Travel Kitchen Set: The Essentials for Cooking While Traveling

Travel Kitchen Set: The Essentials for Cooking While Traveling

We’ve all been there before. The times before you packed a travel kitchen set.

After going to the supermarket and picking out some local ingredients, you return to your accommodations all excited to cook up a feast.

You set everything out on the table. Then you open the cupboards to find a bent fork, a warped pan, and a butter knife so dull it wouldn’t even cut butter.

Anger and frustration set in.

How will you boil that pasta?

How are you gonna chop those veggies?

There aren’t even any plates or bowls!

You sigh in defeat and polish off that loaf of bread you bought with some wine. You vow never to cook on the road again.

Cooking while traveling doesn’t need to be this way! We have found that by traveling with a few essential items (that we tweak depending on the trip), we can prepare great meals wherever we may be.

If, like us, you’re a long-term traveler, digital nomad, house sitter, or all of the above, unless you have unlimited funds, eating out every meal is incredibly unrealistic. Self-catering is essential for  slow traveling .

We’ve prepared food in countless kitchens in  houses we are house sitting, at campgrounds while we are road tripping , while couchsurfing, and even in budget motels. The key to successful cooking while traveling is a kick-ass travel kitchen set that’s actually mobile. We’re not talking about the surprisingly toted-as-convenient travel cooking equipment that requires a car trunk, or several baggage claims (you’d be amazed at what people insist they must travel with).

We’re talking about a portable travel kitchen that will fit into your backpack.

One would think that every kitchen comes equipped with the same essentials. But if there’s anything we’ve learned cooking in myriad kitchens, it’s that not one single home is ever alike. Whether you travel via house sitting , Airbnb, hosteling, or Couchsurfing, these items can help you budget, feel better, and enjoy quality food (like yummy produce) wherever you are.

Here’s what we usually pack in our travel kitchen kit. What you pack in yours will depend on length of trip and your food preferences/habits. Let this list guide you as you make your own travel kitchen set!

Travel Utensils

Titanium spoon/fork/knife.

cooking appliances for travel

Call us dweebs, but we are obsessed with this utensil. Not only is it incredibly lightweight, but it’s a spoon, a fork, AND a knife all in one, without being useless like most sporks. It even will get past airport security (so say the Amazon reviews, we have not had to test this yet). We literally cannot say enough good things about this handy little tool. It’s great not only when cooking and eating wherever you’re staying, but for places that’ll hand you a plastic fork or spoon with your meal. Use this guy and save some plastic!

Read thousands of reviews and pick one up here.

Not only do they double as weapons, chopsticks are lightweight and super reusable. We have ones that come in two parts, so they’re easier to pack than long chopsticks. They’re a great conversation piece and everyone loves them when we pull them out. We got ours at zero waste store Package Free in Brooklyn, New York, but these titanium two-part chopsticks are pretty much the same thing. We love all types of Asian food, so carrying chopsticks makes sense for us. If just carrying the above spork makes more sense for you, do it! Remember, this is your travel kitchen set to adapt for your needs.

Vegetable Peeler

This veggie peeler is super small, entirely stainless steel, and hardly takes up any space. This set comes with a julienne peeler, as it allows you to get those great matchstick strips without the precision knife work. I’ve had it for years and still works great.

Garlic Press

The most important thing I did when moving out on my own? Abscond with the greatest garlic press – aka this one:

cooking appliances for travel

Garlic presses are more uncommon than you’d think. And if you do find one wherever you’re staying, it’s some flimsy shit that auto disassembles during use. I use it for more than garlic – any fresh roots like ginger or turmeric, also with herbs, when you can’t be bothered to finely mince. I’ll press lemon peels in place of a zester. Get a lightweight aluminum one. I suggest the one piece, 3 movable parts, design by Zyliss, as mine still works great over 10 years later.

Click here to grab your garlic press.

Vegetable Grater

What for you say? So many veggies are grate-able. Some veggies, once grated, are undetectable (to the veggie-phobic) when mixed into other things like rice and couscous. A great way to sneak in some extra fiber, something that can easily go forgotten when traveling and eating out a lot.

Not only is it practically a few millimeters thick, it weighs hardly anything and has last us many years. Aluminum and flat, it’s super travel-friendly.

Click here to check out various flat graters.

Flexible Spatula

cooking appliances for travel

Again, not as common as you’d think, and this one is definitely optional depending on the kind of cooking you do. But if you like preparing creams and sauces, then you want to scrape every last drop. Get one where the end and the stick can separate so that you can pack it better. Rubber and wood are super light to keep your travel cooking equipment manageable and not like a rock in your suitcase.

Swiss Army Knife

cooking appliances for travel

Sometimes classic is best. If you want to save even more space and weight, you could go for a Swiss army knife designed for cooking while traveling.   Getting a Swiss army knife can be quite handy as they come with a can opener, corkscrew, and other utensils. Be careful not to bring it in your carry-on though, or you’ll get it taken away as happened to us. =(

Shop classic Swiss Army knives.

Containers for Your Travel Kitchen Set

Collapsible salad spinner.

Whether it’s leafy greens or veggies that need washing, we (mostly Veren) find this indispensable. Not being able to wash and properly dry your greens is one reason (other than the required effort) why so many people aren’t in the habit of making a salad. Don’t make excuses – make the salad.

cooking appliances for travel

Bonus: doubles as a mixing bowl and the basket as a strainer. You can also use it when you’re not traveling – we’ve seen quite a few homes with these collapsible salad spinners instead of the normal giant ones that take up tons of space.

Click here for more details on the collapsible salad spinner.

Stasher Bags

cooking appliances for travel

What do you do with those leftovers? Stash ‘em! These silicone storage bags are endlessly reusable and can be used to store anything from cooked pasta to sandwiches. Bring them on the go to enjoy a snack in a newly discovered park. Shoutout to RTWGirl for telling us about these!

Read more about Stasher bags and check out different sizes/colors.

Reusable Wrap

Another way to store leftover food is with a reusable wrap. These are best for sandwiches, cookies, and bread.

Reusable Mesh Produce Bags

Produce bags are a great alternative to all the plastic bags you’d normally use grocery shopping. You can use them for much more than storing produce, such as for bulk shopping. Although my favorite use is for them is – you guessed it – storing lettuce. These bags will keep your leafy greens from rotting by allowing them to breathe.

cooking appliances for travel

The worst that happens is that they wilt over time – but don’t toss them greens away yet. All that means is that they have lost water content and are still perfectly edible.  Just put them in cold water (iced even better) for a bit and they’ll crisp back up. If you can’t be bothered with that and grimace at the thought of chewing wilted greens – toss them in a smoothie.

Click here for more types of reusable produce bags .

Travel Kitchen Coffee Corner

Calling all coffee drinkers! Depending on where you’re traveling, having a daily coffee out might really eat (or drink  heh) into your budget. Or maybe you just love savoring a coffee inside before greeting each day. We (Sam mostly) like coffee every morning. The ritual makes us feel at home. Whatever the case, there are a few ways you can make your own coffee while traveling.

Steel Mesh Coffee/Tea Brewing Basket

cooking appliances for travel

There may be portable French presses out there, but this steel basket coffee filter is perfectly tiny and fits easily into any mug. Not only is it super durable, but this size can easily accommodate two servings of coffee grounds. It’s actually a tea basket, so if you’re a tea drinker, this one is for you too!

Click here to find the best prices .

Aeropress Coffee and Espresso Maker

We first came across the magic of the Aeropress while traveling with friends in Portland, Oregon. It makes a mean espresso, it is super-fast, it’s lightweight and easy to pack. All you have to do is boil water, pack the coffee grounds in, and press down.

cooking appliances for travel

If you’re an avid coffee drinker, an Aeropress is well-worth the minimal space it takes up (it packs into a little bag) as well as the price – besides, they are quite cheap, generally around the price of 10 cups of coffee out!  Bonus: morning arm workout.

Check out Aeropress models and prices here.

Reusable and Collapsible Coffee Cup

On the subject of coffee, if you’re an avid coffee drinker that travels a lot, chances are you’ll be getting your coffee to go on many occasions, whether its in an airport, train station, or coffee shop that only has takeaway cups. Takeaway cups are extremely wasteful and unnecessary when you can bring your own cup! We use a 12 oz collapsible silicone coffee cup that packs into nothing when we’re not using it.

cooking appliances for travel

There are also non-collapsible ones like the stylish glass KeepCup . The collapsible one does retain the taste of coffee a bit if you forget to wash it out immediately, so keep that in mind. A quick vinegar soak will take out the taste.

Bonus: sometimes you’ll get a discount of 10-20 cents off for bringing your own cup. While it doesn’t seem like that much, it adds up and eventually pays off the cost of the cup.

Click here for more info on the collapsible coffee cup and to see latest prices.

Optional: Appliances in Your Travel Kitchen Kit

Most people won’t want to travel with appliances. But if you’re traveling long-term and are checking a bag, you might want to consider some of these depending on your food habits and preferences.

Bella Blender / Immersion Blender

We try to incorporate as much raw food into our diet as possible. Every morning we have a smoothie.

Hands down the easiest way to keep this habit is to always have a blender. In the States, the Bella Rocket Pro was our favorite. Spain has the best immersion blenders, so that’s what we use when we are there. While the personal blender is more powerful, it’s hard to beat the portability of a hand stick blender. They’re not as affordable in the U.S. (we got an 800-watt immersion blender in Spain for 30 euros, while one with the same power will cost you about three times as much in the U.S.).

**Keep in mind that blenders are checked baggage only!**

Savvy Kitchen Tools

Travel Cooking Appliances

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just starting your journey, having the right cooking appliances can greatly enhance your travel experience. From compact portable stoves to versatile grills, travel cooking appliances offer a convenient and efficient way to prepare meals on the go. Whether you’re camping in the wilderness or staying in vacation rentals, these compact and lightweight appliances allow you to savor delicious homemade meals wherever you may be. Say goodbye to expensive and unhealthy takeout meals and say hello to the joy of cooking while traveling.

Table of Contents

Portable Stove

Whether you’re camping in the great outdoors or staying in a vacation rental with limited cooking options, a portable stove is a must-have travel companion. There are several options available, each with its own advantages. One popular choice is a propane stove, which offers convenience and reliability. With a propane stove, you can easily connect a propane canister and start cooking in no time. Propane stoves are known for their powerful burners, allowing you to quickly heat up your food and boil water for hot beverages. They are also versatile, with some models featuring adjustable heat settings that allow you to precisely control the temperature of your cooking.

Another option to consider is a butane stove. Butane stoves are known for their compact size, making them easy to transport and store. They are often lightweight and come with a carrying case, making them perfect for backpacking or other outdoor adventures. Butane stoves use canisters filled with butane gas, which are simple to attach and replace. They provide a consistent flame that evenly distributes heat, ensuring that your food cooks evenly. Butane stoves are also known for their easy ignition process, typically featuring a push-button or piezoelectric ignition system.

If you’re looking for a more eco-friendly and convenient option, an electric stove might be the right choice for you. Electric stoves are powered by electricity, so you don’t need to worry about carrying fuel canisters or finding propane or butane refills. These stoves are versatile and can be used both indoors and outdoors, making them a great option for road trips or camping trips where electricity is available. Electric stoves often come with adjustable heat settings, allowing you to cook your food at the desired temperature. Some models even offer additional features such as built-in timers and temperature control knobs for added convenience.

Travel Rice Cooker

Rice is a staple food in many cuisines around the world, and having a travel rice cooker can save you from relying on expensive takeout or pre-packaged meals while on the go. A travel rice cooker is compact in size, making it easy to pack into your suitcase or backpack. Despite its small size, it is designed to cook perfect fluffy rice every time.

One key feature to look for in a travel rice cooker is a non-stick inner pot. This makes it easier to clean after cooking and prevents the rice from sticking, resulting in evenly cooked rice without any burnt or crusty parts. The non-stick surface also makes it more effective for cooking other grains such as quinoa or couscous.

Besides cooking rice, many travel rice cookers offer multiple cooking functions, allowing you to prepare a variety of dishes. Some models come with additional settings for steaming vegetables, making soup, or even baking cakes. This versatility ensures that you can create a wide range of meals even when you’re away from your home kitchen.

Another convenient feature found in many travel rice cookers is an automatic keep warm function. After the rice is cooked, the rice cooker switches to a lower heat setting to keep the rice warm until you’re ready to eat. This eliminates the need to reheat the rice or worry about it getting cold before you can enjoy your meal.

Travel Cooking Appliances

Mini Electric Grill

For those who enjoy barbecuing or grilling, a mini electric grill is a great travel cooking appliance to have. Whether you’re in a hotel room or camping in a national park, a mini electric grill allows you to enjoy grilled food without the need for a traditional charcoal or gas grill.

One of the advantages of a mini electric grill is its versatility. It can be used both indoors and outdoors, making it a convenient option no matter where your travels take you. Some models even come with removable legs, allowing you to use it as a tabletop grill or place it directly on a picnic table.

The non-stick surface of a mini electric grill ensures that your food won’t stick, making it easy to clean after use. This feature is especially valuable when you’re away from home and may not have access to a full kitchen with ample cleaning supplies.

Another feature to look for in a mini electric grill is an adjustable temperature control. This allows you to cook different types of food at the appropriate temperature, ensuring that your food is cooked to perfection. Whether you’re grilling burgers, vegetables, or even fish, being able to control the temperature gives you the flexibility to achieve the desired level of doneness.

To make cleaning even more convenient, many mini electric grills come with a removable drip tray that collects excess grease and drippings. This not only makes clean-up easier but also helps to reduce any smoke or odors that may be emitted during the grilling process.

Travel Blender

If you’re a fan of smoothies or enjoy having freshly blended drinks on the go, a travel blender is a must-have travel cooking appliance. These compact and lightweight blenders are designed to be portable, allowing you to blend your favorite ingredients wherever you are.

The compact size of a travel blender makes it easy to pack in your bag or suitcase, making it perfect for road trips, camping, or vacations. Despite its small size, a good travel blender should still have a powerful motor that can effectively blend ingredients into a smooth consistency. Look for a blender with a motor that is strong enough to handle ice and frozen fruits, ensuring that your smoothies are always refreshing and free of any clumps.

One of the advantages of a travel blender is its USB rechargeable feature. This means you can easily charge it using a USB cable connected to a power bank, laptop, or even your car’s charging port. This eliminates the need for a bulky power adapter or searching for an electrical outlet, making it extremely convenient for travel.

It’s also important to consider the materials used in the construction of the travel blender. Look for one made from BPA-free materials to ensure that your beverages are safe and free from any harmful chemicals. This is particularly important when blending hot liquids or storing leftover smoothies in the blender’s container.

Overall, a travel blender allows you to maintain a healthy and nutritious diet even while away from home. From simple fruit smoothies to protein shakes or even homemade baby food, a travel blender offers endless possibilities for delicious and nutritious blended creations.

Travel Cooking Appliances

Collapsible Cookware Set

When it comes to travel cooking appliances, space-saving design is essential. A collapsible cookware set provides the perfect solution for those looking to minimize their luggage or backpack space while still having the necessary cooking utensils.

A collapsible cookware set typically includes pots, pans, and utensils that can be nested together to save space. This allows you to pack everything neatly into a compact size, making it easier to carry and store. The collapsible design is achieved through features such as folding handles and removable handles that can be detached and reattached when needed.

Durability and heat resistance are important factors to consider when choosing a collapsible cookware set. Look for sets made from high-quality materials such as stainless steel or aluminum, which are known for their durability and ability to withstand high temperatures. This ensures that your cookware will last through many trips and remain in good condition even when used over open flames or high heat sources.

In addition to pots and pans, many collapsible cookware sets also come with utensils such as spatulas, ladles, and serving spoons. This means you’ll have everything you need to prepare and serve meals, eliminating the need to bring additional kitchen tools. Some sets even include a storage bag or case, keeping everything organized and protected during travel.

Cleaning cookware while traveling can be a hassle, but many collapsible cookware sets are designed to be easy to clean. Look for sets with non-stick coatings or surfaces that prevent food from sticking and make clean-up a breeze. Some sets are even dishwasher safe, making it even more convenient to maintain cleanliness while on the go.

Overall, a collapsible cookware set is a practical and space-saving solution for travelers who want to enjoy home-cooked meals even when they’re away from their own kitchen.

Travel Coffee Maker

For coffee lovers, a good cup of joe is a necessity even while traveling. Instead of relying on hotel room coffee or expensive coffee shop visits, a travel coffee maker allows you to enjoy your favorite brew wherever you are.

One popular option is a single-serve travel coffee maker. These compact machines usually use coffee pods or capsules, allowing you to quickly and easily make a single cup of coffee without the need for measuring or grinding coffee beans. Some models even offer the ability to brew hot coffee or cold brew, providing flexibility for different preferences and seasons.

The compact size of a travel coffee maker is ideal for packing in your suitcase or travel bag. They often have a slim profile, taking up minimal space in your luggage and making it convenient to bring along on trips. Despite their small size, travel coffee makers are designed to brew a quality cup of coffee, providing the same taste and aroma as a standard coffee maker.

Another important feature to consider is an auto shut-off function. This ensures that the coffee maker turns off automatically after brewing, preventing any accidents or unnecessary energy consumption. This feature is especially useful for those who may be forgetful or who want to conserve energy while traveling.

Overall, a travel coffee maker is a great investment for any coffee enthusiast who wants to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee no matter where their travels take them.

Portable Electric Kettle

Having access to hot water while traveling is important for making hot drinks, soups, or even instant noodles. A portable electric kettle provides a convenient solution, allowing you to quickly and easily boil water wherever you have access to electricity.

A key advantage of a portable electric kettle is its ability to quickly boil water. With powerful heating elements, these kettles can bring water to a boil in a matter of minutes, saving you time and effort. This is particularly useful when you need your hot water fast, such as when you’re in a rush or when you’re on a tight schedule.

The compact and lightweight design of a portable electric kettle makes it easy to pack in your luggage or travel bag. Most models are designed to take up minimal space, allowing you to bring it with you on road trips, camping adventures, or even to use in hotel rooms. Some kettles also come with a travel pouch or carrying case, further enhancing their portability.

Dual voltage capabilities are another important feature to consider when choosing a portable electric kettle. This means that the kettle can be used worldwide, accommodating different voltage standards in different countries. This is particularly useful for travelers who visit multiple countries and want to use their kettle without the need for a voltage adapter.

Safety features are also a consideration when selecting a portable electric kettle. Look for kettles with an auto shut-off function, which turns off the kettle automatically once the water has reached a boiling point or when the kettle is empty. This helps to prevent accidents and ensures that the kettle doesn’t continue heating unnecessarily.

Overall, a portable electric kettle is a practical and versatile appliance for travelers who want to enjoy hot beverages or meals even when away from home.

Mini Toaster Oven

If you enjoy having warm toast or heating up small foods while traveling, a mini toaster oven is the perfect cooking appliance for you. These compact ovens are designed to fit slices of bread and smaller food items, making them a convenient choice when you want a quick and easy meal or snack.

The adjustable temperature control feature is a key consideration when choosing a mini toaster oven. This allows you to set the oven to the desired temperature, ensuring that your food is heated or toasted to perfection. Whether you prefer your toast lightly golden or your leftovers warmed through, being able to control the temperature gives you the flexibility to achieve the desired outcome.

Another useful feature to look for is a timer function. With a timer, you can set the cooking time and let the oven do the work for you. This is especially handy when you’re multitasking or when you want to ensure that your food doesn’t overcook or burn. The timer will automatically turn off the oven once the set time has elapsed, giving you peace of mind and preventing any accidents.

Cleaning is always a consideration, especially when you’re away from home. Many mini toaster ovens come with removable crumb trays, making it easy to clean up any crumbs or food debris that may accumulate during cooking. Some ovens even have non-stick interiors, further simplifying the cleaning process and ensuring that there are no stubborn food remnants.

Overall, a mini toaster oven is a versatile and compact cooking appliance that allows you to enjoy warm toast, reheated leftovers, or even small baked goods while traveling.

Travel Sous Vide Cooker

For those who enjoy precision cooking and restaurant-quality meals, a travel sous vide cooker is an excellent option to consider. Sous vide cooking involves sealing food in a vacuum-sealed bag and then cooking it in a water bath at precisely controlled temperatures. This method ensures that your food is cooked evenly and retains its moisture, resulting in tender and flavorful dishes.

One of the main benefits of a travel sous vide cooker is its precise temperature control. These cookers often have an accuracy of within 0.1 degrees Celsius, allowing you to cook your food to the exact doneness you desire. Whether you’re cooking a steak to medium-rare perfection or making tender chicken breasts, the precise temperature control ensures consistent results every time.

Portability is another key consideration for a travel sous vide cooker. Many models are compact and lightweight, making them easy to pack and transport. Some even come with a carrying case or storage bag, further enhancing their portability. This allows you to bring your sous vide cooker with you on vacations, family gatherings, or weekend getaways, ensuring that you can enjoy restaurant-quality meals no matter where you are.

Wi-Fi connectivity is an advanced feature found in some travel sous vide cookers. This allows you to control and monitor the cooking process remotely using a smartphone app. You can set the desired temperature, adjust the cooking time, and receive notifications when your food is ready. This feature is particularly useful when you want to start cooking while away from the kitchen or when you want to ensure that your food is cooking correctly without needing to constantly check on it.

Overall, a travel sous vide cooker is a must-have appliance for food enthusiasts who want to elevate their cooking game and enjoy restaurant-quality meals while on the go.

Travel Slow Cooker

For travelers who want the convenience of slow cooking while on the go, a travel slow cooker is an essential cooking appliance. Slow cookers are known for their ability to cook meals over long periods of time, allowing you to come back to a delicious and tender dish after a day of exploring or sightseeing.

One advantage of a travel slow cooker is the ability to cook meals on the go. Whether you’re staying in a vacation rental, camping in an RV, or simply prefer to cook meals at your destination instead of eating out, a travel slow cooker allows you to prepare home-cooked meals with minimal effort. Simply add your ingredients to the slow cooker in the morning, set the desired cooking time and temperature, and let the slow cooker do the rest.

Adjustable cooking time and temperature settings are important features to consider when selecting a travel slow cooker. This allows you to customize the cooking process based on the recipe or your personal preferences. Whether you need a low and slow cook for tender meats or a quick cook for soups or stews, having control over the cooking time and temperature ensures that your meals turn out exactly as desired.

To make clean-up easier, many travel slow cookers come with removable stoneware and lids. This allows you to easily clean the cooking vessel and lid separately, ensuring that any leftover food or residue is thoroughly removed. Some slow cookers even have dishwasher-safe parts, further simplifying the cleaning process and saving you time and effort.

Overall, a travel slow cooker is a practical and convenient appliance for travelers who want to enjoy comforting and delicious meals with minimal effort and maximum flavor.

Buying Guide

When it comes to buying a travel crock pot, there are a few things to consider to make sure you get the best product for your needs. Here are some factors to keep in mind:

The capacity of the crock pot is an essential factor to consider. If you are traveling alone or with a small group, a crock pot with a capacity of 1-2 quarts may be sufficient. However, if you are traveling with a larger group, you may need a crock pot with a capacity of 4-6 quarts.

Size and Weight

When choosing a travel crock pot, size and weight are also important factors to consider. You want a crock pot that is compact and lightweight enough to carry around with you. A small, portable crock pot is ideal for travel as it takes up less space and is easier to carry.

Temperature Settings

Temperature settings are also important to consider when choosing a travel crock pot. Look for a crock pot that has a range of temperature settings, including low, high, and warm. This will allow you to cook a variety of dishes and keep them warm until you are ready to serve.

Durability is another factor to consider when choosing a travel crock pot. Look for a crock pot that is made from high-quality materials that can withstand the rigors of travel. A crock pot with a sturdy lid and base will help prevent spills and ensure that your food stays safe and secure during transport.

Additional Features

Finally, consider any additional features that may be important to you. Some crock pots come with removable stoneware inserts that are dishwasher safe, making cleanup a breeze. Others may have locking lids or built-in timers that allow you to set cooking times and temperatures. Consider what features are important to you and choose a crock pot that meets your needs.

Travel, work, repeat – it’s the modern mantra. The problem is when you’re always on the go: eating out every day, craving home-cooked meals, and trying to stay within the budget, it can all be too much.

Lucky for you, I’ve compiled a list of the best travel cooking appliances to make the hotel room your very own kitchen.

It’s time to beat that food game with these portable cooking appliances.

What Are The Best Travel Cooking Appliances?

When you’re out on the road living your best life, you gotta have some travel cooking essentials on hand. You can’t just rely on fast food and gas station snacks!

That’s where appliances like the mini rice cooker and the portable blender come in handy.

You can even make a quick smoothie to start your day or throw together a bowl of rice and veggies for dinner.

And don’t forget about the trusty electric grill – perfect for making some eggs or heating up leftovers from the road.

These travel cooking appliances will make your on-the-go life SO MUCH BETTER.

What Makes This List of Cooking Appliances Perfect for Travel?

***THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT: This list of cooking appliances uses 120 volts, meaning that the outlet you use should have the same volt power. The power outlets run in the US at 120 Volts, so these products are safe to use anywhere in the USA. If you are going internationally, check your target destination for their “residential voltage,” if it is greater than 120 Volts, DO NOT bother bringing it with you abroad, you will more likely fry the product instead of frying your food.

If you don’t, then you might be inclined to get buy the sandwiches from cafes or stores.

That can get expensive quickly, so I decided to get a portable toaster myself, now i no longer need to wait in line to buy sandwiches, or toasted bagels and cheese. Mmmm they really sound delicious right now.

As someone who loves fried food, I appreciate being able to indulge in my cravings without consuming unnecessary amounts of oil. Plus, the nonstick surface allows for easy cleaning, making meal prep and cleanup a breeze.

The digital display is a nice touch as it makes it easy to control the cooking time and temperature. The low-noise operation is also a plus, especially if you’re staying in a shared space or hotel room.

6. Travel Immersion Blender For DAily Fresh Nutrition

Finding the right blender to pack with me on my travels was a struggle. I tried several portable blenders, but they were all too heavy and lacked the power I needed to create smooth, creamy smoothies. That’s when I discovered the Cuisinart CSB-179 Smart Stick Variable Speed Hand Blender .

Travel Immersion Blender with Whisk Attachment and with Stainless Steel Blades

The variable speed control is an added bonus, allowing me to create the perfect smoothie texture regardless of the ingredients I use. Whether I’m blending fresh berries, leafy greens, or frozen fruits, the Cuisinart hand blender delivers superb results every time.

One thing I appreciate is how easy it is to clean. I usually just rinse it under running water, and, voila, it’s ready for the next use.

7. Travel Electric Kettle

Hot coffee? Hot black tea with lemon and honey? Hot Cocoa? You can only make and drink these if you have a kettle or any water boiler.

If you can’t start your day without sipping on a hot cup of tea or coffee, I recommend these two amazing options for you to consider when it comes to portable kettles – the Travel Foldable Electric Kettle and the INTASTING Gooseneck Electric Kettle .

It depends on the hotel’s policy. Some hotels allow you to cook and even provide a full kitchen area. However, other hotels may not permit cooking in the room due to food hazards.

  • The complete beginner’s guide to cooking in a hotel room

by Dan Miller | Nov 22, 2016 | all , family travel , food , hotel | 13 comments

In 2017, we took a family trip to Disney World (see: My top 5 Disney World tips for a budget traveler ) for a few days, and one of the things we did to help cut down on costs was a little hotel cooking.

Now I understand that cooking in a hotel room is not for everyone, and hotel cooking is not even something that we do all the time. Still, if you’re doing long-term travel and wondering how to live in a hotel room, some of these hotel food ideas might be helpful.

Pick your hotel room wisely

If you want to cook in a hotel room, you’ll want to make sure it has certain amenities. I’m setting aside the more “extended stay” hotels, such as Homewood Suites or Residence Inn, which have full kitchens inside the guest rooms.

In that case, you’re likely to have all the services and amenities you need to cook in a hotel room, and you don’t need to bother with some of the esoteric things we’re talking about here. In this cooking in a hotel room post, I’m talking about a “regular” hotel room, where you don’t really have any type of kitchen supplies.

You’ll want to make sure your room has a mini fridge. Some of the recipes we found for this type of cooking would benefit from a microwave, but a microwave is not necessary – consider it a bonus if you have one!

In a pinch, I’ve heard good things about the ability to even use the hotel-provided coffee maker or iron (to “grill” a panini or grilled cheese sandwich) as ways to do some cooking in a hotel room.

Bring the right supplies (can you say…. air freshener?)

If you’re staying in a “regular” hotel room, cooking will require you to bring a few supplies with you. This can be tricky if you’re flying back and forth, but with a little bit of planning, you can still eat healthy in a hotel room.

The most crucial thing to bring for hotel room cooking is a rice cooker . There are a variety of “normal” (even kid-friendly!) recipes that you can make in a rice cooker that just need electricity. You can also cook in a hotel room using an Instant Pot. You might consider an electric kettle for boiling water for instant oatmeal (or something more creative), although most U.S. hotels offer free breakfast (and some offer an early-evening “manager’s reception” or “social hour,” which can amount to a free dinner ).

rice cooker

Besides the rice cooker or Instant Pot, here are some of the best supplies we found for cooking meals in a hotel room:

  • Small cutting board
  • Knife (again, this is tricky if you’re flying)
  • Measuring spoons or cups, depending on the recipe you use
  • Paper plates and bowls / paper towels
  • Utensils, including larger utensils, such as large mixing spoons, to help you make your recipe
  • Storage containers / Ziplock bags
  • Mixing bowl
  • Dish soap / sponge / scrubber (to clean up after yourself!)
  • Hand towels and/or pot holders

We packed all of our supplies in a large plastic tub, which doubled as a sink to wash dishes! Here’s a look at our hotel room cooking setup.

supplies you'll need

Cooking in a hotel room – plan your menu (plan ahead!)

Finding good hotel room recipes for a rice cooker is not too difficult, but you will want to plan ahead. Here are four of the hotel room cooking recipes we used for our trip . Once you’ve got some good hotel room recipes, you’ll need to either bring your food with you or buy it at a local grocery store. Here’s Carolyn making some homemade macaroni and cheese.

hotel-room-cooking-carolyn

We actually packed food for a few recipes that we didn’t end up making, which ended up being a bit of a waste (because we had to cart around a bunch of food that we didn’t use on our trip). How does this meal look (spaghetti, shredded cheese and vegetables)?

easy meals on the go

I hope this beginner’s guide to cooking in a hotel room has helped you out. While it’s not for everyone (or every meal!), learning how to do hotel room cooking can be a big food cost saver when you’re living in a hotel room!

Ready to start cooking in a hotel room? You might check these top rice cooker recipes on Amazon , or look at our four tasty recipes that we used for hotel room cooking! These meals included pasta (macaroni and cheese, and spaghetti), served with vegetables and fresh fruit.

Cheese+Bread w/ foil on top. Get the iron from the room and put it on top of the foil. Flip the cheese+bread w/ foil to the other side after a few minutes. Simple grilled cheese. Get those microwaveable tomato soup containers and there you go.

Nice one! That’s a great idea

Nancy

I like this post as I really don’t like going to restaurants with kids. Sometimes it’s nice to relax in your hotel room with a glass of wine making dinner while another adult takes kids to the pool.

A rice cooker is fairly light and would be easy to pack. I’m just wondering what all you can make in a rice cooker besides rice. For example how do you boil spaghetti noodles. Got any recipes or links?

Yes! Look for a followup post soon with some of our favorite hotel room cooking recipes!

Hi! This is an older post so I don’t know if someone will see this, but what do you do about hotel room food smells? I’ve seen some posts around the internet that caution against cooking and I would be afraid of hotel management cracking down so to speak. What do you do? Air freshener, candles, or just ignore it?

Dan Miller

I’ve never cooked in my hotel room long-term, but I’ve never had a problem with management cracking down on it.

Beth Henry

Great ideas! I could definitely see myself making pasta and veggies while in a hotel.

It was tasty. I’m hoping to have Carolyn write up a follow up post with some of the recipes we tried

Wendy

I stay at hotels that have a full kitchen frequently. One of my favorite meals is spaghetti with canned spicy diced tomatoes and a tossed salad. I also bring frozen home made spaghetti sauce if I’m driving. I just pop it in the cooler and let the sauce container act as part of my ice. That is usually dinner the first night. I have a small electric skillet that I take with me if I’m staying in a normal hotel room. I can make grilled cheese sandwiches and heat soup in my car coffee pot. I have a coffee pot that runs off my cigarette lighter or electricity. Don’t know where to find them. mine is over 40 years old that I inherited from my parents.

HomelessBill

A small, cheap, shallow electric skillet is my preference. You can cook stew, casseroles, and soups… and if you have a good, small asian style veggie knife, you can cut the ‘longer to cook’ items like meats and potatoes into smaller pieces to the point that nearly any dish is ready to eat in just over a half an hour. Assemble everything, cover and bring it to a boil (setting at 350 to 400) As soon as it boils add a bit of water, milk, beer (as your recipe dictates) just enough to prevent scorching. Then dial back to simmer (so the light cycles on and off–maybe around 150 setting) Cover with lid, topping with a towel (to insulate so the top of your food is nearly as hot as the bottom) Check on it every 15 min…..really, should be ready in just over 30 min.

Note: if you put lasagne noodles, spaghetti, or rice in your recipe you do not need to pre-cook….30 min is usually enough, just double check rice, esp, as some varieties need a bit more time. Sorry, beans require overnight soaking—you brought a small peanut butter jar with a screw on lid, right? .

Ndebele

I fried chicken in a hotel room about 10 times over 2 months. Crazy or what!

Texas Nana

We used an square electric skillet and a instant pot in our dorm room. Made pizza ( the chef boy r dee box), eggs, stir fries, chicken, pancakes, soups and grilled sandwiches etc all the time. Hide the skillet in a empty suitcase when it wasn’t in use since it was a banned item. We never got caught.

How Clever! Our Favorite Smart Gear Includes Sous Vide Machines and Countertop Ovens

“Smart” kitchen equipment is more than just cool tech—these pieces help us cook more accurately and efficiently.

Serious Eats / Vicky Wasik

We’re not ones for gimmicky gear, so it takes more than a shiny display and a bunch of buttons to win us over when we’re testing equipment. But when it comes to frills we’ll fawn over, smart appliances—which can sync with a phone and be monitored or controlled through an app—can prove extremely useful and worthy of a spot on our “best of” lists.

Whether you’re an Apple devotee or an Android enthusiast, smart equipment can link up with your phone (or tablet) and make it easy to keep an eye on timing and temperatures from another room. Here are 12 of our favorite smart pieces of gear, tried-and-true from our equipment reviews.

The Best Sous Vide Machine

Breville joule sous vide cs20001.

When we tested sous vide immersion circulators , this no-nonsense model from Breville came out on top. We love its sleek, streamlined design, a clever magnetic base that keeps it standing firm in most pots, and its quick-heating performance.

The only downside is that the Joule circulator may be too smart—there’s no display on the tool itself, and the only way to operate this immersion circulator is with a phone or tablet. We’re willing to overlook this thanks to its quality and efficiency (and the fact our phones are always within reach anyway), but it may not be for everyone.

The Best Sous Vide Machine with an App and On-Board Display

Anova culinary sous vide precision cooker.

If smart connectivity-only isn’t for you, then we’re happy to recommend the Anova Culinary immersion circulator instead. This one does have smart functionality, but it also has an onboard display so you can skip all the tech. This sous vide cooker is fast, ultra-consistent, and user-friendly thanks to a big, straightforward display right on top of the wand.

Serious Eats / Russell Kilgore

Breville Joule Oven Air Fryer Pro

We spent more than a month testing the Breville Joule Oven to see if it commands its price tag, and, honestly? It really does. This is the appliance to buy if you want an air fryer, a toaster oven, a dehydrator, and a convection oven all in one . The Joule Oven turned out crispy fries, juicy chicken wings, and just-right toast—and it was easy to use. Sometimes multipurpose appliances can be anything but intuitive, but the Joule Oven’s pleasant display and straightforward control panel make it a pleasure to work with.

And yes, this oven is smart, otherwise, it wouldn’t be on this list! While we preferred the Joule app for finding recipes more than for controlling the oven, it’s a fun feature that adds extra value.

Serious Eats / Grace Kelly

A Steam-Injected Combi Oven

Anova precision oven.

This is a smart oven with an extra perk: Steam injection ! Not only can you use the Anova Precision Oven to roast a chicken or vegetables like a normal oven, but you can also bake fantastically crusty bread. You can even get a little sous vide action going—replacing the vat of water with a warm, steamy environment—that works surprisingly well.

The Anova app is useful and straightforward, a feature which proved, well, useful during our tests because there’s a bit of a learning curve; especially if you’re not familiar with steam injection ovens. All told, this is a cool (hot?) smart kitchen appliance that we’re happy to recommend.

The Best Wireless Thermometer for Serious Grillers

Fireboard fbx2 leave-in probe thermometer for grilling.

You might wonder why you’d need an intelligent thermometer, but barbecue aficionados can certainly attest to the importance of keeping an eye on the temperature. We tested loads of probe thermometers and the FireBoard FBX2 was the smartest of them all, with super-long cables, ports for six probes, and Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. You can easily keep an eye on ambient temperature and meat temperature, and even chart and store your cooking sessions in the FireBoard app. This thermometer doesn’t come cheap, but does come ready to work. (Note: We have a couple more smart, wireless grill thermometer picks here —including ones from ThermoWorks and Meater.)

The Best Smart Gas Grill

Weber genesis ex-325s propane gas smart grill.

The Home Depot

Aside from its high price, we can’t find much to complain about with this Weber grill, and we’ve tested plenty of them. The Genesis Smart EX-325s has a generous 787 square-inch cooking surface with an excellent sear zone, and the grill’s smart functionality is actually worth using. Right from your phone, you can monitor food temperature and set alerts for doneness or flip reminders, and it’s all super easy to figure out and use.

Sure, you don’t need a smart grill to barbecue effectively, but if you can eliminate some of the guesswork—why not?

The Best Smart Instant Pot

Instant pot pro plus wi-fi smart 10-in-1 6-quart pressure cooker.

There are lots of Instant Pots to choose from, and the Pro Plus Smart version is a great choice thanks to its user-friendly interface, locking handles on the inner pot that prevent slippage, and an automatic steam release. Oh, and its smart connectivity doesn’t hurt either, though we’re willing to admit it’s not a strictly necessary feature.

The Best Temperature Control Smart Mug

Ember travel mug 2.

If you’re going to splash out on a fancy travel mug this year, make it the Ember Travel Mug 2 (which bested six other models in our tests ). This was a top pick when our editors were asked to shout out their favorite coffee gear , because, let’s face it, controlling the precise temperature of your coffee mug with an app is pretty nifty. It’s easy to use and the Ember will keep your coffee (or other hot beverage of choice) perfectly steamy for hours.

Serious Eats / Ashely Rodriguez

The Best Smart Pellet Grill

Traeger tbb86rlg timberline pellet grill.

We’ve tested many pellet grills , and the Traeger Timberline is our hands-down favorite. Not only does this thing grill and smoke like a pro, but it also functions like a whole outdoor kitchen. Under the hood, you’ll find an induction cooktop, touchscreen operation, a slew of handy accessories, and—oh yeah—smart connectivity. It’s never been easier (or more fun) to fire up the grill, make some delicious food, and not worry about what’s happening with the temperature when you step away to grab another beer.

A Newer Smart Pellet Grill Offering

Traeger ironwood xl.

This smoker is expensive, so we tested 20 pounds of meat to make sure it’s actually worth the investment. Spoiler alert: It is. While the Ironwood XL isn’t going to be a fit for anyone’s apartment balcony or townhouse patio, if you’ve got a yard with space to spare, this is an excellent pick. Now, the Ironwood XL made it onto this list because it's a smart appliance, but we’ll admit it took some convincing to get the app and the grill interface to play nicely. You definitely can use the smart features, but you’ll also be fine to operate this Traeger the good old-fashioned way—with your fingers instead of your phone.

The Best Smart Kamado Cooker

Kamado joe konnected joe 18-inch digital charcoal grill and smoker.

The Konnected Joe is the first smart, kamado cooker out there—and we really like it. In our tests (we made vegetables, steak, burnt ends, and more), we found it to be a total powerhouse and capable of high-heat cooking and low-and-slow smoking. The app allowed us to easily adjust and monitor temperatures and provided real-time cooking alerts.

The Best Fully Automated, Smart Coffee Maker

Spinn coffee maker pro.

If you’ve ever wished your coffee maker were more like a salad spinner, well, the Spinn Coffee Maker Pro just might make your day. In all seriousness, we tested this innovative coffee machine—which utilizes centrifugal brewing rather than traditional drip or immersion methods—and we thought it turned out some of the best-tasting coffee we’ve had from an entirely automated brewer. It’s pricey, but it’s a super-smart machine with a user-friendly app that offers lots of different drink recipes and turns out a great cup of coffee.

Serious Eats / Jesse Raub

What is a smart cooking device?

Just like your smart TV or smart watch or smart anything else around your home, a smart cooking device has connectivity—usually through WiFi, sometimes through Bluetooth—that will allow it to connect to your phone or tablet so you can make adjustments through a relevant app. Smart appliances and cooking tools let you keep an eye on timings and temperatures, and the apps often include helpful tips and recipes.

I travel for a living—here's how I still cook for myself

Buying every meal gets old when you travel a lot. Here's everything you need to cook on the road.

I travel for a living—here's how I still cook for myself

Whether you’re planning an extended vacation or you go on a lot of business trips, there’s one thing about travel that can get old fast: Eating out for every meal.

Whether you’re health conscious, you’re a picky eater, or you just want to save a few bucks on your trip, cooking your own meals while you travel has a ton of advantages. There’s just one problem: That hotel kitchenette or Airbnb kitchen just isn’t stocked like the setup you have at home.

Luckily, it’s not too difficult to build up a collection of compact, travel-friendly essentials that will take any bare-minimum kitchen to the level you need to whip up your favorite comfort food from home, no matter where the road takes you. As a digital nomad myself, I’m on the road 100 percent of the time. Here’s what I keep in my checked luggage that’s helped me eat well in 34 countries and counting.

1. A sharp, well-balanced chef’s knife that’s better than your Airbnb’s

Victorinox Fibrox Chef's Knife

Nothing takes the joy out of cooking like hacking and squishing your tomatoes with a dull knife. And while most every Airbnb kitchen is going to be stocked with a knife of some sort, the odds of it being a quality, sharp knife that keeps your prep work from taking an hour? Not great.

2. A multi-tool with everything but the kitchen sink

Gentleman's Hardware Kitchen Multitool

There is nothing as annoying as getting halfway through a recipe and realizing the kitchen of your vacation rental is missing something necessary—and trust me, you do not want to resort to peeling a mountain of potatoes with a knife because you thought you had a peeler and it turns out you don’t.

3. Cutting boards for every occasion—and ingredient

Cooler Kitchen Cutting Mats

One of my biggest travel pet peeves is checking into an apartment that only has one cutting board—or worse, none. As a little bit of a germaphobe, I subscribe to the kitchen philosophy that says you should use different cutting boards for meats and produce. It’s just good food handling.

Obviously, it’s tough to travel with a thick, quality cutting board. But these flexible cutting mats will practically make you forget all cutting boards aren’t made of lightweight, bendable plastic that’s easy to pack away in a suitcase. They’re lightweight enough to add nary a pound to your luggage, yet thick enough to handle months of chopping, slicing, and dicing. And the textured back keeps them from sliding around, which is a huge concern when using plastic boards.

4. TSA-approved containers to carry your most important liquids

humangear GoToob Travel Containers for Liquids

Outside of North America, a good hot sauce can be annoyingly hard to find. That’s why spice-loving travelers have just started carrying their own preferred brand, whether it be sriracha, Cholula, or Frank's. It’s also nice to be able to travel with your own oils and vinegars—it’s not like you can’t find these, but are you going to use up a whole bottle of olive oil on a trip that lasts a week or two? Probably not. It’s wasteful (and expensive) to buy a bottle every time you travel. That’s why containers like these aren’t just for toiletries anymore.

Many travel containers that are meant to hold liquids that contain chemicals like BPA, but GoToob’s silicone travel bottles are specifically food safe. And in the two years I’ve been using them, they’ve never leaked on me.

5. Everything you need to store ingredients, leftovers and more

Compact food storage containers

One of the biggest hurdles to cooking while traveling is that hotel kitchenettes don’t come with any kind of food storage. You end up with nowhere to keep your ingredients, no way to store your leftovers, and no way to take a home-cooked meal with you to work or on a day trip or tour.

I also recommend Thin Bins Collapsible Silicone Food Storage Containers. They collapse to lay flat so they’re easy to pack, and they’re microwave- and dishwasher-safe.

6. A way to bring the taste of home wherever you go

GSI Travel Spice Grinder

A lot of what I cooked back home was influenced by Tex-Mex flavors, which meant cumin and chili powder went in almost every meal I made. Guess what spices are virtually impossible to find in Southeast Asia? That’s right, cumin and chili powder.

It’s so helpful to be able to take a small stash of familiar spices with you wherever you go, which is why I love the GSI Outdoors Spice Missile. It can hold up to six spices in containers that all screw together into one space-saving “missile.” It’s leak-proof and waterproof, and holds plenty of spice to get you through even several months of travel.

7. A way to grind the spices (and coffee) you do find

KRUPS Blade Grinder

8. A way to get your measurements just right

AmazonBasics Digital Kitchen Scale

Serious home cooks (and health-conscious eaters) already know how handy a kitchen scale can be. But it’s even more so on the road—combined with a unit conversion app on your smartphone, it can replace measuring cups and spoon for when you Airbnb doesn’t have any (or is missing half of them, because that definitely happens).

9. A low-tech measuring backup

Best Measuring Spoons and Cups

A kitchen scale might be a bit of a daunting investment for some traveling cooks, which is why you can’t beat the basics. For a long time, I traveled with my own sets of measuring cups and spoons.

10. Something to help you find the perfect pairing

Rabbit Wine Kit

There is nothing worse than getting back to your hotel room with a nice bottle of wine… and not having a way to open it. Good food and good wine go hand-in-hand, so you need to do what you can to prevent that scenario from happening to you. Trust me.

The Rabbit 6-Piece Wine Tools Set has everything you need to get into the bottle you just picked up from whatever wine region you’re visiting, with a corkscrew, foil cutter, bottle pourer, champagne sealer, wax remover, and extra spiral. Plus, it all comes in a handy box that’s compact and easy to tuck away into your suitcase.

Smart Kitchen Appliances: How Technology Is Changing The Way We Cook And Eat

Last Updated on November 18, 2023

Cooking has always been an art form that requires creativity, skill, and a pinch of love. But with the rise of smart kitchen appliances, it’s becoming easier than ever to whip up a delicious meal in no time flat.

Technology is transforming home cooking from a mundane task into an exciting culinary adventure, and it’s all thanks to these high-tech helpers.

From intelligent ovens to connected refrigerators and beyond, smart kitchen appliances are revolutionizing the way we cook and eat.

Let’s explore the exciting world of modern kitchen technology and discover how it’s changing cooking for the better!

Table of Contents

Voice-Activated Ovens

cooking appliances for travel

Cooking with technology has become so much easier in the modern age! Voice-activated ovens are one of the most cutting-edge innovations to hit the kitchen scene, making it simpler than ever to whip up a delicious meal.

With voice commands, you can preheat your oven or set timers without lifting a finger. This has revolutionized how we order groceries and track food delivery, giving us access to personalized nutrition advice and appliance analytics.

Ron Scott from Carnivorous Life says that he has gotten great use from using his voice-activated oven when he slowly roasts things like beef briskets, as it makes adjusting temperatures much easier since he can focus on tasks in other rooms.

Sharing meal plans between family members is also more accessible than ever before. Smart refrigerators are taking things a step further by allowing users to monitor their produce quality and even create grocery lists based on items that need replacing.

With the help of these appliances, home chefs can ensure they have everything they need while saving time and energy on tedious tasks like grocery shopping.

Smart Refrigerators

cooking appliances for travel

Moving on from ovens, let’s take a look at smart refrigerators.

A recent survey found that almost 70% of Americans are open to having a smart refrigerator installed in their home.

Smart refrigerators offer several features that make them quite attractive. For starters, they come with customizable shelves and drawers, allowing you to store items however you like. Additionally, temperature monitoring ensures your food is kept at the optimal temperature for freshness. These smart fridges also provide grocery tracking, so you can easily identify what needs to be bought when shopping for groceries.

Not only are these fridges practical, but they are also energy-saving, which helps keep electricity bills down. Some models even come with smart thermometers that alert you if temperatures rise too high or fall too low.

All of these features make smart refrigerators an attractive option to consider when updating your kitchen appliances. With all these helpful features at hand, it seems as though the possibilities with smart refrigerators are limitless – making way for the introduction of robotic sous chefs in the near future.

Robotic Sous Chefs

As technology advances, so does our ability to make cooking easier and more enjoyable. The introduction of robotic sous chefs is no exception. These robotic kitchen assistants are taking the culinary world by storm.

They offer personalized recipes, automated grocery shopping, meal planning tools, automated food prep, and even countertop gardens. The best part about robotic sous chefs is that they can be tailored to your needs. Whether you’re an experienced chef or a novice in the kitchen, they help make meal preparation easier and more efficient.

With their automated grocery shopping feature, you’ll never have to worry about forgetting an ingredient at the store again. Plus, their meal-planning tools will help you create dishes that are both healthy and delicious. And with their automated food prep feature, meals can be prepared quickly and easily.

Finally, their countertop gardens make it easy to grow fresh herbs right in your kitchen!

Automated Dishwashers

cooking appliances for travel

Nothing says convenience quite like an automated dishwasher. The idea of having cleaner dishes with very little effort on my part is incredibly appealing. Dishwashers have come a long way and now provide efficient dishwashing cycles that can save both energy and water while also saving me time.

In addition to being able to choose the length of the cycle, I can also select what type of dishes I am washing and receive tailored results for cleaner dishes with less energy used. This allows me to conserve water as well as energy while still getting the same clean results that I would expect from hand-washing.

By using the appropriate dishwasher cycles, I get precise measurements for a better clean every time. Moving forward, it’s clear that smart scales will offer precise measurements for recipes.

Smart Scales For Precise Measurement

Smart kitchen scales have revolutionized the way we cook and eat. We can now be precise when measuring ingredients, ensuring that our food turns out just as good as a professional chef’s.

Smart scales are just one of the many ways technology has changed the way we prepare and enjoy meals. Smart scales come with features such as smart timers, automated portioning, ingredient tracking, personalized menus, and recipe tracking.

With these features, we can accurately measure ingredients for recipes, set timers to ensure our food is cooked to perfection, and even get personalized menus tailored to our dietary needs. We can also track our ingredients to make sure we don’t run out and record our favorite recipes for future use!

Thanks to these connected appliances for remote control capabilities, we are now able to create delicious meals with ease. Not only do they allow us to save time in the kitchen but they also give us greater control over what goes into our food.

Connected Appliances For Remote Control

cooking appliances for travel

Smart scales are just the beginning of the smart kitchen revolution. Connected appliances are taking convenience to a whole new level with their remote control capabilities.

With internet-enabled devices, you can now order groceries and meals, pair mobile devices with your appliances, track ingredients, plan meals, and wirelessly monitor various kitchen activities from anywhere in the world. This is a major upgrade from traditional cooking methods, as it gives you more freedom and flexibility when it comes to meal prep.

Beyond that, these connected appliances also give you access to virtual assistants that provide helpful recipe suggestions tailored to your dietary needs. These AI-powered assistants can draw upon your past cooking experiences and offer ideas for dishes based on what you’ve already tried.

Plus, they’ll even keep track of what ingredients you have on hand so that you don’t end up wasting food or having to go shopping mid-recipe. Moving away from traditional stove-top cooking towards connected devices is making meal preparation easier and more enjoyable than ever before.

As technology advances, the way we cook and eat is changing right along with it. We now have access to a range of smart kitchen appliances that make meal preparations easier and more enjoyable. From voice-activated ovens to robotic sous chefs, these devices give us the power to take our culinary skills to the next level. Not only are smart kitchen appliances making cooking more fun, but they’re also making it healthier.

So whether you’re an aspiring chef or simply looking for ways to make meal preparation easier, investing in some smart kitchen appliances is definitely worth considering! They will not only save you time in the kitchen but also help keep your health goals on track.

A Complete Guide to Air Fryers: Everyone's New Favorite Kitchen Appliance

What is an air fryer and why is everyone talking about them? If you're new to the joys of quick and easy air fryer cooking, we've got all the information you need to get started.

cooking appliances for travel

We explore the trendy appliance in all its forms to help you find a perfect air fryer fit.

Air fryers are amazing little machines, and home cooks have been buzzing about them for a few years. If you're just getting caught up on the latest kitchen gear, don't worry - we've devised a complete guide to air fryers including how they work, how much you should pay for an air fryer (spoiler alert: not much more than $100 for a basic model ) and what you should make in these mighty and efficient countertop cookers.

cooking appliances for travel

Despite the name, air fryers don't do any actual frying but rather, mimic the results. Air fryers are also faster than just about any other type of convection oven, and most nonstick basket-style air fryers take no more than a minute or two to clean. And most air fryers are relatively inexpensive, providing big value considering all the heavy lifting they can do.

Below I've outlined everything you need to know about air fryers before you buy one for your  kitchen , dorm or RV .

What is an air fryer and how does it work?

Contrary to the name, an air fryer doesn't fry at all. Instead, the air fryer works more like a convection oven, circulating hot air with a fan into a compact cooking chamber. The main difference between a regular convection oven and an air fryer is that the air fryer fan blows faster and the compartment in which food is cooked is often (but not always) smaller. All that hot air hits food more rapidly than in a larger oven and thus doesn't lose as much oomph in transit. Most air fryers come with a grated rack or perforated basket so hot air can travel through and pummel the food from all sides.

air-fryer-basket

A perforated basket helps the hot air hit food on all sides to crisp it evenly.

What's so great about air fryers?

air fryer chicken on cutting board

I made this whole roast chicken in the air fryer. I may never turn on my big oven again.

This fast, hot roasting or "super convection" will quickly brown chicken, potatoes, frozen snacks, veggies and fish without overcooking the inside. That's very similar to how deep-frying works, which is where both the comparison and the name come from. While it isn't the case for everything, I've air-fried many foods that taste nearly identical to if they'd been deep-fried. In fact, some things taste better when air-fried since they aren't coated or saturated in oil which can overpower the flavor of the food.

Is it healthier to use an air fryer?

It all depends on what you're making in your air fryer, but cooking something in an air fryer is almost universally healthier than deep-frying or pan-frying it in oil. Less oil typically means less fat and fewer calories too.

air-fryer-cauli

When air frying vegetables, a light coating of oil goes a long way.

What can you make in an air fryer?

Foods that are at their most delicious when fried -- chicken wings, fried chicken, french fries, mozzarella sticks -- are often typically great candidates for an air fryer, too. You'll get similarly crispy and browned outsides with insides that don't overcook. But you can also make roasted vegetables such as zucchini, stuffed peppers, sweet potatoes and cauliflower in an air fryer in less time than it would take in a large oven. I even made a whole roasted chicken in the air fryer and it went pretty well .

fried-chicken

The Instant Pot Duo Crisp air fryer and multicooker turned out some excellent air-fried chicken.

Some favorites to cook in an air fryer include "fried" chicken with the skin on; just a quick dredging of egg and seasoned flour and then 25 minutes on high. Brussels sprouts, frozen dumplings (with a light coating of oil), and seasoned mushrooms with chopped garlic are a few more easy sides and appetizers to make in an air fryer.

box of frozen crab cakes

Many premade frozen foods are excellent candidates to cook in an air fryer.

Speaking of appetizers, popular frozen foods such as bagel bites, premade chicken tenders, jalapeno poppers and fish sticks or crab cakes are excellent candidates for cooking in an air fryer.

What shouldn't you make in an air fryer?

Air fryers are extremely versatile, but there are a few foods that shouldn't go in an air fryer. Leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale will likely dry out and turn crispy in an air fryer. The same goes for broccoli, although you can avoid burnt broccoli by wrapping it in aluminum foil before sticking it in the air fryer.

Steak dinner

Save your steaks for the grill or skillet.

While not impossible, steaks are also tricky to successfully cook in an air fryer and tend to dry out. I don't recommend cooking any  cuts of beef , especially good ones, in an air fryer. Save that for the grill or cast-iron skillet .

Do you need to use oil with an air fryer?

Short answer: No, you don't need oil. But some foods do well with a light spray or coating of cooking oil. Vegetables, including green beans, broccoli, asparagus and even potatoes, will dry out if you blast them in an air fryer so a light spritz of avocado or olive oil can go a long way.

Remember, you're still using far less oil than deep-frying or even pan-frying in which food sits in oil or is submerged the entire time it's cooking. Anything with some inherent oil content, like chicken or salmon, will have plenty of natural oil to baste itself while cooking.

How much do air fryers cost?

burger in air fryer

Burgers are a surprisingly good great candidate for the air fryer.

Like anything else, you can pay a whole lot for an air fryer but in our experience, the most expensive air fryers aren't necessarily the best. A basic air fryer is not a complex machine so you needn't break the bank. Small no-frills air fryer models start at $25 or $30, and I've found they will do a serviceable job. That said, if you bump up another $30 or $40, you're going to get a better build, sharper look and generally a bit more power too.

At the high end are the hybrid countertop ovens with air fry functions . These can go as high as $300, but you can get less advanced models from bargain brands or ones that are on sale for around $150.

What size air fryer should you get?

air fryer on counter being turned on

There are air fryers large enough to cook a Christmas ham, but I find small- and medium-sized models under 5 quarts net the best results.

If you're cooking for one or two people a 2- or 3-quart air fryer should be large enough. From there, I would suggest adding a quart of capacity for every person that you're regularly cooking for. So, if you plan to air fry for five people, spring for a 5-quart model.

Size matters when it comes to air fryer prowess but maybe not in the way you expected. A smaller air fryer means food is going to get blasted faster and more often than inside a larger model where the air has further to travel and more time to lose heat. I've found that small and powerful air fryers including the Magic Bullet 2-5-quart model and Instant Pot's Duo Crisp (which has a small air frying capacity once you load the air fry basket in) works exceptionally well and very quickly.

The smaller air fryers mean less overall capacity so you may have to cook in batches.

magic-bullet

I find that smaller air fryers like Magic Bullet's 2-5-quart model ($60) do an excellent job but the trade-off is less cooking space.

Using medium chicken thighs as a unit measurement, a 2.5-quart air fryer can fit three thighs. A 5-quart model will comfortably fit six thighs and so on. If you spring for a hybrid oven with multiple racks, you can cook as many as 10 or 12 chicken thighs at once, but it will take longer than with a smaller air fryer

What are the different types of air fryers?

Solo air fryer: best for most people (and most budget-friendly).

air-fryer-2-green

Ninja's basic air fryer oven is one of the best we've tested.

The most basic of air fryers looks like a small robot. They are generally just a cylindrical base with a basket to hold the food that pulls in and out. These come as small as two quarts and can be as big as six or seven. These models come with digital controls or manual dials. There are also air fryers with dual compartments so you can make two types of food at different temps simultaneously.  Ninja makes a particularly good one with two 4-quart cooking baskets (8 quarts overall).

Solo air fryers are the least expensive too, and they can be had for as little as $30 . I'd say if you just want to try air frying but don't want to commit a lot of money or kitchen space, opt for one of these.

Air frying toaster oven: Bake, broil, roast and toast

air-fyer-1-red

If you're shopping for a countertop toaster, why not get one that air fries too?

These models look and function much like a standard countertop toaster oven but they have an air fry function as well. An advanced version is almost like adding a second main oven to your kitchen since they can broil, roast, bake, toast and much more. Some even come with a rotisserie function. For someone who hosts Thanksgiving or big family gatherings, the extra oven space these provide may feel like a godsend. Plus, they air fry; although due to their larger size, these models usually don't cook as quickly or quite as intensely as smaller solo air fryer ovens.

Breville makes an excellent (and large) model as do KitchenAid and Cuisinart. My favorite in a test of these types air frying toaster ovens was Ninja's Foodi , which blasted chicken wings and french fries to crispy golden perfection -- I suspect that was large in part due to the smaller cooking cavity which helps the air fry function work properly. It also made wonderful broiled salmon and perfect toast.

These air fryers start at around $150 and go up from there.

Air fryer and multicooker: An air fryer that does it all

air-fryer-3-purple

The Duo Crisp is a powerful air fryer but it's also a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker and more.

These are the most advanced and versatile air fryers and they do a whole lot more than air fry. Think Instant Pot but with an air fryer function as well. Ninja's Foodi multicooker and the  Instant Pot Duo Crisp are two popular models, and if you want an air fryer and multicooker or pressure cooker but don't have a lot of kitchen space to relinquish, one of these is a great option. I've used the 6-quart Duo Crisp a bunch and find it works well, turning out some of the  most delicious fried chicken  ever (with no frying at all.) These models generally retail for about $175 to $250

You can buy an air fryer attachment for your Instant Pot

air-fryer-lid.png

You can buy an air fryer lid for your existing Instant Pot.

If you already have an Instant Pot, you can buy a  Mealthy air fryer lid ($94) that will clamp on top and air fry food down below. I found the air fryer lids work exceptionally well, although they don't have a large capacity for cooking.

Should you get a digital air fryer over an analog? Meh, not really.

This depends on your personal preference but the controls don't have much to do with the performance or result. Digital air fryers have presets for things like chicken wings, french fries, fish and such, but I find that even if the presets exist, it takes me just a few runs to learn how long things need and the correct temperatures, and I end up bypassing them anyways. Digital air fryers tend to cost a bit more and you run the risk of the panel shorting out, but having a digital readout of the temp and cook time can be nice.

What's the best air fryer?

Another question that depends on your needs and budget. Fortunately, we've tested to find best air fryers in 2024  and the best air frying toaster ovens with picks in various sizes, styles and prices to help you decide.

LG’s side-by-side refrigerators led the category in terms of customer satisfaction in this year’s J.D. Plus, it made some of the most energy-efficient fridges and freezers on the market in 2023, per EnergyStar , and is rated the most reliable, according to Yale Appliance .

LG is an excellent option for culinary enthusiasts and tech fanatics alike, as it offers a suite of innovative kitchen appliances that allow you to cook like a professional chef at home with all the conveniences one needs to streamline life. Its appliances are known for being some of the most reliable and easiest to fix, and it boasts the best warranty in the industry. While it doesn’t offer ultra-smart features and trendy designs, it’s a tried-and-true brand that will do the job for one of the lowest prices of any on this list. Bonus: Bosch was named EnergyStar’s 2023 Partner of the Year, meaning it’s worth the initial investment to ease the burden on your wallet (and the planet) over the years.

Interior designer Laura Williams of ATX Design often gravitates towards the Wolf, Sub-Zero, and Cove family of appliances for the aesthetic appeal and reliable quality for her clients. She says the Sub-Zero refrigerator is a go-to for projects and it looks stunning when paneled if you’re looking for a seamless kitchen design.

“Wolf ranges will always be my favorite,” says Williams. “I will always be drawn to the red knobs — they add a certain elevation as they command the space without taking away from the other surrounding design elements.” Yet these products offer more than pretty faces. Gourmands will love all the incredible features offered in a Wolf range (think: Wi-Fi-enabled cooking and chef-created cooking modes) to sleek wine fridges even the most meticulous oenophile will adore.

Products aren’t as accessible as some of the other brands on this list and are on the higher end price-wise.

German appliance brand Miele is one of the industry’s most upscale brands, boasting high design and quality at high prices. You’ll find unique features that are worth paying for, from shockingly quiet refrigerators to solar-powered dishwashers. It’s also a top pick for coffee fanatics, as we rated Miele the best splurge for coffee makers with grinders . The good thing is, your splurge can come with peace of mind, as Yale Appliance ranks Miele among the top most reliable kitchen appliance brands on the market. Plus, those in the middle of a kitchen renovation or building their home will find an entire suite of products at their fingertips, from ventilation hoods to wine units and gourmet griddle plates for cooktops.

Factors to Consider

While likely not your tip-top priority when shopping for appliances, considering the design, both in terms of functionality and aesthetic, is still an important component of your decision. You’ll want to think through all the design elements your household will need from a given appliance, such as an over-sized refrigerator for a large family or a small but efficient dishwasher to fit a cozy apartment kitchen, in order to ensure the piece’s longevity in your home.

You’ll also need to think about how the appliance will look in your space. Do you want to have a sleek, stainless steel look or options for custom cabinet fronts in the kitchen? Do you want to splurge on a luxurious gourmet range or are you okay with purchasing a secondhand piece that fits better with the design of your kitchen? It may be worth chatting with a design expert or shopping for an appliance in-person to make sure you find just the piece to fit your needs.

Smart Features

Appliances have seen some major technological advances in the last few years, so if you haven’t shopped for a dishwasher or oven in a while, you may want to do some research first to see all of the smart features available these days. It’s worth connecting with your local appliance dealer to learn what different brands offer and which features will make your life easier and more luxurious, based on your needs. A particular appliance could be worth the splurge if it has just the right convenience factors that will streamline everyday chores.

Energy Efficiency

Another major advancement in the appliance world as of late is the number of energy-efficient kitchen appliances, available at all price points. Beyond being a smart choice for reducing your household’s carbon footprint, opting for an energy-efficient appliance can save you money on your electric bill each month. Over one-third of new dishwasher buyers reported their water and/or electric bills decreasing thanks to new energy-efficient appliances, according to research from J.D. Power. Don’t forget to donate or sell your old appliances to keep up the good earth-friendly work!

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should kitchen appliances last?

While the longevity of your kitchen appliances will vary based on the type of appliance, brand, how it's used, and how well it’s maintained, you should expect them to last five to 10 years, on average, according to Cooley.

What is the best time of year to buy kitchen appliances?

While there’s never a bad time of year to buy a new kitchen appliance, especially if your oven range stops working in the middle of winter or your freezer conks out in the dog days of summer, there are a few key times when you’re more likely to save big, according to Cooley. She says the company’s latest annual Power Appliance Satisfaction Study found that those who weren’t in dire need of an appliance purchased a new one based on major promotions, particularly Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, holiday deals, and appliance sales events at specific retailers.

Should kitchen appliances match?

An appliance’s quality and how it will work with the room’s layout should matter more than the finish or if it’s the same brand as another item, according to Austin-based interior designer Laura Williams. She says that functionality is always her top priority when it comes to kitchen design.

Unless it helps you make the most of your budget, there’s no need to prioritize having matching appliances, according to Ashley Macuga , an interior designer based in the Bay Area. “The priority absolutely should be finding appliances that meet your family’s cooking needs and also fit within the space,” she says. “But, often brands have promotions that make it financially more attractive to bundle their full suite of appliances together. And with the cost of kitchen remodels these days, I don’t blame any client for choosing that route.”

We Tested the $40 Portable Washer That Cleans UConn Coach Dan Hurley’s Lucky Undies

University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley holding a cut off piece of a basketball net.

By Rose Maura Lorre

Rose Maura Lorre is a writer on Wirecutter’s discovery team. She has reported on turkey fryers, composters, body pillows, and more.

University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley has a surprising secret weapon as he aims to lead his team to their second consecutive NCAA championship this month. It’s not necessarily his 7-foot-2 center or his first-team All-American point guard . It’s a $40 portable washing machine.

Dan Hurley is superstitious, wearing the exact same pair of socks and boxer briefs to every game. During the postseason, when his team plays back-to-back matchups on the road without the opportunity to return home, his wife Andrea takes care of laundering those lucky skivvies and socks between games. Dan is a “germaphobe,” she says, so hand-washing them in a hotel sink is a no-go.

For the past year and change, their solution to this peculiar problem has been to use the East Doll Portable Washing Machine , a contraption of dubious origin (the only other thing that East Doll sells, according to its Amazon store page , is a portable potty-training toilet with a built-in bidet) billed as capable of cleaning small or delicate items as needed.

Coach Dan Hurley's wife Andrea Hurley and son Danny seated together.

If all of that sounds like some pretty kooky rationale for schlepping your own personal laundry appliance to events like the Final Four, Andrea gets it. As she said in a recent phone interview, “I don’t know who else would need a thing like this. Maybe a lunatic.”

After talking to her about the machine and doing some testing of our own, we can say that it’s not entirely nuts to at least wonder if this packable, pastel-hued gizmo—which we’ve also spotted on a few influencers’ Instagram feeds, where they tout it as an on-the-go laundry hack—is the answer to your acute laundry conundrums, like how to keep your clothes fresh while you’re traveling or what the next-best option is if you don’t have a full-size washer and dryer at home.

Even so, with rare exceptions, we don’t think anybody needs a portable washing machine, and this gadget wouldn’t make it loads easier to clean your clothes.

How the East Doll portable washer works

The East Doll Portable Washing Machine on a countertop.

Before the Hurleys’ older son gave his father the East Doll washer as a Christmas gift in 2022, Andrea’s on-the-go laundry routine was a more DIY affair.

“I actually found a collapsible bucket on Amazon, and I would bring this bucket around with powdered Tide [her detergent of choice at home] in a little Ziploc and just do everything by hand,” she explained. “It would take forever, and because [powdered detergent] is so hard to get out by hand, I’d have to rinse everything a million and 10 times.”

The East Doll machine is simply a collapsible bucket with a motor and agitator built into its base. Clothes, water, and detergent go in the top—in that order, according to the instruction booklet, although Hurley will sometimes start a cycle with just water and Tide liquid laundry detergent to allow the detergent to disperse before putting the clothes in. (The instructions do not state how much detergent to use, so she now travels with single-use packets, which also avoids the in-luggage powder spills she occasionally experienced before.)

Someone putting a scoop of detergent in the East Doll Portable Washing Machine.

To help prevent splashing and overflow, the machine comes with a lid and is marked with a maximum-fill line. The whole thing operates via a simple, one-button interface: Press it, and the machine runs a 10-minute cycle. A drainage port at the bottom of the bucket allows you to empty the water out when it’s done. If you wish, you can refill the bucket with fresh water and run it without detergent as a rinse cycle.

Hurley (who admits that she’s “a freak about washing clothes”) runs several wash cycles before draining and refilling the machine for a few rinse cycles. In between cycles, she adds a little elbow grease.

“The machine does a good job, but you have to put the work in to make sure,” she explained. “Sometimes I’ll do a little old-fashioned rubbing the clothes together to give it a head start, and then it does its thing. Same with rinsing—after the wash, I’ll run stuff under the [faucet] and then put them back in and do the rinse cycles. It’s obviously more work than a regular washing machine, but it has saved me so much time and aggravation from my life.”

All of that may seem like overkill—but like Hurley, we’ve found that this machine needs the help.

Does it actually get clothes clean? Clean enough, sure.

A strip of different fabrics on top of the East Doll Foldable Washing Machine.

After purchasing two of our own East Doll Portable Washing Machines and using them to clean a blouse, a lightweight pair of pants, a pair of boxer briefs, and three pairs of socks, here’s our assessment: If occasionally laundering a couple of lightly used garments is all you ask of the East Doll machine, it can do the job.

“Underwear, even on a stinky person, is not going to have much dirt,” says staff writer Andrea Barnes, who wrote our guide to the best washers and dryers and has tested all manners of stains in washing appliances. “If only underwear and socks are being washed, I would say the machine is perfectly acceptable for keeping luck alive.”

However, when we ran a pretreated stain strip through the East Doll machine, the results were underwhelming. “One cycle barely lifted a thing. Two cycles didn’t do much. A third cycle lifted a bit more,” she says.

Because of this, we agree with the extra steps that Andrea Hurley told us she takes to get her husband’s clothes as clean as possible.

“For underwear and socks, I would say [to run] two or three cycles and then rinse as needed, either in the machine or in the sink,” Andrea Barnes says. “I would also guess that adding detergent and water and running a cycle before adding anything to the machine would distribute the detergent well and perhaps make a bigger difference with dirt and body-oil removal.”

Also, don’t overdo it on the detergent ; adding more in the hopes that it might compensate for the machine’s less-than-ideal cleaning power won’t help and will just leave you with more product to rinse out. Our staff writer’s advice: “A half-tablespoon is plenty of soap for this thing. You could probably use even less.”

The machine’s biggest drawbacks: Minuscule capacity and (possibly) a short lifespan

Clothes inside an East Doll Portable Washing Machine.

According to its instructions, the East Doll machine can accommodate a mere 500 grams of clothing and other washable items per load. If one pair of boxer briefs plus one pair of socks equals one unit of laundry, that means you can run only about three or four units at a time (with a little wiggle room depending on the size and material of each item). Unless they’re especially small and lightweight, a single pair of jeans is likely to exceed that limit. An entire outfit? Almost certainly not.

We also have concerns about the machine’s longevity. On Amazon, we counted at least a half-dozen customer reviews dating back to 2022 in which buyers complained that it stopped working after a month or six months or a year. A few more commenters claimed that the machine failed to work straight out of the box.

Hurley told us that hers has started acting a touch finicky: “Not that long ago, I pressed the button, and it wasn’t going on. I’m not going to lie; I nearly had a heart attack. I just kept pressing that button so hard and banging the side of the thing, and it finally turned on.”

Who else might benefit from a portable washing machine

According to its Amazon listing, the East Doll machine is “suitable for apartment, camping, RV, [and] travel.” However, considering how little laundry it can handle, how many times you may need to run it for an effective clean, and the fact that it might go kaput on you, we’ve concluded that it may be better to think of the East Doll machine as a viable option only when you’re in need of a short-term laundry fix.

One Wirecutter staffer, for example, says that a friend once purchased a similar bucket-style washer when she was living in a walk-up apartment with basement laundry facilities while staying at home with her toddler and pregnant with her second child. Because she couldn’t physically handle carrying her toddler and her laundry to the basement simultaneously, and she also couldn’t leave her child alone in the apartment, a portable washer allowed her to get some laundry done on a regular basis.

If your place doesn’t have in-unit laundry, and you’re looking for a more long-term option, though, you might consider a compact washer on casters that can hook up to a sink or tub faucet.

Hurley has likewise recommended the East Doll machine only on rare occasion. “I know somebody whose washer broke, and the repairman wasn’t going to be able to get the part he needed for a couple weeks,” she explained. In such a temporary circumstance, the washer “can do the small stuff you need to get done” without your bearing the expense of sending laundry out or the time commitment of visiting the laundromat.

If you’re not skeeved out by the thought of using a hotel-room sink when you’re traveling, we believe you’d be better off packing our favorite hand-washing detergent, Soak , which delivers a gentle clean and doesn’t even require rinsing.

Of course, in an extraordinary circumstance, when back-to-back championships and long-held superstitions are on the line—and the only alternative is donning day-old skivvies—we’re rooting for the East Doll machine to pull through for its one shining moment .

Our fitness experts in the Good Housekeeping Institute have evaluated treadmills for nearly a decade and have seen tremendous improvements in the space over the years. Not only do most treadmills fold today to maximize space when not in use, but several models offer "smart" features and guided classes so you can get an effective workout at home and save on an expensive gym membership. Our top picks for the best treadmills take into account every type of living space and every level of physical activity, focusing on high-quality performance, speed ranges, incline capabilities, substantial running belts and more. We're confident that our choices offer solutions for all different types of home gym setups and personal fitness needs.

You can learn more about how we evaluate treadmills — including tips for selecting the best treadmill for your home gym and what you should know before you buy one — at the end of this guide. Looking for even more compact choices? Check out our top picks for the best foldable treadmills .

NordicTrack treadmills have performed well in our previous treadmill tests, and the Commercial 1750 is a reliable addition to any home gym. Let's start with the build: The sleek design offers solid construction and a substantial-sized running belt for comfortably running at speeds up to 12 mph. You'll also get access to thousands of iFIT workouts with this machine (30-day trial included, with a $39/month charge after that for access to iFIT), including scenic runs through breathtaking destinations around the world with seasoned instructors. What's more, the treadmill offers incline and decline capabilities to simulate outdoor terrain and can be automatically controlled and adjusted by your iFIT trainer during the workout.

The 14-inch touchscreen is big enough to provide an immersive experience, especially during those scenic runs, and pivots and tilts so you can complement your sessions with strength training exercises for runners and other classes off the machine. But if you're looking for an even bigger screen, the Commercial 2450 model offers a robust 22-inch touchscreen at a steeper price (though the models both ultimately have very similar features which is why we chose to spotlight the 1750 instead since it comes at a more affordable price).

Another useful feature is that the Commercial 1750 does fold slightly upright, which can allow you to make room for other fitness equipment when the treadmill isn't in use. At a decent price point, this model offers a solid build and sleek design with smart capabilities that made it worthy of our best overall spot.

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-T7515 Auto Incline Treadmill

Coming in at a very affordable price point compared to most treadmills on the market, this option from Sunny Health & Fitness is a solid choice for walking or light jogging. Those tight on space will appreciate that this machine is foldable too, with a soft drop hydraulic mechanism which the company says is designed to help the deck gently lower itself to the floor.

The console is complete with a digital monitor and tracks metrics like time, distance, speed and calories burned on the LCD screen. You can take advantage of 12 built-in programs for some workout guidance too. This treadmill also includes pulse sensors and dual water bottle holders to hydrate through those longer runs. While this treadmill won’t endure fast runs (it only goes up to a max of 8 mph), I like that it has a display where the push of a button will quickly adjust your speed.

This truly is one of the most affordable automatic incline treadmills on the market, so if you're a beginner or looking for a low-budget investment then this pick is a great option. But just keep in mind that it is more ideal for walking, incline walking and light jogging since the speed capabilities are limited to 8 mph, and the running belt isn't as long as others on our list. The weight capacity itself is also on the lower side, and while I did find the machine fairly sturdy, this is something to take note of.

Run at speeds up to 12 mph and 15 incline levels with the F63 Treadmill from Sole Fitness. The moderately priced treadmill features a great marriage of useful features like a 6.5-inch LCD display that notes metrics including speed, incline, time, distance, calories and pace . It's chest-strap compatible and features pulse grips, too.

You can work out with seven built-in standard programs, but if you want to stream running and walking classes on your preferred fitness platform , you can place your tablet in the dedicated tablet holder on the console. Plus, there is a USB port for charging and Bluetooth audio speakers.

For the money, I feel it's a solid treadmill that provides a decent amount for the value and a nice-sized running belt. It does accommodate higher speeds and a substantial incline range as well, making it great for beginners and intermediate runners. Plus, I liked that the tablet holder is at eye level for viewing, which is a small feature but can make a big difference during your runs so you can keep your neck in a neutral position and not have to look down. You won't find tons of high-end features on this pick, but it's a great basic treadmill to keep you active at home and at the right price point where it's a quality investment.

The spacious running deck and sturdy frame on this newer model from Horizon Fitness has everything avid runners will need in a treadmill. Designed for performance, the 7.4 AT is thoughtfully made with advanced Bluetooth features, on-board media controls, a tablet holder and a rapid charging port.

During our tests, we found the speed changes to be seamless, allowing you to sprint with just the swipe of a palm. The QuickDial controls simplify those speed and incline adjustments (up to a whopping 15%) and are intuitive to use without having to break your stride, making it perfect for interval training. The dial on the right rolls forward to increase speed and back to decrease speed, and the dial on the left rolls forward to increase incline and back to decrease incline. "Felt very sturdy and wasn't loud, and it also felt very secure," a tester commented. "It had great handles to hold onto to get your heart rate and to hold on if going up a high incline too."

Another added bonus: The 7.4 AT is foldable so you can save some space in your home workout area when it's not in use. The 7.0 model is also a favorite of ours with a few less features if you're looking for something at a lower price.

You'll find all the bells and whistles you'd expect (and more) from a high-end smart treadmill in the Bowflex Treadmill 22. The premium 22-inch HD touchscreen comes complete with JRNY content, and your membership is free for the first two months. But if you're looking for a more affordable option, I also tested out the Bowflex Treadmill 10 that has a smaller console but still did favorably in our tests thanks to all of its incredible special features.

The Treadmill 22 model has decline and incline capabilities to mimic real-life outdoor runs, as well as a speed range of up to 12 mph. It's also Bluetooth compatible so you can link certain smart devices and heart rate monitors. All of these premium features make this machine ideal for serious runners. Of all the treadmills we tested, this was by far my favorite with its solid build and longer and wider running belt compared to other competitors. But if you're a beginner or intermediate runner, you'll still be able to find a wide variety of appropriate class content and guidance through the JRNY platform.

This option is also great for the whole family, since JRNY gives you access to entertainment options as you run, like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu so you can watch your favorite shows and movies while getting a workout. "This machine has transformed my workouts," a tester said. "It's very high-end and makes half marathon training enjoyable when I can't get outside. Plus I can pass the time by streaming Hulu and my other favorite services for those longer runs which really helps." Another bonus is that the Treadmill 22 is foldable, so you can make room for other home gym equipment when it's not in use. But the product itself weighs a ton (336 pounds to be exact), so I highly recommend paying for expert assembly. It's an investment but one that will likely pay off to keep you and your family motivated to consistently exercise.

Other Treadmills We Tested and Liked

line break

  • Nordictrack EXP 7i : This foldable treadmill from NordicTrack is also worth mentioning. It has a solid build and goes up to 10 mph with an incline up to 12%. The smaller profile features a built-in EasyLift mechanism for storage, so you can fold it up when you're done with your run. However, it has a significantly smaller touchscreen than the 2450 or 1750 models, as well as a slightly shorter running belt and no decline capabilities. But for the price, it's a quality model that would work well for most joggers and runners.
  • Nordictrack Commercial X22i : Those looking for a serious incline on their walk or run can turn to the NordicTrack Commercial X22i , which wowed us with its 40% incline capability. Speeds go up to 12 mph and you'll get all the other high-end features, like a large 22-inch touchscreen, speed and incline auto-adjust and easy-to-access controls. The high price and intense incline aren't for everyone, but those looking to get a serious workout and mimic strenuous outdoor hikes and runs will appreciate all that the Commercial X22i has to offer. If you're looking for an even larger screen, the X32i offers an extra-large 32-inch HD smart touchscreen.
  • Peloton Tread+ : At a whopping $6K (plus a $44/month membership fee), Peloton's newest treadmill is a steep investment. But there's no denying its quality — the crystal-clear 32-inch tilting touchscreen provides for an immersive workout experience and the Peloton instructors are some of the best in the industry. The sturdiness of the model is best-in-class too. The 67-inch running belt is one of the longest we have seen, and you can level up your workouts with "free mode" where you can manually move the treadmill by the force of your feet. But it's important to note that after Peloton's Tread and Tread+ were both recalled back in 2021 following 70 injuries and one child death, the brand has since implemented new safety mechanisms on the models. Ultimately, I feel that the Bowflex Treadmill 22 offers similar capabilities and smart features for a fraction of the price which is why that model was spotlighted in our top picks.

We had previously tested models from Proform and Xterra that we liked and recommended but are currently out of stock. We do plan to test updated models from the brands within the coming months.

How we test the best treadmills

line break

The fitness and tech experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute test sports equipment ranging from e-bikes to exercise bikes and rowing machines .

We vet treadmills for ease of use, performance and safety. For this roundup, we featured treadmills that we’ve personally tested, newer units of similar models we've evaluated, equipment from reliable brands that have tested well in the past and top-selling products whose specifications we’ve reviewed. All in all, we've tested over 30 different treadmill models over the years. We even send the units to testers across the nation for real-life feedback on functionality and performance.

sassos testing treadmills at the good housekeeping institute

We looked for options to meet every type of fitness level and home gym environment, whether you're looking for an advanced treadmill with all of the special features to support a serious (yet fun!) run or a compact foldable option. We also included budget-friendly options that still provide an effective workout. Our evaluations did show that for the most part, price was a good determinant of how well-made the treadmills were but that mid-tier options still performed well. If you're looking for a more compact option, you can check out our top picks for the best foldable treadmills too.

What to look for when shopping for a treadmill

line break

A treadmill that fits into your budget is most important, and our top picks have a wide range of price options to choose from. There are a few other important factors you'll want to take into account too.

sassos testing out the running belt on a horizon fitness treadmill

✔️ Size: Pay close attention to the dimensions of your treadmill so it’s guaranteed to fit your space. Keep in mind that most treadmills have an incline feature so you'll want to have at least a foot of clearance above your height on the treadmill to the ceiling. Some brands will let you know how much clearance is needed. In addition to size, double-check the treadmill’s maximum weight capacity to ensure you can use it safely.

✔️ Running belt: Make sure that the length of the running track is at least 4 feet long. If you’re over 6 feet tall, then the belt size should be even longer — around 4.5 feet. Running on a belt that's too short for your body may put you at risk of injury.

sassos testing out treadmills in the good housekeeping institute

✔️ Speed: Some treadmills can go up to 12 mph or more, while others have a max speed closer to 8 mph. If you plan on running quickly, always double-check your treadmill’s max speed setting.

✔️ Incline/decline: Being able to adjust the incline on your walk or run is one of the best ways to replicate an outdoor environment. Some newer models even offer decline capabilities to mimic real-life terrain. I recommend walking instead of running on the decline setting when possible to help protect your joints.

✔️ Folding capability: Many treadmills on the market now offer some sort of folding feature, which can help save space when the treadmill is not in use. But not all foldable treadmills are created equal — some can collapse to the point where they can fit under a bed, whereas others simple fold upright for a bit more storage space. Most of the treadmills on this list do the latter, but if you're looking for super compact options our best foldable treadmills list features a nice variety of choices. In our tests though, I've noticed that the more foldable a treadmill is the less sturdy it tends to be.

✔️ Warranty: Check the treadmill’s warranty and prioritize products with a longer offering, especially for key parts like the motor or frame.

sassos accepting delivery of bowflex treadmill for testing

✔️ Special features: Features such as a touchscreen, built-in Bluetooth speakers and any other advanced settings will likely cost you extra. Decide whether you'll be satisfied with an LED display with standard buttons and controls or if you’d be happier with preset programs or a built-in screen offering on-demand workouts or training.

✔️ Set-up and delivery: Treadmills can be heavy and difficult to set up alone. Most offer options for expert assembly, but that typically comes with an additional fee. If you do plan to assemble the treadmill on your own, consider recruiting a handy friend or two to help. If you plan to move the treadmill to a basement or small room in your home, double-check that the dimensions will fit through narrow hallways and around tight corners.

What do I need to know before buying a treadmill?

line break

Double-check the weight capacity and dimensions to ensure the treadmill is the right fit for you and any other individuals who will be regularly using it. There also needs to be sufficient clearance around and above the treadmill (especially keep this in mind if you plan to workout on an incline). And double-check installation and if it is included or an additional fee — treadmills are typically heavy and complex to assemble on your own, so you may need to enlist the help of a friend or opt to have the company assemble it professionally in your home (often for an added fee).

What is the average life of a treadmill?

line break

There is no simple answer since this ultimately takes into account several factors, but the industry standard is roughly 7 to 10 years . If you take close care of your machine and perform regular maintenance on it then it may last even longer. Daily use will wear down the belt and may cause the machine to "age" faster. Check the company's warranty to see what they cover, as you may just need to simply replace a certain part instead of having to get a whole new machine altogether.

Are more expensive treadmills better?

line break

The phrase "you get what you pay for" isn't always true, but our evaluations did show that for the most part, price was a good determinant of how well-made the treadmills were . That's because more expensive models tend to offer additional special features, such as smart capabilities, on-demand workouts, streaming options and more. They also tend to be more substantial machines with a higher weight capacity and solid running belt. You'll even find certain models with significant incline ranges and the ability to decline. But if you don't need all of those bells and whistles, the more affordable options on our list are still high-quality with decent speed and incline ranges that will make for an effective workout.

Here's who could be responsible for paying for the Baltimore bridge disaster

  • The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after a container ship collided with it.
  • Several entities could be on the hook to foot the bill in the aftermath of the disaster.
  • The maritime insurance industry will likely be saddled with the highest costs.

Insider Today

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed on Tuesday after a large container ship ran into it, leading to six presumed deaths and millions of dollars in possible damage.

It's still too early to estimate the total economic impact of the disaster, but between the cost of rebuilding the decades-old bridge, compensating the victims' families , and paying out damages for disruptions to the supply chain, the eventual cost of the disaster is expected to be significant.

Who will pay to rebuild the bridge?

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday the federal government should be responsible for paying to reconstruct the damaged Francis Scott Key Bridge.

"It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect Congress to support my effort," Biden said.

The bridge was built in the 1970s for about $60 million, but the cost of rebuilding it could be 10 times its original price tag, an engineering expert told Sky News.

Baltimore is among the busiest ports in the nation , with more than a million shipping containers passing through each year. The collapse — which closed the port to all maritime and most road traffic until further notice — is already beginning to wreak havoc on the supply chain.

The cost of building the bridge back fast enough to offset diversions as much as possible could saddle the government with a more than $600 million bill, David MacKenzie, the chair of the engineering and architecture consultancy COWIfonden, told Sky News.

Who will pay for damages to the ship and its cargo?

The container ship, the Dali , is owned by a Singapore-based firm. The ship's charterer, Maersk, confirmed to Business Insider that vessel company Synergy Group operates the ship.

However, the companies with cargo aboard the Dali could ultimately be responsible for some of the ship's damages and cargo costs, according to Ryan Petersen , the CEO of the supply-chain-logistics company Flexport, which had two containers on the ship.

Related stories

The Dali was carrying 330 containers that must now be rerouted, Petersen said in an X thread.

An ancient maritime law known as " general average " dictates that companies with even a single container aboard a ship split certain damages pro rata based on the number of containers they had on board, ensuring all the stakeholders benefiting from the voyage are splitting the risk, Petersen said.

General average situations can occur when a ship is stranded or when cargo is damaged or thrown overboard to save the vessel, according to Flexport . The concept helps ensure that all parties who have a vested interest in the vessel share the cost and concern of protecting it.

It's too soon to know whether damages incurred to free the Dali in the coming days will qualify as a case of general average.

Who will pay for everything else?

The majority of the financial fallout is likely to lay primarily with the insurance industry, according to media reports.

Industry experts told the Financial Times that insurers could pay out losses for bridge damage, port disruption, and any loss of life.

The collapse could drive "one of the largest claims ever to hit the marine (re)insurance market," John Miklus, the president of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters, told Insurance Business.

He told the outlet that the loss of revenue from tolls while the bridge is being rebuilt will be expensive, as will any liability claims from deaths or injuries.

The Dali is covered by the Britannia Steam Ship Insurance Association Ltd., known as Britannia P&I Club, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.

In a statement to Business Insider, Britannia said it was "working closely with the ship manager and relevant authorities to establish the facts and to help ensure that this situation is dealt with quickly and professionally."

Britannia is one of 12 mutual insurers included in the International Group of P&I Clubs, which maintains more than $3 billion of reinsurance cover, sources familiar with the matter told Insurance Business.

Britannia itself is liable for the first $10 million in damages, both FT and Insurance Business reported. Whatever remains is dealt with by the wider mutual insurance group and Lloyd's of London, a reinsurance market in the UK, the FT reported.

Update: March 28, 2024 — This story has been updated to include additional information about general average and clarify that it is too soon to know whether general average will apply in the case of the Dali.

The perfect wardrobe will always include plenty of basics that fit really well and are made of high-quality materials. Whenever you find such a gem, especially on sale, I suggest buying multiples. That’s what former Strategist senior editor Anthony Rotunno did back in 2019 after he was gifted one of these Baird McNutt Irish linen shirts from J.Crew . The button-down shirts, select colors of which are 25 percent off today, have the prep appeal of an Oxford shirt with a more relaxed summer-in-Sicily — or Galway — vibe. They are made from Irish linen woven at a mill that dates back to 1912, and Rotunno describes the fabric as “light without feeling insignificant” and comfortable against his skin. The shirt is a already a good value at its original price of $98, but at this discounted price I’d call it a Very Good Deal. J.Crew sells the shirt in 15 different colors, five of which are on sale: a warm pebble gray, Amalfi blue, mini houndstooth, black, and the same deep indigo shade that Rotunno wrote about in 2019.
