Český Krumlov and Eggenberg Brewery

Český Krumlov and Eggenberg Brewery

Nestled in a deep curve of the Vltava, Český Krumlov is perhaps the most picturesque, idyllic of medieval of Czech towns. The winding, narrow cobbled streets, quaint buildings, and impressive castle all add to a magical feeling that is hard to find anywhere else.

social media icons

Located in the Southern tip of the Czech Republic, Český Krumlov has a long history of inspiring creativity and fosters an artistic atmosphere. Registered as a UNESCO world heritiage site, getting lost in the cobbled streets and amoung the old buildings, cafes, and craft shops is undoubtably one of the most relaxing, carefree, and curious experiences for anyone exploring the Czech Republic.

The local brewery of the Český Krumlov region, Pivovar Eggenberg, has roots that go back to 1560. Brewing traditional Czech lagers, Pivovar Eggenberg’s beers are dominate throughout the southern Bohemian region. In all honesty, their lagers can’t be described as impressive or distinctive. Regardless, a visit to their brewery complex is a nice little slice of Czech history.

Of all the things to marvel at in Český Krumlov , the beer scene is unfortunately not one of them. Pivovar Eggenberg is the dominant local brewery. With a deep rooted history in the region brewing typical Czech lagers, you’ll undoubtably see their beer in almost every pub and restaurant. Simple, and in our opinion at best described as ‘drinkable’, Eggenberg’s lagers fill your glass, but that’s about it.

On the pleasantly surprising side, Eggenberg’s brewery tour offers guest an honest and intriguing look into how brewing beer has advanced throughout the years in the Czech Republic. Eggenberg’s brewery is housed in a huge historical building just outside Český Krumlov’s center, and tours happen daily at 11 o’clock, costing you 130 czk which includes a .33 liter mug of 2 of their beers. Verging on the more antiquated side of brewery technology, you have a chance to see some old machinery that is still in use. The tour gives you a good understanding of how the brewing process works , showing you their industrial fermenting vats, taking you through their labyrinth of lagering tanks, and ending in their restaurant for your beer sample. We found the guide knowledgable, friendly, and quite helpful to curious tourists. An hour well spent.

The variety of accommodation in Český Krumlov ensures that you’ll undoubtably be able to find something that will fit your expectations and budget. In the past, we’ve always had a good experience finding something clean, comfy, and affordable. For a classier stay, the Peregrin has gorgeous, well finished rooms located right in the historic center. Pension Svět , located just outside the historic center (which means only a 5 minute walk) has friendly for your wallet prices, is clean, comfy, and run by a very helpful and friendly family.

There are unlimited number of activities to do in Český Krumlov. Visiting the castle and bears that guard its walls is certainly a must, followed by a stroll in the scenic gardens. Get lost in the streets, have a coffee or beer, and stop by the Egon Schiele art center , which hosts contemporary art exhibits, and has a nice little permanent collection as well. In warm weather, canoeing down the Vltava is a relaxing and fun way to see this little town and the nature surrounding it. The area surrounding Český Krumlov is beautiful, perfect for a hike or bike ride along the many marked forrest paths. And finally, spend a late morning touring the local brewery Pivovar Eggenberg, and fill your tummy with some classic Czech cuisine in their charming old-style brewery hall.

Restaurant/Pub

Due to the large number of tourist who come to this quaint little town, we felt that in general the restaurant scene has a higher standard when compared to Prague. The variety is impressive; of course, there are many mid-evil themed, stone walled, traditional Czech places, serving heavy, meaty cuisine, like Krčmě Šatlava. Laibon has a nice vegetarian menu, and The Two Mary’s specializes in cuisine from hundreds of years ago, serving simple dishes, more on the healthy side of things. While quite popular, we found Two Mary’s food to be boring . Always a good choice, Papa’s Living Restaurant has a diverse, more international influenced menu, with good seafood, steaks, pasta, and ribs, and the service has always been friendly. Pivovar Eggenberg’s brewery restaurant has probably the best beer you can find, with decent Czech cuisine and very affordable prices, in a charming old-style beer hall.

As for pubs and bars, Na Louzi is a cozy Czech pub , full with a mix of locals and tourists from when it opens to when it closes. On tap, they have Eggenberg 10°, 12°, and perhaps a seasonal beer. They serve typical Czech pub food like goulash, schnitzel, and an astonishing variety of fried cheeses. With well stocked shelves of spirits and skilled bartenders, The Apotheka serves amazing cocktails at decent prices. Their menu includes classics like manhattans and gimlets, to tropical drinks, and even more trendy drinks that combine grapefruit and basil.

Český Krumlov is easily reachable by train and bus from Prague. Student Agency has direct connections and good prices. Your journey should take about 3 hours by bus, about 3.5 hours by train, and most trains have to change in České Budějovice.

In the footsteps of golden ale: Český Krumlov and beer

In the footsteps of golden ale: Český Krumlov and beer

The tradition of brewing beer in Český Krumlov is very much connected with the establishment of the town since the 13th century – undoubtedly the town has been brewing beer since the 14th century. In 1347, Petr of Rosenberg granted the Krumlov people the right to establish pubs and a brewery, and in 1388, the town also received a permit from noble lords for the sale of beer.

In the footsteps of beer

We have put together a short two-kilometre walk through the city. You can follow the suggested route, or simply draw inspiration for wandering around Český Krumlov and its beer history.

Route: IV. castle courtyard → I. castle courtyard Monasteries → Monasteries of Český Krumlov → Český Krumlov historical brewery → Náplavka → Brewery garden → Náměstí Svornosti 7 Square → Prelature in Horní Street → Egon Schiele Art Centrum → Hradební Street

The original manorial brewery – IV. castle courtyard

The brewery and malt house stood until 1560 on the IV. courtyard of the castle, in front of the Plášťový Most Bridge on the side to the city. It brewed beer from barley and wheat malts, diluted and inferior varieties for Franciscan friars, servants, peasants and others.

Manor Brewery – I. castle courtyard

Its origin dates back to 1560, when William of Rosenberg had a new manor brewery built in the forecourt. The building of the former brewery (Castle house No. 65) was completed in its present form around 1561, and the burgrave of Krumlov and later the regent of the estate Jakub Krčín z Jelčan, who had a water supply system built for the new brewery, are also mentioned in connection with the construction.

Brewery of the Order of Saint Clare – Český Krumlov Monasteries

Beer was also brewed in monasteries in Krumlov, in the place of today's Řemeslná Street (from the entrance from Latrán to the right – today you will find craft workshops here). The Convent of the Order of Saint Clare was most likely founded in 1350. The first nuns came here in 1361 from Silesia. However, the Josephine reforms in the 18th century resulted in the abolition of the Convent of the Order of Saint Claire, and the brewing of beer therefore came to an end there as well.

A new manorial brewery – today the Český Krumlov Historical Brewery

It is one of the first original breweries in Český Krumlov, where beer is still brewed to this day. Due to the increasing consumption of beer in the years 1625-1630, the new lords of Eggenberg had the former widow's residence of Anna of Rogendorf, mother of William of Rosenberg, and the Rosenberg armoury rebuilt into a new manorial brewery. After the manorial brewery passed into the hands of the Schwarzenbergs in 1719, in 1837 it began to brew beer using the bottom fermentation method.

Today, the historical tradition of the Schwarzenberg Brewery in these places has been passed on to the Historical Brewery of Český Krumlov, whose effort is to restore the fame of Český Krumlov beer from the times of its greatest glory during the reign of the Rosenbergs and Schwarzenbergs. The brewery offers top and bottom-fermented beers, lagers and seasonal specials, which can be tasted directly in the brewery restaurant and in selected Český Krumlov pubs. You can also buy beer from the Český Krumlov mini-brewery in the brewery shop and take it away as a souvenir from your visit to Krumlov.

Brewery garden, originally called Novoměstská

The garden had no other connection with the brewery as such, other than that it was adjacent to it. Together with the castle garden, it was used to supply the princely court with fruit, vegetables and flowers. Later, however, mainly due to its remoteness from the castle, it began to lose its importance, and after 1870 the lands of the former princely garden were leased as garden plots until the early 1990s. Today, the garden is part of the brewery complex and is mainly used in the summer months for concerts, festivals and other cultural events.

Formerly the inn U Podlahy – Náměstí Svornosti 7 Square

One of the most famous and quite possibly the largest inns from the time of the last Rosenbergs (1551-1611) was Náměstí house No. 7 in Český Krumlov, which was called "U Podlahy" regardless of the name of the real owner. A plethora of noble visitors from the ranks of diplomats, nobles, artists, adventurers and alchemists took turns staying here. In addition to the pub, it also had 10 beds and stables for 40 horses.

Prelate Brewery – Prelature

In 1596, a prelate's brewery was established in the left wing of the Horní building, house no. 155, which belonged to the Archdeaconry of Český Krumlov, whose brewing rights were managed by the Rosenbergs. During the imperial administration of the manor in 1602, it was partially curtailed and later completely destroyed. Under the Eggenbergs, the prelature was given back the right to brew beer for its domestic use, and at the beginning of the 18th century, it gained it back completely. At that time, there were already four breweries in the city – prelate, manorial, burgher and that of the Order of Saint Claire.  In 1897, the operation of the prelate brewery was terminated.

Municipal brewery in Široká Street – today the Egon Schiele Art Centrum

In 1605, the village built a new burgher brewery in Široká Street on the site of the original four medieval houses (today house No. 70 and 71). In 1898, the brewery became steam-powered and began another gradual modernisation process of its machinery. In all its further development, however, despite considerable efforts, it remained behind its Schwarzenberg competitor – the manorial brewery, in terms of the scope of production. In January 1949, its operation was terminated.

Today, it is home to the renowned Egon Schiele Art Centrum, which offers exhibitions of 20th century and contemporary art throughout the year on an area of 3,000 m². There is also the Egon Cafe.

The new Municipal Brewery building in Hradební

When the building of the Municipal Brewery was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century, several other related industrial buildings were added to the park area in Hradební Street in the back of the brewery, which we can admire in Krumlov as an example of industrial architecture. Today, they house studios and suites for contemporary artists and writers managed by the Egon Schiele Art Centrum.

  • Municipal Brewery – 105.4 hl – 6,070 hl
  • Eggenberg manorial brewery – 79.4 hl – 7,400 hl

Pubs and taverns – A pub used to be an integral part of the household and its privacy, and "going to the pub" basically meant making a neighbourhood visit. This custom has persisted in some villages to this day. Having a drink not only took place inside the house, but also in front of its doorstep – in a kind of "front garden". The pub staff mostly consisted of household members, and the tavern was often led by the owner of the house. The spectrum of visitors used to be very diverse – from the lower nobility, through the clergy, burghers, peasants to people on the very edge of society, who often-times found suitable shelter in some pubs.

Hop gardens – Until 1788, hops for the manorial brewery were grown on their own hop gardens around the town (Kvítkův Dvůr, Vlaštovičník, Nový Dvůr, Dobrkovice, Křenov and Červený Dvůr). After the abolition of these hop gardens, quality hops were imported from the Schwarzenberg estates in northern Bohemia.

Brewing festivities in Český Krumlov – On the last weekend of September, the annual St Wenceslas festivities are held in Český Krumlov, paying homage to St Wenceslas, the patron of not only the Czech lands, but also of all brewers and winemakers. The festivities also include the Brewing Festival in the Brewery gardens. Lovers of golden ale can taste beers from the production of the Český Krumlov brewery, including specials and novelties, which the brewery prepares for this holiday every year.

Historic Brewery in Český Krumlov

Have a taste of the well-made beer from south bohemia, what do excellent beer, a charming chateau and navigation channel have in common.

The brewery follows the long tradition of beer making in this South Bohemian town. Beer has been brewed there since the thirteenth century. The brewery itself is over 400 years old and you can find in the historic centre on the bank of River Vltava, in a quarter called Latrán . It is linked to the House of Schwarzenberg, former co-owners who, in addition to Český Krumlov , also owned Třeboň or the charming Hluboká Chateau . The House of Schwarzenberg supported the development of the region to a considerable extent. Among other things, they built the famous Schwarzenberg Channel that was used for transporting wood all the way to Vienna.

The Historic Brewery of Cesky Krumlov… A Welcome Reprise!

cesky krumlov brewery tour

To know this beautiful town of Cesky Krumlov is to walk the streets, seeing it’s restored beauty while remembering its recent past. Forty years of communist control had taken its toll as the town fell into disrepair. Walking through the restored Monastery Complex you find an exhibition of black and white photographs from CK artist Jiri Havlik which truly punctuates that point contrasting the past with today’s elegant revival.

Old Brewery

Our guide for today, Tibor Horvath, leads us from our guesthouse down an alleyway to the back entrance to the brewery complex passing a huge brewery garden that will soon be the home to beer festivals and outdoor events. Keeping in mind that this is a private tour and we are extremely privileged to be one of the first to tour this brewery. With no disrespect to either Tibor or the brewery most areas on the outside of this complex are still in disrepair. Tibor points to a building across the courtyard saying this will be the hotel, and next to it the beer spa, and over here the old brewery will become the museum. I have seen first hand what determined Czech people can do. Seeing the restoration of Cesky Krumlov, I have no doubt that this will become a first class facility and a shining star in the Czech Republic .

Restaurant

Welcome to the Historic Brewery of Cesky Krumlov as Tibor provides our introduction to Blaza Rolnikova  the person responsible for allowing our private tour and the primary contact for anyone wanting to tour the facility. The only local brewery in CK, they follow the successful historical tradition of the Schwarzenbergs’ brewing beer from this location since the1560. In 1945 the brewery came under state ownership (communist control) until privatization in 1991 becoming the Eggenberg brand with updated technology installed and brewing capacity increased. Fast forward to today, The Historic Brewery of Cesky Krumlov has been renovated to a modern brewing facility with state of the art brewing equipment that we will soon see.

Walking through the entry you are immediately impressed with an impeccably clean interior  filled with modern brewing equipment.  Tibor walked us through the brewery explaining each step in the process… milling the grain, mash conversion, lautering, the boil, wort separation and cooling. At this point Brewmaster Jan Nemecek,  pours each of us a warm glass of wort,  the sweet liquid extracted from the mashing process prior to fermentation. It was delicious but given the choice I’d prefer the final product.  Now it’s down to the cellar for fermentation, and lagering with help of their computerized  refrigeration system.

Roasted Barley

All in All we enjoyed the tour, especially the tasting of the final product! In my opinion much better than the Eggenberg brand that preceded it. It was a smoother full bodied beer, unpasteurized and without preservatives. The brewery restaurant located next door serves traditional Czech cuisine with an assortment of their beers sold under the Cesky Krumlov label. You’ll find their beer offered in many of the local restaurants.

Drinking

We hope to be back again soon, gauging the progress as restoration of this brewing complex moves forward, somehow feeling as though we have participated in the reprise of this nearly 500 year old brewery. We look forward to Tibor’s vision of hotel and spa knowing the future is bright for The Historic Brewery!

Česky Krumlov

Cesky Krumlov with 14 000 inhabitants, is the second most visited town in the Czech Republic after Prague. In 1992 this little town in South Bohemia was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Krumlov is situated on the Vltava {Moldau} river. On one bank there is a charming town that never lost its medieval character, the other bank is dominated by a magnificent castle and chateau seated on the huge rock. Krumlov Castle is the second largest noble residence in the Czech Republic.

The Lords of Krumlov , Witigonen family founded the original Castle before 1250. They had the five-petalled rose in their coat-of arms. When the Lords of Krumlov died out in 1302, their relatives the Rosenbergs inherited the castle. The three centuries of their rule are connected with the greatest era of flourish of the town and castle. In the second half of the 16th century Rosenbergs became the prominent politicians, educated humanists, patrons of the culture and the arts and they all filled the highest posts within Bohemian Kingdom.

Bears are kept in the Bear moat of the Castle as living proof of a presumed relation between the Lords of Rosenberg and Italian family of Orsini. Wilhem von Rosenberg hired such outstanding   architects as Antonio Ericero Vlach, Baldassare Maggi D Arogno or painter Gabriel de Blonde. Also 50 alchemists worked for him. Wilhem invited the Jesuit order to Krumlov and built a College for them.

In 1684, Prince Johann Christian I. von Eggenberg had the theatre built in Cesky Krumlov Castle.

Almost all town houses are richly decorated with sgraffiti, frescos ,carvings and remarkable house signs. The downtown area is a labyrinth of charming lanes. In the former brewery house you will  find Egon Schiele Art Centre. After a visit   you can relax in one of the local cozy taverns.

The Castle and the town is definitely worth  a trip.

Introduction to Český Krumlov:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Český Krumlov is famous for its Old Town, with 300 protected medieval buildings, and its castle complex, the second largest in the Czech Republic. Surrounded by rolling hills and the Vltava River, Český Krumlov's cobblestone streets wind past centuries old townhomes, inns, shops, and cafes. Located in the southwest part of the Czech Republic, this picturesque city is home to about 14,000 residents.

Trivia & Quick Points:

The architecture of the Castle and the town is a mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque.

The name of the city comes from the German term "krumme aue" (crooked meadow). This evolved to Krumlov. In the 15th century, the adjective "Český" (Czech) was added to distinguish it from the Moravian city, Moravský Krumlov.

The average temperature in July is 61 degrees Fahrenheit. The average temperature in January is 27 degrees Fahrenheit.

The town experienced a period of decay from the end of World War II until 1989, when restoration efforts began in earnest, leading to its inscription into the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1992.

Facts & Information:

The original Gothic castle, upon which the town of Český Krumlov was based, was founded by the Lords of Krumlov (one of the branches of the Vítkovci family. around 1253. The Vítkovci family was a branch of the powerful Witigonen family, which has the five-petalled rose in its coat-of-arms. In 1302, the last Witigonen died, and the Witigonens' relatives, the Rosenbergs (Rožmberk), inherited the castle. The Rosenbergs maintained their seat there until 1602. During this time, the town experienced its greatest prosperity, with rapid economic development, construction of new buildings, and the expansion of trade with other cities in the region.

In 1602, the Emperor Rudolf II von Habsbursg bought the Krumlov dominion. In 1622, it was transferred to the Eggenberg family. In the 1680's, under the rule of Johann Christian I. von Eggenberg, farming, construction, and the arts flourished, helping Český Krumlov rise out of a period of stagnation that resulted from the Thirty Years' War.

At the end of 17th century, the Castle Baroque Theatre was built; and the Castle Gardens were renovated. In 1719, a new dynasty, the Schwarzenbergs, inherited Český Krumlov. In the second generation of their rule, Joseph Adam zu Schwarzenberg began extensive reconstruction of the castle. During this time, the castle was developed with a Baroque character.

Towards the end of the 18th century, and in the 19th century, the economy and the arts stagnated. By the middle of the 19th century, the Český Krumlov Castle was no longer the main residence of the Krumlov-Hluboká Schwarzenberg family. In the 20th century, the World Wars caused further stagnation though Krumlov was spared damage from battles or from bombings. At the end of the war, the German population was expelled.

In 1989, the Velvet Revolution brought renewal to Český Krumlov, eventually leading to its inscription into the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992.

Český Krumlov is a cultural center with a dozen museums and galleries, a medieval castle complex with beautiful gardens, historic and modern theaters, including the Castle Baroque theater built in the 1600's, and the revolving auditorium, built in the 20th Century, and hundreds of cultural events each year.

This small, picturesque town is a frequent host for conferences in the arts and sciences. It also boasts several retreats for artists, writers, and musicians.

Travel & Tourism:

Český Krumlov offers visitors guided tours year-round in several languages, including English. These tours provide visitors with an in-depth view of the history, legends, architechture, and culture of Český Krumlov. One tour focuses on the 400 year old Eggenberg Brewery and gives visitors a chance to sample the local brew.

Highlights & Features of the City and Surroundings:

Situated in a valley with the Blansko Forest to the north and the foothills of Šumava to the south and west, opportunities for nature hikes, biking, and cross-country skiing abound.

The Vltava river, which surrounds the town, can be enjoyed by wooden raft, canoe, or kayak.

The castle complex, with its tower situated on a rocky promontory, offers spectacular views of the Old Town below.

Strolling through the narrow cobblestone streets of the Old Town, visitors will find an enchanted atmosphere, surrounded by more than 300 well-preserved historical buildings, including St. Vitus' Church, built in the early 1400's.

What to Do & See

Take a relaxing cruise on the Vltava River on an old-fashioned wooden raft, or rent a canoe or kayak and explore the river and the edge of town. The adventurous will enjoy the adrenaline rush of white-water rafting on the upper part of the river and the region near the Lipno Dam on the outskirts of the town. For those who wish to spend more than one day rafting, campgrounds, pensions, and hotels are available around the river outside Český Krumlov.

The Old Town has several noteworthy museums and galleries. The Regional Museum houses a permanent collection of about 34,000 objects including Bohemian antiques and archeological finds from the region as well as a detailed model of Český Krumlov at the turn of the 19th century. The Museum of Architecture and Craft, located on the first floor of the historic house, Dlouhá 92, in the centre of Český Krumlov, displays the architectural details of the burgher houses of Český Krumlov from the Middle Ages to today. The museum exhibits timber ceilings, portals, doors and windows, framing and facades, as well as colourful interior decorations.

The 5-Petalled Rose Celebrations, a three-day festival in mid-June, transform Český Krumlov into a Renaissance town once again. The festival harkens back to the time of the greatest development in Český Krumlov, when Vilém and Petr Vok from the House of Rosenberg reigned. Day and night, visitors are treated to concerts; dances; daredevil performances; duels; theatrical performances; arts and crafts; processions of noble ladies and gentlemen, knights, and jugglers; a Medieval Fest; and much more.

The expansive castle complex features 40 buildings, various exhibitions, and several viewpoints.

Paid admission is required for specific experiences, such as the castle tower and specialized tours. One guided tour, Tour 1, lasts about 50 minutes and takes you through rooms filled with invaluable art and ornaments. Photography inside is restricted, but views of the town from open windows are fair game for your camera. The tour concludes in a masquerade ballroom adorned with paintings. Another option is Tour Route 3, focused on the world's oldest baroque theater. The castle comes highly rated on every website we visited, and that's why it's one of the  top things to do in Cesky Krumlov .

3. The Castle Garden

The castle garden in Cesky Krumlov offers a calm and relaxing escape, accessible through the castle with no entry fee. If you're arriving by train, be prepared for a bit of a trek—a 2.5 km walk into town and then uphill to the castle, but the effort is rewarding.

These gardens are extensive and meticulously maintained, featuring a maze of hedges and an array of statues. Multiple acres of well-kept gardens greet visitors, adorned with fountains that add to the atmosphere. The flora is vibrant, offering lush, colorful displays.

4. Seminarni Zahrada

Seminarni Zahrada offers an excellent vantage point for capturing the beauty of Cesky Krumlov. Located near the Regional Museum, this small garden-like area provides a panorama that rivals even the views from Cesky Castle. However, this is one of the free things to do in Cesky Krumlov, making it even better.

As you go from the bus terminal to the village square, you'll find this scenic spot to the right of the village entrance. It's an excellent place for photography, offering stunning views of Cesky Castle, its towers, and the red-roofed houses that seem to merge with the castle landscape.

5. Egon Schiele Art Centrum

The Egon Schiele Art Centrum in Cesky Krumlov offers a compelling art experience, combining well-curated exhibitions with an educational approach. The gallery is housed in an impressive building, and one of its standout features is the informative Egon Schiele exhibition at the top.

The presentation is an engaging introduction for those unfamiliar with Schiele's life and work. Another must-see is the Ivana Lomova exhibition, which provides a fascinating look at everyday beauty. Janz Franz's vibrant and challenging work can be found on the ground floor, adding variety to the artistic lineup.

Visitors often note the attentiveness and friendliness of the staff, adding value to the experience. The entrance fee is worth it, although you can opt for the Cesky Krumlov card for added benefits. Most visitors spend around an hour exploring the museum, making it a manageable but enriching stop in your itinerary. We would put it at the top of things to do in Cesky Krumlov in winter, especially if you are on a day trip.

6. Museum Fotoatelier Seidel

The Museum Fotoatelier Seidel offers a unique blend of history, culture, and interactive photography. Whether you're a photography enthusiast or not, the museum provides an intriguing lens to explore Cesky Krumlov's past and the role of the Seidel family in capturing it. Visitors can roam the entire house with an audio guide for context. For a more immersive experience, there's an option to be photographed in the historic atelier, complete with period costumes and accessories.

The museum takes time with visitors, allowing you to prepare, arrange groupings, and disrobe without feeling rushed. The period costumes and accessories are chosen with an eye for detail, adding to the overall authenticity of the experience. It's not just about clicking pictures; it's a walk through history in a museum-like setting that is also a functioning photo studio.

7. Take A Boat Trip on the Vltava River

A Vltava River boat trip offers a different way to see Cesky Krumlov. While many boat companies offer trips,  one standout option  is a sightseeing cruise on a model of a historical raft through the town's center.

This boat ride isn't just for tourists; it's rooted in the town's history. For centuries, raftsmen used these waters to move wood, food, and other goods. Today, the roughly one-hour cruise lets you experience the old town from a fresh viewpoint: the water.

As you glide along the river, raftsmen share stories and facts about the long rafting history in Cesky Krumlov and the town itself. It's a relaxing and educational way to take in the sights.

8. Visit Eggenberg Brewery

Eggenberg Brewery offers an informative tour that dives into the evolution of beer brewing in the Czech Republic. Located in a large historic building just a short distance from Cesky Krumlov's center, the brewery opens its doors for tours daily at 11 a.m. For 130 CZK, you get the tour and a 0.33-liter mug filled with two beers to sample.

The brewery leans more towards traditional methods, and you'll see some old machinery still in operation. The tour covers all the critical steps of the brewing process. You'll see the large industrial fermenting vats and navigate a maze of lagering tanks before the tour concludes in the brewery's restaurant, where you can taste their beer.

The guide is well-informed, open to questions, and friendly, making spending an hour satisfying.

9. Latrán houses

The Latrán houses are one of the free things to do in Cesky Krumlov and blend history and modern charm. Situated along the riverbanks, these structures were once factories, mills, and homes for the upper class. Today, they serve as boutique shops, restaurants, and hotels while maintaining their original allure. Walking along the cobbled streets with the river rushing by, you'll notice details like a still-functioning old water wheel.

The buildings have an old-world feel, featuring gothic designs that transport you back to medieval times. Despite the area's evolution into a commercial hub, each building on Latrán Street has unique features worth carefully inspecting. The street feels like a living museum, displaying architectural brilliance you can admire freely. Even when the area takes on the vibe of a medieval theme park, it doesn't lose its authentic charm, making it a worthwhile spot to spend an afternoon.

10. Lavka pod Zamkem

Lavka pod Zamkem is a wooden bridge near the city's entrance, offering an immediate connection between the city and the castle grounds. The bridge is well-constructed and scenic, especially in the summer when it's adorned with red flowers.

Not only does it provide a beautiful vantage point over the river, but it's also highly photogenic, making it a popular spot for capturing the essence of Cesky Krumlov in pictures. Additionally, if you're interested in water activities, kayaks are available for rent beside the water near the bridge.

11. Miroslav Paral Art Gallery

The Miroslav Paral Art Gallery is nestled deep within the cellars of Cesky Krumlov Castle, offering an intriguing mix of art, architecture, and history. The gallery features a broad collection of works by Czech artist Miroslav Paral, available for purchase. His expressive sculptures and drawings are evocatively displayed in the underground rooms, lit dimly to amplify the depth and symbolism in his art.

The gallery's setting in the castle's stone catacombs adds an extra charisma, complemented by enchanting background music. Paral's work reflects significant periods in Czech history, notably spanning from the Communist occupation through to the post-Velvet Revolution era.

12. Svornosti Square

Svornosti Square is a central hub in Cesky Krumlov's old medieval town, offering a place to rest and recharge. Lovely old buildings surround the square, and there are many restaurants, small shops, and cafes where you can grab something to eat and drink.

While the square has its charm with its blend of eateries and storefronts, the buildings themselves are standout attractions, encapsulating the rich architectural heritage of the Old Town. Given its central location, many visitors use the square as a starting point for exploring Cesky Krumlov.

Whether you're looking to take a breather, grab some food, or simply admire the historic buildings, Svornosti Square provides a convenient and scenic setting for all these activities.

13. Open-air Theatre with Revolving Auditorium

The Open-air Theatre with Revolving Auditorium in Cesky Krumlov is renowned for its unique design. Located in the gardens of the Czech Republic's second-largest castle, the theater provides a one-of-a-kind experience.

Its revolving auditorium allows the audience to turn towards the section where the action occurs, making viewers feel like they're part of the play. Ticket availability can be tight, as sales for the June-through-September season often start as early as January. Whether it's a performance of Dracula, The Three Musketeers, or the Verdi opera Il Trovatore, the shows are praised for their excellent direction and strong performances.

Ticket prices are considered regular but often sell out, so booking in advance is advisable. It is one of the more unique things to do in Cesky Krumlov.

14. Fairytale House – Puppet Museum

The Fairytale House – Puppet Museum is a treasure trove of marionettes. Filled with puppets from floor to ceiling, the museum is more like an extensive private collection. Each puppet is crafted with intricate details and displayed in inventive settings.

The museum spans two floors and includes an attic, where you'll find some eerier puppets. Be cautious, though, as navigating the steep stairs can be challenging. This unique space also provides a hands-on experience for children, offering a stage and puppets to play with. The cost of admission is nominal, and while there's no informational signage, the puppets and their displays speak for themselves.

The owner adds an extra layer of charm, sharing ghost stories related to the venue. As a bonus, there's a gift shop where you can pick up a memento of your visit.

Final Thoughts

Most visitors take a day trip to Český Krumlov from Prague ; given the town's relatively small size and limited number of activities, you can still make the most of your time here.

Our advice would be don't rush – the beauty of Český Krumlov is best absorbed at a leisurely pace. Walk through the cobblestone streets, drink a cup of coffee at one of the local cafes, and don't miss out on visiting the castle. Even though it's a smaller destination, Český Krumlov offers a range of experiences that make for a fulfilling visit.
