Hand luggage restrictions at UK airports

There are restrictions on what items you can take in your hand luggage and hold luggage when boarding a plane in the UK.

There are different rules if you’re taking goods to sell or temporarily abroad for business reasons , for example sales samples, professional equipment or musical instruments for a performance.

Airport security staff will not let anything through that they consider dangerous - even if it’s normally allowed in hand luggage.

Hand luggage allowances

Check with your airline how many and what size bags you can take on the plane with you.

Check the rules for electronic items and devices you’re allowed to take on a flight before you travel - there are different rules depending on which country you are travelling to or from.

Taking liquids through security

There are restrictions on the amount of liquids you can take in your hand luggage. Check the rules for liquids before you travel.

If possible, pack liquids in your hold baggage (luggage that you check in).

The rules for taking liquids through security in your hand luggage have changed for some UK airports. Check with the airport before you travel.

Liquid restrictions outside the UK

Countries outside the UK might have different rules on carrying liquids as a transit or transfer passenger. You should check these rules with the relevant airlines and airports before travelling.

You can only carry 1 lighter on board. You should put it inside a resealable plastic bag (like the ones used for liquids), which you must keep on you throughout the flight. You cannot:

  • put it in your hold luggage
  • put it in your hand luggage after screening

Food and powders

Food items and powders in your hand luggage can obstruct images on x-ray machines. Your bags may need to be checked again manually by security. You can put these items in your hold luggage to minimise delays.

The best carry on luggage to buy in 2024

By Lauren Burvill and Charley Ward

best carry on luggage cabin case

It’s a rookie error that many of us have been guilty of – carry on luggage that’s too large, too heavy, or too uncomfortable to carry. I’m ashamed to admit that, despite having worked in travel for more than 10 years, I recently, and accidentally, overpacked my hand luggage on a flight from Australia to London. Much to the frustration of my fellow Qatar Airlines passengers, I had to do the embarrassing scramble of throwing what I could grab into our check-in suitcases. All that time spent organising was destroyed in a moment of panic.

If like me, you’ve been caught out at check-in, you’ll know that the wrong carry-on luggage can ruin a trip before it even begins. This is why thought and research are required when choosing the right cabin bag for your flight – even more so than for a check-in suitcase. To save you the admin, we’ve found the best luggage to stash in the plane’s overhead bins.

How we tested the best carry-on luggage

Image may contain Adult Person Baggage Clothing Footwear Shoe Accessories Bag Handbag Plant and Coat

Every case on this list has been has been independently tested and reviewed by our editors Charley Ward and Lauren Burvill . We run each piece of carry-on luggage through a test in office, and then pass the cases on to members of the wider team to take with them on a flight for further testing. When testing, we look for overall quality, spinner wheels, TSA-approved locks, design features such as exterior pockets, charging ports or laptop compartments, and value for money. We also assess the weight and size, overall function and visual appeal.

The best hard shell carry-on luggage

Pros: Durable, easy to manoeuvre, compression pad and straps, comes with a laundry bag, multiple colour options.

Cons: Colours sell out quickly, light colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, 0.1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair.

Size: 55.1x34.8x22.9cm

Weight: 3.2kg

Away's recognisable original carry-on case is one of the best on the market – beloved by many of our editors and numerous celebrities, including Margot Robbie and Meghan Markle. As one of the first luggage brands to rethink suitcases through a millennial lens, Away has been cleverly perfecting its cases to combine equal parts style and function. The real highlight of this carry-on case is the quality, particularly the wheels. Inside, both mesh compartments can be firmly secured – one with a zip, the other with a compression system with straps – so there is plenty of packing space and your case will remain neatly organised.

Editor review: “I travel with this Away carry-on case all the time, particularly back and forth from London to Lisbon where I've been living for the last year. No matter how much I pack in this case, it's always so smooth and easy to navigate through busy airports thanks to its spinner wheels and sturdy frame,” Abigail Malbon , acting audience growth manager.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Lightweight suitcase, great value price, large range of colour options, multiple compartments inside, luggage sets available.

If you're a frequent flyer looking for a zippy hard-shell suitcase, Antler's Clifton cabin bag is a winner. The durable yet lightweight polycarbonate case features a twist-grip telescopic handle, making it very easy to wheel it around the airport at speed. Not only is this case a great size and quality, but they also look smart too, with seven subdued shades to choose from.

Editor review: “I have this case in the mineral colour as part of the full travel set . This case is the one I use the most and it's just a dream to travel with. I really love the two zip-up pouches inside. If you don't travel with packing cubes, these can do a similar job and are ideal for storing delicates and toiletries,” Lauren Burvill , commerce editor.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Very light, impressively quiet, smooth action, scratch-resistant shell

Cons: Relatively small side, no laptop sleeve or additional pockets

Size: H54 x W36 x D19cm

Weight: 1.8kg

July asserts that this is the world’s lightest double-wheel suitcase, and while we can’t verify this claim, it’s certainly the lightest one we’ve ever used. As such, we’re crowning it our best lightweight luggage pick. This was much appreciated when manhandling it in and out of the overhead compartments, as was its whisper-quiet action, even while trundling over a notoriously bumpy pavement. This was something that truly impressed me. There are nine colours to choose from, and all July carry-ons and checked bags can be personalised.

Editor review: “I travelled with this recently on a weekend trip to Palma and managed to squeeze in four dresses, my washbag , straighteners and two pairs of shoes. Next time I’ll use some compression packing cubes to maximise capacity further. Overall it feels expensive, with a sturdy handle and strong polycarbonate shell that withstood several knocks on its first outing.” Charley Ward , commerce writer

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros:  Lightweight, 100-day trial policy, unlikely to scuff.

Cons:  Colours appear brighter in real life, expandable handle is a little sticky.

Size:  50X33X23cm

The Canadian brand famed worldwide for its sleek backpacks recently launched its heritage hardshell luggage collection, including both checked luggage and a carry-on style. The compact and lightweight suitcases are made from a 100% polycarbonate EcoSystem™ Hardshell, with 70% of each suitcase made from recycled road barricade material. Inside the carry-on, the case has one large mesh zip compartment with an additional smaller pocket and compression straps on the other. We love the simplicity of it all, but be warned: the colours appear much brighter in real life compared to online – the pastel yellow shade, in reality, is closer to a neon tennis ball.

Editor review: “This carry-on suitcase is on the smaller side, but it's perfect for me as I do a lot of short trips. It means I never have to worry about which airline I'm flying with and what dimensions they allow. I've taken this with me on multiple trips, and it's very durable, showing virtually no signs of wear and tear to date. I also personally love the cheerful bright colour,” Sarah James , deputy digital editor.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Classic look, garment bag hook.

Cons: Not the most lightweight carry-on, being the heaviest on our list.

Size: 55x38x20cm

Weight: 4.6kg

Leave it to Bric's to create the most beautiful and functional hand luggage on the market. The heritage brand has been crafting travel bags and leather goods out of the  Lake Como  region since the 1950s. Their cabin case is a smaller version of their Bellagio suitcase, with a shell made from lightweight Makrolon® polycarbonate along with vegetable-tanned leather trimmings that not only look smart but also help to prevent scuffing. Inside the lined case features organisation pockets, a padded laptop sleeve and a garment bag hook and space for three hangers. As with all Brics luggage, the Bellagio suitcase comes with a five-year warranty.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Organisational pockets, zip-up divider, leather luggage tag, stylish design and interior.

Cons: Lighter colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, doesn't fit within Air France, Ryanair and Emirates cabin bag allowance.

Size: 56X45X25cm

The leather handles with contrast stitching, the little round logo – the little details that made us notice The Portable Porter's carry-on case. Inside there's even more to discover, the biggest surprise being the bespoke monogrammed lining (in the yellow case, it's a cheery multicoloured geometric print) made from recycled plastic bottles. On one side of the case are three pockets, including a full zip divider, and two smaller pockets – one with a water-resistant laundry inside, the other storing a round leather luggage tag. A compression pad and straps are on the other side of the case.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Smooth, sturdy spinner wheels and a textured finish add to its overall durability

Cons: No charger, could use a few additional pockets

Weight: 3.7kg

Dimensions: 55 x 35 x 23cm

As with the Aviator Grand, Paravel's carry-on is beloved for more than just its retro Wes Anderson - style designs. It's made using eco-friendly materials, like recycled zippers and a lining crafted out of upcycled plastic water bottles, and comes in beautiful shades like Scout Tan and Safari Green. Inside, one half zips fully closed and has an additional zip pocket of its own, while the other is covered by a compression board. It's a favourite of US Traveller senior editor Megan Spurrell, who has brought it on trips to Mexico City, Lisbon, Los Angeles, and more.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Comfortable handle, fairly easy to clean

Cons: Although the beige colour is incredibly pretty, it gets dirty very quickly; I would recommend a darker colour

Weight: 3.8kg

Dimensions: 58 x 40 x 25cm

Béis is a favourite luggage brand for our team over in the US, who’ve tried a number of its softside cases and weekender bags, before getting their hands on its carry-on. Unsurprisingly, it was a hit. “I would recommend this for a traveller who is an exclusive team carry-on member,” US commerce producer Paris Wilson says. She managed to fit at least 14 outfits, plus four pairs of shoes and two purses, inside on a recent trip to the Florida Keys. It’s lightweight and easy to manoeuvre: – “I was able to bring it down from the overhead bin myself as well as move it in and out of the trunk of the rental car easily” – and easy on the eyes as well: “I got so many compliments on how pretty the carry-on was while in the airport and on holiday. The colour is beautiful, it’s an ideal size, and the ribbing on the exterior adds some really cool dimensions.”

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Smooth glide, TSA-approved combination lock, the expansion capabilities

Cons: Mistaken identity – given their popularity, get a unique colour or add your favourite sticker to the outer hard shell to help identify yours if you wind up checking it

Weight: 3.6kg

Dimensions: 56 x 36 x 23cm

We’ve tried several Away suitcases and the Flex is our pick for overpackers and times you need a little more space. It gives travellers an additional 2.25" of packing space when expanded, bringing the capacity up from just under 40L to 46.7L. Used by US Traveler journalist Lara Kramer for trips including a one-week trip to London, it earned points for rolling smoothly across almost any surface, thanks to its 360° spinner wheels.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Lightweight, durable, and easy to move around and lift

Cons: Only available in a few standard colours and there really isn’t anything that stands out about it to help you know it’s yours.

Weight: 2.9kg

Dimensions: 54 x 38 x 23cm

On the other end of the price spectrum, there is this hard side carry-on from Amazon. Thanks to its affordable price, roomy size, spinner wheels, and built-in TSA lock, it has racked up tons of positive reviews on Amazon. Our US associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny agrees with those reviews, calling it “an overpacker's dream suitcase.”

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Compression straps and pad, easy to close, really good-looking

Cons: Not quite capacious enough

Weight: 3.9kg

Dimensions: 56 x 35 x 23cm

This particular designer carry-on may ring a bell for Succession fans – Carl Friedrik pieces were featured more than once during the show's run. It's also US editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs' go-to, who has brought it to Mérida in the Yucatan, his parents’ house in Connecticut for Christmas and Easter, to the North Fork of Long Island, and to Chicago. Outside, “This case is gorgeous – beautiful contrasts between the grey of the polycarbonate shell and the delicious slivers of warm leather.” Inside, he says, “There are two very useful sets of compression straps and one (removable, also useful) compression pad which one might as I did mistake for a laptop case at first glance.” And perhaps the highest praise: “After nearly a year of use, it still looks brand new.”

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Stylish, removable hanging wash bag, luggage tag and jewellery pouch included, vibrant patterned inner

Cons: Only two wheels, relatively small

Size: 47 x 32 x 18cm

Weight: 3.5kg

With their vintage effect, striking leather straps and shiny gold locks, Steamline cases are head-turners. You'll certainly stand out among the boring black cabin bag cohort in the airport – and there are plenty of matching pieces to complete your set. This little carry-on case is lightweight and spacious enough to pack for two nights comfortably, with lots of little pockets to keep your jewellery and travel-sized toiletries easily in hand. We also appreciated the hanging washbag, which was a nice touch and one not seen in many cabin cases on this list. This suitcase handles fine with two wheels, but those used to a four-wheel spinner may balk a little to begin with at the lack of additional function.

The best carry-on luggage with external pockets

Pros: Four colour options, multiple internal pockets, outer pocket expands, great value price, one of the best lightweight suitcases we’ve tried.

Cons: 1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair.

Size: 56X35X23cm

Weight: 3.3kg

The zippy and lightweight Clifton cabin case is one of Antler's best sellers. The rolling polycarbonate suitcase has all that you could need for everyday travel – twist-grip handle, double lock, waterproof and mesh pockets inside – but what makes this stand out from other classic hard cases is the external pocket. The full zip pocket features multiple compartments as well as a padded slip pocket that can fit a tablet of 15.6-inch laptop, allowing easy-to-reach storage for all of your on-the-go items.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Won’t scuff or scratch, external zip-up pocket with padded laptop sleeve, internal compression pad, smart colour options.

Cons: Minimal internal pockets and zip-up compartments; can be difficult to align the closure and clasp it shut when the case is full.

Size: 55X38X25cm

Weight : 4.3kg

For a case that looks and feels like it means business, Carl Friedrik has you covered. Their carry-on case is all slick and shiny, from the studs lining the opening to the tan Italian leather handles and detailing. The snap-shut locks make this hard shell case stand out from the rest. Instead of fiddly zips, the case is secured with a unique aluminium lock frame – for extra security, you can use the combination lock feature. There is a zip on the external pocket, allowing for easy access and storage of your laptop and documents in the padded sleeve and additional compartments.

Editor review: “My favourite feature is the hard shell outer-casing which contains a convenient and safe pocket for a laptop. The lockable feature means all of your belongings are super safe. The only downside is that if you fill this case to the brim you'll struggle to shut it without fabric getting caught in the clasp,” Sophie Knight , visuals editor.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Lockable external zip-up pocket with multiple compartments, expandable zip system, compression. straps, large wheels, USB port charger.

Cons: No compression pad, prone to fingerprint marks, slightly cumbersome to reach the hidden USB port, power bank not included.

Size: 55X40X20cm

Makers of the Swiss Army Knife, Victorinox, have applied the same Swiss precision and innovative design to their luggage range. Their expandable global carry-on is one of their best sellers. It is full of secret compartments and features, from the lockable external pocket with four separate storage compartments to the USB port hidden behind a compartment that folds out to reveal a tiny ballpoint pen, luggage ID tag, and SIM card pin. While some cases sacrifice less main compartment room for the external pocket, this makes up for it with the expandable zip system, offering 20% additional space. Even though the weight is on par with the other cases on the list, this feels like a heavy-duty case thanks to the larger wheels, making it a suitable solution for navigating bumpy cobblestone streets.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Range of colours and finishes, zip-up mesh screens on both sides.

Cons: No compression pad, outer pocket does not expand.

Weight: 3.4kg

Engineered in Germany, Horizn Studios specialises in luggage with a lifetime warranty, made from all-vegan materials, and sent to you using neutral shipping. There's a lot to choose from – their Circle One range is made from a plant-based hard shell – but in terms of quality, price and function, our pick is the M5 cabin bag, a partly recycled hardshell case with a front laptop pocket, recycled polyester lining and enough space to last a five-day trip. The cabin bag comes with a luggage tag, and dust protector as standard, with the option to personalise the case or even upgrade to the smart version that comes with a removable charger and compression pad

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: External pockets, lightweight, great value price tag, next-day delivery with Prime.

Cons: Basic design, not the most durable suitcase on our list.

Size: 50x40x20cm

Weight: 2.1kg

When it comes to size, weight, price, design and quick delivery, Aerolite's cabin suitcase (available on  Amazon ) ticks all the boxes. The dimensions of the case fit within most airline allowances including British Airways and easyJet, while the weight of the case comes in at a very light 2.3kg. Of all the features, it's the two outer pockets that make this one a winner, plus it has a great value price.

Editor review: “I've travelled with this case a couple of times on short city breaks. For the price, it does a good job, and the external pockets are handy for easy access. If you load up the case too much, especially the top, when it's standing upright, the case can often topple over. But otherwise, it's a great budget option,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros:  External zip-up pocket, removable compression pad, laundry and shoe bags.

Cons: Scuffs but comes with a sponge for rectifying, front pocket zipper can be difficult to manage.

Size: 55x35x22cm

Weight : 3.5kg

Born out of Vancouver, Monos approached luggage with a less is more design philosophy, as seen in their sleek carry-on pro case. The hardshell style has three interior pockets and three zippered pouches, all accessed from the front pocket, making it incredibly easy to travel with your laptop and providing a safe place for documents, passports and chargers. I greatly appreciated this feature as it saved me the embarrassment of rummaging through my suitcase on the airport floor. The interior of the carry-on has a removable compression pad and a zippered pocket for flat items. My favourite features were the silver ion-coated laundry bag and the two shoe bags. I recently took the case on a weekend break and loved how the compartments let me separate my different clothing items and create an easy-to-manage laundry bag once I arrived home. Amber Port

Editor review: “I've taken this chic yet practical hardside suitcase with me to Crete, Paris and Chichester (we love a staycation!), and my favourite part has to be the front pocket. It gives me easy access to essential items like my passport, wallet and chargers while keeping them organised and, most importantly, safe,” Amber Port , Audience Growth Manager.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Lightweight, adjustable external straps, zip-up dividers, range of colours.

Cons: None that we can see.

Size: 51x32.5x23cm

Weight: 2.42kg

If you're just needing a suitcase to take on weekend breaks, look for durable and roomy styles with trolley wheels that can handle pesky cobblestone streets. This Eastpak cabin case has clever adjustable straps on the outside so you can ensure your luggage will fit within the allocated size allowance.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Front pocket, a rarity for hard-shell bags, plus more internal compartments; comes with a removable charger

Cons: Not expandable, so less forgiving for overpackers

Dimensions: 58 x 38 x 25cm

Arlo Skye isn’t an especially well-known suitcase brand in the UK, but it’s a favourite of some of our US team – especially senior editor Megan Spurrell, who has taken it on both weekend trips and week-long adventures. “This bag has never let me down,” she says, crediting its surprisingly roomy inner and sturdy shell: “This suitcase looks sleek, but is totally durable. I’ve checked it on a few occasions, and it always survives being chucked onto the baggage carousel with little to no evidence of the journey.”

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Lightweight, range of colours, front pocket, handles smoothly

Cons: Expensive, handle takes up quite a bit of internal space

Size: 55 x 39.5 x 23cm

This cabin case has been carefully designed to make light work of whizzing through security. The front pocket opens out completely flat, and three internal pockets are within for your liquids, passport, electricals and a 16” laptop sleeve. As befitting a brand focusing on outdoor pursuits, this is a tough case built to withstand bumps and knocks. A custom-built telescopic handle and ultra-quiet Japanese Hinomoto wheels add to the luxe factor – it’s a very quiet suitcase on the move, and we like the unusual green tone that makes it easy to spot on the carousel.

Editor review: “While The Ramverk Carry-on isn’t the most lightweight carry-on case I’ve travelled with, the consequential sturdiness quashes any hesitance – should it need to go in the hold, it would certainly put up a fight against rougher bag handlers. The telescopic trolley handle comes up to a perfect height, the 16-inch laptop pocket makes it ideal for business travel, and four wheels allow me to keep it alongside me the entire time. My favourite feature is the ability to open the compartment at the front without having both sides open on the floor.” Connor Sturges, digital assistant

The best underseat cabin bag

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros: Custom sizes to suit specific airline allowances, laptop sleeve, bottle pouch, multiple colour options.

Cons: Colour options are only in regards to details, suede details aren't ideal for wet weather.

Sizes: Ryanair Size: 40x20 x25cm, Wizz Air Size: 40x 30x20cm, easyJet Size: 40x36x20cm

Weight: under 0.8kg

Cabin Max truly understands the plight of bargain-hunting travellers, having created a line where each backpack meets the exact maximum carry-on size measurements for the specific airline that you’re flying. In addition, their bags feature multiple pockets (including one for a laptop and bottle), adjustable ‘packaway’ straps and air mesh padding. There’s a 3-year warranty too.

The only downside is that if you opt for a larger bag – say the easyJet size – it probably won’t fit in the baggage sizer for either Ryanair or Wizz Air. However, you could always opt for a Ryanair-sized bag to make sure you’re sorted for all options in the future. Chelsea Dickenson , founder of Cheap Holiday Expert

The best carry-on backpack

Pros: Comfortable, multiple storage pockets, laptop sleeve, great as carry on luggage or a day bag, water-resistant fabric.

Size: 53x36x19cm

Weight: 1.1kg

Australian brand Bellroy is a favourite for organised travellers – once you try their popular tech kit you’ll never want to travel without it. Their transit backpack offers up the same clever organisation tricks – compression straps to keep items in place, an external pocket that can hold a water bottle and even a lined pocket to safely store sunglasses. Many of the features are well suited to business travellers, from the laptop sleeve to the thin top compartment ideal for storing a business shirt that’s folded flat.

Editor review: “I recently travelled with Bellroy’s 28L Transit Backpack for a four-day-stay in Venice. By using the roll method I was able to fit two pairs of trousers (including jeans), a pair of slip-on shoes, two tops, a shirt, a dress, and pyjamas in the main compartment, and then my delicates in the zip-up pouch. For easy access, I popped my carry-on washbag in the external pocket. Overall, it was really easy to pack everything I needed while still feeling streamlined and comfortable to carry,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Stubble & Co's clever bag that allows you to ditch your suitcase entirely – it's sized perfectly to fit in the airline overhead locker while maximising on internal space. A clamshell pocket makes packing and unpacking faff-free, with no need to dig about at the bottom of the bag. There are plenty of pockets for tech and essentials, and a 16” laptop compartment for those travelling on business. You can also read our full review of this bag.

Editor review: “The Adventure Bag from British B Corp-certified bag specialists Stubble & Co has none of the drawbacks of previous bags I’ve used. It’s big enough for a long weekend, but not too big for daily use, and packed with features: the secret pocket, the padded laptop compartment, the clamshell design, and a special pocket for my frequently dirty trainers (big tick). Using it on a recent trip to Comporta, as well as on my regular overnighters in London, it never felt over-engineered or fussy, and I loved the top compartments for books and gadgets,” Toby Skinner, features director.

Pros: Separate waterproof shoe pocket, trolley sleeve, rain cover for use during wet weather hikes

Cons: A little heavier than average

Size: 55x38x24 cm

Weight: 1.7kg

cabin bags for air travel uk

This bag looks and feels like it means business. With a 45L capacity, it’s one of the largest travel backpacks we’ve tried, while still fitting within airline carry-on bag requirements. It can be worn as a backpack or a duffle thanks to the removable strap. There’s also a trolley sleeve for times it’s accompanying you and an additional suitcase. We’ve found that you can happily fit a week’s worth of clothes in this bag, and there are compression straps that help keep everything in place. The brand also has some matching packing cubes, sized specifically for this bag, that makes it easier to keep things tidy inside. Finally, a chest strap helps support you if you’re taking this bag on a hike.

Editor review: “I took this bag for a weekend away recently and was impressed by how much I could fit inside – it was considerably more than I could squeeze into my regular suitcase carry-on. For one-bag travel, it’s a really good bet – it’s going to be my new go-to for festival season and on long weekends away, where I need to account for multiple outfit changes in a day. One caveat: I did get caught in some heavy rain at one point and sadly the water seeped inside the bag. It makes me hesitant to pack it during winter travel – keep it for your summer holidays or invest in a waterproof rain cover, just in case,” Charley Ward, commerce writer.

Pros: Very large while still within most carrier’s carry-on size limits

Cons: Not completely watertight in heavy downpours after a certain period of time

Size: 28x18x43cm

Weight: 1kg

The best carry on tote bag

Pros: Two handle options, multiple organisational pockets, detachable drink bottle holder, laptop sleeve, luggage handle sleeve.

Cons: Main compartment has no zip.

Size: 41X30X16.5cm

It’s easy to see why this travel tote bag is a best seller and often sold out. Firstly the size – the large tote has room for 22 litres, plenty of space for packing a whole weekend’s worth of items. When testing it, I managed to comfortably fit four different packing cubes of clothes inside, as well as a wash bag. Then there’s the organisation options – a dedicated laptop sleeve, a drink bottle holder, a pocket for a phone and wallet, as well as a zip-up pocket ideal for storing a passport. There are two external pockets, one that’s hidden and secured with a magnet, as well as a sleeve to slip over a luggage handle, so it can easily sit safely on top of a suitcase. The bag is made from a light machine-washable cotton canvas and comes in natural, navy and black, as well as a small size option.

Editor's review: “I've travelled with this tote a couple of times, using it as my under-seat bag on easyJet flights. As a mum of a two-year-old it's perfect for storing all of the things you need easy access to – there's plenty of room and dedicated pockets for toys, snacks, a tablet, a water bottle. It's also large enough that it can fit a travel potty. When I'm travelling by myself, I can fit multiple outfits and a pair of shoes in very easily by using packing cubes. I have the natural colour and really love how stylish it looks too,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

There are several Beis totes we love in its roster – the Large Work Tote is another great carry-on option – but its East To West bag is our top pick. It’s made from recycled plastic, has a removable cross-body strap, and is one of the brand’s larger offerings. The top zips up so nothing will spill out, which is handy regardless of whether you’re stowing it under your seat or in the overhead compartment. It comes in four colours to match your Beis suitcase, and a trolley sleeve to attach it to your case in the airport.

Pros: Laptop sleeve, mobile phone pocket, key leash, water bottle holder

Cons: Doesn’t come in as many colours as some of the other Beis totes

The best carry-on luggage for kids

cabin bags for air travel uk

Pros:  Range of designs, doubles as a ride, easy to clean.

Cons:  Slightly awkward to carry or pull when in a rush.

Size:  46X20X31cm

For tiny flyers, Trunki’s ride-on-luggage is one of the most popular children’s suitcases on the market. Lightweight yet built to last, the case has a storage capacity of 18 litres, allowing plenty of space for toys and books. The real highlight is the saddle design, along with horn grips for stability and a tow strap, so children can ride the case and be pulled along – a great way to kill time in the airport.

Editor's review: “We travelled with this suitcase as my two-year-old son's carry-on bag when we flew to the Maldives . He absolutely loved being pulled around the airport while riding it, which helped speed up the journey from check-in to the gate. The shape of the bag means it won't fit all large hard cover books, so stick to small or soft cover books, and I recommend storing any toys in packing cubes inside, otherwise they can fall out everywhere when the case is opened,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.

What size should my carry-on suitcase be?

Tediously, every airline has different size restrictions for carry-on luggage. The good news is that they’re all similar, so unless you have an especially large carry-on, your suitcase should fit in the majority of airlines’ overhead lockers. On average, look for a cabin case around 55 x 35 x 25 cm for maximum peace of mind. We’ve outlined the size restrictions for key British airlines below.

Every airline also allows passengers to bring a smaller underseat bag . These are great for keeping documents to hand, along with your water bottle and any entertainment you want to use in-flight. Utilising this bag properly can also help to keep the weight down in your carry-on, helping you avoid any additional airport fees.

With really clever packing, this underseat bag can even replace your carry-on case on shorter trips. Our commerce editor Lauren Burvill can attest to using just Antler’s Chelsea holdall on weekends away. You can also see our full guide to the best underseat flight bags .

Airline economy cabin luggage allowances

  • Air France: 1 small bag, 40X30X15cm, and 1 large bag 55X35X25 cm, 12 kg.
  • British Airways: 1 small bag, 40X30X15cm, 23kg, 1 large bag 56X45X25cm, 23kg.
  • Easyjet: 1 small bag, 45X36x20cm, 15kg and for an extra fee 1 large bag 56X45x25cm.
  • Emirates: 1 small bag and 1 large bag 55X38X20cm, 7kg.
  • Etihad: 1 small bag and 1 large bag 56X36cmX23cm, 7kg.
  • RyanAir: 1 small bag, 40X20X25cm and for an extra fee 1 large bag 55X40X20cm, 10kg.
  • Singapore Airlines: 1 small bag and 1 large bag where the sum of dimensions do not exceed 115cm, 7kg.
  • Virgin Atlantic: 1 small bag and 1 large bag 56X36X23cm, 10kg.

What is the weight limit for carry-on luggage?

Again, it varies between airlines, but most carry-on weight limits are within seven to 15kg, with the majority sitting around 8kg. EasyJet has the heaviest carry-on luggage limit, at a hefty 15kg. If you tend to overpack, investing in a luggage scale can help you avoid any excess fees at check-in. Skyscanner has put together a useful matrix of weight limits for each airline here but, if you’re unsure, it’s best to check the airline’s website directly before flying.

How much should I spend on carry-on luggage?

Ultimately, this is going to come down to your own personal budget and tastes. But the majority of our best carry-on suitcases tend to sit around the £200 to £250 mark. Designer luggage, such as from the likes of Rimowa and Louis Vuitton, will cost much more. But while you can find cheaper suitcases on Amazon , our best luggage picks boast extras such as lifetime guarantees, long warranties and free repairs – as well as superior build quality and good looks. It means spending a little more at the outset is often worth it in the long run, especially for regular travellers.

How we test cabin cases.

Our experts at the GHI put every cabin bag through a series of rigorous tests to see how they fare in real-life scenarios. They weigh them when empty, then pack enough luggage for a long weekend, utilising any internal or external pockets, packing straps and dividers.

Next, they judge each case’s manoeuvrability across common terrains – including tarmac, concrete, carpet and cobbles – to check how stable they are in motion and how easy they are to pull.

They test the durability of the wheels, casing and corners by conducting a thorough drop test, and assess their water resistance by simulating rain in a shower – all this so you can head off on holiday feeling confident that your belongings will be safe and secure.

Read on to discover our top-scorers, as well as all you need to know about hand baggage allowances and the best cabin bag features to look for.

Score: 88/100

This sleek winner performed impressively on test, and thanks to its expandable design, if you like indulging in a spot of shopping on your holidays, then there’s extra room you can unlock (although, do remember, you may need to check it in as a result).

Our testers found it well made, with durable wheels and a hardy, waterproof shell and zip (it didn’t dent on test and no water seeped in). It wasn’t the lightest case, and it was a little unstable at times, especially when we changed directions sharply. However, it has all of Away’s signature finishing touches – coming with a separate washbag, a leather luggage tag and a dedicated cleaning sponge.

Key specifications

Score: 87/100

Available in a selection of vibrant colours, this case’s hard shell belied its affordable price tag and proved durable on test, withstanding rough handling. Even when our testers took it to the extreme by dropping it repeatedly, it only picked up a few scuff marks. Its sturdy wheels offer a smooth run as you dash across tarmac, too.

The only real disappointment was its zip. It moved well but let a small amount of water into the case – something to bear in mind if you get stuck in the rain. Still, this jolly bag is roomy inside and boasts three internal pockets, so you can definitely sneak in a souvenir or two.

Forget any fears of your phone running out of battery, because this nifty cabin bag comes with an accompanying charging pack that can be used in-situ or separately to suit your needs on the go. The interior is also nicely partitioned for easy packing, and the wheels glide effortlessly along.

Overall, the shell proved durable, with only a couple of knocks sustained after our continuous drop test. This sturdy design may be slightly too big for the cabin on some airlines, so if you have a favoured carrier, it's worth checking before you buy. For practicality, however, it’s hard to beat.

Moving seamlessly across every surface we tried it on, this modern spinner is an ideal city break companion. It has four double wheels for maximum portability and its handles are comfortable too.

The cabin bag’s shell was waterproof, but the zip let some water in, so be careful in the rain; given that our testers put it in the shower though, this wouldn't put us off. It fared okay in our drop test too, sustaining only a couple of dents, and we were able to wipe off any scratches with ease.

Antler has also just announced a new lifetime warranty , and the range of fresh colours makes it an eye-catching and savvy buy.

If you need a cabin bag that can also withstand the perils of the hold and the overhead lockers, consider this great value spinner. It moved smoothly and emerged from our durability tests practically unscathed – quite the feat given how much our testers bashed it about.

It felt spacious, with comfortable handles, but some water seeped through the zip at the top. That aside, it’s a reliable design, available in a swathe of cheerful colours at a reasonable price.

Every item can be neatly packed into this clever expandable suitcase. You’ll need to check that it still complies with cabin regulations before flying, but it’s ideal if you want something flexible for holidays that don’t involve plane travel.

It impressed in our waterproofing test, letting no liquid in, and its interior lining can be removed and popped into the washing machine. It suffered a few minor dents to its corners after repeated dropping, but it proved robust in every other way.

Score: 83/100

At just under £50, this lightweight suitcase is a snip. Testers found it moved around easily with sturdy wheels (they barely dropped a point in our durability tests) and a comfortable handle. Its zip-up compartment and adjustable luggage straps mean you can pack your holiday wardrobe tidily, while its shell is watertight. Its zip let some water in though, and the lock isn’t TSA-approved (so avoid if the US is top of your to-visit list).

We’d also recommend keeping it out of the hold if possible as our testers cracked it when throwing it around. Used as a wheel-on however, this wouldn’t be a worry and it comes with a five-year guarantee for added peace of mind.

Score: 82/100

Tripp’s smile-raising, brightly coloured bags are ideal for spotting on a luggage belt if you do need to check them in. Testers also said it would be easy to travel with thanks to four durable and smooth wheels, its spacious interior and a waterproof shell (note its zip wasn’t fully watertight). It has a TSA-approved lock, too.

We’d have liked a side handle for ease when putting your luggage in an overhead locker and there wasn’t much space around the top handle, but the telescopic handle pulled out seamlessly with a good adjustable range.

Score: 80/100

Like the Carl Friedrik Check-In suitcase, this is another buy that exudes luxury. It was easy to pack and moved well (with silent wheels), while its sturdy frame not only kept all water out but fared well in our drop tests too. Not to mention, the locking system keeps everything secure.

Unlike many cabin bags, this has a front pocket with a handy slot for your laptop. But weighing in at 4.3kg, it’s heavier than lots of the other cases on this list, so keep this in mind if you’ll be lifting it a lot. It’s also very expensive, so best suited to frequent travellers.

Hand luggage restrictions

best cabin bags

Confusingly, each airline has its own hand luggage restrictions, meaning one size may not fit all.

Complementary hand luggage allowances are also being tightened up, with many budget airlines limiting theirs to one bag per customer that must fit under the seat in front of you. To take more on board, you’ll have to pay.

If you’re in need of a cabin bag’s worth of luggage, and the flexibility to travel with different airlines, look for a suitcase that meets the strictest requirements. Or, if you’re a frequent flyer, choose one that adheres to the requirements of your favoured airline.

A cabin bag that measures 55 x 40 x 20 cm should suffice for most budget airlines. But for a full breakdown of size and weight restrictions, as well as whether a carry-on is included in your airfare, see our Suitcase Buying Guide .

What to look for in a cabin bag

best travel electricals

Built-in TSA lock

If you regularly fly to the USA, look for a padlock featuring the red Transport Security Administration (TSA) logo. The TSA has a master key for these locks, meaning security staff can open your bag without damaging it.

Every cabin bag listed here features a TSA-approved lock, so you can rest assured that your luggage will stay in one piece!

Cases with handles on the top and sides are easier to manoeuvre and lift. Most top handles are telescopic, extending into two or three different positions to suit your height, and retracting into the case for easier storage.

All our listed cabin bags are four-wheelers, also known as spinner suitcases. In practical terms, this means you can wheel it alongside you instead of tilting it to tow.

Two-wheeled suitcases tend to have slightly larger wheels. They can be easier to pull up and over kerbs, but we generally find spinners better balanced and more versatile.

Most cabin bags feature internal pockets to help keep your packing neat and organised. These often include small integrated pockets, removable laundry bags and larger pouches that can fit a laptop.

External pockets for stowing easily accessible items are usually only found in soft-sided suitcases.

Expandability

Though more commonly a feature of full-size suitcases , some cabin bags have expandable panels that unzip for additional packing space.

The Away Carry On Flex and the Delsey Segur 2.0 provide generous extra capacity, making it ideal if you struggle to resist those last-minute gifts and souvenirs. Just remember to check that its extended size doesn’t exceed your airline’s limit.

Best hand luggage: At a glance

How to choose the best hand luggage for you, is it better to buy a suitcase or a backpack.

This really comes down to personal preference and how you tend to travel.

  • If you’re travelling for business, you might want a suitcase with packing compartments to keep smart clothes neat, and outer pockets to store documents and laptops for easy access.
  • For speedy travel, a backpack is the best option, as you can store it underneath the seat in front of you. It also leaves both hands free for when you’re moving around.
  • If you have back problems or trouble lifting, a lightweight suitcase would be the best option.

Should I go for a hard shell or a soft-sided suitcase?

If you’re travelling with precious cargo, expensive gadgets or plan to buy fragile souvenirs, you should consider the material the case is made from.

  • A hard-shell suitcase will offer the best protection for your belongings  and, although it might pick up a few scuffs, it won’t see as much wear and tear as a canvas or polyester bag.
  • Hard-shell cases rarely feature outer pockets, though, which can be handy for storing easy-to-grab items.
  • If low weight is an absolute priority, then a soft-shell case is a great weight saving option. Just bear in mind that it won’t last as long as a hard-shell.
  • A good soft-sided suitcase should come with compression straps that allow you to keep things secure and to reduce the overall size of the bag depending on how much you’ve stuffed inside.

How many wheels should my suitcase have?

Suitcases with four wheels are the easiest to move around, and especially so when heavily loaded. Two-wheeled suitcases are still very common, and perfectly usable, but bear in mind that they’re more awkward to manoevure.

  • A four-wheel “spinner” suitcase is the easiest to move around. Weight is spread evenly across four corners of the case and, as the spinner wheels can move in all directions rather than just back and forth, you’ll be able to glide through airports with a smooth 360˚ motion.
  • You may prefer the simplicity of two fixed wheels, though, and this does tend to be the cheaper option. You’ll also shave off an all-important couple of centimetres from the overall case dimensions.

1. eastpak tranverz s wheeled luggage: the best soft-sided case.

Price when reviewed: From £96 | Check price at Amazon

Eastpak Tranverz S Wheeled Luggage: The best soft-sided case

Eastpak is well known for its street-smart and functional rucksacks and cases. Having initially produced bags for the US military, it knows a thing or two about producing durable, hard-wearing pieces, and all cases come with a reassuring 30-year warranty. This two-wheeled case features two large inner compartments, making it easy to organise your gear, and a handy front pocket for smaller items such as passports, iPads and chargers.

The lightweight telescopic handle and the padded handles on the top and side are easy to grip, and the strong double-stitching protects against airport-security scuffs. The exterior compression straps let you pack things down neatly and securely, depending on how much you’re carrying, and the soft sides fold down for easy storage when it’s not in use. There are loads of colours and designs on offer, too, from business-friendly black to bold graphic prints.

Key specs – Dimensions: 51 x 32.5 x 24cm; Weight: 2.3kg; Capacity: 42l; Number of wheels: 2

Aerolite Lightweight: The best for paid Ryanair carry-on luggage

If you’re heading away for longer than a couple of nights, chances are to get the most out of your Seville/Porto/Budapest jaunt you’ll want a few outfits-and-a-washbag-worth of luggage. For those forking out for paid carry-on luggage on Ryanair, this lightweight suitcase from Aerolite is the exact maximum size you can take. Its hard-shell exterior means you can cram it to your heart’s content without worrying about it bulging out of the baggage gauge at the airport.

Looks-wise, it’s pretty unassuming (who wants loud luggage anyway?), but is available in a range of colours from Wine to Rose Gold, and feels much more premium than the price tag lets on. Our 5ft 4in reviewer had one small bugbear: the handle was a little on the short side, so word of warning that it may not be comfortable for the more statuesque among us.

Key specs – Dimensions: 20 x 35 x 55cm; Weight: 2.6kg; Capacity: 34l; Number of wheels: 4

3. kono hard shell spinner cabin: the best for small spaces.

Price when reviewed: £50 | Check price at Amazon

Kono Hard Shell Spinner Cabin: The best for small spaces

This little case ticks so many boxes. It’s really dinky – not even the strictest of airlines could have an issue with its proportions. But it’s also eye-catching (there are other bright colours to choose from too) so it’ll be hard to lose. It’s built to last, thanks to a hard shell casing but also really lightweight thanks to an aluminium frame. On top of all this, it has 360-degree spinning wheels, which mean it’s a breeze to manoeuvre.

Inside, straps keep things neat. The handle was easy to operate – often in less expensive cases this isn’t the case – extending and contracting smoothly. There’s also a code lock, which is handy.

Price when reviewed:  £45 |  Check price at Argos

IT Luggage: The best lightweight case

With an extremely lightweight design ( 1.56kg) and an unusually wide handle, this cleverly designed piece of kit is a breeze to wheel through airport terminals. The two easy-glide skate wheels allow for smooth 360˚ movement, and although it might not seem sturdy, it features a solid fibreglass frame and comes with a ten-year guarantee.

Tidy travellers will appreciate the four internal mesh pockets for neat storage and the three external pockets for easy-to-access items. The extra-wide handle can take a bit of getting used to if you’re more familiar with telescopic handles, but it’s easy to manoeuvre and is fitted with silica-gel padding for comfort and an easy push control.

6. American Tourister Bon Air Spinner: The best all-round cabin suitcase

Price when reviewed: £95 | Check price at Amazon

American Tourister Bon Air Spinner: The best all-round cabin suitcase

Made from polypropylene, this hard-shell case is strong and sturdy but surprisingly light and easy to manoeuvre. Available in a range of bright colours, all with a sleek ridged design, the American Tourister Bon Air is both functional and fashionable and easy to spot on the carousel if it happens to get bumped to the hold.

Inside there are two roomy sections: a zipped compartment with two outer mesh pockets (great for liquids) and an open-sided area that can be secured with elastic ribbons. The four wheels make for smooth 360˚ rolling and for added security, there’s a fixed three-digit lock and a discreet address label at the back of the case.

7. cabin max backpack: the best budget hand luggage.

Price when reviewed: £35 | Check price at Amazon

Cabin Max Backpack: The best budget hand luggage

Designed in the UK, this compact carry-on backpack weighs less than 1kg but is deceptively roomy, with a 44l capacity. It opens like a suitcase rather than a traditional rucksack, so you don’t need to squish all of your gear into it from the top down. A large front zip pocket has handy compartments for accessories and the side compression straps keep things neat.

It complies with most European budget airline hand-luggage rules and its nifty soft-sided design means it’s easy to stow under the seat in front of you. And if you’re schlepping across town with it, you’ll appreciate the adjustable padded straps and top carry handle. The showerproof 600D polyester material will protect your possessions from the elements too.

It’s functional rather than fashionable and it’s not as robust as some of our other picks. However, for a no-frills, cabin-friendly bag to accompany you on weekend escapes, you can’t go wrong with this budget buy.

8. tipu tiger trunki: the best hand luggage for children.

Price when reviewed: £45 | Check price at Amazon

Tipu Tiger Trunki: The best hand luggage for children

It’s hard to go to an airport these days and not see at least a handful of children either wheeling or being wheeled about on a Trunki. These compact little cases manage to be useful, practical and fun all at once. Tired little people can be transported to faraway gates with ease and there’s decent storage space – you can easily pack enough clothes for a weekend away.

The exterior, including wheels, is strong, hard plastic that can withstand all sorts of bumps and bashes. Inside, straps (a Teddy Bear seatbelt) hold contents in place. The clasps are easy for even little hands to master – just don’t overfill the case – and can even be locked with a cute little key. As well as two handles, there’s a long strap for shoulder carrying or it can be used as a means of towing.

Tipu Tiger is by no means the only Trunki in town: they come in a variety of themes and colourways from unicorns to fire trucks.

Key specs – Dimensions: 46 x 20.5 x 31cm; Weight: 1.7kg; Capacity: 18l; Number of wheels: 4

9. antler stamford 2.0 cabin: the best-looking suitcase.

Price when reviewed:  £200 |  Check price at Antler

Antler Stamford 2.0 Cabin: The best-looking suitcase

For anyone who thinks it doesn’t really matter what cabin luggage looks like, we give you the Stamford Cabin 2.0. It’s impossibly sleek and smart. We opted for the khaki model, but it’s available in black and putty, too. All of them have a hard polycarbonate shell casing in a matt finish, which makes inevitable scratches much less noticeable.

But this has much more to recommend it than just being easy on the eye. It’s seriously well-made, boasting a combination of British design and Japanese invention. The latter created the Lisof tyre fabric on the 360-degree hinomoto spinner wheels, meaning the experience of wheeling the case is almost impossibly quiet and smooth.

Inside is just as smart with a host of different compartments, including a pocketed packing divider that keeps things neat and crisp. It really feels that everything has been deeply considered and painstakingly accomplished. It is a joy to look at and a pleasure to use.

Passengers put their carry-on hand luggage into the overhead lockers on a Ryanair flight

Holiday luggage: the best carry-on bags to take on board

Tales of turmoil at airports make hand baggage the route to choose – but be aware of cabin allowances

F irst it was the extra charges applied by some airlines that made travelling light appear attractive. Now, reports of horrifically long bag drop queues, lost luggage and baggage mountains have provided extra reasons to squeeze your holiday gear into a carry-on bag.

Your chance of getting to your destination with everything you need will be greatly enhanced by keeping your hands on it at all times and, depending on the airline, it will possibly save you considerable sums.

However, there are restrictions on what and how much you are allowed to bring on board the plane – and if you get it wrong, you could have a nasty shock at the airport if you find you have to check it in after all.

Buying a suitcase specifically designed as carry-on luggage, and which can be put into the overhead lockers, will help take the stress out of packing and avoid any unexpected surcharges at the airport.

The best cabin bags this summer

The consumer body Which? recently published a list of the top luggage retailers selling bags specifically designed to fit in the overhead locker on a plane.

Its survey of shoppers ranked Eastpak bags as the best, followed by John Lewis, Antler, IT Luggage, Samsonite, Cabin Max and Marks & Spencer.

Customers were asked to rate their purchases on their durability, packing space and value for money.

Eastpak Morepak bag

Guy Hobbs, the acting editor of Which? Travel, says: “There’s no need to pay over the odds for your cabin luggage this summer. Our research based on the experiences of thousands of holidaymakers found there are bargain bags that closely match their pricier rivals for quality.”

We’ve rounded up some of the best-value options from the highest-rated firms, and worked out which airlines will accept them as carry-on luggage.

John Lewis Girona 55cm suitcase

The John Lewis Girona four-wheel cabin case has 55 x 35 x 20cm dimensions, making it suitable for Jet2, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights.

You would also be able to take it on board if you paid extra with Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet .

This week it was priced at £45 and, when we looked, was sold out online but in stock in some stores.

Eastpak’s Morepack bag measures 50 x 32 x 17cm, weighs 720g and can carry 35 litres.

Its £90 price tag makes it one of the more expensive options but it can be taken on most flights.

Passengers who have paid for Ryanair or Wizz Air priority boarding or easyJet carry-on luggage will be able to use this bag on board the plane.

It also fits within BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic’s free carry-on luggage requirements.

Cabin Max Anode 30L underseat cabin case

The £50 Cabin Max Anode 30 litre underseat cabin case is designed to avoid having to pay extra for baggage on easyJet flights.

It is a compact size at 45 x 36 x 20cm – matching the exact maximum dimensions allowed on board easyJet flights for free.

It also fits the requirements set by BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic to take on board for free.

It is slightly too big to take on a Ryanair or Wizz Air flight free of charge, but would be acceptable if you paid for priority.

The £40 Cabin Max Lyon cabin trolley backpack comes in at 55 x 40 x 20cm, including wheels, and weighs 1.7kg.

It matches Ryanair’s maximum carry-on allowance for priority customers, and would also be allowed if you paid extra with easyJet and Wizz Air.

There would be no charge for taking it on a BA, Jet2 or Virgin Atlantic flight.

Marks & Spencer’s £45 Porto cabin suitcase is 54 x 20 x 37cm, and has a 41-litre capacity.

Again, priority customers of the three budget airlines would be able to use this bag on board, and it meets BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic requirements.

IT Luggage Unicorn unicorn and stars print case

IT Luggage is an online-only retailer selling a wide range of bags suitable for cabin luggage. The World’s Lightest unicorn and stars print case is the cheapest on its website at £40. Its dimensions are 55 x 40 x 20cm, it weighs 1.8kg and carries 37 litres.

Its dimensions exactly match the allowance for Ryanair priority customers, meaning it is also suitable for all of the other airlines featured.

The Resonating cabin bag is more expensive at £70 but it also gives you more packing space, with 48 litres.

With dimensions of 54 x 36 x 25cm, it would fit on all the same flights as the cheaper model, and weighs 3kg.

Antler’s Clifton vanity case is the smallest pick of the bunch at 16 x 34 x 27cm, so would fit on Ryanair and easyJet flights for free.

The bag is also fairly expensive at £79, although the brand was highly rated by Which? customers.

It is quite tiny, with just enough space for a change of clothes and some toiletries, meaning it is probably only suitable for short trips.

Alternatively, you could take it as your smaller piece of hand luggage on BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic flights, or if you pay to upgrade on easyJet, Ryanair or Wizz Air.

Cabin baggage allowances

A sign in the Ryanair check-in area

Airlines have different definitions of what counts as carry-on luggage. Ryanair customers can take on one small personal bag with the dimensions 40 x 20 x 25cm free of charge.

If you want to take a bigger bag on board, you’ll have to pay between £8 and £32 extra for priority, which allows you to travel with a 10kg wheelie suitcase up to 55 x 40 x 20cm.

Meanwhile, easyJet passengers can take a bag up to a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20cm, including any handles or wheels, free of charge. It must fit under the seat in front of them – and can weigh up to 15kg.

Customers who want to bring a large cabin bag – up to 56 x 45 x 25cm – have to pay extra for an upfront or extra-legroom seat, or book the add-on when they buy their ticket, with prices starting at £5.99.

British Airways allows travellers to bring a handbag or laptop bag with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 15cm for free.

Passengers are also allowed to bring a cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm, with a maximum weight of 23kg, for no extra charge.

Customers booking with Virgin Atlantic can take a 23 x 36 x 56cm cabin bag, weighing a maximum of 10kg, for free.

Jet2 passengers can take one piece of hand luggage on board free of charge, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56 x 45 x 25cm, including any wheels and handles.

They can also bring a small personal item on board – such as a handbag, laptop bag or airport purchase – as long as it will fit under the seat in front.

Wizz Air allows passengers to bring a 40 x 30 x 20cm bag on board for free but customers who upgrade to priority – for an extra charge starting at about £4 – can take a 55 x 40 x 23cm case. Wheels aren’t included in the dimensions but they must not add more than 5cm on to the size of the bag.

Travel Backpacks Backpacks are the classic choice, not only for travel but also for work, school, etc. They typically come in 30-70L capacity, suitable for anything from a weekend getaway to a months-long trip. They make for the perfect carry-on and personal bags . Shop our range of airline-approved CabinZero backpacks to skip the queues, avoid luggage fees, and enjoy the freedom that suitcases can’t give you.
Travel Shoulder Bag Compared to backpacks, the CabinZero shoulder bags offer a more laid-back and effortless way to carry your belongings. You don’t have to dig around; their organisations allow quick and easy access to your essentials.
Travel Bum Bag If safety and theft are your concern, the CabinZero Hip Packs are the safest type of bag to carry. These can be worn close to your body and prevent unwanted hands from getting to your valuables. Plus, some carriers don’t count them towards your carry-on or personal item, which is always a win in our book.
Travel Crossbody Bag If you prefer something sizable enough to store additional items yet still rock a compact profile, the CabinZero crossbody bag fits the bill. It’s the best of both worlds. They can be slung in the front or on the back for quick access to ID, travel documents, water bottles, and more.
Travel Bag Accessories - Packing Cube & Rain Cover Keep your belongings organised and protected further with the CabinZero packing cubes and rain cover . Both can be applied to any of our backpacks, streamlining the packing (and unpacking) process and making your time on the road a breeze.

Essential Features for Travel Bags

How do you pick the pack that can accommodate what you need? It’s a simple question but requires much thought. Since you’ve already determined what you want, here are some pointers to pick the perfect pack

A Pack That Lasts, Just As You Are

Everything starts and ends with durability. Opt for abrasion-resistant and tear-proof fabrics like Cordura nylon, ripstop nylon, or high-density polyester. These materials can withstand wear and tear better than regular nylon or canvas.

Zippers are often the most overlooked. But when you experience a quality zipper or slider, you’d want nothing less. Look for reputable brands like YKK, which have smooth teeth and strong pulls.

Choose a backpack with a long warranty, indicating the manufacturer's confidence in its durability. All of CabinZero packs come with a 10-year warranty, which can be extended to 25 years with a few steps.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Travel With No Sweat

A backpack is as good as how well it can carry and be worn on your back. Sure, you can pack a lot, but that means nothing if your back screams for breaks after 5 minutes of walking. Besides making sure it fits, look for the following features if you value comfort:

  • Hip and chest belts
  • Padded back panel and shoulder straps
  • Adjustable straps
  • Internal and external frames
  • Air channels or mesh fabric for ventilation
  • Breathable and lightweight materials like nylon.

Worry Less, Travel More

No one should spend much time safeguarding valuables during travel. We mean, you should, but there has to be an easier way, isn’t it? Leaving them at home or hotels is a good point, but what about traversing, exploring, and flying?

That’s when security features on your backpacks come to the rescue. Lockable zippers, hidden compartments, and RFID-blocking technology are what you should look for in a secured backpack.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Expandability

Air travel can be strict, especially about what and how much you can bring on board. That’s why choosing a pack that is airline-approved is crucial, especially if you fly on a budget . Besides the size, you also need to pay attention to how squishable your packs of choice can be.

For instance, the CainZero Classic lineup features a lightweight and compact profile which fits the majority of airlines. But they truly shine when you want to shrink your loads. Simply tighten your neatly packed CabinZero bag using compression straps. Your carry-on/personal item will be less bulky, easier to carry, and less noticeable to the security officers‘ eyes.

Note : Always pack reasonably. No one can help you if you try to bring bulky/oversized/overweight bags on board, which may lead to additional fees.

How To Know Which Bag Is Best For Travelling

No two trips are the same. Some may find themselves leisurely strolling around Paris streets, while others may be trekking in the rugged landscapes of Iceland. Knowing the diverse travel styles and needs, we offer a range of travel backpacks and accessories. Anyone will find what they are looking for.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Know What You Want

Where are you going? Is it a city break, a beach retreat, or a rugged trek? Some backpacks, like the Classic, are designed for short walks and day trips with their minimalist style. Others, like the Military and ADV collections, are better suited for hiking and rugged adventure thanks to the added hip belts and paddings.

How long are you travelling? A weekend getaway needs a companion that is about 28-32L. A month-long exploration calls for something with a bigger volume: about 44-50L. If you plan for a half-day trip, a mini backpack such as Classic Flight 12L is fine.

Are there any features you’ll need? What type of opening do you prefer: clamshell, roll top, stuff sack, etc.? Are water-resistant important to you? Do you require a water bottle pocket on the side or a water reservoir? Ask yourself as many questions as possible, and you will get there.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Define Your Travel Style

It’s the age-old question: carry-on or checked bags ? Ask yourself if you want to travel hassle-free or if you want to bring as much as you can.  When you plan to travel in groups, with families, and especially with kids and the elders, check your luggage.

On the other hand, if your trip lasts less than a month, the answer is likely the former. One-bag travel is a life-changing experience, one where you don’t have to deal with bag-dropping counters, long queues, excess fees, and risks of damaged/lost luggage.

There’s nothing wrong with one way or another (or both). But if you are a minimalist traveller or want to travel as hassle-free as possible, travel light is the way.

cabin bags for air travel uk

Invest In Quality

You may be set back by tens or hundreds of pounds, but the benefits you get from quality backpacks are immeasurable. You are set for years of travel without worrying about replacing or fixing anything.

When you want to travel light in a minimalist way, the CabinZero Classic is perfect for you. These are made from 600D Polyester material with water-resistant coating, ensuring additional protection. The upgraded Classic Tech includes an external laptop compartment on the back and a water bottle pocket.

Anticipating a rough road ahead? You can’t go wrong with the Military lineups . Made from 1,000D nylon fabric, they are ready to handle anything you throw at them. Plus, there is the MOLLE webbing, which is handy to attach additional gear.

Last but not least, the ADV and ADV Pro backpacks. They are the most premium CabinZero backpacks, but you get what you pay for: padded hip belt, Nylon 500D Rip-Stop fabric, Eva foam back panel, etc. everything you need for an extended trek at a volcano or an adventure through the forest.

Travelling with rubbish luggage (we’ve all been there) can be a real hassle, so it always pays to see what’s out there before you buy. Whether you’re in the market for a large check-in suitcase , a smaller cabin bag or a weekend duffle bag for dreamy city breaks and shorter getaways, there’s something for every travel scenario.

When it comes to choosing your new travel companion, there are several factors to think about, not least how it looks. But, beyond looking enviably chic on the luggage carousel, it also needs to do a job, and do it well; our belongings need to be organised, safe, and easy to manoeuvre from A to B.

Then, there are airline regulations. Forking out for excess baggage fees is the last thing anyone wants when setting off on a holiday, so it’s always best to check whether your luggage is the right size and weight that will be accepted before you fly. Luckily, many big-name luggage brands make it easy by letting us search the range by the airline we’re travelling with.

So where do you begin? For a range of price points, check out the likes of Tripp and M&S (which has its own range of luggage) if you’re on the hunt for budget-friendly options. Antler and Briggs & Riley are more premium, while Samsonite is worth a look for kids’ suitcases (think ride-on and Disney-themed designs).

Love or loathe packing, our guide to the best luggage brands will make the process as hassle-free as possible, from Eastpak to Thule and more.

The best luggage brands for 2024 are:

  • Tripp – cheap and cheerful basics, Tripp.co.uk
  • Antler – a veteran of premium , well-considered design, Antler.co.uk
  • Samsonite – luggage solutions for the whole family, Samsonite.co.uk
  • Kipling – fun and functional, Kipling.com
  • Thule – utilitarian designs that mean business, Thule.com

It’s hardly a surprise that Amazon is home to an overwhelming range of luggage brands, from Ted Baker to Bellroy. Beyond big brands, though, look to the Amazon Basics range. The price of its suitcases sit comfortably below the £100 mark, and while the retail giant’s own range is pretty limited, it could be a good port of call for shopping essentials on a budget, from packing cubes and luggage sets to this wheeled cabin bag , which should fit beneath most airline chairs and in overhead compartments.

Visit Amazon.co.uk now

Having been around for 100 years (almost exactly), premium luggage label Antler specialises in swanky, sophisticated and, let’s be honest, quite expensive luggage solutions. From matching sets to expandable cabin bags , everything has a lifetime warranty. The colourways are lovely if you don’t love bright colours and, having taken the Clifton large suitcase for a spin ourselves, we can tell you that you’re in for a smooth ride. We were very proud to wheel ours around the airport.

Visit Antler.co.uk now

You’ll be able to find affordable luggage sets, bags and hard and soft shell cases at It Luggage, but it’s the variety of kids’ luggage that caught our attention. How cute is this scratch-resistant Daxie the sausage dog design ? As for the adults, the over-packers will make good use of the brand’s expandable options , and those in the market for a glam, flashy find won’t be disappointed, from its leopard print and high-shine to metallic finishes, you’re in for a treat.

Visit Itluggage.com now

Samsonite is one of the oldest and most recognised names in the game, just mind the price range, which spans from £125 to £1,000. From lightweight to personalised and recycled features, there’s something for everyone. You can expect everything from business-appropriate designs to ride-on suitcases for little globetrotters , there’s something for everyone.

Visit Samsonite.co.uk now

When cheap and cheerful is what you’re going for, affordable brand Tripp should be on your radar, with many of its suitcases costing less than £100. You won’t be missing out on colourful designs, from its metallic champagne to banana yellow suitcases, and, whether it’s a holdall , duffle bag , hardshell suitcase or carry-on , everything comes with a five-year guarantee (so, if it’s faulty, it’ll be replaced). Attention, over-packers; take note of expandable options, such as this bestselling hardshell, four-wheel suitcase , which is just £39.50.

Sweden-born brand Thule was founded in 1942 and means business. Sleek, minimalistic and utilitarian by design, the range is tested to the extreme to ensure it’s tough as nails. In fact, Thule’s Aion carry-on spinner was the toughest carry-on case we tried in our review. You’ll also find checked luggage options, as well as duffle bags , travel organisers and backpacks .

M&S Collection

You can count on M&S to stay within budget. Think suitcases , vanity cases and weekend bags to boot (but the line isn’t huge). Expect TSA locks, packing straps and a decent pastel and earthy colour range. The Oslo is a tried and tested favourite for packing light. All M&S cases have a five or 10-year guarantee, including this set of three suitcases , which could see your luggage needs for less than £200.

Eastpak may be famous for its ubiquitous backpacks, but it also stocks luggage with a 30-year warranty, so rest assured, you’re getting your money’s worth. From rainbow-accented backpacks to denim-feel cabin bags and water-resistant, vegan check-in luggage , bright colourways are available, but this black tarp duffle looks particularly swish. Prices start around £100 for suitcases, but if you’re splurging, this business travel suitcase comes with built-in sleeves for your tech.

Briggs & Riley

If you’re in the market for something a little more premium, Briggs & Riley is one of the brands to look into. Appealing to frequent travellers who take their packing seriously, the designs feature compression-expansion technology, so you can fit in extra clothes. The brand offers rolling duffle bags and extra large trunks , and while it’s pricey, we think the garment spinner – with its compact, crease-free way to transport clothing – could be worth the splurge. For especially glam jet-setters, go for the monogram personalisation.

Beyond its monkey mascot, Kipling focuses on fun (think patterned or pastel pink) and functional luggage solutions. From its wheeled duffle bags to two and four-wheel suitcases , the brand’s price points start at around £100 and for its larger cases reach upwards of £270. We’ve got our eye on this weekender bag and its protective place to pop your laptop while you’re on the move.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

These ‘budget’ airlines are more expensive than BA

author image

British Airways planes

When heading away on our summer holidays, most of us will always choose the ‘low-cost’ carrier option – especially if it’s a short-haul flight.

However, sometimes ‘low-cost’ doesn’t mean cheapest, and you may get better deals with more traditionally expensive airline options.

According to UK consumer champion Which? , extra charges for luggage and seat selection mean that the likes of Ryanair and other budget airlines may not have the cheapest tickets this summer.

The organisation compared the price of three popular April flights from London airports. The destinations were Malaga, Athens and Naples. At first, Ryanair’s initial fare was cheaper than British Airways and Jet2.

However, after the addition of bags and seat selection, British Airways came out on top in two of the three routes. Meanwhile, Jet2 was more affordable than Ryanair on the other route.

Ryanair’s basic fare only permits you to bring a backpack or handbag that fits under the seat in front of you, and parents have to pay to sit next to children as young as three years old.

Extra charges

For the return journey from London to Malaga chosen by Which? for the investigation, Ryanair’s base fare was initially £36 cheaper than British Airways. However, after adding a cabin bag for the overhead locker and selecting a seat with Ryanair, BA turned out to be £25 more affordable.

Then for a return trip from London to Athens, Ryanair seemed to offer a £32 saving compared to Jet2. Yet, upon adding a bag and selecting a seat, Jet2 became £29 cheaper than Ryanair.

Both British Airways and Jet2 allow for complimentary cabin luggage for the overhead compartment. Also, both airlines typically assign seats for travel companions together without extra charge.

Wizz Air is another airline often touted as cheaper and better value, but according to Which?, its extras are even more expensive. Placing a bag in the overhead compartment will set you back an eye-watering £89 for each return trip. Seat selection is also costly and will see travellers forking out £24 for a return booking.

So, what was the end result and what airline is the best option for your pocket this summer? Well, if you are travelling with a bag that fits under your seat, traditional budget airlines like easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air are still the cheapest. Yet, if you want to take enough luggage for a week’s holiday or wish to sit next to your child or companion, you are advised by Which? to look at British Airways instead.

The consumer champion noted that BA early morning flights from Gatwick can have low prices with generous luggage allowances.

Air Canada apologizes after removing AFN National Chief's headdress from cabin

'Our headdresses don’t belong in garbage bags,' National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak wrote on Facebook

Air Canada has apologized for a “regrettable” incident involving the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak.

Air Canada apologizes after removing AFN National Chief's headdress from cabin Back to video

Woodhouse Nepinak was flying from Montreal to Fredericton, N.B., Thursday, when her headdress, which was in a case, was removed from the cabin and placed in a plastic bag by airline staff.

Woodhouse Nepinak shared the incident in a Facebook post. “I won’t be letting anyone take away my headdress or case again,” she wrote. “Air Canada needs a protocol for First Peoples so that we are not harassed for our sacred items. Our headdresses don’t belong in garbage bags by airlines.”

She says the airline responded to her complaints by offering her a 15 per cent discount on her next flight.

“It must have been a generic response,” Woodhouse Nepinak said in an interview, calling the entire experience “humiliating” and “unbelievable.”

Photos in the post show the case being carried by airline staff on the tarmac, while wrapped in a plastic bag.

The post quickly gained traction on social media.

Alvin Fiddler, grand chief of Nishnawbe Aski Nation, called the incident “shameful.”

“I believe you owe our National Chief an apology,” Fiddler posted to X, formerly Twitter, and tagged Air Canada. “And please ensure all members of your team are aware and follow all protocols on handling of sacred items. Miigwetch.”

⁦ @AirCanada ⁩, this is shameful. I believe you owe our National Chief an apology. And please ensure all members of your team are aware and follow all protocols on handling of sacred items. Miigwetch. https://t.co/MrCVsGZgCv — Alvin Fiddler (@gcfiddler) April 25, 2024

In media reports, the airline said it had followed up with the national chief to apologize and better understand the situation, while adding it’s also reviewing its policies and following up on the matter internally.

“Air Canada understands the importance of accommodating customers with items and symbols of sacred cultural significance, and in the past the chiefs have been able to travel while transporting their headdresses in the cabin,” the statement said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the incident “unacceptable” and a “mistake” on the part of Air Canada.

Trudeau said the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 calls to action are not just about the federal government, but for industry and Canadians to be responsible partners who have a sense of understanding about the cultural importance of items like this.

Perry Bellegarde, a former AFN national chief, told the Globe and Mail that it’s “essential for (Air Canada) to greatly strengthen their anti-racism training for all personnel from the flight attendants to the CEO.”

He added that he has travelled “very often” with a headdress in its case and “never experienced any difficulties transporting it as carry-on luggage.”

“I’d be pleased to advise Air Canada on a good path forward,” he added.

The federal minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, Gary Anandasangaree, said the airline must “make things right” with the national chief.

Anandasangaree told The Canadian Press he is “outraged” that the incident occurred and added it isn’t the first time ceremonial items have been “treated improperly.”

Woodhouse Nepinak, who is from Pinaymootang First Nation, Manitoba, was elected national chief in December 2023. She previously served as the AFN’s Manitoba Regional Chief.

On New Year’s Day, Woodhouse Nepinak received the headdress in a transfer ceremony by the Blackfoot Confederacy of the Piikani Nation in Alberta. The Assembly of First Nations called the headdress transfer “one of the highest honours among First Nations ceremonies for leadership.”

“It validates and celebrates Chiefs’ achievements, as the eagle feathers that make up the headdress are sacred and have been blessed to help support leadership in their travels and challenges,” the Assembly noted in a news release.

Former justice minister David Lametti told CBC that “there aren’t many chiefs across Canada who would have that kind of headdress.”

“It is critically important that it be treated as a sacred object, and I don’t understand why this would have been treated with anything less than the appropriate amount of dignity that it deserves,” he said.

In a follow up Facebook post, Woodhouse Nepinak showed the headdress and its case had been returned to the cabin and was being stored above her seat.

“Megwetch for prayers,” she wrote. “Made it home to my family.”
