How to Book a Hollywood and Laurel Canyon Music Tour

To book a Hollywood and Laurel Canyon rock tour, you’ll have to go through Miss P!

Pamela regularly lists upcoming tours on her website , or, if you know you’ll have a large group interested, you can always reach out to her through her website contact info and see what’s available.

What to Expect on Pamela Des Barres’ Tour

A sign in Laurel Canyon that says "You are Here" with a mirror

About four hours long, this Hollywood music tour includes a lunch stop at a local taco restaurant (the food isn’t included), safe transportation in a van, stories from both Pamela and her friend Kip Brown (who is also the driver), and access to Hollywood and Laurel Canyon’s top music history locations.

You’ll have a few fellow attendees on the tour with you, and everyone is encouraged to pipe in and share their personal experiences with rock n roll at any time.

On the tour I took, we indulged ourselves in sweet, sticky nostalgia for all afternoon, the ones old enough to have actually been there unleashing their rose-colored memories onto us younger folk.

A heart rendition of the American flag and a coffee board at the Canyon Country Store in Laurel Canyon

Not only was Miss P’s rock tour an amazing way to see Los Angeles for the first time, but it was also an incredible way to hear about the freewheeling ways of trailblazing rock stars from someone with first-hand experience.

We went to the fountain in which Keith Moon decided to pour an entire box of Tide, to the doors of the venue where Miss P rolled around backstage with Jim Morrison while loaded on Trimar, to the studio where John Lennon insulted her by repeating her name over and over until it sounded like mush, and to the remnants of Frank Zappa’s infamous log cabin… among so many others.

My Personal Connection to Miss P and the Dolls

The day I picked up Pamela’s 1987 memoir “ I’m With The Band: Confessions of a Groupie ” is very vivid in my mind.

This was back in 2012 when I was a kid in university studying the music business, trying to soak up absolutely everything I could about rock n’ roll.

I knew almost nothing of Pamela at the time, and so when I stood in the rock memoir section of the bookstore perusing my options, it was pure chance that I noticed her book. Over the next couple of days, reading the memoir and hearing her stories of being a groupie in 1960s–1970s Los Angeles set my brain on fire.

Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, and Nick St. Nicholas of Steppenwolf made up only some of her sexual adventures of the time. Not to mention her wild experiences at Frank Zappa’s log cabin babysitting Moon Unit and recording music with the GTO’s.

As soon as I finished her memoir I looked her up online, and the front page of her website told me that she taught memoir-writing classes and that she was coming to Toronto (where I lived) for the very first time in just a month.

Kismet? Absolutely. Cosmic intervention? 100%.

Taylor in front of the Canyon Country Store sign in Laurel Canyon

Before the class, I was so nervous that I sat in my car for a good ten minutes mustering up the courage to walk into the host’s house. I’d say the nerves were an equal summation of being about to meet one of my idols, reading my writing in front of a group of women, a fear of the unknown, and knowing my life was about to change forever.

There were about twenty other women who had signed up, none of whom I knew, but many of whom knew each other. For four hours we sat around in a circle, wrote stories for exactly twelve minutes prompted by topics Miss P gave us, and then read our stories aloud.

The topics varied from writing a letter to our sixteen-year-old selves, to picking one person in history to have dinner with, to describing our very first love interests. It was an experience akin to staring into a stranger’s eyes for three minutes straight and falling in love.

I walked out of class that evening having met people I now call my best friends. Written in the loosest meaning of the phrase, finding her book, going to her workshop, and meeting some of my favorite people felt like it was “meant to be”.

My life from that point forward took a very steep curve into uncharted, magical territory. Including four years down the road when I took Pamela’s tour through Hollywood and Laurel Canyon.

That’s it for my guide to taking a music tour led by Pamela des Barres in Hollywood and Laurel Canyon!  For more USA music, check out What to Expect at the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame & Museum in Cleveland !

I’m With the Band, one of my favorite reads ever❣️ I Love Miss P and I would really Love to take her tour ❤️

Mine too! Taking the tour is such a great way to visit a lot of the locations mentioned in the book 🙂

Heidi Chavers

My son (40) and I are planning a visit to Laurel Canyon in June. The 60’s and 70’s music ushered me through many rights of passage. Fortunately my son, an old soul music lover and DJ was indoctrinated with the music that saturated my soul and my breast milk. I would love to make the best of our time in Hollywood/ and brief time to bask in the environment of my heroines and heroes. My son is a paraplegic and I am trying to figure out the best way for us to tour. He is very capable in his manual wheelchair but getting on and off a bus would be challenging w/out a lift. He can get in and out of cars well. He is so smart and fun and music has been a major part of his life. Any info will be greatly appreciated!!!!! We will be there @ June 25-28.

Hi Heidi — That’s so awesome to hear about your connection to the music! I’d definitely reach out to Pamela on her website for more information about this. From what I gather, they rent a new van every time they do the tour, so they may be able to make accommodations.

Lina

Hi there. My daughter (13) loves music. Specifically the Beatles and Bowie. Would this tour be appropriate for her? Im taking her to the country market but the is more to see . Can you assist in this matter?

Hi Lina! Pamela does take guests to destinations involving the Beatles, but only ones involving her own personal experiences. Her books do involve more adult content, so I’d recommend reaching out to her and seeing if she has any recommendations for you! Cheers!

My mama said look out for those bad girls that live in the canyon.

I am a fan of the original Star Trek. I just watched a movie about Susan Oliver and it said she lived in Laurel Canyon. Would you happen to know where? Just curious because it seemed she had it together, but unfortunately trusted people who took advantage of her investments.

Thanks much if you are able to help.

Los Angeles Tourist Information, Sightseeing, Pictures and Tourism Links

Mulholland Drive, Los Angeles

Mulholland Drive Access Routes. [Photo Credit: Google Maps]

The easiest roads to access Mulholland Drive

  • Highland Avenue to Cahuenga Blvd West - from Hollywood
  • 101 Freeway to Barham to Cahuenga Blvd West - from Downtown LA and all points south and east
  • Crescent Heights to Laurel Canyon - from Hollywood, The Grove & Farmers Market, Museum Square in Miracle Mile, Beverly Center
  • Beverly Glen - from Westwood, Century City or Beverly Hills
  • The 405 freeway or Sepulveda Blvd - from West LA, including Westwood area, near the Getty, from LAX or Santa Monica
  • Los Angeles and Hollywood - Hollywood Bowl Overlook. 7036 Mulholland Drive.
  • San Fernando Valley - Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook. 8401 Mulholland Drive.

Which Direction?

  • West to East (405 freeway to 101 freeway) - in this direction it is easier to stop at the Hollywood Bowl overlook near the 101 freeway. This is the recommended direction, because the Hollywood Bowl overlook is a "must-see" stop on Mulholland Drive.
  • East to West (101 freeway to 405 freeway) - in this direction it is much more difficult to stop at the Hollywood Bowl overlook, because it's on the opposite side of the street and it's near a curve.

Mulholland Drive Auto Tour on Google Maps. [Photo Credit: Google Maps]

A Driving Tour from Hollywood

  • Drive west on Hollywood Boulevard, all the way to the end at Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Turn right, northward, up the hill.
  • Proceed to Mulholland Drive (there is a traffic signal at this intersection), turn left (west).
  • Drive about 3/4 mile to the Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook , on the right side of the road. Park your car in the lot and enjoy the views of the San Fernando Valley. You can also hike down into the canyon below on the Betty Dearing Trail.
  • OPTIONAL: If you just want a quick look, then Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook is a great choice because there's plenty of parking and the viewpoint is only steps away. But if want to stay awhile, or hike down into the canyon, then continue past the overlook and head to TreePeople , and walk down to Coldwater Canyon Park. There are longer trails and more interesting things to see. The view is equal from either location, although you will need to walk farther to see the view from Coldwater Canyon Park. It is an easy "hike" on dirt roads with a section of incline.

Nancy Hoover Pohl Overlook on Mulholland Drive. [Photo Credit: LAtourist.com]

  • Park, get out and enjoy the views of the San Fernando Valley. You can also hike down into the canyon below on the Betty Dearing Trail.
  • When you leave (either the overlook or the park), turn left onto Mulholland Drive (eastbound), back in the direction from which you came.
  • Continue past Laurel Canyon Boulevard.
  • OPTIONAL: 1.3 miles east of Laurel Canyon, on the north side of the road is the Universal City overlook. It offers a great view of Universal Studios and the eastern portion of the San Fernando Valley, but it's on the opposite side of the street as you drive eastward. There is a narrow turnout on the south side of Mulholland Drive (on your right) where you can stop, but you'll need to walk across to the other side of road to get a good view. The turnout itself is very narrow and easy to miss. If you miss it you'll need to drive about a half mile to make U-turn to get back here.
  • 3.3 miles east of Laurel Canyon, on the south side of the road is the Hollywood Bowl overlook. It has a small parking lot. If the lot is full you can drive about 200 feet further on Mulholland Drive to park in a large dirt turnout.

View of Hollywood and Downtown L.A. at Hollywood Bowl Overlook. [Photo Credit: LAtourist.com]

  • At the Hollywood Bowl overlook you can view the city from the parking lot. You can see the Hollywood Bowl directly below, to the left. Walk up the stairs to see the Hollywood Sign and Griffith Park Observatory.
  • When you leave, turn right onto Mulholland Drive, driving downhill. Soon (about 0.7 mi) you will be at the bottom, turn right onto Woodrow Wilson Drive for just a few dozen feet, then turn right again onto Cahuenga Boulevard.
  • Stay on Cahuenga Boulevard - as it passes the Hollywood Bowl, it runs into Highland Avenue.
  • Proceed on Highland Avenue to Hollywood Boulevard.

Laurel Canyon Rock 'n' Roll Landmarks

by Lori A. Selke

Published on 21 Mar 2018

Laurel Canyon, in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles above Sunset Boulevard and below Mulholland Drive, was a nexus of rock 'n' roll-related activity in the 1960s. Everyone from David Crosby and Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to Jim Morrison, Frank Zappa and Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas lived along Laurel Canyon Boulevard or the numerous dead-end side streets that branched off it. Perhaps its most famous denizen was Joni Mitchell, whose song "Ladies of the Canyon" was inspired by her time there. The neighborhood is quiet and laid-back, but sightseers can still take a peek at some rock royalty landmarks as they drive through.

Canyon Country Store

Any tour of Laurel Canyon should begin at this tiny, red-brick market adorned with murals evoking the era of the canyon's famous days. The store sells wine, deli-style sandwiches and candy bars, among other goods, and it's been standing since 1929. In the 1960s, local musicians would come to jam on the front porch together -- members of the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield numbered among them. Mama Cass lived in the basement and penned the song "Twelve Thirty" there; Morrison referenced the store as "the place where the creatures meet" in his song "Love Street."

The Love Street House

Morrison lived in the house at 8021 Rothdell Trail, right behind the Canyon County Store, with his girlfriend Pamela Coulson. It's often known as The Love Street House because it's heavily referenced in Morrison's song "Love Street," the same one that mentions the store. In 2011 the Rothdell Trail house was again in the news when an arsonist set fire to a car parked in front of the house, resulting in some structural damage to the house itself, but it has since been repaired.

The Log Cabin

Zappa lived in a house colloquially referred to as "the Log Cabin." The building was originally a roadhouse in the silent film era. In 1968 Zappa moved into the property, basement bowling alley and all. He brought with him a huge entourage of groupies, aspiring musicians and general hangers-on. The doors were never locked and the party never stopped. In 1982 the Log Cabin burned down, but you can still see its ruins at the corner of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Lookout Mountain.

8217 Lookout Mountain

Mitchell owns the unassuming little cottage at 8217 Lookout Mountain. For a brief time, she lived there with Nash; their surprisingly domesticated affair -- and a shopping trip to an antiques store, where Mitchell bought a vase -- inspired Nash's hit song "Our House" for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. The song was in fact written at Mitchell's piano right there at the cottage.

Wallowa Mountain Loop Road Is:

The route of the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is a loop that encircles the Wallowa Mountains, intersecting with Interstate 84 at La Grande and Baker City.

laurel canyon driving tour

Small towns, scattered along the drive, offer visitor services. The entire route is on a paved highway. Plan ahead – you’ll find stretches of more than eighty miles without gas and with few services. A segment of the Byway between Joseph and Halfway closes with snow in winter, but allows access to winter recreation areas, offering a whole other kind of Northeast Oregon adventure. Visitor information for communities in each of the three counties through which the byway passes is available by clicking the links in the list of cities below. Find visitor information and plan your visit to the entire region at visiteasternoregon.com . There are five ports of entry into the Byway:

  • La Grande from I-84
  • Elgin via OR Hwy. 204
  • Enterprise via OR Hwy. 3
  • Oxbow via Idaho Hwy.71
  • Baker City from I-84.

See Map  |  See Byway Segment Details

You can drive the Byway in about four to five hours, but to really enjoy it, you will need a few days. We recommend you reserve lodging accommodations prior to your trip.

Here is a list of  mileage  for several byway segments and side trips:

  • La Grande to Enterprise = 63 miles; paved
  • Enterprise to Joseph = 15 miles;  paved
  • Joseph to Imnaha = 30 miles; paved
  • Imnaha to Hat Point = 24 miles; gravel (Highly recommended for the best view of canyon, but it is an investment of about 5 to 6 hours in time, round trip from Joseph). Pack a picnic or plan a stop at the iconic Imnaha Tavern.
  • Imnaha to intersection with FSR 39 = 26 miles; gravel
  • Joseph to Hells Canyon Overlook = 35 miles, plus 2 miles; paved   (We highly recommend this side trip to get a good view of the canyon from above.)
  • Joseph to intersection with OR 86 = 54 miles; paved
  • Halfway to Copperfield (at the Snake River) on OR 86 = 21 miles; paved
  • Copperfield to Hells Canyon Dam = 27 miles; paved (Highly recommended side trip for experiencing the canyon from river level.)
  • Copperfield to Baker City = 70 miles on OR 86;  paved

Although the digital world is great, we still strongly recommend people pick up a free official Oregon State Highway map, put out by the Oregon Department of Transportation, for travels throughout Oregon, available at visitor centers throughout Oregon. Also good to have is a Wallowa-Whitman National Forest Map for travels in the mountains of northeast Oregon, including the HCSB. Purchase this map at any Forest Service District Ranger office (Baker City, La Grande, Joseph, Halfway) and many other locations.

BYWAY TRAVEL SAVVY

Before starting out, take notice of the travel times as well as mileage between stops and keep your fuel tank as full as possible.

If you plan to hike, ski, snowmobile or otherwise explore off the main Byway routes, pick up detailed maps and additional information from the offices listed on the links shown above.

Be prepared for temperatures that vary as much as fifty degrees as the day wears on.

Remember to take along plenty of drinking water, your camera, binoculars, a picnic or snack foods, plant and wildlife guides, first aid kit, a blanket and jackets.

Unless familiar with the byway country, please stay on the byway proper or the identified side trips. Do not rely only on GPS generated driving instructions as they may lead to little traveled roads or roads that are not suitable for passenger vehicles or closed seasonally.

Driving Distance Calculator

Driving distances between two cities.

Travelmath helps you find driving distances based on actual directions for your road trip. You can get the distance between cities, airports, states, countries, or zip codes to figure out the best route to travel to your destination. Combine this information with the fuel cost tool to find out how much it will cost you to drive the distance, or compare the results to the straight line distance to determine whether it's better to drive or fly. You can print out pages with a travel map.

Maybe you want to see the driving time instead? Or if you're driving a long distance, you might want to check the midpoint of your trip to find a hotel.

Is there such a thing as a Laurel Canyon Tour? I know the houses will have changed a lot since the 60's/70's but I've read so much about the place, I have to make a pilgrimage.

(sorry I have now found a thread that answers this but I can't seem to delete this question.)

https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g28926-i29-k8562028-70s_Music_Tour_of_California-California.html

Any pointers would be supremely welcome.

Many Thanks!

While there's no Laurel Canyon tour, specifically, you could ask an Uber driver to take you to the various addresses.

Pamela Des Barres, famous groupie (Almost Famous movie modeled on her), has a rock tour called I'm With the Band, every 6 weeks or so: http://pameladesbarres.net/tag/rock-tour/

I don't think you are going to find a driver with any knowledge of that era - they, like cabbies in other parts of the country and world, tend to be newcomers with limited english (same with rideshare drivers). Good thing there's GPS!

Here are tours. http://pameladesbarres.net/

Google really is your friend!

Thanks PlumeriaD for your responses. I'm staying off Sunset Blvd so it looks like it would be easy enough to get an Uber and a map and do it myself! That http://rockandrollroadmap.com/ looks awesome, thank you so so much for sharing!

ElleBeInLA - Pamella's tour looks awesome but her next one is this month so I'll miss it :-(

Nice! Let us know how you enjoyed it.

Pamela's next tour is October 16th. Don't know if you'll be here then. She does do them monthly and they sell out quickly.

PlumeriaD, thanks for the shout out to our Esotouric rock history tour, Where the Action Was. This tour, which is available as a large group private booking, actually stays down in the flats, so Pamela des Barres' tour in a smaller vehicle is a better option for exploring the canyon residences. We hear great things about it!

JNRSuffolk, if you do decide to go exploring on your own, we'd suggest hiring a driver to take a route you direct them on. The canyon streets are windy and narrow, and people drive fast on the main arteries. To get the maximum safe enjoyment, you'll be happiest in the passenger seat.
