Had travel insurance before and was satisfied with the price of cover received. Contacted for insurance for this year and delighted with my cover. Reasonably priced, in fact couldn’t be bettered.

What previously had taken us a 2 hour to get a quote with other companies was achieved in 20 mins with none of the stress. Very pleasant customer experience. No repetition of questions. No confusion over medicines. Would highly recommend

Patrica was most helpful

Patrica was most helpful. She helped me fill out my form for travel insurance with you. When I rang back to take out the insurance your other staff members were just as helpful in tweaking the dates and confirming the insurance cover. I shortly received my cover by email. Thank you, Christine.

Exorbitant extra charge

I received the documents from you this morning and after reading it I rang your office to say that I would be taking a walking stick just in case I needed in and your representative told me that you will increase my payment by over £35 , which seems exorbitant. Next time I go on holiday later this year I shall certainly not use your services.

Reply from Free Spirit Travel Insurance

Dear Mrs Cutland I hope this message finds you well. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, regarding the recent update to your medical declaration and the associated additional premium. Your satisfaction is of utmost importance to us, and we appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns. We understand that any changes to your policy, especially those resulting in an additional premium, can be frustrating. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused. Whilst we wouldn’t usually record the use of mobility aids, unfortunately the medical condition declared asks this specifically, therefore we have needed to declare it. As part of our duty of care, it is essential for us to keep your policy up to date with the most accurate information, including any medical changes. If the policy is not updated to reflect the changes, it could result in a claim being refused or declined. If you feel we have misunderstood the situation, please feel free to reach out to us directly, and we will do our utmost to find a resolution. Yours Sincerely Jonathan Swatton Customer Service Manager

The important thing for me was that…

The important thing for me was that Free Spirit have no problem in offering me an insurance for an over 80 year old. I was recomended to use them by someone who has found them to give a good service. I have since done the same for a friend of mine in the same age bracket. The call to them was efficient and the documentation arrived quickly.

I’ve used Free Spirit for several years for our travel insurance and they offer great cover at a good price.

Date of experience : March 09, 2024

Easy to navigate on line.

Once got over the different ways to contact and using my computer able to buy at a reasonable rate for my holiday. Older less savvy people may need some help with such things as a QR code but managed ok. Why people can't send Letters I don't understand but then I'm an old Git.

.A surprise recommendation from a friend

I would not have found this company advertised Thanks to a friend who used it and passed his experiencebonto me. Easy to navigate the website. Comprehensive lists of benefits compared to any others. Generous benefits. No age cut off barrier.

Date of experience : February 14, 2024

Friendly, knowledgeable and comprehensive service

Very helpful agent dealing with my call. Took my health details accurately, understanding the related issues and providing explanations of complex questions when asked for. Free Spirit can provide proper cover where others can't - albeit at a price! (which is why I can only give 4 stars, rather than 5).

Date of experience : September 11, 2023

Good customer service

Got through to an advisor almost immediately over the telephone. Lady was very helpful and able to assist me in buying a policy over the phone. Good price and cover compared to other companies.

Date of experience : January 24, 2024

The price was rightt, but the website was a pain

The price was right, but the website was a pain. First two browsers I used would not let me pay. Seems like having security on the browser breaks their payment system. Would be better if a lack of secure settings stopped payment! And please use European dates on this website - transaction on 10 August, not 8 October.

Date of experience : August 09, 2023

Really easy application process

Really easy application process, price was a bit more than I expected, but still within my budget.

Date of experience : February 27, 2024

I filled in all the medical details for…my son

I filled in all the medical details for my son with the online form, and then I could not find how to pay!! So, I phoned up, the phone was answered quickly and the lady I spoke to was very pleasant and dealt with the payment efficiently.

Date of experience : January 03, 2024

Good comprehensive travel insurance for those with medical conditions

I like free spirit as they offer travel insurance for those of us with complex health conditions to travel abroad. They made my experience booking with them as straight forward as it could be at a decent price given the medical conditions etc. I feel very reassured I can now travel with more peace of mind thankyou!

Date of experience : August 21, 2023

Free Spirit = First Class

I only wish I could remember the wonderful, helpful and kind lady I spoke with who helped me navigate insurance for my disabled husband . Her empathy and understanding was so touching I felt like I was talking to an old friend. The quote was pretty brilliant too! Wouldn’t go anywhere else now .

Date of experience : October 04, 2023

It takes time to book, so be patient

The person who took my phone call started by telling me from the start, telling me that it would take between 20 to 30 minutes and asked if I was comfortable enough to go through the process.

Date of experience : January 29, 2024

Very straight forward.

As an 88 years old woman with osteoporosis and no life threatening conditions this broker is a dream. Very straight forward process. Spoke to an agent for under 20 minutes and affordable quotation for Europe.

Date of experience : December 08, 2023

All done on line.

I was able to arrange my travel insurance on line without hanging on the phone but it needed a lot of detail and some concentration. The cost seems high but was competitive with others available. I hope I won't have any claims experience!

Date of experience : October 20, 2023

Efficient service and reasonable quote.

Did this online but needed help as there was a problem with my filling in. A quick phone call promptly answered quickly sorted that out. The price was less than another quote, so all in all very impressed.

Date of experience : February 21, 2024

Easy and quite quick procedure

Easy and quite quick procedure. Clerk had lots of patience in obtaining the information required from me! Second clerk (male this time) before taking my payment, went through the cover in great detail again with a degree of genuine patience - this was much appreciated.

Free Spirit Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

As a travel insurance provider specializing in older travellers and those with pre-existing medical conditions and disabilities, Free Spirit may very well offer you cover for a trip abroad even if you have a serious health issue. They cover most conditions, and will even consider terminal conditions. One feature that really sets Free Spirit apart is the Aftercare at home feature, which provides for home help, cosmetic surgery, dental treatment, physiotherapy and UK convalescence following hospitalisation abroad.

In the case of terminal conditions, however, you shouldn't apply online but should instead call Free Spirit on 0800 170 7704 to discuss with a medical screening specialist.

Free Spirit prices are generally competitive to the rest of the market. However an insurer's competitiveness can vary from condition to condition and across other factors like geographical coverage, so we'd always recommend checking prices with a number of providers before making a purchase. You can do so by filling out one form to get quick quotes from Free Spirit and other specialist travel insurance providers.

And customers rate Free Spirit with a score of 4.7 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot , which is quite a high score for an insurance provider.

Over 65s: Free Spirit has no upper age limit, offering cover to travellers of all ages.

How to pay for your treatment: Non-emergency bills should be paid by you at the time of treatment and claimed back when you return home. You must provide an itemised receipt for any monies paid for medical treatment. If you're admitted to a medical facility, you may need to pay the policy excess locally and ask the hospital or doctor to send the rest of their bills to Free Spirit's claims department.

You may only be covered for the cost of private medical treatment in Europe and Scandinavia if you get approved in advance by Free Spirit's medical assistance service on +44 (0)203 829 6745, so be sure to have that number handy when abroad. When seeking treatment in other countries, you'll also need to call that number ASAP (e.g., on your way to hospital) as they may direct you to a preferred facility.

Gadgets: Gadgets, like mobile phones, are covered up to £1,000 on the Super plan and £1,500 on Super Duper. If you need more cover, you may need to look elsewhere and pay for a gadget cover extension (up to £3,000 available from some brands like CoverForYou ).

Cruises: While coverage extends to trips that include a cruise (not all companies do this), Free Spirit doesn't offer some of the specialist cruise cover you can find elsewhere such as missed port, cabin confinement, etc.

Bottom Line: Expect Free Spirit to provide cover for most pre-existing conditions. In most cases quotes are within market averages and will hopefully enable you to travel even if you've suffered from a serious medical condition. Adding to peace of mind, policies include the unusual feature of aftercare once you return home to the UK and also repatriation for you and a companion, should it be required for medical reasons.

How do Free Spirit Prices Compare?

Mid-market Free Spirit travel insurance prices are certainly competitive for many pre-existing conditions. When compared to Fit2Travel and GoodToGo—two other medical-specialist travel insurers—Free Spirit's prices were near average for most medical conditions. Generally speaking, Free Spirit is more expensive than Fit2Travel but cheaper than Goodtogoinsurance.com.

Of the conditions and geographies we studied, Free Spirit really stood out for good deals for those who've had a heart attack and have a stent in place and are travelling worldwide including America . In fact, our sample 65-year-old traveller with pre-existing conditions of aneurysm and stent would pay £531 to cover a 2-week trip to the US—25% less than the Fit2Travel quote and a whopping 40% less than GoodToGo. But as always, prices can vary a lot by person and even day so be sure to check your own quotes to see how they compare.

chart showing prices of Free Spirit travel insurance plans compared to competitors for Europe travel

Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to each individual's details, so please just use this following data for general educational purposes only about the travel insurance market; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation.

Free Spirit Standard Features

Free Spirit includes cover for Emergency Medical, Cancellation and Baggage on all policies, limits for which can be found below in the Policies section.

For more complete details like inner limits and exclusions, please see the policy documents .

Free Spirit Optional Extra Coverages

Free Spirit offers extra coverage beyond what is offered by traditional travel insurance. For instance, travellers can buy cover for winter sports and, separately, gadget cover to protect mobile phones and tablets when you go abroad.

Free Spirit Travel Insurance Cover Plans & Limits

Travellers can choose between two plans with Free Spirit—Super and Super Duper—depending on the level of cover you need. For instance, those with holidays worth around £5,000 would opt for the Super Duper plan, whereas those only needing £2,500 to cover non-refundable travel and accommodation expenses might find the Super plan to be sufficient.

How does Free Spirit Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?

To better understand the value of Free Spirit travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

Free Spirit Travel Insurance vs Fit2Travel Travel Insurance

Fit2Travel

Fit2Travel is another travel insurer specializing in offering cover to those with pre-existing medical conditions. Plans are typically quite economical relative to others in the market for the level of cover, but you don't get aftercare cover post hospitalization once you return home to the UK.

Bottom Line: If you want extras such as cover for aftercare (e.g., physiotherapy, cosmetic surgery, etc.) on your return home to the UK then Free Spirit might be worth any extra cost to you.

Free Spirit Travel Insurance vs goodtogoinsurance.com Travel Insurance

goodtogoinsurance.com

Another medical-specialist for those travelling with health issues, goodtogoinsurance.com offers a host of optional extras like 24/7 Virtual Doctor to speak with a UK doctor for advice whilst abroad and Gadget cover. All plans include financial failure and repatriation, plus home help and a recuperation holiday post emergency surgery abroad if you stayed in hospital for 5 days. Plus those going on a cruise can get specialist cruise cover from Good to Go.

Bottom Line: Free Spirit provides slightly more robust aftercare once you return home to the UK (e.g., physiotherapy, cosmetic surgery, etc.), but goodtogoinsurance.com stands out for the optional 24/7 Virtual Doctor and recuperation trips. If price is a priority, Free Spirit is likely to be cheaper.

All staff I spoke to were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I did get cheaper quotes but your staff were so good I went with your Company. I received the paperwork regarding the insurance details the day after accepting your terms. A very approachable and efficient Company.

Policy renewal: a very good experience

Renewing our travel insurance for all the family involved a lengthy phone call, as a year ago, but going through the various questions that had to be answered was made perfectly acceptable thanks to the helpfulness and quick understanding of the person I spoke to, Emily. Thank you.

The person I spoke to could not have been more helpful or patient helping me to complete my application particularly about personal health aspects of it. However my final judgement of any insurance company will be whether they are as courteous, understanding and helpful if I have to make a claim. The initial conversation made me optimistic that they would be.

Having used Free Spirit Travel Insurance for several years now I am always happy and pleased with the confidence the operator has when discussing your booking needs and options plus explaining your medical cover. Wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Good service

Easy to use web-site with detailed information. Friendly & efficient on the phone when we needed some help. Reasonable cost. The real test will be how they deal with any claim, should we need to make one.

Helpful person on fone- online form not seamless for me

I spoke to a very helpful person about the counties covered, who confirmed I couldn’t pay over the phone and about why I couldn’t get to payment I must have not ticked something. Could just be me I’m not very tec savvy but I had saved my form and then had to go back to edit and had to go back and forth lots of times and keep filling in my name and date of birth again (although it had saved the medical details previously entered) Happy with the cost of the cover and the insurance benefits especially as I have quite a few medical issues.

Date of experience : 26 January 2024

Hassle free travel insurance for people with medical conditions, bought online. Somehow managed to buy it without the key issue of covering my medical issues. Phoned the company the following day to correct this. The supervisor on the phone was friendly and helpful, and sorted the situation.

Date of experience : 13 February 2024

Best experience in getting holiday insurance

It was so easy to tell the call handler what I wanted and then they went through it with me answered a few questions along the way and paid for my insurance.

Date of experience : 28 February 2024

Very easy quote service to use, comprehensive policy. Could be less expensive, however, this is true of most insurances. I would recommend to friends and family.

Cancelling travel insurance because of change in plans

I had renewed my yearly travel insurance which was due to start on 8th February but since then my travel plans have been altered and it is unlikely that I will travel until the end of the year. My phone call to cancel was handled quickly and pleasantly by your representative. I look forward to resuming my insurance with yourselves in the future.

WorldTrips tops our rating of the cheapest travel insurance with two plans:

  • Atlas Journey Premier costs a little more but gives you $150,000 in travel medical insurance with primary coverage . This is a good option if health insurance for international travel is a priority.

Pros and cons

  • Atlas Journey Preferred is the cheapest of our 5-star travel insurance plans.
  • Atlas Journey Premier offers $150,000 in primary medical coverage.
  • Both plans have top-notch $1 million per person in medical evacuation coverage.

Cheapest travel insurance comparison

Travel Insured

How much does the cheapest travel insurance cost?

The cheapest travel insurance in our rating is $334. This is for a WorldTrips Atlas Journey Preferred travel insurance plan, based on the average of seven quotes for travelers of various ages to international destinations with a range of trip values.

Factors that determine travel insurance cost

There are several factors that determine the cost of travel insurance, including:

  • Age and number of travelers being insured.
  • Trip length.
  • Total trip cost.
  • The travel insurance plan you choose.
  • The travel insurance company.
  • Any add-ons, features or upgraded benefits you include in the travel insurance plan.
Expert tip: “In general, travelers can expect to pay anywhere from 4% to 10% of their total prepaid, non-refundable trip costs,” said Suzanne Morrow, CEO of InsureMyTrip.

Is buying the cheapest travel insurance a good idea?

Choosing cheaper travel insurance without paying attention to what a plan covers and excludes could leave you underinsured for your trip. Comparing travel insurance plans side-by-side can help ensure you get enough coverage to protect yourself financially in an emergency for the best price.

For example, compare these two Travelex travel insurance plans:

  • Travel Basic is cheaper but it only provides up to $15,000 for emergency medical expense coverage. You’ll also have to pay extra for coverage for children.
  • Travel Select will cost you a bit more but it covers up to $50,000 in medical expenses and includes coverage for kids aged 17 and younger traveling with you. It also offers upgrades such additional medical coverage, “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage and an adventure sports rider that may be a good fit for your trip.

Reasons to consider paying more for travel insurance

Make sure you understand what you’re giving up if you buy the cheapest travel insurance. Here are a few reasons you may consider paying a little extra for better coverage.

  • Emergency medical. The best travel medical insurance offers primary coverage for emergency medical benefits. Travel insurance with primary coverage can cost more than secondary coverage but will save you from having to file a claim with your health insurance company before filing a travel insurance claim.
  • Emergency evacuation. If you’re traveling to a remote location or planning a boat excursion on your trip, look at travel insurance with a high medical evacuation insurance limit. If you are injured while traveling, transportation to the nearest adequate medical facility could cost in the tens to hundreds of thousands. It may make sense to pay more for travel insurance with robust emergency evacuation coverage.
  • Flexibility. To maximize your trip flexibility, you might consider upgrading your travel insurance to “ cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage . This will increase the cost of your travel insurance but allow you to cancel your trip for any reason — not just those listed in your policy. The catch is that you’ll need to cancel at least 48 hours before your trip and will only be reimbursed 50% or 75% of your trip expenses, depending on the plan.
  • Upgrades. Many travel insurance plans have optional extras like car rental collision and adventure sports (which may otherwise be excluded from coverage). These will cost you extra but may give you the coverage you need.

How to find the cheapest travel insurance

The best way to find the cheapest travel insurance is to determine what you’re looking for in a travel insurance policy and compare plans that meet your needs.

“Travel insurance isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every trip is different, and every traveler has different needs, wants and concerns. This is why comparison is key,” said Morrow.

Consider the following factors when comparing cheap travel insurance plans.

  • How often you’re traveling. A single-trip policy may be the most cost-effective if you’re only going on a single trip this year. But a multi-trip travel insurance plan may be cheaper if you’re going on multiple international trips throughout the year. Annual travel insurance policies cover you for a whole year as long as each trip doesn’t exceed a certain number of days, usually 30 to 90 days.
  • Credit card has travel insurance benefits. The best credit cards offer perks and benefits, and many offer travel insurance-specific benefits. The coverage types and benefit limits can vary, and you must put the entire trip cost on the credit card to use the coverage. If your trip costs more than the coverage limit on your card, you can supplement the rest with a cheaper travel insurance plan.
  • The coverage you need. When looking for the best travel insurance option at the most affordable price, only buy extras and upgrades you really need. A basic plan may only provide up to $500 in baggage insurance, but if you only plan to take $300 worth of clothes and accessories, you don’t need to pay more for higher coverage limits.

Is cheap travel insurance worth it?

Cheap travel insurance can be worth it, as long as you understand the plan limitations and exclusions. Taking the time to read your policy, especially the fine print, well before your trip can ensure there won’t be any surprises about what’s covered once your journey begins.

“If a traveler is looking for coverage for travel delays, cancellations, interruptions, medical and baggage — a comprehensive travel insurance policy will provide the most bang for their buck,” said Morrow. But if you’re on a tight budget and are only worried about emergency medical care and evacuation coverage while traveling abroad, stand-alone options are cheaper.

Before buying travel insurance, you should also consider what your health insurance will cover.

“Most domestic health insurance plans, including Medicare, will not cover medical bills abroad,” said Morrow. Even if you’re staying stateside, you may find value in an affordable travel insurance plan with medical coverage if you have a high-deductible health plan (HDHP).

A cheap travel insurance plan is better than none at all if you end up in a situation that would have covered some or all of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses.

Methodology

Our insurance experts reviewed 1,855 coverage details and 567 rates to determine the best travel insurance . From those top-scoring travel insurance plans, we chose the most affordable for our rating of the cheapest travel insurance.

Insurers could score up to 100 points based on the following factors:

  • Cost: 40 points. We scored the average cost of each travel insurance policy for a variety of trips and traveler profiles.
  • Medical expenses: 10 points. We scored travel medical insurance by the coverage amount available. Travel insurance policies with emergency medical expense benefits of $250,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Medical evacuation: 10 points. We scored each plan’s emergency medical evacuation coverage by coverage amount. Travel insurance policies with medical evacuation expense benefits of $500,000 or more per person were given the highest score of 10 points.
  • Pre-existing medical condition exclusion waiver: 10 points. We gave full points to travel insurance policies that cover pre-existing medical conditions if certain conditions are met.
  • Missed connection: 10 points. Travel insurance plans with missed connection benefits of $1,000 per person or more received full points.
  • “Cancel for any reason” upgrade: 5 points. We gave points to travel insurance plans with optional “cancel for any reason” coverage that reimburses up to 75%.
  • Travel delay required waiting time: 5 points. We gave 5 points to travel insurance policies with travel delay benefits that kick in after a delay of 6 hours or less.
  • Cancel for work reasons: 5 points. If a travel insurance plan allows you to cancel your trip for work reasons, such as your boss requiring you to stay and work, we gave it 5 points.
  • Hurricane and severe weather: 5 points. Travel insurance plans that have a required waiting period for hurricane and weather coverage of 12 hours or less received 5 points.

Some travel insurance companies may offer plans with additional benefits or lower prices than the plans that scored the highest, so make sure to compare travel insurance quotes to see your full range of options.

Cheapest travel insurance FAQs

When buying travel insurance, cheapest is not always the best. The most affordable travel insurance plans typically offer fewer coverages with lower policy limits and few or no optional upgrades. Add up your total nonrefundable trip costs and compare travel insurance plans and available features that cover your travel expenses. This strategy can help you find the cheapest travel insurance policy that best protects you from financial loss if an unforeseen circumstance arises.

Get the coverage you need: Best travel insurance of 2024

According to our analysis, WorldTrips , Travel Insured International and Travelex offer the best cheap travel insurance. Policy coverage types and limits can vary by each travel insurance provider, so the best way to get the cheapest travel insurance plan is to compare several policies and companies to find the right fit for your budget.

A good rate for travel insurance depends on your budget and coverage needs. The most comprehensive travel insurance plan is usually not the cheapest. But cheap trip insurance may not have enough coverage or the types of coverage you want. Comparing different levels of coverage and how much they cost can help you find the best cheap insurance for travel.

The average cost of travel insurance is between 5% to 6% of your total travel expenses for one trip, according to our analysis of rates. However, you may find cheaper travel insurance if you opt for a plan with fewer benefits or lower coverage limits. How much you pay for travel insurance will also depend on the number of travelers covered, their ages, the length of the trip and any upgrades you add to your plan.

Travel insurance covers nonrefundable, prepaid trip costs — up to the policy coverage limits — when your trip is interrupted or canceled for a covered reason outlined in your plan documents. Even the cheapest travel insurance policies usually provide coverage for:

  • Medical emergencies.
  • Trip delays.
  • Trip interruption.
  • Trip cancellation.
  • Lost, stolen or damaged luggage.

However, if you’re looking to save on travel insurance, you can shop for a policy that only has travel medical insurance and does not include benefits for trip cancellation .

Even when you buy cheap travel insurance, you can often use upgrade options to customize your policy to meet your specific needs.

Some common travel insurance add-ons you may want to consider include:

  • Rental car damage coverage.
  • Medical bundle.
  • Security bundle.
  • Accidental death and dismemberment coverage.
  • Adventure sports bundle.
  • Pet bundle.
  • Wedding bundle.
  • “Cancel for work reasons” coverage.
  • “Interruption for any reason” (IFAR) coverage.
  • “Cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage .
