My friend and I traveled to Athens, Greece for a six-day stay in April 2023. We toured all the hot spots in Athens but also knew we wanted to make day trips to Delphi and Meteora. We booked a day tour to Meteora with "Key Tours" from Athens. We traveled with them to Delphi and all went very well. We booked the Meteora tour online in the evening for the following day. We asked about this booking in their office the day before but they never mentioned any timeline. However, after booking the Meteora tour, we never got an email confirmation for the booking only to find out the following morning (once reaching someone over the phone) that this type of tour cannot be booked the night before due to the need for purchase of train tickets (yet the system has a glitch and allows for bookings). We were running out of time in Greece but didn't want to miss seeing Meteora so we decided to go on our own. We went to the train station in the morning, got our train tickets, and off we went. We arrived in Meteora unprepared in terms of how we'll reach the monasteries and figured we'll figure it out once we get there. We did feel a bit of stress at this point knowing we have less than 4 hours before our train's departure back to Athens. Right across from the train station we found "VIP Meteora Tours" office and inquired if we could do an impromptu tour. It was all a breeze from there!!! What a relief. They made some phone calls, made us complimentary coffee, and within 15 mins a minibus and a tour guide (Ria) showed up. Ria explained what we'll see and what to expect. She was talking to us the entire time on the bus and told us all about the history of the monasteries as well as about the local geology, all in excellent English I should add. We visited two monasteries and stopped a few times for photos. Then we were dropped off right back at the train station exactly few minutes before our departure. Knowing now the distances there, I don't see how we would have done it without "VIP Meteora Tours" given our small time window. And the cherry on the cake? We saved about 30 Euros per person versus the price tag from "Key Tours" in Athens (who did give us our money back). Overall, I highly recommend "VIP Meteora Tours"! Meteora is a magical place. Activity description.

The Meteora Sunset Tour starts with a visit to a monastery, either the Nunnery of St. Stephen or the Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas (depending on the day). Then we head to the old town of Kalampaka, where you get to visit the Byzantine Church of the Dormition of Virgin Mary. Afterwards, we go to the old hermitages of Bandovas and right before the sun starts setting behind the beautiful rocks, we stop around Meteora for photos. This tour is finished by a final stop at the Psaropetra rock, the most panoramic viewpoint in the area to enjoy the sunset.

What are the visiting hours and days of the monasteries

The opening hours often change from year to year, so beware when relying on information provided in guidebooks or general web sites. We will try to do our best in keeping the timetable of visiting times and days of monasteries up-to-date. Check the opening hours of Meteora monasteries  here .

What is you cancelation policy?

We offer a very flexible cancelation policy which is Full Refund Available up to 24 Hours Before Your Tour Date for the day trips and 48 hours for the multiday tours. 

How many monasteries can I see in one day?

Before we answer this question we have to specify that everything should be taken into account. It depends on how fit you are, the transportation and time available, weather conditions ect. Most people are able to visit between 2 to 4 monasteries per day. The few visitors who visit all 6 of them within one day are missing out a magical, more slow-paced adventure. We recommend at least 2 days stay in Meteora.

Is there a dress code to enter a monastery?

Appropriate clothing for everyone is required to enter the monasteries. Sleeveless clothing and shorts over the knee for men are prohibited and you‘ll be denied access if dressed that way. For ladies skirts and shawls are available to borrow or buy at the entrance of monasteries in case they don’t have such clothing to cover themselves.

How many stairs for each monastery?

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity and Great Meteoro are the less accessible (over 300 steps). Rousanou, Varlaam and Saint Nicolaos have an average number of 140. Some of the monasteries apart the staircases requires uphill walking in paved paths. The Holy Monastery of St Stephen is connected with a walking bridge, thus making it more accessible than any other monastery.

What is the Entrance fee for the monasteries?

In each monastery there is an entrance fee of 3 euro per person. Kids up to 12 years old they don’t pay entrance fees in the monasteries.

Should I take the car to drive to monasteries or is better using other means?

There are many reasons not to want to drive while exploring Meteora — like if you’re not confident driving on the opposite side of the road, your spouse is a terrible copilot and you just want to have fun instead of arguing; or if you want to enjoy the scenic road and not to feel stress about the narrow and curvy roads. Lack of parking space outside the monasteries is especially frequent phenomenon during the pick period in the summer. So by joining one of our tours might save you a lot of headaches and unwanted distractions.

Can i find parking for my car outside the monasteries?

During the pick period from May till late October be prepared to face issues with finding parking space or brief traffic jams outside the monasteries of Great Meteoro , Varlaam , and Agios Stefanos ; even more during the rush hours between 10:00 am to 14:00. This happens due to the limited width of the roads and the limited parking spots available outside those monasteries.

If possible, try to be outside those monasteries way before 09:00 am to avoid any big crowds. Or you might consider leaving your car in the hotel and join one of the many tours offered by the locals.

Are pets allowed?

Pets, with the exception of service dogs, are not allowed inside the monasteries.

Is there any lab at town to have a PCR test?

If you are looking for PCR test or antigen test you can find few labs at Kalampaka town, located few meters away from our offices. For more details come by our office or send us an email or use the instant messenger.

2 days Meteora and Trikala

Our driver will meet you early morning at your Athens accommodation and head out of the city towards Northern Greece. After a stop to one of the most famous battlefields in the history,

Thermopylae, we make our way to the beautiful town of Trikala. You can walk around the river and the old town and why not bicycle as Trikala is probably the most bike-friendly city in Greece! You can also admire the byzantine castle, the clock-tower and visit the Kursum Mosque. Lunch break (depending on the weather this can also be done at the mountain village of Elati) and then we will make our way to Meteora after a stop at the stunning stone bridge and waterfall of Palaiokarya. We arrive at Meteora where you will get a glimpse of the monasteries at sunset. Overnight at a hotel with rooms that overlook the rocks.

After breakfast, the driver will take you to visit the monasteries (2 or 3 depending on your interest). Then we will make our long way back to Athens (about 4-hour drive) with lunch stop at the seaside town of Kamena Vourla. Arrival at your accommodation around 6pm.
