As of 2024, there are 26 VISA-FREE countries for Indian passport holders. These countries do not require any visa application. All you need is a valid Indian passport and meet the entry requirements.

Below is the list of VISA-FREE countries for Indians in alphabetical order.

• Saint Kitts and Nevis
• Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
• Trinidad and Tobago

Apart from the above countries, the below 5 territories are also VISA-FREE for Indians.

• British Virgin Islands (British Territory)
• Cook Islands (New Zealand Territory)
• Montserrat (British Territory)
• Niue (New Zealand Territory)
• Pitcairn Islands (British Territory)

Let’s look at each of these countries in detail.

• Passport required: Indian voter card or Indian passport valid for a minimum of 6 months
• Duration of stay: 14 days with the possibility of extension subject to immigration approval
• Must obtain an entry permit at the border or airport. The following documents are needed for the entry permit: (a) a completed Bhutan entry permit form, (b) 2 passport-sized photographs, (c) proof of accommodation and (d) valid travel insurance (or can purchase domestic insurance at port of entry).
• Must pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of 1,200 BTN (or its equivalent in INR) per day for the total duration of the trip. There is no SDF for children below 6, 50% SDF for 6-12 years and full SDF for above 12 years.
• Children under the age of 18 can use a birth certificate instead of a passport and must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

Personal experience

I have traveled to Bhutan on my Indian passport in 2019. I entered Bhutan overland from India at Phuentsholing. I had to obtain my entry permit at the Immigration office in Phuentsholing before heading to Paro. 

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for a minimum of 6 months
• Duration of stay: 15 days
• Allowed to stay 15 days within any 180 days
• Must enter Iran by air (visa exemption not available if entering via land)

03. Kazakhstan

• Duration of stay: 14 days
• The period of stay should not exceed 42 calendar days within a 180-day time frame
• A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission
• Passport required: Indian passport valid for at least 90 days beyond the intended period of stay
• Duration of stay: 30 days
• Must have a valid proof of return or onward ticket
• Must hold at least MOP 20,000 in cash if the period of stay is 22 days or longer

I traveled to Macau from Hong Kong by ferry in 2018. I entered Macau at the outer harbour ferry terminal. I only had to show my ferry ticket back to Hong Kong. 

05. Malaysia (until 31 Dec 2024)

• Passport required: Indian passport with at least 6 months of validity at the time of entry
• Must hold proof of onward or return travel and proof of hotel booking

IMPORTANT Malaysia usually requires an eVisa or embassy visa for Indians. But from 01 Dec 2023 to 31 Dec 2024, Malaysia is offering visa exemption (VISA-FREE) to all Indian tourists.

I traveled to Malaysia on many occasions using Malaysia eVisa . On most occasions, the immigration at the airport asked me for my return ticket and hotel booking.

06. Maldives

• Passport required: Indian passport with at least 1 month of validity at the time of arriving in Maldives
• Duration of stay: 90 days
• Total stay in Maldives can’t exceed 90 days within 6 months
• Must produce a yellow fever certificate if traveling from a country with a risk of the disease
• Must hold proof of onward or return travel, proof of prepaid accommodation and proof of sufficient finances to fund your stay
• Must submit traveler declaration (arrival/departure card) online on IMUGA within 96 hours of the flight
• Passport required: A valid Indian voter ID card or valid Indian passport
• Duration of stay: Unlimited 
• Children under the age of 18 must carry birth certificate.

I traveled to Nepal in 2017. I flew into Katmandu International Airport from New Delhi. I spent about 3 months in Nepal. When leaving, I was asked what I was doing in Nepal, where I live, etc. 

08. Thailand (until 10 May 2024)

• Passport required: Indian passport with at least 6 months of validity
• Must hold a valid return or onward ticket, accommodation booking for the first few nights and about 10,000 THB as proof of funds in cash or cards

IMPORTANT Thailand is usually Visa on Arrival for Indians. But between 10 Nov 2023 to 10 May 2024, Thailand is offering visa exemption (VISA-FREE) to all Indian tourists.

I have been traveling to Thailand since 2017. I have entered Thailand many times via air and overland using my Indian passport. I have obtained Thailand visa on arrival on many occasions and a 60-day tourist visa on one occasion.

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry
• Visitors must have proof of onward or return ticket and proof of accommodation reservation
• An International Certificate of Vaccination is required
• Must have proof of return ticket
• Must present proof of yellow fever vaccination
• Passport required: Indian passport valid for the period of intended stay
• Entry requirement: Must hold proof of return or onward ticket

12. Mauritius

• Passport required: Indian passport valid beyond the period of stay
• Must have proof of sufficient funds to cover the length of your stay, a confirmed hotel reservation and a valid onward or return ticket
• Require a yellow fever vaccination certificate if traveling from a high-risk country
• Passport required: Indian passport valid for 6 months

14. Senegal

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for 6 months beyond the date of entry
• Must hold proof of onward or return travel, proof of accommodation and proof of sufficient funds
• Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required

15. Barbados

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for the duration of stay
• Must have a return ticket to the country of residence, proof of intended stay in Barbados and evidence of sufficient finances
• Children under the age of 18 must have parent/guardian approval

16. Dominica

• Passport required: A valid, up-to-date Indian passport is required. You might also be asked to show a government-issued identification card (e.g. driver’s license)
• Duration of stay : 6 months
• Must present proof of accommodation, proof of return ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay in Dominica

17. Grenada

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival
• Duration of stay: 3 months
• You must have a valid onward or return ticket to enter Grenada
• Passport required: Indian passport valid for at least 6 months 
• Must pay a $10 tourist fee upon entry

19. Jamaica

• Passport required: A valid Indian passport
• Must hold proof of onward or return travel
• Depending on the country of origin, you may have to present a yellow fever vaccination certification upon arrival

20. Saint Kitts and Nevis

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for a minimum of 6 months from the date of entry
• Must complete an online Immigration and Customs ED Form before arrival
• You may be asked to show proof of onward or return travel

21. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

• Passport required: Indian passport with a minimum validity of 6 months
• Must have a return or onward ticket.
• Visitors must declare where they intend to stay and the purpose of visit in the Entry Permit

22. Trinidad and Tobago

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for 6 months beyond the period of intended stay
• Proof of onward or return travel and proof of sufficient funds must be presented
• Passport required: Indian passport that doesn’t expire within 6 months of departure from Fiji
• Duration of stay: 4 months
• Proof of return tickets showing the date of departure from Fiji and the next destination
• Must present proof of sufficient funds in the form of a bank statement
• One clear passport page is required for the entry stamp

24. Kiribati

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for at least 6 months on the day of departure from Kiribati
• Total stay cannot exceed 90 days in any given 12-month period

25. Micronesia

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for 120 days beyond the date of entry
• Must complete the Customs, Immigration & Quarantine form that can be obtained at the airport
• Must present proof of onward or return travel
• Must pay a 20 USD departure tax when leaving Micronesia

26. Vanuatu

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay
• Must have sufficient funds to cover your stay
• Must have proof of onward or return travel
• A confirmed accommodation address must be presented
• Must complete the immigration form provided on the flight or on arrival

Territories

01. british virgin islands (british territory).

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for 6 months from the date of entry
• Duration of stay: 180 days
• Entry requirement: Proof of onward travel (departure) from the British Virgin Islands

02. Cook Islands (New Zealand Territory)

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the planned period of stay
• Duration of stay: 31 days
• Entry requirement: Must have proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay, proof of accommodation reservation and proof of return or onward travel

03. Montserrat (British Territory)

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for 6 months after the planned date of return
• Travelers must comply with Antiguan entry requirements before they can travel to Montserrat as flights are only from Antigua
• You must pay an embarkment tax of EC$35 before you leave Montserrat (included in airfare if departing by air to Antigua)
• Visitors must complete an Immigration/Customs Declaration Card

04. Niue (New Zealand Territory)

• Passport required: Indian passport valid for at least 3 months after the planned arrival date
• Must hold a New Zealand visa as flights to Niue are only from New Zealand
• Must show proof of pre-booked accommodation for the entire duration of stay, proof of funds to stay in Niue and a confirmed onward or return ticket

05. Pitcairn Islands (British Territory)

• Passport required: Indian passport with at least 6 months validity on entry
• You must prove you have sufficient funds to cover your trip
• Medical insurance including cover for evacuation is mandatory
• A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers from high-risk countries

With summer kicking in, you have the official licence to chill. A spanner in the works could be visas, with long waiting times—stretching into weeks, in some cases. Luckily, there are a whole host of countries that Indians can travel to without a visa . The catch, however, is that many of these are not easy to get to—some of them require spending what could feel like a lifetime in a connecting flight. But to help carve out your summer plans, here’s a list of countries that let Indian passport holders in without a visa and the validity period of the stay there: Note: Some countries still require you to obtain a permit at the point of entry, and it's important that you don’t overstay your visa-free stay period in the country.

No visa is required for Indian citizens visiting Vanuatu, a South Pacific Ocean nation made up of about 80 islands.

Indians travelling to Rwanda – a landlocked country in the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa – can stay visa-free for up to 30 days.

Kenya, an African country famous for its wildlife reserves, offers a visa-free stay for Indian citizens.

Where can you travel without a passport? Places to visit as passport backlog continues

A passport can help you access the nearly 200 countries that make up the world, but even without that international document, United States travelers can still see some exciting parts of the globe.

Currently, passport applications are backed up and delayed , forcing people to wait between eight and 12 weeks to get their documents, limiting travel plans. 

However, there's no need abandon all hope of exciting vacations : While you can't get to any international destinations without a passport , there are some places that U.S. travelers can go to with just their state-issued ID. 

Where can I travel without a passport? 

The United States has five permanently inhabited territories: American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. American Samoa  requires a passport . However, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands and Puerto Rico are accessible to United States travelers even without a passport,  according to the federal government . 

In the U.S. Virgin Islands, you can bask in the sun on the territory's famous white-sand beaches on islands like St. Croix and St. Thomas and explore tropical reefs in clear blue waters. The Northern Mariana Islands offer a mix of relaxing beaches and exciting mountains perfect for hikers. In Puerto Rico, travelers can experience the history and culture of San Juan or adventure in the El Yunque tropical rainforest.  

According to  entry and exit requirements published by the territory of Guam, U.S. citizens visiting are required to have a passport, but "on a case-by-case basis, photo I.D. and proof of citizenship may be accepted." Guam also offers gorgeous beaches and interesting slices of World War II history. 

Are there cruises that don't require a passport?

There are also unique travel opportunities, like closed-loop cruises, which can allow people to get out and explore. These are a little trickier, said Peter Greenberg, CBS News' travel editor. They aren't as great an option as they may sound, because few companies offer them. 

"How many of those are there? Very few. We're talking about a cruise that leaves a port in the United States and goes to another port in the United States, and those don't happen very often," Greenberg said. This is because of a 1939 piece of legislation called the Jones Act, which said that any ship not registered in the U.S. could not sail between two U.S. ports without stopping in a foreign port first.   Most cruise ships are not registered in the United States, Greenberg said, making them susceptible to this law. "Closed-loop cruises are really a misnomer, because while they're technically possible, nobody does them." 

Previously, Americans were able to travel between Canada and Mexico without a passport, but that has been changed and is no longer an option, Greenberg said. 

While delays are affecting passport wait times, Greenberg said the best advice he could give people who want to see the world is that they fill out their applications. 

Even if you already have a passport, the delays could still impact your travel plans. Most countries require passports to be active for at least six months after the length of your trip, so if you have plans that would not be viable with those requirements, it's important to renew your passport as soon as possible. You should also check entry requirements — some countries may require as many as two blank pages in your passport, so if you don't have that available, you'll need a new passport. 

Still, Greenberg said, it's worth the time and investment to have the international document. 

"The number of places you can travel without a U.S. passport is pretty small," Greenberg said. "A passport is the best investment you could make."

If getting a passport in time for your next trip isn't an option at all, there are plenty of places in the United States worth taking a trip to. A U.S. News & World Report ranking looking at destinations for 2022-2023 found that the Grand Canyon was the best place to visit in the country, with spectators coming from all over the world to take in the gorgeous formations and visit other gems in Arizona's desert. 

A TripAdvisor Traveler's Choice Awards poll published in 2022 found some crowd-favorite destinations in the United States. At the top of the list is Las Vegas, beloved for its glittering nightlife. Next are Oahu and Maui in Hawaii, where travelers can soak in the sun and check out some adventurous island activities. Fourth is Florida's Key West, the southernmost point of the United States. Other highly-ranked destinations included New York City, New Orleans and Nashville.

Places to travel to without a passport

According to the Passport Index from 2023, the Indian passport is in 72 place in the ranking of strength. So, Indian citizens can travel to around 30 destinations visa-free. However, what in the case of travel without a passport? There are two places that offer that: Nepal and Bhutan. To go there, Indian nationals need only an ID card.

Bhutan is a country of traditional Buddhist culture that offers a lot to tourists. You can find many attractions there, such as temples, monuments, fortresses, monasteries, and museums. The capital city, Thimpu, gives a chance to enjoy the marvelous views of the Himalayas and Raidak river. Bhutan is best explored on foot, and thanks to this, you can feel the tranquil atmosphere around. Among the places worth visiting are Punakha, Jakar, Trongsa, the Jigme Dorji National Park, and Bondey Lhakhang.

It is recommended to visit that country between October and December, as the weather is the best during that time. Indian citizenship holders may visit it as long as they provide a valid identification document, such as a passport or ID card.

Nepal (officially the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal) is located in the central Himalayas in South Asia. If you are dreaming about reaching the summit of the highest mountain in the world and focusing on mountaineering adventures, it is the perfect place for you.

Besides that, you can admire a number of temples, museums, and monuments in Nepal – a country of traditions and ancient cultures. The cities Bhaktapur and Patan give the one-of-a-kind charm and are perfect for leisure, while Pokhara will be ideal for adventure lovers. Also, you can visit national parks, such as Bardia National Park or Chitwan National Park. As in Bhutan’s case, Indian nationals can go to Nepal without a passport and a visa. However, an identification document is still needed.

The places listed below require a valid passport, but no visa is needed if you want to go there as an Indian citizen:

• Cook Islands
• El Salvador
• Saint Kitts and Nevis
• Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
• Trinidad and Tobago

What places offer an eVisa to Indian passport holders?

The following destinations offer  electronic visas for Indians (thus, they are not allowed to go there without a passport and visa):

• Antigua and Barbuda
• Burkina Faso
• Democratic Republic of the Congo
• Ivory Coast
• Equatorial Guinea
• Papua New Guinea
• São Tomé and Príncipe
• South Africa
• South Sudan

It is very easy to get an online visa. Pick a foreign country from the above list and prepare an electronic device with an internet connection. Then, take part in the online process; complete the visa application form by providing the necessary information (name, surname, nationality, etc.), cover the service fee, and wait for processing.

Visa on arrival

Visa on arrival is available for Indians for the places listed below:

• Guinea-Bissau
• Marshall Islands
• Sierra Leone
• Saint Lucia
• Timor-Leste

In order to obtain a visa on arrival, Indians need to take part in the process of application after arrival in the country during border crossing.

It is not possible to go to the following destinations without a passport and a visa from the embassy or consulate:

A traditional visa can be obtained at the embassy or consulate. An applicant must contact the office, make an appointment, attend the interview, cover the fee, and wait for processing.

Passport Index has become the most popular interactive online tool to display, sort, and rank the world's passports. The ranking is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

In this year's list, six countries shared the title of the world's most powerful visa - France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain. Citizens of the six nations can travel to 194 countries without a visa.

Afghanistan, occupies the bottom spot on the list, with access to just 28 countries without a visa. Syria, with visa-free access to only 29 destinations, holds the second-lowest position, followed by Iraq with 31 and Pakistan with 34.

India has jumped seven places to reach 83 in the latest Henley Passport Index rankings for 2022.

The global pandemic and the cross border restrictions thereby may have bound us to our homes for the past two years, but the future for travel looks promising.

India’s passport power has improved this quarter compared to 2021. It now ranks at 83rd position in the Henley Passport Index, climbing seven places from 90th rank last year.

With this, Indian passport holders can now visit 60 destinations worldwide including Oman and Armenia (latest additions) without obtaining a visa. India has added 35 more destinations since 2006. Check the list below.

The results also place Japan and Singapore at the top, with Germany and South Korea holding the second spot. Without taking temporary COVID-related restrictions into account, passport holders of the two Asian nations can now enter 192 destinations around the world visa-free – 166 more than Afghanistan, which sits at the bottom of the index.” Here’s a list of the most powerful passports in 2022 along with the number of countries they can travel to:

Passports might soon be digital and have a microchip

Another thing to look forward to is the promise of being a little less worried about the safety of your passport when you’re out and about. Although the document is currently printed on booklets, the Indian government has issued 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports with an implanted electronic microprocessor chip, in a move to prevent passport fraud and make going through immigration a lot easier. The document will be based on secure biometric data and will be compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

To go through with the production, the Indian Security Press (ISP) Nashik has been given permission to purchase electronic contactless inlays. That’s not all, the country plans on implementing fully digital passports that can be saved on smartphones. This task, the government has entrusted to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Indian passport holders can now travel to these 57 countries visa free

If you hold an Indian passport, planning your next holiday abroad just got easier. According to the Henley Passport Index, India has stepped up and significantly improved its passport ranking by five points from last year, settling on the 80th spot. Thanks to this, Indian citizens can now travel to 57 destinations completely visa-free or with visa-on-arrival access.

Although countries like Indonesia, Rwanda, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe are included in this list, places like China, Japan, Russia, and the United States of America are among the 177 countries that do not fall under this list and would still require you to go through the tedious process of visa applications to visit these places.

The Henley Passport Index was invented nearly 20 years ago by Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, the chairman at Henley & Partners. The index is based on exclusive and official data from the International Air Transport Association and provides a ranking of all the passports according to the number of destinations their holders can visit without a prior visa.

The country that knocked Japan from the first position for having the most powerful passport is Singapore, allowing visa-free entry to 192 global destinations. After consistently being on top for five years, Japan dropped to third place in the Henley Passport Index as the number of destinations its passport can access without a visa fell in the ranks.

Meanwhile, the second spot is shared by Germany, Portugal and Spain. Austria, Finland, France, South Korea, Sweden and Luxembourg stand alongside Japan at the third position, while the United Kingdom, despite its ongoing Brexit situation, jumped up to fourth place. On the other hand, the United States of America slid down two places to the eighth position. India’s 80th position is currently tied with countries like Togo and Senegal.

Afghanistan, Yemen, Pakistan, Syria, and Iraq land at the bottom of the list, with easy access to no more than 35 countries.

If you hold an Indian passport, then you have easy entry to these 57 countries : Barbados, Bhutan, Bolivia, British Virgin Islands, Burundi, Cambodia, Cape Verde Islands, Comoro Islands, Djibouti, Dominica, El Salvador, Fiji, Gabon, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Macao (SAR China), Madagascar, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mauritius, Micronesia, Montserrat, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niue, Oman, Palau Islands, Qatar, Rwanda, Samoa , Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Tunisia, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and lastly, Zimbabwe.

To travel is a wonderful thing and as The Dalai Lama once stated, every year go some place you have never been before. While there are many beautiful sights to see in India itself, it always interesting to know what lies beyond, and to satiate this curiosity we often go through quite a few formalities before we can legally enter another country. Visas have for a long time discouraged travelers from taking that last minute vacation abroad. While getting a Visa for a lot of countries isn't really a hassle, its great to know that there are still a few destinations where Indian citizens are allowed to set foot without a visa. So the next time you want to go abroad and don't want to bother with a visa, try any one of these.

Lush greenery, the mighty Himalayas, and quaint monasteries welcome you to Bhutan with open arms, minus a visa if you are an Indian passport holder. What better place to rush off to for a little break! Bhutan is one of the remotest places in the world and somewhere this makes it an ideal vacation destination for city folks who are looking at disconnecting from the world for a few days. The sole airport at Paro can be reached via only Druk Air from Delhi and Kolkata . One can also drive down if flying isn't working out. Places to visit includes, Paro, Thimpu, Dochu La Pass, Taktsang Lakhang and Gangtey.

2. Dominica

Dominica is not the short form for Dominican Republic but is another island in the Caribbeans. Island, sea, Caribbeans; these are all the right words for a perfect beach vacation and it's even better when we say that its visa-free for Indian citizens! thinking of a longer stay? Well! guess what, Dominica allows Indian citizens to stay as long as 22 months without a visa! Ideally meant for those who want to sit back and relax while taking in the views of the gorgeous sea and the occasional snorkeling. The island is rich with lush forests, mountains, as many as 300 rivers and even houses the world's second largest hot spring - Boiling Lake! There are no direct flights to Dominica from India and yes a round trip fare would cost as much as INR 2,00,000. Steep I would say but if cash flow is not an issue, then go for it.

3. Mauritius

I cannot stress enough on the fact that Mauritius is much more than a honeymoon destination, its also a great destination for family trips as well as a trip with friends. Things you can do in Mauritius? Well lets see, Snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, big game fishing, big cat interactions at Casela Nature Park, Sky Diving at Skydive Mauritius, Shopping at Port Louis, enjoy the nightlife at Grand Baie, shopping at outlets of luxury brands rejects and watch some of the most spectacular sunsets of your life as you soak in some of the good life! Think Jamaica and the instant picture that comes to my mind is a lazy day by the beach, sipping on some Pina Coladas while some Reggae music plays in the background. Jamaica is the perfect picture of a tropical island. Lush mountainous forests, reef lined coasts and great nightlife. Its as if Jamaica was created so that the world could have a perfect place to visit for a break. I mean Bob Marley was born here, shouldn't that be reason enough anyway?! Travellers do not need to apply for a Barbados visa from India, but there are a few steps to follow in order to enter the country. Those entering the country need to apply for visas on arrival; however, there is no fee included.

• Visit the official Barbados Immigration Department website
• Fill out the visa application form
• Submit travel documents to the address mentioned on the website
• Check in at the immigration counter with your passport upon arrival in Barbados
• You will be granted a stay of up to 90 days

Being a neighbour of India, it is relatively easy to enter Bhutan. The best part is that Bhutan is one of the visa-free countries for India. All you need is a valid passport or any other proof of identification. But what makes this country so attractive? It can be because of its vibrant festivals like Thimphu Tshechu and Paro Tshechu, as well as its iconic attraction, Taktsang Palphug Monastery, which looks like it is attached to the cliff. So, if you are visiting Bhutan from India, here are a few things to remember.

Bhutan entry requirements

You do not need a visa if you are travelling to Bhutan for no longer than 14 days. However, you will need to meet these eligibility criteria.

• A passport valid for a minimum of six months or voter identity card
• Entry Permit if you are entering Bhutan by land

A mountainous Caribbean island nation, Dominica has tropical and balmy weather. It is home to natural hot springs and tropical rainforests, along with the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The national park is where you will find a 1,342-m-high volcano. Some of the best features of this country are their 65-meter-tall Trafalgar Falls and narrow Titou Gorge. To enter this beautiful country, you can simply book your flights to Dominica from India. There is no visa requirement for Indian nationals visiting Dominica for the purposes of either tourism or business for a period of six months.

You do not need a visa if you are travelling to Dominica for a period of six months. However, you will need to meet these eligibility criteria.

This Caribbean country called Grenada is a smaller island dubbed the “Spice Isle.” The reason behind this is because of the fertile volcanic soil which is great for planting various spices like cinnamon, cloves, fragrant nutmeg, vanilla, and cocoa. Another reason you need to visit this country is the fact that, no visa is needed for Indian passport holders. Now this is something you definitely need to check it out.

Grenada entry requirements

You do not need any visa if you are travelling to Grenada but you will need to meet these eligibility criteria. 

This country in the Caribbean shares its borders with the Dominican Republic. Despite the 2010 earthquake in Port-au-Prince, the country still oozes natural beauty. There are a few sightseeing places, such as Gelee Beach, La Citadelle, Labadee, Sans Souci Palace, Jacmel, and Musee du Pantheon National Haitien. One of the top tourist attractions in Haiti is the Historic Citadelle Laferrière, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So, if you have an Indian passport, you can visit Haiti without the need to apply for a visa from India.

There is no need for Indian citizens to apply for a visa to enter Haiti for a short stay. You will be allowed a stay for up to 90 days without requiring a visa. But some of the travel requirements you need are listed below. 

Probably one of the most famous regions of China, Hong Kong offers a mix of natural and architectural beauty. An individual will receive a maximum of 14 days of visa-free entry in Hong Kong.

Senegal is one of the most beautiful countries with amazing cities, nightlife, national parks, and many tourist sites to keep you occupied. From the small town of Popenguine to the French influence city of Saint-Louis, scenic Goree Island, and mesmerising pink coloured Lake Retba, life here is simply worth exploring.

Senegal entry requirements

Indian passport holders are not required to undergo the entry visa formalities; thus, Indian citizens can enter the country without a visa for 90 days. The following are the documents required:

Why is this dual island in the Caribbean worth a visit? Well, this country is dotted with history; you can witness amazing architectural wonders, go for a hike across the beautiful rainforests, and stroll on the white sandy beaches. Trinidad and Tobago entry requirements

One of the best parts of travelling to Trinidad and Tobago is that Indian nationals do not need to apply for a visa. Some of the documents you will need are listed below.

Montserrat is one of the Caribbean Islands surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean. This country is part of the British Overseas Territories. It is famous for the Soufrière Hills volcanos which erupted and caused massive destruction in the 1990s. Despite the natural disaster, the island still possesses beautiful sites, unique black sand beaches, colourful coral reefs, dramatic cliffs, and breathtaking shoreline caves. A vacation here is worth every second not only because of the many places worth seeing but also since it is visa-free for Indians.

Iran, Thailand allow visa-free entry to Indian passport holders; list of places to travel without visa in holiday season

Indian passport holders can rejoice as several countries are waving off visa requirements. here are other nations you can travel to in the holiday season..

The upcoming year is a great opportunity for Indian passport holders. Why, you ask? Well, many countries have recently waived visa requirements for Indian tourists. You can take full advantage of this new rule to travel to your heart's content without the added headache of figuring out visa rules and getting a visa approved for visiting a new nation. While Iran was the most recent country to announce visa-free travel for Indian passport holders, other nations in this list are Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Kenya. Therefore, Indians during the holiday season can now travel to several destinations with extended visa-free privileges.

Countries indians can travel to without visa in holiday season.

Earlier last month, the Thailand government delighted Indian tourists by announcing that Indian passport holders will not require a tourist visa to enter Thailand from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024 . The Thai authorities made the temporary visa exemption for a 30-day stay for tourism purposes. Sri Lanka also announced the same provision for Indian travellers till March 31, 2024, for a 30-day stay. This week, Iran waived visa requirements for 33 countries, including India. Last month, Malaysia allowed Indians a 30-day visa-free arrival from December 1, 2023. Lastly, Kenya will also permit tourists from any corner of the globe to enter without a visa.

Apart from the recent additions of Thailand, Malaysia, Kenya , Iran and Sri Lanka to the list of countries that allow Indian tourists to enter without a visa, over 20 more nations do not require a visa to enter for Indian passport holders. They are --

Meanwhile, a few other countries offer visa-on-arrival options for Indian passport holders . They are Seychelles, Maldives, Indonesia, Samoa, Tanzania, Marshall Islands, Palau Islands, Tuvalu, Iran, Jordan, St. Lucia, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Bolivia, Burundi, Cape Verde Islands, Comoro Islands, Djibouti, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Togo, and Zimbabwe .

8 Beautiful Places Where You Can Go Without a Passport

R ight now, there are unprecedented delays with the State Department issuing new passports and passport renewals , due to a bottleneck after pandemic shutdowns. With 500,000 weekly applications now rolling in, there's a huge backlog for passports. And if you're one of the unlucky Americans anxiously waiting for the State Department to catch up, you may be wondering what places you can travel to without a passport.

If you don't have a passport altogether, you're also not alone. In 2022, according to the State Department, there were 151,814,305 valid U.S. passports in circulation, while the U.S. population was 333,287,557—meaning approximately 55 percent of Americans don't have a passport.

Luckily, there are many exciting places in the U.S. that you can check off your travel bucket list without a passport or visa. America is home to adorably quirky small towns , beautiful national parks, and even gorgeous beaches —all reachable without a passport. And there are even U.S. islands and some territories, such as the U.S. Virgin Islands, where you can visit without a passport.

It can get confusing, however, as there are also other U.S. territories, like Guam, where you do need a passport to visit. You may also have concerns about whether to bring a passport when it comes to closed-loop cruises, especially ones that dock in other countries like Canada and Mexico. After all, bringing a passport when you don't need it makes for just one more important thing you have to worry about losing. 

To help make your trip planning as stress-free as possible, we spoke with travel agents and citizenship advisors to better understand where exactly U.S. citizens can travel without a passport—and why it's smart to travel with one in certain circumstances.

Why Don't I Need a Passport to Travel to Certain Areas?

If you're traveling within the U.S. and certain territories, you may not need a passport, says Tonya Waite , travel agent and founder of Belle Vie Travel .

"This encompasses the familiar 50 states and the U.S. territories including destinations like Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands," Waite explains. Travel to these areas is considered domestic travel, similar to a flight from New York to Chicago.

As far as closed-loop cruises go (cruises that depart from the U.S. to Bermuda, Canada, Caribbean, and Mexico that end at the same port), Ilisa Oman , a travel agent at One World Family Travel , assures travelers that they don't need proof of passport because of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) . For this type of travel, a state-issued driver's license or ID is typically fine.

However, there are exceptions. Keep reading for specific identification requirements related to certain areas.

Where Can I Go Without a Passport?

U.s. territories.

With its stunning white sand beaches, snorkeling, and Danish colonial architecture, St. Thomas is beloved a Caribbean island. As a U.S. citizen, you don't need a passport to visit U.S. Virgin Islands, but you do need one to visit the British Virgin Islands. St. Thomas is located in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as Global Residence Index founder Mark Damsgaard notes, so you only need to present a government-issued ID with your photo.

Tropical paradise St. Croix also has pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and championship golf courses. And it's also another one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Thus, you're not required to bring a passport when traveling to and from the island, Damsgaard says.

The smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John boasts the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, which offers scuba diving, hiking, and prehistoric archaeological sites. Damsgaard notes that because St. John is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, you don't need a passport in order to travel there.

Northern Mariana Islands

The same rules apply to the Northern Mariana Islands, which consist of 14 tropical islands, with sandy shores and blue waters, and offer activities like windsurfing, cavern dives, and jungle treks. "U.S. citizens can visit the remote islands of the Northern Mariana Islands without a passport, but you need to have a government-issued proof of identification with you," Damsgaard explains.

Puerto Rico

An unincorporated U.S. territory, this Caribbean island features its sandy beaches, mountains, waterfalls , and the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. If you're a U.S. citizen traveling from anywhere within the U.S., then you don't need a passport, Damsgaard says. However, by May 2025, the Real ID Act will be in effect, he adds, "so if your state isn't compliant with this Act, you will need a passport to visit Puerto Rico."

You do need a passport to visit the westernmost territory of the U.S. "In general, Guam requires U.S. citizens to have a valid passport when entering the island," Damsgaard says. "On a case-by-case basis, you might only be required to have a valid proof of identification or citizenship." However, it's better to travel with one, just in case. And it is well worth it to explore its white-sand beaches, the culture of the local Chamorro people, and unique stone structures.

American Samoa

An unincorporated U.S. territory, American Samoa includes seven volcanic islands in the South Pacific. "The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) does not exercise jurisdiction over the islands," Damsgaard explains. So, you still need to have a passport when traveling to its islands.

Closed-Loop Cruise Destinations

The Bahamas

With 16 islands, the Bahamas feature both white and pink sand beaches, blue-green waters and coral reefs, and golf courses—making it a popular cruise destination. According to Nassau Paradise Island, an island in the Bahamas, those arriving to the Bahamas on a cruise ship that departs from U.S. soil may be able to provide WHTI documents instead of a passport. But travelers should confirm that before setting sail. Also, be careful of making sure your passport won't expire within six months of your departure.

The Central American country is home to unparalleled natural wonders, including hot springs, tropical rainforests, and one of the most important nesting spots for sea turtles. For cruises stopping in Costa Rica, as long as the cruise begins and ends at the same U.S. port, you don't need a passport to travel there, per CostaRicaCruises.com. You will, however, have to show proof of U.S. citizenship, which can be done with a government-issued ID with a photo or a certified copy of your birth certificate.

Turks and Caicos

An archipelago of 40 coral islands, Turks and Caicos is renowned for its gorgeous white sand beaches and luxury resorts. According to Travel Visa Pro, closed-loop cruise passengers can use WHTI documents in replace of a passport.

The British Virgin Islands

Part of a volcanic archipelago, the British Virgin Islands incorporates about 60 islands of varying sizes. If your cruise docks at the British Virgin Islands (BVIs), you will need to present a passport to enjoy the islands.

Cruises to Mexico highlight the country's tropical jungles, sandy shores, and ancient architecture. Similar to Costa Rica, you only need a government-issued ID with a photo or a certified copy of your birth certificate if traveling via a cruise ship that begins and ends on U.S. soil.

If you're headed to Canada on a cruise, you'll likely see beautiful natural scenery, charming shorelines, and world-class cities. The same identification requirements apply to closed-loop cruises that stop in Canada.

Within the U.S.

The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are a tiny collection of islands nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, about 120 miles off the tip of the state of Florida. The tropical destination is a southern extension of the state of Florida and home to Key West, an ultra-popular vacation spot in the spring and summer. Despite being super close to the Caribbean, U.S. citizens don't need a passport to travel there.

Hawaii is the only U.S. state that is both an archipelago and located in the tropics. And you don't need a passport to visit it and take in its gorgeous beaches, Polynesian culture, or epic natural wonders. However, similar to Puerto Rico, the state of Hawaii will be instituting the Real ID Act in May 2025, so be sure to obtain your Real ID by then.

The northernwest U.S. state, Alaska—with its snowy terrain, extraordinary wildlife, and famed dog sled races—might seem a world away from the continental U.S. Alaska is home to the country's largest national park (13 million-acre Wrangell-St. Elias) , highest peak ( 20,310-foot Denali) , and longest coastline, with 66,000 miles of Arctic and sub-Arctic shorelines.

But U.S. citizens only need a Real ID to travel to Alaska; a passport isn't required. The one caveat to this rule is if you're traveling to Alaska via Canada. Those driving to Alaska from Canada, taking a ferry, or with a layover in Canada, will need to bring a passport with them.

Can Americans go to Europe without a passport?

In short, the answer is no. Whether you're flying or setting sail, you will be prompted to show proof of passport identification upon arrival to a European border control officer. "Americans need a passport when traveling to Europe and the passport must be valid for at least three months prior to your departure from a European country," Damsgaard says.

For example, let's say you've had your passport for two months and three weeks. You will be allowed into the European country, but you will not be allowed back into the U.S. until you hit that three-month validation mark.

Should I bring my passport with me, even if I don't need to?

It's better safe than sorry, Damsgaard advises. "It's better to carry your passport with you even when your destination doesn't require it," he says out of caution.

Waite agrees, noting that traveling with a passport can serve as a valuable contingency plan. "Having a passport on hand can be highly beneficial in situations such as an unplanned layover in a foreign country or any unforeseen travel disruptions," she explains.

Can I use my birth certificate in place of a passport?

Very rarely does a birth certificate carry the same weight as a passport. "Your birth certificate isn't a substitute for a passport," Damsgaard warns. "You can only use it in place of a passport when you travel to other U.S. territories or closed-loop cruises, where you need a proof of identification and nationality."

That said, if you're traveling to an unfamiliar territory or are concerned about unplanned international affairs (like a flight change), Damsgaard highly recommends bringing a valid passport just to be safe. It's better to be prepared, especially if you're traveling solo or to a destination where you don't know anyone.

What happens if you travel without a passport?

Traveling domestically, including to U.S. territories, without a passport typically isn't an issue. It's traveling internationally without a passport when you start running into problems. If you travel without a passport to a country that requires proof of one, you likely will be denied entry, says Oman. Realistically, you probably won't even make it that far because security won't let you board the plane, or a ship if you're traveling by sea.

In terms of closed-loop cruises, you could get stranded in a foreign country, due to missing the ship or a medical emergency. In those cases, you will need to go to the nearest U.S. embassy and obtain an emergency passport to fly home. Oman warns that is an expensive and time-consuming process.

From Alaska's stunning arctic landscape to Puerto Rico's lush, tropical jungles and the pristine white sand beaches of St. Thomas, there are many beautiful and transportive places you can travel to without a passport as a U.S. citizen.

But while there are several places where you can go without one, it doesn't hurt to travel with a passport in the event of an emergency or unplanned travel disruption, such as a layover or flight cancellation. In any case, double check what identification documents are needed to enter the country you're visiting.

There can be many barriers getting in the way of travelling — the cost, getting time off and rearranging care commitments.

But for many women there can be an added barrier — having no one to go with.

There seems to be more of a stigma about women travelling alone than men. 

Because it's not just loneliness or the potential awkwardness of being alone that can put some women off travelling solo — it's also about safety.

'Geography of fear' creates a barrier for women

Catheryn Khoo, professor and researcher of hospitality and tourism at Torrens University, says safety is an issue for everyone, not just women.

"It is more the social discourse around safety that is a huge barrier for women wanting to travel solo," Dr Khoo told the ABC.

"The media perpetuates danger by reinforcing.

"It creates the geography of fear for women and incites self-doubt."

But Dr Khoo says there are many good reasons for women to travel on their own.

"Women find themselves tied to the responsibilities attached to their roles as women, mothers, daughters, wives, and partners.

"But when they go on a solo journey, they no longer have to fulfil these roles.

"They live only for themselves and only have themselves to take care of."

And when they share these experiences, it can also empower other women to break the stigma. 

"Women who have actually travelled solo are creating a social acceptance of doing so, which gives others courage to do the same," Dr Khoo says.

"For these women, the motivations are personal growth, self-discovery, empowerment, and independence."

We spoke to three women about their experiences travelling alone. 

'Yearning for adventure'

Eleea Navarro has climbed Mount Fuji, ridden bareback with Andalusian horses in Spain and braved the heat of the Sahara Desert. 

And she did it all on her own.

"I feel confident travelling by myself," Eleea tells the ABC.

"And the thing that still pushes me to travel is the thrill of the unknown, my yearning for adventure, wanting to connect with new people, and wanting to get to know myself better.

"The beauty of going solo is that the only person you have to convince is yourself."

'Liberating' and 'overwhelming'

Travelling abroad was never a possibility for Chelsea Golding's family when she was growing up.

But now she's in her 20s, things are different. 

So when the timing felt right in 2023 she decided it was "now or never" and went on a solo trip through South-East Asia for three months.

"Going off on my own for the first time was definitely a shock to the system," Chelsea tells the ABC.

"It went in waves where it was the most liberating feeling, to something that felt quite overwhelming.

"But I would absolutely do it again, it was an amazing experience."

Writing the next chapter

For Donna Manders, the catalyst for her solo adventure was a little different.

After her divorce a few years ago, she found herself experiencing a lack of identity, not knowing who she was or where she fitted in. Even though she had love and support from her children, family, friends and work colleagues.

"I felt like I still had so much to offer and that I was only halfway through my life story," Donna tells the ABC.

"The usual commentary around situations like this, a middle-aged, divorced woman with grown children, is 'just keep going as the best is behind you now'.

"But that didn't feel right to me."

So, with an unexplainable desire to push herself, Donna decided to take a leap of faith and write the next chapter of her life story.

She travelled for two and a half months through Italy, England, and Scotland solo.

"Although it was a journey of emotions along the way, I learnt how capable and resilient I actually am," she says.

"I learnt to trust my intuition, lean into the solitude and silence, so I could finally hear myself."

But it wasn't all sunshine

Eleea says being able to travel is an incredible privilege, but warns that it is romanticised online.

"Just like in real life, you're likely to get exhausted, ripped off, sick, injured, financially stressed, overwhelmed, lost, confused, or lonely.

"I've experienced everything from intense food poisoning while on a 10-hour bus commute, being scammed by a dilapidated half-built resort in Hoi An, and getting bitten by bed bugs from a cheap hostel in Budapest.

"I was also depressingly lonely for days on end on one of my first solo trips to Vietnam.

"I resorted to crossing my fingers as people walked past, hoping they'd talk to me."

Donna says that although she felt excitement and joy, there were times where she felt isolated, lonely and sad, but was able to navigate her way out of those feelings with a few tools.

"I repeated my favourite affirmations, listened to music — this is where your favourite playlist comes into the picture — wrote in a journal, and just learnt to trust myself."

Chelsea recalls times where she was shouted at and experienced catcalling in Malaysia.

"There's probably nothing I could have done in that situation to make it less confronting, as I was already dressing modestly to respect the customs."

What are their safety tips?

Eleea recommends walking with confidence and trying not to look like a tourist.

"If you're following directions on maps, try putting one headphone in your ear to listen to the audio cues, instead of constantly looking down at the map on your phone," she said.

"This helps you stay more aware of your surroundings and look more confident, like a local."

Eleea says she also wore a plain ring on her wedding finger as a deterrent from unwanted attention.

Here's some more tips from our three solo travellers:

• Learn the language and customs of your destination 
• Give friends and family members your full itinerary
• Never go overseas without travel insurance
• Dress simply and don't wear expensive jewellery to avoid unwanted attention
• Keep in touch with a good support network, even if they're back home
• Switch on a 'find my phone' setting on your smartphone
• Travel light with your luggage so you confidently carry everything without help
• Book accommodation near public transport
• Project a sense of being in control, especially in crowded places and public transport areas
• Be wary about giving out the address of your accommodation
• Get an e-SIM or local SIM card that allows you to make calls and access the internet
• Call family of friends while walking out at night on a quiet road
• Carry your valuables in bum bag strapped around your waist or a crossbody bag
• Wear a backpack on the front of your body when in crowded places or on public transport

How to overcome solo travel fears

Do your homework before you start booking.

" Join a supportive online community that supports women's travel," Dr Khoo says.

"This will mitigate perceived risks, and eliminate fear, doubt, and anxiety.

"You can also read the empowering literature on solo travel and be inspired by the stories."

This was something Donna couldn't recommend enough.

Chelsea and Eleea recommend staying in hostels as a way to meet fellow travellers and build a sense of community away from home.

"I would often meet friends in my hostel dorm or on free walking tours on my first day in a new destination," Eleea says.

"I usually opt for the largest mixed gender hostel dorm available, as it's typically the cheapest and the most likely place to meet new friends.

"And most importantly, don't be afraid to say hello to somebody and start a conversation."

Prepare yourself for a certain level of discomfort, Chelsea says. 

"You can plan as much as possible but there will always be an element that you can't predict or feels out of your control.

"So being willing to be uncomfortable is necessary."

But Eleea believes overcoming these minor discomforts can make you more confident and resilient person.

"Plus if nothing goes wrong, then you have no funny stories to tell when you get home."

'Best thing I've ever done'

Donna says travelling on your own takes confidence and courage.

It helps you gain perspective and can reveal strengths you never knew you had. 

This is why Donna says it's the "best thing I've ever done". 

"I highly recommend it to anyone, especially middle aged women who may think their story is over.

"Don't be put off by your age.

"If you want to do it, give it a go."

For Eleea, solo travel has altered the course of her life in the most positive light.

"I have never regretted a trip, even if things weren't perfect.

"I feel so lucky to have the passport and freedom to see the world, and I try to appreciate and immerse myself in every moment."
