Winter festivals can be particularly fun if you go to the right ones. Cruise festivals, which are unique to the winter festival season, are among those. Since we don't have Holy Ship! to look forward to anymore (RIP), other festivals like Groove Cruise have popped up to take its place. Groove Cruise is by far the biggest cruise festival going on right now, and with a killer 2022 lineup it's the perfect way to escape the winter for a fun, late-January trip. Here's everything u need to know about Groove Cruise:

The Basics:

There are three iterations of the Groove Cruise event, but if you're looking for a rave boat you'll want Groove Cruise Orlando, which kicks off in January 2024, but you can also start booking your 2025 trip at the event website here . 

Rates for the cruise range, but are pretty affordable. The 2022 cruise ranged from $850 to $1200 depending on what kind of cabin and amenities you wanted. You could pick from a standard cabin, or upgrade to a larger cabin or additional food and drink options for a few hundred more.

The Destination:

Part of the experience of Groove Cruise is raving at sea, but you will get to dock in the Grand Bahamas at Private Cove. The destination is a picturesque tropical island beach with activities like zip lining and snorkeling available. It's a great way to get some traveling done this year while going to a rave with your besties.

Do I need a passport?

Groove Cruise departs from Orlando but travels to The Bahamas, meaning you will need a passport and possibly a visa depending on what country your passport is issued from. Keep in mind that you may also need to have a negative COVID-19 test depending on the local laws of the Bahamas. Keep up to date on the latest travel advisories for the Bahamas here.

The best part of Groove Cruise by far is the lineup. With headliners like Claude Vonstroke, Clozee, Gorgon City and Walker & Royce and Haliene, SQXO, Wreckno and J. Worra also on the lineup it's going to be a rager.

Groove Cruise to celebrate milestone 20th anniversary with Miami 2024 sailing

GRAMMY award-winning producer  Tiësto  will make his inaugural  Groove Cruise  appearance on the 2024 sailing. One of the most influential dance music acts of this generation,  Tiesto  was the first artist ever to win  DJ Mag’s #1 DJ  for three consecutive years in a row in 2002-2004, and has since amassed billions of streams across platforms while performing around the globe. Making his long-awaited  Groove Cruise  debut,  Tiësto  is slated to headline the private beach party in  Great Stirrup Cay .

Adding another legendary dance music icon to the #GCFAM,  Diplo  will also make his first-ever  Groove Cruise  performance on the 2024 edition, hosting a highly-coveted takeover from his Higher Ground imprint. The three-time GRAMMY award-winning producer has had quite a career with his various collaborative projects like  Major Lazer ,  Jack Ū ,  LSD ,  Silk City , and more. He launched his underground-focused label  Higher Ground  in 2019 to pay tribute to his house music roots, and has since curated various label showcases across the globe. The  Diplo-hosted   Higher Ground  takeover on  Groove Cruise  will feature a range of underground acts and promises to be one of the highlights of the weekend.

Following his unforgettable  Groove Cruise  debut aboard the Orlando 2022 sailing, global party-starter  John Summit  will make his  Groove Cruise Miami  debut as a headliner of the 2024 installment. The Beatport chart-shredder will once again deliver an electrifying performance, in addition to hosting  Groove Cruise ’s first-ever  Off The Grid   takeover. Tapping label favorites that are famed for igniting dance floors,  John Summit’s Off The Grid  takeover will be a high-octane marathon of rip-roaring beats.

In addition to the star-studded trio of headliners,  Groove Cruise  will welcome an impressive medley of genre-crossing acts to make their festival debuts. Transporting the sounds of the underground,  Groove Cruise  will welcome UK tech-house favorite  Biscits , fast-rising techno act  Brennen Grey , trance purveyor  Craig Connelly , international techno queen  Lilly Palmer , London house music ace  Deeper Purpose , London-based  Joshwa , Croatian born  San Pacho , prolific duo  Pig&Dan , and house music icon  VNSSA .  Mija  and  GG Magree  will also make their  Groove Cruise  debut with collaborative  So Tuff So Cute .

Groove Cruise  will also welcome back some fan-favorite veteran acts to celebrate the 20th anniversary. Longtime  Groove Cruise  veterans  Gene Farris  and  Markus Schulz  will once again return to bring their own unique blends of electronic music. Known as “The World’s Largest Premier Floating Dance Music Fest,” Groove Cruise is not your typical music festival. Debuting in Miami in 2005, it is an immersive experience that has been rocking the high seas through three different decades now.

Groove takes place on a cruise ship, sailing from both the East and West coasts – the only experience to do so – over the course of four days. We’re talking about non-stop parties, beaches, and pools. This floating music festival is the largest of its kind, boasting 24/7 electronic dance music, along with artist activities and onboard events that rival the best festivals in the world. Plus, with the Whet Oasis Zen Experience and exotic destinations, you’ll embark on a journey that’s anything but ordinary. Groove Cruise is produced by Whet Travel, and it’s much more than just a cruiser; it’s a way of life.

How much does a cruise cost?

Budgeting for a cruise can be complicated. The advertised cruise fare is really only the starting point, to which you must add port fees and taxes (which vary by individual port), gratuities for the crew, port parking if you drive to the port, airfare and airport parking if you fly, and transfers to and from either the airport or a hotel (yet another additional cost).

After you add those up, you can begin to add onboard extras like specialty drinks or drink packages, Wi-Fi and food options that aren't included in the cruise fare. And then there's the cost of port activities to consider. Add it all up, and you might be amazed at how much your total travel costs have skyrocketed from the base cruise fare.

To demonstrate how much a cruise really costs, I'm going to break things down so you can add up the costs that you would likely incur. Because cruise costs vary widely, I'll use real examples from my recent seven-night cruise on Celebrity Cruises to the Mexican Riviera , coupled with averages.

How much is a typical cruise fare?

Cruise fares can be as cheap as $179 for a four-night Carnival cruise or as expensive as $11,000 per night for the top Regent Suite on Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ships.

On the low end, fares for the cheapest inside cruise cabins average between $50 and $75 per person, per night. Anything you can find below those prices is a major steal; popular sailings will likely be more expensive.

Cabins with a window will cost a bit more, and a balcony room will be almost double the cost of an inside room. Averages across the major cruise lines for balcony cabins fall between $100 and $150 per night most of the year. Suites and rooms on upscale or luxury cruise lines cost considerably more, but you get more for your money.

All cruise lines provide basics like transportation, accommodation, food at select restaurants for all meals, and a selection of entertainment and activities in the fare.

My Celebrity cruise cost $2,700 for two people in an AquaClass Sunset Verandah cabin. That breaks down to $193 per person, per night. It was a rear-facing balcony cabin, which is typically a higher price. AquaClass includes unlimited access to the ship's thermal suite, two bottles of water supplied daily in the cabin, afternoon canapes and access to Blu, an exclusive dining room with a spa-oriented menu for breakfast and dinner.

What extra costs might I incur?

Cruise fares for extra guests.

In most cases, unless there is a special at the time you book your cruise, you will pay extra for having any number of guests in a cabin other than two. Third and fourth guests (or more if you book a large suite) pay a fare that is lower than the fare for the first two guests. Some lines run specials offering free or $99 third- and fourth-person fares from time to time.

Solo travelers usually pay a single supplement to make up for the lack of double occupancy in the room. The supplement can be equal to the cost of a second guest, but some lines offer deals for much less or have single cabins that do not include a supplement.

Port fees and taxes

Extra fees and taxes are part of your final cruise fare, but they usually aren't included in the first price shown when you are cruise shopping. (They might be there, but in fine print). The amounts are based on the specific ports you will visit. The more ports your cruise visits and the longer it stays in port, the more you will be charged.

Some regions (like Alaska) tend to have higher port fees than others. Fees are also higher on larger ships because the cruise line is charged docking space based on size. Fees are lowest when ships tender rather than dock.

Here are average taxes and fees for large ships on seven-night cruises, based on the destination:

• The Bahamas, Caribbean and Mexico : $140 to $200 per person
• Europe: $50 to $100
• Alaska: $250 to $350 (but can be higher)

Taxes, fees and port charges on my Celebrity cruise totaled $186.45 per person. The ship called at Catalina Island, Cabo San Lucas and San Diego.

For comparison, my most recent Alaska cruise was a five-night sailing with only two ports of call. The taxes, fees and port charges totaled a whopping $373.64 per person. I recently booked a 15-night transatlantic sailing between Rome and Tampa, with four stops — three in Europe and one in the Bahamas. My bill shows taxes, fees and port expenses of only $139.65 per person.

Crew gratuities

Most cruise lines give you the opportunity to pay crew tips at the time of booking. If you choose not to pay in advance, the auto-gratuity will be added daily to your onboard bill.

The current average for standardized tips is between $15 and $20 per person, per night, depending on the cruise line and the type of cabin you book.

Gratuities on my Mexican Riviera cruise on Celebrity were $17.50 per night, for a total of $245 for two people.

Trip insurance

You can argue the pros and cons of insuring your cruise, but my basic advice is to insure it.

There simply are too many variables when it comes to cruising to leave it all up to chance. The medical coverage outside the country alone is reason enough to include this in your cruise budget.

I bought a cruise travel insurance policy for my Celebrity cruise through Squaremouth. The total cost for two people was $231.18. It was cheaper than what the cruise line offered and provided better coverage.

Travel costs

Obviously, you'll need to pay extra to travel to your port of embarkation, whether that's airfare, a ride-hailing service or parking and gas. Don't forget to budget for transfers between the airport, hotel and ship if you're not driving to the port and parking there.

On my Celebrity cruise, extra transportation costs included ride-hailing service from the airport to a pre-cruise hotel, from the hotel to the port and from the port to the airport at the end of the cruise. The transportation total was $155.71.

The hotel itself was booked using Wyndham Rewards Points, but you should budget for lodging if you book a pre- or post-cruise stay.

Food on board and in port

All cruise lines include meals at several onboard restaurants in their cruise fares, but most also give passengers plenty of ways to spend money on dining and snacks.

The most common dining expenses are for eating at specialty restaurants . These either charge a per-person fee to dine or price menu items a la carte. Dining at these restaurants is voluntary, but it's easy to get tempted, especially on longer itineraries.

Specialty restaurant charges start as low as $18 per person (select restaurants on Carnival ships) and climb beyond the $200 mark (such as the New York Supper Club on Royal Caribbean 's new Icon of the Seas at $200 per person and the Collection dining option in Enchante on Disney Wish at $205).

Other extra food charges can be as simple as a fee for special menu items when dining in a complementary venue. For example, lobster in the main dining room on Celebrity ships will cost you $16.99, while a gigantic 40-ounce, bone-in tomahawk ribeye at Windstar Cruises ' Candles (a complimentary specialty eatery) will cost $50.

You might also spend money on extra-fee gelato, ice cream sundaes, fancy snacks or baked goods at onboard coffee shops.

Room service is also not free on many cruise lines. The room service menu in your cabin or in the ship's app will state delivery fees and/or a la carte prices. Examples include $9.95 per delivery on Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian Cruise Line ships ; Royal Caribbean and Celebrity offer continental breakfast for free. Other lines skip the room service fee but charge a la carte for specialty items like breakfast smoothies or steak and eggs ($15, Holland America ). Snacks in the in-room fridge/minibar incur a charge on most cruise lines.

One last thing that people spend money on is food in port. Some excursions include meals, but if not, add a bit to your budget for a few treats — either food or drink. It's a nice way to experience the culture of the destinations you cruise to. How can you visit Italy without grabbing a slice of pizza?

On my Celebrity cruise, I booked a cabin category that included breakfast and dinner in an exclusive specialty restaurant, so I did not pay for any food upcharges onboard. I did, however, buy a cookie in port on Catalina Island, so I spent $5 on extra food.

By contrast, on a recent Royal Caribbean cruise, we opted to dine at two specialty restaurants. Both were spur-of-the-moment decisions because we didn't see anything on the main dining room menu that sparked our interest. Most specialty restaurants can be booked pre-cruise for a slight discount. Our total for the two meals, with wine and gratuities, was $249.36. Fixed-price specialty restaurants typically include everything but alcoholic drinks.

Nonalcoholic drinks like drip coffee, hot and iced tea, some sort of punch, juice, lemonade, milk (at mealtimes) and tap water will be included no matter which cruise line you choose. All other beverages will cost extra.

Soda costs extra on all big-ship cruise lines except Disney Cruise Line and will run you $4.50 to $6 when ordered individually. If you're addicted to Diet Coke or other soft drinks, budget for a soda package, which gets you unlimited consumption for a flat daily rate.

For example, Royal Caribbean's soda package is currently $12.99 per person, per day but can fluctuate during peak travel times. Carnival's is $9.50 per day for adults. It may only take a few sodas per day to make the package cost-effective.

Bottled water (on lines that don't include it) typically costs $3-$5 when purchased individually or as low as $9.95 for a case of twelve bottles delivered to your cabin (Carnival). The bottle of water left out in your cabin is likely not free unless you receive free water as a perk for being a member of the cruise line's loyalty program or are in a cabin class that includes it.

Unless your cruise fare specifically states there are alcoholic beverages included, you'll pay extra for beer, wine, cocktails and spirits in any venue onboard. You have the option to either purchase drinks as you go or buy a package. Beer prices are $7-$10 on most ships. Wine by the glass can be as low as $9 or as high as $25. Cocktails average between $10 and $17 on most ships but can be higher for specialty drinks or with premium call liquors. Wine by the bottle (which you can take to your cabin or finish at subsequent meals) starts around $25 and climbs steeply from there.

Most lines offer drink packages that cover alcoholic beverages up to a set amount per drink. Package prices can vary dramatically, depending on the itinerary and sailing dates. Expect to pay around $100 per person per day for a full cruise package, including tips. Carnival's Cheers package will be a bit lower, and Norwegian's Premium Plus Beverage Package is higher.

Lines that include some alcoholic drinks in the cruise fare usually offer a package to upgrade to premium drinks, which may have a broader choice of drinks or venues where they are available. An example of that is on Viking cruises , where the fare includes house beer, wine and sodas during lunch and dinner. If you want drinks other than at meals or that include call liquors, you can purchase a package for $25 per person, per night for the wider selection available at any bar at any time they are open.

An additional beverage cost to keep in mind is corkage fees for bottles of wine you bring onboard (within the cruise line's limits). The fees run between $10 and $25 per bottle. On most ships, the fee is only charged if you take the bottle to the dining room or a bar to be opened and served there. NCL charges the corkage fee at embarkation, regardless of where you plan to consume the wine.

Other extras include smoothies and fresh-squeezed juices (often available at breakfast, either in the buffet or at eateries near the spa or solarium.) Costs for these can average nearly $10 on some lines but may be included in some beverage packages.

I carry my own water bottle that I fill at the drink stations, plus we had two bottles delivered each day in AquaClass, so I didn't pay for any water on my Celebrity cruise. Also, because of our cabin class, smoothies were served daily at no charge in the exclusive Blu dining room.

I'm a happy tea drinker, so I don't spend extra on specialty coffees or sodas. Celebrity allows you to bring two bottles of wine onboard per cabin. We drank those in our cabin to avoid the corkage fee (you can ask your cabin attendant for a bottle opener and two glasses). Celebrity offers free drinks in the casino while gambling, so my extra drink cost was zero.

Entertainment and attractions

While most onboard entertainment is free, you can expect to pay extra for a handful of over-the-top activities. Carnival Cruise Line's rollercoaster , Norwegian Cruise Line's go-karts and Royal Caribbean's iFly skydiving experience are examples of extra-fee activities.

Also, expect to pay extra for video games, bingo, casino gambling, fitness classes and spa and salon treatments and services.

Spa, fitness and salon

You can easily run up a bill in the spa on most ships. Most mainstream cruise lines charge extra for access to their thermal suites, which include heated loungers, saunas, steam rooms, mood showers and sometimes pools or hot tubs not accessible to the public. Daypasses start at $30 per person (Carnival) to more than $40. Full-cruise passes are often available.

Services like massages, scrubs and wraps can soar well into the $200 per treatment range, and medi-spa offerings like acupuncture or teeth whitening are even more. Use of fitness equipment is complimentary, but classes or private time with a trainer will add to your bill.

Salon charges are likely to be higher than most of us pay at home, but a little cruise pampering never hurt anyone.

On my Celebrity cruise, our AquaClass stateroom granted us access to the thermal suite — one more bonus of choosing that room class. Spa staterooms are available on several other cruise lines, including Carnival and Holland America. I did not partake in any other spa or salon services on my Celebrity cruise, but for comparison, on a recent Windstar sailing, I had a Fire and Ice mani-pedi. The cost was $159 plus tip and included a delightful hand and foot massage.

Shore excursions and tours in port

Shore excursions are an extra charge on most cruises, though upscale, luxury and most river cruises include a selection of both complimentary excursions and extra-fee excursions. Pricing varies widely based on type of tour, duration and age of participant. You can book through the cruise line or arrange your own tour or excursion independently.

In most destinations, you can easily spend $100 or more per person for an excursion. Excursions in Alaska are considerably pricier than in the Caribbean. Activities involving airplanes or helicopters cost more, as do private tours arranged exclusively for your group. (Splitting a private tour with newfound cruise friends with similar interests can be a great way to save.)

Also watch out for destinations where the ship docks some distance from the city you are expecting to see. This happens frequently in Europe — Rome, Athens and Venice, for example. Some cruise lines will supply complimentary transfers between the port and the primary destination city, but others expect you to either find your own way or pay for an excursion to the destination city.

Here's my shore excursion tally from my Celebrity cruise:

• Whale Watch Cabo (booked independently): $180 for two people with a tip
• 5-hour private Jeep tour of the island with Catalina Taxi and Tours, including a stop at the island's famous Airport in the Sky for spectacular island views: $875 for two people (this was comped for us by Love Catalina)

In total, I would have paid $1,055 for excursions (including the Catalina tour that I did not have to pay for), which is a modest budget for two people on a seven-night cruise. For example, on previous cruises in the Caribbean, I have spent over $400 per port for two people for activities like scuba diving, snorkeling or zip lining.

Onboard Wi-Fi is generally included in the cruise fare only on luxury lines and is offered in a variety of packages on all other lines. Be prepared for sticker shock: Onboard Internet packages, with or without streaming access, are expensive compared to what you pay for home Wi-Fi.

Premium Wi-Fi is a must for me. The cost during my cruise was $35 per device, per day. The cruise line provided it at no charge, but the total would have been $490.

Cruise ships will do your laundry for you — for an extra fee, of course. You'll find a laundry/dry cleaning bag in your closet or in a drawer. Charges for cruise ship laundry services range from $6 per piece for washing and ironing shirts to $15 for a dress. Some cruise lines have a fill-the-bag special that allows you to stuff a laundry bag with as much as you can and pay a single price, often around $35.

You might be entitled to free laundry services if you're staying in a specific type of suite or have reached a certain status of the cruise line's loyalty program.

During my Mexican Riviera cruise, I took advantage of a status offer on Celebrity and had them launder a full bag at no charge.

How much does it cost to go on a cruise?

For my seven-night Mexican Riviera cruise in an Aqua Class Sunset Verandah cabin on Celebrity Solstice, here's my total for two people (including charges that were comped):

• Cruise fare : $2,700
• Port taxes: $372.90
• Standard gratuities: $245
• Trip insurance: $231.18
• Extra transportation: $155.71
• Shore excursions: $1,055
• Wi-Fi: $490

Add all those expenses up, and the grand total was $5,254.79.

The thing that jumps out at me is that the total cost is almost twice the cruise fare. And that's without any airfare. I ran the numbers on several other cruises by shopping online and found that to be true in most cases. The exceptions are cruises with lots of inclusions. Those mostly fall into the upscale and luxury categories.

You can find ways to lower the cruise fare itself — as I did by earning a comped cabin through gambling on a prior cruise — or by booking a cheaper cabin category. Places in the budget where you can skimp a little include extra food and beverages and shore excursions (especially if you've previously visited the ports or can walk around town independently). You can also utilize credit card points and airline miles for some of your costs.

The bottom line, though, is that in most cases, your total cruise vacation will cost considerably more than the cruise fare alone.

Cruise Cost Calculator: See How Much Your Trip Will Cost

One of the big draws with cruising? It can be an affordable vacation that allows you to travel to distant ports, eat world-class food, and enjoy loads of entertainment for drastically less than you’d pay if you booked all these items separately.

But truth be told, the costs of cruising can add up quickly. Between getting to the port to excursions to the actual cruise itself, the costs can add up, making budgeting more difficult.

To help you out, we’ve created a cruise cost calculator. The calculator below offers a chance to estimate your expenses for your trip, with all the major spending areas you’ll find a cruise. Simply input details about your trip and see how much you should budget for your trip.

Estimating Cruise Expenses

Transportation to the Port You can’t start your trip without getting to the ship first. Transportation amounts vary depending on where you are coming from and which port you are sailing from. Assuming you are arriving at an airport, you’ll obviously spend the greatest amount to get to cruise ports farther away. Ports like Galveston and Port Canaveral are located far from the nearest airports and you can expect to spend between $40-60 each way for the cheapest options. Ports like Tampa , Port Everglades , and Miami are just a short ride away and you can get to the port for about $10 per person.

Parking If you are driving from the port, then you don’t have to worry about paying for a ride to the ship. But you do have to pay to park your car during your stay. Parking at the port is the most convenient option, but also the most expensive. You can expect to pay between $10-$20 per day. Want to save? Look for independent parking lots with cheaper prices, or if staying at a hotel near the port, look for one that lets you park for free during your cruise in return for one night’s stay.

Cruise Fare Cruise fares are advertised with enticingly low headline fares. However, you will actually end up paying much more. First, that headline fare is for a single person. Right away you can double the price as cruise cabins are typically sold based on two travelers. Second, the headline rates are for interior cabins. Most people decide to upgrade to nicer cabin, increasing the price. Finally, quoted cruise fares don’t include taxes and port fees. In total, the price you actually pay can be double or triple that headline rate that’s advertised.

Be sure you include the total cost of your cruise when using the calculator — not just the headline price.

Gratuities Our calculator automatically estimates gratuities based on the number of days and people traveling. While gratuities can vary, they usually run about $13 per person, per day. So a couple traveling together can expect to pay $26 per day, total.

Excursions Unless you plan to hang out on the ship or find a beach nearby, then you’ll likely want an excursion when in port. Excursions can be fun and make a memorable experience when in port. They can also be expensive. Cheap excursions run about $50 while the most expensive can be $150 per person. If traveling with kids, their ticket is usually a little cheaper, but not by much. You can see excursions you’d like to book on your cruise line’s website to get a better idea of what you might spend on a particular outing.

Alcoholic Beverages Drinking is a big draw on a cruise ship. There’s lots of time spent on the ship and bars are abundant. You can either purchase drinks one by one (they run about $7 for a beer and $10 for a cocktail) or you can purchase a drink package what allows you to drink what you want for one set price. Gambling Want to gamble on your cruise? Be prepared for some poor payouts. The casinos on a cruise ship offer all the games you’d expect, including blackjack, slots, video poker, roulette, and craps. But with a ship full of people and no other casinos around, the payouts offered aren’t that great .

Still, gambling is a fun way to pass the time if you like gaming. Just budget accordingly.

Specialty Dining One of the good things about cruising is that all the food you can eat is included in the price of the cruise fare. But in the past few years the cruise lines have started to offer specialty dining as well. These are separate restaurants from the main dining room that offer things like Italian food, Mexican food, or steaks. You don’t have to eat here, but compared to the prices you’d find on land, these specialty restaurants are a deal (think $35 a person for a steakhouse meal). However, they still cost extra and you’ll want to include the cost when budgeting.

Spa Treatments There’s not much that’s more relaxing than a spa treatment, but it can be expensive on the ship. Prices vary based on deals offered during your trip and the type of treatment you choose. As a rule of thumb, don’t expect to leave the spa without spending at least $100 per person — and possibly more if you decide to get multiple treatments.

Souvenirs/Miscellaneous: What’s a vacation without souvenirs? From professional photos taken by the cruise line to cheap trinkets sold in port, there’s always an opportunity to spend money on souvenirs. And don’t forget miscellaneous things like meals in port, duty-free shopping , and more.

With the rising cost of everything, cruise fares – some even as low as $27 per person per night based on double occupancy – seem like an incredible bargain. And they certainly can be, but the fares you see advertised online often don't include extras like taxes, fees, port expenses, gratuities, shore excursions, specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, room service fees and more.

Cruise pricing can be confusing with so many variables. Unless you're sailing with a smaller luxury line that is all-inclusive , your bill on the day of disembarkation may be unexpected or even shocking. Small things like buying bottled water or renting noodles for floating in the ocean at a cruise line's private island can add up quickly. To help you plan better for a cruise vacation , U.S. News has broken down some of the costs and add-ons you need to take into consideration before booking your next getaway on the high seas.

How much does a one-week cruise cost?

A cruise can cost anywhere from about $109 per person in an interior cabin for a four-night Bahamas cruise up to $101,199 per person for an entry-level suite on a 168-night world cruise – and anywhere in between. Cruise fares vary based on itinerary, number of nights, cabin type, amenities and cruise line. Here are a few examples of base cruise cost ranges on larger cruise lines for various regions:

• A seven-night Caribbean cruise in November ranges from approximately $270 to $2,600 per person.
• A seven-night Alaska cruise in May ranges from approximately $250 to $1,700 per person.
• A seven-night Mediterranean cruise in June ranges from approximately $620 to $2,300 per person.
• A seven-night Mexico cruise on the Pacific Coast in January ranges from approximately $470 to $700 per person.
• A seven-night Canada and New England cruise in October ranges from approximately $490 to $1,100 per person.

What's included in the base fare with a larger cruise line?

Mass market cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line – and more upscale lines like Celebrity Cruises , Holland America Line , Cunard Line , Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises – advertise "starting from" base fares, which are for inside cabins. These are the least expensive staterooms on the ship, and they do not have windows. Staying in these accommodations still gives you access to all the complimentary dining venues and several types of nonalcoholic beverages (such as nonbottled water, iced tea, juices, hot coffee and tea), as well as the ship's pools, gym facilities, kids clubs and onboard entertainment.

If you want a room with a view – or a larger stateroom – consider booking an ocean view room with a window, or a cabin with a balcony or veranda. With these rooms, you'll have access to all the ship's included amenities and typically more spacious accommodations for the week. Of course, this option will come at a higher price point.

No matter which room category you choose, port expenses, taxes and fees are not included in the base fares, and they're automatically added to the cost of your cruise. The amount of these charges will depend on the length of your cruise and where you're sailing. Gratuities for the staff and crew are also additional.

What if you want more amenities and perks?

For more perks, you can splurge on a suite or a higher room category. With Celebrity's Concierge Class, for example, you'll be treated to amenities such as a welcome lunch, a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine, personalized concierge service, an exclusive destination seminar, pillow selection upon request, laundry service and more.

With Disney Cruise Line's Concierge Staterooms and Suites, guests have a dedicated concierge agent offering personalized assistance for pre-arrival planning for port adventures, dining reservations, other onboard activities and special requests. You'll also get priority check-in and boarding, a private welcome reception, free Basic Surf Wi-Fi, access to a private lounge with complimentary food and beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) served throughout the day, and other perks.

You may opt to stay within an exclusive area of the ship, such as the MSC Yacht Club, The Haven by Norwegian or Celebrity's The Retreat. These high-end private retreats offer a mostly all-inclusive experience with additional features, while still including access to all the entertainment, dining venues and more on board. The accommodations can cost hundreds more dollars per day, but you'll have an experience similar to sailing on a small luxury vessel.

For example, the MSC Yacht Club offers an intimate all-inclusive space within its larger ships. The private area is accessible with a key card and features luxurious suites, a dedicated concierge, 24-hour butler service, a private restaurant and lounge, a secluded pool deck, priority reservations for specialty dining, VIP seating for entertainment, and other amenities. There are also additional dining and snack options throughout the day at the pool and lounge.

You'll find similar amenities in Norwegian's and Celebrity's private retreats, including priority boarding and disembarkation, exclusive sun deck areas, and priority access when boarding tenders for going ashore.

Guests of MSC's Yacht Club receive the line's Premium Extra Beverage Package, which covers premium liquors, fine wines and Champagne in the Yacht Club and at most other venues on the ship. Accommodations in The Retreat on Celebrity also include premium beverages throughout the ship. If you're staying in The Haven by Norwegian, a beverage package is not covered in the pricing, but Norwegian frequently advertises its "Free at Sea" package, which includes free unlimited bar, free specialty dining, complimentary Wi-Fi, discounts on excursions and other perks.

What factors determine pricing?

Base pricing and the additional components vary greatly among the cruise lines, so you'll need to determine what your budget is for the trip – and what you can and can't live without when it comes to accommodations and amenities. Travelers may also find that one cruise line has a deal or promotion with reduced pricing that covers airfare, specialty dining, a beverage package, free Wi-Fi or other perks in the advertised rate (such as the Norwegian package mentioned above), while another line isn't running any specials for a similar itinerary.

Voyages on older cruise ships tend to be less expensive, so if you're on a tight budget, consider a ship with fewer bells and whistles. If you're sailing on a short itinerary in the Bahamas and plan to lounge by the pool or on the beach all day, you may not be concerned about having high-tech onboard amenities, martini bars and several specialty restaurants.

Save the money to splurge on more expensive fares when you're planning to sail on longer voyages on larger and newer ships . You'll want several days at sea to enjoy the onboard amenities on some vessels, such as a three-level racetrack and a 10-story-tall slide on Norwegian Viva . It would take a full week (or more) to explore all the entertainment options aboard Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas – or all the new entertainment offerings and attractions on Princess Cruises' latest addition to its fleet: Sun Princess.

Another significant factor to consider is the time of year you want to travel. Better deals are available in the offseason, but the offseason varies depending on what part of the world you're traveling to. For example, May is a great time to find a deal in the Caribbean. The offseason – or shoulder season – in that market typically runs from May to November. However, keep in mind this period overlaps with hurricane season .

You also may be able to find last-minute deals in many other destinations if you're flexible. Working with a travel agent is an excellent way to learn of last-minute specials and cruise deals that offer add-ons like beverage packages, specialty dining inclusions, shore excursions and other perks. You can also check out the online specials that change frequently.

Solo travelers may pay more

If you're traveling alone, you may also need to factor in a single supplement, which can add up to as much as 100% of the cruise fare. To save money, bring a friend so you can access the lower double occupancy fare or consider lines that feature rooms for solo travelers; select Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Celebrity ships offer solo staterooms, as do other cruise lines. These smaller accommodations – typically ranging from around 100 to more than 200 square feet in size – are priced and designed for solo travelers. Key card access to Norwegian's Studio Lounge is included with the line's solo cabins and offers a place to relax and mix and mingle with other cruisers. Other lines that offer solo cabins include Holland America, MSC, Cunard and Virgin Voyages . While the price may not be as inexpensive as the double occupancy fare when traveling with someone else, these accommodations offer some savings over a typical solo fare.

Some lines often feature special deals on select sailings where the single supplement is waived or reduced. A knowledgeable travel agent specializing in cruises can assist in finding the best offers for solo travelers.

'Kids cruise free' promotions can help families save

If you're traveling with kids, many cruise lines – such as Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney and Princess – offer "kids sail free" promotions periodically throughout the year. You can also find discounted fares for children on select sailings.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has fares as low as $999 for children 17 and younger on a variety of select voyages. Regent's regular fares typically start at around $3,600 per person for a seven-night cruise, so this is a significant savings. This fare also includes unlimited complimentary shore excursions and all the benefits and perks of sailing with an all-inclusive luxury cruise line. Regent even has a current promotion where kids sail free on a selection of seven- to 20-night itineraries in Europe and the U.K.

Food and beverages are another expense to consider

Once you determine your total cruise fare with the taxes, fees, port charges and gratuities, you'll need to budget for the additional expenses you'll have on the ship – and these extras can add up quickly. Meals at specialty dining venues, alcoholic drinks and other beverages may not be covered in the basic cruise fare. You'll also have to pay for room service on many ships.

You can purchase specialty dining, beverage and Wi-Fi packages before or during your cruise. These packages offer savings over purchasing everything individually – and it's best to buy them once you book your cruise, as they're typically cheaper to purchase before you board the ship.

For an example of the savings with a food package, Royal Caribbean offers up to a 40% discount with a dining package. This package includes reduced pricing for children ages 6 to 12, while kids 5 and younger eat for free. The cruise line's unlimited dining package also offers discounts on bottles of wine.

In addition to specialty dining venues that charge a flat fee – usually between $30 and $50 – there are also restaurants that charge as much as $135 or more for dinner, such as the adult venues on Disney Cruise Line's ships. Other restaurants feature a la carte menus with sushi, bar food and even steakhouses that price out individual courses. Some of these venues may not include gratuities, so that's another add-on. If you decide to dine at any of these spots – and they're not included in your package – you'll have to budget for them in the total cruise price.

Enticing dessert items in the gelato and ice cream shops on some ships also come with a price, including Coco's and Dolce Gelato on Norwegian or MSC's Venchi Gelati and Chocolate.

There are endless options when considering beverage packages, too, so you need choose what fits best with your interests and budget. Some of the package options are only for nonalcoholic drinks like fountain sodas, sparkling waters and coffees, while premium or deluxe beverage packages cover beer, wine and cocktails, so they are more expensive.

Depending on the cruise line, most premium packages will usually cover drinks up to $15, but many craft cocktails on cruise ships can be quite expensive, costing much more, especially if you request a specific brand for the liquor. If you have the premium package and want to splurge on the fancy beverage, you'll have to pay the difference.

It's important to know that there are a few select venues and bars on some ships that do not accept a beverage package, so you'll have to pay extra for drinks at those places. For example, MSC's ships have several signature venues that do not accept drink packages, such as Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Lavazza coffee shops and Venchi 1878.

Norwegian offers a package that covers top-shelf beverages and select bottles of wine and Champagne, Starbucks coffee, bottled water, soda, specialty drinks and other beverages. You'll need to budget around $138 per person per day for this option – and an additional 20% gratuity. This type of package can add up to quite a bit of money on a seven-day cruise or longer. Bundle pricing

For additional savings, look into bundle pricing that includes specialty dining, Wi-Fi, photos and more. Purchasing them together may be more cost-effective. For example, Holland America offers the "Have It All" package, which encompasses a $100 shore excursion credit, the Signature Beverage Package (including the service charge), one evening of specialty dining and the Surf Wi-Fi package for a six- to nine-day cruise. If you're sailing for 10 to 20 days or even longer, the benefits increase. The line estimates savings of 50% when you purchase this bundle.

While these packages may not always work out in your favor, you'll at least know what your dining, imbibing, excursions, Wi-Fi and even additional activities on the cruise will cost.

Additional costs on a cruise ship

Cruisers will also incur additional fees from excursions, fitness classes, spa treatments, access to thermal spa rooms, babysitting services, ship tours, wine tastings, cocktail demonstrations, cooking classes, laundry services, and some entertainment venues and activities on the ship. Examples include Norwegian's racetrack, Viva Speedway; high-tech attractions like the Robotron thrill ride and the XD cinema on MSC Seascape ; and Carnival's first roller coaster at sea, BOLT.

Wi-Fi access

If you need Wi-Fi during the cruise, that's another cost to factor into the total price. Here are two examples of pricing for internet plans for two cruise lines.

Carnival offers three options for Wi-Fi, using Starlink. The basic Social Wi-Fi Plan gives you access to certain social media channels like Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and more, starting at about $15 per person per day. The cost increases to roughly $20 per person per day with the Value Wi-Fi Plan. This option gives you access to your email and to sites for weather, news, finance and more. It does not support Skype or music and video streaming services like Spotify and Netflix during your cruise.

The last option, Carnival's Premium Wi-Fi Plan, starts at around $19 per person per day and offers speeds up to three times faster than the Value plan. With this plan you can make Zoom calls and use Skype. For all three of these plans, you can save 15% off the total price if you book in advance of your trip.

Celebrity also uses Starlink. The line's "All Included" fare includes basic internet and a classic drink package, which the line says can save you potentially hundreds of dollars. If you don't book that fare, Wi-Fi plans range from around $20 per day for basic service to premium Wi-Fi at $35 per day.

• Shore excursions

If you're traveling to far-flung or new destinations, you'll want to book shore excursions. Cruise lines recommend that you book excursions directly with them rather than hiring an independent tour company or operator, but it can be more expensive to book tours through the cruise line.

However, if you experienced a delay on an independent tour and couldn't get back to the ship on time, there's a chance you could get left behind if you're not on a ship-sponsored tour. If you decide to go with a private tour guide, be sure to book an excursion that will allow you to arrive back at the ship with plenty of time to spare before the vessel departs for the next destination. Most tour operators in busy cruise ports work with the cruise ship schedules all the time, so you should be fine with a reputable independent guide.

Some trips last an entire day or are once-in-a-lifetime adventures like dog-sledding on a glacier in Alaska or taking a helicopter ride over the active volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland. These types of excursions can be costly, ranging anywhere from hundreds to even thousands of dollars. If these types of experiences are not in your budget, look for historic walking or panoramic driving tours. These activities are shorter in duration and typically the least expensive tours available on the cruise. Many of these types of tours will cost less than $100. And, of course, there are always other options available that range between the lower and higher price range of excursions.

If your ship is docked directly in the town or city, then you'll be able to explore off the ship on your own for free. Some cruise lines also offer complimentary shuttle buses into town or a round-trip ride for a nominal fee if it's not within walking distance of the ship. That's another less expensive option for you to sightsee, shop or grab lunch in town.

Transportation

Transportation is another expense that's often overlooked in the total cost of a cruise. Consider if you'll be driving or flying to the cruise port. If you're driving, you'll have to pay for gas and parking at the port – and maybe a hotel the night before the cruise, depending on when you arrive and when your ship is scheduled to set sail. Don't forget the meals or beverages you'll purchase on the way.

If you're flying to the port, especially on a long-distance flight, it's best to come in a day early. In that case, you'll also have to pay for a hotel, transfers from the airport to the hotel and then a transfer (private hire, Uber or cab) to the ship's terminal. There will also be meals to budget for while you're in town before the cruise and a ride back to the airport after the cruise.

Souvenirs or forgotten items

Don't forget to account for purchases on the ship. Items that you forgot to bring from home will be more expensive on board. It's also easy to run up the bill when buying souvenirs for yourself or the kids. It's a good idea to periodically check your bill online or with guest services to see the current balance. You can keep a running tab of what you've billed to your stateroom – and also make sure that the charges are correct.

Cruise pricing checklist

To sum it up, here's a checklist of major items that will help you to compare costs across cruise lines and tally up the total cost of a cruise:

If you don't want to budget for all the individual expenses related to a cruise – and you don't need the over-the-top entertainment of a larger cruise ship – consider booking a mostly all-inclusive or fully all-inclusive cruise with a luxury cruise line . These cruise lines include almost everything in your cruise fare.

Mostly all-inclusive cruises

One option for a mostly all-inclusive cruise is Viking Ocean Cruises . The line's 12 all-veranda ocean-going vessels accommodate between 930 to 998 guests based on double occupancy – and all of Viking's ships feature the same categories of staterooms and suites, dining, lounges, and entertainment venues across the fleet. The ships offer an immersive cultural curriculum on board with regional dishes, destination performances and enrichment lectures.

Viking's fares include veranda accommodations, port taxes and fees, free Wi-Fi, access to the spa and fitness center, 24-hour room service, ground transportation (if you book airfare with Viking), and one complimentary excursion in each port. You'll also have alternative dining options at no extra charge, plus free beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner on board the ship. Specialty coffees, teas and bottled water are available 24 hours a day at no extra charge.

If you like to have an aperitif before your evening meal or an after-dinner cocktail, those beverages will be at an additional cost. You'll also need to budget for any optional shore excursions that are not included in the fare.

Keep in mind that Viking is an adults-only cruise line , so children younger than 18 are not permitted.

All-inclusive cruises

Regent Seven Seas, Silversea Cruises and Seabourn Cruise Line boast all-inclusive luxury experiences with shipwide amenities such as ocean-facing suites, butlers, premium spirits, fully stocked in-suite bars, no tipping and complimentary dining at world-class restaurants.

Additional perks with Regent Seven Seas include complimentary unlimited shore excursions, free two- or three-night land programs, a free one-night hotel stay before the cruise departure, transfers from the airport to the ship, and business class or economy airfare (depending on the destination).

Silversea offers door-to-door arrangements where everything is handled by the cruise line. You can also opt for a port-to-port all-inclusive rate if you prefer to make your own travel arrangements. If you're on one of the cruise line's expedition cruises, fares will include a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay. All door-to-door and port-to-port Silversea fares cover a selection of complimentary shore excursions in each port.

If you're interested in an even smaller ship – and are sailing to the Caribbean or Mediterranean – SeaDream Yacht Club features an intimate luxury experience on its two 56-stateroom yachts. The fares include top-notch cuisine, an open bar, gratuities, complimentary daily yoga, access to water sports and movies under the stars.

How much does a luxury cruise cost for two?

If you want to go on a mostly adults-only luxury ship, what can you expect to pay for two people? This will depend on the ship, where you want to sail and for how long – and what amenities are included in the fare.

For a seven-night cruise in the Caribbean in December 2024 round-trip from Miami with Regent Seven Seas, an all-inclusive cruise fare with suite accommodations starts at $7,398 ($3,699 per person). There are additional perks and savings available, depending on the level of accommodations you book and if you combine this cruise with another voyage. You can also check with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see if they have access to other promotions.

For a Silversea cruise in December 2025 that sails round-trip from Bridgetown, Barbados, the all-inclusive port-to-port cruise fare starts at $9,800 for two people ($4,900 per person) in suite accommodations. Contact a travel agent before booking to see if they can offer upgrades or additional amenities.

While the price tag may seem high, compare the total cost with the base fare on a larger cruise ship and then add in all the extras.

How much does it cost to build a cruise ship?

Today's cruise ships are akin to floating resorts, so it's perhaps not surprising that building a ship can get pricey.

The newest vessels often feature multiple decks with numerous restaurants and bars, entertainment venues, various types of cabin configurations and every attraction you can imagine (such as roller coasters, zip lines and ice skating rinks). The price tag could be astronomical.

The cost of building a cruise ship can vary due to many factors, some of which include ship size, amenities, technology and design. If you're curious just how much money a cruise line needs to construct a new ship, here's everything you need to know.

On average, modern cruise ships cost between $500 million to over $900 million to build.

Cruise ship costs were much different back in the day. When the Titanic entered service in 1912, the 3,300-passenger ship was the world's largest and cost $7.5 million to build (almost $239 million by today's standards).

While we might think of the Titanic as a cruise ship, it was technically classified as an ocean liner. While its main purpose was transporting passengers across the Atlantic, it also carried mail and products. However, it was designed to offer passengers comfort and luxurious sea travel, making it similar to today's cruise ship experience.

Mardi Gras , the first ship in Carnival Cruise Line 's fleet, cost $5 million to renovate and carried 1,248 passengers when it launched in 1972. (The ship was the refurbished Empress of Canada, originally constructed in 1961.)

Carnival's cruise ships have certainly evolved over the years. The line's new Mardi Gras debuted in 2020, showcasing a seemingly endless list of attractions, including the first roller coaster at sea called BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster . The cost to build the 6,500-passenger ship was around $950 million.

Why do cruise ships cost so much to build?

Many components factor into cruise ship construction costs. The bigger the ship and the more passengers it holds, the more money it will cost to build. Also, the number of cabins and suites, as well as onboard features like restaurants, bars, spas, pools and ship attractions (water park, climbing walls, sports areas and the like) add to the final cost.

Additionally, new ships often employ cutting-edge technology and engineering, and cruise lines must pay for the teams of experts needed to turn design dreams into reality. The type of materials used can also drive up the cost, especially if sustainable or ultra-high-end products are used.

Where are cruise ships built?

The shipyards that build most modern-day cruise ships include the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in France, the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and several Fincantieri shipyards in Italy.

At the shipyard, cruise ships are built in a special dry dock. The dry dock is an open dock area that's been drained. When construction is complete, the ship is launched into the water using a float-out technique — shipyard workers flood the dock with seawater, and the ship floats out. Interior work will continue even as the ship takes to the water for sea trials.

What is the most expensive cruise ship?

Size doesn't always matter when it comes to shipbuilding expenses. Ponant Cruises ' 245-passenger Le Commandant Charcot reportedly cost $430 million for a ship with just 123 rooms. Launched in 2021, the vessel is the first expedition cruise ship capable of reaching the North Pole.

Royal Caribbean corners the market for building expensive cruise ships. Allure of the Seas , which debuted in 2010, is currently the world's most expensive cruise ship. It was constructed at the STX Europe Turku shipyard in Finland for a cost of around $1.43 billion.

The 18-deck, 8,454-passenger ship was the second vessel in the line's groundbreaking Oasis Class series. It's one of the world's largest. The ship is chock-full of amusements — multiple dining and drinking venues, a zip line, the FlowRider surf simulator, an ice skating rink and an AquaTheater.

Wonder of the Seas , the line's newest ship, is the second-most-expensive ship at a construction cost of approximately $1.35 billion. Built at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Naizaire, France, the 6,988-passenger vessel, which debuted in 2022, currently holds the title of the world's largest ship. As you can imagine, it also holds a dizzying array of diversions. Additionally, it's the first Oasis Class ship to feature a dedicated neighborhood of exclusive amenities for suite guests.

Set to debut in early 2024, Icon of the Seas might overtake the top spot in the list of most expensive cruise ships to build — just as it will surpass Wonder of the Seas as the largest cruise ship in the world.

Icon is Royal Caribbean's first ship in the line's all-new Icon Class, so its design and style will differ from previous vessels. The 7,600-passenger, 20-deck-tall ship will also be around 6% larger and about 10 feet longer than Wonder of the Seas. Early estimates have the construction cost at $2 billion.

Refurbishing older ships vs. building new ones

While it's more cost-effective to refurbish an older ship than to build a new one from the ground up, those enhancements don't come cheap. Sometimes, the renovations require a complete overhaul, including changing the ship's layout and adding cabins, restaurants and attractions.

For example, 17 years after it launched, Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas received a glow-up in 2019 at a cost of $115 million. Improvements included everything from new furniture, carpeting and upholstery to expanded onboard amenities, entertainment and cabins.
