Saint Augustine: 'The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.'

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.

The quote by Saint Augustine, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page," beautifully encapsulates the idea that experiencing different cultures and exploring the world is essential for gaining a holistic understanding of life. In a straightforward interpretation, this quote suggests that simply staying in one's comfort zone and not venturing beyond familiar territory limits one's knowledge and perspective. It implies that to truly comprehend the vastness and diversity of the world, one must embrace the opportunity to travel and immerse themselves in various cultures. However, let us now delve into an unexpected philosophical concept to bring a unique perspective to the discussion. Consider the idea that not only does traveling enable us to read multiple pages of the world, but it also allows us to transcend the boundaries of the book entirely. Imagine that each new place visited is like turning a page, unveiling fresh insights and perspectives. As the pages of the book turn, we are not just reading stories but actively participating in the narrative, shaping our own experiences and understanding. This thought can be likened to the concept of living life as a multidimensional story, wherein each individual's unique experiences and interactions contribute to the narrative of the world. Just as a book unfolds with each turned page, life unfolds with every choice we make and every place we visit. By traveling, we expand our personal story, enriching not only ourselves but also the collective narrative of humanity.Contrasting this philosophical concept with the original interpretation of the quote, we find that both perspectives emphasize the significance of travel in broadening our horizons. While the straightforward understanding encourages exploration to gain knowledge, the unexpected concept transcends beyond the mere act of reading and calls for active participation in shaping our own stories.Together, these interpretations remind us of the transformative power of travel. It awakens our senses, exposes us to new ideas and perspectives, fosters empathy, and ultimately enriches our understanding of the world around us. We become active participants in the ongoing story, contributing our unique experiences and insights to the tapestry of human existence. Moreover, this philosophical concept highlights the interconnectedness of our individual narratives. Just as turning the pages of a book reveals a cohesive story, traveling and embracing new experiences unveil the interconnectedness of the world. The people we meet, the cultures we encounter, and the places we explore all have a role in shaping who we are and how we perceive the world. In conclusion, Saint Augustine's quote, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page," holds immense meaning and importance. It urges us to step out of our comfort zones, explore diverse cultures, and actively participate in shaping our own stories. By embracing the transformative power of travel, we not only read multiple pages of the world but also become active participants in the interconnected narrative of humanity. So, let us set out on our journeys, turn the pages of life, and contribute to the ever-evolving story of the world.

The World Is Book And Those Who Do Not Travel…

those who don't travel quote

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”

Travelling is about seeing new places and having new experiences. Learning about yourself and others. You can’t do that as efficiently when you stay in one place!

The Quote Source

This travel quote comes from Saint Augustine, also known as Augustine of Hippo. He was an early christian theologist and philosopher. His writings greatly influenced western christianity and philosophy.

In the Catholic Church and Anglican Communion he is a Saint, a Doctor of the Church (doctor meaning teacher) and the patron of the Augustians. Some Protestant see him as one of the theological fathers due to his teachings on divine grace and salvation. He is the patron saint of theologians, printers and brewers.

What This Travel Quote Means To Me

For me, this travel quote means that those that do not travel do not see and experience much in their lives. When you travel you see so many different cultures, try new experiences, taste new dishes and do things you never thought you could. The ability to travel is there for everyone, all you need to do is turn the page.

If you stay in one place all your life, you never ‘turn a page’. You read and re-read the same thing. You don’t experience new and exciting things. Travelling allows you to ‘read page after page’ fully immersing yourself in ‘the book’ that is life.

So even if you only travel once in your life, or only go to one or two destinations, at least you have not been stuck on that one page. Even if you only travel your own country, at least you have fully read a chapter. It doesn’t matter how far you travel or how often, as long as you get off that first page from time to time!

I feel like I've seen this list before?  If not then I've definitely read most of the quotes before.  I'm such a sucker for quotes, I even have a quote app on my phone.

There’s lots of travel quote lists out there, these are just my favorite ones ;)

I've not come across a lot of these quotes before like Elle has. My favourite one from the list is "5. Do no follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. Ralph Waldo Emerson"

Oh Yea, that’s a good one :)

These are good quotes,  I like 6, 18, 34, 40 and 42.

So glad you read and picked your favorites!

2 is my favorite and one that I live by.

I love these, especially 18 and 31. Also ha ha to number 16. I always think of Uncle Traveling Matt's song from Fraggle Rock as inspirational for travelers. "Every sunrise shows me more and more/ So much to explore/ Come and follow me", etc.

95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

• Mark Twain Travel Quotes

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime.
To do something, say something, see something, before anybody else — these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with which other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. Lifetimes of ecstasy crowded into a single moment.

It is the loveliest fleet of islands [ Hawaii ] that lies anchored in any ocean.
No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same.   For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

those who don't travel quote

Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless.   We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. — John Steinbeck
What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? – it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies. — Jack Kerouac
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. — J.A. Shedd

those who don't travel quote

It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? — Richard Aldington

I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. — Bill Bryson
The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home. — Freya Stark

When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill

• Anthony Bourdain Travel Quotes

If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about.   For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.

those who don't travel quote

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

those who don't travel quote

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

those who don't travel quote

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

those who don't travel quote

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

  • …the character of a man…

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page. –  saint augustine.

If you traveled to Bolivia, you could find out about their customs, including their brightly colored blankets and their hats.

If you traveled to Bolivia, you could find out about their customs, including their brightly colored blankets and their hats. Or you could read about it in a book or on the net.

What does that mean? This is an interesting way of making an analogy. One page of a book will only give you so much information. You will never know about what happens in the next chapter, much less at the end of the book. That is the fate of those who stay in one place, and never visit other places.

The flip side of that is the person who travels afar, and reads from the pages of each place that they visit. In this manner, they end up reading the whole book, page by page. And like a good mystery, reading a later chapter may just explain something read in an earlier chapter.

Note that if you just visit nearby communities with the exact same culture, you’re going to read the same page again that you have previously been reading. It is my belief that the quote is urging us to learn more about each-other, that we may better understand the whole of the book which is the world.

Why is learning about others important?    Beyond attempting to satisfy my nearly insatiable curiosity, there is a lot to learn from other cultures and viewpoints. Whether you believe their viewpoints or not, it may help you understand why others do what they do and the reasons they believe it is proper and correct to do them.

That can help bring greater understanding, and hopefully avoid some of the misunderstandings that have plagued mankind throughout history. If you are not familiar with the customs of others, how easily might you offer an unintended insult? There are cultures where certain things are done with particular hands, and offering someone your hand could be considered an insult.

Knowing more about others also allows you to consider their views and beliefs in the historical context of their corner of the world. Those who come from the frozen lands might have different views than those who grew up in the sun-scorched lands, right? But you won’t know if you don’t read from their page of the book.

Where can I apply this in my life? Well, the point of the travel is to broaden your mind, so any activity which does that would be a good place to start. You may not know it, but in the USA (and perhaps other places as well) there is a channel called “The Travel Channel” and it specializes in showing interesting places to see or visit.

I have seen interesting shows on all parts of the world, as well as the history of a people, and some of their best tourist destinations. If you get the channel, it’s a very low cost way of traveling and learning about others, their history, and a little about how they think.

There are plenty of other shows scattered across the TV dial which provide information on foreign destinations. There are plenty of resources on the TV, if you can find them, and find the time to watch them. Of course, the availability may vary from country to country.

The next stop might be the local library or book store. There you will find books from travelers past, historical references, as well as publications from other countries extolling their history, culture, and tourist sites. That is a lot to read, if you can make the time.

Another possibility is the internet. There are plenty of photo-based blogs or journals from trips around the world, with descriptions of the fun that was had, and the interesting people who they met. You might even get a little bit of culture or history in some of them, depending on what their personal interests were.

You might also be able to find and talk with local people who are from far away places. Most large towns in the US have associations dedicated to people from different countries. I am familiar with Sons of Norway , as that is where my Grandfather ( morfar ) was from. I imagine you could find individuals or groups from many parts of the world, if your town is large enough, or you ask enough people.

One last option that you could check out, before traveling yourself, is to look for places in your area where tourists come to visit. Talk to them, and as you answer their questions about you and your culture, you can ask them the same about yours. Language, as always, may cause difficulties, but I believe it is worth the effort, even if the communication is a bit broken.

Finally, you could actually travel to distant places. That’s kind of pricey, but if you can afford it, you can go where you want, and find out what you desire about a country, a culture, or a people. Just be sure to take pictures and notes, so you can write your own travel journal or eve book, and help the next person who has questions.

And that is how the world becomes a safer and saner place. One person at a time, taking the time to understand their neighbors.

117 Best Travel Quotes in History

Travel quotes can best be described by Isaac D’Israeli, who noted that, “The wisdom of the wise, and the experience of ages, may be preserved by quotation.”

In no more than a sentence, a quote can capture much of spirit and desire which makes so many people want to go out and explore.

In addition to the best travel quotes below, I’ve also provided my own commentary on some of the quotes, offering my perspective after 11 years of traveling around the world. I hope you find these travel quotes inspiring and use them to help further traveling the world for the rest of your life!

1. “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Author Robert Louis Stevenson practiced what he preached. Born in Scotland , he died in Samoa and I had the honor of visiting his tomb. He traveled halfway around the world to live on an island that few people at the time, or even today, have even heard of.

2. “To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.” – Freya Stark

Frey Stark was a travel writer who traveled extensively in the Middle East and wrote several books about her adventures. She lived to the age of 100 and lived an incredible life. Only someone as well traveled as she can know the freedom and exhilaration of waking up someplace you have never been before.

3. “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for” – John A. Shedd

This quote comes from the 1928 book, “Salt from My Attic.” Fear is the single greatest thing stopping people from traveling more. Even if staying at home can reduce your risk, that doesn’t mean you should stay home. Humans are explorers and we have the spirit of exploration inside all of us. Staying at home your whole life makes you as useful as a ship that goes nowhere.

4. “The first condition of understanding a foreign country is to smell it.” – Rudyard Kipling

If you haven’t traveled before, you will not understand the truth of this quote. There are certain cities which have a unique smell and the moment I smell it, I know I am there. Bangkok has a unique smell. Many European cities do as well. It might come from many sources including street food, sewage, pollution, flowers, and people. Stories and images can easily be shared, but smells are something which is only for those who actually travel.

5. “Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou

When I hear people who complain or object to people in other countries, my first question is always “when were you last there?”. Almost always, their answer is “I’ve never been there”. It is easy to develop prejudices from afar, but it is difficult to do when you have met these people and have looked them in the eye.

6. “To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – Aldous Huxley

Aldous Huxley, the author of a Brave New World, knew that to truly understand something, you need to see it for yourself. All of the books and experts in the world are no substitute for actually going somewhere and seeing it for yourself.

7. “Travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of the experience.” – Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon was a philosopher who lived in the 15th and 16th Century in England . He was influential in the development of the Scientific Revolution. I’ve met people in their 20’s who have been traveling and I have met people in their 90s. Even though they might get different things out of travel, travel has something for everyone.

8. “The whole object of travel is not to set foot on foreign land; it is, at last, to set foot on one’s own country as a foreign land.” – G.K. Chesterton

After traveling around the world for 3 years, I returned to my home country and I was a very different experience. After seeing so many different places, it made my look at my own country in a totally different light. It is a perspective I never would have had if it wasn’t for travel.

9. “I like animals. I like natural history. The travel bit is not the important bit. The travel bit is what you have to do in order to go and look at animals.” – David Attenborough

At the end of the day, we travel to go places. Few people truly wander aimlessly. They travel to a destination and for a purpose. Airports and hotels are not the purposes of traveling. They are simply the means to the end of being able to see the rest of the world.

10. “Travel teaches toleration.” – Benjamin Disraeli

The ideas of acceptance and toleration are a common theme in travel quotations. Benjamin Disraeli was the British Prime Minister in the 19th Century who understood that the only way to tolerate other ideas and beliefs is to encounter them in the course of traveling. If you never go anywhere, it is hard to understand why other people behave and believe what they do.

11. “All travel has its advantages. If the passenger visits better countries, he may learn to improve his own. And if fortune carries him to worse, he may learn to enjoy it.” – Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson was an 18th Century British writer. I can confirm what he says first hand. I’ve seen small things in my travels, from light switches to toilets, which I’ve often wondered “why don’t we do that?” Humanity has advanced through the millennia by exchanging goods and most importantly, ideas. As good ideas flow from culture to culture, everyone’s life improves.

Inspirational Travel Quotes

12. “The journey not the arrival matters.” –T.S. Eliot

I’ve had plan journeys which have taken more than 2 days to get from place to place when you include all the flights and layovers. While I hate it at the time, I often look back on them and realize it was the difficulty in getting somewhere which made the end all that much better.

13. “The World is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.” – Saint Augustine

This is one of the popular and widely cited travel quotes in history. Saint Augustine lived in the 4th and 5th Century and lived in northern Africa and Italy. In an age when few people traveled more than a few kilometers from where they were born, Augustine saw more of the world than all but a few people during his life.

14. “Remember what Bilbo used to say: It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” – JRR Tolkien

In Tolkien’s Middle Earth universe, the Hobbits were quiet people who shunned any sort of travel. That made the characters of Bilbo and Frodo that much more heroic given the culture which they came from. Likewise, I came from a family which never traveled much. I never left North American until I was 29 years old and I never even saw salt water until I was 21! Just because you come from a place where people don’t travel much, doesn’t mean you have to as well.

15. “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

Proust was a French novelist in the 19th Century. He knew that the transformative changes which travel brings are the greatest gift of travel.

16. “A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.” – Lao Tzu

Even though Lao Tzu lived 2,500 years before me, I found out learned what he meant. Early in my travels, I learned to keep my plans flexible and to not keep too rigid of a schedule. You never know what you will encounter when you are on the road, and keeping things flexible allows you to discover things you might never have.

17. “The traveler sees what he sees, the tourist sees what he has come to see.” – G.K. Chesterton

Without getting into a discussion of tourists vs travelers, there is certainly a difference in how people can view the world when they travel. Many people will only see what they want to see and will try to make their experiences conform to their worldview. Others will be open to experiencing and learning what the world has to offer and shape their worldview around it.

18. “Experience, travel – these are as education in themselves” – Euripides

Euripides was an ancient Greek playwright. Even more than 2,000 years ago he knew that travel was the greatest school in the world. I have learned more in the years I have been traveling than I have in the rest of my life combined. Every day you are traveling, you are learning something new.

19. “We must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey.” – John Hope Franklin

John Hope Franklin was a 20th Century historian. Like Euripides, he knew that learning wasn’t confined to textbooks and classrooms.

20. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” – Robert Frost

This is a quote from a well-known poem, but most people don’t consider the travel implications of it. There are a small number of places which tend to get all of the visitors. A few major cities and resort areas get the vast majority of tourists. However, the best experiences I’ve had traveling were in places which hardly anyone ever visits.

21. “Of all possible subjects, travel is the most difficult for an artist, as it is the easiest for a journalist.” – W. H. Auden

Traveling is all about stories and storytelling. That is why so much of travel throughout history has been conveyed through writing. Travel photography is certainly a popular art form, you are usually capturing the place or destination, not the actual act of traveling.

22. “Voyage, travel, and change of place impart vigor” – Seneca

Writers often go somewhere new to get inspiration. Being somewhere new invigorates you in a way that being a home cannot. Even though I’ve been to over 130 countries, I still feel energized when I visit someplace new.

23. “You lose sight of things… and when you travel, everything balances out.” – Daranna Gidel

Daranna Gidel is an author whose novels often contain a travel component. She knew that when we travel, we tend to focus on what matters and lose the distractions which otherwise rob of us focus in our lives.

24. “I see my path, but I don’t know where it leads. Not knowing where I’m going is what inspires me to travel it.” – Rosalia de Castro

25. “I think that travel comes from some deep urge to see the world, like the urge that brings up a worm in an Irish bog to see the moon when it is full.” – Lord Dunsany

26. “The traveler was active; he went strenuously in search of people, of adventure, of experience. The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes “sight-seeing.” – Daniel J. Boorstin

27. “Why buy good luggage? You only use it when you travel.” – Yogi Berra

31. “What you’ve done becomes the judge of what you’re going to do – especially in other people’s minds. When you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. People don’t have your past to hold against you. No yesterdays on the road.” – William Least Heat Moon

32. “To get away from one’s working environment is, in a sense, to get away from one’s self; and this is often the chief advantage of travel and change.” – Charles Horton Cooley

39. “The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” – Anna Quindlen

Inspirational travel quotes to fill your sails.

There are key phrases you pass through when planning a trip. First, your wanderlust grows into a pang you can’t ignore. You put a budget together and decide it’s finally time to get going. You start planning, and excitement builds … but then, you look over the crest of your euphoria and see the downward plunge of the roller coaster pre-departure loose ends.

If you’re traveling to a different country and don’t speak the language, for example, you suddenly wonder, how well will you navigate signs? You also start asking, will your budget be enough? Have you thought of every plan B for missed flights, buses, and trains? Will you get all your work done before you leave?

The best travel quotes are the inspirational ones that remind you why you set sail in the first place. Choose your favorite quotes to use as a regular reminder of your “why.”

Henry Miller

Family travel quotes—from touching to “touché.”

Traveling with family conjures a special kind of magic. There are few people in the world who can annoy us so much, and yet we still adore them. That makes traveling together a seesaw of going nuts and having the time of our lives.

Your role on a family trip changes over time, from the backseat of the car on family trips as a kid to the adult who treats Mom and Dad to a flight somewhere fantastic. There are elements of family travel that never change, though. There’s always a moment when you’re begrudgingly awake but together at the crack of dawn. There are evenings when no one realizes it’s time to call it a night. There are photo-ops galore, and always more memories made than you could count.

Family travel quotes bottle that magic into something you can use in a card or letter , post on Instagram , or to keep in your head—just like the memories you make.

Hodding Carter

If you have kids and take vacations as a family, thinking about what each trip does for a young person’s frame of mind is a huge part of planning.

Rick Steves

This travel quote can be as meaningful for a child on a poster as it can be in a collage of memories of major adventures taken as an adult.

Rachel Hartman

This family travel quote works for families with small kids and for those traveling together as adults. What a sweet sentiment to put in a letter or card , don’t you think?

Bill Bryson

Put this into context. What activities that are “normal” at home change for you when you experience them away from home? What small details, when altered, make something feel totally new?

Fred Connors

Not every trip has to be exotic or flashy for Instagram. Often, it’s more important just to be together and have fun.

Donna Hedges

Having family to travel with is also the best reason to never say never to a dream trip or destination.

Travel quotes for couples with a shared sense of adventure.

Would you take a trip with a new partner to get to know one another? Would you take a trip to shake things up after years of daily routines? Maybe you already travel with your partner, and these famous citations are the travel love quotes that define your chemistry.

Whatever your case, traveling as a couple creates shared experiences that are unforgettable.

Go catch the sun with these superb travel quotes for couples. Pick your favorites to use as social media banners , Instagram posts , and cards or letters to family and friends. You’ll want to document the next adventure every way you can.

Ernest Hemingway

Travel is wonderful, but it’s also stressful. Travel is insightful for couples as well as individually, because your partner will see you in every state.

Samuel Johnson

This thought-provoking travel quote is also true of your romantic relationship. Use travel to anchor the reality of your relationship—because it will expose how things really are.

If you’re in a long-term relationship and haven’t felt excited about life at home recently, travel as a couple can act as a defibrillator of excitement.

Make this a rule for a romantic relationship, and the benefits will compound year-over-year.

A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh

When you meet that special someone and discover you both love travel, the future before you glows with exciting possibilities.

Anita Desai

Wherever you go together becomes part of your relationship, too. Reflect on that together after a trip as a couple.

Travel with a partner can be scary, but that can also mean it’s something to try.

Travel with friends quotes to caption photos, fill collages, and inspire more trips.

Road trips after graduation, backpacking to learn a language, and trips to find yourself alongside your best friend can become the stuff of legends.

It’s fun to jump on the bandwagon, too, when a friend is going somewhere and you want to tag along. Travel with friends is that easy—if you share a passion for adventure, taking a trip together gives you a sense of familiarity that contrasts in an unforgettable way with the new places you experience together.

Choose your favorites of these quotes about traveling with friends, and they can serve as the perfect captions for your Instagram stories along the way.

Shirley MacLaine

Travel with friends makes better friends of those you travel with, and offers the opportunity to make new friends in unlikely places, too.

Leonardo DiCaprio

One of the best parts about traveling with friends is the time together without other distractions.

Crestless Wave

Are you “that friend?” If you aren’t, you should become that friend’s co-pilot.

Turkish proverb

Another benefit to traveling with friends is having company during the pleasant and the tough parts of a trip. No airport layover feels quite as long with a good friend by your side.

Charles M. Schulz

Sometimes, it’s hardly about the destination. It’s about the time spent together and the memories made.

The next time any friend of yours says “travel,” you should say, “let’s go.” Put this on a poster and keep it in sight as a reminder.

Marcel Proust

Experiencing and discovering places through your friends’ eyes opens yours to new perspectives, too.

When you travel alone, you don’t have to wait for anyone. Use this travel quote on a poster to encourage you to take any adventure you dream up.

Not all who wander are lonely, either. Traveling alone is the favorite way to travel for some people.

David Mitchell

Consider journaling or writing letters to friends and family while you travel so you can capture things you learn about yourself along the way.

William Langewiesche

Some places and some trips we have to experience solo for them to form us the way they ought to.

Antoine de St. Exupery

Sometimes, that means traveling light on company, too.

Neale Donald Walsch

If traveling alone seems like a stretch for you, that’s more reason to do it.

Matthew Karsten

This is a great message to put on a flyer for any kind of travel offer, especially if it supports solo travelers.
