Don't get caught by surprise: Halong bay cruise trip all explained

The 2 day cruise is not really a two-day-cruise, the 3 day trip and the transfer of boat, dining table is for share, hanoi old quarter pick up only what hotel, the beach is not really.. a beach, the cruise gets cancelled, just as i stepped on board, the best time to travel, or the worst.

Halong Bay with its natural wonder of karst landscape has attracted millions of tourists over the year. Without doubt, the easiest and most classic way to discover the Bay is on a cruise trip. However, there are things that once you arrive will seem very removed from your expectation at home. Don't get caught by surprise: a well-prepared trip most often makes a happy one.

Although most cruises will name its itinerary 2 day 1 night trip, you will be more likely to spend barely 24 hours on boat. The travel time from Hanoi to Halong Bay will already take 7-8 hours back and forth, and you will only be on the cruise from noon of the first day to noon of the second day. This is not to mention the fact that many cruises have disembarking time early at 10:00-10:30am. Knowing this in advance and you won't get disappointed when the actual trip unfurls itself.

It is a common advice/warning shared among Trip Advisor users: take a 3 day trip and you will be out for sightseeing on a basic day boat for most of the second day.

The practice is almost the norm in Halong Bay (with few exceptions of Au Co Cruise or Indochina Junk liner): guests will be transferred to a day boat for excursion and have no access to their cabin until later in the afternoon of the second day. The main junk will go back to the pier to send 2 day guests back to their bus, and collect new group of guests, before welcoming you back to their vessel.

This is something useful to know especially for family with children who need to prepare a day pack with formula and diapers in advance before heading out.

Due to limited size of the restaurant on board, most cruises will group guests into a table of 6 or 8, meaning you will share your meal and plate with some strangers. While some cruises will allow you to request private table in advance, most (mid-range and budget one specifically) do not have capacity to host 15 such couples on their junk's dining venue. If you don't mind, this would make a great opportunity to know new friends over a delicious Vietnamese plate.

The majority of cruises provided shuttle bus pick up and drop off service only in Hanoi Old Quarter area. There is even a disclaimer of service denial or extra charge if you stay outside, announced by most cruise companies. So how do you know which hotel belongs to Hanoi Old Quarter?

The good news is that most popular hotels are in Hanoi Old Quarter anyway. The easiest way to tell whether you stay at the right place is that the district of the hotel say HOAN KIEM (which Hanoi Old Quarter makes up a vast chunk). There are several hotels that do not belong to this area however, such as: Sheraton Hotel, Intercontinental West Lake, Pan Pacific, Fraser Suites, Somerset Westlake, Elegant Suites Westlake, Pullman Hotel. If you stay at one of these and wish to use the bus service you can always take a taxi to our office at 72 Hang Trong for pick up.

Although Halong Bay looks gorgeous on pictures, it may not be the best place for a beach escape. After all, the place is known for unique rocks foundation on the water, not for white sand sparkling azure water with luxury resort. There are places where swimming is allowed such as Ban Chan Beach or Titov Beach, but don't expect it to be the prime activity.

As frustrating as it can be, the cruise cancellation notice are often made on the day of the trip. Reasons for cancellation vary: a hurricane, a mist, or even strong breeze (that precedes some later heavy rain at night?) and made exclusively by Halong Bay Management. The permit to sail daily are given between 11:00am and 3:00pm, which means that you will find yourself in an awkward situation: be on the bus, mid-way and learning that the trip gets cancelled, just checking in to your cabin and learning that the trip gets cancelled. Accepting that it's part of the fickly nature of traveling and that it's for your own safety, and knowing this in advance, will probably avoid much of future stress.

There is no best time to visit Halong Bay, nor is there worst time. Pick December for calm stable weather and you will be bewildered by the crowd. Pick March for the warmth and you will be surprised with the spontaneous mist that prevents you from seeing just anything. Avoid June thinking that it may rain and you will later regret: June has beautiful sun, unbelievable cruise deals, and a much more deserted Halong Bay than the rest of the year that you will actually enjoy a lot.

15 Tips Before You Go Cruise in Halong Bay

1. is it worth it to go to halong bay.

Halong Bay is the most visited place in Vietnam and every year millions of people come here, and for a reason. The opportunity to sail on a junk ship through hundreds of dramatic limestone mountains isn’t something to be missed. There are so many  karst islands  and rocks rising from the water in every direction that it looks mystic. There are caves, secret lagoons, sea gypsies, and approximately 1,900 islands and islets that will just take your breath away. For this reason, the only way to visit Halong Bay is by boat .

The views are stunning and this place is really unique with all the limestone formations coming out of the calm turquoise water. It’s definitely a worthwhile place to visit , especially if you’re visiting at a low season time of the year. Halong Bay is one of the most fascinating places you can visit in Vietnam, and its unique limestone formations rising from the waters makes this place so magical.

I think your experience will vary tremendously based on the areas you visit , the  time of the year you go , the  number of days you have, and the  type of tour you book. This guide will help to answer all the questions you may have, so you can make the most of your Halong Bay cruise!

2. How to choose the best Halong Bay Cruise for you?

You can choose from over 500 licensed junk boats to cruise on, and there are options for every pocket. The junk boats can be very simple to super luxurious, and don’t forget the simple rule just like anything else: you get what you pay for. The higher the price, the better quality and experience you will have.

I did extensive research before I decided on which cruise to choose, and I booked the Le Journey Cruise . I made my choice by reading a lot of reviews and looking at photos of the rooms. Also, as a smaller boat with only 16 cabins, I wouldn’t have to deal with the crowds, and they are a reputable and ethical tour company.

The staff does a phenomenal job of taking care of the hosts, as they are fun and extremely helpful. Cruising at Halong Bay was certainly the highlight of my trip to Vietnam .

I chose the 3 days 2 nights overnight cruise, and it allowed me to see more of the magnificent Halong Bay.

You can choose from a 1-day cruise up to 5 days and 4 nights. I think your experience will vary tremendously based on the areas you visit and the  type of tour you book, so choose your cruise company wisely.

3. What is the difference between Halong Bay Overnight Cruise vs. a Day Cruise?

There are two different ways to explore Halong Bay – you can either head out on a day cruise or stay in the bay overnight. For the best experience, I recommend the latter as you’ll get more time to appreciate the epic scenery!

However, let’s take a look at both so you’ve got a good idea. First of all, you’ll find plenty of Halong Bay day trips on offer and they are a great option if you’re short of time. Not only that, but they’re a much more affordable way to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You’ll typically spend 10 to 12 hours cruising the bay and seeing some of the highlights. If you visit this way, you also won’t need to stay in Ha Long itself. This deluxe cruise full-day tour runs from Hanoi and visits some of the area’s most popular spots including Sung Sot Cave, Luon Cave, and Titov Island. You’ll also have a 45-minute kayaking or bamboo boat excursion included too!

If you have the time (and money) though you’ll definitely what to explore via an overnight cruise. Whether you opt for a 1, 2, or 3-night package is completely up to you, but you won’t be disappointed.

First of all overnight packages usually include all your meals, entrance fees, insurance, and shuttle transport (if needed). However, they offer so much more than that. Not only will you have more time in Halong Bay itself, but there will be a variety of awesome activities too.

The Ha Long Bay cruise I chose included a cooking class, Kayaking or a bamboo boat ride, and squid fishing (more on this below).

4. What to Expect from the Cruise Ship (or Junk Boat)?

There are plenty of cruise ships that you can choose from in Halong Bay. I opted for La Pinta Cruise as it’s a smaller boat with only 16 cabins, so I knew that I wouldn’t have to fight the crowds whilst trying to get around the ship. Not only that, but each cabin features its own private balcony!

There are four types of cabins to choose from at Le Journey Cruise ; Deluxe Ocean View, Executive Ocean View, Suite, and Premium Family Connecting. The Deluxe Ocean View and Premium Family cabins are located on the first deck whilst the Executive Ocean View and La Pinta Suites are located on the second deck.

You’ve then got the upper deck which is the perfect place to relax and admire the views. Here, you’ll find sun loungers and a bar, so you can easily grab a drink and watch the sunset. La Pinta also has an onboard restaurant which is where all your meals will be served from! You’ll benefit from a shared lounge area too where you can just kick back and chill out.

As I touched upon in the last tip, overnight cruises like La Pinta often have a variety of activities on offer. This means you’ll never be bored as there’s always something to do!

Here is a list of activities you will find while you are on a cruise ship:

  • Enjoy the stunning views from your balcony
  • Cooking Class
  • Nighttime Squid Fishing
  • Sunrise Tai Chi at the deck
  • Bamboo Boat excursion

5. What to Expect from the Cabin?

I boarded the boat around noon, and once on the junk boat in Vietnam, I was issued the room key and brought my handbag to the room. My luggage was delivered a short time later.

I really recommend you choose a cabin with a balcony. This was definitely the highlight of my 2-day overnight cruise in Halong Bay. Sit on your balcony to have an early morning coffee while you catch the incredible views. Or, watching the sunset while sipping my wine was priceless – well, it had a price..haha..but it was totally worth it!

I was in fact surprised with the size of the cabins, as it was more spacious than I expected. The cabin was very cozy, the bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom was actually huge, with a full shower and a jacuzzi with views!

6. What is the itinerary of the Halong Bay Cruise?

It depends if you choose a 1 or 2-day overnight on a Halong Bay Cruise. You can read what to do when you go on an overnight cruise in Halong Bay for more details of the itinerary. But basically, the cruises in Halong Bay follow a similar itinerary, and they offer pretty much the same activities on board.

The most popular route is visiting the floating villages, pearl farm, the Sung Sot Cave (or Surprise Cave), and Titop Island on the first day. On the second day of Halong Bay, the overnight cruises tend to visit the Luon Cave, where you will disembark the cruise, and go kayaking to visit some of the beaches in the area. But as you can imagine, these are also the most crowded areas to visit, and in some areas, the water is not as clear.

Here is a list of activities you will find that most of the Halong Bay Cruises offer:

  • Go swimming on the Halong Bay Beaches
  • Visit Halong Bay Beaches
  • Visit Halong Bay Caves
  • Visit floating fishing villages
  • Visit pearl farms

7. How Much is the Halong Bay Cruise?

As far as price goes, it was the most expensive part of my trip to Vietnam , since I paid the price for a 4-star boat with a room with a balcony during the New Year. Prices vary from $50 to $2,000 per night. But you can find something that suits your budget since there are so many options. One caveat is that you will need to book well in advance if you want to spend a night on a boat.

best-cruise-in-halong-bay.jpg

8. How to Get to Halong Bay?

Halong Bay is located in the Gulf of Tonkin, about 100 miles east of Hanoi. The transportation to and from the bay is included in your Halong Bay cruise ship package, and they will pick you up from your hotel at around 8:00 am. The ride takes approx. 4 hours and the roads are safe and very scenic.

Upon arrival at the Halong Bay pier, the main cruise companies have check-in facilities. They take your luggage and have a waiting area for departure. There are also a few options for buying food or drinks at the pier. If you want to bring some bottles on the cruise, you will need to buy them before getting to the pier.

9. When is the Best Time to go on a cruise in Halong Bay?

The peak season to visit Halong Bay tends to be between December and January. This tends to coincide with Christmas and New Year and is a popular time for holiday goers. The weather is also extremely pleasant as it’s not too hot and you won’t suffer from humidity at this time of year either.

However, during the high season, Halong can have more than 300 boats in the water. Of course with this high number of boats sharing the same location, it can be not only an environmental disaster but also, a safety concern.

The off-season in Halong Bay runs from May to September and is the best option for those on a budget. During this time, cruise companies offer huge sales on their cabins and you can sometimes save up to 40%. The area won’t be very crowded either which is always a bonus.

However, if you’re thinking of taking advantage of these low prices then avoid July and August if you can. During this time, Halong Bay can encounter sporadic hurricanes and storms and these can last between 3-4 days. If that’s the case, unfortunately, your trip may be delayed or canceled which just isn’t suitable for those on a tight timeframe.

The overall best time of the year to visit is between  September to December , since you will have a greater chance of having clear skies, and it’s not as warm as the summertime, which can be as hot as 38°C (100F). If you head to Halong Bay at this time of year, you’ll benefit from decreased humidity, plenty of sunshine, and pleasant sea breezes.

Halong Bay Junk Boat Vietnam

10. The staff at the cruise ship is awesome!

One of the main reasons I chose La Pinta was because they’re known to be an ethical and reputable tour company. This is one of the key things you’ll want to think about choosing your cruise!

The staff on La Pinta were an absolute highlight of my cruise as they were lovely and willing to do anything for you! They’re all local and have been offered training to make them not only beneficial to the cruise itself but also more employable in terms of any other future opportunities.

Not only are the staff incredible, but you know you’re doing your part by choosing a tour that works to help the local community and area. I knew this by researching the company and reading through reviews, however, that’s not always so clear-cut.

If you’re not 100% sure about whether your company is ethical or sustainable, then there’s a surefire way to know! Although eco-tourism in this area is still developing, there are a couple of organizations that you can keep an eye out for. These include:

  • Travelife Sustainability System
  • The Responsible Travel Club of Vietnam (RTC)
  • International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

If a cruise company is associated or partnered with any of these organizations then you know they’re committed to sustainable travel.

11. The food at the Halong Bay cruise ship

If you’ve been to Vietnam before or you’re currently traveling through the country then you’ll know the cuisine is mouth-watering. Luckily, you won’t have to substitute this when you opt for an overnight tour as the onboard restaurants are often incredible.

The benefit to choosing an overnight trip is that generally your breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are all included in the package. That means you won’t be subjected to any hidden or extra charges when it comes to food.

I chose the 3 days, 2 nights with Le Journey Cruise and you can take a look at the meal breakdown on their detailed itinerary. Throughout the trip, you’ll be treated to a fresh seafood lunch, traditional Vietnamese dishes, and some other favorites so you’ll never go hungry!

Although this will differ with every cruise company, there are a few things you can expect when it comes to the food onboard. Lunches are typically served buffet style so there will be plenty of dishes to choose from (including both Vietnamese and Western).

When it comes to dinner, the options will depend on which cruise company you choose. Some companies offer a set menu whereas others stick to the buffet-style setup. Select cruises will even offer a BBQ grill option which you’ll want to take advantage of!

Lastly, in terms of breakfast, you’ll often have traditional dishes on offer like Pho and Western-style options too. This can include a continental breakfast and fresh fruits, or more luxury options like smoked salmon and ham.

12. What are the other alternatives for Halong Bay?

There’s no denying that Halong Bay is beautiful and a must-visit. However, you’ll want to consider that the bay can be very overcrowded depending on the time of year you’re visiting.

For those heading here during the peak season, you’ll be sharing the area with plenty of other ships. This doesn’t exactly offer a peaceful and relaxing getaway.

If you’re looking for a less touristy area, Halong Bay is not the place to go! There are a couple of less crowded bays that I’d recommend instead:

13. What to pack when you go cruise in Halong Bay?

  • Comfortable clothes:  gym attire can be a good choice
  • Clothes for the evening: Jeans and t-shirts for men and a cute summer dress and sandals for women
  • Swimsuit and cover-up: If you will go on a kayak, swim and visit the islands
  • Rain Jacket : Depending on the time of the year, you can get rainy weather in Vietnam
  • Tennis Shoes: I recommend wearing sturdy shoes if you are planning to visit all the caves and climb up to the top of the hills in Halong Bay
  • Water bottle: It is always handy to bring your own, especially with a filter

14. Is Halong Bay Cruise safe?

During the high season, Halong can have more than 300 boats in the water. Of course with this high number of boats sharing the same location, it can be not only an environmental disaster but also, a safety concern. Unfortunately, the local government doesn’t have the proper Regulations and Safety Standards.

Due to the lack of regulations, Halong Bay suffers from environmental and safety issues. Again, that is the reason it’s so important to do your research and choose a safe Halong Bay cruise.

over-tourism on Halong Bay

T his is such a dilemma and hard question to answer – and since I went, even knowing the problem of over-tourism in Halong Bay, who am I to tell anyone to not go? It would be so wrong for me to dissuade anyone since I had a beautiful experience and memories that I will carry with me for a lifetime. But there are a few things we can do from our side:

Do your part to be an ethical traveler:

Because being a responsible traveler is the most important part of travel! Avoid using single-use plastic bottles, and straws, and help to reduce the amount of trash generated during your tour. Ethical operators will have a fully functional waste disposal system, but if you aren’t sure, keep it with you until you can directly dispose of it yourself back on land. I’m not even going to mention avoiding throwing your rubbish into the water…because you know that already.

Choose a reputable and ethical tour operator:

As always, do your research before your trip. Before I book a tour, I always try to learn as much as I can about how ethical the tours really are, and how the local tour companies care and help to protect the environment. During my research, I read good and bad things about Halong Bay tours, and after my research, I have no regrets about my choice. It may cost a little more, but you know you’re not supporting unethical businesses.

Choose to go on cruise Halong Bay during the low season:

May and June are the quieter months to visit Halong Bay, as May is the start of the wet season and northern Vietnam sees about triple the amount of rain than the previous month. The bay usually feels more open, where hours can go past without a view of another cruise ship.

My recommendations for responsible tour operators:

  • Indochina Junk – This tour operator is renowned for being a trustworthy ethical operator. They are committed to sustainability, local employment and empowerment, and minimizing their negative impact.
  • Le Journey Cruise   – This was my choice to cruise Halong Bay. They employ local people, providing the opportunity for jobs. They also use eco-friendly diesel and respect preserved areas of the bay, only allowing tourists to go on rowboats or kayaks.

Cruise in Halong Bay Conclusion

Not to mention you’ll be visiting one of the country’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites and one of the world’s New Seven Wonders of Nature.

For the best experience, you’ll want to ensure that you choose the cruise that’s right for you. To make that decision take into account the company’s itinerary, what’s included in their package, and the price of course. There are plenty of companies to choose from so you won’t have a shortage of options either!

Stunning views Paula. We did not make it to Halong Bay, but did see equally gorgeous Ninh Binh with its HUGE karsts. Plus almost zero tourists hahaha….Excellent post.

Hi Ryan, Thank you and I am glad you liked it. Next time I will visit the other places on the Bay, I heard they are great places to visit that are less touristy.

Good evening. Thanks for this info! Great article. Myanh Hoang

Vietnam is heaven for those who wants to travel on boat. Boating is quite famous in Vietnam and sailing through beautiful green mountains makes us wonder us the beauty of this wonderful places. Island boat trip of Dubrovnik is something you would like to check out as well.

Halong Bay was such a great experience and I read a lot of reviews before settling on my cruise company. They were focused on environmental concerns, recycling, and sustainable practices. I can see how Halong Bay can get out of hand quickly with over tourism. These are some great tips so that more people can continue to enjoy it too

Tips to plan your cruise

by Jessica Lee

Halong Bay is one of Vietnam’s biggest attractions and the vast majority of visitors arrive aboard day and overnight cruises.

Here’s what you need to know:

Here's what you need to know:

Swimming is only allowed at a few designated beaches, with drones surveilling the skies to make sure boat captains comply.

With these rules in place, your choice of cruise can make or break your Halong Bay experience.

Luxury cruises

Halong Bay has some cruise options that are basically luxury hotels on water, but it will follow a typical cruise itinerary.

For a luxury cruise, bank on spending around US $300–350 for a cabin. This will have higher quality meals and amenities, but overnight trips usually involve 24 hours or less on the actual boat.

Budget and midrange cruises

Most Halong Bay visitors go for midrange or budget cruises. Budget cruise prices start from US$60 per person for a day trip. Between US$110 and US$130 should get you a midrange overnight cruise.

Some ultra-budget boats are rustic at best, but there are some excellent midrange options offering cosy hotel-style cabins, knowledgeable on-board tour guides and kayaking stops.

Competition is fierce, so some operators add freebies into the itinerary, such as kayaking and private minibus transfers from Hanoi. There are a lot of options so do some pre-trip research.

Day cruises

If you’re pressed for time, do as many locals do and see Halong Bay on a day cruise from Tuan Chau Marina in Halong City.

Cruise boats can be rented by the hour (around US$30 per hour for a boat that holds up to 20 passengers) or you can join other passengers aboard a four- to six-hour cruise for about US$50 per person.

Day cruises are cheap and easily organised right on the spot in Halong City. However, they can be crowded and noisy, with only enough time for a few stops and karaoke on board.

Most decent midrange Halong Bay cruises will offer an hour or so of kayaking (some charging an extra fee).

There's also kayak-only trips. These trips are run by a handful of operators based in the nearby and lesser-visites Lan Ha Bay (off Cat Ba Island) rather than Halong Bay itself.

Full-day kayaking trips from Cat Ba Island cost between US$25 and US$30 per person. However, to see more, it’s a better idea to take a cruise that includes a kayaking stop.

In 2011, new safety regulations were brought in for Halong Bay cruise boats, but scrimping on safety does still go on with ultra-budget cruises.

Check that any kayaking stops are accompanied by a guide. Because of the surprisingly strong currents, a safety-conscious operator won’t allow kayakers to paddle off from the boat by themselves.

Booking tips

Most trips leave from Hanoi, but you can also base yourself in Halong City.

When comparing prices, check whether a transfers between Hanoi and Halong Bay are included, and if so, whether it’s one-way or round-trip, and if it uses the new expressway or not.

While the Ha Long–Hai Phong Expressway has cut travel time between Hanoi and Halong Bay to 2½ hours, a shuttle bus might take closer to three to 3½-hours.

The itinerary on a one-night cruise can be very packed. If you have the time, a two-night itinerary is much more leisurely.

One of the best times to visit Halong Bay is November – there are blue skies aplenty, temperatures are moderate and there’s a good chance of calm seas.

From May to September, tropical storms can whip up without much warning. This is also high season in Halong, particularly from June to mid-August when domestic tourism peaks.

February to April is often cool and drizzly, and the fog can make visibility low, though also adds an ethereal atmosphere.

Year-round, cruises and tourist boats sometimes need to alter their itineraries, or trips can be cancelled with little warning depending on conditions. Check the fine print for the refund procedures.

Hello there,

After doing some research, I am quite alarmed at some of the associated safety issues regarding the overnight trip to Ha Long bay.

First of all, it seems as though the transfer from Hanoi to the point of boarding in Ha Long could be quite dangerous. The transfer is in a ‘private van’ but the conditions of the roads and the accident rates have really put me off. A few people have mentioned on other posts that the drive is quite daunting. Are the conditions really that severe?

The second issue is the safety on board the vessel itself. A few people have mentioned that there is a lack of concern for safety among some operators, and the stories of boats going under leaving people trapped in cabins are terrible. To offset this risk, we have upped our budget and tried to target reputable operators. Additionally, we would specify a room with a window, preferably a balcony for ease of escape if required.

Are our fears valid or have we become absorbed by the negative stories and reviews, and should put this to one side and enjoy the trip? I appreciate that these unfortunate events can happen anywhere but if it genuinely puts us or our children at serious risk, I’d probably rather skip the tour.

I look forward to any advice.

And I also think your concerns about sinking boats are completely unfounded - yes, there have been accidents but I'd sooner be on a Halong Bay cruise boat than a ferry in Langkawi or Phuket. As for a window - many boats have portholes and if you are older than about 7 the chance of being able to squeeze out a porthole window in the unlikely event that something happens is similar to a snowflake landing on your car in Dubai

Stop paying attention to those who are peddling all this negative nonsense - and go and enjoy your holiday.

There's due care for your family and there's negative nonsense as Helen so aptly put it.

I dont know how I would explain that to the families of the 11 Aussies who went down with their junk on Halong bay. Last week two more sunk with fortunately no fatalities this time but that may have been a case of one of them was still at the dock with no passengers yet on board.

You get what you pay for when it comes to junks on Halong bay so dont scrimp there and do what we did as soon as we transferred to the junk we did our own emergency drill. We established where the life jkts were kept and how quickly we could get out of our cabins and off the boat.

Having been there I would agree with DirtyPierre. The ride is a bore and long almost 3 hours, but the van we used wasn't that bad because they are not old but fairly new. That said it is dependent on the choice you have made. I wouldn't want a boat that was big enough that they used a real bus for the ride. There are smaller nice boats that accommodate 20+ people. It is about what you want to spend. I always also recommend to at least check what your hotel has to offer for suggestions because they have the vested interest in you as you will be returning to them. They do not necessarily charge anything extra as the commission is normally on the other end.

I'd say it's fairly safe, but I would not bring really young kids to HB. I complain all the time about VN roads, but actually it was not too bad at all. I was in a luxury van for that trip. Very few boats have balconies - probably only the really pricey ones. I would say that if your main concern is safety, then you should spend more to insure increased safety.

(hint about junks - shop very carefully!)

Enjoyment of Swimming in Halong Bay: Safety Guides & Tips

Swimming in Halong Bay is something that visitors can't wait to experience. With its pristine white sand beaches and shimmering emerald waters, Halong Bay's magnificent splendor is hard to resist. If you’re on vacation with Halong Bay Cruises and you’re a huge fan of swimming, let’s take a look at the detailed information and travel guidelines for this exciting activity.

halong bay cruise safety

I. Why is Halong Bay an ideal destination for swimming?

Apart from breathtaking limestone islands, Halong Bay , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well-known for its crystal-clear green water and a variety of stunning beaches, which makes it the perfect place for swimming and sunbathing in Vietnam .

Thanks to its sheltered position, Halong Bay's water surface is generally calm and clean, except for a two-month stormy summer season. While soaking in the green waters, you can take in splendid panoramic views of green limestone islands and white cruise ships, which contribute to the tranquil ambiance of the bay.

halong bay cruise safety

In addition to swimming on soft white sand beaches, you may take a refreshing plunge in the middle of Halong Bay by jumping from the boat into the cool water. This exhilarating activity will help you let go of all your stress, escape the bustling life for a little while, and connect with nature deeply.

II. Is it safe to swim in Halong Bay?

Definitely yes, as long as you swim in the right places and follow all the cruise’s safety rules and instructions. Not everywhere can you swim in Halong Bay, but some spots are announced by the bay’s management board.

halong bay cruise safety

Adventurers can jump directly from the cruise into the bay, as the depth ranges from 15 to 29 meters, and the feeling of rushing into the fresh water and floating in the midst of nature is absolutely thrilling and exciting. However, make sure you are an excellent swimmer and prepare carefully before taking any jumps.

III. Best places to go swimming in Halong Bay

As an artwork of nature, Halong Bay offers picturesque beaches with white sand, an emerald sea, and gentle waves that provide a fantastic setting for tourists to enjoy plenty of water activities. Below are some of the best spots for swimming in Halong Bay.

1. Titov Island

In Halong Bay, Titov Island is unquestionably one of the greatest swimming locations. The island has a serene and beautiful crescent-shaped sandy beach and clean water for a refreshing swim. This offshore beach is nestled at the foot of an imposing mountain, making it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and resting as it is less busy than the inland beaches. Titop Island also offers various fascinating activities, such as mountain hiking, sightseeing, and kayaking. So, if you're searching for a lovely spot to swim in Halong Bay, Titop Island should be at the top of your list.

2. Ba Trai Dao Beach

Located on an eponymous islet with three small hills, Ba Trai Dao Beach is famous for its clear and clean water. Compared to other beaches in the region, the water here is shallower. The beach is also quite secluded because it is surrounded by rocky islands. Coming here, you will feel truly peaceful and relaxed while dipping in the cool water.

3. Tra Bau/Ao Ech Area

If you travel with Lan Ha Bay Cruises , you can swim freely around where your cruise anchors, but most cruises will choose the Tra Bau and Ao Ech areas as their swimming points. The whole area is an untouched watersacpe, far from the shore and surrounded by towering rocky mountains, creating a perfect place for relaxing, sightseeing, kayaking, and especially swimming.

4. Cap La Beach

Cap La Beach is a wonderful white sand stretch nestled in a small, lush eponymous island with a peaceful waterscape of Bai Tu Long Bay . Not many cruise lines operate in this area, so it remains unspoilt with wild features, and sometimes there’s only your group enjoying the enchanting beach and turquoise waters. Cap La Beach is among the best spots to go kayaking and swimming.

IV. Best time to experience swimming in Halong Bay

The summer months of April through October , when the weather is pleasant and the water is calm, are the ideal times to go swimming in Halong Bay. The water is usually between 25°C and 30°C (77°F and 86°F) at this time of year, which makes it perfect for swimming and other water sports.

halong bay cruise safety

Travelers should visit Halong Bay in the shoulder seasons from April to May and September to October if they would like to stay away from the crowds. You can delightfully take in the bay's natural beauty in a more tranquil environment during these months because there are fewer visitors and the weather is warm with still water.

V. Best cruise options for swimming in Halong Bay

All Halong Bay cruises , from budget to mid-range or luxury , will include swimming as a part of their sailing activities, along with kayaking and caving. Nevertheless, each vessel will have a distinct cruising program with different attractions. If you’re keen on swimming and other water activities, you can consider the following top choices:

- To avoid injuries, warm up for at least five minutes before getting in the water.

- Avoid heavy meals and alcohol. Eating a large meal or drinking alcohol right before swimming might throw off your balance and coordination.

While swimming:

- Always swim in groups or ask a cruise staff member to watch you.

- Avoid swimming in areas where the currents are unknown to be strong or too far from your ship.

- Don’t swim in the early morning, at noon, or late at night, when the currents might be stronger.

- If you see big waves, dive as deep as you can beneath them and then wait for a break before swimming back to shore or ship.

- Be aware of jellyfish, which can cause discomfort and itching.

- Set a time limit of 15-20 minutes for swimming to avoid getting too cold.

- Keep an eye on kids. If kids are swimming, make sure their parents are watching them at all times.

In this article, we will recommend useful safety tips for Cruising in Halong Bay such as yatch, sailboats and cruises in the most reasonable way and the best conditions. Cruising in Halong Bay would be undoubtedly a wonderful experience in your life, so don’t let any unexpected accidents spoil your cruise by following instructions of safety tips for cruising in Halong Bay :

• Weather is one of the most important factors to consider when you decide to go on a cruise. It would be nice if you visit the bay in a sunny day. However, if it is in stormy season, you can check the weather forecast to be sure and ask for more information before departing. The wharf management will tell you whether you can go sailing or not depend on the weather. • To ensure your safety on the ship, the very first thing that reliable crew members would do is giving you a tour around to show you where to get a life jacket and how to escape in emergency situation. Please pay attention to the instruction in case of emergency. • Before getting on the cruise, please put your valuable items like necklace, ring, assessories somewhere safe so you feel comfortable during your trip. • You never want unexpected incidents but it is necessary to know how to deal with some emergency situations. If a person is wounded or swooned, please make first aids quickly and call other boats near yours. In case somebody falls into the sea, throw the life bouys for him/ her quickly and call aloud so that crew members can rescue him/her fast. • On the ships, especially luxury cruise ships, the staff will offer you high quality wine. Please do not drink too much because it may affect your judgement and cause unexpected incidents. • When the wind and the waves are excessively strong, you can ask the captain to steer the boat to a safe position on an island and anchor it. • If the boat has the signs of breakdown or sinking, please don’t be panic. What you need to do is following crew members’ instruction and taking the life bouys quickly. In this case, please give priority to elderly people and children. It is suggested to jump into the sea only when there are no crews around. • You may find the bay attracting, but it can be not safe to take a bath spontaneously. Therefore, you should ask the chief of the boat, he can show you where is safe and allowed • Besides, you should wear comfortable shoes so you can walk easily. When it is raining heavily, you should not stay on the decks. And it could be nice if you bring your hat, raincoat with you. • Although it is interesting to cruise alone, it is advisable to have a group of 3 or 5 members to take care of each other.
