21 Best Finger Lakes Wineries to Visit in 2024

View of the grapevines looking out over the Finger Lakes

Best Wineries, Wine Tasting Experiences and Vineyards in the Finger Lakes to Visit During 2024

The Finger Lakes region is located in the center of New York State, about 4 to 5 hours from Manhattan, 1 to 2 hours from Rochester, and 2 to 3 hours from Buffalo. The lakes themselves are long, narrow bodies of water that run north to south. The largest of the lakes are Seneca, Cayuga, and Keuka but there are several smaller lakes in the area as well.

The Finger Lakes have historically been a vacation area for New Yorkers because the lakes moderate the local climates, providing a cooling effect in the summer and some warmth in the winters. For that reason, vinifera grapes thrive here, albeit cool climate ones! Long a producer of Riesling, the Finger Lakes wine region has become known for Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, and many other grapes, like Blaufränkisch, that grow well in chillier temperatures.

Finger Lakes Wine Tours

Let the experts do the planning – and the driving! Here are some of our favorite tours.

The Seneca Lake South Wine Tastings Tour is the perfect way to explore the largest Finger Lake without worrying about driving. It’s fully customizable, too, which means you get to choose which wineries you’d like to visit. You can also stop for lunch at either your preferred place, or on the recommendation of your driver.

Another great option is the Keuka Lake Winery Tour . Not as large as Seneca, Keuka still manages to have many fabulous wineries clustered around it. A designated driver will bring you and your friends to taste while filling in details about the region and winemaking process. A lunch stop can be added as well.

Best Finger Lakes Restaurants

F.l.x. table.

22 Linden Street, Geneva

(315) 730-3083

This vision by chef and Master Sommelier Christopher Bates is based on community and creativity. The seasonally based prix-fixe menu is always impressive, as are the range of possible wine pairings.

4432 West Lake Road, Geneva

(315) 789-2020

Port Café is the best of all possible worlds: the food is stellar while the setting is low-key and unpretentious. Overlooking Seneca Lake, the menu has vegetarian and gluten-free options, alongside local and international wines by the glass.

Pleasant Valley Inn

7979 NY-54, Bath

(607) 569-2282

Set in a beautiful mansion from 1848, the Pleasant Valley Inn offers an impeccable dining experience. The menu is classically French(ish) with options like cedar plank salmon and filet mignon, but there are vegan options as well. Or, get a classic cocktail and some fresh oysters for a relaxed nibble or two.

The Park Inn

37 Shethar Street, Hammondsport

(607) 224-4004

Focusing on a seasonal menu, The Park Inn offers fantastic dishes like an orchard harvest salad with New York State cheddar and house made gnocchi with local kale. The décor is informed by local history, including the link to early aviation and flight.

F.L.X. Wienery

5090 NY-14, Dundee

(607) 243-7100

If the name seems to ring a bell, it’s because it is indeed connected to F.L.X. Table. Also by Master Somm Bates, commitment to excellence is clear but that’s about where the similarities end. The Wienery is all about being “high end low brow” food. It’s chill, it’s fun, and it’s THE place to get your hot dog or burger on. Pick one of the inventive dishes – like the K-Town burger – to have your mind blown.

Stonecat Café

5315 NY-414, Hector

(607) 546-5000

Stonecat Café has long been a favorite and we’re glad it’s been able to stick around post-pandemic! Seasonal, local ingredients inform the menu, alongside local wine, beer, and cider. Stonecat is also very considerate of all possible allergies so it’s a great option for those with varying needs. Be sure to check out live music, too, for a fantastic evening.

Kindred Fare

512 Hamilton Street, Geneva

(315) 787-0400

Designed to be warm and engaging, Kindred Fare nails it in every aspect. Check out the wonderful plates to share – like spaghetti squash gratin or poutine – or off-road it with your own heap of fried chicken. Don’t worry, vegans – there’s an entire menu just for you that goes way beyond portobello burgers. Be sure to try one of their fantastic cocktails while you’re there – and yes, there are non-alcoholic options too.

Graft Wine + Cider Bar

204 North Franklin Street, Watkins Glen

(607) 210-4324

We’re not quite sure how Graft somehow manages to be homey and hip but who are we to question a winning combination? Locally sourced ingredients are transformed into dishes that are almost too perfect to eat – almost, because you’ll be happy you did!

Finger Lakes on Tap

35 Fennell Street, Skaneateles

(315) 685-9600

If you’ve had enough wine – or just need a break – the Finger Lakes is also dotted with breweries and distilleries. Thankfully, you can taste through the wide range of brews at Finger Lakes on Tap, which has an extensive beer list. The food is classic pub kicked up a notch, with Bavarian pretzels, fondue, and all sorts of burgers.

The Elf in the Oak

4221 NY-414, Burdett

(607) 546-4641

Because sometimes, you just need an honest to goodness sandwich joint, are we right? Their breakfast sandwiches are the perfect way to fuel up before a day of wine tasting, though you’ll probably want to circle back later in the day for schnitzel on brioche or a fried tofu sub.  Check their Facebook page for the latest updates.

We’ve already recommended the Inn for dinner, so why drive any distance after? Rooms at the Pleasant Valley Inn are top-notch, with wonderful details like chocolate chip cookies and rocking chairs scattered around the property. Breakfasts are a standout as well.

Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel

16 North Franklin Street, Watkins Glen

More of a traditional hotel, Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel has beautiful views of Seneca Lake and among the most helpful staff around. From turn-down service to winery recommendations, the staff happily accommodates guest needs. The on-site restaurant, Blue Pointe Grill, is a bonus.

It’s a Wonderful Life Museum

76 Fall Street, Seneca Falls

(315) 568-5838

If you’ve ever watched the holiday classic “It’s a Wonderful Life,” you’ve probably noticed how many references there are to upstate New York – from George and Mary singing “Buffalo Girls” to Sam Wainwright talking about plastics in Rochester. That’s because the hometown of Bedford Falls is based on Seneca Falls in the Finger Lakes. Explore the tribute to cinematic history, and maybe even feel inspiration to search for Zuzu’s petals.

Watkins Glen State Park

1009 North Franklin Street, Watkins Glen

(607) 535-4511

One of the most beautiful parks in the region – which is filled with beautiful parks – Watkins Glen has no less than 19 waterfalls to discover. Pets are allowed on-leash, and campsites are available to reserve. It’s worth spending several days here.

Getting to the Finger Lakes

Since the Finger Lakes region is comprised of many different lakes (eleven, in fact), visitors need a car. You can check current rental rates here on Kayak . The region is accessible from bigger cities like Buffalo, Rochester, and New York, but moving between wineries and activities do require driving. For that reason, it’s best to plan ahead and either hire a driver or take it slow when visiting wineries.

Access to most of the Finger Lakes run south from the New York State Thruway, so visitors should choose which towns to visit and plan from there.

I highlight recommend Finger Lakes Winery Tours - everything from the beginning of the process booking with Velevia to the end of the trip couldn't have been better. I received confirmations during the process and guidance as to the best timing of our visits to wineries / breweries. Our driver Paul was awesome - we changed times and locations during our trip and he made everything work. We couldn't have been more pleased with the service that was provided - they made a perfect weekend even more perfect for celebrating my daughter and son in laws recent wedding. We will definitely use them again.

Terrible from start to finish. Took a bus trip to NYC. Late going and even later getting home... NO ac, No working chargers on the entire right side of the bus, NO light in the bathroom, Bathroom door did not shut all the way, no working tvs as promised... Would never ever recommend !!!!!

Photo of Rita F.

NYC Bus tour. Driver was late arrival int he morning then late departure in the evening out of the city! it took over an hour to get out of Manhattan which was not his fault as it was a busy holiday weekend but I was confused with the rout to get out and then the driver took an alternate route to get us home at 1am that was all back roads of PA in FOG!!! The driving seemed erratic as the bus was speeding up then stopping quickly. We couldn't sleep with all the motion and the HEAT was on despite the driver kept saying it was not and the AIR was on. I would hate to be on that bus in the summer! Broken bathroom, no air, no reading lights working, weird smells, no DVD player, no ports working and the wi-fi was awful! Never again!

We booked a limo and a shuttle for a Wedding in Geneva, NY The Limo driver had no idea where he was supposed to be and at what time. The shuttle driver was very nice, but she was not given my correct phone #, so she couldn't get a hold of me for the first 2 hours of the evening. At the end of the evening she was told to NOT make the last shuttle trip because it was 11:36---6 minutes past our slotted time. Fitzgerald Bros told her to not bring home the Bride and Groom and 22 other guests unless they were paid another $120. Earlier in the week, I was told we would be given a 30 minute grace period. The Sales Mgr was RUDE and inflexible, and would not refund the $120 I paid in cash---AFTER I pleaded with the driver to bring them back to the hotel. Will NEVER use this company again

Photo of Brooke B.

Terrible experience!! My group of 10 had rented a shuttle van for a wine tour. Our driver was very unsafe and unpleasant. I think the most disappointing thing is trying to get in touch with the company after the incident, they were not responsive at all. Horrible customer service. I would not recommend.

Photo of Winston K.

We arranged for an SUV limo for a bachelorette wine tour. 30 minutes prior to arrival, we got a call indicating that we must pay the balance with cash or check, and that tips would only be accepted in cash. Luckily someone in our party had a spare check. Upon arrival, the driver asked for his tip before we even left. The limo we entered was filthy, old, and quite literally broken (we stalled twice). The AC was broken, there was trash left from the previous party, and the music didn't work. Our driver smoked between our winery stops, leaving a stench in the vehicle, which was especially uncomfortable for one of our passengers who was pregnant... Limos should add to the fun, but we could not wait to get out of this vehicle at every stop. I have attempted to contact the company twice, but they have failed to respond to my questions and concerns regarding safety and cleanliness. Do not book with this company.

Photo of Jenni M.

We had an incredible winery tour experience! Ten of us enjoyed the wineries recommended by the company for our group and cannot say enough great things about our driver, Ethan. Thanks so much for a wonderful day!! We appreciated their advice to reserve our tastings in advance.

Photo of Axel H.

My family and friends wanted to go on a winery tour in the finger lakes area after doing the corning half marathon. We hadn't done anything like this before so were a little nervous, but the reservation person at the office planned out an itinerary for us and booked an appointment for us at each winery. We were surprised by how simple they made the process for us. On the day of, we had a stretch SUV limo come for our group of 5. At first it felt a little silly to have such a big vehicle, but after the first winery stop it was really nice to be able to stretch our legs out, recline, and having the bottled water available in the car was a helpful touch. The tour they planned out was well-thought out. The first stop was Pleasant Valley which was a historical wine production facility. they had a wide spectrum of different wines to sample (champagne, white and red varietals, port, sherry, sparkling rose) and an exhibit on the history of wine growing in the area. The second was Bully Hill, which had a cafe although we did not stop. The side-facing seats in the limo gave us a beautiful view over lake keuka as we went up the hill! The wineries got more sophisticated as we went on, the third stop was Dr Konstantin Frank and the last one was Heron Hill which is an ecological focused winery. It was a good progression of wineries in the order they picked out for us. Throughout the trip our driver William was safe and attentive. I was a limo skeptic at first, but it was really nice to have the couch-style seating to sit around living-room style was great. I recommend going on a limo winery tour for anyone who hasn't done it before!

Booked with this company as they were recommended by Fingerlakes Premier Properties. We book our tour for five people which included a toddler in a car seat, so we were on a set schedule. They were aware of this 11am-5pm schedule. We had multiple email conversations back and forth regarding our stops and what not. We paid the full balance in advance to make it easier and we were charged a 3.5% up charge for paying in advance. We found this ridiculous but whatever. The morning of we were all ready and no show. At 11:19am I called the company and it kept going to a message where I couldn't leave a message. I kept calling back and finally on the fourth call a man picked up. I felt like I woke him up. I told him that our driver was late. He got a little smart with me until he realized it was 11:19am not 10:19am. I found this hilarious and it definitely meant I woke him up. He tells me that he will contact the driver and call me right back. At 11:30am he still didn't call me back while I had an annoyed toddler who was wondering why he was strapped in a stroller without moving for more than 30 minutes!! My husband called the company at 11:30am. The guy proceeded to tell my husband that our driver was "delayed" and that they were in the process of finding us a new driver. Knowing we were on a set schedule with a toddler this obviously wouldn't work for us. So my husband said WE were cancelling and that we wanted a full refund. He said "not a problem". We were bummed cause we had been looking forward to and planning a wine tour for months. I wound up driving and being the designated driver. We had a great time but I really wanted to taste the finger lake wines since we live five driving hours away. The next day the refund was in process. We really hoped that the company would've reached out to us by phone to apologize or explain what happened. I definitely wouldn't have rated them one star if they had. Terrible customer service and company!!

We had a great time with our driver Eddy! He was our personal photographer throughout the day and just overall a nice and friendly guy. He arrived on-time (15 minutes early, actually!) and helped us stay on track during our full day of tours around Keuka. Karen and Carol (I think I'm getting their names right) we're also very helpful and responsive upon booking and leading up to our trip. I was a little skeptical at first seeing some of the negative reviews but I would highly recommend! Thank you to Fitz bro's and to Eddy for helping make our girls getaway awesome!

18 top finger lakes wineries to visit.

In New York's winemaking region, riesling reigns supreme.

18 Finger Lakes Wineries

Enjoy tasty drinks and stunning views in the Finger Lakes region.

If you enjoy wine – especially white wine – a visit to the Finger Lakes is in order. The region, which spans 11 lakes in New York, makes the perfect escape from New York City and other locales in the Mid-Atlantic and New England for a weekend or even a week – though the Finger Lakes are also worthy of a cross-country flight.

The world-renowned wineries make the Finger Lakes an especially popular destination for romantic getaways and girls trips like bachelorette celebrations . However, if you plan to visit the Finger Lakes for its family-friendly offerings, such as The Strong National Museum of Play , you'll be happy to know many of the wineries are kid- and dog-friendly.

The best wine in the Finger Lakes

New York state is America's third-largest wine producer thanks to the quality vintages of the Finger Lakes, where ice age glaciers left an ideal terroir and microclimate for growing riesling and cool weather-tolerant grapes. Riesling is the signature wine of the Finger Lakes, closely followed by gewurztraminer. Many wineries also produce delicious chardonnay and pinot gris; you'll likely find ice wine, a sweet wine made from frozen grapes still on the vine. If you like red wine, try the varietals such as pinot noir and cabernet franc for which the region is also known.

The best Finger Lakes for wineries

Look for wineries on Canandaigua, Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga lakes. Considered the heart of Finger Lakes wine country, these lakes each have a designated wine trail – though new growth and wine tasting rooms are popping up elsewhere in the region too. Note that wineries pay to be members of their respective trail(s) and appear on public maps and guides; plenty of excellent wineries are not members of these official trails and shouldn't be overlooked.

The best Finger Lakes wineries

The best Finger Lakes wineries are located both on and off the official wine trails in Finger Lakes wine country.

Boundary Breaks: Lodi

finger lakes winery tour reviews

Courtesy of Boundary Breaks

Boundary Breaks' dry riesling No. 239 has been named one of the world's top wines by Wine Spectator Magazine twice, most recently in 2021; No. 239 has also been recognized by Wine Enthusiast and the Wall Street Journal. The winemakers attribute the success of this wine and others to a late harvest, which allows more time for the fruit to ripen, resulting in a tropical quality and taste.

You can sip some of the award-winning wine in a seated tasting (available on a first-come, first-served basis) that includes five samples. Be sure to try a gewurztraminer and cabernet franc, other specialties by the winery. Visitors can also order wine by the glass or bottle, best enjoyed in the winery's Adirondack chairs that overlook Seneca Lake. Many recent visitors tout Boundary Breaks as their favorite winery in the Finger Lakes – and bonus: It's dog-friendly.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery: Hammondsport

Finger lakes wineries

Courtesy of Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

In 1958, a Ukrainian viticulturist named Dr. Konstantin Frank planted the first European grape varieties in the eastern U.S., establishing what would become known as the "vinifera revolution" amid the cool climate of New York. His expertise launched the Finger Lakes region's reputation for riesling and other vinifera varieties. Decades later, the late winemaker's namesake winery remains family-run and more popular than ever.

Located on Keuka Lake – with an additional vineyard on Seneca Lake – Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery draws crowds to an array of tasting experiences, including a seated sampling of five wines for which reservations are recommended. In the summer, walk-in guests are welcome to order wine by the glass, flight or bottle in Eugenia's Garden. Also from May to October (but by reservation only), visitors can enjoy the 1886 Food & Wine Experience, which features an in-depth look at the vineyards or winemaking process and pairs wines with small plates.

The winery has earned innumerable awards and accolades for its wines. Of special note is its growing focus on saperavi, an ancient red grape with a pigmented pulp – and one of the first varietals Dr. Frank planted when he began his winemaking journey. The winery's saperavi is light and elegant, with notes of fresh berries, licorice, violets, tobacco, grilled spices and chocolate.

O-Neh-Da and Eagle Crest Vineyards: Conesus

Finger lakes wineries

Head to Hemlock Lake in Conesus to discover two distinct vineyards in one place: O-Neh-Da and Eagle Crest.

Established in 1872 by Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid, O-Neh-Da Vineyard derives its name from what the Seneca people called Hemlock Lake, the only Finger Lake that didn't keep its original Indigenous name. Today O-Neh-Da considers itself the oldest authentic producer of premium sacramental wine; it also produces traditional Finger Lakes wines such as a cabernet franc, rieslings and a unoaked chardonnay. Eagle Crest Vineyards, on the other hand, makes proprietary blend table wines with playful names such as Yummy or Queen of the Vine, a top seller.

Travelers appreciate the historic setting and knowledgeable staff of the winery, which runs on solar power. O-Neh-Da and Eagle Crest's two tasting options each include five wines, with a choice of 1-ounce or 2-ounce pours. When selecting wines to sample, be sure to try the cabernet franc. What's more is the property's FLX Glamping sites, with kayaks, bicycles, pontoon boat rides and guided hikes available to overnight guests.

Address: 7107 Vineyard Road, Conesus, NY 14435

Element Winery at F.L.X. Provisions: Geneva

Oenophiles will want to sample a sophisticated riesling by master sommelier Christopher Bates, whose global training and technical skills have made him an illustrious winemaker. To maintain all-natural flavors and aromas, Bates' wines are made exclusively with hand-picked grapes and without the use of additives or oak barrels.

Element Winery's tasting room can be found at the Geneva location of F.L.X. Provisions, where you can try Bates' world-class wines plus dozens of other Finger Lakes vintages. Previous visitors say the experience and staff are outstanding, with some commenting that it's a great place get a taste of various Finger Lakes wines if you're short on time.

After stopping for a wine tasting in Geneva, take a ride 25 miles south to Dundee to enjoy another passion project co-founded by Bates: FLX Wienery, a casual restaurant that pairs artisanal brats and fast-casual food with beer and wine.

Address: 16 Linden St., Geneva, NY 14456

Fox Run Vineyards: Penn Yan

If you're visiting the Finger Lakes with kids and/or dogs in tow, check out Fox Run Vineyards. In addition to its popular semi-dry riesling, unoaked chardonnay, dry rose and lemberger, the winery offers educational vineyard tours, a seasonal cafe, a wine barn (where you can enjoy wine by self-guided flight, glass or bottle on Saturdays in the summer), live entertainment, festivals and other events, all of which are family-friendly. Leashed dogs are welcome at Fox Run's tasting bar, back patio and yard.

As part of its mission to reduce environmental impact, Fox Run Vineyards' practice of "dry farming" means the crops are not watered by artificial means. Fox Run also fully operates on solar power and maintains a 4-acre monarch butterfly and bee sanctuary nearby to support the local pollinator population, among a variety of other sustainability efforts.

For traditional tastings, choose your flight – dry, sweet or riesling – for a sampling of five wines, or opt for the Taste Buds Flight, which pairs five preselected wines with five artisanal bites. Fox Run does not take reservations for tastings. Elevate your experience further with a VIP Tour, in which you'll be able to explore the estate with co-owner Scott Osborn, followed by a private wine tasting paired with charcuterie and cheese in the barrel room, a restored 1800s dairy barn. This experience must be reserved at least two weeks in advance. Recent visitors say they thoroughly enjoyed the winery and its offerings, especially the food from the cafe.

Address: 670 state Route 14, Penn Yan, NY 14527

Glenora Wine Cellars: Dundee

Finger lakes wineries

Courtesy of Glenora Wine Cellars

Glenora Wine Cellars is the perfect place to escape for a romantic weekend in upstate New York (with or without Fido). This winery's high-quality offerings include sparkling wines, rieslings, red and white vinifera wines, blends, and dessert and fruit wines. Year-round tastings allow you to sample a six-wine flight on a walk-in basis (or by reservation if your group exceeds eight people). Visitors can also make an appointment for a cellar tour or a wine tasting paired with chocolate truffles. Recent visitors enjoyed their wine tasting at Glenora, with some saying they appreciated the selection of cheeses available to purchase.

After you've enjoyed a cellar tour or a tasting overlooking Seneca Lake, retreat to The Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars, where you can stay in one of the Vintner's guest rooms – some of which feature fireplaces and whirlpool tubs – or the GSE Vineyard Cottage, complete with a fully equipped kitchen and sleeping space for up to six guests. You can also dine on-site at Veraisons Restaurant, which receives praise for both its food and its fast, friendly service.

Address: 5435 state Route 14, Dundee, NY 14837

Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards: Hector

Exterior shot of Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards.

Courtesy of Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards

Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards isn't just any winery; it's a rite of passage in the Finger Lakes. The historic farm-turned-winery offers wines, hard ciders and wine seltzers, all of which you can try in a regular tasting or even a private tasting. Available to groups of between seven and 12 people with advance reservations, the private tasting includes a pairing with locally sourced cheeses and meats.

Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards is especially famous for its award-winning Red Cat wine. Dubbed the "Original Hot Tub Wine," this sweet red wine has a story (ask your wine tasting guide) and a chant (which you'll likely hear and/or be singing by the time you leave). The winery's second location – Hazlitt Red Cat Cellars, in Naples, New York – is named for the wine, which is also an entire line of products including Red Cat Sangria, Red Cat Fizz (a bubbly wine) and White Cat (a sweet white wine).

Because regular wine tastings can accommodate groups of up to 18 people on a first-come, first-served basis, the winery can get busy. If you have to wait for a tasting (and even if you don't), pull up a seat at The Oasis, an on-site outdoor bar serving wine by the glass, wine slushies, local craft beers, hard cider, nonalcoholic beverages and light bites. Both Hazlitt locations are wheelchair-accessible and kid- and dog-friendly.

Address: 5712 state Route 414, Hector, NY 14841

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard: Dundee

Finger Lakes wineries

Courtesy of Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard

A pioneer of winemaking in the Finger Lakes, now-retired Hermann J. Wiemer comes from a long line of winemakers from one of the world's top riesling-producing areas in Germany . Wiemer's vine nursery, which opened in 1974, helped populate the region's vineyards and today provides tailored solutions to farmers and their vineyards nationwide; his namesake winery, which opened in 1979, has won countless awards for its dry rieslings. Head winemaker Fred Merwath, named Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast in 2021, was particularly praised for his biodynamic farming of riesling and chardonnay.

Previous visitors highly recommend making a wine tasting reservation well in advance of your visit. Wine is offered by the glass, bottle or in 2.5-ounce pours so you can design your own flight of wines by Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard – and by Standing Stone Vineyards, which was acquired by the winery in 2017. Specialty tastings and custom flights may be available with advance request; kids and leashed pets are welcome.

Heron Hill Tasting Room: Canandaigua

Heron Hill offers seven distinct rieslings – which span dry varietals to ice wines – and two locations: Its original Heron Hill Winery and tasting hall on Keuka Lake opened in 1977, while the Heron Hill Tasting Room on Canandaigua Lake opened in 2010. Both are worthy of a visit, but the latter is especially lovely. Heron Hill Tasting Room is situated in a renovated century-old barn overlooking the riesling and cabernet franc vineyards. It offers both indoor and outdoor seating plus wood-fired pizza in the summer months and live music on select days. Reservations are required for tastings, which include five wines.

Address: 5323 Seneca Point Road, Canandaigua, NY 14424

Keuka Spring Vineyards: Penn Yan

Patrons of Keuka Spring Vineyards praise the stunning views of Keuka Lake, the relaxing ambiance, the hospitality and, of course, the wine. Recent accolades include winning Best of Class for the 2020 Wiltberger Vineyard riesling at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, as well as high scores by Wine Enthusiast for two of its other rieslings.

Tastings feature six wines and are offered on a walk-in basis to groups of six people or less. Larger parties can purchase wine by the glass or bottle to enjoy with food – either their own picnic or something delivered from a Penn Yan eatery. Local cheeses, crackers and other snacks are also available for purchase on-site.

Miles Wine Cellars: Himrod

Finger lakes wineries

Beware the spirits at this early 19th-century Greek Revival mansion on Seneca Lake. Miles Wine Cellars' best-known offering is the "Ghost" wine, a blend of chardonnay and cayuga grapes that commemorates the departed among us. The winery offers beer, wine and reserve spirits tastings; groups of less than 10 people do not need a reservation.

Speaking of spirits, ghosts are said to haunt the property's historic inn, which features two newly furnished suites for overnight stays. If visiting in the summer, you can arrive by boat (a popular mode of transportation in the Finger Lakes) and have an ice-cold beer or a glass of wine at The Boathouse, a small dockside cafe that's typically open seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Address: 168 Randall Crossing Road, Himrod, NY 14842

Pleasant Valley Wine Company: Hammondsport

As the Finger Lakes' oldest winery, Pleasant Valley Wine Company has eight landmarked stone buildings dating back to 1860 that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the Great Western Visitor Center on-site, you'll discover the winery's surprising accomplishments, which include an honorable mention at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle for its sparkling catawba wine, the first American sparkling wine to win this type of award in Europe. That was only the beginning: The winery gained such a reputation for its sparkling wines that Pleasant Valley came to be known as the "Rheims of America."

Tastings and informative guided tours of the historic buildings are offered year-round. In summer and fall you'll need to make a reservation for a tour. Aside from the main location in Hammondsport, you can also taste Pleasant Valley wines at Caywood Vineyards in Lodi and Seneca Harbor Wine Center in Watkins Glen.

Address: 8260 Pleasant Valley Road, Hammondsport, NY 14840

Ravines Wine Cellars: Geneva

Finger lakes wineries

Owners Morten and Lisa Hallgren learned much of what they know about wine in the Provence region of France before settling at Ravines Wine Cellars. Together, they produce excellent, mostly dry rieslings, chardonnays, pinot noirs, a red meritage blend and more. Ravines' wines have been listed in the top 100 in the world by Wine Spectator Magazine, among other accolades. These wines can be sampled at two locations: the main one in Geneva or the Keuka Tasting Room in Hammondsport.

Traditional wine tastings in Geneva, which include five pours, are available for groups of up to six people by appointment only, though larger groups of up to 14 people can request tastings. You must make your reservation online. A tasting here could also be paired with seasonal bites from the popular Ravinous Kitchen. If you're planning to visit the Keuka location, reservations are recommended but not required.

Wagner Vineyards Estate Winery: Lodi

Not only will you find good wine at Wagner Vineyards, but you'll also find craft beer at Wagner Valley Brewing Co and lunch at The Ginny Lee Café. Wagner is one of a few wineries in the so-called "Banana Belt," a warmer microclimate on Seneca Lake's eastern shores. The 250-acre estate grows a variety of grapes, several of which have won wine competitions year after year.

Guided wine tastings include five wines of your choice and must be reserved in advance; you can set these up on the winery's website. More casual tastings are available on a walk-in basis as well. You can also enjoy wine – and beer – flights at the Vantage Point on Seneca (an enclosed deck) or at the picnic tables outside, weather permitting. Aside from the wine and beer, visitors rave about the property's informative and attentive staff.

Despite the Finger Lakes' reputation as a mostly white-wine destination, Chateau LaFayette Reneau manages to produce some delicious dry reds including cabernet sauvignon and merlot, as well as the area's signature cabernet franc. Another winery in the Banana Belt, this one sits about 5 miles north of Watkins Glen and offers tastings that include five pours and front-row views of Seneca Lake from both the indoor tasting room and outdoor deck. Reservations are highly recommended for groups with less than six people and are required for larger parties. Wine is also available by the glass. Additional offerings include the Vineyard Picnic Experience, with seasonal fare and a baguette to pair with a bottle of chilled pinot noir rose, and a five-room guesthouse for overnight stays. Previous visitors say they love the wine and appreciate that the winery welcomes dogs.

Here you can taste the winery's aged wines, which date back to its inception in 1997, accompanied by cheese and crostini. Reviewers note that this sustainable winery is slightly off the beaten path, and that while it's not located right on the water, it offers beautiful views of Cayuga Lake. If traveling by boat, you can park in one of the winery's eight boat slips.

The Finger Lakes Are About More Than Riesling

These destination wineries specialize in Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and more New York wine.

Dan Bell / Courtesy of Hickory Hollow Wine Cellars

Nestled in central New York between the Catskill Mountains and Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes AVA (American viticultural area) takes its name from a collection of eleven spindly bodies of water that affect the area’s climate and terroir, turning it into a prime location for prestige winemaking. Fans of Riesling (a light and fragrant white wine originating in Germany’s Rhine Valley ) already know that the Finger Lakes is a famous hotspot for New World Riesling growth and production, but winemakers from this region has no intention of resting on that grape alone. Instead, they’ve ventured into making Chardonnay , Pinot Noir , Cabernet Franc, and Blaufränkisch, as well as Georgian wines like Saperavi and Rkatsiteli. The thirteen wineries on this list represent the absolute best that the Finger Lakes has to offer.

Atwater Vineyards

A vineyard and winery on the southern end of Seneca Lake, Atwater Vineyards uses the slightly-warmer microclimate of its particular location to produce sophisticated European-style single varietals and blends. Atwater’s intense “Celsius” ice wine (made with botrytised Riesling), Cabernet Franc (rich with notes of red fruit and black pepper), and skin-fermented “orange” Pinot Gris are especially noteworthy. The winery’s tasting area includes an outdoor deck with direct views of Seneca Lake, which proves an ideal spot for enjoying a glass of wine and a locally-sourced cheese and charcuterie platter.

Barnstormer Winery

Also on the southern shore of Seneca Lake, Barnstormer Winery sources grapes from small-acreage vineyards located along this particular lake to create well-balanced, highly drinkable wines. The public facility is inside a beautifully restored 170-year-old farmhouse, and boasts a fireside tasting area where the staff can guide you through comprehensive tastings. Barnstormer’s Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Franc serve as excellent examples of red wines produced in cooler climates, thanks to their precise flavor balance and food-friendly nature. They also use Blaufränkisch and Sangiovese to make fruit-forward and refreshing rosés, and their dry and off-dry Rieslings hold their own among the Finger Lakes’ other prestige whites.

Bloomer Creek Vineyard

Natural wine isn’t just a trendy buzzword for winemaker Kim Engle of Bloomer Creek ––  it’s a way of life. Engle and his team claim three decades of experience with organic grape growing and low-intervention winemaking, and the wines that come out of this quaint winery on Seneca Lake are among the most experimental and innovative bottles in the Finger Lakes. Bloomer Creek’s grounds and tasting room remain closed to the public in the wake of the COVID pandemic, but natural wine enthusiasts can order bottles (like a racy and vibrant Riesling Pét-Nat and an herbaceous “orange” skin-fermented Gewürztraminer ) online until the winery’s public areas reopen.

Bright Leaf Vineyards

Compared to many other Finger Lakes wineries, Bright Leaf, which put in its first plantings in 2014, is something of a young upstart.  Winemaker Colleen Lukas and her team have already established a strong local reputation for its elegant French-style Chardonnays which benefit from the vineyard’s location on a limestone quarry that infuses the soil with minerality and smooth, earthy Lembergers and Cabernet Sauvignon . The winery’s property provides clear views of Cayuga Lake, and guests are welcome to enjoy their wine on the outdoor patio or on the lush green lawn.

Buttonwood Grove Winery

Cabernet Sauvignon is a grape that’s largely associated with warmer climates, from its homeland of Bordeaux to high-yield regions like Tuscany, Chile , and New Zealand. Therefore, it makes sense that wine tasters visiting the Finger Lakes might question the quality of Cab Savs from this (much cooler) area, but the team at Buttonwood Grove Winery is more than happy to chase those doubts away. Their Cabernet Sauvignon boasts serious dark-fruit flavor and a robust mouthfeel, and it’s in good company with Buttonwood Grove’s acclaimed dry Riesling, crisp Sauvignon Blanc , and French oak-aged Chardonnay.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

If not for Dr. Konstantin Frank, a viticulture Ph.D who came to the Finger Lakes from Eastern Europe and started planting European vinifera grapes in the late 1950s, the Finger Lakes wine industry may never have truly launched. Dr. Frank’s championing of vitis vinifera grapes (instead of the hybrid grapes that were the previous standard in the region) pioneered the production of Old World-style wines in the Finger Lakes, and after several generations, the Frank family still maintains a lofty level of quality in the wines made at their Keuka Lake property. In addition to its celebrated Rieslings, Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery is a leader in a growing (but still somewhat under-the-radar) trend in Finger Lakes winemaking: the production of Méthode Champenoise sparkling wines. Their Brut and Blanc de Blanc prove that the future of American sparkling wines just might be happening right now in Central New York.

Element Winery

Christopher Bates, a master sommelier who also happens to be one of the most prolific restaurateurs in the Finger Lakes, launched his own winery in 2009 with the goal of creating low-intervention wines that showcase the Finger Lakes’ terroir –– and pair nicely with the dishes served at his restaurants. Bates uses a minimalist approach to winemaking, allowing the natural flavors of the grapes to shine. While Element’s Chardonnays and Rieslings are noteworthy, Bates strives to produce red wines that can stand alongside European reds, and Element’s Can’t Stop Won’t Stop (an engaging and well-balanced blend of Cab Franc, Syrah , Gamay, Merlot , and Blaufränkisch) counts among its top sellers.

Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard

Courtesy of Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard

Conveniently located between Seneca Lake and Keuka Lake, the tiny village of Dundee is a prime centerpoint for any Finger Lakes wine tour, especially because it’s home to Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard, a destination-worthy purveyor of locally- and estate-grown wines. This vineyard’s namesake hailed from the Mosel Valley , so it stands to reason that Wiemer still focuses on expertly-crafted dry, off-dry, and sweet Rieslings. That said, they also dabble in Champenoise-style sparkling wines, well-rounded Cab Franc and Blaufränkisch, and even in Saperavi, a red wine from the nation of Georgia that’s becoming increasingly popular in the Finger Lakes. In addition to their single origins, Wiemer’s blends (like their bright and picnic-perfect Field White) are well-worth your attention.

Hickory Hollow Wine Cellars & Nathan K. Wines

If we could recommend one “winemaker to watch” currently located in the Finger Lakes, that designation would have to go to Nathan Kendall, a Finger Lakes native and internationally-trained vintner who’s the power behind Hickory Hollow as well as Nathan K., his own specialty label sold at Hickory Hollow. Kendall uses his considerable talent and knowledge to make sophisticated vinifera wines like Riesling, and Chardonnay, but also experiments with hybrid grapes like Delaware and Catawba. His chëpika project, a collaboration with acclaimed sommelier Pascaline Lepeltier , turns these commonly-found but little-respected Finger Lakes grapes into exceptional wines.

Hosmer Winery

Courtesy of Hosmer Winery

One of the oldest and most well-established wineries on Cayuga Lake, Hosmer Winery places major emphasis on conservation and sustainability in their grape-growing and winemaking practices. The Hosmer team believes that the natural Finger Lakes terroir, packed with silt and shale, should experience as little mechanical interference as possible, and they’ve been recognized by national conservation organizations for their efforts to reduce waste in their winemaking and packaging. Hosmer’s dry, semi-dry, and sweet Riesling, prove that sustainable wines don’t need to compromise on flavor, texture, or overall quality.

Kemmeter Wines

Kemmeter Wines, a tiny boutique vineyard and winery on Seneca Lake, is something of a local secret, due to the fact that Kemmeter only sells its very small-batch wines on-site (or online, for delivery to a very limited number of states). But visitors who make their way to the winery’s rustic barn and tasting room to participate in an intimate tasting with winemaker Johannes Reinhardt quickly discover that Reinhardt is doing something very special at his under-the-radar operation. Reinhardt came to the Finger Lakes from the German state of Bavaria, where he worked at family-run vineyards and gained an encyclopedic knowledge of Riesling. His wines  burst with fresh flavors of citrus, stone fruit, and minerals, but are also substantial enough to undergo cellar aging. Another Kemmeter highlight is the Pinot Blanc , a delicate, perfectly-calibrated white with notes of green apple and white flowers. While visiting Kemmeter, be sure to stop in at Sans Dumplings , a counter-service shop offering tender, juicy potstickers handmade by Reinhardt’s wife Imelda.

Ravines Wine Cellars

Courtesy of Ravines Wine Cellars

Morten and Lisa Hallgren, the husband-and-wife team behind Ravines Wine Cellars, passionately believe in the relationship between wine and food.. Morten Hallgren studied winemaking in France and brought his Old World expertise to the Finger Lakes, where he’s become locally famous for his very dry Rieslings, earthy and complex red blends, and bright, zippy dry rosés. On the food side of the operation, Lisa helms Ravines’ tasting-menu restaurant and produces small plates to accompany wine tastings, and her focus firmly rests on developing and executing seasonal dishes that complement the flavors of Ravines’ wines.

Red Tail Ridge Winery

At Red Tail Ridge, winemaker Nancy Irelan cultivates grapes that naturally thrive in cooler climates, like Riesling and Gewürztraminer, as well as  Northern Italian varietals like Teroldego and Lagrein. Irelan eagerly plays around with blends and bubblies, creating multidimensional wines like 2019’s Rebel With A Cause (a blend of Teroldego, Cabernet Franc, Blaufränkisch, and Lagrein), Méthode Champenoise sparkling wines, and Méthode Ancestrale Pét-Nats. Red Tail Ridge’s airy, sunny tasting room near Seneca Lake makes an excellent environment for tasting your way through their impressive lineup.

Planning a wine tour of New York’s Finger Lakes region? Here’s a review of several of the most popular Finger Lakes wineries!

All About Finger Lakes Wine

Just hours away from the East Coast’s bustling metropolitan areas is New York’s idyllic, bucolic Finger Lakes Region. Known for its picturesque farmland, quaint towns and villages, countless waterfalls and hiking trails , and namesake lakes, the region feels like a different planet from nearby NYC, Boston, and Washington, DC. If you’re looking for an escape from city life, there’s nothing quite like going to a place with more Amish buggies than cars, or where you can lay out on a lake all day.

But most importantly for this article, it also happens to be one of the largest and most historic wine regions in the United States.

Table of Contents

A *Very* Brief History Lesson

So how did the Finger Lakes region, so far north and so famous for its miserable winters, become such an important wine destination?

During North America’s last ice age, the Finger Lakes area was carved by vast glaciers and icefields. When the ice receded, eleven glacial lakes (a.k.a the Finger Lakes) were left behind, along with mineral and sediment deposits that made the land extremely fertile.

finger lakes

See how the lakes really do look like fingers?!

The first vineyard was planted here in 1829 and the first commercial wine company was founded in 1862. The region became famous for its sparkling wine and gained popularity as a tourist destination for those looking to escape the city. But in the earlier 20th century, a combination of Prohibition (the US’s very brief ban on alcohol) and phylloxera (a disease native to North America that is fatal to all European grape varietals) caused a massive decline in the wine industry, not just in New York, but nationwide.

Prohibition was repealed just a few years after it was implemented, but it wasn’t until 1962 that the phylloxera issue was solved by Finger Lakes grape-grower Dr. Frank Konstantin (more on that hero later – but for now, know that he saved the entire East Coast’s wine industry). Since then, the Finger Lakes region has become one of the premier places for North American rieslings and sparkling wines, with over 140 wineries currently operating.

With so many wineries, it can feel overwhelming to pick which ones to visit. And I am not going to even attempt to review all of them, considering my recent trip to the Finger Lakes was only for a few days (as much as I want to help you out, I can only drink so much wine before I forget which wineries I’ve even been too….). But, I CAN review the seven I visited, many of which happen to be the most popular and most well-known in the area.

*Disclaimer:* Finger Lakes wineries predominantly produce rieslings and sweet wines. Because of the northern climate, these are simply the grapes that grow best here. They are trying to increase the number of reds and drier whites that they produce, but that’s not what they excel at. That being said, I do not particularly like Riesling (dry or sweet) or sweet wines generally. A lot of the wineries are experimenting with unique varietals or different methods of winemaking, so it was fun to test out those wines.

But I did not *love* any of these wineries for their wine. That doesn’t mean they necessarily make bad wine. If you are a white or fruit wine lover, the Finger Lakes will be paradise for you. If you are like me, know the Finger Lakes is absolutely worth visiting, just don’t be disappointed if the wine doesn’t blow you away.

Getting There

As mentioned, the Finger Lakes region is just a few hours from most of the East Coast’s major cities. Driving is the easiest, as the highways are great and usually traffic-free. But if you don’t want to take a car, you can also take a bus from New York to Ithaca , the region’s largest town. And once in Ithaca, you can take a private guided tour of several local wineries.

Finger Lakes Wineries

Heron Hill Winery

Heron Hill Winery was the Finger Lakes winery I was most excited about, for several reasons.

1) I used to work at a winery in Virginia , Tarara (which is no longer open, sadly). Our winemaker, Jordan Harris, one of the most acclaimed winemakers on the east coast, left Tarara for the head winemaker position at Heron Hill. He hasn’t been there long enough to have bottled any of the wines under his supervision, but I wanted to see his new digs, so to speak.

2) Heron Hill is touted as having one of the “ top ten tasting rooms in the world .” That’s a pretty big title to live up to, so color me curious.

Heron Hill did end up being lovely. The world is a big place and I’ve been fortunate enough to visit some pretty amazing tasting rooms, and I would certainly not say this one ranks in the top 10 of the United States, much less the world. But it is lovely. It’s perched on top of a hillside with an incredible view of Keuka Lake .

The tasting room itself is very elegant, sort of renovated-Amish-barn-meets-Greek-revivalist (I know that makes no sense but I’m going with it). The inside has a high arched ceiling with exposed wooden beams and large windows that take advantage of the view. There’s also a stone patio area outside under an arbor.

The wine was decent. Nothing amazing, but also nothing terrible. Their port-style Velvet is amazing (and dangerous). A sip of that puppy with some dark chocolate = heaven. They also had some decent reds (a rarity in Finger Lakes wine country ). We took a bottle of their Chosen Spot, a red blend, home with us.

Heron Hill did not fully live up to my expectations, but they are worth visiting: they have one of the best views of the Finger Lakes wineries on this list and have some very drinkable wines (but I’d like to go back one day once Jordan Harris has taken over the reins).

Visitor Info:

  • Location : 9301 County Road, Hammondsport, NY
  • Hours : Open 7 days a week. Mon-Sat: 10 AM-5 PM, Sundays: Noon-5PM
  • Important note: They have two tasting rooms. The famous one is the one on Keuka Lake, not Canandaigua Lake.

Red Tail Ridge Winery

Here we have the tiniest tasting room on this list. It’s basically a shed, with some counters and stools for wine tastings. It’s comfortable and modern, but small. This isn’t a winery that you can hang out at for hours on end – they simply don’t have the space. But Red Tail Ridge offers some of the most unique varietals in the area, which sets them apart from other wineries. They are also the only LEED-gold certified green winery in New York state.

Red Tail Ridge Winery was opened in 2011, making it one of the newer wineries in the area. But in that short period, they’ve won a number of accolades, including a semifinalist spot in the Outstanding Food, Wine, and Beer Producer category for the coveted James Beard award.

Prior to coming to New York, the owners had been doing experimental projects in the California wine industry for 18 years. When they moved across the country, they brought that innovative experience with them. While Red Tail Ridge does grow the typical spate of Riesling, Chardonnay, and Gewurztraminer, they also grow a number of very unusual grapes. For example, they are the only winery in New York (and possibly in the United States) that grows Lagrein and Teroldego, two red grape varietals from northern Italy.

What they really excel at though are sparkling wines. Their keystone wine is Sekt, a champagne-style Riesling. My favorite (and the bottle we went home with) was their Petillant Naturel Riesling. (Quick wine lesson: Pet Nat is known as the quick and dirty way to make a sparkling wine. Whereas champagnes have to age and ferment for several years, pet nats only take 1-3. The result is a more natural wine with completely different notes. There are usually less bubbles than in a champagne but still enough to make the wine fun).

Visitor info:

  • Location:  846 State Route 14, Penn Yann, NY
  • Hours:  Open 7 days a week. Mon-Sat: 10AM-5PM, Sun: 11AM-5PM
  • Tasting price:  $10 a person
  • Reservations:  The website says that reservations are required, but when we arrived they had a sign saying “walk-ins welcome.” So maybe at least make a reservation for the weekends and busy times because it is such a small tasting room.

Glenora Wine Cellars

Glenora Wine Cellars is one of the oldest and most well-known of all Finger Lakes wineries. It appears on practically every list of must-visit wineries in the area. And yet if there’s one place that I recommend you not waste your time and money at, it’s this one.

Glenora opened in 1977, making it the oldest winery on Seneca Lake. First, the good things. It does have a beautiful, expansive view of said lake. It has an excellent deck to sit out on with a bottle of wine and lots of friends. It’s one of the few wineries that has an inn onsite, along with an award-winning restaurant. And their wine labels are stunning…. And that right there is how you know I’m out of compliments – I’m remarking on their wine bottle labels.

When we arrived for our tasting, the tasting room was a complete disaster. Behind the tasting bar, there were piles of dirty dishes, used cleaning rags, pallets of wine glasses waiting to be cleaned. I’m no germaphobe, but you’d think in a time when the entire world is freaking out over a disease that the winery would be more conscious of keeping up appearances of cleanliness. But apparently not.

The tasting bar itself was an assortment of rolling bars smushed together. In front of them, tasters had to sit in cheap folding chairs instead of bar stools, which provided no legroom up against the bar. The room felt chaotic and unorganized, with merchandise and wine bottles scattered everywhere. This was not the relaxing atmosphere one expects from a highly regarded winery.

And then there was the wine itself. As I said, I don’t go in for sweet wine, but sweet wine is the only thing of quality that Glenora produces. They did offer a few chardonnays and rieslings, but they were truly dreadful – I don’t dump out tasting wine much, but those got dumped immediately. If you like the idea of blueberry, apple, or pineapple (yes, PINEAPPLE) wine, you might love this place (admittedly my dad loves this type of wine, so I think he was in heaven).

Suffice it to say, I was underwhelmed. Maybe it was a fluke; maybe they’d had a really busy day and that explains the general disaster of the tasting room – I’ve worked in the industry and I get that things happen. But you only get to make a first impression once, and they failed at making a good one with me. My overall impression of Glenora was that they’ve been around for so long and are always so busy that they don’t feel like they need to work hard to win guests over or maintain a certain high-quality standard.

Visitor info (in case you ignore my advice and want to go here anyway):

  • Location:  5435 State Route 14, Dundee, NY
  • Hours:  Open 7 days a week, 10 AM-5 PM
  • Tasting price: $10
  • Reservations:  They do not accept reservations for basic tastings.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

If you only visit one of the many Finger Lakes wineries, it should be Dr. Konstantin Frank’s. Not only is it the most historically important winery in the area, but it also has the most fun and unique tasting experience.

Dr. Konstantin received his Ph.D. in viticulture from the University of Odessa, Ukraine, in 1930. But after surviving the Russian Revolution and two World Wars, he finally decided it was time to seek greener pastures, so to speak, and moved his family to New York in 1952. When he emigrated, he had no money in his pockets and spoke almost no English.

But what he did have was a knack for agricultural engineering. Up until this point, no one had successfully grown any European vinifera vines in North America – partly because of the native North American disease that almost always killed them, and partly because of New York’s cold climate. But Dr. Konstantin figured out that if you graft vinifera vines onto older, more resistant rootstocks, you could grow a plant that could survive both disease and harsh winters. So in 1958, he planted the first successful batch of vinifera vines in the United States, revolutionizing the US wine industry. Today, it’s hard to find an American winery that doesn’t grow vinifera grapes.

The winery is still run by the Frank family – Dr. Konstantin’s great-granddaughter is the current CEO. His innovative spirit lives on in the way the winery does business, produces wines, and conducts its tastings.

Unlike most wineries, which conduct the entire tasting from a single tasting bar, visitors to Dr. Konstantin Frank’s rotate through stations that focus on different aspects of the winery’s winemaking. At the first station, you learn all about their sparkling wines. Another talks about the wines made from those original 1958 plantings of riesling and Gewurztraminer. Yet another station focuses on the more experimental wines – for example, Dr. Konstantin’s was the first winery to grow Rkasiteli in the country, a grape native to the country of Georgia. Each station has a different tasting guide, and all were extremely friendly and knowledgeable.

  • Location: 9749 Middle Road, Hammondsport, NY
  • Tasting price:  $10 per person for the Progressive Wine Tasting (which is the basic one we did)
  • Reservations:  Reservations are required and should be made several days in advance. Go here to make them.

Hosmer Winery

Unlike most of the region’s wineries, Hosmer Winery is not situated next to one of the lakes. It’s a couple of miles away, nestled in between several farms. But despite that, it’s one of my favorite wineries on this list. Location is clearly not everything.

Hosmer’s vineyard dates back to 1930, and the winery itself opened in 1972. The tasting room is located inside of a 100+ year barn that still has the original wooden beams exposed. It’s both quaint and charming as well as elegant. It’s homey without being simple. And although there’s no view of a lake here, the farmland that the region is known for is idyllic and peaceful and because of this winery’s relative isolation, it felt like a retreat from the more popular spots in the area.

As far as the wines, their whites were some of the best we tried on this trip. We took home a couple of bottles of their Sauvignon Blanc. They also have several drinkable reds that would be perfect for enjoying out on the winery’s patio.

  • Location: 7020 State Rt. 89, Ovid, NY
  • Tasting price:  $12 per person
  • Reservations:  Not required but are recommended for weekends and other busy times. Go here to make them.

Boundary Breaks

We ended up at Boundary Breaks on a whim while trying to kill time before our reservation at a different winery, but it ended up being a really great whim! I would not have minded spending more time here.

At the time we visited, they were conducting all of their tastings outdoors. Which, considering the winery’s gorgeous view of Seneca Lake and the beautiful August weather in New York, was not a problem. If we had had more time, I would have loved hanging out at one of their many, many picnic tables overlooking that gorgeous view.

Like most Finger Lakes wineries, Boundary Breaks focuses on white wines, and particularly Rieslings. But they really go all out – they make, depending on the year, between 6-10 different bottles of riesling, from the super dry to the super sweet. This means that anyone, including myself, can find a riesling they enjoy. But they also grow Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and even offer an ice wine to try during a tasting (many of the wineries do make an ice wine but ice wine is expensive and labor-intensive, so this was the only winery we visited that actually let you taste it without buying a bottle).

  • Location: 1568 Porter Covert Rd., Lodi, NY
  • Hours:  Open 7 days a week, 11 AM-5 PM
  • Tasting price: $10 per person
  • Reservations: Reservations are not needed

Standing Stone Vineyards

Standing Stone Vineyards wins (in my opinion) for having the best tasting room. While most of the wineries pay tribute to the area’s historic agriculture roots with a charming farm-chic aesthetic, Standing Stone is very modern, sophisticated, and complimentary to its fantastic view (I know, I know, I say they all have great views – except you, Hosmer – but it’s REALLY true for Standing Stone!).

The oldest vines on this site date back to 1970. But in 2017, the owners of Hermann J. Wiemer vineyard (which we didn’t visit, but is one of the most famous of the local wineries) bought Standing Stone and built the current tasting room. So the winery is a fantastic mix of the new and innovative alongside a long history of New York winemaking.

The tasting operates very differently than other wineries. There is no set list of 1 oz. pours that you get to try. You can pick a flight, you can pick a variety of half-glasses, or you can do what we did and just ask your host to bring you whatever they think you should try. It’s a bit of a confusing system if you’ve never been to the winery and have no idea what you want, but fortunately, the staff are very friendly and helpful.

The wines were all very decent. They have a smaller selection than other local wineries, but we didn’t try any that we didn’t like. They grow an unusual red grape called Saperavi that hails from northern Italy. Their rosés and Gerwurztraminers were also very pleasant.

  • Location:  9934 Route 414, Hector, NY
  • Tasting price: There is no fixed tasting price. It depends on what you get.
  • Reservations:  Reservations are required. Go here to make them.

We visited the Finger Lakes area once quickly and always wanted to head back. I love the great selection of wineries you found in the area. That was one of the things we missed on our first visit. Amazing that Heron Hill Winery is said to have one of the top 10 tasting rooms in the world! Love when there are good pairings with the wine. And you can’t go wrong with chocolate pairings. Since hubby likes his wines sweet, I know there will be one choice for him.

Wow! Finger Lakes, is not known for it’s sweet wines. It’s known mostly for dry Riesling and it’s beautiful Cabernet Franc. Another great red wine produced there is Lemberger. Heron Hill’s tasting room is designed to resemble the inside of a wine barrel, not an Amish barn. Finger Lakes wine country is scenic and the wines superb. I hope you visit again. It’s one of my favorite regions, and I’ve visited wineries around the world.

I thought about visiting Finger Lakes area when I made a plan for our last summer trip to the New England through up state New York. But the timing wasn’t right. Although I’m not a wine drinker, I like to try or do wine tasting every now and then. Seems like the prices for wine tasting here are cheaper than in Fredericksburg, Texas.

We absolutely love visiting wineries so this is right up our alley. Dr. Konstantin’s winery sounds interesting too! As a scientist by day – I love anything technical or hands on like that and the fact that he was able to bring in these specialized wines is so cool!

Wineries are a wonderful experience, visited one in my neighborhood. I find them great more from photography point of view. Love your pictures.

I’ve always wondered what the Finger Lakes region has to offer, and this makes me want to visit more. It’s good to know that they specialize in sweeter wines; those probably aren’t my favorite either, but I can still appreciate them. Heron Hill sounds good, and it’s interesting that Glenora didn’t live up to its reputation! I guess sometimes places get hyped up, or like you said, maybe they had a really crazy day.

Wine tours are my favorite things to do! I would love to see one of these locations! This article is very detailed, makes me want to go ❤️

I’ve been to the Finger Lakes but never had the chance to go wine tasting. Can’t wait to visit all of these but the one. Heron Hill, Red Tail Ridge Winery, and Standing Stone would be at the top of my list. I’m a huge red wine lover but I do enjoy sparkling wines and Riesling from time to time. Plus the location is so beautiful so that alone would be worth it!

I think we have similar tastes in wine. I was thoroughly underwhelmed by Glenora and love Heron Hill.

Beautiful area to go and visit some wineries at! I like that the wine tasting isn’t overpriced either which you sometimes get with places that are growing in popularity.

I have never been to a winery before, so this post was a joy to read! So informative 🙂

I’ve never been to this area but it looks beautiful from your photos. I also find the history of how the Finger Lakes region was created so fascinating; it sounds similar to some of the geology in Iceland, which is one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen so far, so I guess we need to check out this region too 😊. Thanks for sharing this list and lots of helpful details! Xx Sara

I love visiting wineries and tasting rooms! Thank you for this great guide, there’s so much useful info here.

I so much love visiting the vineyards and tasting the wines with cheese platter. Nashik (India) is the wine capital of India, and I recently had an amazing experience there. I would love to visit the wineries mentioned in your post one day.

Great tasting guide! I want to visit!

I love exploring wine regions and comparing the different tasting rooms. I have a friend who lives near Finger Lakes, so this has been on my radar for a while now. However, I’m not usually the biggest fan of sweet wines, but the experience (and views!) still look like it would be worth a visit.

Absolutely love how you’ve categorised these. This was such an interesting read, I learned a lot as I mostly only know about our local South Africa. Wines.

Coming to this very late, but as a person who visits Finger Lakes wineries annually and adores the wines generally, I am always interested to hear other opinions about them. You are spot-on about Glenora; I visited them last in 2018 and it was generally mediocre to dreadful, other than a passable sparkling wine. Heron Hill did not leave a good impression when I went for the first time last year; it is very much a place that emphasizes quantity of visitors over quality of experience. Red Tail Ridge, Boundary Breaks, Standing Stone, and Konstantin Frank are all excellent; Hermann J. Wiemer and Kemmeter on Seneca Lake, and Weis and Domaine LeSeurre on Keuka Lake (and right next to each other) are also very much worth visiting.

I was also interested in the fact that you had worked at Tarara in Virginia. Back when I was living in Maryland, I did a couple of week-long tours of Virginia wineries in consecutive years, and Tarara was one of the (very few) good ones. Sorry to hear that it no longer exists.

How to Plan a Wine Tour in the Finger Lakes – Tips & Advice

The Finger Lakes is a stunning wine region in upstate New York that grows many cool climate grapes like Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc to name a few.

Throw on native US grapes, fruit wines, a growing beer scene, and impressive opportunities to get out in nature to hike to gorgeous waterfalls, and the region has something for everyone who may be visiting for a Finger Lakes wine tour!

Finger Lakes Location, Regions, and Styles

Damiani Wine Cellars

The Finger Lakes region in Upstate New York includes 11 lakes spanning approximately 50 miles east-to-west and 40 miles north-to-south that were said to be formed when glaciers carved deep into the land 20,000+ years ago. From the central part of Seneca Lake, arguably the most popular lake for wine tourism, the cities of Rochester (northwest), Syracuse (northeast), Ithaca (southeast), and Corning via Elmira (south) can all be reached in approximately 45 to 90 minutes by rental car – giving many easy access points for those traveling nearby.

This region has been gaining popularity since European grapes were first successfully planted in 1958 by acclaimed producer Dr. Konstantin Frank- whose iconic winery remains in operation today. In recent years, the Finger Lakes wine region has seen a boom in artisan producers making stellar products, particularly with Riesling, that would rival some of the top producers in Germany, France, and beyond.

While upstate New York is generally known for its oppressively cold winters, viticulture can occur thanks to the large, deep lakes that act as temperature-regulating bodies for the nearby vines. In the winter, most lakes freeze and help cool the vines such that budburst is delayed until after the risk of frost passes. In the fall, the lakes stay warm despite cooling air and allows grapes to ripen just a bit longer than they otherwise would.

Wine Grapes in the Finger Lakes

Although the region features 11 lakes, most wineries are found around three of the larger bodies of water- the y-shaped Keuka Lake, the nearly 40-mile-long Seneca Lake, and the equally large Cayuga Lake. Each of these is known for unique microclimates that allow grapes to grow and ripen. Southeast Seneca Lake has the most famous microclimate known as the “Banana Belt” thanks to the slightly warmer west-facing slopes than other areas nearby.

That being said, producers across most of the major lakes in the Finger Lakes make delicious wines that visitors should experience. So while you may see Seneca Lake pop up as the most prominent in Finger Lakes wine discussions, there are producers worth visiting across many and should be on your radar when exploring- we will be focusing on the big three in this guide in particular.

Wineries in the Finger Lakes tend to make wine from grapes tolerant of the region's cool climate, with Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, and Vignoles being among the most produced. Some producers, like Standing Stone on Seneca Lake, are also experimenting with growing Georgian grape varieties, like Saperavi, with overwhelming success due to having comparable climates. Likewise, other producers specialize in producing sweeter fruit-based wines and indigenous varieties to the USA like Concord, Niagara, and others.

As such, it is safe to say that the Finger Lakes offers wine experiences for all interests meaning guests of all backgrounds are sure to have a great time when visiting.

When to Visit the Finger Lakes

Pier in Seneca Lake

The Finger Lakes region is known for being an exceptionally cold climate in the winter months and a gorgeous outdoor recreation area in the summer months. January often has average highs of below 30 °F and July has an average high of just about 80 °F with seven or eight days of precipitation. Shoulder season months of May and October also tend to peak with average highs in the mid-60s as well.

In the winter, the blistering cold weather is also coupled with a fair bit of snow (upwards of 21 snow days in January) which can make the region's rural roads hard to drive on. So while many wineries may offer tours and tastings throughout the year, visiting in the winter months is generally discouraged.

Instead, the best months to visit the Finger Lakes tend to fall from May to October when the snow has melted away, the grapevines are growing, and the area's many state parks are at their most vibrant and are worth visiting outside of wine-drinking. Those who can plan a trip around peak fall foliage (typically early-to-mid October) will be in for a special treat and should plan to spend even more time hiking at parks and nearby waterfalls between sampling wine (more on those later).

Hermann J Wiemer

Although the three main lakes listed at the start of this guide appear close to each other (they are spaced about 25 miles apart from the next closest lake as the crow flies), the drive times to go from one lake to another can be substantial if only because the lakes are anywhere from 25 to 40 miles long north-to-south. To drive from a winery in the middle of the eastern side of Seneca Lake to the middle of the western side of Keuka Lake can take well over an hour, so being strategic in planning winery visits can maximize your experience overall.

For us, we personally like to cluster our winery visits to either one lake or even one side of a single lake on any given day. On Day 1 we may tackle wineries on the east side of Seneca Lake, on Day 2 we may do the west side, on Day 3 wineries in and around Keuka Lake, and so on. However you tackle this is up to you, but keep in mind that your logic may also change depending on where you stay in the region.

  • Please note : Our rough date ranges are only guidelines. Whether or not wineries are open during the range of dates listed above may vary and should be confirmed.

Planning Where to Stay in the Finger Lakes

Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel Room

When figuring out where to stay in the Finger Lakes, there are three main categories visitors tend to look at. They are the following:

  • Apartments, boutique hotels, and motels overlooking the lakes : These tend to be the closest to the wine region proper, but accommodation options can be sporadic or a bit more expensive.
  • In small towns at the edge of lakes : Penn Yan, Watkins Glen, Geneva, and Ithaca are often quite popular with visitors for the extra amenities like restaurants, bars, and shops.
  • In major cities approximately 45-75+ minutes away from the nearest lake : Rochester, Syracuse, and Corning are all within a reasonable driving distance for those who may want to visit the Finger Lakes on a single-day trip only.

For those who want to stay at a property with lake and/or vineyard views, several options exist on the hills surrounding the lakes. These include private apartment rentals on services like VRBO, boutique hotels, and motel-style accommodations. Although motels may have a connotation suggesting lower quality, many properties here offer modern amenities and comforts- the motel layout style of some properties is simply an artifact of the popular style during the Finger Lakes boom in the mid-20th century (that said, conventional motels exist for those on an extreme budget, too).

Staying in any of these options should be on the radar of those who want proximity to wineries, but they have the trade-off that they can be quite expensive and may be further away from some popular towns that have more restaurant amenities overall. A few spots of note include:

  • Great Location : The Inn at Taughannock Falls is a modern inn on the western shore of Cayuga Lake just a short drive from the famed waterfall of the same name.
  • Highly Rated : The Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars on the western shore of Seneca Lake offers lake views and vineyard proximity.

If you are the kind of traveler who enjoys being in small towns with a better selection of larger hotels, restaurants, and amenities outside of the property you are staying at, places like Penn Yan , Watkins Glen , Geneva , and Ithaca are for you. These towns have more hotels and modern infrastructure built up for visitors and are also conveniently located on one end of a lake- making travel logistics slightly easier.

Watkins Glen, on the southern shore of Seneca Lake, is arguably one of the more popular towns to stay in/near at because it is home to Watkins Glen State Park and is conveniently located midway between the three major lakes. Ithaca, on the southern shore of Cayuga Lake, is also a strong option for those who want even more amenities as many businesses can be found there supporting the college campuses of Cornell and Ithaca College; however, the drive west to Keuka Lake will be a bit longer. A few hotels worth considering include:

  • We've stayed at this hotel on past visits, and it is a favorite!
  • Highly Rated : Geneva on the Lake is an elegant hotel right on the northern side of Seneca Lake in Geneva.
  • Big Town Hotel : Argos Inn is a boutique hotel in the heart of Ithaca for those who want the most city-like amenities when visiting.

Finger Lakes Wine Tasting at Standing Stone

Finally, we come to the major cities close to the Finger Lakes, such as Rochester , Syracuse , Corning , and more. These offer the most amenities for visitors but tend to be about an hour from the closest shore of the nearest lake and upwards of two hours to the opposite shore one way.

Staying in these cities may be impractical for those who wish to explore the Finger Lakes over several days due to this distance. Still, they could be an option for those on an Upstate New York road trip who want to make a detour to a few popular wineries without staying overnight locally. However, the amount of driving here cannot be understated. That being said, of the three, the closest city is Corning in the south, approximately an hour from the southern tips of the lakes, and is home to the acclaimed Corning Museum of Glass – one of the most famous museums in the region.

So while some major cities are within close driving distance to the Finger Lakes, we treat them as great access points to fly into/out more than a base to stay at during a visit- the drive times are likely far too much for most visitors.

  • We typically do not make restaurant recommendations in our wine guides, but if you are exploring the Finger Lakes and are looking for a few gems, Dano's Heuriger offers delightful Viennese dining, and The Elf In The Oak is always a must-stop for a quick sandwich.

Driving vs. Finger Lakes Wine Tours

Harvesting Grapes

Driving to wineries on the popular lakes is straightforward for those who want to explore the Finger Lakes independently. Most wineries are located on, or just off, main roads passing along the lakes, so it is as simple as looking for a sign, turning off, and parking.

There are a few caveats that travelers to the Finger Lakes should note. First , some wineries are located further off the main roads, and a select few of these may have less-than-ideal road conditions to reach. These are minor concerns like potholes and gravel roads, but it is not unheard of to have to drive on some narrow, lesser-maintained roads all the same. Second , if you are visiting in the winter, or even during shoulder season, driving in the snow is a risk- we have experienced whiteout conditions in October! Finally , New York State considers drivers intoxicated at 0.8 g/L BAC too.

So while renting a car and navigating the Finger Lakes is fairly easy, there are some risks to consider around weather, minor road conditions, and the standard drinking and driving concerns.

For those who do not want to drive, there are several public (group) and private tours you may want to consider. A selection of a few companies we have found include:

  • Hiring a driver for a custom tour
  • Structured wine tours on specific lakes like Seneca Lake and Keuka Lake
  • Other themed wine and regional tours

Wineries in the Finger Lakes to Consider

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery in the Finger Lakes

By tourism standards, wineries in the Finger Lakes are very welcoming to visitors- much more than other wine regions worldwide. In our evaluation, most wineries have some form of offerings for guests, be it bottle sales, tastings, or, in some cases, full-on tours.

As such, it is pretty easy to read up on the 100+ wineries in the Finger Lakes, find a few you may like, and quickly check out their tasting options. Many wineries are moving to a reservation-based model for visitors due to the rising popularity of the Finger Lakes as a tourism destination in recent years. Our winery list below does not factor in this element, but those who plan ahead sufficiently far in advance will have the best luck in snagging spots at highly popular vineyards.

The following is a selection of Finger Lakes wineries we would consider visiting when exploring the region. These were handpicked after an evaluation of 3rd party wine reviews found online and confirming that each winery is generally open for tours or tastings to some degree. In addition, we always like to include some of the big/historic producers in any given wine region as it is always good to see what high-volume producers are doing in contrast to artisan producers that we personally enjoy. (For a review of Finger Lakes wineries we've personally visited, click the previous link!)

For convenience in planning, we have split the wineries based on the lakes they are nearest. As mentioned at the start of this guide, we have only evaluated wineries on Keuka Lake, Seneca Lake, and Cayuga Lake for now; however, wineries exist on some of the other lakes in the region.

Buying and Shipping Wine in the Finger Lakes

Ripe Grapes

For those who are visiting the Finger Lakes and looking to shop, you have several options you may want to consider.

First , virtually every winery in the Finger Lakes engages in cellar door sales for guests to pick up bottles currently in inventory. Some premium producers may even have older library wines available for those who want to purchase older vintages (Heron Hill is well-known for this one, although others may only release library wines randomly).

For those who are fans of an individual winery, you may also want to inquire about wine club memberships. These generally require a fixed allocation/purchase amount of wine throughout the year. Many wineries offer perks for those who sign up, such as tasting room credit and other premium experiences. Likewise, several producers may also offer discounts for half- or full-case purchases.

We also highly recommend jumping on any favorite producers' email list as well as you can get updates of new/limited releases and flash sales on things like shipping. The number of orders we've placed for six bottles for free (or sub $15) domestic shipping is not insignificant!

Second , if you cannot take bottles directly and are looking to ship, it may be worth discussing shipping options with the wineries- many producers can ship to several states within the USA for a nominal fee. This, naturally, benefits shoppers who buy bottles in higher quantities (half-case, full-case, etc.) but is an option worth checking to limit the bottles you have on hand. That being said, as each state in the USA has different wine laws, producers may have some limits on states that they can ship to.

Furthermore, if you are traveling from another US state, you may want to ask your favorite wineries what their distribution setup is like in the USA as many Finger Lakes wines stay within the country for sale. Widely distributed bottles tend to be the flagship / larger run bottles over highly artisanal options of limited release (that typically sell out rather quickly via direct sales), but it is worth asking about all the same- you may be surprised to find a favorite bottle is distributed at a store near your home!

Finally , some may want to pack bottles of wine to take home directly. For those who live within driving distance, like us, this one is easy- simply put cases in your car. But if you need to fly with wine, we have three methods that we generally recommend for putting wine in your suitcase:

  • Read our full  Wine Skins review  and packing tips here.
  • Wine Suitcases – Dedicated suitcases designed for wine bottles with a 6 to 12-bottle capacity (typical).
  • Wine Shipping Boxes  – If you buy a sufficient number of bottles from a friendly winery, you may be able to ask for a shipping box to pack wines (generally up to 12 bottles per) and check on an airplane as you would a suitcase.

When taking wine on a plane, remember that these must be within your checked luggage, and your airline may have additional rules such as weight limitations and added bag fees you will have to plan around. If a favorite winery offers a shipping deal and you purchase a sufficient number of bottles, there could be a chance that this costs less than flying with the bottles outright!

Ultimately, several great options exist for buying wine in the Finger Lakes. But for those traveling within the USA, do not discount shipping options directly from a winery if only because the sometimes low price point for shipping can make the logistics of buying wine a bit easier.

Non-Wine Activities in the Finger Lakes

Taughannock Falls in upstate New York

Finally, as with most wine regions, there are a wealth of activities that you may want to consider when exploring upstate New York. From museums to nature, breweries to restaurants, and so much more, the area in and near the Finger Lakes has no shortage of things to do!

On the nature side, many great parks within a short drive of the lakes are must-sees. Parks like Watkins Glen State Park , Robert H. Treman State Park , and many waterfalls in upstate New York are can't-miss experiences if you are in the mood to hike (don't skip Taughannock Falls!). For those on a larger road trip, Letchworth State Park to the west of the Finger Lakes proper is also a favorite of many visitors on a broader itinerary.

Likewise, while the Finger Lakes may be a great temperature-regulating body allowing grapes to grow, there are several water-based experiences visitors may want to check out like sailing, kayaking, and more- when the weather is nice, at least.

Corning Museum of Glass

There are also plenty of museums near the Finger Lakes , with two of the most famous being the Glen H. Curtiss Aviation Museum near Keuka Lake and the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning- roughly an hour south of Seneca Lake. That being said, it is worth noting that the Corning Museum of Glass is significantly larger than you may expect and could make for an entire day trip in its own right. For those traveling further in Upstate New York, there are many incredible museums in Rochester just over an hour away from the north shore of Seneca Lake, including the Susan B. Anthony House , the Eastman Museum (of Eastman-Kodak fame), the Harriet Tubman Home , and the massive Strong Museum of Play (great for kids and adults!) to name a few.

Finally, for the non-wine drinkers in your group who may still want a libation (and everyone else who wants a palate cleanser), do not overlook the many breweries and distilleries that are popping up in the region as well. The Finger Lakes is starting to become known for its beer scene just as much as the wine!

Overall, the Finger Lakes in upstate New York is the premier wine region in the northeast United States. For those who love cool climate grapes, particularly Riesling, you have a wealth of stellar producers to check out that would give their European counterparts a run for their money. But even if you are a more passive wine consumer, the Finger Lakes has something for everyone. Just be sure to get out for a hike (or three) between your wine-tasting experiences- you won't regret it!

9 Keuka Lake Wineries You Should Visit on Your Next Trip to the Finger Lakes

Michele · August 14, 2022 ·

Two glasses of rose wine on a railing overlooking Keuka Lake in the Finger Lake, NY.

Planning a trip to Keuka Lake wineries ? If so, you’re in for a treat!

Expect to sip award-winning wines while gazing at vineyard-covered hillsides that slope down to meet the pristine waters of Keuka Lake. You’ll find scenic outdoor seating areas where you’ll be tempted to linger for hours, taking in the quiet rhythm of the Upstate New York countryside. You’ll also encounter knowledgeable wine educators and winemakers who are passionate about their craft.

Keuka Lake is located in the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York, and is one of eleven lakes that make up the region. It is uniquely Y-shaped, giving it the nickname of the “Crooked Lake.” Situated between Seneca Lake to the east and Canandaigua Lake to the west, it’s a popular summer destination, as evidenced by the number of vacation cottages that ring the shoreline.

Keuka Lake is anchored by the village of Hammondsport to the south. Penn Yann sits at its northwest branch, while Branchport is the village on the northeast tip.

A field of wildflowers and vineyards leading down to a lake in the distance.

Read on about the nine Keuka Line wineries we loved. We did not—by far—have the chance to visit every Keuka Lake winery; we’ll have to work on that on our next trip! But if you’re like us and you love a nice winery with lake views, some good vino, and pleasant relaxing scenery, visit these wineries around Keuka Lake.

You’ll also find background information about the region, resources on Keuka Lake wine tours, tips on visiting wineries, and much more! Looking for a place to stay? Read about accommodations on and near Keuka Lake.

9 Excellent Wineries on Keuka Lake

1. rooster hill vineyards.

A stone statue of a rooster at the entrance to Rooster Hill Vineyards in the Finger Lakes, NY.

A large sculpture of a rooster greets guests at the tasting room entrance, which was the first sign that we would enjoy ourselves. To me, the connotation of wine tasting is highbrow and can therefore be a little intimidating. The rooster let us know not to take things too seriously!

Customers can choose to stay indoors and do their wine tasting around a large tasting bar or opt to sit outside on a spacious patio and sample wines accompanied by views of sloping vineyards leading down to Keuka Lake.

From beginning to end, Rooster Hill Vineyards put out a casual, friendly vibe. For the tasting experience, we each chose our own personalized flight. We got checked in on often to see if we had any questions and to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Rooster Hill was the very first winery on Keuka Lake we visited, and was the perfect kick-off for the rest of our trip. 2. Keuka Spring Vineyards

A bottle of red wine sitting on a table on a deck at Keuka Spring Vineyards in the Finger Lakes, NY.

On a hot summer Friday, just after noon, Keuka Spring Vineyards was hopping with customers, making it obvious the weekend here was already in full swing!

Inside, a wine bar faces out toward views of their vineyard and the lake beyond. Friendly wine associates pour samples and chat with customers. Outside, there’s plenty of seating in both covered and uncovered spaces, and more of those sweeping lake views.

Founded in the early 1980s, Keuka Spring Vineyards is a farm winery. Around 30 percent of their wines are made from estate grown grapes. The rest comes from grapes grown in New York State.

Light snacks are available and guests are welcome to bring their own food and picnic in the outdoor seating areas. 3. Vineyard View Winery

A tower of five wine samples overlooking a vineyard at Vineyard View Winery in the Finger Lakes, NY.

Customers can choose to sample wines here by the flight, glass, or bottle. We opted for a shared flight called  On Cloud Wine , which is a combination of their white, rose, and red selections, which we brought out on the deck so we could get more of those awesome Keuka Lake views!

Vineyard View Winery has been in business for nearly a decade but their grape-growing experience stretches back five generations, when the family first began cultivating grapes on the property.

Local cheeses and light snacks are available for purchase, and the Vineyard View Food Truck is on site seasonally. Keep an eye on their website for other seasonal events, including Yoga and Mimosas , and Pizza Thursdays . 4. Hunt Country Vineyards

Inside the tasting room at Hunt Country Vineyards in the Finger Lakes, NY.

Don’t let the lack of lake views stop you from visiting this one. Set on a country road off Route 54A, you can sip wine outside at tables nestled between vineyards or overlooking a rolling rural landscape.

Their country views aren’t the only thing that sets them apart. The folks at Hunt Country Vineyards come from seven generations of farmers and have been making wine since 1981. They’ve also won awards for their efforts toward sustainability.

In addition to avoiding synthetic fertilizers, they employ a 348-panel solar system for electricity, and their parking lot has five electric vehicle charging stations.

Inside, there’s a large gift shop selling an array of snacks, souvenirs, and wine accessories. Whatever their secret is, Hunt Country is doing it right, judging by the happy wine-tasters scattered about the property. They also offer tons of cool seasonal events including Summer Yoga in the Vineyards , a vineyard trolley tour, live music, and an annual Harvest Festival in October. 5. Point of the Bluff Vineyards

Two long and narrow bocce courts behind Point of the Bluff Winery in the Finger Lakes, NY.

Maybe it’s the bocce court out back, the on-site barbecue food truck, or the friendly wine associates, but Point of the Bluff made us feel like we were hanging out at our local neighborhood pub.

We felt comfortable chatting with our wine associate as she refilled our glasses and gave us background information on the winery and wines.

We even learned that Point of the Bluff is closely affiliated with Rooftop Reds, a rooftop vineyard in New York City that we happened to visit the previous month. The Rooftop Reds founders transported Finger Lakes soil to their location at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They use it to grow their rooftop vineyard, then send their grapes back to Point of the Bluff winemaking facilities.

If you want to sample vino that comes from a Brooklyn rooftop winery, look for the Rooftop Reds label at Point of the Bluff Winery.

Point of the Bluff hosts many special seasonal events including live music, large concerts, a farmer’s market, special wine dinners, and yoga sessions–which include wine, obvs! 6. Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

View from Dr. Konstantin Frank winery of a country road, vineyards, and the lake.

“If you dislike all sweet wines, you may not have tried the right one.”

This was my biggest takeaway from this winery that’s credited with being the first to plant vinifera vines in the Eastern United States, which founder Dr. Konstantin Frank did in 1957. Our wine educator said this, and it proved to be true when I tried—and very much liked—one of the sweeter wines of our guided tasting experience.

And while I may not have totally converted to being a sweet wine drinker, I liked how one small experience opened my mind and palate a little wider.

Learning experience aside, Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery runs an incredibly efficient operation. When we checked in for our reservation, we were given a choice between an independent and guided wine tasting experience. Because I knew this winery had a lot of history behind it, we chose the guided option. This consisted of a wine educator talking us through a list of wines and discussing the winery’s background, and the Finger Lakes as a wine region in general.

All this took place on a spacious deck overlooking vineyards and farmland and those clear Keuka Lake waters. There was definitely something about the wine, the setting, and overall experience that made us want to linger here.  Check business hours . ✔️ Winery with lake views 🍷 Recommended wines: Brut 2019, Magrit Dry Riesling, Rkatsiteli, Lena Address: 9749 Middle Road, Hammondsport, NY Phone: 800-320-0735

7. Heron Hill Winery

Rows of vineyards with the exterior of Heron Hill Winery in the distance.

From the moment we turned into the long uphill driveway, I loved Heron Hill Winery for their grandiosity.

The large building that houses the tasting room is a pale yellow color, causing it to stand out among the tall green trees behind it and the equally green and lush vineyards in front. What looks like a bell tower–and is actually named Heron Hill Tower–is in the middle of the building, causing the whole thing to resemble a grand church or mosque.

Inside, the tasting room is bright and cheerful, adding even more to the overall appeal. We needed a break from the heat, so we sat inside for our wine tasting, though there’s also a deck and additional outdoor seating. From both inside and out, the views down the long driveway to the lake are stunning.

We did a standard guided tasting on our visit. Those interested in a deeper experience should consider the Tower Tasting Experience (available on Fridays only), a guided tasting of premium wines that takes place up high in the Heron Hill Tower.

In business for more than 50 years, Heron Hill owners Josephine and John Ingle practice sustainability in winemaking and beyond, even growing their own organic food on their property.  Check business hours. ✔️ Winery with lake views ✔️ Member winery of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail 🍷 Recommended wines: Classic Dry Riesling, Ingle Vineyard Riesling, Ingle Vineyard Cabernet Franc Address: 9301 County Road 76, Hammondsport, NY Phone: 800-441-4241

8. Bully Hill Vineyards

A colorful flower garden at the entrance to Bully Hill Vineyards.

More than any other one mentioned here, Bully Hill Vineyards is a destination winery.

The Bully Hill restaurant, with seating both indoors and out, is very popular. The service is cafeteria-style (customers order at a counter and a server delivers it), the food is hearty and tasty, and wine slushes are on the menu!

There’s plenty to do before and after your meal, too.

In the tasting room, sample five pre-selected wines and walk away with a souvenir glass. Then head to the on-site museum (open seasonally) to learn the history of Bully Hill, see what antique winemaking equipment looks like, and view artifacts from the early days of the wine industry in New York.

You can also visit the adorable resident goats, and finally, pick up a souvenir or two in the gift shop on your way out. 9. Weis Vineyards

The backs of around a dozen people sitting around a bar inside the tasting room at Weis Vineyards in the Finger Lakes, NY.

A German winemaker came to the Finger Lakes and combined his lifelong experience with the growing conditions of the Keuka Lake hillside. That, in a nutshell, is how husband and wife team Hans Peter and Ashlee Weis founded Weis Vineyards, a boutique winery that opened it doors in 2017.

There are a lot of factors that make Weis Vineyards appealing. The sleek tasting room was once a schoolhouse, originally built in the 1800s, and there’s additional space for tasting in a cozy renovated barn. There’s also plenty of seating outside. The whole property is attractively chic and the friendly atmosphere beckons people to relax and linger.

As for wines, Hans Peter found the soil and climate was similar to that of his hometown, leading to Weis Vineyards’ focus on German-style wines. Should I Book Reservations at Keuka Lake Wineries?

Maybe. The first thing you should do is check the winery website to see if they accept reservations. Some do, some don’t. Wineries that require reservations may book up quickly in the summer and fall, so if there’s one you don’t want to miss, be sure to book ahead of time.

Personally, we don’t prefer booking reservations beforehand. We’re OK with being flexible, for one thing. So, if one winery is full or crowded, we’re happy to move on to the next one.

We also don’t want to follow a schedule, where we have to be somewhere at a certain time. After all, wine tasting is meant to be relaxing and fun rather than schedule-driven. We did, however, make a reservation for Dr. Konstantin Frank. This was our ONE must-visit winery (and should be for you, too—it’s spectacular!).

Keuka Lake Wine Tours

Close-up shot of grape vines.

I highly recommend hiring a wine tour service if you’re a) celebrating a special occasion, b) don’t particularly like driving long distances on rural roads, or c) want to enjoy your wine tasting experience without worrying about appointing a designated driver.

Several wine tour companies in the Finger Lakes offer Keuka Lake wine tours. The following highly rated companies will help you tailor your wine tour, pick you up at a location of your convenience, and provide you with safe, experienced drivers:

  • Finger Lakes Winery Tours
  • Grapevine Country Tours
  • Sip Back and Relax Tours
  • Lightning Limousine and Transportation

If you want to use the “your car + our driver” model,  Main Street Drivers  supplies drivers (insured and background checked) to take you to the wineries in your own car. This tour model cuts down on the hourly rate typical of other tour companies.

Tips for Visiting Keuka Lake Wineries

Lush green vineyards growing on the shores of Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes, NY.

  • Decide how many wineries you want to visit. I max out at three in one day. A person can only drink so much wine, especially when you start at 11 a.m.! I also read somewhere about “palate fatigue,” where after three wine tastings, they all start to taste the same.
  • Please don’t drink and drive! Individual wine samples are small but add up quickly. Appoint a designated driver or see the Keuka Lake Wine Tours section above for tour company recommendations.
  • Plan where you’re going to eat. The wineries around Keuka Lake are spread out in a very rural region, often without any other businesses around. A little pre-planning is necessary.
  • Are they open on the day you want to visit? Many Keuka wineries are open year-round but always confirm ahead of time.
  • Do they require reservations ? Some do, others recommend them, while others don’t accept them at all.
  • Do they have a limit on group sizes ? Some will allow groups of 6-8 people max, and only accommodate limos and tour buses at certain times.
  • What is their policy on pets ? Dogs are typically welcome at Keuka wineries, but rules around them vary.
  • Do they serve food or snacks ? Many wineries bring in local food trucks, offer food specials, or allow guests to bring their own food to eat on the premises.

The Keuka Lake Wine Trail

Seating areas, vineyards, and a red barn in the back yard of Vineyard View Winery in the Finger Lakes, NY.

There are now approximately 20 wineries around Keuka Lake. Matt and I have visited about half of them and all offer something unique, whether in their fabulous wines, panoramic views, friendly staff, or a combination of all of the above.

Of the Keuka Lake wineries, only five of them are part of the established  Keuka Lake Wine Trail . That simply means that those five wineries (Heron Hill Winery, Hunt Country Vineyards, Keuka Spring Vineyards, Vineyard View Winery, Weis Vineyards) have agreed to be members of the official wine trail consortium.

This benefits winery guests, who can receive discounts at the member wineries by purchasing the Keuka Lake Wine Trail Tasting Passport . The passport costs $50 and includes a one-time standard tasting at each member winery. Considering individual wine tastings typically range from $10-15, the passport could save you a little money.

Keuka Lake Wine Trail Passport holders will also receive discounts on bottles of wine and gift shop items. Note that the passport is only good for groups of six people or less.

Visiting Keuka Lake Wineries: The Experience

A flight of wines to sample at an outdoor table overlooking a lake.

We visited wineries that were both on and off the established Keuka Lake Wine Trail. It makes sense that, because of the discounts offered by the passport, the five member wineries were more often busier than the non-member wineries.

In general, tasting experiences vary from winery to winery. Some are more formal and some less so. There’s usually a guided tasting option, where customers select a certain number of wines to try. A wine associate pours each sample for you while providing a little background information and answering questions about what you’re tasting.

Many wineries also offer wine flights, in which your tasting experience is more of an independent one. Customers usually also have the option to purchase wine by the glass or bottle as well. For non-wine lovers, many also serve at least a few types of beer.

For a standard wine tasting, customers usually select around 4-8 wines to sample. The cost ranges from approximately $10-15 per person. Matt and I often share a guided tasting or flight if one of us (usually him) is the designated driver.

Keuka Lake wine is much like wine in all of the Finger Lakes region. Dry and semi-sweet Rieslings are popular white wines. Red wines usually include Cabernet Franc and Lemberger. In the description of wineries above, I included recommended wines to try, which indicate either wines we liked or wines that are best-sellers at each particular winery.

History of the Keuka Lake Wine Industry

Antique wine-making equipment in a wine history museum.

There are four established wine trails in the Finger Lakes: those on Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, and Canandaigua lakes .

But it was Keuka Lake that was the winemaking pioneer.

Around 900 years ago, the Owasco Native American tribe brought agriculture to the area, proving the banks of Keuka Lake to be fertile and fruitful. By 1829, white settlers had commandeered the area, and when a church reverend planted grapes to be harvested for Communion wine, the soil and climate revealed itself to be ideal for growing grapes.

In 1860, Pleasant Valley Wine Company was established and is now the oldest winery in the Finger Lakes.

Nearly a century later, Dr. Frank Konstantin, founder of his eponymous Keuka Lake winery, planted European grape varieties here. His Riesling’s gained attention and the wine industry began to take notice of the Finger Lakes.

What Makes Keuka Lake Special?

A rainbow in the clouds at sunset over Keuka Lake in Hammondsport, NY.

Keuka Lake is probably most famous for its unique Y shape, a distinction that sets it apart from every other lake in the region.

The southern-most shore (the foot of the “Y”) is in Hammondsport, while the eastern branch extends up to the village of Penn Yan and the western branch culminates in Branchport. Keuka College, a small, private college, is located in Keuka Park, just a few minutes south of Penn Yan.

Keuka means “canoe landing” in the Iroquois language and “lake with an elbow” in the Seneca language. Keuka Lake is sometimes called the “Lady of the Lakes,” but is better known by the nickname “Crooked Lake.”

Another quirk that sets Keuka Lake apart from the other eleven Finger Lakes (and every other lake in the country) is that it flows both north and south. This occurs when south-moving waters exit the west branch and meet up with water that flows north until it exits into Seneca Lake via the Keuka Lake Outlet.

If you’ve ever walked or biked on the Keuka Lake Outlet Trail, you’ve seen the final path these waters take.

Just a glimpse of Keuka Lake reveals that it’s smaller than both Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake, Keuka’s neighbors to the east. The shorter distance across the water to the other side and the steep slopes that rise up from the shores create a noticeably dramatic and rustic effect. The winding roads and rolling hillsides surrounding the lake add to the bucolic scenery.

FAQs about Keuka Lake & Keuka Lake Wineries

A glass of red wine sitting on a wooden railing with a view of fields and a lake in the background.

Keuka Lake’s average depth is 183 feet, which is shallow when compared to Seneca Lake’s average depth of 618 feet. The relatively shallow depth means that it maintains a higher temperature and is considered one of the warmer Finger Lakes for swimming.

Keuka Lake is nearly 20 miles long and 1.9 miles wide at its widest point. Driving non-stop, it takes about an hour to drive around Keuka Lake.

Everything stated above! Warm, crystal-clear waters, steep, vineyard-covered slopes, and wineries with awesomely scenic vistas and award-winning wines. Oh, and that Y-shape that earns it the nickname “Crooked Lake.”

If you like wine (and you’re over 21), then absolutely yes! You’ll be able to try new wines and learn some history of the Keuka Lake wine industry, all while getting a good dose of the culture and scenery of the region. Whether you’re visiting Hammondsport, enjoying a lake vacation, or just passing through the region, visiting a Keuka Lake winery can greatly enhance your visit.

Absolutely! Your wine associate/wine educator is not only pouring your tasty wine samples, he or she is doing it with a wealth of knowledge that they can’t wait to passionately impart to you. At minimum, tip as you would at any bar or restaurant. Feel free to leave more if you were especially pleased with your experience.

How to Get to Keuka Lake

Keuka Lake is located in the western part of the Finger Lakes in Upstate New York, amidst pastural farmland, rolling fields, and long and winding roads.

In other words, it’s kind of in the middle of nowhere where transportation is concerned. That means driving a car—whether your own a rental—is the most convenient way to get to Keuka Lake.

Approximate driving distance and time from major cities to Hammondsport, NY:

  • Rochester:  70 miles (113 km). 1.5 hours.
  • Syracuse:  95 miles (152 km). 2 hours.
  • Toronto:  208 miles (335 km). 4 hours.
  • Philadelphia : 280 miles (450 km). 4.5 hours.
  • New York City:  290 miles (466 km). 5 hours.

Other transportation options:

  • By train:  Amtrak to Bath, NY. Bath is seven miles south of Hammondsport.
  • By air : Fly to Rochester International Airport (60 miles (113 km) from Penn Yan) or Elmira-Corning Regional Airport (40 miles (64 km) south of Hammondsport)

As a final thought, I hope you get to experience the magnificent beauty of the Keuka Lake wineries. This region is an ideal example of all that makes traveling in New York State so special.

Having grown up in Upstate New York, I always enjoyed the finger lakes and wine region of New York state. After my daughter graduated from college in the region, I went into the wine country with friends. It was a beautiful day, and the vineyards were offering samples of their wines. So, we drove around Seneca lake stopping at several vineyards along the way. It was as good as any wine country in America. ( And I have been to many).. Just the countryside is worth visiting in the finger lakes region. Making the vineyards a bonus. Summer is the best time to go. ( Though Autumn is also recommended). Most vineyards have great and friendly staff on site. I will continue to visit as possible and convenient!!! Read more Written January 30, 2024

15 Things To Do In Finger Lakes: Complete Guide To New York's Scenic Region

I t only takes a glance at the map of New York to understand how the quaint city of Finger Lakes got its name. Over 11 slender lakes flow across the city, shaped like fingers extending from North to South; the five largest lakes are Seneca, Cayuga, Keuka, Canandaigua, and Skaneateles. This region is also famous for being the largest wine producer in New York. With over 400 wineries, the area attracts many visitors with tasting tours and world-class wine.

Thanks to the lakes, it is also a hot spot for fishing and an outdoor lover's paradise. The area also boasts gorgeous hiking trails, boating, and several other water sports making it an ideal place for a family getaway. From the Strong National Museum of Play to the Watkins Glen State Park or the Seneca Wine Trail, there are countless things to do in the Finger Lakes region.

UPDATE: 2023/09/24 13:10 EST BY LANE VASQUEZ

Here Are The Best Things To Do In The Finger Lakes Region

Wondering what to do in the Finger Lakes region? Check out the complete guide to the Finger Lakes in New York's most scenic region, updated with more attractions, traveler tips, and more.

Things To Do

There's no shortage of things to do in Finger Lakes, whether visitors want to sip on wine, hike to waterfalls, or even go underneath the Finger Lakes on a tunnel tour . Once winter arrives, the place is ripe with snow activities like skiing and snowboarding. Here is the ultimate travel guide to Finger Lakes.

Tour Cornell University

One thing to see while in the Finger Lakes area is to tour or at least visit Cornell University. This is a private Ivy League statutory land-grant research university based in Ithaca, New York, and is home to some of the nation's greatest scholars.

Notably, Cornell has a few famous graduates, including Bill Nye, Anthony Fauci, Jane Lynch, and even Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

George Eastman Museum

Also known as the George Eastman House, this museum is perfect for history and film buffs. Notably, the George Eastman Museum features the world's oldest museum dedicated to photography and one of the world's oldest film archives.

Here, tourists can experience an intimate look into these collections, as well as other aspects of the state's history. The museum is in Rochester, New York, and opened in 1949.

  • The hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 5 PM, Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM, and they are closed on Monday.

Cornell Botanic Gardens

Circling back to Cornell University, there are stunning botanical gardens to see. The Cornell Botanic Gardens sit adjacent to the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, New York, and is the perfect way to spend an afternoon in Upstate NY.

The gardens consist of 25 acres of botanical gardens and 150 acres of the F. R. Newman Arboretum and are filled with plants from around the area, as well as showy perennial species. If visitors want to enjoy the crisp weather of the Finger Lake region, this garden is a great choice.

  • Is Cornell Botanic Gardens free? Yes, there is no admission cost. However, the most convenient parking is paid.

Hike The Finger Lakes Trail

One of the best things to do in the Finger Lakes region is to head outdoors. For the uninitiated, the Finger Lakes Trail is a massive footpath that runs over 1,000 miles all through some of the most scenic areas of New York. It trails through various attractions, including Niagara Falls, the Catskills, and the Syracuse region.

  • Walk a short portion or take a longer hike along the Finger Lakes Trail; an official Finger Lakes Trail website offers up maps, trail conditions, special sights to see, and more.
  • Fall is an excellent time to explore the trail's scenic offerings .
