Carnival Spirit Ship Review: An Oldie But A Goodie!

Carnival Spirit's Green Thunder waterslide

While the Carnival Spirit isn’t Carnival Cruises’ newest ship, with a few refurbishments (the last one in 2018), it provides a fantastic cruise experience for families and those on a budget.

A Spirit-class vessel, the Carnival Spirit provides guests with twelve decks of venues, which are easy to access in their well-laid-out design.

Initially, this vessel provided sailings in North America. Then, it repositioned to Australia and offered South Pacific itineraries from Brisbane. With cruising uncertainty in Australia, Carnival offers Alaska and Mexican Riviera sailings in summer and Caribbean itineraries in winter.

I sailed on the Carnival Spirit during one of her repositioning crossings. While I didn’t complete the entire journey to Australia, I cruised the first leg, a 12-day cruise  from Vancouver to Hawaii .

So, this is my Carnival Spirit review of the vessel, including stateroom, entertainment venues, and dining options.

The Carnival Spirit Deck Plan

With a capacity of almost 2,124 guests, Carnival has packed a lot into its mid-sized ship. I liked the ship’s design and found it easy to navigate from one area to another.

Unlike the  Carnival Glory ship , which has its galley in its middle, the Spirit’s deck flow is much better.

Jungle Interior Promenade

Some areas I especially liked included hidden places not always found by guests. The Jungle Interior Promenade on either side of the theatre was a great place to read a book or enjoy some quiet time.

I found a great hot tub rarely used (or located) by other cruise passengers in the spa.

The jogging track on deck 11 didn’t run by the loungers by the pool, which is sometimes problematic.

The Spirit’s Promenade deck has a partial outdoor circuit. However, it has a large outdoor walking path that connects to an indoor area called the “Jungle interior promenade.”

Like most Carnival vessels, the Spirit dons a colorful décor. While the wild décor didn’t bother me, those tacky birds featured by the pools just didn’t fit the overall design.

Weird bird sculpture next to the pool

She looks almost brand new with her recent refurbishment and new exterior hull color to match that of the Mardi Gras. Let’s hope on the next upgrade, they refresh the outdated staterooms.

The Carnival Spirit has a great deck plan, making it easy to find venues.

My 4K Interior Cabin Review

Launched in 2001, the vessel doesn’t have the overly large suites or lavish staterooms found on newer ships. In fact, its largest cabin, the Grand Suite, is relatively small at 300 sq. feet.

While newer vessels have mostly cabins with verandas, the majority of Carnival Spirit cabins fall in the interior and ocean view categories.

Even though the rooms are dated, I enjoyed the larger space with plenty of storage. Carnival Spirit’s interior, outside, and balcony cabins measure 185 sq. feet, which is quite sizable by today’s standards.

With plenty of connecting staterooms, families can choose two rooms next to each other and enjoy the luxury of double the space.

Carnival Spirit's waterslide, serenity pool and Guy's burger

Unique to the Spirit-class ships, Carnival Cruise Line describes its 4K cabin as an interior with a window offering an obstructed view. I booked one of these cabins. In reality, it’s a Juliette balcony where you can’t step outside.

I appreciated the larger space as I’ve seen the 140 sq. foot inside cabins on competitor lines. While they call them interior staterooms, I call the 140 sq. foot spaces shoeboxes!

The 4K rooms on deck 4, or the main deck, have a set of French doors that you can open. Since the lifeboats are positioned outside the rooms, you don’t have any views, but you can enjoy the fresh air, daylight and hear the ocean waves.

If you dislike air-conditioning as I do, you’ll appreciate the ability to turn off the AC and enjoy ocean breezes.

While guests can find a few of these 4K cabins next to the lifeboats, some offer ocean views. Staterooms 4122, 4123, 4140, 4141, 4148, 4149, 4196, 4197, and 4203 fall between the lifeboats.

These cabins sell out fast, but I lucked out on booking 4149 after someone canceled their booking. While I prefer to book a balcony simply for the fresh air, I could enjoy the fresh air without paying for a balcony cabin.

Cabin 4149 has staterooms above and an open Promenade area below. I found the cabin very quiet during the cruise.

My 4K inside cabin had a full-sized couch so I could watch TV from the sofa or the bed.

The bathroom was also outdated, and the shower had the curtain that we all love to hate.

Outdoor Spaces

The Carnival Spirit has three pools on deck 9 or the Lido deck. The Sun Forward Pool and the Dome Main Pool are located back-to-back in the center of the deck, with a couple of hot tubs.

With a sliding dome to cover one of the pools, it’s an ideal vessel for cold-weather destinations like Alaska. The Blue Iguana Tequila bar and Red Frog Rum bar sit between them and are always busy with guests.

Serenity adult-only area

Plenty of loungers are around the pools, and I never had to worry about finding an empty one. At the aft, the Serenity Pool is reserved for adults only.

The large Serenity area has its own bar and always hops with live entertainment. In fact, it was my favorite place to hang out on the ship, especially on sea days. The comfy loungers are a great place to read a book or relax.

Carnival Waterworks on deck 11 provides entertainment for hours for the little ones. Next to the Waterworks, two waterslides offer fun for children and adults alike. The yellow slide provides a calmer ride for the young ones.

However, the  “Green Thunder”  swirling slide whips guests out over the ocean at 65 km an hour. It’s the fastest slide at sea and promises to get your heart racing. I loved the sign underneath the slide that says, “Scare yourself silly.”

When I first saw the slide on embarkation day, I couldn’t wait to try it. And let me tell you, I was with the minority. The thought of the floor dropping away and having the person freefall down the slide at high-speed scared passengers away.

With cool days and a bit of wind, I had to wait until day four of my cruise for the Green Thunder to open. With only two other guests willing to try, I had multiple runs on the Green Thunder.

Carnival Spirit's Green Thunder waterslide

You’ll find the jogging track, mini-golf, and sports court, two decks up from the pools.

Dining And Food Choices

Guests aboard Carnival Spirit cruises have many options for meals. The Empire Restaurant, the main sit-down venue, offers complimentary food choices.

The La Playa Grille and the Ol’ Fashioned Bbq on the higher decks offer buffet-style selections if you prefer something more casual.

Like many other lines, the dress code is quite relaxed. Even on optional formal nights, expect fewer guests to dress their best.

The Empire Restaurant on the Carnival Spirit

The Lido restaurant is a casual buffet-style dining venue that serves a wide array of dishes throughout the day. It offers a variety of cuisines, including international fare, comfort food, salads, soups, and desserts.

Also, it featured a pizza station and tastes of the nation. The featured food changed each day, offering cuisine from different countries.

The Blue Iguana Cantina offers a taste of Mexican cuisine with a selection of tacos and burritos. Passengers can choose from a range of fillings, salsas, and toppings to create their own flavor combinations. The venue also serves freshly made tortillas and chips.

As with most Carnival ships that have undergone an upgrade, this vessel features Guy’s Burger Joint on the Lido deck. Created in partnership with Food Network’s Guy Fieri, Guy’s Burger Joint serves delicious, juicy burgers and hand-cut fries.

Guests can customize their burgers with a variety of toppings and sauces. While I don’t tend to eat burgers, Guy’s burgers are fresh and full of flavor. As someone with celiac, I was surprised I could order one gluten-free.

Guy Fieri's burger

Other complimentary venues include the Red Frog Pub, and pastries and sweet goods at the Fountain Café. Pizza and ice cream lovers can get pizza and soft-serve almost any time they want without a surcharge.

I ate most of my meals in the main dining room because it’s the safest place when  cruising with multiple food allergies.   My waiter was excellent and made daily recommendations.

He often brought things to the table that no one had ordered in an attempt to get everyone to experiment with flavors. I tried the frog legs, alligator, and escargot during that cruise.

While these items were pre-pandemic, it’s unlikely you’ll find such unusual food options now.

You can choose from Bonsai Sushi Express, Nouveau Restaurant, and The Chef’s Table for those who prefer specialty dining. Although the Chef’s Table comes with sticker shock, the meal is gratifying.

Located on deck 11, the Nouveau Steak House charges USD 38 for an   appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert. I ate here one evening, and the steaks were done to perfection, and the meal was well worth the surcharge.

With windows all facing the ocean, you can enjoy your steak dinner with sea views.

Bar Options

The Carnival Spirit features an array of bars, whether you’re looking for an indoor or outdoor venue. Outside, there are plenty of places to get a drink. Choices include the Blue Iguana Tequila Bar and Red Frog Rum Bar on deck 9.

The RedFrog Pub is a Caribbean-themed bar serving up a variety of tropical cocktails and beers, including the popular RedFrog Ale. It’s a vibrant relaxing spot and especially popular in warmer destinations.

Shanghai Piano Bar

Deck 2 has the Red Frog Pub, Skybox Sports Bar, Louis XIV Casino, Alchemy Bar, and Shanghai Piano Bar one level up. The Alchemy Bar is a sophisticated venue where mixologists craft customized cocktails based on guests’ preferences.

For sports enthusiasts, the Sports Bar is the ideal spot to catch live games on large screens while enjoying a cold beer or a refreshing cocktail. It’s a lively atmosphere where guests can cheer for their favorite teams.

The Piano Bar offers a cozy and intimate setting with live piano performances. If you’re a fan of Billy Joel, Elton John, or other talented piano players, you can unwind and sing along while sipping on your favorite beverage.

If you prefer to try your luck at various gaming tables and slot machines, the Casino Bar is conveniently located nearby and will keep your glass filled.

Carnival Spirit's atrium

Although less spectacular than newer vessels, the atrium was a great place to hang out.

Should you purchase the USD 59.95 Cheers Beverage Package, you can enjoy drinks up to USD 20 each. These include cocktails, wine by the glass, beer, specialty coffees, and Zero-proof frozen mocktails.

However, you cannot use your package on bottles of wine, gangway beverages, drinks in souvenir cups, or stock your stateroom mini-bar.

Spa And Fitness Center

The spa on the Carnival Spirit offers a tranquil retreat where guests can indulge in a variety of rejuvenating treatments. You can choose from soothing massages to invigorating facials.

Treatments also include teeth whitening, acupuncture, body wraps, exfoliating scrubs, and detoxifying therapies to enhance your spa experience further.

Like most spas at sea, expect to pay up to double what you pay on land. If you’re not ready to splurge on an expensive treatment, you can unwind in the steam room or sauna, which are complimentary.

The spa's hot tub

The saunas and steam rooms are especially welcoming after a day of glacier viewing in Alaska.

Additionally, a well-equipped fitness center is available for those seeking to maintain their exercise routine while onboard.

Carnival Spirit Entertainment

While Carnival markets its line as having “fun ships,” the Spirit was way more fun than some other vessels. There was no end to dancing on the dining room tables and getting the guests to follow along in their silliness.

In fact, I still remember most of the dining room getting up and dancing to YMCA and doing the Macarena.

The fun continues outside the dining room with the Lip Sync Battle, Love and Marriage show, and the popular Hasbro Game Show.

On the pool deck, the fun continued with the men’s hairy chest contest and another contest that challenged guests to build a vessel to float across the pool while carrying cans of beer.

On my warm weather sailing, I often enjoyed the sounds of a live band on the top deck and live music in the atrium.

The entertainment never ends on a Carnival cruise, and being on the Spirit was no different. From the sail-away party to the deck party in Hawaii, I enjoyed it all.

During my 12-day cruise, there were three formal or elegant cruise nights. You can expect two on a seven-night sailing.

On the last night, guests could dress up or wear Hawaiian attire. After all, we were in Hawaii. Almost all passengers chose to follow the Aloha dress code, and it was nice to see the colorful clothing.

The ship may feature other themed nights such as Silent White Hot Night, Superhero Music Party, or 80s Rock’n’Glow in other destinations.

Pharaoh’s Palace Lounge

I attended most Playlist Production shows in the Pharaoh’s Palace Lounge, and they did not disappoint. Afterward, I enjoyed the late-night comedy at the Punchliner Comedy Club below the theater. The comedian was so impressive that the venue filled up fast.

Around the ship, there were live bands, piano playing, strums from a guitar, and singers. The choice of music varied, so there was something for everyone’s tastes.

Other Venues

The Dancin’ Dance Club keeps the party-goers dancing on decks 1 and 2. Check out the Cherry on the Top candy store on deck 3 if you have a sweet tooth.

Deck 12, or the aft sun deck, features mini golf, which was rarely ever busy. Being an older ship, the Glory doesn’t have any of the characteristics of the more popular mega-ships.

However, you get what you pay for, and those vessels command higher prices.

Like all Carnival vessels, the Spirit has self-serve laundry rooms. While none of us likes to do laundry on vacation, they come in handy on long journeys.

Also, I can pack less and not worry about having overweight luggage at the airport with the ability to do laundry.

Kids Programs

Carnival is a family-friendly cruise line and provides kids programs for different age groups. Camp Carnival offers simple games, art supplies, and scavenger hunts for children aged two to eleven.

For young teens (aged 12 to 14), Circle “C” offers more hands-on sports, video games, pizza parties, movie nights, and more group interaction.

Camp Carnival kids area

Club 02 is more of a hang-out space for older teens aged 15 to 17. Here, they can chat, listen to music, or choose to play video games.

There are Dr. Seuss-themed events during the cruise, including the iconic breakfasts. Green eggs and ham, anyone? Children can take a Build-a-Bear workshop to make a special animal of their choice.

Around the ship, kids can enjoy a pool, waterslide, basketball court, and miniature golf.

Exceptional Staff

The biggest plus on this cruise was the Carnival staff. While all cruise line staff are trained to be courteous and helpful, I felt many gave exceptional service.

As a Celiac, I have to watch what I eat. However, my servers were always helpful and ensured my food never contained any allergens.

There were also a couple of photographers who were terrific at portrait pictures. While most cruise passengers shy away from photographers, I like to get at least one photo from each cruise.

One photographer did such an excellent job capturing my “best side,” and I ended up going home with eight large prints.

Pros And Cons Of The Carnival Spirit

Carnival Spirit Lido deck

Here are the hits and misses for me:

  • Budget-friendly and a great option if you’re looking for a cruise ship without the bells and whistles.
  • Larger staterooms, which can easily accommodate more than two.
  • Complimentary steam rooms and saunas, which have been removed on newer vessels.
  • 4K cabins make an excellent alternative to a balcony stateroom.
  • Inexpensive to eat at the Nouveau Steakhouse.
  • Domed pool, ideal for cold weather areas.
  • You don’t have to pay to use the serenity retreat.
  • Water slides and Waterworks are great for families.
  • Shower curtain instead of a glass shower door.
  • Onboard venues and cabins need to be updated.
  • Few options for specialty restaurants.
  • No wraparound Promenade deck for those who like to walk.

Final Thoughts

The Spirit is popular for budget-conscious travelers seeking a memorable cruise experience.

With larger accommodations, families will benefit from more storage when cruising with more than two to a stateroom.

Being an older vessel, she doesn’t offer the new venues of the latest vessels; however, if you’re focused on your destination, this ship provides exceptional value for money.

The cruise line understands the importance of providing budget-friendly options without compromising quality or entertainment.

On board, guests can enjoy various complimentary activities, including live performances, poolside fun, and delicious dining options. There is no pressure to upsell specialty dining, racing cars, and other fee-for-use, like on competitor lines.

I enjoyed the Carnival Spirit cruise ship so much that I later took a Mexican Riviera cruise on her sister’s ship, the Carnival Miracle . So, if you’re seeking a budget-friendly cruise with tons of fun, this “fun ship” delivers.

If you reside in North America, you can enjoy the Spirit before she repositions back to Australia again.

Happy travels ~ Karen

Carnival Spirit cruise ship, Waterworks and Serenity pool

Wednesday 13th of July 2022

I went on the carnival spirit in 2019 was so excited to get an upgrade right underneath the night club thumping away until the early hours very dissapointing

Forever Karen

If you're sensitive to noise, it's best to opt out of upgrades. A cruise line's idea of an upgrade is a higher deck but not necessarily in a good location.

(deck 2) The Taste Bar was replaced with the Art Gallery (moved from deck 3). The Shore Excursions desk was renamed Carnival Adventures.

(deck 3) The Chippendale Library & Internet Cafe (23-seat, 24-hour open) and the Wedding Chapel (30-seat venue) were replaced with a new video arcade The Warehouse. Carnival Spirit deck plan changes 2018 refurbishment review

During the ship's drydock in 2018 (May-June, in Singapore ) were upgraded the entertainment (available at new clubs for youth activities - kids-only arts-crafts area ("SoulPlay") and teens-only area ("Warehouse Arcade").

Other changes included:

  • redesigned retail area - new duty-free shopping brands - Clinique, Lacoste, Quay Australia, Seafolly, Swarovski, Swatch
  • redesigned Photo Gallery - Pixels Digital Photo Gallery - upgraded kiosk allowing passengers to view then purchase photos through smartphones and iPads
  • updated Fitness Centre (latest training equipment)

In 2022 February, Carnival Spirit was drydocked in Dubai UAE , mainly for general maintenance works, as well as for changing the old livery with the fleet's new one (blue-red-white).

In 2017, on the Australia-based Carnival Spirit was introduced new kids programming that includes new onboard activities, games, themed parties.

  • On the ship were introduced an inflatable bocce court and giant-sized board games (Cranium, Trivial Pursuit, Guess Who).
  • Another 2017 addition is the Cluedo (aka Clue) murder mystery game that is a group activity involving 2-6 players. At the beginning of each cruise, costumed characters present their alibis, and the players attempt to solve the crime mystery through clues given to them throughout the cruise.
  • New themed entertainment events are the shows "80s Rock" (music-themed), "Glow Night" (fashion-themed) and "Lip Sync Battle" (a musical competition involving choreography, costumes, and stage sets).

"Carnival Hub" app

In 2016, Carnival Australia introduced on Carnival Spirit the "Carnival Hub" app. It provides information on the ship's daily scheduled activities onboard ("Fun Times" newsletter). Among the app's functions are:

  • "favorites" - passengers can bookmark the events they like (shows, promotions, etc)
  • real-time onboard account balance checking
  • reminder for attending chosen events
  • making onboard reservations and bookings (spa, dining/specialty restaurants, lounges, etc)
  • current itinerary information (ports of call, searchable deck plans / with highlighted attractions)
  • The Carnival Hub app (costs AUD 9) also has a "chat" function for connecting with your family and friends on the ship. The function automatically adds to a contact list all passengers traveling together. The unique ID number allows adding new friends to chat contacts.
  • Booked passengers can download "Carnival Hub" online (for free), set up a profile, enter the next cruise date of departure, and the app starts to countdown. The app can also be downloaded while on the ship (for free).
  • The ship's "Fun Times" newsletter on paper is also available but in a reduced-size format. This, along with the Carnival Hub's introduction results in around 50% reduction in paper usage.

Cruise ship Internet

In May 2016, Carnival Australia introduced faster and cheaper internet and social media Internet packages on the Australia-based ships Carnival Legend and Carnival Spirit. The improved internet access offers increased bandwidth and speed.

  • The value package (costs AUD 30 per day) offers unlimited Internet.
  • The (faster) premium package (cost AUD 50 per day) allows passengers to make Skype video calls.
  • The new "social media package" (cost AUD 15 per day) offers unlimited access to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter.

If you’ve wanted to sail Carnival Splendor or Carnival Spirit but haven’t had the chance, your time has come. The cruise line announced late last week that Carnival Splendor will join Spirit in North America in the coming months.

carnival cruise ships splendor spirit

Last week, Carnival announced that Spirit would be leaving the South Pacific through at least fall 2023. Shortly after, the operator canceled Carnival Splendor ‘s down under voyages through fall 2022.

As of Monday morning, it hasn’t been announced where in North America Carnival will homeport Splendor .

Canceled Carnival Australia Sailings

  • Carnival Splendor sailings through and including September 26, 2022
  • Carnival Spirit sailings through and including October 5, 2023

A note on Carnival Australia’s website says , “As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we are sorry to share the news that Carnival Cruise Line is pausing operations for selected Australian sailings departing from 15 March 2020 through to and including 26 Sep 2022.”

Carnival Spirit was based in Brisbane, Australia, and Splendor in Sydney, sailing South Pacific voyages.

The Australian government has kept its international ban on cruise ships in place since March 2020 and doesn’t look to be letting up anytime soon. Its current ban holds through May 2022. The constant return-to-cruise extensions are forcing cruise operators to sail towards more lucrative waters.

Carnival Spirit Already En Route

As of Monday morning, Carnival Splendor is off the coast of Dubai. According to the cruise ship tracking website CruiseMapper , Carnival Spirit is in the Gulf of Aden, en route to transit the Suez Canel. The ship will likely crew up once in the Mediterranean Sea before making the transatlantic voyage to Jacksonville, Florida to restart operations on March 7.

In another move, Carnival announced last week that both Carnival Sensation and Carnival Ecstasy would be put out to pasture. Sensation will not be returning to cruising, and Ecstasy will cruise from Mobile, Alabama starting March 5 through the middle of October 2022. The cruise port then will be without a ship until Carnival makes operational adjustments in 2023. The replacement has not been named.

Carnival Spirit Sets Sail on 14-Night Cruise to Alaska

  • May 2, 2024

Carnival Spirit

Upon completing a repositioning cruise to the West Coast in late April , the Carnival Spirit started its 2024 summer program in Alaska with a 14-night voyage.

Cruising roundtrip from Seattle, the two-week cruise is part of Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Journeys program and features less usual destinations in the region.

After setting sail on April 23, the itinerary includes visits to Ketchikan, Skagway, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Valdez and Seward.

Before returning to Seattle, the Carnival Spirit is also set to offer scenic cruising at the Hubbard Glacier and the Tracy Arm Fjord, in addition to making a visit to Victoria, in Canada’s British Columbia.

According to Carnival Cruise Line, the Carnival Journeys are part of a limited series of special sailings “made to amaze passengers.”

The voyages sail to less-traveled routes, the company added, and feature great destinations, as well as enriching experiences onboard and a classic cruising fare.

Continuing its summer program in Alaska and Canada, the Carnival Spirit is set to kick off a series of week-long cruises in the region on May 7.

The ship’s regular itinerary sails roundtrip from Seattle and features visits to Ketchikan, Juneau, Victoria and Skagway.

The seven-night cruises feature scenic cruising at the Tracy Arm Fjord, in addition to one day cruising the Pacific Ocean.

Before completing its summer season in the region, the Carnival Spirit is set to offer a second 14-night cruise to Alaska and Canada on September 10, 2024.

With a similar itinerary, the Carnival Journey will be followed by a 15-night cruise to Hawaii. Also part of the Carnival Journeys program, the itinerary sails roundtrip from Seattle and features a visit to Victoria, Canada.

On October 9, the Spirit wraps up its schedule on the West Coast with a 16-night repositioning cruise to New Orleans ahead of a winter season sailing from Mobile.

The 8 classes of Carnival Cruise Line ships, explained

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Thinking about a cruise on a Carnival Cruise Line ship? You have a lot of options.

By the summer of 2024, Carnival will have 27 vessels in service — all currently available to book. That’s more ships than any other major cruise line except Royal Caribbean , which will have 28 vessels in service by the summer of 2024.

In general, Carnival ships are large but, aside from two exceptions, they’re not giants by today’s standards. Over the past two years, Carnival has begun operating its first two truly giant ships in years — the 181,808-ton, 5,282-passenger Mardi Gras and the 183,521-ton Carnival Celebration .

Other than these two ships, Carnival’s biggest vessel is the 4,090-passenger Carnival Venezia , which measures just 135,225 tons. That’s about 40% smaller than the biggest ships operated by Royal Caribbean .

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Six of the 27 vessels Carnival will operate by the summer of 2024 measure less than 100,000 tons, which makes them almost mid-size by today’s cruise ship standards.

This is a notable change for the brand from just a couple of decades ago. There was a time when Carnival operated some of the biggest cruise ships in the world. However, for many years, it has held back from following rivals such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises in building ever-bigger ships. Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration are now the only Carnival ships on the list of the world’s 50 biggest cruise vessels.

The arrival of Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration has marked a major turning point for the line. The two vessels rank 15th and 13th, respectively, on the list of the world’s largest cruise ships — the first Carnival ships to crack the Top 20 in quite a few years. They are 35% bigger than the line’s next-biggest ship. One more ship in the series — Carnival Jubilee — will arrive in late 2023.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

The good news for those of you trying to get a handle on all the options within the Carnival fleet is that the line’s ships can easily be bunched into just eight groups of vessels that have similar amenities. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

Each of these groups — known as “classes” in cruise industry lingo — is made up of ships that were constructed around the same time with the same basic design.

An introduction to Carnival Cruise Line ships

As mentioned above, Carnival’s ships can be broken down into eight distinct groups or classes. A key detail about Carnival ships is that there are a lot of similarities from class to class within the Carnival fleet.

Unlike Royal Caribbean and some other cruise lines, Carnival doesn’t always drastically change the design of its ships from class to class.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival Cruise Line

Instead, Carnival usually takes an incremental approach to design changes for its new classes of ships. You’ll find a lot in common between the Vista class and Dream class, for instance. These two classes aren’t all that different in feel from the earlier Splendor and Conquest classes of ships, though they are a bit bigger.

That said, Carnival is in the midst of a major change in its philosophy on ship design. Its new Excel-class vessels — which first debuted in 2021 with the arrival of Mardi Gras — are far bigger than its earlier ships. These ships also have a lot of new features and amenities (including the first-ever roller coaster on a cruise ship — and, no, we’re not making that up).

Related: The 4 new giants of the cruise world — and how to book them

For many years, Carnival steered clear of the big ship trends in the industry. Executives thought the ever-bigger vessels being deployed by such lines as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises were too big to make for an enjoyable cruise experience.

Now, Carnival is switching gears — no doubt because the giant ships unveiled by some other lines have been enormously popular with cruisers.

At Carnival, as at other lines, the biggest ships in the fleet have the most amenities, eateries, lounges, bars and deck-top attractions than the smaller ships. This can be a huge plus for travelers who like to have a lot of options when vacationing.

However, Carnival’s biggest ships also sail with more passengers, which can be a turnoff if you’re the kind of traveler who likes a more intimate experience.

In general, Carnival’s biggest and most amenity-packed ships are its newest ships. If you’re looking for a cruise experience with the most possible onboard activities and venues, you’ll want to steer toward the vessels in Carnival’s new Excel class and its relatively young Vista and Dream classes.

If cruising in a more intimate environment is your preference, you’ll want to look at some of Carnival’s older classes of ships including the Spirit and Fantasy classes.

The Carnival fleet is scheduled to grow over the next year with two more new vessels. As noted above, the line has ordered a third Excel-class ship (Carnival Jubilee) that will be ready to sail in December 2023.

In addition, the line will begin operating a ship currently in the fleet of its sister line Costa Cruises — Costa Firenze — in May 2024. It’ll be renamed Carnival Firenze and sail from Los Angeles.

Excel class

Ships in class: Mardi Gras (2021), Carnival Celebration (2022) and Carnival Jubilee (coming December 2023).

Size: 181,808 to 183,521 tons.

If you’re in the “bigger is better” camp when it comes to cruise ships, this is the Carnival class for you.

At a bit over 180,000 tons, Carnival’s three new Excel-class vessels — one of which, Carnival Jubilee, is still under construction — are 35% bigger than the line’s next-biggest ships and offer more eateries, lounges, bars and deck-top attractions than any other ships in the Carnival fleet by far.

Designed to take Carnival’s “fun ship” shtick to a new level, the ships are so big that, as noted above, they have room for roller coasters on their top decks — a cruise industry first. They also have a far broader array of suites than earlier Carnival vessels.

Among the new dining venues on the ships are the first Emeril Lagasse restaurant at sea, as well as the first Big Chicken eatery at sea. (Big Chicken is a chain created by basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, who also serves as a Carnival spokesperson.)

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Carnival cruise

In addition to featuring a roller coaster, Mardi Gras was the first ship from a North America-based line designed to operate on liquefied natural gas. The fuel is touted as being cleaner than traditional ship fuel.

One caveat to keep in mind if you’re thinking of booking an Excel-class ship: They sail with a very large number of people. If being around crowds bothers you, these may not be the ships for you. The vessels are designed to hold a whopping 5,282 passengers at double occupancy. With every pullout sofa and pull-down bunk filled, they can hold up to 6,630 passengers.

Vista/Venezia class

Ships in class: Carnival Panorama (2019), Carnival Horizon (2018), Carnival Vista (2016), Carnival Venezia (2023) and Carnival Firenze (coming in 2024).

Size: 133,596 to 135,225 tons.

With the arrival of Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, the Vista-class and Venezia-class ships (so similar that we have combined them into one entry) are no longer the biggest and most amenity-packed ships in the Carnival fleet. Still, they offer a lot of options when it comes to eateries, bars, lounges and deck-top attractions — more than you’ll find on most other Carnival vessels.

All four vessels in the Vista and Venezia classes have water parks with waterslides on their top decks, as well as miniature golf courses, ropes courses and multiple pool areas. They’re also known for their pedal-powered, suspended-in-the-air SkyRide attractions.

Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon, which officially are Vista-class ships, also have Imax theaters — the first in the cruise industry. Carnival Panorama, also a Vista-class ship, instead has the first trampoline park ever put on a cruise ship , in a partnership with Sky Zone.

There’s also a smorgasbord of restaurants, bars and lounges on all of the vessels. Among the many offerings on these ships are Carnival’s first breweries at sea (on all the vessels except Carnival Venezia, which is officially known as a Venezia-class ship and has a few notable differences).

On Carnival Panorama and Carnival Horizon, Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse offers beer brewed on-site along with barbecue dishes designed by the Food Network’s Guy Fieri. On Carnival Vista, there’s a stand-alone brewery and a separate barbecue venue.

Other eateries on the ships include casual, Guy Fieri-designed Guy’s Burger Joint, Chipotle-like burrito spot BlueIguana Cantina (on Carnival Venezia, this is called Tomodoro and also serves a few Italian items), sushi outlets and steakhouses. Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama also feature Italian eatery Cucina Del Capitano, as well as JiJi Asian Kitchen, while Carnival Venezia has an Italian restaurant called Il Viaggio.

Carnival Horizon, Carnival Panorama and Carnival Venezia also have teppanyaki restaurants, and all four ships have dedicated chef’s tables located within their galleys.

Both the Vista-class and Venezia-class ships were built on the same basic design platform and are roughly the same size with similar layouts. But Carnival Venezia originally was built for Carnival’s Italy-based sister brand, Costa Cruises. As a result, it has a much stronger Italy theme and a few design differences. Still, enough is the same that for all practical purposes, it is a Vista-class ship in all but name. Hence our combining the two classes into one listing.

Related: Our thoughts after sailing on Carnival Venezia

The Vista-class ships were, notably, the first ships in the Carnival fleet to boast exclusive, keycard-restricted cabin areas — a trend that has been growing at many mass-market lines. There are two such areas on the three Vista-class ships: Havana Cabanas and Family Harbor, the latter of which is specifically geared toward families. Carnival Venezia has a keycard-restricted area called Terrazza Carnevale.

The water park area on Carnival Horizon is particularly alluring if you’re a Dr. Seuss fan. Unique among the water parks in the Carnival fleet, it has a Dr. Seuss theme. The water park area on Carnival Venezia also is notable as it has one more water slide than the water parks on the Vista-class ships.

All of these ships hold about 4,000 passengers each, based on double occupancy.

Note that one more Costa Cruises ship that is similar to Carnival Venezia (Costa Firenze) will be joining the Carnival fleet in 2024. It’ll be renamed Carnival Firenze.

Dream class

Ships in class: Carnival Breeze (2012), Carnival Magic (2011) and Carnival Dream (2009).

Size: 130,000 tons.

Carnival’s Dream-class ships are roughly the same size as its Vista-class ships, and the two classes have a lot in common. Still, there are a few key differences.

For starters, the Dream-class ships don’t have Imax theaters or trampoline parks. Both were innovations that debuted with the Vista-class ships. They also lack exclusive, keycard-restricted cabin areas and some of the eateries found on Vista-class ships.

Still, for the most part, if you’ve been on a Vista-class ship, you’ll immediately feel at home on a Dream-class ship.

Related: The ultimate guide to Carnival’s VIFP Club loyalty program

Dream-class ships share some of the same amenities as Vista-class ships. For instance, Carnival Dream and Carnival Magic both feature ropes courses on their top decks while Carnival Breeze has a 4D “thrill theater.” These innovations first debuted on Dream-class ships.

Dream-class ships also offer water parks with waterslides on their top decks, miniature golf courses, sports courts for basketball and volleyball, and multiple pools.

Interior venues on Dream-class ships include Punchliner comedy clubs, piano bars, casinos and showrooms for big production shows. The dining options are similar to what you’ll find on Vista-class ships; Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina, steakhouses and the Italian eatery Cucina Del Capitano are included on all three vessels.

Two of the three ships — Carnival Breeze and Carnival Dream — also have sushi eateries, while Carnival Breeze and Carnival Magic have Carnival’s Caribbean-inspired watering hole, RedFrog Pub.

The ships in this class hold 3,646 to 3,690 passengers, based on double occupancy.

Splendor class

Ships in class: Carnival Splendor (2008).

Size: 113,300 tons.

Carnival Splendor is an outlier in the Carnival fleet — a ship that makes up a class all its own. That said, it has a lot in common with the ships of Carnival’s Conquest-class ships (see below).

Originally designed and ordered for Italy-based Costa Cruises — a sister brand to Carnival — the ship is actually a sister vessel to Costa’s four Concordia-class ships. It will be familiar to anyone who knows Carnival ships because the design of Costa’s Concordia class was based upon the design of Carnival’s Conquest class, and the two classes are very similar.

The main difference between Carnival Splendor and its Conquest-class cousins is that the former has an enlarged and redesigned top deck area. The structure around the main pool of the ship is noticeably different, with a retractable, sliding glass roof that you won’t find on the Conquest-class ships, as well as a water play area for kids. The ship also has a bigger spa area.

Other than that, though, Carnival Splendor is basically a variation of the Conquest-class ships. Size-wise, it’s just a few thousand tons bigger. It holds 3,012 passengers, based on double occupancy.

Conquest class

Ships in class: Carnival Freedom (2007), Carnival Liberty (2005), Carnival Valor (2004), Carnival Glory (2003) and Carnival Conquest (2002).

Size: 110,000 tons.

At 111,000 tons, the Conquest-class ships (and Carnival Splendor, noted above) are about 20% smaller than the newer Vista-class and Dream-class ships. As a result, they have somewhat fewer amenities.

Still, you’ll find a lot of the classic Carnival “fun ship” attractions on these vessels including water play areas with waterslides, miniature golf courses and adults-only Serenity deck-top retreat areas.

You’ll also find a solid array of eateries on each of the ships including a Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina burrito outlets and steakhouses.

In addition to being smaller than Vista-class and Dream-class ships, Conquest-class ships also sail with fewer passengers. All of the Conquest-class vessels hold just shy of 3,000 passengers at double occupancy — about 1,000 fewer passengers than the Vista-class ships.

That’s a noticeable difference if you’re the kind of vacationer who doesn’t like to be around giant crowds. For some Carnival fans, the smaller size of the Conquest class and Splendor class makes these ships appealing. Others prefer the added amenities that come with the bigger ships.

Spirit class

Ships in class: Carnival Miracle (2004), Carnival Legend (2002), Carnival Pride (2002), Carnival Spirit (2001) and Carnival Luminosa (2009).

Size: 88,500 tons.

Carnival Spirit-class ships are the adventurers of the Carnival fleet.

The vessels are built for “all-weather” cruising, with pools that can be covered by retractable domes when it’s cold and stormy. These are the ships that sail in places such as Alaska, where even in the summer it can be too chilly for sunning on an open pool deck.

These are also the ships that Carnival uses for winter sailings to the Caribbean from Baltimore, which can involve a day or two of cold and stormy sailing in the Atlantic.

In some recent years, Carnival has also deployed one of its Spirit-class ships across the Pacific to Australia — the most far-flung destination that it offers on its schedule.

In addition to having a weather-proof main pool area, the Spirit-class ships are great for far-flung destinations because of their relatively small size, which allows them to access smaller ports. At just 88,500 tons, they’re among the smallest ships in the Carnival fleet — less than half the size of Carnival’s new Excel-class vessels.

The Spirit-class ships are notably lower and sleeker than most other vessels in the Carnival fleet. Passing under relatively small bridges is not a problem for them. Unlike a lot of recently built cruise vessels, they also are thin enough in the middle that they can squeeze through the old locks of the Panama Canal.

The Spirit-class vessels also boast the largest percentage of balcony cabins and oceanview cabins in the Carnival fleet, which makes them perfect for a destination such as Alaska where being able to watch the scenery from your cabin is a big plus.

They’re also relatively intimate ships, holding just 2,124 passengers at double occupancy. By modern-day cruise ship standards, that makes them “mid-size” vessels.

Still, you can expect to find many of the same fun-focused features on Spirit-class ships that you’ll find on the line’s bigger vessels, including water parks with waterslides and miniature golf courses.

Spirit-class ships also have one of the most unique features in all of the cruising industry — special date-night restaurants that are incorporated into their funnels and feature translucent glass-dome ceilings.

Note that one of the Spirit-class ships, Carnival Luminosa, was originally built for Costa Cruises, a sister line to Carnival (it originally sailed under the name Costa Luminosa). The vessel was built to the same basic specifications as the four Spirit-class vessels built for Carnival in this class, although it is a tad bigger and can hold a few more passengers. It dates to 2009.

Sunshine class

Ships in class: Carnival Radiance (2000/2021), Carnival Sunrise (1999/2019) and Carnival Sunshine (1996/2013).

Size: 102,000 tons.

The Sunshine class (once known as the Destiny class) may be the most unusual class of ships in the Carnival fleet. On paper, the ships in this class are among the oldest vessels that Carnival operates. However, you also can make an argument that they are among the newest vessels in the line.

This is because each of the ships in this series has been almost completely gutted and rebuilt from the waterline up.

The makeovers of the ships, which began in 2013, were so thorough that Carnival has given each of the vessels a new name. Carnival Sunshine is what old-time Carnival fans will remember as Carnival Destiny. Carnival Sunrise is the former Carnival Triumph. Carnival Radiance is the ship that began life as Carnival Victory.

Carnival spent $200 million alone in 2019 overhauling Carnival Sunrise. In addition to sprucing up just about every space on the ship, the money was used to add classic Carnival attractions that the ship lacked. This included a full-blown water park, which replaced a single waterslide on one of its top decks.

Carnival Sunrise also received a SportSquare area on its top deck like the ones found on newer Carnival vessels. It has a ropes course, basketball court, miniature golf course, outdoor pool and ping-pong tables. Carnival didn’t end the deck-top changes there. It also found space for another signature Carnival offering that had been lacking: an adults-only Serenity outdoor lounge area with padded loungers, daybeds, a hot tub and a full bar.

In addition, Carnival Sunrise now has half a dozen new food and beverage venues including a version of Carnival’s signature steakhouse, Fahrenheit 555; Carnival’s signature Italian eatery, Cucina Del Capitano; and a Bonsai Express sushi outlet.

Related: Our take on Carnival’s revamped Carnival Sunrise

The overhaul of Carnival Sunshine, which took place in 2013, brought similar changes, as well as a complete renovation of the ship’s pool area that incorporated a multideck waterfall.

Carnival Radiance, for its part, just emerged from its long-scheduled overhaul, which was delayed in late 2021 by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Note that even after the makeovers, the ships still don’t have all the bells and whistles of Carnival’s truly new ships, such as Carnival Panorama. As noted above, Carnival’s newest ships are bigger than its older ships, allowing for more attractions, restaurants and lounges.

At around 102,000 tons, the Sunshine-class ships are more than 20% smaller than Carnival Panorama and more than 40% smaller than Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

The ships hold from 2,984 to 3,002 passengers, based on double occupancy.

Interestingly, these weren’t always considered smaller vessels. In fact, when the line first unveiled Carnival Sunshine in 1996 (back when it was called Carnival Destiny), it was the biggest cruise ship in the world. It also was the first cruise ship to surpass 100,000 tons.

Now, it doesn’t even crack the list of the 50 biggest cruise vessels.

Fantasy class

Ships in class: Carnival Paradise (1998) and Carnival Elation (1998).

Size: 70,000 tons.

Built in the 1990s, the Fantasy-class ships are Carnival’s oldest and smallest ships, and the line is in the process of phasing them out. Going into 2020, the line had eight of these vessels. It removed four of them from its fleet soon after the COVID-19 pandemic began, and this year it removed two more — Carnival Sensation and Carnival Ecstasy.

The two Fantasy-class ships that are left are mostly used in secondary ports — such as Jacksonville, Florida, and Mobile, Alabama — that might not be able to support bigger vessels.

Related: Why I’m sad to see Carnival retiree its smallest ship

While still much-beloved by Carnival fans, in part for their intimate size, these ships notably lack a large number of balcony cabins — the cabin type that everyone wants these days. Most of the cabins on these ships are ocean-view cabins that only offer a window or a porthole, or windowless inside cabins.

That said, the two remaining Fantasy-class ships have undergone renovations over the years to add more balcony cabins. Depending on the ship, there were between 98 and 150 new balconies added, including new suites.

The ships have relatively fewer amenities and venues than the newer and bigger Carnival ships. You won’t find giant water parks on these vessels as you would on newer Carnival ships. You will find multiple slides and a spray park for the kids, though. The dining options are also limited.

Still, for a lot of Carnival fans, these are fun ships.

Two vessels each hold around 2,100 passengers, based on double occupancy.

Bottom line

Carnival has quite a few different classes of ships, but the differences between many of them aren’t as big as the differences between classes at other lines.

You’ll find a lot of consistency from ship to ship in the Carnival fleet in the type of venues that you find on board. In recent years, Carnival has spent $2 billion overhauling many of its ships to create that consistency in onboard venues and amenities.

Vacationers looking for a big resort experience with a lot of options should choose one of Carnival’s newest ships, which are bigger and have more amenities. If you’re looking for more intimacy on a cruise ship, some of the older classes of ships, such as those in the Spirit class, might be just right.

Carnival Spirit Cruise Ship: Overview and Things to Do

carnival spirit cruise ship australia

Book Your Next Amazing Cruise with Travel Leader, Jeffrey Cleary

A little over two decades old, Carnival Spirit is one of Carnival Cruise Line’s older ships . However, despite her age, she still offers a lot of the facilities, venues and Carnival-classic fun that cruisers have come to associate with the brand.

Multiple dry docks and refurbishments have brought this ship up to modern standards, even if it’s not added on extra size or some of the flashy amenities that Carnival’s newest ships offer.

So, is Carnival Spirit a good pick for you and your family’s upcoming cruising adventure? Here’s everything you need to know.

Carnival Spirit Stats

While the ship is slightly smaller than the popular Conquest-class ships , in both gross tonnage and number of passenger decks, it can still hold a decent number of guests.

The number of crew members is slightly higher than the older Fantasy-class vessels. Carnival Spirit is by no means a big ship, and that’s because it’s designed to be able to sail through the Panama Canal and deal with harsher regions, such as Greenland.

  • Gross Tonnage: 88,500
  • Length: 963 feet
  • Decks: 12 (for passengers)
  • Staterooms: 1,062 (inclusive of suites)
  • Passenger Capacity: 2,124 (Double Occupancy)
  • Passenger Capacity: 2,680 (Maximum Capacity)
  • Crew Capacity: 930

Carnival Spirit Construction

The Spirit-class vessel was built at Kvaerner-Masa Yards in Helsinki, Finland, for the price tag of $375 million. Debuted on April 29, 2001, after being christened by Elizabeth Dole, a senator at the time, the ship took to itineraries in the Pacific, traveling between California and the Mexican Riviera, as well as to Alaska and the Hawaiian Islands.

Carnival Spirit was the very first ship to find a homebase outside of North America for the Carnival Cruise Line in late 2012, when it began serving the Australian market.

Later, the ship was planned to become the very first Carnival ship to be home-based in China, though that decision was later backtracked and the ship stayed in Australia. Over the COVID-19 pandemic, the ship was intended to move slightly and begin offering sailings from a new port in Australia, in Brisbane, but the pandemic halted those plans as well.

Carnival Spirit, Panama Canal

Now, Carnival Spirit cruises in North America once again, from the American South in the winter and to Alaska in the summer.

As the first Spirit-class ship for Carnival Cruise Line specifically (the Spirit class does include a few earlier ships that are used elsewhere beneath the Carnival Corporation umbrella), Carnival Spirit kicked off the class and was followed by Carnival Pride, Carnival Legend and Carnival Miracle .

All Spirit-class ships were built to pass through the Panama Canal and all the ships feature the smallest smoke stacks in the Carnival fleet.

Carnival Spirit Refurbishments

Carnival Spirit has received an array of refurbishments over its long lifetime. Some of the most substantial took place in 2012, in San Francisco, when, for $7 million, Carnival added some well-known ship features to Carnival Spirit , including the Serenity adults-only area and the Waterworks water park.

Then, an even greater renovation took place in 2015, in Australia, for $44 million, really overhauling the ship and adding a lot of the venues that are now staples on all Carnival ships.

Carnival Spirit Refurbishment

These included Guy’s Burger Joint , BlueIguana Cantina, BlueIguana Tequila Bar, RedFrog Rum Bar, Bonsai Sushi, Skybox Sports Bar, Alchemy Bar, RedFrog Pub and Cherry on Top. As such, you can expect to see pretty much all the classic Carnival restaurants and venues on this ship.

In 2018, in Singapore, a few more enhancements were made, though nothing major and, most recently, in 2021, in Dubai, Carnival gave the ship a new hull design and paint scheme, as well as some routine maintenance. The next dry dock is scheduled for early 2025.

The wide range of staterooms aboard Carnival Spirit means that there are options for every type of traveler. The stateroom options break down as such:

  • 277 interior staterooms
  • 103 ocean view stateroom
  • 632 balcony staterooms
  • 17 accessible staterooms

Staterooms come standard with amenities such as flat-screen televisions, in-room safes and non-stocked mini bars. Interior staterooms are either basic interior rooms or interior rooms with obstructed-view windows. You might prefer the latter if you’d like a little extra natural light, but you don’t want to pay for a full ocean view stateroom.

Carnival Spirit Balcony Cabin

Regardless of which option you go with, expect a small space that’s suitable for one or two travelers, outfitted in décor reminiscent of a budget hotel, with lots of the orange and red hues that Carnival used excessively on its older ships.

There’s only one type of ocean view stateroom on this ship, which is a bit of a bummer, considering that Carnival offers some pretty amazing ocean view rooms on other, equally aged ships, with floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall windows.

Regardless, with this option, you get more floor space than you’d find in an interior stateroom, plus a small rectangular window on one side of the room. There are several balcony staterooms available, including :

  • Classic balcony
  • Balcony with an obstructed view
  • Extended balcony
  • Aft-view extended balcony
  • Premium balcony
  • Premium balcony with an obstructed view

All of these options give you pretty much what they sound like. However, when you’re booking your stateroom, be sure not to book an obstructed-view balcony room, if you would prefer not to look at a lifeboat as you attempt to take in the sea views.

Otherwise, if you book a balcony cabin, expect a very similar aesthetic to what you’ll find in all the other staterooms, with lots of orange, red, creams and gold accents.

If you want something with a little more space and more amenities, you’ll want to book a suite for your Carnival Spirit cruise. While this ship does not have the all-VIP area newer cruise ships have, with private pools, decks, restaurants and more for suite guests only, it does offer 50 suites to pick from, including:

  • 6 grand suites
  • 32 ocean suites
  • 2 junior suites
  • 10 vista suites

All suites come with extra perks like priority check-in and boarding, priority main dining room meal assignments, priority debarkation and more.

The junior suite offers a standard balcony, plenty of floorspace with a small table, a walk-in closet, whirlpool and other special features. The ocean suite features much of the same, but with a larger balcony. The grand suite is similar, too, but with a dressing area off the bathroom.

The vista suite offers even better views, thanks to its wall of windows in the bed area, as well as the wrap-around balcony. There’s plenty of space outdoors to spread out, lounge and soak up the sun, without ever leaving your cabin.

Worth Reading: Incredible Cruise Ships With Family Suites

It’s worth noting that all of these suites still feature that outdated décor style that’s found throughout the ship, and none of these suites are quite “suites” in the traditional sense, with more than one room. Instead, they’re just larger than a standard stateroom, with dedicated spaces taking up one larger space, for sitting, dining, etc.

Free Dining

Speaking of dining, you’re not likely to do much of that in your stateroom. Instead, you’ll find yourself flocking to the multiple free dining options on the ship. These include Carnival classics and expected favorites such as:

  • Guy’s Burger Joint, for Guy Fieri-created menus
  • BlueIguana Cantina, for Mexican bites
  • The Empire Dining Room, the ships main dining room
  • Lido Marketplace, the buffet
  • Swirls, for quick and frosty treats
  • Sweet Spot, for tasty bites to satisfy your sweet tooth

Carnival Cruise Line Funderstruck Burger

While, yes, this isn’t a ton of options, at least not when you think about the number of complimentary dining options you might get on newer ships, consider that this ship is on the smaller side, so the number of restaurants is fitting.

Specialty Restaurants

If you find that you’re still hungry for more, consider visiting one of the ship’s specialty restaurants. There are a few to pick from, so, combined with your complimentary eats, it’s more than enough to get you through a trip. Options include:

  • Nouveau, a steakhouse
  • Bonsai Sushi, for quick Japanese-inspired bites
  • RedFrog Pub, for pub-style fare with a twist
  • The Coffee Bar, for your favorite caffeinated beverages and light bites

Carnival Cruise Line RedFrog Pub

In addition to these, you can also order room service for a slight fee, depending on what you purchase, as well as pizza delivery to just about anywhere on the ship. You can also pay extra for dining experiences such as a Suess-inspired breakfast for the kids, as well as The Chef’s Table, a chef-led dining experience with a limited guest list.

Bars and Lounges

There’s no shortage of great bars and lounges aboard Carnival Spirit . You can have a drink in your hands in seconds, no matter where you might be. Want a martini? You got it. Beer? Sure. Great wine selections? No problem. Plus, each different watering hole offers its own vibe and feel, so you can get a different experience at each. Your options will include:

Carnival Cruise Line's RedFrog Rum Bar

  • The Alchemy Bar, for magical mixology
  • RedFrog Rum Bar, for island vibes, live music and the drinks to match
  • BlueIguana Tequila Bar, for all your tequila-based beverages
  • The Piano Bar, for singing along to your favorite tunes
  • SkyBox Sports Bar, for drinks while you watch the big game
  • The Casino Bar, for libations while you try your luck

Activities and Entertainment

There’s always something fun happening on a Carnival cruise, no matter what ship you’re on. If you’re on a Carnival Spirit cruise, though, you can enjoy checking out the following:

Pools and Waterparks

Carnival’s own waterpark, WaterWorks, offers various heart-dropping water slides, to get your adrenaline pumping. The Splash Zone caters to kids who are under 11. The primary pools are great for all ages and, believe it or not, it is possible to find some spots that aren’t completely packed.

Carnival Spirit Deck

Serenity Adults-Only Retreat

If you need to chill by a pool without the kids, head to the ship’s adults-only pool zone, where the tone is very chill. Lay back on a lounger, enjoy a drink or a dip in the pool, and do it all far away from any splashing or screaming children.

The ship’s spa offers all your favorite classic spa treatments in a relaxing setting. Just be aware that you can get the best spa deals if you wait to book your treatment on a shore day, when most of the cruisers will be out exploring. You can also get better spa deals if you wait until the end of your cruise to book a treatment.

Theater and Shows

Carnival Spirit hosts a rotating list of shows, but no matter when you take a Carnival Spirit cruise, you can be assured that the entertainment will be extravagantly well done.

The theater itself is gorgeously impressive, with an Egyptian motif, and the seating is highly comfortable, so you won’t find yourself itching to leave before the end of a show.

Mardi Gras Cruise Ship Game Show

And in addition to theatrical performances like musicals and plays, you can also find other activities that occasionally take place in the theater, such as game shows (Carnival’s Hasbro events are really popular with families!), comedy sets, lectures and seminars.

If you want to get active in the traditional way, you can check out Carnival Spirit ’s fitness center, or take to the popular outdoor jogging track (just note that the jogging track is most popular in the mornings, but for a good reason — the view is amazing!).

However, if you’d like to get active in a non-traditional way, that’s an option, too. Head to the ship’s games and sports zone near the pool area, where you’ll find favorite competitive activities like miniature golf, ping pong and basketball, among others.

There are lots of official entertainment venues across Carnival Spirit , but you don’t necessarily have to go to one of these official venues in order to have a great time. Wherever you happen to be, there’s always going to be something fun going on. Activities pop up all the time, so keep your eye out for everything from bingo games to trivia, comedy improv to dance classes, live music to poolside movies.

Kids Venues

Carnival’s Camp Ocean caters to travelers 2 years old to 11 years old, and splits kids into toddler, elementary and pre-teen groups, with activities designed for each. Circle C is for kids 12 to 14 years old and Club O2 is for older teens. Better yet, all of these kids venues are free, with lots of non-stop programming. A babysitting service is further available until 1 a.m. every night.

Carnival Camp Ocean

If all of the above isn’t enough for your kids, there are loads of kid-specific activities they can try, too, throughout the ship. There’s a Build-a-Bear workshop, arts and crafts on the regular, gaming rooms and Dr. Seuss-themed activities and breakfasts. Kids will also love a trip to the on-board candy store and the 24/7 ice cream stand.

Carnival Spirit Itineraries

Carnival Spirit currently offers sailings primarily to Alaska and the Bahamas and Caribbean, from Seattle and Mobile, Alabama . However, you can find a range of itineraries offered on this ship, with durations to match every need, whether you just want to get away for a few days or for over a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Carnival Spirit has been refurbished several times over its life. The ship received refurbishments in 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2021. The ship has a scheduled dry dock in 2025, from January 30 to March 15.

Carnival Spirit is in the Carnival Spirit-class, which means that it is identical to Carnival Pride , Carnival Miracle and Carnival Legend . The Carnival Spirit-class ships were all built at the Arctech Helsinki Shipyard and share a unique funnel design that includes a skylight dome in the ships’ atriums. The ships also have the smallest funnels of all Carnival ships.

The Carnival Spirit ship has 12 decks that are open to guests on the ship. Decks 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are reserved for staterooms. Decks 2, 3, 9, 10, 11 and 12 are social spaces, with drinks, dining and entertainment.

Final Thoughts

While Carnival Spirit is on the small side and its staterooms might be a tad outdated, Carnival has done an overall good job of ensuring that this 20-plus-years-old ship still provides lots for cruising families to love.

With classic Carnival brands on board, as well as plenty of fun activities to discover at all hours of the day, you’ll find you’ll hardly run out of things to do while sailing on Carnival Spirit .
