5. Do Son Beach (Bãi Tắm Đồ Sơn)

7. Hang Kenh Communal House (Đình Hàng Kênh)

Also known as Nhan Tho Communual House, Hang Kenh Communal house is not far from Du Hang pagoda. The major front hall connects to the back section through a tiled roof bridge. This site is famous for its noticeable woodwork, including the huge ironwood pillars which support the roof. Here, the pavilion also houses a lot of interesting items like fantastic dragon statues and images (with about 308 dragons of various sizes and shapes). Each year, from 16 th – 18 th of the second lunar month, festivals, ritual ceremonies, traditional performances and games like “Tuồng”, “Chèo” along with other folk songs are celebrated at this communal house, helping attract a large number of people.

Another interesting site when it comes to Hai Phong attractions is Elephant Mountain, located in An Lao district, Hai Phong city, about 20 km southwest of Hai Phong’s centre. This mountain, as its name, looks like a big elephant lying between blue sky and paddy field. It is the highest peak to the north of Kien An (Kiến An). Right at the mountain’s foot, there is Long Tien (Long Tiên), aka Water Fairy Cave, where locals worship Le Chan, a female in the army of Hai Ba Trung.

In the Elephant Mountain, there are a number of fairy caves, including Chieng (Chiêng), Ca Chep (Cá Chép), Be (Bể) and Hong Voi (Họng Voi).

Within the cave, you will find a lot of stalactites of different shapes, looking like kneeling tigers, dragons, and the head of the elephant. On the mountain, there are ruins of pagodas as well as citadels from Mac Dynasty at the16th century.

If you want to visit a historical site, then Hai Phong Museum is your choice. The most remarkable facets of this site, to me, are stone works, which are very outstanding. In general, the temple is a historical vestige monument which comprises stone elephants, stone ornate bed as well as buildings and stone horses.

11. Municipal Theatre Square And Municipal Theatre

Also called as the Great Theatre, the Municipal Theatre is conveniently situated in the centre of Hai Phong city. 15. Flower Market And Tam Bac Lake

Located close to the old colonial quarter, Tam Bac (Tam Bạc) Lake is a nice place for tourists and locals to relax and go fishing. Along the lake banks, there are trees that make your visit a comfortable, romantic and pleasant walk.

At the eastern side of this lake, you will see a beautiful flower market, also known in Vietnamese as Quan hoa, which was built around 1941 by the French. This statue is brass-cast and weighs about 19 tons – which is considered as one of the heaviest statues countrywide.

During the Vietnam War, Hai Phong is one of the cities which suffered rather strongly, but it has still well managed to keep the colonial charms as seen along Tran Hung Dao and Dien Bien Phu Streets. It is said that the first telephone line Haiphong city settled in this Office.

Hai Phong province is located in the tropical monsoon region, close to the East Sea, this place is strongly influenced by monsoons. The climate has 04 seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter). Tam Bac Lake:  The lake is located in the city center, associated with many ups and downs in the history of the locals in this port city. Hai Phong, Vietnam

Hai Phong is considered to be Vietnam’s second-largest industrial city in the North with a population of more than 2 million. It’s located on the northern coast of Vietnam and is the hub for technology, science, economy, education, medicine, and trade in this part of the country.

Known as the “City of Flame Flowers”, Hai Phong is the third-largest city in terms of urban population located on the coast. Being near to the sea, it has a good share of historical sites from its rugged past. But it’s not all sightseeing, there are numerous places that cater to nightlife as well.

Hai Phong was said to be discovered by a semi-mythical female military general named Le Chan, who was believed to be part of the Vietnamese revolution against the Chinese.

When the French took over Vietnam in 1885, they picked Hanoi as their political center and Hai Phong served as their naval base. And because Hai Phong was Northern Vietnam’s sole port, it was regularly bombed during the Vietnam War. Upon reunification in 1975, Hai Phong rose from the remnants and transformed itself to be the fast-growing city it is today.

It is a 50 km attraction east of Hai Phong. Although it is relatively far away from the center, it is one of the most frequented islands in the area. Cat Ba is often visited by local tourists in April and August but there are fewer guests around December to March.

Du Hang Pagoda

Ha Long Bay

There are numerous ways to go to Hai Phong from Hanoi. The Hanoi-Hai Phong highway is the most convenient way to travel by car. The trip time is approximately 1.5 hours.

Trains with hard and soft seats, with or without air conditioning, are available, with prices ranging from 100,000 to 130,000 VND. Tourists taking the train can send motorbikes to go around actively in Hai Phong. You can book the ticket right on Vietnam Railway’s Corp website .

By bus , Hoang Long and Anh Huy companies are good choices, with prices ranging from 120,000 to 135,000 VND. Choose Hai Phong Travel for a limousine for additional privacy and a drop-off service in the city, priced at 230,000-250,000 VND.

Taxis are ideal for families with elderly members and little children. Traveling by taxi is more convenient and comfortable, and it is not affected by the weather. • Summer is prime tourist season; if you choose to visit at this period, remember to plan ahead of time and reserve flight tickets, rail tickets, bus tickets, and hotel rooms to avoid sold out tickets.

What is hai phong most famous for.

Many of the best things to do in Hai Phong are historical and cultural in nature as it is, in many visitors’ opinion, the ‘real’ Vietnam. It reminds them of Hanoi many years back, despite the fact that it's only about 2.5 hours away by bus. Hai Phong is also known as a tourist hub and features good hydrofoil and ferry links to Ha Long Bay, Cat Ba Island and many popular islets nearby. In the past, it was an important international seaport and nowadays serves as the country’s fastest-developing industrial city.

Hai Phong has a good selection of attractions, such as Du Hang Buddhist Temple, Nghe Temple, Hang Kenh Communal House and the French-influenced Municipal Theater. There are popular casinos only some 20 km from Hai Phong. It's a well-liked resort town among domestic travelers, particularly for its unique local festivals.

What are the best things to do in Hai Phong?

Cat ba island.

Cat Ba Island is about 50 km to the east of Hai Phong and is the largest and most frequented of the 366 islands in the Lan Ha and Ha Long bays. Beaches and tropical green forests are the key attractions that draw people to Cat Ba and it has also been named by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. The island is charming, with friendly locals, fresh air, clear water, lots of seafood and many outdoor activities. Most of the islanders still lead a simple life and are in harmony with nature – they were fishermen and farmers long before tourism and industries such as shrimp farming arrived only later.

Cat Ba Island can get very crowded with domestic tourists in April and August and, for this reason, visitors might want to skip long weekends or school vacations. The island welcomes fewer travelers from December to March as the weather is quite cool and this makes bathing more challenging. But for those who enjoy nature and peace, Cat Ba is a perfect location to relax at this time of year.

Du Hang Pagoda

Du Hang Buddhist Temple was established in the 17th century under the Ly Dynasty and went through several reconstructions over the years. It features a pagoda, a bell tower, many sophisticated carvings of guardians, Buddha images, lovely gardens with an interesting bonsai collection and some important vintage objects. 

On a visit to Du Hang Pagoda, you can bring along some bread if you want to feed the turtles and fishes in a small pond within the compound.

Haiphong Opera House is a landmark conveniently located in the city centre of Hai Phong. The 2-storey building was constructed in 1904 with a French design. Nowadays, many important events are held here each year.

The opera house's interior is splendid and is able to seat 400 people. Outside the building, it is more of a modern setup, with a big square, a lovely flower garden, water fountains and twinkling lights.

Bao Dai Villa

Bao Dai Villa was the summer palace of Vietnam’s last emperor. Located on top of Vung Hill, the villa was originally built in 1928 by the French Governor-General of Indochina, who offered it to Emperor Bao Dai in 1949. The emperor frequently used the villa when he visited this part of Vietnam, especially during summer. 

Nowadays, the villa is where guests can enjoy not only the same beautiful views of Do Son Peninsula as the last emperor, but also admire the vintage royal family photos in their living quarters. One of its main attractions is Bao Dai’s throne. Don’t miss the chance to try on the regal costumes and pose for the camera as a special souvenir to bring home.

Do Son Beach

Do Son Beach is situated between the Van Uc and Lach Tray Rivers, 22 km to the southwest of Hai Phong City. It was a popular resort town for the French and influential Vietnamese during the colonial days. All 3 of Do Son’s beaches are popular for bathing, kite-flying or sunbathing, among many other beach activities. Since it is only a 2.5-hour drive from Hanoi, Do Son gets many Hanoians during weekends.

Known as the only place in the country with a casino, Do Son is equally famous for its annual festival (from late September or October), attracting travelers looking to experience the local culture during their vacation in Hanoi. It takes about 1 hour and 55 minutes to get to the beach from Hanoi by automobile.

Hang Kenh Communal House

Hang Kenh Communal House (also referred to as Nhan Tho Communal House) is a must-see landmark in Hai Phong and is located in Du Hang Kenh Ward, Le Chan District, not far from Du Hang Pagoda. The long and narrow structure was built in 1717 as a communal house of the then Kenh Village and is used as a temple. 

The house is famous for its remarkable woodwork, including huge ironwood pillars that support the roof. The pavilion also houses many interesting items such as fantastic dragon images and statues – more than 300 of them. Hang Kenh Communal House is also where many important festivals and religious ceremonies are held each year.

Hai Phong Museum

Hai Phong Museum features Gothic-style architecture and was founded around 1900. The items displayed might not be huge in terms of variety but it offers some inside knowledge about Hai Phong in general and explains the city’s role in ancient times, as well as why it is an important seaport and its role in recent wars. Due to its unusual opening hours, the museum attracts fewer visitors than most.

3rd Military Region Museum

The 3rd Military Region Museum in Hai Phong was founded in 1969, under the Political Bureau of Military Region III. At the museum, visitors will see many interesting war exhibitions (including collections of bombs and weapons) showing how the Vietnamese struggled to defend themselves against various intruders throughout history. This includes examples of their resistance against French colonialism between 1945-1954 and during the Vietnam War between 1954-1975.

Navy Museum

Hai Phong’s Navy Museum features a large ship adjacent to Rao Bridge, on the main road that links Do Son Resort to downtown Hai Phong. The museum was founded in 1975 and displays many interesting articles from the Vietnam War.

Nghe Le Chan Temple

Nghe Le Chan Temple, located not far from the Opera House, is more than just a religious site. It has strong historical symbolism as it was devoted to Le Chan, the founder of Hai Phong City. Le Chan was a female general who fought the Chinese alongside Vietnamese national heroines the Trung Sisters in AD 43. 

The temple started as a small shrine but was later rebuilt and expanded and has long been an important religious site for many local worshipers. Among the most remarkable facets of this place is the stone works – they are outstanding.

Tam Bac Lake and Flower Market

Tam Bac Lake is located not far from the old Colonial Quarter in Hai Phong and is a nice place to relax or even go fishing. The trees along the lake shores make the visit a pleasant walk. Visitors will see an interesting flower market or quán hoa on the eastern side of the lake. It was established around 1941 by the French as a small center selling fresh flowers and is made up of 5 beautiful arched-roof kiosks.

Also within easy walking distance, not far from the lake area, stands the Le Chan Woman General Statue, celebrating the founder of Hai Phong. The brass-cast statue weighs 17.2 tons – one of the heaviest statues in the country.

1. Cat Ba Island

This place is also known as the pearl of the Gulf of Tonkin, the scenery is extremely beautiful. From the mainland to Cat Ba Island, you can choose one of two ways: by bus and by speedboat. If you take a speedboat, you will enjoy the comfort of feeling each cool sea breeze. If you take a bus, you will be amazed by the scenery here. The road crosses the mountain, the spring flowers bloom in the forest, the bottom is the clear blue sea. Cat Ba has primeval forest, there are beaches that are not too big but very beautiful named: Cat Co 1, Cat Co 2, Cat Co 3.

2. Lan Ha Bay, Viet Hai Island

From Cat Ba Island, you can take a boat or motorboat across Lan Ha Bay to Viet Hai Island. Lan Ha Bay is the tail of Ha Long Bay, coming here you will surely exclaim because the scenery is so beautiful, the clear blue water can see the bottom. Through Lan Ha Bay, the boat docks to Viet Hai Island. The road to Viet Hai tourist village is winding, surrounding the mountain. In the past, this village was quite difficult, it took a whole day to go through the forest to reach. But in recent years, people have developed tourism, so Viet Hai Island has become a famous tourist destination of Hai Phong. Especially in zone 2, there is a villa that used to be the resort of King Bao Dai. Zone 3 has the Pagodon that is a small architectural work that looks like a pagoda.

4. Dau Island

Dau Island is a small island shaped like an egg, very special. This island is green, wild, and charming. To get here, you have to go by boat from the Tilt wharf. The white pebble beaches surrounding the foot of the island and the primeval forest with thousands of different species attract every visitor who has ever come here.

5. Trang Kenh

This scenic spot belongs to Thuy Nguyen District, including limestone hills, caves, and rivers. This is also one of the famous tourist attractions in Hai Phong. From U Bo Mountain, you can have a panoramic view of Trang Kenh and Bach Dang River. Around Trang Kenh, there are many beautiful caves with shimmering stalactites, typically King Cave. It is named so because there is a legend that the 18th King Hung established the palace here. The Hung King Temple is located in the middle of the cave and has a statue carved in stone.

7. Hai Phong Opera House

8. Statue of Lady Le Chan

In memory of Female General Le Chan, the people of Hai Phong City have set up a monument located at the city’s art exhibition center. This is also considered a symbol of Hai Phong City. And every year on the 8th day of the second lunar month, the people of Hai Phong organize the Nghe Temple Festival and the An Bien Communal House Festival to commemorate the merits of Female General Le Chan, who gave birth to Hai Tan Phong Thu, which is the forerunner of Hai Phong City today.

9. Tam Bac Lake

The lake was built to serve tourism and is considered the highlight of Hai Phong City. Coming to Tam Bac Lake, especially in the evening, you will see a very sparkling space.

10. Tien Lang Hot Spring

Tien Lang Hot Spring area is blessed with a source of hot mineral water that gushes up from the ground. At a depth of 850m, the hot mineral water here contains many minerals that are beneficial for health. Hai Phong Tourism

Hai Phong city, new advantage for tourists. People call this “city of phoenix flowers”. This is a major industrial city, the second largest city in the Northern. Hai Phong also is the third largest city in Vietnam.

Hai Phong city traces its origin to its 1887 founding as a seaport province by colonist of the French Colonial Empire. In 1888, the president of the French Third Republic Sadi Carnot promulgated a decree to establish Hai Phong city. From 1954 to 1975, Hai Phong served as the most important maritime city of North Vietnam, and it became one of direct-controlled municipalities of a reunified Vietnam with Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh city in 1976. In the 21st century, Hai Phong has merged as a trading gateway, modern, green industrial city of Vietnam, oriented to become the third special-class city of Vietnam in 2030 or by 2050 at the latest.
