Punto di riferimento nel segmento dei grandi monovolume, il nuovo Lancia Voyager è lungo 5,22 metri, largo 2 m, alto 1.82 m e con un passo di 3,08 metri. Dimensioni importanti che trovano un corrispettivo nell'ampio e raffinato abitacolo che si contraddistingue per qualità dei materiali e cura dei dettagli, da sempre una peculiarità del marchio Lancia, come dimostrano i sedili rivestiti in pelle di alta qualità, oltre al volante riscaldato e al pomello del cambio anch'essi rivestiti in pelle.

Un abitacolo elegante ed esclusivo, ovattato e confortevole. Merito dell'eccellente livello di silenziosità raggiunto grazie ad un'attenta progettazione che limita  il  rumore, le vibrazioni, oltre all'impiego di nuovi pannelli acustici e silenziatori in tutto il veicolo.

In un mondo ideale lo spazio torna ad essere un elemento plasmabile nelle mani dell'uomo, attraverso semplici gesti intuitivi: l'esclusivo Stow 'n Go ® è il sistema brevettato da Chrysler che permette di ricavare tutto lo spazio necessario per i passeggeri ed i loro bagagli, senza necessità di rimuovere i sedili. Questo innovativo sistema di configurazione prevede sedili ribaltabili che possono essere ripiegati a scomparsa nel pianale per trasformare, con la massima facilità, i cinque comodi posti a sedere della seconda e terza fila in un'ampia superficie di carico adatta a qualsiasi esigenza di viaggio o lavoro. Inoltre, mantenendo i sedili in posizione eretta, gli scomparti nel pianale possono essere utilizzati come pratici vani portaoggetti.

Ulteriori peculiarità del nuovo modello Lancia sono l'attrezzatissima Super Console che include due  prese di corrente da 12 volt, pratici portabicchieri e vani portaoggetti, oltre alla suggestiva illuminazione diffusa dai LED orientabili, posti sulla console superiore, che regalano un'atmosfera da vero e proprio  jet executive. E sempre all'insegna della massima versatilità, la nuova vettura propone porte e portellone scorrevoli a comando elettrico con sistema di rilevamento di eventuali ostacoli che venissero a trovarsi durante la chiusura.

Sinonimo di scelta senza compromessi, per chi lo guida, ma anche per chi ha il piacere di viverlo come passeggero, Lancia Voyager offre il sofisticato sistema multimediale di intrattenimento Uconnect® con Radio/CD/DVD/MP3/WMA, porta USB, ingresso AUX, hard-disk da 30GB, schermo touch-screen, dispositivo UConnect® con microfono incorporato nel retrovisore interno a comando vocale e Bluetooth®. Su richiesta è disponibile il pack Techno che comprende:

 UConnect® GPS che aggiunge la navigazione satellitare a mappe dall'alto in 2D e 3D ed indicazioni progressive sul percorso, il sistema ParkView TM con telecamera posteriore per la visione degli ostacoli durante le manovre di parcheggio ed i fari bi-xenon con lavafari.

Completano l'esperienza di viaggio a bordo del Lancia Voyager il sistema di intrattenimento posteriore con lettore DVD a doppio schermo LCD per i passeggeri della seconda e terza fila. Quest'ultimo dispositivo consente la riproduzione di due diversi supporti multimediali contemporaneamente - a scelta tra molteplici sorgenti (radio, hard disk, ingresso AUX, porta USB, due ingressi RGB e due lettori DVD) - sui due schermi LCD da 9" dotati di telecomando e di cuffie wireless a due canali. Inoltre le lampade a LED orientabili a padiglione, dal design d'ispirazione aeronautica, permettono di indirizzare la luce solo dove richiesto.

Design e comfort non sono gli unici punti di forza di Voyager. L'MPV Lancia propone due motori Euro5 che esaltano la dimensione del viaggio offrendo tecnica e prestazioni al servizio del massimo comfort. Ecco allora il brillante Diesel 2.8L 4 cilindri con filtro antiparticolato di serie che eroga una potenza di 163 CV e una coppia di 360 Nm, mantenendo i consumi pari a 7.9l/100 km nel ciclo misto e le emissioni di CO 2 a 207 g/km.

Il secondo propulsore in gamma è il benzina di 3'604 cc, sei cilindri a V disposti a 60°, che eroga una potenza di 283 CV. Performance esaltanti a fronte di consumi che si attestano a 10.8l/100 km nel ciclo misto. Entrambi i motori sono abbinati ad un cambio automatico a 6 marce.

Il nuovo Lancia Voyager è all'avanguardia anche nei contenuti di sicurezza come dimostrano gli airbag frontali Next Generation (entrambi multi-stage), gli airbag laterali a tendina sulle tre file di sedili e gli airbag laterali per spalle e torace per la prima fila. Inoltre, è disponibile il sistema di assistenza al parcheggio ParkSense ® che può essere dotato anche di ParkView ® ,  una telecamera che proietta sullo schermo una visione precisa di ciò che si trova dietro il veicolo durante la guida in retromarcia.

Commercializzata a partire dal mese di ottobre in tutta Europa, Lancia Voyager è l'automobile giusta per un pubblico dinamico e attento alla tecnologia più sofisticata. In Svizzera, la gamma propone al lancio un solo e ricchissimo allestimento (Gold), due motorizzazioni (il potente motore benzina 3.6 da 283 CV Euro5 e il brillante diesel 2.8L da 163 CV Euro5), quattro colori di carrozzeria ( Brilliant Black, Carbon Grey, Silver, Stone White) ed una variante per gli interni (nero/grigio). Completano le dotazioni di serie del nuovo modello: cerchi in lega da 17" diamantati, barre portatutto nere, sedili rivestiti in pelle di alta qualità, volante con comandi audio e pomello del cambio anch'essi rifiniti in pelle , ESP, 6 airbag, cruise control, fendinebbia, proiettori automatici, protezione attiva pedoni, climatizzatore automatico tri-zona, radio con lettore CD a sei altoparlanti, sistema U-Connect® vivavoce con I-pod/Mp3, specchietti elettrici riscaldati, porte laterali e portellone posteriore a comando elettrico. In Svizzera della dotazione di serie fanno inoltre parte gli ammortizzatori autolivellanti posteriori, il sistema Keyless-Enter-N-Go che permette l'accesso alla vettura e l'avvio del motore senza chiave, i sensori pioggia e luce e le maniglie delle porte cromate.

Come i piloti della Voyager sono abituati ad avere, la Lancia Voyager dispone anche di una garanzia triennale e del pacchetto assistenziale Swiss Free 10 anni o 100.000 km (esclusi i liquidi).

Prova su strada nuova Voyager: tanto confort, pochi motori

L'ultima versione della Voyager ora porta il marchio Lancia. Quella a benzina è la più indovinata, ma in Italia non verrà importata

È difficile stabilire chi abbia inventato l'auto monovolume. Forse il merito, almeno a livello concettuale, spetta alla Volkswagen che presentò la prima versione del suo mitico Transporter nel lontano 1949 e da allora ne vendette a milioni. Certo è che nemmeno i 27 anni e i 13 milioni di esemplari vantati da Chrysler per il suo Voyager sono cosa da poco: se la casa americana è giunta seconda, o forse terza, si tratta di piazzamenti comunque onorevoli. Ora prova a “bissare” il successo con la nuova Lancia Voyager.

VOYAGER CAPITOLO SEI – Quella che ci apprestiamo a provare è la sesta generazione del Voyager che in Italia ed Europa (Regno Unito a parte) viene presentata e verrà commercalizzata esclusivamente con il marchio Lancia , mentre negli Usa e negli altri mercati anglosassoni continuerà a esibire il logo pentagonale Chrysler . Dal punto di vista commerciale, la nuova Voyager dovrà raccogliere anche l'eredita della Lancia Phedra, recentemente pensionata a conclusione dell'alleanza italo-francese sfociata nella produzione delle Fiat Ulysse, Peugeot 807 , Citroën C8 e, appunto, della Phedra. Oltre che monovolume come è sempre stata, la nuova Voyager sarà anche, almeno inizialmente, mono-allestimento: c'è solo la Gold, proposta sia con il motore a benzina Pentastar da 3,6 litri e 208 kW-283 CV (ma non in Italia, dove non sarà importata), sia con il 4 cilindri 2.8 turbodiesel da 120 kW-163 CV adottato fin dai tempi dello sventurato matrimonio tra Chrysler e Daimler (ma in realtà targato VM Motori), rimasto alla casa americana Chrysler dopo il naufragio dell'alleanza. Insomma, la Voyager dovrà fare a meno del ben più moderno propulsore V6 3 litri a gasolio prodotto sempre dall'italiana VM che invece, in versione 140 kW-190 CV o 176 kW-239 CV, viene offerto sulla nuovissima Lancia Thema che SicurAUTO ha guidato a Torino . Una scelta apparentemente bizzarra, ma a quanto pare necessaria: l'adozione del propulsore VM avrebbe richiesto lavori di riprogettazione del pianale ben più radicali del suo semplice aggiornamento, e poiché quest'ultima era la strada che si era deciso di seguire, il mantenimento del 4 cilindri Mercedes è stata una conseguenza inevitabile. Come quella di dover rinunciare, per la motorizzazione a benzina, anche al nuovo cambio automatico a 8 marce, proposto sulla nuova Thema , in favore di un meno evoluto 6 marce. È proprio questa accoppiata, propulsore 3,6 litri a benzina e cambio a 6 rapporti, quella oggetto del nostro test drive: abbiano decisi di provarla proprio per cercare di capire a che cosa dovranno rinunciare gli italiani che non potranno acquistarla.

ABITO NUOVO – Esternamente, la nuova Voyager è un imponente MPV, un macchinone di quasi 5,22 metri e largo quasi 2. Quindi è appena più lunga della precedente Voyager di 5a generazione (5.144 mm) e parecchio più lunga di quella di 4a generazione prodotta fino al 2007, che misurava 4.808 mm in versione “corta”, mentre quella “stretched”, la Grand Voyager, raggiungeva i 5.093 mm. Insomma, la casa ha confermato la rinuncia allo sdoppiamento in due già abbandonato sulla Voyager 5a serie e ripropone la grande “taglia unica” con un passo inalterato di 3.078 mm, rimaneggiando solo marginalmente la nota piattaforma “RT”. In altre parole, un vestito nuovo di zecca su un telaio “rinfrescato”. Il posto guida è di quelli che non fanno rimpiangere troppo le tradizionali berline. Anche qui, come nella nuova Thema, le possibilità di regolazione sono infinite: sedili, piantone sterzo e pedaliera mobili consentono di trovare facilmente la posizione ideale. La strumentazione ha il “look” della nuova Thema, mentre sul lato destro del cruscotto spicca il selettore del cambo automatico in puro stile Fiat Multipla.

UN'AGILE “CORRIERINA” – Dopo aver messo in moto (anche qui il sistema di avviamento è a pulsante) stiamo ad ascoltare per un paio di minuti, a portiera aperta, il ronzio soffuso del 6 cilindri Pentastar. In realtà c'è ben poco da ascoltare e quando chiudiamo la portiera non c'è più nulla. Ci avviamo fuori dal centro di Torino e ovviamente il primo aspetto che vogliamo esplorare e la maneggevolezza nel traffico cittadino di questo pachiderma. Complimenti: saranno i 283 CV del motore (che, intendiamoci, non sono certo pochi), sarà il buon servosterzo, o sarà forse il cambio automatico che regala tanta coppia soprattutto nelle marce basse, ma il pachiderma si destreggia bene e sgattaiolare nel traffico con una “corrierina” da oltre 5 metri e più di 2.300 kg in ordine di marcia è un bel piacere. Il rumore all'interno, che non disturba molto, viene tutto dal V6, che ci permettiamo di maltrattare un po', ma dalle sospensioni non arriva altro che qualche “bump” molto attutito e praticamente non giunge nulla dagli pneumatici, che Lancia afferma sono “specifici”, senza tuttavia chiarire meglio in che cosa. Nei percorsi autostradali smettiamo il “maltrattamento” e ci rilassiamo a velocità “domenicali”. Questo è, ovviamente, il vero terreno sul quale la Voyager si trova a suo agio: a velocità da Codice, il grido del Pentastar è solo un ricordo e, con i dovuti distinguo, sembra quasi di essere su un veicolo elettrico. Pur senza aver guidato l'altra versione disponibile, quella con il 4 cilindri a gasolio, riteniamo di poter dire che il motore “giusto” per la nuova monovolume è proprio quello che abbiamo provato. Del resto, almeno per ora non c'è altro da scegliere. Chissà se Lancia vorrà proporre anche un diesel un po' più pepato del 163 CV e importare pure la versione a benzina, accreditata di un consumo dichiarato di quasi 11 litri/100 km. Cioé, nella pratica, molti più.

SPAZIO SMISURATO – Una particolare attenzione va riservata, in ogni vettura monovolume, alla gestone dello spazio e del confort a bordo, che sulla Voyager sono entrambi di buon livello. I sedili (la pelle è di serie) sono ben imbottiti e riscaldati elettricamente ai posti anteriori, ma non mancano le cadute di stile: quegli esili braccioli non imbottiti ai sedili posteriori sanno tanto di autobus per il trasporto regionale, e con la pelle delle poltrone non vanno proprio d'accordo: urgono un'imbottitura e un aspetto degni del resto. In ogni caso, tutte le sedute sono comode, ci sono vani per riporre oggetti un po' ovunque e chi vuole dissetarsi trova abbondanza di luoghi dove collocare bottiglie e bicchieri. Un cenno particolare al sitema “Stow 'n Go” (che non è una novità: c'era già sulla 5a serie), ovvero al meccanismo che permette di far scomparire una o entrambe le file di sedili posteriori in appositi vani ricavati nel pavimento. Ogni gruppo di sedili è dotato di cinghe di tessuto, numerate da 1 a 4, che suggeriscono l'esatta sequenza delle manovre necessaria per completare l'operazione. Insomma, la cosa non è difficile, ma occorre un po' di forza fisica e un certo allungo delle braccia: due caratteristiche che, ne siamo sicuri, non tutta la clientela femminile possiede. Del resto, durante la presentazione stampa della vettura, l'operazione è stata illustrata ed eseguita in un batter d'occhio da un “pezzo d'uomo” Lancia alto un buon metro e novanta o più e nel replicarla qualche lieve difficoltà l'abbiamo incontrata. Ci hanno parlato di un sistema che esegue il tutto tramite servomotori elettrici: a nostro parere sarebbe altamente consigliabile, senonché… nel listino accessori non se ne trova traccia. Forse arriverà. In ogni caso, quando sarete riusciti a far sparire i sedili, l'effetto sarà straordinario: non è più il caso di parlare di “bagagliaio”, ora la vostra Voyager è un furgoncino con un vano di carica di quasi 4 mila litri e se abbatterete solo l'ultima fila ne resteranno sempre 2.400.

PASSI AVANTI NELLA SICUREZZA – Lancia dichiara che sull'ultima Voyager i dispositivi dedicati alla sicurezza di conducente, passeggeri e pedoni sono oltre 40 (più di 70 nella nuova Thema). Tra questi, ricordiamo gli airbag anteriori multistadio che “scoppiano” e si gonfiano con intensità variabile alla gravità dell'urto, gli airbag laterali a tendina per le tre file di sedili, il controllo elettronico della stabilità con assistenza alla frenata e controllo della trazione a tutte le velocità, fendinebbia, proiettori automatici, il sistema di protezione attiva dei pedoni che agisce sul cofano motore e gli appoggiatesta attivi. Però non è indovinata, a nostro parere, la scelta di offrire solo a pagamento il sistema di rilevamento dei veicoli che provengono da angoli ciechi, inserito in un pacchetto che comprende lo specchiettro retrovisore: in particolare su un'auto di queste dimensioni, sarebbe stato meglio renderlo di serie.

ALLESTIMENTO PIUTTOSTO COMPLETO, POCHI ACCESSORI – E a proposito di accessori a richiesta, non sono molti, visto che la dotazione di serie è già piuttosto completa. La lista si limita a tetto apribile, sospensioni autolivellanti, fari bi-xenon (non adattivi come nella Thema) e a qualche opzione per i sistemi di “infotainment” di bordo come, per esempio, i due monitor a scomparsa che scendono dal tetto a disposizione dei passeggeri posteriori, i quali possono usarli in modo indipendente. Quello inserito nella plancia non ha le dimensioni ridondanti di quello da 8,4″ della nuova Thema, ma con 6,5″ è già più che sufficiente, oltre a essere meno invadente rispetto al dispositivo della nuova ammiraglia. Dimenticavamo: la vernice metallizzata (tre le tinte disponibili), praticamente obbligatoria. A meno che non scegliate il bianco correndo il rischio di essere fermati da chi vi ha scambiato per un taxi. Prezzi: la versione a gasolio, l'unica venduta, è in listino a 39.900 euro, un valore più o meno allineato alla concorrenza. Tra gli affezionati a questo tipo di vettura, certo l'adozione del nuovo propulsore turbodiesel VM a sei cilindri avrebbe fatto la differenza sulle concorrenti e forse avrebbe fruttato qualche vendita in più rispetto alle circa 3.800 che Lancia prevede per il 2012.

Khabarovsk: The city on the 5,000 ruble banknote

Located at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovsk (6140 kilometers from Moscow) is the second largest city in the Russian Far East after Vladivostok. Having grown from a small military post in the middle of the 19 th  century, the city got its name from the famous Russian explorer Yerofei Khabarov, who surveyed the Amur River. Currently Khabarovsk is the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District.

The city was founded by Count Nikolai Muravyov-Amursky and the main street is named in his honor. Modern buildings and shopping centers coexist with old stone houses of gray and red. A monument to this famous Russian statesman can be found in the city’s Central Park. This statue can also be seen on the 5,000-ruble banknote.

The best way to explore Khabarovsk is on foot, beginning at Lenin Square and working your way towards the banks of the Amur River. The two main boulevards, Amursky and Ussuriisky, run parallel to each other. The architecture on Lenin and Serysheva streets, with its mostly Stalin-era structures, differs from the beautiful pre-revolutionary buildings on ul. Muravieva-Amurskogo. The Amursky and Ussuriisky boulevards did not exist until the mid-1960s.

Khabarovsk is not a typical Russian city along the Trans-Siberian Railway. The unusual fusion of Russian and Chinese cultures is felt in the food, culture and even lifestyle of its residents. Japanese touches complement this picture in the form of blossoming cherry trees and cars with steering wheels on the right hand side. That Khabarovsk has such a strong Asian influence should not seem surprising, as the city is located only 17 kilometers from the state border with China. The nearest Chinese settlement, Fuyuan, is 65 kilometers down the river from Khabarovsk.

Khabarovsk’s gem is its picturesque river embankment and the Amursky rail and road bridge, which is also depicted on the 5,000-ruble banknote. Just like the Eiffel Tower, this bridge won the gold medal of the World Exhibition in Paris in the early 20 th  century.

Khabarovsk's museums

Khabarovsk became famous during the Soviet period for a popular song about border guards that stand on the "high banks of the Amur" and protect the motherland. It is not hard to find old cannons on display in the city that were fired during the Russo-Japanese War.

At the present time Khabarovsk is the headquarters of Russia’s Far Eastern Military District.

The Military Historical Museum of the Far Eastern Military District depicts in great detail everything you ever wanted to know about the formation and development of the army in the Far East. Models of weapons from different years are exhibited over the museum’s 13 halls and heavy military equipment is placed in the courtyard of an observation deck. The museum itself is located in a historic building right on the bank of the Amur River.

The Far Eastern Art Museum, also known as the "Far East Tretyakov Gallery" features original works of ancient Russian art, as well as local artists from the Amur Region. Among the artists on display are Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin, Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov, Isaak Levitan, Alexander Benois, Apollinaris Vasnetsov and Mikhail Vrubel. Many of these works of art came to the Far East from museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The Khabarovsk Regional Museum holds collections of flora and fauna, ethnography exhibits of indigenous peoples and Slavic settlers, and displays by paleontologists and geologists that tell the city’s story from its foundation. The only archaeological museum in the Far East is the Okladnikov Museum, which features 120,000 ancient artifacts pertaining to the Amur Region.

For those traveling with children, Khabarovsk has special kid-friendly attractions including an aquarium featuring fresh water fish of the Amur River basin, as well as the Gaidar Amusement Park and the Khabarovsk State Circus.

A living museum of Far Eastern flora can be found at the Khabarovsk Arboretum, established as an experimental laboratory in 1896. It has collected about 300 plant species that grow in the Ussuri taiga as well as those from the Himalayas, Central Asia and North America.

Khabarovsk is known for its parks such as Dynamo or Yuri Gagarin Park. The Central Park of Culture and Relaxation is perfect for taking leisurely strolls and leads to the river station located within the park, where you can take a boat ride on the Amur River. Especially memorable is taking a walk along the river at night, when Khabarovsk is illuminated by hundreds of colored lights. In the park there is also an observation deck that offers a spectacular view of the Amur.

The oldest Orthodox Church in Khabarovsk is a Church of St. Innocentius  of Irkutsk, erected in 1870 in honor of the patron saint of Siberia and the Far East. The impressive Holy Transfiguration Cathedral (its height with golden domes is 95 meters), built from the donations of inhabitants of the region, is the third largest temple in Russia after Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.

Several major theaters operate in Khabarovsk, which is often called the cultural center of the Far East. These include the Khabarovsk Regional Musical Theater performing classic operetta and musical comedy, and the Regional Drama Theatre featuring international and domestic classics. There is also the Triad professional mime theater, which offers unusual performances in interesting interiors. 

Why you should climb the Khabarovsk cliff

Khabarovsk is hot and humid in the summer with temperatures reaching 30 C and cold and dry in the winter with the average temperature being -24 C. However, the temperatures often drop below -30, making Khabarovsk the coldest city with a population of 500,000 or more in the world. There are massive ice sculptures on Lenin Square from January until the spring thaw in April as part of the annual Amur Crystal and Ice Fantasy festivals. City Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of May, is a good reason to visit Khabarovsk at the beginning of summer.

No matter the season, if it is clear, then climb the Khabarovsk cliff (ul. Shevchenko 15), a true symbol of the city. A famous building was constructed here on a rocky promontory 70 years ago by an architect named Starikov. At first it was a station for military observation, later becoming a rescue station. After the building was transferred to Khabarovsk Central Park of Culture and Recreation, a viewing platform was added that now offers the best panoramic views of the Amur River. History of Khabarovsk

Foundation of khabarovsk.

Until the mid-19th century, the territory of present-day Khabarovsk, in accordance with the Nerchinsk Treaty, was located on a neutral territory, not delimited between the Qing Empire (China) and the Russian Empire. In 1858, the Aigun Treaty was signed, according to which the entire left bank of the Amur River passed into the possession of the Russian Empire, the right bank of the Amur to the Ussuri River became part of China.

After signing the treaty, the 13th Siberian Line Battalion was sent to establish settlements along the Amur. One of the new settlements was named Khabarovka - in honor of Yerofey Khabarov, a 17th-century Russian explorer known for his attempts to colonize this region for Russia. In 1864, the first plan for the development of the future town was made. By 1865, there were 1,294 residents in Khabarovka - mostly soldiers and officers.

Initially, only military buildings were constructed in Khabarovka. Five years after the foundation, there were already 167 buildings in the settlement including the house of the commander, barracks, warehouses, residential buildings, and trading shops. Due to its very convenient location at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, Khabarovka began to develop very quickly.

Following the military settlers, civilians began to arrive from all parts of the Russian Empire including Moscow and St. Petersburg. At that time, their main occupations were hunting, fur trade, and fishing. The settlers were provided with free fertile land, which also contributed to the influx of new residents to Khabarovka.

Khabarovsk - a regional center of the Russian Far East

In 1873, the first elementary school was opened in Khabarovka. The Russo-Chinese treaty of 1881 allowed duty-free trade in the 50-kilometer land border zone and the goods of Chinese and English manufacturers could be bought half cheaper here.

By 1880, Khabarovka was already a rather large settlement of Primorsky Oblast with a population of 2,036 people (47.3% - military, 23% - bourgeois, 21.3% - foreigners (mainly Chinese workers), 1.4% - representatives of the indigenous population, and 7% - officers, clergy, merchants, industrialists).

At that time, the capital of Primorsky Oblast was Nikolayevsk (today’s Nikolayevsk-on-Amur), but Khabarovka had a more advantageous geographical position, as it was located at the crossroads of all communication lines from Vladivostok and the coast. In 1880, Khabarovka became the center of Primorsky Oblast and transformed into a town. In 1893, the town was renamed Khabarovsk.

In 1894, the Amur (Khabarovsk) department of the Russian Geographical Society was created with a museum (the Khabarovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore) and a library. In 1895, the first vocational technical school was opened - the railway school of the Ministry of Railways. During these years, a lot of stone houses were built in Khabarovsk. Most of them are preserved in the city to this day.

In 1897, the first train departed from the Khabarovsk railway station. The Ussuri Railway connected Khabarovsk with Vladivostok. The population of the town was about 14,900 people.

Khabarovsk in the 20th century and beyond

In 1916, the construction of a railway bridge over the Amur was completed and Khabarovsk was connected by the Amur Railway with Eastern Siberia.

November 14, 1922, after the liquidation of the Far Eastern Republic, Khabarovsk became part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. On December 6, 1923, the administrative center of the Russian Far East was transferred to Khabarovsk from Chita. In 1925, the railway bridge over the Amur was restored.

On January 4, 1926, Far Eastern Krai was formed with its center in Khabarovsk. The population of the city was about 52 thousand people. On October 23, 1934, the Far Eastern Agricultural Research Institute was established in Khabarovsk. In 1936, Khabarovsk was connected by rail with Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

By 1939, the population of Khabarovsk increased to 200 thousand people. From June 1940, the command of the Far Eastern Front was deployed in Khabarovsk. From August 1945, the headquarters of the High Command of Soviet Forces in the Far East and the command of the 1st Far Eastern Front were stationed in the city.

On March 16, 1946, the Khabarovsk Drama Theater was created. In 1949, a trial was held in Khabarovsk in the case of former members of the Japanese Kwantung Army. The most significant changes in the city occurred in the post-war decades.

In 1960, the Khabarovsk television studio began broadcasting. On October 24, 1964, the Khabarovsk Shipyard produced the first “Rocket”, a famous Soviet hydrofoil ship. On September 1, 1967, the Khabarovsk Institute of Physical Education (the Far Eastern State Academy of Physical Culture) was opened. On September 1, 1968, the Khabarovsk State Institute of Arts and Culture was opened.

In 1975, the population of Khabarovsk was about 502,000 people. By 1990, Khabarovsk was formed as a multifunctional economic center of national importance. The population reached its maximum of 616 thousand people.

In May 2000, federal districts were formed in the Russian Federation. Khabarovsk became the center of the Far Eastern Federal District. In 2008, the railway station was completely renovated. In 2009, the reconstruction of the bridge across the Amur was finished. In late summer - early fall of 2013, Khabarovsk was affected by flooding, which became the strongest over the entire observation period since 1897.

On December 13, 2018, the center of the Far Eastern Federal District was moved from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok.

Khabarovsk - Features

Khabarovsk is often considered the capital of the Russian Far East. The city is located in Asia, in the southern part of the Central Amur Lowland, near the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers, about 17 km from the border with China. The city stands on the elevated right bank of the Amur River, the relief of which is diverse and complex.

The distance from Moscow to Khabarovsk by roads is about 8,250 km, to Vladivostok - 750 km. About half of the population of Khabarovsk Krai lives in this city. Khabarovsk is a bit similar to the large cities of the Volga region. Here you can see similar new buildings wedging chaotically into the cityscape and an abundance of pre-revolutionary architecture.

Although Khabarovsk can’t boast of Vladivostok’s seaside flavor or all-Russian sights, it’s still worth coming here, and to some extent this is inevitable: all routes of the Khabarovsk region converge here.

The climate in Khabarovsk is temperate monsoon, with snowy cold winters and hot humid summers. The average temperature in January is minus 20.5 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 21.8 degrees Celsius. The number of sunny days per year is significantly higher than in a number of large cities of Russia (up to 300 days a year; in Moscow and St. Petersburg - about 100).

From November to March, very dry and frosty continental air with clear and sunny weather is established over the city. The best time to visit Khabarovsk is June and September when the weather is not too hot.

Khabarovsk is a major hub at the junction of water, air, rail, and road communications from the north and west of the country, Primorye, Sakhalin, and the ports of Khabarovsk Krai. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through the city, as well as the railway line to Komsomolsk-on-Amur. This city is the connecting point of the federal highways “Amur” (Chita - Khabarovsk), “Ussuri” (Khabarovsk - Vladivostok), and Khabarovsk - Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Urban transport includes trams, trolleybuses, buses, minibuses, and taxis.

The international airport “Novy” offers regular flights to Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Vladivostok, Yakutsk, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Magadan, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Seoul (South Korea), Tokyo (Japan).

The design of the Russian 5,000 rubles banknote features Khabarovsk. On its front side you can see the monument to Muravyov-Amursky (the founder of Khabarovsk and Vladivostok) on the background of the embankment of the Amur River. The Khabarovsk bridge over the Amur is depicted on the back of the banknote. At the time of construction, in 1916, it was one of the longest bridges in the world and was called “The Amur Miracle”.

The fork-shaped cross depicted on the coat of arms of Khabarovsk symbolizes the location of the city at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers. Fish reminds of the main occupation of the first residents - fishing. The white-breasted bear and the Amur tiger are endemic to the Amur land.

Khabarovsk Regional Museum named after Nikolai Grodekov . The expositions of this museum feature exhibits on the paleontology and geology of the Amur Region, the flora and fauna of the Far East, the fish of the Amur basin, the culture of the indigenous peoples of the Amur region and Russian settlers, the history of the development of the Russian Far East, the events of the Civil War in the Far East (1917-1922). Amur (Khabarovsk) Cliff - the most beautiful place in the city located in the center of Admiral Gennady Nevelsky Embankment running along the Amur River bank, near the Khabarovsk Regional Museum. In 1858, a military detachment led by commander Yakov Dyachenko landed here. He decided to set up his camp here, which later became a military settlement, and even later - the village of Khabarovka.

Here you can find a good observation deck with beautiful views of the Amur River and the city. Nearby, there is a park with the famous monument to the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia Muravyov-Amursky. This monument is depicted on the Russian banknote of 5,000 rubles. Shevchenko Street, 15.

The Far Eastern Art Museum - the largest museum of fine art in the Russian Far East. The collection of this museum has about 16 thousand works of art of the Old Russian, Russian pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and modern periods. Military History Museum of the Far Eastern Military District . The museum exhibits documents, photographs, banners of all periods of the history of the Far Eastern Military District, starting with the Russian Civil War in the Far East and to our time. Khabarovsk Assumption Cathedral - the first stone building and one of the largest churches in Khabarovsk. The original building was demolished in 1930. In 2002, the cathedral was restored according to a new architectural project in the Russian style with some eclectic features. The new cathedral as a whole differs from the original building, but has some of its elements. In particular, the shapes of the arches and domes of the new cathedral were taken from the old version. Khabarovsk Bridge (“The Amur Miracle”) - one of the main symbols of Khabarovsk. The construction of this bridge completed the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1916. This bridge is depicted on the Russian 5,000 Rubles banknote. In the 1990s, the bridge was reconstructed, its old openwork spans were dismantled. Nearby, you can find the Museum of the History of the Amur Bridge with the last preserved span of the original design.

Lenin Square - the central and most picturesque square in Khabarovsk. In size, it is second only to Red Square in Moscow. It is framed by buildings of various styles of architecture, size, and number of storeys. There are beautiful fountains, well-groomed flower beds, and trimmed lawns here.

Severny Park - a cascade of three small but very picturesque ponds. In the middle of the green lawns and trees there are small arbors, as well as a snow-white wedding palace. Nearby, you can see the Church of Seraphim of Sarov. Kakhovskaya Street, 1.

I lived in Khabarovsk for many years. I was an American working there. I spoke fluent Russian and pretty much blended right in. No one guessed I was a foreigner. I made lots of truly wonderful friends some of whom became like family.

I walked about any time I felt like it and never had any sort of problems. I lived in several other cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg and Khabarovsk is my favorite. If I could figure out a way to live there permanently, I would with pleasure.

I had the pleasure of flying a number of flights to Khabarovsk in the early 1990's. I met some wonderful people, one very special person. While the city was in a semi state of disrepair, it still held the historic beauty of its earlier years.

It has been over 20 years since my visit and I would very much like to return. Perhaps not in this life time but the memories live on.
