This list of the best family travel vloggers is a great place to start if you’re looking to watch more travel YouTube channels.

When I sit down to watch TV, my favorite thing to turn on is travel vlogs on YouTube . I love seeing where and how different people travel.

These families showcase full time travel, van life, sailing, and other travel lifestyles. In addition to showing amazing travels, these families are super captivating to watch.

The Bucket List Family is the travel vlog that made me fall in love with travel vlogs. They share global travel with their three young kids.

Their story began when they sold an app to snapchat, sold all their belongings, and set out to travel the world. This travel vlog family was one of the first to set out on a crazy family adventure around the world.

The Bucket List Family has been to destinations all over from the Cook Islands to Zambia to Sri Lanka. Their family is relatable, adorable, and inspiring.

From watching their travel vlogs, I have decided that I will absolutely travel with my kids when I have them someday to enjoy similar travel experiences.

The best way to watch the bucket list family vlogs is from the very beginning, but if you are looking for somewhere to start, check out their Africa vlogs to see the wonder of adventure through little eyes.

2. Top Flight Family

Expertise : Resorts Around the World

Video to Watch First : Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani

The Top Flight Family produces a different style of vlogs than the other creators on this list. Instead of following them throughout their vacations, they share clips from their travels with a super informational voice overlay.

This popular YouTube channel shares a ton of family travel tips and is one of the more educational family vlogging channels.

The Top Flight Family travels with two young girls to amazing resorts and destinations around the world. They’ve done challenges like 21 resorts in 2021 and 22 cities in 2022.

I recommend checking out the Top Flight Family channel if you want information before visiting a specific destination (they cover literally every detail) or if you want help choosing which destination to visit next (they share the dreamiest places).

3. Flying the Nest

Expertise : Unique Destinations

Video to Watch First : Anything in Japan

Flying the Nest have been creating YouTube travel vlogs for years. For a long time, the channel followed Jess and Stephen as they traveled the world full time as a couple.

They shared a daily travel vlog as a couple, exploring the world including Asia, Europe, and the United States.

A few years ago, they had their daughter Hunter and recently their son, Koa. Now, they travel as a young family. Flying the Nest have quickly become one of my favorite family travel vlogs.

They’ve visited destinations around the world such as Disney World, Japan, and Hawaii. More recently, they’ve begun visiting unique destinations such as Mongolia and Bhutan.

This family is so cute and super knowledgeable about travel. I recommend watching Flying the Nest for inspiration of where to visit next.

4. Sailing La Vagabonde

Video to Watch First : Their one hour unedited special

Riley, Elena, and their two young boys, Darwin and Lenny travel the globe in their family sailboat. Over the years, they’ve upgraded their boat and recently launched La Vagabonde III.

I love learning about the unique lifestyle of living on a sailboat. I also love seeing all the beautiful destination they sail such as the Bahamas and Vietnam.

5. Jones Family Travels

Expertise : Disney and Cruising

Video to Watch First : Disney Cruise Series

The Jone Family feels like a normal family you would be friends with, which makes their videos so comforting and relatable.

They capture their family travels with two teenage kids on vacations such as Disney, cruising, and other popular destinations around the world.

They do a great job capturing their family’s personalities, the pro’s and con’s of the destination, and travel tips.

6. Fernweh Chronicles

Expertise : Documentary-style travel

Video to Watch First : Living with the Mentawai tribe

Fernweh is a German term that is often described as a longing for distant places, a yearning for travel. Tara, George, and family run a beautiful and professional family YouTube channel, Fernweh Chronicles.

Their videos are documentary style and look like they belong on network TV. They showcase unique travel experiences such as visiting the Galapagos or staying with a rural tribe, the Mentawai.

7. Epic Family Road Trip

Expertise : Road Trips and Camping

Video to Watch First : Rain Forest Overland Jeep Adventure

The Epic Family Road Trip travel is all about adventure, camping, and off-the-beaten-path destinations. Their videos are slower paced and more tv-show style than some other vloggers.

They film their show in a “season” format with different episodes that showcase their lives exploring the world as a family. Some adventures they’ve done are camping in remote Canada in the winter, driving an overland Jeep, and living in an off-grid cabin.

In our family travel community, Families Who Love to Travel , we often have families asking how to travel the world with kids . Families seeking tips for travel with kids often wonder about the cost of traveling with children , the best age to begin traveling, family-friendly destinations, and more. However, the “how” of traveling with kids can be the largest stumbling block for many families, including people who traveled before kids. If you are wondering how to begin traveling with kids , we have compiled tips, insights, and resource recommendations from our community of family travelers to get you started! Likely, you already know there are many benefits of traveling with kids . However, perhaps the most challenging part of how to travel with kids is actually getting started. In this section, we will take you through the decision-making and booking processes of traveling with children and planning a vacation. Certainly, if you’re wondering how to plan a trip with kids , this section will give you the basics to get started.

The first thing you need to decide as a family is what type of travel is important to you. This will help you determine your budget, length of stay, and what accommodations or activities you pursue. There are many ways to travel with a family. Some families prefer to “slow travel”, which means they may travel with kids for weeks, months, or years at a time. Other families don’t have this luxury or desire, so weekend getaways or week-long trips better suit them. Then, families may prefer luxury travel, camping , adventure travel, relaxing travel, packaged tours, cruises , travel within the United States , international travel, and the list goes on and on. Consider what you already enjoy doing together. Or, what you would like to do, see, or experience while traveling. This will help you narrow down where you want to travel the world with kids .

What Do You Like?

To further explore how to choose your destination, consider the following prompts. Do you prefer hiking, time at the beach, exploring museums, or perhaps something else entirely? Would you rather know what to expect or are you okay going with the flow? Are you planning to fly, drive, or are you open to a cruise? Considering questions like this will help you decide what type of family trip to plan. Knowing how your family already approaches daily life, family activities, or decisions will also help you in planning a vacation for your family. Families tend to mix and match travel styles over time for different reasons. The best way to travel with kids is the way that best suits your family! There is no right way to travel together. The important thing is to travel the world with kids with YOUR budget, style, and family personalities in mind!

Examples of Travel Styles and Destinations

If you prefer a relaxing vacation, destinations like Mexico , Hawaii , or Florida may be a better fit. Likewise, a beach resort or cruise may better suit this travel style. Or, adventure seekers may prefer locations like national parks or Costa Rica . These locations offer options like glamping, zip-lining, and hiking that may be more in line with your interests. Then, your family may be more interested in a cultural vacation where you can incorporate museums, tours, and immersion experiences. Places like Paris , Washington, DC , or Cartagena may offer what you are looking for when traveling with children . Certainly, the important thing is to take trips that will make your family happy.

Pique your child’s interest in the world through Little Global Citizens!

One of the most important steps in learning how to plan a trip with kids is to set a budget. Budgets vary widely from family to family. Knowing your financial situation and what your budget allows will also help you determine what type of trip to take and the length of stay. Some families save up for one big trip a year (or a lifetime), while others may seem to jet off every weekend. There is no “right” budget for family travel. The important thing is that it works for your family. When you are budgeting, you’ll want to incorporate the cost of travel (like airfare, hotel expenses, etc.). But, you should also consider what expenses you won’t have or expenses that will be neutral because you’re traveling (food expenses or the gas needed to commute, for example). 

Where to Save, Where to Splurge

When you’re traveling, there are also ways to cut expenses. Consider staying somewhere with a kitchen to save on food costs. Or, take a family vacation that has minimal activity costs (often, beaches and hiking may be free or low-cost activities). You can also look into traveling with points through credit cards or websites like Scott’s Cheap Flights to assist with cutting expenses. It’s also helpful to decide where to save and where to splurge . For example, some families prefer to make a lot of their own food to save on budget. Then, splurge on one big memorable family activity like whale watching or a Broadway show. Developing a budget and assessing the cost of travel is an important part of learning how to travel with a kid .

Often the best part of traveling with children is choosing the destination! There are so many places to explore in the world. Your destination may be close to home or maybe on the other side of the world. One of our tips for traveling with kids is to include your kids in the decision-making process. Through school, books, or TV shows, they may have an interest in a particular city, state, or country. Asking them for destination insights may surprise you and be a fun way to decide where to go. If you want to travel the world with kids, you may also decide to create a family travel bucket list to help you decide where to go. If you are worried about international travel with kids, start slow with domestic travel or select countries that are similar to where you live (from the United States to Canada, for example).

Choosing Your Destination Based on Budget

If you don’t have a destination in mind, Skyscanner , Kayak , and Google Flights can be great options to check first, especially if you’re on a budget. You can set your filters to give you the cheapest flights during your travel dates or a specific month. For example, on Google Flights , you can use the “explore” feature under “choosing destination” to keep an eye on average airfare from your home airport. Or, plug in your dates and check out the world map to see what flight costs are around the world. In fact, one of our contributors found flights to Spain from California for less than $500/ticket using this feature. Finally, regardless of which booking site you prefer, it’s always a good idea to book directly with the airline after completing your research and finding the fare. This will ensure you have all the cancellation and rebooking options possible.

Choosing Your Destination Based On Interest

Traveling is a great time to pursue a particular interest. Unsure of where you want to take your next trip? Search for an option that suits your family’s hobbies. If you have a Disney fan in your family, Disney World or Disneyland is an obvious choice. Or, enjoy culture in metropolises such as Paris or New York City . Outdoor enthusiasts may prefer a camping or RV vacation . Luckily, you don’t have to head far for these amazing outdoor experiences, especially if you want to visit a United States National Park . If your family wants to learn to swim, surf, or try water sports, then a beach or lake vacation will probably be a great option for you. Learn more about the land and who inhabits it with an animal encounter. Either way, expect some fun when you plan your family vacation ideas based on interest! 

No Destination in Mind

If you’re booking on a budget and not a destination, there are a few booking sites that can help you maximize your dollars. First, Skyscanner can help you set up parameters based on your dates to find the cheapest flights during that time. Google Flights can also help you do this. If you have a destination in mind, Airfarewatchdog can help you monitor flight prices and search for deals or a price drop. In addition, families can subscribe to sites like Scott’s Cheap Flights or Thrifty Traveler to get daily emails about flight drops, mistake fares, or cheap tickets around the world. Using sites like these is one of the best ways to travel with kids on a budget , but does require some flexibility.

Once you know your destination, you’ll want to get your documents in order. For domestic travel within the United States, kids do not need to have any special documents. Although, traveling with birth certificates may prove helpful if any questions arise. International travel with kids will require everyone to have a passport (including infants and toddlers). Some countries may also require certain documents, like proof of vaccinations or visas, depending on location and length of stay. Check the US State Department’s website for this information. When embarking on international travel with children, it is also advisable to register your travel plans through the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program , in case of emergency and to receive government updates regarding travel advisories and restrictions.

Secure Documents Well in Advance

It is worth noting that some documents can take months to assemble or may require travel to procure. For example, if your travel requires a visa, you will likely need to travel to the nearest visa-granting embassy and go through their approval process. This could require travel to a different city or state. Additionally, if you are getting a passport for your child for the first time, both parents need to be present when submitting the documents. Be sure to plan ahead and thoroughly read and understand what you need to apply for your necessary documents.  

Documents for Traveling Solo with Kids

If you are traveling without the other parent (whether you are married or not), you will want to ensure that you have a written document proving permission to travel with kids . Some countries may prefer or require that this document is notarized. It is up to border control agents to decide if your document passes their inspection (not airline staff). Generally, this document should include passport numbers, dates and locations of travel, phone numbers for both parents, a signature, etc. Finally, if you’re vacation planning for solo travel with kids, double-check local government websites to ensure you don’t need additional documents beyond this letter.

This is a big debate among travel families! Some families always travel with additional insurance coverage, while others sometimes or rarely do. Firstly, you’ll hear people talking about trip insurance and traveler’s insurance, but what’s the difference? Trip insurance is used to cover any financial loss related to your trip (like canceling or needing to leave early). Trip insurance can also be called “travelers’ assistance”. Travelers’ insurance (or, travel medical insurance), however, is used to protect people when traveling. Typically, it helps cover any medical attention needed while traveling. If you are on the fence about additional insurance, consider the cost of a hospital visit while traveling, medical attention you may need (is anyone in your family already high risk?), accidents that may happen, etc. Asking these kinds of questions will help you decide what’s right for your family. 

Where Do You Get Travel Insurance?

Before you purchase additional insurance, however, review your homeowners’ insurance, medical insurance, employer assistance programs, and credit cards, you may already have some coverage. You may also be able to add temporary coverage to your existing plans. Here’s How To Purchase Travel Insurance For Families . Many families choose to utilize a Travel Agent when planning a vacation . Travel Agents can be useful, especially if you are new to traveling, booking a cruise, or worried about the booking process. They can assist with all aspects of travel, or a certain portion of it (airfare, for example). Travel Agents can also specialize in certain kinds of travel, like luxury travel, Disney vacations, or international travel. Or, they can be generalists. They may or may not charge a fee for their services. You can find Travel Agents by searching Google, asking friends and family for referrals, or by crowdsourcing our Facebook group . Conversely, many families choose not to work with a Travel Agent, as they prefer to book everything on their own. Do your research about the process, fees, and potential cost savings (one way or another) before deciding what makes the most sense for your family.

Once it’s time to book your trip, there are several resources you can use to save money on airlines, hotels, rentals, and more. Keep reading for our parent-approved suggestions! 

If you’re looking for the best flight prices, there are many comparison sites you can use to plan your family vacation. Each has its own benefits, like how Kayak shows you various prices plus or minus certain days. Skyscanner is also great for comparing the prices of multiple flights since it lets you check by month, and plus or minus three days. Expedia helps you keep all your bookings in one place. A lot of parents also love Momondo , Hotwire , Cheapoair , Agoda , Kayak , Orbitz , and Priceline . You can also book flights directly through the airline’s website if you prefer to travel with a specific airline. This is a fantastic option if you have an airline credit card, which can help you accumulate points each time you travel. That way, you can save for future trips and get the most out of your travels! 

You will also want to consider whether a direct flight or a layover is better for your family and/or your destination. Many families prefer direct flights to ensure they don’t need to transfer luggage or kids between flights, while others appreciate the chance to stretch their legs and get organized. Some families even opt for overnight layovers to add another destination to their itinerary (think Iceland on the way to Germany, for example).

Note About Having an Infant-in-arms:

If you have an infant-in-arms (meaning a lap child, or a child under 2 who doesn’t purchase their own seat), you will still need to either put them on your ticket (domestic flight) or get their ticket attached to your own ticket (for an international flight). The best way to get your infant-in-arms documentation for a domestic or international flight is to call the airline to arrange it directly. You will need to pay some taxes on the infant ticket for international flights. It’s important to note that many families still prefer to purchase a seat for infants so that car seats can be used in-flight.

Car rentals.

If you’re taking a road trip with kids or are traveling somewhere that requires a car to get around, you’ll need to rent a car. Many car rental companies have desks within the airport or nearby. Firstly, check your existing credit card, AAA or other memberships, and employer to see if you have discounts or other benefits for car rentals. Then, check your car insurance to ensure it covers rental cars when you’re traveling. Rental car agencies also offer basic or enhanced car insurance options. Know what insurance you already have or may need in advance, desk agents are known for pushing the options through the rental agency. Likely, these are more expensive than your other options. Be sure you also have a valid license if you’re traveling abroad. We also recommend reading the rental and driving rules in the country you’ll be visiting. 

In addition, be sure to add the time it takes to get from your terminal to the car rental desks and move through the process to your travel time. This can often take much longer than expected. If you are traveling with more than one adult, this may be a good time for one to take the kids to get snacks, while the other waits in line.

Additionally, if you’re traveling to Europe, check Auto Europe Car Rental . Finally, most have car rental agencies also have loyalty programs, which means you’ll be able to save even more if you’re a frequent renter. 

Package Booking

Families looking for easy booking while vacation planning should consider the following booking sites. Families often use providers such as Expedia.com , Kiwi.com , Booking.com , Hotels.com , Kayak , Orbitz , and Priceline . Each site allows you to book accommodations and flights (and often other things like car rentals or experiences), meaning you can book all in one place and possibly receive a discount (price it out before booking). Plus, Hopper is a great option for booking from your mobile device.

Discount Travel Websites for Package Booking

Families seeking package deals when planning a vacation can also consider companies like Costco , Groupon , Rakuten Travel , or Secret Escapes to assist them in booking trips. These packages typically include flights, hotels, and maybe a few other perks such as cashback. Be sure to read the fine print before booking, however, to ensure it covers what you need and includes your local airport.

Family-friendly accommodations are an important part of traveling with kids , so be sure to do your research beforehand. Whether you want to stay in a boutique hotel, all-inclusive resort, or apartment-style accommodation, here’s what we suggest when planning a vacation .

If you’re looking to stay in a hotel during your family vacation, there are countless websites you can use to compare prices. Hotels.com is a popular one among parents, mostly due to its great membership program that includes a lot of perks. These vary from one free night for every ten you book to free cancellations, upgrades, and so much more. Some people also use Trivago or Booking.com . Whatever website you choose to book your hotel, be sure to check your loyalty program since it’s likely you can get some perks. Various hotel chains such as Marriott or Hilton also have their own loyalty or rewards programs, which are worth looking into if you’re a frequent guest. Make sure to sign up for any memberships if they’re available! Also, many hotel credit cards let you accumulate points and put them toward future travels. 

Home Rentals Or Homestays

If hotels aren’t your style, try a home rental instead. When traveling with children, the additional space and amenities provided by home-style accommodations can be very helpful. PRO TIP : Do your research before booking to ensure you understand what you are reserving, your kids meet age and height requirements, and that you are booking the correct days. Additionally, do some research about what activities or attractions need to be booked in advance, this will vary depending on site, peak tourist season, etc. Knowing in advance will ensure you don’t miss seeing the one or two things you’re really excited about!

• Generally : Spare garbage bags or large ziplock bags to assist with dirty laundry, diapers, or garbage on the airplane. Additionally, packing cubes or ziplock bags to compress and sort clothing for easier packing.
• For the Kids : Have kids pack their own small bags of toys and books. Toddlers and older kids can carry their own toys this way.
• For the Hotel : Binder clips or laundry pins to keep hotel curtains closed and keep the room dark in the mornings, to close chip bags, or as quick toys!
• Airline Travel : Pack a small carry-on filled with snacks and emergency supplies or toys for air travel, including empty sippies or bottles for juice, milk, water, etc. Plus extra clothes for kids and parents, in the event of a mess.
• Road Trips : Car charger for your phone and tablets, plenty of snacks, garbage bags, road trip games , a travel potty for little ones, pillows and blankets, audiobooks, paper towels, refillable water bottles, and reusable cutlery.

Make sure they know your full name, their full name, and a way of contacting you. Additionally, have the contact details for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate with you when traveling. 

Then, consider taking pictures of or scanning all of your documents, including passports, driver’s licenses, credit card phone numbers (and the back of your credit cards), health insurance cards, etc., and emailing them to yourself. Or, have a trusted friend or family member keep copies of these documents while you’re away. Having a digital copy of these documents can be helpful in case of emergency or in case they need to be replaced while you’re traveling.

Finally, you will also want to notify your bank and credit card company of your travel plans. This can ensure your accounts stay active and don’t trigger fraud alerts. Consider having a spare credit card or local cash on hand in case of emergencies, as well.

Going on a road trip with kids? Whether it’s a short or long car ride, you’ll want to keep little ones entertained during the process. Families embarking on a road trip with kids usually prefer apps like TripIt or Roadtrippers , which both may be particularly useful.

Having done our fair share of road trips with kids since becoming parents, I’m pleased to share this practical road trip plan so you can have the most successful road trip possible!  The idea is that it can be used as the basis for a road trip packing list for families.  (Rather than as a list of road trip essentials for couples without kids – look here for essentials for the perfect road trip !

These tips have been put together after doing long car rides with 3 children – from babies right up to double figures in age.  It’s fair to say that we’ve now perfected several strategies to make the trip as peaceful – and pain-free – as possible.  These are, therefore, our top travel hacks for kids on the road.

This comprehensive guide to road trip ideas for kids covers all the family road trip essentials that really work.  We cover how to plan the logistics of your trip, some road trip hacks for kids, and all the road trip essentials for kids you could ever need.

Why Take a Road Trip with Kids?

Life has changed.  In all likelihood, we’ll never go back to the same way of life that was the norm before the pandemic.  Booking a flight is currently less reliable, and if you do make it onto the plane you may potentially expose yourself to viruses and the like.  Hence this road trip with kids packing list.

Long car trips across the country are growing in popularity, as we all think of the world – and travel, differently.  Plus. as I’ll mention a few times through this post, attitude is everything.  Taking road trips as a family can be a lot of fun, as long as you approach it in the right way.  There are fun things to do on a road trip with your family.  Honestly!

Our Own Road Trips with Kids Experience

We live in Australia, so I think it’s fair to say ‘nuff said.  The distances we need to cover are huge.  So from the very first time the children are driven home from the hospital they had to get used to spending a lot of time in the car.  This is why we need a road trip with kids checklist!

During most school holidays, we’ll take a road trip lasting between 3 and 8 hours just to get to our destination.  Plus the same when we return home.  In fact, I’d go as far as to say we are experts on road tripping with kids.  Better still, every road trip we take means learning new things or changing the plan – and isn’t that what parenting is all about?

Top Tips for Road Trip Essentials with Kids

Car trips can mean spending quality time with kids.

Discovering the idea that car trips could be fun was a game-changer for me.  Instead of seeing road trips as an endless waste of time – or test of endurance – I now view it as a special period of time dedicated to spending precious time with the children.

This is especially true once they get a little older.  You can converse with them, ponder different points, and generally explore those topics that we don’t ever see to have time for at home.  Guys – when it comes to road trips with kids, attitude is everything !  Before you tick off that road trip packing list for kids, try to get into the right mindset.  Here are some tips for doing just that.

Planning your Road Trip is Crucial

Having a plan for your family road trip is vital.  As a rule of thumb, we stop every two hours for toilets breaks, as well as for the sake of the kids’ attention spans.  If I know the route in advance, or I’ve driven it before, I plan the ideal stops.  If I’m not familiar with the route, I use Google to find playgrounds and picnic areas.  Speaking of playgrounds, if your road trip goes thru Perth, make sure you check out our  Perth Playgrounds And Parks In Perth post.  Here you can find the best playgrounds in Perth for your kiddos.

The younger the children are, the more frequent the stops must be.  A road trip with young children thus takes longer.  Toddlers do really need a break every two hours, while for children aged 4 plus you can increase the time between stops to three hours.

Plan for Daytime Naps

If you have children who still sleep during the day, make sure your road trip plan takes that into account.  There’s nothing worse than stopping for a break and having to wake up a peacefully sleeping child!

When planning for their daytime sleep in the car make sure you take the familiar things they use at home, as well as perhaps a neck pillow.

• Their favorite cuddly toy
• Their comfort blanket
• A bottle of milk, pacifier, or dummy
• Soothing music.  I also play some lullabies via the car’s sound system and ask the other kids to close their eyes – or at least stay quiet – until the toddler goes to sleep!
• A neck pillow .  These can make the child more comfortable, and therefore more likely to sleep soundly for a while.
• If travelling in cold regions,  consider car seat foot muffs to make sure your little one is war enough!

Be Willing to Throw the Plan Out

Having a plan is crucial.  But it’s just as important to be open-minded.  Try to achieve a flexible mindset, so that if you see the plan is not working you can switch things up.

Let the Plan Go, and Have Fun

Road trips with kids are fun – I promise!  If you spot an awesome playground from the road, then why not pull over, and let the children have a bit of fun?

If we plan ahead  OR allow a whole day for the trip – then there’s no reason not to stop.  You can all enjoy a bit of outdoor recreation along the way, even though it will take longer to get to your destination.

This is precisely why we include a whole list of possible activities for those roadside stops.  If the kids are fighting in the back, and won’t stop the bickering, then why not get them out so they can throw a ball around?  In my experience, this really works, because you need two people to throw and catch.  Usually, this will therefore get them talking and on good terms once again.  If not, the driver (aka Mumma) will at least get a good wake-up and break from the endless hours of driving!

Expect the Unexpected

Vomiting, spilled drinks, or even those ad hoc stops because we spotted a great playground.  We look at the expected driving time from point A to point B and then allow an extra 30 minutes per break as a minimum.  Or at least an extra hour, maybe two.

Trust me, road trips with kids are so much more successful when the parents are not stressed.  So do include fun things to do on a road trip on your list – and you will get there – eventually !

Are We There Yet?

If there’s one question designed to drive a parent mad on a road trip, it’s the classic “ are we there yet”?  For older, more literate kids, we teach them to spot the road markers for the next town so that they’re looking out of the window.  Keeping their mind occupied while looking for the next road marker teaches them to answer the question for themselves.  For preliterate children, we set them the task of looking for landmarks instead.

For example: “When we see the bridge, it’s going to be half an hour more”, “When we see the tower, it’s going to be 20 minutes more” and “When we see the funny tree that’s leaning over the road, it’s going to be five kilometers more”.  The success of this approach will, of course, depend on the age of the child.

Car Sickness in Kids (Motion Sickness)

If you have a child who tends to suffer from motion sickness during road trips, then you will need to do even more planning.  You can try a Sea-Band in a kids’ size – it does work for us. For dealing with motion sickness in kids, Sea-Bands are always on our road trip list of essentials. Here are some more ideas of how to avoid motion sickness when travelling .

Other great items to have to hand include a change of clothes and a sick bucket (we use an old ice cream container or a bucket ).  You can also buy disposable vomit bags .  I personally prefer the bucket as you can throw out the contents as it happens, whereas with vomit bags you need to carry them until you can find a bin!

Two of my other hints for avoiding motion sickness in kids are:

• Drive really slowly
• Stop very frequently

In-Car First Aid

A travel first aid kit is ideal for packing in the car – you may well need one at some point during your vacation, as well as the journey itself.  Most families need plasters, at least, on a fairly regular basis!

Solo Road Trips

There is a big difference between taking solo road trips versus having – or being – a co-pilot.  The main difference is that when you are in sole charge, you need to be super organized.

For example, keep snack and lunch boxes close to the kids, opt for easy-open containers, and offer a range of activities within their reach. If there is another driver, you can get away with being a little less organized, and it can be much easier to manage.

Sometimes when you are driving solo, you will just have to stop when any problems need sorting out.  You may also need to consider what to bring on a road trip for kids even more carefully, so they can get on with things more independently.

Night Driving

Some solo parents report that nighttime driving works best.  They head off close to the children’s usual bedtime, then drive into the night.  I rarely do this, though, because I tend to get sleepy myself.  In Australia there is also a lot of wildlife on the roads, meaning you have to go slower than during the day.

How about Technology when Road Tripping with Kids?

We’ve made a conscious effort to reduce screen use, as we described in  Can We Go Screen Free On A 3 Hour Flight?   Yes – screens are pretty much a guaranteed way of keeping the kids quiet on a road trip – yet it seems like a lost opportunity for connection, sharing stories, and taking part in other enjoyable activities!  That’s right: road tripping with kids can be fun.

But yes, if all else fails an iPad will work.  Believe me, if you hit a traffic jam at the end of a 7-hour road trip, you will be glad you kept the tech for an ‘emergency’.  In general, I, therefore, keep the technology in reserve for later use, when it might be ‘really’ needed.

As a solo mum of 3 kids of different ages, each of my children does have their own iPad .  However, I do still encourage them to watch at least one movie together, using the headphone splitter .  Sometimes I even have the volume go through the car’s Bluetooth system, so I can listen in too.

Philosophically, I do often wonder about our children and their lack of ability to share or compromise.  While it would often be easier to let them do their own thing on an iPad, I still try to encourage some collaboration!

Nowadays, it’s rare for kids to use a whole iPad battery, but during a long day of driving (like 12 hours), it can happen.  We do keep one charger in the car, but another useful option is a battery pack .

Activity Road Trip Tips for Families

These tips can work for toddlers, pre-schoolers… and even picky tweens!  In terms of road trip activities for kids of all ages, the following have always worked for us.

Nothing beats a good old-fashioned sing-along to pass the time on a family road trip!  That doesn’t have to mean ‘Bananas in Pajamas’ the whole way.  It can be Abba, the Beatles, or anything I like to pelt out at the top of my lungs.  I’ve decided that road trips are about educating my children in classical music.  By classical music, I mean the likes of Abba, the Beatles, and Elvis Presley.  Or – what about the 1984 “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”!

Songs that have clear words, a good beat, and can get everybody moving work best.  With singalongs and music, you can take turns choosing, so everybody gets to pick a song.  With older kids, you also put a child in charge of the music, so that the driver doesn’t need to be distracted.

Anything with a catchy tune works for road trip singalongs.  Unfortunately, my kids voted for Barbie Girl, consistently, for a whole trip ☹  “ I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world” Another time it was Gangnam Style – go figure how they sung to that!

Storytelling

Storytelling is an excellent way to develop kids’ language and writing skills.  It is also another way to enjoy road tripping with kids, and pass the time.

When planning a road trip for kids, there is so much great information and a lot of books out there on the art of storytelling.  One book, in particular, that we love and found totally inspiring is Getting Children Writing Story Ideas For Children 3-11  by Simon Brownhill. Highly recommended!

The thing I found particularly inspiring about this book was that the author is great at explaining the art of storytelling, as well as how to teach and pass that on to your children. This book is definitely worth a read, providing endless inspiration when brainstorming road tripping with kids’ ideas. When children start school, a pre-writing phase is the ability to tell a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end.  If you can teach this structure during your travel storytelling, it will give them a head start in the classroom.

Traditional Books

Some parents like to trade with their kids when it comes to reading versus technology.  For example, you could make them read for a set period of time before allowing them to use an iPad.  Just be aware that reading can make travel sickness worse, so you might want to make sure they’re wearing those Sea-Bands before they begin.  Or, you could try audiobooks instead.

Talking Books

In our experience, a talking or audiobook is good for children aged 4 and over.  Any younger than that, you’ll need a book with pictures, so they’ll want to turn the pages themselves. Otherwise, it’s hard for them to visualize and follow the story. Here are more ideas for audiobooks for family road trips. 

Kids’ Road Trip Activity Packs

If you are driving solo, it’s best to pack individual activity bags that are easily accessible for the child.  Here are some fun things to pack for a road trip with kids.  Taking their own backpack each is ideal for this purpose, as you can pack it with all the things they’ll need.  It also gives children a sense of responsibility.  You can also read our dedicated post on The Best Kids’ Travel Backpacks here .

• Stickers, stickers and more stickers .  From age two and up, stickers are the best thing for keeping kids busy.  There are great age-appropriate sticker books that you can buy: the main thing is to make sure they can get the stickers off the page by themselves.  We really rate the range of Melissa and Doug sticker books .  These window stickers  are also good fun – and don’t worry, they do come off easily!
• Colouring and drawing books are also good, but not so great on rough roads.  Again, you need to think about your trip, and how to manage the children.  Pencils and crayons get lost, so those magnetic boards with pens attached can be a better choice.
• Pipe cleaners are cheap and easy to play with, and can use up some time!
• If, like me, you have a Lego fanatic, pack a deep baking tray (or similar large flat tray) that can contain the Lego pieces during the long drive.  Listed below are some of our favorite Lego sets, which are ideal when you’re wondering how to entertain a child on a long car ride.  Lego is definitely a favorite among road trip hacks for kids!
• Lego Classic Medium Creative Brick Box .  This one has 484 pieces, and best of all it comes with a brick-shaped yellow storage box.  This is ideal for keeping on the kids’ laps, so they can get creative while you drive.
• Lego Classic Large Creative Brick Box .  Like the one above, but with 790 pieces and an even deeper box!  This is our favorite, as more bricks equal more entertainment.  Plus the depth makes it easier to contain the pieces within the included box.
• Lego Classic Creative Brick Box .   This is the smallest of the three, with 221 pieces and a square-shaped storage box.
• Lego Classic Creative Suitcase .  With 213 pieces, this set comes in a handy suitcase with a carry handle.  Again, ideal for kids’ laps, and the handle makes it really easy for them to grab.
• Lego Classic 1500 Piece Brick Set .  Just as it says on the box, this one contains 1500 bricks in all colors and sizes.
• Lego Duplo Classic Brick Box .  These chunkier bricks are designed for smaller hands, so they’re ideal for kids aged 18 months or over.  This one comes with a green storage box and contains 65 pieces.
• Lego Duplo Deluxe Brick Box .  This one has 85 pieces and a deeper storage box and is again ideal for younger kids.

Food for your Road Trip Packing List with Kids

I do know parents who are against letting their kids eat in the car because they make a mess.  This is true – but it also passes the time on a road trip brilliantly.  For me, it’s definitely on the family road trip essentials list.  Hence our detailed information   The Best Road Trip Foods: Awesome Kid Snacks for Road Trips

Before departing, do have your snack bags organized, as they need to be packed ahead of time.  Take into account what little fingers can open by themselves, and what might end up spilled all over the floor.  Divided bento boxes that can be placed on little laps are ideal.

When the road trip is over, it is always a mission to spend time cleaning up and vacuuming the car, so think about what’s the easiest and least messy food to eat in the car.  If you are on a solo road trip, a well-thought-out snack bag is a particularly vital part of your family road trip checklist.

You will also need water bottles , which can be re-filled when you stop for those rest breaks.

A Road Trip Packing List for Families by Age

We all go on vacation to have a good time, right?  So here are the things to bring on a road trip for fun, sorted by the age of your child or children.  Do check all the quick-reference lists for ideas, as many are interchangeable between age groups! These are the top road trip essentials for kids by age group.

What to Take on a Road Trip for Toddlers

A packing list for road trips with toddlers must bear in mind their short attention span and what they can do by themselves.  You may also need to factor napping into the equation!  As mentioned above, essentials for road trips with little kids include their usual comforts like a pacifier or dummy, comfort blanket, cuddly toy, and perhaps lullabies too.

Things to pack for your trip include toys and activities for little hands.  You can see some more ideas on our post in Brilliant Toddler Plane Activities , but here are a few to get you started.

• Magnet Sets . These are ideal for keeping little hands busy – and as they stick together, they don’t easily escape out of reach or roll all over the car!
• Wikki Stix . These clever, colourful wax craft sticks are ideal for keeping young crafters occupied.
• Lego Duplo . With bigger bricks, Lego Duplo provides perfect in-car entertainment for small fingers.
• As detailed above, you can choose between window stickers and sticker books for kids.  Or why not include both in your road trip pack?
• 3D pin art board . These inexpensive toys are great fun for little ones to get stuck into!

Road Trip Activities for Kids

A kids’ road trip for children around school age has its own challenges.  Their active, enquiring minds need lots to keep them occupied.  Getting ready for a road trip with kids who can do things for themselves means having lots that they can do independently.

A mix of activities should be included on your list of road trip essentials with kids.  Such as paper or audiobooks, Lego, and drawing boards.

• Lego . See the list above, under ‘kids’ road trip activity packs’, for a list of our favourite family sets.
• Magnetic drawing boards . These allow kids to draw in the car, without pencils rolling around or worrying about making mistakes due to movement.
• A portable DVD player .  This allows kids, toddlers, and tweens to watch a movie together.
• Headphone splitter . They’ll need this if watching a movie together on one screen!
• Fire for Kids .  Amazon’s own kids’ tablet is much cheaper than an iPad, and thus ideal for kids to get started with.  They also come complete with a chunky, rubbery protective case.

Things to Bring on a Road Trip for Tweens

What to bring for a road trip with older kids who aren’t yet teens? Here are a few age-appropriate suggestions, as well as those above aimed at kids in general.

• Travel journal .  While the car may not be the best place to write in it, they could make rough notes or glue in little keepsakes.  The younger kids could maybe decorate a page with stickers, keeping them busy for a while too.  If the tween will let them, that is!
• National Parks passport .  These are ideal to include on a road trip with kids in the US, instead of or as well as a journal.
• Travel games .  There are travel versions of lots of popular kids’ games to keep them busy while on the road. Uno, Connect 4, or Battleship are classic examples.

Fun Road Trip Essentials for Teens

So what to pack for a road trip with teens?  While they are old enough to make their own minds up, they may also need some prompting from you if you want to keep them happy for the whole journey. Tech like an iPad or smartphone is a given, but what else can you provide?

If it’s tech they’re into, how about a Kindle so they can read books on a device, for example?  When they have younger siblings, it’s also a good idea to make them responsible for keeping the younger kids entertained for some of the time, by reading to them, singing with them, making sticker pictures together, telling them stories, or constructing Lego.  Their reward could always be a stint on the iPad they’re so keen to get their hands on!

• iPad .  You know they can’t live without it – you can always action screen time or use it as a reward.
• Kindle .  As savvy parents know, it’s a cool way to read books while traveling.
• Car games . Teens are old enough to lead the family in an in-car road trip game like ‘Radical Road Trip’ or ‘Our Moments’, which can result in some in-depth discussions!

What to Pack on a Trip for Stops

Don’t forget about what to do when you do stop for a rest break at the play park – or wherever you can.  Here are some ideas about what to keep the kids amused while you all stretch your legs.

• Aerobie . We do love these flying discs. A modern take on the traditional frisbee but so much better!
• Bubbles . Cheap, easy and compact to carry, and lots of fun.  What’s not to love?  Keep them out of reach during the actual journey, though!
• Skipping rope . You never know, enough jumping around and the kids might just get very sleepy for the next leg of the journey.
• Toss and catch . These sets comprise two velcro-covered discs and a tennis-type ball and are great to play with during quick pitstops en route.

I’ve got a friend who drives 36 hours across Australia twice a year in 3-day stints with 3 children by HERSELF.   Talk about experience with travel hacks for kids.  She is amazing, and if she reads this she knows I am talking about her.  Next year she is going to do the trip 4 times.  Yes, you read that – one perfectly sane, though superwoman-like, woman is going to voluntarily drive 144 hours with children in some mega road trips.  I asked her the other day for her road trip hacks for kids and her suggestions are the same as mine!

Ollie & Moon

Justin Time is a canadian animated show about a kid named Justin and his friends Olive and Squidgy.  Justin Time is a little different than the others on this list because it is based off of Justin and his friends using their imagination to see the world.  They head off on their around the world imaginary adventures to discover different locations and learn valuable lessons along their way.   Imagination play is a wonderful tool that kids can use anytime in their life.  You can play make-believe with Justin, Olive, and Squidgy on Netflix, Amazon Prime , and YouTube.

This is such a cute post!!!! I don’t have any kids so I’ll be sharing this with my friends that have children!

There are some in here I’ve never heard of – we’ll have to check them out. We’ve always been fans of Wild Kratts and Little Einsteins in our house. My daughter loves Dora the Explorer, too. Great list – thanks!

Super Wings is a favorite in my household! Watching episodes of places we’ve been such a fun way to remember a trip afterwards, too.

Interesting! We don’t really watch TV in our house (though hubby and I sometimes stream on Netflix or Amazon after the girls are in bed), but my kids sometimes watch Wild Kratts with friends, so I bet they’d like some of these others that are available through streaming, too.

These sounds like great travel books for kids. I would love to get Let’s Go Luna for my niece.

I really love inspirational movies/videos. My younger one loves Wild Kratts. Mouk sounds very interesting.

Those are all shows that I enjoy watching as much as my kids. I love all of them.

What a great idea to get your kids excited about travel… I haven’t heard of any of these shows but they sound like fun!

My boys love Super Wings and Wild Kratts! I’ll have to try a few others. Let’s Go Luna sounds really cute, too!

Louis Cole initially started out enthralling (and grossing out) viewers with his adventurous ability to eat every odd delicacy that was dead or alive.

Today, this U.K. travel vlogger has taken to daily vlogs of his life, inspiring viewers to live the adventure while travelling the world.

A well-loved travel vlog hero of YouTube, not only does he make binge-watching addictive, but he incorporates 360-degree video and has his fans introduce his videos.

2. Mr Ben Brown

Mr. Ben Brown is mostly known as a YouTube vlogger. But he travels a bit and his Visual Vibes series showcases some seriously stunning travel cinematography, which will leave you breathless.

Kristin Sarah merges her acting chops with her love for travel in Hopscotch the Globe .

She’s like that fun travel bestie who’s not afraid to be a little silly. Her channel incorporates vlogging with cultural parodies and travel inspired DIY recipes.

If you love Asian food, Trevor is The Food Ranger of Asia. An expat in Sichuan, China, he chomps and slurps some of the best Chinese cuisine (and uh, some pretty obscure foods too).

Commendable is his ability to upload regular videos while staying under China’s banned radar (YouTube and Google are banned in China).

He’s quickly growing a following as a new foodie channel to watch.

Like all lists, people will wonder why they’re not on it. I’m positive I missed some good ones, but this is very loose criteria I’d be using if I were hired to cast, produce or pitch a TV show. Creators did not need to meet all criteria, but most. – Programming: Weekly dedication, quality, storytelling & individual style execution – Audience: Niche, loyalty, & YouTube friendly – Blog worthy and/or binge worthy – Does it bring a new spin to the term “travel video” or “travel show” – Channel Personality/Talent: brand recognition, hosting & entertainment value

YouTube’s popular “ Tab Time ” series, starring “America’s mom” and Emmy-winning host Tabitha Brown, just got bigger.

Brown and creative studio Kids at Play have announced the launch of the “Tab Time World” app plus an all-new children’s book series and online shop as an expansion of the Emmy-winning young children’s series “Tab Time,” co-created by Brown and Kids at Play founder Jason Berger.

The eBooks and App, developed in partnership with Google Kids Space, will be available for free exclusively on Google Kids Space and Google Play for a limited time. Additionally, the books will be available in the “Tab Time World” app and everywhere eBooks are sold. “‘Tab Time’ is special to so many of us and expanding keeps our hearts and minds open for love to grow! Parents and kids love smart devices and to give them self-love and learning tools from ‘Tab Time’ in books and apps was in perfect alignment,” Brown says of the new offerings. “I’m excited for families to get to experience it all together! The more we gather with learning and love, the better the world will be! That’s what ‘Tab Time’ is all about and that makes me so excited.”

Brown narrates the new interactive comic picture series, which was written by “Tab Time” showrunner Sean Presant and illustrated by “Tab Time” animator Michael Scanlon. The first two books in the series are “Avi to the Rescue” and “Lenny and the Truck-Driving Dinosaurs,” each based on characters from the hybrid live-action/animated series.

Brown notes that upcoming stories in the book series will follow episodes from the YouTube series.

“The stories will piggyback off the episodes. Like when we feel afraid, or when we make a mistake, that’s really an oops-ortunity. We’re helping kids give themselves space and time to grow, learn, respect and love themselves and others,” she says.

Additionally, the show has launched an official store on  shop.tabtime.tv , featuring “Tab Time” themed backpacks, shirts, hoodies, hats, bibs, onesies, sippy cups, blankets, bags and more.

“The shop is really a response to demand. When we first launched ‘Tab Time,’ parents and kids were creating their own amazing  DIY-style costumes and such. So, with the shop, we are providing an official source with quality materials and fun artwork for parents and kids who want to bring the digital world of ‘Tab Time’ to their physical reality,” Berger says.

Your last-minute guide to Monday's total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse will cross North America on Monday , offering millions a rare opportunity to see afternoon skies temporarily darken as the moon blocks the face of the sun.

Tune into NBC News NOW as Lester Holt hosts a two-hour special at 2 p.m. ET Monday from Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The eclipse's path fortuitously cuts across Mexico, 15 U.S. states and a small part of eastern Canada. In all other states in the continental U.S., viewers will be treated to a partial solar eclipse, with the moon appearing to take a bite out of the sun and obscuring part of its light.

Here’s everything you need to know about the rare celestial event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Solar eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth align. The moon passes between Earth and sun, temporarily blocking the sun’s light and casting a shadow on Earth.

A total solar eclipse is when the moon fully obscures the sun, whereas a partial solar eclipse means it blocks just a portion of the sun’s face.

Solar eclipses occur only with the new moon. Because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted, the three bodies don’t always line up in a way that creates an eclipse.

“Imagine if the moon’s orbit were in the plane of Earth’s orbit around the sun — if that were the case, then every new moon, you’d have a total solar eclipse and every full moon, you’d have a lunar eclipse,” Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, told NBC News. “So, because things don’t always align, it lends to the rarity of the event and the specialness of the event.”

Where and when will the eclipse be visible?

This year’s eclipse will follow a slightly wider path over more populated areas of the continental U.S. than other total solar eclipses have in the recent past.

NASA estimates that 31.6 million people live within what’s known as the path of totality, where the total solar eclipse will be visible. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path, according to the agency.

The path travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Tiny parts of Michigan and Tennessee will also be able to witness totality if conditions are clear.

After the eclipse crosses into Canada, it will pass over southern Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton, at the eastern end of Nova Scotia.

Those outside the path of totality can still take part in the astronomical event by viewing a partial solar eclipse — visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous U.S. — or a NASA livestream.

The timing, including how long totality lasts, depends on the location, but some spots will see the moon fully cover the sun for up to 4 minutes and 28 seconds.

Below is a list of timings for some cities along the path of totality, as  provided by NASA . A number of other resources, including NationalEclipse.com  and  TimeandDate.com , can also help people plan.

• Dallas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:23 p.m. CT and totality at 1:40 p.m.
• Little Rock, Arkansas: Partial eclipse begins at 12:33 p.m. CT and totality at 1:51 p.m.
• Cleveland: Partial eclipse begins at 1:59 p.m. ET and totality at 3:13 p.m.
• Buffalo, New York: Partial eclipse begins at 2:04 p.m. ET and totality at 3:18 p.m.
• Lancaster, New Hampshire: Partial eclipse begins at 2:16 p.m. ET and totality at 3:27 p.m.

How to safely view a solar eclipse

It is never safe to gaze directly at the sun, even when it is partly or mostly covered by the moon. Special eclipse glasses or  pinhole projectors  are required to safely view solar eclipses and prevent eye damage. Failing to take the proper precautions can result in severe eye injury,  according to NASA .

Eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than normal sunglasses and specially made to enable wearers to look at the sun during these kinds of celestial events.

Sky-watchers should also never view any part of the sun through binoculars, telescopes or camera lenses unless they have specific solar filters attached. Eclipse glasses should not be used with these devices, as they will not provide adequate protection.

However, during the few minutes of totality, when the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to look with the naked eye.

Beware of fake eclipse glasses. On legitimate pairs, the lenses should have a silver appearance on the front and be black on the inside. The manufacturer’s name and address should be clearly labeled, and they should not be torn or punctured. Check, as well, for the ISO logo and the code “IS 12312-2” printed on the inside.

If you don’t have eclipse glasses, you can make a homemade pinhole projector, which lets sunlight in through a small hole, focuses it and projects it onto a piece of paper, wall or other surface to create an image of the sun that is safe to look at. 

All you need is two pieces of white cardboard or plain white paper, aluminum foil and a pin or thumbtack. Cut a 1- to 2-inch square or rectangle out of the center of a piece of white paper or cardboard. Tape aluminum foil over that cut-out shape, then use a pin or thumbtack to poke a tiny hole in the foil.

During the eclipse, place a second piece of white paper or cardboard on the ground as a screen and hold the projector with the foil facing up and your back to the sun. Adjusting how far you hold the projector from the second piece of paper will alter the size of the image on the makeshift screen.

What to look for while viewing the total solar eclipse

For people along the path of totality, there are some fun milestones to keep track of as the total solar eclipse unfolds.

As the eclipse progresses and the sun gets thinner in the sky, it will start to get eerily dark, according to Tyson.

When the last beams of sunlight are about to become obscured, look out for the “diamond ring effect”: The sun’s atmosphere will appear as an illuminated halo, and the last light still visible will look like the diamond of a giant ring.

As the sunlight decreases even further, an effect known as Baily’s beads will be created by the moon’s rugged terrain. Tiny “beads” of light will be visible for only a few seconds around the dark moon, as the last bits of sunlight peer through the moon’s mountains and valleys.

When the moon is fully blocking the sun, it is safe to remove eclipse glasses and look at the total solar eclipse with the naked eye.

Some lucky sky-watchers may even catch a glimpse of a comet .

Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks — nicknamed the “ devil comet ” because an eruption last year left it with two distinct trails of gas and ice in the shape of devil horns — is currently visible from the Northern Hemisphere as it swings through the inner solar system.

The comet can be seen in the early evenings by gazing toward the west-northwest horizon. During the eclipse, when skies darken during totality, it may be possible to see the comet near Jupiter, but its visibility will depend on whether it’s in the middle of an outburst and thus brighter than normal.

Most likely, all eyes will be on the alignment of the moon and sun.

“Most people won’t even notice,” Tyson said. “But if you know to look, it’s there.”

When is the next solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse will be in 2026, but it will mostly pass over the Arctic Ocean, with some visibility in Greenland, Iceland, Portugal and northern Spain. In 2027, a total solar eclipse will be visible in Spain and a swath of northern Africa.

The next total solar eclipse visible from North America will be in 2033, but only over Alaska. Then in 2044, a total solar eclipse will cross Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, parts of Canada and Greenland.

The next total solar eclipse to cross the continental U.S. coast-to-coast in will occur in 2045. The path of totality for that eclipse will cut through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Texas mother arrested after allegedly leaving young children alone to take a cruise

A Texas woman was arrested after allegedly leaving her children at home alone to take a cruise.

Lakesha Woods Williams, 29, left her 8-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter by themselves in their Houston apartment to go on vacation on April 4, according to a criminal complaint.

She is charged with abandoning a child with intent to return.

Deputies with the Harris County Constable’s Office made a wellness check on Tuesday following a call for service. A witness told them that neighbors in the complex were concerned about the safety of two kids left on their own in one of the units. The witness said other residents had seen Williams leaving with bags and luggage and did not see her come back.

“The apartment was in complete disarray and had trash and left-over food all over the unit,” the document said. There was a “very potent smell of urine” inside as well.

“No adults were present supervising the juveniles, and none appeared to have been present since the Defendant’s departure,” the document continued. Deputies also found a camera in the apartment that Williams used to watch and talk to the kids during her trip, and her son had a phone he used to text her.

The document did not specify which cruise line Williams sailed with or where she went. “Deputies tried contacting the Defendant to make the scene, but she was not cooperating and was switching up her story on her whereabouts,” the document said.

The Houston Fire Department was called to ensure the children “were in good health and not malnourished,” and Child Protective Services reported to the scene before releasing the children to their aunt.

An attorney for Williams was not listed.

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.
