Lyon, Provence & the Rhineland

Highlights of rhône river cruises.

The Rhône River winds its way into France from the Rhône Glacier in Valais, Switzerland, meeting the Saône at Lyon. Its waters flow past some of the country’s most significant historic landmarks, some dating back to Roman times. Blanketed with lavender and sunflower fields that display their full color in summer, the Rhône’s Provence region has long been an inspiration to artists. Above all, its vineyards and farms produce France’s famed wines and cuisine. Here are a few sample highlights of a Rhône River cruise:

  • Avignon, “City of Popes,” and its historic palace
  • The massive Roman arena of Arles
  • Espace van Gogh, the Arles hospital that treated the artist
  • Charming riverside village of Viviers
  • The spectacular gorges of the Ardèche plateau
  • Lyon, France’s grand culinary capital
  • Distinctive wineries and cellars of Beaujolais

Champagne post-cruise Details

There is no better way to see France than from the top deck of a 5-star vessel sailing up the Rhone River. Fantastic wine, ancient and modern architecture, outstanding cuisine, incredible history, and unspoiled natural beauty.

Winemakers Chris Peterson of Avennia Winery , Sean Boyd of Rotie Cellars , Peggy and John Bigelow of JM Cellars , and Morgan Lee of Two Vintners will co-host this 7-day, all-inclusive cruise program. Join the ship in Arles, the heart of Provence. Cruise up the Saone and Rhone Rivers through storied wine regions to Macon in Burgundy.

We’ll have the opportunity to sample wines from Burgundy, Provence, and points in between. Enjoy Scheduled evening discussions, cocktails or a glass of wine on deck, dining with friends in the Cezanne Restaurant, wonderful cuisine on and off the ship, and a wide selection of shore tours each day.

This specially chartered cruise includes accommodations on the luxurious SS Catherine as she travels from Arles north to Lyon, all meals, adult beverages, most shore excursions, taxes & gratuities. By chartering the entire vessel, we’re able to offer exclusive low rates to our guests and provide a unique educational and entertaining program on board.

  • Sample vintages as we cruise the Saone and Rhone Rivers.
  • Shore excursions in the villages on the river
  • Dine with old and new friends
  • Evening entertainment on board and ashore
  • Wine discussion throughout the week

The route of the SS Catherine

DAY 1: Arles (Embark)

Arrive at the Marseille airport, where you will be met and transferred to the ship. You’re encouraged to come early to experience a revitalized Marseille or spend time in Nice, Cannes, or elsewhere on the Côte d’Azur. The ship departs the dock at 7 PM this evening. Guests can board the ship as early as 1 PM.

DAY 2: Tarascon/Arles

Explore one of two sun-drenched Provençal towns today, each with an allure all its own. Known for its remarkable Roman ruins, Arles so inspired Van Gogh that he painted some 200 paintings there.

Beaune

Tarascon boasts an ancient castle, as well as a local legend about a ferocious dragon. Arles has existed since the sixth century BC, when it was first founded by the ancient Greeks. It was here that the Romans built their first bridge across the Rhône River, creating a vital overland route between Italy and Spain and facilitating the expansion of their empire.

Long renowned as one of the region’s most attractive cities, Arles lured artist Vincent van Gogh, who painted hundreds of works here (including Sunflowers and The Yellow House) in just 15 months. A short distance from Arles is the ancient and charming town of Tarascon. Its many medieval sites include a 12th-century church and a 15th-century castle that is rich with tales of a beloved ruler. Bask in the warmth of the Provençal sunlight in either of these friendly Mediterranean towns.

Tarascon

DAY 3: Avignon

The walled city of Avignon is one of the most fascinating towns in southern France, with a host of historic gems to explore—including the fortress residence of rebellious popes who broke from Rome and once lived and ruled here. You’ll see the Palace of the Popes and much more today, and also have a chance to kayak under a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct.

DAY 4: Viviers

Meet some new friends today in the village of Viviers; encounters that really get at the heart and soul of the French people and their culture and traditions. No matter whom you get to know—a pottery maker, a dance teacher or a local homeowner—you’ll have an enjoyable and truly authentic experience, something you’ll remember for years to come.

An enchanting village where time seems to have stopped centuries ago, Viviers has a long and storied past that goes back more than 1,600 years—and a splendid architectural heritage to match. At one time, Viviers was divided along religious lines—the clergy lived in the upper part of the town, the laity in the lower part. Your exploration of the town will take you through both parts, as you begin at the crest and make your way to the riverbank.

Cheese

DAY 5: Tournon (Tain-l’Hermitage), Lyon

If you love fine wine, you’ll love the twin villages of Tournon and Tain l’Hermitage. Whether you opt for a guided walk or a more vigorous vineyard hike, you’ll also have a chance to taste the local specialty—wonderful wines made primarily from Syrah grapes.

DAY 6: Lyon

As the epicenter of French gastronomy, Lyon is a city of tantalizing contrasts. There’s much to explore here, from the work of culinary visionaries to silk weavers’ secret passageways. After your choice of excursions, embrace the locals’ favorite mode of transportation with a patisserie-fueled bike ride—a great way to see the sights. Two rivers: one tranquil, one torrential. Two hills: one for labor, where the sound of the silk weavers’ looms used to echo; the other for prayers, crowned by a spectacular basilica.

Two cities, as different as night and day: one boasting colorful Old-World façades, medieval mansions and hidden passageways; one with a sophisticated urbanity reminiscent of Paris. Situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, and with roots stretching back over 2,000 years to the days of Julius Caesar, Lyon is a place of fascinating dualities.

Today you have your choice of ways to explore this city of contrasts: Sample its culinary riches with a visit to its peerless market hall or follow the footsteps of the silk weavers in the old quarter. For a more active option, see the city from its extensive—and lovely—bike paths.

DAY 7: Mâcon (Beaune)

The pace of life is decidedly more relaxed in Burgundy, where endless rows of grapes hang heavy on the vine. The capital of the region’s wine trade, Beaune, is renowned for its history, beauty and highly prized wine, as well as its medieval-era hospital—the Hospices de Beaune. Located in the southernmost part of Burgundy, Mâcon, a Saône River port, is your gateway to Beaune.

DAY 8: Lyon (disembark), transfer Lyon Airport for flights

Disembark the ship. If your flight departs today, you will be transferred to Lyon–Saint Exupéry Airport for your flight home. Alternatively, you may opt to spend a few more days in Lyon, consider a TGV Train to Paris, or join the post-cruise extension to Champagne.

Frequently-Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ for 2024 in France

Uniworld Experience

In July 2015, Northwest Travel chartered the River Royale for seven nights in Bordeaux. My previous river cruising experience up to that time had all been with Viking River Cruises. I could not have been more pleased with my personal experience as coordinator and with the comments and reviews provided by my guests during and after the cruise. Since then, Northwest Travel has chosen Uniworld for 6 river cruise events with the same fantastic service and attention to detail. It was an easy decision to choose Uniworld for this 2024 event.

If you have enjoyed other river cruise companies, I guarantee you will love what Uniworld has elevated the experience to.

Air Transportation

Flight details for arrivals and departures:

My first recommendation for flights is to be aware of how much connection time you’re allowing via Airport such as Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or London/Heathrow. Better to have 3-4 hours connecting and cool your heels in the terminal that try to make a 1-hour connection via Paris. If your inbound flight is even slightly delayed, you’ll have a tough time making that connection. Even if you get there, your bag may not.

The ship departs from the port of Arles in the south of France late in the afternoon on May 12th. It’s suggested that you plan to arrive early to take full advantage of your time aboard. You’re able to board the ship as early as 1:00 PM. Arles is well worth a few days on its own. Think about arriving a few days early.

Marseilles (MRS) is the closest airport to Arles, the start of the cruise. Uniworld provides transfers to the pier in Arles for guests arriving on from 6:00 AM until 4:00 PM on May 12th. There are also fast trains that will take you from the terminal at Charles de Gaulle Airport to central Arles. With one change of train en route, the journey will take a little less than 5 hours. Trains also depart from Central Paris (Gare de Lyon) with about the same travel time.

Flights will range in price depending on schedule, carrier and class of service. Historically, you should expect to pay $1200 for flights into Marseilles, returning from Lyon (LYS) from Seattle or Portland. Fares are about $200 less from San Francisco.

Vancouver continues to be an excellent alternative to Seattle or Portland for discount travel to Europe. Comparisons made for May travel show Vancouver flights between $700-$800 round trip.

The cruise ends in Lyon the morning of Sunday, May 19th. Flights may be booked to depart any time that morning. Uniworld will provide airport transportation for all flights departing from Lyon (LYS) on the 19th from 6:00 AM until 4:00 PM.

Google Flights and Kayak.com offer a feature that allows you to set price alerts on specific itineraries. I’ve found this to be beneficial in the past. Air schedules are generally posted by the airlines 330 days in advance, which is not to say that’s the best time to buy.

Hotel suggestions for guests arriving early or staying later. Both cities are worth a few more days. Arriving early allows you to adjust to any jetlag or time change. It also guarantees that you won’t miss a departure due to delayed flights.

Arles: Two hotels selected that are well-rated and moderately priced. Either a medium walk or a short Uber to the ship.

Hotel L’Arlatan -Upscale property with distinctive style Maison Volver -A little less expensive on a quiet street

Lyon: Both properties were suggested for guests with the group in 2022. There are no hotels that I can suggest close to the ship, so taxi or Uber is necessary.

Fourviere Hotel -Former Convent that makes for a unique accommodation. Hotel de L’Abbaye -Traditional property close to shopping and restaurants

Flights for Guests coming to Nice: You will depart for Nice (NCE) on Wednesday, May 8th, arriving on May 9th.

This day will include round trip transportation to Monaco and the viewing suite, complete with food and drink.

Here is a sample list of some of the houses visited in 2018. Moët and Chandon, Taittinger, Mercier, Pommery, & Comtesse Lafond and a number of independent producers.

** Our coach for CDG Airport will depart approximately 9:30 AM for two hour drive. Expect to arrive at the airport by noon, so any flight home after 2:00 PM will be well timed.

Single price for this tour is $2,700. A discount of $75 applies if paid by check.

Double price is $2,250 per person. A discount of $60 per person applies if paid by check. A deposit of $500 is due at time of confirmation. Balance is with cruise balance in January 2024.

Aboard Ship

The order of the day is casual. There is no reason to pack any formal wear for your time aboard. The cruise line asks that you dress appropriately for dinner and evening time. There will be evening events scheduled both on and off ship. Our winemakers will discuss the regions at associated wines as we progress on our route.

You need not be concerned with motion during the cruise. River cruise ships are not subject to the same type of side to side motion common to ocean-going vessels.

There are three scheduled meals per day with table sizes ranging from two to ten guests. Seating is not assigned. Dine with a group of friends each evening or mix it up to enjoy your meal with friends met along the way. Wine, beer, and spirits are included with your cruise.

If you choose to participate in one or more of the Michelin starred dining options off the ship, you’ll want to dress accordingly. Paul Bocuse restaurant in Lyon, for example, defines their dress code as “elegant casual.” Jackets and trousers are required.

It can be quite warm in the South of France in May. Shorts and tees are perfectly acceptable ashore for touring. Dinners aboard would like a higher standard with a ‘no shorts’ policy in the dining room.

Documentation

You’ll need a valid passport, which much have at least 6 months validity from the date of entry in France. No additional visa is needed for US or Canadian citizens (at least not yet).

Your stateroom

The SS Catherine was launched in 2014. She holds 158 guests in a variety of stateroom configurations and sizes. Some cabins offer picture windows, while others provide French or full-sized balconies. Determine what’s right for you by looking over the cabin descriptions above or visiting the web page at SS Catherine Staterooms .

The ship provides three meals a day, beginning with a breakfast buffet, plated lunch and dinner. Tables are not assigned. You’re free to dine with different group of friends each evening. The ship is able to accommodate a wide range of dietary restrictions and allergies.

The SS Catherine has a wonderful little alternative restaurant located aft on Camargue Deck. This 30-seat Bar du Leopard provides an opportunity for a semi-private dining experience for smaller groups.

Sightseeing

At least one Uniworld shore tour per day is included in the cost of your cruise. These tours are supplemented by additional tours that are available as an option. Tours will include visits to Michelin restaurants, additional visits to wine producers, and a truffle farm experience.

I anticipate that additional wine visits will cost approximately $30-$45 each, mostly to cover transportation costs and tasting fees. Pricing for Michelin Experiences, including the restaurant of Paul Bocuse, will be determined by the menu and Euro exchange. In 2017 and 2022, lunches at these restaurants ranged from $150-$900 per person, depending on the restaurant. These events were so popular and sold out so quickly, that additional experiences will be added this year. Specific pricing will be available in the latter part of 2023. Early booking guests will earn priority in selecting these tour options, though participation may be limited to one per person until additional availability is determined.

May is an excellent time to visit the region. Summer tourists have not yet arrived en masse, and the weather is fairly moderate with average temperatures ranging from 60°-75° in Lyon to 63°-78° in Avignon. Both locations average about an inch of rain for the month. We’ll have over 14.5 daylight hours for touring in May as summer approaches.

Deposit and payment schedule

Payments made to Northwest Travel Service are non-refundable. If you need to cancel, I will do everything possible to find someone to take your place. Cancellation insurance is an option to protect your deposit. Trip cancellation will cost between 6% and 10% of the total cost of your tour. I’ve had very good results with two insurance companies with links provided below.

An initial deposit of $1000 per person is required to confirm your reservation; a second deposit of $2000 per person due June 15th, and  the balance due by January 10th, 2024.

Port or Starboard? Which side should I choose?

I’ve cruised this itinerary a few times and the cruise line has confirmed my opinion that there is little to no beneficial “edge” of one side of the ship or the other. The ship may dock with either side to the shore and there is every possibility that you’ll either raft next to another ship or have a ship tie up next to you. Pick a cabin adjacent to your friends or choose one across the hall from yours so that you’ll always have a view. If you’re doing it right, you won’t be spending much time in your cabin anyway!

What if I need to cancel my cruise?

Because payments are nonrefundable, travel insurance is suggested. Both of the companies listed below have a policy rate calculator online. Enter the cost of your tour and personal data to receive a no-obligation cost estimate.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance There are a lot of insurance companies out there. I don’t sell insurance myself, but can suggest a couple places below that will provide no-obligation quotes. These are two that I have had relatively good luck on with payments of claims.

Rhône Route Rendez-Vous 2024

Rhône Flusskreuzfahrt mit A-ROSA

Highlights of the Rhone River Cruise

The best holidays are when you meet nice people – and yourself..

From Lyon to Viviers, Arles, Avignon and Vienne to Lyon.

The perfect setting for a rendezvous: a city full of winding lanes and Renaissance façades watched over by a lofty basilica. The Saône and the Rhône meet in Lyon before heading off on their honeymoon – to the Mediterranean, of course. You are welcome to join them. The sun sets into the river as you sip your Côte du Rhône. Medieval Viviers is waiting for you, as is the Ardèche, which brings a special element to the ambience: it has dug magical caves up to 300 m deep into the limestone. Above ground the halls of the monumental Papal Palace await you in magnificent Avignon, while in Arles you have your pick of sunny spots on romantic corners. But no fairy tale is complete without white horses. Voilà! Here they are: in the wild Camargue.

Avignon

You’ve probably heard of the famous bridge in the song ‘Sur le pont d’Avignon’. This bridge actually exists, or at least part of it does: wars and floods reduced the bridge’s original 22 arches to 4. In 1660, after yet another flood, the bridge was abandoned. Aside from the bridge, you’re likely to be most delighted by Avignon’s palaces, wines and culture. The Papal Palace is monumentally impressive, particularly in the evening when it is illuminated by a light show.

Lavendel der Provence mit A-ROSA bewundern

Taken literally, savoir-vivre means ‘knowing how to live’. And living well is something that the people of Provence know a great deal about. Surrounded by gnarled olive trees, lilac-hued lavender fields and vineyards that produce the best red wines, it’s a place to relax and enjoy life. In the summer, you can watch one of the local farmers harvest fruit – and maybe lend a hand yourself. Perhaps you’ll even be rewarded with a glass of local wine or a dish of bouillabaisse. Other regional specialities include white nougat from Montélimar, candied fruits from the town of Apt and the famous truffles from the Vaucluse Mountains. Provence is a place where pleasure is a priority

Sightseeing in Arles

The Night Cafe, Cafe Terrace at Night and Trinquetaille Bridge in Arles are just three of Van Gogh’s many works that portray Arles at its most beautiful. However, Van Gogh wasn’t the only big name who was fond of the city. During Roman times, there was already a flourishing metropolis on this spot. Constantine the Great made Arles his seat of government in the fourth century. Nowadays, the city is a blend of modern urban developments and historic monuments – and the inhabitants seem completely at ease living between the past and the present. This kind of laid-back attitude is a special feature of this cruise on the Saône and the Rhône.

And right on its doorstep, to the north-west, is Beaujolais. Enjoy fine food and wine and spellbinding views on your Rhône cruise. Idyllic destinations await you here.

Arles in southern France is the Provençal city par excellence. This sun-drenched city of terracotta-tiled rooftops occupies a broad bend in the River Rhône. Many of its monuments have named UNESCO World Heritage Sites. What’s more, Arles was once a great Roman port. As if all that weren’t reason enough to visit, the city was also home to Vincent van Gogh for a while. Did you know that?

Camargue mit A-ROSA erleben

Where land and sea merge, something wonderful is created. The Camargue is a natural wonder. And you will experience it first hand on this bus tour - with its flocks of flamingos and the famous white horses, the fauna is truly unique. Today, the free-roaming white Camargue horses and Camargue cattle are not wild animals anymore, but are kept on wide pastures that are typical for the region. We will continue to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a major pilgrimage site and a touristic hub of the Camargue. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer church from the 9th century houses sacred relics of Marie Saloné and Marie Jacobé. Since 1448, a pilgrimage to the church has been held twice per year. The centre of veneration of Saint Sarah, also known as Sara the Black, is also here in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, a place of pilgrimage for Roma. After a short walk you will have some free time.

That’s what the French say, anyway. But the only way to be sure is to experience the charm of Provence’s former capital for yourself. We recommend that you begin your excursion by sampling some delicious calissons d’Aix, local sweets made with almonds and melon. Preferably in one of the many cafés along the elegant Cours Mirabeau. Or you could follow in the footsteps of Paul Cézanne, the great Impressionist artist, who had a studio in Aix. And after you’ve had a look around the city, there’ll still be enough time to purchase a typical Provençal souvenir, such as herbs or soap.

Avignon is one of the most popular ports of call on A-ROSA’s Rhône cruises. It is an imposing, historic city in southern France that was home to several of the Catholic popes at one time. The city and the surrounding region have a warm climate thanks to the Mediterranean – which means a pleasant stay for you!

The visit of this fortified site takes you to the great halls, to the chapels, to the private chambers of the Pope and to the terrace with magnificent views of Avignon and the Rhône. Each year in July, one of the largest theatre festivals in the world takes place around the palace. After visiting the palace you will pass the church of St. Agricol and to the ruins of the famous Pont d’Avignon.

5th Day Vienne Arr 09:00 am Dep 09:30 am Lyon Arr 01:00 pm

The multifaceted Vienne was once an important Roman city and, thanks to its location on the Rhône, the gateway to the heart of France. A number of ancient buildings from this period can still be seen today. For example, there is a Roman theatre, which is still used for events such as the summer jazz festival. There is also a very well preserved Roman temple in Vienne, surrounded by an impressive portico.

Vienne

The indoor food market of Lyon is named after Paul Bocuse – and with good reason. This star chef was based in Lyon and so he often shopped here. There are plenty of tasty specialities for you to sample here. But France’s second-largest metropolis has a lot more to offer beyond that. Your tour will continue through the city centre, where you’ll take in some wonderful sights.

the epitome of sensuality

A luxury river cruise on the rhône.

As a torrential mountain stream it thunders through the mountains of the Gotthard Massif, leaves Lake Geneva as a broad current and then turns into a deep, clear blue – the Rhône. Travel on the Rhône has a long history. During construction work in Lyon in 2003, six small ships were found which originated from the first century of our era. Wine was transported on the river in the Middle Ages, and also olive oil in amphora or marble from Italy.

Along the Rhône

The landscape of the Rhône is a dream. It runs through France’s most beautiful regions, such as Burgundy, Rhône-Alpes and into Provence. Enchanting cities such as Arles and Avignon line its banks, beavers and river otters live in its wetlands – and its arms form the Camargue Delta, where flamingos strut through salt lakes and white horses live in the wild. The Rhône is the epitome of sensuality. A river for gourmets and for people who love the beautiful things in life.  The scent of the Rhône is lavender and herbs. Of course, this is probably called savoir vivre .

This city is a jewel for people interested in both yesterday and today. Vienne is a small town, but already boasted 30,000 inhabitants in the 2nd century. Trade and steam navigation brought an upswing in the 19th century. And what can you expect to see? Definitely the Archaeological Museum, the St-Romain-en-Gal museum complex with the “House of the Ocean Gods” and the remains of the former thermal baths. And afterwards, it’s best to sit down in a café and enjoy the present.

At night, the stories seem to emanate from the walls of the nearby houses. Narrow alleys. Cobblestone. This small town is a true gem. Yes, a walk through Viviers is a journey back to the Middle Ages, because the former bishop’s town was spared the destruction of wars. Besides small shops, there are also big things to see. For example, the cathedral with special works of art such as the five tapestries – three of them were given to the bishop by Napoléon III. A highlight in the truest sense of the word is the viewpoint in the upper town. What a view of this enchanting place.

Marc Seguin’s most beautiful suspension bridge spans the Rhône between Tournon and the neighbouring village of Tain-l’Hermitage. Tournon is France “in miniature” : With a castle, a stunning museum dedicated to the history of the Counts of Tournon, maritime navigation and the works of Seguin. And a botanical garden, all very secluded! Don’t miss the exhibition at the historic chocolate factory in Tain-l’Hermitage, very delicious!

This pearl of Provence is surrounded by the most beautiful natural parks in Europe. Today, Arles is the epitome of important art and a contemporary witness to an eventful history, from the amphitheatre to proud patrician houses. And what would Arles be without van Gogh – strolling through the town in the footsteps of this great artist – that too is unforgettable.

Lyon is the destination for fine food fans. 2000 years of rich history. Musée des Beaux-Arts. The old town with cobblestone streets. The Basilica Notre-Dame and a magnificent view over the city and the countryside. Silk painting in the smart working-class district of La Croix-Rousse. The gourmet temple of Les Halles de Lyon de Paul Bocuse. The finest cuisine in the region’s typical “Bouchon” style. So much sensuality. So much pleasure.

It is a city of unparalleled beauty. It curves its way over the river Rhône, and has done so since 1840. The Pont Saint-Bénézet acquired international fame through the song “Sur le pont d’Avignon”. Crossing it, you find yourself immediately in front of the Papal Palace, one of the largest and most important medieval buildings in Europe. It arose, it must be said, out of sheer laziness: For the Archbishop of Bordeaux did not wish to travel to Rome for his papal consecration. He had himself crowned in Lyon and had a palace built in Avignon. A monument.

Our ship on the river Rhône

Riverside ravel.

His music was known for its elegance, exquisite detail and exemplary finish. No wonder the Riverside Ravel bears his name. Sail the Rhône and Saone rivers aboard a ship that is bespoke. The design, the details, the sweet service, it all adds up to a perfectly honed experience that will make you smile for many years to come. We are meticulously crafting cruises that will match the splendor of the landscapes through which you will sail.

More to explore

Once aboard you will have every opportunity to find yourself., we look forward to welcoming you.

rhone river cruise 2024

Cruising is a very popular way to see the world these days, and for good reason. Taking a cruise allows you to see numerous different cities and/or countries within a single vacation, and it’s pretty hassle-free. No need to coordinate hotels and transportation for multiple different destinations, just get on the boat and everything is taken care of for you. And it can be done affordably, if you know some good industry tips and tricks (which WorldMark by Wyndham Travel does, and is happy to share with you — read on).

Ocean cruises are perhaps the better-known option, but river cruises are an up-and-comer in the travel industry, and have grown increasingly popular in the last decade or so. Because of their new-found fame, more and more river cruise vendors are springing up, giving you more options, more price points, and more flexibility if you’re looking to book a river cruise. At this point there are just as many options for river cruises as there are for ocean cruises, which means you can pretty much have your pick of amazing cruises the world over. If a river cruise is calling your name, here is everything you need to know about booking a river cruise.

Pretty much every large river that is near a major metropolitan area has a river cruise option. The European river cruises are probably the most well-known of the river cruise options, and for good reason — Europe’s waterways are very well-connected, making cruising from city to city within Europe an easy way to experience more than one place. But Europe’s rivers aren’t the only ones that offer river cruises. Check out these popular river cruise options, listed by continent:

  • Egypt — Nile River
  • South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe — Chobe and Zambezi rivers"
  • Cambodia and Vietnam — Mekong River
  • China — Yangtze River
  • India — Ganges River
  • Russia — Volga River
  • Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia — Murray River
  • Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary — Upper Danube River
  • Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania — Lower Danube River
  • Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands — The Rhine River
  • France — The Seine, Rhone, and Saone rivers
  • Portugal and Spain — The Douro River
  • Italy — The Po River

North America

  • Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee — Mississippi River
  • Oregon, Washington, and Idaho — Columbia and Snake rivers
  • New York — Hudson River"

South America

  • Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador — Amazon River

There are many perks and benefits to choosing a river cruise over an ocean cruise. For starters, the most obvious benefit is that river cruises can take you to places that ocean cruises can’t. Sure, large ocean liners can hop from island to island in the Caribbean, no problem, but they can’t take you down the Nile River past the pyramids in Egypt, or up the Amazon River surrounded by the Brazilian rainforest and exotic wildlife. When you cruise on a river, you’re able to sightsee 24/7 — there are no full days or nights at sea without land in sight. You’re constantly surrounded by beautiful scenic landscapes, interesting landmarks, and urban areas, both big and small. You’ll never run out of things to look at on a river cruise.

Additionally, river cruises are smaller and more intimate than ocean cruises. On an ocean liner, there may be thousands of passengers and hundreds of options for things to see and do on board. River cruise boats are smaller, with a passenger list in the hundreds instead of thousands, and are quieter, with a more relaxed setting and less glitz and glamor. Unlike ocean cruises, river cruises tend to be truly all-inclusive; on ocean cruises things like shore excursions, alcohol, and some entertainment options cost extra, whereas on river cruises everything from your nightly cocktail to your museum tour is included in the cost. And a bonus: calm river waters generally mean you won’t get seasick!

If you’ve got questions, need a recommendation, or are ready to book an amazing river cruise vacation, make sure to give WorldMark by Wyndham Travel a call. Their friendly, knowledgeable Travel Advisors are well-equipped to make your river cruise dreams come true (and they’ll book your flights and transportation, too!). WorldMark by Wyndham Travel will help save you time and money, and remove the headache of trying to plan and book it all on your own. Give them a call or visit their online booking page today.

rhone river cruise 2024

The 10 finest French river cruises to take this year

T he problem with river cruising is that you often get blindsided by “star rivers”. There are several iconic waterways around the globe that just must be travelled, but benefits can be found if you shop around. Nowhere is this truer than in France .

A short ferry, train or plane ride lets you explore the châteaux of the Loire and the wonders of Paris on Seine, while a trip down the Rhône brings you Van Gogh’s favourite café and the opportunity to dance “sur le Pont d’Avignon”, for a small fee.

The trouble is, stars come with crowds, so looking beyond the obvious is a good idea. I defy anyone to gaze at the roof of the Hospices de Beaune on the Saône and not be mesmerised by its geometrical beauty, or walk the streets of Strasbourg on the Ill and not believe you’re back in medieval times. Sail the great rivers, of course, but don’t forget the little guys.

1. The Seine

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the highlights of this cruise with a personal commentary on the 1066 Norman invasion as you move along its length. The Cathedral in Bayeux is also worth a visit, as is that of Rouen , the ancient capital of Normandy .

A visit to the D-Day beaches at Arromanches is soothed by walking around the harbour at Honfleur, with its narrow five story houses that seem to have been squashed together like the keys on a piano. Do try the local Calvados.

Riviera Travel (01283 893924: rivieratravel.co.uk ) has the 8 day ‘The Seine, Paris and Normandy River’ cruise from £2,229 per person. Price includes Flights/Eurostar, Free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Paris, Giverny, Rouen, Caudebec. Departs 2024 23 rd September.

2. The Gironde, Dordogne and Garonne

Bordeaux is a world capital of wine , so as you might expect, names normally associated with supermarket shelves such as Saint-Emilion and Cadillac are part of this cruise. Entered through one of its seven medieval gates, St Emilion has a charming cobblestone village where Grands Crus Classé wines and beautiful architecture are a perfect match.

Similarly, part of the central square in Libourne is surrounded by the traditional arcades and is especially lively on market days. At Blaye, Vauban’s 17 th century citadel is a military masterpiece complete with village and ramparts to explore.

Scenic (0161 516 5548; scenic.co.uk ) has the 8 day ‘Bordeaux Affair’ cruise from £2,532 per person. Price includes Flights, Free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Bordeaux, Lilbourne, Blaye, Cadillac, Bordeaux. Departs 2024 11 th October.

3. The Rhône, Saone and Seine

Exploring France by travelling on three of its rivers, with extended stays at ports of call to explore their hinterland, is a great way to truly discover the country. This cruise offers a private, after dark concert in Rouen’s cathedral and a visit to the Normandy beaches.

You’ll also lock eyes on the towering 2,000-year-old Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct and view the private rooms at Versailles as Marie Antoinette saw them. In Beaune, taste local camembert along with some of the world’s finest Chardonnay wines, and in Giverny, take a stroll through Monet’s beautiful garden at the house where the painter lived for over 40 years.

Uniworld (0808 168 9231; uniworld.com/uk ) has the 15 day ‘Grand France’ cruise from £5,849 per person. Price includes flights, free wifi and drink/beverages package. Calling at Arles, Avignon, Viviers, Lyon, Mâcon , Rouen, Paris. Departs 2025 23 rd March.

Technically, you’ll see more of Germany than France on this journey, but the River Ill, which surrounds the Unesco-listed Grande Île at the centre of Strasbourg, is worth an honourable mention.

The pink-sandstone facade of the Gothic-style Strasbourg Cathedral, with its cache of ancient murals and astronomical clock, looms large. Canals branch off from the main river course creating scenic walkways and bridges, adding to the allure of the ancient cityscape. Explore the red, half timbered houses of Bernkastel and play spot the castle as you sail further south along the Rhine Valley.

Avalon Waterways (0330 0588243; avalonwaterways.co.uk ) has the 11 day ‘Rhine and Mosel (Southbound)’ cruise from £3,620 per person. Price includes return flights, rail travel, free wines and beers. Calling at Amsterdam , Cologne, Kobelenz, Speyer, Strasbourg, Breisach, Basel. Departs 2024 9th October.

5. The Yonne and Loing

The waters of the Yonne north of Paris are too shallow for bigger boats, so this cruise lets you experience a quieter slice of French history and life. The Cathedral Saint-Etienne in Sens was one of the first gothic cathedrals to be built in France, while Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne lets you visit the grandeur and magnificence of Fontainebleau. Barbizon has a fascinating eponymous art museum and the studios of Rousseau and Millet, who lived and worked here.

Great Railway Journeys (01904 734 152; greatrail.com ) has the 7 day ‘Waterways of The Yonne, Paris and The Petite Seine by Barge’ cruise from £2,595 per person.

Price includes return rail travel from London, free wifi and drinks package. Calling at Paris, Melun, Barbizon, Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne and Sens. Departs 2024 4th September.

6. The Rhône and Saône

There is something magical about Arles. Not just that you can sit in the café where Van Gogh watched the world go by then walk a few yards to explore the virtually intact Roman amphitheatre, but the slow pace of life is all around.

Perched on the banks of the Saône, Mâcon has a café-lined promenade, while an overnight stay in Lyon lets you enjoy the city’s best restaurants and watering holes. At Avignon, you can explore the Palais des Papes as well as the huge indoor market to pick up Provençal snacks.

Newmarket Holidays (0333 060 1339; newmarketholidays.co.uk ) has the 7 night  ‘Rhône, Burgundy and Provence cruise’ from £2,340 per person. Price includes flights, free wifi, premium all-inclusive drinks package. Calling at Chalon-sur-Saone, Mâcon, Lyon, Avignon, Arles, La Voulte-sur-Rhône. Departs 2024  14th September.

7. Canal du Midi

The Mediterranean section of the 18 th century-built Canal du Midi is often referred to as both a technical innovation and a work of art. Between Portiragnes to Béziers alone, you’ll cross an aqueduct over the River Orb and ascend a seven-lock flight of unique, oval gateways. With a visit to the double walled city of Carcassonne and also Pézenas, Languedoc’s ancient capital, a truffle hunt, a private wine tasting and passing through Europe’s oldest canal tunnel, this cruise lets you get under the skin of Provence.

European Waterways (01753 598555; europeanwaterways.com ) has the 6-night ‘Classic Canal du Midi cruise’ from £4,850 per person. Price includes local transfers, all meals with wines on board, a 24/7 open bar, excursions/admittance fees as per the itinerary, bicycles and spa pool. Calling at Marseillan, Portiragnes, Béziers, Capestang, Sallèles d’Aude, Le Somail. Departs 2024 22nd September.

8. The Saône

Passing through Burgundy — a wine region that needs no introduction — this cruise lets you visit walled towns including Beaune with its beautiful 14 th century hospices complete with glazed tile roof and Tournus, which in turn offers its remarkable Romanesque Abbey Saint-Philibert. You’ll berth at towns that reverberate with the names found on sought after red wine labels, finally arriving at the culinary and architectural box of delights that is Lyon.

AmaWaterways (0800 520 2250; amawaterways.co.uk ) has the 7 night ‘Flavours of Burgundy Cruise’ from £2,754 per person based on a Cat E Stateroom. Price includes flights from London or Manchester and savings of £1,000 per couple.  Calling at Dijon, Seurre, Chalon-sur-Saône, Tournus, Mâcon, Lyon. Departs 2025 27th March.

9. The Loire

The chateaux of the Loire will always be a draw, and while this cruise has an all-day excursion to discover them, Nantes is a jewel in its own right. The castle of the Dukes of Brittany, giant mechanical elephants — yes really — and taking coffee in La Cigale,  the wonderful 19 th century Belle Epoch Brasserie, are essential sites to tick off.

Explore Angers with its Terra Botanica, a plant-themed amusement park, the Château d’Angers and its Apocalypse Tapestry and the museum of St Nazaire. The 96-guest MS Loire Princess adds to the experience as a luxury paddle steamer designed specifically for the river.

CroisieEurope (01756 691269; croisieurope.co.uk ) has the 6 day ‘The Loire Valley, a Royal Legacy Cruise’ from £1,752 per person, including all meals, drinks and return flights from London Gatwick and overseas transfers. Calling at St Nazaire, Nantes, Anciens, Chalonnes-sur-Loire, Nantes. Departs 2024 23 rd  July.

10. The Rhône and Rhine

This cruise offers something special. The chance to experience and compare the Provençal lifestyle of Arles with the Franco-German culture of Strasbourg. In essence a cultural journey along the Rhône and the Rhine. Explore Avignon’s grand Palace of the Popes and Cologne’s majestic cathedral, both Unesco sites.

Savour Lyon’s rich culinary traditions and the Rhineland’s hearty flavours and admire the landscapes that inspired Van Gogh in the Netherlands and Provence.

Viking (0800 319 66 60; vikingrivercruises.co.uk ) has the 14 day ‘Lyon, Provence and The Rhineland’ from £5,390 per person. Price includes all meals, drinks and return flights from Gatwick and overseas transfers. Calling at Avignon, Arles, Viviers, Tournon, Vienne , Lyon, Burgundy, Basel, Breisach, Strasbourg, Speyer, Rudesheim. Departs 2025 21st May.

If you’re travelling by Eurostar , many cruise companies now offer regional airport and train station departures. Therefore, the price mentioned on the website can be different to what you actually pay. Plus offers come and go, so it’s always a good idea to look around before you book.
