ABOUT LIZZO

A 3x GRAMMY® Award-winning singer, songwriter, rapper, actress, and so much more, Lizzo has shifted the sound, soul, and spirit of popular music and culture. 2019’s now-classic, RIAA platinum certified debut album,  CUZ I LOVE YOU , bowed at #4 on the Billboard 200, fueled in part by such history-making hits as the platinum certified “Tempo (Feat. Missy Elliott),” the 2x platinum “Juice,” the 4x platinum “Good As Hell,” and the 7x platinum “Truth Hurts.” The latter of which ascended to #1 on  Billboard ’s “Hot 100,” affirming Lizzo as only the third female rapper to top the chart without a featured artist, as well as the first black solo female R&B singer to claim the top spot since 2012. “Truth Hurts” dominated the chart for seven weeks, further making history as the longest running #1 by a solo female rap artist ever. Named by Rolling Stone as one of the “500 Greatest Songs Of All Time,” “Truth Hurts” went on to earn a 2020 GRAMMY® Award for “Best Pop Solo Performance,” with  CUZ I LOVE YOU (DELUXE)  receiving that year’s GRAMMY® for “Best Urban Contemporary Album” and “Jerome” earning “Best Traditional R&B Performance.”

Crowned 2019’s “Entertainer of the Year” by both  TIME  and  Entertainment Weekly , Lizzo has adorned the covers of countless publications around the globe, spanning  Rolling Stone ,  Billboard ,  Elle ,  British Vogue , and many more. Among her many unforgettable TV appearances, Lizzo has lit up the stage at the American Music Awards, the MTV Video Music Awards, the BET Awards,  Saturday Night Live , and an epic opening performance at the GRAMMYs, to name just a few. Expanding her imprint and influence across media, Lizzo lent her voice to the 2019 animated film, UglyDolls , and joined Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu, Julia Stiles, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart, and Cardi B in the all-star cast of that same year’s critically acclaimed  Hustlers .

Lizzo maintained this unstoppable momentum on 2021’s RIAA gold certified “ Rumors (Feat. Cardi B) ” and is now set to create her biggest, boldest, and brightest revolution thus far with her massively anticipated second full-length offering  SPECIAL  for Nice Life Recording Company/Atlantic Records, due July 15 th .

Lizzo’s “Special Tour” Showcases All of Her (Many) Talents: Review

A visibly moved Lizzo returned to the stage Friday night for the debut show on her “Special Tour” (get tickets here ), a 28-date jaunt in support of her latest studio album, Special . Part variety show spectacle, part megachurch empowerment retreat, the performance showcased all of Lizzo’s special talents, from powerhouse singing, to flute playing, to motivational speaking and choreo slaying.

“My name is Lizzo, and welcome to the first night of my very first arena tour,” she said proudly in one of many moments when deep gratitude registered on her face as she paused to take in the rapturous screams of thousands. Before the stage lights blinked on and opener “The Sign” blared over the sound system, a voiceover of the singer set the heartening tone for the evening.

“I really believe that love for oneself and for others is what this world needs to be a better place,” she said in what would become the first of many motivational tangents of the evening. “If you can just take the time to give a little love to yourself every single day, treat yourself with respect, treat yourself the way you deserve to be treated, treat somebody else with that same love and respect — that expands, that grows, and that can save a life.”

As the last few words echoed, the singer emerged from the stage floor in a shimmering blue cutout bodysuit and matching eyeshadow. Still clutching her chest in a wordless expression of appreciation, she launched into “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” as her dancers, The Big Grrrls, dashed onto the stage dressed in bright Barbiecore pink.

Recalling Beyoncé’s early solo tours, Lizzo’s stage was dominated by women, from the band to the backup singers, dancers, and DJ. An extensive guitar solo introduced the brilliant “Tempo,” during which The Big Grrrls showed out with an invigatoring freestyle dance-off.

“Am I turning thick girls into hos, or am I turning thick girls into Emmy winners?” Lizzo laughed into the mic, nodding to her recent Emmy win for reality dance competition Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls , which has thrust the multi-hyphenate performer into the EGOT conversation. The “Special Tour” goes a long way to make the case that she has the chops to get there.

At the very least, the show proves Lizzo would absolutely crush a Vegas residency. Once a retirement plan for past-their-prime performers, the form has been reinvented in recent years by powerhouse pop stars like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars — performers who, like Lizzo, are able to draw upon a multitude of talents to craft a show that goes well beyond the traditional song and dance.

For Lizzo, one of those skills is, of course, her flute playing. The flute materialized late into the set — 21 songs in, for a solo on “Coldplay.” It made its entrance in spectacular fashion, rising out of the stage floor on a studded museum stand, bathed in the center-stage spotlight.

“She’s very expensive, so she just came out for this one song,” Lizzo said, placing it back on the glimmering stand before asking the crowd to bid adieu to the flute with a signature Lizzo “bye, bitch!” as it lowered into the stage floor.

The flute returned a few times, however — even Lizzo’s flute gets an encore — including for “Truth Hurts,” during which Lizzo replicated the solo she played on her breakthrough 2019 BET Awards performance of the song. During one particularly touching moment, a poster reading “Sign my flute, Lizzo” caught the singer’s attention in the stands. She asked the fan — a 17-year-old named Jessi — to bring her flute down to the stage. “I think I might make that a thing,” she said as she autographed the case. “Bring your flutes — I’ll sign ‘em bitch!”

Beyond the evening’s affirmation exercises (multiple video interludes asked fans to repeat to themselves, “I love you, you’re beautiful, and you can do anything”), the flutist fan interaction was demonstrative of the way Lizzo goes out of her way to make fans feel seen — literally. She made a point of spotlighting particular outfits and posters from fans high up in the stands. She shouted out one fan wearing her Yitty shapewear brand, and another wearing a Harry Styles shirt. “Hizzo” signs — a portmanteau of Harry Styles and Lizzo, alluding to their mutual admiration and friendship — dotted the arena, and she mentioned those, too. “There are no nosebleeds [seats] at a Lizzo show,” she affirmed.

There were welcome surprises, including covers of Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” and Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing),” the latter of which she samples on Special ’s “Break Up Twice.” She also referenced the treacherous state of abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, knowing affirmations are empty platitudes if they’re not backed by political and public action. Dressed in a flesh-colored bodysuit during “Naked,” the words “My Body, My Choice” were projected onto her frame. “I know that we’re in Florida,” she added later, “so there’s one thing I would love to say: Gay.”

Closing the main set with “Good as Hell,” she returned to play “Juice” and “About Damn Time” as the encore. She took out her earpiece to listen to the adoring crowd and offered some parting words: “Thank you for loving me and accepting me for who I am — for accepting me in this beautiful, perfect body. I want you to know that if you can love me, you can love your damn self, okay? A little action every single day will make it easier, I promise you. I was going through it when I dropped Cuz I Love You . And now I’m here and I’m realizing that I’m special. And you’re special.”

“Am I ready to be loved?” Lizzo sings on Special . The supporting tour’s opening show offered a resounding yes, but the performance achieved a higher mission: it gave everyone in the audience permission to love themselves first.

The “Special Tour” runs through the middle of November, visiting more than 20 cities. Get tickets here .

‘This is our moment together’: Lizzo kicks off Australian tour with spectacular, celebratory joy

RAC Arena, Perth In Perth for the first time, the pop star pulled out all the stops – and the flute – for her Special tour that’s all about power, inclusivity and love

  • Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

It’s a sea of sequins and glitter among the audience. The lights go down, and neon red letters fill the screen: “THIS IS A SHOW ABOUT LOVE.”

Lizzo fans, of course, already know what they’re in for: deft lyricism, boundless warmth and pure joy. The US pop star’s last tour, Cuz I Love You Too at the start of 2020, didn’t make it to Perth; for Australia’s west coast, it’s been a long wait.

Friday night at the RAC Arena marks the first Australian show on her Special tour, and her voice fills the room almost instantly, opening with Cuz I Love You. In black leather, under a spectacle of bright red lights, she’s soulful and she’s a force: flanked on either side by her dancers, but undoubtedly the centrepiece.

The crowd is largely women, of all ages and ethnicities, many in their own sparkling outfits. There are rhinestone fringes, metallic streamers in the hair, a mother and daughter with fairy lights wrapped around themselves, and pink – so much pink. Juice and 2 Be Loved ring out across the stadium, before Lizzo speaks to us directly: “When was the last time you said something kind about yourself?” she asks. “It’s been too damn long!”

Lizzo performing in Perth, Australia on 14 July at RAC Arena.

Visually, the show is a delight from the beginning. At times it’s pure fun, like the neon line drawings that accompany the first half of the setlist, accordingly upbeat; elsewhere, we get artful videos of Lizzo herself, celebratory in their beauty. She launches into Soulmate, giving each of her dancers their own moment to shine, before a tidy segue into Grrrls and a thumping rendition of Boys.

For Tempo, the lights dim, the vibe gets sultry, and the dancers don’t hold back. The song features Missy Elliott in the recording; on stage, Elliott sends Lizzo an audio message: “You’re going to be around for a very, very, very long time.” Though there are 15,000 of us in the crowd, there’s an intimacy that feels rare for a show of this size. Lizzo is taking us into her world. “This is our moment together,” she tells us. “I want you to say ‘I’m special’,” prefacing her song of the same name.

Sign up for the fun stuff with our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Saturday morning

And yet, Lizzo herself knows not everyone can be a fan. When she plays Rumors, comments from the internet fill the screen behind her through brightly coloured chat bubbles, ranging from the maddeningly common – “Is that a BBL?,” “She’s prettier in person” – to the comical – “Lizzo parties in the Bermuda triangle,” “Lizzo played an alien flute at Area 51.” Cardi B joins us for her verse – through a video selfie played on a screen, as though she’s FaceTiming into the room. As Like a Girl begins, Lizzo gestures to her spectacularly bejeweled microphone stand: “I want you to think of this as your ex,” she says, and kicks it to the ground.

Lizzo performing in Perth, Australia on 14 July at RAC Arena.

Halfway through, we’re taken through a meditation, beginning with a guided breathing exercise, and ending with an affirmation: “I am free.” Lizzo references the meditation later on: “Did it make you feel better? … I’m back here doing it too, visualising my higher self, loving on my higher self. I can come here and sing you songs, but if you don’t leave here feeling better, then I didn’t do my job!”

As the lights go down, footage of Lizzo fills the screen, showcasing her body. “My body is beautiful,” she narrates. “My body is nobody’s business.” Purple smoke fills the room, and she re-emerges in a shimmering gold dress for Jerome. Lizzo is vocally resplendent, effortlessly hitting every note and run; she belts, she growls, she kneels to the stage to close the song. For her song Coldplay, she brings out the flute – the instrument she’s been classically trained in, mastering since childhood – and the notes float through the air. As the crowd lights up the venue, waving their phones, she tells us: “This light represents the love you have for yourself.” It’s a tender interlude, but she’s back to her usual pace soon enough. “Should we play more flute?” she asks, and the response is the loudest of the night.

Lizzo delivers with a virtuosic solo before leading into Truth Hurts, which remains the longest-running No 1 song by a solo female rap artist on the Billboard charts in history. The energy in the room is rapturous. At one point, she’s twerking and playing the flute simultaneously without missing a beat, and the crowd is, in millennial speak, here for it .

after newsletter promotion

“It’s about to get funky in here,” she calls out, belting Chaka Khan’s I’m Every Woman, and into Everybody’s Gay. Rainbow lights frame the stage, and rainbow silhouettes echo her moves. On stage, Lizzo drapes herself in a flag with colours representing the LGBTQIA+ community, with the notable inclusion of brown and black stripes – Daniel Quasar’s Progress Pride flag, designed in 2015 to include and celebrate the trans community and people of colour. She dedicates this one to the queer women, and the trans women.

Notable throughout the show is the emphasis on Lizzo’s band and her dancers; she gives ample time to each individual performer, in moments that make for some of the most impressive of the night. Her inclusivity extends to the rapt room around her. She summons a flute for an audience member, a flautist, who performs a rendition of Down Under for Lizzo from the floor. She sings Birthday Girl to a birthday girl. “Ain’t no such thing as nosebleeds, baby! I love you!” she yells to those at the back – complimenting outfits, reading homemade signs (“Oh, baby, your ‘P’ is upside down.” It’s promptly turned up the right way.). She directs the cameras to a lady dressed in a hot pink cloud dress, layers of tulle, to tell her she looks beautiful.

Lizzo closes the show with the four-times platinum Good as Hell, before returning for an encore with About Damn Time. As the crowd pours out of the arena, buzzing and beaming, there’s no doubt that Lizzo did her job tonight. It was a show about love, and that love flowed both ways.

Lizzo’s tour continues this month in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland. She is also headlining Splendour in the Grass , which kicks off in Byron Bay on 21 July

Lizzo on The Special Tour Outfits Creativity and Wardrobe Malfunctions

It is so easy to love Lizzo. Whether she's on or off the stage, the Grammy-award-winning artist continues to show us why she's a force to be reckoned with in music, fashion, and beyond — and even sometimes in the intersection of it all. Case in point: Her The Special Tour .

For all of her performances while on tour, Lizzo wore dazzling full-body catsuits designed in partnership with  Yitty 's head designer Kara Lacayo and hand-stoned by crystal artist Disco Daddy. The catsuits feature materials and colors which are part of the in-line Yitty collection. Yitty,  launched in early 2022 , is the artist's brand focused on bringing life to the shapewear industry. Since its inception, Yitty has focused on bright colors, patterns, and size-inclusive options.

Lizzo  and her team crafted the suits for her tour, focusing on support and comfort. And when you're putting on a dance-heavy performance the way Lizzo is, you'd need to make sure your costumes are up for the job. Teen Vogue caught up with Lizzo to chat about fashion, her favorite tour looks, and what her HBO documentary following her life and career has meant to her.

Teen Vogue : I watched your documentary over Thanksgiving break with my family and I loved how your performances are all created in your mind! Is it a similar process for the outfits you wanted to wear on tour or what was that process for you?

Lizzo:  That's the most difficult for me to see. In almost every other area of my career, I have a vision for every single thing, down to an edit of a television show or an award show performance. And for some odd reason, [for] my stage looks, I draw a blank. My thing is all about references — iconic references — and stuff. So I'm just like, "What do I feel like showing?" A few years ago, when I first started wearing the dance leotards and stuff on stage back in 2014, my reference was Beyoncé. I'm like, "Oh, she's so iconic." And I'm a dancer now. So dancers do the leotards. But I think, lately, I've been trying to find new silhouettes for the stage, which is hard to do because we are still dancers. I think this time, I was really lucky to have Yitty. [Kara] helped me come up with that really cool, iconic, bedazzled bodysuit.

Lizzo on The Special Tour Outfits Creativity and Wardrobe Malfunctions

TV : Were there any key factors for you when figuring out how the leotards and designs needed to fit on your body because of all the choreography and movement you guys were doing?

Lizzo: There's a lot of thought that goes into the design and the fit. Making sure things are cheekier for when we do our little butt shakes and making sure things are durable so when we lift our arms up, it's stretchy and all of that. There's a lot of thought that goes into that part.

TV : Do you have any tour fashion faux pas?

Lizzo: There are a few things where I'm like, "Never again." For sure. I don't like to wear too much jewelry, because I know if I'm dancing, it'll fly, so never too much. Also, I went through a period where I was wearing heels on stage, never again, completely fucked up my knees. It's not worth it. I can do this shit in boots. You know what I mean?

TV : What was your favorite look on tour?

Lizzo: I still have to say my Yitty one-piece bodysuit that was hand-crystalled with the Yitty tattoo on the ass. It was perfect. I wish I was wearing that right now!

Lizzo on The Special Tour Outfits Creativity and Wardrobe Malfunctions

TV : Did you ever have a wardrobe malfunction while on tour? How did it happen and were there any on the fly decisions in updating the costumes?

Lizzo: We've definitely had some wardrobe malfunctions. I don't even know if I should mention one of them! People might even be able to see it because my leotard on the last night of the tour for “Special,” when I changed into the bedazzled bodysuit, it completely popped open. So they had to tie it up, literally sew it on my body. I don't even know why that happened. I didn't even do anything for it to pop open. I think maybe I was hugging people or something, but it was just wild. So I did the rest of the show that way with it popped. Thank goodness my hair was long because it kind of covered it.

TV : I know just from what I've seen, you're always killing it fashion-wise. I don't know if that's something you've always been interested in, but what does fashion mean to you? Especially in regards to your career?

Lizzo: Fashion is an extension, for sure, of my creativity. And I think that I like having fun, but I also like being a canvas for people. And I think the more I've allowed people to just be artists — like my glam team and creative team—, allow them to be artists and me [to] just be the canvas on which they can express themselves, I think the more fashionable I've become by allowing other people to do what they do best. So I think it means a lot to me in that regard because I love being a part of making people's dreams come true or watching their dreams come true. And we've had a lot of milestones within my creative and glam team in the last year and a half alone.

Lizzo on The Special Tour Outfits Creativity and Wardrobe Malfunctions

TV : What has been your favorite response so far from people that have watched your documentary?

Lizzo: I don't think I necessarily have a favorite response, but I was floored by how many people were actually loving it. Genuinely. I've probably lost a lot of followers on Twitter from my retweet sprees where I'm just sitting and reading and retweeting from everything under the hashtag #LoveLizzo, because I'm really appreciative. This is my life story. This is more personal than a song, more personal than Yitty, like a piece of clothing. More personal than anything I could put out there, more personal than a regular television show. This is my life. I have loved everyone's response. Getting sweet messages from my friends and peers, and Adele shouting me out on stage was really awesome. It makes me happy because this isn't just a piece of fiction, it's the art of my life. So it means a lot.

Lizzo’s Makeup Artist Alexx Mayo Shares a Behind-the-Scenes Peek at Her Tour Beauty Looks (Exclusive)

The pro, who partnered with Clinique to create looks for Lizzo's tour, shares the secrets of her stage glam with PEOPLE

lizzo tour stage

Courtesy of Clinique and Alexx Mayo

The Showgirl

One thing’s for sure: Lizzo looks “Good as Hell” every time she steps foot on stage. One part of the equation: her makeup is courtesy of Alexx Mayo , who’s worked with the star for six years. “We first collaborated for her 'Water Me' music video. We instantly connected and have been good friends and partners ever since!” the pro says.

For her “ Special 2our ,” Mayo partnered with Clinique to create her breathtaking makeup looks. “I’ve always loved Clinique, so the partnership was a great opportunity to get my hands on more of the brand’s products! Their makeup is so versatile and dependable that it was a no-brainer for me.”

For this smoky look in Ireland, he used the brand’s Quickliner for Eyes Intense and High Impact Mascara , a power duo for “instantly creating tons of combinations of beautiful looks.”

As the tour comes to an end, Mayo looks back on their unforgettable experience. “Every day was a new opportunity to create something different and memorable for her audience.”

As for his star client, Mayo gushes, “Her energy is infectious and her bold and bright style makes my job as a makeup artist so exciting!”

Ahead, Mayo takes PEOPLE through some of their favorite tour looks.

Ready for Her Close-Up

Mayo explains his process for Lizzo’s major looks. “I usually have a couple of makeup concepts in mind at the start of a tour, but I love to stay inspired by visiting museums and botanical gardens around the world. I love playing with complementary colors based on the looks for the show and sometimes play with neutral tones inspired by her skin tone or hair color.”

Disco Magic in Milwaukee

For this lit vibe, Mayo relied on Clinique’s Chubby Stick™ Sculpting Contour and Chubby Stick™ Sculpting Highlight . “I love them for contour, highlighter and blush. They’re so creamy and add such dimension and color to her base makeup.”

Graphic Kitty Kat Eye in Napa Valley

While Clinique’s All About Shadow Quad gave Lizzo her eye-catching effect, Mayo shares that his “holy grail product that I used on Lizzo each stop on the tour is the brand’s Even Better Clinical Serum Foundation . This foundation really has become my go-to since we’ve kicked off the tour. It feels and acts like a serum, but is also a lightweight, full coverage [base] that stays on for hours while she does her thing on stage.”

Tricks of the Trade

“My favorite tip for recreating Lizzo’s glam looks at home is this neat concealer trick,” Mayo shares. “I always use three different shades of Clinique’s Even Better All-Over Concealer + Eraser – one to color correct, one to conceal under the eyes and one to brighten. This instantly makes Lizzo’s base pop and gives her a flawless complexion from which I can build on. I can see her glowing even when she’s all the way up on stage.”

Fairy Unicorn Princess in Pittsburgh

Mayo says he and Lizzo have a synergy when it comes to creating a look. “I am fortunate that she allows me to create based on the inspirations I have at that time. For this look, I was inspired by Lizzo’s ensemble for the night: this baby blue Swarovski crystal bodysuit. I immediately started thinking of a carnival, amusement park, cotton candy and lollipops. I really wanted to play that up with the colors I chose.” Mayo balanced out the vibrant look with Clinique’s Pop Lip Colour + Primer in Beige Pop.

Secrets of the Beat

“One of the main differences between a tour and red carpet look is the amount of time you’re wearing makeup,” Mayo says, adding that not only does it have to last, it has to look fab for the duration of the performance and pre- and post-show photos. The "game changer" in his kit: the Blended Face Powder in Transparency 5.  “I really love how finely milled this powder is and how well it sets the face makeup and ensures it’s locked in all night.”

Neon Green Dream in St. Louis

“I’ve had the most fun playing up Lizzo’s eyes because there’s so much you can do with a good eyeshadow palette and eyeliner,” Mayo says. Vivid looks like this start with Clinique’s All About Shadow Primer for Eyes . The creamy formula ensures her looks stay put throughout the show.

Mayo says it’s been a “dream” collaborating with Lizzo. “I’ve now worked on a couple of tours with her and the Special 2our has been the most fun, by far. There’s no doubt about it – this tour is special and I couldn’t be more excited about the looks we’ve created together with Clinique.”

Turns Out Lizzo Isn’t Quitting Music

Lizzo "The Special Tour 2023" - Sydney

O n Tuesday, Lizzo clarified her recent statements about quitting the music industry in a new video. “When I say I quit, I mean I quit giving any negative energy attention,” she says. “What I’m not gonna quit, is the joy of my life, which is making music which is connecting the people because I know I’m not alone.”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lizzo (@lizzobeeating)

The video comes three days after the 35-year-old singer wrote “I quit” in a text post on Instagram, saying she was tired of “being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet.” In that post, she wrote, “All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”

The post raised questions about whether Lizzo was quitting the music industry as a whole and immediately, the comments section filled with supportive messages from celebrities telling the Grammy-winning singer how much she’s loved.

Lizzo’s recent statements come amid an ongoing lawsuit filed against her last year by three former backup dancers, who sued the singer for sexual harassment and creating a toxic work environment. She has denied the allegations, saying in a statement last year, “Usually I choose not to respond to false allegations, but these are as unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed. These sensationalized stories are coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted that they were told their behavior on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional."

Lizzo Says She Is Not Leaving Music Industry After ‘I Quit’ Post

Lizzo clarified that she was not quitting music after writing on Instagram last week that she was “starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”

A woman in a black leather outfit holds a microphone while singing against a blue background.

By Amanda Holpuch

Lizzo, the Grammy Award-winning singer, clarified on Tuesday that she was not quitting the music industry, days after her social media post saying “I QUIT” led some fans to speculate that she was ending her music career.

In a video posted on social media, Lizzo said she was not leaving the music business and instead was quitting “giving any negative energy attention.”

“What I’m not going to quit is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting to people, cause I know I’m not alone,” she said in the video. “In no way shape or form am I the only person who is experiencing that negative voice that seems to be louder than the positive.”

She continued: “If I can just give one person the inspiration or motivation to stand up for themselves, and say they quit letting negative people win, negative comments win, then I’ve done even more than I could’ve hoped for.”

Speculation that Lizzo was leaving the industry arose after she posted a message on Instagram on March 30 that ended with the words: “I QUIT.”

“I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet,” she wrote in the initial post. “All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”

Lizzo has won four Grammy Awards and rose to fame with hits including “Truth Hurts,” “ About Damn Time ” and other feel-good songs that promoted self-love. She built on her success by launching the shapewear line Yitty in 2022, and creating a reality television show on Amazon Prime Video, “ Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls ,” which aired the same year. On the show, dancers competed to back her up onstage.

These ventures have been clouded by criticism, including over a perceived contradiction between her promotion of body positivity and sale of shapewear, while lawsuits were filed last year accusing her of creating a hostile work environment on tour.

Three of her former dancers, including two who competed on the television show, filed a lawsuit in August 2023 accusing Lizzo of creating a hostile work environment. Lizzo denied the allegations . In February , a judge dismissed some of the claims, but allowed the case to move to trial.

In September 2023 , a former wardrobe designer who had worked briefly on Lizzo’s 2023 tour before being dismissed filed a lawsuit asserting that the tour’s wardrobe manager had created a hostile work environment, which tour management and Lizzo had failed to address. A spokesman for Lizzo called the suit an “absurd publicity stunt,” and her lawyers asked a judge to dismiss the lawsuit in December .

The response to Lizzo’s “I QUIT” statement was not the first time she has been the subject of speculation that she might leave the industry. In 2023 , she made her Twitter account private several times, and said it was because of comments people made about her weight.
