All transfers were smoothly coordinated and all bookings made for us. We were pleased to discover that we would be conducted personally, and were not in a group with others. Our tour guide Kiran Rai was incredibly knowledgeable and accommodating. We cannot praise enough our driver Suren who drove faultlessly over some quite challenging roads. The hotel accommodations were exceptional. One small problem was the Peerless Hotel in Kolkata for our last night. We were assigned to an annex, which was adequate, but we had faulty TV service and poor WiFi. Only one restaurant was open, and it didn't start service until 7:30. After the wonderful service from the Elgin chain we were disappointed that the Peerless could not match this standard. Read more Written February 10, 2020

It was just as brilliantly organised as our first trip to India (which was a family of 10 on a Rajasthan road trip!). Airports, hotels, taxi services, train station drop off, hotel bookings. All went brilliantly and easily. We spent a week in Kolkata, and a week in Varanasi. Apollo's agents met us at the airport, took us to our hotel, took us on one day trip from each venue, and were always 100% punctual, helpful, reliable, friendly, and courteous. We like to discover cities by ourselves so we have them help us with the infrastructure and broad planning, rather than daily planning, and they are brilliant!! • Stephen D 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Hoppa airport Transfers - Beware!!! I was a member of a party of four, wishing to transfer from the airport to Candolim. We each had a large suitcase as well as hand luggage. With that in mind ( through Travel Republic) I booked a minibus for five people and paid extra for the privilege. What Hoppa provided was a saloon car which was totally inadequate. As a result we took the TUI bus and finished up being the last hotel on the journey, which is what we wanted to avoid in the first place. Through Travel Republic, I asked for a refund for the inward journey. Hoppa's reply (via Travel Republic) was that in the small print if they cannot provide the requested vehicle but provide something similar which will do the job, then a refund is not appropriate. I contacted TR again pointing out that the vehicle provided was not only inadequate but had we been squeezed in there would have been serious health and safety issues with the vehicle being overweight. Hoppa's reply was exactly the same and the refund was refused. I chose Hoppa because it was on the list provided by Travel Republic. I can't help thinking that perhaps Travel Republic could have done more to persuade Hoppa to change their mind. In future, I shall avoid Travel Republic and on my return to Goa next year, I will choose any transfer provider other than Hoppa. . As a rider, it was only when the incident occurred that one of my companions mentioned that she had experienced problems with Hoppa before, albeit in Sri Lanka. A a result of the failure in the inward journey, I cancelled the return journey via Travel Republic. I received an automated response saying my amendment had been accepted. Whilst we were waiting for the TUI bus, a minibus arrived supplied by Hoppa. Given that I already knew the refund had been refused, and that my cancellation had not been effected, It would have still cost me, had I refused to use it. We therefore took the minibus. The journey was satisfactory and no more. After all it was a simple transfer. For me both Travel Republic and Hoppa need to sort themselves out. Read more Written February 22, 2019

About Pichola Lake

One of the most beautiful and picturesque lakes in Rajasthan, India, is Pichola Lake . situated in the heart of the city, is the oldest and one of Udaipur’s largest lakes. During the ruling time of Maharana Lakha, Pichhu Banjara constructed the beautiful lake in 1362. No one has been isolated by the beauty of this lake to draw them. With its scenic surroundings, the lake looks more enchanting. The beauty of this pristine lake with the perfect backdrop of lush green hills must certainly have captivated Maharana Udai Singh, as he enlarged this lake when he founded the city of Udaipur . He also built a stone-built dam that comes under the ‘ Badipol ’ region on the shore of this lake.

On all its sides, Pichola Lake is enveloped by lofty palaces, temples, bathing ghats and elevated hills. There is a hill known as Machhala Magra in the southern part of this lake, and one can see a glimpse of Eklinggarh Fort from here. Udaipur’s City Palace stretches along the eastern banks of this lake. Mohan Mandir was designed by Jagat Singh and is located in the north-east corner of Lake Pichola.

Lake Pichola has two primary islands, the Jag Niwas and the Jag Mandir , situated on it. The lake is also renowned for its many small islands, temples and ghats for bathing. BEST Tips for Visiting Udaipur’s City Palace & Doing a Boat Trip Around Lake Pichola in 2024!

Categories Asia , India

Visiting Udaipur’s very large and grand City Palace is the most popular place to visit in Udaipur and it should be high on your list of things to do in Udaipur .

The City Palace was built over 400 years starting in 1553 ! The complex is considered the largest in Rajasthan and these days is open to visitors to Udaipur .

Not only is it decorated to the highest standard possible , it holds a museum so you can learn more about the Palace and the culture, and because of it’s location on top of a hill, it overs incredible panoramic views of this White City of Rajasthan .

Before you visit Udaipur’s City Palace , here are some tips and pieces of information to note that I wish I had known before I visited.

Find What You're Looking For Easily Here!

Tips for Visiting City Palace in Udaipur

SIM CARD FOR INDIA

I really recommend having a sim card in India as it makes travel in India so much easier! You may have heard that it’s hard to get a sim card in India but you can get a sim card in Delhi Airport, read this post to see how to buy a sim card in Delhi Airport or if you fly in elsewhere 3 ways to buy a sim card in India and you’ll be connected in just a few hours!

WHAT TO WEAR IN INDIA

If you are a woman, here’s what I recommend you pack and wear in India . Technically you can wear what you like in India in most places but to get fewer stares and feel more comfortable, read my post!

DON’T GET SCAMMED IN DELHI

Most people arrive for the first time into Delhi and get scammed within a few hours! Read my Delhi Travel Tips to help you enjoy Delhi, and the best places to stay in Delhi which is so important!

Udaipur City Palace Timings: 9:30am-5:30pm Everyday.

Udaipur City Palace Entry Fee: 300Rs to Enter the Palace and Museum for. Plus 200Rs for an Audio Guide for an Adult. This is the price shown for Foreign Tourists and Indian Tourists.

Udaipur City Palace Parking: There is a City Palace car park around the back of the Palace by the River.

To SEE the City Palace, have a look at my YouTube video here .

Get there early to avoid the crowds

The City Palace of Udaipur opens at 9:30am and like anywhere, the best time to visit Udaipur’s City Palace is in the morning , so get there early to help avoid the crowds. There seems to be group tours visiting the palace all day but if you get there when it opens you’ll have just enough time to avoid the big crowds and big groups who make Udaipur’s City Palace their first stop.

boat cruise in udaipur

Looking for a tour in Udaipur?? Have a look at one of these:

Purchase the audio guide

For 200Rs , you can purchase an Audio Guide rather than getting a guide to show you round. I found the audio guide to be really good and informing , plus if you are travelling solo or in a small group it will be cheaper .

The other benefit of having an audio guide is you have more freedom and can walk at your own pace. From what I saw the guides seem to tell visitors everything, which is part of their job and what they’re being paid for but I can’t imagine all of the Palace will interest you, parts of it interested me more than others, and it’s a big place!

Take ID or have a Bank Card to hire an audio guide

When you purchase an audio guide ticket at the main entrance you’ll be told you need ID to show when you pick it up. I didn’t have any on me and had to go back to my hotel but as it turns out, when I picked the headset up there is a sign that says they accept ID (drivers license or passport) or a bank card as a guarantee that you’ll take the headset back. That or 2000Rs.

As well as visiting Udaipur’s many Palaces and Temples, Udaipur offers lots of classes and activities like cooking classes, yoga classes, art classes and it’s possible to hire a moped or go on a bike tour, for more information on unique things to do in Udaipur see:  10 Unique Activities, Classes and Things To Do in Udaipur, India!

Don’t try and follow the audio guide numbers exactly

There are 30 points on the audio guide for Udaipur’s City Palace and some may be irrelevant to what you are interested in and some are hard to find. I’d recommend following the route as best as possible and you’ll still find and visit the majority of the palace, that’s what I did anyway.

Give yourself 1-3 hours to see the City Palace of Udaipur

I saw recommendations online advising to give a few hours to the palace . If you enjoy history you may need 3 hours or so, if you’re in a group going around quite fast you may need around 2 hours. On my own I went round it in 1 hour 15 minutes. I didn’t listen to all the audio guide points but I saw most of the palace and enjoyed what I saw. There’s a lot to do in Udaipur and though the Palace is Udaipur’s top tourist attraction , don’t spend all of your day there.

Get your City Views of Udaipur here

If you’re looking for City views of the White City of Udaipur , wait until you visit the palace as you see plenty of views from here!

Udaipur Lake Pichola Boat Cruise Tips

Another popular thing to do in Udaipur is a boat trip on Lake Pichola . In all honestly I found the trip to be a bit underwhelming as it was very short (1 hour but it felt a lot less), although it was nice to see the City from the Water so here are some tips if you do go.

Go straight after visiting the City Palace

If you do want to go on a boat tour around Lake Pichola , go straight after the Palace as the ticket booth is next to the main entrance of the City Palace and it’ll save you going all the way back into the palace complex later in your stay.

Give yourself time to walk to the jetty

It takes about 10 minutes to walk from the Palace to the boat jetty so give yourself time to get to the boat.

Lake Pichola Boat Trip Timings

The boats run every hour on the hour from 10:00am-5:00pm but you cannot reserve a certain time so get your ticket and walk down to the jetty with enough time to make sure you can fit onto the time slot that you want.

Lake Pichola Boat Trip Cost

From 10:00-14:00 the price of a boat trip around Lake Pichola is 450Rs but this increases from 15:00 because of the sunset viewing. The cost of a boat trip around Lake Pichola for sunset is 800Rs which is quite a big increase, especially as the sun isn’t even setting at 15:00 or 16:00 .

Be prepared to get off the Boat

Don’t think that you stay on the boat for the whole boat trip like I thought. The boat sails from the Palace, down the river slightly, turns back on itself and then heads to Jagmandir Island where you spend 30 minutes . To be honest there isn’t much there. There is a bar but the prices are quite high as it’s a fairly fancy place. Although the views are good and.

The drop off point on Jagmandir Island is not the same place as the pick up point

This is important and something the boat driver didn’t say when he dropped us off. The drop off point on the island of Jagmandir is different to the pick up point. Go through the gardens to the exit sign to be picked up!

You don’t have to get back on the same boat

I don’t believe you have to get back on the same boat.. I didn’t and they don’t wait for you either. Just head there after being on the island for 15-20 minutes and see if there’s a boat waiting, if not, wait for one.

A visit to Udaipur is incomplete without a boat cruise in Lake Pichola - the historic 14th century lake made by a local banjara (gypsy) that was extended in the 16th century by Rana Udai Singh II to establish Udaipur, the

For the eco-sensitive: Solar-powered boats were first introduced on Lake Pichola. In 1992, an initiative was taken by Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar of Udaipur, Chairman and Managing Trustee of the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation, the vision of Udaipur as a solar city. He initiated research that led to the development of solar power as a source of energy for transportation systems in Udaipur. A small diesel engine boat with the capacity to carry up to five passengers was converted to operate off batteries powered by solar panels fixed onto the roof. It now operates on Gajner Lake, besides Gajner Palace , a Grand Heritage Palace of the HRH Group of Hotels in Gajner, Bikaner. The success of this water taxi led to the building of RA II an eight-seater passenger boat that was successfully completed in 1995 and is used for ferrying visitors on Lake Pichola, Udaipur.

For the history lover: The picturesque boat ride on Lake Pichola not only provides the best scenic view of the lake and the mountains in the city, but also presents some of the most important historical monuments dotted along the lakeside or submerged within the lake. Beginning with the monumental lakeside facade of the City Palace, the boat ride moves to the picturesque ghats with their distinctive steps, still used by the locals. The lake-side is lined with the havelis of the nobles, most prominent being the Bagore ki Haveli. The Gangaur Ghat with the triple-arched Tripolia stands as a magnificent piece of architecture at the end of Bagore ki Haveli.

One can also relish the beauty of the small island structures in the midst of Lake Pichola i.e. the Mohan Mandir and the Arsi Vilas. Mohan Mandir was built by Rana Jagat Singh II as a dedication to Lord Krishna. It is a delightful perching place for the water birds little cormorants. Arsi Vilas is an island structure that has three rooms and an open courtyard at the rear. It was built by Rana Ari Singh II in the late 18th century.

The most resplendent sights on the boat ride are the island palaces. The 17th century Jagmandir Island Palace is one of the oldest and most grandiose palace that is legendary as place of refuge to Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shahjahan). Know more about Jagmandir Island Palace by visiting Jagriti -an exhibition about the historical and architectural development of Jagmandir Island Palace. The exhibition is located within the Gol Mahal at Jagmandir Island Palace and uses archival photographs and paintings to show the evolution of Jagmandir Island Palace as an incomparable pleasure-palace.

The other island palace of Jag Niwas, now the Lake Palace Hotel is an 18th century creation of Rana Jagat Singh II. It is said that he constructed the palace in response to his father's statement that 'if he wanted to stay in an island palace like Jagmandir

Beyond the lakeside history and the beautiful island palaces, the boat ride provides a fantastic view of the distant monsoon palace perched on the hills. Sajjangarh was the palace built by Maharana Sajjan Singh in the late 19th century to enjoy the beautiful monsoon season of the lake city of Udaipur.

True to its title, the City of Lakes - Udaipur is surrounded by a number of lakes mesmerising its visitors with its blue waters and scenic views. One such artificial lake that sits right in the middle of Udaipur city is Lake Pichola, built in the year of 1362 AD.

Named after the nearby village Picholi, Lake Pichola is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Udaipur. Flanked by islands, palaces, temples, mansions, ghats and restaurants, Lake Pichola offers something for everyone. The enchanting views of sunrise and sunset from the lake is something that should not be missed by anyone visiting the lake.

With dimensions of 3 miles in length, 2 miles in width and a depth of 30 feet, Lake Pichola has four main islands namely Jag Niwas, Jag Mandir, Mohan Mandir and Arsi Vilas.

Jag Niwas is home to Lake Palace which is now converted into a heritage hotel while Jag Mandir is home to the famous Lake Garden Palace. Mohan Mandir served as the place from where the king used to witness the Gangaur festival celebration held anually.

Once an ammunition depot, Arsi Vilas has a small beautiful palace which was built by one of the Maharanas of Udaipur to relax while enjoying the sunset on the lake. A sanctuary consisting of a number of birds such as tufted ducks, cormorants, coots, egrets, terns, kingfishers etc. is also built here.

History of Lake Pichola

Mesmerising the visitors with its charm and enchanting beauty, Lake Pichola is an artificial lake built in the year of 1362 AD and one of the popular sightseeing places to visit in Udaipur . It was built by a Banjara tribesman, Pichhu Banjara who used to transport grain during the reign of Maharana Lakha.

The captivating lake attracted Maharana Udai Singh so much that he established the city of Udaipur on the banks of this very lake. Maharana Udai Singh is credited with enlarging the lake further by building a dam on the shore of the lake.

Later, several islands, palaces, temples, mansions, and bathing ghats were developed in the surroundings of the lake over a period of time, making it even more attractive.

One of the most famous attractions in the lake surroundings is Lake Palace that sits right in the middle of the lake, constructed on the Jag island. Mohan Mandir, built by Jagat Singh between the period 1628-1652 and Jag Mandir are other islands that are worth a visit.

City Palace is another famous tourist attraction in the lake surroundings from where boats ply to other parts of the lake from Bansi Ghat. Arsi Vilas which is a bird sanctuary and Sitamata Game Sanctuary on the western part of the lake are other attractions around the lake.

Ornamental arch bridges at various locations further beautify the lake. These bridges are built at places where the lake narrows so that the water can reach the banks.

Attractions of lake pichola, 1. lake palace.

Built in 1740s by Maharana Jagat Singh, Lake Palace is one of the most famous attractions of Lake Pichola. Also known as Pichola Palace or Jag Nivas, this palace sits magnificently on the Jag island.

Now a heritage hotel of Taj Group, Lake Palace has over 80 rooms and served as a summer retreat for the Maharanas of Udaipur city. Spanning over 4 acres, the palace covers the entire of the Jag island looking as if it is floating on the waters.

The interiors of the Lake palace are as impressive as the exteriors. With stained glass motifs, fountains and parks, the palace is sure to mesmerise everyone with its architectural beauty.

2. Jag Mandir

Another impressive structure that tourists flock in huge numbers is Jag Mandir that occupies the island with the same name. Jag Mandir also served as a summer retreat and a palace for entertaining the guests of Udaipur city.

The construction of Jag Mandir was started in 1500s by Maharana Amar Singh and was succeeded by his son Maharana Karan Singh. It was finally completed by Maharana Jagat Singh and hence named after him as Jagat Mandir.

In the year 1623, the Mughal emperor Prince Khurram better known as Shah Jahan took refuge of Mewar King Maharana Karan Singh II when he rebelled against Jahangir. Maharana Karan Singh housed him in Gul Mahal of the partially completed Jag Mandir. The palace inspired Shah Jahan to construct the marvellous wonder Taj Mahal.

As one sets foot on the island, elephants carved beautifully in marble white greet them at the entrance. Gul Mahal on this island is a must visit, especially the zenana or women quarters of the mahal.

12 stone palace or Barah patharon ka mahal is another impressive structure worth visiting deriving its name from the 12 stones used to make it. There is also a museum depicting the history of the island.

3. Mohan Mandir

Comparatively a smaller island, Mohan Mandir was built by Maharana Jagat Singh between 1628 and 1652. Located on the north east corner of Lake Pichola, Mohan Mandir served as the place from where the King used to witness the festival of Gangaur.

4. Arsi Vilas

The fourth island of Lake Pichola, Arsi Vilas once served as an armoury. Built by one of the Maharanas of Udaipur to enjoy the sunset on the lake, it is now a sanctuary housing a variety of birds.

5. City Palace

Located on the eastern banks of the Lake Pichola, City palace is a historic structure that was built by 22 generations of Sisodia Rajputs over a long period of time starting from the year of 1559. The subsequent generations including Udai Singh II added impressive structures to the palace complex.

The proximity to the lake, adds further grandeur to the City Palace. During night time the view of the lake from the palace is quite enchanting, as the reflection of lights falling on the lake make it even more enthralling.

6. Mansions / Havelis

A number of mansions were built along the banks of Lake Pichola, with some of them being converted into hotels. One such Haveli that is quite famous is the Bagore ki Haveli which houses a museum. It also holds cultural shows during evenings.

7. Swaroop Sagar Bridge

Connecting Lake Pichola to a smaller lake called Swaroop Sagar, Swaroop Sagar bridge is a beautiful ornamental bridge built by the namesake king of Udaipur. It is located quite close to Bagore ki Haveli, another top attraction of Lake Pichola.

8. Gangaur Ghat

Also known as Gangori Ghat, Gangaur Ghat is the main ghat situated near the waterfront of Lake Pichola. Located near the Jagdish Chowk area, the ghat is quite popular with tourists and locals thronging it in huge numbers especially during festivals such as Gangaur Festival and Jal Jhulni Festival.

9. Chabutaras

Raised platforms can also be seen along the banks of Lake Pichola used for various purposes mostly within a courtyard. One such platform is Natini Chabutara that has an interesting legend associated with it.

Natini, a tightrope walker who used to live during the reign of Maharana Jawan Singh (1828–38) was asked by the drunkard king to cross the lake on a tightrope from a village on the west bank of the lake to the City Palace on the east bank. He promised to gift her half of the Mewar kingdom if she would successfully cross the lake.

It is believed that the king cut off the rope before she could reach the end of the rope and Natini fell into the lake. Cheated by the king, she cursed him that his family would not have any direct descendents or heirs from then on. This curse is believed to have come true as six Ranas out of the seven succeeding Jawan Singh were adopted.

Boating in Lake Pichola

A trip to Lake Pichola is incomplete without a boat ride in the serene lake, especially during sunset. Lake Pichola boating tickets are available at City Palace and are priced at Rs. 400 to 600 for Adults and Rs.200 for children. For sunset cruise, the tickets are priced at Rs.700 for Adults and Rs.400 for children.

With a seating capacity of six to eight, the boats are covered with a canopy. The boat ride starting from Rameshwar Ghat, first takes the visitors to Lake Palace. The boat then takes them to Jagmandir where the visitors can spend some time appreciating the scenic views.

The sunset view from the boat is truly magical, as is the changing colors of water from blue in the morning to golden in the noon and orange during sunset. During night, the reflection of palace lights on the water is another sight that is sure to leave one spellbound.

Boat crash kills one, injures another on Lake Cumberland

Russell Co., Ky. (WKYT) - One person is dead and another has been injured after a vessel collided with Cemetery Island on Lake Cumberland early Saturday morning, according to The Department of Fish & Wildlife.

The incident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. One victim was found injured, while the other was pronounced dead at the scene, after the body was discovered by a diver from Russell County Search & Rescue, who also responded.

“You’re just -- you’re running things through your mind, you know ‘what’s going on? Have we lost a life? Or do we have someone badly injured?’,” said Sergeant Wayne Wilson, who got the call early Saturday morning. “From that very moment until you get to the scene, you’re trying to gather information.”

The rescued individual received immediate medical attention for injuries sustained during the accident.

Sergeant Wilson said the lack of light out on the water contributed to the dangerous conditions faced by those involved, such as not being able to see floating objects including logs and trash.

“They were operating after dark and that enhances the dangers,” he said. “You can’t see those things floating in the water.”

According to Sergeant Wilson, it is important to maintain a safe speed which boating on the water, and to wear a life jacket to prevent drowning deaths.

This story is still developing and will update as more details become available.

Several daily ferries make the journey easy, allowing you to explore the island's diverse natural beauty on foot.

Climb to Bråvarden, the island’s highest point, for breathtaking views, or stroll along ‘Proposal Road’ to the Bridge of Love, where couples leave padlocks as tokens of affection. For a more relaxing day, unwind at the small beach or visit the Viking Age graves at Grønasvika.

Røvær is a small group of picturesque islands, home to just over 100 people.

Ferry tickets cost just 70 Norwegian kroner ($6.50) each way. Just be sure to double check the ferry timetable with Kolumbus to make sure you can get back to Haugesund in good time.

Downtown Haugesund

If you find yourself wandering through downtown Haugesund with time to spare, make sure to visit Viking Planet . Here, Haugesund’s Viking Age history is brought to life through immersive virtual reality, 3D presentations, and other digital experiences.

Of course, there’s more to Haugesund’s history than just its Viking roots. Karmsund Folkemuseum reveals the stories of the city’s involvement with shipping, fishing, and agriculture, in the 1,000 years since the Viking Age.

Elsewhere in the city, Our Savior’s Church is a striking red-brick, new Gothic church with a notable tower and room for more than 1,000 people inside. The church is usually free to enter on cruise days, although donations are appreciated.

Carnival Cruise ship rescues 27 Cuban migrants on rickety wooden boat bound for the US: report

A Carnival Cruise ship veered off course to rescue 27 Cuban migrants who were stranded on a rickety wooden boat in the waters between Florida and the island nation, according to a report.

Carnival Paradise had just set sail from Tampa when it spotted the desperate US-bound migrants about 20 miles off the coast of Cuba,

The ship set a course to intercept their decrepit craft with the high-seas rescue taking place around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Fox News reported.

The cruise ship was bound for Roatan, Honduras when it spotted the Cubans.

All 27 were taken aboard the ship, where they were fed and given medical checkups.

The Carnival crew notified the US Coast Guard and officials in Roatan.

In a statement, Carnival put the number of rescued migrants at 28 and said the ship was still scheduled to arrive in Honduras on Monday but did not provide additional details.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard intercepted a ramshackle home-made boat off the Key West shoreline — and shipped all 16 migrants on board back to Cuba, officials said.

The barely-sea-worthy craft — the bow of a small wooden boat with the rest made of foam — was spotted by an eagle-eyed good Samaritan and picked up by the Coast Guard cutter Charles David Jr. on April 7,  according to a press release .

The migrants were taken aboard the cutter and shipped back to Cuba, the Coast Guard said.
