Sawyer Brown is always a treat to see in concert. Mark Miller and the boys have so much energy and love the songs too. They really interact well with the crowd of both young and old. The boys get along together well even after all these years.

Sawyer Brown never fails to put on great show and Logan's show was no exception! They were fabulous! The band's amazing energy is second only to their kick butt sound. I have followed Sawyer Brown since 1983 and they just get better and better. Shayne is second to none on the guitar. Mark's voice continues to wow. Put those 2 together for "All These Years" and while the song is about adultery, they are wonderful. They bring tears to my eyes Every time. "Traveling Band" is one of my new favorites. I love the sincerity. I love Hobie's solos! He is such an incredible talent! Shayne's covers were awesome! As long as this band travels I will drive to see them, it was terrific they were in Logan this year, last year I drove to Price. Thank Sawyer Brown;Mark, Hobie, Jim, Joe and Shayne for Blessing us with your God given talent!

ABOUT SAWYER BROWN

Mark miller.

Mark Miller was born in Ohio, but moved to Florida when he was in eighth grade. Growing up, he played basketball, went to the beach, worked at Walt Disney World, and went to school—pretty much in that order. He was on the basketball team at the University of Central Florida when he started writing songs, finally deciding to move to Nashville to focus on singing and songwriting. The move worked out okay.

Mark has written many of Sawyer Brown’s hits, including “Step That Step,” “The Walk,” “Thank God for You,” “The Boys and Me,” as well as the band’s anthem: “Some Girls Do.”

Mark discovered the band Casting Crowns and has produced all of the band’s CDs, winning a Grammy for his work with them along the way. In April 2013, “Ring the Bell,” a movie that Mark wrote and produced, was released—and he has more movies in the pre-production stage. He doesn’t sleep much. Mark and his wife Lisa have two children—Madison and Gunnar. They own their daddy.

Gregg Hubbard

Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard was born and raised in Apopka, Florida—The Indoor Foliage Capitol of the World. So there.

There was never a time Hobie can remember that he wasn’t listening to—and by listening we mean obsessed with—music. He grew up attached to the radio and record player—and is still rarely very far from either one today…although the record player looks more like an ipod these days.

Hobie sang and played piano in church through his high school years and began writing songs when he was in college. He has co-written several of Sawyer Brown’s hits, including “The Dirt Road,” “Drive Me Wild,” “’Round Here,” and “Outskirts of Town,” as well as several songs on the Sawyer Brown Christmas albums. In addition to Sawyer Brown, Hobie has sung background on recording sessions for a variety of artists.

Hobie gave up a promising career in the food services industry to join the band. He might or might not still have the smock.

Joe Smyth never met a percussive instrument he didn’t like—and he can play them all. The band’s original bio stated that Joe played 300 percussive instruments—a number that Hobie made up, but still swears by.

Joe is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and earned a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Miami—but he doesn’t rub that in the other guys’ faces. That speaks volumes about him.

In addition to being a sought-after session drummer, Joe is accomplished symphonic musician, as well. He has played with the Nashville Symphony, including at their heralded appearance at Carnegie Hall.

Joe is also a respected percussion instructor, doing his part to nurture the next generation of drummers and percussionists.

Joe and his wife Dana are the proud parents of Tristan, Jenna, and Bryce.

Shayne hill.

Shayne Hill is the not-so-new “new guy.” Shayne joined the band in June of 2004—after rehearsing with the band once. Once. Yes—he was that good.

Shayne grew up on the road playing music. His family had a band and they toured all across the Western U.S.—with Shayne playing even more instruments than he does today. But no—he will not play fiddle for you. We’ve already asked him.

Once moving to Nashville, Shayne toured with Chely Wright, Avalon, and LeAnn Rimes, just to name a few. He is also an in-demand background singer and guitar player. And since he needs just a little bit more to do, he has his own recording studio—where he can be found whenever one of his kids isn’t crying…and sometimes even when they are.

Shayne and his wife Kristin have two children, Jesse and Harper—they are cute like their mama.

Sawyer Brown Takes Fans Through Their 40-Year History With ‘Get Me To The Stage On Time’ Documentary

sawyer brown tour history

Fire up “Six Days On The Road.”

Sawyer Brown, the influential ’90s group, just unveiled their latest project, and boy, is it a big one.

Set for an October 1st premiere date, executively produced by Blake Shelton, the Sawyer Brown Band movie Get Me To The Stage On Time highlights the band’s accomplishments just in time for their 40th anniversary.

“We’ve got some HUGE NEWS!

We are so excited to officially announce ‘Get Me to the Stage on Time.’

The film gives a behind-the-scenes look at how we’ve traveled millions of miles, made 24 albums, and played 6,000 shows thanks to a legion of fans we could always count on! And we aren’t even close to being done yet.

‘Get Me To The Stage On Time’ will premiere as part of the Nashville Film Festival on Sunday, October 1. Following the film, we are performing live with some special guests!”

With electric live shows filled with hits like “Step By Step,” “Some Girls Do,” and “The Race Is On,” Sawyer Brown is no stranger to the big lights. This documentary will highlight the group in a new light.

Filled with behind-the-scenes footage that covers thousands of miles spent on the road, spanning their 24 albums and 6,000 shows. If you haven’t been to a Sawyer Brown show, you can feel their energy through the footage.

“It’s pretty surreal to watch your life and memories and music play out in a film, but Get Me To The Stage On Time does an amazing job of capturing what this ride has been like.

I think the film shows not only what it took to get our career going but also what it took to keep the wheels from coming off a couple of times.

It also shows why it means so much to us to be where we are now, still playing shows with new music on the horizon. It’s a look at what it means to never give up, no matter what.”

Noted lead singer of the group Mark Miller (who bares an uncanny resemblance to actor Michael Keaton. Seriously, is it just me?)

The documentary features killer clips from shows and the band members discussing their rise to fame and highlights interviews from Blake Shelton, Dolly Parton, Dierks Bentley, and more.

The trailer for Get Me To The Stage On Time  highlights the hardships and victories they eventually had, staying true to their sound and their messaging.

It looks like a killer film.

Artist information.

It’s hard to know where to start when talking about Sawyer Brown.

More than 4,500 shows and counting. More than a million miles behind them and still seeing the highway miles click by outside their bus window. Twenty-three albums. More than 50 chart singles. CMA, ACM, and CMT awards on the shelf. To pull a line from one of the band’s enduring hits: “This is the life and times of a travelin’ band.” A traveling band, indeed. Always on the move—on the road, on stage, and in their career. When asked about what keeps him motivated on the road, lead singer Mark Miller says, “It’s playing the next show. Be grateful for where you’ve been and be excited about where you’re going.”

That excitement has been on display since the very first time Sawyer Brown stepped foot onstage in the early 1980s. Beginning as the road band for another singer, Sawyer Brown broke out on their own playing everything from clubs to pig roasts in those earliest days. “There’s no such thing as a gig we wouldn’t take,” Miller laughs, remembering the beginning of the ride. “We knew that we wanted to play music and we knew that we wanted to work at being the best live band there was—and the only way to do that, was to get out and play shows. And so we did.”

It would certainly be an understatement to say that Sawyer Brown has “played shows.” The band has earned its place as one of the premier live acts in music. The band began by playing 275-300 nights a year for the first decade or more of its career—and has never come off the road. Tireless road warriors, the band thrives on playing live. “Live is where it all comes together for us,” keyboardist Hobie Hubbard says. “The audience brings its own energy, we bring our own energy and the music—and the combination of all of that is what makes playing live so unique. It exists for that moment in time—you’re either there, or you’re not a part of that moment. We’re blessed to be able to be a part of those moments night after night.”

The band’s live shows are legendary. Having been described as “the Rolling Stones of Country Music,” the band bounds onto the stage night after night, delivering its own unique brand of high-energy entertainment, and the band remains a perennial favorite at fairs, festivals, theatres, and casinos. “We love getting to hear the stories of where people have seen us play—and the number of times they’ve seen us play,” drummer Joe Smyth says. “For some, we’re their weekend getaway—they’ve seen us all over the country. But we never lose sight of the fact that on any given night, it’s going to be the first time someone’s seen us—and that’s exciting. We want that show, that night, to live up to everything they hoped for when they came to the show. Couldn’t ask for better motivation.”

Keyboard player Hobie Hubbard agrees: “It’s always humbling when someone comes up after a show and tells us that they hear themselves or their family in our music. I hope that they can look up there on stage and see themselves—because we can sure look out at them and see ourselves. Every day we’re on the road, one of the best parts of the day is walking around whatever town we’re in and just soaking it in—listening to folks talking in restaurants, just watching life unfold one story at a time.”

One story at a time—that is certainly the way that the life and times of this travelin’ band has unfolded. “What we try to do—what we’ve always tried to do, I think—is capture those moments that matter, and capture them in a song,” Miller says. “It seems to me that it’s really the small moments in life that are the big ones, anyway.” And capture those moments the band has. From the tentative moments of transition that underscore Miller’s evocative ballad “The Walk” to the moment that a guy realizes he just might have found the right girl in the band’s energetic signature song “Some Girls Do,” the band consistently manages to bring life to those moments that all to often slip by unnoticed—unnoticed, that is, until a song sings our life back to us.

Mark Miller and his band mates have been singing our life back to us now over the span of the band’s twenty-three albums. In addition to writing and co-writing many of the bands hits, Miller has also produced many of the band’s albums. “Mark’s got a great set of ears,” bass guitarist Jim Scholten says. “When we go into the studio to work on an album, we all contribute and all kick around ideas. And Mark’s got the gift of being able to corral our energy and encourage the best out of all of us.” Scholten laughs and adds, “Just don’t tell him I said that.”

Miller’s creativity extends even beyond Sawyer Brown. He discovered the multiplatinum contemporary Christian band Casting Crowns and has produced all of their records—including winning a Grammy for one of their albums. “Working with Casting Crowns has been an amazing adventure from day one,” Miller says. “Mark Hall is one of the finest songwriters I’ve ever known, and he and the band have an absolute commitment to spreading the Gospel through the songs. It’s a blessing to get to walk along side them in the studio.”

Connection—with Sawyer Brown, the key is in forging those connections. “Every night we’re on stage, I look at my brothers beside me on stage and think how blessed am I that I get to share the ride with these guys. And then I look out at the audience and I’m grateful that those folks have taken this ride with us,” Hobie Hubbard says.

And it really does all come down to those people in the audience for this band. As Mark Miller says, “We’re all this together—all of us. Just like the line in ‘Travelin’ Band” says, ‘Now I want to take this time to thank you’—I wanted our fans to hear a thank-you coming straight from me.” It is a thank-you that at this point literally hundreds of thousands of cheering fans have experienced not only on record, but at the band’s legendary live shows as well. Known for their high-energy, no-holds-barred approach to the concert stage, the band continues to fill venues across the country with the same enthusiasm they have had from day one. “That’s one thing that has never changed,” says lead guitarist Shayne Hill. “The business part of the music business may be changing by the minute, but playing live is still about the same thing it’s always been about: connecting to the audience right there in the moment.”

Sawyer Brown is about connection. In fact, it’s likely safe to say that connection continues to be the driving force of the band. As note connects to note, as singer connects to listener, as each mile of road connects to the one that follows it, the band senses—and forges—those connections every time they record and every time they hit the stage. “I’m a real believer that things happen for a reason—that they unfold the way they do because there’s Someone bigger than us driving this bus,” Miller says. “We know we’ve still have a lot of miles in us. We’ve got our bags packed, got our gear ready, and we’ve got plenty to sing about. We want see where the trip takes us next.”

Wherever that may be, the lyrics to “Travelin’ Band” will come to life—

And now I’d like to take this time to thank you And though it’s been a long and winding road I count my blessings when I see your faces And I look down at this guitar in my hand And I take my place On the stage In a travelin’ band. I’m in a travelin’ band.

After almost 40 years, Sawyer Brown still going strong

Feb. 9—The sun is out. It's 82 degrees in Key West, Florida, and Mark Miller is enjoying his morning before his next show that night.

It's days like these that keep the Sawyer Brown member happy.

"After 40 years, I'm still able to see the country and enjoy myself," he says.

Sawyer Brown burst onto the music scene in the early 1980s. The band's profile began to rise more when it was named the winner of the talent competition "Star Search." In 1984, the band was signed to a major label deal.

Rounding out the band with Miller is Gregg "Hobie" Hubbard, Joe "Curly" Smyth and Shayne Hill. The band will make a stop at Buffalo Thunder Resort Casino on Friday, Feb. 17.

Miller says to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary next year there are several projects in play — one of them is a double album that Blake Shelton is producing.

"Blake is a big fan and he's been working with us on getting it right," Miller says. "It's like we woke up and it's 40 years later. We were all young too. We were all barely out of college. I was 24 and winning 'Star Search' really did just knock down the door for us."

Since it's inception, Sawyer Brown has released 18 studio albums and had three No. 1 singles — "Step That Step," "Some Girls Do" and "Thank God for You." They've had more than 50 songs chart on the Billboard Hot Country Songs.

Miller says the key to the band's longevity has been its reinventions and a couple Hail Marys.

"There have been times that the industry didn't know what to do with us," he says. "We were too rock for country and too country for rock. 'Star Search' put us on the national stage as one genre and everyone loved it. Nashville reluctantly said, 'We'll take you back,' especially in the early years."

Sawyer Brown continued to create its own lane within music, and Miller and crew never backed down from a challenge.

When the pandemic hit in 2020 and touring was paused, Miller says he went down the rabbit hole of listening to the band's music. This led him to the 1999 album, "Drive Me Wild." On that album is the song, "We're Everything to Me," which he had forgotten about.

"I called Hobie and asked him if we wrote it," he says with a laugh. "Hobie told me we did. I listened to that song a few years ago and wondered why it wasn't released as a single. I think people get the message of the song more now."

With a catalog that has hundreds of songs, Miller says audiences won't ever be disappointed when seeing Sawyer Brown perform.

"If you're a Sawyer Brown fan, you'll hear many songs that you know during the set," he says. "We punch you right in the mouth with the songs, 'The Boys and Me' and 'Some Girls Do.' After that it's hit after hit. We also have put four or five songs in a medley so that the songs aren't left out. We give it our all each night on stage. That's what we want the audience to feel."

sawyer brown tour history

For the past four decades, award-wininng country-music band Sawyer Brown , who plays Saturday at the DeJoria Center , has entertained the world over. And it has done it with its founding core members — lead vocalist Mark Miller, keyboardist Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard and drummer Joe “Curly” Smyth.

“Hobie and I went to high school together, and we’ve known Jo-Jo for 40-plus years,” Miller said. “So to still get to do this, especially at the level we can do it at, with guys you share a history with is pretty special.”

After cranking out the tunes since its self-titled 1984 debut, the band, which now features bassist Shayne Hill, has learned what audiences expect from a Sawyer Brown setlist, Miller said.

“We do rotate songs in and out, but we know the big songs the fans want to hear,” he said. “So, we don’t fool around. We play the hits, and if you come to see us, there’s a real good chance you will hear your favorite songs.”

Those hard times were the times when we  had to put our backs against the wall and come out swinging.” Mark Miller, Sawyer Brown lead singer

Still, the band knows the importance of new songs, so in September, it released “Under This Ole Hat,” Miller said.

“We actually played it for the first time the other night, and it smokes,” he said.

Miller wrote “Under This Ole Hat,” an up-tempo song that pays tribute to life on the road, with Cody Jinks and Tennessee Jet .

“When I was writing it, I really didn’t think about having to sing it,” Miller said with a laugh. “It’s a lot of lyrics and it goes by really fast.”

Sawyer Brown fans will recognize the band’s trademark energy in the song, which Miller says has showcased from day one.

“This song, like all of our others, has a sound that goes all the way back to the early days,” he said. “We have an idea of who we are and what we want to sound like and what we want to say.”

Those early songs came from Miller’s heart, when he wrote songs for multi-Grammy Award winner Charlie Pride , who died in 2020.

“I would get scolded for writing the stuff I was writing, because everyone wanted me to write more traditional songs,” Miller said. “So all the songs they weren’t happy about became Sawyer Brown songs.”

“Under This Ole Hat” is the first single from the band’s upcoming album, “Desperado Troubadours,” which was produced by award-winning country music star Blake Shelton, who is also known for his work as a judge on “ The Voice .”

The idea for recording the album was to commemorate Sawyer Brown’s 40th anniversary, according to Miller.

“Last year, my brother, Frank, who is our manager, said we needed to do something special,” he said. “And he also had the idea of having Blake produce it.”

The band reached out to Shelton, who replied with an emphatic “Yes” within five minutes, Miller said.

“Come to find out, (our 1989 single) ‘Race Is On’ was the first record Blake ever bought, and Sawyer Brown was his first concert,” he said. “So, he’s a bit of a historian of the band, himself.”

The band also decided to make some behind-the-scenes videos to further celebrate the band’s upcoming anniversary, and that idea grew into the documentary film, “Get Me to the Stage On Time,” which premiered last month at the Nashville Film Festival, Miller said.

“We just thought it would be fun to document some stuff just so our kids and grandkids would know our story,” he said.

But Miller’s daughter, Madison Brown, who has her own reality TV show called “Chasing Down Madison Brown,” thought the band’s story would interest more people than just family and friends.

“So she decided to put her other projects on hold so she could produce and direct the documentary,” Miller said. “And while we were in the studio recording the album, Blake wanted to be a part of the film and signed on as the executive producer.”

Miller said the film hits him in the heart, because it highlights the band’s awards and accolades, as well as its trials.

“I have to give Madison some props, because it brings back a lot of memories about all the stuff that it took for us to get here,” he said. “A lot of people don’t know the whole story and the struggles we went through, and those are exposed in the film. Even my son has told me that they had no idea of what we have gone through. But those hard times were the times when we  had to put our backs against the wall and come out swinging.”

The film will be available through streaming services in March, and a book about the band is slated to come out in February, Miller said.

“We’ve also already slotted 55 cities on the upcoming tour, and the schedule will probably double in the next few weeks,” he said.

Sawyer Brown is one of those bands that makes sure audiences get what they pay for.

“We never phone it in,” he said. “Every time we walk on stage, our motto is that we play to the people who are there, no matter how big or small the audience is.”

To give the audiences what they want, band members make sure they’re road ready, Miller said.

“We know there is an expectation, so we make sure we’re fit to serve,” he said. “We work out while we’re on the road and when we’re home so we can do these shows at the level we know folks like to see. And we have this joke — Our audiences don’t come to hear us. They come to see us.”

Miller looks forward to Saturday’s concert at the DeJoria Center.

“Utah is one of our favorite areas in the whole world to play,” he said. “Salt Lake City was our first headlining show in the Salt Palace days, and we can’t wait to play in Kamas.”

Sawyer Brown celebrates their 40 th anniversary with a Canadian tour that will come to Prince George October 21 at the CN Centre.

The show includes an appearance by Shenandoah with special guest George Fox opening the show.

Sawyer Brown got their start on Star Search with Ed McMahon, before there was The Voice and American Idol, and those millions of television viewers became fans for life.

“One of the unique things about the band is we don’t really have a lot of love songs,”  Mark Miller,  lead singer and frontman, said. “We have life songs.”

Sawyer Brown keeps delivering their unapologetically blue-collar, grass-roots message through their music.

As the Travelin’ Band song said “they were searchin’ for stars when we came along, it was rock ’n roll in a country song, there were five of us thinking that we can, this is the life and times of a travelin’ band.”

Tickets go on sale Friday, April 19. With concert presale tickets on Wednesday, April 17 at 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. Thursday, April 18. Password is sawyer. Tickets only at www.TicketsNorth.ca .

The four members of Sawyer Brown are celebrating 40 years in entertainment and will kick off their Canadian tour in Edmonton 10 days before the Brandon show.

Their careers took off in the early 1980s when they appeared on the television show “Star Search” and won first place, which included prize money and a recording contract. Since then, Sawyer Brown has released more than a dozen albums and had three No. 1 singles — “Thank God for You,” “Some Girls Do” and “Step That Step.”

This February, the band released a new album, “Desperado Troubadours,” with the single and music video “Under This Ole Hat.”

But one of the band’s most requested songs, said Mark Miller, who has been the frontman since 1981, is the song “The Race Is On.”

“One of the unique things about the band is we don’t really have a lot of love songs. We have life songs,” Miller stated in a news release.

The concert at Westoba Place will also feature the six members of Shenandoah, with two of the original artists, lead singer Marty Raybon and drummer Mike McGuire.

Shenandoah’s top 10 hits included “She Doesn’t Cry Anymore” and “Mama Knows,” as well as songs that reached No. 1 — “Church on Cumberland Road” and “Two Dozen Roses.”

In 1991, the country, bluegrass and gospel music group won the Academy of Country Music award for vocal group of the year.

Five years later, the group won a Grammy for best country performance by a duo or group with vocal for the duet with Alison Krauss, “Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart.”

The opening act for both groups is Alberta’s George Fox, who was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022.

Fox is a three-time Juno Award winner for country male vocalist of the year and has won male vocalist of the year three times with the Canadian Country Music Association.

His debut singles, “Angelina” and “Goldmine,” climbed the country charts, and his top 10 songs included “Mustang Heart” and “I Give You My Word.”

During his international touring in the 1980s, Fox opened for Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson and George Strait.

Tickets for the Sawyer Brown 40th anniversary tour featuring Shenandoah and George Fox go on sale this Friday and can be purchased by calling 204-726-3555 or visiting www.ticketmaster.ca.
