"Japan is one of the most captivating places on earth, where you can go from Tokyo's flashy streets to the snowy peak of Mount Fuji or a traditional ryokan in a day."

Travel Director

Admire the snow-capped Mount Fuji

See the towering peak of Mount Fuji, the tallest mountain in Japan and a UNESCO-listed site. We’ll take you up to the 5th station of Mount Fuji, a spectacular vantage point at 7,545 feet, before taking a ride on the Kachikachiyama Ropeway with views of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi.

Take a high-speed bullet train to Kyoto

Board the high-speed bullet train to Kyoto, the former capital of Japan and the ancient epicentre of Japanese culture. After whizzing through the country, you’ll meet the locals at a traditional ryokan and learn about traditional Japanese customs, then explore the Gion District and glittering Kinkakuji Temple, the symbol of Kyoto.

Experience a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony

We’ll introduce you to a professional Tea Master who has spent many years learning the craft of the tea ceremony. You’ll learn about the history of Japanese tea making, and watch how the matcha is prepared with a bamboo whisk. You’ll even have a go at making (and tasting) your own tea.

Admire Osaka from the Floating Garden Observatory

The Floating Garden Observatory is an open-air viewing platform, stretching between the two towers of the Umeda Sky Building. We’ll take you to the top of the 567-foot buildings for panoramic views over Osaka, including the city’s dazzling rivers, bridges and soaring skyscrapers.

Wander through Ameyoko Street Market

With nearly 200 shops selling everything from fresh fish and spices to clothing and bags, you can spend hours roaming through Ameyoko Street Market. Located in Tokyo along the Yamanote Line tracks, it was once a black market selling American goods and sweets after WWII, when sugar was hard to find.

Our top 5 things to do in Japan

Our Japan tours take you from the dizzying heights of Mount Fuji and the bustle of the Ameyoko Market, to the tranquility of a Japanese tea ceremony.

Tokyo National Museum

The largest and oldest museum in Japan, Tokyo National Museum holds one of the world’s best collections of art and archaeological artefacts from Asia. There are over 110,000 items, including 87 National Treasures of Japan, and you can find everything from art along the Silk Road to medieval Japanese art.

Kotokuin Temple

Located in the city of Kamakuru, the Kotokuin Temple is a Japanese Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect. It’s home to the ‘Great Buddha’ or ‘Daibutsu’, a 37-foot bronze statue of Amida Buddha, constructed in 1252. The towering statue is a National Treasure and one of the most iconic sights in Japan.

Sensoji Buddhist Temple

One of the most famous temples in Japan, the Sensoji Buddhist Temple is the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. It was originally built in 628 but was rebuilt after being destroyed in WWII. Today, you’ll find a beautiful five-storey pagoda, woven with incense and crimson eaves.

Best museums in Japan

A Japan tour package with Trafalgar takes you through the country’s top museums, from one of the world’s best collections of Asian art, to the ornate temples of Tokyo.

Although sushi is now a popular dish around the world, you’ve never really tried it until you’ve eaten the best in Japan. Our Local Specialists will help you navigate the endless varieties of this iconic dish, from raw vegetables to fresh fish wrapped in rice and seaweed.

Hida beef comes from a Japanese breed of black-haired cattle raised in the fresh air and pure water of Gifu Prefecture. Hailed as the best beef in Japan, we’ll take you to the top restaurants to try one of the beautifully tender and marbled Hida beef steaks.

A beloved dish found all over the country, ramen is a delicious Japanese noodle soup. Each region has a different variation and it usually involves a tasty pork or chicken broth, seasoned with plenty of rich flavors like miso, soy sauce and spring onions.

Best food in Japan

A Japan group tour with Trafalgar will have you indulging in the country’s fantastic cuisine, from fresh sushi to piping hot ramen.

What to pack for Japan

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

In Japan, the standard voltage is 100 V and the power plugs and sockets are of type A and B. The standard frequency is 50 / 60 Hz.

Comfortable sandals

Japanese culture requires you to take off your shoes when entering traditional restaurants, temples and ryokans. Bring a comfortable pair of sandals so you can easily slip them off all day.

Japanese phrasebook

Learning a few Japanese phrases will help you connect with the friendly Japanese locals, and offers the chance for some rewarding interactions.

Most shops and restaurants in Japan primarily accept cash, so it’s best to come prepared with some Japanese yen for your trip.

Versatile clothing

Japan’s weather ranges hot and humid to freezing cold, with mild springs in between. Pack versatile layers to be prepared for all conditions on your Japan holiday.

Customer Testimonails

I went on my trip in March 2023 and it was AMAZING. I've been planning to go to Japan for over six years and AJT was able to help me accomplish my dream. From the first time I reached out, everyone I spoke to was incredibly kind and full of knowledge. They were also very patient with my overwhelming amount of questions! The reps at the company let me know what I needed to apply for and fill out, along with due dates and timely reminders. I was also able to add on a 4-day Seoul addition with ease. Our guide, Billy, met us at the airport and was literally the most perfect tour guide. (He even assisted me with picking up my mobile wifi at the airport). I highly recommend him for your tours! He is incredibly knowledgeable about the places we were going. You could even ask him questions about places we passed and he would be able to tell you in-depth, despite it not being a part of the tour. I felt very comfortable with him and in extremely capable hands. I could go on and on about Billy, or the places we visited for days, but to sum it up, this trip, this tour is 100% worth it. AJT is incredibly thorough in helping me organize this whole trip, outside of my flights. I cannot wait to go on another tour with them! 100/10, definitely recommend!

The tour was great and well organized. The guide Billy and driver Nagato-San made all the difference. I haven’t seen a more conscientious guide than Billy. The tour gave a good flavor of different areas of Japan (I believe 19 prefectures?). We got the fully Cherry Blossom experience as well as the sites, food and culture!!! The communication was clear and concise.

I like the tour a lot especially that it was ny first time in japan. I wish all meals were included though and dotonbori included as well. Our tour guide Ms. Kim Kida was great and kind and she did her best during our tour and did above and beyond in handling some of the guests. Our tour driver Mr. Okuda was great as well and made sure our ride was safe.

Me ha ru was great at information. I learned a ton even after doing homework in advance. Japan is lovely. What needs fixed on this tour is timing (multiple over 12 hour days was insanity and even with that we lost a few items off the itinerary because people were DONE), accurate information about timing (stops were often underestimated, and our group was not particularly slow), and the included food was ... Not good (I'm not particularly a fan of japanese but why was there no ramen meal, and multiple meals involving cold rice, and food, including raw food, that was pre plated for Lord knows how long before we got there). People who already liked Japanese food were likewise unimpressed). If those things were fixed this would've been amazing, as it was it was good. Group consensus was that the imperial palace parking lot, the textile overpriced factory and the idea of going up into one of the castles could have been axed. Also, given the weather going up only to station 4 on Mt Fuji was too expensive timewise, a stop below when the mountain was out would've been preferable.

Excellent tour our guide Mr Ito was very friendly,, knowledgable and at the same time extremely responsible Hotels were all very good

You would feel an adrenaline rush once again as you navigate Japan's advanced transportation network independently. Step aboard the bullet train that takes you from Kyoto back to the bustling metropolis of Tokyo — a journey as thrilling as the destinations themselves. Your reliable guide would provide all of the necessary information to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free adventure.

Upon your arrival in Tokyo, a city brimming with an amalgamation of traditional temples and futuristic skyscrapers, make the most of your free time. Whether that would involve further exploration of the city or some well-deserved relaxation is entirely up to you. Flexibility is the essence of this day while you settle back into the Tokyo rhythm.

Immerse yourselves deeper into Tokyo, acquainting yourselves with its artistic side along with a unique athletic tradition:

  • Begin your fascinating journey at Kokyo Gaien National Garden , a lush and peaceful oasis in the heart of the city, characterized by its beautifully-manicured lawns and trees.
  • Proceed to The National Museum of Modern Art , Tokyo, where you can appreciate an impressive collection of works representing Japan's vision of modern art.
  • Take a stroll down Omotesando , renowned for its zelkova-tree-lined avenue, showcasing stunning architecture and luxury brand shops.
  • Visit the Meiji Shrine , a Shinto shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his consort. The tranquil forest that surrounds the shrine in the middle of Tokyo provides a calming retreat from the city's hustle and bustle.
  • The highlight of the day is a sumo show and experience , where you get a chance to observe sumo wrestling — a form of competitive full-contact wrestling that originated in Japan. Accompanied by a sumptuous sumo lunch, watch the sport intimately as never experienced before.

This day promises to impart you with varied layers of Tokyo — from cozy gardens and high-end shopping streets to a significant shrine and a traditional Japanese sport.

You would experience the remaining distinctive facets of Tokyo, from bustling markets and quintessential food to historic districts and modern marvels:

  • Start your day at the lively Tsukiji Outer Market . Explore numerous stalls that offer the freshest seafood, traditional Japanese ingredients, and an array of food-related goods.
  • Afterward, partake in a sushi-making experience , where you'll learn the art of sushi preparation from a master sushi chef, followed by a satisfying lunch featuring your creations.
  • Continue your journey to Asakusa , a district known for its old-world charm, where you'll visit Senso-ji , Tokyo's oldest and most renowned Buddhist temple.
  • Then, venture into the unique world of Akihabara , renowned as a global epicenter for anime, manga, and electronic goods.
  • Cap off your day by ascending Tokyo Skytree , the world's tallest freestanding broadcasting tower, where you can enjoy panoramic vistas of Tokyo's skyline.

Indulge in the myriad of experiences that Tokyo offers, catapulting you through contrasting aspects of the city from culinary adventures and historical heritage to contemporary attractions.

As your unforgettable Japanese adventure concludes, a one-way private transfer will smoothly take you from your hotel to the airport.

Ponder the extraordinary experiences and memories you've accumulated on your journey — from the vibrant urban landscapes of Tokyo and Osaka to the rich historical allure of Kyoto and Hiroshima.

Each place has shared with you its unique treasures — from visiting notable cultural sites and partaking in traditional activities to journeying through culinary delights and ascending modern structures.

You would have not only journeyed through Japan but also deeply connected with its essence.

Sayonara and safe travels!

In each accommodation, a standard adult bed will be offered to them, and a standard seat will be allocated to them in transport. From 0 to 2 years old inclusive, a "baby" rate is offered. This price corresponds to the allocation of a cot in the majority of the accommodation of the chosen circuit. However, we cannot guarantee a baby cot in each accommodation.
  • Pets are not allowed.
  • This programme is subject to change due to circumstances such as weather conditions or any other case of force majeure. Please note that due to the current circumstances, any information mentioned is subject to change or modification.

  • Paper documents (airport transfer ticket, transportation card, Japan Rail Pass voucher) and Pocket WiFi upon arrival at the airport by our airport assistant.
  • N.B.: In very rare cases, mostly in very high season, steps might be reversed. You will be informed in your mini travel-guide. Thanks for your kind understanding.

Your accommodation :

  • Some hotels may ask you to pay a tourist tax on arrival. This depends on the city and even the hotel, as some do not include it in the booking price. Normally, it is 200¥/night/person (about £1.37/1.93$) but can be slightly higher in 4* hotels. It must be paid in cash at the hotel reception. For traditional Japan Experience accommodations, it is included in the initial tour price.
  • Room size: in Japan, a densely populated country where everything is compact, 3-star luxury hotels are of very good quality but the rooms are often quite narrow (12 to 20m2/129 sq ft to 215 sq ft) depending on the hotel. Please note the size of the single room, between 10 and 16m2 (107sq ft and 172sq ft). For more comfort, you can choose our luxury 4* accommodation upgrade option. (This option is only valid for the hotel in Tokyo, not for the traditional accommodation in Kyoto).
  • Double room: Rooms for two people in western hotels have 2 single beds (twin rooms) by default, which can usually be joined together. As an option, you can select a double room instead of a twin if you prefer a double bed.
  • Single room: People travelling alone and wishing to book a single room must pay a supplement at the time of booking. The single room supplement is compulsory for orders with an odd number of participants. Please note that if you request more than two people in a single room, the single room supplement will be applied to all accommodation except for the ryokans (3 and 4*). In fact, as this is traditional accommodation, people with the same reservation are grouped together in spacious rooms for up to 5 people.
  • 3-person room: If there are 3, 5 or more of you and you do not select the single supplement, a triple room will be allocated to you.
  • In the case of a group order (> 5 people), it is possible, depending on hotel availability, that not all members of the group will be accommodated in the same hotel. Nevertheless, we aim to keep you close.
  • Names of the hotels : The names given on the site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, an establishment of equivalent standing will be scheduled. Hotels, corresponding to local standards, are given as an indication and may be changed on site for hotels of a similar category.
  • In the ryôkan , guests sleep on comfortable futons placed on the tatami mat. The room has a private sink and toilet. As is customary in Japanese ryôkan , the onsen bathroom is shared (not mixed) unless you take the "private bathroom in the room" option. OPTIONAL: Enjoy a private Japanese bathroom (traditional or modern onsen) in your room. This option is recommended for mixed couples, families, people who are modest or have visible tattoos. The 4* ryôkan (see 4* option) have comfortable futons raised on either western beds in a traditional tatami room. The bathrooms and toilets of the 4* ryôkan are private.

Your transport :

  • Flights are not included in this tour . Do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to include flights in your order: Flights in economy class with stopovers or direct flights, eco-premium or business air upgrades, provincial departures or abroad: we will be able to advise you.
  • The tour departure and end dates presented on this page relate to your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and will also leave from Tokyo. You will have to leave Europe the day before and land at 18pm at the latest to make the most of the airport services of your tour (welcome and transfer to Tokyo). The return flight is on the same day due to the time difference, with a departure time of 9am at the earliest. Please do not hesitate to consult us for any uncertainty or need for precision in the choice of international flights..
  • If the flights have been purchased by your care without the intervention of Japan Experience, it is necessary to send us by mail 1 month before your departure your flight information (flight number, airport, date and time of arrival) to allow us 'Organize your welcome and airport transfer.
  • Airport Transfers: The shared limousine bus leaves from the airport and stops either in front of your hotel or at a stop within 1-15 minutes walk from your hotel. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will drive you to the platform to pick up the airport transfer. The transfer to the hotel is unassisted. If you wish to be accompanied from the airport to your hotel reception, please choose the option "Accompanied Airport Transfer". This transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other clients leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival and stops can be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to take the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option. Please note: due to the many changes in flight schedules by the airlines, if the airline notifies you of a change in arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and if it exceeds 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport shuttle. You will then have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline for abusive schedule changes. The same applies to your return journey: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. Similarly, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement procedures with the airline company being the only solution. Japan Experience is not responsible for last minute schedule changes.
  • Included in your tour is a pre-charged transport prepayment card of ¥ 1,500 (around £10.30 / 14.54$) (suica or Pasmo brand); a transport pass for the Tokyo Shinjuku -> Hakone route and all transport in the Hakone region (excluding taxis) and a 14-day Japan Rail Pass. These 3 cards should cover a large part of your trips during the stay. Upon expiry of the 1,500¥ Transport Prepayment Card, or if the line you are travelling on is not covered by your Japan Rail Pass, any travel will be at your own expense by recharging your pre-paid transport card (at vending machines in all stations and metro stations).
  • Travel by metro and bus in the cities (payable by pre-paid transport card, included in your package)
  • Transfers from the train station to the hotels (by foot, bus, metro or taxi)
  • Travel on private train lines (other than JR)
  • Travel on Nozomi and Mizuho high-speed trains (shinkansen)
  • Trips made outside the validity period of the Japan Rail Pass
  • Japan Rail Pass: It is not necessary to possess a Japan Rail Pass which covers your entire stay. This is only cost-effective if it is used for long journeys between the different stages of your stay (especially in shinkansen) which are very expensive. In large cities like Tokyo, only about ⅓ of public transport is covered by the Japan Rail Pass and getting around is relatively cheap (Tokyo metro tickets: £1.71 / 2.42$; Kyoto daily bus card: £4.28 / 5.97$). Thus, providing you with a Japan Rail Pass for more than 14 days (21) would not be cost-effective and, on the contrary, would significantly increase the cost of your trip.
  • If a person taking part in the tour is a Japanese national and a resident of Japan, or a foreigner with tax residence in Japan (including a student), then that person is not eligible for the Japan Rail Pass. Please contact us to get the price of the tour without a Japan Rail Pass. They will have to buy the train tickets for the tour directly in Japan. The Kansai Thru Pass is also subject to the same nationality/residency requirements. This is not the case for the Hakone Free pass. If this person is a Japanese citizen but not a resident of Japan, then he/she can benefit from the Japan Rail Pass under certain conditions (see  https://www.japan-experience.com/frequently-asked-questions ).

Is it safe to travel in Japan? What about solo travellers and children?

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, ranked in the top 10 by the Global Peace Index. Therefore travelling alone is safe. Women and girls can travel alone without fear of being harassed or solicited in public places. The same goes for children, who can be seen going to school alone in the metro from the age of 7. This can give you an idea of the country's level of safety. Last but not least, Japan is a haven for children: the safety, the amusement parks, the friendly attitude of the population.

When to go to Japan?

There are 4 seasons in Japan.

Spring , from the end of February to the end of May, is a mild season suitable for all kinds of activities. It is of course the period when sakura (cherry trees) bloom, the perfect occasion to admire them (hanami). Their blooming period is between March 20 and April 10 for Tokyo and Kyoto areas, while it is possible to admire them earlier in the south of the country and later in the north. The cherry blossom period is very popular and generates a lot of crowds. However, there are other beautiful flowers that bloom during this season: plum blossoms, with their sparkling pink at the end of February; fabulous azaleas in April-May; hydrangeas of all colors or irises during June.

Summer , from June to August, is generally synonymous with heat with a rainy season in the last two weeks of June during which you can expect rain several days a week. During this very hot and humid season, it is possible to enjoy fireworks (hanabi) in July and August, as well as matsuri , traditional Japanese festivals. Among the most famous are the Gion matsuri, which is held in Kyoto in mid-July or the Obon Matsuri in mid-August.

Then comes the high wind season (taifu) , which reaches its peak between August and September, but it is not necessary to avoid going during this period. Indeed, there is little chance that they will involve changing your travel plans, few of them even reaching the main island.

Autumn , from September to November, is the season when temperatures are generally the most pleasant, quite similar to the continental European climate. It is also the season when the country is decorated with red tones and when one can admire the momiji (literally red leaves) which are usually visible in Tokyo, Kyoto and their region during the last two weeks of November.

Finally, winter, from December to February, is the coldest season but also the opportunity to admire the striking beauty of winter landscapes . December is a period of calm before the holiday season, while January is marked by a drop in temperature and the presence of a number of festivals. In central Japan, temperatures usually range from -4 to 10°C. In the mountains and the north of the country, temperatures drop significantly, while in Kyushu and Okinawa, winter tends to be milder.

The most touristic periods are :  - in February, the 10 days around the Chinese New Year, which marks a strong influx of tourists from all over Asia; - between the end of March and the beginning of April, the cherry blossom period; - between the end of April and the beginning of May, during the "Golden Week", a period with many public holidays and during which many Japanese go on vacation; - mid-August, during the Obon Matsuri; - at the end of November, the best period to observe the momiji; - early January, for the New Year, when many businesses and activities are closed.   So, if you want to go during a less crowded period, Japan Experience recommends you to go : - in February, outside the Chinese New Year period, for the cool but nevertheless pleasant weather and the splendid blooming of plum trees, before the cherry trees; - between mid-May and early June, to take advantage of the mild weather, lower traffic and the blooming of hydrangeas, azaleas and irises; - from September to early December, to take advantage of good temperatures, a reasonable level of tourism and the momiji period in late November.

After orientation with your guide, you begin your exploration of Tokyo . A dazzling metropolis characterised by soaring towers and neon, Japan’s capital is also an intriguing collection of small neighbourhoods each with their own distinct flavour. As you explore the city, you’ll also get beyond its surface to discover some of the local places where ordinary Tokyoites live and socialise.

Today you make good use of Tokyo’s efficient train system and head to the lovely neighbourhood of Fukagawa . Despite being close to the business districts of central Tokyo, Fukagawa has a laid-back and serene atmosphere, characteristic of Tokyo's traditional "shitamachi," the old heart of the city. This bayside district was historically a merchant neighborhood, and it still retains an unpretentious, down-to-earth feel. At this time of the year, the area bursts into pink air of cherry blossoms along the rivers.

While you are in the area, you will visit Kiyosumi Garden . Originally built by a local lord in Edo period, the garden was later owned by the Iwasaki family, the founder of Mitsubishi conglomerate as a place to entertain guests and employees. It is an exemplary stroll style garden with a large pond in the middle punctuated by magnificent stones transported from all over Japan.

After a full day’s exploration we head back to our hotel and a welcome dinner at a local Japanese izakaya pub .

Today you will have a unique opportunity to get out of central Tokyo to western residential suburbs. The first stop is Koganei Park, one of the largest parks in Tokyo, popular with local families and cherry blossom viewers with 1,400 cherry trees. While you are in Koganei, you will also visit Edo-Tokyo Open-Air Architectural Museum, where centuries-old building are relocated and preserved on its ground.

This afternoon you explore another aspect of Japanese culture – the Japanese tea ceremony . It is an exclusive opportunity to spend time with a Japanese tea master in her own home in a Tokyo suburb – an immersive experience specially created by Journey to the East. The tea master will take you through the history and philosophy of the tea ceremony ritual and the steps and utensils involved in preparing the ultimate bowl of frothy matcha tea. In this relaxed and welcoming environment, you can ask all the questions you like about this ancient practice and why it remains popular today.

You head back to central Tokyo and enjoy a free evening tonight. Why not try one of the thousands of restaurants in Ginza, near your hotel. Your guide will be more than happy to make suggestions.

You leave Tokyo this morning onboard a shinkansen (super-express bullet train) to visit the iconic sites of Hiroshima and Miyajima . You visit the Peace Memorial Park and the sobering but informative Peace Memorial Museum , and contemplate the devastating impact of the world’s first atomic bomb dropped in August 1945. Despite its tragic past, present-day Hiroshima remains a very welcoming and vibrant city, characterized by wide boulevards and attractive leafy parks.

In the late afternoon, you will cross to the island of Miyajima by a short train and ferry ride. You overnight on the island to enjoy the quiet after the day-trippers have gone and to capture an evocative photo of the famous torii gate at sunset. Dinner is a multi-course kaiseki banquet at a traditional ryokan – here you’ll experience the elegant beauty of a tatami mat room and traditional ryokan hospitality.

full tour of japan

Enjoy a relaxed morning and the island’s ambience. This morning your guide takes you on a tour of UNESCO-listed Itsukushima Shrine and its famous torii gate, originally constructed in 593. Mortals were not permitted to step foot on the sacred island and could only access the shrine to perform rituals by boat, hence the unusual pier-like structure of the shrine’s main building.

This afternoon, you have some free time. Perhaps hike up Mt Misen for its stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea, visit some Buddhist temples such as the intriguing Daisho-in, or simply enjoy some down time in a waterfront cafe. Why not try Miyajima's famous oysters grilled at shop fronts all over the island.

This evening you will hop back to the mainland Hiroshima, and enjoy its specialty dish okonomiyaki , a savoury pancake cooked on a hot plate right in front of you for dinner. You may also like to visit nearby Shukkei-en Garden , to admire its cherry blossoms beautifully illuminated at night.

full tour of japan

Back on the shinkansen, your next destination is Himeji and its magnificent World Heritage castle. Built in 1580, Himeji Castle is a stunning example of castle architecture, and one of the precious few original castles left in Japan. With an impressive network of defensive walls and turrets, its elegant white façade and cherry blossoms make it arguably Japan’s most photogenic castle in spring.

The vibrant city of Osaka is your next stop. Japan’s third largest city, Osaka’s history is as long as the nation’s itself, eventually becoming an important political base when one of Japan’s most powerful shoguns built a formidable new castle in the 16 th century. After arriving in Osaka, you have a typical Osaka soul food, crispy fried kushiage skewers for dinner tonight.

full tour of japan

This morning you have a cruise around inner moat of the Osaka Castle looking up its towering stone walls, a formidable barrier to any invader. The cherry blossom trees which surround the castle in spring add to its spectacular effect.

In the afternoon, you have a walking tour of Osaka’s lively entertainment district, Namba and Dotonbori including Doguyasuji, a kichen shop street, Kuromon Market for local fresh food, and Denki-gai, an electric goods street. At Dotonbori, under the famous giant signboards, you may like to try some street food, such as grilled takoyaki.

You have the evening free tonight. Osaka is very much a food-focused town and offers endless options. There’s even a local expression (“kuidaore”), which means ruining yourself financially by too much good food! Chat to your guide if you’d like some recommendations.

full tour of japan

Today you make a day-trip to Nara , Japan’s first capital. Nara was the place where Buddhism first took hold in the 6 th century, and its monumental Buddhist temples are testament to its splendid past.

Firstly, you travel deeper into the heart of Nara Prefecture and explore Yoshino , a mountain-side town famous for the 1,000 cherry blossom trees which blanket the surrounding hills in pink. You’ll head up the narrow main street to the higher levels, passing by some notable temples and shrines which once housed emperors, fugitive warlords and ascetic mountain priests.

In the afternoon, you visit UNESCO-listed Todai-ji Temple , the world’s largest existing wooden structure. This majestic structure also houses one of the largest bronze Buddha figures in the world! The awe-inspiring statue, originally cast in 752, is flanked by two exquisitely sculptured guardian figures.

Tonight, you will arrive at your next destination – Kyoto , the most iconic of cities. Originally made capital in 794, Kyoto remains the cultural heart of Japan and is home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites and a wealth of traditional craft shops, museums, galleries and outstanding restaurants.

Stretch your legs with a walk along scenic Kamo River, which runs through the city’s heart near your hotel, before enjoying a traditional Kyoto meal for dinner.

full tour of japan

This morning, you head by private vehicle to Fushimi Inari Shrine , one of Kyoto’s most popular attractions, and walk through a seemingly endless tunnel of red torii gates leading up the mountain. Originally dedicated to the gods of rice and sake, today Fushimi Inari is visited for those praying for success in business, as well as those keen to experience its magical atmosphere.

Kyoto in spring time is a joy to experience, and today you walk along the Philosopher's Path  at the foot of the Higashiyama mountains – a picturesque canal lined by an avenue of cherry trees and other flowering plants.

At the end of this afternoon, you'll see a performance of Miyako Odori, a colourful spring-time dance spectacular performed by Kyoto’s geisha community.

full tour of japan

Today is spent exploring Arashiyama and Sagano in Kyoto’s western mountains. The area is known for its natural beauty, and once attracted Kyoto’s nobility and literati, poets and Buddhist priests during the flourishing Heian period. That legacy has left behind some sublime temples, villas and landscaped gardens.

UNESCO-listed Tenryu-ji is the key attraction with its superb stroll garden which artfully utilises the mountains behind as part of its design. It’s also a popular stop for its cherry blossom trees. We visit historic Togetsu Bridge and its scenic river and stop for a traditional vegetarian lunch , typical Buddhist monk fare. Arashimaya’s bamboo forest is another popular site for its thick bamboo dappled in ethereal light. Escaping the other day-trippers, we’ll walk on through quiet backstreets to Daikakuji Temple with its beautiful lake fringed by cherry blossom trees.

After arriving back to your hotel, it is free evening tonight.

full tour of japan

It’s time to explore Japan’s mountain regions and today we journey by express trains to atmospheric Takayama in the Japanese Alps . Today you wander back in time through Takayama’s beautifully preserved streets of old timber houses – best explored on foot. We visit Takayama Jinya , once the prefectural office of the Tokugawa shogunate in feudal times, and enjoy some of the early blooming cherry trees along the town’s central canal.

Tonight’s accommodation is one of the standouts of the trip – a luxurious onsen ryokan inn in a quiet part of Takayama with an open-air onsen bath in each of the guest rooms. Relax and rejuvenate in your own private bath and understand why visiting a hot spring remains one of the top past-times of the Japanese. The multi-course cuisine dinner is also a highlight, featuring delicious Hida beef , a Takayama specialty.

full tour of japan

Start the day with an authentic Japanese-style breakfast – a filling and nutritious feast of grilled fish, miso soup, steamed rice and pickles.

Takayama is famous for the Miyagawa morning market , which is believed to have been operating for some 200 years. After viewing its crafts and farm-fresh produce, we head to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go . We visit the famous thatched-roof farmhouses with their steeply-slanted roofs built to withstand the region’s heavy snowfalls and learn about their fascinating construction.

Traversing a spectacular mountain pass, we journey on by private vehicle to lovely Matsumoto in Nagano. Surrounded by mountains, Matsumoto’s own beginnings extend back to the 8 th century, later becoming a strategically important castle town ruled by a powerful clan. Today the city is popular for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, historic quarter and stunning alpine setting.

This evening you will be treated with a local taiko (Japanese drum) performance and a chance to try beating the taiko yourself. Dinner is at one of the city’s acclaimed restaurants serving delicious Italian-fusion cuisine.

full tour of japan

This morning you visit magnificent Matsumoto Castle , Japan’s oldest wooden castle and one of the nation’s five castles designated a national treasure . Still in impeccable condition, we explore its wooden interiors and climb to the top of its distinctive black-and-white turret.

An express train trip takes you to Kawaguchiko , located in the lakes district at the foot of Mt Fuji, Japan’s tallest mountain. Kawaguchiko offers some breathtaking views of the majestic mountain and spring-time foliage. Since ancient times, Mt Fuji has been considered a sacred mountain and a place where deities are believed to reside.

Firstly, you stop for a lunch of hearty Hoto noodles , the region’s tasty specialty. You then visit beautiful Sengen Shrine , which has been a place of worship for the mountain since 745 and is marked by a beautiful red torii gate at its entrance. A stop at the Mt Fuji World Heritage Center tells us a little more about the mountain’s intriguing seismology and cultural significance.

Our ryokan  tonight offers one last chance to enjoy Japan’s sublime onsen culture. The communal open-air baths overlook the lake, offering spectacular views of Mt Fuji, weather permitting of course!

full tour of japan

This morning you take the Kachi Ropeway above Kawaguchiko’s lake to catch views of Mt Fuji. Itchiku Kubota Art Museum is a great museum to see superb examples of kimono art using the centuries-old shibori dyeing technique.

Hopefully you catch the iconic view of Mt Fuji framed by cherry blossoms, before departing for Tokyo by express coach.

Back in the capital, you gather one more time for a farewell dinner at a modern restaurant with a great view of the city. For those who don't mind a bit of singing, join our guide and the group for a lively karaoke session , ending our trip in true Japan-style!

You check out of your hotel after breakfast and your 2025 Cherry Blossom Spectacular Tour of Japan concludes.

You can take an airport express, limousine bus or chartered vehicle to one of the international airports in Tokyo. If you’d like to linger in Japan a little longer, we would be delighted to plan your personal post-tour extension to show you a different part of Japan. Please see our Model Extension Itineraries on Private Tour page for inspiration.

Note: The cost of an escorted transfer to your departure airport is not included in our Small Group Tours as we found many guests choose to stay in Japan a bit longer. However, we would be happy to arrange your transfer to your next destination or your departing airport. Please see our FAQ for more details.

I found JTTE easy to deal with and helpful in answering my questions ahead of time, and allaying my concerns. I liked their attention to detail. They helped me arrange a most enjoyable private tour after the group tour finished. The guides they use are all excellent. JTTE also know the best places to visit. Everything was so well organised.

Judith Avery

Without hesitation I would thoroughly recommend JttE to anyone considering Japan. They have near all-inclusive tours and great itineraries. To those wanting a feel for Japan I would recommend the Signature tours as you get to travel like the locals and great but not 5 star hotels.

Operated by One Life Adventures

OUR STORY: At One Life, we’ve always seen tourism as an opportunity to make a difference. We wanted to prove that tourism was more than seeing places you could have never imagined and to show people that travel could be impactful, ethical and quite literally, life changing. So that’s what we did; we put local communities, the environment and personal development at the heart of our operations and five years later, we’ve run life changing trips for thousands of travellers and are currently rated #1 worldwide. We started out in the Philippines, moved over to Sri Lanka just a year later and then launched Japan the following year. All three tours are now multi-award winning and our Japan trip was even rated #1 worldwide in 2019. We just opened two brand new tours in Indonesia and India and extended the massively popular Japan trip by another four days (we just had to make it longer!). HOW WE OPERATE: We choose to keep our group sizes small, to allow for more meaningful connections to be made between our guests and the local communities we travel through and to keep your experience as personal as possible. Immersing our guests in the local culture, while offering the opportunity to relax and reset in some of the most stunning locations the planet has to offer is what it’s all about. We’ve searched high and low to find unique activities and one off, special accommodations that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. From kendo classes in Japan with a descendent of a real samurai, to waking up on your own private beach at our beach camp in the Philippines, these are unique adventures you’ll be talking about for years. All inclusions are listed on your booking page and you’ll receive all the info you need for your travels before you even step foot in the country. No hidden costs and plenty of time to prepare. Your epic One Life group leader and our legendary local guides are there to help you have the time of your life, every step of the way. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride - we promise it’s a good one! WHY TOUR WITH US: We put our money where our mouth is and put our guests, the local communities and the environment at the very centre of what we do. Our guests have rated us so highly over the years that we’ve won multiple awards both for our life changing trips AND for the guides that run them. 2 of TourRadar's top 3 Guides of the Year in 2018 were One Life Adventures guides and all 3 of our longest running tours are rated #1 in their respective destinations. We are committed to keeping our tours environmentally friendly by keeping plastic waste to a minimum. On our tours you’ll find our suppliers providing eco-friendly alternatives where possible, our accommodation providers providing refill stations and you’ll even be able to buy our plastic free merchandise. We stock reusable water bottles, tote bags, metal straws and even washable bamboo cotton face masks. What’s more, the profits from these items go towards the community projects we set up and run in each country - from school development projects to spay/neuter programmes for stray animals! When you tour with us, you know your money is going back into the local communities you're visiting - where it's needed most. OUR COVID POLICIES: All our tours are operating under the direction of local COVID regulations, with reduced tour numbers in the majority of our destinations and all tour guides having had specific COVID training to ensure the safety of our guests and the remote communities we visit. All guides and suppliers are equipped with hand sanitiser and hand washing stations, all transport is private-only where possible and all dorm rooms are operating at a reduced capacity. Should you wish to upgrade into a solo room, this is also possible in some of our destinations. Both our policies and those of our local suppliers have been updated due to COVID and these will be strictly adhered to in order to protect everyone as much as is possible when travel resumes.

Blinken to Meet With Arab Officials in Saudi Arabia About Israel-Gaza War

The U.S. secretary of state plans to raise the issues of hostages held by Hamas, a potential cease-fire, humanitarian aid and a long-term political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken waving as he stands in the open doorway of a plane with the seal of his office on it.

By Edward Wong

Reporting from Washington

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday to speak with top Arab officials and try to figure out possible solutions for the thorniest issues of the Israel-Gaza war, including humanitarian aid, reconstruction and hostages, the State Department said on Saturday.

One of Mr. Blinken’s priorities on Monday and Tuesday will be discussing “ongoing efforts to achieve a cease-fire in Gaza that secures the release of hostages,” a department spokesman, Matthew Miller, said in a statement. He added that Mr. Blinken would underscore his belief that it is Hamas that stands in the way of a cease-fire for the Palestinian people, since the group is not budging on the hostage negotiations.

Saudi Arabia is hosting a three-day meeting of the World Economic Forum, and top Arab officials, including Mr. Blinken’s diplomatic counterparts, are attending. They include senior ministers from Qatar and Egypt, which have been the two Arab mediators in multiple rounds of talks over a potential hostage agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The forum’s website says Mr. Blinken will be in a half-hour public “conversation” starting at 12:45 p.m. on Monday, the final day of the conference.

American officials are pushing for Hamas to release about 40 of the 100 or more hostages it is holding in exchange for the liberation of many more Palestinian prisoners and a six-week cease-fire. U.S. officials say that would be the first step in securing a permanent cease-fire, and Israel supports the proposal. However, Hamas has insisted on a commitment to a permanent cease-fire, and many Arab officials, including in Saudi Arabia, have been calling for the same; those officials say that such a cease-fire should take place immediately.

Mr. Blinken and other top aides of President Biden have also been trying to push for a long-term political solution to the conflict. In their best-case scenario, they envision Saudi Arabia and perhaps a few other Arab nations agreeing to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel. In exchange, Saudi Arabia would receive advanced weapons and security guarantees, including a mutual defense treaty , from the United States, and a commitment for U.S. cooperation on a civilian nuclear program in the kingdom .

For its part, Israel would have to commit to a concrete pathway to the founding of a Palestinian nation, with specific deadlines, U.S. and Saudi officials say.

Before the war started last October, U.S. and Saudi officials were in intense discussions to reach an agreement on the terms of such a proposal. For those negotiators, a big question at the time was what Israel would agree to. Since the war began, the Americans and Saudis have publicly insisted that Israel must agree to the existence of a Palestinian state.

But Israeli leaders and ordinary citizens have become even more resistant to that idea since the Oct. 7 attacks, in which Hamas and allied gunmen killed more than 1,200 people and took about 240 people as hostages. About 100 of the hostages were released last November in a prisoner swap during a weeklong cease-fire. The Israeli military has launched attacks to eradicate Hamas from Gaza, where the health ministry says more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed.

Mr. Miller also said on Saturday that Mr. Blinken planned to discuss “continued progress on climate change mitigation and the global energy transition” at one of the World Economic Forum events. The secretary also expected to attend a meeting of ministers from nations in the Gulf Cooperation Council, a regional organization, to talk about security coordination.

An Israeli official told The New York Times on Friday that Mr. Blinken planned to visit Israel while in the region.

If Mr. Blinken does go there, the topics he is likely to discuss would no doubt be the same ones on his agenda for Riyadh, including increasing humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza, a potential political solution in the form of a multicountry megadeal and the impasse over a hostage/cease-fire agreement. He would also probably discuss Israel’s plans for a major offensive in the Rafah area of Gaza, which Mr. Biden opposes.

The details of Mr. Blinken’s scheduled trips to the Middle East often change at the last minute . As of Saturday night, the State Department has not announced any stops beyond Riyadh.

News and Analysis

The flow of aid to Gaza through border crossings has come to a near-total stop , first closed off by Israel and then further restricted, officials say, by Egypt.
