Madonna brings The Celebration Tour to Belgium

by MadonnaTribe · October 20, 2023

madonna tour 2023 antwerpen

Madonna will bring The Celebration Tour to Belgium with two shows at the Sportpaleis in Antwerp  tomorrow, Saturday 21 and Sunday, 22 October 2023.

There are currently a few tickets available for the Sunday show , including excellent GA Floor B tickets priced at €196.70 each.

The shows will in fact be the first ones of the tour to offer general admission entry.

As usual for the continental Europe dates, the floor will be all standing and split into General Admission A and B (plus the two Pits).

Customers with The Gold Circle Early Entry Ticket Package will be allowed to access the Gold Circle before standard ticket holders. By looking at the maps on the vendor’s website, in Antwerp we expect the Gold Circle to coincide with the entire GA A Floor area; let’s see how Live Nation has planned to handle this.

Madonna celebrates 40 years of stardom in Antwerp

At 64 many people in Belgium will be looking forward to a well-deserved retirement, but not so Madonna.   The American megastar turns 65 next August and is marking four decades in the business with a new world tour that will include Belgium.   On 21 October Madonna will perform at the Sports Palace in Antwerp.

Madonna’s Celebration Tour starts on 15 July and takes the singer to 35 venues across the globe.   It concludes in Amsterdam on 1 December.

During her four decades on stage Madonna’s performed in Belgium only three times: the first occasion in 2009 as part of the Sticky and Sweet Tour.   The 65,000 tickets available for the Werchter Festival site were sold out in no time.   This was a concert fans had been looking forward to for yonks.

But reviewers were not overwhelmed.   The show was spectacular, but Madonna’s voice faltered on several occasions and there was no rapport with the crowd.

Madonna played the King Boudewijn Stadium in 2012 and the Antwerp Sports Palace three years later.   Ticket sales for that concert were remarkably slow.

This year Madonna is returning to the Sports Palace but without any new studio album.   She’s feeling nostalgic and will treat her fans to the greatest hits of her career, an easy way of bringing fans from various generations together.

“Like a Virgin” is probably the singer’s best-known album.   It was her second.   Several decades later she has released 14 albums in all.   A new album isn’t expected this year but a compilation album is anticipated to celebrate 40 years of stardom.

“Welcome to the party, bitches,” Madonna previously announced for her global Celebration Tour . Commemorating four decades of the superstar’s biggest hits, Madonna kicked off the U.S. leg of her 2023-2024 run of concert dates (including rescheduled dates ) in December, performing in over 35 cities across North America and Europe.

Initially set for July 2023, Madonna had to postpone the Celebration Tour in June after getting hospitalized due to a bacterial infection. “My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children,” Madonna shared in a statement online in July. “My second thought was that I did not want to disappoint anyone who bought tickets for my tour. I also didn’t want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone.”

During her first week of the Celebration Tour at a stop in Antwerp, Belgium, Madonna took a minute to address her recent hospitalization. “Less than four months ago, I was in a hospital and I was unconscious, and people were thinking, predicting that I might not make it,” Madonna told fans at Belgium’s Sportpaleis Arena. “So, it’s a fucking miracle that I’m here right now. My mother, God bless her, she must be watching over me — she said, ‘Girl, it’s not your time to go.'”

Madonna also recently spoke about the “near-death experience” during her Los Angeles concert in March, even addressing her doctor who was in the audience and the first words she said after getting out of her coma .

“It’s called a near-death experience, and I’m not kidding, it was pretty scary,” Madonna said. “Obviously, I didn’t know for four days because I was in an induced coma, but when I woke up, the first word I said was, ‘No.’ Anyway, that’s what my assistant tells me.”

The icon later told the audience, including this writer, at the Forum, “I’m pretty sure that God was saying to me, ‘You want to come with? You want to come with us, wanna go this way?’ And I said, ‘No!'”

“The oppression of the LGBTQ+ is not only unacceptable and inhumane; it’s creating an unsafe environment; it makes America a dangerous place for our most vulnerable citizens, especially trans women of color,” Madonna shared in a statement on Instagram. “Also, these so-called laws to protect our children are unfounded and pathetic. Anyone with half a brain knows not to fuck with a drag queen. Bob and I will see you from the stage in Nashville where we will celebrate the beauty that is the queer community.”

With dates scheduled throughout April 2024, Madonna will continue to travel all across the United States for the Celebration Tour , including stops in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Austin.

Madonna Celebration Tour Set List

Madonna’s tour features some of the legend’s most iconic songs and moments throughout her career.

“Madonna, I dare you to do a world tour and play your greatest motherfuckin’ hits,” Amy Schumer dared the singer in the tour announcement clip , which included appearances from Judd Apatow, Jack Black, Lil Wayne, Diplo, Kate Berlant, Larry Owens, Meg Stalter, Eric Andre, and Bob The Drag Queen, who will support Madonna on the road.

“Four decades … as in, 40 years” Madonna replies. “As in, all those songs?”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performs tracks from the opener “Nothing Really Matters” to “La Isla Bonita,” which she also sang with Schumer in the tour announcement clip.

At a recent stop at the Kia Forum in L.A., Madonna’s set list also included “Holiday” from her self-titled debut to the disco anthem “Hung Up” from 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor to the title track from 1998’s Ray of Light — there’s no shortage of Madonna’s greatest songs to choose from.

Live Nation has confirmed the newly rescheduled tour dates for Madonna ‘s “Celebration” tour. After having suffered through a “ serious bacterial infection ,” Madonna had to put a halt to the start of her 80-show jaunt but has recently recovered and is now ready to hit the road.

The North American leg of the trek will kick off immediately after the originally announced UK and Europe dates with a start date of Dec. 13 in Brooklyn at Barclays Center. Due to scheduling conflicts, the following shows have been canceled: July 27 in Tulsa, Dec. 22 in Nashville, Jan. 15 in San Francisco, Jan. 18 in Las Vegas, and Jan. 20 in Phoenix. Find tickets on Ticketmaster and Vivid Seats .

Popular on Variety

“Getting all shows rescheduled was the number one priority,” said Live Nation in a statement. “Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, a few shows noted below will be canceled. Madonna regrets the inconvenience to fans and hopes to make it up to those markets in the future.”

The previously scheduled European dates are slated to begin on Oct. 14 in London and will visit different cities across the European mainland for seven weeks before concluding with two more London dates on Dec. 5 and 6.

The North American tour was originally scheduled to begin July 15 in Vancouver and rehearsals were nearing completion, but the singer was rushed to the hospital on June 24 due to an unspecified “serious bacterial infection” that led to a several-day stay in an intensive care unit, according to an Instagram post from her manager Guy Oseary .

In another post shared on the singer’s Instagram in late July, Madonna shared gratitude for her fans, team and family and said she “realized how lucky I am to be alive.”

“Love from family and friends is the best medicine,” she wrote in a caption to a photo carousel of her with family and friends. “One month out of the hospital and I can reflect. As a mother you can really get caught up In the needs of your children and the seemingly endless giving… But when the chips were down my children really showed up for me. I saw a side to them I had never seen before. It made all the difference. So did the love and support from my friends.”

It seems exactly like all 3 London full setlist dates. There was an emotional moment after M&F but, much like M, I try to run from it as of now.

Madonna

In 1974, at the age of 15, Madonna snuck out of her father’s house in suburban Detroit to attend David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs Tour. She was summarily grounded for the summer, but the punishment was worth it. “I don’t think that I breathed for two hours. It was the most amazing show that I’d ever seen,” Madonna said during a speech inducting the Thin White Duke into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.

Madonna’s first two tours, 1985’s Virgin Tour and 1987’s Who’s That Girl World Tour, served as experiment labs for the burgeoning superstar. In 1990, her Blond Ambition World Tour revolutionized the pop concert. Drawing inspiration from Bowie’s theatricality, Prince’s cheeky flamboyance and Michael Jackson’s stage command, she offered audiences an immersive experience that went beyond conventional live performance.

Each of Madonna’s subsequent tours have pushed the boundaries even further, embracing technology for multimedia (and multi-sensory) presentations of her music. On the heels of her own induction into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2008, the singer’s Sticky & Sweet Tour became the highest grossing tour for a female artist in history – a record she held until 2023, when it was finally eclipsed by Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, according to Billboard Boxscore.

Madonna could have hung up her corset long ago and she would still be one of the most successful live acts of all time. But she continues to push herself – and us. Her latest trek, the career-spanning Celebration Tour, will wrap up with a historic free show at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 4. The concert will be broadcast live on TV Globo and will likely see Madonna performing for her biggest audience to date – more than 40 years into her career.

To get in on the celebration, we’ve ranked all 12 of Madonna’s boundary-busting tours.

The Virgin Tour (1985)

Madonna

Madonna’s very first tour was propelled, like most things related to the queen, almost entirely on the strength of her sheer force of will — and, of course, her raw talent. A magnetic and skilled performer (that toss and catch of the tambourine!), Madonna sprinted through a relatively short setlist culled largely from her first two albums, dancing and belting out hits like “Into the Groove” and “Burning Up” like her rent was due yesterday. But she didn’t need to worry about paying the bills for long: When the tour kicked off in April 1985, she was playing modest theaters; two months later, she was performing to a sold-out crowd of Madonna wannabes at Madison Square Garden.

Who’s That Girl World Tour (1987)

Madonna

Compared to the Virgin Tour just two years earlier, Madonna stepped up the production values, choreography and theatricality for her first world (and stadium) tour. Dramatic performances of “Papa Don’t Preach,” “Live to Tell” and her then-most recent No. 1 on the Hot 100, “Who’s That Girl,” hinted at what was to come on future tours in terms of spectacle and ambition. Though it was only her second tour, Who’s That Girl would become the last of Madonna’s shows to resemble a conventional pop-rock concert.

Re-Invention World Tour (2004)

Madonna

Coming off of the commercial disappointment of her 2003 album American Life , Madonna returned to the place she’s always thrived: the stage. The Re-Invention Tour was nothing she hadn’t done before or wouldn’t do better in the future, but — for the first time in years — she was embracing her past, performing rocked-out renditions of early hits “Burning Up” and “Material Girl” with electric guitar in hand, and even reinventing a few fan favorites like “Hanky Panky” and “Deeper and Deeper.” As for the queen herself, she was in top form both vocally and physically.

Madame X Tour (2019-2020)

Madonna

Part jukebox musical, part avant-garde performance art and part standup special, the Madame X Tour revolved around a James Baldwin quote… and a typewriter. Yes, Madame X is a stenographer. The tour took place in theaters and opera houses instead of the usual arenas, offering a more intimate and interactive experience. Highlights included a jazzy version of “Human Nature,” a neo-noir restaging of “Vogue” and a crowd sing-along to the resistance anthem “I Rise.”

Rebel Heart Tour (2015-2016)

Madonna

A blend of Cirque du Soleil, Broadway and burlesque, the Rebel Heart Tour saw dancers swinging on 10-foot stilts, dressed as nuns on stripper poles and sliding down giant LED screens. As for Madonna, she seemed more at ease on stage than ever, playing the coy chanteuse a la Blond Ambition and strumming the ukulele to “True Blue” – the first time she’d performed the song in nearly three decades. In fact, Rebel Heart was heavier on the hits than any tour since Re-Invention, including a Latin-infused medley of classics “Dress You Up,” “Into the Groove” and “Lucky Star,” as well as a modern twist on “Material Girl.”

Sticky & Sweet Tour (2008-2009)

Madonna

After a first act that didn’t quite live up to the lofty standards Madonna had previously set, the Sticky & Sweet Tour eventually hit its stride. The ‘Gypsy’ and ‘Rave’ segments in particular – including an electrifying rendition of “La Isla Bonita” featuring Ukrainian group Kolpakov Trio and a heavy metal version of “Hung Up,” which ended with Madonna shredding her guitar to Pantera’s “A New Level” – were as exhilarating as any of her previous tours’ best moments.

The Celebration Tour (2023-2024)

Madonna

Madonna’s latest tour is the sight and sound of a legend fully embracing her legacy. With no new album to promote, the setlist is packed with so many iconic songs – including a handful she’s never performed on tour before, such as “Bedtime Story” and “Bad Girl” – that more than a dozen of her 28 top 5 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 had to be omitted. A musical recounting of the Queen of Pop’s life and career, the Celebration Tour touches on her rise to fame in New York, the AIDS crisis (via a stirring rendition of “Live to Tell”), the media backlash she suffered in the early ‘90s and her spiritual rebirth, in which she rises like an AI phoenix on a glowing cube and — quicker than a ray of light — soars above the crowd. Masterful.

Drowned World Tour (2001)

Madonna

Pioneered by bands like U2, live concerts had moved closer to multimedia presentations in the years since The Girlie Show in 1993, and Madonna fully embraced the artistic potential that new technology allowed. For her first tour in eight years, Madonna pulled out all of the stops: smoke machines, acrobatic stunts, line-dancing, even Japanese anime. And with only a handful of older songs making the cut – including tour staples “Holiday” and “Human Nature” – she proved she was still laser-focused on the present… and the future.

The MDNA Tour (2012)

Madonna

Coming on the heels of Madonna’s iconic halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVI, the maximalist MDNA Tour was one of her most ambitious, employing elaborate stage combat, slacklining, Tetris-style cubes that rose 16 feet above the stage and a backdrop of eight rotating video screens. It was also one of her most intense shows. At 54, Madonna was in peak form, performing intricate choreography in spiked stilettos nonstop for two hours straight. The only chance she had to take a breath was during a surprisingly poignant piano version of “Like a Virgin” … after which the air was literally squeezed from her lungs by a corset being tightened around her.

The Girlie Show (1993)

Madonna

Inspired by cabaret and classic Hollywood musicals, The Girlie Show was a visual tour-de-force. The second act, dubbed ‘Studio 54,’ rivaled the ‘Religious’ segment from Blond Ambition for sheer catharsis, with the freedom of the orgiastic disco era (“Deeper and Deeper”) juxtaposed with the subsequent AIDS crisis (“In This Life”), as well as a captivating fever dream of choreography set to a remix of “Justify My Love.” Madonna was in fine voice throughout, growling her way through “Express Yourself” and harmonizing beautifully on “Rain.” She’s never had a better live band, either — and even mused about collaborating with them on an album, though it sadly never materialized.

Blond Ambition World Tour (1990)

Madonna

With its elaborate costumes (courtesy of French designer Jean-Paul Gaultier), Broadway-style sets (designed by Madonna’s brother Christopher Ciccone) and quasi-narrative arc, the Blond Ambition Tour is the blueprint – the mother of the modern pop concert. The show infamously found Madonna exorcising herself of the guilt of her Catholic upbringing. The ‘Religious’ segment, which began with the singer simulating masturbation and ended with her facing the judgment of the male authority figures in her life (her father, the Pope, God), is among the most audaciously conceived and impeccably executed moments of stagecraft in touring history.

Confessions Tour (2006)

Madonna

The Confessions Tour snags the top spot on our list for two reasons. First, it served as a culmination of everything Madonna had learned from Blond Ambition through Re-Invention, combining spectacle, drama and good ol’ fashioned performance mojo. Like its namesake, 2005’s Grammy-winning Confessions on a Dance Floor , the show struck a deft balance between dance-party hedonism and intimate introspection. Madonna’s 2000 Hot 100 chart-topper “Music” was transformed into a roller-disco fantasia, while a haunting rendition of “Live to Tell” saw the veteran provocateur suspended from a giant disco-fied cross in order to shine a light on the plight of AIDS in Africa.

Most importantly, Confessions was Madonna’s most cohesive and consistently thrilling show to date. Musical director Stuart Price skillfully arranged and remixed early hits like “Erotica” and “Like a Virgin” to fit the Eurodisco aesthetic of Confessions . Plus, each act of the show was a visual and aural smorgasbord, from the opening equestrian segment, which found Madonna emerging from a giant glitter ball and commanding a stripper-poll-cum-carousel-horse, to the extended finale, which mashed up “Lucky Star” and “Hung Up” into a nearly 15-minute explosion of ear and eye candy.

Madonna Shouts Out Her Cousins She Hasn't Seen in Years at the Tampa Stop of the Celebration Tour

The pop icon is currently in the midst of wrapping up the final U.S. dates of her acclaimed Celebration Tour

madonna tour 2023 antwerpen

Madonna is known for bringing her family along on tour, but some special guests stepped out to show their support at her concert in Tampa.

When the pop icon, 65, brought her Celebration Tour to Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday, April 4, she gave a shout-out to her cousins in the audience. Not only was the hitmaker excited that her relatives from her mother's side of the family were in attendance, she shared that it had been over two decades since she'd seen them.

According to fan-recorded footage that was shared to YouTube , the Material Girl mentioned her cousins were watching the show while taking a moment on stage to reflect on the value of family. After speaking about her children and reflecting on her late mother , she said, "One other mention is that I have two cousins that are in the audience tonight."

The seven-time Grammy winner continued, "I'm not pointing them out. I'm just saying that my mother is their aunt and I haven't seen them in, I don't know, 25 years maybe."

"I hope that you enjoy seeing them tonight," Madonna added.

The moment felt especially moving, given how the pop superstar has opened up over the years about how much her mother's death caused by breast cancer in 1963 when she was just 5 years old has affected her.

Madge gave a nod to her relatives shortly after the portion of her show, which features tributes to her mom, Madonna Louise Ciccone and her son David 's birth mother, among others, saying that it gives her "great pleasure" to see their faces on stage.

"This part of the show, and this part of my life, is extremely important to me," she said. "Everything that I have ever done in my life is meaningless compared to be a mother. I'm not trying to sound corny or anything because it is a full-time job."

Kevin Mazur/WireImage

After thanking her children David, Mercy , and twins Stella and Estere for performing every night during the tour , and noting how much she loves all of her kids (including the two eldest, Lourdes and Rocco , who don't join her out on the road), she continued to speak about how much family means to her.

The "Hung Up" singer said, "So, thanks for talking about family and motherhood and love. Right? Because that's what it's all about. That's why I'm here. That's why I still have this job because I love what I do. And also because you have been supporting me for 40 years, so thank you. Thank you for your love and support for four f---ing decades. I do not take it for granted."

She then broke into an acoustic performance of her 1989 classic "Express Yourself."

Madonna's acclaimed, long-awaited Celebration Tour  launched in October 2023 at London's O2 Arena with a spectacular two-hour set where she opened up about her  road back to the stage  following  her hospitalization last year  due to a  serious bacterial infection .

After the European leg of the tour, which lasted throughout the fall, she kicked off her shows in North American with several dates in New York City and Washington D.C. in December. Her tour resumed in early 2024 and is set to continue across the U.S. until April 15. At the end of the month, she'll take the show to Mexico City for five dates.

The Celebration Tour will officially wrap up with a special, free concert in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on May 4 at Copacabana Beach.

According to a press release, the historic show sponsored by Itaú Apresenta "will be free of charge as a thank you to her fans for celebration more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour."

Madonna's Rebellious Childhood Antics Got Her In Major Trouble

Madonna smiling

For some people, the transition from childhood to adulthood begets an entirely new personality and values. For others, they're born exactly who they are and will always be. Madonna would be the latter of these two categories. Long  before Madonna was the famous pop culture-defining star  we know today, she was blazing trails around the suburbs of Detroit.

As the performer would later put it in an October 2013  Facebook  post, her childhood in the Midwest taught her that "the world was divided into two categories: people who followed the status quo and played it safe, and people who threw convention out the window and danced to the beat of a different drum. I hurled myself into the second category."

In doing so, Madonna, born Madonna Louise Ciccone, would face criticism from classmates and punishment from her parents and teachers. Mary Gabriel's 2023 biography "Madonna: A Rebel Life" recounts how the future pop star set the stage for her life of artistic expression that was groundbreaking, innovative, and often controversial.

A Catholic schoolgirl rebel turned international performer denounced by the Pope

Madonna was born into a devout Catholic family, and her religious upbringing continued into her academic career. As a student at St. Frederick's and St. Andrew's Catholic Elementary Schools, the future pop star's bright academic performance was often overshadowed by her shocking, "unladylike" antics. She cartwheeled down hallways, hung upside down on the monkey bars, and rolled up the skirt of her Catholic school uniform at the waist.

Biographer Mary Gabriel said this pushback against Catholicism was Madonna's way of "recognizing that girls were treated differently than boys by the Catholic church." Pain was at the root of Madonna's rebellion, which Gabriel described as "anger from the depths of her heart because she understood the religion and how beautiful it was supposed to be."

Madonna continued to push the boundaries with her 1990 Blond Ambition tour, which featured some of Madonna's most inappropriate outfits and an abundance of Catholic imagery juxtaposed with elements of performative hyper-sexuality. Pope John Paul II denounced the singer in 1990, urging fans to boycott the singer. L'osservatore Romano, the newspaper of Vatican City, called the Blond Ambition show "a complete disgrace" (via Digital Spy ).

Before shocking audiences worldwide, she was shocking her distraught father

Madonna's 1990 Blond Ambition tour certainly wasn't the last time she would provoke and shock her audience, and it wasn't her first, either. The first time Madonna got a taste of the thrill of controversial performance was as a student at West Junior High School in Rochester Hills, Michigan. The singer's younger brother, Christopher Ciccone, recalled the fateful performance to Mary Gabriel, author of "Madonna: A Rebel Life."

Per Ciccone, Madonna and a classmate performed a dance routine choreographed to The Who's then-recent hit, "Baba O'Riley," for their school's talent show. Clad in shorts and tops, the two young girls covered themselves in fluorescent body paint. "As far as my father is concerned, she might as well be naked," Ciccone told Gabriel. "According to his strict moral code, her appearance is utterly X-rated, and he puts down his camera in horror" (via Business Insider ).

Ciccone said their father reprimanded Madonna until she was in tears, after which the family never discussed her scandalous dance routine again. But if the Michigan suburbanites thought that was bad, one can only imagine their reactions to Madonna's follow-up performances as an adult. Indeed, Madonna has had several performative scandals and blunders , from her banned pseudo-pornographic "Justify My Love" music video in 1990 to kissing rapper Drake on stage at Coachella in 2015. For her part, at least her dad wasn't in the audience with a camcorder that time.
