'Star Trek' app beams down to Virgin's TiVo service

Virgin Media has teamed up with CBS Action to launch a new interactive Star Trek app for its TiVo service, enabling fans to "boldly go" into the history of the classic sci-fi series.

The Star Trek app, available to download now on the TiVo platform, will offer every episode of Star Trek: The Digitally Remastered Original Series after it has aired on the CBS Action channel.

Additionally, the app features the 1970s Star Trek animated series, as well as interviews with the crew of the USS Enterprise, including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and George Takei.

TiVo users can watch a range of original Star Trek content, including footage of conventions such as Destination Star Trek London and Comic Con, along with rare documentaries, including A Captain's Log and Beyond The Frontier .

There is also a range of games and quizzes based on the famous TV series.

"For our TiVo customers we're taking them onboard for a whole new digital entertainment experience with this app," said Aleks Habdank, director of digital entertainment products at Virgin Media.

"We know how much our customers love their telly, and TiVo gives us the opportunity to take them on a journey of discovery and immerse them in a whole new world of content dedicated to their favourite shows.

"The app is a great addition to our line-up and it's been hugely rewarding to work with CBS Action to create special exclusive elements that only our customers can enjoy."

CBS Action chief programming officer Chris Sharp added: "This is the latest offering to fans from CBS Action; the home of iconic action series, which celebrates fandom and brings viewers closer to their favourite shows.

"Working with Virgin Media on this app has been an exciting journey and a great project, and the result is testament to the innovation of the fastest-growing entertainment portfolio in the UK.

"The launch gives fans of Star Trek access to even more content about the greatest television sci-fi series of all time. The app is already bursting with special extras and specially created content, and we're planning more updates later in the year."

The Star Trek app was designed and built by connected TV specialists Capablue using its Connected Lite solution.

That's very cool. Also cool is that you can purchase a video chat with them. But 2 minutes at $95....not for me. I think I still may watch the stream though.

It seems like they've changed their policy about not recording and posting the live streams. GalaxyCon Live: Frequently Asked Questions - GalaxyCon is More Than a Comic Con, We're a Festival of Fandom now says they do.

I will probably be skipping the Voyager and DS9 ones coming up but will probably watch July 5th: Star Trek Doctors Live Experience 2pm ET - GalaxyCon is More Than a Comic Con, We're a Festival of Fandom with four "doctors": Crusher, Phlox, Bashir and the EMH.

This isn't TNG but I'll be catching July 11th: William Shatner Live Experience 12 pm ET - GalaxyCon is More Than a Comic Con, We're a Festival of Fandom with "the Shat" today. And, yes, I've seem him on TV (WAY before Twitter existed) refer to himself as "one take Shat". And, MANY years later he said . The one w/the doctors was good. I posted a few comments about it at Star Trek virtual meets/watch alongs with actors or notable staff - My Nissan Leaf Forum .

Apparently Virtual Trek Con Summer 2020 began on July 15th. I only learned of it now.

Should be a great panel. I am taking a later lunch so I can watch today at 1EST

Star Trek Day mentions a bunch of panels on Sept 8th. I hope they'll be recorded as I need to work during the day and have some work meetings too. I stumbled across , as well.

tivo star trek

We are watching, live. The volume is a bit low... I'm not sure how much we'll be able to watch live. I'm hoping the panels will be available for on demand streaming, but I've not been able to find anything that mentions it.

The panels are on the CBS All Access YouTube channel.

Worlds collide on November 7th as William Shatner asks the questions in the Star Trek Q&A featuring stars of The Next Generation and Picard: Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner. Keen on audience interaction, Shatner will be taking questions from the virtual audience too. Click to expand...

From 5th Anniversary Open House Telebriefing 2020 (mystery) - Trekland , it looks like there will be a free virtual meet with 'Yesterday's Enterprise,' DS9 pilot 'Emissary' and 'Star Trek Generations' director David Carson on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7 pm Pacific / 10 pm Eastern.

Many people here are probably aware of the podcast, but I've been rewatching Voyager, and after each episode listening to The Delta Flyers with Robert Duncan McNeill & Garrett Wang. They watch an episode, then comment on it for a half hour or so.

For those missed the recent DS9 event, it's up at . They do pull them down and I have no idea how long that outfit leaves them up. A few more Trek related events are coming up at Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror . They finally got Shatner back to do more.

Join StarTrek.com For First Contact Day! - April 5th

For those who’ve watched/signed up for Galaxycon Live streams, TIL that the links to access the live stream may still work after the stream has ended. I missed the Shatner and Christopher Lloyd one yesterday but the link worked so was able to watch it. Before, I thought I had to wait for them to put it up on YouTube, which they sometimes don’t.

Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek , which first aired in 1966, drew inspiration from a century-old strand of technological utopianism in American science fiction. Writers like Looking Backward author Edward Bellamy had long envisioned improvements in communications and transportation as a way out of the economic injustices and blighted environments of the Industrial Revolution and a means toward perfecting society. Star Trek was nothing if not optimistic about technology; each week, the captain and crew trusted their lives to the miracles of modern science. True, there were hints of something darker (the uppity computer gods that Kirk disconnected, for instance), but in the end, Scotty and his engineers set things right.

Enterprise , which debuted this fall on UPN as the newest entry in the Star Trek franchise, has a fundamentally different vision. Its crew copes with bleeding-edge technologies: they don’t trust the transporter not to scramble their molecular data, the torpedoes miss their targets, the shields are on the fritz and the computers make crappy food. Starfleet is now a paternalistic bureaucracy. In short, the message is, we have seen the future and it doesn’t work.

Why the change? In the 1960s, faith in technological progress came easily, since most of the equipment was still in the hands of the guys in the white lab coats at NASA and MIT. And Starfleet embodied the idealism of John F. Kennedy’s New Frontier. Today we live, day in and day out, with technologies that have been shipped before being adequately debugged, which can shut themselves down or wipe our e-mail archives without notice. The newer the technology, the less likely it is to do what it promises, and as for getting reliable service, forget about it.

The MIT Media Laboratory still trots out the old technological utopian line with its promises of “things that think”-smart gadgets in the service of humanity. But a lot of the rest of the country fears machines with minds of their own. In our heart of hearts, we assume that any computer that can speak to our vacuum cleaners may also cut off our oxygen supply and shove our pets into the trash compactor when we aren’t looking. Twentieth-century literary luminaries James Thurber and Robert Benchley often depicted modern technology as a hostile intruder in our homes. At best, it’s a clumsy visitor: I can’t help but think of Rube Goldberg when I look at the toppling tower of black boxes (my VCR with its blinking lights, my CD player, my digital recorder, my digital cable box, my surround-sound speakers, various videotapes) next to my television set and alongside the various remotes.

It’s hard to take seriously the original Star Trek ’s technological utopian premise when contemporary devices-some inspired by the series itself, some even used to watch it-are totally unreliable. Improvements in communications technologies, indeed! There are at least three problems. First, the new machines are still buggy when they reach our hands. How many of us have to shout into our cell phones, which often look suspiciously like Star Trek ’s flip-open communicators, but with a much more limited calling area? Second, the companies that send us these gadgets never quite seem to know how to set up a customer service department equipped to deal with the bugs as they emerge. And then there are the design errors that make you wonder if the machines’ engineers had a Vulcan or Klingon customer in mind rather than a human being. Why are the media devices that we mostly use in darkened rooms always black? Why do they put all the useful information-the model number, serial number, even the phone number for customer service-on the bottom of the VCR?

Consider the sad tale of my TiVo digital video recorder, which I bought with the highest optimism that it would transform television as I knew it. I could preprogram it to tape all of my favorite shows; I could watch whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. In reality, it took Philips six months from the date of purchase to get me a workable unit, six months of dealing with 45-minute service calls, six months of performing silly rituals like wrapping my unit in tinfoil to see if the infrared detector was really working, six months of shipping defective units back and forth since they can’t seem to check them out before sending them to dissatisfied customers. I felt totally alone, since so many friends swore by their TiVos, until I visited the company’s help page and found that the largest single category of helpful advice was postings by customers who had received more than two nonworking units. And then, no sooner did I get my unit working than my cable company went digital. The two digital boxes have real difficulties communicating with each other and thus will randomly decide to record the wrong program.

TiVo’s other promise was that its intelligent agents would monitor my taste and surprise me with programs they think I want to see-which turned out to be a bit like having the cat drag home a dead mouse. This so-called smart agent, for example, never bothered to ask what languages I speak and so brings me Russian-language soap operas. If it only shipped with a Universal Translator, I’d be in great shape!

Star Trek app warps into TiVo space

Remastered original series, cartoons too.

Star Trek buffs who still haven't bought all the DVDs, HD DVDs and Blu-rays will be able to enjoy the original series on telly, courtesy of Virgin Media's CBS Action channel, which is not only showing the series again but has a tie-in app for Virgin's TiVo box.

Star Trek TiVo app

On show is the digitally remastered version of the series, the mid-2000s HD DVD-oriented update that replaced the old effects shots with CGI. Actually, it's a good piece of work that improves on the original without losing its style.

The accompanying app features cast interviews plus all 22 episodes of the Star Trek cartoon series and two "rare" documentaries: A Captain’s Log and Beyond the Frontier .

  • Alternate versions In 2006, CBS went back to the archives and created HD prints of every episode of the show. In addition to the new video transfer, they re-did all of the model shots and some matte paintings using CGI effects, and re-recorded the original theme song to clean it up. TIVO IS CALLING ALL SECRET AGENTS: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE TAKEOVER

The fuse is lit for the July 10 th release of one of the most anticipated movies of the year – MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE .  Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hawk as he and the Impossible Missions Force (IMF) face down a new slate of villains in a high-octane thriller.  It’s the latest installment in a franchise that has grossed over $3.5 billion at the box office. Let’s unmask the adventure, celebrate MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE with TiVo by stepping into the “Golden Age of Espionage.”

Rediscover the Original Mission Impossible Tom Cruise was just a youngster in Syracuse, NY when the MI legend started in 1966 as a spy action TV series created by producer Bruce Geller and starring an ensemble cast including Peter Graves, Barbara Bain, Martin Landau, Greg Morris and Peter Lupus. Legendary STAR TREK cast member Leonard Nimoy also joined for 2 seasons starting in 1969. MI came about after the massive success of the James Bond films spawned several spy-centric American TV series – 1964’s THE MAN FROM UNCLE and I SPY in 1965.  However, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, took espionage to the next level with intricate plots and a cast of specialists who came together to do the impossible.

A Spy Show with Legs MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ran from 1966 to 1971, airing 171 hour-long episodes which enjoyed high ratings. After its initial run, MI did so well in syndication that new episodes were commissioned, and it ran for two more seasons starting in 1988 – a testament to the show’s tightly written characters and intricate plots, as well as the skilled actors, writers and directors who kept the vision fresh for all those years.  The original episodes are still playing which means that somewhere, people are listening to the iconic MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE theme right now! Originally written by Argentinian composer, Lalo Schifrin, that title track has become synonymous with the series, lasting for almost 50 years – although it was given a 90s update by U2’s Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. for the first MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film in 1996.

From Small Screen to Big Screen After the success of their STAR TREK films, Paramount Pictures was eager to mine their TV vault and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE was an obvious choice – especially when megastar Tom Cruise got involved. The first film, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE , directed by Brian DePalma, was released in May 1996 and was a worldwide smash. Cruise has starred in and produced every film since. Original cast members Peter Graves and Martin Landau turned down roles in the reboot – Graves because his character became a double agent and Landau because he didn’t like the idea of a cameo.

Moving to the big screen meant bigger budgets and the filmmakers have taken full advantage, traveling the globe from the Czech Republic to the UAE, China, Norway, the U.S. and all over Europe. Adrenaline junkie Tom Cruise now had almost unlimited freedom to do any stunt he and his team could dream up, bringing a heightened sense of realism – and danger – to the globe-trotting series. (And no doubt giving the studio’s insurance agents heart palpitations!)

Impossible Stunts Every action film has stunts, but the MI series has turned them into an art form – especially with a hands-on star who insists on doing his own death-defying scenes. As Tom Cruise once told an interviewer, from a very early age he was diving into snowbanks and racing his bicycle over ditches – so obviously adventure is in his blood! It also helps that he’s a certified pilot, able to fly conventional planes and helicopters. So, with that in mind, let’s review some of the series biggest set pieces that have earned their place in movie history…

  • 1996’s MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE was highlighted by a giant exploding fish tank that almost swept away star Tom Cruise. Although taking place in a Prague restaurant, the actual stunt was filmed at Paramount Studios in Hollywood and used a reported 16 TONS of water!
  • MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 opens with Tom Cruise freeclimbing some serious cliffs in Utah. There was no stuntman – it was all Cruise who refused to shoot the scene with fake cliffs or even netting (although he did have a small safety cable). The risk was so high, director John Woo said he was too nervous to watch the scene as it was shot.
  • In MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – ROGUE NATION , Tom Cruise was filmed hanging onto the side of a cargo plane as it took off. Although he wore a safety harness, Cruise really DID hang onto the plane as it rose to 5,000 feet at over 200 miles per hour. If you think THAT took nerves of steel, Cruise had to shoot it 8 separate times before director Chris McQuarry felt he had what he needed!
  • “HALO” stands for “High Altitude, Low Opening” and that’s exactly what Tom Cruise did in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT . It took 106 separate jumps to get the famous high-altitude parachute jump from a plane in the can with Cruise falling 200MPH towards a skydiving cameraman. The script called for the scene to happen at dusk, giving the filmmakers just a 3-minute window each night to get their shot at 25,000 feet. Luckily their mega star had no fear of heights!
  • For MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL , Tom Cruise’s character climbs the sheer class side of the world’s tallest building, Dubai’s knife-like Burj Khalifa. To shoot the star 1,700 feet in the air required a special harness tethered to key points on the building. The filmmakers also had to break 18 windows to get their shots. Originally Dubai authorities gave permission to shoot on the exterior for ONE day… but who says no to Tom Cruise? They wound up shooting multiple days at the Burj where the glass would get up to 120 degrees during daylight hours.
  • MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART 1 . Paramount Pictures is billing it as “The Biggest Stunt in Cinema History.” We won’t spoil the surprise, but we can tell you that it involves a speeding motorcycle, a parachute and Tom Cruise! In fact, Cruise prepared for it by doing 500 training jumps.  Talk about commitment to his craft!

Mission Influence: A Global Impact In the 27 years since the first MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film burst onto movie screens, the series has had a major influence on action filmmaking. Tom Cruise, who executed his own stunts in every film has set a VERY high bar for other action stars who used to be content to shoot a closeup or two and let the stuntmen take over. Now, to keep up with Cruise they must step into the Danger Zone. The series’ use of practical effects rather than CGI has also pushed other filmmakers to up their game.  Take

the highly successful Jason Bourne series, which also features a complex hero and exotic locations. Star Matt Damon did many of his own stunts. The rock ‘em sock em car chases were done for real, not computer-generated.  The James Bond franchise used to have the field of breathtaking stunts all to itself, but the MI films have really stepped things up with world class set pieces that have forged new ground and given the 60-year-spy old series some serious competition.

The MI series also pushed filmmaking technology to its limits– from specialized drones used in the upcoming MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE DEAD RECKONING to custom camera rigs and a purpose-built helmet with recessed lighting to show Tom Cruise’s famous face in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT . Of course, this constant commitment to filmmaking excellence has won the series a legion of devoted fans all around the globe and it’s been cited as one of the very best series in the entire action film genre.  MI fans recently got a boost when director Christopher McQuarrie said that even more installments are in development – which means Ethan Hunt WILL be accepting future missions!

If you’ve come this far, there is only one last project left to complete before you are certified Mission Ready…

YOUR MISSION Before MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE hits theaters, get up to speed on the entire franchise by using your superhero device – your TiVo remote – to catch the previous films, now streaming on Paramount+. All you have to say is “Mission Impossible” and your TiVo remote’s award-winning voice control will drop you into the exciting and dangerous world of the MI series.  Want to binge them all?  That’s a mission that is definitely not impossible!

So, let us raise a glass to the daring IMF agents, their impossible missions, and the timeless spirit of adventure that continues to make Mission Impossible an unrivaled force in the world of espionage entertainment. As the famous catchphrase goes, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to immerse yourself in the captivating world of Mission Impossible and embrace the thrill of the impossible becoming possible This blog will self-destruct in five seconds…

Star Trek: The Original Series Cast & Character Guide

6 star trek planets controlled by computers, 25 years after the phantom menace, star wars is finally explaining why the jedi thought anakin was "too old".

  • 60 years ago, Gene Roddenberry took his first step towards bringing Star Trek to the screen with a successful meeting with NBC.
  • "The Cage" was chosen as the pilot for Star Trek, but two other potential storylines were also pitched to NBC.
  • While the show faced initial challenges, Star Trek: The Original Series went on to become a beloved science fiction classic.

It was 60 years ago this May that Gene Roddenberry and NBC embarked on the first step on their journey to bringing Star Trek: The Original Series to the screen. TOS premiered on NBC on September 8th, 1966, following a failed pilot, a radical overhaul, and a change of lead actor. Years before "The Man Trap" aired, Gene Roddenberry began shopping his Star Trek concept around various studios and networks, to no avail . In 1964, however, Roddenberry sold Star Trek to Lucille Ball's, Desilu production company, signing a three-year deal in April that year.

While Gene Roddenberry now had studio backing, he still needed a network partner to make his Star Trek dreams a reality . Despite Desilu's existing deal with CBS, Gene Roddenberry failed to sell his Star Trek Is... pitch document to the network, as they opted to go with Irwin Allen's Lost in Space instead. In early May, however, Gene Roddenberry had a successful meeting with NBC's Vice-President of Programming, Mort Werner, who asked him to provide him with three potential story ideas for a Star Trek pilot . Roddenberry and Werner's meeting was the first step on a long journey to get Star Trek on TV.

Star Trek: The Original Series features some of the most iconic characters in all of science fiction with the crew of the original USS Enterprise.

NBC Ordered Three Star Trek Storylines 60 Years Ago This Month - What Were They?

We know "the cage" was successful, but what else was on offer.

Of the three potential storylines that Gene Roddenberry pitched to NBC, "The Cage" was the one that was successfully mounted as a Star Trek pilot. For years, fans have speculated about what the two unsuccessful storylines could have been. There are some possible clues in Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek Is... pitch document, dated 1st March 1964 . The front page, which describes Star Trek with the keywords " Action. Adventure. Science Fiction " also outlines six potential story ideas.

Four out of six of these storylines are classic episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series in an embryonic form. "The Day Charlie Became God" could describe the second of Star Trek 's two pilots , "Where No Man Has Gone Before", but is also very clearly an early version of "Charlie X". The third story idea, "President Capone", would eventually be realized as Star Trek: TOS season 2, episode 20, "A Piece of the Action" . The fifth potential story idea, "The Women", is an early version of "Mudd's Women", which was one of the three ideas pitched as a potential second pilot in 1965 .

Other story ideas later in the Star Trek Is... document include "The Man Trap" and "The Mirror", which would later be adapted for episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series .

The 2013 reference book These Are the Voyages: TOS Season One by Marc Cushman and Susan Osborn reveals that "The Women" was also one of the three story ideas pitched to NBC in 1964. The final story was "Visit to Paradise", the outline of which was referred to in the Star Trek Is... pitch document as "The Perfect World". Although declined by NBC in 1964 in favor of "The Cage", "Visit to Paradise" would later be adapted as "The Return of the Archons", in which the USS Enterprise discovers a peaceful planet ruled by the evil computer, Landru .

Star Trek has introduced several planets controlled by computers, some with more positive results than others.

November 2024 Marks The 60th Anniversary Of Star Trek’s Unaired Pilot

Shooting on "the cage" began on november 27th, 1964..

NBC selected "The Cage" as their preferred Star Trek pilot at the end of July, 1964 . For the next few months, preparations were made to start shooting "The Cage", with Roddenberry submitting rewrites to NBC right up until the final draft being submitted on November 20, 1964. This was one week before Star Trek 's first scenes were shot on November 27; the conversation between Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) and Dr. Phil Boyce (John Hoyt) about the incident on Rigel VII. Shooting on "The Cage" wrapped on December 28, 1964, with the Orion slave girl scenes the last to be filmed .

The day after shooting wrapped, Roddenberry received the USS Enterprise model for use in the show. NBC declined to take Star Trek further in February 1965, because the network believed it didn't have the mass appeal that they were looking for . However, Gene Roddenberry and Desilu convinced NBC to give Star Trek a second chance, and commissioned "Where No Man Has Gone Before" a month later. Star Trek 's second pilot was more positively received by the network, and NBC ordered it for broadcast in the 1966/1967 TV season, and the rest is history.

How Will Star Trek Commemorate Its Actual 60th Anniversary?

September 8th, 2026 is sooner than you think..

While nobody is expecting Star Trek to throw a big party to celebrate 60 years since the production of its failed pilot, the anniversary of "The Cage" is a reminder that Star Trek 's 60th anniversary is fast approaching. At this stage it's not clear how exactly Paramount will celebrate the massive milestone in 2026, but there have been some interesting recent developments. Paramount recently confirmed that a Star Trek origin movie written by Seth Grahame-Smith and directed by Toby Haynes is part of their 2025/26 slate.

The upcoming Star Trek movie was recently described in a Variety cover story as " an origin story of sorts for the main timeline of the entire franchise ". This suggests a movie that takes place between the 30th anniversary movie, Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Enterprise . However, the story of Star Trek 's real-world creation could make for a fascinating Gene Roddenberry biopic , which would be a leftfield choice that could be greeted warmly by fans. Whatever direction it goes in, it seems like the Star Trek origin story will be the perfect way to kick off the celebrations in Star Trek: The Original Series ' 60th anniversary year.

All episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series are available to stream on Paramount+.
