Our Guide to Cornish Breweries

  • Harbour Brewing Co
  • Firebrand Brewing Co
  • Verdant Brewing Co

Wash down your pasty with a pint of thirst-quenching Cornish ale. Here in Cornwall, we have a great selection of breweries, from the mighty St Austell to traditional little micro breweries.

Here’s the Cornish Escapes guide to finding a great local pint on your Cornwall holidays.

Harbour Brewing Co (Bodmin)

This Bodmin-based brewery sells its beer in distinctive cans, emblazoned with a distinctive “H” and in some glorious colours. Their recent partnership with St Austell Brewery means we’ll be seeing Harbour’s brews in more locations across the south west, which is definitely good news. Look out for their Daymer Pale Ale and Big Wednesday IPA.

brewery tours cornwall

Verdant Brewing Co (Penryn)

Independent Penryn-based Verdant Brewing Co is less than a decade old, but is a firmly established name on the Cornish drinks scene. Visit their dog-friendly taproom for pizza, beer and other brews. Their take-away can menu changes weekly. As you’d expect from Cornwall’s artiest town, the branding is also delicious.

brewery tours cornwall

St Ives Brewery (St Ives)

Cornish Escapes’ local brewery must surely take the award for “Best-looking Cans”. The contents are pretty fine, too: try Summer Hazy Pale or a tin of Meor. The main brewery is now in Hayle, but they’ve retained a micro brewery at the original St Ives site. You can book onto a tour of either (or both!) and their St Ives Brewhouse cafe has some of the best views in town.

brewery tours cornwall

Cornish Crown Brewery (Penzance)

The Crown is a welcoming little pub behind the main shopping street in Penzance. What’s unusual about this friendly little venue is that they brew their own beers. Cornish Crown Brewery is up on the moors above Penzance and produces real local favourites including IPAs and a porter. Best enjoyed at The Crown itself. The Star Inn in nearby Crowlas also brews its own beer .

brewery tours cornwall

Black Flag Brewery (Perranporth)

Black Flag Brewery and taproom is on the beautiful north coast just outside Perranporth. Try to visit the taproom on a Friday or Saturday evening, when you can enjoy their famous wood-fired pizza longside your Crab Claw steam beer. Conscious of any impact on the environment, they’ve switched to using organic malted barley.

Firebrand Brewing Co (Launceston)

Firebrand began life in an old milking parlour on the edge of Bodmin Moor. They’ve since moved to a sparkling new modern base in Launceston, which has a lively taproom overlooking the brewery. If you fancy a change from the beer-and-pizza combo, Firebrand’s taproom serves burgers: perfect with their signature brew, Patchwork Rocket pale ale.

brewery tours cornwall

Padstow Brewing Co (Padstow)

It’s now a quick trip over the estuary to Padstow and its superb local brewery. Padstow Brewing Company has tasting rooms at Broad Street and Duke Street, both of which offer tapas-style food to accompany their range of beers. You can also book onto a brewery tour. Try the super-refreshing Padstow Pale Ale.

brewery tours cornwall

Skinner’s Brewery (Truro)

There was a collective howl across the county in 2022 when this much-loved Cornish brewery went into administration. Happily, Skinners was taken over by another Cornish company, the Goodh Brewing Co at Indian Queens and continues to brew the iconic Betty Stogs. Visit Skinner’s Truro Taproom for beer and fried chicken.

brewery tours cornwall

Sharp’s Brewery (Rock)

Sharp’s in Rock is best known for its Doom Bar and Atlantic Pale Ales and was once challenged by Rick Stein to brew a special beer to accompany seafood (they named it Chalky’s Bite, after the chef’s famous dog). Sharp’s is a real fixture at local festivals such as Rock Oyster and The Wyldes Cornwall; and if you miss the party, you can book onto a tasting session at the brewery

St.Ives Brewery

Breweries and distilleries to visit in Cornwall

When visiting the Cornish coast and countryside, a brewery or distillery tour should definitely make the shortlist of things to do during your stay. Whether you’re an avid gin fan, an IPA expert or just keen to expand your knowledge on the fascinating processes involved in creating alcoholic beverages, there’s a tour for you in this region! Plus, a number of them are also family-friendly so even if you’re travelling with kids in tow you’ll still find somewhere to visit.

These are our top recommendations…

Skinner’s Brewery , Truro

Skinner's Brewery is one of our personal favourites, and all their bottles have been inspired by the stunning Cornish landscape and culture. Keep an eye out in the local pubs for their beers and ales on draft - the distinctively beautiful logo artworks will tempt you in - and once you’ve taken a sip, you’ll want to know all their secrets! So, why not head off on a brewery tour? We’ve recently teamed up with Skinner's to give away a case of their latest addition, Towans lager, a £500 holiday voucher and a tour of the brewery. Head over to Cornwall Life to enter.

*Competition closes October 31st 2019

Find a place to stay in one of our Truro cottages .

Colwith Farm

Colwith Farm Distillery , Lanlivery

A trip to Colwith Farm will enlighten you as to how premium spirits are created from start to finish and also give you the chance to sample a selection in a tasting session on the working farm. Special classes for gin fanatics are also available to book. Here you can learn all about the distilling process before making your very own 70cl bottle using hand-selected botanicals which suit your tastes to take home and enjoy. Colwith Farm also offers bespoke events from gin & cheese nights and music events to cocktail masterclasses and plenty of other special experiences too!

Stay nearby in one of our Lostwithiel cottages .

Healeys Cornish Cyder Farm , Truro

This one is for the cider fans! Wander through their production facilities, see the apples from the courtyard to the press and fermentations, take a trip to the underground cellar, explore the ‘cyder’ making museum and enjoy a full product sampling session: here you’ll learn all about the unique product and brand history. A Healeys tour is suitable for all the family too, with the kids’ favourite part usually being the tractor ride through the Orchard, and with sessions ranging from 20 minutes to 1 hour 45, you’ll be able to slot a visit into any time schedule.

Explore the local area from one of our Truro cottages .

St Austell Brewery , St Austell

Perhaps among the most well-known breweries in the area, St Austell offers a fascinating tour of the premises that they have occupied for more than 150 years. There are two tour options on offer, lasting from 90 minutes to 2 hours. Both include a sampling lesson in the Small Batch Brewery as well as a beer token for the finale. During your visit you’ll learn all about St Austell’s history, their brewing process as well as details on some of the classic favourites and newest, most exciting brews yet.

Base yourself nearby at one of our St Austell cottages .

Driftwood Spars Brewery , St Agnes

Offering a selection of brewing experiences, from short tours to ‘The Ultimate Beer Brewing Experience’ where you can get fully stuck in, Driftwood Spars is a great day out for grown-ups. You’ll either be based at the seaside brewery or the microbrewery and will have Pete the brewer on hand to capture your attention with his wealth of knowledge throughout the experience. Those who don’t wish to participate, can see all the action through the glass wall in the shop, watching and learning as the magic happens.

Browse our range of cottages near St Agnes .

Although not all of our favourite distilleries or breweries offer tours, you can still sample their goods at a number of local establishments. So, with that in mind we’d recommend keeping your eyes peeled for the following on your next holiday to Cornwall:

  • The Wrecking Coast Distillery , the producers of an INCREDIBLE clotted cream gin.
  • Moorland Distillery , who are the proud makers of a superb Apply Brandy and Schnapps that can be found at a number of local festivals and events around Cornwall offering up samples.
  • Curio , a brand that have created an impressive range of artisan gins, rums and vodkas inspired by fragrant local botanicals.
  • St Ives Liquor Co. , a family-run business that distil their very own range of fruity gins, limoncellos and even an extra special marmalade. They also run a fantastic gastro bar, SILCo. Searoom, serving up creative cocktails and delicious tapas food by the Cornish coast.
