British & Irish Lions Announce Itinerary For 2025 Australia Tour

The British & Irish Lions have today released the nine-match schedule for the 2025 tour to Australia, including three Test matches against the Wallabies.

Two years out from the tour, it has been confirmed that the eagerly-awaited Test clashes will take place on July 19, July 26 and August 2. The Tests will take place in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney respectively.

The British & Irish Lions will travel throughout Australia with games being held in some of the most impressive stadiums in world sport.

The Lions will begin the tour in Perth against the Western Force before facing fellow Australian Super Rugby Pacific sides, the Queensland Reds, the NSW Waratahs, and the ACT Brumbies.

The Lions will continue their preparation for the first Test by facing an invitational Australian and New Zealand team in a clash at the Adelaide Oval.

Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium will host the first Test on Saturday, July 19. Following this, a midweek warm-up fixture against the Melbourne Rebels will take place at Marvel Stadium on Tuesday, July 22.

The second Test will be played on Saturday, July 26 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which has a capacity of 100,000. A potential sell-out crowd at the renowned venue would be a record for a Lions Test, and also one of the highest attendances at a rugby match in history.

The final Test will be played in front of over 80,000 fans at Sydney’s Accor Stadium in Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday, August 2.

A strong partnership and a common goal between the British & Irish Lions, Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship has resulted in the Lions having a two-week preparation period before the tour commences.

That gives the Lions the best chance of regaining the Series on Australian soil, a country where they enjoyed their last tour win in 2013. Further detail around pre-tour activities, including a pre-tour warm-up fixture, will be announced at a later stage.

Details on the tour schedule follow the announcement of major commercial partners for the tour, with the British & Irish Lions recently confirming global rugby brand Canterbury as official kit provider and the global insurance group Howden as official front of shirt/jersey sponsor.

Confectionery brand Cadbury’s and sportswear manufacturer Asics will continue as the Wallabies official front of shirt and kit partners.

The 2025 tour to Australia promises to be one of the most eagerly-anticipated tours in history considering the absence of fans for the 2021 tour of South Africa.

Supporters who want to be part of the greatest experience in rugby can guarantee their place for ticket-inclusive travel packages to Australia with the British & Irish Lions’ own travel company, Lions Rugby Travel .

Priority access passes are on sale now, which will ensure a priority window on packages when they become available.

Passes are fully refundable should you choose not to travel and come off your final balance when you book. To purchase passes or for more information, visit http://www.lionsrugby.com/tours.

Ben Calveley , CEO of the British & Irish Lions, commented: “We are delighted to announce the tour schedule today as we look ahead to what is to be one of the most eagerly anticipated Series in history.

“I want to take the opportunity to thank Rugby Australia for the strong level of collaboration in planning for this tour and we look forward to continuing to work with them over the next two years.

“I would also like to thank Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship, whose cooperation has resulted in the longest preparation period for a tour in recent history, which gives us the best possible chance of a Series victory. We look forward to continuing to work with our hosts and our partners to create one of the best tours ever.

“As we begin the countdown to Australia in 2025, the British & Irish Lions brand and organisation has never been stronger with a global fan base of some 14 million people, a significant following and strong level of engagement through our various digital platforms, and a wide range of commercial partners comprised of some of the biggest brands and organisations in the world.

“Our ambition is to further build upon this position and make this upcoming tour the greatest Lions tour ever, positioning it as the major global sporting event of 2025.”

lions tour 2025 schedule

Ieuan Evans , Chairman of the British & Irish Lions, added: “British & Irish Lions tours are unique in the world of sport, both in terms of the ultimate challenge they represent and the cultural impact they have.

“Lions tours to Australia have always been memorable occasions, and the 2025 tour promises to be no different. I know how special it is to pull on that famous red jersey in Australia, having toured there during the 1989 tour.

“What I have learned from those special games is how important the fans are to roaring us on to victory so to be able to announce ticket package details is very exciting.

Being a part of the British & Irish Lions means being able to unite and inspire through extraordinary rugby experiences, and working closely with our host partners in Rugby Australia, we believe that we can provide an epic tour that will be a global sporting event not to be missed.”

Commenting on the announcement, Rugby Australia CEO, Phil Waugh, said: “The British & Irish Lions tour is one of the great sporting festivals – it is a real landmark of Australian and world sport.

“Rugby Australia is looking forward to welcoming back the Lions for the first time in 12 years, as well as the tens of thousands of Lions fans from the northern hemisphere.

“It is an exciting schedule of matches all around the country with the Lions taking on our Super Rugby franchises, three massive Test matches, and a marquee match in Adelaide featuring a combined invitational Australia-New Zealand side.”

The British & Irish Lions will lock horns with Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on their 2025 tour and seek to set a record crowd of 100,000 at the iconic venue.

The Lions have announced their schedule for the tour in two years’ time, which includes Tests in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, five matches against Australia’s five Super Rugby sides as well as a fixture against an invitational Australia and New Zealand combined side.

The Lions are also lining up a warm-up match before arriving in Australia - in 2021, prior to the tour of South Africa, they hosted Japan at Murrayfield - meaning the 2025 trip is set to be restored to 10 fixtures in total, as was the case in 2017.

The tour of South Africa comprised just eight matches - plus the Japan fixture - but following a historic agreement between the Lions and the Premiership clubs, the tourists will have considerable more preparation time for a bigger schedule. After the Premiership agreed to move its final forward, the Lions will have a full two weeks together and England-based players will be available from the onset.

The United Rugby Championship has traditionally been more accommodating but four years ago, with no agreement reached with the Premiership, the warm-up match against Japan took place on the same day as the Premiership final, much to the league’s frustration. Furthermore, Warren Gatland - head coach on the last three tours - has spoken of how the Premiership’s intransigence has counted against English players for selection in the past.

The British & Irish Lions chief executive, Ben Calveley, said: “I would like to thank Premiership Rugby and the United Rugby Championship, whose cooperation has resulted in the longest preparation period for a tour in recent history, which gives us the best possible chance of a series victory.”

The first match in Australia will take place against the Western Force in Perth on 28 June with a further four quick-fire matches before the first Test in Brisbane on 19 July. The Lions will then face the Melbourne Rebels three days later and four days before the second Test at the MCG before concluding the series at Sydney’s Olympic stadium.

2025 Lions Tour to Australia

• 28 June , Lions vs Western Force, Perth (Optus Stadium)

• 2 July , Lions vs Queensland Reds, Brisbane (Suncorp Stadium)

• 5 July, Lions vs NSW Waratahs, Sydney (Allianz Stadium)

• 9 July , Lions vs ACT Brumbies, Canberra (GIO Stadium)

• 12 July , Lions vs Invitational AU & NZ, Adelaide (Adelaide Oval)

• 19 July, 1st Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Brisbane (Suncorp Stadium)

• 22 July , Lions vs Melbourne Rebels, Melbourne (Marvel Stadium)

• 26 July , 2nd Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Melbourne (Melbourne Cricket Ground/MCG)

• 2 Aug , 3rd Test, Lions vs Wallabies, Sydney (Accor Stadium)

The match against the Rebels allows for a bumper tour but, interestingly, there was no midweek fixture in South Africa once the 2021 series had started with Gatland insisting it caused too many problems and meant for a bloated squad. The Rebels fixture therefore raises the prospect of a situation similar to 2017 when a handful of players dubbed the Geography Six were drafted into New Zealand at short notice so that frontline players could be rested.

After playing out the 2021 tour in empty stadiums, however, the onus is on bumper ticket sales for the 2025 trip. The MCG has a capacity of 100,024 and combined with Sydney (82,000) and Brisbane (52,500), the forthcoming tour is on course to eclipse the 192,972 combined attendance who saw the Lions’ three Tests against the Wallabies in 2013.

Meanwhile, Marcus Smith has delivered England head coach Steve Borthwick a major boost by signing a new Harlequins contract amid considerable interest from France.

after newsletter promotion

Smith was out of contract in 2024 and was attracting interest from Racing 92, who are looking for a marquee fly-half signing after losing Finn Russell to Bath. Smith was thought to be exploring his options having lost his place in the England starting XV during the Six Nations but Borthwick is expected to include him in his World Cup squad.

The England head coach will also look for Smith to be a key part of his post-World Cup plans and with the Rugby Football Union digging its heels in over its ruling that players based abroad are not eligible for selection, the 24-year-old’s new deal will be welcomed by Borthwick.

“I love the club,” said Smith. “It’s been my home since the age of 14 and I want to repay the faith shown in me and help Quins win trophies.”

By contrast, wing Jack Nowell completed a move to European champions La Rochelle yesterday. The 30-year-old, capped 46 times by England, leaves Exeter after 12 years. He had already made himself unavailable for this autumn’s World Cup.

Lions, Premiership, URC announce partnership

Lions Tours: 0

Ellis Genge progressively got better throughout the Six Nations and it culminated in a brilliant scrummaging performance against France's Uini Atonio.

Atonio has six, yes six, stone on Genge but the England man worked hard, got low, and showed what an asset he can be in that front row.

He is also a leader in the England camp and a voice like that will be essential for life on Tour.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso

Feyi-Waboso

Position: Wing. Centre

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso made quite the impression in the few games he played for England, his start against Ireland cementing him as a real future star.

Ireland could not figure out how to stop his combination of power and pace and if he can continue to grow in the England shirt, he will be a certain name on Farrell's list for 2025.

Ollie Lawrence

England's Ollie Lawrence (centre) is tackled by France's Thomas Ramos (left) during the Guinness Six Nations match at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France. Picture date: Saturday March 16, 2024.

Position: Centre

Another man who had a tournament to remember, when Ollie Lawrence came back into the England side, he showed why he is lethal in that centre position.

He can play any role required - if you need him running hard lines he will, but if you need him using his brute strength to power up the field, he will also do that in abundance.

If he is partnered with a certain Ireland centre, it could be a sensational combination.

Jamie Gibson-Park

Ireland's scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park

Position: Scrum-half

Ultimately, Jamie Gibson-Park is the best scrum-half out there for the Lions at the moment.

His consistency for Ireland is second to none, and his kicking game and match awareness have been integral to the Ireland system that has seen them dominate so much.

A calm head is always needed in such a vital role and Gibson-Park can fulfil that for Farrell.

Ireland Six Nations

Lions Tours: 1 (2021)

Why wouldn't you put this guy on the plane? His sensational World Cup performance plus his performance at the Six Nations would have Bundee Aki down as a dead cert starter for the Lions at the moment.

His ability to make metres is not matched by any worldwide and he will be a lot for Australia to handle.

It could also be exciting to see him partner someone like Lawrence who also has power and pace.

Jack Crowley

Crowley

Position: Fly-half

A reward for a seamless transition, Jack Crowley can be a solid fly-half option for the Lions.

He has an old head on young shoulders and is never fazed when he makes a mistake, plus he can kick goals like the best of them.

Not many could step into Johnny Sexton's shoes and perform and he did that brilliantly for Ireland.

Finn Russell

Scotland's Finn Russell kicks a penalty

Finn Russell will always bring that flair and you know on a Lions Tour he would enjoy himself creatively on the pitch.

Right now, he is probably the most experienced and in-form fly-half option for the Lions and combined with some other big stars, we could see some Russell flair on show.

He also is a sensational goal kicker and that will be vital for Farrell's side.

lions tour 2025 schedule

Duhan Van der Merwe

Duhan Van der Merwe's hat-trick gave Scotland a solid lead in the contest

Position: Wing

A man who can create something spectacular all on his own, Duhan Van der Merwe showed why his pace and power on the wing is pretty much unmatched.

There are not many as big as him who can show individual finesse like he does and he already has a solid understanding with Russell that could serve the Lions well in 2025.

Zander Fagerson

Scotland's Zander Fagerson (centre) scores their first try during the Guinness Six Nations match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy. Picture date: Saturday March 9, 2024.

Fagerson is one of the few players in these picks who went on the 2021 Lions Tour. However, he did not play.

The Glasgow Warriors prop has battled against the best of them and could be a solid option off the bench when that front row needs a new breath of life.

Mason Grady

Mason Grady made his mark in Wales' final game against Italy

Position: Centre, Wing

Mason Grady didn't get a whole host of minutes across the Six Nations, but when he did grace the field, Grady sparkled.

Scoring in the dying moments of their clash vs Italy, Grady showed that he offers something different with his dazzling footwork and could be someone that Farrell could take on Tour as the Lions look to the future.

George North's iconic moment for British and Irish Lions against Australia

Dafydd Jenkins

Dafydd Jenkins could get some big leadership lessons on a British and Irish Lions Tour

Position: Lock

The one thing a young captain needs is experience and quickly and a Lions Tour could offer the perfect environment for Wales skipper Dafydd Jenkins to grow.

It would be a vital opportunity for him to use his own voice but learn from other huge leaders across the nations as Wales continue their rebuilding journey.

Aaron Wainwright

Aaron Wainwright was one of Wales' standout performers in a difficult Six Nations

Position: No 8, Flanker

Aaron Wainwright was one of Wales' standout players in the Six Nations, making metres like no other in that Wales jersey.

His energy was electric and his enthusiasm even when under the pump could be a key asset for the Lions.

The fifth nation: The exiles available

Owen farrell.

Stuart Lancaster: Owen Farrell excited by French challenge

Position: Fly-half, Centre

Lions Tours: 3

Although the former England captain may be out of contention for international selection with his move to Racing 92 imminent, he can very much still be picked for the Lions Tour.

As England's top points scorer ever and with three Tours under his belt, his experience could be invaluable and what a storyline it would be to see father and son in action.

lions tour 2025 schedule

Courtney Lawes

Lawes on Lions

Position: Lock, Flanker

Lions Tours: 2

Lawes retired from international duty after the 2023 Rugby World Cup,but he made sure to make clear that he still sees starring for the Lions in his future.

With a year out in France to come, Lawes could earn himself a shirt and when someone with 105 caps comes knocking, it is hard to turn them down.

Henry Arundell

Henry Arundell

Position: Full-back, wing

Henry Arundell was originally given a special exemption to represent England after London Irish went into administration, but after making his move to Racing 92 permanent, Arundell has locked his door to international duty for now.

However, Arundell has been a constant star and his pace at the back could be huge for the Lions if they come calling.

He knows how to score tries and in a Lions shirt, he could thrive.

Detroit Lions against Houston Texans

Why 2025 Super Bowl Must Feature Detroit Lions against Houston Texans

Two teams had different approach to free agency this offseason.

  • Author: John Maakaron

In this story:

I just need to see it.

The answers to a growing debate lie in a Super Bowl 59 matchup between the Detroit Lions and Houston Texans.

This offseason, the Lions continued their approach of targeting players who meet the exact criteria the front office and coaching has decided will be deployed when targeting external free agents.

Detroit did not target high-priced, big-name free agents that several fans would have raved about.

Holmes and Co. did not feel trading draft capital and giving Kansas City Chiefs cornerback L'Jarius Sneed a long-term contract was in the best interests of the organization .

Houston, meanwhile, just traded for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Texans general manager Nick Caserio has clearly pushed the chips into the middle of the table, with the hopes of capitalizing on a successful 2023 season.

Notably, Houston also signed veteran defensive linemen Danielle Hunter, Denico Autry and traded for running back Joe Mixon in free agency.

Two opposing views are clearly on display.

A Super Bowl matchup would answer which general manager made the right decisions in free agency and help to settle if drafting and developing is the best strategy to win or is going "all-in" the right approach when the opportunity presents itself.

Holmes has remained steadfast in his belief that his method is one that will reward Lions' fans with a Lombardi Trophy and will sustain success over a long period of time.

. @DetroitPodcast shared his thoughts on the difference between the Houston Texans and the Detroit Lions regarding their Free Agency approach. #OnePride How long is the Detroit #Lions window for success open for? pic.twitter.com/4NGfsow0pW — Crunch Time with Jeff Iafrate & Booner (@officialctpod) April 4, 2024

“Just feel really good. And, you know, our number one choices, that’s our number one choices. There’s 31 other teams, 31 other boards. Our number one choices are probably not those other number one choices," Holmes told Fox 2 at the annual league meetings. "But it’s for our palate, and those were our number one choices.

Holmes continued, "I have a lot of faith and conviction in our process because we go through every single scenario. We go through the, man, ‘Do we add just this one $30 million player?’ We go through that scenario. We look at that and we go, ‘That’s just not gonna make sense for us for right now and the future.’ So we go through all of it and the best scenario for us and the players that we truly wanted, being able to get it, but it surely came from the preparation process.”

Admittedly, I am jealous of the Texans and their free agency approach .

It is not to say the Texans will automatically get past all the powerhouses in the AFC and be handed a Super Bowl win.

But other teams, like the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams, have used free agency and trade deadline deals to upgrade their rosters ahead of strong playoff pushes and Super Bowl wins.

Holmes has earned the benefit of the doubt, but 2024 will be a crucial litmus test for an organization that just appeared in the NFC Championship game.

“It’s the best player for us. It’s kind of what I was saying about the free agency. Yeah, we were able to get our plan A’s for us. We will get the best player for us, and that’s what’s so great about the draft, it’s 31 other teams," said Holmes. "The best player for us may not be the best player for those other teams.

"But if you look at it from a behavioral economics standpoint, if you’re shopping for some wine, the most expensive bottle of wine may not be the best tasting wine for your palate. You know? What’s the best tasting wine for our palate? That’s how we operate. We don’t really care what anybody else thinks. That’s how we operate and we’re gonna continue to go.”

The two teams have taken different approaches, but eventually could wind up competing against each other for the ultimate prize.

A matchup in the regular season could garner added attention or be slotted in primetime, as both figure to have winning records by the time they square off against each other in Houston.

While the Texans have won the offseason and garnered a lot of positive headlines, Detroit could have their opportunity to cement their legacy by capping off their rebuild with a Super Bowl win over the emerging AFC squad.

Though they are taking different avenues, the Lions and Texans are hopefully on a collision course to next year's Super Bowl.
