The Mediterranean coastline of France (its southeast corner) enjoys a pleasantly mild to warm climate throughout the year, despite being among the more northerly coasts on the Mediterranean.
During season 2019, the largest French Riviera ports reported 85 ship calls with 38,000 tourists (Nice), 88 ship calls with 207,000 tourists (Villefranche), and 46 ship calls with 455,100 tourists (Cannes plus Antibes).
French Riviera tourism facts
French Riviera tours are a major-fun-not-cheap activity, and the region itself is one of the top luxury Mediterranean cruise destinations for travelers from all parts of the world - the whole year-round. The following map shows all ports of call on Mediterranean cruises along the Cote d'Azur coast.
- The French Riviera is one of the first contemporary resort areas. It starred at the end of the 18th century as a health resort for the upper class of Britain. In the mid 19th century, with the railway's arrival, it became the vacation spot and playground of aristocrats, such as King Edward VII and Queen Victoria. In the summertime, it played home to members of the Rothschild family.
- Later, in the first half of the 20th century, the French Riviera was frequented by writers and artists, including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Edith Wharton, Aldous Huxley, and Somerset Maugham, as well as wealthy Europeans and Americans. After World War II, Côte d'Azur became a popular convention site and tourist destination. Celebrities like Brigitte Bardot and Elton John, have homes there.
- Officially, the French Riviera shelters 163 nationalities with more than 84,000 foreign residents. Its largest city is Nice, with a population of 348,000. The city brings together 24 communes. Nice is home to the third-busiest airport in France - Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, after Charles de Gaulle Airport and Paris-Orly. The A8 autoroute and the old main road (known as Route Nationale 7 - DN7 in the Var and D6007 in Alpes-Maritimes) run through the region.
- The principality of Monaco, surrounded by the French Riviera, has a total population of over 2 million. It contains seaside resorts such as Antibes, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Cannes, Cap-d'Ail, Fréjus, Juan-les-Pins, Sainte Maxime, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Saint-Raphaël, Saint-Tropez and Villefranche-sur-Mer. It is home to a high-tech park or technopoly at Sophia-Antipolis and a technology and research center at the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis.
- As a major cruising and yachting area, the French Riviera boasts several marinas. According to the Economic Development Agency of Côte d'Azur, each year it hosts 50% of the superyacht fleet of the whole world, with 90% of all superyachts visiting the region at least once in their lifetime.
The French Riviera benefits from 300 sunny days per year, 115 km of coastline and beaches, 3,000 restaurants, 14 ski resorts, and 18 golf courses.
Weather in the French Riviera
The region has a mild Mediterranean climate - neither cold in winter nor too hot in summer. Cold winds (Mistral) can blow through the French Riviera in winter, but the mountains by the coast are usually able to protect the harbor towns. Côte d’Azur has a warm and sunny summer, with average temperatures hovering around 80 degrees.
Spring comes early and by February brings the first mimosas into bloom. By April the days are sunny and warm, and all the gardens are filled with flowers. The climate is ideal from May to September/October, with plenty of sunshine and beautifully warm nights. July and August are very busy, so during this period advanced booking for camping sites, hotels, and even bed and breakfast is advisable and essential in many places.
French Riviera food and drinks
The French Riviera boasts traditional seafood dishes to indulge in. Taste the famous Marseille bouillabaisse, which is a delicious stew with various fish, shellfish, herbs, and spices. Or cool down with Salade Nicoise - a delicious combination of tomatoes, green beans, anchovies, tuna, hard-boiled eggs, new potatoes, and other vegetables over crispy lettuce.
Wonder what the drink of choice is? Of course, Champagne from up north. But nice chilled rose wine, pastis, and kir made with creme de Cassis are always welcomed all over the region at tables and dinner parties.
French Riviera Cruise Club
In 2016, FRCC ("French Riviera Cruise Club" /local tourism network) released a tourist guide designed specifically for cruise ship crew members on vessels stopping in the ports of Antibes , Bandol , Cannes , Cassis , Marseille , Sanary-sur-Mer , St Raphael , St Tropez , Toulon , Villefranche-sur-Mer (Nice) and Monte Carlo (Monaco) . The new guide provides information on local stores, banks/ATMs, pharmacies, tour agencies, and car rental companies, restaurants, and bars (all located within walking distance from the terminals), plus public transportation and other information.
Why targeting the ships' crew? FRCC states that the crew represents at least 1/5th of the ship’s capacity. Statistics also show that 80+ percent of the crew goes ashore to tour the port destination individually - which means more money for local economies.
French Riviera resort cities
The glitz and glamor of Côte d’Azur are rivaled by few places on the globe. Known mainly for its warm weather, pristine blue waters, high rollers, and crowded beaches, the French Riviera is also famous for the giant yachts of St.Tropez, the star-studded Cannes film festival and the high-end resorts of Monaco. However, this expensive and overly crowded area is to be loved for a reason - it’s chic and it's beautiful, with great weather and even better food. While there is no place to avoid people and high prices totally, there are some lesser-known yet equally spectacular destinations.
The most spectacular part of the French Riviera and the most upmarket in terms of tourism is East of Nice - from the Italian border to Nice. The mountains come almost down to the edge of water and old towns like Villefranche Sur Mer or Menton are crowded in between. The most famous of these is Monte-Carlo.
Monte Carlo
Monte Carlo is situated in the tiny Principality of Monaco - an independent state, surrounded by France on three sides, and by the Mediterranean on the fourth, ruled by the Grimaldi family since the 13th century. Most famed for its casino, Monte-Carlo is a micro-state, with the highest per-capita GDP in the world. It's also among the most densely populated states. Its residents don't pay any income tax, so it is a tax-haven. But not a tax-free country - VAT is the same as in France. However, Monaco offers fantastic shopping opportunities with its prestigious luxury shops, with the most famous brands in jewellery, designer clothing, and other luxury goods.
Eze and St Jean Cap Ferrat
Eze is a little village overlooking Cap Ferrat. Clustered on the small peninsula St Jean Cap Ferrat are some of the most expensive homes in France. In the past, St Jean was home to princes, rich businessmen, and actors from Switzerland and Paris. Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, now open to the public, is a beautiful vestige of a bygone age. Nowadays St Jean is home to international jet set.
Nice is the sixth city in France and the biggest resort on French Riviera. Nice offers historic quarters, long seafront, a beautiful flower market, famous sites, and sights, including Chagall museum, Matisse museum, and the Russian Orthodox basilica. Nice is well endowed in hotels and boasts five-star palaces like the Negresco, as well as backpacker hotels situated away from tourist quarters. Most of the Nice beaches consist of stones, and taking a swim in the Mediterranean waters is popular among the visitors here. Because Nice is a major port in France, there is an abundance of fresh seafood, great shopping, fine restaurants, as well as plenty of things to do.
Cagnes Sur Mer
With a historic old quarter, this town is also famous for its racecourse for horse racing, and the Renoir Museum. The old village of Saint Paul de Vence lies inland from Cagnes and is known as 'The artist's village', famous for the art galleries, the most important of which is the Fondation Maeght, with its remarkable collection of art and sculpture of 20th century.
Situated a few miles south of Cagnes, it is one of the classic French Riviera resorts, with an old town, marina, 48 beaches, and rocky headland. Antibes offers a number of museums, including Picasso museum, with the best collections of Picassos in France. Once the home and inspiration for Picasso, the town is now a favorite spot for vacationing French families. In the evenings, the old port outdoor restaurants are truly flooded. You can relax on the beach or shop in the covered market for meat, fish, cheese and fresh vegetables. West of Antibes lies Juan Les Pins, a very small but smart Mediterranean resort, popular for the film stars and actors who visit it.
Also to the west of Antibes, lies Cannes, another main city of French Riviera, and of course, the most famous for its Film Festival - the biggest annual event in the film world after the Hollywood Oscars ceremony. The city is also popular for trade fairs, including the Midem, music industry fair, taking place every January. During the events, Cannes attracts visitors who hope to get a glimpse of favorite film stars and musicians. Anyone who thinks of visiting the city at the time of the festival should book accommodations months in advance. There are a few free attractions in Cannes - admiring the fancy yachts in the harbor, checking out Palais des Festivales, strolling the winding streets of Old Town, or visiting the two islands in Cannes bay.
Saint-Tropez
St-Tropez has become an international tourist Mecca since the days when Brigitte Bardot started enjoying its beaches. The port city has a lot to offer in terms of sites and activities. The city has a great yacht (and people) watching. Sit at a sidewalk café in Old Port and watch as Parisian jet-setters, tourists, and international playboys pass by. Don't miss the huge yachts line up in port, where the famous and rich, dressed in their finest, dine on deck at night. However, the best time to visit the glitzy port town is in the off-months, when you can appreciate the nature of Saint-Tropez.
The third-largest city in France is Marseille - notoriously diverse because of the location. Once a destination for immigrants from Spain and Italy, today the city is home to many people who come from Turkey and Northern Africa. Marseille offers a lot to visitors - from the unique markets and delicious seafood to the busy shopping districts and scenic Calanques.
Situated close to the Italian border, Menton is as much Italian as French. It has its micro-climate, milder than the rest of French Riviera, perfect for the plants in the many famous gardens of the town. The resort is also pedestrian-friendly, and it makes the city great for tourists who travel the Riviera. Every February Menton hosts the "Lemon Festival", interesting for the citrus-themed decorations and live music all over the city.
Famous for the sheltered inlets and cliffs that drop into the ocean, this charming town is great to stop along the Mediterranean coast of France. Cassis is less expensive and less crowded than Cannes and Saint-Tropez, however, it's just as picturesque. Scenic cliffs, pastel-colored buildings, charming beaches, and perfect local wines make the town a must-see on Côte d’Azur.
French Riviera cruise ports
Mediterranean cruise ship travel deals are the best as experiences and cheapest as prices among all European cruise vacation options. Mediterranean Sea cruises have some of the highest price-per-value ratings. These are also often rated as "absolutely best" among sea voyages involving love, romance, and history. History and romance are blended perfectly in all Mediterranean uniquely special itineraries connecting picturesque Europe, exotic Asia, and the so mysterious Africa.
In comparison to the best ships to Alaska or the Caribbean Sea, Mediterranean ship cruises offer the same Sun, hotel amenities and onboard activities, but adds also luxurious beaches, the charm of old cities (sophisticated experiences with feature architecture, museums, markets), the traditional Mediterranean gourmet cuisine (with top selections of French and Italian wines).
- We list here again the France Riviera ports linked to their pages with location maps, port information and current cruise ship schedule - Antibes , Bandol , Cannes , Cassis , Marseille , Sanary-sur-Mer , St Raphael , St Tropez , Toulon , Villefranche-sur-Mer (Nice), Monte Carlo (Monaco)
- Some big cruise ships may offer longer itineraries (cheaper per day prices) with Mediterranean back-to-back cruise deals (aka B2B), which along with the French ports of call also visit ports in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (Greece / Greek Islands and Turkey).
I paid $1,890 for a 7-day Mediterranean cruise on a small sailing boat. I'd choose it over a mega ship every time — here's what it was like.
- I took a seven-night cruise from the French Riviera on a small sailing ship called the Star Clipper.
- It cost $1,890 for a private cabin; the intimate feel transported me to a bygone era of seafaring.
- I thought the relaxed vibe and limited guest count made for a less-touristy cruise than a mega ship.
I wouldn't consider myself an avid cruiser, but over the last few years, I've fallen in love with small-ship ocean and river cruises.
As a travel writer, I'm always looking for a quiet place to escape.
Pre-pandemic, I was excited to hear from a friend about the cruise line Star Clippers , a line of tall, traditionally-rigged sailing ships serving destinations in Europe, the Caribbean, and Central America.
Once the world started opening back up to travel, I eagerly booked the small ship's seven-night cruise on their Star Clipper vessel , traveling around the coast of Corsica and the French Riviera in July 2022.
I'd never been to the French Riviera before, and was excited to explore a new place, and board a new-to-me small ship sailing line.
The Star Clipper only fits 166 guests, according to the cruise line's website.
Small ships typically carry under 1,000 passengers , while larger vessels can usually accommodate several thousand guests. Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , for example, which is currently the world's largest cruise ship, has a capacity for 7,000 guests, and includes 18 decks, multiple dining options, pools, and recreational spaces.
By comparison, Star Clippers' Star Clipper has a capacity of just 166 guests .
I've haven't cruised on a mega ship before and never wanted to, since I think I'd be overwhelmed by the onboard casinos, amusement parks, and mall-like promenades.
But in the past few years, I have enjoyed sailing on smaller cruise ships, which I find to be more enjoyable and relaxed due to their modest size and limited entertainment options, like one movie theater and one to three pool areas, at most.
While researching on Star Clipper's website, I was sold on their French Riviera cruise when I saw that the company was offering a solo rate for my desired dates. This meant the single-supplement surcharge for being a single passenger in a room meant for two would be waived.
This fee is often charged to solo travelers as it helps the cruise line make up for the lost revenue that would have come from a second person onboard, the LA Times reported .
Without that fee, I paid the standard rate of $1,890 for a private cabin for seven nights, and flew from my home in San Francisco to France to start the cruise.
When I saw the ship for the first time, it reminded me of something out of "Robinson Crusoe."
According to Star Clippers Ltd, the ship I sailed on is a 379-feet-long clipper ship , which is a type of sailing ship that was popular in the mid-19th century and built for speed, with large sails .
When I boarded the boat, I was immediately impressed and felt transported to worlds I'd only ever read about in novels, like "Robinson Crusoe."
Wooden masts held up the sails, which were massive and bright white. The sails reminded me of stories I'd read about seafaring pirates and legendary Arctic explorers.
While the Star Clipper was built to cruise on wind power, I also learned from a crew member that when there isn't wind, the ship relies on a low-sulfur gas oil, which the cruise line says it produces less pollution than other gas.
I was happy to hear this, since I'm always looking for ways to travel that are more eco-conscious.
I made my way to my room, a 118-square feet Commodore Deck cabin with a double bed, dressing table, closet, bathroom, and porthole windows.
I booked a category three cabin on the Commodore Deck , which was the lowest of the ship's four passenger decks.
The cabin was simple, with essentials like a double bed, floor-length mirror, closet, television, and private bathroom.
I thought the bathroom was tiny, but it had what I needed with a shower, toilet, and small sink. There wasn't a curtain around the shower though, and the water drained to the center of the floor.
Although comfortable, the room felt small for me. I made it work as a solo traveler, but I'm not sure I would want to share the same space with someone else.
My cabin door opened into a hallway, which was closed off completely a few times for crew safety drills.
Next time, I'd be willing to spend more for a room on a higher level that opens onto a deck.
The ship's onboard amenities included a dining hall, sun deck, and plunge pools. I These were the places where I spent most of my time, connecting with other passengers.
I didn't spend much time in my room since I preferred to take advantage of the ship's common spaces.
This included a main dining room, piano bars, a library, two pools, and sun decks.
I enjoyed swapping stories with other passengers in the main dining hall, reading on a shaded lounge chair on the top-level sun deck, and cooling off in the two small plunge pools.
There was also a small massage tent on the sun deck, where I splurged on a few treatments that were surprisingly soothing, despite being within earshot of conversations and music from the on-deck bar.
We departed from Cannes, France, and sailed until we stopped in Portofino, Italy, for an afternoon. For the rest of the trip, we journeyed around the island of Corsica and France's Côte d'Azur.
Because we were on a small boat, we were able to dock at small ports in each destination that I was told by crew would be inaccessible to larger cruise ships.
I appreciated this, as I thought the docks weren't busy and we could deboard easily. Most ports were in small coastal towns that were quiet and not crowded, which I also enjoyed for afternoon excursions.
I don't recall seeing a mega-cruise ship the entire time I was on the Star Clippers ship. This made the cruise feel more inclusive for me, and less touristy.
Even though the number of food options were somewhat limited, I enjoyed the casual dining atmosphere on the ship, and the lighthearted nightly entertainment.
The ship had one main dining room where passengers ate buffet breakfast and lunch, and a sit-down meal for dinner. There was also an open-air cocktail bar on the sun deck where I could grab snacks between meals or in the evening. While the food options weren't as extensive as what's available on some mega ships, I appreciated the laidback setting.
During the cruise, the cocktail bar became a central hub for guests like me. We'd gather at the bar for mid-day hangouts, and evening activities like music trivia and a talent show.
Each night, the bar also doubled as a disco. Our cruise director, Carlos, led choreographed dances like the macarena, while the ship DJ, Kirby, played music. There was also a pirate-themed night, where passengers wore bandanas and plastic swords provided by the crew to play competition games. I found it lighthearted and cheesy, but also great fun.
I jumped at the chance to try something new by helping the crew hoist the sails and climbing the crow's nest.
I learned on our cruise that there were 74 crew members and 120 guests in total onboard.
Since the Star Clipper relies primarily on wind power, I noticed the ship crew was always hard at work to maintain the sails or change tack to take advantage of the wind.
On a few occasions when it was time to hoist the sails, the cruise director announced over the ship's loudspeaker that passengers who wanted to could help. On several days, we were also given the chance to climb one of the ship's four masts and the crow's nest, which a crew member told me was about 50 feet above deck.
I jumped at the opportunity to climb the crow's nest. I strapped into a harness and made my way up a sturdy rope ladder on the mast. Seeing the ship and ocean from above was breathtaking, and I was happy to have a new experience under my belt.
What I especially loved about the Star Clipper was its unscheduled days, which allowed me to explore at my own pace.
The cruise offered off-board excursions, but I learned that at least 20 passengers had to sign up in order for the activity to take place.
Many other passengers I met were repeat customers on the French Riviera cruise and the Star Clipper ship, so they said they weren't as interested in excursions.
And although I've enjoyed planned itineraries and activity days on other cruises, I didn't miss them as much on the Star Clipper, and instead thought the relaxed schedule fit nicely with the cruise's atmosphere.
Instead of taking guided tours on days at port, I mostly went swimming in the ocean, boarded a small boat to run into town or the beach, or relaxed into lounge chairs on the sun deck.
There was internet available on the ship, paid per hour, but I found the connection wasn't very strong when I tried it once. Instead, I used my international T-Mobile cell plan, which gave me unlimited data , for the rest of the trip.
The days I did go ashore were refreshingly low-key.
Although I went ashore most mornings or afternoons, it was often only for a couple of hours, either to sit on a beach or take a walk through the local village. I never planned an itinerary, and instead just explored on my own before heading back to the ship for dinner.
In Portofino, Italy, I trekked narrow stone pathways to a 15th-century castle , ate gelato by the harbor, and admired the city's pastel-colored homes. In the Corsica town of L'Ile Rousse, I stopped to admire the Marinella Mermaid , a life-size bronze mermaid statue on a large rock in the harbor, before heading to a nearby white-sand beach.
Some days, the crew would bring water toys, like tiny sailboats and paddleboards, on shore for passengers to use along the coastline. We could also borrow the ship's snorkeling gear.
My favorite memories of the cruise were when we'd depart for the next port-of-call, and theme music from the movie "1492: Conquest of Paradise" played over the ship's speaker system as we headed out to sea. Those moments felt magical as the song would always inspire me to race up to the sun deck to listen and watch the ship's sails unfurl.
For stepping away from my busy everyday schedule and simply enjoying the sunshine, sea, and scenery, I thought my cruise on the Star Clipper was fantastic.
While I typically enjoy a bit more structure to my cruises, as well as active itineraries about the history and culture of the places we're visiting, I still loved the relaxed experience of sailing on the Star Clipper.
The limited number of passengers and casual atmosphere made for a peaceful getaway, and I had fun exploring port towns at my own pace. I also appreciated the opportunity to see how a clipper ship is run, and loved that it gave me the feeling of being in an old seafaring story.
I'm already thinking about booking the cruise line's seven-night Costa Rica and Panama itinerary for 2025. Although next time, I'll choose a room on the main or top deck with a bathtub and quicker access to the main decks.

A MEDITERRANEAN MIXTURE
France's Cote d'Azur boasts a healthy helping of historic culture, but it also borrows from its Mediterranean neighbours in delightful – and delicious – ways. Sun-drenched bougainvillea vines beckon you to explore its colourful, cobbled streets.
BOLDLY BAROQUE
Centuries of Italian culture have seeped into France and its famous Baroque architectural style. The terracotta roof tiles of old town Nice might have you feeling like you're in Italy . In Menton, you can walk down the coast a bit to the city reflected in the waters, evoking the Italian city of Portofino .
ITALIAN FOOD, FRENCH AIR
Many of Nice's residents are ethnically Italian, and while you may never know where your pizza-maker hails from, taste buds don't lie: the saltiness of the pancetta, the Italian version of bacon, will be unmistakable. Feast on some savoury lobster bisque, or sample clafoutis – a creamy, custardy tart typically packed with cherries – in a local patisserie.
OUT OF THE SUN, BUT STILL IN THE LIGHT
The French Riviera is hot most of the year, but getting out of the sun doesn't preclude opportunities for illumination. Visit museums dedicated to the work of French natives such as Marc Chagall and Henri Mattisse, or step into Nice's Musee Massena, which offers magical views of European paintings and sculptures from through the ages.
CATCH THE COSTAL VIBE
Umbrella-shaded city beaches or tucked-away coves of quietude? How you experience the shores of France's famous Riviera during your holiday is entirely up to you. Along the Cote d'Azur, there are as many versions of paradise as there are shades of blue.
PRICELESS PANORAMA
The details of the French Riviera are beautiful, but zooming out leads to spectacular sights as well. Take a day trip to Eze Sur Mer and enjoy the stunning view from its botanical garden, or walk up Nice's Castle Hill to see this outstanding city from a bird's-eye view.
ALL YOU CANNES ASK FOR
If you're craving more time at sea, find a French captain to take you afloat. Just head down to the docks of cities like Cannes or Nice, and enquire about hourly boat hire. Set sail on Marseille's cliff-strewn Calanque des Goudes, or head out to secluded Ile Sainte-Marguerite off the coast of Cannes.
GET NICE AND RELAXED
In the French Riviera, you don't have to go far at all to find paradise. From Nice's Promenade des Anglais to the rocky shores of Villefranche-sur-Mer, the urban beaches of the Cote d'Azur will make you forget that you're anywhere near a city.
FIND YOUR INNER ROMANTIC IN THE FRENCH RIVIERA
France is the gateway to the Mediterranean – and not just to nearby holiday destinations like Monte Carlo , Italy and Spain . Use your trip to France's coast as a springboard for discovery to far-off destinations like the crystalline coast of Croatia and the gorgeous islands of Greece.
MEDITERRANEAN MEMORIES
If you're looking to explore the hidden wonders of the Mediterranean , set off for destinations further east of France. Whether you traipse through Croatian coastal cities like Dubrovnik and Split or admire the idylls of Greece's Mykonos and Santorini islands , you'll be en-amour-ed by the French influences throughout the Mediterranean.
SPEED INTO SPAIN
While you're on the hunt for delicious local treats, why not head west to Spain and taste tapas for yourself? Visit bustling Barcelona to marvellous Malaga and destinations beyond the Gibraltar Strait (namely, the Portuguese Coast) and stop off at Le Havre port – from there, you can soak in the Gothic grandeur and quaint cafes of Paris.
Residents of the French Riviera are relaxed and friendly and won't mind if your French isn't perfect, so don't be afraid to parle français ('speak French').
Life moves at a slower pace along the Côte d'Azur, and while you might think you can squeeze Eze, Monaco and Cannes into your six-hour cruise stop, you should prioritise quality over quantity.
Another delicious cuisine to explore in the south of France is North African, which you can taste in the shawarma shops off the Algerian and Moroccan communities of France's coastal cities.
CUISINE CULINARY WORLDS COLLIDE
Use your maritime adventure to savour France's best seafood, or sample hearty brasserie dishes in Paris. Or take advantage of your proximity to Italy while in Southern France and sample Provencal takes on pizza and pasta.
CATCH THE FLAVOUR
There's no catch here – French fish is magnifique. Whether you choose a sumptuous tuna steak or enjoy bouillabaisse, France's world-famous seafood stew, a fish dish is always the right choice along the Côte d'Azur.
MEDITERRANEAN MIX
No time to visit Italy? No problem. Many of the best meals along France's southern coast are actually of Italian origin. Pop into a family-run spot in Provence for pizza margherita, the classic Neopolitan pie with basil, fresh tomato sauce and local mozzarella cheese, or pasta with fresh-caught local prawns.
A RAW EXPERIENCE
Take a more adventurous approach to eating and try boeuf tartare, high-quality beef served raw and held together by egg yolk (also raw). If you're comfortable venturing on the uncooked side of the culinary spectrum, you'll discover one of the treasures of French cuisine, served simply with mustard, pickles and crusty bread or crackers to let the natural flavours of the beef shine.

Prepare to literally be blown away by Toulon, the capital of Provence, as the climate is distinctive for more than 30 diverse types of wind that blow in from all points, and figuratively by the many charms of this ancient port. In Toulon you can find specialties like lavender, wine, and fine herbs at the Cours Lafayette , or head to boulevard Amiral Vence with your lover and jump on the cable car which will lead you almost 2,000 feet up to the top of Mont Faron and visit the Mémorial du débarquement et de la libération de Provence.
MAY 7 NICE, FRANCE
Day 4 | nice, france.
With streets full of colorful buildings, palm-lined boulevards, and a harbor of turquoise blue, you may feel like you’ve somehow stepped into a living painting when you arrive in Nice. Often called “The Queen of the Riviera,” the epitome of Nice’s famous joie de vivre can be found in full swing on the Promenade des Anglais , which features stunning views, especially at sunset.
Don’t miss the opulent Hôtel Negresco , where royalty and high society have held court since 1912, or the art deco Palais de la Méditerranée . To visit the Cathédrale Saine-Réparate , head for the heart of the city to the picturesque Place Rosetti . After dark, the square becomes an open air-dance club complete with dramatic lighting that casts a magical glow on the ancient cobblestones.
From Nice you can take a quick trip by train to Monaco, the city with a reputation that’s far bigger than its mere 0.76 square miles. It’s the kind of place where professional athletes, royals, socialites, and Bond villains (or the actors who play them) rub elbows while searching for elusive lady luck. Come prepared to be amazed by the opulence, by the breathtaking beautiful surroundings, and for some of the finest people watching this side of the seas.
MAY 8 PORTOFINO, ITALY
Day 5 | portofino, italy.
This charming resort community is the perfect place to indulge in some well-deserved relaxation. Be sure to bring your walking shoes since there’s a gorgeous walking district where you can see glamorous old hotels and dramatic forts overlooking the sea. Don’t miss Castello di Santa Margherita , a castle built in 1550 by the Republic of Genoa as a defense against pirate attacks. The main city square, Piazza Mazzini , is lined with colorful palaces just begging to be Instagrammed.
MAY 9 LIVORNO, ITALY
Day 6 | livorno, italy.
Florence is the sublime birthplace of the Renaissance, bursting with elegant squares, imposing palaces, magnificent churches, and museums with such an abundance of riches that it could make an art lover weep for joy. The list of illustrious names connected with this city include Botticelli, Dante, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo. For many years, the city was ruled by the powerful Medici family, patrons of the arts and bankers to the papacy, whose line included six kings and, allegedly, four popes.
MAY 10 AT SEA
Day 7 | at sea.
Spend the day sailing in style aboard your boutique hotel at sea. Indulge in a treatment at Sanctum Spa, stay ship shape with a class in the fitness center, join us poolside for some erotic adult entertainment, or lounge the day away on our sunny clothing-optional pool deck.
In the evening, savor inspired Italian cuisine at Aqualina, or relish in a classic steakhouse experience at Prime C. Plus, you’ll find plenty of sensually seductive evening entertainment, from thrilling shows to intimate performances.
MAY 11 CIVITAVECCHIA (ROME), ITALY
Day 8 | civitavecchia (rome), italy.
Rome has something special to offer to all visitors, no matter their interests and tastes. Whether you daydream about fighting with gladiators in the Coliseum , debating with togaed senators in the Forum , tossing a coin in a fabled fountain, or being awestruck by the magnificence of St. Peter’s Basilica and Michelangelo’s masterpieces, Rome seems to live up to its sobriquet as the Eternal City.
When you need sustenance, today’s Rome will provide delizioso pasta e vino . Or perhaps you draw strength from a little retail therapy—the Italians are also renowned for their sense of style.
