15 Best Places to Visit in Cape Verde

The archipelago of Cape Verde straddles the continent of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. The country is more westernised than the rest of the African continent and facilities for travellers are, by and large, better. With that being said though, the country still feels like an African destination. The fantastic music and the bustling markets in every city are clear signs that you are not far from the African coast.

Cape Verde is fairly difficult to spot on a world map, or even on a map of Africa, but the country has a lot to offer. Each island serves up a different set of attractions and reasons to visit and each island feels vastly different from the last.

Cape Verde can accommodate those seeking nightlife with its loud and vibrant music scene, it can please outdoor enthusiasts with its perfect and picturesque terrain for hiking or watersports. But if you are simply looking to relax by the sea, then Cape Verde can also fulfill you desires with its perfect golden sandy beaches or its healing black sand beaches. No matter who you are; Cape Verde will certainly appeal to you in some way, shape or form. Let’s explore the best places to visit in Cape Verde !

Pico do Fogo

Fogo, meaning fire, is the most prominent of all of the Cape Verde islands with a maximum altitude of 2,900 metres above sea level.

The volcano Pico do Fogo is the main attraction here and can be climbed in around six hours, using the nearby town Cha de Caldeiras as a starting point.

The largest city on the island is Sao Filipe which is the fourth largest city in Cape Verde and also home to the islands airport. The beaches on the island are stunning and well worth exploring.

Sal

The island of Sal is known as Cape Verde’s sunniest island. As you approach the island in your plane, you will find it hard to believe that you are about to land on such an unspoiled golden gem.

The island does however have an international airport and a growing population of around 25,000 people.

The islands climate is very hot and dry and the miles and miles of sandy beaches make this island a real tropical paradise for those looking to relax by the sea.

3. Palmeira

Palmeira

Situated on the sunny, sandy island of Sal, Palmeira is a busy harbour town responsible for many of Cape Verde’s imports and exports. There is plenty to attract tourists to the town including many restaurants, lively bars and beautiful architecture.

The town is also revered amongst divers who flock from around the globe to experience the many underwater caves and reefs located just off the coastline of the town.

If you are looking to cure some aching muscles after hiking (or even just exploring the town) then the salt baths here are perfect for soothing relaxation.

4. Santa Maria

Santa Maria

Also situated on the island of Sal, Santa Maria is a lively and developed city. The hotels in the city are of the highest standard and will comfortably meet, if not surpass, the expectations of travellers from Europe and North America.

The city is one of the most ideal locations in Cape Verde for a classic beach resort holiday. The sandy beaches that lie only a few minutes walk from the luxurious hotels offer clear blue water and watersports such as jet-skiiing and scuba diving.

For tourists looking for culture and history, the main sight here is the Weighhouse in the old harbour which was used in the past to weigh salt before export.

Praia

Praia is situated on the fertile island of Santiago and is the capital city of Cape Verde. The city, like many capitals, is the economic and political home of Cape Verde. The town is not as focused on tourism as many destinations in Cape Verde but it does have plenty to explore nonetheless.

The old colonial buildings in the city’s old town are great for exploring in the sunshine and make for some pretty photo opportunities too. There are also churches, a presidential palace and the parliament building to be seen.

If all the exploring and culture gets too much then there are, of course, beautiful sandy beaches nearby although it should be noted that the nearby Praia de Gamboa is not recommended for swimming.

Sal Rei

The capital city of the Cape Verde’s easternmost island; Sal Rei retains a relaxed feel despite being home to more than half of the islands population. The main plaza of the city has a distinctly African feel with goods being sold by traders and colourful flowers and buildings.

The plaza is a great place for souvenir shopping whilst in Cape Verde and the goods on offer here range from wooden ornaments to flamboyant fabrics. The baroque style church in the city is one of the main tourist attractions along with the many colonial buildings.

There are also more stunning beaches to explore if you feel inclined to do so.

Mindelo

The city of Mindelo has a reputation for being home to a real mix of cultures. Mindelo is located on the island of Sao Vicente and due to a decline in the economy and harbour here in the last decade, the city is now home to many people living in slum like conditions.

Despite these conditions however the island retains its claim of being the cultural capital of Cape Verde and is a must visit for travellers hoping to experience lively nightlife in the country.

The music clubs and bars here will keep you entertained until the early hours. In the daytime, the fish market and harbour in the town are worth exploring.

8. Ribeira Grande

Ribeira Grande

Nestled in a valley of the same name, Ribeira Grande is a cosy but stunning city on the Santo Antao island. The winding streets here are as charming as the small restaurants and guesthouses that occupy them.

The attractions for tourists include a lively food market and a clothes market as well as the Nossa Senhora do Rosario church.

For relaxation, try the hot springs in the city which are a popular tourist attraction but also retain a calm and natural feel.

9. Porto Novo

Porto Novo

This city, which is also located on the island of Santo Antao, has a constant dry feeling exacerbated by the hot dusty wind that blows here.

The city is home to a great museum detailing the lives of Porto Novo’s past kings as well as a royal palace and several government and colonial buildings worth visiting.

The royal palace, which was formerly occupied by King Toffa, is one of the best ways to experience and learn about how African royalty lived.

10. Ribeira Brava

Ribeira Brava

Capital of the island of Sao Nicolau, Ribeira Brava is a small city with a grand backdrop.

Surrounded by mountains, the city is a lively one and begins the day early with traders setting up and selling from wooden crates all along the narrow streets.

The colourful buildings that line the streets of the town centre are worth visiting. For tourists, the city has ample accommodation options and also a modern market hall where food, clothing and other amenities can be purchased.

  • 11.  Tarrafal

Tarrafal

The city of Tarrafal is a 20 mile drive from Ribeira Brava and now has more inhabitants than tits close neighbor.

The city is one of the most popular place for beach swimming on the island as it has easy access and the black sands here are rumoured to relieve pain due to minerals such as Iodine.

As well as beaches, Tarrafal is home to the largest harbour on the island of Sao Nicolau and also has many quality restaurants and shops to keep tourists entertained.

Maio

The island of Maio is known for its secluded and paradisaical beaches. The golden sand and calm sea conditions make the island first choice for those looking for a relaxing beach holiday in a stunning location.

Bird-watchers will also find this island to be a paradise due to the many rare birds that frequent it including rare larks and courses.

The capital of the island, Vila do Maio is located right by the sea and is home to a beautiful colonial Portuguese church.

Sea Turtle

Although it is only a small town, Morro on the island of Maio is worth mentioning.

The beaches here are the finest in Cape Verde. Surrounded by palm trees with golden sand, the beaches are idyllic.

If you are not already tempted to visit Morro, then the sea turtles that visit the island to lay their eggs in the summer will surely seal the deal.

14. Vila Nova Sintra

Vila Nova Sintra

Another small town with a lot of beauty. The town of Nova Sintra is widely thought to be one of the most beautiful on all the islands in Cape Verde. Perched on the Brava mountains, the town has two story houses with their own gardens; proving that there is some slight wealth in these parts compared to the rest of Cape Verde.

There is a church and market worth seeing here but the number one reason to visit Vila Nova Sintra is the village itself and its extraordinary location.

Be sure to see the stone replica of Christopher Columbus’s ship which guards the eastern entrance to the town.

15. Sao Filipe

Sao Filipe

Sao Filipe is home the island airport on the island of Fogo. It has black lava beaches and is a truly picturesque city.  The upper and lower sections of the city are separated by the Alto San Pedro which is essentially a large plaza.

The city should be visited for bustling markets, which take place every morning, brightly coloured buildings and of course the nearby volcanic craters.

If you are looking to visit a beach while in Sao Filipe, it is best to travel a little distance from the city where the beaches are much cleaner.

A travel guide to the best Cape Verde attractions on every island

Recently, Cape Verde has been experiencing a boom when it comes to tourism. No wonder as the archipelago in the heart of the Atlantic has tons of things to offer! Whereas most people are just seeking pristine beaches and endless sunshine, there is much more to do in Cape Verde.

After having visited every island of Cape Verde (except Boa Vista and Sao Nicolau ), I put together this extensive guide about the best things to do in Cape Verde.

Cape Verde consists of 10 islands. However, only 3 of them are properly suitable for beach holidays. They are divided into 2 groups: the Barlovento (northern) Islands and the Sotavento (southern) Islands.

So, what are the islands of the Cape Verde archipelago?

A boat with blue and red linings and writings Cabo Verde is near the camera. It is on the seashore with beautiful blue waters at the background,

  • Santiago (with Cape Verde’s capital Praia )
  • Sao Vicente
  • Santo Antao
  • Sao Nicolau
  • Santa Luzia (a desert island)

After visiting every island of the Cape Verdean archipelago, I want to share with you a non-exhaustive list of the best things to do in Cape Verde and the most gorgeous attractions in Cape Verde.

Intro: Tourism in Cape Verde: Why you matter!

things to do in santo antao, a day in santo antao, cape verde, cabo verde, ponta do sol, where to stay in santo antao, trekking, hiking trail, santo antao cabo verde, attractions, hotels in santo antao, holidays in cape verde, accommodation, beaches, car rental, xoxo, ribeira grande, porto novo, fontainhas

Cape Verde has extremely ambitious plans to become one of the most important holiday destinations in Western Africa.

So far, Sal and Boa Vista have been converted into mass tourism hubs with large all-inclusive holidays managed by international hotel groups. Unfortunately, the local population doesn’t see much of the benefits generated by the tourism on Sal and Boa Vista .

Even worse; the massive growth on these 2 islands fosters emigration from other, smaller islands. Hoping to land a (not very rewarding) job in the tourism sector, young people leave the poorer islands such as Brava , Fogo , or Santo Antao . The results are abandoned villages and lands.

However, in theory, there is no need to leave the outer islands of Cape Verde!

Every single one is a treasure on its own and mostly; they differ a lot! Not only the landscapes but also the people and the culture are very different on every island. In all, every single island has the potential to be a tourist destination on its own:

  • Brava , Fogo and Santo Antao for hikers
  • Santiago and Sao Vicente for culture, music, and water sports
  • Maio for its pristine beaches

For some reason (that are unknown to me yet), Sal and Boa Vista get all the attention of large tour operators and most tourists in general, leaving the other islands deserted.

The good news though is, that you can change this! Take the decision to go beyond Sal and Boa Vista and you’ll be rewarded with a travel experience of a lifetime when going on sustainable holidays in Cape Verde .

Go dance alone on the empty beaches of Maio , wonder at the mesmerizing valleys of Santo Antao , listen to century-old music in Mindelo , be in awe of the Fogo volcano, etc.

In short; fall in love with the real wonders of Cape Verde!

1. Visit Santa Maria and its beaches

cabo verde, beach, boat, colors

Santa Maria is the main tourist hub of Sal . Most of the resorts, hotels, restaurants, and bars are located here. The town is famous for its Santa Maria Beach which boasts turquoise water and extremely fine sand.

There are many bars and restaurants on the beach that are waiting for you to serve the finest fish.

The highlight of Santa Maria Beach is the pier where the locals sell their fish. It’s the best place to watch the daily grind and interact with the locals. It’s definitely one of the top things to do in Sal , Cape Verde.

2. Head to Kite Beach

boa vista, best beaches in cape verde, cabo verde, santa monica beach

Kite Beach is only a 10-min drive away from Santa Maria . It’s one of the best beaches for kite surfing in Cape Verde. It’s extremely windy and the waves can be very strong!

Even if you don’t kite surf, you can just relax at the bar and watch the stunts of the surfers.

If you are eager to learn, there’s a kite school on site where you can borrow material or get a kite surfing lesson. It’s one of the coolest things to do in Santa Maria , Cape Verde.

Book here a kite lesson in Sal

3. Visit Blue Eye – Buracona Lagoon

burac

Visiting the Blue Eye is probably one of the most popular tours from Santa Maria . Also known as “ Buracona “, this place has a very special, almost magical atmosphere.

The lagoon is located northwest of the island and a perfect place for a swim.

If the sun rays hit the water, its color turns turquoise and allows you to see the ground of the water.

Check rates for island tours here

4. Visit the Pedro Lume Salt Mines

cape verde, sal, salinas, salt mines sal island

Sal is small and mostly desert. Besides the Buracona Lagoon , the salt mines of Pedro Luma are a must-do!

Located in the east of the country, they can be visited with a guided tour or by aluguer (collective taxi).

If you reach the village, you can already feel the remote vibe. To me, it felt like a ship graveyard as there were plenty of them. There’s also the emblematic church that makes a great photo motive.

Once you actually made it to the salt mines, you’ll stand in front of a natural wonder that once made Sal one of the wealthiest islands of Cape Verde.

Tourists can float in the salty waters of the salt mines and learn more about the salt production back in time.

There’s also an excellent restaurant next to the mine’s entrance. It serves some of the best fish carpaccio I’ve eaten in my life!

5. Go Sea Turtle Watching

things to do in cape verde, cabo verde, turtle watching

Did you know that Cape Verde has the third-largest population of nesting Caretta Caretta (loggerhead sea turtles) in the world?

If you love animals, sea turtle watching is a must in Cape Verde, and particularly on the sandy islands of Sal , Maio , and Boa Vista .

Indeed, the Cape Verde archipelago is one of the most important places for sea turtle nesting. The best time to spot turtles is between July and October. But please, always book a tour with a professional guide and respect the sea turtles!

Check sea turtle watching tours here

6. Go diving in Cape Verde

things to do in cape verde, cabo verde, diving in sal, maio

If you love to dive into the big blue, I recommend go diving in Cape Verde.

Whereas there are also dive clubs in Boa Vista and Maio , you have the largest offer in Sal .

7. Do Watersports

Kids tube riding tawed by speedboat on Croatian coast. Summer sea fun and adventure. Exciting water sport. tenerife, spain, watersports

Boa Vista is one of the best places to do water sports. Not only is the water extremely clear but on top, there seems to be a beach for every taste.

Whether you just want to have a relaxing swim, watch turtles or get active, there is a beach for you!

When it comes to water sports, you can opt between kite surfing, windsurfing, surfing, sailing, kayaking or diving. As you see, you’ll be spoiled for choice if you enjoy being in the sea.

Check water sport tours here

8. Visit The Viana Desert

things to do in cape verde, cabo verde, viana desert, boa vista island

The Viana Desert is one of the natural wonders of Cape Verde. Located in the northwestern part of the island, it is one of the top things to do in Cape Verde.

On a stretch of 5 km, the Atlantic winds carried the fine sands of the Sahara to Boa Vista . It’s truly a place where you’ll wonder at nature and its tranquility.

In order to visit the desert, you should book a tour and please note that access to motor vehicles is limited!

9. Explore Sal Rei

boa vista, best beaches in cape verde, cabo verde, santa monica beach

Sal Rei is the capital of Boa Vista and with its 6.000 inhabitants, it’s home to more than half of Boa Vista ’s population.

However, it is not a bustling capital! Sal Rei is famous for its relaxing and laid-back vibe. If you love colorful architecture, you’ll be amazed by the colorful houses and churches.

I also recommend just taking the time to sit down at a bar, have a local drink, and just soak up the Cape Verdean vibe of “No stress!”.

Check island tours and reviews here

10. Visit the Shipwreck of the Cabo Santa Maria

boa vista, cape verde, holidays, shipwreck, santa monica, cabo verde, holidays, beaches

The massive shipwreck of the Cabo Santa Maria on the beach of Atalanta is probably the most popular photo motive of Boa Vista . It quickly became one of the most popular attractions of Cape Verde.

Standing out tall of the water, these are the remains of a large cargo ship that ran aground in 1968 while crossing the Atlantic.

Today, the shipwreck is a source of inspiration for local artists and a popular destination for tours from Boa Vista . It’s one of the prettiest things to do on Cape Verde.

Please, note that recently, petty theft is raising on Atalanta Beach !

11. Relax at Chaves Beach

chaves beach, boa vista island, cape verde, cabo verde holidays

Chaves Beach is located in the western part of the island. This 5 km long beach is probably one of the best beaches in Cape Verde.

The gold-white sand is extremely fine and you’ll be amazed by the saturated turquoise color of the ocean. There are almost no facilities, but it is a great place for a swim. If you are lucky, there will be some wind so that you can even go windsurfing!

During July and August, Chaves Beach is one of the best places to go turtle watching in Cape Verde. But please always remain respectful and keep your distance!

Best Things to do in Cape Verde: Fogo

fogo, things to do, cape verde, cabo verde, holidays, vacation, hiking, trekking, sao vicente, ferry

12. Hike the volcano

Mount fogo, volcano, things to do in cape verde, cabo verde

The Pico do Fogo is probably one of the most stunning natural attractions of Cape Verde. No wonder that it is considered one of the 7 natural wonders of the archipelago.

The hike takes around 5 hours and is of moderate difficulty. You’ll climb up to 2.829 m. You can also opt to do the Pico do Fogo combined with the Pico Pequeno (small volcano).

The trail starts Cha das Caldeiras and I recommend asking your host to organize a guided hike. Indeed, the trail is not easy to find and it can even be dangerous to climb the volcano!

I recommend staying at Casa Alcindo as he’s not only an extraordinary guide but also provides beautiful accommodation inside the crater.

Guided tour of the big volcano: 40 €

Check tours here

13. Do a wine tasting

fogo, things to do, cape verde, cabo verde, holidays, vacation, hiking, trekking, sao vicente, ferry

Did you ever associate wine to Cape Verde? Well, Fogo is home to the only wine production on the entire archipelago!

The grapes are growing inside the crater which gives the wine of Fogo its unique, characteristic taste. Fogo wine, generally known as “ Vinho do Chã “, is only selectively exported, thus it’s a true gem that you’ll taste here!

The entire production is eco-friendly and managed by small, local and family-owned businesses.

In order to visit the wine cellars, follow the signs after reaching the Fogo crater.

14. Buy local coffee

Fogo boasts the largest coffee production on Cape Verde. The plantations are located in the surroundings of Mostreiros and can be visited.

However, you don’t need to head to Fogo to purchase coffee from Cape Verde. Almost every supermarket on any island sells the tasty coffee beans. Just ask the vendor for “ kriola ” or “ emicela ” coffee.

15. Visit the colonial town of Sao Filipe

fogo, things to do, cape verde, cabo verde, holidays, vacation, hiking, trekking, sao vicente, ferry

There are only a few towns on Cape Verde that can compete with Sao Filipe from an architectural perspective.

The bright, colorful buildings, the town’s grid layout, and the cobblestone paved, narrow streets are symbolical for colonial architecture.

Most hotels on Fogo are located in Sao Filipe and I recommend staying at least one night in order to dive into the local, easy-going grind.

A walk at night in Sao Filipe is one of the most scenic experiences in Cape Verde.

16. Hike from Cha das Caldeiras to Mostreiros

Fogo hiking, mostreiros, cabo verde, things to do in Cape Verde

If you think that hiking up the Pico do Fogo is the only hike to do on Fogo , you couldn’t be more wrong.

There is another spectacular trail waiting for you from Cha das Caldeiras to Mostreiros .

I particularly liked the extremely saturated green colors of Mother Nature. They seem even brighter after experiencing the baren, black sands of the Fogo crater.

17. Enjoy local music in Fogo

Before Cape Verde became a coveted holiday destination, the archipelago was mostly known for one thing: its music! Namely; it was Cesaria Evora who exported the most famous music genre of Cape Verde: morna .

However, there are plenty of talented musicians who are excelling at morna . If you want to enjoy local music and support local artists, I recommend attending a concert at the Sete Sois Sete Luas cultural center in Sao Filipe, Fogo.

The center is the cultural hub of the island and is home to an excellent restaurant. A must thing to do in Fogo !

Top Things to do in Cape Verde: Sao Vicente

18. Enjoy culture in Mindelo

mindelo, carnival, sao vicente, cabo verde, cape verde

Mindelo is also known for being the cultural capital of Cape Verde. Not only is it the hometown of the most famous Cape Verdean singer, Cesaria Evora , but it also boasts numerous museums and art shops.

The variety and cultural wealth of Mindelo are partly due to the Mindelo marina and harbor. For a long time, the port of Mindelo was the main gate for exports and imports.

Nowadays, Mindelo is home to the only marina in Cape Verde. There’s thus always a large international community in Mindelo .

Considered as one of the top things to do in Cape Verde, the cultural scene of Mindelo is a must!

Check guided tours of Mindelo here

19. Visit the Mindelo Market

mindelo market, cape verde, cabo verde

One of my favorite places in Mindelo is definitely the covered market. In fact, there are 2 markets in Mindelo .

The first one is the most traditional, ancient and covered one. It’s located in the main boulevard street. The building alone is worth a visit!

The second one is open-air and is located on Praça d’Estrela . Here, you can get all kinds of fruits, vegetables, electronic gadgets, and clothes.

My highlight was the tailors from the African mainland who will make you a tailor-made dress within 3 days! It’s definitely one of the best Cape Verde souvenirs to get in Mindelo .

20. Hike Monte Verde

sao vicente, things to do in sao vicente, mindelo, cape verde, cabo verde, holidays, beaches, resorts, hotels

Even though Sao Vicente is often seen as a gate to Santo Antao (a hiker’s paradise!), you can also do fabulous hikes in Sao Vicente .

One of the best ones is without any doubt climbing Monte Verde . It will provide you with breathtaking views over Mindelo , Monte Cara , and neighboring Santo Antao .

In order to get to the trail, take an aluguer (collective taxi) to Calhau and ask the driver to drop you off at the feet of Monte Verde.

The hike is of intermediate difficulty and takes about 2-3 hours.

Check Sao Vicente tours here

21. Dine out in Calhau

calhau, praia grande, sao vicente beach

I probably had the best meal of all my Cape Verde visits in Calhau . The small town is a coveted destination for Sunday excursions which consist in eating all day long!

There are 2 main restaurants in Calhao , Restaurante Hamburg and Chez Loutcha . Both are competing for the title of the best fish and seafood barbecue in Cape Verde.

If you want to enjoy their legendary buffet, book your experience ahead in Chez Loutcha in Mindelo . Prices include the transfer to Calhau .

Restaurante Hamburg is much smaller but the grilled baby squids were some of the best I had in my entire life!

If you want to extend your visit, head to Calhao Beach which is one of the prettiest beaches in Sao Vicente .

22. Windsurf in Sao Pedro

sao vicente, things to do in sao vicente, mindelo, cape verde, cabo verde, holidays, beaches, resorts, hotels

Somehow, Sao Vicente holds something for every type of traveler. Also for water sports lovers!

If you come with your own material, you can have great surfing conditions in Salamansa and Baia das Gatas .

However, the best conditions for windsurfing can be found in Sao Pedro . It’s a scenic bay and there are several companies where you can rent your surfing gear.

If you don’t want to get wet, I recommend hiking to the Farol de D. Amélia lighthouse. It provides some of the best panorama views on the island!

23. Eat a cachupa

cabo verde, cape verde, hotels, winter holidays, winter sun, all inclusive, boa vista, beach holidays

You can’t leave Cape Verde without eating a cachupa ! It’s the most typical food from Cape Verde .

Every restaurant and family have their very own recipe and you can have cachupa on any island.

It consists of corn and beans, topped with a fried egg. To make it extra tasty, a slice of fried linguiça (sausage) is added. Cachupa is not only a must-eat in Cape Verde but also one of the cheapest food to eat in Cape Verde.

I particularly liked the cachupas in Mindelo and my favorite one was at Dokas , at the dive center of Mindelo .

Set in a cool, rather sophisticated location with perfect Wi-Fi, you can get a cachupa for 1,5 €! Add a fresh fruit juice to it and you’ll have the perfect foodie experience in Cabo Verde !

24. Hike Cova Crater – Paul trail

santo antao, things to do, hiking in cabo verde, cape verde, hiking trails santo antao, hotels santo antao, trekking, sao vicente

Santo Antao is famous for being a paradise for hikers. There are countless trails awaiting you and one is more scenic than the other one. In total, I stayed more than 10 days in Santo Antao and I found it too short to do all the hikes that I wanted to do!

Thus, even if you are staying only 2 days in Santo Antao , I recommend doing at least the most scenic trail: from Cova Crater through Paul valley .

Take an aluguer (collective taxi) to Cova and have a quick breakfast at Biosfera do Amor which offers splendid views over Sao Vicente . Their handmade jams and bread are a real delight!

From here, hike down the crater until the trail takes you up to the crater’s borders. You’ll enjoy the best view of Santo Antao in Paul valley .

The entire trail goes downwards and lasts about 3 hours. You’ll pass through scenic villages where you can stop at local bars, having a drink or traditional meal. To me, it’s one of Cape Verde’s main points of interest.

25. Enjoy street art of Ribeira Grande

santo antao, cape verde, hiking, cabo verde, best trails, where to stay, sao vicente, ferry

Santo Antao is not all about nature! If you want to enjoy local street art and culture, I strongly recommend heading to Ribeira Grande . Have a walk through the city and explore its colorful murals.

Even though the town appears to be really grey at first sight, the colorful street art makes the city walks much more enjoyable.

If you can’t get enough of the local, contemporary art, head to the cultural center of 7 Sois 7 Luas , which hosts concerts and exhibitions on a regular basis. It’s definitely one of the best places to get to know local artists.

26. Take a dip at the natural swimming pools

santo antao, things to do, hiking in cabo verde, cape verde, hiking trails santo antao, hotels santo antao, trekking, sao vicente

Unfortunately, Santo Antao doesn’t boast many beaches (except Tarrafal on the southern side). The few beaches that you may come across may seem tempting, but please keep in mind that it’s extremely dangerous to swim here!

Thus, in order to be on the safe side when it comes to swimming, take an aluguer (collective taxi) to Sinagoga (15 min from Ribeira Grande ). This quaint village boasts some of the best natural swimming pools in Santo Antao.

They are completely safe! Ask the locals for the “ piscinas naturais ” or head directly towards the ruins on top of the rocks.

27. Visit Fontainhas, the prettiest village of Cape Verde

santo antao, things to do, hiking in cabo verde, cape verde, hiking trails santo antao, hotels santo antao, trekking, sao vicente

Some consider Fontainhas one of the natural wonders of Cape Verde. No wonder as the scenic setting of this small village even was awarded the label of “prettiest village of Cape Verde” by National Geographic !

It’s definitely a must-do when visiting Santo Antao ! I recommend discovering the village on foot. It’s an easy hike away from Ponta do Sol and lasts about 1 hour.

When in Fontainhas , make sure to enter the village and have a drink at Tchu’s Bar. His fruit juices are a delight!

28. Have a grogue and local fruit

santo antao, things to do, hiking in cabo verde, cape verde, hiking trails santo antao, hotels santo antao, trekking, sao vicente

Santo Antao is also known as being the garden of Cape Verde. Almost ⅓ of the archipelago’s population is being sustained by fruits and vegetables coming from Santo Antao .

One of the lushest valleys is probably Paul valley . It’s home to countless coconut, papaya, banana, and mango trees.

Thus, when in Santo Antao , ask at the restaurant for the seasonal fruit and indulge in coconut biscuits, passion fruit caipirinhas, and banana bread.

Santo Antao is also home to one of the largest grogue production sites in the archipelago. The local distilled spirit is made of sugar cane and used to prepare tasty caipirinhas.

If you want to go for the softer option, try a ponche . It’s a liquor prepared with local fruits, such as passion fruit, coconut, or tamarind.

29. Hike til you drop

things to do in santo antao, a day in santo antao, cape verde, cabo verde, ponta do sol, where to stay in santo antao, trekking, hiking trail, santo antao cabo verde, attractions, hotels in santo antao, holidays in cape verde, accommodation, beaches, car rental, xoxo, ribeira grande, porto novo, fontainhas

If you enjoy hiking, Santo Antao will be your heaven! Even after staying for more than 10 days in Santo Antao , I didn’t have time enough to do all the hikes I wanted!

The volcanic landscape created plenty of valleys and each of them has a different microclimate. Some trails take you to villages such as Corvo or Fontainhas that seem to be cut off from time.

So far, not many trails are indicated. However, there are efforts to put landmarks in order to help hikers. In most cases, the trails are former caminhos vicinais (side roads) which were used to interconnect villages.

Some of the best hikes in Santo Antao are:

  • Ponta do Sol – Cha d’Igreja
  • Ribeira Grande – Xoxo
  • Corda – Coculi

30. Visit Cidade Velha

Cidade Velha old fort in Santiago - Cape Verde - Cabo Verde

Santiago is home to Cidade Velha (Old Town), declared “Intangible Heritage of Humanity” by the UNESCO. It’s the first city to be built by the Europeans in the South of the Sahara and it was the capital of Cape Verde until 1770.

The original design of the settlement is still intact and you feel like you dived right into the 16th century! It’s impressive how the original features remain untouched!

Cidade Velha (Old Town) was one of the most important places for the Atlantic trade of enslaved persons. That’s why it is also considered as one of the birthplaces of the first developed creole societies.

Book a tour to Cidade Velha here

31. Explore the bustling capital of Praia

santiago, praia things to do in cape verde, cabo verde

Praia is a “love at second sight affair”. Before visiting, I mostly heard that it was a dangerous place, for locals and tourists alike. Then, when you arrive, you’ll spot countless grey, often unfinished houses or resorts.

However, Praia ’s magic becomes evident after you scratch on the surface.

The main tourist area is the Plateau where you can enjoy the administrative buildings in colonial architecture style. Don’t forget to visit the market which is considered one of the prettiest in Cape Verde.

From here, head towards Prainha and Quebra Canela to enjoy a drink at the numerous beach bars that opened recently.

Check guided tours in Praia here

32. Have a music night out in Praia

If you are interested in enjoying Cape Verde’s rich musical culture, Praia is the place to be! Quintal da Musica – 5al da Musica host live concerts in Cape Verde’s most famous music styles such as morna, funan á, and coladeira.

Some of the best music bars in Praia are:

  • Fogo d’África Restaurante/Bar & Club
  • Quintal da Musica – 5al da Musica
  • Kebra Kabana

Praia music festivals you shouldn’t miss:

  • Kriol Jazz Festival Praia
  • Festival Gamboa
  • Virada d’Anu
  • Noite Branca

A night out in the Cape Verdean capital is definitely one of the best things to do in Cape Verde.

33. Enjoy the beach of Tarrafal

things to do in cape verde, cabo verde, tarrafal beach, santiago island

Tarrafal Beach , located in the north of Santiago , is often considered as one of the prettiest beaches in Cape Verde.

Indeed, it’s different from the beaches of Maio or Boa Vista , as Tarrafal Beach has palm trees and a very laid-back, surfer vibe that you can’t find on any other islands. On top, it has white, fine sand.

There are plenty of accommodation options and restaurants. Thus, I recommend staying at least a few days in order to enjoy the “No stress!” vibe.

34. Hike in Serra Malagueta

Hiking in serra malagueta, cap verde, cabo verde, santiago island

Santiago holds something for any type of traveler. It’s not only an island with an immense cultural offer but it also has numerous hiking trails for nature lovers.

The best hikes of Santiago , Cape Verde can be found in Serra Malagueta . With a total surface of 774 hectares and 25 endemic species, this natural park is one of the most important ones of the archipelago.

There are hikes for any level, whether you’re up to a 2-hours hike or an 8-hours one!

You can reach the entrance gate of Serra Malagueta natural park by aluguer (collective taxi) from Praia , Assomada , and Tarrafal . Just tell the driver that he should drop you off at Serra Malagueta .

The entrance fee to the natural park costs 200 CVE (1,81 €)

35. Visit the Market of Assomada

assomoda market, things to do in santiago, cabo verde

The market of Assomada is the most important market in Santiago . It’s even livelier than the market of Praia !

Whereas every day is market day in Assomada , Tuesdays and Saturdays are the most important days. On these days, the market duplicates in size!

From early in the morning until 5 pm, you can buy anything from vegetables, fruits, Cabo Verde souvenirs , clothing, and even animals!

Visiting the market of Assomada is definitely a unique way to dive into the Cape Verdean daily grind.

Visit the Assomada market with a guided tour.

36. Chill at the best beaches of Cape Verde

maio, ilha do maio, cape verde, cabo verde, best beaches cape verde, where to stay cape verde, hotels, resorts, vacation cabo verde

To me, Maio has the best beaches in Cape Verde . Although Sal and Boa Vista also have beautiful beaches, in recent years they have fallen victim to mass tourism and the large hotel complexes that go with it.

Maio seems to be a precious gem that managed to (still) protect its pristine beaches and unspoiled character. On some beaches, you can literally walk for hours without ever crossing a soul!

So don’t expect to find any bars or restaurants ! The beaches of Maio have preserved their original state.

Some of the best beaches in Maio can be found close to the capital, Vila do Maio . In order to explore the other ones, I recommend taking a taxi or renting a bike.

The best beaches in Maio are:

  • Bitche Rocha
  • Ponta Preta
  • Ribeira Dom Joao (for surfing!)
  • Praia de Santana

To me, it is the best place to go in Cape Verde for pristine beaches.

37. Eat fresh goat cheese

maio, cabo verde, things to do, cap vert, cape verde

Fresh goat cheese is one of the star products of the Sotavento (southern) Islands. Almost every household produces its own! However, in Maio , more precisely in Ribeira Dom Joao , one of the first goat cheese factories has been built.

Maintained exclusively by women and supported by the European Union, I strongly recommend visiting them and supporting this small, local business.

They have installed a little bar where you can taste the freshly made goat cheese.

Address: Main road of Ribeira Dom João

38. Enjoy Cape Verdean music

If the Gross Domestic Product of Cape Verde could be measured in terms of music, the country would be one of the richest in the world!

Whereas Cesaria Evora and Mayra Andrade are Cape Verde’s most famous exports, there are plenty of local artists to be discovered. You’ll hear some of the songs during your entire stay because music is simply everywhere in Cape Verde!

If you want to support local artists in Cape Verde and have a unique experience, why not organize a private concert? The 7Sois7Luas cultural centers are fostering and supporting local musicians.

The centers are spread out throughout the archipelago and at any of them, you can order a private concert.

Find all the information and contacts at www.7sois7luas.com

39. Go sea turtle spotting in Maio

things to do in cape verde, cabo verde, turtle watching maio, sal, boa vista

Did you know that the flattest island in Cape Verde is also one of the most important places for sea turtle nesting?

Second only to Boa Vista , the extensive sandy beaches of Maio are important for the nesting Caretta caretta (loggerhead sea turtles).

In order to preserve this unique wealth, the Maio Biodiversity Foundation was created in 2010, with the main objective to know and protect nature for sustainable development.

For this purpose, the Maio Biodiversity Foundation invites both national and international volunteers to come to Maio for an extended stay and support their endeavors.

However, if you are only staying for a short time in Maio , ask for a sea turtle nesting tour at the office of the Maio Biodiversity Foundation at the church’s square. Indeed, sea turtle tours are one of the top things to do in Cape Verde.

Best Things to do in Cape Verde: Brava

  • Pôr do Sol (Faja d’Agua)

40. Explore the colonial town of Nova Sintra

brava, nova sintra, island, cap verde, things to do, cabo verde

Nova Sintra is the only island capital that is not located on the sea. After arriving in Furna with the ferry, a long winding road takes you up to Nova Sintra , with its 7.000 inhabitants.

Named after the Portuguese town near Lisbon , Nova Sintra shares some characteristics with its Portuguese equivalent. It has a humid and fresh climate and is surrounded by lush greenery and fabulous views on the ocean.

Even the floors and the houses have been built in an architectural style that remembers Portugal . In my humble opinion, Nova Sintra is one of the prettiest cities in Cape Verde.

41. Swim in the natural swimming pools of Faja d’Agua

brava, ilha brava, cabo verde, cape verde, things to do, ferry, hotels, trekking, hiking, vacation, holidays

After Nova Sintra , the bay of Fajã d’Agua is a real must-see in Brava ! Cut out on an imposing escarpment dotted with colorful houses, Fajã d’Agua is a place to watch time go by.

But it is the natural pools of Fajã d’Agua that are the real attraction of the village. With its crystal clear waters, it invites visitors to have a refreshing bath. For me, the swimming pools are some of the best Cape Verde tourist attractions.

Fajã d’Agua can be reached by hiking or by aluguer (collective taxi).

42. Hike, hike, hike!

travel cape verde, holidays, ferry, ferries, flights, boa vista, sal, resort, cheap holiday, winter sun, uk, cheap flights, sal, santo antao, hiking, sao vicente, visa, airport, international

Brava has plenty of trails to be explored. Serving initially to connect villages, they are nowadays mostly used by tourists that fell in love with Brava ’s rough landscape.

Also known as “ Ilhas das Flores ” (“Island of Flowers”), your hikes will be a green delight if you visit between August and October. The trails are framed by colorful bougainvillea, hibiscus flowers, and jasmine.

The best hiking Trails in Brava are:

  • Mato Grande : I recommend hiking up to Mato Grande in order to have a privileged view on Fogo and its massive volcano.
  • Fontainhas trail: It takes 4 hours and starts at the Mira Beleza viewpoint.
  • Hiking to Fajã d’Agua .

43. Enjoy some of the best Cape Verdean music

The rhythm of Brava is easy going and Nova Sintra has an almost enchanting, relaxing atmosphere.

In order to mingle with the locals and to get to know the music of Brava , I recommend watching out for the small tocatines (traditional music halls) in a bar or even in private houses that are open to visitors.

I am a big fan of the 7Sois7Lua s band of Brava . The main singer, Rosa , is a real “power of nature”, as friends of mine call her! Her charism and the rhythm of the band are unbeatable and will make sure that you’ll fall in love with the Cape Verdean music.

Ask at the 7Sois7Luas center in Nova Sintra about their next performances.

The rock formations and shapes will remind you of the Grand Canyon . Just that in Sao Nicolau you can have on top a refreshing swim next to the rock formations!

Un grand merci d'avance. Bien cordialement, Evelyne

Bonjour Paulina, Un grand merci pour votre réponse. Un doute persiste sur le choix entre Maio et Boa Vista pour son désert de Viana et son lagon de Buracona]. Qu'en pensez-vous ?

Bonjour Evelyne,

Cape Verde Travel Guide Africa

Visit all 10 Islands in the Amazing Archipelago of Cape Verde

My name’s Coumba and welcome to my travel guide on the amazing Cape Verde. I’m originally from Senegal. I moved to Niger with my family when I was 8 for my parents job. My travel adventures started from then on.

After 10 years in Niger, I went to study in France for a few years and then moved to the UK for a year abroad. I came back to France to finish my studies and travelled to Tahiti, French Polynesia for 6 months and to Johannesburg, South Africa for a further 6 months.

I even made it to Morocco for a year and a half. Now I am in Cape Verde. My love for travel really kicked off when I moved to the UK. It’s got to the point now where I feel like I can’t stay still. I’m always on the move, looking for new destinations to settle but only for a little while.

As for photography, I guess it came along the way while I was documenting my trips and sharing pictures on social media. It was just for fun and it still is. But now I really want to share my experiences, inspire people to discover new destinations and explore through my eyes.

The advantage of being an expat is that we can dig deeper into the different cultures and really get to understand them. My aim, with Amazing Passport, is also to show that despite my “weak passport” it is not that hard to discover the world and even be an expat.

Why Cape Verde should be on your Bucket List

Many people don’t know where Cape Verde is located on a map. They have never heard about it or think it’s located somewhere in the Caribbean. I didn’t know much about Cape Verde myself before moving here. I knew how to locate it on a map but not really what to expect.

As we say here, Cape Verde is “1 country, 10 destinations”. It’s an African archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean made up of 10 different islands. Each of these islands is totally unique and beautiful in its own way.

What I love about Cape Verde and Sal (where I live) is definitely the “vibe”. I guess it’s just “island life”. People are laid back, very nice and welcoming. The melting-pot of cultures is also another amazing part of Cape Verde. There’s African, Brazilian and Portuguese influences all mixed together.

Due to the country’s rich history, it has many different influences that can be found in everything from gastronomy to music and fashion.

Salinas de Pedra de Lume

Cape Verde Travel Guide: My Favourite Places

So far I haven’t visited all of the islands yet but I am eager to do it soon. I love Palmeira on Sal Island the most. It’s a small fisherman village with colourful houses, a nice atmosphere and music is always playing. You have the best fish in Africa here in a local restaurant by the pier.

I love Shark Bay too where one can paddle with lemon sharks. It’s such a cool feeling. In Boa Vista, my favourite area is Morro de Areia Nature Reserve. The landscape is incredible with sand dunes over the ocean. The scene is calm and peaceful (well at least by myself, there were no tourists).

Palmeira

10 Best Things To Do in Cape Verde

I recommend island hopping and discovering every single island when you visit Cape Verde. There are 10 islands that make up the archipelago. To be honest, I have heard so much about these places and I can’t wait to see them all myself. Let me introduce them to you below:

1. Visit Sal, The Beach-Lovers Paradise

Sal is where I currently live so if you visit Cape Verde make sure you come here first and say hi! This island is one the most popular islands for tourists due to the beaches. As I said, Palmeira fishing village is amazing and if you come in September be sure to check out the Santa Maria Music Festival.

Cape Verde Travel Guide

2. Party in São Vicente, The Cultural Heart of Cape Verde

São Vicente is considered the cultural capital of the archipelago. Many artists come from this amazing island including the most famous Cape Verdean singer, Cesária Évora. It’s also home to many great restaurants, bars and nightclubs. Plus the colourful Mindelo Carnival is not to be missed for its spectacle of music, dance and parades.

3. Explore the Unspoilt São Nicolau Island

This gem of an island is yet to be spoilt by tourism. In fact, it may be the best kept secret in all of Cape Verde. The barren ranges of the island offer some spectacular views on hiking trips as well as horse riding adventure. Then the capital, Ribeira Brava is a colonial town well worth a visit.

4. Marvel at the “Island of the Flowers” – Brava

Another hidden gem of Cape Verde is the island known as Brava . This teeny-tiny island is home to some beautiful flora and fauna and towering lava cliffs that will take your breath away. The best way to experience the island is by going on long walks through its mountainous terrain.

5. Relax at the Spectacular Beaches of Maio

Maio has terrain that resembles much of Boa Vista and Sal, especially some of the beaches. Discover stretches of unspoilt coastline which are perfect for sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling. Another fantastic aspect about Maio is that there are only 4000 locals, making it a relaxing place to visit.

6. Immerse yourself in the History of Santiago

The largest island of Cape Verde is a place called Santiago . It’s home to the historic capital city, Praia and the country’s old capital, Cidade Velha. The latter was the first city to be built by Europeans in West Africa and today is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

7. See Fogo with its Dramatic Volcanic Landscapes

Fogo is situated in the south-west of the archipelago and is famous for its dramatic volcanic landscapes. These incredible volcanoes should be included in every travel guide to Cape Verde. Pico do Fogo stands at an impressive 2,829 metres and dominates the island in a magnificent way.

8. Get Off-the-Beaten-Track at Santa Luzia

This island is one of the driest and most barren places on earth. For this reason, Santa Luzia remains uninhabited. Although you can still visit on a boat trip from São Vicent which takes roughly two hours. The beaches and sand dunes in the south are quite stunning and are fun to visit for the day.

9. Discover Pure Paradise at Boa Vista

Boa Vista is the very definition of paradise. The island is blessed with miles and miles of golden sand, crystal-clear waters and a chilled-out environment. Here you can relax at some of the best beaches in Cape Verde and get your adrenaline pumping with some fun water activities.

Cape Verde Travel Guide

10. Take Epic Adventures at Santo Antão

Imagine an island where massive green peaks and fertile craters are just a stone’s throw away from towns that literally hang on the edge of cliffs. That’s Santo Antão. There are endless adventures to enjoy here such as epic coastal drives, long hiking trips and stunning camping spots.

Cape Verde Travel Guide: People, Culture and Food

Cape Verdeans are very hospitable people. The “morabeza” spirit is a real thing. It means gentleness and kindness, like a softer way of living.

What I like most about the culture of Cape Verde is the hospitality, the chill vibe and the “no stress” motto. What’s better than having a drink on the beach, music playing in the background and people playing volleyball or soccer or going for a kitesurf? Life is simple and amazing.

When it comes to food, the typical national dish is called Cachupa . It’s a stew with corn, beans, vegetables, meat and Cape Verdean chorizo. There are a few different types of this dish to enjoy. However, my favourite dish is fish and seafood straight from the pier. The octopus is really to die for!

Cape Verde Travel Guide: Best Places to Stay

Cape Verde is untouched and authentic. But tourism is booming and people are getting to know it more and more. Sal is the most touristic island in Cape Verde. There are several hotels, including international ones.

The archipelago is still seen as an all-inclusive destination, therefore there are quite a few of these huge resorts but also non all-inclusive hotels like Hilton. There is every type of accommodation here – luxury, budget, Airbnb, etc. Most hotels are in Sal and Boa Vista.

On the lesser visited islands, there are more guesthouses, lodges and small hotels. No matter your preference, you’ll find something perfect for you.

What you Need to Know Before you Go

My advice to anyone wanting to visit Cape Verde is always: don’t be afraid of the unknown, get out of your comfort zone and try to stay with locals. Not for the safety aspect, because Cape Verde is a safe country, but for the stories they have to share and for their expertise of the place.

Locals are the ones who can take you to the best places in Cape Verde. They can show you the surroundings off-the-beaten-track and turn your experience from an ordinary one into an extraordinary one.

Thanks for reading my travel guide on Cape Verde. I hope it has inspired you to visit one of the most remarkable and beautiful places on earth!

But there is indeed one unmissable thing to do in Cape Verde: the Praia market . Wandering among the stalls of fish, meat, fruit and vegetables freshly produced by the locals means exploring the popular culture of the country and immersing yourself in the culinary habits of its population.

Intoxicate yourself with multiple flavors and scents under the sounds of shopkeepers interacting with their customers, authentic charm guaranteed! The city center of Praia is surrounded by a rocky plateau nicknamed “Platô”. On both sides of this Platô, extend the two beaches of the city, Praia Mar and Quebra Canela . Enjoy a stroll through Praia to visit the Archaeological Museum of Praia, then set off to visit Cidade Velha , ten kilometers to the west: the first city built by the Portuguese in the Middle Ages.

Fogo Island, Cape Verde

Fogo is the island that attracts adventurers. It is she who shelters the eponymous volcano, a sleeping beauty that has become, since 1995, an epic symbol in its own right for all enthusiasts looking for what to do in Cape Verde. Fogo is also São Filipe: capital of the place, starting point for volcanic ascent, it is a pied-à-terre that visitors like to encounter through a heritage of unsuspected riches.

As surprising as it may seem, Fogo is also a fertile land renowned throughout the archipelago: coffee, goat cheese, vegetables and vines ensure the island’s production is recognized throughout the world and promises to give visitors another taste. travel.

4. Mount Fogo

cape verde islands tourist attractions

Very famous, Pico do Fogo is the only still active volcano in the country, the highest point in Cape Verde, at 2,829 meters above sea level. How to visit Cape Verde without climbing Fogo?

Overlooking the caldera of Chã das Caldeiras, the volcano offers a magnificent spectacle. It has been active for 22 to 24 million years and the last eruption dates back to 2014. The hike with 1,200 meters of elevation in the scoria is really worth the detour: lunar landscape unique in the world or almost!

5. Saint Philip

Beyond its volcano, Fogo is home to a unique culture and heritage born of a crossbreeding of multiple traditions. A rich mix that has transformed the history of the island, originally colonized and slavery to develop the culture of cotton and more particularly, the manufacture of loincloths. Witness to the history of yesterday and tomorrow, São Filipe , capital of this volcanic land, is now home to some 5,000 inhabitants. Dressed in old colonial residences, churches and other places, it is a base that will appeal to all types of travellers.

If for you, visiting Cape Verde and Fogo exempts you from climbing the volcano, know that São Filipe has more than one trick in its land. After having criss-crossed the alleys of the city, discover its black sand beaches and let yourself be surprised by the superb panorama offered by the belvedere of Aguadinha.

A lunar experience that takes on its full meaning at the foot of the volcano, in the villages of Portela and Bangaeira . Victims of the volcano and today sentinels, they bear the marks of a nature as beautiful as it is powerful.

Brava, Cape Verde

The smallest island of Cape Verde, the main activity of Brava consists of hiking, pleasant if you do not feel like surveying the 2,829 meters of altitude of Pico do Fogo. We recommend Fontanha de Vinagre, Faja De Agua (especially for the natural pools, perfect for swimming) and the Jalunga lighthouse. In the north of the island, the islets of Rei and Luiz Carneiro allow you to see many colonies of birds and the highest point of Brava, the pico de Fontainhas, promises you a breathtaking view of the ocean.

Enfin pour découvrir la vie locale, son patrimoine et ses spécialités, faites une escale à Nova Sintra : capitale de l’île, elle est appréciée pour son accueil et ses soirées animées.

Good to know : Brava nevertheless remains the least easily accessible island of the archipelago (only accessible by boat from Fogo): if you go to visit Cape Verde wishing to be sheltered from tourism and off the beaten, then you’ve come to the right place.

Boa Vista, Cap Vert

It is in the small village of Pedra de Lume that what was the wealth of the island has taken up residence. Nestled in a crater, surrounded by a lunar landscape at the very end of a tunnel dug in the ground, the salt pans of Pedra de Lume offer a timeless setting typical of the village of Perda de Lume which also, with its old buildings to its stranded boats, to this immutable something. From the colors to the scents, the saltworks preserve a natural beauty which, despite being abandoned (activity there is now almost non-existent), definitely does not lose any charm.

Long banks of fine sand, heavenly beaches and idleness rhyme with the capital of the island. Typical and lively, Santa Maria is renowned for its warm welcome and relaxed pace of life. Moreover, its welcoming side has transformed it into a tourist destination: a village that has become a city, Santa Maria also bears a certain contrast.

Traditional buildings very quickly rubbed shoulders with hotel complexes… However, the charm still operates. So what to do in Cape Verde in Santa Maria? Well… Take a stroll! 13. The surrounding mountains

What to do in Cape Verde in São Vicente besides cultural discoveries? Go hiking! Raw and lush, the nature of the surroundings is a postcard setting. Discover Monte Verde , the highest point of the island and enjoy the superb panoramas of the place. What to do in Cape Verde other than the beach and photographing lunar scenery? It later became a forced labour camp for those opposing the regime. The visit to the Resistance Museum of Tarrafal lasts about one hour.

The island of Fogo is aptly named — in Portuguese, the word means “fire”, and reflects the fact that it’s home to an active volcano. It’s safe enough to hike up now, but you’ll need to be fit to tackle it. The activity is available at any time of year, but this is an ideal time to harness all that natural power and try your hand at kitesurfing. During this six-hour lesson, you’ll start on dry land, getting to grips with the equipment and learning how to control it on the beach. Once you’ve mastered your technique, you’ll head to the waves where the friendly instructors will encourage you in your first ride.

Mingling with lemon sharks in Shark Bay (Alamy)

12. Get up close and personal with sharks

If your natural instinct is to get out of the water if you learn there’s a shark in it, the tour of Shark Bay is not for you. The coastline on the eastern side of the island is home to colonies of lemon sharks, 2.5m-3m-long fish that feed just offshore. You can stay firmly on terra firma and watch from the beach as their fins glide through the water, or wade out into the shallows to join them for an hour. A naturalist guide is on hand to talk you through the experience.

13. Hike through a national park

The verdant slopes of the Serra da Malagueta mountain range in northern Santiago give hikers plenty to get excited about, with trails winding through valleys and over peaks, and something for all fitness levels. A six-hour trek in the Serra Malagueta Natural Park is a great introduction to the region. Starting at the top of the island’s second-highest peak, you’ll meander along narrow tracks through forests and past small farms growing mango and banana — perhaps being invited in to try some homemade grogue, a type of rum distilled from sugar cane, if you’re lucky. Be sure to keep an eye out for some native wildlife, including Cape Verde buzzards and a vervet monkey or two.

Salt ponds at Pedra de Lume (Alamy)

14. Float in a salt crater

Not only do the Cape Verde islands have their own little Sahara (Viana desert on Boa Vista), they also have their own version of the Dead Sea. Pedra de Lume is the centre of Sal’s salt production, a series of evaporation pools, a lake and factory on the eastern side of the island. You can learn about the history of the industry on a tour, and — even better — strip off and head into the salty lake, to bob about like a cork. Many organised trips offer a visit as part of a wider itinerary; the all-day tour suggested below includes many off-the-beaten-track locations and finishes at the Pedra de Lume.

15. Spot birds

Keen birders will find good reason to bring their binoculars to the Cape Verde islands. Among its 150 bird species are a number of endemic ones, including the Alexander’s swift, Cape Verde warbler, Iago sparrow and Raso lark. You can see some of these on a half-day birdwatching tour on the island of Boa Vista. You’ll spend some time at the Lago do Rabil wetlands on the west coast, with a professional guide helping you spot and identify lesser-known species as well as Egyptian vultures and red-billed straw tails.

The wreck of the Cabo Santa Maria off Boa Vista (Alamy)

16. Visit a shipwreck

Just offshore on the north coast of Boa Vista is the most unlikely sight: the rusting hulk of a cargo ship. The M/S Cabo Santa Maria was on its way to Brazil from Spain with a bounty that include four church bells destined for the new cathedral in Brasilia when it ran aground in 1968. It can now be reached by 4WD, and many wider tours include it on their itineraries. One example is a Toyota Landcruiser trip that takes in many sights of northern Boa Vista, including the wreck, Viana desert and the lonely Chapel of our Lady Fatima.

17. Go whale-watching

From March to May, pods of blue whales congregate in the waters off Cape Verde to mate and give birth. If you’re on the islands during this period, don’t miss the chance to take a boat tour to go out and see them. Leaving from Boa Vista, you’ll head across the waves to the mammals, while a local marine biologist gives you a briefing on their behaviour and habitats. Once the breeding grounds are reached, you’ll spend time spotting the creatures, with any luck watching as any number breach the water and plunge back into the depths, flipping their tails as they go.

18. Listen to morna

Set around a horseshoe bay, the town of Mindelo on the island of Sao Vicente is widely considered the cultural capital of Cape Verde. Its cobbled streets are home to colourful houses containing boutiques, craft shops and bars, and are the place to come to hear the soulful national music of “morna”. You can hear live music and get a proper cultural understanding of the islands on a private, full-day tour of the town. You’ll visit both palaces and markets, forts and squares and call into the home of Cesária Évora; the “barefoot diva” used to perform in bars in Mindelo and became known as the queen of morna.

19. Look for dolphins

Sitting on the prow on a yacht, cresting through the waves as the sun sparkles off the water and dolphins weave around the boat — there aren’t many better ways to spend a day on Cape Verde. Half and full-day tours are available from Santa Maria pier on the island of Sal. You’ll head out along the coast, watching for pods of dolphins as well as flying fish and turtles as you lounge on deck. When the yacht weighs anchor, you’ve a chance to join them — jumping into the warm water to swim and snorkel.

Paul Valley (Alamy)

20. Explore remote valleys

One of the greenest and most scenic of the Cape Verde islands, mountainous Santo Antao is also one of its least touristy. This makes it a great base for some terrific hiking. On a guided tour of the Paul Valley, you’ll follow old mule trails through small villages and farms, past fields positively overflowing with yams, bananas, sugarcane and coffee plants. As you stop to meet locals, your friendly guide will bring the valley to life by sharing stories and explaining its flora and fauna.

21. Climb a mountain

There are multiple reasons to pack your hiking boots on a trip to Cape Verde, with trails criss-crossing the islands and options for every level of fitness and enthusiasm. The guided trek up Monte Verde, the highest peak on Sao Vicente, is a good choice for beginners and families. The path is paved all the way to the top and walkers are rewarded with stirring views over the island and out to sea once they’ve completed their two-hour ascent. Near the summit is a sweet little teahouse, the Cabana de Cha do Monte Verde, which brews tea using plants collected from the mountain.

The 8 best places to visit in Cape Verde

Julia, Travel journalist

Among the ten islands that make up the archipelago of Cape Verde, the variety of landscapes and activities on offer mean there really is something for everyone! Fans of lazy days and long sandy beaches can choose between Sal, perhaps the most touristy island, or Boa Vista, "the island of dunes", a must-see not only for its beaches, but also for the Viana desert, one of the seven wonders of Cape Verde. Looking for something unspoilt and less crowded? Then head to Brava, the smallest island of the archipelago, or Sao Nicolau, an authentic island known for the kindness of its local population. If hiking is more your thing, then Cape Verde has to be put at the top of your must-see list: climb the steep slopes of Pico de Fogo, the volcano-guardian of Fogo island; or opt for a trekking adventure on Santa Antao’s walking trails , through beautiful natural landscapes, combing lush valleys and volcanic deserts. Cape Verde is also brimming with historical and cultural heritage, which can be seen in its population, gastronomy and traditional songs and dances. Not to be missed, the cultural capital of Cape Verde, Mindelo, on the island of Sao Vicente, offering visitors a good overview of Cape Verdean culture, a mixture of Portuguese, African and Brazilian influences.

Tourist attractions

Our selection of must-see places.

Sao Nicolau

Sao Nicolau

Still relatively unknown to tourists, the island of Sao Nicolau is often overshadowed by its neighbour, Sao Vicente. But this has its advantages as the island has preserved its authentic character and a natural environment. Agriculture is the predominant industry on the island. While pretty arid on the east side, much of the island is still dedicated to terraced crops: sugar cane, cassava, fruits, vegetables ... the island has very fertile soil. Due to its volcanic history, there are also some black sandy beaches. However, the most wonderful thing about Sao Nicolau is the kindness of its people. They are very welcoming, and it is also one of the few places in the archipelago where you can uncover traditional Cape Verdean customs and songs. The island is also a gem for hikers, who can roam the most beautiful natural sites of the island on foot, such as the Faja valley or the Monte Gordo natural park, the highest point on the island.

Brava

Hidden just behind Fogo is Brava, the smallest and most southern island in the archipelago. Nicknamed "the island of flowers" by the locals, the island remains seldom visited by tourists, because it is very isolated. However, it offers beautiful walking opportunities. Accessible only by boat from Fogo, this small piece of land is home to a warm and welcoming population and enchanting landscapes that can be discovered during the various walks. From Fontainhas pico, the highest point of the island with superb ocean panoramas, down to the natural swimming pools of Faja de Agua and then onwards to the island’s capital, Nova Sintra, perfect for a day visit, with lively nightime entertainment. You can also stop in the charming fishing village of Furna.

Sao Vicente

Sao Vicente

As the little sister island to Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, easily accessible thanks to its airport, is also renowned for its hiking trails, but also for the charm of its typical villages. A must-see, Mindelo, the cultural capital of the island, vibrates constantly to the rhythm of Portuguese, African and Brazilian rhythms. It has a festive atmosphere day and night, which has earned the island the nickname "Little Brazil". Mindelo is the birthplace of the singer Cesaria Evora, a proud ambassador of Cape Verde. While lovers of hiking can explore the volcanic terrain of the island, including the Monte Verde national park, this very windy island also has beaches that will delight surfing enthusiasts.

Santo Antão

Santo Antão

As the second largest island in the Cape Verde archipelago, Santo Antao is often included in adventure and trekking tours due to its variety of hiking trails winding between valleys and mountains. Volcanic in origin, the island offers visitors a multitude of landscapes: from arid and desert scenery in the south to green valleys, favourable to agriculture, in the north. A paradise for hikers, who can discover the island's must-see places by following its marked trails, from the lush Paul Valley to the tropical valleys synonymous with the Ribeira Grande region. A trip to Santo Antao is also an opportunity to meet the locals, and discover the rural potential of the island, with fields of sugar cane, tropical trees and sweet potatoes. And whatever you do, don’t leave without tasting the local rum, reputed to be the best in the country!

Santiago

As the largest island of the Cape Verde archipelago, Santiago is also the most populated with a quarter of the Cape Verdean population settled in the capital, Praia. While the city does not host major tourist attractions, it is nevertheless worth a visit if only to enjoy the atmosphere and traditional music, especially in the evenings, where several bars and nightclubs will delight the night owls amongst you. Nicknamed "the African", the island brings together a beautiful diversity of landscapes: volcanic peaks, arid deserts, deep valleys, beautiful beaches of black sand, but also white sand such as that of Tarrafal beach, and small historic villages such as Cidade Velha.

Sal

Together with the island of Boa Vista, Sal is famous for its long sandy beaches, the most beautiful of which is the 8km-long Santa Maria beach. The island is an ideal destination for lovers of relaxation and water sports, including kitesurfing, and has benefitted from the most tourism development. Besides its beautiful beaches, some excursions are not to be missed: first of all, there’s the Pedra de Lume salt mines, located in the hollow of a now extinct volcano, and also the azur-blue natural pools of Buracona. Also worthy of a visit is the charming town of Santa Maria, home to cobbled streets lined with small traditional restaurants, and craft shops.

Fogo

The main attraction of the island is, of course, its majestic volcano, Mount Fogo, located in the centre of the island, and from which it takes its name. Its name signifies "fire". While the last eruption dates back to 1995, the volcano is still active. The bravest amongst you may attempt to climb this impressive conical mountain covered with ash, which offers breathtaking lunar landscapes on the caldera, before finally reaching the summit which rises to over 2800 metres above sea level. During a stay on Fogo, the island’s main town, Sao Felipe, should not be missed; this is a quiet city and the starting point for climbing the Fogo volcano. The less adventurous can choose to wander around at the foot of the volcano, along the black sandy beaches and around the villages perched on the sides of the volcano, where miraculously, the inhabitants manage to cultivate vineyards and coffee plantations.

Boa Vista

Of all the Cape Verde islands, Boa Vista, the island dubbed "dune island", is home to many treasures. With the development of tourism, Boa Vista is attracting more and more visitors in search of sun and paradise beaches. Indeed, the island has the most beautiful beaches in the archipelago, such as the unmissable Santa Monica beach, a huge strip of white sand where lovers of lazy days will be in their element. But Boa Vista is far from being limited to its dream coastline: to the north of the island is one of the seven wonders of Cape Verde: the Viana desert or "the crumb of the Sahara", as the locals call it here. A mini dune desert of dazzling clarity, and a playground prized for its superb quad rides. Finally, to discover a little more local culture, don’t leave without having visited its capital, Sal Rei, and the other small charming towns dotted around the island.

Paradise for summer lovers

The island of Sal is one of the world's most popular beach destinations. It's easy to see why: crystal-clear turquoise waters, ivory sand beaches, mild climate year-round, a diverse range of water sports activities, hospitable people and comfort food.

1-ilha-do-sal-cabo-verde.jpg

Cape Verdeans believe in the power of community, as reflected in the expression " na nôs tera, nôs tudo ê família " - In our land, we are all family.

It is this 'morabeza' that beckons thousands every year, searching for that profound sense of kinship that transcends mere blood ties, creating a collective bond that fosters a spirit of unity and support between the natives of the archipelago and those who arrive.

History, Geography, and Culture of Sal

Unveiled by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century, on December 3rd, 1460, the island became a pivotal stopover for ships voyaging between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, which endowed Sal with a melting pot of diversity.

The island's settlement truly burgeoned in the 19th century with the exploitation of the salt pans in Pedra de Lume, commencing in 1804 .

The island's volcanic genesis was instrumental for the successful exploitation at Pedra de Lume. Salt and calcite subsequently became pivotal elements driving the economic development of the island

1-salinas-de-pedra-de-lume-ilha-do-sal-cabo-verde.jpg

Covering a total expanse of 215 square kilometers, the terrain is predominantly flat, with the highest peak being Monte Grande, rising a mere 406 meters above sea level.

Sal is an island sculpted by the erosive forces of nature.

The southern part, sandier and arid, is characterized by dunes that stretch to the horizon, embellished by pristine white sand beaches, among which Praias de Santa Maria and Ponta Preta stand out prominently .

To the north, in Terra Boa , some areas of marshland enable agricultural endeavors.

Positioned at 16.7414° N, 22.9333° W, it currently hosts a population of approximately 35,000 individuals.

Its capital is the town of Espargos, in close proximity to which lies the Amílcar Cabral Airport .

2-aeroporto-amilcar-cabral-ilha-do-sal-cabo-verde.jpg

A Dash of Heritage and Culture

Espargos and Santa Maria are the cultural heartbeats of the island .

The city of Espargos, the island's capital , though not a major tourist hub, is a beauty with its harmonious squares, vibrantly painted facades, and pedestrian-friendly streets that beckon the visitor to wander.

Within its bounds, one can discover the island's museum, showcasing exhibits on Sal's history and art.

In the town of Santa Maria, caressed by an 8 km stretch of pristine white sandy beach , a visit to the bustling local market is a must. Here, one can immerse oneself in a plethora of fresh produce, authentic handicrafts, and a truly indigenous experience.

Also deserving a mention is the verdant oasis of the Pachamama Eco Park's botanical garden.

The Santa Maria Beach Music Festival held in September is an unmissable extravaganza .

Throughout the year, religious feasts take precedence, such as:

  • Santa Cruz,
  • Santo António,
  • Santa Ana, and
  • Nossa Senhora da Piedade.

3-ilha-do-sal-cabo-verde.jpg

The island's natural treasures are famed and include:

  • Serra Negra,
  • Pedra de Lume salt flats,
  • Morrinho de Açúcar,
  • Ponta Preta Dunes,
  • Murdeira Bay, and
  • Rabo de Junco (Lion's Mountain).

Buracona is the gem of the island's West Coast.

The Buracona Lava Pool, flanked by rugged cliffs, adds to the locale's breathtaking and picturesque aura.

Born from volcanic rocks and crystal-clear turquoise seawater that gleams in the sunlight, it's a magnet for those longing for a refreshing dip and to catch a glimpse of the Olho da Buracona .

This underwater tunnel, 22 meters deep, reflects an intense blue hue when sunlit, shaping what appears as a "blue eye", its renowned moniker.

The most opportune time for an "Olho Azul" visit is midday when the sun's direct rays create a mesmerizing illusion.

ilha-sal-Buracona.jpg

Serra Negra is not just a nature reserve. It also boasts a marine protection zone extending 300m off the coast and serves as a sanctuary for various bird species.

The viewpoint atop offers a panoramic vision of a large portion of the island.

At its base, fossilized dunes stand as a testament to its geological significance.

Pedra de Lume Salt Flats

This is the source of the illustrious product for which the island gets its name: salt!

Nestled at the base of an extinct volcano crater, it was once the island's primary industry with salt extraction commencing in the 1800s.

Its production and export persist today.

Guided tours offer visitors the unique experience of floating in these medicinal waters. It's noteworthy that these salt flats are among the top national tourist attractions, frequented by both locals and foreigners for therapeutic, tourist, historical, scientific, and heritage reasons.

Since 2003, the Pedra Lume salt flats have been designated a protected national landscape and, from 2014, recognized as a natural, historical, and cultural heritage site of Cape Verde.

pedra-lume-sal-caboverde.jpg

Morrinho de Açúcar

A natural monument of volcanic origin, its uniqueness is as captivating as its beauty.

It stands as remnants of a volcanic chimney, soaring amid a vast plain.

These geological formations exhibit unparalleled prismatic disjunctions.

4-morinho-acucar-ilha-do-sal-cabo-verde.jpg

Ponta Preta Dunes beckon for serene walks.

They serve as a venue for aquatic leisure activities, like surfing, and host the international windsurfing championship. It's also a nesting ground for turtles.

The Murdeira Bay and Rabo de Junco nature reserves

This natural harbor, with its tranquil waves and slightly warmer waters, serves as a preferred habitat for various marine birds and turtles that feed and nest there (from May to October).

Seasonally (between March and May), the rorqual whales, an endangered species of immense global conservation importance, grace its waters.

This site seamlessly merges the clearest and warmest beaches on the island (ideal for swimming and snorkeling) with the majestic Monte Leão (Rabo de Junco).

A holistic monument of unparalleled natural beauty, it's a must-visit, especially in the evening, to bask in the island of Sal's enchanting sunset .

A Dash of Heritage and Culture

With its vigorous currents, this beach beckons one to ponder upon the sea and the sunset, preferably with a glass of grogue in hand as the day bids farewell.

For those with an adventurous spirit and a passion for water sports, set your compass towards Kite Beach .

Undoubtedly, it ranks amongst the world's most famed beaches for sports such as Kite Surfing, WindSurfing, and Surfing.

In fact, the beach hosts the acclaimed World Kite Surfing Circuit from November to March.

To awaken on Serra Negra Beach and witness the sunrise is among the magical experiences Sal bestows .

This serene and hushed beach is a must-visit for those yearning for an escape from the hustle of city life or crowded shores.

Serra Negra's waters are teeming with fish and shellfish , a genuine sanctuary for fishing aficionados.

A shallow lagoon cradling lava rocks beneath its surface .

Situated on the island's northeastern coast, near the village of Pedra de Lume, it's the sole place on the island where one can behold the magnificent lemon sharks in their natural habitat.

Being harmless and deeply curious, these sharks become a magnet for those eager to swim and connect with marine creatures.
