These Scenic Ferry Rides Are the Best Way to See Europe

F erries are often means for getting from point A to point B, added to your travel itinerary out of necessity, not enthusiasm. If you plan ahead, however, a ferry crossing can be one of the most memorable parts of your vacation and much more than a way of getting to your destination. Whether it’s an epic trip through a Norwegian fjord, or an Odyssey-esque voyage through the Greek islands, a ferry ride can be a picturesque and peaceful way to travel. Here are a few of Europe’s most incredibly scenic ferry rides.

1. Ancona, Italy to Split, Croatia

Aerial view of Split, Croatia

Photo: Dreamer4787 /Shutterstock

To get from the east coast of Italy to Croatia , you could drive for 10 hours through Slovenia, but you’d miss the unique experience of crossing the Adriatic Sea by ferry. Departing from Ancona all year-round, the Jadrolinija ferry brings passengers (and their vehicles) to the historic Croatian city of Split. Split itself is reason enough to take this trip, with its beautiful beaches, Diocletian’s Palace , and the nearby Krka National Park , but the ferry will also take you along the Croatian coastline. You’ll see secluded beaches and little villages like Stari Grad, on the island of Hvar, where the ferry stops. From Split, you can continue sailing in Croatia on smaller ferries that go south to Dubrovnik, north to Zadar, or even to small islands like Krk. The journey between Ancona and Split takes around nine hours, with prices varying by route and whether you’re traveling with a vehicle.

2. Island hopping in Greece

High view of Santorini and the Cyclades

Photo: Daniel X D /Shutterstock

You might get a small taste of island hopping on the Croatian coast, but when it comes to bouncing between sun-drenched Mediterranean islands, there’s nothing like Greece . If you find yourself vacationing either on the Greek mainland or one of its many islands, you don’t have to let the Aegean or Ionian seas limit you. Blue Star Ferries depart from Piraeus on the mainland to over a dozen Greek islands, including Santorini, Mykonos, Syros, Ios, Rhodes, Mytilene, Karpathos, Leros, and more. With around 6,000 Greek islands total and some of the most beautiful waters in the world, you won’t tire of standing on the deck to check out your surroundings. Crossing times can range between 20 minutes and 21 hours based on where you’re traveling, though private cabins are provided for longer journeys, as well as food service (though beware, it’s a bit expensive). Ticket prices vary depending on which island you’re traveling to, your time of travel, and whether you’re bringing a vehicle, but complete ticket information is available on the Blue Star Ferries website .

3. Gudvangen to Kaupanger, Norway

Aurlandsfjord, The West Norwegian Fjords, Norway

Photo: Krishna.Wu /Shutterstock

Few journeys in the world are more epic than cruising through a Norwegian fjord, and ferry ride between Gudvangen and Kaupanger might be the most breathtaking of them all. Leave from Gudvangen, an old viking village a five hours’ drive northwest of Oslo, and cruise along the Nærøyfjord, Aurlandsfjord, and Sognefjord. Fjord Norway paints a scenic picture of the trip, describing how passengers will have views of “small homesteads clinging to the sides of the steep mountains that plunge into the fjord. An air of nostalgia permeates this spectacular fjord landscape surrounded by mountains reaching up to 6,000 feet.”

First you will sail through the narrow Nærøyfjord, where up to 25 waterfalls are often visible, before entering Aurlandsfjord and sailing past the small village of Frønningen, which can only be accessed by boat. The ferry runs in spring, summer, and fall; traverses approximately 39 miles; and takes anywhere from two to four hours. Tickets start at $36, but may vary depending on your date of departure and whether you’re taking a vehicle.

4. Stockholm archipelago, Sweden

Stockholm, Sweden

Photo: Oleksiy Mark /Shutterstock

Ferry use in Stockholm is unique. They aren’t only used by tourists for sightseeing, but play an integral role in the lives of the locals. The massive archipelago that borders Stockholm is one of the largest in Europe, with nearly 30,000 small islands, islets, and rocks. These islands often serve as popular day-trip destinations for Swedes, whether for shopping or just a brief nature escape. Many in the capital even own summer homes on these islands, to which they retreat for weeks at a time when the days grow longer. You could easily spend weeks hopping between the diverse islands of Stocholm’s archipelago, without running out of new places to explore.

If you do decide to venture into the archipelago, check out Vaxholm , just an hour ferry from the city center. This little town has restaurants, shops, galleries, cafes, and even beaches, within an incredibly small radius. Also be sure to check out Stora Fjäderholmen, an island rife with hiking trails, both along the seafront and through a forest. It’s also home to several artists’ studios, making it a great place to buy local handcrafted items.

Several ferries depart from Stockholm’s city center throughout the day. Check the timetable for exact times and rates.

5. The islands of western Scotland

CalMac Ferries in Scotland

Caledonian MacBrayne operates some of the most epic ferry rides in the British Isles. Serving Scotland’s western islands, including the Inner, Outer, and Southern Hebrides, the Firth of Clyde, and the Isle of Skye, this ferry might be the most picturesque way to experience them. Like the rest of Scotland, these islands are defined by rugged, green scenery, but they are also Scotland’s most remote destinations, filled with ancient castles, ruins, and small fishing villages. Indeed, for many residents of these remote areas, the ferry is their lifeline.

The 9 Most Scenic Ferry Rides In Europe

H aving grown up near and on the water, I love anything to do with boats. That said, you will probably never find me on a large cruise ship because I like flexibility and hate crowds when traveling. After the pandemic more than ever. But there are alternatives that give you the thrill of being on the water, feeling the wind in your hair, standing at the bow, looking ahead at your new destination from the water, which I think is just so much more fun than landing at an airport.

Despite my dislike of cruises, I have a distinct love of ferries. Go figure. A short, purposeful, and more often than not, cheap ferry filled with locals thrills me. It does not matter where I go, if there is a funicular or a ferry, I’ll be on it. And if it can take the place of a flight, even better, because just like with train travel, travel on a ferry it is just as much about the journey as it is about the destination.

Here is a selection of ferry trips within Europe that take you from one country to the next, across various seas, along rivers, or simply from one end of a city to the other. All have been chosen for their ease of use, great scenery along the way, convenience, or their way of providing an inexpensive alternative to a touristy boat trip.

Step aboard, and bon voyage .

1. Countless Ferries In Istanbul

One of the reasons that Istanbul is such a beautiful destination is not only its extensive history, but also the fact that it stretches across the Golden Horn waterway, the Bosphorus strait, and along the Sea of Marmara, all of which are crisscrossed by countless ferries. Hopping on a selection of these ferries should be near the top of your to-do list when exploring Istanbul. Most leave from the inner-city hub of Eminonu by the Galata Bridge. From here, you can catch a ferry to the colorful suburb of Balat; across to Uskudar on the Asian side; or up the Bosphorus toward the Black Sea. All tickets are cheap and easily bought at ticketing machines, and these normal commuter ferries will allow you to see all the sights from the water, travel past the smaller islands like Maiden’s Tower, and enjoy the sunshine while you go — all without paying the extortionate prices for the organized tourist harbor cruises.

Pro Tip: Plan for a stop in Ortakoy to see the pretty mosque and enjoy the little market with its food stalls.

2. Stockholm To Helsinki

Sweden to finland.

Traveling from the Swedish capital of Stockholm to the Finish capital of Helsinki by overnight ferry is probably the closest you will come to a cruise in this selection. Competing lines Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line have decked out their ships with saunas, restaurants serving local delicacies, and various other comforts. The ferries leave in the afternoon and arrive the next morning around 10 a.m., so you have plenty of time to stay on deck to take in the Swedish archipelago, with its countless small islands dotted with tiny, wooden huts, and also enjoy the ship itself. You can get a good night’s sleep before heading back on deck for the arrival in Finland.

Pro Tip: It is best to have either an early dinner, straight after departure, or a late one, after sunset, because the second and third hours after departure from Stockholm are the most scenic.

3. Venice To Burano

When in Venice, do as the locals do and catch a vaporetto , or waterbus, to the colorful little island of Burano. Vaporetti 12 and 14 leave from either San Zaccaria (near St. Mark’s Basilica) or Fondamente Nove and head to Burano, stopping at the glass-making island of Murano (with a chance to find some sea glass ) and continuing onto Mazzorbo and Torcello. Sitting on this large waterbus, you can spend all day on the waters of the Venetian Lagoon, enjoying the views and the other islands as you go. Buy a day ticket (or a 3-day ticket, depending on how long you are staying for) to get unlimited access to public transport. This way, you can hop on and off, spending a few happy hours exploring the various islands.

Pro Tip: Please note that since January 2023, Venice has levied a tourist tax on both guests staying overnight and daytrippers.

4. Algeciras To Tangier

Spain to morocco.

The Strait of Gibraltar is the stretch of water that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and divides Europe from Africa. On a clear day, you can spot one continent while standing on the other, and there are plenty of ferries making a quick connection between the ports. While there are many other crossings, my favorite ferry route is between Algeciras and Tangier because you sail right past Gibraltar with great views of the rock, and Tangier is a superb setting-off point for exploring Morocco .

Pro Tip: There are several ferry companies doing this route, with around 30 sailings every day. You can choose from fast, 1.5-hour crossings to slower ones, taking 2.5 hours. All ferries are open to foot passengers as well as vehicles.

5. Barcelona To Mallorca

While you are in Spain, you might want to check out the Balearic Islands. One good way of connecting from the mainland is to take the ferry from Barcelona to Mallorca or maybe Ibiza, depending on your preference. The crossings take six to seven hours, allowing you a day on the Mediterranean Sea to enjoy the sun, sea, and sights.

Pro Tip: There are two ferry operators that offer different itineraries, so you could opt for a night crossing in a cabin if you have connections to consider on your return trip

6. Saint-Malo To Jersey Island

France to uk.

Setting off from beautiful Saint-Malo and taking the 1.5-hour-long, twice-daily sailing to the Bailiwick of Jersey is a lovely experience, especially once you get closer to the island. Condor Ferries operates a no-nonsense, easy-to-use ferry that’s open to both foot passengers and vehicles, with restaurants and shopping onboard.

Pro Tip: Despite the short distance, it is worth paying a few dollars for an upgrade to the Horizon Lounge , as you will get seats with great views from the inside.

7. Athens To Santorini

Sailing through the Greek Islands by cruise ship is a popular route, and not surprisingly so. The beauty of the islands set against the Mediterranean Sea is unbeatable. But traveling by ferry between the islands allows you far more flexibility at a more affordable price. Head off from the Athens port of Piraeus and head for that oh-so-picturesque island of Santorini . Yes, Santorini is touristy, but you simply cannot beat those white and blue buildings nestled in the mountains. And on the way, you will spot many other islands and can enjoy being on the turquoise sea — while contemplating which island to hop to next. Ferryhopper has more on ferrying from Athens to Santorini here .

Pro Tip: There are many operators and ships, including slower car ferries and faster catamarans and hydrofoils. Choose carefully, as some of the faster ferries do not have open decks, and you will spend your time indoors, missing the views.

8. Split To Dubrovnik

Croatia has arguably the best coastline in Europe. It’s full of beaches, bays, islands, and medieval seaside towns, and the best way to enjoy the sights is by boat. There are plenty of organized tours and cruises, but the local ferries do the same job with more flexibility at a lower cost. Consider the trip from the seaside resort town of Split to the fortified city of Dubrovnik for maximum impact. You will not be able to pry yourself away from the views, I promise. Regular ferries operate up and down the coast, and this is just one option of many.

Pro Tip: Dubrovnik gets terribly crowded, so you might want to time your sailing to arrive in the afternoon, when the crowds start to thin out.

9. Central London To Greenwich

This isn’t a cruise ship but a waterbus, albeit one with the best seats in the house. Taking the waterbus from central London toward Greenwich is a veritable sightseeing tour that offers views of Westminster, St Paul’s, the Globe Theatre, the many bridges, Tate Modern, the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, and many more, all at the price of a bus ticket. Here is the map of the river (and all the things you’ll see along the way).

Pro Tip: If you are spending a few days in London, invest in an Oyster card for all public transport options.

Ferry prices in Europe

At Vivanoda, we wanted to launch a major study of ferry prices in Europe to better understand the variations in ferry fares according to several criteria (destination country, distance, seasonality, etc.). We therefore analyzed tens of thousands of ferry fares on hundreds of routes in Europe, as well as crossings to Turkey and the Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia), in order to gain as exhaustive a picture as possible. It should be noted that only the price was taken into account in this study, independently of the quality of service on board, differences in staff salaries, economic differences between countries, etc.

  • Ferry crossings to Tunisia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Sweden have the lowest price index.
  • Conversely, ferry crossings to Turkey, the UK and Morocco have the highest price indexes.
  • Connections between Greece and Turkey and between Morocco and Spain are proportionally the most expensive in Europe.
  • Connections between Germany and Lithuania or Latvia are the least expensive in relation to the distance covered.
  • The shorter the crossing, the higher the price.
  • Across Europe, prices are higher on average from July to September. They are also slightly higher when travel takes place at weekends.

Major ferry destinations

With our ferry ticket search engine, you can find prices for hundreds of ferry crossings in Europe and around the world.

Here's a list of the top destinations from the nearly 3,000 ferry routes available on our site.

Why travel by ferry?

With nearly 400 million ferry trips per year and the ubiquitous seas (Mediterranean, Adriatic, Aegean, English Channel...), oceans and lakes that make up its geography, Europe is an ideal place to travel by boat.

Although it is a rather slow means of transportation, and although more and more companies are introducing ultra-fast ferries on the busiest routes, which can cut travel time in half or in thirds, the ferry has many advantages to offer:

  • It is a relaxing (no driving) and comfortable mode of transportation (freedom to move around, walk the decks of the ship or rest in a cabin).
  • Your vacation begins as soon as you step aboard.
  • You take the time to travel
  • You enjoy the sea air and a privileged view of the sea.
  • You won't be bored thanks to the many facilities offered by the companies (restaurants, bars, duty-free stores, entertainment, cinemas....).
  • You are accompanied by attentive staff throughout the crossing
  • You can easily travel by bicycle.
  • You are not limited by the number of luggage.
  • You travel with your family in the best conditions: your children will be delighted to discover the ship and the services it offers.

What is a ferry crossing like?

Once you have found and booked your ferry ticket through Vivanoda, you will quickly receive a confirmation e-mail containing the most important information (price, number of passengers, vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians, equipment on board: cabin or reclining seat, etc). It will also indicate the time at which the shipping company requires you to report to the port of embarkation. It is imperative that you respect this time or you will be refused access to the ship.

If you are traveling by car, boarding is very quick and you go directly to the check-in counters decorated with your company's colors. If you are traveling by foot, you check in at the ferry terminal and then board. Be sure to bring your valid identity documents, passport or national identity card, depending on the destination and the border you are crossing.

Once on board, everyone is in control of their own time: restaurants for gourmets, entertainment and shows for children, movies and video games for teenagers, reading and rest for parents.... Services on board the ferries strive to meet the needs of all age groups and individuals.

To avoid seasickness, most recent ships are equipped with stabilizers that reduce the sensation of the boat moving on the waves. But for the most sensitive and depending on the weather conditions, it is advisable to regularly take a breath of fresh air on the deck of the boat, to sit near a window to see the horizon in order to give the brain better coordinated information. You can also take a seasickness medication that usually makes you sleepy.

When the crossing is over, you will enjoy the coastline of your final destination which is gradually taking shape until you arrive in port.

Ecological impact of ferry crossings?

Like any means of transportation and like any trip, ferry crossings produce greenhouse gases and therefore have an ecological impact on the planet. Ships consume a lot of fuel and emit fumes containing heavy metals. But like any industry, shipping has played a role in the fight against global warming.

The Convention on Marine Pollution (MARPOL), initiated by the International Maritime Organization and adopted by the European Commission in Europe, requires ferries and other transport vessels to meet maximum emission standards. Shipping companies are the first to introduce cleaner, more environmentally friendly ships.

This is the case of Brittany Ferries which, thanks to European Union subsidies, has equipped all its ships with "scrubbers" to wash and purify the smoke they produce. Ships running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) will also become the norm in the near future.

Turkey: Istanbul – Uskudar

ferry travel europe

To be honest, any ferry from Istanbul is going to be amazing due to its position on the Golden Horn waterway, the Bosphorus strait, and the Sea of Marmara. Plus all the iconic city sights there are dotted around the city. The capital city’s harbour offers many routes in all directions but we’ve chosen the Uskudar route because you travel to the Asian side of the city.

Short but very sweet, you’ll leave from Eminonu by the Galata Bridge for a 30-minute ferry ride. Look back for views of the iconic blue mosque as you leave and as you glide along you’ll see Maiden’s Tower lighthouse 200m from the Asian side and also waterfront attractions like the splendid Beylerbeyi Palace and the 1500s Şemsi Paşa mosque.

POPULAR ROUTES

The type of identification document you need to travel by ferry depends on your route and nationality. On most international routes you will need your passport to check in, but there are exceptions. If you are an EU citizen traveling to the EU, you could use a valid national identity of an EU Member State . Also on many domestic routes, a valid identification document with a photograph is sufficient. However, it is necessary that you always carry your ID card or passport with you, as the officers of the ferry carry out checks, on boarding and during travel. In addition, passengers are obliged, besides their tickets and official documents, to have the supporting documents for the commercial rebates they have received, if they have issued discount tickets. Τravelling instructions 30/04/2022 We would like to inform you that according to Government Gazette 2137/Β/30-04-2022, for the movement of passengers, it is no longer required to present and demonstrate documents proving the vaccination against coronavirus COVID-19, the recovery from the disease or a negative laboratory test result after coronavirus COVID- 19 testing. The use of a protective mask is mandatory in all indoor public passenger areas. If a passenger does not wear a mask, he will not be allowed to board the vessel. The following individuals are excluded from the obligation to use a mask: persons for whom the use of a mask is not indicated for proven medical reasons, such as due to respiratory problems; and children under the age of four (4).

I took a 20-minute ferry ride from Europe to Asia for $1. I was shocked I didn't see more tourists on board.

  • I wanted to set foot on the European and Asian side of Istanbul during a recent visit with my kids.
  • A $1 commuter ferry was the cheapest option for us to go from the European side to the Asian side.
  • The ride was only 20 minutes each way, and I was surprised not to see more tourists on the ferry.

Insider Today

Istanbul is one of my favorite cities in the world — and it's a popular one, too. Last year, it was the most visited city in the world , and Istanbul is expected to welcome even more visitors in 2024.

It's a beautiful blend of the old and the new and one of the very few to span two continents. The Bosphorus Strait cuts through Istanbul, separating the city's European side from its Asian side.

Many first-time visitors to Istanbul stay on the European side since that's where most of the city's major sites are located, but I wanted to stop by Asia on a recent trip with my kids.

Fortunately, I discovered that getting Istanbul's Asian side doesn't have to be expensive nor does it have to take long.

I wanted to avoid touristy cruises, so I looked into commuter ferries

Cruises on the Bosphorous seemed like the most popular option available, but I've taken similar rides and found them to be too long with too much pressure to buy overpriced food and drinks.

I also didn't really care about having an onboard tour guide , which many of these cruises have, since I already knew a lot about the location. And I didn't want to spend almost two hours stuck on a tourist boat for about $30 a ticket.

Plus, although they technically go through Asia, none of the cruises I found let passengers disembark in Asia.

After speaking to a local, our best option seemed to be a 20-minute commuter ferry that some residents of Istanbul take between Europe and Asia every day on their way to work.

The ferry was surprisingly fast, comfortable and affordable

It was easy to find a centrally located ferry station, and we found one in Eminonu not far from Istanbul's famous Galata Tower and Blue Mosque.

The ticket agent tried to steer me toward a more touristy cruise, but I declined. I'm glad I did — I was stunned to discover that our one-way ferry tickets would only cost about $1 a person.

We hoped for the best as we boarded and I was relieved to find that the ferry was spacious and comfortable.

Related stories

My family settled into seats on a long bench near a big, bright window and watched the European side of Istanbul recede.

About 10 minutes into the ride, I grabbed a candy bar and bottle of water for my son from the ferry's basic but well-stocked snack bar.

We were also able to sit at a bench with a table while he ate.

About 20 minutes after setting sail from Europe, we arrived in Asia at Kadiköy.

We'd planned to wander around the Asian side of Istanbul and get dinner, but it was getting late, and a rainstorm was predicted to hit soon.

Instead, I bought us return tickets back to the European side. After a short wait, we were on our way.

The views were one of the highlights of the ride — especially at night

On the return trip, we decided to explore the ferry.

Instead of sitting inside, we made our way to the second level of the ferry and took seats on the rooftop deck. The nighttime views on the return trip were stunning and an unexpected highlight of my visit to Istanbul.

It was magical seeing the outline of the city's gorgeous mosques lit against the night sky as we approached Istanbul's European side.

These are the same views we'd have likely paid 30 times more for on a touristy cruise advertising views of Istabul's skyline at night.

I can see why moonlight cruises charge a premium, but we got to look at the same stunning skyline for just $1 a person.

Overall, I was surprised not to see more tourists on board

Given how fast, cheap, and easy it was to take the ferry from the European side of Istanbul to the Asian side, I was surprised that there didn't appear to be any other tourists on board.

I think it's the best way to make the transcontinental trip, and I would definitely do it again.

A deserted sandy cove with one small boat in the clear turquoise sea.

Europe’s best beach holidays: Donoussa, Greece

This quiet island in the Small Cyclades has one small town, several wild sandy bays and a plethora of panoramic walking and running trails

E lias, quiet and unassuming, meets us at the tiny harbour and says he could drive us to the house but it would be quicker on foot. He directs us up a narrow alley past a bustling kafeneio , where people are debating the news of the day over coffee.

One of a little cluster of houses, ours has a pergola of rough-hewn logs and bamboo, and looks out to sea across a garden of rosemary and agave, a vegetable patch and composter, and the pen that is home to a donkey called Yolanda. Inside there is restored wooden furniture and textiles woven on a loom by Elias’s partner, Ploumitsa, who waves as she returns from feeding the chickens. The young couple’s passion for preserving the unspoilt landscape of their island makes Argalios guesthouse an inspiring place.

One of the Small Cyclades, just five square miles in area, diminutive Donoussa feels reassuringly low-key and relaxed. Most of the 150 permanent residents – and visitors like us – are in Stavros, where houses sit among palms and prickly pear and nothing is more than five minutes’ walk from the village beach. There is a bakery, a music bar, and half a dozen places to eat, with traditional dishes such as fava (split pea dip) and goat with potatoes. The shop in the back of the bar is open every day, and the other minimarket sells gloriously misshapen lumps of goat’s cheese, xinotyro , from neighbouring Naxos.

White houses with coloured shutters, a domed church and bit of sandy beach.

Elias, bringing fresh bread from his grandmother’s wood-fired oven, recommends Kedros beach, south-east across a headland, where his family has a cafe-bar serving organic local produce. After a 20-minute walk we find a gorgeous sweep of pale sand fringing sapphire sea amid gentle hills dotted with low shrub. I swim into the bay and look down through clear water to rippled patterns and wispy sea grass.

Apart from the guesthouse and taverna, Elias’s main occupation is maintaining and promoting the trails for walking and running. Over the following days on these paths we explore the rugged south coast with its old windmills and farmhouses and an ancient settlement.

Bathed in late afternoon light, bright white rock glows and blue sea shimmers. Goatherds call to their goats. From the spring at Mersini, a path of pale ochre stone leads down a valley to Livadi beach, another breathtaking sweep of soft sand, natural and unadulterated, and pale turquoise sea.

Most spectacular is the route to the north of the island, skirting the almost 400-metre peak of Papas. After a hike to the ridge, we look down at Kalotaritissa, a handful of cottages on a deep blue bay encircled by hills. At the end of the zigzagging trail, chickens and goats wander as the priest finishes his weekly call to the oldest resident.

A footpath continues around the edge of the bay to a perfect place for a swim, then we settle on the taverna terrace for a platter of grilled biftekia with a tomato salad, rough-cut slabs of feta drizzled with olive oil and oregano, and dense tzatziki streaked with garlic.

The owners offer a shot of something strong for the walk back. “Come back any time!” As we return to Stavros, the setting sun lights the hillsides like switching on an electric element, and stars pierce the fading blue sky.

Washington ferry fares increase May 1 for peak season

The state ferry system’s annual peak-season surcharge goes into effect Wednesday.

The surcharge will increase fares for vehicles on all routes by 25%, except for vehicles traveling from Anacortes to Lopez, Shaw and Orcas islands, as well as Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. Those fares will increase by 35%.

For example, a one-way trip on the Seattle/Bainbridge Island route will see an increase of about $4 to $22.25 for a standard-sized car and driver, according to Washington State Ferries.

The surcharge applies to single vehicles crossing Puget Sound but does not apply to passenger or multi-ride fares. Senior passengers ride for half price, and youth ages 18 and under ride free on all routes.

The peak-season pricing will continue through September, covering the busiest months of the year for ferry travel.

Vehicle fares are available online at  wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/fares .

Fares vary by route, depending on location, sailing time and other factors.

For Port Townsend/Coupeville and Anacortes/San Juan Islands routes, travelers can reserve their spot on the ferry for the summer season through Washington State Ferries’ website.
