While just about any month is great to visit Croatia and Slovenia, there are a few prime times of the year for the Discover Croatia, Slovenia and the Adriatic Coast tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.
Spring: Spring is a wonderful time to visit Croatia and Slovenia with charming towns waking up from a winter slumber. Plitvice Lakes National Park is beautiful in springtime with blooming wildflowers and higher water levels. Enjoy the region’s bounty of seasonal fruits and vegetables such as asparagus, artichokes, and strawberries.
Summer: With beautiful weather, summer is a great time visit and enjoy the outdoors. Summer in Croatia can be very hot, so it’s an ideal time of year to enjoy coastal areas or perhaps some swimming.
Fall: In autumn, temperatures start to go down, just like the crowds. The sea is still warm, the foliage begins to turn, and some of the finest seasonal products such as olive oil are ready to be tasted. October is the best time to visit Plitvice Lakes as the crowds are smaller and nature’s colors are incredible.

Travel to the historic town of Trogir. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this coastal gem is renowned for its picturesque Venetian architecture. Trogir is set on a small island but is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Located within medieval walls, admire the prominent stone houses and scenic charm as you tour this historic city with a local guide. Visit the 13th-century Cathedral of St. Lawrence and admire the sweeping views from its bell tower. Enjoy free time to discover the city’s hidden nooks and crannies. Perhaps you’ll sit along the seaside promenade and admire boats slowly meandering by, or consider enjoying a bite to eat in a local café or restaurant. Although Trogir may be small in size, it makes up for it with its overflowing culture.
Depart Zagreb and head into the beautiful Croatian countryside of Zagorje known for its picturesque, gentle hills full of green forests, vineyards and cultivated fields. Begin by visiting historic Kumrovec, the birthplace of Josip Broz Tito, lifetime president of the former Yugoslavia. A visit to the ethno village there is like stepping back in time as you stroll the small houses of the beautiful “Old Village.” Continue on to the delightful little town of Samobor, well-known as a foodie favorite. After a short tour, enjoy lunch in a local restaurant which ends with the famous Samoborske-Kremsnite, a Croatian delicacy of cake with custard cream. You will also sample Bermet, the aromatic, sweet and bitter wine made according to a centuries old secret recipe that is perhaps the most authentic Croatian drink.
Embark on a journey to the charming village of Ljuta where tradition and flavor come together by the river and Old Mill. Upon your arrival to the venue, receive a warm welcome from the hosts dressed in Croatian traditional clothing and enjoy the drink of your choice. Whether it be homemade liquors or brandy, flavors of locally dried figs and candied almonds make the perfect pairing. Continue exploring the Old Mill and discover insights into the art of flour production as you witness the process that keeps this historical mill alive today. Continue your day with a scenic drive to the tranquil village of Zasolje where you'll arrive at the family estate. Step into the world of olive oil production and learn the secrets behind this Mediterranean staple before indulging in a locally prepared feast. Savor dishes of smoked ham, prosciutto, cheese, olive oil, homemade bread, fresh vegetables, and much more before departing the family estate. Comfortable walking shoes are encouraged.

Once docked, you'll get an orientation of the Old Town where you can find more legends, tales and monuments than anywhere else. Listen to the story of the stone walls, which were built over two centuries ago. Meet the group for dinner and sunset cocktails in a 16th century fort tower looking out to sea. Stunning!

Interspersing famous city landmarks with fabulous natural landscapes, and including island and inland national parks, this unhurried tour is a lovely introduction to Croatia’s coastal attractions, staying on land in Split, Korcula, and Dubrovnik
Experience Croatia’s sights and scenery from a different perspective on this seven-day break. While many a tour sees the coastline from a cruise vessel, this one is land-based, seeing the sea from the cities on-shore, and taking ferry crossings to three of the country’s sprinkled islands. A happy balance of guided tours and leisure time, it allows for a more immersive insight of Croatia’s culture, character, and cuisine, and rather than restricting you to ship or hotel fare, it leaves you free to choose a venue and menu for lunch and dinner in each of the three featured destinations. The first is the UNESCO listed city of Split, where an enclave of ancient architecture is now the hub of modern daily life. From here we visit tiny Trogir, an island bridged to the mainland, its old town a labyrinth of little lanes; and discover the beauty of Krka National Park, spreading from the coast to the mountains in a medley of monasteries and gorges. We sail for a stay on the island of Korcula, where olive groves back the 14th-century town, and visit Mljet island, with pine forests and a pair of lakes; and our final base is Dubrovnik, its medieval core paved in pale stone, beautiful from a distance, beguiling from within.
- Split - 3 nights
- Korcula - 2 nights
- Dubrovnik - 2 nights
Tour Highlights
- Discover splendid Split
- Wander through Krka National Park
- Enjoy staying on Korcula Island
- Be mesmerised by Mljet
- Taste oysters and wine in Ston
- Explore historic Dubrovnik
Fly from London to Split, and transfer to the 4-star Hotel Cvita for a welcome drink on arrival, and a three-night stay. Croatia’s ‘second city’, Split is an intermingling of ancient and modern, with its back against Croatia’s coastal mountains, its toes in the waters of the Adriatic, and its ‘Riva’ promenade studded with palms and glitzy bars.
Key: B - Breakfast L - Lunch D - Dinner
- Itinerary -
This morning, a guided walking tour of Split includes the magnificent Diocletian’s Palace, an enormous ensemble which is more like a fortified Old Town, thronged with shops, markets, and al fresco cafés, and claiming the world’s oldest Cathedral, St Domnius, built 295-305AD. After lunch at a local restaurant, the tour continues just around the bay on the little island of Trogir, linked by a bridge to the mainland, to explore the UNESCO World Heritage town, where medieval monuments include the Romanesque portal of St Lawrence Cathedral and the 15th-century Kamerlengo Fortress on the waterfront, a governor’s palace in Venetian times. (B, L)
Travel by road to Lozovac, the entry point to Krka National Park, it’s forestry and lush greenery spread around 73km of the Krka River, its topography attracting 200 species of birds. The park is famed for its secluded monasteries and for its splendid waterfalls. A guided tour takes you to the Stradinski Buk, a series of 17 waterfalls, flanked by traditional watermills. (B)
Sit back and enjoy the scenery today as you travel by road from Split, crossing the Peljesac Bridge enroute to Orebic, where we take the ferry to Korcula Island, the reputed birthplace of Marco Polo. Your afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the hotel facilities or explore the island, cloaked in woodlands and vineyards, and known for its local white wine. Two nights at the 4-star Marko Polo Hotel by Aminess (Sep/Oct), a short stroll from a beach, or 4-star Aminess Liburna Hotel (May/Jun), at the water’s edge. (B)
Covering a little promontory, Korcula town is often described as Dubrovnik in miniature, its 13th-century houses topped with bright tiles, built in a fishbone layout to deflect sea winds, encircled by defensive walls and towers, and focused on the 15th-16th century St. Mark’s cathedral. A walking tour of the town is followed by a boat trip to the unspoilt, uncrowded island of Mljet, to stroll by the salt lakes of its National Park, and sail on one of the lakes to see the Benedictine monastery on St. Mary’s Isle. Legend has it that Mljet’s air of peace and calm so captivated Odysseus that he stayed for seven years. We return to Korcula for a leisurely evening. (B)
Sail back to the mainland and drive to Ston, on the stunningly scenic Peljesac Peninsula. The medieval town is known for its salt pans, oysters, and 15th-century city walls, studded with towers. Enjoy an oyster and wine tasting before continuing to Dubrovnik, ‘the Pearl of the Adriatic’, for two nights at the 4-star Grand Hotel Park, close to Lapad Beach, in the city’s modern suburbs. (B)
A morning tour of Dubrovnik’s historic heart shows you landmark monuments, including Renaissance and Gothic palaces, Orlando’s Column, Onofrio’s Fountain, and the Baroque church of St Blaise, the city’s patron saint. Some places may seem familiar as they formed the filming locations for scenes in Star Wars and Game of Thrones. After free time for lunch, we sail from the ancient Old Town harbour to the nature reserve of Lokrum Island, where a shaded ‘Path of Paradise’ wanders through forests of Holm Oak and Manna Ash, among 400 species of flora; and monuments include monastery cloisters, the stone pool of Charlotte’s Well, and the 19th-century fortress on the islands highest peak. Return to the hotel to freshen-up before a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. (B, D)
Transfer to the airport for your return flight. (B)
This itinerary includes many visits on foot including some uneven surfaces and inclines.
