About Ricky

Find out about the story behind Prince of Travel.

ricky travel plus

Welcome to Prince of Travel!

My name is Ricky, and I started this website to help you raise your travel game. The globe is my passion, and I’m on a never-ending quest to gain a complete understanding of every square inch  of our beautiful planet.

The lay of the land. The amazing people that inhabit this land. The way these people connect and build communities. If it’s related to our world in any way, I love learning and talking about it. That’s why I started this website: to inspire more people around me to head out there and get to know what the world has to offer.

And with the magic of Miles & Points at your fingertips, you don’t have to be rolling in the dough to travel. You don’t even need to spend much money at all. Some of the most satisfying, most luxurious travel experiences out there can be almost free, simply by maximizing travel rewards.

My goal is to teach you these tricks, show you my favourite spots around the world, and inspire you to travel  more  and  better  for  cheaper.

I hope you enjoy the site, and I hope to see my fellow travellers out there soon. The world awaits!

Happy travels, Ricky

Daniel Eilemberg, Simon Brand, Laura Franco, Julio Cesar

Award-winning Colombian director-producer Simon Brand and Miami-based media executive producer Daniel Eilemberg have joined forces with the founders of Emmy-winning Imaginer Films , Julio César and Laura Franco, to launch Clover Studios, a new production services company in Colombia.

The new enterprise is in response to Colombia’s phenomenal growth as a major production center, driven by its competitive production incentives and flourishing creative community.

Popular on Variety

“We are thrilled to embark on this exciting journey with Julio and Laura,” said Brand and Eilemberg, adding: “With Clover, we aim to harness the creativity and passion of Colombia’s vibrant film community and contribute to making Colombia the most important production hub in South America.”

Imaginer Films, based in Medellin, has solidified its position as a key provider of production services within the film and television sectors, playing a pivotal role in the expansion of Colombia’s film industry over the past few decades.

It is one of several production companies that have sprouted up since Colombia saw an uptick in location shoots. Aside from providing services in the production of music videos, commercials, films and television, it will be developing original IP, including the fourth feature film by Brand.

Colombia offers two audiovisual incentives: a Cash Rebate and a Transferable Tax Credit. Additionally, services rendered in the country but exclusively used abroad are exempt from a Value Added Tax.

“The twin strikes in Hollywood impacted location shoots here last year but we expect it to start picking up again,” said Colombian film commissioner Silvia Echeverri.

Brand has helmed 200+ commercials for major brands like Coca-Cola, Nabisco, and BMW, alongside numerous music videos for artists including Ricky Martin, Shakira, and Maluma. He followed his debut feature, “Unknown,” starring Jim Caviezel, Greg Kinnear and Joe Pantoliano, with the box office hit “Paraíso Travel.” His third film, “Default,” stars David Oyelowo.

Recently, Brand served as showrunner and director for Netflix’s “Ritmo Salvaje,” produced Goyo’s HBO special, directed Thalia’s Mixtape series for Paramount +, and helmed “Law and Order: Organized Crime.” He’s been named by Variety as one of Hollywood’s most influential Latinos.

Eilemberg co-founded and led media brand Lil’ Heroes alongside Spanish contemporary artist Edgar Plans. Prior to that, he was a founding partner and president of content at Exile Content, which was later acquired by Candle Media in 2022. As President of Fusion Media Group, he earned over 75 awards, including prestigious journalism honors. Eilemberg also founded Animal Político and Pájaro Político, acclaimed news brands. His executive producer credits include Sundance winner “Science Fair” and Netflix’s “Who Killed Malcolm X.” A 2014 Nieman Fellow at Harvard, he received NAMIC’s 2017 Next Generation Leaders and Luminaries Award.

NASCAR Texas race 2024: Start time, TV, streaming, lineup for Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400

ricky travel plus

The NASCAR Cup Series returns to the Lone Star State for a showdown at Texas Motor Speedway.

Following three races in four weeks at short tracks, plus a road-course race (also in Texas), the series returns to an intermediate track for the first time since the Las Vegas race on March 3.

The first two months of the season have been punctuated by the dominance of Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing, with drivers from those two teams winning seven of the first eight races. Hendrick driver William Byron has three victories already, while JGR’s Denny Hamlin has two. Hendrick’s Kyle Larson, JGR’s Christopher Bell and Daniel Suarez of Trackhouse Racing have one win apiece.

But Texas could present a good opportunity for other drivers to break through. Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch leads all active drivers with four Cup Series wins in Fort Worth -- most recently in 2020 -- and 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick took the checkered flag in 2022.

Who will take the checkered flag on Sunday? Here is all the information you need to get ready for the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas Motor Speedway:

What time does the Cup race at Texas start?

The Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 starts at 3:30 p.m. ET (2:30 p.m. local) at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas.

What TV channel is the Cup race at Texas on?

Fox Sports 1 (FS1) is broadcasting the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 and has a pre-race show beginning at 2 p.m. ET (1 p.m. local).

Will there be a live stream of the Cup race at Texas?

The Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 can be live streamed on the  FoxSports website  and on the FoxSports app.

How many laps is the Cup race at Texas?

The Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 is 267 laps around the 1.5-mile track for a total of 400 miles. The race will feature three segments (laps per stage) — Stage 1: 80 laps; Stage 2: 85 laps; Stage 3: 102 laps.

Who won the most recent race at Texas?

William Byron led the final six laps, taking the lead on restart on lap 262, and pulled away from Ross Chastain by 1.863 seconds in the playoff race on Sept. 24, 2023 for his first career win in Fort Worth.

A Guide to Plus-Size Traveling, With Tips From 2 Experts

E veryone deserves to explore the world, regardless of size. Yet many plus-size travelers struggle to find inclusive and comfortable options while vacationing.

Whether it's cramped airplane seats , travel excursions that don't account for diverse body types, or hotel rooms that lack the necessary accommodations, traveling while plus size does not come without its challenges. With the right preparation and research, however, traveling does not have to be an anxiety-inducing experience simply because of the size of your body.

Below, PS spoke with two plus-size travel experts to help all vacationers feel more confident traveling. With their first-hand experience and guidance, you'll be ready to take on your next vacation with ease.

The Best Travel Tips for Plus-Size Travelers

The first thing you should do before booking a vacation anywhere is research. "Investing time in research helps you feel prepared, save money, and minimize potential challenges for a more enjoyable journey," plus-size travel expert and content creator Jae'lynn Chaney says. Prior to your trip, she recommends looking into the location you want to travel to, the airline, the hotel, and any activities you may be interested in. To make things more comprehensive, here are some key components to consider for every part of your trip.

When Deciding on Location

Unfortunately, not all destinations are plus-size friendly, Chaney says. "Many destinations feature uneven terrain, steep hills, or unpaved paths, which can pose challenges for plus-size individuals - especially those with mobility issues," she adds. Some places with older infrastructure may also lack modern accessibility features like ramps or elevators.

For this reason, Chaney recommends "researching how easy it is to get around the destination, including public transportation, sidewalks, and attractions." You can also watch videos on TikTok or Instagram to get a "good idea of what to expect," Kirsty Leanne, the owner of the Plus Size Travel Too travel blog, recommends. "It's the most accurate way to see things in advance."

That said, don't let your size stop you from traveling to any location, even if it's not the most accommodating. It's your vacation, and you can tailor your itinerary by staying in a hotel that accommodates your size or picking activities that match your mobility level. In Leanne's experience, she notes, "a lot of places I didn't think would be plus size friendly actually ended up surprising me."

Chaney says the most travel-friendly places in her experience have been Las Vegas; Maui, Hawaii; Toronto; and Barcelona, Spain. "These destinations are just a few examples of places that are known for their plus-size travel friendliness, offering inclusive amenities, accessible facilities, and a welcoming atmosphere for travelers of all sizes," she adds.

Leanne, meanwhile, enjoyed Mexico. "Everyone was so friendly and welcoming," she says, "and I didn't feel like my size was ever an issue."

When Packing

There are a few key items Chaney recommends to always pack for your vacations:

Compression socks , to prevent swelling and deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

Epsom salt , which helps with pain relief and swelling

An anti-chafe remedy , like petroleum jelly or Megababe . Biker shorts also work!

Supportive shoes for walking

A seat cushion for extra support on your flight or drive

When Booking Your Stay

Inquire about room dimensions and bed-weight limits when choosing where you'll stay, Chaney says. You can call the hotel directly or look this up on the hotel's website. Also, if mobility is an issue for you, opt for a hotel, Airbnb, or other accommodation that either has a working elevator or sits on the ground floor.

If you have any concerns about booking a hotel room, advocate for yourself. "Communicate your needs and preferences to the hotel," Chaney says. Depending on what the request is, they may be able to help you.

When Flying

When booking a flight, Chaney recommends looking for airlines that offer a "customer of size" policy, like Southwest. The airline allows customers who "encroach upon any part of the neighboring seat(s)" to "proactively purchase the needed number of seats prior to travel to ensure the additional seat(s) is available." Per the Southwest policy, you can either pay for both seats upfront, and then, following the flight, contact the airline for a refund for one seat, or you can discuss your seating needs with the customer service agent at the departure gate. Just note that if the flight is full, a customer service agent may not be able to accommodate your request.

If you're looking to book outside Southwest, look into airlines with seat upgrades that offer more leg room, like premium economy seats or business class, Chaney says. If you don't want to spend additional money, however, Chaney recommends sitting in an aisle seat. Whatever you decide, most airlines will have their seat dimensions listed on their website if it's helpful to know what the space will look like before entering the flight.

Once on the flight, if you think you may need a seatbelt extender, ask the flight attendant immediately upon boarding the plane. "Asking when you board is easier, as they'll either hand it to you there and then, or bring it to you in your seat," Leanne says. Do not bring your own seat belt extender though, as it may not be FAA-approved.

Lastly, if booking a long flight, Chaney recommends choosing a flight option with layovers. If you're a plus-size traveler who can't fit comfortably in the plane lavatory, this allows you to have bathroom breaks when you need it.

When Driving

If you're renting a car, pick larger-sized vehicles since these "accommodate plus-size travelers better," Chaney says. Unlike when flying, you can purchase and bring your own universal seat belt extender if you want some additional comfiness while in the car. This seat belt extender on Amazon is easily adjustable and extends 14 inches.

If you're driving to your destination and using your own car, take as many breaks as you need during the trip to stretch and move your body.

When Planning Your Itinerary

Whether you want to do an activity like scuba diving, horseback riding, or getting a massage, look for activities that are suitable for people of all body types and abilities. "Find tours, attractions, and experiences that prioritize inclusivity and provide comfortable seating or equipment for everyone," Chaney says. She also recommends you "check the weight limits on activities and excursions beforehand to ensure a smooth experience."

If sightseeing is more your thing, understand your limitations and mobility restrictions. "While some individuals may be able to navigate challenging terrain or historic sites with ease, others may face greater difficulties due to their size or mobility challenges," Chaney says. For this reason, do some research on the sightseeing destination to know how far you would need to walk, how many steps there are, and what people's general review of the experience is.

When eating out, it's never a bad idea to call the restaurant beforehand to ask about their chairs. Prioritize restaurants that have booth options or chairs with no arms on them. (And if you decide to grab a bite to eat with no notice, don't be afraid to specifically ask the staff for a booth or chair with no arms.)

"By researching accessibility options, accommodation features, and activity suitability beforehand, individuals can make informed decisions about where to travel and how to plan their trips effectively," Chaney says.

Additional Resources

While it's normal to feel anxious or stressed planning for a trip, focus on how much fun you'll have discovering a new destination instead of thinking about the potential challenges, Chaney says. And if you're ever uncomfortable, don't be afraid to speak up for yourself. "For me, it's all about advocating for yourself. Whether that's asking for a more comfortable seat in a restaurant or asking for a different seat on a flight, the more you start advocating for yourself the easier travel will be," says Leanne.

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Russ , I see you are quite near San Francisco - you can start by looking at the VISA procedure , it's fairly straightforward . Since there is a consulate in San Francisco - look here http://www.consulrussia.org/eng/visa-sub1.html

And here - http://ils-usa.com/main.php

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. It breaks down the alphabet into letters that are the same as English, letters that look the same but are pronounced differently, etc. It's out of print, but you can get used copies on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Russian-Script/dp/0071419861/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459701143&sr=8-2&keywords=teach+yourself+russian+script

Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

Thanks for all the good advice. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.

One of history's seminal works pertaining to Russian history and culture and a MUST for anyone contemplating a visit or simply interested , is this fine work from 1980 - http://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-The-Beauty-Russia/dp/096441841X

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Here is our visit: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/an-easy-trip-to-the-catherine-palace/ There are also snapshots of the Church on Spilled Blood in this photo journal. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place. This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. Whatever you do, I'm sure that you will love St Petersburg! Ashley

I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!

Mookie Betts continues his torrid start to lead Dodgers past the Nationals

Mookie Betts reacts after driving in a run with a double during the second inning.

There was a lull in early April, when he went two games without a hit and seven games without a run batted in, but other than that, Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts has been on an opening-month rampage, one that continued with a career-high-tying five hits in Tuesday night’s 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals.

A sellout crowd of 52,718 in Dodger Stadium saw Betts hit two doubles, three singles, score twice and drive in two runs to provide a jolt to a team that had lost four of five games. Betts now is batting .388 with a 1.190 on-base-plus-slugging percentage, six homers, five doubles, 18 RBIs and 22 runs in 20 games,

“He’s pretty locked in right now–it’s fun to watch,” third baseman Max Muncy said. “He’s so locked in to what he’s trying to do with his defense that I feel like that’s carrying over to his offense. He’s fully in tune with what his body’s doing right now, and I feel that’s allowing him to get the most out of what he’s trying to do on both sides of the ball.”

Betts is a six-time Gold Glove Award-winning right fielder who was moved to second base over the winter and then to shortstop–a position he hadn’t played regularly since high school–in early March.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pounder is determined to mold himself into a Gold Glove-caliber shortstop, so he goes through grueling pregame workouts every day, taking dozens of ground balls–to his left, to his right, directly at him with pace, slow rollers he has to charge–throwing to first base and working on double-play feeds and pivots.

Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Carl Erskine holds the ball and looks across the field.

And his offense has not suffered one bit.

“I’ve never seen anyone work as hard as he works before a game,” manager Dave Roberts said. “I don’t know how he does it. You would think that he expends too much energy, but he’s just so mentally tough that he can handle it. He’s not a very physical guy, but it certainly hasn’t affected performance.”

Does Betts worry that, over the course of a six-month, 162-game season, he might work so hard before games that his tank is not full for the games?

“Yeah, I’m sure it’s a balance, but I can’t not put in the work,” Betts said. “That’s me. I’m always going to put in work. I’ll overwork before I take a day off. I just gotta figure it out.”

Betts singled to right field to open the first inning Tuesday night and eventually scored on Teoscar Hernández ’s double-play grounder.

He followed a single by center fielder Andy Pages , who was called up from triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday and smacked the first big-league pitch he saw into right field, and an RBI single by Austin Barnes with an RBI double to left-center for a 3-0 lead in the second.

Kiké Hernández ’s 431-foot solo homer to center gave the Dodgers a 4-2 lead in the fifth. Betts doubled to right-center and scored on Teoscar Hernández’s RBI infield single for a 5-2 lead in the seventh, and his RBI single to right made it 6-2 in the eighth.

“I think the thing that stands out most is his plate discipline,” Roberts said of Betts. “He’s just not chasing. He really is controlling the strike zone. Even to be able to get a hit the other way, he’s using the big part of the field.”

The score would have been more lopsided if the Dodgers’ $700-million man had delivered in the clutch.

Three times, Shohei Ohtani stepped to the plate with runners in scoring position, and three times the slugger swung at the first pitch, producing a 108-mph groundout to second base in the second, a routine grounder to second in the fourth and a fly ball to center field in the seventh.

Ohtani is now one for 19 (.053) with runners in scoring position this season, paltry numbers for a guy who entered Tuesday with a .289 career average, a .618 slugging percentage, 1.036 OPS and 45 homers with runners in scoring position.

“Shohei is obviously a very aggressive hitter, but he can do a better job of getting into a count,” Roberts said. “Right now, he’s been super aggressive, more than he’s ever been with runners in scoring position. So we’ve got to temper that back, make these guys continue to make pitches. We’ll address that.”

The Nationals cut the lead to 3-2 in the third when Jacob Young singled and stole second and Jesse Winker crushed a 73-mph curve from left-hander Ryan Yarbrough 429 feet into the right-center field seats for a two-run homer.

But Yarbrough, pitching in a bulk role after Kyle Hurt opened the game with two scoreless innings, shook off the homer and retired 12 straight batters from the fourth through seventh innings.

“The biggest difference was getting ahead, keeping them off-balance and getting quick outs,” Yarbrough said. “With Young and Winker, I was falling behind.”

The promotion of Pages, the 23-year-old Cuban native who had season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder just three weeks into 2023–an injury suffered on a swing in his first triple-A game–headlined a flurry of pregame moves on Tuesday.

‘Pleasant surprise.’ How Andy Pages overcame serious shoulder injury to make Dodgers debut

Andy Pages had a blistering start to the year in triple-A Oklahoma City that saw the 23-year-old bat .371 with five home runs and 15 RBIs in 15 games.

The Dodgers also recalled Hurt and right-handed reliever Eduardo Salazar and optioned right-hander Ricky Vanasco and left-hander Nick Ramirez, who each threw two perfect innings of relief Monday night.

Outfielder Taylor Trammell was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for Salazar. Top pitching prospect Landon Knack will be called up from triple-A to start Wednesday’s series finale against the Nationals.

With outfielder Jason Heyward’s recovery from a lower-back injury going much slower than expected and utility man Chris Taylor mired in a brutal 1-for-33 season-opening slump, manager Dave Roberts said Pages would start against Nationals right-hander Jake Irvin Wednesday and get a considerable “runway” to play over the next few weeks.

“I’ll try to get him in as much as I can to see what we have,” Roberts said of Pages, who hit .371 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 15 games for Oklahoma City this season. “He’s a complete player. A very heady player. He lives and breathes baseball. Very good defender. He’s got plus power.

“And coming back from this really traumatic surgery he had last year, he’s been nothing but fantastic since spring training. We’re really excited.”
