10 amazing czech republic road trip destinations [guide & video].

In this article I feature my top-10 favorite Czech Republic road trip destinations, including distances from Prague, as well as hotel, restaurant and activity suggestions . This post is full of links to help your planning, including a road trip map at the bottom.

I have road tripped all over the Czech Republic (aka Czechia) during several visits. I had a tough time narrowing this list to just ten, so I may sneak in a couple of other nearby destinations not to miss.

This central European country is not very large, as a matter of fact, most of these Czech Republic road trip suggestions are just around a 2 hour drive from the capital city of Prague (with exception to Ostrava, which is the furthest at around 3.5 hours).

The Czech Republic is probably most well known for its opulent castles, classical music (and musical history), crystal glass, and its beer scene. Interesting fact; Czechs consume more beer per capital than any other country in the world.

While the Czech Republic is know for the aforementioned, you’ll also find some remarkable lodging options, world-class restaurants, outstanding hiking and outdoor actives, incredible architecture, fantastic festivals, and, you can even find its cultural heritage alive and well in some of the rural parts of the country.

Road Tripping around the Czech Republic is very easy. Generally speaking the roads are good and easy to navigate. I highly recommend renting a car and exploring this wonderful central European country. If you prefer, you could certainly take a train to most of these destination. By the way, in the larger cities, most people will speak and/or understand English, but not in the rural villages.

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC

Prague is the capital city of Czechia and it’s one of the finest cities in Europe, if not the world. As a matter of fact, the city center of Prague is a UNESCO site, along with 13 other such designations across the country.

Prague is one of the only cities in Europe spared from the devastation of WWII, therefore most of its 11th to 18th century buildings and bridges still remain.

Prague Czech Republic - photo by: Mike Shubic of MikesRoadTrip.com

The city also boasts an abundance of world-class hotels and restaurants. One of my favorites is the Aria—they have an incredible roof-top restaurant and private access to one of the oldest Baroque gardens in the country.

Recommended Hotels:

  • Hotel Augustine is one of the finest hotels in Prague and was developed around a 13th-century church and monastery.
  • Hotel Aria is a symphony of excellence. The hotel is wrapped around a musical theme and home to one of the oldest Baroque gardens in Czechia. Don’t miss the roof-top terrace for a romantic meal overlooking the city. Oh, and they often have live music performances.
  • Two other hotels in great locations within Prague, but a bit more affordable are, Lindner near the Prague Castle. And, the Novotel Hotel , near Wenceslaus Square.
  • For a truly unique experience, there is an incredible one-room hotel atop the Žižkov Tower , although as you can imagine, it’s quite pricey. Recommended Restaurants:

  • The restaurant at the Hotel Augustine offers fantastic fine-dining with both international cuisine along with a few Czech favorites.
  • Coda is the restaurant at the Aria, which is also amazing.
  • Peklo Restaurant is located in a remarkable setting of a 12th-century grotto ( sort of a cave or wine cellar ). Delicious local cuisine and exceptional service.
  • Plevel Restaurant is a good place for vegan food.
  • Oblaca Restaurant atop the Žižkov Tower is not only wonderful, but the view allows you to see all of Prague.

Loučeň and Mcely

Loučeň château in Czechia

Loučeň and Mcely are two neighboring villages with a romantic flare dominated by dueling château’s.

The Loučeň château was originally built as a summer cottage for a Duke, whose disdain for dirty money required his butler to wash and iron his money. His maid’s task was to iron his newspapers in order to remove ink from the pages so that the Duke would not dirty his hands. These are just a couple of the interesting tidbits you’ll learn when touring the castle. The Duke’s eccentric nature didn’t stop with paper products, he was also known as a ladies man bearing 15 children. Rumor was, he was likely related to almost everyone in town.

road trip online cz

The grounds at Château Loučeň are fun to explore, with eleven labyrinths and mazes. The largest maze has towers so that a friend or family member can assist in case someone gets lost. Concerts and other events are often held at the Château. There are also accommodations available, but when I visited in 2015 the room I saw was in need of an update. Soccer (football) fans will be interested to know that the oldest field in the country is on the Château grounds—the first match was played in 1889. There is also a medieval pub on site, which is a great place to grab lunch.

Just a few miles away is Mcely, with its namesake Château perched on a hill overlooking the valley below. Staying at Château Mcely is like being inserted into a dreamy fairy-tale. The grounds are palatial, the accommodations are second to none, and the service is impeccable.

Château Mcely

They have bikes available, which I recommend taking and exploring the village. You’ll likely stumbled upon an apple orchard as they are bountiful. The hotel has a spa with many places around the grounds to relax, including a natural pool with plenty of chaise lounges. There are water fountains, swings, large lawns manicured like a golf course, and a forest to wader through. Piano Nobile is the on-site restaurant which is one of my favorites in the country. They have both an indoor dining room as well as a lovely patio. For couples looking for a romantic get-away, Loučeň and Mcely are a must. I have an epic bucket list of lodging from places I’ve stayed around the world, Château Mcely made the list, along with a couple other Czech Republic hotels. Distance From Prague: 44 miles. 1 hour drive time

BOHEMIAN SWITZERLAND

Bohemian Switzerland is one of the top Czech Republic road trip destinations.

Due north from Prague, along the southern boarder of Germany, is Bohemian Switzerland. Despite its name, this outdoor recreational haven is in fact located in the Czech Republic. The landscape and rock formations are truly unique and may look familiar to some as this was a filming location for Disney’s Chronicles of Narnia movies.

If you want to be one with nature and you enjoy hiking, this is the place for you. If you visit, I highly recommend the folks at Northern Hikes , an environmentally responsible tour operator that will show you some hidden gems, along with some of the highlights within the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. They also offer some unique excursions, like a hike to a spectacular overlook where gourmet coffee and snacks are waiting your arrival.

Recommended Hotel:

  • Lipa Resort in Krásná Lípa – This is more of a series of individual apartments, but a very nice place to stay while in Bohemian Switzerland.

Recommended Restaurants:

  • Restaurace U Forta – After a long hike in the park, this is a wonderful respite.
  • Hotel U Zeleneho Stomu is a cute place with great local food and entertainment.
  • Usedlost Na Stodolci serves some wonderful farm-to-table dishes.
  • Pivovar Falkenštejn is also in Krásná Lípa and has good pub food & beer, as well as some hotel rooms.
  • I just drove through and didn’t have a chance to spend any time in Decin, but it looks like a cool place. If you go, be sure to stop by Karls, I had a great lunch there.
  • If you are a coffee lover like I am, you absolutely have to check out the Bohemian Coffee House .

Distance from Prague: 80 miles. 1:45 hour drive time.

KARLOVY VARY (also known as Carlsbad)

Karlovy Vary is a spa town in the Czech Republic

After some some physical activity and adventure in Bohemian Switzerland, you may be interested in some spa time.

Rising from a forested valley of western Bohemia, Karlovy Vary is known for its healing thermal springs and opulent 19th century architecture. This spa town has impressive colonnades and riverside walkways. There are a number of drinking fountains to sip on the sulfurous waters containing healthy restorative properties.

The Grandiose Architecture of Karlovy Vary is really something to marvel, which is a mix of Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance styles. Just beyond the city limits are slew of trails to explore.

  • Tusculum is a great little bistro.
  • If you like RAW vegan, check out Villa Ritter.

Distance from Prague: 80 mile. 1:50 hours drive.

Loket is one of the best road trip destinations in the Czech Republic

Loket is considered the historical gem of Bohemia. Dominating the town’s panorama is Loket Castle, which was built on a rock near the Ohře river in the 12th century. Strolling the streets feels like walking through a storybook, or a movie set. As a matter of fact, parts of the 2006 James Bond movie, Casino Royale, were filmed here.

Loket is really a day-trip from Karlovy Vary or Mariánské Lázně, which is also a thermal spa town and is really worth a stop as well. I would recommend staying in Karlovy Vary or Mariánské Lázně and then exploring the region from there, including a day trip to Loket.

Distance from Prague: 88 miles. 2 hour drive.

CESKY KRUMLOV

Český Krumlov - Photo by: Mike Shubic of MikesRoadTrip.com

Český Krumlov is an outstanding example of a small, central European, medieval town whose architectural heritage has remained intact thanks to its peaceful evolution over more than five centuries. It’s a place that is easy to fall in love with. The town is situated on the banks of the Vltava river and its fortified castle built with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, is the focal point of town.

No cars are allowed into the city center, so pedestrians can have a field day getting lost within the labyrinth of narrow streets leading to some fascinating discoveries, including museums, art galleries, cute shops and wonderful restaurants. No visit to Cesky Krumlov would be complete without a tour if its castle.

Unique Place to Eat and Drink:

  • Old Hotel Inn is a fantastic place to try a Medieval feast in the unique underground setting ( the hotel/inn however is pretty rudimentar y for lodging ).

Nearby Road Trips:

  • Holašovice – A small village not far from Český Krumlov an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional central European village. It has a large number of outstanding 18th and 19th century vernacular buildings in a style known as ‘South Bohemian folk Baroque’, and preserves a ground plan dating from the Middle Ages.
  • Tábor – You will drive past on your way to Cesky Krumlov or when you leave. This is a lovely place with an outstanding boutique hotel and restaurant called Goldie. I recommend going to Tabor just for the Hotel Nautilus experience alone.
  • Distance from Prague: 108 miles. 2:10 hour drive.

Lednice is in the heart of the wine region in Czechia

The village of Lednice is in the heart of the Czech Republic’s wine-region in South Moravia. It’s famous for the fairy-tale chateau with expansive gardens and green house.

This is one of the most beautiful English Neo-Gothic style Chateau’s in Europe. The Chateau is surrounded by extensive parks and ponds with a number of other impressive nearby structures to explore.

The grounds are absolutely massive, so I recommend taking a carriage ride to give your feet a rest. You may also want to take a boat ride, which will give you a different perspective of the property.

Nearby is the village of Valtice. Inside the 18th century Baroque castle is the Wine Salon, which houses the nation’s 100 best-rated wines. While the Valtice Chateau is one of the most impressive Baroque residences in Central Europe, it’s the Czech Republic Wine Salon that attracts the most attention. If you are a wine-lover, this is an experience you cannot miss. For complete details, click the hyperlink above.

Valtice

Nearby Road Trip:

  • Bořetice – This is a small village of wine makers—if you can find someone to give you a tour, it’s well worth it ( few speak English in these smaller villages ). While in the area, check out Pension André , it’s a lovely winery with a small inn and a wonderful restaurant. Interesting fact about Bořetice: This little village near the Austrian border is a self proclaimed sovereign republic (more of a news’ish playful tourist hook I think). The village is quite small, with just 1000 people, however what was extraordinary to learn is that there are over 260 boutique cellars. Wine clearly runs through the veins of its inhabitants.

Distance from Prague: 158 miles. 2:40 hour drive.

Mikulov is one of the top Czech Republic road trip destinations - photo by: MikesRoadTrip.com

Mikulov is an enchanting village in the midst of a stunning countryside in southern Bohemia, which is surrounded by vineyards in all directions. Mikulov is in the heart of wine country and home to one of the largest wine barrels in the world. The dominating Baroque château in the center of town is the focal point, with lush gardens and many places to take in the varying landscapes and stupendous views.

Just on the outskirt of the main square is a butte translated as the Holy Hill. This is a spot that provides some wonderful views of the dominating Baroque château in the center of town, and peaceful landscapes beyond. There are romantic pathways that meandered down the butte through the town’s vineyards where a historic Jewish cemetery and museum reside. This is one of the oldest and largest Jewish cemeteries in the country and dates to the mid 15th century.

Recommended Restaurant: Marcel Ihnacak Restaurant is exceptional, the lodging however is not so great.

Brno is the 2nd largest city in the Czech Republic

Brno is the Czech Republic’s 2nd largest city, and while it’s lesser known than Prague, it’s nearly as impressive. Brno is also the capital of Moravia, which is the gateway to the fertile vineyards of the surrounding areas.

The historic city center of Brno is quite beautiful and is peppered with historic sights that date back to the 11th century. A large number of the buildings are from the Baroque and Renaissance periods.
Brno is a lively city with lots of festivals, live music, top-notch hotels and restaurants, which are all much more affordable than Prague.

Cobblestone streets lead to public art and remarkable architecture. While the city center is certainly walkable, there is a great public transit system if you get tired.

One of the top modern attractions in town is the Villa Tugendhat museum. Built in 1929 by Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe this is a one-of-a-kind modernist villa built for the Tugendhat family.  It is the only example of modern architecture in the Czech Republic inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. The museum is a wonderful look at early 20th century modern home architecture.

Villa Tugendhat museum - photo by Mike Shubic of MikesRoadTrip.com

What I found so impressive is that the villa and its furnishings are more than 100 years old, yet it looks like it could be today’s era.

One of the highlights are the massive automated windows that open the house up to the outdoors. Interesting Fact: During WWII a bomb landed nearby and broke one of the large windows. Apparently is was very difficult to replace due to its design and sheer size.

  • Hotel Grandezza – Located right in the main square, this is a lovely hotel, walking distance to all of old town.
  • Barcelo Brno Palace – Nice hotel in a great location. The rooms are not on par with the rest of the hotel, but the restaurant sure makes up for it.
  • About an hour east of Brno is Olomouc. If you’re in this area, I highly, highly recommend the Theatre Hotel and their Entree Restaurant, both are quite impressive. Worth going out of your way just to stay in this hotel and eat in their restaurant.

Distance from Prague: 128 miles. 2:15 hour drive.

Ostrava

Ostrava is an up-and-coming city embracing its industrial heritage by brilliantly repurposing old steel mills and other industrial sites into hip and eclectic venues. You’ll find fantastic art installations, wonderful music festivals, cultural events, conference centers and museums paying homage to the industrial workers.

One of the best ways to see Ostrava is in a classic car tour . If you visit in the summer months, don’t miss the Colours Music Festival .

Things to do:

  • Go up in the Bolt Tower .
  • Tour the Harenda u Barborky, an old coal mine and museum.
  • Gong (Plynojem) for events/festivals.

Recomended Restaurants:

  • HogoFogo – Best place I ate at in Ostrava.
  • Comedor Mexicano is pretty cool place, but a bit pricey.

Distance from Prague: 231 miles. 3:40 hour drive.

Love this, Mike! Between its palatial chateaus, history, nature hikes, vineyards and film locations, the Czech Republic certainly seems to have a little something for everyone. Your sweeping shots of the architecture, countryside and city scenes had me immediately wanting to add Czechia to my post-pandemic travel list. Love the camera museum, cobblestone streets and public jukebox too. Awesome!

I’m so glad! It really is a wonderful country to explore. Hope you get a chance one day soon. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers, Mike

Going on a road trip through the Czech Republic is an absolute dream! The country is filled with culture, castles, history, colourful houses and some beautiful nature parks. As tourism numbers have been rapidly increasing in the Czech Republic, I thought it’s time to write up the itinerary we followed during our road trip.

When travelling, I think that adding rural places to your trip add just a little bit extra to the experience. It shows you the core of the country and culture, rather than only touristy places!

Czech Republic Road Trip Overview

Here is a quick overview of this Czech Republic itinerary:

Czech Republic road trip

7 Days In The Czech Republic Itinerary

Now, let’s take a look at a more detailed view of this Czech Republic road trip.

Day 1 – Bohemian Switzerland

As we drove to the Czech Republic via Dresden (Germany), we made a quick stop in Saxon Switzerland and Bohemian Switzerland National Park. It’s an active start to this Czech Republic road trip, as these nature parks are perfect for hiking through some of the most beautiful sceneries.

The Czech Republic is mainly known for cities like Prague and Cesky Krumlov, but one of Europe’s most beautiful nature parks is also a must-visit on a road trip like this one. If you’re not exactly following this road trip and want to incorporate Bohemium Switzerland in your own Czech Republic itinerary, this national park is only a 90-minute drive away from Prague.

Because we entered the Czech Republic via Germany, we had our first stop at Saxon Switzerland , the German part of the nature park. Bastei Bridge (pictured below) is located in this part and acts as a perfect introduction to Bohemian Switzerland. Other places to check out in this park include:

  • Pravčická Gate
  • Tisa Rock labyrinth
  • Mariina Skala

Bohemian Switzerland National Park

After our hike, we continued our drive to Harrachov , where we will stay for two nights.

Where to stay in Harrachov?

We stayed in Harrachov for two nights in Pension & Restaurant Krakonoš .

Day 2 – Harrachov

Harrachov is a little Czech town located right next to the border with Poland. Mainly known for its winter sports facilities, Harrachov has many ski slopes and two huge ski jumping slopes. But also in summer, there is enough to do in Harrachov.

We started our day in Harrachov with a hike through its forest. The ski lifts operate in summer, too, but only take hikers and cyclists up to the mountain top once every half hour. From the top, we hiked down through beautiful and quiet nature.

Ski life in summer in Harrachov Czech Republic

We then made our way to Mumlava Falls . This waterfall is located on the edge of the town and can be reached after an easy hike. The hike takes about 30 minutes and when following the “fox path”, takes you through a magical forest.

Please avoid having lunch near the waterfall, as the restaurants aren’t that great.

Mumlava Falls in the czech republic

After two hikes, it was time for a Czech beer.

Harrachov has its own brewery – perfect for a cold pint in a locally made beer glass, since the brewery is located right next to the local glass factory . The factory offers tours every day from 8 AM till 3 PM and last 45 minutes.

Apart from the museum and factory, there is also a Beer Spa next to the brewery. Yes, you read that correctly: BEER. SPA. Bathe in beer. Amazing! I didn’t have the time to try it out myself, but I was very tempted. Maybe during my next visit, I’ll give it a go.

glass factory in harrachov czech republic

Day 3 – Jicin & Český Ráj (Bohemian Paradise)

From Harrachov, we drive to Český Ráj. By car, this takes about an hour.

Make a quick stop at Wallenstein Loggia in Jicin, one of the most significant buildings in Jicin. Once owned by the aristocrat Albrecht von Waldstein, the building now houses a little cafe (Cafe Loggie) and acts as a perfect little stop while driving towards Cesky Raj.

Wallenstein Loggia in jicin czech republic

To get to Český Ráj (also known as Bohemian Paradise), you have to drive through Jicin . Wallenstein Loggia is located in this town, but the town itself is worth a visit too. The beautifully coloured houses on the market and the Valdice Gate give this town such a lovely and fairytale-like vibe.

colourful houses in jicin czech republic

In the afternoon, it’s time to explore Český Ráj . This nature park is known for its crazy rock formations and abandoned castles. You can park your car near the start of many different hiking trails and pick one of the many hikes. There are some for everybody – easy, hard, short, long hikes.

Something to keep in mind is probably what you’d like to see on your hike. After exploring this beautiful nature park, we drove on to Turnov , where we stayed the night in the beautiful Bohemia Inn Hotel . Some of the highlights you should definitely consider while inside Český Ráj include:

  • Prachov Rocks
  • Příhrazy Rocks
  • The Hruboskalske rock town
  • Trosky Castle
  • Valdstejn Castle

Český Ráj nature park in the czech republic

Day 4 – Prague

After the nature parks and the more rural side of the Czech Republic, it’s time to dive into the city of Prague.

There is so much to do in Prague and you could easily spend a week there and not get bored. Unfortunately, when you only have a week to see the best of the Czech Republic, we only spent two days in Prague. But you can see a lot in just two days!

In the morning, we explored the Old Town of Prague. On the famous square in the Old Town (Staromestska namesti) you can find the Astronomical Tower and Clock, the Old Town Hall and the beautiful Gothic Church of our Lady before Tyn.

There are some food stands where you can try an amazing Prague snack (which is actually Romanian) called trdelnik (pictured below). Other things to check out in the Old Town are the Powder Tower , the Charles Bridge and the Jewish Quarter.

prague clock czechia

The afternoon was spent at Prague Castle . From the Old Town, you can walk towards Hanavský pavilion where you’ll have a wonderful view over Prague. You can then continue to walk towards the Castle.

Prague Castle is the largest coherent castle complex in the world and can be visited for free. The Castle was founded around the year 880 and is absolutely stunning.

view of the charles bridge in prague czech republic

Day 5 – Prague

On our second day in Prague, we visited the Charles Bridge early in the morning.

Crossing the Vltava river, this 600-year-old bridge connects Prague’s Old Town with the Lesser Town and is one of the main highlights of Czechia’s capital. The beauty of this bridge is much appreciated by visitors and it gets very crowded during the day. That’s why you should really try to see it before 9 AM or after 7 PM.

charles bridge prague navigatio

At 10 AM, we had a tour of Prague by bike . With a group of 12 and a tour guide, we cycled through the Old Town, some other highlights (like the Lennon Wall ) and a few more hidden places. What I really liked about the tour is that you get so much more information compared to just walking through the city yourself. It really added a lot of value to our visit to Prague!

You can book your own Prague Cycle Tour here.

Lennon Wall in prague

In the afternoon, we took the monorail up Petřín hill . On the top, you can find the Petřín Lookout Tower (also known as Prague’s Eiffel Tower), giving you a lovely view of the city.

Petřín Lookout Tower in Prague

Day 6 – Telč & Znojmo

Even though I wish I could’ve spent more time in Prague , we had to continue to our next stop; Telč.

This UNESCO world heritage site has one of the country’s best-preserved historic squares according to Lonely Planet. The beautifully painted houses definitely stand out and it’s not difficult to see why many guides recommend visiting this town. Completely burned down in the year 1530, the town was built from the ground up just a few years later.

colourful houses in telc czech republic

You can park your car outside the city centre, as there are no cars allowed in the historic square . The village itself is pretty small and doesn’t take very long to explore. But it has a lovely feel to it. It’s one of those places you just have to visit when in the area.

In the evening, we made our way down to Český Krumlov.

Where to stay in Český Krumlov?

Even though you can stay outside the historic town, I would HIGHLY recommend staying inside the centre. Sleeping in one of the old, historic houses is an incredible experience and really adds to your stay. Many tourists leave the city after 5/6 PM, which leaves it open to explore for those who are staying there.

We stayed at Penzion Pod Radnicí and it was absolutely amazing! Right in the middle of the historic centre with a beautiful view of Český Krumlov’s tower. The house that has turned into a hotel must have been at least hundreds of years old!

hotel in cesky krumlov

On the last day of this Czech republic itinerary, we spend some time in Český Krumlov. This historic town is absolutely stunning and turned out to be one of the highlights of this road trip through the Czech Republic. Given UNESCO world heritage status in 1992, this gorgeous little town cannot be missed when visiting Czechia.

view of Cesky Krumlov in the czech republic

This historic city is a blend of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. I have to say that I’m not very knowledgeable about architecture styles, but I do know that Český Krumlov felt like walking through a medieval fairytale setting.

Walking through the cobblestone roads felt amazing, hundreds of thousands of people must have walked those same streets over the last few hundreds of years!

road trip online cz

Spending one day in Český Krumlov is a perfect way to end this lovely little trip. And there are lots of things to do in this little village apart from simply strolling around and enjoying the gorgeous buildings!

  • Cesky Krumlov Castle : Even though the town of Cesky Krumlov isn’t that big, its castle is actually the second largest in the Czech Republic! Walking up the hill towards the castle is an absolute must, as you find the best photography spots there. From there, you can see the entire village. Visiting the castle itself is also possible. There are tours that take you through the beautiful interior of this ancient castle.
  • Castle Tower: Another perfect place for photos, the top of the castle tower. From here, you get a beautiful view across the village. It costs Kč50 to climb the tower, and you can pay a little extra to also visit the museum.
  • Cathedral of St. Vitus : The iconic cathedral of Cesky Krumlov also offers a lovely place to explore (for free!).
  • Kayak from the Vltava River: During the warmer months, it’s possible to kayak or canoe down the river that surrounds Cesky Krumlov!

historic town of cesky krumlov in the Czech republic

As the old historic part of the town is a pedestrian zone, cars aren’t allowed inside. Some cars are able to get a special permit to drive through the town, but between the hours of 10:30 AM and 3 PM, no cars are seen inside the centre.

You can park your car outside the historic town, in car park 1-5. I’d recommend parking on P1, as it’s located closest to the entrance of Český Krumlov’s historic town. Parking can get a little expensive, but many hotels that are located inside the centre offer a discounted parking ticket.

About The Czech Republic (Travel Tips)

Apart from knowing what to do and what to see in the Czech Republic, it’s also useful to know some of the basics of the country. What money do they use, how expensive is it to visit and what are the best times to visit?

Money and Price

The currency in the Czech Republic is the Czech koruna. Currently, the exchange rate sits around: €1 = Kč25 $1 = Kč23 £1 = Kč28

The Czech Republic is not an expensive country, and holidays can be done on a budget. Of course, cities like Prague and Brno are more expensive compared to rural towns. Beer is very cheap in Czechia, you’re able to get 0.3 litres for Kč25. The average meal at a restaurant will cost you around Kč300 and a hotel room for two people varies, but usually sits around Kč2100.

Tipping in restaurants is not necessary, but it’s good etiquette to tip around 10% . For more information about how expensive the Czech Republic is, you can check this budget breakdown from Budget Your Trip .

Czechia is a very cash-based country. Even though there are tons of ATMs in the Czech Republic, not every restaurant, hotel or shop accepts cards. We often stumbled upon places that didn’t accept card and we didn’t realise until after we’d eaten our food… Most places also accept Euros but you have to be careful when paying in Euros as the exchange rate might differ.

When taking out money from an ATM (from a bank account in a foreign currency), you should also be careful and check the exchange rates online. I noticed that restaurants or ATMs sometimes have their own exchange rates, which turn out to be a lot more expensive.

one week road trip in czechia

The official language spoken in the Czech Republic is Czech. Many also speak German and English, especially in the tourism industry, so there’s no need to worry if you do not speak Czech. Some handy phrases to learn before you go include:

  • Thanks = Dekuji
  • Hello = Dobry den
  • Do you speak English? = Mluvíš anglicky?

Best times to visit Czechia

With a continental European climate, the Czech Republic has warm and dry summers (20-27°C) and cold, snowy winters. During the winter, Czechia acts as a lovely place for skiing and other winter sports.

Late spring ( May ) and late summer ( September ) are probably the best times to visit Czechia, as the weather is still nice and mild but you avoid the huge waves of tourists. By avoiding the huge crowds in June-August, you’re usually also able to score some cheaper hotels!

Let’s talk “driving in Czechia” as this is a road trip itinerary. The advantage of using a car to get around the Czech Republic is that you have the freedom to get anywhere you want. Especially rural places are almost impossible to get to when using public transport.

And believe me, you do not want to be stuck on a bus on the swirly country roads! Obviously, you can use your own car to drive through Czechia, or you can rent a car at the airport. Here are a few things to keep in mind while driving in the Czech Republic:

  • Vignette/Toll Sticker: If you’re using your own car to drive through the Czech Republic, you need to purchase a vignette. This is basically paying for road tax as a tourist. These stickers can be bought at petrol stations or at shops located near the border.
  • Zero alcohol tolerance: The Czech Republic is one of the few countries with an absolute zero tolerance for alcohol when driving. You’re not even allowed to drink one before getting behind the wheel. If you do, you risk 3 years in prison…
  • Speed limits: In urban areas, you can drive up to 50 km/h. Outside cities and towns, a 90 km/h limit has been set in place. It can seem a little crazy to drive 90 on some winding roads in rural Czechia, especially if you’re not used to it – so be careful! On the highway, 130 km/h is the limit.

Though many visitors to this Central European nation set their sights only on the capital city of Prague, planning a Czech Republic itinerary that allows you to see a bit more of the country is never a bad idea. Czechia is blessed with countless charming towns and interesting places to visit so planning to spend 7 to 10 days in the Czech Republic is not exactly a difficult task.

Sure, Prague has a lot to offer and is very much worth visiting in its own right, however, you can really get a holistic view of the culture, traditions and diversity of the Czech Republic if you take the time to venture outside of the capital and visit a few more towns and cities.

Whether you’re interested in wandering around historic spa towns, drinking pilsner in its birthplace or exploring medieval castles, the Czech Republic truly has a lot to offer.

How Many Days in the Czech Republic?

If you want to visit more than just Prague, you’re likely going to wonder how many days in the country is going to be enough to do it justice. And while that answer can really depend (there is a lot to see), generally, planning to spend at least 7 days in the Czech Republic can be a good option.

With one week, you can spend an ample amount of time in Prague and make sure you get a good feel for the city while also allowing yourself to see some other towns and cities in the country. You could either opt to go east or west from Prague in a week, but you likely won’t have time to do both.

If you want to get even more out of the country, then consider planning to spend 10 days here. With this amount of time, you get to enjoy both Bohemia and Moravia along with spending enough time exploring Prague.

Getting To & Around the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic, being in the centre of Europe, is well-connected to the rest of the continent and further afield. If you’re planning a Czech Republic itinerary, the most logical starting point is the capital city of Prague and, unsurprisingly, this also has the most transport links in the country.

Prague is home to its own international airport, connecting it to countless destinations across Europe and the world. The city is also well-connected by rail and bus to neighbouring countries.

The Czech Republic also has international airports in Brno, Ostrava and Pardubice but these are a lot less trafficked and you likely won’t find as many flights from as many destinations as Prague. Most major cities in the Czech Republic are also going to be easily reached by both bus and train from neighbouring countries. You can view schedules here.

Once in the Czech Republic, the itinerary listed below can easily be done while relying on public transport. Both the bus and train networks in the country are reliable and everywhere listed here is well connected.

If you want more flexibility and the ability to get a bit more off the beaten path, however, renting a car can be a good idea. Driving in the Czech Republic is easy and the road quality is fantastic.

If you decide that you want to take a Czech Republic road trip, then we suggest browsing Rentalcars.com to compare prices for rental cars across several companies.

7 to 10-Day Czech Republic Itinerary

Though we do realise that holiday times can be limited, we think that the ideal length of time to spend exploring the Czech Republic is ten days.

This gives you enough time to explore the tourist hotspots (Prague is popular for a reason!) while also getting off the beaten path to really discover the culture of this country.

This itinerary sees you beginning and ending in the capital, making it easy to do either as a stand-alone trip or as part of a longer Central European adventure.

Day 1: Prague

Begin your trip to the Czech Republic in the capital city of Prague. This city is popular with tourists for good reason – it’s absolutely beautiful and packed with interesting things to see and do.

To get the most out of this city, plan to spend at least 3 days in Prague to get beyond the tourist crowds and venture a bit off the beaten path.

Spend your first day exploring tourist highlights like the Charles Bridge, the Prague Castle and the Mala Strana neighbourhood. There is a lot to take in in these areas and you’re sure to enjoy yourself.  If you want to learn more about the city, consider  taking a walking tour  with a guide.

Where to Stay in Prague

Miss Sophie’s Downtown – This boutique hotel is a great choice for those who want to stay in the city centre of Prague. They have several great rooms available, a fantastic, central location, and great amenities to ensure your trip to Prague is a great one.

Grand Hotel Bohemia – For those who would like a luxury option in Prague, this plush hotel is a fantastic choice. As one of the best-rated hotels in the city, they have a range of plush rooms on offer and an excellent location for exploring Prague. Day 2: Prague

On your second day in Prague, take this time to explore the Old Town even deeper and take in some more of the city’s highlights. Today is also a great opportunity to head to a museum or two.

Enjoy wandering around the Old Town Square, visit the Astronomical Clock, visit the Jewish Quarter, head to Wenceslas Square and learn about the history of Czechia at the National Museum.

End your day on the other side of the river, taking in the views of the city from Letna Park – which is also home to one of the best beer gardens in the city (and has spectacular views of Prague, as well!).

Day 3: Prague

The third day of your Czech Republic itinerary is also spent in Prague and this is a day where you can really step off the beaten tourist trail and explore some neighbourhoods that not everyone gets to in the city.

You can start your day wandering around Vysehrad castle before catching a tram to the leafy Vinohrady neighbourhood.

Spend a bit of time exploring this gorgeous area and admiring the architecture before venturing into trendy Zizkov. This neighbourhood is packed with cool cafes and restaurants and is also home to Vitkov Hill, which provides an excellent vantage point over the city.

You can also choose to use the day to take a day trip to popular spots such as Kutna Hora or picturesque Bohemian Paradise.

View of Zizkov from Vitkov Hill

Day 4: Karlovy Vary

On day four, it’s time to leave Prague and head west to the historic spa city of Karlovy Vary . Though you could visit this city as a day trip from the Czech capital, you do have a lot more flexibility if you spend the night here.

The best way to reach Karlovy Vary is by bus, as it takes a little bit under two hours from Prague. There are trains, but they take about an hour longer.

Once in the city, take the time to wander around, enjoy the gorgeous Art Nouveau architecture and stroll through the mineral water colonnades. It’s believed that the sulphuric waters here can heal all that ails you, so you can try to take a drink from one of the many taps in the city.

There are also a few easy hikes you can do to get wonderful views of Karlovy Vary from above and plenty of beautiful parks to chill out and relax in.

Where to Stay in Karlovy Vary

Imperial Hotel – As one of the most iconic historic hotels in Karlovy Vary, this is an excellent option if you’re looking for a luxury stay in this Czech city. Situated on a hill overlooking the city and has numerous amenities to ensure you have a luxe and relaxing stay. There is also an on-site cafe and spa offering numerous treatments.

Boutique Hotel Corso – This hotel is another great option in Karlovy Vary. They have a great, central location, numerous plush rooms available, a spa and wellness centre and even a restaurant and swimming pool on the premises.

Revelton Studios – For those who’d like to have an apartment or studio in Karlovy Vary, this place is an excellent option. Centrally located, there are plenty of fully furnished studios to choose from, each with an equipped kitchen and comfortable amenities.

Beautiful Karlovy Vary

Day 5: Pilsen

From Karlovy Vary, it’s time to head a bit south to another iconic city in the Czech Republic – Pilsen. Known primarily for being the home to the world-famous Pilsner Urquell beer, the main draw of this city unsurprisingly is the brewery. But other things make Pilsen worth visiting, as well.

Pilsen is home to a charming city centre that is worth exploring. It is also home to one of Europe’s largest synagogues and is steeped in Jewish history.

Another interesting thing to explore is the Underground Pilsen Museum, which will take you on a tour of the subterranean tunnels of the city.

Where to Stay in Pilsen

Hotel Rango – This hip hotel is located only 20 metres from Pilsen’s main square so it makes for the perfect base for exploring this Czech city. Set in a historic building, they have a range of modern rooms on offer and an on-site restaurant and bar to enjoy.

Wellness Hotel Republika 24 Apartments – If you want to have your own self-catering space in Pilsen, then these apartments are an excellent choice. Centrally located, there are plenty of apartments to choose from — all ranging in size and some even equipped with a sauna!

St. Bartholomew Cathedral in Pilsen

Day 6: Cesky Krumlov

On day 6 it’s time to head to one of the main draws of the country outside of Prague – Cesky Krumlov .

You can reach Cesky Krumlov relatively easily from Pilsen by both bus and train, but keep in mind that you will likely need to switch in Ceske Budejovice.

It will take a few hours to reach Cesky Krumlov from Pilsen no matter which mode of transport you end up using, so plan to spend your first day in the town just wandering around and getting your bearings.

Cesky Krumlov really lends itself to getting lost in, so take the time to really enjoy this aspect of the city.

Where to Stay in Cesky Krumlov

Pension Kristian – If you’re after luxury in Cesky Krumlov, this hotel is a great option. Located just steps from the castle, they have plush rooms on offer and there is also parking available for those who have arrived in this beautiful town by car.

Pension Faber – This hotel is a great option for those visiting Cesky Krumlov on a mid-range budget. They have several rooms available, including a fully-furnished apartment, and a great location in the Old Town.

Luxury Apartments No. 91 – This one-bedroom apartment is a great option for those looking for their own space in Cesky Krumlov. Situated at the base of the castle, it is perfect for exploring all Cesky Krumlov has to offer.

Hostel Postel – Located in the centre of the town, this hostel is an excellent choice for budget and solo travellers. They have a range of private and dorm rooms available along with great common areas that make meeting other travellers a breeze.

Wandering Cesky Krumlov's Streets

Day 7: Cesky Krumlov

If you only have 7 days in the Czech Republic, spend your final day exploring the town before heading back to Prague in the late afternoon.

The reason we say to spend a night or two in this picture-perfect UNESCO town is to make sure you take the time to really explore and take it all in when all the day trippers have gone home.

Cesky Krumlov is home to a massive castle complex, a sprawling and charming old town and plenty of hidden gems and places to take in iconic views. There are lots of things to see and do in this little town and many don’t spend an adequate amount of time to really enjoy it.

Cesky Krumlov Castle

Day 8: Brno

If you’ve planned a 10-day Czech Republic itinerary, this day should be used as a travel day to get from Cesky Krumlov to the country’s second-largest city of Brno.

There are direct buses from Cesky Krumlov to Brno that leave a couple of times per day. The journey takes a bit over six hours, so it will eat up a good portion of your day.

If you do have your own vehicle, you can expect the drive from Cesky Krumlov to Brno to take only about three hours, so you can save a lot of time if you’ve hired a car.

Once in the city, spend your afternoon wandering around and seeing a few of the top sites. Brno is a small city that you can cover in a short time, but this gives you a good opportunity to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.

Find a cosy pub to drink some beer or, better yet, sample some Moravian wine that is grown in the region just outside of the city!

Where to Stay in Brno

Penzion Bird’s Nest – This quaint, quiet and comfortable guesthouse is a great option for mid-range travellers in Brno. Located in a quiet suburb, they have clean and comfortable rooms available and come very highly rated.

Atrium Apartments – If you’re looking for a private apartment in Brno, then these apartments are a great choice. They are pet-friendly, fully equipped and there are a range of sizes to choose from. They are also located in a great place for exploring the Czech Republic’s second-largest city.

Not quite what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Brno hotels!

View of Brno from Old Town Hall

Day 9: Brno

On the ninth day of your trip, spend the majority of your day exploring Brno and seeing what this city has to offer. As the second-largest city in the Czech Republic and the capital of the Moravia region, there is a distinctive cultural difference between Brno and Prague.

Brno boasts a lot of interesting things to see and do and there are markedly fewer tourists here than in the Czech capital. Take your time to explore the Old Town, head to Spilberk Castle and wander through the Ossuary at the Church of St. James.

In the later part of the day, hop on a bus or train and head north to the beautiful city of Olomouc.

It’s easy to reach Olomouc from Brno and the two cities are only about an hour from each other. You can either opt to take the bus, train or drive and you won’t spend too much time in transit.

Day 10: Olomouc

Spend the final day of your trip in the beautiful city of Olomouc . Though Cesky Krumlov often tops lists as the most beautiful town in the country, my personal belief is that Olomouc should get the number one spot. This cool and hip city is home to a major university, so it has a youthful energy with a lot of cool things to do.

Olomouc is also absolutely gorgeous. Packed with beautiful architecture, sprawling main squares, an astronomical clock, lovely winding streets, cool pubs, inviting parks, beautiful churches and much more, Olomouc makes for the perfect end to any trip to the Czech Republic.

This is also still a relatively under-the-radar destination in Czechia and there aren’t too many tourist crowds, so you don’t have to contend with large tour groups and the inflated prices that you may in other, more popular Czech cities.

Where to Stay in Olomouc

Miss Sophie’s Olomouc – This boutique hotel located right in the city centre is one of the best places to stay in Olomouc. It comes very highly rated, they have a range of rooms for single travellers to families alike and there is a buffet breakfast option available.

Long Story Short – This boutique hostel is an excellent option for those travelling solo or on a tight budget. They have both dorm and private rooms available and even have their own adjacent cafe that opens early and closes late.

Not what you’re looking for? Click here to browse more Olomouc hotels!

The beautiful city of Olomouc

Have More Time?

If you have more time and want to spend up to two weeks in the Czech Republic, then consider heading to the country’s third-largest city of Ostrava after exploring Olomouc. Ostrava is a gritty, industrial former mining hub that isn’t a huge tourist hot spot but can be very interesting to explore.

If you want to get out into nature, then you can easily head to the lovely Jeseniky Mountains from Ostrava. There are a lot of things to do in this region and it is a very popular holiday spot for Czechs both in the summer for hiking and in the winter for skiing.

Another option from Prague is to visit Bohemian Switzerland National Park which located close to the border of Germany and is a great place to get lost in nature.

Sunset over the Jeseniky Mountains

Planning a Czech Republic itinerary is a lovely task when you consider just how many beautiful places there are to visit in this Central European nation. If you take the time to explore beyond Prague, you will be rewarded with memories that will last a lifetime.

Dear Maggie,

Fantastic information. I heard Asian tourists are swarming to Cesky Krumlov, I didn’t see you reviewing it, what are your thoughts?

Thanks very much.

Hi Aline, glad you found this helpful! Cesky Krumlov is incredibly popular with tour groups from every nationality, so it can get pretty congested there, especially if you’re visiting in peak season. It’s been a number of years since we’ve been there, so we don’t really have any up-to-date info on it. I do think that most people treat it as a day trip, so if you want to avoid the crowds it might be helpful to spend a night or two there to see it without hordes of tour groups. Hope this helps!

Awesome Czech Republic Road Trip | The Most Diverse 1 Week Itinerary

Explore the rich treasures and diversity of the Czech Republic! This Czech Republic road trip is the perfect way to discover all the breathtaking treasures scattered around this incredible country, all in one week!

Most travelers flood the streets of Prague, which is most definitely worthwhile, but few step outside the grand city to explore the “hidden gems” sprinkled throughout the rest of the country.

The Czech Republic offers visitors the opportunity to tour breweries and appreciate picturesque medieval villages. There are so many inviting UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the form of castles, chateaus, and palaces. The Czech Republic also has stunning Natural Protected Areas.

Try sampling a glass, or two, of the refreshing Moravian Wine and biking through the rolling hillsides of the wine region. Don’t turn your nose up at the chance to sample Olomouc’s stinky cheese, or visit the informative museum! Of course, the Chapel of the Bones in Kutna Hora is always a bizarre and intriguing point of interest.

All of these incredible sights can be discovered on this Czech Republic road trip itinerary. In truth, it’s quite manageable and fun to explore this country by car. So, grab your favorite playlist and rent a car.

Here are some worthwhile stopping points on this picturesque Czech Republic road trip!

This is an overview of this Czech Republic road trip; however, there’s a list of alternative options if this itinerary doesn’t fit your interests.

This Czech Republic Road Trip Itinerary Includes

  • Pilsen to tour the Pilsner Urquell Brewery and enjoy the parks, plazas, and museums
  • Český Krumlov , to wander and enjoy the most beloved medieval Bohemian village in the Czech Republic .
  • Eager sightseers may add the Chateau Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou .

  • Drive to Olomouc to sample the famous “stinky cheese.” The following day, discover lesser-known gems throughout the countryside of the Olomouc Region.
  • Head back to Prague via Kutna Hora to see the unique Sedlec Ossuary (Chapel of the Bones)

This diverse Czech Republic road trip itinerary is for one week, but there are plenty of alternatives and options to extend the journey.

Rent a Car in Prague

First things first, rent a car from Prague. Renting a car in the Czech Republic is easy and affordable. The Prague Airport offers the best daily prices and has plenty of car companies to choose from.

Even during the peak summer months, we were able to rent a car for around $17 a day. Surprisingly, I snagged this price only two days before we departed from Prague.

Renting a Car & Czech Republic Driving Tips

  • Kayak usually always has reasonable car deals.
  • Save money by opting for a credit card which includes rental car insurance.
  • In Europe, it’s cheaper to rent a manual. So, brush up on those rusty stick shift driving abilities!
  • Compact cars use less fuel and are better for the environment!
  • The main roads in the Czech Republic are well-paved and marked. Make sure to have a sim card for driving directions, or download an offline map.
  • Many roads have Vignettes tolls. It is easiest to purchase the toll pass from the rental car agency. It can be done online here, but the process is a little confusing. For convenience, I purchased from the rental agency.

Day 1 Czech Republic Itinerary | Pilsen (Plzeň)

road trip online cz

🚗 Czech Republic Road Trip | Prague – Pilsen | Distance: 91 kilometers (57 miles) | Drive Time: 1 hour

Let’s dive into this Czech Republic road trip by departing Prague and heading to the Czech Republic’s most famous beer city, Pilsen.

Pilsen is known for its trademark style of beer, you’ve guessed it, pilsner. The city attracts beer enthusiasts who wish to explore the country’s leading beer producer, Pilsner Urquell. There are plenty of tours and museums to keep any beer fanatic (or those less inspired by the city’s beverage of choice) thoroughly entertained!

There’s more to do in Pilsen than indulge in a tasty unfiltered and unpasteurized cold beer!

Besides the Pilsner Urquell Brewery, Pilsen boasts an inviting main plaza. The focal point is the impressive Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. There’s the small and interesting Patton Memorial Museum, which focuses on General Patton and the liberation of Pilsen during WWII. The city has beautiful colorful buildings, plenty of green spaces, and a plethora of traditional eateries.

Tips on Visiting Pilsen

Pilsen can be seen in a lazy afternoon and morning. The main sights are easy to navigate on foot, so park your car and plan on walking the main sites. Don’t forget the zero-tolerance laws for those drinking and driving. Many of the accommodations in Pilsen are an easy walk to the Pilsner Urquell Brewery.

Upon arrival, stop by Pilsner Urquell to grab your brewery tickets. There are lots of day trippers passing through, so it’s important to reserve your ticket in advance, especially during the busy high season.

Tour the Pilsner Urquell Brewery

The locals of the Czech Republic love their beer and consume more per capita than any other country in the world! The country’s most famous producer, Pilsner Urquell , is brewed and perfected in Pilsen. The brewery is stunning and worth a tour!

Pilsner Urquell offers a wide range of tours both onsite at the brewery, and offsite at various museums in the city. There’s the Classic Brewery Tour, the smaller Gambrinus Brewery Tour, The Brewery Museum, and the Historical Underground Tour.

Also, the brewery hosts more in-depth “experiences.” With so many options and highlights it can feel overwhelming on which tour, experience, or museum to ultimately choose from.

What to Expect on the Classic Pilsner Urquell Brewery Tour

Classic Pilsner Urquell Brewery Tour, copper kettles, things to do in Pilsen, Pilsner Urquell Brewery, Pilsen day trip, day trips from Prague, Czech Republic itinerary, road trip Czech Republic

The Classic Pilsner Urquell Brewery Tour is a great and comprehensive tour option. This tour option is a practical choice, as it runs daily and in multiple languages and starts right from the main visitor center at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. An informative guide walks you through this interactive experience.

Classic Tour at Pilsner Urquell Brewery | Standard Entrance Ticket: 380 CZK ($16 USD) | Tour Duration: Under 2 hours | Tours run frequently in Czech, English, and German | Check tour times here

First, get a brief history of how the brewery came to be. Next, hop on over to the bottling facilities. From there, it’s onto the brewhouses to learn about how the beer is made. Sample the malts and barleys and watch a fun video about the brewing process next to beautiful copper tanks.

Finally, head underground and walk through a small section of the cold ice cellars. The climax is walking past the smallbatch brewery. Find a man pouring the perfect glass of Pilsner Urquell from a wooden keg. The fresh beer was brewed in the room you just came from. Drink your mug of beer 50 meters below the ground .

The sample room is next to wood barrels in a dimly lit cellar beneath the brewery. This mug of beer is unfiltered and unpasteurized and can only be tasted on this brewery tour!

Pilsner Urquell is a very neat brewery tour that should not be missed!

Where to Eat in Pilsen

Pilsen offers no shortage of great places to score some traditional Czech food and fresh locally sourced beer (Pilsner Urquell) right from the tank.

Na Spilce Restaurant

Na Spilce Restaurant , is housed in the old fermentation cellar on the grounds of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery. This inviting establishment is considered one of the biggest beer halls in the Czech Republic. On draft, find them pouring up Pilsner Urquell and Gambrinus fresh from the tank. This space acts as a beer hall and a restaurant serving up traditional Czech dishes.

U Salzmannů

U Salzmannů is an awesome restaurant located close to the center of Pilsen. Check out the pleasant outdoor beer garden. The delicious traditional food options and Pilsner Urquell straight from the tank do not disappoint.

U Salzmannů doubles as a hotel and prides itself on hosting guests since 1637.

Na Parkanu has delicious food and snacks that pair well with beer. I’m still dreaming about their sausages marinated in black beer. Yum! This pub is next door to The Brewery Museum for Pilsner Urquell. So, enjoy a beer fresh from the tank that is part of the museum! There is a small outdoor seating section, if you are lucky enough to snag a seat.

Non-Beer-Related Things to Do in Pilsen

General Patton Museum, building, things to do in Pilsen, Plzeň, street, sky, Czech Republic itinerary

The Pilsner Urquell Brewery may be the star and main highlights, but there are plenty of other things to do in Pilsen, which don’t involve the city’s beverage of choice.

Republic Square

Republic Square is the main square in Pilsen. In this square, is the stunning Gothic Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. Sadly, when we visited it was closed for renovations.

In the summer months, there’s a lively Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings. Many vendors sell and offer samples of artisanal products. Keep an eye out for the milk cart. Locals wait 30 minutes in line to grab fresh milk from the tank truck.

Patton Memorial Museum

The Patton Memorial Museum is a small and informative museum that focuses on General Patton and his impact on liberating Pilsen at the end of WWII. The man running this outfit is so enthusiastic about the museum and the small treasures it holds. Find a diverse collection of war memorabilia. There’s a short, but powerful video showcasing the celebration of the liberation.

This powerful museum emphasizes the truth of the liberation and is meant to correct the untruths spread by the communist regime.

This thoughtful monument is to honor all those Americans who helped liberate Pilsen. It’s a nice walk past the gorgeous Synagogue still standing in Pilsen.

The Great Synagogue

As you walk through Pilsen touring all the things to see, you’ll probably pass The Great Synagogue. This impressive Synagogue is the largest in the Czech Republic. Even if the building is closed, the outside is absolutely fantastic.

Where to Sleep in Pilsen

We slept at Pension City which was an excellent accommodation choice in Pilsen close to the city center. There are parking spaces to leave your car, which are included in the nightly fee. Rooms are simple and clean. There’s a generous breakfast every morning served up in the cozy cellar. The staff is helpful and super smiley. Rooms are budget-friendly and feel super homey.

This charming hamlet is super walkable and boasts some leafy trails with vistas of the village castle. Here find the attractive Klokoty Monastery, the Church Tower in Žižka Square r , charming streets, and some great restaurants serving up Czech cuisine.

Don’t miss the underground tour or on a hot summer day a swim at Jordán Lake.

Tabor offers lots of things to see with fewer tourists than some of the Czech Republic’s more popular villages to the south.

As Tabor is quite small, it would be easy to incorporate nearby castles like Castle Zvíkov or leave early in the morning to tour the State Chateau of Hluboká ( Hluboka nad Vltavou ).

On Day 2 of this Czech Republic road trip, head to Český Krumlov, THE ultimate and iconic fairytale village of Southern Bohemia.

One of the best things to do in Český Krumlov is simply to enjoy it. Climb up to the hilltop castle and walk through the lovely free gardens. Get lost on the twisting cobblestone streets and seek out the plethora of incredible viewpoints throughout the city. The Historic Center of Český Krumlov is a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

Follow along the Vlata River, which winds through the picture-perfect Old Town. A visit to Český Krumlov is all about savoring its beauty.

Sadly, Český Krumlov has fallen victim to its own allurement and beauty. Day trippers from Prague flood the small hamlet in the mornings and afternoons, resulting in the lovely streets feeling crowded and unpleasant. This village is starting to see the sad effects of “over-tourism.”

The best time to appreciate the magic of this village is during the early morning and evening hours. During these times, it returns to a sleepy village, and the locals reemerge.

On our Czech Republic road trip, we had originally penciled in two nights to sleep in Český Krumlov , but we found one night was sufficient. It truly is a special and charming village, but we decided our time could be utilized more appropriately away from the crowds.

Český Krumlov Highlights

Here are some highlights and things to do in Český Krumlov.

The Main Castle of Český Krumlov

Cesky Krumlov Castle Tower, sky, hillside, bell tower, things to see in Cesky Krumlov

It’s hard to miss the beautiful castle towering over the village of Český Krumlov. It’s a steep climb up, but the views at the top are so worth it! It is free to walk through the grounds, but the Český Krumlov C astle does have plenty of options for guided tours and add-ons , like climbing the bell tower.

Don’t miss the many viewpoints along the route and walk across the Cloak Bridge that looms above the village.

After the lunch hour, the crowds seemed to dissipate and the castle became a little more manageable.

Visit the Free Castle Gardens

The Castle Gardens are free and are worth a quick stroll. The gardens offer nice vistas of the castle and are oftentimes found empty and rarely frequented by visitors. The are lots of benches to relax, fountains, and some places to grab a snack and beverage.

During the summer months, the gardens are open daily from 7:00- 19:00.

Get Lost on the Charming Streets of Old Town

One of the best things to do in Český Krumlov is to simply stroll through the charming streets of Old Town. Each street offers unique treasures from little churches to inviting plazas. Follow the Vlatava River and cross the small scenic bridges to appreciate some of the best views of this fairytale village.

Seek the Best Viewpoints

Yes, some of the best viewpoints are from the magnificent hilltop castle, but the city is full of surprises. One of the best viewpoints in Český Krumlov is found at Seminární Zahrada (Seminar Garden) .

Where to Eat in Český Krumlov

Eating in Český Krumlov is hit and miss. Unfortunately, many of the restaurants are extremely overpriced and the quality of food is quite low. Below, is one place in town that I can honestly recommend.

Papa’s Living Restaurant

Papa’s Living Restaurant offers a beautiful terrace located right next to the river. The restaurant is surprisingly modern on the inside. This makes a great lunch spot to enjoy homemade pasta. The drink prices are high, but worth it when enjoyed with the accompanying view.

The service was friendly and fast. To snag a spot on the lovely outdoor terrace, try to arrive after the hectic lunch rush.

Where to Sleep in Česky Krumlov

Ubytování Na Hřišti is the perfect place to sleep outside the city next to the soccer field, but still be within walking distance of the center. This little gem has large basic rooms with a private bathroom. There are free parking spaces right out front! The best part? It’s less than a 10-minute walk to the charming old town of Český Krumlov.

Local Tip | There is a bar next to the reception in this accommodation. I think it’s worth a visit, even if you are not sleeping at this location. The bar is filled with locals drinking cheap beer for $1. The cozy bar is run by the parents of the proprietor. You won’t find many English speakers here, but friendly locals clinking glass and singing “Na zdraví.”

Telč, road trip Czech Republic, colorful buildings, fountain, statue, square, cloudy sky, Telc Square, Hradec Square, UNESCO World Heritage Site in Czech Republic

Day 3 of this Czech Republic road trip is all about the journey as you will spend the majority of the day in the car. Along today’s route, there are many worthwhile pit stops in Telč and Třebíč to get out and stretch your legs. However, you may opt to sleep in Třebíč .

Bonus, there’s an option to take a detour at the Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou Chateau.

For us, the final destination is the adorable village of Mikulov.

🚗 Český Krumlov – Telč | Distance: 120 kilometers (75 miles) | Drive Time: 2 hours with morning traffic in Český Krumlov

Depart Český Krumlov early and head towards the tiny village of Telč. This is the perfect pit stop to take a break and stretch your legs with a walk to the center of the town.

Telč’s picturesque town square, which is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site is colorful and is lined with bright buildings. Hradec Square is wide and large with a nice garden. Along the plaza, find lots of little shops and restaurants.

Start to notice minor changes, as you are just leaving the Bohemia region and beginning to enter into the Moravian region of the Czech Republic. Telč’s town square looks like it was stolen out of a page of a colorful fairytale book.

Parking Tip | Parking in the center of Telč can be tricky and expensive. There are many small paid parking lots on the outskirts of town. Most parking lots are less than a five-minute walk to the main square. The official website for parking information in Telč .

🚗 Telč – Třebíč | Distance: 35 kilometers (22 miles) | Drive Time: 35 minutes

After exploring Telč, head towards the amazing village of Třebíč. There are so many worthwhile attractions to see in Třebíč.

Although small, the town boasts two unique UNESCO World Heritage Sites the Jewish Quarter and St Procopius’ Basilica . There are wonderful information boards scattered throughout the city, making it easy to independently tour the main Třebíč attractions.

Tips on Visiting Třebíč

Although small, Třebíč has a wide range of things to see and do. We only spent a few hours here, but with so much to see, I would have spent more time here. Maybe even spent the night.

On Sundays , many of the shops in the Jewish Quarter are closed. Keep this in mind when planning your Czech Republic road trip.

Parking Tip | There is a huge parking lot next to Centrum Potravin Kučera , a central grocery store. On Sunday, everything is closed, so we didn’t have to pay for parking here. However, it is a great place to park to explore the surrounding area. There is a meter for paying during the week. The parking lot was super convenient to enter and exit from Třebíč.

Self-Guided Tour of Třebíč

First, start at the St. Procopius Basilica. Next, head to the somber Jewish Cemetery. End the tour at the well-preserved Jewish Quarter. This is a perfect example of a city where Christians and Jews lived together in harmony for many centuries, and one of the main reasons the city was listed as a UNESCO site.

St. Procopius Basilica Třebíč

Walk to the towering St. Procopius Basilica and be rewarded with an amazing viewpoint of the city. There was a small door to the basilica open and we were able to take a peek at the stunning interior.

The only way to visit the interior of the Basilica is as part of a guided tour. Check up-to-date tour information here .

After walking around the grounds, follow the well-marked signs and continue to the Jewish Cemetery.

Třebíč Jewish Cemetery

A visit to the Jewish Cemetery in Třebíč is an emotional walk through time. It is one of the largest and best-preserved Jewish Cemetery in the entire Czech Republic. Some of the headstones were crumbling and the grass seemed to be claiming them back to the Earth.

Many graves were from the time of World War II, and it’s hard not to be moved as you walk through this memorable space.

After a somber stroll through the cemetery, head downhill to the Old Jewish Quarter.

Old Jewish Quarter in Třebíč

Třebíč, road trip Czech Republic, colorful buildings, river, Jewish Quarter, trees, stones, clouds, sky, Czech Republic road trip itinerary, things to see in Trebic, Czech Republic highlights

Follow along the two main streets winding through one of Europe’s best-preserved Jewish Quarters. Walk the streets in silence to appreciate and contemplate this space. Stroll past the Old Synagogue. Here, an old woman smiled at me and welcomed me in. This truly is a significant place.

There are lots of hidden tunnels and small streets with little nooks and crannies. Look for the memorial for Antonín Kalina , who helped save 900 children from the Buchenwald Concentration Camp. He was originally from Třebíč.

Wander next to the river to get some great views looking back up at the Basilica.

Třebíč is a moving example of how different cultures can live in peace if we all respect each other’s differences and beliefs. A lesson we need now more than ever.

Again, if you plan on visiting each site more in-depth, it’s best to sleep in Třebíč

🚗 Czech Republic Road Trip Bonus Option | Třebíč – Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou Chateau | Distance: 15 kilometers (under 10 miles) | Drive Time: 15 minutes

If you have the time, a worthwhile detour is to the magnificent Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou Chateau . This chateau is often referred to as the “Versailles” of the Czech Republic and is only a few miles from Třebíč.

Due to time constraints, we missed the last guided tour. However, the lighting was phenomenal for photos. The grand gardens are at least worth a lazy stroll. Take advantage of the free and clean bathrooms located inside.

This is a stunning little pit stop to add to your diverse Czech Republic itinerary.

We continued to Mikulov, a truly enchanting village in the Moravian Wine Region.

If you stopped at the Chateau, Mikulov is only an hour away. If you skip the chateau, Mikulov is about an hour and a half from Třebíč.

Day 4 Czech Republic Itinerary | Mikulov Wine Region

Mikulov, road trip Czech Republic, main square, buildings, church, statue, benches, clouds, sky, brick road, South Moravian wine region, things to do in Czech Republic wine region, Czech Republic itinerary

Welcome to the incredible South Moravian Wine Region! Mikulov is the perfect gateway to explore this stunning region.

We opted to sleep in Mikulov for two nights to explore the cute region in the morning by bike.

Mikulov is perfectly nestled in the Southern Moravian Wine Region and is surrounded by the UNESCO-protected area of the Pálava Hills. This region is blessed with dazzling nature, and as a result, has tons of biking and hiking trails through vineyards, lakes, and meadows.

From Mikulov, it’s only a few miles to Austria. This area feels like a different part of the Czech Republic. There is so much to see in Mikulov, and the best news is, that it’s extremely pedestrian-friendly.

Tips on Visiting Mikulov

We arrived in Mikulov on a Monday and it seemed a little “shut down” to the public. Our hostess at our guest house informed us that it’s possible to just walk and knock on the doors of the vineyards in the city limits, but with the language barrier, we didn’t have any luck with this.

My dad and I befriended some native Czech speakers who told us they had no luck with this method either. Mikulov is more “hopping” during the harvest season, or on weekends not during harvest time.

Mikulov is magical and should not be skipped on any Czech Republic road trip itinerary.

What to See in Mikulov’s Old Town

Mikulov boasts a beautiful centrally located chateau, excellent eateries serving up local wine, some incredible viewpoints, and is surrounded by lush vineyards.

Mikulov Chateau

This glorious Mikulov Chateau is the focal point of the village. There are a lot of exhibits to see here, including the wine cellar and its giant barrel. The peaceful grounds are well-maintained and free to explore.

Goat Hill, Next to Kozí Hrádek or “Goat Tower”

Goat Hill provides one of the best viewpoints of the Mikulov Chateau and the adorable hamlet. If the flag is flying on top of the Goat Tower, it indicates that the tower is open. Otherwise, a visit must be arranged by phone.

Even without the climb up the tower, Goat Hill offers spectacular views of Mikulov. Follow the path into town to walk past many small vineyards scattered along the hillside.

Holy Hill also boasts some amazing viewpoints of Mikulov from a different perspective. The white Saint Sebastian’s Chapel is connected to the Camino de Santiago . Walk along the well-marked trail with the familiar blue and yellow shell of the “The Way.” This route is part of the Moravian-Silesian Way.

It’s possible to enjoy a morning walk through the surrounding forest and appreciate a moment of solitude.

On the way down, follow “The Way” past the 14 mini chapels that lead into the Old Town Square. The chapel and the bell tower are beautiful and the city views can not be beat!

Where to Eat & Drink in Mikulov

Mikulov is all about that wine! It’s easy to walk into the square to grab a bite or enjoy a local glass of wine due to its condensed city center.

Bistro Drogérka

Bistro Drogérka is one of my favorite places to eat in Mikulov. They offer up traditional food but with a modern twist. For example, try the schnitzel with a curry-flavored breading. Drool over their impressive dessert counter. They serve up a diverse selection of local Czech wines.

Sojka & spol. Restaurant & Koloniál

Sojka & Spol has limited seating outside, but plenty of seating options upstairs in the restaurant. The food is simple but good. Interestingly enough, all their featured wines were from Austria, which is only three miles from Mikulov!

Pod Radnicí

With a convenient outdoor terrace in the main square, Pod Radnicí, makes an excellent option to indulge in a “nightcap.” Find friendly servers that follow a “relaxed last call.” This is the perfect spot to watch the sky turn from pink to black, and then witness the streetlights illuminate the romantic village.

KUK Bistro is a modern little place to grab a cup of coffee and a pastry before taking on the day.

Where to Drink Moravian Wine in Mikuov

Vineyards found along the Mikulov Wine Trail

There are so many places to sample the wine of the South Moravian Region. Here is the complete regional guide of all things to do near Mikulov for wine lovers.

Where to Sleep in Mikulov

We spent two nights at Pension Crhan . We loved the incredible views of the Chateau of Mikulov from the window. It’s on the outskirts of town, but the walk into Mikulov passes by Goat Hill. Find simple and clean rooms with on-site parking options. This is an excellent budget-friendly option with friendly hosts who speak English.

Get a taste of Southern Moravia and its incredible wine region by biking a small section of the Mikulov Wine Trail .

This “off-the-beaten-path trail” in the Czech Republic boasts charming little villages, wineries, rolling vineyards, and a range of diverse UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The whole Mikulov Wine Trail is around 50 miles, but this one-day bike itinerary is the perfect sampling of the region.

This aggressive, nearly 30-mile itinerary, starts in Mikulov. Next, it passes through the small hamlet of Úlvay . After that, arrive at Valtice and visit a wine cellar, or two. Continue onto Lednice and savor the views of its lovely palace. Finally, head back to Mikulov via the small hamlet of Sedlec . If you have time, there are two nice wineries on the outskirts of this village.

This mostly flat, yet epic bike ride passes by wineries, chateaus, and the scenic Pálava Hill countryside. Don’t miss exploring the Mikulov Wine Trail!

Even if you skip the bike ride, many of these places like Lednice and Valtice can be explored with ease by car.

After a jam-packed day, relax at one of the wine bars and stroll the charming streets of Mikulov. These two magical days in Mikulov are a highlight of this Czech Republic road trip.

Day 5 & 6 Czech Republic Itinerary | Olomouc

🚗 Czech Republic Road Trip | Mikulov – Olomouc | Distance: 121 kilometers (75 miles) | Drive Time: 1 hour 20 minutes

Don’t worry, the next destination, Olomouc, comes alive at night. So, there’s no need to depart super early. I suggest squeezing in a morning hike to Holy Hill before departure.

After, head to the “overlooked” city of Olomouc . Due to peak season and crowds, we opted to skip many large cities in the Czech Republic. Olomouc is Czech’s 6th largest city, so we used it as an alternative city destination. We spent two nights sleeping in Olomouc.

In Olomouc, find two lively squares, an astronomical clock (which was sadly under renovation when we visited), a youthful student population, and plenty of great places to eat and drink. The nearby countryside has so many treasures to explore.

In fact, there’s so much to see around Oloumouc, that we spent the second day visiting nearby attractions from Olomouc.

But let’s be honest, what drew us here was the famous “stinky cheese” of Olomouc. So, being from Wisconsin and being self-proclaimed “cheeseheads,” my dad and I went on the ultimate quest to indulge in this culinary delight.

Where to Eat in Olomouc

Most places in the city serve up dishes with their noteworthy stinky cheese. Find it on the menu as olomoucký sýr. Some great traditional restaurants offer this as a side or in the regional beloved, garlic soup. It’s everyone’s favorite date night menu item!

Olomouc offers local cuisine, as well as some delicious worldly cuisine if you need a break from the repetitive Czech cuisine.

In Olomouc, indulge in their stinky cheese. It washes down well with a fresh brew on tap.

Drapal Restaurant

Drapal Restaurant is a terrific eatery for authentic Czech food. This bustling eatery is tastefully decorated with old pictures of the town, giving it a historical ambiance. Pilsner Urquell is on draft and fresh from the tank. The daily lunch menu is cheap and comes in massive portions.

The Olomouc stinky cheese here does not disappoint!

The Kathmandu Nepali Restaurant

As we approach the end of of this Czech Republic road trip, you might be ready for a change of cuisine. Try these two yummy places in Olomouc.

The Kathmandu Nepali Restaurant serves up some delicious and authentic Nepali and Indian food. Don’t miss the locally famous lunch buffet that runs during the week. The food is excellent and is served by an extremely friendly waitstaff.

Where to Drink in Olomouc

Svatováclavský pivovar, Řezané Pivo, beer, cut-beer in the Czech Republic, beer mug, table, menu, Czech Republic itinerary

Sip on some Czech beer in the following breweries of Olomouc. These establishments also serve up traditional Czech cuisine.

Svatováclavský Pivovar

Svatováclavský pivovar is a local small-batch brewery that is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the two main squares. There is a roomy outdoor patio, or opt to sit inside next to the brass tanks. Find really unusual seasonal brews, like strawberry and other unique blends. Try the “Řezané Pivo,” or the layered “cut beer.”

Hostinský Pivovar Moritz

Hostinský Pivovar Moritz is a great microbrewery with a pleasant outdoor patio. It sits along one of the main roads just outside the center of town. It’s a nice place to relax after walking around the town.

Na břehu Rhôny

Na břehu Rhôny is a unique wine shop that focuses on French Wines . Grab a glass, a pencil, and a wine list. Choose and pour your favorite wines from the box. It’s on the honor system, and makes it possible to sample an unlimited quantity of red, white, and rose wines all from France.

They also serve little bites that pair with the wine.

At night, watch as young people pour out onto the steps. A fun, new idea that is revitalizing the concept of boxed wine!

Where to Sleep in Olomouc

Looking for a cheap place to rest your head at night? Ubytovna Marie offers clean, simple rooms right next to the city center. There are also quite a few paid parking options nearby.

Day 6 | Travel Deeper in the Olomouc Region

Olomouc Museum of Cheese, poster, cheese boots, things to do in Olomouc Region, day trips from Olomouc, Czech Republic road trip

The lovely countryside near Olomouc has treasures that are easy to explore with a car.

First, leave Olomouc and head to the small village of Loštice . Right off the town’s main square is the Museum of Olomouc Cheese . This small, yet interactive museum, does an excellent job explaining the origins and significance of this famed culinary favorite of the region.

Afterwards, visit the stunning Bouzov Castle . This castle is a local Czech favorite, as it has been featured in many movies and television shows. The inside of Bouzov Castle is worth a tour.

Bouzov Castle | Find it here: Bouzov 8, 783 25 Bouzov | Basic Castle Admission Ticket:   240 CZK ($10 USD) | Tour Duration:   50 minutes in Czech | Official Website

If time permits, it’s also possible to visit the nearby Javoříčské Caves.

On the way back into Olomouc, stop at the refreshing Pivovar Chomout, a popular microbrewery with the locals. The outdoor patio is a must on a summer evening.

Allot around 6 – 8 hours for this day trip from Olomouc itinerary. There’s still plenty of time to enjoy Olomouc in the evening. There’s also no rush to leave Olomouc the next morning to head back to Prague unless you wish to explore the city of Kutna Hora in depth.

Day 7 | Kutna Hora & Sedlec Ossuary

As this Czech Republic road trip sadly comes to an end, there is one of the most bizarre places to stop. Located near Kutna Hora, The Chapel of the Bones in Sedlec has become an extremely popular and peculiar point of interest.

🚗 Czech Republic Road Trip | Olomouc – Kutna Hora (Sedlec) | Distance: 174 kilometers (108 miles) | Drive Time: 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic

The Sedlec Ossuary is filled with the bones of the deceased. This includes interesting bone pyramids and the “chandelier centerpiece” made completely from human bones. There is a haunting legend of a monk who helped arrange the bone pyramids and was given the gift of sight back once he had finished.

Over 30,000 people are buried here. Their bones are a reminder that we are “equal” before God.

Sedlec Ossuary, Chapel of the Bones, human bones, skulls, bone chandelier, Kunta Hora, road trip Czech Republic, human bone chandelier, chapel of the bones in Czech Republic

I have to say I have visited a few chapels of Bones, and the extent of detail in this one is bizarrely memorable. Don’t miss stopping here, especially before returning the rental car to Prague.

Make sure to purchase your tickets at the ticket stands, as you cannot purchase them actually at the chapel.

The tickets will be listed as “Ossuary” on the ticket boards. Ticket options are available as individual monuments or as a packaged deal. Packages include a combination of the Ossuary, Cathedral, and St. Barbara’s Cathedral . These are more spectacular examples of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Czech Republic.

Parking Tips for Visiting Sedlec Ossuary

Having a car in this city is more of a hassle than a convenience. It is hard to know where you can park, and many people are overcharging in the form of “small private parking lots.” They are charging a ridiculous amount and far from the Sedlec Ossuary.

Prague castle at sunrise from the Charles St. Bridge

If you’re wrapping up this one-week Czech Republic road trip, then you’ll need to head back to Prague. If you want to keep exploring, check out this bonus stop.

🚗 Czech Republic Road Trip | Kutna Hora (Sedlec) – Prague Airport | Distance: 113 kilometers (70 miles) | Drive Time: 1.5 hours, but this all depends on traffic

Lunch Stop in Kutna Hora

Na Pašince is on the way out of Kutna Hora and is only a 5-minute drive from the Ossuary! This is one of my favorite restaurants that we ate at during our whole road trip in the Czech Republic. The prices are extremely reasonable, the food is handmade, and the service is incredibly friendly.

The menu is not in English, but the staff is accommodating and helps translate the menu.

Try the hand-rolled pasta and one of their homemade and delicious desserts. The parking is limited. There are only 5 spots in front of the restaurant, but don’t let that deter you.

From this restaurant, it’s only about an hour and 20 minutes to the Prague Airport , assuming that is where you pick up the car.

Driving in the Czech Republic Kutna Hora to Prague Tips

Avoid Highway 1 at all costs . I was told by the car rental agency and the Tourist Information Centers to avoid this road when heading back into Prague. The alternative routes may have longer miles, but the time will be quicker.

Highway 1 is backed up with trucks and standstill traffic. If you happen to drive past this road, (we did on the way into Olomouc) you will see that the cars DO NOT move. Make sure to always avoid this highway!

🚗 Czech Republic Road Trip | Kutna Hora (Sedlec) – Broumovsko | Distance: 118 kilometers (73 miles) | Drive Time: 1 hour 45 minutes | Park here

If you have longer than 1 week for a Czech Republic road trip and are looking for more nature, head towards the border of Poland. Here, find the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area , also known as CHKO Broumovsko. This area is a tranquil slice of beauty at the corners of the Czech Republic.

There are lots of well-marked hiking trails that pass by some extremely peculiar rock formations. The park highlights sandstone rock formations. Stop at the viewpoint of the Rock Theater and wander past the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. There’s a small beer stand in case you want a beverage after the hike.

This can make for a nice alternative to the busy Bohemian Switzerland National Park.

A good place to stay if visiting Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area is Nachod village or Trutnov City, which is also closer to the popular Krkonoše National Park.

Serious hikers can cross the border in Poland and arrive in the Stołowe Mountains National Park . This park has plenty of mountain huts to sleep in and is less than 2 hours away from the charming city of Wroclaw .

A car is a huge inconvenience in Prague. Besides, the public transportation is affordable, reliable, and convenient. Return the car and enjoy all that this incredible city has to offer on foot.

Try to arrive back in Prague before the sun sets. Finish off this Czech Republic road trip with a memorable sunset . If you haven’t yet, check out some of these cool neighborhoods in Prague. The hip Vinohrday neighborhood is a must with old Royal Vineyards, an Italian grotto, and many worthwhile treasures.

If interested in World War II history, head to the moving Lidice Memorial , or visit the solemn Terezín Memorial .

Final Thoughts 1 Week Czech Republic Road Trip

This Czech Republic road trip is a great mix of the Bohemian and Moravian regions. It includes UNESCO World Heritage Sites, enchanting villages, and stunning nature.

The Czech Republic offers so much more than the city of Prague, and once you get out of the main tourist areas, you can visit regions and places that are extremely “off the beaten path.”

This is a great basic Czech Republic road trip itinerary and is the perfect way to get a well-rounded taste of the Czech Republic. From breweries, medieval villages, picturesque town squares, chateaus, palaces, rolling wine regions, castles, culinary delights, and even a bizarre chapel of the bones, the Czech Republic continues to lure tourists near and far with its diversity.

Have you visited any spots on this Czech Republic road trip itinerary? What was your favorite destination in the Czech Republic or what would you add to this Czech Republic road trip? Let me know in the comments below!

Fantoci  .

To je prostě kultovní film. Kdo neviděl road trip tak nezažil nic skvělýho. My jsme podle něj dokonce pojmenovali svoje hromadné chlastací akce. Tohle je film co za to stojí. Pes co hulí trávu, černoška s obrovskejma bombarďákama, jeden obří had, onanie jinak a jedna špatná videokazeta. A Road Trip může běžet a běžet. ( 10.08.2005 )

Cappuccino

(20.1.17/MAC) ( 06.02.2017 )

  • Todd Phillips chcel pôvodne počas scény preskoku cez most, aby v pozadí hrala Mobyho verzia bondovské znelky, no rozpočet neumožňoval dovoliť si kúpiť licenciu, preto v scéne hrá generická hudba. ( Real Tom Hardy )
  • Do role Beth ( Amy Smart ) bola zvažovaná aj Reese Witherspoon . ( Real Tom Hardy )

One Week Road Trip Itinerary Around the Czech Republic

Read a wonderful piece by Alma Hayes written for our blog. Find out how to discover the Czech Republic on the road trip within one week!

road trip online cz

The Czech Republic is best experienced at a leisurely pace, and taking a road trip is a great way to do it.  A previous article discussed the basics of driving in this country , and the next step is to create an itinerary. With all the attractions, however, it can be daunting to choose where to go. To help you out, here’s a one-week road trip itinerary that will guide you to the best of what the Czech Republic has to offer.

road trip online cz

The usual starting point is the capital, Prague, which is full of stunning architecture. It’s home to Charles Bridge, a 13th-century stone bridge that goes over the River Vltava, and the Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí) which has old Gothic buildings. The National Museum is another good stop, and you can go to Nota Bene afterwards, which is just behind it. You can also buy good street food here.

road trip online cz

After exploring Prague, you can drive to the town of Tábor. It’s quiet exterior conceals the dramatic history of the Hussite movement. You can try putting on a chain mail and sitting on a throne to feed your medieval fantasies.  Tábor’s underground tunnels  are another popular attraction.

road trip online cz

Take Highway 3 and make a quick pit stop at the Hluboká Castle, former home of one of Bohemia’s most powerful families, the Schwarzenbergs. It’s considered by many as one of Czech Republic’s most magnificent structures, as the Gothic-baronial design is breathtaking. Afterwards, proceed to Šumava National Park by traversing Highway 145. You’ll be treated to stunning views of the spruce-laden countryside. It’s not called the “Green Roof of Europe” for nothing. A few hours of trekking will bring you to the Černá mountain, the source of Vltava’s waters. The Šumava region is also home to Kvilda village where you can spend the night.

road trip online cz

Take Highways 4 and 39 towards Český Krumlov, a quaint town that has a pastoral yet Gothic and Baroque feel. Don’t miss a visit to the Český Krumlov Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It has a well-preserved Baroque theatre, which was constructed in 1682. Next, you can go to Kemp Branná by taking Highway 160. The camp has rustic but comfortable teepees. You also have a front-seat ticket to Europe’s clear night sky while enjoying food and drinks by the bonfire. You’ll soon be leaving the Bohemian countryside, so get the most out of it.

road trip online cz

About an hour’s drive from the camp is České Budějovice, South Bohemia’s capital. It’s home to one of the oldest breweries in the world, which boasts a 1000-year history of beer and merriment. Points of interest include the Museum of South Bohemia; Masné Krámy restaurant; and the Dominican monastery, the city’s most valuable historic building which has been in existence since the 13th century.

road trip online cz

A few hours from České Budějovice is Telč, a town in Southern Moravia. Its town square is a  definitive example of Moravian architecture . An Italian Renaissance castle surrounded by burgher houses and arcades sits at Telč’s centre. You can stay in one of the town’s hotels or carry on and drive to Brno.

road trip online cz

The vast vineyards of the Moravian region flank the road to Brno, Czech Republic’s second largest city. The city’s attractions include the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul in Petrov hill; the Abbey of Saint Thomas where Gregor Mendel discovered the science of genetics; and The Labyrinth under Vegetable Market.

Driving in the Czech Republic A road trip through the Czech Republic is now easier than ever because various tools such as GPS and social media are now at your disposal. In another post,  we tackled how to use Instagram in planning your trip  and looking for places worth checking out. In addition, drivers can also use other advanced tech such as route optimisation software.  Verizon Connect explain how route optimisation software allows drivers to plan and manage routes  through smart devices. Today’s drivers have a multitude of options to help them get to their destination as efficiently as possible. This is even more important when you’re in a foreign language country, as the GPS route planner will eliminate any language barriers that you may have to contend with trying to read road signs. With technology so accessible nowadays, using it to get the most out of your travels should be a no-brainer – even more so when you’re visiting a beautiful country like the Czech Republic.

18. 9. 2022 3 min.

Historie Velké ceny Brna zasahuje coby mezinárodní závod až do roku 1950.

12. 4. 2024 Jiří Lacina Tipy a rady

Pokud zde chcete pořádat nějakou akci, můžete si v týdnu nebo i o víkendu či svátcích pronajmout celý okruh a dokonce i celý areál .

5. 4. 2024 Jiří Lacina Tipy a rady

Autodrom Most

S jihem přišlo i teplo.

A nabádala nás, ať si dáme pár káv dopředu, protože už dlouho dobré kafe mít nebudeme.

Do univerzitního města Salamanca proudí i řada českých studentů

Porvat se o víno, a pak ho sníst

Nebylo kam pospíchat, nachystali jsme si večeři v podobě námi připravených tapas a akorát do půlnoci jsme zvládli všechno sníst a mohli jsme vyrazit na náměstí s kilem hroznového vína.

Zamora a kočky

Chyba, chyba a další chyba

Cestou zpět jsme měli opět naplánované zastávky. Jeli jsme zpět pouze tři, Gábi zůstala ve Španělsku, což samozřejmě naše finance trochu zkreslí a ve finále to bude dražší, než kdybyste jeli ve čtyřech.

IMG 1484

Po 685 km jsme dorazili do Bordeaux, kde jsme místo barů zamířili do fitka, abychom si trochu vynahradili to přejídání se a alkoholové opíjení.

Občas cestujete z bazéno do oceánu, jindy z bláta do louže

A kolik to tedy stálo?

Byli jsme čtyři a pak tři, kdybychom jeli celou trasu v plném počtu, určitě bychom výdaje snížili. Vše jsme platili dohromady a zapisovali do aplikace Spendee  a nakonec jsme si to rozdělili.

Ideálně jsme vybírali s kuchyňkou, abycho si mohli uvařit večeři, a popřípadě i snídani. Ubytování jsme rezervovali přes booking.com a Airbnb.com.
