Lough Erne Resort’s spectacular Faldo Championship golf course will be thrust into the global spotlight when the PGA EuroPro Tour Championship Finale takes place from October 19-21.

Millions of people from right across the world are expected to watch the action which is being televised on Sky Sports Golf. The event is open to the general public free of charge and there are no tickets required for entry.

“This will be a historic moment for Lough Erne Resort as it’s the first time we will have hosted a week-long professional tournament on the Faldo Course, renowned as being one of the top parklands courses in the UK and Ireland,” says Barry McCauley, Golf Operations Manager at Lough Erne.

“Our team has been working tirelessly with the EuroPro Final Tournament Directors to ensure everything is ready.

“Over the last few years, we have made significant investments in our golf facilities, and we are excited to be able to showcase this on a global stage for golf professionals and enthusiasts alike.”

Everybody at Lough Erne will be hoping for a big home showing to entice the crowds and with just five Challenge Tour cards on offer via the Order of Merit, our small island has been punching above its weight again in 2022.

Ballymena’s Dermot McElroy looks all but assured of one of the five coveted cards. The 29-year old has enjoyed a superbly consistent campaign, claiming victory at the CPG Classic in July while also finishing second no fewer than four times from just 10 starts.

Having banked £34,316.67, McElroy sits third on the Order of Merit but with the prize money doubled for the Lough Erne Grand Final, and less than £800 between himself and money-list leader James Allan, McElroy is eager for one more big week to finish the job in top spot on the standings.

“I’m in a great position but I’d like to finish first because you’re first in that category then for next year on the Challenge Tour,” said McElroy.

“Last year you would’ve missed out on South Africa because the events are co-sanctioned. You’re up against three other mini-tours who offer cards for top-5 so if you’re fifth on EuroPro, you could be 15 th in that category. I’m only £800 behind so it would be nice to finish off the year as number one.

“Top-5 was my goal at the start of the year. The depth on EuroPro is really good. It’s a tough wee tour and only the top-5 from 156 players progress at the end of a long season so it would be a great achievement to do that.

“I want to progress my career into higher ranking events. My goal is to get onto the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour one day and I can only get there by progressing up the ranks and this was a big first step on that journey.”

The local boy McElroy hasn’t played Lough Erne since it first opened in 2010 but he fully intends to reacquaint himself with its plush surrounds, and he’ll have another top-5 challenger in Stuart Grehan to bounce ideas off in preparation for the Grand Final, too.

A dominating feature of the 7,071-yard Faldo layout is the spectacular views of Lough Erne, sights Grehan intends on making extremely familiar as he ramps up his own preparations ahead of October’s finale.

The Tullamore star is targeting a late season surge into the all-important top-5 on the Order of Merit off the back of a maiden win at the Spey Valley Championship.

“It would mean a lot to get onto the Challenge Tour. I have had a tough couple of years and it would mean so much to get there,” said Grehan who came through a 7-hole playoff to beat McElroy to his first EuroPro victory.

“Obviously having the Tour Championship in Lough Erne is massive. It’s on home soil, I’ll have a caddie that week and I’ll get good prep in so I see that as a huge opportunity, especially with the money being pretty much double.”

Grehan now finds himself in seventh spot on the money-list having bypassed invites to the Challenge Tour to focus his energy on his EuroPro exploits. With £22,145.67 to his name so far, he trails Ryan Brooks in fifth place by £4,000, but with £25,000 going to the winner at Lough Erne, Grehan has every chance to bridge that gap. And having also tasted victory at the €100,000 K Club Pro-Am on the Irish region this summer, he is taking no shortage of confidence into the EuroPro’s cash prize bonanza.

“The win doesn’t change anything, it’s just a confidence boost for me,” Grehan said.

“I’ve been playing really solid golf since the K Club. Winning there gave me a lot of confidence, but more so validation that I’m doing the right things.

“To win again is great, and I just need to keep that going and hope that come the end of the season, I’ll get my rewards.”

Grehan hopes a return to familiar pastures might just pay dividends in his push to join McElroy inside the coveted top-5, and given there are just five Challenge Tour cards on offer each year, how remarkable would it be if our small island managed to claim two of them in the curtain-closer at Lough Erne.

“I’m a big fan of Lough Erne. I played Faldo Series there under-20s,” Grehan recalled.

“I know it’s been a while but I know the course. I know they’ve invested heavily in the Resort and I’m sure it’s going to provide a fitting end to the season.”

Should Grehan fall short of his top-5 target, he also has a date with DP World Tour Q-School to look forward to. Now a Sales Assistant at McGuirks, Grehan will hope full-time golf awaits in his future but whatever happens results-wise from now until year’s end, the highly promising Tullamore talent will take confidence into 2023 having turned a corner with his game at long last.

“I won’t make a call on next year until my season finishes, so hopefully at the end of November. Unless I get a full DP World Tour card though, I’ll definitely work over the winter,” Grehan said.

“I’m going to Q-School and I’ll probably take a look at Asian Tour Q-School as well. The money there is obviously excellent so that’s another option but first and foremost, I’m focussing on Lough Erne and that top-5.

“For the last few years I’ve been searching for all the answers. This year I haven’t been second guessing myself which has been huge. I’m going to the events excited to play them rather than wondering what’s going to come out this week. I’ve had a clearer mind and thankfully that’s resulted in some good golf along the way.”

With a £102,460 prize fund at Lough Erne, and £25,000 to the winner, it’s also not beyond the realms of possibility that a bolter from the pack spoils the party for some of the season’s more consistent campaigner.

Whitehead’s John Ross Galbraith will need to win if he’s to jump from 29th place and inside the top-5 but it’s mathematically possible, and golf’s a funny game.

Ronan Mullarney (57th) is the last of the Irish challengers in the 60-man field and you can be sure the Galway man will be looking to spring an upset and have the last laugh in Enniskillen come tournament week.

EuroPro Tour ‘Hunting’ for big finish at Slaley Hall

Slaley Hall has been handed an unexpected opportunity to end the season in style after being chosen to host the grand finale of Europe’s leading developmental golf tour, the PGA EuroPro Tour .

The 2021 Matchroom Tour Championship, which was originally scheduled to be held at Club de Golf Alcanada, Mallorca, will now take place on Slaley Hall’s Hunting Course from October 20-22.

Daniel Godding, PGA EuroPro Tour CEO, said: “We are exceptionally sad not to be visiting the wonderful coastline of Mallorca and the phenomenal venue that is Alcanada in 2021. We thank Alcanada for all the preparations they have made to welcome us, and we look forward to visiting the golf course in 2022.

“We are delighted to be offering such a high-profile course and one of the UK’s best golf venues in replacement of Club de Golf Alcanada for this year’s tournament.”

PGA EuroPro Tour included in Official World Golf Rankings

Winners on the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour are to earn points towards the Official World Golf Ranking starting from this week’s Wealth Design Invitational.

The PGA EuroPro Tour, along with the other three third-tier satellite tours in Europe, will enter the OWGR system from this week, with a minimum level of four points awarded to first place in a 54-hole event.

The winner of the Wealth Design Invitational, to be staged at Hawkstone Park Golf Club this week, will be the first EuroPro champion to earn Official World Golf Ranking points. Players finishing in the top four will all earn points.

The winner of the Clipper Logistics Players Championship at Moor Allerton Golf Club in August, the first 72-hole event to be played on a European Tour third-tier satellite, will earn six OWGR points with the top six golfers all earning OWGR points.

OWGR Points Breakdown for HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour events:

Official Events from the leading professional tours from around the world are eligible for Ranking Points which are awarded according to the tournaments strength of field and the players finishing position.

The World Ranking Points for each player are accumulated over a two year “rolling” period with the points awarded for each event maintained for a 13-week period to place additional emphasis on recent performances.

Ranking points are then reduced in equal decrements for the remaining 91 weeks of the two year Ranking period. Each player is then ranked according to his average points per tournament, which is determined by dividing his total number of points by the tournaments he has played over that two-year period.

There is a minimum divisor of 40 tournaments over the two year ranking period and a maximum divisor of a player’s last 52 events.

Rory McIlroy is currently the world ranked No.1 golfer, with Jordan Spieth ranked second and Bubba Watson third.

The PGA EuroPro Tour is Europe’s leading development tour, and the European Tour’s satellite in the UK and Ireland.

Offering direct access to the Challenge Tour through the final Order of Merit, PGA EuroPro Tour players will compete for over £800,000 of prize money in 2015, with the top five golfers at the end of the season awarded a category on the 2016 Challenge Tour.

Providing vital experience of life on tour, players will compete in 15 main events at some of the UK and Ireland’s premier golfing venues, including Celtic Manor, Prince’s, Chart Hills and The Carrick on Loch Lomond.

The season concludes with the Tour’s top 60 players contending the Tour Championship. Players qualify to play on the HotelPlanner.com PGA EuroPro Tour either through a two-stage Qualifying School in the spring, or thanks to their 2014 achievements.

2024 RBC Heritage leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler nears fourth win in five starts with event to finish Monday

Weather prevented the final round from completing, but scheffler is well on his way to continuing his hot streak.

Scottie Scheffler's fourth victory in his last five tournaments will have to wait one more day. With the 2024 RBC Heritage experiencing more than a 2.5-hour weather delay Sunday, tournament action was unable to be completed before nightfall; it will instead leak into the work week. The final round at Harbour Town Golf Links will resume Monday at 8 a.m. ET with Scheffler holding a five-stroke lead at 20 under.

The world No. 1 is well clear of his nearest pursuer, Wyndham Clark, with three holes left in his tournament. Clark, meanwhile, is in the clubhouse at 15 under hoping for another runner-up check behind Scheffler. Others on the golf course like J.T. Poston, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala stand at that same number with holes to play.

Monday morning may only be a formality as Scheffler looks to be in control of just about everything -- like he has been the last two months.

Scheffler began Sunday in Hilton Head Island with one arm already slipped in the tartan jacket. Possessing a one-stroke lead, the Texan was crowned by many late Saturday evening despite the bevy of stars who had plans to upend him.

After knocking in a 6-foot par save on the 1st, Scheffler more or less turned those predictions into a reality. Chipping in for eagle on the par-5 2nd from long of the green (his 11th hole-out from off the green this season), Scheffler opened a three-stroke lead on the field and never looked back.

Charges were made by many, including a familiar foe in Clark, but none were that threatening. The reigning U.S. Open champion turned in 7-under 29 and tacked on another birdie on the 11th to get within one of Scheffler, but the pressure of perfection proved too much.

Hitting a tree with his second shot on No. 12, Clark's ball ricocheted out of bounds and led to a double bogey. Another dropped shot came on the following hole and all but secured another near miss from the U.S. Open champion.

Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg, Cantlay and Theegala all hovered on the first page of the leaderboard but never truly threatened. Instead, it was Patrick Rodgers who emerged as Scheffler's greatest threat thanks to an eagle-2 at the turn. A bogey a few holes later put an end to his Cinderella story.

Remaining in the wake of mistakes was a spotless Scheffler at 19 under, four ahead of the field. Turning in 3 under, the steadiest man in the game marched forward with a heavy diet of fairways and greens before a spell of thunderstorms halted his momentum on the par-4 12th.

Inclement weather was all that could stop Scheffler as the 27-year-old returned to the golf course more than two hours later and resumed his round without a hitch. While temperatures cooled and winds freshened, Scheffler was unaffected.

He picked off a birdie on the 13th to push his lead to five before a mud ball on the 15th led to his second finding the water on the par 5. It didn't matter as Scheffler launched a pitching wedge onto the surface, spinning it left and utilizing the slope to access the tucked pin. He avoided what would have been his first dropped shot since the 3rd hole on Thursday with an emphatic par save, and he will sleep easy Sunday night knowing five strokes separate him from the field and three holes separate him from victory.

Play called for evening

The final group is on the green on the par-5 15th meaning they will have three holes to play on Monday. Scottie Scheffler faces a par putt from 10 feet to maintain his five-stroke lead as he stands at 20 under.

Five clear with five to go!

The only thing that can stop him is the sunlight at this rate. Scottie Scheffler adds a birdie on 13 to get to 20 under and five clear of the crew at 15 under. Without the world No. 1 this tournament would be very, very good, but alas they are all fighting for first flight honors it appears.

Conditions are considerably harder for these guys. The wind has switched, it's about 10 degrees cooler and they are racing against the clock. Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka make par on No. 12 and head to the par-4 13th. Wyndham Clark posts the clubhouse lead at 15 under, four behind Scheffler.

Let's play ball!

Players are on the golf course and play is set to resume. Scottie Scheffler in the final pairing has about 7.5 holes remaining and one hour until sunset meaning this thing is probably going to leak into Monday unfortunately. 

Play to resume at 7 p.m.

The expectation is this thing will be finished today as the range is open and play is set to resume in 40 minutes at 6 p.m. ET. This will leave Scottie Scheffler a couple hours to complete just about seven holes as he left off in the middle of the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under.

Play suspended due to weather

The horn has sounded at 4:28 p.m. ET as a large weather system (with lightning) has engulfed Harbour Town. This comes as Scottie Scheffler stands in the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under over a number of pursuers up ahead of him on the golf course. Players are being brought back into the clubhouse as rules officials make an assessment on when play will return.

Rain comin' down hard

Scheffler turns in 33 with three-stroke lead.

Scheffler lets a chance slide by on the short ninth and will instead settle for a 3-under 33 on his front nine. It was highlighted by his eagle-3 on the par-5 2nd and Scheffler will head to the back side with a three-stroke edge.

Theegala thriving

Theegala cards four 3s in a row to end his front nine and get within four of Scottie Scheffler. Sahith spoke yesterday about how cool it is what Scheffler is currently doing and how it is a motivating factor for someone like him to get better. It's a great perspective and Theegala continues to get better and better, but it may not be enough this week as he is four behind with nine to go.

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Three-time PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele held off a fast finishing Louis Oosthuizen to win the LIV Golf Adelaide tournament at The Grange Golf Club by one stoke.

The 41-year-old Steele shot a final round 68 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 18-under 198 to earn his first victory since he won his second Safeway Open in 2017 on the PGA Tour.

Steele had a streak of five consecutive birdies early in the round, before some putting jitters appeared in his back nine to open the door for a fast finishing pack of challenges including Oosthuizen, and former previous Masters winners Charl Schwartzel (64) and Jon Rahm (64).

“Yeah, I was telling myself that I knew there was going to be hard moments today regardless of the result and that I just needed to get back in there and start playing with freedom again,” Steele said moments after winning.

“And, and I was able to hit some good shots after that and write the show.”

South Africa’s Oosthuizen shot 65 to finish second at 17-under 199, and had drawn within one stroke of Steele late in Sunday’s final round, only for the American to make some clutch pars in the final holes to clinch victory.

Brendan Steele wins LIV Golf Adelaide tournament from fast-finishing Louis Oosthuizen

ADELAIDE, Australia — Three-time PGA Tour winner Brendan Steele held off a fast finishing Louis Oosthuizen to win the LIV Golf Adelaide tournament at The Grange Golf Club by one stoke.

The 41-year-old Steele shot a final round 68 Sunday for a 54-hole total of 18-under 198 to earn his first victory since he won his second Safeway Open in 2017 on the PGA Tour.

Steele had a streak of five consecutive birdies early in the round, before some putting jitters appeared in his back nine to open the door for a fast finishing pack of challenges including Oosthuizen, and former previous Masters winners Charl Schwartzel (64) and Jon Rahm (64).

“Yeah, I was telling myself that I knew there was going to be hard moments today regardless of the result and that I just needed to get back in there and start playing with freedom again,” Steele said moments after winning.

“And, and I was able to hit some good shots after that and write the show.”

South Africa’s Oosthuizen shot 65 to finish second at 17-under 199, and had drawn within one stroke of Steele late in Sunday’s final round, only for the American to make some clutch pars in the final holes to clinch victory.

Tour of Turkey: Andresen scores third win in stage 7 sprint finish

DSM rider scores team's fifth win of the race ahead of Dupont and Weemaes

Just three days on from his first-ever professional victory, Tobias Lund Andresen (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) scored his third, going long in the sprint on stage 7 of the Tour of Turkey to win in İzmir.

The Dane looked set to lead out star sprinter Fabio Jakobsen , but kept pushing on to the line after launching 200 metres out to hold off Timothy Dupont (Tartoletto-Isorex) and Sacha Weemaes (Bingoal WB) to triumph.

DSM had been among the teams to set up the sprint – another hectic finish – inside the final kilometre, with the Dutch squad joined at the front by Polti-Kometa, Bingoal WB, and Astana Qazaqstan.

However, it looked like it was the Kazakhstani squad who had control on the final run to the line on the flat stage. Davide Ballerini and stage 2 winner Max Kanter led out Mark Cavendish in prime position, though the Manxman looked to suffer a chain problem just as the sprint was launched.

Beside him, Andresen was on his way, leading from the front with Dupont and Weemaes behind him. Jakobsen, however, was caught a little further back, leaving 21-year-old Andresen to keep flying towards the finish line and grab another well-deserved victory.

"That was a lead out. Fabio was behind my wheel. Everything was perfect and according to plan. Then he told me he got a bit squeezed so I had to go for it. I couldn't see anyone in my wheel and just went for my own sprint," Andresen said after the finish.

"I just hoped Fabio was in my slipstream and could come around me at the end. But when you get so close to the finish you just have to secure the win and cross the finish line first.

"This is massive. Three wins in one stage race. And with the team, our momentum is just perfect. We have five wins in seven stages and we're leading GC. It feels like a dream at the moment. GC is our priority. A GC win here will be massive.

"I'll hopefully go for it at the Giro. That race is something else. I don't want to get too cocky and too naive. We'll take it day by day and Fabio is showing great speed and great form. I think we have a really good opportunity with the him."

The stage, a mostly flat 125km run from Çeşme to İzmir, brought no changes to the general classification with another sprint in Istanbul rounding off the race on Sunday. Frank van den Broek (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) leads by four seconds from Merhawi Kudus (Terengganu), while Paul Double (Polti-Kometa) is third at nine seconds.

The green points jersey, meanwhile, passes shoulders from stage 3 winner Giovanni Lonardi (Polti-Kometa) to stage winner Andresen, who now looks to be the favourite to secure it on Sunday's slightly trickier uphill sprint in Istanbul.

Many of the stars of the 2019 EuroPro Tour season got a chance to tee it up on the European Challenge Tour in 2020, but 2021 will give them an opportunity to play a full season on the Road to Mallorca.

The EuroPro Tour is one of four Satellite Tours where the the top five players on the season-long Order of Merit earn Challenge Tour cards for the following season. Here are five players to look out for on the Road to Mallorca in 2021...

Mikael Lundberg

A former European Tour regular and multiple winner, Lundberg returns to Challenge Tour action after topping the 2019 EuroPro Tour Order of Merit.

The Swede is a familiar face on the circuit, having captured his first Challenge Tour victory back in 1997, and will be able to utilise over two decades of experience as he looks to continue his climb back to the European Tour this season.

A proven winner, the 47-year-old has three European Tour titles to his name, most recently at the 2014 Lyoness Open powered by Greenfinity, alongside two Challenge Tour titles.

Lundberg continued to demonstrate that winning mentality on the EuroPro Tour in 2019 with two victories, including at the season ending PGA EuroPro Tour Championship, in Spain.

Marco Penge

Penge is one of four Englishmen to earn Challenge Tour playing privileges via the EuroPro Tour after finishing third on the satellite tour’s Order of Merit.

The 22-year-old made his Challenge Tour debut in 2020 and, although he is taking his fledgling steps in the paid ranks, has vast experience in the amateur game having won the Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship and topped England Golf’s Order of Merit as the leading junior golfer.

Penge enjoyed a highly successful EuroPro Tour season in 2019, capturing his first professional win at the PREM Group Irish Masters.

Alfie Plant

Penge’s fellow former England international Alfie Plant also recorded his maiden victory in 2019, securing his first professional title at The Golfcatcher Championship.

The 28-year-old is no stranger to the Challenge Tour having teed it up ten times in 2020, making six cuts in the process and finishing in the top ten once, at the Italian Challenge Open Eneos Motor Oil. He went on to finish 44th on the Road to Mallorca Rankings after the Challenge Tour Grand Final.

The Englishman enjoyed a glittering amateur career before turning professional in 2017, capturing the Silver Medal as the leading amateur at The 2017 Open Championship.

After a strong EuroPro season, which also included two runner-up finishes, the 2017 European Amateur Champion is now ready to make the next step with a full Challenge Tour season and is sure to be one to watch as the 2021 season unfolds.

Andrew Wilson

The Englishman sampled life on the biggest stage after qualifying for The 146th Open Championship at Royal Portrush, carding consecutive rounds of 67 over the weekend to finish tied for 32nd place, and he continued that form into the 2019 EuroPro Tour season, earning a breakthrough win at the Motocaddy Masters.

Wilson already proved he has what it takes to contend on the Challenge Tour, finishing tied 23rd in his maiden start at the Bridgestone Challenge in 2018, and after earning his chance with a strong 2019 season on the EuroPro Tour, took his opportunity to mix it towards the top of the leaderboard multiple times on the Challenge Tour in 2020.

Like countryman Plant, Wilson took the chance to tee it up when he could in 2020, making eight cuts from 12 starts in 2020. The highlights of his 2020 campaign were back-to-back tied third place finishes at the Northern Ireland Open Supported by The R&A and the Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos, which was dual-ranked with the European Tour.

Bradley Moore

The last man to secure his full Challenge Tour card via the EuroPro Tour, Moore is also set for a full Challenge Tour season after making five starts in 2020.

Akin to his three compatriots, Moore entered the winner’s circle for the first time in 2019, securing his first professional title at The HotelPlanner.com Championship.

Moore followed in the footsteps of Rory McIlroy by winning the Irish Boys Amateur Open during an acclaimed amateur career in which he also lifted the English Boys Under 18 Open Amateur Stroke-Play Championship.

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

RBC Heritage: Final round suspended due to darkness, Monday finish underway at Harbour Town

Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, authored a signature moment in the waning twilight Sunday, recovering from a hooked 4-iron second shot on the par-4 15th with a sorcerous wedge to 11 feet that he converted for an unlikely par to maintain a five-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, J.T. Poston and Sahith Theegala.

Scheffler, chasing his fourth PGA TOUR win in five starts, stood 20 under for the tournament as the final round was suspended due to darkness at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, with nine players yet to complete the final round on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

This will be the second unscheduled Monday finish on the PGA TOUR this season and first since the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, won by Austin Eckroat. The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, won by Wyndham Clark, was shortened to 54 holes after play was unable to be contested on Sunday and Monday.

Sunday’s play at Harbour Town was initially suspended at 4:28 p.m. due to lightning in the area. The final pairing of Scheffler and Sepp Straka had completed 11 holes at the time. Players were removed from the course, with the delay ultimately lasting 2 hours and 32 minutes before play resumed at 7 p.m.

Updated: Sunday, April 21, 4:28 p.m. ET: The RBC Heritage’s final round has been suspended due to lightning in the area, with the final groups playing the back nine Sunday at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Play was suspended at 4:28 p.m. local time, with leader Scottie Scheffler playing the 12th hole. Players were taken off the course at the time of suspension.

Scheffler began the final round at 16 under, one stroke clear of Sepp Straka, and the world No. 1 turned in 3-under 33 with a chip-in eagle at the par-5 second, a two-putt birdie at the par-5 fifth and seven pars. Scheffler stood 19 under, four strokes clear of the field at the time of delay. Seven players stood 15 under.

“We were hoping to play through this; we felt like we had another 25 minutes left of this heavy rain and were then going to get a break on the back end,” said Mark Dusbabek, the PGA TOUR’s senior director lead TV Rules & Video Analyst, on the CBS broadcast. “We had lightning unfortunately pop up 4 miles away; just suddenly caught us in, so we had to stop play for this. We’re going to see how things go here and make a decision.

"The course was not unplayable. It wasn't because of the rain. It was just because the lightning popped up."

The final round of the RBC Heritage is poised to deliver fans a fantastic finish, but that might not come without a little bit of weather late in the day.

After the first three rounds of tournament golf at Harbour Town Golf Links were accompanied by sunshine and temperatures ranging from the upper 70s into the mid-80s, Sunday could bring golfers a different challenge to navigate as the tournament comes to a close.

According to the forecast, a cold front will be slowly moving southward into the Hilton Head Island area on Sunday, increasing the chances for showers and a few thunderstorms as play gets into the early to mid-afternoon hours and continuing into the evening hours. Storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Otherwise, Sunday morning will remain dry with temperatures warming into the mid to upper 70s before falling into the 60s late in the day. Light wind Sunday morning will increase out of the north 10-15 gusting to 20-25 mph late in the day.

The final pairing of the day, Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka, are set to tee off at 1:55 p.m. ET. Scheffler holds a one-stroke lead at 16-under.
