3-Star Russian River Cruise - St. Petersburg - Golden Ring - Moscow - 11 Days (CR-01)

RiverCruise.com

Volga River

Two spectacular cities, St. Petersburg and Moscow, are showcased on Volga River cruises. These itineraries also venture into the Moscow Canal and other Russian waterways, like the Neva and Svir rivers.

In St. Petersburg, considered to be Russia's cultural capital, you'll visit the Hermitage museum, St. Isaac's Cathedral, Nevsky Prospekt and the Peter and Paul Fortress. Treasures to see in Moscow include sweeping Red Square, St. Basil's Cathedral with its candy-colored onion domes, and the crown jewels of the Armory Museum in the red-brick Kremlin.

Many cruises visit Kizhi Island, known for its unique collection of wooden structures, including a cathedral of 22 domes that was constructed without the use of a single nail. Uglich is one of the oldest towns in Russia, and here you'll see the Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood, built on the site where Ivan the Terrible's son was killed. Disembark in Yaroslavl to shop for handcrafted souvenirs and view the detailed frescoes and icons of the Church of St. Elijah the Prophet.

You'll gain a deeper understanding of Russia's culture and history, as guides in each destination share expert knowledge and point out significant sights. Often, a performance of Russian folkloric music is provided on board the ship. Itineraries typically include hotel stays in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Your hotel and riverboat accommodations, many meals and sightseeing excursions are covered in one rate.

What to pack

Russian weather is unpredictable, so packing water-resistant jacket, and warm clothes won't be superflouos.

Most Russia citizens do not speak English, learning a few phrases would give you an advantage and help you navigate better.

You might also want to have some local currency on hand; the currency in Russia is Rubles.

How much to tip

Tipping is not required in Russia, but it's considered good etiquette, tip 10%-15% of your bill.

The average summer temperature is approx 18°C (64°F), and winter is around -6°C (22°F).

Some of the most popular souvenirs from the Volga Cruise are wood carvings, linen goods.

Best Volga River Sights

Velikiy Novgorod - one of Russia’s oldest cities with numerous medieval monuments that have made it to our days.

Mandrogi is a town of tradition and folklore renown for homemade vodka, horse-draw carriages and unique craftwork.

I am very satisfied.

I have been using the Firebirds (Travel All Russia) services for a while. I am very satisfied.

We enjoyed the whole trip a lot

Overall we enjoyed the whole trip a lot. Moscow is beautiful and clean. Thank you very much for your patience and excellent organization of this tour. Everything ran very smoothly and according to schedule. The guides met us on time at hotels or at our train carriage on arrival. They all spoke good English, had a good local knowledge and were very kind and helpful.

The tour lived up to all expectations

I’m most pleased with Travel All Russia in arranging our ‘Volga Dream’ Russia tour, I would recommend using your services again as every aspect of our tour went off without a hitch. The communication between our tour representative was excellent as we required additional days on both ends of our tour. The visa process and the logistics were flawlessly implemented.

Best and worry-free travel to Russia! - Treasures of Two Capitals Tour

When my husband and I decided we wanted to travel Russia, I did my research and came across Travel All Russia which had very good reviews. It certainly did not disappoint. We chose the Treasures of Two Capitals tour. Booking and coordinating with them were seamless from start to finish. Questions were promptly answered, either through email or a phone call and changes if any, were quickly updated.

I am overwhelmingly satisfied and would unhesitantly and highly recommend TRAVELALLRUSSIA!!! 5 STARS!!!

This trip was AMAZING!!! Positively life-changing!!! Russia is a wonderful country!!! it is everything I imagined and more!!! The funny thing is after only a week and a half in, I find myself homesick and I miss Russia so much!!! The people, culture, and history truly are wonderful. Our guide was very charming, personable and informative.

I am happy to say that everything provided by Travel All Russia met or exceeded our expectations

We are now back from Europe and the tour in Russia was a large part of that. We had reservations about using an "internet" travel service with which we had no previous relationship. I am happy to say that everything provided by Travel All Russia met or exceeded our expectations.

The whole experience was nothing short of amazing

Just wanted to take a quick moment to thank you for putting together such an amazing trip! The tour guides and drivers were beyond incredible, and I would highly recommend all four of them. They were beyond accommodating, extremely knowledgable, relatable, interesting, and friendly. In addition, the transportation was amazing.

I cannot begin to applaud your tour of the TWO CAPITALS in Russia!

I cannot begin to applaud your tour of the TWO CAPITALS in Russia. It was 5 star all the way. We were met at the airport even though our luggage was lost and we had to fill out paperwork. The driver took us right to the St. Regis which was a gorgeous 5-star hotel Smack Dab in the center of Moscow. The city was clean, safe and easy to get around in.

Travel All Russia, truly is professional and a first class operation

Thank you for all your help in booking this wonderful part of our trip, the Volga Dream cruise. This has been the trip of a life time!! That is what my husband Tom and friends say...   And I agree, because every minute was beyond our expectations.

Travel All Russia, truly is professional and a first class operation. Beginning with you, the rest of the staff aboard the Volga Dream and those off the ship - we congratulate all of you!!

Our experience with Travel All Russia has been a most enjoyable and valuable one

Our experience with Travel All Russia has been a most enjoyable and valuable one. Let me give you a brief synopsis of it. All our drivers were skilled, courteous and drove very safely. On arrival at the hotel in Moscow (Ararat Park Hyatt Hotel) we were very impressed by its excellent appointments.

Eurasian Capitals Trans-Siberian Journey (June 2016)

Rich and I have had the most amazing trip around the world and much of it is thanks to your company! The activities you suggested along the way added so much to our enjoyment and appreciation of your country.

At every destination, a wonderful guide met us and with only one very minor exception, they were right on time without ever being reminded and they were so helpful and kind.

Not to mention that the hotels or lodges were exceptional, clean, comfortable and mostly very charming!

Tsars Gold Beijing Moscow June 2016

The trip went smoothly. The only glitch was our luggage lost for about a day and half before they found it and got it to Ulan Bator. The rail ride was interesting and we met people from all over the world and became good friends with many of them. The food on Tsar’s Gold was better than the Chinese train but after 9 days, it became a little repetitious and could use more spices.

A perfectly planned Venice of North trip (May 2016)

We had a wonderful time. It couldn't have been arranged better. The hotel was great, the guide and driver were wonderful. We were very happy with the sightseeing program. All in all it was a perfectly planned trip and we couldn't be more pleased. I would recommend you to anybody who wishes to go to Russia. Thank you for arranging such a wonderful experience for us.

I'd say to anyone who wants to travel to Russia - you must do Travel all Russia!!

We had a fantastic time. Our guide in Russia Svetlana was soo great. I can’t stop saying great things about her. Our driver, please forgive me but I can’t remember his name was so skilled and made everything seem like magic to get from place to place. We especially enjoyed Peterhof, despite the weather. Perhaps the best impression I can give you is a situation we had one morning when the line was especially long to get in, and it was raining and cold and I was a bit despairing of getting in before I got totally soaked.

Winter Treasures of Two Capitals with Helsinki Extension

Well, this truly was the trip of a lifetime.  We have traveled a lot but both agree this is the best one yet.  At every turn, your people were standing there with signs to greet us.  We had absolutely no problems with anything on the entire trip.

Only wonderful things to say about Travel All Russia!

Nancy and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Travel All Russia and our Classic Moscow & St. Petersburg tour! First, the driver was right there to meet us, was very nice, and we were glad to see him the next day. Our guide in Moscow was a font of information and a delightful person. We got a true sense of the country, it's history and it's pride.

I will always use Travel All Russia

It was a great trip. The drivers were always on time and very safe drivers. The guides were good everywhere. The guide in Moscow was very knowledgeable, had a nice personality and was always elegant in his appearance and in his thoughts. The guide in Vladimir and Suzdal was also excellent with different opinions which gave another view of Russia. It was very interesting.

Everything was so well organized; no detail was left undone

I wanted to commend your staff for providing us with an outstanding and most memorable trip to Russia. The Treasures of Two Capitals trip exceeded our expectations! Everything was so well organized; no detail was left undone. The tour guides were so well informed, but it was their passion and interest that instilled in us a great appreciation for Russia, its culture, and its people.

I would definitely recommend you guys to anyone I know that might travel to Russia

We had a great trip. It was my mom's first time out of the country and she absolutely loved it.

The Volga Dream Cruise cruise and tour itself was very well organized and the guides were great! The additional tours we took were also well worth it! We took a lot of photos and have a lot more memories.

I would definitely recommend you guys to anyone I know that might travel to Russia.

Thanks for all of your help!

We had a fantastic trip. Thank you!

We've experienced a lot on our MS Rostropovich River Cruise. To name a few, people, culture, arts, history, weather, lakes, canals, food, languages. We still talk about the trip to people we know and even just ourselves.

Due to the storm, we missed Goritsi and Uglich. What a pity! We were compensated for a free Moscow night and Metro ride. But I wish to have spent more time close enough to Russian country side. That night the ship went through the storm and arrived in Kizhi safely next morning. Great job! By the way the crew of the ship was a great team.

Thanks Travel All Russia for all your hard efforts! Bravo!

1) The hotels in St. Petersburg and Moscow were excellent as was their service. Likewise, the Volga Dream. The food was terrific too! 2) Airport taxi service was great (on time and comfortable). 3) The special trips
 especially the ballet
were great. 4) The guide in Moscow made Russian history and art come to life with his interesting stories. I could have spent several more days touring with him.The lectures on the Volga Dream about Russian Politics and Art were spellbinding.

The Volga Dream Cruise met or even exceeded our expectations

I really enjoyed the trip. We were very pleased with the hotels in St. Petersburg and Moscow. The accommodations were good and the breakfasts were lavish. But the best part was that both hotels were so well located.

The guides in both cities were knowledgeable. The Hermitage was so crowded that it made it difficult to see things, but I think we saw a good selection of city sites in the limited time available for the tours. I know several people in our group spent extra days in St. Petersburg and Moscow before and after our tour, and I wish we had done the same.

Volga River Cruises  From Moscow to St. Petersburg

Volga River cruises combine different waterways as they journey through Russia between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Itineraries begin and end in both cities, so your trip can begin on either the Neva River or the Moskva River.

If your cruise begins in Moscow, you will travel northward on the Moskva River to the Moscow Canal until your river boat meets the Volga River. Your cruise will continue along the Volga-Baltic Waterway joining three other bodies of water – Lake Onega, the Svir River and finally the Neva River by way of the Ladoga Canal. St. Petersburg is located on the Neva River.

The Bridge of the Emperor Peter I on Neva River in St. Petersburg, Russia

Cruises also begin in St. Petersburg and follow a route in the opposite direction beginning with the Neva River and ending with the Moskva River in Moscow.

Several river cruise lines offer a few itineraries on the Volga River.

Volga River Facts

The Volga River is one of several rivers that originate in the Valdai Hills of Russia – northwest of Moscow and is located entirely in Russia. It’s 2,300 miles long and is the longest river in Europe. Initially, it flows from west to east and then begins to flow in a southerly direction and eventually turning southeast before emptying into the Caspian Sea.

Part of the Volga River is included in the Volga-Baltic Waterway, which extends from Rybinsk (north of Moscow) to St. Petersburg and includes three other bodies of waters for Volga River Cruises. The major waterway is comprised of a series of canals, lakes and rivers that link the Volga River to the Baltic Sea.

It’s interesting to note that the Volga River freezes about three months out of the year. ï»ż

Volga River Cruise Destinations

On a Volga River cruise, you'll travel through six different inter-connected waterways between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The course of your journey will take you along the following waterways from Moscow to St. Petersburg or the other way around:

Moskva River > Moscow Canal > Volga River > Lake Onega > Svir River > Neva River

The Volga River begins its flow into the Volga-Baltic Waterway in Rybinsk, Russia near Yaroslavl.

Lake Onega is joined by the the Volga-Baltic Waterway near Kizhi, Russia. It is the 2nd largest river in Europe.

The Svir River provides a waterway between Europe’s two largest lakes—Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga.

The Neva River is connected to the Svir River through the Ladoga Canal.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site that could be in your itinerary:

Kizhi, Russia – Kizhi Pogost - Kizhi island located on Lake Onega The pogost is a fenced-in area that includes 2 large wooden churches: the 22-dome Transfiguration Church and the 9-dome Intercession Church and a belltower.

Viking River Cruises on Russia's Volga River

Take advantage of limited-time offers and special deals

Volga River Cruises to Russia - Viking River Cruises

Cruise through Russia with Viking River Cruises and discover a unique side of this storied nation. The people of Russia are committed and dedicated to their work, and as tourists you can see that in the fine craftsmanship of the palaces and intense performances of ballerinas at the Bolshoi ballet.

A river cruise in Russia is a prime example of the simple magnificence that is a river cruise. A Russia river cruise from Viking will take you to the country's two most prominent cities: Moscow and St. Petersburg. Rather than just staring at the elegant palaces of Catherine the Great or photographing iconic landmarks like the domed buildings in Red Square, you can observe the real heart and soul of Russia as you sail through the towns lining the Volga River. You’ll receive a different understanding of Russian life and culture when you cruise there with Viking River Cruises.

Along the way you will see stunning churches, a vibrant market and even a museum devoted to Russia's drink of choice - vodka. In Moscow you will have a chance to visit the Kremlin, and in St. Petersburg you will be surrounded by pastel colored 18th century buildings – and don't leave without a trip to the Hermitage Museum, home to more than three million works of art!

When you aren’t in port, your exploration continues with fascinating lectures on the Russian Czars of the past and Russia's current leader, Vladimir Putin. While on land, Viking Rivers ensures that their passengers are treated to special demonstrations and exhibits. For instance, on some sailings they’ll arrange for a Russian cuisine workshop or ballet performance. Continue below for a sample of the best things to do on a Volga River cruise with Viking River Cruises:

Moscow's Red Square

  • Attend an evening Russian folklore show in Moscow, Russia where artists perform some of the nation’s traditional dance methods to folk music. Russia is full of artistic pride with a storied presence in many performing arts.
  • Enjoy a guided tour of Moscow to all the highlights – the famed Red Square, the mesmerizing Bolshoi Theater, the colorful St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Cosmonaut Museum and more.

Uglich, Russia

  • Visit the home of a local family in Uglich, Russia for afternoon tea and the chance to learn a bit of Russia’s history from those who lived it firsthand. This Golden Ring city also features the remarkable Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood.
  • Take advantage of your time in Yaroslavl to visit the covered market in search of the perfect souvenir to take back home. Also in Yaroslavl is the Church of St. Elijah the Prophet.

St. Isaac's Cathedral in Russia

  • Spend multiple days exploring St. Petersburg, highlighted by tours of Catherine’s Palace, the Hermitage Museum, St. Isaac’s Cathedral and the Fortress of Peter and Paul.
  • At the island town of Kizhi, Russia you can take a walking tour through the traditional wooden architecture, which you can learn even more about at the Open Air Museum of Architecture.

Pack your bags (and don't forget your camera) for a riveting Russian cruise with Viking River Cruises. Remember, for those who want to expand their trip, Viking offers packages that will allow you to further explore Moscow or St. Petersburg, or even experience Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Call your Cruise Web consultant today to book an exciting Viking river voyage through Russia.

Travelling Down the Volga

Photo by Sergey Semin on Unsplash

What to see on the Volga?

  • Ancient Slav Villages: Though many have sadly been abandoned, some of the Slav’s first settlements still live on. In wooden cottages which were built without a single nail, villagers continue their way of life undisturbed in Russia’s vast countryside.
  • The Romanovs’ Seat of Power: The picture-perfect town of Kostroma in the Golden Ring was the home of Russia’s Imperial family 500 years ago and in many ways it seems to be a part of an era when Tsars still ruled.
  • Mongol Bastions: The great cities of the Golden Horde stretched from China all the way to southern Russia. To this day, the Mongols’ influence can be seen in cities like Kazan and Samara, with cultures very distinct from that of western Russia.
  • Modern Russia: The Volga continues to play a central role in Russia. Great cities like Moscow, Volgograd (former Stalingrad) and Nizhny Novgorod still live in time to the ebbing of its tides.

Travelling down the Volga

With the world’s deepest lake and Europe’s longest river within its borders, Russia is the ideal country to be explored by cruise. The most famous  Russian river cruise trips undoubtedly travel down the Volga. When the Slavs emigrated from Kiev — marking the beginning of Russia as we know it — they chose the leafy forests around the Volga to settle in. While many of these first slavic settlements remained as quaint villages, a handful grew into Russia’s main medieval cities like Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan. Almost 1000 years later, the Volga is still the bloodline that keeps these cities alive. It also remains the best and, indeed, the only way of visiting all western Russia’s historic sites — stretching from the Caspian Sea to Moscow — in less than two weeks.

Regardless of the cruise (and there are many ), there are only two routes up the Volga. The longest, starts at the sultry city of Astrakhan on the Caspian sea. Cruises starting here take 14 days to sail up the Volga, stopping at many southern locations that few foreigners get to see. The second option is shorter, taking only 11 days. Setting off in Nizhny Novgorod, however, means that the journey only covers the European part of Russia which, while beautiful, is not nearly as diverse as the South.

The Jewels of the Volga River

1. astrakhan.

Photo by Fred Schaerli on Wikipedia

On the sun-kissed beaches of the Caspian Sea, an ancient Mongol city stands as a living testimony to Russia’s diversity. Unlike some of Russia’s glitzier cities, this city provides a truly authentic picture of Russia; with both old and new, poor and prosperous, Muslim and Orthodox districts. All cruises departing from Astrakhan start with a tour of its pearly-white Kremlin built by Ivan the Terrible before setting off for Volgograd.

2. Volgograd

Photo by Dmitry Antropov on Unsplash

In the South’s main city (which is better known by its former name, Stalingrad) the world’s tallest statue of a woman stands proudly. ‘The Motherland Calls’ is a staggering reminder of the hardships Stalingrad suffered during WW2. Along with visiting the statue, cruises stopping here include an excursion to the tens of thousands of soldiers’ graves and other somber war memorials to be found in what once was a city at the epicenter of WW2.

3. Southern Cultural Centers

Saratov and Samara have more similarities than just their names. Both are exceptionally cultured cities; with Russia’s oldest circus, a renowned provincial art gallery and a most unusual manor house (named the House with Elephants) tucked within their rather unassuming cityscapes. Panoramic tours of both cities will uncover these treasures and all cruises include an in-depth excursion to Samara’s classical art museum.

4. Kazan & the Chuvash Republic

Photo by nour tayeh on Unsplash

The last and greatest of the truly southern cities on the Volga is Kazan. As the capital of Tatarstan, it is home to exquisite mosques and historic outdoor markets along with Orthodox Christianity’s most important cathedral. Both geographically and culturally, it is the place where East meets West. Cheboksary, the next stop, doesn’t boast a 500 year old kremlin like Kazan. However, the distinctive culture and language of the Chuvash people make this agrarian town, famed for its beer and tractors, a fascinating place to visit.

5. Nizhny Novgorod

Photo by Daniel Ioanu on Unsplash

The traditional brick-red walls of the Nizhny Novgorod kremlin on the banks of the Volga mark the beginning of western Russia. All the traditional symbols of Russia, from multi-colored cupolas to log houses, can be found in the city. Tours of this city could include admiring Repin’s works in the city’s art gallery to riding on the cable car that stretches over the Volga and which the city’s residents use as a bus!

Additional Stops

  • The Nizhny Novgorod - Moscow route, while missing out on Russia’s vibrant southern cities, allows for a fuller understanding of ancient Rus’ by stopping at some of the key slavic settlements that are sadly overlooked by most travelers. These towns include:
  • Gorodets: A village of artists which produce the most prized traditional Russian crafts, like painstakingly painted matryoshkas as well as pryaniki, a form of gingerbread that is so ornate that it is considered art.
  • Plyos: This town of less than 2,000 people has attracted notable people for centuries simply due to the beauty of its rolling hills and misty forests. Though today the owners of the town’s picturesque dachas are rather dull billionaires, in the 19th century this village was teeming with artists including Russia’s most celebrated landscape painter, Isaak Levitan.
  • Myshkin: Named after a mouse which saved a prince, this village is very mice — literally. Almost all the village’s buildings have some sort of connection with mice and, yes, it is ever so slightly reminiscent of Disney Land. Tiny museums, such as the valenki and vodka museums, can be found all over the village.

The Volga River, Europe's longest river, is by far Russia's most important waterway. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with your cruise from Moscow to Astrakhan because Vodohod company includes visits to wonderful cities along the Volga into your excursion program. Taking a cruise with Vodohod is a unique opportunity to see the most popular cities in Russia and to get acquainted with their inimitable charm, history and lifestyle.

The Volga has always been a major route connecting north and south. It is navigable from the town of Rzhev downstream. In the town of Tver it is 200 meters wide. Forty cities and towns, and 1,000 smaller settlements, lie along it, most of them on the high right bank, including Tver, Rybinsk, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Ulianovsk, Samara, Saratov, Volgograd (Stalingrad, Tsaritsyn before 1917) and Astrakhan.

The river forms a wide delta, receiving water from some 200 tributaries (long rivers, small streams and brooks). Draining two thirds of European Russia and nearly a third of Europe and known to Russians as "Mother Volga," it is of great importance and economic value to Russia. Navigable nearly its entire length, it is the country's main commercial waterway, providing connections between the Baltic Sea, St. Petersburg, Moscow, the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. The waterway includes dams, locks, canals, reservoirs, it makes the river easy to navigate and generate some electricity.

The Volga basin supplies 25% of all of Russia’s crops and one-fifth of its industrial fishing and contains 70 species of fish. The Volga Delta (south of Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea) is home to over 200 different kinds of bird and wild boar, foxes, beavers, muskrats and 30 other animals. In summer, the area comes alive with color and carpets of pink and white lotus flowers bloom.

To journey along the Volga with Vodohod, floating at night under star-spangled skies and cutting through autumn morning mists is to taste the splendid spirit of Russia.
