The Georgia Safari Conservation Park , a new interactive and conservation-minded destination wildlife experience, is set to open in April 2024 in Madison, about an hour east of Atlanta.

“We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of Georgia Safari Conservation Park,” said Bill Kilmer, Partner of Georgia Safari Conservation Park. “Our mission is not only to provide a thrilling and immersive safari experience for our visitors but also to foster a deep appreciation for the natural world and promote active involvement in conservation efforts through education, adventure, and a commitment to sustainability.”

Visitors will encounter wild and exotic species including giraffes, white rhinos, Hartmann’s mountain zebras, bongos, kudus, two-toed sloths, ostrich, African spurred tortoises, speckled king snakes, addaxes, and more, according to a press release the facility recently released.

Located on 530 sprawling acres, the park will offer a safari experience during the day, but an option to stay overnight at the park, too.

It’s a project that the Mogan County Citizen website noted that is 10 years in the works. Kilmer told the website that the COVID supply chain issues and price increases slowed the building process, but that they are now on schedule for a 2024 opening.

Georgia Safari Conservation Park announces 2024 opening

  • By Patrick Yost Staff Writer

  • Jul 11, 2023 Updated Jul 13, 2023

Giraffe Barn_View 1.jpg

Principals with the proposed Georgia Safari Conservation Park on Monday said the park has scheduled a tentative “Phase One” opening for early 2024.

According to Park CEO Bill Killmer, work on seven miles of roads throughout the 530-acre site off Monticello Highway next to Interstate 20 continues. Killmer said the Park is currently working to finish a series of lodging accommodations including a giraffe and rhino barn that will include a private, one-bedroom suite overlooking the enclosure.

Killmer said the conservation park is currently completing a double, eight-foot containment fence around the property.

“We are focusing on lodging and touring,” Killmer said. Along with the animal enclosures, the Park is also working to complete a series of “Safari Tent Lodging” that will provide “luxurious safari tents nestled amidst the wild beauty of the park.”

Once completed, the two-bedroom tents will accommodate up to four guests.

Killmer said movement on opening the park has accelerated since a slow down from COVID-related supply chain issues and spikes in material costs. According to Killmer, the Park is operating on a conventional bank loan and private investment to move forward with a vision of a safari park that will provide animal encounters to visitors that promotes both education and conservation. “We’re excited to bring this to our community and share it and have fun.”

Killmer said the park will open with an assortment of Zebras, Ostriches and Antelope and is awaiting the delivery of a pair of male White Rhinos and a pair of Giraffes for the special enclosure.

The Georgia Safari Conservation Park concept has been percolating for the past 10 years and Vice President and Partner Brandi Anderson said the journey to opening has been fulfilling. “When you are chasing a dream that you feel in your soul is worthy, you continue chasing.”

The Park has teamed up with noted zoological consultant Rick Barongi to both design and implement the safari experience. Barongi was director of animal programs for the Walt Disney Company from 1993 to 1999 and was the chief animal executive for the design and construction of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. He also has held executive leadership positions at the San Diego Zoo and retired as director of the Houston Zoo in 2015 to develop his own 100-acre non-profit conservation park in Fredericksburg, Texas, called Longneck Manor.

“He has had enormous success with this concept,” said Anderson.

Killmer said the Park expects, upon opening, approximately 200 visitors a day to the unique experience of traveling through the acreage to view animals from open vehicles. The elegant enclosures will offer visitors a personalized experience with several different species, he said.

In a newly-released press kit, the Park promises that visitors will be able to “immerse yourself in the wonders of the world and embark on a journey that brings you closer to exotic wildlife and illustrate the vital message of preserving our natural world.”

“People are losing their connection to nature,” Killmer said.

Pricing for access to the park has not been released but Anderson said the Park was working on several tiers of entrance, from the high-end private Giraffe and Rhino suite experience to a guided day tour around the park.

Plan to bring zoo and safari park to US city of Madison, Georgia

Words:  Sam McCaffrey

| 2 min read

A 200-hectare zoo and safari park that will feature giraffes, rhinos, zebras and ostriches is under development in the US near Atlanta, Georgia.

The Georgia Safari Conservation Park is planned for Morgan County, Georgia just outside the city limits of Madison. When fully developed, it will include three attractions on one site – a drive-through safari, a traditional walk-through zoo and treetop lodging.

The drive-through safari component of the park will allow guests to get up close and personal with exotic animals. Using one of the park’s custom safari vehicles, guests will take an immersive guided tour of the wildlife savanna. The tours will be designed to mirror the same experience as an authentic African game drive.

The zoo experience will take guests on an adventure across five continents – Africa, Asia, Australia, North and South America. There will be lush botanical gardens, landscaped walkways and naturalistic animal exhibits.

Both experiences will feature multiple species of African wildlife including giraffes, rhinos, zebras, bongos, kudu, ostrich and more. Custom guided tours, behind-the-scenes experiences, up-close animal encounters, animal feedings, photo opportunities, team-building activities, corporate excursions and events will also be available.

Treetop Lodging will offer guests the opportunity to stay overnight in individual units built high in the tree canopy overlooking the wildlife of a private African savanna. This 50-unit lodge will include an event centre for corporate retreats, weddings, birthdays and other events, as well as a restaurant.

The Georgia Safari Conservation Park has grown over time, with the zoo originally approved for 160-hectares in 2014, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. It got another approval for 176-hectares in October last year to add lodging and amusements. A new application would grow the facility to 213-hectares, if approved.

In October 2017 the development team stated on its Facebook page that it has completed its master plan and is in the process of finalising phase one funding. The post also said that the organisation is seeking accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Architecture firm Wakefield Beasley and Associates is working on the project, according to its website, while Georgia Civil has worked on engineering and landscape architecture plans.
