Lil Nas X review, Glastonbury 2023: Grammy-winner injects some needed oomph into a mostly sedate weekend

Lil nas x lives up to his reputation for putting on exciting and inventive shows, article bookmarked.

After a weekend of mostly sedate and typically older artists, watching the frenetic Lil Nas X feels like scrolling frantically through a TikTok feed, playing a YouTube video on 2x speed, and chugging a can of Prime all at the same time. This formidable 24-year-old with just one album to his name throws so many ideas into his work that he’s impossible to pin down – and sometimes impossible to review.

Between his furry boots and the set’s breakneck pace, the show has the energy and aesthetics of a gabber rave. His 2021 debut Montero is a warped kaleidoscope of a pop record, brimming with hooks. Lil Nas X’s closest influence is probably Atlanta hip hop outfit Outkast, but there are traces of dozens of artists in his work – all of whom he wears enthusiastically on his sleeve. Today he samples dozens of songs, deigning to play only a few in their entirety.

His stage shows have a reputation for being exciting and inventive, and this afternoon’s Pyramid stage offering is no different. It is ridiculously high energy. Lil Nas X bursts onstage with opener “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” – a viral TikTok smash thanks to its catchy “Call me when you want” refrain. The relatively laidback “Scoop”, a collaboration with Doja Cat from Montero , provides a rare opportunity to catch your breath.

“To everybody that supports me, I love you,” purrs Lil Nas X, posing in a metal breastplate and high-waisted white slacks with fur trim. “Dead Right Now” sees him flanked by dancers wearing white cutout vests and strutting across the stage. There is a pause as something special is prepared for gargantuan hit “Old Town Road” – an independent 2018 release that created a country-rap crossover smash nobody saw coming. Lil Nas X emerges on stage astride a huge furry horse that looks like Dougal from The Magic Roundabout . He blends this into the chorus from Ginuwine’s “Pony”, gyrating across the stage, before morphing straight into “Miserlou” by Dick Dale and His Del-Tones, a track made famous by the film Pulp Fiction . Improbably, this soon becomes Nirvana’s “Something in the Way”. It’s an unusual blend of samples, and yet somehow he pulls it off.

Lil Nas X disappears for a montage of raunchy R&B and hip hop samples, stretching from Rihanna’s “S&M” to Sza’s “Big Boy” – with plenty of klaxons in between. He re-emerges after another skimpy outfit change for 2019 banger “Panini”, taken from his 2019 EP 7 . “My friends wanna shake they ass,” he tells the crowd. “But I told them, no it’s Glastonbury .”

  • Arctic Monkeys review, Glastonbury 2023: Alex Turner croons his way through crowdpleasers and subversive showmanship
  • Cat Stevens gives special shout out to Ricky Gervais during Glastonbury Legends set

A giant perambulating yeti (what else?) joins him for “That’s What I Want”. Afterwards, he snogs a backing dancer, before launching into “Lost in the Citadel”. “Industry Baby” follows, cut with “Beat It” by Michael Jackson, and Jack Harlow drops by in wraparound sunglasses for the rap in the middle eight.

If any of this sounds made up, I promise it isn’t. Lil Nas X is a Zoomer to his core; a TikTok algorithm made human, with a catalogue of bangers to match.

Sensational stuff … Elton John performs on the Pyramid stage

Caroline Polachek reviewed

Shaad D'Souza

Woodsies, 8pm

Caroline Polachek at Woodsies

I’ve seen Caroline Polachek’s Spiralling Tour twice now – tonight’s set at the Woodsies tent being the third – and it would seem that it’s only become more polished and more euphoric over the past four months. Polachek is American but her second solo album, Desire, I Want to Turn Into You, draws liberally from European pop and folk music: flamenco guitars, turn-of-the-century Eurodance, drum’n’bass, a bagpipe solo from trendy Gen Z bagpipe player Brìghde Chaimbeul

Chaimbeul joins Polachek on stage to perform her solo from the strutting, lovestruck Blood & Butter, and it’s one of a handful of triumphant moments during the evening, including a gnarled take on the 2019 track Ocean of Tears and a version of Caroline Shut Up that draws out the song’s glowing 80s-ballad vibes. Polachek’s crowd is surprisingly sparse, only filling about half the tent – perhaps indicative of just how strong the pull of Elton’s final UK show is. But those who do show up are treated to a masterclass in avant-pop performance, with Polachek showing off her sublime, acrobatic vocals. In indie music, there are few with better pipes than her – except for, perhaps, Weyes Blood, AKA Natalie Mering, who joins Polachek on stage to perform the gut-wrenching Butterfly Net. Their spectacular voices are absolutely wild to hear in person; hearing them harmonise is a balm after a big weekend. There is no doubt that next time Polachek plays on Worthy Farm, it will be to a crowd that is orders of magnitude bigger.

Elton keeps the energy high with the pure rock’n’roll euphoria of The Bitch Is Back, powered by a tickly, percussive rhythm guitar riff from Davey Johnstone, his longtime guitarist, whose relationship with Elton dates all the way back to 1971 and the Madman Across the Water album.

“I never thought I’d play Glastonbury – and here I am,” he tells this quite ridiculously massive crowd. “It’s a very special and emotional night for me as it may be my last show in England, in Great Britain.” He thanks the audience for “standing there so long – and I really appreciate all the outfits and everything!”

Elton John performs on the Pyramid Stage.

Elton kicks off!

Ben Beaumont-Thomas

Hello, Ben Beaumont-Thomas here, taking over from Keza to see you through until the bitter end. Except it should be absolutely the sweetest, most crowdpleasingest ending to a Glastonbury imaginable – Elton John playing his final tour date in the UK (I would expect that he does one-off shows, even if just charity ones, rather than this being his actual final UK gig ever). The fireworks have just been set off and he’s started!

I saw this tour in Hove back in pre-pandemic 2019 and it was superb – even if he couldn’t reach the top notes of old, his voice has aged in an interesting and potent way, adding a bit more richness to his mid-range. That set had some side quests into album tracks – I expect this setlist to be tweaked so it’s just pure balls-to-the-wall hits.

Dressed in a gold suit and rose-tinted glasses – all the better to look at the past with – Pinball Wizard is his opener, climaxing with a guitar solo vying with a flurry of noisy congas. As maximalist as you’d expect.

The War on Drugs reviewed

Other stage, 7.45pm

David Hartley and Adam Granduciel of the War on Drugs.

I’d be tempted to rechristen the War on Drugs as the War on Wildlife, because the heady boom of their impossibly loud sound mix is the only thing that fully scares away the menacing cloud of seagulls who have been feasting at the Other stage, emboldened to dive lower by the weekend’s glut of half-discarded fast food. My chips may have been pinched before I was fully ready, but the rousing Oceans of Darkness quickly distracts from my sadness, sending fists pumping into the cursed air.

The band are midway through a glorious summer of outdoorsy headliner shows at Halifax Piece Hall and Trinity College Dublin, as well as a romp across the festivals of the US, and their muscular brand of heartland rock is a knapsack that travels well. You know what you’re getting, and the guitars in particular always sound brilliant – well oiled from years of touring and collaborating right across the indie rock sphere. The crowd isn’t huge, barely reaching back as far as the sound desk, but those who are into it seem really into it. They follow the cues of subtle tempo changes: flares and rabble-rousing for the upbeat Red Eyes; a pared back sway for I Don’t Wanna Wait, a sincere ballad that twinkles with 80s synths.

The sun sets on the Other stage during The War on Drugs set

With the sun beginning to fade behind us, the whole thing should feel like cinema, a transcendent soundtrack to a road trip through desert states. At times, it does gets pretty close. But in order to channel full main character energy at a show like this, you need to be able to connect more with the lyrics. Anyone who isn’t word-for-word familiar here would struggle to decipher Adam Granduciel’s husky-toned delivery thanks to his tendency to murmur the ends of his phrases. You get tiny snatches of intriguing yearning – “I’m a victim of my own desire”; “I’ve been hiding so long”, “It’s so hard findin’ friends these days” – but they are often whipped away by the wind or drowned out by sax, missing their final illustrative flourish.

One woman near where I’m stood leaves the crowd to lie down for a nap nearby. While I don’t understand her tolerance for volume, I must say I understand the impulse. The War on Drugs’ set is musically virtuosic, bold, and ultimately quite beautiful, but a wash of sound better enjoyed at a gentle distance.

Lil Nas X reviewed

Pyramid Stage, 7pm

Lil Nas X performing on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury festival.

If you have a discography like Blondie’s, you don’t need to worry too much about anything but playing the hits. But if you’re coming to the Pyramid with only a handful of songs that most Brits know, you’re minded to put on a big production to help wow that huge crowd and carry them along with you. Lorde did this last year with her wondrous stage set; now, Lil Nas X arrives with by far the year’s most batshit and epic show on the Pyramid.

In front of a vast tableau of Hepworth-y sculptural forms, male dancers with enormously long plaits hurl their hair around as a thrash-metal arrangement of Call Me By Your Name starts up. Lil Nas X is resplendent in white fur, gold breastplate and tassled (yassled?) chaps. A giant serpent is paraded across the stage, to be succeeded later by other mythical beasts including a puppet crane and a minotaur with his tackle very much on display.

For Old Town Road, Nas rides in on a giant horse and his dancers drape themselves around it in fetchingly sexualised arrangements. Presumably deciding that his ostentatious outfit is just too conservative, he returns in a glittery blue loincloth, blue furry boots and matching kneepads. Soon he’s pashing one of his dancers. The stage floor is frequently thrust upon. Somewhere, a deeply repressed Conservative MP is drafting a tweet about how our children aren’t safe.

Nas’s dancers admirably hold the fort while he gets changed, flipping like Olympic gymnasts at a ballroom face-off to a soundtrack of trap, reggaeton and Rihanna. It’s not just the visuals that broaden the appeal. Snatches of hits such as Nirvana’s Something in the Way, Michael Jackson’s Beat It and Ginuwine’s Pony are threaded into the arrangements to keep the crowd on side. While these are deftly done, in truth his songs are strong enough to not necessarily need them. That’s What I Want is particularly good, the purity and absolute need in his wish for true love expressed in such an open-hearted, emotionally available melody.

He closes out on an even bigger high: the horn fanfare of Industry Baby. While guest rapper Jack Harlow doesn’t really get to make an impact, hampered by a slightly dodgy mic and short-form verse, we’re all distracted by the dancers, who are now dressed as electric blue majorettes – and of course Nas, his voice soaring at the climax. This must have been the most openly, ostentatiously queer show ever staged on the Pyramid, but for all the pearl-clutching that Lil Nas X induces online, in the crowd, everyone from families to chiselled gay men to lairy lads just get on with enjoying the sheer joie de vivre of this massively endearing performer.

A tip for tonight if you’re not into Queens of the Stone Age and/or there’s a lull in Elton’s set when you’re watching later: French dance-pop outfit Phoenix, playing Woodsies at 9.30pm, are supremely fun.

Established avant-pop artist Caroline Polachek has a very sparse crowd over at Woodsies, where she’s been playing for the last 20 minutes or so. The programming has not been kind to her – last year she was playing to a pretty decent audience up at the Park.

Caroline Polachek’s crowd at Glastonbury Festival 2023

Ben’s back from Lil Nas X. Jack Harlow came out for his verse on Industry Baby at the end there. Review coming soon!

Man, this War On Drugs set is such sunny, spangly, chill vibes. They’re in the middle of Red Eyes just now. Such a full sound, so very many guitar pedals. Meanwhile the crowd at the Pyramid is starting to get a little restless, reports Shaad.

The War on Drugs have just arrived on the Other stage, sounding wonderful with Oceans of Darkness. The evening is very much underway – T minus just under one hour to Elton …

Lil Nas X is taking the “Old Town Road” to Toronto. The Grammy-winning musician is at the center of documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero ,” which was filmed behind the scenes of his first tour. The doc will debut at 2023 TIFF as part of the Gala programming .

“Long Live Montero” is co-directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, both Oscar nominees. Estrada previously helmed “Blindspotting” and “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and directed music videos for Billie Eilish, Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Katy Perry, and Carly Rae Jepsen. Manuel’s cinematography and directing credits include the Academy Award-nominated “Time,” Sundance jury winner “Alone,” “America,” and “This Body.”

“Long Live Montero” is produced by RadicalMedia, the company behind Oscar-winning documentary “Summer of Soul (… Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).” The film is produced in association with Sony Music Entertainment’s (SME) Premium Content Division, Columbia Records, and Museum & Crane.

“‘ Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’ is a triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music, and identity,” TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey said. “In this groundbreaking documentary, we witness Lil Nas X challenging boundaries and reshaping the artistic landscape. The film’s captivating journey underscores the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly brings audiences together through the universal language of music. We are thrilled to host Lil Nas X at TIFF this year.”

The 2023 TIFF festival will close out with the highly-anticipated Netflix documentary “Sly” about Sylvester Stallone’s filmography and cinematic legacy.

After conquering the music world, pop superstar Lil Nas X is testing the realm of movie stardom. He’s in Toronto — attending a film festival for the first time — for the world premiere of his documentary “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero.”

The screening was delayed because of a bomb threat from a homophobic caller, but despite that scare, the mood in the Roy Thomson Theater was jubilant as the documentary finally began to play around 10:30 p.m.

Popular on Variety

Wearing sky-high heels and a slick black suit, Nas teased that he’s working on “good, fire ass music” and expressed a desire to experiment with genres like folk and Brazilian funk. He also hinted at expanding his talents beyond the mic. Would he direct a feature film? “Oh, there’s gonna be something that happens,” he coyly added.

Nas, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, is one of the biggest stars at the 48th edition of TIFF. Most of the talent from this year’s lineup of films isn’t at the festival because of the twin labor strikes that have left actors and screenwriters on the picket lines. With the exception of some projects that were granted interim agreements, which allows the talent to engage in publicity efforts, A-listers like Seth Rogen and Pete Davidson (“Dumb Money”), Anna Kendrick (“Woman of the Hour”), Nicole Kidman (“Expats”) and Natasha Lyonne (“His Three Daughters”) aren’t able to walk the red carpet or promote their films.

“I think it means a lot for people to publicly support me,” Nas said on stage. “It makes people view you differently — especially straight men. You like Lil Nas X. You must be gay or something. “

Prior to the film’s premiere Nas told Variety he hopes the documentary represents him “do(ing) my best to make the ceiling unreachable to where we can go as Black queer people.” He adds that he isn’t concerned about the reception for “Long Live Montero.” “This is one of the only times in my life where I am releasing something and I have absolutely zero expectations for it,” he said. “I’m just like, whatever happens, happens. But, you know, I hope everybody loves it. I hope everybody fucks with it.”

Since it’s a film festival, after all, Nas offered a little insight into his taste in cinema. He cited 1989’s “Back to the Future Part II” as his favorite movie, but he likes to watch “anything to do with time travel. I’m obsessed with time. You can’t get that back.” He turned to the audience. “Guys, that’s deep. You have to clap!”

Someone in the crowd then took the opportunity to ask Nas to hang out. “You know what?” the musician responded, deflecting the question. “Time is, like, precious.”

Let’s go with… not right now.

I was blessed with the opportunity to see Nasir, DMX and Lil Kim @ the Colliseum (WVU Mountaineers basketball court)in Morgantown,WV... I was right up in front row at center stage to hear one of my Top 5 favorite Hip-Hop artists and it was GREAT! Didn't care much for Lil Kim but Nasir and X made the show worth it. I got the opportunity to throw my demo up to Nas and it was taken backstage... I just wonder if he ever took the time to listen to it... Definitely a memorable concert for me

Not a fan of the venue (United Center). Nas requires a smaller venue bc his lyrics, not his energy, take precedence. The UC is for a mega popstar with a large gross allegiant fanbase (e.g. Taylor Swift, Kanye West). There's no intimacy amongst fans at the UC, either. Overall, it's a terrible place for most artists.

Nas is my favorite rapper hands down. Id love for him to perform fan hits, not billboard hits. I wish he were as daring a performer as he is a rapper. Most Nas fans dont like "Hate Me Now" or "I Know I Can" but bc theyre his biggest singles, they'll be played instead of "The Rise and Fall", or "Take It In Blood", "Blaze a 50" or how about "Wanna Play Rough?". Maybe Chicago's an awful city for an artist. It's ironic that Nas's fearless lyrics and depth of content is suppressed by his entertaining stage presence fueled by the need for "Mass Appeal".

This was one of the most epic events I've EVER attended! Nas by himself is enough! But, couple this legendary icon with the infamous Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Wallah, magic has taken place! He performed his 1st album with the Symphony in chronological order which was so melodic. Then once he finished illmatic the symphony cleared the stage and gave a helluva encore by performing all his mainstream hits and even a couple of his newer tracks from Nasir ( his newest album to date). To say I was pleased is an understatement! I was enthralled!!! Nas will forever be a class act in my eyes!

Kevin Abstract and Lil Nas X team up for sultry new single ‘Tennessee’

The duo previously teased the track at Coachella

Kevin Abstract and Lil Nas X have teamed up for their sultry new collaboration ‘Tennessee’ – listen to it down below.

The former Brockhampton member has released his song featuring Lil Nas X after the pair previously teased the collaborating at Abstract’s Coachella set.

In the song, the pair rap about a lover who they met in Tennessee: “Meet him out in Tennessee / He don’t know his ancestry / Which is kinda hot to me / He loves me for me, me, for me, all of me”.

According to  Consequence , Abstract said of Lil Nas X at Coachella that he was “very lucky to know him and to be existing at the same time as him.” The duo also previously attended the same high school in Georgia, though they didn’t know each other at the time.

Take a listen to ‘Tennessee’ below:

Kevin Abstract’s Coachella set also saw a surprise appearance from Sky Ferreira, who covered Lady A’s ‘Need You Now’ whilst opening for him. Her cover was later revealed to be produced by  Quadeca , who joined Abstract later on stage along with  Dominic Fike .

The musician last released music in November last year, where  NME  rated ‘ Blanket ‘ three stars: ‘Blanket’ feels like another piece of the grand puzzle that is Kevin Abstract, and though it might not be his strongest material – heartfelt, for sure – he remains an alluring figure, a lightning rod for ideas. He is, reliably, never dull.”

Lil Nas X Is Unrecognizable in Silver Body Paint and Bejeweled Cat Mask at Met Gala 2023

Lil nas x blew fans away in a bejeweled cat-inspired look at 2023 met gala. see how he honored the theme of "karl lagerfeld: a line of beauty" with a nod to the late designer's cat choupette..

Now, this one is for the champions.   For his grand appearance at the 2023 Met Gala on May 1, the "Industry Baby" singer once again made quite a splash when he arrived on the red carpet. The 24-year-old blew fans away when he showed up painted head-to-toe in silver while rocking a bejeweled thong and matching platform heels. ( See all the celebrities on the Met Gala 2023 red carpet here .)

In honor of the party's theme of " Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty ," Lil Nas X rocked a cat mask studded with sparkling jewels and pearls as a nod to the late designer's beloved cat, Choupette .

Lil Nas X's outfit for the evening easily rivals the looks he pulled off for his first ever Met Gala appearance in 2021 . For that event, the singer made it known that he was there to serve when he unveiled an ensemble that included  three different Versace looks.   If you need a reminder of why his entrance was also good as gold that year, let's do a quick recap: He started off with him wearing a regal cape fit for royalty , which he then removed to reveal a gold-armor outfit. As for the third piece, he shined a gold sequined full-length bodysuit.

And although his outfits spoke for themselves, Versace also broke down the meaning behind each piece. According to the luxe fashion house, the rapper's gorgeous choices "told a three-part LGBTQ+ American fairytale."

The brand noted on Instagram that Lil Nas X "arrived on the red carpet in a dramatic cape that exudes regality and represents concealing one's true self. The cape was then shed to reveal gleaming Medusa-adorned armor, a symbol of protection from the prejudices faced as a Black, queer person. Finally, the armor is removed to reveal a skin-tight bodysuit that represents living life as your true, unguarded self."   Or as Lil Nas X simply told host Keke Palmer , "It was royalty at first, then we got to the armor, then we got really sexy."
