Application for a Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa - TRV)

You need to give your biometrics.

In most cases, you now need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics) after you apply.

Find out who needs to give biometrics and how the new application process works.

Biometrics and the application process

Image that represents the different stages of the application process and biometrics.

We refer to your fingerprints and photo as biometrics. We collect biometrics for most applications. Find out what happens from when you submit your application to when you get to Canada and where biometrics fits in the process.

1. Apply for your visitor visa, study permit or work permit

If you want to visit, study or work in Canada, make sure you’re eligible to apply. Use our application guides to help fill out your application properly, then submit your application.

Avoid processing delays by sending us a complete application .

2. Get your fingerprints and photo taken

If you’re between 14 and 79 years old, you probably need to give your fingerprints and photo (biometrics). You only need to give your biometrics once every 10 years to make repeat trips to Canada easier.

  • You must pay the  biometrics fee   when you submit your application.  Otherwise you may experience delays.
  • Get this done  as soon as you get the letter  from us that tells you to give biometrics.
  • You have  30 days  to do this from the date on the letter.

Find out who needs to give , how to give , and  where to give your biometrics .

COVID-19: Biometrics deadline

Some biometrics collection sites are closed. If the site closest to you is closed, we’ll extend your deadline to give your biometrics. Find out how COVID-19 is affecting biometrics .

3. We process your application

After we get your biometrics, we start processing your application. See how long it takes to process your application.

If we need more information from you, we’ll contact you.

4. We make a decision on your application

When we finish reviewing your application, we let you know if you’re approved to come to Canada. If you are, we issue your documents.

If your application is refused, we send you a letter that tells you why.

5. You travel to Canada (if you’re approved)

Make sure you travel with the documents we gave you. This includes travel documents like a visitor visa, study or work permits or an eTA (electronically linked to your passport).

Airline staff and border service officers at ports of entry will ask to see your travel documents. If you don’t have them, you may not be able to board your flight to Canada.

Make sure children under 18 travel with the right documents .

6. We check your identity when you arrive in Canada

When you arrive, we check your identity to make sure that you are the same person who was approved to travel to Canada. We may use your biometrics to do this.

If we can’t verify your identity, you may be detained by a border services officer. These officers help protect the health and safety of Canadians.

If the officer determines that you’re not admissible to Canada, you won’t be allowed to enter Canada. If you came by air, you’ll have to take a return flight to where you came from.

7. You’re allowed to enter Canada

If you pass the identity check and meet the entry requirements , the border services officer stamps your passport and lets you know how long you can stay in Canada. You’re normally allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Children under 18 must meet the same entry requirements as adults. The border services officer may ask minor children to show other documents depending on whether the child is travelling alone or with someone.

Basic entry requirements

You must meet some basic requirements to enter Canada. You must:

  • have a valid travel document, like a passport
  • be in good health
  • have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, financial assets or family—that will take you back to your home country
  • convince an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit
  • The amount of money you will need depends on how long you will stay and if you will stay in a hotel, or with friends or relatives.

Some people are not admissible to Canada, which means they are not allowed to enter the country. You can be inadmissible for several reasons, including being involved in:

  • criminal activity
  • human rights violations
  • organized crime

Updated: June 29th, 2023

Whether you're planning to move to Canada and want to see what it's like, visit your Canadian family or are purely interested in holidaying in the Great White North, you will likely need a Canadian visitor visa or a tourist visa to enter Canada. There are two types of tourist visas to Canada - Single entry and multiple entry visitor visas. Each of these has its own Canada tourist visa requirements.

These requirements are based on the intention of your stay, your country of origin, the length of your planned visit and links to your home country, amongst many others. To help figure out what you need to do to ensure you get your tourist visa, we've created a Canada visitor visa checklist. This way, you can ensure you don't leave anything out of your visa application. However, first, you must find out if you need a visa or just an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) .

Do I Need a Canada Visitor Visa (Also Known as Canada Tourist Visa) Tourist Visa to Canada?

Canada | Canada Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa)

Canada has a list of countries that are considered visa-exempt. You do not need a visitor visa if you are from one of the following countries. Instead, you will need an Electronic eTA Canada. The visa-exempt countries are as follows:

Learn more about eTA Canada .

What Are the Two Types of Canada Visitor Visa?

Two types of Visitor Visas | Canada Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa)

Each Canadian tourist visa has its own expressed purpose and uses.

Multiple-entry Visa

This visa will let you enter Canada for multiple periods of up to 6 months over ten years or when your passport next expires. But, once your passport expires, you can apply for a new Canada visitor visa.

Single-entry Visa

This lets you travel to Canada only one time, but this is usually under specific circumstances such as:

  • The purpose of your entry to Canada is limited to an official visit
  • You're eligible for a fee exemption
  • You're taking part in a special Canadian event
  • It's in keeping with the approved country procedures and guidelines

Once you leave Canada, you must apply for another visa to return.

Now that you know the types of visas, let's dive into what exactly makes a visitor visa applicant eligible.

Updated Canadian Travel Requirements

Visitor visa requirements | Canada Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa)

While the visa types differ, the basic requirements of each visa remain essentially the same. Therefore, before you begin your application process, you must fulfill all necessary criteria via this Canada visitor visa checklist. This is as follows. You must:

  • Be in good health
  • Have a valid travel document, such as a passport
  • Have no criminal or immigration-related convictions
  • In particular, if you've been convicted of any criminal activity, human rights violations or organized crime, you will likely be rejected for any Canadian visa.
  • Have clear ties to your home country
  • Prove you will leave Canada once you're completed your visit
  • Have enough funds to cover your expenses. This amount depends on your accommodation plans and whether or not you will need to pay for your accommodation (like with a hotel or Airbnb)

If you're unsure how to fulfil all of the Canadian visitor visa requirements or how to get your required documents, click the button below to talk to a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC). RCICs can give you a full eligibility assessment and ensure you take every step of your application process correctly.

Why Travel to Canada

The Great White North is a top travel destination with many unique offerings to offer visitors. Here are some of the reasons you should consider a visit.

Canada is a destination of great diversity. It is a melting pot where all cultures are celebrated, making it ideal for immigrants and tourists. But that's not where the diversity ends. As the world's second-largest country it has a vast range of climates, landscapes, cities and rural settings.

Charming in Every Season

While many Canadians may need to escape their icy winters, the country is considered a winter wonderland by winter sports enthusiasts and those seeking the novelty of snow-capped just about everything.

But it's not the winter season that is magical. There's the charm of the fall's rust-coloured leaf aesthetic, the beautiful blooming of tulips and cherry blossoms in the spring and the impressive variety of summer activities during the summer months. It has to be said, though, there is no shortage of splendour in the Great White North, regardless of the season you choose to wander through it.

The Whole Family Will Love it!

With abundant magnificent outdoor settings , Canada is one of the most family-friendly countries to visit. You and your loved ones can enjoy the snow together, explore the great lakes, hike in the Canadian Rockies, or explore the country's amazing national parks and museums. There is no shortage of fun things to do as a family.

Endless Opportunities for Adventure

Canada is the adventurer's dream destination. For the thrill-seekers, there's skiing, snowboarding and some of the most intense hiking and climbing trails to conquer, golfing, fishing, mountain biking, kayaking, canoeing and fishing.

Entertainment

There's no shortage of events and festivals in the land of the maple leaf. So no matter the season, you'll find something to attend. Look out for:

  • The Celtic Colours International Festival, Nova Scotia
  • The Celebration of Light, Vancouver
  • The Calgary Stampede
  • The Edmonton Folk Music Festival
  • The Toronto International Film Festival
  • The Canadian Tulip Festival, Ottawa
  • The Quebec Winter Carnival, Quebec City

Travel to Canada Made Simple

While a tourist visa isn't the most complex visa to get for Canada, you still need to submit the correct documents timely, ensure that the evidence of your connection to your home country is submitted, and ensure you fulfill all of the Canada Visitor visa requirements. Despite how extensive the Canada visitor visa checklist is, submitting only those documents on the IRCC checklist isn't enough to make your case that you will return to your home country after your visit. To ensure you have everything you need for your trip to Canada, click the button below to speak to an RCIC and ensure everything happens smoothly.

Is Canada's Visitor Visa Currently Open?

The Canada Visitor Visa has been open for all vaccinated tourists since September 7, 2021. However, On October 1, 2022, all COVID-19 border requirements, including vaccination, use of ArriveCAN, testing and quarantine or isolation requirements, ended for all travellers entering the country.

How Can I Extend My Stay in Canada After My Visitor Visa Expires?

If you want to prolong your stay in Canada after six months, you can apply for a visitor record, giving you a new expiry date. You must apply at least 30 days before your Canadian visitor visa expires. You apply online on the Canadian government website.

What Must do if I Have COVID-19 Symptoms

You should not travel to Canada, should you have COVID-19 symptoms. If COVID-19 symptoms appear en route to Canada or as you arrive:

  • You must inform flight attendants, cruise staff or a border official as soon as you arrive
  • You'll possibly be referred to a Quarantine Officer to have your health assessed
  • Do not use public transport
  • Take a   at what COVID-19 requirements for when you test positive are for the province your province or territory you are entering.

Is a Visitor or Tourist Visa the Same as a Temporary Resident Visa?

Yes. A temporary resident visa is another name for a visitor or tourist visa. However, this is different from a Working Holiday Visa, which is predicated on you working in Canada. If this sounds like something you would be into, consider the Canadian Working Holiday visa.

Canada Visa Processing Time

The processing time varies by country and also depends on whether you need to give biometrics information or not. Because of the current situation, it is difficult to provide accurate processing times for most visa applications.

For approved visa applications:

Applicants whose visa applications are approved will get two letters in their IRCC account, a decision letter and a letter with instructions to submit their passports in order for the Canadian visa to be affixed.

Applicants who have received their Canadian visa should remember the following things:

Travelers entering Canada must abide by the testing and quarantine requirements for everyone’s safety.

Check if you’re exempted from pre-entry and arrival test requirements .

Use ArriveCAN before crossing the border or checking in at the airport to submit the following documents:

  • Travel and contact information

  • Quarantine plan

The ArriveCAN receipt, softcopy or hardcopy, must be shown to the border officer upon arrival.

  • Proof of eligibility to travel to Canada

  • Evidence provided during visa application
  • Written authorization from IRCC (if applicable)

Those who cannot provide this information will not be allowed to enter Canada at the point of entry or board their flight.

For denied visa applications:

The refusal decision will be sent to the applicant’s IRCC account and this will contain the explanation for the refusal. There is no formal process for appealing rejected or denied visa applications. Applicants are only encouraged to re-apply only if their situation has changed significantly or if there is any new and important information to submit.

Canada eTA is REQUIRED for all visa EXEMPT nationalities entering Canada for tourism or transit. If you are visa EXEMPT, you DO NOT NEED a visa but you REQUIRE an eTA to enter Canada.

Who does not need an eTA?

The following does not need an eTA to enter Canada.

  • Canadian dual citizens
  • Canadian permanent residents
  • United States passport holders

Is Canada eTA a visa?

No. Canada eTA is NOT a visa. It’s just an online authorization that you would need to obtain prior to your trip to Canada.

Can you use ESTA to enter Canada?

You CANNOT use ESTA (United States Electronic System for Travel Authorization) to enter Canada. ESTA is a travel authorization to enter the US. It cannot be used for Canada. Even if you hold a valid ESTA, you would still need to apply for eTA to travel to Canada.

Canada eTA validity

Canada eTA is valid for 5 years or until the expiry of your current passport, whichever is earlier. eTA is also linked to a specific passport, so if you get a new passport for any reason, you must apply for a new eTA.

How long can you stay in Canada with an eTA?

You can stay up to 6 months in Canada with an eTA.

How many times can you enter Canada with an eTA?

Canada eTA is multiple-entry and valid for 5 years. Once you obtain your eTA, you can travel to Canada as many times as you want within that 5 years period.

Canada eTA application process

You can apply for Canada eTA online at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

NOTE Flight tickets and hotel bookings are not required for eTA. Apply for eTA before you purchase your flight tickets or book any hotels.

Canada eTA fee is $7 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only. Since the fee is in CAD, your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.

Canada eTA processing time

Canada eTA processing takes only a few minutes. In rare cases, it can take several days if additional documentation or an interview is required. IRCC will contact you with instructions in such cases.

Canada eTA status

You can check your Canada eTA status on eTA Status Tool provided by IRCC. After your eTA is approved, you can use this tool to check the validity and print a copy if needed.

If it has been over 72 hours since you applied and there has been no status update, you can contact customer service using the IRCC Webform .

Documents to carry when entering Canada on an eTA

  • Original passport
  • Return or onward flight ticket

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Canada.

Proof of onward ticket can be printed or soft-copy on your phone. If you are traveling on a one-way ticket, get proof of an onward ticket from OnwardTicket .

NOTE A copy of your approved eTA is not required to carry. Canadian immigration officers and airline staff will have access to the Canada eTA system and they can verify your eTA using your passport number.

CANADA TOURIST VISA (TRV)

A Canada tourist visa or visitor visa is formally known as Canada Temporary Resident Visa (Canada TRV). You need a Canada TRV if you are from a visa REQUIRED nationality.

Canada tourist visas can be applied either ONLINE or by mailing a PAPER application to the consulate.

I highly recommend applying ONLINE. This guide focuses on the online application only. There are several advantages to applying online. It’s fast. It ensures everything is complete and correct. You only need to send your passport after your visa is approved.

All forms can be downloaded from your application page.

Provide all pages of your old and new passports that have stamps or visas. This will ensure you have a considerable travel history.

NOTE If you have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, your application may be processed in 2 to 5 working days under the CAN+ program.

What is CAN+ visa program?

Canada Immigration and Citizenship (CIC) has started asking applicants for visas, stamps and travel history for the last 10 years.

Applicants who have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa are considered for CAN+ expedited program. If qualified, some additional documentation is not required and the application is processed within 2-5 working days.

At the beginning of your application, you will be asked questions specific to previous travel to Canada and the United States to determine your eligibility. You will be asked to upload less documentation if you are determined as eligible.

Even though you qualify for the CAN+ expedited program, your application may take several days to process. There are many factors involved. So do not count on the CAN+ program. Instead, follow the current processing times and apply for Canada visitor visa well in advance.

Canada tourist visa fee

Canada tourist visa fee is $100 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only. Since the fee is in CAD, your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee.

Biometric procedure

Biometrics are mandatory for all Canada tourist visa applicants. Your fingerprints are scanned and your photograph is taken during the biometric appointment.

NOTE Biometrics are valid for 10 years. If you have given your biometrics in the last 10 years as part of a Canada visitor, work or study visa, you are NOT REQUIRED to give your biometrics again.

You can use the Biometric Validity Tool on the IRCC website to check if your biometrics are still valid.

If your biometrics are still valid, you do not need to pay the biometric fee and do not need to give biometrics.

The following are the steps for biometrics.

STEP 1: Pay your biometric fee

The biometric fee for Canada tourist visa is $85 CAD. The fee must be paid using a credit or debit card in CAD only.

You can pay the biometric fee when you submit your visa application or at a later time. It’s highly recommended to pay your biometric fee when you submit your visa application. Paying later will delay your biometrics and eventually your visa process.

STEP 2: Receive biometric instruction letter within 24 hours

If you have paid your biometric fee when submitting your visa application, you will receive your biometric instruction letter within 24 hours of application submission.

STEP 3: Schedule biometric appointment at your nearest VAC

After you receive your biometric instruction letter, you will have 30 days to give your biometrics. Failing to give biometrics within 30 days will result in visa refusal.

Follow the instructions in your biometric instruction letter and schedule a biometric appointment at your nearest Visa Application Center (VAC) or Application Support Center (ASC) .

Once you schedule your biometric appointment, you will receive a biometric appointment confirmation letter from VAC or ASC.

If you have temporary injuries on your fingers and/or your face, you must wait to give your biometrics. You should contact IRCC customer support to request additional time for your biometrics appointment.

If you have permanent injuries on your fingers and/or face, you can continue with your biometrics appointment. The staff at VAC can scan as many fingers as possible and take your photograph.

STEP 4: Gather documents for biometric appointment

Print your biometric instruction letter and biometric appointment confirmation. Some VACs require a consent form. If your VAC requires one, you will see instructions about it in your biometric appointment confirmation.

STEP 4: Appear in-person at the VAC on your appointment day

On your appointment day, carry the following documents

  • Biometric instruction letter
  • Biometric appointment confirmation
  • Consent form (if required)

Your fingerprints will be scanned and your photo will be taken. To avoid any issues with your fingerprint or photo, follow the below instructions.

  • Make sure your 10 fingers are free of any temporary injuries, cuts and cracks
  • Make sure your 10 fingers are free of paint, oil, grease, etc.
  • Make sure your face is free of any temporary injuries, sunglasses, hats, etc.

Why is my application not being processed in CAN+ expedited program

Even though you qualify for CAN+ expedited program, your application may take several days to process. The application process took more than 30 days for some readers with a travel history to Canada and/or hold US visas. There are many factors involved and ultimately it’s at the discretion of CIC whether to process your application quickly.

My advice is to just follow the regular processing timeline. Check the current processing times and apply well in advance.

How relevant is travel history for Canada visa?

Travel history will improve your chances of visa approval. It can also speed up the process. If you have traveled to Canada in the last 10 years or hold a valid US visa, your application may be processed quickly under CAN+ expedited program.

Types Of Visas In Canada

Types Of Visas In Canada: Explained

Embarking on the Canadian dream and need to know about the possible visa options for Canada? Fret Not! We’ve got you covered!

Whether you’re planning to scale the Rocky Mountains, immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of cities like Toronto and Montreal, or simply seek new opportunities, navigating the maze of Canadian visas is your first adventure. This guide strips away the complexity, offering you a straightforward map to the types of visas Canada rolls out the welcome mat with.

Let’s dive in!

What Is A Canada Visa?

Types Of Visas In Canada 1

A Canada visa is a stamp on your passport that allows you to enter Canada.

It is permission for you to travel to the country and legally be able to stay either temporarily or permanently.

Getting a visa to Canada means that the Canadian Consulate or Embassy in your home country decides you are eligible and fulfill the requirements for entry.

However, once you are at the Canadian border and customs, it is up to the officers at the border to evaluate whether you are fit to enter.

If you answer the Canadian Border Services Officer (BSO) questions honestly and correctly, they will allow you to enter.

Otherwise, if they suspect you are not eligible to enter, they can deny you and ask you to return to your home country even if you have a Canada visa.

Who Needs A Canadian Visa?

Types Of Visas In Canada 2

People from countries that do not have a visa exemption or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) agreement with Canada will need a visa to enter the country.

More specifically, people from around 148 countries need a visa to visit, work, or immigrate to Canada.

If you are one of these applicants and you need a visa for Canada, you must apply for one.

Depending on the type of visa you want, you will have a method of applying, but you must take a few general steps.

What Are The Canada Visa Types?

Types Of Visas In Canada 3

Before applying for a Canadian visa, you must know which visa you want to apply for. Here are the types of Canada visas:

  • Visitor visas.
  • Student visas.
  • Work visas.
  • Permanent Residence visas.
  • Business Immigrant visas.
  • Express Entry Program visas.

You must pick the one that fits why you want to go to Canada.

Temporary Canada Visas

Temporary Canada visas allow the person to stay in Canada for a specific period, as determined by the Canadian Consulate or the Border Services Officers (BSO).

This time is usually up to 6 months . However, the temporary visa can be a single-entry or multiple-entry visa.

A single entry visa allows the person to enter Canadaenter Canada only once, stay for 6 months , and then return to their home country.

A multiple entry visa allows the person to enter Canada multiple times until their visa expires and stay temporarily.

Here are the types of Canadian Temporary Visas:

  • Canada Tourist Visa : The  Visitor Visa or the Tourist visa allows the holder to enter Canada for tourism .
  • Canada Super Visa : The Canadian Super Visa allows parents or grandparents of Canadian citizens or Canadian Permanent Residents to visit their children or grandchildren for an extended stay.
  • Diplomatic And Official Visa : The Diplomatic and Official visa permits officials and diplomats from foreign countries to enter Canada for official duties and purposes.
  • Courtesy Visa: The Courtesy visa is given to all those people who do not qualify for a Diplomatic and Official Visa, but it is necessary due to their ranks and positions. This includes, for example, members of trade missions or diplomats with touristic intent.
  • Canada Business Visa: The Business Visa is given to those traveling to Canada for business purposes as individuals or as a group of business people.
  • Visa To Give Birth In Canada: This visa is given to people who fulfill all the criteria to stay temporarily in Canada, are pregnant, and want to give birth there. Giving birth in Canada automatically makes the baby a Canadian citizen.
  • Intending Organ Donors Visa : This visa is given to a person traveling to Canada to donate an organ to a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Canada Facilitation Visa .: Facilitation Visas are given to Canadian citizens with dual nationalities who do not have a Canadian passport but have a passport of another nationality. The facilitation visa is stamped on the person’s other nationality visa due to the extreme hardships of getting a Canadian passport.
  • Canada Student Visa: A Canadian student visa is given to those admitted to a Canadian university to complete their studies. If you are going to Canada to study for less than 6 months, you can only get a TRV visa, but you will need a Student Visa for more than 6 months of studies.
  • Canada Temporary Work Visa : Canada temporary work visas are given to those with a job offer in Canada and will work for up to 6 months. To get this visa, the person must present a valid job offer letter from an employer and qualify for a temporary visa.
  • Temporary Residence Permit: This permit is for people who must go to Canada for different purposes but are otherwise not admissible for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). This permit is issued only for the length of time that the person needs to be in Canada, for example, 2 weeks for a workshop.
  • Working Holiday Visa: The Canada Working Holiday Visa is given to young people from 30 countries so they can work in Canada and travel. It is a random selection visa, which means that applicants will submit their applications and wait to be randomly selected to apply for the work permit.

Permanent Canada Visas

Permanent Canada visas allow the holder to settle in the country permanently.

These are otherwise known as immigrant visas and can be of different types, as follows:

  • Immigrant Investor Program: The Immigrant Investor Program is for people who will make investments in the Canadian economy and have a net worth of at least CAD$800,000.  They must invest at least CAD$400,000 , and the Government will return this investment to them in 5 years without any interest.
  • Startup Visa Program: The Canada Startup Visa is for people who will individually contribute to the economy. They must have a net worth of at least CAD$300,000 and must commit to owning and managing at least one-third of a Canadian business. They should also create and maintain employment within 3 years of being in the country.
  • Self-employed Persons Visa: The Self-employed Persons visa is for people who have skills in business, athletics, culture, or farming and can start their own businesses. These people must demonstrate how they will finance the business and their skills in those areas.
  • Quebec-Selected Skilled Worker Program (QSWP):  If you have one of the occupations required in the Canadian province of Quebec and are fluent in French, you can apply for the Quebec Skilled Worker Program. This will allow you to move and work permanently there.
  • Family-Sponsorship Program : The Family Sponsorship Visa allows the spouses and dependent children of Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents to immigrate to Canada permanently.
  • Live-In Caregiver Program (LCP) : This visa is given to caregivers qualified to care for older people, disabled people, or children who live in private homes in Canada.

Express Entry Visas

The Canada Express Entry Program is an electronic immigration program designed by the Government of Canada.

It allows people worldwide to apply for immigration to Canada based on their specific skills. The following are part of this program:

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Federal skilled worker program (fswp), provincial nomination programs (pnp), canadian experience class.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) visa is given to people who are qualified tradespeople in occupations such as:

  • Aircraft Mechanics
  • Crane Operators
  • Heavy-duty Equipment Mechanics
  • Electricians
  • Ironworkers
  • Plumbers, etc.

The visa under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is given to people in Canada who have the required professions.

You must check what kind of occupations Canada needs when you plan to apply and obtain the necessary points.

This visa under the Provincial Nominee Program is given to semi or low-skilled workers who can contribute to the Canadian economy through work.

The workers are placed in different provinces of Canada where the demand for their work is higher.

The Canadian Experience Class permanent visa is given to those with a temporary student visa or a temporary workers visa who want to switch to permanent resident status.

They either have a Canadian education or work experience and have settled into Canadian society.

How Does Canada Visa Application Work?

Types Of Visas In Canada 4

The Canada visa application process depends mainly on the visa type you need to apply for.

To apply for a Canada visa, you need to go through these simple steps:

  • Find out if you are eligible for a Canada visa.
  • Create your online account.
  • Compile the document file.
  • Pay the fees.
  • Wait for the processing of your Canadian visa.
  • Submit your passport and processing fees .

Find Out If You Are Eligible For A Canada Visa

The Canadian Government has made finding out how to get a Canadian visa relatively easy.

They have created different tests that evaluate the eligibility of applicants by asking them to fill out an online questionnaire.

Depending on the type of visa you want, you will be asked to answer several questions, and the system will then let you know whether you can apply.

It will also send you the relevant instructions and steps you must take to fulfill all the requirements.

Navigate Through The Canadian Government Website

To access these questionnaires and determine if you are eligible for a Canada visa, you must visit their website here.

The website will show you different information and tabs to select, but you must go to the Immigration tab .

When you hover or click on the Immigration tab, it will show you a drop-down list of options. The first one will be My Application , and then there will be tabs for Visit, Immigrate, Work, Study, and others.

You must select the one that corresponds with the visa you want to apply for.

Continuing the example we showed above, if you want to get a tourist visa, you must click on the Visit tab .

You will see more information there after you click on the tab that matches the reason you want to visit Canada and the visa you want to apply for.

Whichever tab you have clicked, one of the links will say, “Find out if you can apply” or “Find out if you are eligible”. You must click on this link.

The link will take you to the questionnaire, where you must answer several questions. They will include your personal information, reasons you want to visit Canada, and your travel history.

The system will show you the results at the end of the questionnaire.

Receiving The Results

You will be able to see three different types of results, which say one of the following:

  • You are eligible for the visa you have selected.
  • You are eligible for a different type of visa that the system will match you with.
  • You are not eligible for the visa.

Suppose you are eligible for the visa you have selected or a different type of visa. In that case, the system will ask you to input your contact information (usually your email), and they will send you a set of documents.

The documents will contain a description of the visa and instructions and details about how to apply. Additionally, they will send you a reference code.

The reference code is one of the most critical pieces of information on that set of documents because you will have to use it to start your application.

Without a reference code, you will not be able to apply.

The reference code tells the system the information you gave during your questionnaire, and it will have the type of visa you are applying for.

Because of this, you must save the email and those documents.

You can write the reference code in different ways, such as sending it to yourself, writing it on your computer, or a piece of paper, but you must keep it.

If you do, you will have to start the questionnaire process again.

Create Your Online Account

The instructions by email will show you whether you must apply for a Canada visa online or in person.

Since the Canadian Government digitizes its records, most people must apply online. To do that, you must create an account.

There are two ways to create an account for the application:

  • Using your online banking login since the Canadian Government has partnered with many banks;
  • Creating a Government of Canada login (GCKey);

You can use whichever fits you better since you must use your banking details to pay the visa fees.

Compile The Document File

You can start your Canada visa application once you log in to your account. Use your reference code to apply for the visa you have been deemed eligible.

Once you enter the reference code, the system will show you a list of documents for your Canadian visa application.

You must submit all of these forms online in the system and then proceed to apply.

Pay The Fees

Once the system has verified that you have submitted all the necessary documents, you will be taken to the payment page.

You will have to pay the Canada visa fees depending on the type of visa you are applying for. When that is completed, your application will be submitted.

It will take around 5 workdays for you to see the application on your account, and if you apply in person, you will have to take those documents to the Canadian Embassy in your home country.

Wait For The Processing Of Your Canadian Visa

The Canadian Embassy will then process your Canada visa application for two or more weeks , depending on the type of visa.

Additionally, they might ask for more documents or for you to submit your biometrics and have an interview .

If they ask for your biometrics and an interview, you must visit the Embassy in person, even if you applied online.

You must make an appointment , or the Embassy will make one.

At your appointment, you must submit your photographs and fingerprint and answer questions from a Canadian Embassy official.

The official will determine whether you are fit to get a Canadian visa or not. They can inform you of their decision immediately after your appointment or notify you later.

All Embassy notifications regarding your visa will be posted on your account, so you must check it continuously, even if you did not have to submit biometrics or go through an interview.

Submit Your Passport And Processing Fees

If you receive a notification that your Canada visa application was successful, the next step is to submit your passport to the Canadian Embassy.

This can be done by mailing it to the address of the Embassy in your country, together with processing fees.

The processing fees depend on the type of visa you are applying for and will range from $20 to $50, which you must pay by check or money order.

You must also pay for a return envelope for your passport.

The Embassy officials will receive your passport and fees, stamp the visa on your passport, and mail it back to you.

If you get notified of their decision immediately after the visa interview, you will have to pay the processing fees and get the passport immediately.

If your Canada visitor visa is about to expire, and you want to stay longer, you have to apply for a visa extension. This is called a Canada Visitor Record .

Other than extending a tourist visa, you can also change your study or work permit to a Visitor Record. However, a visitor record is only available while you are inside Canada.

If you want to leave Canada and enter again, you will not be allowed entry with a visitor record.

What Happens If You Overstayed Your Canada Visa?

If you have stayed in Canada past the expiry of your visa, the next step depends on how long you have overstayed.

If you’ve overstayed for less than 90 days , you can restore your visitor status by applying for a Visitor Record and selecting “Restore my status as a visitor”.

If you’ve overstayed for longer than 90 days, you cannot apply to restore your status and have to leave Canada. You may not be able to get another Canada visa.

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

Understanding the Canada Tourist Visa

Canada-tourist-visa

A Canada tourist visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), allows individuals from foreign countries to visit Canada for leisure, tourism, or to visit family and friends.

It is a temporary authorization granted by the Canadian government, and obtaining one is crucial for travelers who are not citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

Gather the Required Documents

You will need to gather the necessary documents to support your Canada tourist visa application. These typically include:

Completed application form: Fill out the application form accurately and honestly. Any discrepancies may lead to delays or denial of your Visa.

Passport-sized photographs: Submit recent photographs that meet the specifications outlined by the Canadian government.

Proof of travel arrangements: Present confirmed return tickets, hotel reservations, and an itinerary outlining your planned activities in Canada.

Financial documents: Include bank statements, pay stubs, and other financial records to demonstrate your ability to cover the costs of your trip.

Letter of invitation (if applicable): If you have a host or sponsor in Canada, request a letter of invitation from them outlining the purpose and duration of your visit.

What is GCKey and the New IRCC Portal?

GCKey is the secure way to access the online services of the Canadian Government. In order to apply for a Canada Visa online, you have two options. The first one is to create an account on the GCKey portal and provide the details asked to file a visa application. Another way is to apply through the new IRCC portal. The Canadian government created a new IRCC Portal to make the Canada Visa application processing more efficient, smoother, and more timely.

The new IRCC portal is a web platform that is secure and visa applicants can conduct business with IRCC electronically. The New IRCC portal was created to deal with the increased traffic on the GCKey portal. To access the new IRCC Portal, you need to have an invitation code and it’s easy to get.

But if you are unable to get an invitation code then, you can simply apply through the GCKey portal as I did which is discussed in detail in this article. The visa application process is similar both ways.

Which is better: GCKey or New IRCC portal?

The visa application process is a bit different when you apply through the new IRCC portal rather than the old GCKey. In GCKey, you have to deal with filling out pdf forms and then signing them after printing them out and uploading them again. Whereas, with the new IRCC portal, all you have to do is fill out a long web form which is more convenient and fewer documents to upload.

If you have access to the new IRCC portal, then you should apply for your visa through it rather than the old GCKey Portal. Although the processing time for both is similar, the new IRCC portal is simply convenient to use. Also, for those with a USA visa or Green card, the New IRCC portal is the recommended application method. This portal offers the Can+ program for those with a USA visa, providing additional benefits.

Application Process for Canadian Tourist Visa

Step 1: determine whether you need to apply for canada tourist visa or not.

Prior to entering Canada, you need to have either a visa or an eTA, depending on your nationality. That’s why it is important to check out the name of your country in the list of countries whose citizens need to obtain either a visa or eTA which is a quicker version of a Visa to enter Canada.

List Of Countries Which Need Visa or eTA to Enter Canada

The travellers visiting Canada can be categorised into three lists according to their eligibility for visa exemption (eTA required), Visa-required travellers and eTA exemption.

There are about 148 nationalities whose citizens have to acquire a visa to enter Canada. The majority of the travellers fall in the category of nations whose people need to go through the entire process of applying for a visa according to their reason for the visit like for visiting, working, studying, etc.

List Of Countries Which Need eTA to Enter Canada

There are some countries that have good relations with Canada and hence, their citizens do not need to apply for a Sticker visa to visit Canada. However, they need to get an Electronic Travel Authorization, also known as eTA , a travel document admissible to Canada for visa-free entry.

An eTA allows you to spend up to 6 months in Canada. It is essentially a quicker version of a visa which doesn’t need you to submit as many documents as you would for a visa application. An eTA is best for travellers who qualify for it but you cannot work, study, claim health benefits or stay permanently in Canada with an eTA. You will need to get a visa for long-term stays.

Here is the list of the countries whose citizens need to acquire eTA to enter Canada for the short term:

Note: if you are not going to enter Canada via air, you need to check with the Canadian Consulate first whether you need a visa or an eTA because Canada has different rules based on your means of travel and nationality.

Step 2: Determine the Types of Canada Visa You need to apply for

There are also various types of Canadian visas you can apply for but mainly they are study visas for students, work visas, and temporary visas for a short-term stay of a maximum of six months. There is also the permanent visa which essentially provides you with a permanent residency in Canada in case you are planning to immigrate, work for many years and many other such reasons.

Since we are talking about tourist visas here, the focus of this article is going to be on Canada Tourist visas which fall under the Temporary Residence Visa, specifically Canada Visitor Visa.

With a temporary residence visa, you can stay in Canada for up to 6 months but this time is specified by the Border Services Officers (BSO) or the Canadian Consulate. It can be a single-entry visa or multiple entries which allows multiple enter Canada numerous enter before the expiration date of your Canada tourist visa.

Step 3: Create Your Online Account on GCKey Portal

Canada Tourist Visa

The next step is to create a GCKey account to actually start filling out the Canada tourist visa application. You can find GCKey on the official webpage of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) under the category of ‘Visit Canada’.

1. First, you will need a username with characters between 8 to 16 and a unique password for the sign-up process. At the final step, you will need to create recovery questions with answers and hints.

You must remember these details because they will be asked later in the application process for security purposes. You will also have to accept the terms and conditions here.

2. After logging in, you will need to fill out details like your name and last name (same as in your passport), email and your language preference. Click continue after going through the details you fill out once again to make sure they are correct.

3. After you click on continue, another page will open. On this page, you will find three main headings which are about the status of your submitted application, continuing to fill out a previous application and lastly, starting a new application.

The part you need to see is the last one- Start an application. Below this heading, you will find the option that says ‘Apply to come to Canada’ and click on it to proceed.

4. Now, another page will open that will ask if you have a personal reference code or not. In case you don’t have one, look for the ‘Visitors visa, study and/or work permit’ under the heading that says ‘I do not have a personal reference code’.

5. On the next page, you will have another set of questions that will determine your eligibility for obtaining a Canada Visa.

Step 4: Check Out Your Eligibility for Canada Tourist Visa Before Starting the Visa Application

Eligibility for Canada Tourist Visa

Now you have to check your eligibility to be qualified to travel to Canada. This step is really simple. All you need to do is fill out all the tests that will be asked after the previous step which will evaluate your application’s eligibility.

These tests are simple online questionnaires and the type of questions that would be asked are:

  • Firstly, you will be asked about what you would do in Canada. As a tourist, you have to select ‘visit’.
  • Secondly, you will be asked about the duration of your stay. Here, you have to select the time you are planning to spend in Canada.
  • Next, you have to select the code that matches your passport.
  • Next, you will be asked about your current country/territory of residence.
  • Next comes whether you have a family member who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and whether they are 18+ years or not. Depending on your answer, you will ask for relevant information.
  • The next question is about your date of birth.
  • You will be asked if you have ever lived in Canada as a PR or landed immigrant.
  • The next question is about whether you are a lawful permanent resident of the United States or not. You have to have a valid U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) number for this. If you fill yes here, you will need to provide relevant information too.
  • Next is about your marital status.
  • Finally, you will be asked about your province of destination. In case you plan to visit more than one province, you can select the one where you are going to spend the majority of your time.

When finished, you will be given the option to review and edit your answers. Make sure you check out the information you filled in is correct because incorrect information can lead to the rejection of your Canada tourist visa application.

When done, you will receive a message which will verify your eligibility, and which visa you need to apply for. It will further provide you with relevant information and instructions to fulfil all the Canada Tourist visa application requirements.

Step 5: Submit Documents Required for Canada Tourist Visa Application

While applying for a Canada Tourist Visa, you will need to compile and submit some necessary documents while filling out your visa application. There are many documents which you can submit along with your application, but some are optional.

To increase your chances of being approved for a Canadian visa, it is recommended that you submit the required documents as outlined in the application. Providing all necessary documentation will help ensure that your application is complete and meets the requirements for approval.

Visitor Visa Application (IMM 5257): First, you have to fill out the IMM 5257 application form which can easily be downloaded from their official website. You can fill it in on your device using Adobe Reader. For your signature on the application, you have to print it out and then sign it with a pen. Make sure the details you fill in this form are the same as previously mentioned and recheck it for any mistakes. Click on ‘Validate’ at the bottom when done.

As soon as you click on it, your application will be checked and validated. When it is validated, a unique barcode will be generated that will be scanned by officials during your application’s review. After that, all you need to do is save your application and then upload it to the website. Do note that you have use latest adobe acrobat reader .

Identity Proof Document (required): You need to have a valid Passport which can either be a regular passport or an official or diplomatic document, that can prove your identity. Family information (required) : You have to submit a completed IMM 5645 form with your visa application. If the applicant is minor, then you need to obtain a letter of authorization for the minor to travel to Canada. Other documents like custody decree or adoption paper and such might also be required depending on whether they will be travelling alone or accompanied by a parent.

Proof of Your ties to Country of Residence: When applying for a visa or entry into a foreign country, you must prove that you have ties to your country of residence and intend to return after your visit. This can include documents such as your own property, rental agreements, mortgages, job offers, financial assets like stocks and bonds, or bank accounts and also good travel history etc.

These documents can help convince immigration officers that you have a strong connection to your home country and are not likely to overstay your visa or attempt to immigrate illegally.

Canada visa photograph (required): You need to provide a photo of yourself which meets the photograph requirements of the Canada temporary visa application. Your photo should be clear, printed on good quality photographic paper with clear light-coloured or simply a white background, and taken within the last 6 months.

Purpose Of Visit/ Itinerary (optional): You can provide your itinerary with your Canada tourist visa application to show how long you plan on staying in the country and what you plan on doing here. You can include documents like your flight details, registration for an event or hotel reservations and such. Here is a sample itinerary which i provided during my application.

Travel history (optional): As part of the visa application process, it is required to provide a detailed travel history for the past ten years. This includes a clear copy of any previous passports or visas that were used during that time period. It is crucial to accurately document all travel to ensure a smooth and successful visa application process.

Cover Letter (optional): While a cover letter is not always required, it can be valuable in explaining your reasons for wanting to visit Canada and why you should be granted entry permission. A well-crafted cover letter can provide additional context and information that may not be included in other application materials and help make a strong case for why you are a deserving candidate for entry into the country. Here is my sample cover letter .

Use of a representative (required if applicable): if you have family or a friend who can sponsor your visit to Canada then you can also include it with your application. For this, you have to fill out the IMM 5476 form.

However, do keep in mind that these requirements can vary depending on your situation and you can be asked for additional documents which might not be mentioned above. Also, you cannot obtain a Temporary Visa after you arrive in Canada. Lastly, submitting all the above-mentioned required documents doesn’t guarantee that you will receive a visa.

Step 6: Pay the Canada tourist visa fees

After you are done with submitting the required documents, you will be redirected to the next page. Here you will find details regarding the documents you have submitted and the amount of fee you have to pay.

How Much Is the Canada Tourist Visa Fees?

While applying for a Canada Tourist Visa, you will have to pay the following amounts:

  • Canada tourist visa application- CAD 100
  • Biometric fee- CAD 85

Keep in mind that these amounts are liable to change and during the visa application process, you will also need to pay for postal service to submit your passport and it can cost you another CAD 90, depending upon the shipping label of your purchase.

Before making the payment, you will be first asked to agree to the terms and conditions along with providing your signature that consists of both your first and last name and answering the security question.

After you have provided the above-mentioned things, you will be redirected to the payment page where you can select your preferred method of payment. The confirmation of payment will be sent via email and you can check the status of your application back on the official website by clicking on ’full application status’. Make sure you regularly check for any emails from the Embassy.

While navigating the page of your application status, you will find clickable links under the heading of ‘Message about your application’ at the bottom of the page. This is where you will be receiving the notification on the status of your visa application.

Step 7: Schedule Your Biometrics Appointment

Biometrict instruction letter

The next important step of the Canada tourist visa application process is to schedule your biometrics appointment. To acquire a Canada Tourist Visa, you are asked to provide your biometric information which is collected by the Canadian Embassy.

After receiving your payment submission confirmation, you will be notified within 2-5 days. Your biometrics instruction letter will include your IRCC number and when you receive this, you can schedule your appointment anytime within 30 days at any Visa Centre nearest to your place of residence such as VFS Global.

On the day of your biometrics appointment, make sure to bring your Biometrics Instruction letter. The barcode on this letter will be scanned and then your biometric information like your fingerprints, digital photos, etc will be collected.

Later you will receive a notification on confirmation of the Embassy receiving your biometrics, known as the Correspondence Letter.

Step 8: Submit Your Passport

Depending on your location, you will receive a notification of an ‘Original Passport Request’ in which you will be asked to submit your original Passport if your visa application has been approved. You can expect to receive this notification somewhere between 5 to 10 days after getting your correspondence letter and for this, you will need to submit your passport for your new visa within the next 30 days.

You can submit your passport via mail with the proper correct shipping labels. You can obtain a correct shipping label from VFS and not anywhere else because the shipping label you need here is very specific. For this, you have to email VFS requesting a shipping label.

Next, you will receive an Excel template to fill out and then within 3 business days, VFS will send you an invoice. You will need to make payment for your shipping label which would be approximately $90 but it may change.

You should be able to receive your shipping label within 15 days after which you can attach it to your parcel containing your passport and mail it to the same address as the Embassy or Visa Application Centre where you had your biometric appointment.

Make sure that your passport is in good condition and has at least 1 visa page empty. Also, your passport must not be close to its expiration date.

Step 9: Claim your Canada Visa results

After you mail your passport, your part of the Canada Tourist Visa application process is finished. Now you have to wait for the return of your passport with your visa so that you can begin your journey to the land of maple leaf!

How long is the application examination period for Canada Tourist Visa?

It usually takes 1 to 3 months to get a Canada Tourist Visa. This Canada tourist visa processing time starts when your Canada tourist visa application reaches the visa office and ends when your visa application is approved.

The application examination period varies for everyone due to many reasons such as sudden high demand for tourist visas or changes in visa policies. Incorrect documents or unavailability of biometric appointment slots can also further delay this process.

I highly recommend regularly checking your emails for an update and checking your notifications on the official IRCC website too. This will save you precious time and you can get the necessary information and instruction for your visa applications too!

In Conclusion, Canada is an amazing country where not only will you find wonderful views of nature but you will be welcomed by wonderful people too. Going Hiking and camping with friends and family over Canadian mountain ranges is an experience that one must have. Not just nature but the cities of Canada are not to be missed. That’s why I think you should come and visit this incredible country at least once.

For this purpose, you most likely would require to obtain a tourist visa unless your country falls on the list of visa-exempt countries of Canada. The Canada tourist visa application process seems daunting at first but it is actually very simple.

All you need to do is make sure that your information and documents are correct, and verified and that you keep up regularly with the emails from the Embassy and notifications. This way your application process will run smoothly and you have a higher chance of getting approval for a visa!

Is it true that the visa processing time in the IRCC portal is 14 to 30 days as written on the Canadian website and is it independent of the nationality of the applicant? I want to apply for a Canadian visa to participate in a congress, and I am Iranian. In the IRCC secure, the processing time is 99 days. Now, if I apply with the IRCC portal, will the answer to my visa come sooner?

' src=

Visa processing times can vary depending on various factors, including the applicant’s nationality. While the Canadian website states a general processing time of 14 to 30 days, it is important to note that this timeline is not necessarily independent of the applicant’s nationality.

In your case, as an Iranian applicant, you mentioned that the processing time indicated on the IRCC portal is 99 days. To ensure a timely response for your visa application, I recommend reaching out directly to the embassy or contacting the IRCC for any urgent processing requests.

Considering your participation in a congress, it would be advisable to contact the embassy or IRCC via phone or email to explain your situation and discuss the possibility of expediting the processing of your visa application. They will have the necessary information and expertise to assist you with any urgent matters.

I hope this information helps, and I wish you success with your visa application and participation in the congress.

Best regards.

I have tried visitor visa for my father back in 2021, it was rejected by saying there is no tie bond back in Sri Lanka to return to home country, that time I didn’t show them any financial document of his or assets, as he is a widow there is no family tie to return back to country. which is the reason it was rejected.

This time I am planning to apply again, with some enough financial document of mine in Canada and his in Sri Lanka with his single property house.

do you think is that sufficient to get a visitor visa for him? also I am inviting him for my son’s birthday which i believe as an additional advantage.

what’s your suggestion, this time i definitely want to take him to Canada to spend some quality time with me.

@Yathu, I noticed that you didn’t mention your status in Canada. May I inquire whether you are a citizen or a permanent resident? Assuming the latter and your father is living alone in Sri Lanka, it might raise concerns that you didn’t provide any financial documents to support his case in 2021. I would recommend seeking professional advice from someone in Canada. Additionally, have you considered applying for a Super visa instead of a visitor visa? Which I think have better chances to get. Thank you and please feel free to ask if you need any further assistance.

Please I have a log in details earlier because I have tried applying for a visitors visa but my application was refused and I was asked to apply again but now I can’t log in

If you have forgotten your ID and password, you can try to recover them by using the recovery option or selecting the “forget password” option.

Very straight to the point. Thank you very much. Please I have a visitor visa, but I want to apply for my child who is 3 years old. Should I log into my gckey and begin his own application using my email or do I need to create a new gckey and new email for him? Before I can commence his application?

Just use your old GCkey account and your own email.

Introduction

Canada is a beautiful country with a rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, making it a popular destination for travelers from all around the world. If you’re planning to visit Canada for tourism purposes, you may need to apply for a tourist visa, also known as a visitor visa. This visa allows you to explore the wonders of Canada, from the spectacular Rocky Mountains to vibrant cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

Applying for a tourist visa to Canada may seem like a daunting process, but with the right information and preparation, it can be a smooth and straightforward experience. This article will guide you through the step-by-step process of applying for a tourist visa to Canada, ensuring that you have all the necessary documents and information to make a successful application.

It’s important to note that the requirements and procedures for obtaining a tourist visa may vary based on your country of residence, so it’s essential to consult the official website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or contact the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date and accurate information.

Whether you’re planning a short holiday or an extended stay, obtaining a tourist visa will allow you to make the most of your time in Canada, exploring its multicultural cities, immersing yourself in its natural beauty, and experiencing its vibrant cultural scene. So, let’s dive into the process of applying for a tourist visa to Canada and get you one step closer to your Canadian adventure!

Step 1: Determine if you need a tourist visa

The first step in applying for a tourist visa to Canada is to determine if you actually need one. Canada has a list of countries whose citizens are exempt from obtaining a visitor visa for short-term visits. These countries are part of the Visa-exempt Countries list.

If you are a citizen of one of these countries, you can simply travel to Canada with your valid passport and meet the necessary entry requirements, such as having a return ticket and sufficient funds to support your stay. However, it’s important to note that even if you are visa-exempt, you may still need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if you are traveling to Canada by air. The eTA is a digital document that grants you permission to board a flight to Canada and is linked to your passport.

On the other hand, if you are not a citizen of a visa-exempt country, you will need to apply for a tourist visa before you can enter Canada. This applies to citizens of countries such as China, India, Russia, and Brazil, among others.

To determine if you need a tourist visa, you can visit the official website of IRCC and use their “Come to Canada” tool . This tool allows you to enter your country of citizenship, the purpose of your visit, and the expected duration of your stay to determine the requirements and whether a visa is needed.

It’s important to start this process well in advance of your planned travel dates as obtaining a visa may take time. Remember that requirements can change, so it’s crucial to consult the official IRCC website or contact the Canadian embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date information regarding visa requirements.

Once you have determined whether you need a tourist visa, you can move on to the next step of the application process.

Step 2: Gather the necessary documents

Before you can start the application process for a tourist visa to Canada, you will need to gather the necessary documents required by the Canadian government. Having all the required documents prepared in advance will help streamline the application process and increase your chances of a successful visa application.

The specific documents you will need may vary depending on your individual circumstances and the Canadian visa office responsible for processing your application. However, some common documents that are typically required for a tourist visa application include:

  • Valid passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from Canada. Ensure that your passport has enough blank pages for the visa and any necessary entry and exit stamps.
  • Completed application form: You will need to fill out the appropriate visitor visa application form, which can be found on the official website of IRCC. The form must be completed accurately and signed.
  • Passport-sized photographs: You will need to submit recent passport-sized photographs that meet the specifications outlined by IRCC. Make sure to follow the guidelines regarding size, background color, and other requirements.
  • Proof of travel arrangements: It is important to provide evidence of your travel plans, including a detailed itinerary, flight bookings, and accommodation reservations. This will demonstrate your intention to visit Canada for tourism purposes and provide an overview of your planned activities while in the country.
  • Proof of financial support: You will need to prove that you have enough funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Canada. This can be demonstrated through bank statements, employment letters, or any other document that shows your financial stability.
  • Proof of ties to your home country: To satisfy the visa officer that you have reasons to return to your home country after your visit to Canada, you should provide evidence of your ties, such as employment letters, property ownership, family obligations, or educational commitments.
  • Additional supporting documents: Depending on your situation, you may need to submit additional supporting documents, such as a letter of invitation from a Canadian host, travel medical insurance, or a letter explaining the purpose of your visit.

Remember to always check the official IRCC website or consult the Canadian embassy or consulate in your country for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding the required documents for a tourist visa application. It’s crucial to ensure that all documents are valid, complete, and meet the specified requirements to avoid any delays or rejections.

Once you have gathered all the necessary documents, you can proceed to the next step of the application process.

Step 3: Complete the application form

Completing the application form is a crucial step in the process of applying for a tourist visa to Canada. The application form collects important information about you, your travel plans, and your background, which will be used by the Canadian visa office to assess your eligibility for a visitor visa.

To begin the application process, you will need to download and fill out the appropriate visitor visa application form. The form is available on the official website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Take the time to carefully read the instructions and provide accurate and complete information. Any errors or omissions in your application may result in delays or even a rejection.

Some key details you will need to provide in your application form include:

  • Your personal information, such as your full name, date of birth, and contact details.
  • Information about your travel plans and intended duration of stay in Canada.
  • Your employment history and current job status.
  • Details about your financial situation, including your income, assets, and any financial support you will receive during your stay in Canada.
  • Questions about your criminal history and any previous immigration issues.
  • Additional information related to your ties and connections to your home country.

Ensure that you answer all questions truthfully and accurately. If a question does not apply to you, you can indicate “N/A” or “Not Applicable” instead of leaving it blank. Be thorough when providing explanations or additional information, as this can help the visa officer understand your circumstances better.

Once you have completed the application form, review it carefully to check for any errors or inconsistencies. You may also want to seek assistance from an immigration professional or consultant to ensure that your application is accurate and well-prepared.

After reviewing your application form, gather all the required supporting documents and attach them to your application. Make sure to follow the instructions provided by IRCC regarding how to organize and submit your documents.

Once your application form and supporting documents are prepared, it’s time to move on to the next step of the application process: paying the application fees.

Step 4: Pay the application fees

As part of the process of applying for a tourist visa to Canada, you will need to pay the required application fees. These fees help cover the cost of processing your application and are non-refundable, even if your application is rejected.

The specific application fees and payment methods may vary depending on your country of residence and the visa office responsible for processing your application. It’s important to consult the official website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or the Canadian embassy or consulate in your country to determine the exact fees applicable to your situation.

In most cases, the application fees for a tourist visa to Canada are paid online. You will need a valid credit or debit card to make the payment. The online payment system will guide you through the process, and you will receive a confirmation of payment once it is successfully processed.

It’s essential to ensure that you pay the correct fees and submit proof of payment along with your application. Failure to pay the correct fees or provide proof of payment can result in delays or rejection of your application.

If you are applying through the visa application center (VAC) in your country, there may be additional service charges or fees associated with their services. These fees are separate from the application fees and are paid directly to the VAC.

Remember to keep a copy of the payment receipt for your records, as you may need to reference it throughout the application process. It’s also a good idea to check the payment processing time to ensure that your application is not delayed due to incomplete or delayed payment.

Once you have paid the application fees, you can move on to the next step of the application process: submitting your application.

Step 5: Submit your application

After completing the necessary forms, gathering the required documents, and paying the application fees, it’s time to submit your tourist visa application to the designated visa office. The submission process may vary depending on the country you are applying from and the specific instructions provided by the visa office or visa application center (VAC).

One option for submitting your application is by mail. If you choose this method, make sure to carefully package all your documents and mail them to the appropriate address. It’s advisable to use a reliable courier service and keep a copy of the mailing receipt for tracking purposes. Remember to include all required forms, supporting documents, and payment receipts in your application package.

Another option for submission is online through the IRCC’s online application portal. This method allows you to upload your documents electronically and submit your application online. The online portal will guide you through the process and ensure that you include all the required information. This method is convenient and often faster than traditional mail submission.

If you are applying through a visa application center (VAC), you may need to schedule an appointment to submit your application in person. The VAC will review your documents, ensure they are complete, and submit them on your behalf to the relevant visa office. They may also collect biometrics, such as fingerprints and photographs, as part of the application process.

Regardless of the submission method, it’s crucial to follow all instructions provided by the visa office or VAC and double-check that you have included all the required documents. Any missing or incomplete information can result in processing delays or rejection of your application.

Keep in mind that the processing time for a tourist visa to Canada can vary depending on various factors, such as the volume of applications and the complexity of your case. It’s advisable to submit your application well in advance of your planned travel dates to allow sufficient time for processing.

Once your application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation of receipt. This confirmation will include a unique application number that you can use to track the status of your application online.

Now that you have successfully submitted your application, it’s time to move on to the next step: attending a visa interview (if required).

Step 6: Attend a visa interview (if required)

In some cases, as part of the tourist visa application process, you may be required to attend a visa interview at the Canadian embassy or consulate in your country. The purpose of the interview is to assess your eligibility and gather additional information about your travel plans.

Not all applicants are selected for a visa interview. The decision to schedule an interview is at the discretion of the visa office based on factors such as the complexity of the case, the applicant’s nationality, and the purpose of the visit. If you are required to attend an interview, you will receive a notification from the visa office or visa application center (VAC) indicating the date, time, and location of the interview.

It’s important to be well-prepared for the visa interview to maximize your chances of a successful outcome. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Review your application: Familiarize yourself with the details of your application and be prepared to answer any questions the visa officer may have.
  • Research Canada and your travel plans: Gain knowledge about Canada, its culture, and the places you plan to visit. It demonstrates your genuine interest and intention to explore the country.
  • Practice answering potential questions: Anticipate questions about your travel plans, accommodation, financial stability, ties to your home country, and the purpose of your visit. Prepare concise and honest answers.
  • Bring supporting documents: Carry all the necessary documents related to your application, such as your passport, application forms, supporting documents, and proof of payment.
  • Dress appropriately: Dress in a professional and presentable manner, as your appearance may create an impression during the interview process.
  • Be punctual and courteous: Arrive early for your interview and be polite to the visa officer and staff. Respectful behavior can leave a positive impression.
  • Stay calm and confident: Maintain a calm and composed demeanor during the interview. Speak clearly and confidently, and answer questions truthfully.

During the interview, the visa officer may ask you questions to assess the validity of your application and your intentions in visiting Canada. Provide concise and accurate answers, keeping in mind the purpose of your visit as a tourist. Be honest and forthcoming with any additional information that may support your application.

After the interview, the visa officer will make a decision on your application. If approved, you will receive your tourist visa, either in your passport or as a separate document. If your application is rejected, you will be informed of the reasons for the refusal.

Remember that the visa interview is an important step in the process, and proper preparation can greatly enhance your chances of a positive outcome.

Once the visa interview is completed, you can move on to the next step: tracking the status of your application.

Step 7: Track your application status

After you have submitted your tourist visa application and attended a visa interview (if required), you may be eager to know the status of your application. Thankfully, you can track the progress of your application online through the official website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

The online application tracking system allows you to monitor the status of your application, from the initial submission to the final decision. To access this service, you will need your unique application number and some personal identification information like your date of birth and passport details.

Once logged into the tracking system, you will be able to see updates regarding the processing of your application, such as when it is received, if additional documents are requested, and when a decision has been reached. In some cases, the system may provide estimated processing times based on the type of application and your country of residence. However, note that processing times are subject to change and may vary for each individual case.

It’s important to keep in mind that the visa processing time can vary depending on factors like the volume of applications and the complexity of your case. Patience is key during this stage, as it may take several weeks or even months for a decision to be made.

If you have any concerns or questions about your application, it’s advisable to contact the Canadian visa office or visa application center (VAC) in your country. They can provide you with more specific information about your application status and address any queries you may have.

While waiting for a decision on your application, it’s important to avoid making any irreversible travel arrangements, such as booking flights or accommodations, until your tourist visa has been approved and issued. This prevents any potential financial loss in the event of a visa refusal.

Once a decision has been made on your application, you will be notified either by mail or email. If your application is approved, you will receive your tourist visa, which may be either a visa label in your passport or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). If your application is refused, you will be provided with the reasons for the refusal.

By tracking the status of your application, you can stay informed about its progress and be prepared for the next step: receiving your visa decision.

Step 8: Receive your visa decision

After patiently waiting for the processing of your tourist visa application, you will eventually receive a decision regarding your visa. The final step is to find out whether your application has been approved or rejected.

If your application is approved, you will receive your tourist visa either as a visa label in your passport or as an electronic travel authorization (eTA) if you are exempt from visa labeling. In either case, this means you have been granted permission to enter Canada as a tourist for the specified duration.

If your application is rejected, you will receive a notification explaining the reasons for the refusal. It may be due to insufficient supporting documents, incomplete or incorrect information, or failure to meet specific eligibility criteria. Understanding the reasons for refusal can help you address any shortcomings and reapply in the future with a stronger application.

Upon receiving your visa decision, it’s important to review the details carefully to ensure accuracy. Check the validity dates, entry requirements, and any specific conditions mentioned on your visa. It’s crucial to adhere to the terms and conditions of your visa to avoid any potential immigration issues or complications during your visit to Canada.

If your application is approved, you can start making travel arrangements, including booking flights, accommodations, and planning your itinerary. Ensure that you have adequate travel insurance to cover any unexpected situations that may arise during your trip.

If your application is rejected, you have the option to reapply. However, it’s essential to address the issues that led to the refusal in your new application to increase your chances of success. Consider seeking advice from an immigration professional or consultant to assess your application and provide guidance.

Remember that receiving a tourist visa to Canada is a privilege, and it’s important to respect the terms and conditions of your visa. Ensure that you comply with the duration of stay granted and abide by Canadian laws and regulations while you are in the country.

By following the steps outlined in this guide, you have taken the necessary steps to apply for a tourist visa to Canada. Whether your application is approved or not, the experience of applying for a visa provides valuable insights and enhances your understanding of the process.

Intinerary and "person/institutions I will visit in Canada"

Hello all... The online application is asking for a flight/hotel itinerary, yet I've heard its a bad idea to book flights and accommodation before your visa is approved. I've found sites that offer temporary booking for this very situation, but as visa processing can take weeks or even more, there is a risk that the booking will expire while the visa is being processed. If this happens, how big of an impact will this have on the application? Also, I have read accounts of people on this forum who applied without an itinerary at all. How advisable is this? Additionally, there is a required field in the application form: "Name, address and relationship of any person or institution I will visit" How do I fill this when I am not visiting any person or institution? I'm just coming to explore as a tourist. Should I write the name of the hotel in the temporary itinerary? On the subject of the form, my apartment name is too long to fill in the "Apt/Unit" field, and the same is true for the "Street no." I've just written my complete address in the "Street name" field, including flat number and apartment complex name. Is this okay?

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (visa category B-1), for tourism (visa category B-2), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2).

Here are some examples of activities permitted with a visitor visa:

Business (B-1)

  • Consult with business associates
  • Attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
  • Settle an estate
  • Negotiate a contract

Tourism (B-2)

  • Vacation (holiday)
  • Visit with friends or relatives
  • Medical treatment
  • Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
  • Participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
  • Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted On Visitor Visas

These are some examples of activities that require different categories of visas and cannot be done while on a visitor visa:

  • Paid performances, or any professional performance before a paying audience
  • Arrival as a crewmember on a ship or aircraft
  • Work as foreign press, in radio, film, print journalism, or other information media
  • Permanent residence in the United States

Visitor visas will also not be issued for birth tourism (travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for their child).

Schedule an Interview

Interviews are generally required for visa applicants with certain limited exceptions below. Consular officers may require an interview of any visa applicant.

You should schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  in the country where you live. You may schedule your interview at another U.S. Embassy or Consulate, but be aware that it may be more difficult to qualify for a visa outside of the country where you live.

Wait times for interview appointments vary by location, season, and visa category, so you should apply for your visa early. Review the interview wait time for the location where you will apply:

Appointment Wait Time

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note: Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Select a U.S. Embassy or Consulate:

Prepare for your interview.

  • Fees - Pay the non-refundable visa application fee , if you are required to pay it before your interview. If your visa is approved, you may also need to pay a visa issuance fee, if applicable to your nationality. Fee information is provided below:

Select your nationality to see Issuance Fee

  • Review the instructions available on the website of the  U.S. Embassy or Consulate  where you will apply to learn more about fee payment.

Gather Required Documentation

Gather and prepare the following required documents before your visa interview:

  • Passport valid for travel to the United States – Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States (unless exempt by country-specific agreements ). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family members listed in your passport.
  • Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page.
  • Application fee payment receipt, if you are required to pay before your interview.
  • Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Additional Documentation May Be Required

Review the instructions for how to apply for a visa on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply. Additional documents may be requested to establish if you are qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of:

  • The purpose of your trip,
  • Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or
  • Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.

Evidence of your employment and/or your family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country. If you cannot cover all the costs for your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all costs for your trip.

Note:  Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant's residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa.

Attend Your Visa Interview

A consular officer will interview you to determine whether you are qualified to receive a visitor visa. You must establish that you meet the requirements under U.S. law to receive a visa.   Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans are taken as part of the application process. They are usually taken during your interview, but this varies based on location.

After your visa interview, the consular officer may determine that your application requires further  administrative processing .  The consular officer will inform you if this required.

After the visa is approved, you may need to pay a visa issuance fee (if applicable to your nationality), and make arrangements for the return of the passport and visa to you.  Review the  visa processing times  to learn more.

Entering the United States

A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. If you are allowed to enter the United States, the CBP official will provide an admission stamp or a paper Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record. Learn more about admissions and entry requirements, restrictions about bringing food, agricultural products, and other restricted/prohibited goods, and more by reviewing the CBP website .

Extending Your Stay

See  Extend Your Stay  on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to learn about requesting to extend your stay beyond the date indicated on your admission stamp or paper Form I-94.

Failure to depart the United States on time will result in being  out of status . Under U.S. law, visas of individuals who are out of status are automatically voided ( Section 222(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act ).  Any multiple entry visa that was voided due to being out of status will not be valid for future entries into the United States.

Failure to depart the United States on time may also result in you being ineligible for visas in the future. Review  Visa Denials  and  Ineligibilities and Waivers: Laws  to learn more.

Change of Status

If your plans change while in the United States (for example, you marry a U.S. citizen or receive an offer of employment), you may be able to request a change in your nonimmigrant status to another category through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). See  Change My Nonimmigrant Status  on the USCIS website to learn more.

While you are in the United States, receiving a change of status from USCIS does not require you to apply for a new visa.  However, once you depart the United States you must apply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the appropriate category for your travel.

Additional Information

  • An individual on a visitor visa (B1/B2) is not permitted to accept employment or work in the United States.
  • There is no guarantee you will be issued a visa. Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa.
  • A valid U.S. visa in an expired passport is still valid. Unless canceled or revoked, a visa is valid until its expiration date. If you have a valid visa in your expired passport, do not remove it from your expired passport. You may use your valid visa in your expired passport along with a new valid passport for travel and admission to the United States.

Travel for Medical Treatment

If you are seeking medical treatment in the United States, the consular officer may ask for further documents at your visa interview, which may include:

  • Medical diagnosis from a local physician, explaining the nature of the ailment and the reason you need treatment in the United States.
  • Letter from a physician or medical facility in the United States, stating they are willing to treat your specific ailment and detailing the projected length and cost of treatment (including doctors’ fees, hospitalization fees, and all medical-related expenses).
  • Proof that your transportation, medical, and living expenses in the United States will be paid. This may be in the form of bank or other statements of income/savings or certified copies of income tax returns (either yours or the person or organization paying for your treatment).

Visitor Visas for Personal or Domestic Employees (B-1)

You may apply for a B-1 visitor visa to work in the United States as a personal or domestic employee for your employer in limited situations. You may work in the United States on a visitor visa if your employer is:

  • A U.S. citizen who has a permanent home or is stationed in a foreign country, but is visiting or is assigned to the United States temporarily; or
  • A foreign citizen who is in the United States on one of the following nonimmigrant visa categories:  B, E, F, H, I, J, L, M, O, P, or Q.

Learn more about your rights in the United States and protection available to you by reading the Legal Rights and Protections pamphlet.

Visa Renewal

Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your visa, you will use the same application process (please review How to Apply , above). Some applicants seeking to renew their visas in certain visa classes may be eligible for the Interview Waiver (IW) which allows qualified individuals to apply for visa renewals without being interviewed in person by a U.S. consular officer. Review the instructions on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply to determine if the IW is available and if you qualify.

Do I need a visa if I have an ABTC?

Yes, you will still need a visa to travel to the United States, unless you qualify for the  Visa Waiver Program . Having an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC) does not change visa requirements, your visa status, or the visa process for travel to the United States.

How can I use my ABTC when I apply for my visa?

If you have an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC),  you might be able to schedule an expedited visa interview appointment. Review the instructions for scheduling expedited appointments on the website of the  embassy or consulate  where you will apply.

Visa Annotations for Certain Maritime Industry Workers

Certain foreign maritime workers are eligible to apply for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) once in the U.S. If you, as a maritime industry worker, will perform services in secure port areas, your visa must be annotated “TWIC Letter Received.” Workers whose visas are not annotated will not be permitted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to apply for a TWIC.

In order for your visa to be annotated, you must obtain a letter from your employer explaining the need for a TWIC and that you are a potential TWIC applicant. See a template example of this letter. You must present this letter when you apply for the B-1 visa. You must meet all other eligibility requirements for a B-1 visa.

Complete information about the TWIC program is available on TSA’s website at  https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic .

Citizens of China

In accordance with the agreement signed between the United States and China to extend visa validity, beginning on November 29, 2016, Chinese citizens with 10-year B1, B2 or B1/B2 visas in Peoples’ Republic of China passports will be required to update their biographical and other information from their visa application via a website every two years, or upon getting a new passport or B1, B2, or B1/B2 visa, whichever occurs first.  This mechanism is called EVUS - Electronic Visa Update System.

The EVUS website is now open to the public for enrollments at www.EVUS.gov .  CBP will not collect a fee for EVUS enrollment at this time. CBP anticipates the eventual implementation of an EVUS enrollment fee, but does not have a time frame. Until the implementation of a fee, travelers can enroll in EVUS without charge.  The Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will keep visa holders informed of new information throughout the year. For further information, please visit  www.cbp.gov/EVUS .‎
