Animal Crossing Bugs list: All bug prices, locations, and how to catch rare bugs explained

All bugs you can catch in Animal Crossing - and where to find them.

Bug catching is a crucial activity in Animal Crossing: New Horizons . Not only does it help you complete the Museum , but it's also a great way to earn some bells if you manage to catch some rare bugs .

You can also unlock the DIY recipe for the Golden Net by catching every bug in New Horizons. Quite the task, but a worth reward!

Like fish and other aspects of the game, many of the bugs that appear on your island are seasonal , which means that different bugs will appear on your island depending on what month it is.

This Animal Crossing bug list focuses on the Northern Hemisphere for the times of the year insects come and go, but if you want a condensed look at the weeks ahead, we have a dedicated new fish and insects arriving and leaving this month page.

On this page:

How to increase your chances of catching bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

How to catch rare bugs and the best bug prices in animal crossing: new horizons explained, animal crossing: new horizons bugs and their prices list.

Like with fishing , the basics of catching bugs in New Horizons is pretty simple.

First you need to craft a Net , then head out exploring on your island. It won't be long before you find a bug and, once you have, you're left with two choices.

The first is to simply walk up to the bug and swing your net in an attempt to catch it. This is a good approach for bugs that move quite quickly, like butterflies, or ones that are less likely to run away, like bagworms. Yet, it does run the risk of altering the bug to your presence and making it fly away.

If you want to ensure that your prey doesn't flee, you need to take the second, far sneakier, approach to bug hunting.

When you spot the bug you wish to catch hold down the A button. This will allow you to slowly creep you to the bug and capture it, before it manages to escape.

Sneaking up on bugs might take a bit of practice, because certain bugs, like Tarantulas , have the ability to spot you and prevent you from catching them.

insect safari animal crossing

Once you've mastered the basics of bug catching, it's time to grab your net and start filling in the entries in your Critterpedia. Below you'll find some more tips to help you catch them all:

  • If you're out bug hunting then it's a good idea to walk, not run. It's easier for bugs to notice you if you're running, which will allow them to escape.
  • A lot of bugs, especially butterflies, are attracted to Flowers . For this reason, it's a good idea to set up a couple of flower gardens across your island. This way you can quickly visit and see if there are any rare bugs for you to catch. Also, the rarer the colour, the more likely rare insects will appear there.
  • Like with fish , certain bugs are weather dependent. Snails, for example, will only appear on rocks when it's raining.

insect safari animal crossing

  • Unlike fish , bugs can appear anywhere across your island. This means your Vaulting Pole and Ladder are essential tools on any good bug hunt. You don't want to lose out on catching a rare butterfly, especially when it flies up a cliff or across a river.
  • Keep not only your eyes peeled but your ears sharp, as you never know what activity might reveal a new bug. You might be harvesting Iron Nuggets from a rock or simply walking around when you see or hear the sign of a new bug.
  • Certain bugs require special items or actions to be completed to allow you to either catch them or have them appear. Wasps , for example, will only appear if a wasp nest falls from a tree when you're shaking or chopping, while flies can only appear if you leave a piece of trash on the ground. Our bug list at the end of this page explains their various sources, but if you don't want them spoilt for you, it's worth experimenting with things which might attract them in real life. Bugs can appear in all sorts of ways!

The Animal Crossing 2.0 update and Happy Home Paradise is here! We can help you with the new additions - including where to find Brewster , Gyroids , new villagers , ordinances , new fences , storage shed , new hairstyles , Froggy Chair , group stretching and Kapp'n boat tours . Cooking is now unlockable, so you need to know how to make both flour and sugar , as well as how to grow carrots, potatoes and tomatoes . Meanwhile, if you're new to Animal Crossing, our New Horizons tips can help with the basics. From the off, there's fish and bugs to catch , flowers and fruit to grow with. One long term goal is building your Happy Home Academy score . Finally, you need tools such as the new ladder and vaulting pole to fully explore.

Catching rare bugs in New Horizons is a great way to earn some bells, especially if you're close to paying off one of your many mortgages .

Yet, as the word rare implies, these bugs can be very hard to catch; you need to be light of foot and swift of hand to catch many of these. You'll also want lady luck to be on your side, because, due to their rarity, these bugs have a low appearance rate.

insect safari animal crossing

You can, however, create your own luck by scaring away the bugs you don't want to catch. Every island can only hold a certain number of bugs at one time; catching or scaring away bugs will cause new ones to spawn, some of which might be the bugs you're looking for.

It should be noted that there are more lucrative money making methods in New Horizons, such as selling selling Turnips .

Still, it's always a good idea to catch a rare bug when you see it - those extra bells won't hurt.

Below you'll find our recommendations for which bugs you should focus on catching in New Horizons:

Orchid Mantis (bug price - 2,400 bells) - Orchid Mantis will appear on flowers between the months of March to November from 8am to 5pm. Thanks to their pink colouring, they should stand out easily from the flowers . Still, always make sure you sneak up on them or else they'll make a quick escape.

insect safari animal crossing

Peacock Butterfly (bug price - 2,500 bells) - Peacock Butterflies will visit your island from March to the end of June and will appear between the hours of 4am to 7pm. If you're having trouble finding these butterflies, ask a friend to send you some seeds from their island, because, the rarer the flower , the more likely these butterflies will appear.

insect safari animal crossing

Wasp (bug price - 2,500 bells) - no matter the month, no matter the time, there's always a chance that you'll find a wasps nest in New Horizons. All you have to do is keep shaking those trees and eventually one will fall, bringing the wrath of the wasp down upon you. Catching a wasp is the hard part - it relies on quick reactions and not accidentally running into any trees.

If you need more help regarding wasps, check out our dedicated wasp page.

insect safari animal crossing

Tarantula (bug price - 8,000 bells) - Tarantulas can appear anywhere on your island from the beginning of November till the end of April between 7pm to 4am. If you've already heard of the fabled Tarantula Island , then you already know that catching these spiders is one of the best ways to make a lot of money very quickly. Just make sure you pay close attention to the tarantula you're trying to catch.

If you're having trouble catching tarantulas, check out our dedicated tarantula page.

Here is a list of all the bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as their spawning conditions and other behaviours to be aware of.

Remember, bugs will come in and out of rotation throughout the year, so it's impossible to get everything at any given time. If you're hoping to get them all and want to see what's urgent - the things about to leave, and what's appearing - our dedicated new fish and insects arriving this month page can help you see these at a glance.

It should be noted that the following months are for the northern hemisphere . If your island is in the southern hemisphere, then each set of dates will differ by six months.

Here are all bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, in the order they appear in the Critterpedia:

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there are three ongoing collection tasks that you’ll be continually working through as the seasons pass in the game.

There are 80 species of fish to catch around the year , and you’ll be tasked with digging up as many fossils as you can each day in an attempt to compile all 35 complete fossil specimens in the museum .

The third quest set by Blathers, much to their detest, is for you to collect every species of bug on the island.

Much like with the island’s native aquatic life, there are 80 different species of invertebrates for you to catch, with the species available to find being dependant on the time of year and time of day.

Here’s how to go about catching bugs and a complete list of all bugs in ACNH.

How to get a net in New Horizons

The net, or rather, the Flimsy Net, is one of the first items that you learn to craft in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

After completing the opening tutorial day on your new island, Tom Nook will allow you to use his workbench, teaching you how to craft a flimsy fishing rod and a flimsy net.

The recipe for a flimsy net is as simple as it gets: all you need is five tree branches.

insect safari animal crossing

It is also possible for you to buy a Flimsy Net and superior forms of bug-catching nets from the item shop, Nook’s Cranny, as the game progresses.

insect safari animal crossing

As you can see in the image above, a Flimsy Net costs 400 Bells, while the other example of net on sale here, the Star Net, costs 2500 Bells.

How to use a net in New Horizons

insect safari animal crossing

As is the case with all tools in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, using a net is as simple as pressing the A button.

However, there is a knack to using the net perfectly so that you don’t scare away or miss any bugs that you wish to catch.

When you see an invertebrate that you want to catch, you’ll first need to equip your net by either pressing Left or Right on the d-pad, via your inventory (X), or from the tool wheel (which you can unlock with Nook Miles).

With your net equipped, you’ll need to line-up the front face of your character’s body with the insect.

As your character pulls the net directly over their head in its swing, you need to be facing the bug while also in range.

Particularly with bugs like beetles, which fly off when startled, you’ll want to approach them slowly.

Fast movement will scare off some bugs, so be sure to walk slowly and turn slowly towards them before pressing A to cast your net.

Some bugs will require you to be very quick not just to catch them, but also to avoid being bitten or stung. For example, when you disturb a wasp nest, you can avoid getting a wasp sting by netting the wasps.

However, if you’re too slow, you’ll get an unsightly wasp sting that you’ll want to heal .

Animal Crossing: New Horizons invertebrates fishing list

insect safari animal crossing

Whenever you catch a bug in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and give it to Blathers for examination and to be displayed, you’ll learn all of the key details about the invertebrate (see above).

So, you can always go back into your NookPhone (ZL) and consult the Critterpedia to find where and when to catch the bug again.

There are 80 species of bugs to catch regardless of if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere or Southern Hemisphere, but the seasonality of most invertebrates is different between the regions.

Unlike catching sharks in ACNH , you’ll invariably be able to see the exact species before you swing a net at the bug, making it easier to keep track of what you’re hunting.

To unlock the seasonally-locked invertebrates, you can use the time-travelling technique to collect bugs in the past and future.

Whenever you venture out, be sure to have a couple of Flimsy Nets or one trusty net on you so that you can capitalise on all of the bugs of the season.

One response to “Animal Crossing New Horizons: Complete Bug Catching Guide”

Hey Ben Chopping, incredible post! As a fervent hiker, I found your insights on backpack essentials highly precise! Musing on your advice, I used to carry raw instant noodles, which bypasses the whole fire issue. Did you ever try this, yes or no? Also, readers might find information about locating clean water in the wild invaluable. A friendly critique: How about deep-diving into survival tools? A whiff of nostalgia kissed me as you mentioned the old Eagle Scout Manual; reignited lost memories of my camping days! 💼🏔️ What’s your take on digital vs manual compasses? Keep exploring, mate!

Top 5 expensive bugs.

The top 5 most expensive bugs in the game are all beetles and they're also among the most difficult to catch !

It's best to hold on to these and sell them for double the price when Flick visits your island!

While these bugs are the most profitable, there are some that are easier to catch that can sell for a relatively good price!

Craft a Net

In order to catch bugs, you will first need to craft or buy a net. After equipping the net and finding a bug, hold the A button to ready your net and creep forward, then release the A button once you are close to catch it.

Bugs are found in various different locations, and you'll have to adjust your technique in order to catch each different type! List of Nets

Tread Lightly Around Local Flora

Be careful when running through fields of flowers, or whenever you pass by trees and tree stumps. Bugs love hanging out around plants which makes them harder to spot!

Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Tips and tricks for catching rare bugs

Make some moolah by capturing rare bugs and selling them.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Safely Catch Bugs

Curate mystery islands

Scare away common bugs, hunt bugs during different times of day, keep a close eye (and ear) out.

  • Always have a spare net

Know when to use which movement style

Among the many different ways to make lots of Bells in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, catching rare bugs is one of the most lucrative and rewarding. In addition to this, rare bugs are also incredibly important creatures for museum completionists to catch as they're important for finishing exhibits. That being said, rare bugs are named that way for a reason. They're difficult to come by, and often times they're easy to scare off, too. Thankfully, we're here to help improve your odds at finding and catching these elusive critters. Here's our list of tips and tricks to help you catch rare bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Image

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Upon coming to a deserted island, you'll be able to harvest materials, collect bugs, go fishing, build your dream house, and make friends with animal villagers. This is an adorable life simulator that you can get lost in.

Animal Crossing Selling Tarantula

If there's a specific type of bug that you want to try and catch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons , the best way you can try and get them to spawn is to curate the island you're on to increase their spawn chance as much as you possibly can. Since this will require chopping trees down and more, you should do this on a mystery island. These can be visited by redeeming 2,000 Nook Miles for a Nook Miles Ticket from the kiosk in Resident Services and then using it to fly with Dodo Airlines.

First, look up where (and when) the bug you're after spawns (you can do so using our handy guide! ). As an example, tarantulas and scorpions will only spawn on the ground. Armed with this information, you will then need to eliminate the chances of any other bug spawning on the island by removing the other types of scenery that bugs can spawn on. This means chopping down every tree, digging up every stump, destroying every rock, and picking the flowers off of every flower plant. You don't have to pick up weeds, but you can if you want to.

This won't guarantee that your desired bug will spawn — certain critters like wharf roaches or giant water bugs spawn in places that you can't get rid of with tools — but it will drastically increase the chances of them appearing. This is currently the best method for farming a specific type of rare bug in the game. With all of the added ways to collect insects, you can see why this is one of the best Nintendo Switch games out there.

If you want to hunt for rare bugs without tearing apart the island you're on to boost your chances, the next best thing you can do is scare away common bugs that you don't want to find. This is because in New Horizon, an island can only have about four or five bugs on it at any given point. If those slots are being filled by common and generic bugs, there won't be any opportunities for rare critters to spawn in. Therefore, we recommend scaring away these bugs by sprinting near them. If they're a bug that doesn't respond to sprinting, such as butterflies, you can alternatively catch and then release them to get rid of them.

Animal Crossing New Horions Madagascan Sunset Moth

If you want to find a variety of different rare bugs, you'll need to go bug-hunting at different times of day. The aforementioned tarantula and scorpion can only spawn between 7 PM and 5 AM, for instance, while other bugs can only appear in the morning or in the afternoon. We recommend looking up when the critter you want spawns beforehand, but if you're just trying to catch rare bugs in general, make sure to search throughout the day.

In general, a great way that you can increase your chances of snagging rare bugs is to make sure you're playing very close attention to your surroundings, as quite a few of the bugs can be hard to spot if you're not focused. For example, the wharf roach (found on beach rocks), pillbug (pops out of rocks when you hit them), and flea (may be found on another villager) can all be tough to spot if you're not looking around much. Bugs like this don't tend to sell for a lot of Bells, but they're fairly rare nonetheless and catching them for your museum is a good idea.

While walking around, you should also be actively listening to sounds around you as well. This is because some uncommon bugs, such as crickets and beetles, can be heard before they can be seen.

Always have a spare net on hand

Animal Crossing New Horizons Bug Catching Stump

This seems like a no-brainer, but nevertheless it's extremely important. The last thing any bug hunter wants to do is run into one of the rarest bugs in the entirety of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but be forced to give the catch up because their one and only net broke after catching a grasshopper beforehand. Having an extra net or two in your inventory can be a catch-saver.

Animal Crossing New Horizons Safely Catch Bugs 008

Lastly, a critical general tip to know is that you can use your net in two ways. You can use it quickly by walking or running up to a bug and hitting the A button to swing it speedily, or you can choose a slower and more cautious approach by holding down A and preparing your net and creeping toward the bug you're trying to catch. When you let go of the A button, you'll swing your net instantaneously.

Both types of movement have their place in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The quick and aggressive method is ideal for bugs that don't scare easily and move constantly such as butterflies, bees, and grasshoppers. The slow and methodical approach will be required for bugs that scare easily and stay in one place without moving much, such as the atlas moth or ladybug. The wait-and-release mechanic of the slow method is also ideal for catching bugs that try to chase you down and attack you, like tarantulas, scorpions, and wasps. While using the slow method, we recommend practicing for awhile so that you get used to how far you're able to swing.

Master bug hunter

Different species of bugs appear at different times of the year in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. If you plan accordingly and play strategically, you'll be able to capture tons of bugs in no time. Rare bugs are harder to come across, but if you go on the hunt for long periods you might find some valuable insects.

NH Bug-Off.jpg

The Bug-Off is a bug catching competition in the Animal Crossing series that is held during the summer , in the months of June , July , August , and September . In New Horizons , islands set in the southern hemisphere have the Bug-Off during the months of November , December , January , and February .

Prior to New Horizons , the Bug-Off is hosted by Nat , except in Animal Crossing: Wild World , where it is hosted by the mayor, Tortimer . In New Horizons , the event is now hosted by Flick , who also appears as a regular visitor. The event runs from 12 PM to 6 PM in Wild World , and 9 AM to 6 PM in City Folk , New Leaf , and New Horizons .

Appearances [ edit ]

Prior to new horizons [ edit ].

insect safari animal crossing

Each entry is rated in points according to size (small, average, big), rarity and luster (dull, average, impressive) - which makes it random to determine what insects will be rated highly, but more common insects tend to be overall lower rated than rarer ones. In Animal Crossing: Wild World , bugs are rated by size only, meaning the same species of insect may be able to overwrite an already existing entry.

During the day of the competition, each time a player gives a bug that achieves a new high score, they receive a gift from Nat ( Tortimer in Wild World ). In Animal Crossing: New Leaf , players will receive an item from the Insect Set if they hand over a record-breaking bug worth at least 80 points. At the end of the competition, the winner of the Bug-Off receives a mention on the bulletin board as well as a bronze, silver, or gold trophy through the mail for reaching third, second, and first place respectively. There are no trophies for second place in Wild World and City Folk .

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf , there is an awards ceremony where trophies are presented to the top three participants. It occurs in Nat's tent between 6 PM and 9 PM, and trophies will be mailed instead if the player does not show up between those times.

The Bug-Off is the bug counterpart to the Fishing Tourney , which runs during the other eight months of the year. The Bug-Off is different to the Fishing Tourney, since there is only one type of competition - bugs are caught according the color, rarity, luster and size only, unlike the Tourney which has two competitions: size and type.

In New Horizons [ edit ]

insect safari animal crossing

Any bugs the player catches are sent to a bug cage in the plaza rather than their pockets. After scoring, the player can sell the cage's contents to Flick for 1.5 times the sell price at Nook's Cranny , and they are required to do so before they may participate again or swap their points for items. To keep any caught bugs, the player must select the bug from the bug cage before bulk-selling.

During the Bug-Off, villagers are seen trying to catch bugs with Nets (although they cannot actually catch them), and they will only talk about the event, meaning no items can be received or given, and no favors or Reactions can be received. Villagers who are in their houses will converse as usual, except in some cases they may remind the player about the Bug-Off when talked to, and then mention why they're not participating themselves.

Scoring [ edit ]

Players receive points based on the number of bugs caught, regardless of their rarity.

  • 1 point per bug
  • 2 bonus points if three or more bugs were caught

Multiplayer [ edit ]

There are additional benefits for participating in the Bug-Off during local or online multiplayer . During multiplayer, the 500 Bell entry fee is waived for all participants. In addition, there is a cooperative bonus: if 5 - 9 bugs are caught between the players, all players will earn 5 bonus points each (regardless of the number of bugs caught individually). If the total amount of bugs caught is between 10 and 14, all players will receive 7 points bonus. The highest possible bonus is 10 points, when total amount of bugs caught is 15 or more.

To begin a Bug-Off, only one player needs to ask Flick to start the timer. The timer will begin for everyone without prior warning, meaning that other players must prepare their nets and find the nearest bug close to them to catch. A Bug-Off can also only be started after everyone has cleared their cages (whether by selling to Flick or manually removing the bugs from it).

Players can join or leave the island during the Bug-Off, but the timer will not pause. If connection is lost and/or the island state is reset, it is possible for everyone to lose their catching progress.

Rewards [ edit ]

After obtaining 10 or more points, players can exchange their points for a "bug relic." The 13 possible items are distributed in a random order, after which the player will start receiving duplicate items. In addition, if the player obtains 100, 200, or 300 points over the course of the day, Flick will mail them a corresponding trophy (bronze, silver, or gold). This total is cumulative; points that have been traded in for relics still contribute to the total.

Although the tourney ends at 6:00 PM, Flick will remain in the plaza until 8:00 PM, so points can still be exchanged for rewards until he leaves. After he has left, the bug cage remains in the plaza for the rest of the night, in case the player still needs to retrieve their bugs from there.

Trivia [ edit ]

  • The February Bug-Off has Flick asserting that the next Bug-Off (including bug season) will continue onto March, which is invalid given the internal coding of when the Bug-Off takes place.
  • The December Bug-Off has Flick declaring bug season to be over, despite the following month featuring many new bugs to catch, as well as another Bug-Off taking place.

insect safari animal crossing

Comment savoir quand a lieu l’insectosafari .

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

  • Baguette insecte
  • Cafard en plastique
  • Cage à insecte
  • Cage à insectes artisanale
  • Chemisette Hawaï insectes
  • Mille-pattes en plastique
  • Mur papillons de jour
  • Parapluie coccinelle
  • Plaque toile d’araignée
  • Sac à dos papillon
  • Tapis coccinelle
  • Toile d’araignée

Les trophées

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

Nos conseils pour réussir

Où trouver des insectes .

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons

Insectosafari - animal crossing new horizons
