The volcano inside the 360 experience at Journey

I had dinner inside a ‘volcano’ at this new immersive restaurant and bar

This new spot near Madison Square Park brings theatricality to your dinner plate.

Shaye Weaver

On Monday, my dinner table began smoking and my dish emerged from a glass cover filled with even more smoke. The room glowed with the amber-red hue of lava and the sound of crackling fire filled the space.

I was at Journey , a new restaurant, bar and lounge that is bringing “theatrical gastronomy” to New York City with immersive video installations paired with fine dining and mixology.

On its surface, it may sound like a gimmick, but a deeper dive—actually experiencing it—yields a fun night out with actually good drinks and food.

RECOMMENDED: You must solve a cipher to enter this speakeasy-styled restaurant and bar

Journey, which had a soft opening this week at its Madison Square Park location at 27 West 24th Street, is a celebration of travel and the connections we make with people on our…well, journeys.

The playfully-decorated space shows off a massive collection of globes from thrift shops and antique stores, 3D sculptures of the world’s most famous landmarks and buildings above its bar, a display of replica antiquities, and a wall of moving classical art a-la Harry Potter.

Journey salon art

Each area within the space—the bar, the salon, and the café—has a theatrical element.

At the bar, the cocktails you order (Legends of the Fall, Bloody Sunset, Apocalypto and Adordable Ruby) have accompanying comedic skits via augmented reality projected right in front of you on the bar top, including whiskey professor Ben Vereen.

In the “Epic Café,” where you can order a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner, the dishware has hidden 3D designs that you can unlock through an app on your phone.

In the beautiful and boothed Salon, which contains the collection of replica antiquities, projections bring sculptures to life and a hostess bedecked in stunning “FashionTech” couture tells you the stories behind them, adding a layer of live performance to your experience.

Journey Experience Bar

The bar, Salon and Epic Café each have their own menus from chef Edward Hong.

Two additional experiences are available at Journey: Journey Odyssey and Journey 360.

Opening on Friday, the 50-seat, ticketed experience Journey Odyssey creates a multisensory dinner experience at tables for two and four. Some of Broadway’s most talented performers— Cady Huffman and Judy Kaye —have filmed a series of amusing vignettes that introduce each of the five courses, which hail from different locales: an appetizer in Tokyo, the first course in Venice, and the entrée in Buenos Aires.

Journey Experience Bar

Perhaps the most impressive and immersive of all the experiences at Journey is Journey 360, which is where the firey table inside a volcano exists.

The ticketed culinary adventure, which fits 20 people at a time around a long, communal table, features 360 projection mapping that transports diners to four different locations across the world.

On Monday, I did the 360 experience and was whisked away (on a virtual airship named Celestine) from the top of the Empire State Building to the Amazonian rainforest to the artic, from a shipwreck under the sea to the inside of a volcano and finally to outer space. Throughout the entire five-course prix-fixe meal, the visuals and soundscape surrounding us were entertaining and were made even more exciting by an actor wearing a techie dress who led us through the trip.

Each dish corresponded to a setting—Amazonian greens (a salad made with Yuca, tocacho, hearts of palm, Cupaucu vinaigrette) in the rainforest; gin-cured arctic salmon (with cucumber, horseradish, apple and dill) at the Artic; black cod (with miyoga, bok choy and yuzu dashi glaze) under the sea; braised veal cheek (with forbidden rice risotto, harissa and marscapone); and raspberry mousse with chocolate gelato (almond texture, cardamom foam and Grand Marnier) in space.

Journey Experience Bar

While in the volcano, waiters placed dry ice on the table to make it smoke, then they brought out the veal, covered with glass domes. In one synchronous movement, the waiters lifted the domes and vapor poured out across the dish and our place settings. It was the crescendo, the high point, of the entire meal and it was indeed theatrical.

And yes, the visuals were fun, but the best part of the whole experience was seeing this all unfold with the people (strangers) around me. I ended up grabbing cocktails with a couple sitting across the way afterward in the salon, which is not a typical thing for me to do.

If you want to take your own journey in the middle of midtown, tickets for the shows Journey 360 and Journey Odyssey ($175pp) are available on the Tock app and at exploretock.com . Reservations for the Café or the Salon can be made through Open Table.

Journey, a One-of-a-Kind Restaurant in New York City, Is Not to Be Missed: Details on the Unique Dining Experience

Nov. 3 2023, Published 5:02 p.m. ET

If you've ever wanted to see dinner AND a show, here's your chance! Journey NYC , located in the Big Apple , is a unique dining experience that you won't get anywhere else.

From immersive video installations to fine dining, the experience is one you won't forget, as it "takes you around the world without ever leaving the dinner table," the restaurant's website reads.

The restaurant is located in NYC.

"Journey introduces theatrical gastronomy to New York City , a wholly original entertainment and dining concept blending fine dining with an immersive experience created by a world-class team of video, fashion and Broadway creators," Co-Owner/Founder Marc Routh exclusively tells Morning Honey .

"In our increasingly fragmented society where we spend so much time isolated behind our various screens and devices, there is a heightened desire to join together. As a Broadway producer, I am aware that we’re competing for our audiences’ time with social experiences, so bringing together great food, design and performance in a playful integrated setting offers a unique and satisfying challenge," Routh adds.

The concept is original!

Journey combines four separate experiences under one roof, which makes it all the more fun!

Journey 360 combines a five course pre fixe dinner created by our award-winning international chef Diego Negri with state of the art 360-degree projection technology. The adventure is guided by a live performer with the guests seated at a communal table.

Journey Voyager and Journey Odyssey are different dining experiences utilizing tabletop projections. Patrons are seated at their own individual tables in an intimate room enveloped by the Dawn to Dusk Mural.

Stella Lounge features cocktails accompanied by comic bar top videos, inventive craft cocktails, and ever-changing content on the video “paintings” in a cozy lounge designed by Tony Award winner David Gallo.

Journey A La Carte places Chef Diego Negri’s inspired culinary creations centerstage in a setting featuring 3 D Models of famous architecture from around the globe and dinner plates designed with an augmented reality component.

Chef Diego Negri worked on the menu.

Additionally, Chef Diego Negri , who has worked at notable restaurants such as St. Theo’s, Lupa, Marea and Eleven Madison Park, is in charge of the menu, which is not to be missed.

"The menu I created is an interaction and accumulation of my life experiences, that I have learned throughout my journey — resulting in the creation of authentic dishes," Negri exclusively tells Morning Honey . "For now, I recommend trying a bit of everything to experience the originality and the combination of textures that our dishes offer to your palate."

'The experience takes you around the world without ever leaving the dinner table,' the restaurant's website reads.

This one-of-a-kind restaurant, which was designed by Broadway vet David Gallo , was conceptualized by Co-Owners Alex Cesaria (NYC and Aspen Restauranteur) and Marc Routh (8-Time Tony Award Winning Broadway Producer), is not to be missed!

Art in New York City

' src=

Here are the art highlights we love in New York City right now.

CLLCTV.NYC just presented the solo exhibition of New York artist FRIDGE with “FreezerBurn Factory” and it will run until April 30.

Featuring over 100 new and old handmade mixed-media works, this exhibition explores the artist’s wide-ranging repertoire. For this new exhibition, the artist transforms the gallery space into a fully immersive factory, taking viewers into a hypothetical scenario of what would happen if AI took over and converted it into a robot facility. The artist asserts that new technology functions as tools and catalysts for a progressive approach to engaging with art and its evolution, as demonstrated through the included works of mixed-media sculptures, a custom video game and kiosk, AI-generated digital prints, and 11 large-scale paintings. Celebrated for his unconventional fabrications, the artist continues exploring the integration of traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies’ infinite capabilities, between the tangible and the virtual.

RINGO’S COUNTRY — (Via Forbes) Ringo Starr had a very busy 2023. He released a new EP, toured, and even reunited with Paul McCartney to produce one last Beatles single, “Now and Then.” One might assume that after so much activity, the 83-year-old might take some time off, but according to the musician himself, he’s still hard at work–and trying something new.

In a video he posted to X (formerly Twitter), Starr shared some very exciting news for his fans. It seems that he’s back in the studio working on new music. That would be enough to tantalize his still-massive following, but the kind of music he’s making is what caught the attention of many.

Starr shared in his video that he was “gonna do a country EP, but as things are unfolding, it’s probably going to be like a real CD—ten tracks.” He then laughed a bit to himself, adding, “Can you believe it? I haven’t done one of them in a long time.”

The beloved drummer last released a full-length album of original material in 2019 when What’s My Name arrived. That set was a minor commercial success, peaking at No. 99 in his home country of the U.K. and No. 127 in the U.S., where he remains very popular to this day.

Since his last album, Starr has been on a streak, releasing a number of EPs, or shorter collections. In the five years since What’s My Name, the drummer has dropped four EPs, as well as a number of singles, live collections, and more. He most recently returned with Rewind Forward, which even saw him collaborating with McCartney again.

For the moment, there doesn’t seem to be a timetable for when fans may get to hear Starr’s take on country. While he may be working on the material, there’s no telling what exactly it will sound like or when he’ll decide to release something.

In addition to a country collection, Starr also detailed yet another project he’s working on. The former Beatle and songwriter and producer Linda Perry have collaborated on another EP, titled Crooked Boy. That set seems to be his focus at the moment, and it will likely be released before any country tunes. About his friend and producer, Starr commented, “She wrote the songs for me. She produced them. She’s a beauty, so musical,” and said that she “has a great vibe.”

Jackie Chan

CHAN ALERT — (Via Deadline) Jackie Chan has reassured fans that he is in good health after a picture of him with gray hair and a beard sparked concerns for his well-being.

The Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon, and Tuxedo star turned 70 over the weekend and marked the occasion with a post on Instagram in which he addressed health fears.

“Not so long ago, a lot of friends saw some recent photos of me on the internet, and they were all concerned about my health,” Chan said.

“I want to take this opportunity to let everyone know, don’t worry! It’s just a character appearance for my latest movie. The character requires me to have white hair, white beard and look old.”

The viral photos were from an event where Chan was on stage with a microphone. He was wearing glasses and clutching papers.

Last November, Chan was cast in a new Karate Kid movie. He will play Mr. Han, the kung fu master who helped Jaden Smith fend off bullies in Sony’s 2010 Karate Kid remake.

In his Instagram message, the Hong Kong actor said he has cherished every moment of his 62 years in the entertainment industry. “All I can say is: I love making movies and I love you all,” Chan said.

SHORT TAKES — Last week were several top-secret screenings for the new Francis Ford Coppola movie Megalopolis. Per an article in yesterday’s Hollywood Reporter, many attendees found it impossible to position. I haven’t seen it, but how can you deny the director’s importance? That said, I knew one person who went to one of the screenings and he has yet to render an opinion on it. Within these tentpoles, specific goals include tripling the number of people the Fund serves; executing an innovative digital engagement strategy that includes the roll-out of a new client portal funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Digital Accelerator Program; reaching more people in additional communities with services such as scholarships, mental health services, insurance and career counseling; complete construction of The Hollywood Arts Collective, a complex in the heart of Hollywood that combines 151 units of affordable housing with an arts building and a new home for the Fund’s Western Region offices; upgrading the Actors Fund Home, an assisted living, skilled nursing and rehabilitation residence for seniors in New Jersey; modernize The Schermerhorn and The Dorothy Ross Friedman affordable housing residences in New York; and creating an Affordable Housing Catalyst Fund to stimulate investment in new projects.

Fundraising for the ESSENTIAL Campaign began in 2022, with contributions already made by individuals, foundations, corporations, unions and guilds. An additional $1.1 million was raised at the gala last night.

Led by Honorary Co-Chairs Annette Bening and Brian Stokes Mitchell, the ESSENTIAL Campaign Committee also includes Co-Chairs Hugh Jackman, Chris Keyser, Kenny Leon, Matthew Loeb, Shonda Rhimes and Robert Wankel. Committee members include Greg Berlanti, Janice Reals Ellig, Robert Greenblatt, David Henry Hwang, Sharon Karmazin, Brooke Kennedy, James L. Nederlander, Ruth Nerken, Laura Penn, David Rambo, Lauren Reid, Kate Shindle, Henry Tisch and Lisa Ann Walter.

This morning, Campaign Co-Chair Hugh Jackman shared this special message in celebration of the public launch that can be viewed

“The Entertainment Community Fund has been a longstanding cornerstone in our industry, lending support and meeting the unique needs of thousands of people. Still, more of our colleagues need help, and it will take all of us to support the transformative ESSENTIAL Campaign and ensure that the Fund reaches as many individuals who need these services as possible,” shared Committee Co-Chair Shonda Rhimes.

Bening and Mitchell added, “As Board Chairs for the Entertainment Community Fund and as Honorary Co-Chairs for the ESSENTIAL Campaign, we are tremendously grateful to everyone who has already supported this fundraising initiative and to those who will help us meet our goal. With significant campaign contributions already distributed to provide much-needed services to our community, the Fund is already impacting the lives of more people in more places.”

The Great North American Eclipse

Words fall short in describing the glory of a full solar eclipse.

The moon makes first contact with the sun

The wonder that we live on this unique planet is humbling and it was wonderful that a natural occurrence could bring quiet and camaraderie to our nation as millions of people along a long stretch of our country donned funny glasses and looked up to the sky in unison.

Yes, many portions of the path of totality were shaded with clouds but even without clear views of the moon covering the sun the quiet of those minutes could be heard loud and clear.

The temperature dips as the sky darkens

I traveled to Mazatlán, Mexico to witness the event. Mazatlán was the first location in North America to see this year’s eclipse and weather forecasts predicted cloudless days (2 weeks prior). Of course you can never be certain of the weather and although the forecast turned darker as April 8 th approached, we did wake up to a clear sky that morning. The sunset the evening before was an optimistic sign.

The beautiful sunset the night before gave us hope for clear skies

journey 360 nyc menu

At 9:51am the moon made first contact with the sun and it slowly moved from right to left gobbling the star until it finally blocked the light for a 4 minute interval. The temperature declined; the birds flew back to nest out of confusion as they felt the day had ended prematurely.

After 4 minutes the sun starts to come back in view

journey 360 nyc menu

That is not a crescent moon – but a crescent sun

For four minutes we were able to remove our UV paper glasses and gaze up to see the amazing event. It is hard to comprehend that our earth has a moon that has the perfect circumference and is at the optimal distance from the sun that when its orbit crosses between the sun and earth it totally blocks the sun. Its important to note that the sun’s diameter is 400 times larger than the moon and coincidentally the sun is 400 times farther away; that is why this phenomenon can occur.

There is no wonder that ancient civilizations were afraid that the gods were angry, the end of the world was near or that a sacrifice was needed to appease the heavens.

So after that brief explanation – no more words – just photos (taken from my cellphone with a set of eclipse glasses in front of the lens.)

JOURNEY EXPERIENCE NYC

Immersive dining in the flatiron district.

Enter Journey Experience NYC and you will immediately feel like you’re in an elegant and sophisticated dining room. Go to the back and side rooms, and you will find unique immersive experiences that are $175 per person—but worth every penny.

journey 360 nyc menu

The Journey 360 room is fascinating. Picture a long communal table with classic white linens and five-course menus neatly tucked into the napkin with each guest’s name projected onto their seating spot! In addition, there are projections on the walls around you that make you feel as if you are dining in a zeppelin tethered to the Empire State Building and other famous landmarks around the world. Some of the different experiences within this unique eatery include a dark back lounge with fantastic art and furniture from around the world, including a “bottomless” table with endless swirls of lightbulbs under the glass.

The two masterminds behind Journey Experience NYC are Broadway producer Marc Routh, a co-owner of the Tony Award-winning Broadway supper club 54 Below, and noted restauranteur Alex Vanderbilt. Both are proud of the high praise they are getting for their groundbreaking project. Vanderbilt told New York Lifestyles, “Journey 360 is more multimedia and technology-based, so it feels extremely intriguing when you sit at the table with your name emblazoned on the seat. Journey Odyssey is more theatrical and has that life-actor integration that makes the show feel more Broadway and less technology.”

However, the star in both experiences is the food, the quality, and the creativity of the dishes. Chef Edward Hong has created each dish to support the location and narrative while surprising and delighting the guests through traditional culinary sensations of taste, smell, and visuals. The cuisine is a real mix of styles and includes a lot of raw fish. Vanderbilt calls it “new American cuisine with a Korean influence. We are so proud of our care in preparing and sourcing farm-to-table ingredients, to the prime choice of fish, meat, and other proteins.” In addition, sitting at either the front or back-room bars provides a la carte off an elevated bar menu—with no reservations required.

journey 360 nyc menu

AN “EPIC” EXPERIENCE If you want standard dining without immersive experiences, book an a la carte dinner in the front room, Journey Epic Café. The go-to dishes we tried and have been obsessed with ever since included the appetizers: the Wagyu Sliders which are a meal in themselves—you get three giant dry-aged sliders topped with artisanal melted cheddar. Finally, we teamed those burgers with the Disco Fries, hearty sticks of potatoes boiled, fried, and then baked with melted Gouda and herbs.

When it came time for the entrees, we decided to go big or go home and share a large steak! The dry-aged Tomahawk Steak is an impressive 40 ounces, including the extra-large bone, and can feed three or four people! It is sided with homemade chimichurri sauce, roasted veggies including multicolored carrots, and super buttery mashed potatoes, the perfect medium-to-firm consistency!

For dessert, we split the Raspberry Mousse and Baba Au Rhum, which are done halfway between “deconstructed” and “classic” styles. The Raspberry Mousse features a unique consistency, almost like cookie crumbs have been mixed in, while the Baba Au Rhum is served warm, with homemade custard in both the center and on top.

journey 360 nyc menu

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Each night has different immersive experiences, and there will be more choices as time goes on—check the Journey Experience NYC website for the themes available the night you want to book.

If you want simple a la carte dining in the Journey Epic CafĂŠ but still want to experience the projections, you can visit the bars and ask the friendly bartenders to show you some visuals.

The most popular immersive journey is Journey Odyssey. It features Broadway performers Cady Huffman and Judy Kate doing vignettes about visiting each country representing the five courses. The Journey 360 option gives you the experience of dining in the center of a volcano. Amazingly, dry ice is placed on your table, so diners are engulfed in smoke when your food comes out. (Now, that’s what we would call “theatrical gastronomy” at its most extreme!)

VIOSO takes diners on an immersive Journey in New York restaurant

VIOSO’s advanced auto-calibration technology is transporting diners to the North Pole and the bottom of a volcano at Journey, a new high-end dining experience in New York City

By Rob Lane

VIOSO is helping New Yorkers to take their dinner with a side order of interactive storytelling at Journey, a unique new dining destination in New York, where the company’s advanced auto-calibration technology is being used to whisk diners across the world without ever leaving the table.

Billed as ‘theatrical gastronomy’, Journey, at 27 West 24th Street, offers a multitude of ways to dine and be immersed in entertainment. An offering from the brains behind some of the biggest Broadway shows, Journey pairs food by acclaimed chef Eddie Hong with projection-mapped visuals, audio and live actors.

journey 360 nyc menu

One of the main challenges involved hiding from view the 37 projectors needed to create the experience. Jason McFerran from integrator Illuminating Magic explained: “We didn’t want this to look like a mess of AV equipment – the restaurant was designed by award-winning Broadway designers and has a unique aesthetic in itself, so I was dead-set in hiding the projectors in light shades and in the ceiling as much as I possibly could.”

The star of the Journey experience is Journey 360, a private room that offers communal seating for up to 20 guests. Upon entering, diners are surrounded on every wall with seamless projection, even contiguous along the 24-foot table (12,288 pixels), while 12 projectors fill the chamber but hide neatly within the ceiling. Using a VIOSO camera calibration system, all projectors are kept in perfect warp and blend for the life of the establishment.

Illuminating Magic has previously worked on other immersive dining experiences, including Le Petit Chef at New York rooftop restaurant The View, whose combination of four-course dining with 3D visual storytelling (guests’ meals are ‘cooked’ by the eponymous chef, who stands 6cm tall) has garnered millions of views on social media. Journey, however, is the first to incorporate several different dining experiences with varying levels: wall animations, bar-top, tabletop and full 360°.

The combination of a “cutting-edge video presentation with four channels of spatial audio to accompany your gastronomic adventure is what true immersion looks like – an unforgettable dining experience that caters to all five senses,” said Kevin Zevchik, US director of VIOSO. Further immersion is provided by enabling guests to interact with the environment around them – for example, by writing graffiti on the walls or creating unique snowflakes in the Arctic, all by using their smartphone.

journey 360 nyc menu

Zevchik. added: “Sustaining the 360° visuals is not only a feat from the content creation, but also a requirement from the VIOSO auto-calibration. Given the nature of the buildings in New York City, it is nearly impossible to guarantee a perfect blend every day without auto-cal.”

Playback is also handled by VIOSO hardware, with an Anystation Media server, powered by IOversal Vertex, delivering the ultra-high-resolution visuals key to providing Journey 360’s sense of immersion.

Since launching, the restaurant – and in particular Journey 360 – has garnered rave reviews from critics and customers alike, with positive reviews in  Time Out  and the  New York Times  and being named one of the top-four dining experiences in New York City by  Forbes .

“We are delighted to have played our part in the creation of Journey, which has deservedly taken the New York dining scene by storm,” concluded Zevchik. “As a showcase for how immersive video, properly calibrated, can elevate the gastronomic experience, Journey has well and truly earned its place among the greatest dining experiences in the city that never sleeps.”

VIOSO Takes Diners on Immersive Journey in New York Restaurant

Düsseldorf (Germany), 12th June 2023  – New Yorkers are taking their dinner with a side order of interactive storytelling at Journey, a unique new dining destination in New York, where VIOSO’s advanced auto-calibration technology is being used to whisk diners across the world without ever leaving the table.

Billed as ‘theatrical gastronomy’, Journey, at 27 West 24th Street, offers a multitude of ways to dine and be immersed in entertainment. An offering from the brains behind some of the biggest Broadway shows, utilizing the most advanced technology, Journey takes dining to the next level, pairing food by acclaimed chef Eddie Hong with projection-mapped visuals, audio, and live actors.

The Journey restaurant is divided into four experiences: Journey Lounge, Journey Epic CafĂŠ, Journey Odyssey, and Journey 360. Thirty-seven ultra-high-definition video projectors, along with 12 OLED screens, fill the restaurant, totaling 250 million pixels.

One of the main challenges involved hiding from view the 37 projectors needed to create the experience. “We didn’t want this to look like a mess of AV equipment – the restaurant was designed by award-winning Broadway designers and has a unique aesthetic in itself, so I was dead-set on hiding the projectors in light shades and the ceiling as much as I possibly could,” explains Jason McFerran of integrator Illuminating Magic.

Produced and developed by Zanim8tion, the Journey 360 video content – which includes journeys to the banks of the Amazon, the Atlantic Ocean floor, and the inside of an active volcano – was created completely in Unreal Engine with a custom-made four-camera rig that renders the immersive 360° views. This explains McFerran, came with additional “inherent risks, including camera intrinsics, parallaxes, Z-fighting, and quadrupled render errors”.

“Sustaining the 360° visuals is not only a feat from the content creation but also a requirement from the VIOSO auto-calibration,” adds Zevchik. “Given the nature of the buildings in New York City, it is nearly impossible to guarantee a perfect blend every day without auto-cal.”

Journey 360’s New Menu Lands in Manhattan

You don’t have to choose between dinner and a show when you dine at Journey NYC .

Their premier offering, Journey 360 , is a ticketing dining event, featuring a five-course prix fixe menu highlighting five different world locations. You’ll sit at a communal table with floor to ceiling and tabletop 360 projection mapping that will fully immerse you in your culinary journey.

Your experience begins when you take your seat at your assigned spot (but there are no place cards in sight– your name is seamlessly projected onto the table) in the private dining room meant to emulate a dirigible tethered to the Empire State Building.

Journey 360's New Menu Lands in Manhattan

After you’re settled, you’ll be greeted by a charming guide who will accompany you on your journey to different parts of the world (and beyond). Not only will you be transported with the help of the projection mapping around the room, but with the menu items you’ll enjoy as well.

The new menu, crafted by Chef Diego Negri, features courses inspired by cuisines from all over the world.

Upon leaving the city, you’ll first journey to the Amazon Rainforest for your salad course. And this isn’t your run-of-the-mill house salad. This salad features fresh lola and matche lettuce lightly dressed with a vinaigrette dressing and paired with crunchy yucca fritters, sweet diced mango and earthy Brazil nuts.

Journey 360's New Menu Lands in Manhattan

From there, you’ll go under the sea and enjoy ravioli stuffed with mascarpone cheese and fresh lobster in a cacio e pepe sauce.

Your dish is decorated with a lemony foam, which pairs perfectly with the dish’s flavors and makes it look like your dish is kissed with seafoam. Be sure to keep an eye out for the giant squid that’s sure to swim across your table during this course!

The Arctic is your next stop, complete with projections of the Northern Lights to greet you upon arrival. You’ll be served cod in a bed of potato and leek foam and topped with crunch tobiko eggs.

From “The New York Times,” I’m Katrin Bennhold. This is “The Daily.”

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Today, the story of how China gave Tesla a lifeline that saved the company — and how that lifeline has now given China the tools to beat Tesla at its own game. My colleague, Mara Hvistendahl, explains.

It’s Tuesday, April 9.

So, Mara, you’ve spent the past four months investigating Elon Musk and his ties to China through his company, Tesla. Tell us why.

Well, a lot of American companies are heavily invested in China, but Tesla’s kind of special. As my colleagues and I started talking to sources, we realized that many people felt that China played a crucial role in rescuing the company at a critical moment when it was on the brink of failure and that China helps account for Tesla’s success, for making it the most valuable car company in the world today, and for making Elon Musk ultra rich.

That’s super intriguing. So maybe take us back to the beginning. When does the story start?

So the story starts in the mid 2010s. Tesla had been this company that had all this hype around it. But —

A lot of people were shocked by Tesla’s earnings report. Not only did they make a lot less money than expected, they’re also making a lot less cars.

Tesla was struggling.

The delivery of the Model 3 has been delayed yet again.

Tesla engineers are saying 40 percent of the parts made at the Fremont factory need reworking.

At the time, they made their cars in Fremont, California, and they were facing production delays.

Tesla is confirming that Cal/OSHA is investigating the company over concerns over workplace safety.

Elon Musk has instituted a kind of famously grueling work culture at the factory, and that did not go over well with California labor law.

The federal government now has four active investigations involving Tesla.

They were clashing with regulators.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate a second crash involving Tesla’s autopilot system.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk — friends are really concerned about him. That’s what Musk told “The New York Times.”

And by 2018, he was having all of these crises.

According to “The Times,” Musk choked up multiple times and struggled to maintain his composure during an hour-long interview about turmoil at his electric car company, Tesla.

So all of this kind of converged to put immense pressure on him to do something.

And where does China come in?

Well, setting up a factory in China, in a way, would solve some of these problems for Musk. Labor costs were lower. Workers couldn’t unionize there. China provided access to this steady supply of cheaper parts. So Elon Musk was set on going to China. But first, Tesla and Musk wanted to change a key policy in China.

Hmm, what kind of policy?

So they wanted China to adopt a policy that was aimed at lowering car emissions. And the idea was that it would be modeled after a similar policy in California that had benefited Tesla there.

OK, so explain what that policy actually did. And how did it benefit Tesla?

So California had this system called the Zero-Emission Vehicle program. And that was designed to encourage companies to make cleaner cars, including electric vehicles. And they did that by setting pollution targets. So companies that made a lot of clean cars got credits. And then companies that failed to meet those targets, that produced too many gas-guzzling cars, would have to buy credits from the cleaner companies.

So California is trying to incentivize companies to make cleaner cars by forcing the traditional carmakers to pay cleaner car makers, which basically means dirtier car makers are effectively subsidizing cleaner cars.

Yes, that’s right. And Tesla, as a company that came along just making EVs, profited immensely from this system. And in its early years, when Tesla was really struggling to stay afloat, the money that it earned from selling credits in California to polluting car companies were absolutely crucial, so much so that the company structured a lot of its lobbying efforts around this system, around preserving these credits. And we talked to a former regulator who said as much.

How much money are we talking about here?

So from 2008, when Tesla unveiled its first car, up until the end of last year, Tesla made almost $4 billion by selling credits in California.

Wow. So Musk basically wants China to recreate this California-style program, which was incredibly lucrative for Tesla, there. And they’re basically holding that up as a condition to their building a factory in China.

Right. And at this point in the story, an interesting alliance emerges. Because it wasn’t just Tesla that wanted this emissions program in China. It was also environmentalists from California who had seen the success of the program up close in their own state.

If you go back to that period, to the early 2010s, I was living in China at the time in Beijing and Shanghai. And it was incredibly polluted. We called it airpocalypse at times. I had my first child in China at that point. And as soon as it was safe to put a baby mask on her, we put a little baby mask on her. There were days where people just would try to avoid going outside because it was so polluted. And some of the pollution was actually wafting across the Pacific Ocean to California.

Wow, so California is experiencing that Chinese air pollution firsthand and, in a way, has a direct stake in lowering it.

That’s right. So Governor Jerry Brown, for example — this became kind of his signature issue, was working with China to clean up the environment, in part by exporting this emission scheme. It was also an era of a lot more US-China cooperation. China was seen as absolutely crucial to combating climate change.

So you had all these groups working to get this California emissions scheme exported to China — and the governor’s office and environmental groups and Tesla. And it worked. In 2017, China did adopt a system that was modeled after California’s.

It’s pretty incredible. So California basically exports its emissions-trading system to China, which I imagine at the time was a big win for Californian environmentalists. But it was also a big win for Tesla.

It was definitely a big win for Tesla. And we know that in just a few years Tesla, made almost $1 billion from the emissions-trading program he helped lobby for in China.

So Elon Musk goes on, builds a factory in China. And he does so in Shanghai, where he builds a close relationship with the top official in the city, who actually is now the number-two official in all of China, Li Qiang.

So according to Chinese state media, Elon Musk actually proposed building the factory in two years, which would be fast. And Li came back and proposed that they do it in one year, which — things go up really quickly in China. But even for China, this is incredibly fast. And they broke ground on the factory in January 2019. And by the end of the year, cars were rolling off the line. So then in January 2020, Musk was able to get up on stage in Shanghai and unveil the first Chinese-made Teslas.

Really want to thank the Tesla team and the government officials that have been really helpful in making this happen.

Next to him on stage is Tesla’s top lobbyist who helped push through some of these changes.

Thank you. Yeah, everybody can tell Elon’s super, super happy today.

[SPEAKING CHINESE]

And she says —

Music, please.

Cue the music. [UPBEAT MUSIC]

And he actually broke into dance. He was so happy, a kind of awkward dance.

[UPBEAT MUSIC]

And what is the factory like?

The Shanghai factory is huge. 20,000 people work there. Tesla’s factories around the world tend to be pretty large, but the Shanghai workers work more shifts. And when Tesla set up in China, Chinese banks ended up offering Tesla $1.5 billion in low-interest loans. They got a preferential tax rate in Shanghai.

This deal was so generous that one auto industry official we talked to said that a government minister had actually lamented that they were giving Tesla too much. And it is an incredibly productive factory. It’s now the flagship export factory for Tesla.

So it opens in late 2019. And that’s, of course, the time when the pandemic hits.

Yes. I mean, you might think that this is really poor timing for Elon Musk. But it didn’t quite turn out that way. In fact, Tesla’s factory in Shanghai was closed for only around two weeks, whereas the factory in Fremont was closed for around two months.

That’s a big difference.

Yes, and it really, really mattered to Elon Musk. If you can think back to 2020, you might recall that he was railing against California politicians for closing his factory. In China, the factory stayed open. Workers were working around the clock. And Elon Musk said on a podcast —

China rocks, in my opinion.

— China rocks.

There’s a lot of smart, hardworking people. And they’re not entitled. They’re not complacent, whereas I see —

We’ve seen a lot of momentum and enthusiasm for electric vehicles, stocks, and Tesla certainly leading the charge.

Tesla’s stock price kept going up.

Tesla has become just the fifth company to reach a trillion-dollar valuation. The massive valuation happened after Tesla’s stock price hit an all-time high of more than $1,000.

So this company that had just a few years earlier been on the brink of failure, looking to China for a lifeline, was suddenly riding high. And —

Tesla is now the most valuable car company in the world. It’s worth more than General Motors, Ford, Fiat, Chrysler.

By the summer, it had become the most valuable car company in the world.

Guess what? Elon Musk is now the world’s richest man.

“Forbes” says he’s worth more than $255 billion.

And Elon Musk’s wealth is tied up in Tesla stock. And in the following year, he became the wealthiest man in the world.

So you have this emission trading system, which we discussed and which, in part, thanks to Tesla, is now established in China. It’s bringing in money to Tesla. And now this Shanghai factory is continuing to produce cars for Tesla in the middle of the pandemic. So China really paid off for Tesla. But what was in it for China?

Well, China wasn’t doing this for charity.

What Chinese leaders really wanted was to turn their fledgling electric vehicle industry into a global powerhouse. And they figured that Tesla was the ticket to get there. And that’s precisely what happened.

We’ll be right back.

So, Mara, you’ve just told us the story of how Elon Musk used China to turn Tesla into the biggest car maker in the world and himself — at one point — into the richest man in the world. Now I want to understand the other side of this story. How did China use Tesla?

Well, Tesla basically became a catfish for China’s EV industry.

A catfish, what do you mean by that?

It’s a term from the business world. And, essentially, it means a super aggressive fish that makes the other fish in the pond swim faster. And by bringing in this super competitive, aggressive foreign company into China, which at that point had these fledgling EV companies, Chinese leaders hoped to spur the upstart Chinese EV makers to up their game.

So you’re saying that at this point, China actually already had a number of smaller EV companies, which many people in the West may not even be aware of, these smaller fish in the pond that you were referring to.

Yes, there were a lot of them. They were often locally based. Like, one would be strong in one city, and one would be strong in another city. And Chinese leaders saw that they needed to become more competitive in order to thrive.

And China had tried for decades to build up this traditional car industry by bringing in foreign companies to set up joint ventures. They had really had their sights set on building a strong car industry, and it didn’t really work. I mean, how many traditional Chinese car company brands can you name?

Exactly none.

Yeah, right. So going back to the aughts and the 2010s, they had this advantage that many Chinese hadn’t yet been hooked on gas-guzzling cars. There were still many people who were buying their first car ever. So officials had all these levers they could pull to try to encourage or try to push people’s behavior in a certain direction.

And their idea was to try to ensure that when people went to buy their first car, it would be an EV — and not just an EV but, hopefully, a Chinese EV. So they did things like — at the time, just a license plate for your car could cost an exorbitant amount of money and be difficult to get. And so they made license plates for electric vehicles free. So there were all these preferential policies that were unveiled to nudge people toward buying EVs.

So that’s fascinating. So China is incentivizing consumers to buy EV cars and incentivizing also the whole industry to get its act together by chucking this big American company in the mix and hoping that it will increase competitiveness. What I’m particularly struck by, Mara, in what you said is the concept of leapfrogging over the conventional combustion engine phase, which took us decades to live through. We’re still living in it, in many ways, in the West.

But listening to you, it sounds a little bit like China wasn’t really thinking about this transition to EVs as an environmental policy. It sounds like they were doing this more from an industrial-policy perspective.

Right. The environment and the horrible era at the time was a factor, but it was a pretty minor factor, according to people who were privy to the policy discussions. The more significant factor was industrial policy and an interest in building up a competitive sphere.

So China now wants to become a leader in the global EV sector, and it wants to use Tesla to get there. What does that actually look like?

Well, you need sophisticated suppliers to make the component parts of electric vehicles. And just by being in China, Tesla helped spur the development of several suppliers. Like, for example, the battery is a crucial piece of any EV.

And Tesla, with a fair amount of encouragement — and also various levers from the Chinese government — became a customer of a battery maker called CATL, a homegrown Chinese battery maker. And they have become very close to Tesla and have even set up a factory near Teslas in Shanghai. And today, with Tesla’s business — and, of course, with the business of some other companies — CATL is the biggest battery maker in the world.

But beyond just stimulating the growth of suppliers, Tesla also made these other fish in the pond swim faster. And the biggest Chinese EV company to come out of that period is one called BYD. It’s short for Build Your Dreams.

We are BYD. You’ve probably never heard of us.

From battery maker to the biggest electric vehicle or EV manufacturer in China.

They’ve got a lot of models. They’ve got a lot of discounts. They’ve got a lot of market growth.

China’s biggest EV maker just overtook Tesla in terms of worldwide sales.

BYD 10, Chinese automobile redefined.

I’ve actually started seeing that brand on the streets here in Europe recently, especially in Germany, where my brother actually used to lease a Tesla and now leases a BYD.

Does he like it?

He does. Although he did, to be fair, say that he misses the luxury of the Tesla, but it just became too expensive, really.

The price point is a huge reason that BYD is increasingly giving Tesla a run for its money. Years ago, back in 2011 —

Although there’s competitors now ramping up. And, as you’re familiar with, BYD, which is also —

— Elon Musk actually mocked their cars.

— electric vehicles, here he is trying to compete. Why do you laugh?

He asked an interviewer —

Have you seen their car?

I have seen their car, yes.

— have you seen their cars? Sort of suggesting, like, they’re no competition for us.

You don’t see them at all as a competitor?

Why is that? I mean, they offer a lower price point.

I don’t think they have a great product. I think their focus is — and rightly should be — on making sure they don’t die in China.

But they have been steadily improving. They’ve been in the EV space for a while, but they really started improving a few years ago, once Tesla came on the scene. That was due to a number of factors, not entirely because of Tesla. But Tesla played a role in helping train up talent in China. One former Tesla employee who worked at the company as they were getting set up in China told me that most of the employees who were at the company at the time now work for Chinese competitors.

So they have really played this important role in the EV ecosystem.

And you mentioned the price advantage. So just for comparison, what does an average BYD sell for compared to a more affordable Tesla car?

So BYD has an ultra-cheap model called the Seagull that sells for around $10,000 now in China, whereas Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys in China sell for more than twice that.

Wow. How’s BYD able to sell EVs at these much lower prices?

Well, the Seagull is really just a simpler car. It has less range than a Tesla. It lacks some safety measures. But BYD has this other crucial advantage, which is that they’re vertically integrated. Like, they control many aspects of the supply chain, up and down the supply chain. When you look at the battery level, they make batteries. But they even own the mines where lithium is mined for the batteries.

And they recently launched a fleet of ships. So they actually operate the boats that are sending their cars to Europe or other parts of the world.

So BYD is basically cutting out the middleman on all these aspects of the supply chain, and that’s how they can undercut other car makers on price.

Yeah. They’ve cut out the middleman, and they’ve cut out the shipping company and almost everything else.

So how is BYD doing now as a company compared to Tesla?

In terms of market cap, they’re still much smaller than Tesla. But, crucially, they overtook Tesla in sales in the last quarter of last year.

Yeah, that was a huge milestone. Tesla still dominates in the European market, which is a very important market for EVs. But BYD is starting to export there. And Europe traditionally is kind of automotive powerhouse, and the companies and government officials there are very, very concerned. I interviewed the French finance minister, and he told me that China has a five - to seven-year head start on Europe when it comes to EVs.

Wow. And what has Elon Musk said about this incredible rise of BYD in recent years? Do you think he anticipated that Tesla’s entry into the Chinese market could end up building up its own competition?

Well, I can’t get inside his head, and he did not respond to our questions. But —

The Chinese car companies are the most competitive car companies in the world.

— he has certainly changed his tune. So, remember, he was joking about BYD some years ago.

Yeah, he’s not joking anymore.

I think they will have significant success.

He had dismissed Chinese EV makers. He now appears increasingly concerned about these new competitors —

Frankly, I think if there are not trade barriers established, they will pretty much demolish most other car companies in the world.

— to the point that on an earnings call in January, he all but endorsed the use of trade barriers against them.

They’re extremely good.

I think it’s so interesting, in a way — of course, with perfect hindsight — the kind of maybe complacency or naivete with which he may not have anticipated this turn of events. And in some ways, he’s not alone, right? It speaks to something larger. Like, China, for a long time, was seen as kind of the sweatshop or the manufacturer of the world — or perhaps as an export market for a lot of these Western companies. It certainly wasn’t putting out its own big brand names. It was making stuff for the brand names.

But recently, they have quite a lot of their own brand names. Everybody talks about TikTok. There’s Huawei. There’s WeChat, Lenovo. And now there is BYD. So China is becoming a leader in technology in certain areas. And I think that shift in some ways has happened. And a lot of Western companies — perhaps like Tesla — were kind of late to waking up to that.

Right. Tesla is looking fragile now. Their stock price dropped 30 percent in the first quarter of this year. And to a large degree, that is because of the threat of companies like BYD from China and the perception that Tesla’s position as number one in the market is no longer guaranteed.

So, Mara, all this raises a much bigger question for me, which is, who is going to own the future of EVs? And based on everything you’ve said so far, it seems like China owns the future of EVs. Is that right?

Well, possibly, but the jury is still out. Tesla is still far bigger for now. But there is this increasing fear that China owns the future of EVs. If you look at the US, there are already 25 percent tariffs on EVs from China. There’s talk of increasing them. The Commerce Department recently launched an investigation into data collection by electric vehicles from China.

So all of these factors are creating uncertainty around what could happen. And the European Union may also add new tariffs against Chinese-made cars. And China is an economic rival and a security rival and, in many ways, our main adversary. So this whole issue is intertwined with national security. And Tesla is really in the middle of it.

Right. So the sort of new Cold War that people are talking about between the US and China is, in a sense, the backdrop to this story. But on one level, what we’ve been talking about, it’s really a corporate story, an economic story that has this geopolitical backdrop. But it’s also very much an environmental story. So, regardless of how Elon Musk and Tesla fare in the end, is BYD’s rise and its ability to create high-quality and — perhaps more importantly — affordable EVs ultimately a good thing for the world?

If I think back on those years I spent living in Shanghai and Beijing when it was extremely polluted and there were days when you couldn’t go outside — I don’t think anyone wants to go back to that.

So it’s clear that EVs are the future and that they’re crucial to the green energy transition that we have to make. How exactly we get there is still unclear. But what is true is that China did just make that transition easier.

Mara, thank you so much.

Thank you, Katrin.

Here’s what else you need to know today.

[CROWD CHEERING]

Millions of people across North America were waiting for their turn to experience a rare event on Monday. From Mexico —

Cuatro, tres, dos, uno.

— to Texas.

Awesome, just awesome.

We can see the corona really well. Oh, you can see —

[BACKGROUND CHATTER]

Oh, and we are falling into darkness right now. What an incredible sensation. And you are hearing and seeing the crowd of 15,000 gathered here in south Illinois.

Including “Daily” producers in New York.

It’s like the sky is almost —

— like a deep blue under the clouds.

Wait, look. It’s just —

Oh my god. The sun is disappearing. And it’s gone. Oh. Whoa.

All the way up to Canada.

Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about. That’s what I’m talking about.

The moon glided in front of the sun and obscured it entirely in a total solar eclipse, momentarily plunging the day into darkness.

It’s super exciting. It’s so amazing to see science in action like this.
