That is what life is like aboard The World, the largest private residential ship on the planet at 644 feet. Since our launch in 2002, The World has continuously circumnavigated the globe, spending extensive time in the most exotic and well-traveled ports, allowing Residents to wake up in a new destination every few days, exploring with depth they had never before thought possible. It's a lifestyle we are truly grateful to live each day.

With only 165 individual Homes, The World’s Residents enjoy one of the most exclusive lifestyles imaginable. Not only do Residents own their individual Residences, but collectively, they own the ship, ensuring that the experiences - both onboard and off - are far beyond current luxury travel standards.

But what this community shares with one another goes far beyond ownership. Each Resident has an endless thirst for knowledge, adventure and of course, travel.

This thirst is not only satisfied by the Ship’s itineraries, which every Resident has a voice in creating each year, but also by the special, in-depth expeditions and unique Enrichment Program. The Program brings onboard expert guides and lecturers in various fields of expertise - diving, wine tasting, world cultures - to prepare us for each port we visit, and beyond.

As time passes, neighbors become travel companions and travel companions become good friends. Residents offer one another new ways to experience the many destinations we sail to. But above all, they offer each other comfort, good company, and lots of laughter.

Only a handful of residences are available for sale each year. You are able be on the information list of potential buyers by recommendation only. Contact us for more details.

A $20 million penthouse on The World, a luxury cruise ship, has listed for sale

Travelling the world without ever having to leave home – a penthouse is for sale on The World, one of the most unusual neighbourhoods on earth aboard the biggest privately-owned luxury residential cruise ship at sea.

After 14 years, the owner of the three-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom home, who wishes to remain anonymous, is selling up – but only to reorganise his holdings into several smaller apartments on the ship for his grown-up family.

“The ship itself is a phenomenon but the community too is amazing; a group of people of all nationalities and age groups who all share a common passion for travel and adventure,” he says.

The World will be visiting Australia in February and March 2020, with the opportunity to inspect the penthouse on deck 11. Photo: Supplied

“I’ve done the yacht thing and owned my own aircraft but I wouldn’t replace a home on this ship with anything. It’s a home on the most unique property in the world and you can’t put a price on the kind of experiences it offers. It’s the ultimate trophy property in the world right now.”

Being offered for around US$14 million ($20.5 million), with annual maintenance fees of up to US$1.4 million ($2.05 million), the newly-renovated apartment is on deck 11 of the 12-level The World, overlooking the bow. With the ship cruising around Australia over February and March this year, it presents the ideal opportunity for inspections.

The Norwegian-built yacht launched in 2002 with 165 apartments, ranging from studios to three-beds, and circumnavigates the globe every two to three years with the average occupancy at any one time between 150 and 200 residents, and 280 staff.

Most of the owners – who have to possess at least US$10 million ($14.6 million) in assets and undergo background checks – spend a total of three to six months onboard, dividing their time between the condo cruiser and their other land-based homes elsewhere, according to business and family commitments and the voyage itinerary.

Some, however, stay most of the year-round and, with six restaurants on board, six bars and lounges, a fitness centre, swimming pools, spa, a full-size tennis court, putting greens, golf simulator, library, cinema, games rooms, deli, medical centre, florist and chapel, there’s little reason to leave at any of 2020’s 100 ports of call.

“To have a private dwelling at sea and to be able to travel without the congestion of ports and airports is simply extraordinary,” he says. “The crew make you feel at home, we have friends to stay and we undertake incredible expeditions as the ship is small enough to visit many places that larger vessels can’t.

“We also have lectures about the places we’re visiting and invite Nobel Peace Prize-winners on board to talk to us. It’s a great way to travel and to live.”

The home for sale has two interconnecting living areas, a hallway with a waterjet-cut marble Arabesque floor, floor-to-ceiling sliding doors to a veranda that wraps around the bow, a Macassar ebony bar and a faux fireplace surrounded by black and grey marble. There’s also a media room and state-of-the-art kitchen.

Sydney health and fitness professional Shannon Cleary lived on board for 18 months in 2011-12 and remembers it as an amazing experience. “You can’t fathom the decadence, the luxury, and the attention to detail of the service,” she says.

“The ship has that wow factor, but living and travelling, it’s like you’re living in wow every day.”

MS The World ship has a total of 165x Residences ranging in types from Studios to 3-Bedroom Penthouses and 6-Bedroom Penthouse Suite (for up to 12 passengers). All staterooms have been sold, but there are a number of Residences which are available for resale and some for rental.

There are also additional annual maintenance fees based on apartments' square footage. The cruise ship provides 40x studios, 19x 1-Bedroom and 2-Bedroom Studio Apartments, 106x 2-Bedroom and 3-Bedroom Apartments, 88x Suites. Prices vary and are based on size, deck location, decor, market conditions.

MS The World cruise ship cabin (balcony apartment)

Four of the world's most renowned interior design companies have been contracted to shape styles and design The World ship's 2- and 3-bedroom apartments and public rooms. Names list includes Nina Campbell (UK), Juan Pablo Molyneux (JP Molyneux Studio), Di Pilla (TMT Design), Yran & Storbraaten (maritime design).

Cabins prices (apartment cost, rentals, fees)

First of all, this is a modern big-sized cruise liner you can actually live on. Celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Madonna, for example, own suites on the vessel. So if you can afford the below apartment prices, you'll buy yourself the pleasure to enjoy a celebrity company - once and awhile. Apartments sizes vary from 1350 ft2 (125 m2) to 3000 ft2 (280 m2) "cruise ship mansions".

MS The World cruise ship cabin (window apartment)

Short-term rentals - you can rent some of MS The World's apartments (depending on category) for between ~USD 550 Studio (per person per night, min for 5 days) and ~USD 20,000 (Suite rentals, per month). Some Ocean Residences are also available for rent at ~USD 2100 a day. Discounts are available for repeat customers.

Future apartment owners on The World should also know that ship service fees (depending on the property) start from USD 60,000 and go up to USD 300,000 a year. These fees cover onboard service staff/crew, fuel, maintenance (including drydocking ), port charges, food and beverages. USD 8 million is the entry fee. This amount of money buys you a lease expiring in the distant 2052. As to the maintenance fees mentioned above - they are ~5-6% of the Apartment's sale price. As to the ship's occupancy - it rarely goes above 200 passengers (owners and their guests).

Next table shows ResidenSea brochure (source) pricing on apartments for sale in 2016-2018 and the property's annual maintenance fee.

Nest are shown rental prices (per night in USD, rates 2018) for:

  • Studio (sized 290-330 ft2 / 27-31 m2) - $1850
  • Studio (sized 330-335 ft2 / 31 m2) - $1800
  • Studio (sized 620-845 ft2 / 58-79 m2) - $2400
  • 1-bedroom apartment (sized 580-675 ft2 / 54-63 m2) - $2,200
  • 2-bedroom apartment (sized 870-1010 ft2 / 81-94 m2) - $2,800
  • 2-bedroom apartment (sized 1105 ft2 / 103 m2) - $3100
  • 2-bedroom apartment (sized 1135-1390 ft2 / 105-129 m2) - $3300
  • Penthouse Suite (sized 2470-3240 ft2 / 229-301 m2) - $6,100

Keep in mind that the owners actually purchase a property with a finite lifetime (the projected lifespan for passenger ships is between 30-40 years) and eventually, this vessel will be dismantled ( scrapped ). This means that The World ship's apartments are in reality leased for 30-40 years.

The ResidenSea company has the policy of not revealing who the clients/buyers are, but they assure that MS The World doesn't have residents with criminal records. Latest news confirms that all the ship's Studios and 3-Bedroom apartments are sold out. But there's always a chance some owner to decide to sell, right? And to sweeten the deal, they advertise that you can enjoy on The World ship - for absolutely free - Spa treatments at "Clinique La Prairie", to shop at the Graff's Boutique or to leisurely play at the ship's Mini-Golf Course. If you are a prospective buyer, you also must submit a list of your assets, which will be duly verified by the ResidenSea's accountants and lawyers.

Live at Sea With These 5 New Residential Ships

  • December 26, 2021

the world cruise ship residences for sale

Living at sea might have been an unattainable dream for many just some months ago. But with five new players entering the market, it may be high time for the nomads to start weighing their options.

Cruise Industry News has gathered everything we know about the residence-at-sea projects set to come to fruition soon.

MV Narrative Operator: Storylines Delivery Target: 2024 Capacity: 547 residences

After first planning to purchase a second-hand cruise ship, Storylines decided to construct a purpose-built residential ship in the end. The new vessel – called the MV Narrative – was ordered in 2021 and is being built at the Brodosplit shipyard in Croatia.

The ship features fully furnished residences ranging from 237 sq. ft. to 2411 sq. ft., priced between $300,000 and over $8 million for a premium two-level penthouse suite. The MV Narrative is set to enter service in 2024.

According to Storylines, the owners and invited guests will have the opportunity to live a “sustainable life of luxury and freedom at sea.” Features include waterfront marina, microbrewery, art studio, hydroponic gardens and more.

Positioned as “the greenest ship in the market,” the MV Narrative will use LNG fuel along with innovative reusable energy technologies and energy storage and recovery systems.

Dark Island Operator: Clydebuilt Delivery Target: 2025 Capacity: 101 residential suites

The Dark Island is ready for production at the River Clyde in Scotland, aiming to start operations in 2025. The vessel will be run by the family-owned Clydebuilt and feature 101 residential suites.

The ship’s suites span over eight decks and are now on sale, with prices varying between 8 million and 110 million British pounds.

Each accommodation has its own cooking facilities, but the ship also boasts three restaurants with chefs drawing inspiration from Scotland’s classic dishes and regions.

The Dark Island also has a spa, a salon where manicures and pedicures can be done, a hydrotherapy pool, a fitness and wellbeing center, and more.

Njord Operator: Ocean Residences Delivery Target: 2025 Capacity: 117 residences

The M/Y Njord – which was ordered in 2021 – is set to enter service in 2025. The 289-meter residential yacht will feature 117 residences once it’s constructed at its shipyard, Meyer Werft.

According to the ship’s operator Ocean Residences, the Njord is designed to meet “the strictest environmental regulations,” both at delivery and in the future.

The vessel will be powered by dual-fuel engines, with tank capacity for marine gas oil and LNG, batteries for hybridization, heat recovery systems and advanced power management systems.

Blue World   Operator: Blue World Voyages Built: TBD Capacity: 40 private residences

Blue World Voyages is planning a hybrid ship concept, with owner residences and passengers. First announced in 2019, the brand was said to be eyeing a second-hand cruise ship to introduce its product.

Original plans called for a 2021 service launch, with seven-day voyages in the Mediterranean targeted at those with an active lifestyle. Activities ranged from golf to snorkeling and kayaking.

The company’s ship would feature 425 berths, offering 200 standard staterooms, 25 single rooms and two upper decks of residences for a total of 40 apartments. The ship would also offer a full deck dedicated to spa procedures and wellness and another deck for sports and fitness.

Somnio Operator: TBD Built: 2024 Capacity: 39 apartments

The Somnio was designed by Tillberg Design of Sweden as a luxury residential yacht. The project is overseen by Captain Erik Bredhe and features 39 onboard apartments with amenities.

The Somnio – described as a yacht liner – is set to enter service in 2024 and will boast a 10,000-bottle wine cellar, restaurants and bars, in addition to an onboard beach club with water sports.

The vessel will also be built with the highest future hygiene and safety requirements in mind, and the owners say that they will have access to “world-class healthcare and medical services.”

The 39 apartments are already on sale, with the procurement happening strictly through a system of invitation or referral.

You Can Now Buy a Vacation Home on a Cruise Ship Sailing Around the World

Your life can be an endless cruise.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

For most people, sailing the world is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But for a few lucky travelers, an endless journey circumnavigating the globe could be a reality.

When Storylines' first residential cruise ship launches in 2024, it will feature 547 fully furnished residences available for purchase to globe trotters who would like to live, work, and play while exploring the world. Most of the one-to-four-bedroom homes, ranging from 237 to 1,970 square feet, feature balconies and can be customized in a coastal or contemporary style. While the onboard residences are in the $1 million to $8 million range, there are also a number of homes available for as little as $600,000 on a 24-year lease basis.

And just like with all high-end cruise ships, the 741-foot long, 98-foot wide MV Narrative will feature many amenities keeping homeowners busy and entertained.

Three pools with sundecks will ensure guests can soak up plenty of Vitamin D, while an outdoor running track, gym, yoga studio, and golf simulators will cater to sports and workout enthusiasts. Since wellness is a central part of the experience and the community's values, the onboard medical clinic will offer a list of wellness services, including weight loss, anti-aging, immune therapies, detox treatments, and nutrition planning. The ship even has a pet exercise area so four-legged passengers can stay active and healthy, too.

And with 20 dining options and bars, foodies can rest assured that their every culinary need and preference will be satisfied. The ship also has its own microbrewery and a solar-paneled, soil-less garden which will supply its eateries with fresh ingredients and craft beer. A zero-waste farmers market will also be available, offering local products. Other fun amenities aboard include a library, a marina with watercraft access, a movie theater, an art studio, and a bowling alley. The Narrative has been built with sustainability in mind. The ship runs on liquid gas, which is more eco-friendly than conventional fuels.

"Many people love global travel experiences but they don't love the logistics, planning, air travel, jet lag, and living out of a suitcase. Storylines takes the hassle out of international travel so that people can focus on exploring, adventures and cultural experiences. At the end of a long day discovering a new exotic location, they can come home to friends and familiar surroundings and sleep in their own bed," Storylines co-founder, Shannon Lee, wrote in an email.

Of course, being part of a cruise community is mainly about travel and experiencing the world. The ship's three-year voyage, beginning in 2024, includes all six continents. Residents will have several days to explore each destination and fully immerse themselves in the local culture.

"Storylines attracts people who actively get involved in local communities and enjoy world cultures. We like to say 'exotic destinations become your afternoon strolls' because the overall experience is really about exploring the world while still having all the comforts of home," added Lee.

And on this ship, the concept of exploring the world from the comfort of your home just hits different.

A new residential cruise ship will let travelers live at sea while it sails around the world every 3 1/2 years — take a look at its condos starting at $100,000

  • Villa Vie Residences says its  residential cruise ship  will travel the world every 3 ½ years from May 2024.
  • Travelers can buy a cabin starting at $100,000 or travel on segments of the itinerary.
  • Villa Vie's CEO says the company will close on a ship by the end of this year.

Insider Today

A new residential cruise ship startup has plans to begin sailing around the world in May 2024. But unlike the only one currently in operation (a luxury concept with multimillion-dollar condos), cabins on Villa Vie Residences' future ship start at $100,000 .

Over the past year, condominium-at-sea concepts have flooded the market. Relatively new companies such as Victoria Cruises Line and Life at Sea Cruises say they'll give travelers the chance to spend years at sea sailing and living on refurbished ships. Both of those, however, have faced shake-ups such as postponements or a change in vessels .

Storylines is taking a different approach by building its own residential ship, though the company has had to delay its sail date as well.

As of now, The World is the only company like this in operation.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

And it's been operating for the past 20 years. But good luck purchasing a room: Ten to 12 of its luxury condos go on sale annually, each costing $2 million to $15 million.

But if all goes to Villa Vie’s plan, the floating-condo industry could get its next competitor on May 15, 2024, when the startup's ship begins its global journey from Southampton, England.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

Villa Vie says that from there its vessel will embark on a 3 ½-year circumnavigation of the globe , stopping at 425 ports in 147 countries on its first go-around.

The itinerary includes travelers spending 87 days in Northern Europe, 105 days in North America, 68 days in Africa, and 76 days in South Asia.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

There'll also be multiday stops at some ports, including a 12-day dry dock scheduled in Singapore, the company's brochure says.

And there’s no need to purchase a cabin just to join this trip — travelers can instead book 'pay-as-you-go' segments from 35 to 120 days.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

These start at $4,360 for the final 35-day transatlantic crossing from Barcelona, Spain, to West Palm Beach, Florida.

Cruise giants such as Royal Caribbean also sell segments of their world cruises .

But for those who want to buy a residence, 15% of the ship’s 630 cabins are available to purchase.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

Prices range from $100,000 for an interior stateroom to $250,000 for one with a balcony. But this doesn't include monthly fees, which start at $3,500 for a double-occupancy interior stateroom.

It doesn't have to be a lifelong commitment — these residences can be leased or sold.

Irina Strembitsky, the startup’s director of sales, says there'll be about 800 to 900 guests on board at any given time.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

The company has seen more than 50 buyers since sales launched in mid-September, according to a sales report viewed by Insider.

Both short-term itinerary and cabin buyers must secure their spot with a 10% refundable deposit.

On board, the startup says, travelers will have typical world-cruise comforts such as educational programs, restaurants serving global cuisine, pools, and live entertainment.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

But unlike most cruise ships, Villa Vie says the vessel will also have a business center with a library and offices (WiFi will be included) and a "culinary arts center" with programs such as cooking classes.

For furry friends, the ship’s plans also include a "pet spa and resort."

the world cruise ship residences for sale

And for the fitness enthusiast, there's set to be a gym and golf simulator. And in case you injure yourself, the company says there'll be a medical center with doctors and nurses as well.

Say goodbye to mopping your floor and doing the laundry: Travelers on the ship won’t have to do the same chores they do on land.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

Several cruise lines have cut back on housekeeping services . On this residential ship, they're set to be offered weekly with an additional biweekly laundry service.

But like other residential cruise startups, there’s one problem: Villa Vie is 7 months from embarkation and doesn’t have a ship yet.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

Mikael Petterson, the startup's founder and CEO, told Insider that on October 6, the company submitted an offer to purchase a vessel that's in service "from an active operator of several cruise ships."

Due to processes that come with buying a cruise vessel, Petterson said he expected to close on the ship by the end of this year.

But the CEO said he'd “built more than enough time” into the schedule to account for hiccups.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

"We don't need as much of a runway that Life at Sea did," he said. "What we need is to make sure that we close on this ship, do it appropriately with proper funding, and not rely on customer deposits to do the trick."

Petterson, a cruise-startup consultant, has been a consistent figure in the residential-cruise industry. Before starting this company, he and Strembitsky worked with both Life at Sea Cruises and Storylines .

To fund this purchase, Villa Vie plans to use cash from private investors, loans, partners, and members of its Founders Club.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

It's a minimum $25,000 investment to join the latter, according to the company's brochure.

After the acquisition, the team is set to spend two to three weeks and several million dollars refreshing the vessel.

the world cruise ship residences for sale

This will include updates such as adding the golf simulator and a light update of the staterooms, the company says. Strembitsky said that because Villa Vie was looking to acquire a ship that was in operation and "good condition," this shouldn't be too big of a lift.

So, if all goes to plan, Villa Vie Residences could soon become a viable and significantly more affordable competitor to The World.

Carnival Puts Miami Headquarters Up for Sale as Florida Real Estate Soars

the world cruise ship residences for sale

Carnival Corp. has listed for sale its sprawling headquarters on the outskirts of Miami, seeking to cash in on real estate the cruise giant has owned for roughly three decades.

The company is now looking to downsize to about 300,000 square feet (27,871 square meters) of new office space in the Miami area, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named citing private discussions.

Carnival expects to remain at its current headquarters in the city of Doral for the next two years. The building dates back to the 1980s and encompasses 470,000 square feet. A spokesperson confirmed that the firm is “exploring options for new office facilities.”

Carnival hired brokerage Cushman & Wakefield Plc to handle the sale, a spokesperson for the brokerage confirmed, declining to add further details. The last recorded sale of the property dates back to 1983, when it was acquired for $16.6 million.

The decision to sell reflects a broader trend of companies reevaluating their office space needs in the post-pandemic era. While some tenants are looking to upgrade their facilities to entice employees back to the office, others are downsizing to reduce costs.

For Carnival, the sale is a chance to unlock a potential windfall from decades of real estate growth in Doral, where property values have soared alongside the area’s condo boom and the popularity of Donald Trump’s Blue Monster golf course. But it will also mean the company will be navigating a red-hot market to find new office space in the Miami region.

Currently, Carnival’s Doral headquarters is about 15 miles away on gridlocked highways from the port of Miami, where Carnival ships dock.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., which unlike Carnival is based inside the port, has recently broken ground on a new 10-story headquarters building in the vicinity. MSC Cruises SA, which is building a new cruise terminal at the port, said it will move its US headquarters to a downtown Miami office building near the port as well.

Carnival’s move to upgrade its headquarters underscores how well the cruise industry has done in recent years. Carnival, one of the largest cruise companies in the world, has seen bookings bounce back to a record since the pandemic. The company has 120,000 employees globally and serves about 13 million cruise vacationers per year.

Frank Bruni

Republicans are fleeing the stench of a rotten congress.

An illustration depicting the Capitol building with its dome ajar, as if on a hinge, and a ladder poking out of it. The background is orange.

By Frank Bruni

Mr. Bruni is a contributing Opinion writer who was on the staff of The Times for more than 25 years.

When it comes to Donald Trump, House Republicans do a convincing pantomime of love. Many of them chirpily parrot his lies. Most of them merrily launder his misdeeds. They grovel for his favor, gush about getting his endorsement and speak and vote in line with his desires.

They’re half partisan, half courtesan.

But there’s heartache underneath. Misery, even. That’s the truth of the Trump era, and that’s the moral of the 2024 exodus from Congress.

More than two dozen House Republicans, along with more than two dozen House Democrats, have headed or are headed for the exits , but the largeness of those numbers — which track with those in other election years over the past decade — doesn’t tell the story. What matters is who those Republicans are, the disgust in their goodbyes, their palpable sense of defeat and how it contradicts the fact that they have been in the majority in the chamber since early 2023.

In power, they have found themselves close to powerless. That’s the hellish paradox of their surrender to Trump.

For many of them individually, his blessing is the best or only way to maintain support among their Republican constituents back home and win election. But for the lot of them, he’s a curse, because he has contributed mightily to a degrading and dysfunctional culture on Capitol Hill.

Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz and other banes of a serious, half-serious or even quarter-serious Republican lawmaker’s existence are Trump’s spiritual spawn. He begot their antics. He nurtured their rage. If being a House Republican has become unbearable, he bears critical responsibility for that.

The Trump giveth, and the Trump taketh away.

Five of the Republicans who decided to escape the Hill’s poisonous climate didn’t or won’t even wait until the end of this year and finish out their terms. They can’t flee fast enough.

Among them is Representative Ken Buck, a Colorado Republican. “This place just keeps going downhill,” he told reporters, “and I don’t need to spend my time here.” You say that kind of thing about a rundown bar where there’s no eradicating the stench of spilled beer. He was talking about a broken-down institution that reeks of abandoned principles.

It’s losing longtime Republican leaders estranged from and spurned by greener, meaner MAGA hellions. Kevin McCarthy, who was the House speaker for less than 10 months last year, has already resigned and is gone. Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, who served as a temporary speaker after McCarthy, won’t seek re-election.

They carry the scars of a scabrous 2023. Such was the Republican infighting that McCarthy’s ascent to House speaker required an unprecedented 15 roll call votes — and then he was ousted after the third-shortest speakership in history.

In a profoundly depressing analysis in The Times, Carl Hulse called 2023 “one of the most tumultuous and unproductive legislative years in recent memory.” Vital bills languished. Bedlam prevailed. Representative Tim Burchett, a Tennessee Republican, said that McCarthy had purposely elbowed him in the kidney. “And then I chased after him,” he proudly reported. Zygotes behave more maturely.

“It was historical and hysterical,” Representative Steve Womack, an Arkansas Republican, said at the time. McHenry called it “a very actively stupid political environment.”

Now, its fruits. “Four G.O.P. committee chairs are leaving,” Marianna Sotomayor wrote in a roll call of the Republican refugees in The Washington Post last weekend. “Eight lawmakers are retiring from the coveted Energy and Commerce Committee, and eight subcommittee chairs are leaving.”

Sotomayor quoted Buck as saying: “The populist wave has eroded the conservative values that I had when I came to this place. Now, we’re impeaching people like it’s some kind of carnival, and the Constitution is just a thing of the past to the very same people who were tea party patriots 10 to 12 years ago.”

A carnival ethos. Contempt for the Constitution. Call to mind any former president you know?

In terms of the Republican Party’s devolution over the past dozen years, there can be genuine debate: Which came first, the tempest or the Trump? But it’s indisputable that he worsened the weather. Perhaps he swept in on storm clouds already formed. But only then came the lightning.

And now they seek shelter — McCarthy, McHenry, Buck and so many more. They weren’t built for the apocalypse. They should have done more to head it off.

For the Love of Sentences

The writer Gary Shteyngart spent a week on the Icon of the Seas, billed as the biggest cruise ship ever, and his account in The Atlantic was a prose buffet from which many of you plucked morsels. “The ship makes no sense, vertically or horizontally,” he wrote. “It makes no sense on sea, or on land, or in outer space. It looks like a hodgepodge of domes and minarets, tubes and canopies, like Istanbul had it been designed by idiots.” Also: “There is no imposed order, no cogent thought, and, for those who do not harbor a totalitarian sense of gigantomania, no visual mercy.” (Thanks to Melissa Guensler of Fredericksburg, Texas, and Pam Vetter of Austin, Texas, among many others, for spotlighting Shteyngart’s article.)

In The Santa Barbara Independent, Zak Klobucher marveled at one of Bruce Springsteen’s live performances: “He carped so much diem that when he called on the audience, ‘Can you feel the spirit?’ Robin Williams showed up to ask him to take it down a notch.” (Mark Flannery, Fullerton, Calif.)

In The Star Tribune of Minneapolis, James Lileks described his attempt to use a snowblower as a slush blower: “I pushed it into the drift, and it was like trying to eat a thick, wet pillow with your dentures out.” (Marie McGeehan, St. Louis)

In The Financial Times, Anjana Ahuja questioned the potential of a new meat: “With half the U.K. population reporting anxiety about snakes and about one in 50 harboring a phobia, the idea of snakes as the new livestock of choice might not have legs.” (Lois Russell, Somerville, Mass.)

In The Times, Wesley Morris appraised Larry David: “I’ve never seen any actor with David’s grasp of how to play skepticism for laughs. Eyebrows as up-yanked drawbridge, forehead creases as lasagna of vexation. That rawboned voice of his soars, if not in octaves, then certainly with tickly, prickly dynamism.” (Carol Ball, Boston, and Annie Stamford, Philadelphia, among many others.) I was as taken with this bit of Wesley’s about “Curb Your Enthusiasm”: “It presents the American id at war with its puritanical superego. Sometimes Larry is the one. Sometimes he’s the other. The best episodes dare him to inhabit the two at once, heretic and Talmudist.”

Also in The Times, Kevin Roose gave thanks for Andres Freund, a Microsoft employee who might have prevented a major cyberattack: “In the cybersecurity world, a database engineer inadvertently finding a back door in a core Linux feature is a little like a bakery worker who smells a freshly baked loaf of bread, senses something is off and correctly deduces that someone has tampered with the entire global yeast supply.” (Paul Frame, Long Island City, N.Y., and Meg Smith, Old Saybrook, Conn., among others)

Ezra Dyer paid tribute to an automotive throwback, the Dodge Challenger Black Ghost: “It’s a stupid car, really, peak mouth-breather, screaming of wretched excess. But its analog mechanical brutality activates some primal lobe deep in our brains, the one that catalyzes noise into adrenaline. The final V-8 Challenger rolled off the line on Dec. 22 last year, another dinosaur obliterated by the E.V. asteroid.” (Gerry O’Brien, Goderich, Ontario)

And Christopher Kuo reported on a gang of museum robbers less polished than their serial heists suggest: “In court records and interviews, they come across as more 7-Eleven than Ocean’s Eleven.” (Gary Carter, Winston-Salem, N.C., and Miriam Bulmer, Mercer Island, Wash., among others)

In The London Review of Books, Michael Hofmann took pointed issue with some right-wing warriors: “It seems there is only one model for today’s ‘man of action,’ and that is shock and awe. Overwhelming force deployed suddenly and overwhelmingly. A theatrical performance with no audience as such, only a houseful of victims. The lions eat the circus and then tweet about it.” (William Wood, Edmonton, Alberta)

And in The Atlantic, David Frum remembered the death of Miranda, his daughter, in her early 30s: “For me, the thought of my own death has never been a distressing subject. We live, we love, we yield the stage to our children. I hoped that when the time arrived, I would have the chance for farewells. If that wish were granted, I could with total content ride the train to my final destination. It never occurred to me that one of my children might board the train first, pulling away as her parents wept on the platform.” (Howard Yegendorf, Ottawa)

What I’m Reading, Writing and Doing

My pooch partiality perhaps makes me the wrong judge, but I had a blast reading an advance copy of “ Dogland: Passion, Glory and Lots of Slobber at the Westminster Dog Show ,” by Tommy Tomlinson, which will be published on April 23. It’s more than a behind-the-curtain look at that storied competition. It examines the history, absurdities, vanities and poignancy of our relationships with dogs, at times making the case that they’ve trained us every bit as much as we’ve trained them.

As someone who has written the kinds of articles that fetishize and make much fuss about food, I appreciate counternarratives that puncture all that pretension. Peter C. Baker’s “ The Case Against ‘Good’ Coffee ,” published in The Times Magazine, does precisely that, with abundant style and sense.

If you aren’t aware of and haven’t been reading The Point, a relatively new blog in Times Opinion, please check it out . It’s a showcase of quick takes by columnists and other Opinion writers and editors. I recently contributed this post about some Democrats’ complaints that other Democrats are being unduly alarmist about the 2024 election.

I’m excited to be onstage with David Axelrod at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics at lunchtime on Friday, April 26, for a conversation about my new book, “The Age of Grievance,” that doubles as a live taping of his “Axe Files” podcast. Registration details here . I’ll discuss the book with Katie Couric at the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center in Manhattan on Wednesday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m. Details here . Other cities and events are listed here on my website.

On a Personal Note

There’s a riot outside my bedroom window.

Chirping. Trilling. Cawing. Squawking. I need a thesaurus to do a proper aural inventory. I need noise-canceling headphones to make it go away. But I don’t want to silence or muffle it; it’s an exquisite cacophony, a tapestry of sound that’s perfect, even though it’s all loose threads. I’m nestled in a noisy aviary.

And in a vivid garden. There’s a second riot outside the window, one of color: the pinkish blossoms of a tree whose pedigree I keep forgetting, the red and white flowers spread like frosting atop a hedge of azaleas, the purple fringes of my redbud trees. Early April is when spring struts the most flamboyantly here in my area of North Carolina. The Duke campus is positively Edenic.

And it’s scrambling my relationship with the seasons. I’ve always been an autumn guy — and, for the most part, still am. It’s hard to argue with those colors and with the delicious bite of the air in early November.

But now that I have a house and a yard with yellow daffodils that showed up like an advance guard more than a month ago, pink and red camellias that followed fast on their heels and a cherry tree that peaked for a few glorious mid-March days, I’m wondering if spring has the edge. There are no leaves to collect (though there is the green pollen spreading across my screened porch). No frigid hints of the winter to come.

And there are all these chattering birds! I know that they’re talking with one another, but I like to pretend they’re speaking to me. They’re telling me that amid all the ugliness these days, there’s ample beauty.

Some of the winners and losers in the 2024 federal budget

With a variety of fiscal and policy measures announced in the federal budget , here's a look at some of the winners and losers:

Winner: Small businesses

Carbon tax rebates for small businesses are coming, five years after consumers began receiving their share. The measure is "a big relief," says Dan Kelly of the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses, which represents the sector. The budget says as many as 600,000 small firms would be eligible for a share of $2.5 billion.

  • CTV News' special coverage of the federal budget begins 4 p.m. ET on CTVNews.ca, CTV News Channel and the CTV News app

Loser: tobacco industry

The federal government will collect an additional $4 per carton of 200 cigarettes starting Wednesday, on top of the $1.49 added on April 1 as part of an automatic inflation adjustment. For vaping products, singled out in the budget as a public-health issue affecting younger Canadians who have been "enticed by appealing marketing," vaping excise duty rates will increase by 12 per cent, or between 12 and 24 cents per typical vape pod. Together, the measures should generate about $1.7 billion in the next five years.

Winner (eventually): fintech companies

Long-promised details about a framework for open banking -- a system that allows consumers to easily access their financial data across multiple institutions, apps and services -- were revealed in Wednesday's budget, though the specifics are reserved for legislation to be tabled before the end of the year. It names the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada to oversee and enforce the system and sets six core elements for the framework.

The budget also sets aside $4.1 million over three years for the Finance Department to complete the policy work necessary to establish and maintain the oversight entity and framework. The financial sector will welcome any clarity on this file after years of seeing the can kicked down the road, but it's unclear what the implementation timeline will be.

  • What you need to know about the 2024 federal budget

Loser: Canadian pension funds

An increasingly loud debate has emerged about whether the country's largest pension funds should invest more of their capital in Canada. They say they already invest here and higher returns can be found abroad, while proponents of the move argue money should be spent to help improve productivity and business investment at home. The government says it will create a working group led by the finance minister and former Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz to explore ways to spur spending in Canada, but it doesn't appear to have a lot of teeth.

In the meantime, the government says it will require financial regulator OSFI to publish information about the investments of large federally regulated pension plans. That could see even higher scrutiny from climate change activists and interest groups hoping to sway investment decisions.

Winner: Cellphone and internet users

Wireless costs are too high, telecom industry watchers told MPs studying cellphone plans earlier this year, even as prices have been on the decline in recent years.

In the budget, the government says it will make it easier to renew or switch between cellphone plans, something advocates say makes it easier to get a better rate. It also will require carriers to provide some kind of self-service option, like an online portal, so that customers can more easily switch plans.

  • Federal budget 2024: How it impacts you

Loser: Entertainment lovers

Canadians have long complained about soaring ticket prices for concerts and sporting match tickets. Those prices are more exorbitant when tickets are purchased from resellers who gobble up seats using "bot" technology the second they go on sale, keeping them out of the hands of fans.

The budget says the federal government will work with provinces and territories to adopt ticket sales best practices that reduce unexpected charges during the buying process, crack down on fraudulent sellers and ensure Canadians get timely refunds when events are cancelled. However, it offers no plan with enforceable measures or deadlines to accomplish these feats, which could leave Canadians battling scalpers even longer.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 16, 2024.
