, Forbes put the Bilt tycoon, 34, on its cover and wrote, “With support from American Express’ longtime CEO Ken Chenault, the founder of fintech Bilt Rewards has become a billionaire creating a membership rewards program for house and apartment renters across the country.”
